Top O’ The Morning!

This month we celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day one of the most celebrated holidays of the year when most neighborhood bars and bagel shops add a touch of green to their products for one special day. But let’s not forget we live in one of the greatest cities in the world, so we always go big and never go home. So let’s start with New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade which is not only the largest in the entire nation, it’s one of the city’s oldest parades dating back to March 17, 1762. (Note: That was 14 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.)

Read Any of Our Issues In Digital Format on:

Issuu.com | Apple Newsstand | Our Website

With over two million viewers watching the world over, the parade steps off at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue and proceeds up the avenue past Saint Patrick’s Cathedral— with a wave from His Eminence—all the way to 79th Street. Take notice along the middle of the avenue for one-and-a-half miles the traffic line has changed from standard white to a festive emerald green. It was the late John Joseph Fitzsimons and Kevin Nelson who funded (at a cost of $9,000) the unique New York tradition of annually re-painting that traffic line that guides hundreds of thousands of marchers along the midtown route. Also, has it ever crossed your mind the sheer strength it takes to carry a 35 lb. instrument which involves intense blowing and squeezing air through four different reeds to create a one-of-a-kind magical sound up Fifth Avenue. Hats off to all the bagpipers. You’re an extraordinary group of talent and spirit. Here’s another little-known fact: A private No. 6 subway is reserved for military personnel who have marched in the parade at the 86th Street/Lexington Avenue Station to transport them to the 69th Regiment Armory. To help you plan your day, New York Lifestyles scouted out the “9 Best Irish Pubs” in the city for Guinness, grub, and a jolly good time. So, before you indulge, first sink your teeth into this guide of Irish watering holes around town. You will be sure to see a leprechaun or two. (Did you know they spend their days mending shoes? That’s why they’re territorial about their pots of gold—it’s hard work!) Of course if you’re lucky enough to get away this month—or for the future—look for “6 Reasons To Visit Ireland” in our Travel section. It’s sure to inspire you to explore the “land of a thousand welcomes.” Since we are on the discussion of Ireland here are a couple of fun facts to ponder. Nearly 13 million pints of Guinness are consumed on March 17th enough to fill 60 percent of the Empire State Building. And as you feast on your corned beef and cabbage dinner, realize the term corned comes from the treatment of the meat with large-grained rock salt, called “corns” of salt. For those who wonder why every loaf of Irish Soda Bread always seems to display a cross on top, the answer is quite simple. To let the devil out while baking. They don’t tell you that on the on the Food Network. But, in the end, let’s all remember Saint Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday with history and culture passed down from generation to generation since the 17th century. Even up until 1970 all the pubs were closed by law in Ireland on that day. So like the three-leaf shamrock was a teaching tool to explain the Holy Trinity, let’s learn from our past to better our future.

BRIAN d’ARCY JAMES ACTOR, SINGER & THE NICEST GUY IN SHOW BIZ By Ellis Nassour

ez Butterworth’s The Ferryman is one of the most acclaimed plays of this or any season. In its London West End debut, it won numerous awards, including the coveted Olivier for Best Play and director Sam Mendes. In its Broadway transfer, playing at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre at least into July, the play has over 25 Best Play picks and a New York Times’ Critics Pick. Needless to say, it’s a front runner for a Tony nomination for Best Play and Director. Mendes is an Oscar and Tony winner—Best Picture, American Beauty; 1998 revival, Cabaret. Butterworth was Tonynominated in 2011 for Best Play for Jerusalem, his Broadway playwriting debut. One of theater, film, and TV’s most talented and well-regarded actors, Brian d’Arcy James, is now starring as Quinn, the head of the large Carney farmhouse. The setting is rural County Armagh, Northern Ireland, 1981, where preparations are being made for the annual harvest of 50 acres of wheat and barley and the feasting that will follow. There’s laughter, song, and dance—and the killing of a goose for the feast that lies ahead. The out-sized family—a cast of 21, a rarity for a play—includes Quinn’s wife Mary, played by longtime stage (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Lion in Winter) and TV favorite Emily Bergl; Holley Fain (Roundabout’s 2012 Harvey) as her widowed sister-in-law Caitlin; aunts— including Aunt Maggie Far Away (the revelation of her nickname would ruin the fun), portrayed by celebrated actress Fionnula Flanagan; an uncle; mischievous children aged from newborn to their 20s; and friends from far and near who arrive to help. ©Bobby Quillard

A SHATTERING DISCOVERY

But this year they will be interrupted by an unwanted visitor. A sense of foreboding sets in due to the vengeance-obsessed conflict between Britain and Iron Lady Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and IRA’s political arm, Sein Finn as imprisoned activists die of hunger strikes. The discovery of Quinn’s brutally-murdered brother creates a chain of events that race to a fierce, intensely gripping, and shattering climax. From his first viewing of The Ferryman last Christmas on the West End and seeing the cast again on Broadway, Brian was fascinated by the play which he says is so beautifully written that it’s magical. “At its core are the interpersonal relationships of a family. How they connect, or don’t. How they receive love, or don’t. It’s wrapped in the context of the political era of the troubles in Northern Ireland, which gives the story momentum.” Starring in Something Rotten! ©Joan Marcus

HIS IRISH ROOTS

Brian says the role of Quinn is a magnificent gift. And he’ll definitely get the Irish brogue right. Atlantic Theatre Company’s production of Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore (2006, Tony nominee, Best Play) helped prepare Brian for Ferryman. “My character Brendan was from Northern Ireland so I not only studied the accent but also received an understanding of the politics and the cycle of violence that was occurring.” Brian d’Arcy James, born in 1968 in Saginaw, Michigan, has two sisters and a brother. “Mom is Irish American, so I came from a linage of Kellys, O’Briens, and Fitzgeralds. Dad’s background is Welsh. Ireland is definitely a big thread in my quilt. My identity as Irish American was something I was always conscious of, something my great-grandparents and grandparents were proud of. Naturally, there’s a sense of history just by virtue of their personal stories.” However, he states he’s “allergic to the whole St. Patrick’s Day fever. It’s not a sticker I put on and wear for the day. It’s something that’s always with me, not something I have to tap into on one particular day.” His maternal grandfather Harry Francis Kelly was Governor of Michigan (1943-1947) and a member of the Michigan Supreme Court. “My father was an attorney, so I was always around politics. It was something on my radar by virtue of the fact that it was a realistic job opportunity. It wasn’t something mysterious or unattainable, but I never really seriously considered it.” He was, however, heavily-influenced by his handsome uncle and namesake Brian Kelly, a veteran TV/film actor, producer, and director who had appearances on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson and Hollywood Squares. His career included guest, recurring, and starring roles on numerous TV series including The Rifleman, The Beverly Hillbillies; ABC’s Straightaway; and the one he’s most noted for: widowed father Porter Ricks on NBC’s Flipper (1964-1967). He was also a producer of the cult classic Blade Runner (1982). “Uncle Brian wasn’t just a person I saw on TV,” explains Brian. “He was someone I could talk to and ask about this and that. I was lucky to have his example. It took away the mystery of what the possibilities were. It cemented the idea that it was something I could pursue.” MARCH 2019 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 13

Shrek The Musical ©Joan Marcus

Brian, wife Jennfer Prescott, and their daughter

A GOOD START

And that he did following graduation from Northwestern University’s School of Communication, arriving in New York in 1991. Brian has made a seemingly effortless segue from drama, to musicals, with his rich tenor, to comedy and from stage to TV and film. “I’m fortunate to have had my hand in different genres and styles. The more you learn, the easier it is to approach the style that’s required. Knowledge is power. With the luxury of time, you learn how to employ them. Sad, funny, dramatic, or musical, it helps to have all cylinders firing.” Brian made his Broadway debut taking over the lead role in 1993 of Mickey in Blood Brothers opposite Petula Clark’s Mrs. Johnstone. He followed with Lincoln Center Theatre and London’s Royal National Theatre/Nicholas Hytner’s exceptional revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, where, incidentally, he met his wife Jennifer (Prescott) among a cast that included Audra McDonald. He received his first Tony nomination as Featured Actor for his portrayal of Sidney Falco opposite John Lithgow and Kelli O’Hara in Marvin Hamlisch, Craig Carnelia, and John Guare’s Sweet Smell of Success, a 2002 Best Musical nominee. He was Tony-nominated for Best Actor for Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell’s 2015 Something Rotten, and David LindsayAbaire and Jeanine Tesori’s 2008 Shrek, which co-starred Sutton Foster. Brian originated the role of King George in Hamilton. He received a 2001 Obie for his solo performance as a Dublin gangster in Conor McPherson’s drama The Good Thief for Keen Company. His first foray into TV was a 1997 three-episode arc on ABC’s daytime soap The City. “That was my first time on a set. The input factor was very high. I had a lot of surgical strikes along the way in TV to gleam information on what it was like to work on a set, to work with actors.” TV moves fast, then it stops, laughs Brian. “Then you wait, then it moves fast for another 45 seconds or for however long the scene is. The stage is a different process and rhythm. That takes a long time to adjust to and understand. It was a natural progression for me to get work in theater from the get-go since I’d been doing theater since high school. I’m blessed to be able to work in both. I enjoy altering the rhythm and the shifting of gears that comes with performing in different mediums.”

A LESSON LEARNED

He shares one of the lessons he’s learned. “No matter the medium, writers and directors are interested in telling a story in a truthful way. Styles and approach may be different, but a good artist is hoping to create a depiction of reality that an audience can be moved by. That’s the common denominator.” Memorable TV outings have been his 2013 role of Frank Houston, husband to Debra Messing, on NBC’s backstage musical drama Smash; and Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, based on Jay Asher’s best-selling books. Recent films include last year’s First Man and the 2015 Oscar-winner Spotlight. One of his most memorable experiences was performing for President Obama and First Lady Michelle at 2010’s A Broadway Celebration: In Performance at the White House, which aired on PBS. •

THE FERRYMAN The Ferryman is a sprawling family melodrama filled with seasoned cast members. “I’m so impressed with our cast and predict oneword raves for each of them.” states Brian. “The amazing thing about this experience is that we’re all going into this endeavor together. There’s a great sense of camaraderie and responsibility. We have such reverence for Jez Butterworth’s words that it’s bonded us together as a like-minded force. The trick will be to be different but the same so the integrity of the play will remain the same. It’s going to be a remarkable journey!” For more information on Brian d’Arcy James, visit riandarcyjames.com. MARCH 2019 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 15

MORGAN TAYLOR NAIL LACQUER Go for the Glow/The Color of Petals Spring Collection For a little fun on St. Patrick’s Day without being too out there — paint your nails green. A fun color to go with is Go for the Glow, a neon green shade with a crème finish. For spring colors, though, the 2019 Collection features The Color of Petals inspired by flowers in pretty pastel shades: Merci Bouquet (Lilac Crème), I Feel Flower-ful (Light Nude Crème), Young, Wild & Free-sia (Soft Peach Crème), Follow The Petals (Pink Pearl) and Strike A Posie (Blush Pink Crème). What I like about the Morgan Taylor website is you can see how a shade looks on your skin tone. Info: morgantaylorlacquer.com.

INTOXICATING BEAUTY Sweet Hops Radiance on Tap Sugar Polish/ Craft Body Brew Body Butter This St. Patty’s Day, skip the green beer and quench your skin’s thirst with intoxicating treats. First polish away dry, dead skin cells and get your skin ready to show off this spring with Radiance on Tap Sugar Polish. Formulated with natural beer, hops, crushed walnuts and ultra-fine sugar crystals, this scrub makes way for soft, radiant skin. Follow up with the Craft Body Brew Body Butter, also formulated with beer to help smooth skin and get rid of discolorations. Ingredients like wheat seed extract help improve skin texture and help it retain moisture. Info: intoxicating-beauty.com.

SALLY HANSEN Mega Strength Don’t moan, but spring is the perfect time to clear out your beauty stash of products that have passed their prime, like old nail polish. Nail polish is typically good for two years, advises Skyy Hadley of As U Wish Nail Spa. “If your polish isn’t going on smoothly, or seems thinner or thicker than usual, it’s probably time to toss it.” If it seems dry, crumbly and the bottle is difficult to open, it might be time to let it go. For new shades, try a pastel. Hadley says pale yellow, pink and blue will be big for spring, as well “anything iridescent.” Her pick? Mega Strength in Liquid Power, a pale, shimmery pink that features both pastel and iridescent trends. I like Persis-tint, a metallic, iridescent purple, and if you want to go bolder and brighter try Money Pink Power. Info: sallyhansen.com.

MANIC PANIC N.Y.C. Ice Metal Lethal Lipstick in Green Envy Hit the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in daring style. Ice Metal Lethal Lipstick in Green Envy is described as a “shimmery shade of grass green.” Its frosty, metallic formula is also cruelty-free and vegan and comes in a cute black case with diamond-like stones. Info: manicpanic.com.

CRYSTAL Mineral Enriched Deodorant This deodorant is inspired by green— money, that is. Freshly Minted is a unisex scent with hints of cotton, linen and fresh mint. The best part—it’s formulated without harsh chemicals, moisturizes and conditions the skin and provides 24hour protection. Info: thecrystal.com. •

With its moving eyes and tail it made eating breakfast, well… happy. Of course I had no idea of its heritage that dated back to1932 when these animated felines only came in black or red. Happy 21st century: the iconic Kit-Cat Klocks® are now offered in a rainbow of colors, lady versions and more, including “Exotic Pets” (clocks dipped in premium hydrographic animal patterns). You’ll covet every member of the menagerie, so choose wisely! Info: kit-cat.com

UPON REFLECTION What would life be without a bit of neoclassical indulgence? So why not give into your most decadent decorative desires… whether it’s a Gustavian desk coupled with an elegant matching chair, or console/buffet that defies genres. To start you might want to build upon a single, albeit breathtaking, mirror—one in which hand-carved gold trim meets the perfect sleek grey background. Preen…pose… vogue… or merely bask in the awesome aura of you in front of Ave Home’s 64-inch tall Regent Trumeau Mirror. The ultimate Louis XVI-style heirloom-to-be. FACE ODYSSEY

IT’S MY BAG

For the moment, let’s take cosmetic surgery and facial fillers off the table… especially if the time and/or cost involved aren’t, well, realistic. For those of us searching for an invasive-free solution, author/entrepreneur Ashley Black has come up with the FaceBlaster™, an ingenious little device to jettison puffiness, lines (fine and not-sofine), discoloration and other annoyances while defining the jaw and cheekbones, facial massage included. As for myself, I was happy there was a reference tutorial online and minimal time commitment. Am I fabulous? Getting there. Info: faceblaster.com

Whether it’s crumbs or sand, a leaky bottle or a saturated swimsuit—our lives are filled with grainy, wet, errant ickiness. No way around it. Shopping sack: doomed; beach carryall: a hot mess. So it’s nice to know that CGear is out there making bags and backpacks that de-ickify our lives and look really, really cool. Their line of Totes (billed Tote I through V) features several sizes and styles, all “sand free” thanks to their mesh bottom and feature at least one pocket. My choice, the formidable Tote III in a beautiful muted green, is enormous and mega-functional. Info: cgear-sandfree.com.

HEEL APPEAL Marilyn Monroe said, “Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world!” You could say it’s also the mantra of Dutch style diva Bianca Blom, whose frustration brought on by the pain of wearing high heels, even gold standard Italian-crafted ones, led her to partner with an orthopedic shoemaker to develop the ultimate designer 3and 4-inch heels—so staggeringly comfortable she wore them during a half-marathon in Manhattan. The catwalk gorgeous LINJA Collection, handmade in Italy, assures precision fit through an iPhone app that measures foot size via 3D imaging. Impressive. Info: linjashoes.com.

SELFIE CENTRAL It was love at first impression: makeup (with mirror) that attaches to your cell phone and even has a slot for cards, cash, whatever. When a photo op hits, you’re there… lipstick re-upped and smile ready, Adorably skinny and smart phoneready, the PalmPact/FaceCase is available in either Rose Gold or Black and comes in two color palettes: Natural Nudes and Rich Nudes. TV celebs like Kelly Ripa, Tinsley Mortimer and supermodel Paulina Porikova are already fans, as is PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk (FaceCase is 100 percent cruelty-free; 10 percent of proceeds go to PETA). MAKE MINE A DOUBLE Legal marijuana may be a hot topic on the nightly news, but the buzz surrounding CBD! Cannabidiol (CBD)—a de-potified version of cannabis—is attracting advocates for its properties as an antioxidant and antiinflammatory. Dabbling in The Gold Q’s lotions, balms, creams, etc. marks my first adventure with a product line featuring Refined Hemp as their first ingredient. I was amazed at the potency and efficacy: these products are truly special. Of them, the 2-in1 Day and Night Eye Repair stood out for its smooth application on the delicate skin around the eyes… but then I like to keep things mellow. BRING FASHION TO THE FIELD STYLIST ERICA HANKS BRINGS THE HOTTEST LOOKS TO THE COOLEST ATHLETES By Bailey Beckett

hey’re celebrities on and off the court. Today’s most famous athletes know the world’s attention is on them 24/7, and so looking the part requires more than a uniform. Thankfully, there’s help. Erica Hanks is one of fashion’s most prominent stylists whose specialty has become dressing some of the most prominent players from the NFL, NBA and even NASCAR(yes, race car drivers!). New York Lifestyles caught up with the Charlotte, NCbased stylist to get her take on bringing the field to the front row. How are athletes unique to your clientele? Charlotte is a sports hub. We don’t have a lot of celebrities that come through like you see in New York, so athletes are our celebrities. But the fundamentals are really the same—you work with a client’s size, style, budget, comfort level. With athletes, size is a major differential. They have different body types. They are not traditionally sample sizes. I work with excellent tailors across the country, whether in Charlotte, New York or even Las Vegas. A good tailor can fix anything. We are seeing more and more athletes at award shows and red carpets. What do you attribute that trend to? Athletes have always been a part of fashion. In the 1920s, we had Babe Ruth who was known for his suits. Everything he wore was impeccably tailored. More recently, you see people like LeBron James wearing bold choices like a Thom Browne suit … with shorts. These guys have huge followings—sports fans follow them religiously. And so, their influence on fashion is unmistakable. Plus, they’re in great shape physically, which is what brands love. Do you find athletes and men in general reluctant to embrace style? No, that’s a myth. They may not be the original point of contact— often it’s the wife, manager or agent—but once they realize what I’m doing they get more comfortable. I’m essentially branding you. I’m making specific choices of what you’re going to wear in public, and that is the lens through which sponsors, brands, media and fans see you. You work with NASCAR racers, who are suddenly embracing style. When did this develop? It’s not like working with the NFL or NBA, but my drivers make $20-$30 million a year. And when you have a guy making that kind of money, and you are being called on for public appearances, you naturally want to invest in a good wardrobe. NASCAR has a huge audience that is really diversified. Is there one designer or style athletes prefer? It depends on the person. A lot of my clients really love Gucci, which can be as loud or quiet as you want it. Gucci is also known for having great craftsmanship so the suits will last a couple years. I also like Prada, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren and Rag & Bone. Currently, I pull a lot of cool sneaker and track suits for my NFL clients. I do subtler looks for my race car drivers.

Erica Hanks

What are the trends we’ll be seeing for men this Spring? Fashion follows what’s happening in the political arena. It’s about giving everybody a voice. For men, we are going to see more bold colors, lightweight layering, new attention to fitted sports jackets. Men traditionally gravitate to navy, gray and black but pops of color lend personality. What’s the first thing you ask or tell a new client? That I need to get into their closet! The people I work with are constantly on-the-go, traveling for games, races, events. They don’t have a lot of time to sit for appointments. So, if I could get into their homes and see what they already were wearing I get a better sense of their style footprint. What is your typical day? I don’t think there is a typical day. I have 25 personal clients which means a lot of meetings with my team to get down what’s going on that week and how we can get it done. And, of course, meeting the clients, pulling wardrobe, putting it together. There is also shopping or going to designer showrooms. Every day is different and exhilarating. HURTS SO GOOD

BUILDING A BEAUTY EMPIRE WITH THE HELP OF BEES By Bailey Beckett

t’s human nature to want to run and hide the minute you hear the buzz of a bee. Its sting is a painful consequence of nature. But who knew it was also good for you? Deborah Mitchell, for one. The UK-based skin care genius looked to the insect to solve the modern-day beauty dilemma: how to reverse aging without injectables like Botox. And so, she studied the effects of a bee’s venom on skin and created Abeetoxin, which is now the blockbuster serum found in products around the world. It’s also the foundation of her growing beauty empire Heaven, which makes the most effective, long lasting serums and creams used by celebrities, royals (Camilla? Kate? Meghan? Maybe!) and beauty aficionados. Now available in the U.S. online, Mitchell is conquering this billion-dollar market with ingenuity, honesty and her English sensibilities. How do you describe your Heaven line of products? We are a results-driven organic based skin care range. I started inventing products when I was 24 after working at a salon and saw there were so few products that would help my clients. I had already taken a beauty course and knew how to create formulas. But it was really when I designed the Age Defiance serum with hyaluronic acid that Heaven caught on. Celebrities like Victoria Beckham found it useful, as did Duran Duran band member Andy Taylor and his wife, Tracy, who both loved it for its anti-aging and spot repair revelation. What does Heaven do better than any other product? It sounds big headed for being a British brand—we are not known for over exaggeration—but it’s true: Heaven makes skin look younger, smoother and more perfect in one treatment or application. It’s rare any product range could say the same. You are world famous for creating the Bee Venom serum, which celebrities love and use. How did you create it? If you’ve ever tried a bee venom mask, you will know it’s one cream that transforms your skin, similar to Botox. The skin believes it’s been stung, so the muscles and lines relax. And because the bee venom has a lasting effect on the skin’s surface, it triggers anti-aging collagens and elastin, which are the pillars that hold the answer to a youthful glow. When you go to the gym, you make your body stronger. If you do it enough, you’ll see improvements. It’s the same for the skin, which is why the bee venom is so effective. It’s a miracle cream—you don’t need to buy moisturizer or skin cream. The venom is a re-boost. It’s all the power you need. What are the most common issues people confront with skin care? There are six common skin issues: Oily skin and blackheads; acne, lines, and slacking skin; dry skin; red veins; Eczema; and psoriasis. My Bee Venom Mask works on all of these conditions. That’s why so many people love it. What is one ingredient that everyone must use? My two favorites are Abeetoxin, and hyaluronic acid. What are the popular new trends in skin care? Because skin care companies tend to watch each other closely, most are not so original these days. However, one of my new inventions is prism technology, which helps create peptides to release collagen in the skin. It’s a great addition to my Age Defiance cream. It takes negatives like light from computers and the sun and turns it into anti-aging properties. TAHITI

A PLACE OF BREATHTAKING WONDER By Jenny Peters

he first thing to know about Tahiti— or French Polynesia, as the whole country is actually called—is that the photographs you’ve seen do not do it justice. This wondrous place in the South Pacific consists of more than 100 islands in five archipelagos, most ringed by coral reefs that create strikingly gorgeous lagoons filled with azure- and turquoise-hued warm water. Tahiti is the main island of the Society Islands grouping, and also where the international airport is in Papeete, as well as the generic name for the country. From there, most visitors explore the nearby islands of Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Taha’a and Bora Bora; each island is unique, accessible via ferry or short plane ride. Expect to hear French spoken everywhere, as well as English and Tahitian: learn “Ia Orana” (“hello”) and “Maururu” (“thank you”) before you go to sound a little like a local.

BEGUILING BORA BORA Bora Bora is the jewel in the crown of all of French Polynesia, a place that grabs your heart the moment you spot it out the window of the plane. With its craggy Mount Otemanu rising from the center of an indescribably blue lagoon, it truly is a magical vision of paradise found. And while Bora Bora has been synonymous with honeymooners ever since the first overwater bungalows appeared here in the late 1960s, there are lots of other possibilities for vacationers who are not at that blissful stage of life. These days, families spanning three generations or groups of adventurous friends are welcomed at many of the resorts that now dot the lagoon.

St. Regis Bora Bora - Overwater Villas Le Meridian Bora Bora

At the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, for example, lovers, families and friends find the largest overwater villas in the South Pacific, some with two bedrooms and private swimming pools. That legendary place also has a Royal Villa, 13,000 square feet of incredibly private space with three bedrooms, four baths, a swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna and your own private beach. And every villa here on this private motu (island) comes with a personal butler. Add in a world-class spa and cuisine by Jean-Georges Vongerichten and it isn’t surprising that this is a Hollywood A-list favorite. More importantly, the St. Regis has water access everywhere (like most Bora Bora resorts), so every day can be as much of an adventure as you desire. Sailboats, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, snorkel masks and jet skis let you discover the crystal-clear lagoon at your own pace, all the while looking up at that iconic mountainous rock formation that towers above.

No matter which beautiful hotel you choose (others with overwater bungalows and gorgeous settings include Le Meridian Bora Bora, the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort, the Conrad Bora Bora Nui and the Four Seasons Bora Bora), tear yourself away from the resort now and then for some fascinating experiences. We love scuba diving both inside the lagoon and out in the open water, where encountering massive manta rays, beautiful sea turtles, stingrays, huge schools of spotted eagle rays and Tahiti’s famous sharks are an everyday occurrence. Non-divers can have a gentle shark and stingray experience, too; there’s seriously nothing to fear here in paradise. Or join a jeep tour or a guided hiking trip up Mount Otemanu and see Bora Bora from a completely different point of view. Take in a pearl farm to discover how those stunning Tahitian black pearls are made, then shop in Vaitape (the island’s main city) for a piece of jewelry to always be reminded of this dreamy place. 26 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

St. Regis Bora Bora - Villas at Night

TAHITI’S LESSER-KNOWN ISLANDS Bora Bora is incredible, but there’s much more to see in the Society Islands, with other lesser-known (and less crowded) places to explore not far from Tahiti island and the airport. If money isn’t a worry, put Marlon Brando’s private island on the itinerary. The Brando is an all-inclusive, 35-villa resort and the only hotel you’ll find on Tetiaroa. That eco-friendly, ultraexclusive luxury enclave opened in 2014 and is the ultimate escape to another world. Moorea boasts eight mountain peaks and a turquoise lagoon, with family friendly hotels as well as honeymoon overwater bungalows. It’s more easygoing and casual than Bora Bora, but also a spot where serious adrenaline seekers can have a ball, doing challenging hikes, tackling a sky-high zip-line system or parachuting out of a small plane. Taha’a is a perfect destination for botany lovers, as this lush, flower-shaped island is home to vanilla farms, growing both vanilla orchids and vanilla beans. The whole island is redolent with that sweet scent, while the motus surrounding the lagoon are blessed with white sand beaches and coral gardens just off shore. A stay at the secluded five-star Le Taha’a Island Resort and Spa is a sublime way to embrace this luscious, less-visited Tahitian island. You’ll never want to leave. For more information on Tahiti and her islands, visit tahititourisme.com. •

The Brando

GETTING THERE You’ll need to fly to Los Angeles or San Francisco to catch a nonstop flight to Tahiti on either Air Tahiti Nui (LAX) or United (SFO). Air Tahiti Nui flies daily to Papeete (PPT) and is upgrading their full fleet to Dreamliner planes in 2019. United flies three Dreamliner flights a week from San Francisco. The flight is about 7.5 hours and you do not cross the international date line. Four Seasons Bora Bora

MSC SEASIDE

THE SHIP THAT FOLLOWS THE SUN By Nava & Michael Raviv

he MSC Seaside is a one-year-old, state-of-the-art ship sailing year-round on 7-day cruises from Miami to the Eastern and Western Caribbean. Dubbed“The Ship that Follows the Sun,”the MSC Seaside was designed for warm weather, evoking the easy-going South Beach lifestyle. It features expansive outdoor spaces including several pools (one with a retractable roof), large decks lined with beach chairs, stages for parties, sidewalk cafes and long waterfront boardwalks for al fresco dining and promenades. The ship’s glass floor Infinity Bridges and the Bridge of Sighs afford breathtaking views of sea and sky—the perfect spot for Instagram snapshots. Seaside’s dazzling interior design is worthy of photo spreads in glossy architectural journals. There are almost no straight lines in sight, as walls, columns, and countertops sweep, undulate and sparkle under the bright lights. Every piece of furniture looks as if it was handpicked from a trendy Italian showroom. Deep burgundy and grey hues spell elegance, while bright illumination and electronic music add a unique vibe to the swanky décor. The hub of the ship is a soaring atrium flanked by two solid glass grand stairways embedded with thousands of sparkling crystals. The atrium’s back wall is lined with floor to ceiling LED screens, mirrors, lights and stages for performers. Lively bars and lounges surround the different levels of the atrium. 28 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

LIFE ON BOARD One of the most popular pastimes on board is basking in the sun while sipping cocktails and gazing at the blue Caribbean Sea. However, there are plenty of other activities to experience including zip-lines (the longest at sea), water slides, fitness classes, a Technogym wellness center, bowling lanes, a car racing simulator, trivia games, dance classes, and jungle-themed playground, to name just a few. Guests can also try their luck in the ship’s casino or shop the duty-free stores. Those who cherish the sybaritic life can indulge in a massage, a Decleor Paris facial, or other pampering treatment at the Aurea Spa, the largest Balinese spa at sea. They can also unwind in the Thermal Area, enjoying a large bubbling whirlpool, hot and cold rain-showers, dry sauna, snow room, light and dark aromatherapy steam, and a Himalayan salt room. The spa also offers Botox and other medical rejuvenation treatments.

DINING & NIGHTLIFE The MSC Seaside features several dining venues including two elegant à la carte restaurants and two buffet locations with numerous stations and selections. Guests can also enjoy specialty restaurants (for a fee) such as Roy Yamaguchi’s Asian Market, authentic steak house, Butcher’s Cut, and the ship’s signature seafood restaurant, Ocean Cay. The Metropolitan Theater is the ship’s main entertainment venue, featuring top Broadway and Hollywood musicals and Cirque du Soleil-style shows with daring aerialists, dazzling gymnasts, and amazing contortionists. One of the best shows is Skywalker, a tribute to Michael Jackson, done so well that one could swear Michael himself was onstage. Another unique experience is an abbreviated version of Madama Butterfly featuring a lavish production with sets, costumes, and outstanding opera-trained singers. The cruise staff also organizes theme evenings such as the White Night party under the stars, and a 70’s party with the iconic Village People. Those who like to dance to their own beat head to the Silent Disco where they don wireless earphones and sway like no one is watching.

THE YACHT CLUB Passengers who seek the most luxurious cruise experience book rooms in the Yacht Club, a private, three-floor, all-inclusive enclave near the ship’s bow. The Club features a large deck with pool, hot tubs, cushy rattan, and a poolside bar and grill. The lower level of the Club is home to a vast glasswalled lounge where guests relax with canapés, pastries, and chocolates while sipping champagne and listening to live classical music. An elegant restaurant is perched on a balcony overlooking the lounge and sea beyond. It offers gourmet dining with dishes such as foie gras, escargot, truffled pasta, delicious seafood, and superb steaks, all paired with fine wines and accompanied by exquisite desserts. Guests of the Yacht Club also enjoy complimentary drinks, butler and concierge service, priority boarding and disembarkation, elevator bypass, reserved theater seats, and other privileges.

THE ITINERARY The MSC Seaside plies the Caribbean islands of Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Maarten and the Bahamas on one itinerary and visits Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Mexico and Bahamas on another. The ship offers a plethora of shore excursions and there is plenty to do on each island, but as the saying goes, “It’s not the destination, but the journey that counts.” This is particularly true when one sails on the MSC Seaside. The ship is only a year old but is already a top player in the ever-evolving cruising world. THE OCEAN CLUB FOUR SEASONS RESORT PARADISE FOUND IN THE BAHAMAS By Ruth J. Katz

haken, not stirred,” is the legendary James Bond admonition to countless cinematic barkeeps across decades. As I sat at the Martini Bar in the lobby of the elegant Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas, I, too, uttered those words to Keith Cash, the almost-as-renowned barman, who has been shaking, stirring, mixing, and mastering serious nectars for over 32 years at the resort. After a scene from Casino Royale was shot on these very grounds, Cash created the Vesper Martini, named for Bond’s (in that film, Daniel Craig) inamorata. Cash has a cache of other martinis up his sleeve. Just ask, and a heavenly concoction will appear. Craig was not the only Bond to find the Bahamas welcoming. In fact, three other 007 films were committed to celluloid here: Sean Connery plied his acting chops in both Thunderball and Never Say Never Again; and Roger Moore, in The Spy Who Loved Me. Connery loved the Bahamas so much, he bought property here. 30 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

ISLAND LIFE And there is a lot of “here” to love. The Commonwealth of the Bahamas comprises some 700 islands, islets, and cays (about three dozen are inhabited), occupying 1,000 square miles in the Atlantic, with New Providence Island (Nassau is its capital), among the most popular; Paradise Island (a mere one-mile wide, about five miles long) is its neighbor. Other well-known Bahamian islands include the Exumas, the Abacos, Freeport, Bimini, and Eleuthra. Columbus’ first landfall in 1492 was the Bahamas. Connery’s love of the area is matched by that of the Four Seasons staff at The Ocean Club; so devoted to the resort are the employees, that Cash’s tenure is typical. Countless employees have logged in decades at the hotel, including tennis pro, Leo Rolle, who has coached some mighty serious A-listers on his six tennis courts, and who has “held court” over 50 years at the property. Concierge Bridgette Poitier has been here about a dozen years, and she’s one of the “youngsters.” (Poitier is a well-known name in the Bahamas, as actor Sidney Poitier hails from Cat Island; the bridge linking Paradise Island to New Providence is named for him.) The resort, set on 35 exquisitely lush, landscaped acres, is one of the most stunning among the many where I have luxuriated. There are just over 100 rooms in the heart of the hotel, decorated with modern, tropical-influenced elegance, surrounding the Huntington Court, named for A & P supermarket heir, Huntington Hartford II. In addition to the chambers in the main hotel, there are suites nestled among the verdant flora, including two three-bedroom and one four-bedroom villas, ideal for families. Hartford bought the island (yes, the entire island) in 1959 from a Swedish industrialist. He later purchased the remains of a French Augustinian monastery, initially acquired by William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s, and thence warehoused. This stately cloister, the Versailles Gardens, is the jewel of the property; the beautiful landscape is accented with koi and lily ponds, fountains, and comely marble statuary.

MORE TO SEE & DO While Cash ministers to what you imbibe, Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten has overseen the ambrosia. He has created the menu for Dune, the Ocean Club’s sensational sea-view eatery, and every meal I had was toothsome and tasty. You can easily spend your entire time at the resort—given the restaurants, the golf course, spa, and a charming Kids 4 All Seasons clubhouse at your fingertips. However, find time to venture into town at least once (cruise ships make Nassau a regular stop), if only to check out the shopping and sites: The Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation at Vendue House offers a seminal education. The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, located in a refurbished, two-story 1860s villa, highlights the work of native sons—sculptors, painters, photographers--among other exhibits. Another destination should be John Watling’s Distillery, named for a notorious pirate. While the tour is very short and provides for a mere taste of the company’s rums, the Four Seasons is now designing a rum tour for guests only. Another de rigueur visit should be to the funky, unusual Graycliff Hotel, which maintains a chocolatier and a cigar factory. The 100-acre Fort Charlotte on New Providence overlooks the harbor and provides a good photo-op. In the Fort Fincastle Historic Complex, climb the 102-foot-tall, 65-step ascendance (a 66th step is buried on the bottom), carved by slaves from solid limestone in the late 18th century, and named for Queen Victoria. The Ocean Club will also arrange countless singular experiences, including a visit with local artist Jane Waterous, whose striking canvases adorn the hotel’s main salons. Private pop-up evenings at her studio will be a Four Seasons exclusive. The Bahamas has a rich pirate history, and infamous swashbucklers include Henry Avery, Benjamin Hornigold, and Edward Teach. Ask the concierge about pirate highlights. Paradise Island is well-named, indeed, but this resort ratchets up the notion to the lofty, celestial heavens. 6 REASONS TO VISIT IRELAND By Patricia Canole

reland’s small size tempts visitors to try to see the entire country in a single trip. The distances look short on a map, and the miles seem quite modest, but don’t be deceived. Trying to get from Killarney to Galway between lunch and dinner means not only rushing through Counties Limerick and Clare but also missing the essence of Ireland. Here, my sampling of the experiences that make a visit to Ireland pure magic. STATELY HOMES Ashford Castle, County Mayo This gorgeous hotel embodies the fantasy of an Irish castle featuring historic stone facade, complete with towers and turrets; gorgeous, manicured grounds; a stunning setting on a vast lake; and common spaces that are truly grand, with rich wood paneling, chandeliers, and antique furniture. Ashford Castle, once the home of the Guinness clan, became a local hotel in 1939 and has since been refurbished to make each guest feel like royalty. There’s plenty to do outdoors: fishing, boating, falconry lessons, golf, clay shooting, and archery. Info: ashfordcastle.com.

THE BEST FOOD FESTIVALS Galway International Oyster Festival, County Galway A must-do festival is The Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival. The annual four-day event held on the last weekend of September in the center of Galway City. During this popular food festival, you can expect to experience a wide variety of tantalizing events to enjoy from seafood trails. Oyster shucking championships top the list along with food tastings in some of Galway’s finest restaurants. Don’t forget the music, cooking demonstration and the Hot Oyster Awards cooking challenge! Info: galwayoysterfestival.com. 43rd Kinsale Gourmet Festival, County Cork This 18th-century town just a few miles south of Cork City is like one huge restaurant. It’s the best place for a food lover to be almost any time, but especially during the Kinsale Gourmet Festival when the pub crawling is fast and furious every October. Sitting on a dock with a Guinness in one hand and a fistful of oysters in the other is one way to go, but all manner of seafood also appear on the menus of fine restaurants. Finn’s Table on Main Street offers Pan-Fried West Cork Scallops as well as Steamed Oysterhaven Mussels. Info: kinsale.ie/2019-headline-events. 32 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

GREAT WALKS The Burren/Cliffs of Moher, County Clare Almost any walker will tell you that it is the footpaths of a country—not its roadways—that show off the landscape to best advantage. One shining example is The Burren. Here, mile upon mile of all-but-bare rock is almost otherworldly. But there is magnificence here nonetheless. Distances are short, views across Galway Bay to Connemara and the Aran Islands are genuinely inspiring and in May cracks that seam the limestone sprout a stunning collection of a rare flowering plant. Sheltered from the Atlantic winds, blossoms transform the landscape. The mighty Cliffs of Moher, a few miles to the south, offer a cliff-top walk, and the most extensive cave system in Ireland lies beneath. Both The Burren and Cliffs of Moher are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Info: burrennationalpark.ie; cliffsofmoher.ie.

HAVE A PINT The Guinness Storehouse, Dublin No visit to Ireland is complete without raising a pint (or two) to its people’s favorite brew. Head to The Guinness Storehouse and its St. James Gate Brewery in Dublin. The facility gives a behind-thescenes look: Witness the brewing process, get hands-on experience pulling pints and, of course, sample the final product. Enjoy the brew with some traditional Irish meals in one of four on-site eateries. Info: guinness-storehouse.com.

DISCOVER HISTORY Brú na Bóinne, County Meath In a country as ancient and storied as Ireland, historic sites seem to be around every corner. THE BREAKERS

THIS SEASIDE HAVEN IS A SLICE OF HEAVEN By Bailey Beckett

here are few resorts in America, or the world for that matter, that come close to matching The Breakers, an otherworldly oasis in the heart of that billionaire’s playground we call Palm Beach. A city within itself, the AAA Diamond property is not just a hotel but a mental, visual, and spiritual journey of epic proportions. In other words, with all due respect to its Palm Beach setting, you don’t have to leave The Breakers’ grounds. Its more than 500 guest rooms, nine restaurants, two 18-hole championship golf courses, 6,000 square-foot oceanfront fitness center, 20,000-square-foot spa, Mediterranean-style beach club overlooking one-half mile of private beach, four swimming pools, five whirlpool spas, luxury poolside bungalows, 10 lighted tennis courts and 11 on-site boutiques will simply break your heart—only because you’ll eventually have to leave. Originally opened in 1896 as The Palm Beach Inn, the hotel was destroyed by fire just seven years later and rebuilt within a year and rechristened as The Breakers. Since then, it has been hosting the world’s rich and famous, royalty, heads of state, celebrities and families just looking for a getaway. It’s majestic setting, and palm-tree dotted 1,040-foot drive leading to its twin Belvedere towers and giant fountain inspired by the Boboli Gardens in Florence, lets you know you’re far away from home. 34 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

The Breakers

THE LAP OF LUXURY The picturesque setting is its main lure, but it’s just part of the overall mystique and attraction. Its long stretch of pools, bungalows, bars, and restaurants that run along the beach is what sets The Breakers apart. The laid-back vibe is complemented by flawless service, delicious food and frosty drinks, a lively mix of guests and private members, and tropical weather that makes South Florida such a prime destination. Of particular note is its Mediterranean-style Beach Club, a throwback panoramic island escape featuring 25 private, luxury poolside bungalows for daytime rental, complete with a personal concierge. Those not wanting to spend their days lounging and lunching can busy themselves with numerous activities, including scuba, snorkeling, coral reef tours, deep sea fishing, private charters, kayak excursions, stand up paddleboard and boogie board rentals, swimming lessons, and more. Located steps away from the beach scene is The Spa, an Italian-inspired oasis that comes with 17 treatment rooms with face and body care products from OSEA, Tammy Fender, Guerlain and more.

South Pool

Of course, a top tier hotel is nothing without its rooms, and fear not travel aficionados—The Breakers matches any retreat on the island. All rooms face either the beach or the resort and come with the amenities you expect in a luxury setting (pristine décor, luxury linens and duvets, plush bathrobes, private label toiletries, and well stocked mini bar). Raising the stakes even further is The Flagler Club, an ultra-luxury, 25room boutique hotel located within The Breakers. Bringing exclusivity to new extremes, the VIP experience includes fawning butler-style services, a Club Lounge, and a rooftop terrace, among other treats. The Circle

WORLD-CLASS DINING And speaking, err, writing about “treats,” The Breakers offers Michelin-quality dining throughout the hotel and neighborhood. Among its restaurants are HMF, a modern ode to the classic Palm Beach cocktail culture with an innovative take on sharing plates representing multiple cuisines. For a touch of Asia, Echo offers distinctive flavors of China, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, and Korea, complemented by an outstanding selection of cocktails, sake, beer and wine, as well as the island’s best sushi bar. Beef lovers will enjoy Flagler Steakhouse and its fresh take on the classic American chophouse that also features a premier selection of fish, Italian favorites, traditional broiler items, and savory sides. Enjoy brunch at The Circle, which boasts a soaring, 30-foot hand-painted ceiling with eight oval Renaissance murals. Or, perhaps step into the legendary Seafood Bar which basks guests in modern, seaside sophistication and the sense of dining aboard a private luxury yacht (it’s also famous for its aquarium bar). And for families, there’s The Italian Restaurant, where guests can drop off their kids in an adjacent Family Entertainment Center while dining on brick-oven pizzas and fresh pasta, veal Milanese and snapper Mediterranean. For casual fare, there’s the Beach Club, where a seaside-hued décor complements seasonal soups, salads, sandwiches, and flatbreads. The Ocean House, offering laidback luxury, ocean breezes and favorites like salads, baguette sandwiches, seafood and cocktails; and The Surf Break, a gazebo-style tropical beachfront bar where guests relax over cocktails and light bites amidst tranquil breezes. Finally, what’s a vacation without some leisure time? Golf enthusiasts can enjoy two 18-hole championship courses, including Florida’s oldest The Breakers Ocean Course, an 18hole course located on-site at the resort, and The Breakers Rees Jones® Course, a lushly landscaped and challenging course a mere 10 miles away. MARRIOTT STANTON SOUTH BEACH By Gerrie Summers

here is something about the Marriott Stanton South Beach that gives it a hip, residential feel. It blends in with the beach vibe of the affluent SoFi (South of 5th) district of South Beach. You don’t realize it’s an oceanfront boutique hotel. But look up, and you see the twostory lobby, with its Art Deco-inspired design. South Beach is one of the popular neighborhoods of Miami Beach. Nicknamed SoBe, it is now known for its beautiful, white sand beaches, the colorful Art Deco architecture that dots the area, boutiques, galleries, culinary hotspots and nightclubs and of course, the beautiful Ocean Drive skyline.

SOBE STYLE The Marriott Stanton South Beach property was originally an Art Deco hotel built in 1939. Today, the hotel features 224 rooms and eight suites and recently completed a two-phase renovation that began in 2015. Each guest room affords a 1960s SoBe style; and (all but four) have private balconies. Accommodations reflect the soothing environment with subtle shades of beige and tan with pops of orange hues. More recently a facelift of the hotel’s lobby, entryway, meeting spaces, outdoor terrace, and pools has been completed. Two new restaurants, Lolo’s Surf Cantina and Azabu Miami Beach have opened as well as a new fitness center and spa. The spa, (sans saunas, steam room, indoor whirlpool or lounge spaces) has what matters most—great therapists and treatments. On the menu are facials, body scrubs, body wraps, massages, couple massages, men’s services, waxing and mani/pedi services. Next to the spa is a state-of-the-art fitness center, that offers targeted services, strength training, and group fitness classes on the beach or the Ocean Terrace overlooking the pool. Classes are complimentary to hotel guests as part of the $30 per day resort fee (that also includes enhanced high-speed internet, two beach chairs per day, bike rental and beach toys.) 36 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

SUN, SEA, & SEASHELL MASSAGE! I arrived on a late Sunday afternoon. Later, dinner was at the aforementioned Lolo’s Surf Cantina. Lolo’s is a Mexican eatery, inspired by Chef Richard Ampudia’s spirited late grandmother. It seems to be a favorite of locals and visitors, with grab-and-go options for beachgoers and yummy margaritas. The next day, I enjoyed a breakfast at Puerto Sagua where you can enjoy authentic Cuban cuisine. Try a Café Cito (Cuban coffee) and Croquetas. Or you can have a typical American breakfast if you’d prefer (but why?). Then, it was off to see the sights. With a choice of a South Beach Bike Tour to visit the historic districts in the area or an Art Deco Walking Tour, I opted for the Art Deco tour. The tour started at the Art Deco Museum on Ocean Drive. The museum is operated by the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL). You can learn about the three major historic design styles—Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco and Miami Modern (MiMo) before taking the two-hour tour of the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. If you are an architecture buff, this is a great tour to take. After the tour, our group walked to News Cafe. This iconic sidewalk cafe and restaurant is a bit infamous now because it was part of Gianni Versace’s morning routine and the last place he visited. But it is still a popular local hotspot and great for people watching. After the tour in the baking sun, and lunch, it was time for my Hot Sea Shell Massage at the spa. It is highly recommended. Dinner was off property at Upland, Chef Justin Smillie’s restaurant (the first was opened in New York City) with its open kitchen and California-inspired cuisine. I loved the Tempura Shrimp, Miso Tempura Zucchini and Crispy Spiny Lobster Tail. There’s also an incredible selection of wines.

Stanton South Beach Pool

MORE TO DO… The following morning, I walked over to 3rd Street Beach for 7 am yoga. This is where locals go for free yoga with professional yoga instructors (a schedule can be found at the Art Deco Museum). I was then coaxed into going on the South Beach Kayak Adventure. Our tour guide balanced with ease on a paddle board as we kayaked on the ocean and learned more about the area. Upon return, I was ready for my complimentary margarita at Lolo’s and a visit to the beach. There’s direct access to South Beach steps down from the pools. Also, there are two heated pools, a whirlpool, and a sundeck overlooking the ocean. In the evening, dinner was at the Japanese robatayaki-style restaurant Azabu Miami Beach (sister restaurant of Azabu in New York). The main dining room features a visible kitchen where you can see food grilled over charcoal. Bar Azabu serves sake and 40 imported Japanese whiskeys. There is also a hidden 16-seat counter, with Tokyo-trained chefs, called The Den. It was a perfect way to end my stay, along with a private yoga class on the Ocean Terrace before heading back to New York. Marriott Stanton South Beach is a wonderful way to getaway and relax. Because the resort is conveniently located on Ocean Drive, it’s just steps to the bustling restaurants, bars, and shopping—yet private enough that you will avoid the noise and distractions. CHEERS!

RESIDENTIAL BARS & LUXE LIVING By Patricia Canole

s residential living in New York City becomes grander by the day, luxury apartments have become the norm and most of the residential projects being developed in the city are spread over vast acres of land. Built in premium locations, the residential complexes boast open spaces and surrounding greenery. Today’s luxury living rooms and dining areas feature Italian marble flooring with Pergo wood flooring for bedrooms. Walls and flooring in bathrooms are made with marble tiles, and kitchens boast granite cooking counters with stainless steel sinks. For some, it’s just not enough. Developers have included recreational areas like elevated jogging tracks, children’s play areas, gymnasiums with pools, party rooms, private theaters, and valet parking. But what sets luxury from over-the-top you may ask? Residential private bars. You heard right. Imagine your own private space where everyone knows your name! Now all it takes is an elevator ride to this private enclave of relaxation after a stressful day. We scouted out some of the best residential bars in town. Here’s what we found.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT 63 Wall Street Best known as the financial services hub of New York City, FiDi is becoming increasingly residential. Young professionals are flocking to the area drawn by the convenient transportation, newly renovated apartments, and striking waterfront views. In total, the building is home to 20,000-square-feet of amenity space. The original chandeliers have been kept in place, while new banquettes and bar seating were added for swanky comfort. In addition to the design, the speakeasy experience includes trained bartenders that create custom cocktails based on residents’ preferences. The Transcript also provides a light food menu that includes charcuterie and cheese amongst other items. The amenity was created by Pinnacle City Living who says it’s a wildly popular meeting place for all residents. BITS & BAILEY THE WHO, WHAT AND WOW OF THE LUXURY SCENE By Bailey Beckett

pring is almost here, which makes Bailey a happy bunny. And this month he’s hop-hophopping to what’s hot-hot-hot. BUSTING! Imagine doing a conga line with 80s rock legend Buster Poindexter. Well imagine no more because America’s favorite lounge lizard is bringing his act back to the storied Café Carlyle in the legendary Carlyle Hotel. Starting April 2 nd, Buster and his crew are performing favorite 80s hits and rhythm and blues ballads through the 13th. “Buster Poindexter aims dead center at a novelty tradition that traverses musical styles and eras and embraces blues, jazz, doowop, rumba and calypso. He rang the bell every time,” raved the New York Times. Buster is the pseudonym for the New York Dolls lead singer David Johansen, who shot to fame in the 80s with party-centric hits like “Hot Hot Hot.” Performances will take place Tuesday-Saturday at 8:45 pm. Info: ticketweb.com.

RUNNING! Keeping the 80s vibe going, one of the hottest events this season is The R Baby Foundation and Michael’s Mission’s Two Charities, One Mission: Saving Lives, an 80s-themed benefit concert on April 4, 2019 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. R Baby Foundation and Michael’s Mission are collaborating to save lives and to come together to make this benefit concert a uniquely unforgettable experience. Rev. Run from Run-DMC is confirmed to headline and close out the evening and will be accompanied by acclaimed DJ Mel DeBarge. The event is produced by Powered by Professionals and will feature awesome 80s activations like Pop Rocks Cocktails, a themed Candy Bar, classic arcade machines, and more! Get your tickets Info: rbaby foundation.org/eventshappenings. 52 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

INDULGING! Speaking of Palm Beach, one of the hottest restaurants in its proximity is the celebrated Chez l’Épicier in nearby Delray. Opened in 2015 by native Canadian husband and wife team, Chef Laurent Godbout and Veronique Deneault, the upscale eatery’s menu and approach to food is a veritable grocery list of farm fresh vegetables, market meats and seafood, with classic yet creative dishes featuring beet salad, goat cheese foam, quinoa lace cookie white balsamic and strawberry coulis; pulled lamb “tatin,” caramelized eggplant and red cabbage puree; dill and almond crusted snapper, marinated fennel and apple salad; and daily risotto dishes served in covered cast iron casserole dishes. Equally delicious and beautiful is the tableside presentation of Flambéed Lobster Cognac Parmesan Wheel which is a showstopper! More avant garde starters include avocado, sesame oil and yuzu tartare with puffed red quinoa; bone marrow, snails and cauliflower gremolata; and a Canadian favorite, Poutine. It’s gastronomic delight from beginning to end. Info: chezlepicier.com/palmbeach.

GLOWING! Nothing makes Bailey glow (figuratively and literally) more than luxury skin care products, and one of the most in-demand with NY glamizons is Guinot’s AntiDark Spot Serum, a new two-week treatment that works to reduce and brighten dark spots caused by sun exposure and aging. Perfect for those snow birds ready to depart Palm Beach after “the season” and prepare for the summer Hamptons. The serum rejuvenates the skin and restores a youthful appearance using vitamin C along with a range of 56 active ingredients to help stimulate cell renewal and boost collagen synthesis; melanoxyl and phytic acid are used to help reduce melanin production. You’ll look like a star after just two weeks. I should know, have you seen me lately? Info: guinotusa.com.

STAYING! Finally, my favorite nest of late is The Chatwal, a boutique hotel in the middle of the theater district. You heard that right—it’s on West 44th Street steps away from the most revered Broadway stages. You don’t expect luxury in this part of town, but there’s nothing more unexpected than this hidden gem. Featuring just 76 rooms, 29 of which are suites, The Chatwal was redesigned by celebrity decorator Thierry Despont, who gave it both modern and classic vibe at the same time. Bailey got a Roaring 20s vibe during a recent visit, which included lunch at the see-and-be-seen Lamb’s Club restaurant, where he once saw Anna Wintour and Gwyneth Paltrow pretending to eat in a corner banquette. The hotel recently launched a collaboration with Gwyneth’s yoga and spiritual guru Eddie Stern, who is also the co-founder of the Brooklyn Yoga Club and Ashtanga New York. His “Pause & Take a Breath” app, featuring nine 12-minute yoga lessons with music by Moby and available through Healthwirefm digital broadcast network, is now provided to hotel guests on a complimentary basis through the in-room and in-suite iPads. Complete with a Chatwal-red mat, yoga enthusiasts of all levels have convenient step-bystep instructions to calm the mind, improve resilience, and increase flexibility. TECH TALK

SCI-FI FANTASIES BECOMING A REALITY By Will Read

emember those science fiction movies which demonstrated incredible, life-changing gadgets? Well, several of these gadgets are either here or fast approaching technical viability. We caught up with Warren Wolf Kay, futurist and founder of MDRN, a New Yorkbased enterprise showcasing smart everything for your home. You can’t help thinking how creators of those old-time favorites could come up with the cell phone. Or, those plots of kids using voiceactivated services to fish the Internet and answer homework questions. Today, there are more innovations approaching technical maturity which means it is only a matter of time before the law and rules for their use are finalized before they appear in our lives. We drew on Warren’s expertise to identify some of the following trends leaving the realm of science fiction for science fact.

FLYING CARS & TAXIS Remember movies such as the Fifth Element from the 1990s with a future New York filled with flying vehicles? The technology is here. The 2019 CES show previewed the Bell Nexus electric air taxi which can transport four passengers plus a pilot; Uber is already shortlisting the company as one to work with. So flying to work could become a reality sooner rather than later. Currently, and only in Mexico City and Sao Paolo, Voom has introduced an on-demand helicopter taxi service. ENTER THE MATRIX It was a stunning visualization of an idea that virtual reality and reality could blend together. And while the conspiracy idea from the movie The Matrix maintains we have been conquered by aliens, it has not appeared to have happened. However, the idea of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are here to stay. Augmented Reality is where you can use the camera on your cell phone as a window to superimpose images on reality through the screen. For example, the newer cell phones have apps that enable you to measure distance in reality but identifying the line using the screen that you wish to measure with some accuracy. Companies such as Ikea have created an app that enables you to position an image of the desired piece of furniture in a mock room so you can evaluate how it will look and mesh with your environment. Virtual Reality is a step further whereby the entire world you view through a pair of goggles or glasses is artificially constructed. Some travel companies have used VR to transport the viewer into an immersive experience. For example, to attend a music concert or travel to a destination without leaving your home. Oculus’ Go Virtual Reality Headset is not just about games or watching immersive television but also has experiences such as sports or music where the goggles represent the equivalent of wide-screen television. Info: oculus.com.

ROBOTS, EVERYWHERE Science fiction has created robots to make our lives easier, to help us or just for companionship. Robots are here forever. Samsung has developed the Bot Air—an air purifying robot that has sensors and will move from room to room in a home as required. The Ovis suitcase from ForwardX tracks you and follows you—no more dragging luggage through an airport concourse. Look for Segway’s Loomo delivery robot to bring things to you. Info: segwayrobotics.com; forwardx. com; samsung.com.

VOICE-CONTROLLED EVERYTHING

LIVING BIG IN A SMALL SPACES

The computer, Hal from movie 2001: A Space Odyssey seemed far-fetched. And only ten years ago in the movie Iron Man, the hero has a computer that controls his home with voice commands. Amazing that this technology has entered the 21st century. And with as little as one hundred dollars and an Internet connection you can welcome Alexa into your home. Just about every new appliance and gadget is coming with voice control via integration with Alexa (Amazon), Google Home (Google) or Siri (Apple). In addition, other manufacturers are marketing appliances using voice-activated technology including iRobot with the Roomba i7 vacuum cleaner. Info: alexa. amazon.com; assistant.google.com; apple.com/siri.

Given that populations have become more urban-based and that with high real estate prices people are moving into ever smaller homes, the future of living has to adapt to enable people to maximize their space and have everything they need in a compact package. The Intelligent Living range of furniture is both customizable and can configure itself at the touch of a button (and soon by voice) to pack itself away or transform from a sofa into a bed for example. REAL ESTATE & YOUR HOME

AROUND TOWN LOWER EAST SIDE By TJ Johnson

he Lower East Side (LES) is roughly the area below Houston Street, from the East River to the Bowery. During the 1880s and 1890s, immigrants from Eastern Europe flooded into the cramped redbrick tenements. At the turn of the century this was the world’s largest Jewish settlement, an area that later became a center of culture and community that spawned many writers, businessmen, and intellectuals. Most of the upwardly mobile Jewish immigrants left as quickly as possible; today, this neighborhood is one of the most diverse places in Manhattan. LES has been completely gentrified. As you walk around, you will notice endless hip bars, clubs, galleries, and trendy cafes and restaurants. You should spend all day just walking around and visiting the unique one-of-a-kind shops and even get a tattoo!

WHAT TO SEE & DO Orchard Street The old pushcarts are gone, but bargain hunters still flock to this street, a seething indoor-outdoor bazaar of discount apparel and accessories. Hundreds of stores line Orchard Street and surrounding thoroughfares from East Houston to Canal Streets. Just remember: This kind of shopping is not for the faint of heart, but if you go prepared for the roughand-tumble of bartering and remember that not all stores take credit cards, you can turn up some jewels among the schlock— and have fun, too. 56 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

Orchard Street Today

Tenement Museum This small, fascinating museum—now a National Historic Landmark—is visited predominantly by the curious descendants of immigrants who fled to the U.S. at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The grim reality of the appalling hardships they faced is palpable here, where visitors on guided tours see cramped living spaces in recreated tenement apartments and learn about the lives of actual residents: the Gumpertz family, German Jews of 1916; and the Baldizzi family, Italian Catholics of 1935 to name but a few. Imaginative programs that focus on all facets of the immigrant experience include on-hour weekend walking tour of the historic Lower East Side, photographic and art exhibits, dramatic readings from immigrant literature, plays, film, and lectures. Located on Orchard Street (between Broome and Delancey Streets). Now I couldn’t possibly mention all the amazing restaurants and cafes in the area so I’ll just mention two of my favorite spots and leave the charm of exploring LES to you. For coffee and delicious dishes including the all-day brunch is MUD which also features a Beer & Wine Garden; there’s also available parking for your bike. Located at 307 East 9th Street (off Second Avenue). For a Mexican menu, try La Contenta for its authentic twist in the Heart of the Lower East Side. Dishes offer traditional Mexican fare with a French accent. The food and drinks are amazing. Located at 102 Norfolk Street; there’s also another outpost in Greenwich Village. A definite must. 204 Forsyth St Exterior

One Manhattan Square

DOWNTOWN LIVING LES is a great place to move to if you want to feel that “funky” New York energy and are into nightlife and different cultures. You tend to see a younger crowd working and having fun in NYC. If you want to buy or rent, you can still find several walkup apartments for rent and apartments for sale under $1 million. If you want that LES energy but still want to live in a high end apartment, here are a few buildings to consider. 204 Forsyth Street If you want luxury living but are not a fan of large buildings, here’s your address. With just 11 residences, 204 Forsyth Street boasts high ceilings, wide-plank oak floors, custom windows, and washer and dryers in each apartment. Act fast because there are only a few spots left. Prices start at $2.7 million for a twobedroom residence. One Manhattan Square If you are looking for waterfront and skyline views, this beautiful building soars into the sky and gives you some of the most amazing views of Manhattan and the outer boroughs. With the interior being designed by none other than Meyer Davis, these apartments feature custom kitchens and cabinetry, Miele premium appliances, and giant custom windows flooding the apartment with light and astonishing views. One Manhattan Square features 100,000 square feet of outdoor and indoor amenities including a full basketball court, wine room, billiard room, arcade, theater and performance space, a 75-foot swimming pool, and a 24-hour doorman and concierge service. Prices start at $1.2 million for a one-bedroom residence. Norfolk Atrium If you like contemporary, the Norfolk Atrium (115 Norfolk Street) is a 24-unit building with contemporary architecture, innovative technology, and luxury at its best. Every residence at the Norfolk features polished concrete ceilings and columns, white oak floors, alcove lighting, and washer and dryer hookups in each apartment. The kitchens afford black granite counters, Bosch cooktops, Liebherr refrigerators, and come with convenient electric garbage disposals. Norfolk also comes with private parking, a beautiful rooftop, and some apartments offer balconies, and terraces. Prices start at $1.15 million for a one-bedroom residence. This was just a small glimpse inside the Lower East Side. There is much in the area. If you would like to take a tour, I will be happy to take you on a tour and answer all questions you may have. Thelonious “TJ” Johnson is a licensed broker with Brown Harris Stevens, has teamed up with Ogden Starr, and enjoys sharing his tips on his favorite city. SUMMIT NEW YORK

SETTING NEW HEIGHTS FOR MODERN LIVING By Patricia Canole | Photos by Binyon Studios

ed by one of New York’s most prominent real estate investors, Lloyd Goldman, BLDG Management Co., Inc. introduces its first ever ground-up residential project in New York City. Located at 222 East 44th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues), Summit New York sets a new standard of luxury for a rental building in Midtown East. There’s no question the building is a diamond in the sky, representing elegance and sophistication. Standing 43 stories tall and encompassing 429 residences, it’s a collaboration between Handel Architects and Escobar Design by Lemay. “We had a strong vision and commitment to this project in differentiating it from other Manhattan rental buildings,” said Goldman, President of BLDG. “We wanted to create a rental that embodies the true luxury of a condo—from its high-end amenity package, exceptional architecture, to its upscale finishes and grand entry. Summit New York truly sets itself apart from the rest.”

THE LIVING IS EASY Soaring above the Grand Central neighborhood, Summit is one of the few buildings in Manhattan not to be parallel to the street. Handel created a trapezoidshaped structure with unique apartment layouts to maximize city skyline views from every angle, making all sides of the building visible and crafting a grand and sculptural presence in the skyline. The exceptional configuration of the building also creates an abundance of natural light and air access throughout.

Outdoor

The building features a sophisticated entryway—not typical in rental buildings—with a unique, throughblock circular drive court accompanied by a sculpture titled The Summit of Manhattan, a commissioned piece, by Australian artist Todd Stuart. The sculpture reinvents the enigmatic infinity symbol, crafted from high-grade stainless steel with a mirrored finish hovering above a reflecting pool. Continuing the flow of the elevated arrival, residents will enter a grand and elegant marble lobby featuring 30-foot ceilings, a luminous chandelier of sparkling glass leaves and a dramatic waterfall. MARCH 2019 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 59

THE RESIDENCES The residences at Summit, ranging from studio- to three-bedroom homes, feature floor-to-ceiling windows that range from 10 feet to a soaring 15 feet—painting a surreal backdrop of the city skyline. Handpicked to every last detail, Escobar elevated the interiors with custom wide plank oak flooring, and kitchens featuring Scavolini custom Italian cabinetry finished with Quartz countertops and full height backsplash, along with a full suite of integrated Bosch appliances. Each home comes equipped with its own washer and dryer, and many feature private terraces. Further embodying the “live above it all” experience, residences located on the 41st floor, are afforded kitchens outfitted with custom Scavolini cabinetry finished with matte glass and complemented with marble countertops and full height backsplash. Also featured are appliances by Wolf and Gaggenau including a wine chiller, recessed lighting and heated floors in the bathrooms. In addition, select Summit residences feature a wet bar and private terrace. “The Summit is the most elevated rental building in the Grand Central neighborhood, delivering an effortless and luxurious lifestyle to renters in the center of Manhattan through its finishes, amenities, services, and partnerships,” said Matthew Villetto, Senior Vice President of Douglas Elliman Development Marketing, the exclusive leasing and marketing team for the project. “It embodies the utmost commitment from BLDG, and we expect a sophisticated and international audience to be very drawn to the project.” Lounge

AMENITIES The building features a lavish collection of amenities, with its crown jewel being the Summit Lounge. Located on the 42nd floor, this firstclass lounge is the center of socialization with a private dining room and catering kitchen, marble service bar with seating, modern living room with fireside seating and private wine lockers—all with the spectacular skyline and East River as its backdrop. Additional amenities include the Club level which features a tech lounge, kid’s club, golf simulator, lounge with billiards and other games, and a screening room. Residents also have their own backyard in the middle of the Club level, equipped with grills, an outdoor bar, and theater with fireplace, green spaces, and a children’s play area. The Arena at Summit is a high-designed, state-of-theart fitness center complete with a basketball court, squash court, spin bikes, cardio machines and weights, and an aquatic center that includes an 18-meter heated indoor lap pool with natural sunlight from the overhead skylights, sauna, and steam rooms. The building also features a 230-car parking garage with valet, a pet spa and storage lockers. At the epicenter of Midtown East and the Grand Central neighborhood, Summit offers its residents unlimited access to transportation, cultural landmarks, outdoor leisure, and fine dining – the cosmopolitan neighborhood represents refined taste. Pricing at the Summit starts in the mid-$3,000s. For more information on Summit New York, visit summitnyc.com. •

CAPE CORAL SHINING BRIGHTLY By Lyle Seltzer

ape Coral is a vibrant and friendly community with all the beauty that you expect from Southwest Florida. With over 400 miles of salt and fresh water canals, it is a boaters paradise. HISTORY

Until the birth of Cape Coral, the area was simply known as “the other side of the river” by homesteaders, loggers, cattlemen, professional fishermen, and sportsmen. However, in 1957 Leonard and Jack Rosen changed that by purchasing a 103 square mile tract, known as Redfish Point, for $678,000. The Gulf American Corporation (GAC) was formed to develop this waterfront wonderland and on November 4th of the same year, ground was officially broken as Cape Coral. Early in 1958, a stretch of Miracle Mile—later named Cape Coral Parkway—extended east from Coronado and a main intersection was soon formed where it met Harney Point Road, now Del Prado Blvd. There was only one building located in Cape Coral, which was a four-plex at the corner of Cape Coral Parkway and Coronado Parkway, housing land sales offices. Through GAC, the development grew at a remarkable pace, and on June 10, 1958, the first residents moved in. These pioneers had to drive forever to get anywhere. Twenty miles for a loaf of bread was not uncommon. Cape Coral was promoted like no other Florida development, through a mail order program with ads on radio, television and print media. In 1959, water view home sites were sold for $990, waterfront was sold for $1,900, and riverfront cost $3,390. Property sales reached over $9 million after the first year and plane loads of curious northerners were soon flown down for a quick look and a heavy sales pitch, landing on an out-of-the-way strip, now called 47th Terrace. On March 14, 1964, the two-lane Cape Coral Bridge was opened to traffic, making the area even more accessible to potential buyers. In 1970, the city was finally incorporated with a population that stood at 11,470.

CAPE CORAL TODAY

Cape Coral is made up of 114 square miles of land and is the largest city in Southwest Florida as well as the largest city between Tampa and Miami. With golf courses, tennis courts, boat ramps, athletic parks, natural preserves and more, the quality of life in Cape Coral is second to none. The City of Cape Coral which is recognized as being a safe community has some of the best parks and recreation programs in the state, providing all types of activities and programs for young and the young at heart. Cape Coral satisfies the cultural and recreational needs of a diverse population. Residents and visitors are within easy reach of all sorts of activities and amenities: shopping, dining, theater and arts, sports (from children’s leagues to professional teams), clubs and organizations for just about every taste and hobby. For the active there are plenty of activities ranging from water sports to seeing nature up close and personal.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT

It’s no surprise, Cape Coral’s selling points are its warm weather, its coastal location on the Gulf-side, its chill vibe, and significantly lower real estate prices than both Miami and Key West, Florida. The unique canal system remains this community’s centerpiece, treasured for transportation and recreation alike. The area has seen a surge in retired veterans buying three-bedroom homes with palm trees out front. The reason? In 2012, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs opened the Lee County VA Healthcare Center, a 220,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art VA hospital in Cape Coral. Many others are investing in custom homes. Why not you? RELOCATING TO NORTH CAROLINA By Nadine Wynn

t can be fun to think about where you want to relocate. Perhaps you want a warmer climate or maybe it’s retirement. Consider Charlotte, North Carolina as a prime spot which is strategically located two hours from the Blue Ridge mountains and three hours from the Atlantic Ocean. Here you will find a good mix of professional sports, wineries, equestrian activities as well as boating, fishing, whitewater rafting, and plenty of golf. Additionally, there are Broadway shows and concerts to be seen. Whether it’s a relocation with family or wanting a slower-pace for retirement, consider Charlotte, North Carolina where the living is easy. Considering a move to North Carolina? Here, some important information you might find helpful: Lower Real Estate Taxes At Lake Norman which is just north of Charlotte, taxes range from $.50 per $100 of tax value to $1.50 per $100 of tax value. For example, on a $500,000 home taxes can range from $2,500 per year to $7,500 per year depending on which county you choose on Lake Norman. HOA dues and golf club memberships tend to be substantially lower than the NY, NJ and Long Island areas. Your Military Pension Military retirement pay may not be taxed at all if it meets specific requirements including if the veteran was “vested in the retirement system” for five years as of August 12, 1989. Otherwise, tax exemptions may be applicable up to $4,000 for single returns and $8,000 for joint returns. MONEY MATTERS

WHAT’S NEXT?

LIFE AFTER SELLING YOUR BUSINESS By Brian Luster

t’s an all too common occurrence: An entrepreneur identifies an opportunity to solve an unmet need in the community, dedicates their life to establishing a profitable enterprise and eventually exits the business with the expectation of a life of leisure and luxury— only to find they regret the decision. According to the Exit Planning Institute’s Readiness Survey, 75 percent of business owners “profoundly regretted” selling their business 12 months after finalizing the deal. How do so many individuals, with the freedom to live the life or create the legacy they desire, end up regretting their decision?

A NEED FOR A POST-SALE PLAN

FINDING THE RIGHT PATH

While financial concerns—such as a perceived failure to have maximized value from their sale, or the disregard for proper income planning in retirement—can certainly come into play, more often than not, the answer lies in their lack of understanding of how to manage their newfound freedom. There is a subsequent loss of identity and community that their former business provided for them. In fact, only 4 percent of business owners have a formal, written “life after business” plan—a testament to the lack of post-sale preparation and thoughtfulness endemic in the entrepreneurial mindset.

An entrepreneur will typically experiment with a new activity toward the tail end of the year following the sale. These activities rarely lead to significant, continued involvement. According to a 2012 study by Coutts, it took 66 percent of entrepreneurs two years or longer to find a lifestyle they were happy with. During this time, it is typical for post-sale entrepreneurs to explore the arts, government, teaching, mentoring, non-profit and for-profit boards. They may return to old interests or learn something new. Starting a new company and angel investing also seem to be common next steps. This initial transition period is meant to be a learning experience where entrepreneurs can experiment by matching values they perceive to be of personal importance with activities accessible to them in their community.

This should come as no surprise. Many business owners lack the time to engage in outside hobbies and interests. According to the National Federation of Independent Business, the largest small business association in the U.S., 71.1 percent of members take less than 10 days of vacation per year, despite the ability to set their own schedules. In the period leading up to a sale or transition, business owners should dedicate one day each week to experimenting with new hobbies, spending time with the family or connecting with old friends. A thoughtful transition should be a multiyear process that provides ample opportunity to focus on freedom, purpose and relationships. But post-sale life is often quite different than many expect. While 19 percent of post-sale entrepreneurs Those who did not devise a plan before the sale can still take steps after the planned to be active in social enterprises and nonsale to improve the chances of a successful transition. These include: profits, only 5 percent committed to these activities. • Taking time to rest and contemplate And although 28 percent had ambitions to invest in or • Reinvigorating relationships with friends and family support other businesses, only 11 percent actually did • Identifying values that are of utmost personal importance and matching so. In fact, 40 percent of post-sale entrepreneurs went them with appropriate activities back to work to start up or run another business, and 25 • Revisiting old hobbies or learning new skills percent went into retirement. • Engaging in charitable endeavors • Exercising regularly Still, some do find success pursuing civic, philanthropic • Traveling to places they have always wanted to visit or personal interests. Yet with only 40 percent of post-sale entrepreneurs stating that their life is more rewarding Developing a short-term game plan can be helpful as well. Choosing a single post-sale compared to when they were running their community activity to participate in, one new skill to learn and organizing an business, the key is finding activities that match the extended family vacation could be a viable start. Simplicity is key, yet there values and preferences of the former business owner must be enough activity to maintain a degree of the structure, routine and and learning how to develop identity and community intellectual stimulation that was present in life before the sale. through these post-sale endeavors. Finding purpose after a sale is never easy, but with time and a little work, each During this process, joining a peer group with other post-sale entrepreneurs, individual can wake up every day to a fulfilling life. such as Tiger 21, or engaging a coach to act as a sounding board is often recommended. Business owners may be used to moving fast, but at this stage, BNY Mellon Wealth Management conducts business they’ll need to learn to slow down. Once they have taken a few months to through various operating subsidiaries of The Bank of New decompress from the pressure of the sale process, they should find someone York Mellon Corporation. ©2019 The Bank of New York to talk with on a regular basis. PREGNANCY

GETTING YOUR PRE-BABY BELLY BACK By Shana Ackerman

regnancy can take a toll on a woman’s body. Most women experience substantial weight gain, and swelling, followed by post-partum weight loss. Rapid expansion of the skin often results in stretch marks. Furthermore, the abdominal wall muscles separate to accommodate a baby (diastasis recti) and sometimes do not fully come back together again. Many mothers struggle to get their bodies back to pre-baby shape. This can be discouraging. Often, despite diet and exercise, the post-baby belly does not fully resolve. We spoke with nationally recognized, New York-based Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. B. Aviva Preminger about the latest technologies and procedures available to patients looking to restore their pre-baby bellies. She explained that women have been relying on plastic surgery for years to reclaim their bodies after pregnancy. With the latest advances in technology and treatment modalities now available, restoring the pre-baby belly is easier and faster than ever before! We asked Dr. Preminger to discuss the most common concerns women face after pregnancy and what she recommends for women to reclaim their pre-baby figures.

STRETCH MARKS Stretch marks are caused by breaks in the dermis, the layer just beneath the skin’s surface. Most women develop stretch marks on their abdomens during pregnancy, however it is also common to get them on the breasts, thighs, hips, lower back and buttocks. While stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body, they are most likely to appear in places where large amounts of fat are stored. If stretch marks are the only concern for your post-baby belly, micro-needling is a wonderful option. Micro-needling is a minimally invasive procedure that promotes skin rejuvenation. The process of micro-needling triggers the body to create new collagen and elastin, improving the skin’s texture and firmness, helping to reduce scars and stretch marks. Micro-needling with radiofrequency may further aid this process. 68 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

LOOSE SKIN The abdominal skin stretches like a balloon during pregnancy. Post-pregnancy, however, it can become loose and “shriveled up” in texture, like a deflated balloon. Women who undergo cesarean section delivery may also have an indentation from their surgical scars. Weight loss and strength training cannot remove this excess tissue. Radiofrequency based skin treatments, such as Forma™ may help if there is a small amount of extra skin present. If a woman is nervous about surgery and wants to try a non-surgical approach first, Forma™ may be a great option because it is suitable for most skin types and for those seeking skin tightening without surgery. Forma™ helps lift, tone, and tighten. It is a completely noninvasive procedure that uses radiofrequency to target several layers of skin to improve elasticity and build collagen. For women with substantial skin excess, a tummy tuck may be required to achieve the desired results. A tummy tuck is specifically designed to contour the lower abdomen and remove excess skin. If a woman has a less significant bulge, I may recommend a mini-tummy tuck which focuses on removal of excess skin below the belly button. With either version of the tummy tuck, excess skin and fat is excised, along with tightening and flattening the skin and removing stretch marks.

TUMMY FAT & LOVE HANDLES Some women have residual excess fat, without abdominal muscle separation post-baby. To remove fat and re-contour the belly there are both non-surgical and surgical options. CoolSculpting is the ideal option for non-surgical fat reduction. CoolSculpting is completely non-invasive and is very affordable. While the effects are not as drastic as traditional liposuction, this procedure can be performed multiple times for optimal results. CoolSculpting will freeze fat over your stomach and love handles, resulting in a gradual reduction and elimination of fat. You can have the process repeated every six to eight weeks, until your ideal results are obtained. The best part is that there is no downtime and you can be back in the gym the next day! For the most dramatic results, energy assisted liposuction is the ideal option. Liposuction helps sculpt the body with the removal of unwanted fat. In most instances, I recommend BodyTite™ liposuction. This is a minimally invasive body contouring procedure that combines the fat reducing and sculpting procedure of liposuction with radiofrequency (RF) energy to increase skin tightening. The targeted delivery of RF energy heats the deeper layers of skin, resulting in immediate contraction and long term building of new collagen. BodyTite™ can be performed in my office under local anesthesia and, because it is minimally invasive, there is little downtime.

SEPARATED ABDOMINAL WALL No woman wants to continue to look pregnant months or years after her baby is born. Unfortunately, a significant abdominal muscle separation may make this the case. For some women, the separation is so severe that they continue wearing maternity clothing for months to years after delivery. Diastasis recti is the separation of the abdominal wall muscles, resulting in protrusion of the stomach. It is prevalent among women who have had several children or twin pregnancies or have carried very large babies. Some of these women experience a degree of improvement with exercise and physical therapy. However, for most of these women, the most effective solution is a tummy tuck. With a tummy tuck, I am able to bring the abdominal muscles back together, tightening the core. It is as if my patient is given an internal corset. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and patients may return to the gym with their newly contoured waistlines in 4-6 weeks. Pregnancy is a transformative experience. I enjoy being able to help mothers gain back the self confidence that they may have lost due to the physical changes that come from pregnancy. Luckily, the latest cosmetic treatment options can target these changes, addressing women’s concerns and helping them restore their pre-baby waistlines. For more information on B. DR. ARIEL OSTAD

TURNING BACK THE HANDS OF TIME By Ruth J. Katz

illers are the workhorse for fighting aging,” points out Dr. Ariel Ostad, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon on the Upper East Side. He further explains that today there is a plethora of diverse fillers available, each of which can help subtly transform a face, temporarily reversing the march of time. “I work like a painter with a palette, and can ‘sculpt,’ as if it were, with a syringe. It is important to study each face,” he explains, “to determine which fillers will work best to achieve the desired results for a particular patient.” In practice over 20 years, Dr. Ostad has an impeccable CV: A graduate of both New York University (magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) and its medical school, he went on to do an internship at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard Medical School, and then a residency in dermatology, including cancer studies, at NYU. He completed a fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery, laser, and cosmetic surgery at UCLA. A highly entrepreneurial professional, Ostad was faced with challenges when he arrived in America at age 12 from Iran, with an older sister, sans parents, who followed a few years later: He spoke no English and he says he watched a lot of TV to augment his more formal lessons! The two youngsters were under the wing of an uncle, a physician, whom he admired. The sciences, he notes, fascinated him. “Yet,” he states, “I was innately drawn to the arts, too, and I wanted to find a way to combine both.” Inspired by his uncle, he felt that medicine “was a way to meld art and science.” Today, as a clinical assistant professor of the Department of Dermatology at his alma mater, he hopes that he can, in turn, enthuse his students. He has always been a self-starter and within a year-and-a-half of completing his studies, he opened a practice. The Upper East Side was always aspirational to him, so that is where he chose to hang his proverbial shingle. Today, his practice has a staff of a dozen and in addition to teaching and maintaining office hours, he has found the time to develop a line of over 20 products for skin care. New York Lifestyles recently sat down with him to discuss “turning back the hands of the clock.” Explain the effects of aging on the face. Underlying collagen is lost with age and the skin is simply not as tight as it used to be. A laxity develops, presenting with, among other things, jowls, thinning and sagging of the lips, flattening of the upper cheeks, and sagging of the neck that creates vertical bands, that gobble look. Laugh lines develop, the eyebrows drop, there is sagging of the upper eyelids, and crow’s feet and forehead creases start to appear. This loss of collagen is apparent in other areas of the body, as well—even the hands present hollows and the buttocks droop. And not to be overlooked, there is a psychological toll on people. So, what can we do? My approach is multi-pronged, and might include, in addition to fillers, ultrasound to tighten the face, and perhaps even liposuction. Patients don’t want down time these days and fillers have given us exciting, new technologies and techniques that don’t necessitate at-home recovery time. Addressing these issues early—in the late 20s or early 30s—helps to avoid surgery for a longer period. Ultrasound delivers waves of energy deep into the tissue, and unlike lasers, which treat the surface, ultrasound can penetrate to deeper levels and lift the skin, improving the jaw line, tightening the neck, and lifting the eyelids.

Please explain a little more about ultrasound, how it is administered. Ultherapy is non-invasive and ultimately lifts and tightens. The results happen steadily, but they begin immediately with a gradual stimulation of collagen. That collagen helps lift the skin, but it does not create volume; the loss of fatty tissue below the skin needs to be addressed with fillers. It is why I say it is a multi-pronged approach. And what about more invasive measures? Liposuction, performed with local anesthesia, is far less complicated than it once was; today we have microcannulas, which are extremely blunt and because they are not sharp, they can safely suction out fat with no bleeding or pain. Moreover, patients can go back to work in a few days. For more information on Dr. Ariel Ostad, visit drarielostad.com. • MARCH 2019 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 73

TBAR A SLEEK STEAKHOUSE THAT WILL STEAL YOUR HEART By Anne Raso

ne visit to the Upper East Side’s TBar will “seal the deal” to be in the Top 10 of your goto restaurants in the city. That sounds like an extreme amount of praise but it not only has succulent grass-fed prime beef in nearly every restaurant grade cut available but it has Modern American dishes of both the comfort and health-oriented varieties. Pardon the use of a cliché, but there is something for everyone here—from the legendary super-creamy mac and cheese to the house salad which is lightly dressed, citrusy and chock full of organic wild greens and sliced hearts of palm. TBar excels at Modern American cuisine but is very inventive at the same time. As Executive Chef Benjamin Zwicker told us, “We try and stick to the fundamentals of cooking using classic French and traditional Italian cuisine as a starting point and include Asian and Latin influences.” TBar is truly an Upper East Side mainstay with a lot of neighborhood regulars each night. The secret to getting a regular crowd—which is arguably the “golden ticket” to staying afloat in this super-competitive business—is remarkably basic. “The secret is consistency, quality and making them feel like family,” Zwicker says. “We have been here many years, and our dining room is almost like a second home for many customers.”

A WHO’S WHO OF WORLD-CLASS CHEFS Don’t be surprised if you see a well-known chef venture into the kitchen unannounced (that says it all for the quality of TBar’s fare!) to cook alongside Zwicker or observe his culinary technique and dedication. “We have many world-class chefs who live in the neighborhood and are regulars at TBar. I have had the great pleasure to cook with and learn from some of them in our kitchen—and, of course, to cook for them. One of the highlights was having Chef Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin compliment us on our steaks.” (TV host Hoda Kotb even included TBar as one of her favorites in a New York Post article called “My New York!”) During the times we’ve dined at TBar, we’ve observed a huge bar crowd We’ve seen everyone from 20-somethings who just moved into the neighborhood and elegant Park Avenue ladies to doctors who just got off shifts at Lenox Hill Hospital and even fashionistas taking a break from the NYFW shows. It’s not loud, though. The bar area is as warm and welcoming as the dining room, which features lime green leather chairs and glass dividers etched with flowers and other natural themes. Zwicker opines, “Although we have all sorts of clientele come in, our bar crowd is mostly comprised of mature singles from the neighborhood who come to enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail, maybe dine at the bar and appreciate the informal elegance and gracious hospitality of our staff, many of whom have become regulars over the years.” 74 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

T-Bar Chef Ben Zwicker

SOURCING THE FRESHEST MEAT & PRODUCE Zwicker has a real hands-on approach to the quality of the products that come into his kitchen. Every bit of produce has the super fresh “crunch,” and all meat is succulent and juicy. We just had to ask Zwicker if TBar has a local farm to table policy for meat and produce and if he hand selects his purveyors. He responded, “We do not have a cast iron farm to table policy because of the volume we do and the importance we place on consistency. However, we do use local vegetables in season, and our poultry and eggs are always from nearby farms. We have been working with a handpicked group of purveyors, many of whom we have been working with for over twenty years.” Zwicker continued to explain that he employs four different meat suppliers, each one picked because they have the very best cut: one for the Porterhouse, one for the NY strip, and one for the ribeye. The same goes for fish. There are four different purveyors for the oysters, jumbo prawns, and all fish. “We take quality and consistency very seriously, and we expect the same from our purveyors.”

T-Bar Steak & Lounge Porterhouse

A CARNIVORE’S DELIGHT And for you hardcore carnivores out there—we think that meat-wise, TBar rivals any of the famous NYC steakhouses. We were curious to know the most popular items on the menu. Chef Zwicker answers matter-of-factly, “We do sell a lot of Porterhouse and prime dry-aged NY Strip Steaks, but we do have many regulars who dine with us a few times a week for both lunch and dinner, so our chopped salad with grilled salmon or chicken sells very well.” What new dishes will be added to the menu for Spring? Zwicker states proudly, “We are going to add a few new items: Crispy Sushi with a choice of Spicy Tuna, Hamachi, Salmon and Sliced Tuna; Roasted Spring Vegetable and Quinoa Salad as well as a Grilled Baby Lamb Chop appetizer.” Those with a sweet tooth need to know that TBar’s desserts are creative, delicious and very large. We’ve seen two or three people unable to finish the Warm Apple Crisp with Vanilla Gelato. Some other popular choices include the Banana Parfait Mille Feuilles with coconut and caramel sauce, as well as a Strawberry Sundae which easily serves three to four people.

Bottom line: TBar is not cheap, but the satisfaction factor is ultra-high. We have to give them extra points for incredible consistency—you can count on your meat cooked precisely the way you like it. The wait staff here is attentive and serves food as fast as possible realizing that your time is valuable. And if it’s something extra you wish, like their remarkable Poivre sauce (which is a must-have with their steaks), it appears like magic. As a foodie pal of ours states, “You always know what you are going to get at TBar— even the baked potatoes taste like something special!”

Tuna tartare

TBar is ideal for family occasions (kids are welcome) and perfect for any situation where there may be different dietary preference or needs. They are happy to accommodate unusual diets, but you will undoubtedly find something for everyone on the menu. For more information on TBar, visit tbarnyc.com. THE BEST IRISH BARS IN NYC

WHERE TO FIND BEER, GRUB, AND A JOLLY GOOD TIME By Darren Paltrowitz

ven if you do not have Irish roots, the odds are that you will find yourself reveling on March 17th. While New York is not short on great spots to grab a pint of Guinness, it can be somewhat difficult to pick a pub that has not only fantastic offerings at the bar but also delicious offerings from the kitchen. To help you with your 2019 St. Patrick’s Day planning, here are some great Irish pubs and restaurants to stop by after the parade. THE DEAD RABBIT Financial District Ranked #1 in the past few years, this place has been the go-to drinking spot in the Financial District for both locals and tourists alike. “At The Dead Rabbit, we always team up with the best whiskey producers in Ireland,” said co-owner Jack McGarry. “It’s very culturally important for us.” As for what to expect from The Dead Rabbit this March 17th, think tradition. “For us, St. Patrick’s Day is about celebrating everything great about Ireland—our hospitality, our inclusivity, and our products. In Ireland, it’s much more of a family and friends affair,” explained McGarry, who noted that his favorite item on the menu is the Irish coffee. Be sure to try their own Dead Rabbit Irish Whiskey. MOLLY’S PUB & RESTAURANT SHEBEEN Gramercy Known to refer to itself as “the most authentic Irish bar in New York City,” Molly’s was founded in 1960. With a logburning fireplace and sawdust on the floor, it’s renowned for its Shepherd’s Pie, Hamburgers, and Steaks—all for reasonable prices. Its original bar, as constructed from both wood and Honduran mahogany, is still intact all these years. Co-owner Peter O’Connell considers Molly’s to be a “destination pub.” He explained: “We are a conversation pub and do not do any special events or promotions.” In spite of treating St. Patrick’s Day like just another day at work, O’Connell expects a “full house” on the 17th and recommends all to try their “award-winning 10 ounce burger.” Info: mollysshebeennyc.com.

SWIFT HIBERNIAN LOUNGE NoHo Established in 1995 by Danny McDonald and Mike Jewell— and later joined by Anthony Malone—Swift Hibernian Lounge is a low-key bar known for offering one of the finest selections of beer and Irish whiskey in New York. Swift also features a good selection of oysters and sliders beyond its whiskey and pints. Further notable about the establishment is that it does not have a television, keeping the focus on the hospitality and overall atmosphere. Be sure to catch their literary brunch (held after St. Patrick’s Day). It’s a nice alternative to the madness of the big day. The owners invite diners to read from their favorite Irish authors in a cozy atmosphere. Info: swiftnycbar.com.

THE LANDMARK TAVERN Hell’s Kitchen Patrick Henry Carley opened the Landmark Tavern, an Irish waterfront saloon, in 1868; there was no 12th Avenue back then. A family establishment and then some, the Carley’s raised their children upstairs on the second and third floors of the building. One of the oldest continually operating establishments in New York, The Landmark Tavern is mainly known for its classic Old World charm. As always, St. Patrick’s Day will have Irish music playing all day, good atmosphere, and great food. What sort of food, you ask? Corned beef and Cabbage, Shepherd’s Pie, Irish Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips, Scotch Eggs and, Lamb Shanks served with Roasted Red Potatoes in Cabernet Mint au Jus. Info: thelandmarktavern.com.

LILLIE’S VICTORIAN ESTABLISHMENT Times Square/Union Square Noted to “celebrate friendship the old fashioned way,” Lillie’s Victorian Establishment has locations in Times Square and Union Square. Named for British actress Lillie Langtry, Lillie’s co-owner Tommy Burke explained, “We’re proud to honor her legacy and wanted to create an establishment that combines ostentatious décor with a down-to-earth ambiance. We want our bars to celebrate these legendary pioneers and create destinations that welcome all.” St. Patrick’s Day holds a lot of significance to both Burke and co-owner Frank McCole. “Coming from County Mayo and County Monaghan, St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday at home, but celebrating the Feast of Saint Patrick in New York City has become a memorable tradition for us.” He continued to tell us “our guests can kick back with a pint of Guinness. We will have special menus for St. Patrick’s Day with Irish classic comfort dishes.” Burke mentioned their Afternoon Tea is a favorite, too, at the Times Square location featuring a tea selection, tea-infused cocktails, savory sandwiches, and sweets. It’s a great afternoon treat, especially for the theatergoers during the week. Info: lilliesnyc.com. 78 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

PETER MCMANUS CAFÉ Chelsea Peter McManus, a native of County Longford, first opened his bar in Hell’s Kitchen in 1911, moving it some 20 years later to its current corner spot in Chelsea. The much-loved Irish bar is now run by a third-generation McManus (grandson Justin) who boasts that it is “the oldest family-run bar in New York City.” Step inside and you’ll be surrounded by the warm and welcoming front room, with a tin ceiling, wood paneling, mahogany bar, and three Tiffanystained glass cabinets. The back dining room is just as handsome and offers tasty yet straightforward classics, such as Strip Steak and award-winning Burgers. Guinness, Irish cider and McManus’s house ale are on tap; there’s also an excellent selection of Irish whiskeys. Info: petermcmanuscafe.com.

MCSORLEY’S OLD ALE HOUSE East Village McSorley’s has long been known to be the oldest bar in town having been established in 1854. However, it is not so much a bar as it is an institution in the city. Its present owners are stubbornly proud of this legendary bar and its authenticity—and the fact the bar remains almost impervious to change in this fastchanging world. The interior, with its portraits, posters, paraphernalia, stovepipe and sawdust floor, is pretty much as it was when it first opened. One thing has changed: women were allowed access to the “gentleman’s preserve” in 1970. It’s nice to know that it still only serves its own light and dark ale. (The bar’s motto will always remain: Be good or be gone.) Info: mcsorleysoldalehouse.nyc.

DONOVAN’S PUB Woodside, Queens Catch the No. 7 subway to Woodside where you’ll find this favorite on one of the most populated streets in Queens— though you’d never know it from the inside. The tavern has maintained its Celtic spirit in a nearly unchanged space since 1966. The cozy atmosphere is enhanced with the addition of antiques and stained glass windows and offers a reliable selection of on-tap beers and its famous Beef Burgers. Info: donovansny.com.

THE WICKED MONK Bay Ridge, Brooklyn If this Brooklyn pub looks a little like a church, you’re right on track. That’s because most of the interiors were salvaged from a house of worship. The wooden bar, stained glass windows, and beer barrels were all shipped to Brooklyn from a monastery in Cork, Ireland. The rest of the structure is decidedly “unholy.” However, look to the ceiling and you’ll see the famous mural featuring floating monks with a beer in hand. Grab a bar stool, order a pint, and make friends with the locals. Info: wickedmonk.com. Not all of these establishments require a reservation but do yourself a favor and research whether one may be preferable for your chosen locale. BROADWAY: BEHIND THE SCENES CHOREOGRAPHER CHASE BROCK By Bailey Beckett

t’s one of the most anticipated shows of the season. Be More Chill, based on the best-selling novel by Ned Vizzini, brings a modern-day fantasy to the halls of high school. What if you could take a pill and suddenly be too-cool-for-school? That’s the storyline behind this buzzed-about play coming to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre starting March 10th. Its Off-Broadway shows earned critical acclaim, including from the Wall Street Journal, which raved “See it now if you can wrangle a ticket because it’s going to hit big—deservedly so.” Keeping the same cast and crew intact, the show is again directed by Stephen Brackett, with music and lyric by Joe Iconis. Bringing the moves to life choreographer is Chase Brock, one of the most celebrated talents in live theater. A veteran of the stage, including SpiderMan: Turn Off the Dark, the 35-year-old has helmed the Brooklyn-based contemporary dance company for ten years, and 30 productions. He talks with New York Lifestyles about his latest work, and why Be More Chill is being called the next Dear Evan Hansen. 80 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

Choreographer Chase Brock

What’s the storyline/message behind Be More Chill? It takes place in and around a high school in New Jersey, where an unpopular teenager discovers the existence of a pill containing a tiny Japanese supercomputer—a SQUIP—which he buys from the back room of a Payless shoe store, and which teaches him how to be cool... at a cost. For me, the show is about trusting your gut and learning to block out the unhelpful noise and be comfortable in your skin. Going to Broadway is a big move. What are your feelings behind that? How are you dealing with the pressure/bigger expectations? This is my sixth time on Broadway (first as a performer, then as an assistant, then as a choreographer) and I am over the moon to be returning to this most hallowed ground of American theater with this particular show, which I choreographed in its world premiere and its Off-Broadway premiere. I have been part of the creation of almost 30 new musicals and part of 5 Broadway musicals, but I’ve never had the experience of moving a show from the initial production all the way to Broadway. I’m glad that I’m old enough and experienced enough to know how rare that is. My personal goal is to be as present as possible for every moment of this experience and not to miss a thing, and I think the only pressure I’m feeling is the pressure to tell our story as clearly and truthfully as possible. What do you think audiences take away from this? I hope this show, first and foremost, entertains and delights audiences. But I also hope that it bolsters anyone in need of an extra dose of confidence to stand in their own shoes and boldly be their quirky, strange, weird, wild and wonderful self. This idea—taking a pill to transform your life—has been explored in everything from Limitless to even The Matrix. What is it about this notion that resonates with audiences? I think the allure of a quick fix must just be wired into our DNA, and when you apply that in a sci-fi context, it’s just too delicious for artists and audiences to resist. Interestingly, there are current developments in medicine that are eerily similar to the technology of the pill in our show—pills that contain not only cameras and tracking devices, but that can be programmed to trigger certain effects or activities in our brains. I feel like this grounding, in reality, adds to the gravity of our plot, and surely this will only become more resonant as progress marches on. Are there any changes being made to the new Broadway production? Over the past three years, we’ve always been working across departments to get to the most authentic, most profound version of our characters and story, and that cross-departmental effort continues as we head toward our first performance on Broadway. I can’t give any spoilers here, but I think fans of the show will be pleased to see how their favorite characters have continued to evolve. I also think new audiences will discover the latest, greatest version of this story on Broadway, in the version we’re lovingly calling 3.0 (following 1.0 at Two River Theater in New Jersey in 2015 and 2.0 Off-Broadway last summer). Reviews have been great. How do you think critics will receive the new production? Oh, my goodness, you never know. In my 20 years of working on and off Broadway, I have learned that you cannot predict or count on reviews, and that, as an artist, practicing a true non-attachment to the critical outcome is the healthiest way to sustain a career in theater. Personally, I make work to communicate with the audience, and it is the audience who ultimately decide if your show will succeed or fails. Entertainment consumption has changed so drastically in just the last ten years, especially with the rise of streaming platforms, but live theater has been resilient. What do you owe that to? I love all of these new ways to consume entertainment, but we will never shed our desire to gather in a room and share stories in the dark. That’s a fundamental and necessary part of being human, and I love theater that leans into the things that theater does well and harnesses the kind of magic that can only happen in the theater. Masks, puppets, pageantry, dance, music, metaphor, ritual, community, catharsis, transcendence, transformation. What are your plans beyond Broadway? I’m directing an evening celebrating music from television for the 92nd St Y’s Lyrics and Lyricists series in May. Also, I’m choreographing the stage adaptation of the Disney animated feature Hercules for The Public Theater’s Public Works program in September, as well as reviving my dance company The Chase Brock Experience’s The Four Seasons Off-Broadway in November. • MARCH 2019 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 81

ON THE BIG SCREEN By Jenny Peters

SPRING-BREAK FAVORITES CAPTAIN MARVEL Rated: PG-13 The huge success of the fierce femalefilled Marvel flick Black Panther has led Marvel Comics to bring another woman to the forefront of the action. Captain Marvel has been a comic-book hero since the 1960s, with changing personas both male and female over the years, but now U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers (as played by Oscar winner Brie Larson) owns that title—along with a set of superpowers and a cool costume. The first Marvel film with a solo female lead, this one’s also got an intergalactic war and—naturally—lots of fight scenes. DUMBO Rated: PG Tim Burton brings his slightly offcenter cinematic vision to the Disney animated classic Dumbo in this liveaction version of the beloved story. Dumbo is still a baby circus elephant who can fly, but this time all the humans involved are real people. That means Eva Green, Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton get to chew up the scenery as denizens of the big top. WONDER PARK Rated: PG Animation fans will hear lots of familiar voices in Wonder Park, the eye-popping adventure that one little girl takes through a very special amusement park. See if you or your kids can recognize all the big stars who help make this kid’s tale come to life, ranging from Jennifer Garner and Kenan Thompson to Mila Kunis, John Oliver, Ken Jeong and Matthew Broderick.

TRUE-TO-THE-TIMES PERIOD PIECES THE CHAPERONE Not yet rated If Downton Abbey was your favorite TV show and Gosford Park is a film you remember fondly, then rejoice! Writer-producer Julian Fellowes returns with this 1920s tale of a chaperone and her charge, dancer-actress Louise Brooks. As Brooks begins to find her way to her eventual career as a silent screen superstar, the pair has to navigate how to get her from Kansas rube to sophisticated city starlet. Haley Lu Richardson and Elizabeth McGovern star in this delicious comedy-drama. 82 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

THE KID Not yet rated Vincent D’Onofrio takes the reins of this classic Western tale, returning to the oft-told story of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. As director and co-writer of the oater, D’Onofrio offers his take on the tale of the sheriff and the outlaw, as seen through the eyes of a young boy (Jake Schur). Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt and Dane DeHaan saddle up and bring the Old West back to the big screen in this intense drama.

DOOM-FILLED DRAMAS HOTEL MUMBAI Rated: R Dev Patel and Armie Hammer share the screen in this intense look at the real-life terrorist attack on the luxury Taj Mahal Palace Hotel located in the heart of Mumbai, India. That 2008 attack led to a bloody siege and gripped the world’s attention for three days, as hotel guests, employees and others struggled to stay alive and foil the attackers, who took many of them hostages. Nazanin Boniadi, Amandeep Singh and Jason Issacs also star. US Rated: R Jordan Peele is back with more scariness, after taking home an Oscar last year for his Get Out screenplay. He wrote and directed this one too, a creepy story of two families vacationing together, a trip that devolves into terrifyingly weird occurrences. Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss, Winston Duke, Tim Heidecker and Anna Diop co-star. YARDIE Not yet rated Actor Idris Elba takes his first stab at directing a feature film with Yardie, a personal drama that takes place between Kingston, Jamaica, and London, in the 70s and 80s. It’s a mashup of crime drama and music-industry saga, meaning a terrific soundtrack juxtaposed against some pretty violent moments. Ami Ameen, Antwayne Eccleston and Fraser James star in this film festival, art house favorite. • MARCH 2019 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 83

DELIGHTFUL COMEDIES ABBY’S NBC NBC is hoping that viewers will belly up to the bar at Abby’s, the new comedy about an ex-Marine who opens her own unlicensed local bar in her San Diego backyard. With a cast of barflies worthy of Cheers, led by actress Natalie Morales (White Collar) as Abby, the bartender who makes her own rules—like no cellphones at her bar. That’s going to make for some funny conversations, right? SHRILL Hulu Aidy Bryant of Saturday Night Live fame branches out with her own sitcom in Shrill, as she acts out the adventures of an overweight woman who loves her body, but not her terrible boyfriends and demanding parents. She’s got the backing of producers Lorne Michaels (the SNL head honcho) and Elizabeth Banks, who both know something about being funny.

DISTURBING DOCUMENTARIES LEAVING NEVERLAND HBO The controversial documentary about pop superstar Michael Jackson’s sexual relationships with two young boys took the January 2019 Sundance Film Festival by storm and led to lawsuits by the Jackson family. But HBO grabbed this disturbing two-part look at the claims made by the now-grown-up men, Wade Robson and Jimmy Safechuck, giving the world a chance to watch and decide whether the King of Pop was a pedophile or not. THE CASE AGAINST ADNAN SYED HBO Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Amy Berg was inspired by the popular podcast Serial to go even deeper into the murder case against Adnan Syed. Syed, who was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999 in Baltimore, insists he is innocent. This four-part series investigates beyond the podcast as Syed attempts to have his case re-tried. Is he guilty or not? You be the judge. 84 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

DIVERSE DRAMAS HANNA Amazon Prime Fans of the 2011 spy thriller Hanna will love to settle in for a binge of this action-drama based on the same story, of a teenage girl who gets her first assignment after a lifetime of training to be an assassin. Her mercenary father has made her into this killing machine, keeping her in a remote wilderness; as the story begins, she is set loose on the world. The series’ producers promise that this one won’t quite follow the original, as Esme CreedMiles takes on the title role. THE WIDOW Amazon Prime Kate Beckinsale returns to the small screen after close to 20 years of making movies with The Widow, following a woman’s wild adventure that begins in a small Welch town and soon takes her into the Democratic Republic of Congo. That’s where her husband is supposed to have died, but this widow doesn’t believe he’s actually gone. With many story strands weaving through this dangerous quest to find the truth, there’s no doubt that Beckinsale will use some of those Underworld fighting skills that helped make her famous. THE FIX ABC R o b i n Tu n n e y ( T h e Mentalist) returns to dramatic TV, once again inside the justice system. But this time she’s an attorney, not a cop, in this drama filled with murder, revenge and second chances that springs from the mind of real-life district attorney Marcia Clark (the woman who prosecuted O. J. Simpson). THE VILLAGE NBC T he Villag e is a c tu a l ly an apartment building in Brooklyn, where a diverse set of residents— living New York City lives— intertwine and intermingle. ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER CRAIG WATSON, BAKED CRAVINGS By Patricia Canole

raig Watson loves sweets. So much so that the founder of Baked Cravings, a New York City bake shop created the city’s newest sensation. Nut-free. He’s dedicated to building and maintaining a nut-free facility by using only the highest-quality ingredients sourced from quality vendors. It’s his passion to also follow strict packaging processes and conducting regular testing to provide pastries for children to enjoy and parents to trust. However, Watson did not go to school for baking and all that goes with it. After spending many years in the financial world helping companies become profitable with sound business decisions, he decided his love of baking and a passion for owning a successful business would be for him. That was in 2017. Watson’s enthusiasm is contagious; he loves creating new sensations for Cravers (loyal customers who come back for more cravings). We headed uptown to Lexington Avenue and 105th Street to visit Baked Cravings to get to know its affable owner, Craig Watson. Tell us about your background. Were you always a passionate baker? Actually I have a background in finance with a degree in accounting and a master’s degree in marketing. Originally I was a CFO of a bakery in New York City which downsized and wanted only to sell products online. Realizing there was a void of nutfree, peanut-free treats in New York City, I decided to open up Baked Cravings. I know that food allergies are a very serious matter. In fact, it’s personal: my daughter has a food allergy so I know that a lot of kids and adults cannot tolerate certain foods. So much so that it gets overlooked when it comes to parties and gifts. Tell us how you start your day. I start my day off by checking our website for new orders and making sure that we have all our orders prepared and ready for delivery or pickup. Then, it’s ordering supplies for the bakery and making sure that everyone is prepared to start the day. 90 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

Craig with a loyal customer

When do you end your day? Or, do you? I end my day basically the same way I started it. Making sure that we are prepared to fulfill any of the orders we have coming up the next day, checking out the website making changes and updating with photos. I also handle social media responding to e-mails and requests as well as scheduling meetings, going through marketing ideas and customer relations. What’s your strategy to keep focused? What would we be without technology? I use Google and use it for reminders on my phone. I’m a big fan of the Samsung Note which makes multi-tasking simple and complete. I believe in being organized and I think that really helps speed up the process. When you were a kid what did you want to be? Thinking back, I really didn’t have anything particular in mind. I just knew that I wanted to be successful. What did you learn from the worst boss you ever had? I learned that if you refuse to continue to expand your knowledge base that you will become obsolete. Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work? I would have to say my daughter who recently passed away from cancer. She was very driven, very hard working and never looked for praise or awards. Her name was Faith and she was always focused and never complained. What was your first business idea and what did you do with it? My first business was with two friends. We started a hip-hop music label and had some moderate success—nothing really big. But we did okay! What was an early job that taught you what’s truly important or useful? As a youngster, I was a proud member of the Boys Club. Many times I would help out on Bingo nights and enjoyed working in the kitchen with the staff. It’s there I learned people really do appreciate good customer service. What’s the best advice you’ve ever applied to your life? That would have to be what you believe and what you say is what you manifest in reality. What’s the worst piece of advice you ever received? When you finish school get a good job stay there for 30 years and retire. Then you’ll be happy. I’m so happy I never took that to heart! What does work-life balance mean to you? We are a small company and we’re growing and I have plans to expand. For us it’s more of a work is life and life is work type of atmosphere. You can frequently find my kids in the shop helping me out. Of course, I always make sure for family getaways to reset and recharge. How do you prevent burnout? That’s sometimes hard to do. I just take the time to relax. Or if I’m faced with a creativity block, I hit the gym. I find the treadmill or elliptical a great way for me to think of some creative processes. What does the future hold for Baked Cravings? Right now I’m focusing on learning detailing of the processes and functions that would allow me to expand and duplicate several Baked Cravings in select areas. This involves surrounding myself with the appropriate people that would further implement growth. For a special birthday girl

MY NEW YORK STORY MATT GREEN By Lee A. Gabay

alking the streets of New York City is something millions do daily. Spending time in all five boroughs is not uncommon. But having walked all 8,500 plus miles of New York City’s streets and parks is a rare accomplishment recently performed by Matt Green. Matt’s endeavor to traverse the entirety of the metropolis began a few years after he moved to the city from his home in Virginia. Once in Manhattan, he forged a successful career at a civil engineering firm before hungering for something less routine and more adventuresome. He quit his job to embark on a series of travel-related exploits which included riding the entire subway system in a record 24 hours and 2 minutes, a “Bridges of New York County” walk involving 19 major overpasses, and a 5-month long cross-country trek on foot from Rockaway Beach, New York to Rockaway Beach, Oregon.

CONCRETE PLANS Upon return from his celebratory jump in the Pacific Ocean, Matt’s wanderlust called for something epic, with his playground being the entirety of the biggest city on the planet. “Instead of seeing a million places for just a minute each, I wanted to spend a million minutes exploring just one place: New York!” shares Matt. More of a scientist than a slacker, Matt’s focused energy and impeccable organizational skills allowed him to experience the massive city grid in all its glory while sharing the sights and insights on his blog I’m Just Walkin’. In it, the good-humored, extremely outgoing traveler maps out where he’s been and details his discoveries along the way. Rife with history and scholarly ruminations, Matt lightens the tone by including random fun findings such as the world’s largest tennis ball mosaic (10,084 balls), a 76-foot tall pencil (which was noticed by the police after being picked up by satellite surveillance), and a massive sculpture in High Bridge Park inspired by Seurat’s painting Sunday in the Park with George, made out of potato chip bags. 92 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2019

“I’ve gained a deeper connection to the city’s past and present through an up-close look at the great scenery both big and small,” he says. He further offers that the most rewarding part of his walk is the opportunity to connect with the always colorful New Yorkers. “People want to talk. They are eager to share their stories and proud to show off their communities, homes and hearts.” Matt sees the Big Apple as a massive collection of many small towns and observes that its inhabitants generally stay in their neighborhoods. He is aware enough to know that his city walk is a privileged luxury and realizes that to some people, walking is not a hobby or a fun-filled endeavor, but their only option.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS Matt’s extraordinary sojourn and living love letter towards the city was documented in the recently released The World Before Your Feet, directed by Jeremy Workman and executive produced by acclaimed actor Jesse Eisenberg. The film follows Matt as he walks just to walk. Not for a cause, not to break a record; he is in it to explore, learn and connect. Although he is the main subject and is in virtually every scene, Matt suggests that the movie is really not about him, but of him learning and sharing things about the true main character: NYC. “I am curious about this place and find it fascinating to research the things that capture my attention.” Some such subjects are the phenomena of “churchagogues” (synagogues that have become churches), barbershops that use the letter “z” in their signs (as in “cutz” or “kutz”) and informal 9/11 murals. Matt’s curiosity for urban exploration often places him in spaces far from the customary fast-paced New York existence. Though he felt the need to defend his unadorned lifestyle for years, the courage of his convictions has paid in dividends. His positive effects on people have resulted in numerous expressions of gratitude and inspiration. His story has inspired in audiences such a rare sense of connection that The World Before Your Feet holds the record for the second highest-grossing film in the Quad Cinema’s 40-year history. (The World Before Your Feet is now available on digital platforms including iTunes, Amazon Prime, Vudu, etc.) Matt Green and Jeremy Workman

I wanted to spend a million minutes exploring just one place: New York! THOROUGH-FAIR As a sort of ambassador of kindness, Matt’s wholesomeness has made him somewhat of a vigilante. “I have witnessed several hit-and-runs on my walks, and politely address these wrongdoings with those at fault.” When a large truck struck a parked car and kept on driving, he ran after the guy, spoke with him and wrote down his license plate. Matt saw a parking permit in the damaged vehicle and noticed it belonged to a fireman. Matt went to the fire station across the street to give them the information. A month later the fireman emailed Matt thanking him as they tracked down the hit-and-run driver who was then legally forced to pay for repairs. Matt Green exists in a city that is sometimes familiar to all New Yorkers but often foreign to even lifelong residents. His excursions have given him great meaning and true enjoyment, as he lives in the moment, remembers the past, and steadily moves forward. The grander implication of his actions, simply living a life that he is driven to live, brings forth a need in him and the possibilities within us. Matt will tell you that his New York story is a story bigger than him; he is a perpetually moving audience whose steps keep leading him onward. • MARCH 2019 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 93

TIME OUT WITH… IESTYN DAVIES By Bailey Beckett

ince his Broadway debut in 2017 as the singing voice of Farinelli in Mark Rylance’s acclaimed production Farinelli And The King, countertenor Iestyn Davies has been labeled a breakout star. The New York Times called him sublime and blissful all at once, one among many fawning reviews that helped the play achieve sold out shows through much of its run. But the truth is Davies has been a star on the stage for many years, hailed as one of the opera world’s most precious, angelic voices. The performer sat down with us to talk about his career, performances and his alternating views of New York City. Having performed on Broadway as well as the Metropolitan Opera, what do you like most about New York City? What I love about New York is also everything I don’t like about it, if that makes sense. There is so much food, choice, energy but it’s an inward-looking city that is self-consuming. Definitely a twosided coin of a place. But it feels like a place of optimism. Right down to the less fortunate—there is an optimism and resilience. It’s unpleasant at times but you feel anybody can make it good here if they want to and if luck is on their side. What was performing on Broadway like after years in opera houses? The actual number of shows, and demands this made on me as a singer, was like running a marathon, and I can’t think of a better way to compare it to singing in an opera. I’ve performed in an opera at Glyndebourne Festival Opera to the tune of 13 performances, which is considered a heavy load, and that was spread over five weeks! On Broadway, I took part in six per week for four months. I think I sang over 100 shows. The audience is very different, too. In pure terms, they are a theater and accustomed to plays and musicals. But looking back now, I think that was a small success of that play; it crossed over to people who would otherwise have never committed to an opera, and reminded me that essentially what I do is sing music with a story or an emotional message. In its simplest terms, I performed songs, and that is the same raw musical structure that anybody can identify with and understand. The other weird and wonderful thing about performing in a Broadway show is that your company of actors and musicians is all consumed by the day-to-day, week to week, month to month habitation of one single space. The community of coworkers such as backstage, box office and front of house people becomes your support network and family. It’s a great and rewarding feeling, which contrasts enormously with the life in an opera house, where the singer or performer often feels like a house guest, constantly asking where the bathrooms are and how to get to the stage door to leave! How do you maintain your voice after performing six nights a week for 4 months? In addition to the health routine I developed, I worked very hard at not trying to produce something magical all of a sudden, which you can do when you’ve had days of rest between operas or concerts. Instead, I had to be very monk-like and follow an almost religious path of ablutions, vocally speaking. I kept my warming up routine to the minimum necessary for the show and tried not to sing anything until each afternoon to give myself recovery time after performances.

Farinelli And The King

Like athletes, when we use our vocal muscles, at least half of the preparation for a future performance is in the recovery from the previous one. Without recovery, you are singing on tired vocal cords. Inevitably, after weeks of dayto-day performing, the chords and vocal muscles accumulate tiredness, but the pay-off is that they also acquire a resilience. What is your favorite opera to perform? It’s a difficult thing to nominate a favorite opera to perform because there is the music and then there is the dramatic side of things, which can often be deadened for you by a limp production. But I’ve had enjoyable times performing Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as the character Oberon, a role written specifically for a countertenor which holds a special place in the canon for all countertenors. My most memorable experiences performing in operas have been when the cast gels and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, Where do you get your confidence to perform on stage? The older I get, the more often nerves surprise me in a way they never used to. In the Tom Volf documentary Maria by Callas the legendary opera singer said that when you are young you do things that are instinctive, and when you grow older that ebbs away. I suppose, in going through life, we learn from experiences which goes hand in hand with making us more aware as human beings, more able to predict circumstances ahead. When did you discover you had your voice/talent? Twice in my life my voice was discovered. The first time was really all down to nurture. My parents sent me to be a chorister in the Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge where we sang the daily service of Evensong for the eight weeks of University term. By the time I was 13, I had learned to sing in a way that worked well, and I was able to be expressive. Once my voice broke, I lost that vehicle for musical and emotional expression, so then it was a discovery that had to find my countertenor voice. I didn’t plan to be a countertenor; I just flipped my voice into falsetto one very boring afternoon in a school chamber choir. The person next to me thought my falsetto range sounded good, and I took him at his word and explored it. Looking back, I remember it feeling like another door had been opened.

What advice do you give to young singers who are just beginning? My piece of advice is twofold. First, singers are by their very nature unique. It’s important to remember that without feeling egotistical about how it might sound. No matter how much training and guidance you have that falls in line with your colleagues, your very DNA and hence physical make up will dictate a sound to your voice independently recognizable to that of anybody else. After that there is a whole host of other factors that will complicate life and you can’t always be in control of these. But, remembering you are you and not in competition with anybody but yourself is a good starting point.

Secondly, but possibly more importantly, have a sense of humor. It’s always a good piece of advice, as there is no joy to a singer’s performance who appears to be weighed down with the duress of the act of making music. A colleague of mine rather glibly said in the end it’s just dressing up and singing songs in a room. How do you relax? I enjoy cooking and good wine, and I’m obsessed with good coffee—making it properly and drinking it. I studied archaeology at University, so I have a penchant for antiquities, and in particular historic architecture. I’m a supporter of Liverpool FC so that takes up the odd afternoon in front of the television (don’t get me started on how difficult it is to actually get a ticket to a game—it’s much more elitist than opera!). I’m also constantly on the brink of getting a dog. I think the one thing in the entire world that takes me from stress level 100 to chill level 0 is the presence of a dog in a room… they are disarmingly magical in that sense. Labrador, please. Lastly, tell us your life motto? I suppose I always do try and look on the bright side of everything. It’s never worth getting angry about something (maybe for a short while) but better to push that aside. I know people think the English bottle things up, but time is a great healer and if you do put something under the carpet you’ll often find the payoff is many more days of joy compared with a few days pushing the vacuum reluctantly under the carpet.
