George Brescia: Broadway’s Speed Dial Stylist By John Burke Photography by Getty Images

e honest! …What could possibly be better than spending a balmy Summer day at a photo-shoot with five beautiful Broadway dancers overlooking the Fifth Avenue skyline? It was makesome-magic-time with an entire crew of technical assistants, interns, waiters, make-up ‘n’ hair folks, agents, managers, and guys to move furniture, potted trees, and lighting equipment!...oh yes, and of course those five gorgeous gals!… all of it orchestrated by a guy who does this stuff everyday for a living! George Brescia, fashion stylist to the stars, red carpet commentator, and author of the Simon & Schuster book “Change Your Clothes, Change Your Life!...because you can’t go naked” called on his “Stroman Girls” to model one of this Summer’s hottest fashion trends, “White! White! White!”

JULY 2016 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 15

George’s clients include Oscar, Emmy, and Tony winners, society folks, Wall Street guys, and soccer moms, but for this shoot he wanted legs-for-days and zillion kilowatt smiles, so it was a few text messages to his gal pals, Leah Hofmann, Angie Schworer, Beth Nicely, Mackenzie Warren, Lara Seibert Young and guess what?... All systems were GO! The location was the stunning rooftop terraces of Salon De Ning high atop the Peninsula Hotel. Photographer Jenny Anderson was booked! Known for her extensive work with Broadway celebrities on both Broadway.com and the Broadway Style Guide, she was a master with just-the-right-lighting, even as the sun and the clouds played hide ‘n’ seek and drove the make-up and hair folks mad! But George kept the whole thing as light and airy as the terrace where everything was assembled. His whole approach was to get the right balance of fun and fabulousness into the fashion, and his handpicked team didn’t disappoint! During a short break, we asked him, how did he get to be the go-to-guy for so many celebrities who are looking for just the right look for a Broadway premiere, a red carpet interview, a press junket, or perhaps even a stroll up onstage to grab a Tony Award, and his story is a kid-who-made-good fantasy…. (With a lot of talent and hard work added in, of course!) “I came from a big family, and I had always been my family’s song and dance man, starting when I was four or five! My grandmother especially encouraged me to tell stories and sing for her friends, the next-door neighbors, even people on the city bus when she would take me shopping. I loved entertaining! Making folks smile! …and, of course, getting applause! I could see from the start that I could make people feel happy with my performing, and that I could actually change the energy in a room by doing what I loved. As I grew up, I was in school plays and then on to college, and I had a lot of success with my singing and dancing, training constantly. But I needed a job, and I was always drawn to fashion and the beauty of clothes, mostly from my Mom’s influence and her great taste. She insisted that my brother and I always be dressed perfectly even at a young age, and she had her own career in fashion at her own clothing store, The Glass Door in Connecticut. Everything that I first learned about style and fashion came from her. My Mom’s love and influence sits on my right shoulder everyday, and I am so grateful and honored that she’s mine.” It was easy for George to get jobs during Summer vacations at stores around Hartford…”I was 18 and started as a promotional model featuring men’s fragrances…then, after graduating from college, I went directly to Ralph Lauren in sales… and I sold everything! After a few years working my way up through the ranks at the Ralph Lauren Mansion on Madison Avenue, I was put in charge of special events and merchandising Women’s product in all the Polo stores nationwide.” 16 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

THE LEADING LADIES Leah Hofmann: St. Louis, Missouri, an actor, dancer, singer, puppeteer, and model. Currently in “Something Rotten!” and a former Rockette! As a frequent model for George on his television segments, she is also one of his clients! “One of my favorite New York moments included attending the Metropolitan Opera’s Opening Night gala for THE MERRY WIDOW, for which George had picked out a gorgeous oneshoulder, red gown by Rolando Santana. During the evening, the famous society photographer Bill Cunningham snapped my picture and told me I looked like a “long stem red rose.” The picture appeared in the Sunday NY Times. Bucket List, check! Thank You, George. I concur with George’s ideals that what you wear tells a story, and whether you’re choosing an outfit for lunch with a friend or an opening gala, you must feel confident, unique and true to yourself. Because let’s face it, confidence is the most important accessory of all.” (White fitted dress with lace inset and shoes from Bar III available at Macy’s. Jewelry from Purdy Girl, 471 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10024) Mackenzie Warren: From South Carolina, she’s appeared in PIPPIN and ANYTHING GOES!… “I met George through Leah last year, and immediately adored him! He has a gift for making you feel safe, and feminine, and strong. He has a great eye for texture combinations that I wouldn’t normally think of….and I’m so thankful for his affirmation of me to be me!!” (White ruffled cold-shoulder blouse by Marled at Reunited Clothing and shoes by INC, both available at Macy’s. JUSTBLACK Jeans with frayed bottoms and jewelry from Purdy Girl). Angie Schworer: Originally from Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky, Angie has been on Broadway for 25 years and played the sexy bombshell Ulla opposite Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane in the megahit THE PRODUCERS. She is currently in SOMETHING ROTTEN, her 10th Broadway show! “George collaborates with you on every aspect of your styling. He allows you to wear what feels good on you, but always makes sure it’s on point with the current trends!” (Lace sleeveless dress and jewelry from Purdy Girl. Shoes by INC at Macy’s). Beth Nicely: A former Rockette, Beth’s Broadway credits include YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, SPAMALOT, and BULLETS OVER BROADWAY. She is currently appearing in SOMETHING ROTTEN. “I love working with George because he really focused on making me look and feel good, which is important! If you don’t feel good, you won’t look good, no matter what you’re wearing. He also picks things I would never have thought to wear but end up LOVING!!” (Off the shoulder dress by Flying Tomato and jewelry both from Purdy Girl. Shoes by INC available at Macy’s.) Lara Seibert Young: From Dallas, Texas, Lara appeared in the Broadway hit CHICAGO, playing “Velma Kelly”. Other Broadway credits: BIG FISH and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. “I first met George during BIG FISH, doing a number of morning show fashion segments, and we hit it off right away. What stands out about George’s styling is that he never pushes a specific style on me. He always asks first if I am comfortable and if I feel beautiful in what I’m wearing. If not, he’s back to the rack to find something else. The confidence that an outfit brings is the main thing he’s after. And every client has their own specific staple. And you’ll be laughing through the whole session. He has the gift to make anyone feel instantly at ease.” (Long maxi-dress by KAS and jewelry available at Purdy Girl. Shoes by INC at Macy’s).

JULY 2016 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 17

18 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

George was promoted to travel the country doing “trunk shows” where he spoke and did presentations in front of hundreds of different customers each week, coast to coast, and then regular in-store seminars motivating and educating the sales teams on the new seasons’ products. Every time he returned to NY, he would be called to do promotional videos to be distributed to the stores. He got regular exposure to every branch of the business, all the big names both within the company and among their exclusive clientele, and to Ralph Lauren himself, and it influenced and enlarged his perspective on what fashion means and what it can actually accomplish in transforming a person’s outlook on the world and how they function in it. The so-called “rag trade” had much more heft to it than met the eye, and the giants in the industry; Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Geoffrey Beene, Oscar de la Renta, and the commentators, Diana Vreeland, Carey Donovan, Grace Mirabella, Anna Wintour knew it! The hackneyed cliché for years had been “Clothes Make The Man!”…but what if it was actually, somehow, true?? “When I look back on my time at Polo, I realize how lucky I was to have seen so many different approaches to clothing and how all the different parts of the industry work within all the various segments of society; luxury goods, ready-to-wear, couture collections, aspirational and so-called “bridge-lines”, children’s fashion and juniors, missies, and men’s wear. And of course, I was performing in front of people and cameras constantly. Everything I do now, I learned the basics of at Polo.” George’s biggest break came about in 2010, when red carpet events began to take on a life of their own both in television and in the press. Magazines had been featuring red carpet spreads on celebrities as they arrived at the great award presentations, but those pages were tucked into the back with a jumble of thumbnails and ten-word captions and credits! It all escalated when the red carpet was used on television as both a fashion runway and an interview-op. The public began to really connect to the chance to see and hear everything from the stars before they walked into the “Big Event”…. And they ate it up! ….both “the hits” and “the misses”! It was only logical that an iconic comedienne and raconteur like Joan Rivers would hit it big with the premiere of “Fashion Police” on the E! Network in September 2010. She and her panel of fellow wits would lavish or lambaste the icons of entertainment both for what they said and what they wore! Tripping on a hem, stumbling on a step, or wearing the wrong shade of green in the wrong size could make front-page news! Within a short time, some red carpet broadcasts got ratings as high as the award shows following them!... and the advertisers and fashion industry titans paid close attention! “Folks I worked with always called me a ‘personality’. Since I was known for doing speaking engagements, public appearances, trunk shows, and motivational seminars, my transition was easy. I began to appear on TV on NBC’s NY Live, on CBS’s “On The Couch”, on FOX’s “Good Day New York!”, as well as on the networks’ evening news shows for special fashion segments and commentaries. I became the NY 1 style commentator both for the big Fashion Weeks at Bryant Park and at the Tony Awards red carpet events. I was approached by Stage 17, an online digital-media company affiliated with Broadway producers that created webisodes for subscribers. It was the new broadcasting method done over the internet, and I was given the opportunity to create my own show, DRESS UP!, a docu-series where I styled celebrities in their opening night looks for Broadway premieres, press junkets, and red carpet galas….and I became their on-air correspondent at every Broadway opening night and the Tony Awards. I’d be running from one couture showroom to another and then off to Verdura on Fifth Avenue to pick up a quarter of a million dollars’ worth of Art Deco jewels.” With all that

exposure, George’s styling career was on its way and the clients began to pour in; Tony winners like Victoria Clark, Shuler Hensley, and Lea Salonga; glamorous stars like Kate Baldwin, Marin Mazzie, Lauren Worsham, and Carolee Carmello. The men came too; Jonathan Groff, Bryce Pinkham, George Takei, Aaron Lazar, Jefferson Mays, Telly Leung. And the folks he interviewed on camera read like a who’s who of entertainment giants! Gloria Estefan, Debra Messing, Megan Hilty, Bernadette Peters, Sting, Dianne Wiest, Bryan Cranston, Crest Love, Fran Drescher, Kristin Chenoweth….the list goes on and on. George’s break-through in the publishing world was equally serendipitous… He managed through an accident to meet Jen Bergstrom, a publisher at Simon & Schuster, and right on the spot, he told her he’d like to write a book! She asked him what would it be. Without missing a beat, he said simply it would be a spiritual approach to dressing for your life… a sort of VogueMagazine-Meets-The-Secret….. He wanted people to know that clothes can serve as tools to enrich and expand their option, and that although our culture would like to think that appearance doesn’t matter, (and that people should only care about their “insides”, not their “exteriors”), the truth is that personally and professionally, people make up their minds by what they see of another person, (and it’s a great deal!)... within two minutes!!… and it can change the outcome of a job interview, an office conference, even a first date. George’s title said it all; “Change Your Clothes! Change Your Life”…and the subtitle; “...because you can’t go naked!”. We are forced societally to wear clothes, and they may as well serve us. Let your clothes tell the world what you want to say about yourself. Let your clothes truly reflect your interior… your dreams, your aspirations, your goals, and your intentions. Dressing unconsciously need not be an option anymore, and it doesn’t have to be intimidating, depressing, or expensive. George thinks of fashion as another form of entertainment…and enlightenment!! George’s schedule has gotten crazy-exciting with multiple appearances on NBC’s TODAY Show opposite Matt Lauer, Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb. He has appeared regularly as a style expert on HSN’s THE LIST with Colleen Lopez, and travels the country doing in-store appearances and fashion segments on regional television including Los Angeles’ KTLA. He now numbers his clients from all over the country, and he’ll soon be announcing exciting new ventures for the Fall, including projects on television, internet, and radio. [George Brescia is currently a regular contributor to Playbill.com with his Red Carpet Best Dressed column, and he can be found on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and on his website, GeorgeBrescia.com] (George Brescia’s clothes by INC available at Macy’s). • LOCATION The Peninsula New York Salon De Ning Rooftop Bar & Terrace (www.newyork.peninsula.com) PHOTOGRAPHY Getty Images (www.gettyimages.com) HAIR Dion Moore and Lois Broderick for Angelo David Salon (www.angelodavid.com) | T3 Micro MAKEUP Virginia Martin for Angelo David Salon (www.angelodavid.com) | Smashbox Cosmetics | JP Ramirez for Angelo David Salon | Giorgio Armani Beauty/ Bloomingdales SOHO NAILS Mariana Kryekurti for Angelo David Salon (www.angelodavid.com) | Morgan Taylor Lacquer

Sunnies In The New York City Forecast By Dianne Zoppa e should whisper a quiet little “thank you” when we pop on our sunglasses. Yes, they are a “must have” essential that first and foremost protect our precious eyes. But we know that our love affair with sunglasses will never end because, whether we have gained that dreaded five pounds, or are having a bad hair day, sunglasses always make us look absolutely fabulous. Nowhere else is this more apparent than in New York City, the fashion mecca where sunnies are out and about year round, showcasing their eye catching splash of color and adding polish to every outfit with a certain panache. As with all fashion, sunglasses shift towards what are the most coveted looks. Individualism ranks at the top of what influences our choices, but it’s freshness and the endless trove of design elements that create trends. New York Lifestyles Magazine spoke with Jade Hutton, an optician and fourth generation eyewear expert. She is Chief Creative Officer 22 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

at Colors In Optics, ltd. in New York City, makers of handmade, uptrend luxury eyewear. Jade identifies 2016’s sunglass trends first and foremost as a “balance between timeless retro styling with fresh updates, contemporary design and a glamorous flair.” “Our customers have a cosmopolitan style. They’re individualists, and very selective, leaning toward either classic looks with a modern twist – perhaps an oversized retro round expressed in an unexpected hue, or a traditional tortoise paired with eye catching mirror lenses. Or, there are those who want ‘fresh off the runway’ – this year, that’s an oversized aviator or a flattering, chic brow-bar design. Above all, we find that the infusion of color continues to fascinate the aficionado of sunglasses.” For fashionistas seeking their very own look, Jade takes us through the key sunglass trends for Summer 2016 as she interprets them in the latest Colors in Optics collection.

Brow Bar From a cosmetic perspective, brows have been in the focus of all beauty mavens this season. But for Summer 2016, all attention shifts to the Brow Bar, like Daytona, a sunglass design with techy detail that commands attention with sophisticated architecturallike top bar creating the sleekest, uptrend sunnies.

Oversized Aviators This gorgeous design belongs in the Trend Hall of Fame – it never fails to looks wonderfully sexy on everyone and lends itself to creative interpretation. This unisex Aviator, Sheriff, flies high in a royally rich purple mirror lens set in a silver tone frame. It is available at Bergdorf Goodman Oversized Glam, Sparkle “Big” ruled the runways, as did glamour and these sunnies from Colors in Optics, ltd. marry the two. Named Jackie as an homage to NYC’s beloved style icon, oversized lenses are captured in either pink crystal frames embedded with lightreflecting stardust or a soft, romantic blue fade with hombre toned lenses – another hot trend.

Round A design that defies time, the Round look is dominant again for Summer ’16. Its clean, studious yet sexy look invites creative touches, like this version with another leading trend detail, the brow bar – two for one! Here, a unisex Round, named Bowie in honor of one of NYC’s most revered artists, shows how color, in this case a sweet rose gold, elevates a look. Its mate is in powerplayer matte black paired with salt & pepper tortoise.

Modern Vintage Classic shapes, especially rounds and squares, take a time trip into Summer ’16, executed in unique tortoises, unexpectedly paired with hip mirror lenses in vibrant colorways, like the striking emerald green mirrors and oatmeal tortoise shown here in the Bond design, a modernized oversized version. For more conservative wearers, classic rich brown toned tortoise and sophisticated black remain perennial favorites.

Colors in Optics sunglasses range from $185 - $350. For more information call 1-866-393-3374. •

FLOTUS Always Gets Noticed: Fashionable Impressions by America’s First Ladies

By Miki Makrillos

Hollywood is notoriously for scrutiny put on Actors and Actresses during the red carpet appearances, and fashion style do’s and dont’s. However, fashion takes another dimension and yet an even more important place when we look at history’s most-discussed, bestdressed list, such as that of the First Lady Of The United States (or “FLOTUS” in political-speak) over the course of our nation’s history. First Ladies and their unique style statements convey fashion trends to not only our nation, but make a worldwide imprint on fashion statements. Historically some White House style statements have generated controversy. Martha Washington was known for her “queen’s nightcap”, while Dolley Madison had wacky turbans with peacock feathers in them, where her goal was to evoke European trends 24 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

with detail. Mary Todd Lincoln is remembered for her endless yards of costly fabric, giant hoop skirts and rosette filled gowns. First Lady Francis Cleveland, was known as the “It Girl” with her statement hair worn in a low knot on the back of her shaved neck, a style that became known as “La Cleveland”, and was accepted as a national style icon. The “mood” of First Lady fashion changed with Grace Coolidge’s nickname “Sunshine” which came from her brightly colored flapper dresses, cloche hats and sparkled belts that appeared in the women’s pages of newspapers. Mamie Eisenhower’s favorite color, “Pink” set the tone within the White House decor. She was the representation of the 50’s housewife. Her style of wasp-waisted dresses, matching handbags, shoes and hats set the tone during her tenure as First Lady. The Diva of First Lady fashion was captured by Jackie Kennedy.

Her love of rich fabrics and feminine monochromatic colors set in simple sleeveless dresses, coats, and power statement scarves, captivated American Women. Lady Bird Johnson gave her gowns a new elegance pairing them with white gloves, and bringing a modern look with a luxe fur stole, which has been a standing evening fashion statement since.

feminine yet fashionable look to her fashion trend. Her choice in Peter Soronen evening gowns, floral print dresses and “showing your best feature” open shoulder looks have empowered women to accept themselves and embrace their strongest physical assets.

Patricia Nixon followed her evening style statement of an embellished jacket giving a sleek and unexpected look for a formal affair. First Lady Betty Ford’s signature white bag was as stylish then as it is now. Hollywood “magic” influenced Nancy Reagan’s style, known for her always camera ready signature color - “Nancy Red”. Her formal gowns by designer Galanos left an imprint of her elegance. Modern, minimalist lines seen in First Lady Hillary Clinton’s use of a bold, color saturated coat makes a power statement. Currently First Lady Michelle Obama brings a more

Fashion will always leave an important, impressionable statement in conveying the mood and trends of its time. First Ladies have set the stage throughout these times to be the “ fashionable models” of example on both a national and worldwide catwalk. • About Miki Makrillos Miki Makrillos is a commentator on style and fashion on her website: wonderwomantalks.com JULY 2016 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 25

Sizzling Saratoga Springs

By Lyle Seltzer

ocated just over a three hour drive from New York City is the historic town of Saratoga Springs. In early times Saratoga was a site of legend to native Americans who revered the healing powers of its mineral springs – one of the few naturally carbonated springs in the United States. The site of key battles during the Revolutionary War, Saratoga Springs emerged in the 19th Century as a town at a confluence of health and society - the spas earned the town the moniker of “The Queen of Spas”. As the industrial revolution proceeded apace Saratoga became a place for the well-to-do to escape the pollution and heat of New York City and enjoy the restorative waters, the fresh mountain air and, with time at hand, gambling. Saratoga is known for its horse racing but there are plenty of other activities including the arts, festivals, shopping, outdoor sports, dining and family attractions. The inaugural Saratoga Uncorked, a five day food and wine experience taking place July 20-24 is a major kickoff event in the city. The multi-day celebration of fine wine, gourmet cuisine and wellness and entertainment will kick off the racing season and both visitors and locals will be able to experience the best that Saratoga has to offer. The event will feature hundreds of artisans, including renowned chefs, sommeliers, vintners, brewers, distillers and local producers. The historic Saratoga Race Course will host World-class 32 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

Thoroughbred racing for a 40 day meet beginning Friday. July 22nd through Labor Day September 5th..The meet will feature 18 grade 1 stakes races, Breeders’ Cup Challenge races, multiple graded stakes races, Family Mondays and special events. The highlight of the summer will be on Saturday, August 27th with the 147th running of the oldest stakes race in the country, the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes. The race meet will conclude with the Final Stretch Festival, September 3rd-4th with live music downtown on both nights.

Saratoga doesn’t just have thoroughbreds. More equine traditions continue with Saratoga Polo’s 2016 season showcasing Winston Churchill’s “sport of Emperors” July 8th through September 4th on Fridays & Sundays. Additionally, visitors can enjoy and celebrate 75 years of live harness racing on a beautiful half-mile track at the Saratoga Casino and Raceway alongside 1,700 gaming machines, the Vapor nightclub and dining options including casual dining at Lucky Joe’s and an upscale Fortune’s Restaurant which overlooks the live harness racing. The Saratoga Casino Hotel is a new 120,000 square foot, 100 room and suite hotel property offering the ideal location. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) commemorates their 50th anniversary in 2016. Audiences experience worldclass artistry while enjoying the beauty of nature from an acoustically superior open-air amphitheater and a lush, sloping lawn known for its optimal visibility. SPAC’S 5,200 capacity amphitheater was voted USA Today’s 2015 “Best Music Venue”.The New York City Ballet will take the stage for ten days from July 20th - 30th for their summer residency in Saratoga and Spac’s New York City Golden Anniversary Gala

will take place July 23rd at 8pm. Classical performances from the Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the preeminent orchestras in the world, will return to Saratoga from August 3rd – 20th, highlighted by the SPAC debut of Renée Fleming, Sarah Chang, Yannick & André Watts. SPAC will also be host to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Opera Saratoga, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (Aug 7 - 23) and several major music pop and rock concerts all summer long. Saratoga is also rich in unique high quality golf courses, including the award winning Saratoga National Golf Club. Named one of the Top 100 public courses in America by Golf Digest, it is one of fourteen courses to tee off at in the area. Accommodation options in Saratoga are widely available. There are a variety of hotels for all budgets. One of the more unique hotels is the Gideon Putnam, located in over 2,000 acres of Saratoga Spa State Park. Celebrating over 80 years since its foundation the Gideon Putnam was built atop an ancient spring long regarded as special for its mineral powers. Other hotels in the area include The Pavillion Grand Hotel, The Batcheller Mansion Inn, The Inn at Saratoga as well as a number of chain hotels.

Saratoga Springs boasts a wide range of cuisines from gluten free to farm-to-table to fine dining. At the heart of the town at confluence of Union and Nelson Avenue is The Brook Tavern – close to the Saratoga Race Course offering a wide menu and excellent ambiance. Chez Pierre delivers the French cuisine experience whilst the Lake Ridge restaurant produces continental cuisine in a classical dining setting which guests are sure to remember. Bedazzled in Vegas: The Wynn and Wynn Encore By Norah Bradford

the Mirage, Treasure Island, and the Bellagio.

he Wynn Las Vegas, a sixty four acre resort in Las Vegas, is known for luxury and distinctiveness in all the small details that make guests’ stays memorable. It is among the world’s most luxurious resorts, built on the site of the Desert Inn (where Liberace, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Cher, Barry Manilow and many other major stars of the last half century performed), this 2.7 billion dollar resort was constructed next to the Palazzo and the Venetian Hotel. The Wynn hotel’s fortytwo floors contain an astounding two thousand seven hundred sixteen rooms. The Wynn and adjacent Wynn Resort Encore combined have a total of 4,750 rooms.

Renowned publications and travel industry insiders have been quick to take note of everything the Wynn and the Encore have to offer. Wynn and Encore hold more Forbes Travel Guide Five Star awards than any other independent hotel company in the world today. The Tower Suites at both Wynn and Encore, and The Spas at Wynn and Encore received the Forbes Five-Star Award.

Industry insider Steve Wynn built both the Wynn and the Wynn Encore and played a key role in the 1990s resurgence of the Las Vegas Strip. His companies refurbished or built many of the most celebrated resorts in Las Vegas, including the Golden Nugget, 36 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

Wynn offers an array of incredible dining options. Whether you’re looking for fine dining, bars and lounges, casual dining, or even vegan dining, Wynn offers something amazing for everyone. Nine fine dining restaurants, nine casual dining restaurants, plus eleven bars and lounges provide a tasty variety of choices. Amongst those, Wing Lei, the haute Chinese restaurant at the Wynn Las Vegas, is the only Chinese restaurant in North America to have ever received the distinction of a Michelin star.

With its century-old pomegranate trees, and two private rooms, Wing Lei, embodies luxury and elegance. Designer Roger Thomas has created a restaurant interior with a unique ambience that exquisitely complements executive chef Xian Ming Yu’s creations. Known as one of Las Vegas’s most upscale and innovative restaurants, Wing Lei is a must-visit location for any visitor to Vegas and especially for hard-core foodies. Two tasting menus are available at Wing Lei, and a Peking duck dinner is also available. Executive chef Ming Yu creates cuisine that is at once surprising and familiar, like dinner entrée wok-fried duck in black bean sauce. Alaskan King Crab Salad is another crowd-pleaser: with misoyuzu dressing, mango, and avocado, it’s a gastronomic experience guests won’t soon forget. Other menu gems include Sichuan chili prawns, walnut prawns, wok-tossed scallops and wok-fried Maine lobster. Wing Lei’s sweet & sour pork, Mapo tofu, Cantonese chow mein, hand-pulled wok-tossed noodles, and Yang Chow fried rice are delicious as well. The shows offered at Wynn and Encore are legendary. Le Rêve – The Dream, voted Best Production Show in Las Vegas by the Southern Nevada Hotel Concierge Association for no less than six years in a row, will mesmerize you with its unique romantic take on water ballet. Le Rêve – The Dream is among the most exciting shows in Las Vegas. Divers, acrobats, ballroom dancers, and synchronized swimmers perform an awe-inspiring piece in a 1.1 million gallon pool. The unique venue design means that every seat in the house has a complete view of the waters, and the show combines elements of romance, action, and fantasy to bring guests an experience unlike any other. Inspired by a 1932 painting of the same name by Pablo Picasso, Le Rêve is a colorful and abstract performance created by former Cirque du Soleil producer Franco Dragone. Synchronized swimmers glide through the water in beautiful patterns as aerialists soar through the air. Massive nets rise out of the water and performers take picture-perfect dives from them into the pool below. High divers perform breathtaking in-air acrobatic sequences as they descent towards the water. Behind the scenes, sixteen scuba divers participate in each performance, using fourteen air tanks and one thousand one hundred and twenty cubic feet of compressed air. Safety is paramount- every member of the cast is scuba certified. The ring of digital screens that are suspended from the ceiling project effects like falling rain and flying birds. With no seat more than twelve rows away from the stage, every guest is sure to have an unforgettable experience at Le Rêve - The Dream. The Lake of Dreams features nine different mesmerizing shows. Wynn and Encore also both offer unforgettable nightlife

experiences. Nightlife venues XS, Surrender, Intrigue and Encore Beach Club, are some of Las Vegas’ most celebrated places to party. World-renowned DJs like David Guetta and Avicii spin frequently there, enthralling club guests. Guests have included Olympian Michael Phelps, singer Ne-Yo, Jenny McCarthy, and even Britain’s Prince Harry. The shops, spas, salons, fitness centers, pools, and golf facilities at Wynn and Encore are extraordinary. With many distinctive shops, the Esplanades at Wynn and Encore put the world’s most renowned designers within convenient reach. From Chloe to two Chanel boutiques to Louis Vuitton, incredible shopping awaits Esplanades visitors. Ready to relax and rejuvenate, Vegas-style? Head to the Spa at Encore, designed by Todd-Avery Lenahan of TAL Studio. Whatever your relaxation style, Wynn and Encore offer dazzling opportunities to do what you like most. At Zen amidst the Vines: Allegretto Vineyard Resort By Ayres By Karen Feld

oug Ayres is one of those talented people who can make something magical of what he calls “an inspired space.” That’s Allegretto, where Ayres transformed 20 acres of pastureland into a new luxury resort and spa in the heart of central California Paso Robles wine country in San Luis Obispo County. This resort is appropriately named, Allegretto, a musical term describing a moderate tempo and is located midway between Los Angeles & San Francisco and well worth a visit. It offers a break any time of year from the congestion and hectic New York City-style pace. It is also only a 20 minute drive inland from the Pacific Ocean. Ayres, whose family developed much of Los Angeles, relates architecture to musical notes and chords. “Each component is part of the symphony,” says Ayres, who was in the film and sound business before joining the family business, Ayres Hotels. “I hear that silent symphony throughout the property. It’s a composition that has to make sense to the listener.” Ayres feels it in all of his 38 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

senses, and that’s communicated to resort guests. Hence, the name “Allegretto.” He brings all the elements together in true harmony with nature – the art, design, comfort level, landscape, spa, and artfully prepared farm to table food. The place surpasses his goal of reflecting the spirit of the earth. “I feel like I’m a steward of the celestial bodies of the earth,” Ayres said. “I fell in love with the area. My eyes were having a visual orgasm.” Eight acres of vines at this romantic Tuscan styled resort produce Cabernet, Malbec, Tenat and Voigneir, but only for local consumption at this time. European inspired ground floor guest rooms with high ceilings open up to a terrace laced with olive vines and landscaped open spaces where you can comfortably relax by open fire pits in the large courtyard. It’s not unusual to see the humble Ayres personally tending to the vines, tinkering in the herb or flower gardens, or anonymously helping guests with their luggage. He wants guests to share his passion for the property not just visually but “in the airwaves.”

Alternatively, roam the magnificent property through the hand set stoned archways reminiscent of European monasteries, visit the Abbey, the French inspired non-denominational wedding chapel, stroll leisurely through the Romeo and Juliet Tunnel (it’s sized to accommodate a horse and rider), fountains, manicured gardens and engage with Ayres’ hand-picked art and artifact collection, such as the huge Siddhartha statue from India. The museum quality art is carefully and personally curated from Ayres’ worldwide travels to fit the space. Violins are uniquely painted on elevator doors keeping with the concept of the guests’ senses coming alive. All elements of Allegretto are brought together from the ground up in complete harmony. Not only is the place spotlessly clean but a wrapper on the TV remote in each of the 171 guest rooms and suites notes a “microbefree handset.” Remotes, notoriously one of the germiest areas of hotel rooms, are disinfected before each guest arrives. No detail is left unnoticed at this family owned and operated business. I did not want to leave the property after a zen treatment at Spa Allegretto. Their approach is holistic and each treatment is customized. Ashley treated me to a spearmint beauty elixir as I relaxed on a heated table. The therapist used a cold pumpkin enzyme mask after a warm hammer for firming. Aromatherapy enhances relaxation and helps to detox the mind, body and soul. Signature treatments include the Triple Crown which is a facial including back and scalp, and Cabaletta, a four-handed body massage. Aroma blends created in house include an unwind blend of allspice, anise, cinnamon and patchouli; and an awakening blend of bergamot, sweet orange and ylang-ylang. In addition to their own blends, the spa uses Caudalie, a high end French line of bath products. After your treatment, be sure to relax in their zero gravity chairs and infra red detox sauna. Spend the afternoon enjoying the lap pool with private cabanas and relax in the whirlpool tub while gazing out at the vineyards above. Play bocce ball or experience Chara, an alternative to yoga.

An enormous cross-section log cut from a giant California Sequoia tree displayed off the lobby reminds us of the age and expanse of the world. It’s rings date back before the Great Wall of China and the birth of Christ. Don’t overlook Cello Ristorante & Bar, a casual Mediterraneaninspired restaurant on-property serving creatively inspired local foods, artisanal locally crafted beers, and Allegretto’s proprietary wines. The scallop salad is a lunch favorite. And sip a glass of Allegretto’s wine in a cozy seat at the fire pit before retiring. •

The huge bathroom features large wall mirrors, imported marble, double vanities, a supersized Jacuzzi tub, and a glass enclosed shower. Fine amenities such as plush towels, silky robes, slippers, and ESPA toiletries spell luxury and attention to detail. One of Acqualina’s major attractions is its private beach club on the Atlantic Ocean. It offers three oceanfront pools, white canvas cabanas, locker rooms, and “white glove” service. The grounds are meticulously landscaped with manicured green lawns, flowering bushes, and palm trees. Crimson-red umbrellas and cushions add a vibrant accent to the sun washed décor. Pick a shady spot

poolside or on the beach and, with an icy glass of lemon infused water in hand, relax and watch the Atlantic waves sweeping the sandy shoreline. If you need a refill, a fresh towel or suntan lotion, the pool butler is never too far. Guests looking for watersports action will find plenty of offerings from windsurfing to jet skying. Additional recreational activities include tennis privileges at the Turnberry Isle and the Diplomat resorts, golf at five courses within 15 miles from the resort, shopping at the Aventura Mall, and a plethora of museums and major tourist attractions. A complimentary limousine is also available to shuttle guests to most area highlights.

Highlights of the modern American menu include Salmon Carpaccio drizzled with olive oil and lemon, Ahi Tuna Tartare in a citron dressing, Mushroom Risotto infused with a touch of Black truffle oil, and their signature Chicken in Crosta, sauteed with lemon and wine in a Parmigiana crust.

Acqualina offers several dining venues where you can enjoy anything from a light sandwich to an elegant dinner.

For fine Italian dining treat yourself to Il Mulino, the famous New York restaurant, located right off the hotel’s lobby.

Start your day with their generous breakfast buffet, a lavish spread of hot and cold selections, freshly baked pastries, smoothies, fruit juices, and various themed dishes. On weekends, the spread also includes seafood, tuna with black sesame seeds, and filet mignon.

A stay at the resort would not be complete without some pampering at the Acqualina Spa by ESPA, an exquisite 20,000 square foot sanctuary on two floors, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The spa has recently installed a detoxifying Himalayan Salt Wall and has introduced new treatments such as the AMA releasing Abyhanga massage and Thai massages. This year, the Forbes Travel Guide awarded the spa a Five Star rating, an honor bestowed on only 47 spas in the world. This is the place to Indulge in a therapeutic massage or a rejuvenating facial.

For a gourmet dinner head to AQ, the hotel’s elegant restaurant. It is located in a large oval-shaped room with high ceilings,

The hallmark of the resort is its attentive and professional staff. They are friendly and eager to help answering guest requests with only one word: “Absolutely.” Life at the Acqualina is so alluring that two thirds of the towering building is occupied by residences, and two more buildings are under construction to accommodate the high demand. Art to “The Crossroads of the World”

By Victoria Ingalls

imes Square in New York City is regarded as one of the leading tourist attractions in the world today with estimates suggesting some 50 million visitors a year pass through. Each day some 450,000 pedestrians pass through this junction between Seventh Avenue and Broadway earning the area the nickname of “The Crossroads of the World”. Times Square was named after The New York Times newspaper moved there in 1904 and the event for which the Square is most well known is the New Years Eve party and the annual ball drop which attracts in excess of a million revellers on December 31st. The Times Square Alliance due to celebrate its 25th anniversary 46 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

next year was created to improve and promote Times Square. The Alliance is involved in a range of activities from making sure the Square is clean and tidy to promoting local businesses, encouraging economic development and generally championing the importance of Times Square as a commercial and social site of global significance. Aside from the neck-injury inducing vast neon advertisements adorning the tall buildings, hustle and bustle of people is the highly visible, but perhaps less wellknown public art program of the Times Square Alliance. The Arts program has since its inception attracted over 60 prominent and emerging artists to exhibit their work in this iconic location. The upside for the artist is overwhelmingly clear – some 310,000 daily visitors will see their work on display.

Among the more recent projects has been the Times Square Arts initiative to bring Saya Woolfalk’s short movie ChimaCloud to the electronic billboards in the Square for 3 minutes from 11:57 p.m. to midnight every night in June as part of The Midnight Moment exhibition. This project is a part of Midnight Moment, a monthly presentation by The Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts. Saya Woolfalk’s ChimaCloud transforms Times Square and its big screens into an imaginary transport hub to a utopian society where inhabitants adopt new behaviors, psychologies and physiologies. Combining both animation and live action, ChimaCloud is a series of short digital videos collected from Woolfalk’s ongoing multimedia project ChimaTEK. In the multi-year projects No Place, The Empathics and ChimaTEK, Woolfalk has created a kaleidoscopic world known as the Empathics, a fictional race of women who are able to alter their genetic make-up and fuse with plants. With each body of work, Woolfalk continues to build the narrative of these women’s lives, questioning the utopian possibilities of cultures mixing. At the Crossroads is another initiative using the bright Duffy Square Red Steps to introduce art to a public audience. A recent event was Jane Jacobs 100: Readings & Reflections from The Death & Life of Great American Cities. The public were invited to sit on

the stoop of the Duffy Square Steps, unfold a red chair on Snohetta’s pedestrian plazas, put on wireless headphones provided by the Times Square Alliance, and hear urbanists and city-lovers of all hues read and reflect on their favorite excerpts from Jacob’s classic text in real time – all as you watch the “intricate ballet,” ‘the seeming disorder” and the “marvelous order” of a great public space.

Second Homes for the Adventurous Few

By Neal Sroka

ne of life’s greatest pleasures is spending quality time with friends and family. Owning a vacation home is among the best ways to experience this. Many of the luxury resorts in exotic destinations such as the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and the Mediterranean now offer residences for purchase. For example, the most sought after of Douglas Elliman’s resort residences are typically part of a high end luxury community or hotel brand such as Aman, Rosewood, and Four Seasons to name a few. The main feature buyers look for when purchasing one of these residences is flight availability to the destination whether scheduled or infrastruture for private flights. Very often it takes less time to fly to a luxury destination in the Caribbean to enjoy the sun and sea than it takes to drive from New York City to your beach or country house. Now think where that time can take you to at one of these destinations. Mayakoba is one of the most successful developments in all of Mexico, located just outside of Playa del Carmen on the Yucatan Peninsula. Approximately 30min from the Cancun International Airport, is this 1,581-acre enclave of jungle and tropical mangroves bordering white sand beaches. This is also home to a world class golf course that hosts the only Mexican PGA event, the OHL Mayakoba Classic at the Greg Norman designed El Camaleon. Present offerings include three distinct home ownership opportunities from world-class hotels: fractional ownership at Fairmont Heritage Place, several three bedroom multilevel villas at Banyan Tree, and the highly coveted villas at Rosewood Mayakoba built along the serene canals that flow through the entire resort, and offer the utmost luxury and convenience in an idyllic setting. www.mayakobaresidences.com Situated on the sloping grounds of one of the most talked about resorts in the Caribbean, Four Seasons Nevis is now offering the Villas at Pinney’s Beach. Pinney’s Beach is an exclusive collection of 3-4 bedroom contemporary-designed homes with full and fractional ownership options. Owners enjoy the spoils of the Four Seasons Resort lifestyle with access to all of the resort facilities including the Robert Trent Jones II designed Golf Course, spa and hotel services along with a variety of restaurants and nightlife. www.fsrenevis.com Aman hotels have a reputation of being one of the world’s greatest travel experiences. The recently opened Amanera at Playa Grande is an extraordinary 800 acre exclusive destination situated along the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The intimate hotel offers a full suite of services to villa owners including a dedicated chef and villa personal attendant, world-class golf, spa and dining. They are currently offering 2 to 5 bedrooms villas along the ocean cliffs boasting panoramic vistas. www.aman.com • Neal Sroka is the founder of the Sroka Worldwide Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate specializing in resort real estate in the Caribbean and Latin America. 48 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

Hotel Indigo By Daniel J. Bollinger ast month saw the grand opening of the only duplex hotel room in the Hotel Indigo. Hotel Indigo is located at Ludlow Street on the Lower East Side. The Lower East Side is roughly located between the Bowery and the East River, and Canal Street and Houston Street and is a great neighborhood with its artsy scene, plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, and unique shopping experiences. For someone staying in NYC, the Hotel Indigo location is prime if you want to experience life in the Big Apple as a native “New Yawkur.” This hotel is Intercontinental Hotel Groups’ Flagship hotel. The hotel combines great rooms, the Mr. Purple rooftop bar and restaurant and their only duplex penthouse suite has some great features. Their two bedroom/three bath duplex penthouse suite is certainly designed well for the uses they are suggesting it for. Photo shoots, movie scenes, and bridal suite packages will all enjoy what is offered. For photo shoots and movie scenes you will be getting some of the best views of the surrounding skyline including Brooklyn and the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg Bridges. These views are protected by Hotel Indigo since the owners purchased all air rights surrounding 50 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

their building. The bridal suite package obviously includes these views but also offers champagne, make up chairs, rolling racks and more amenities specifically designed for your needs on that special day. Hotel Indigo’s design motif is an embodiment of the LES which is in effect an “artist theme” since the LES has been in its most recent history the place for artists, musicians, etc. They successfully achieved their goal with many design accents and artwork. They have Mr. Brainwash artwork located throughout the suite (who my sources and I personally are convinced is Banksy). You really should check out the phonograph and bicycle wheel chandelier in the living room. Other cute accents continue the theme: The cocktail shaker in the mini bar is a replica of a graffiti spray paint can, the do not disturb sign says “Open Gallery” on one side and “Work in Progress” for do not disturb, and my personal favorite is the dripping paint splash on the mirrors in the hallway. The duplex penthouse living room has a double high ceiling with a curved stair leading to the open master bedroom on the second floor. The other rooms in the hotel have high ceilings and are larger than the average hotel room in NYC being 330 sf as opposed to the average 200 sf NYC hotel room. The other rooms have big balconies which are great for enjoying the views, people watching, and relaxing with a bunch of your friends. What is

Top of the Block impressive are the luxury finishes in all the bathrooms. All of the bathrooms have cascading shower heads with handhelds. What sets the duplex penthouse bathroom apart is the deep soaking tub with tiled top and shelf for you to put your music player, handbills from the theatre, or any personal items you enjoy while bathing. The floor tiles also make the duplex bathroom unique. The funky/ artsy floor tiles really blend artsy and luxury nicely. I would call it ‘funky luxury’ which is appropriate for the new LES evolving now. There are mirrors galore in all the bathrooms and eastern sunlight reflects on the vanity in the master bathroom in the duplex suite so you will have plenty of light for shaving, applying makeup, etc. There are East and West facing viewing balconies in the duplex penthouse. The unit is on the South side of the building so all the bridges are viewable. I have never been closer to the Williamsburg Bridge. There are many iconic photo ops available so you and your bridesmaids, or crew, or photo team will surely have some great pictures to remember your time spent at the Hotel Indigo. The lobby is also very impressive. You are never too far from an outlet for charging your electronics. I like the one sofa where they have installed outlets right at the base of the couch. Along the columns you will find outlets right on the floor next to your chair. There is plenty of seating and every seat is comfortable. If you have some time to kill, or like to work around people then visit the

lobby of the hotel and sit anywhere you like. The lobby also has a Bar & Café which sells some locally sourced products including: Irving Farm Coffee, Liquiteria Juices, and Russ & Daughters bagels. Once again you can enjoy all the views with huge windows throughout. Intercontinental Hotel Groups’ Flagship hotel the Hotel Indigo really is “Top of the Block.” Not only is their only duplex penthouse suite a great stay, it is available for movie scenes, photography sessions, and they offer a special Bridal Suite Package. All of their rooms contain luxury amenities. The lobby is impressive and above the lobby make sure you enjoy at least one meal at Mr. Purple. You have all of this wrapped nicely in the heart of New Yorks’ Lower East Side (LES) which is a trendy, chic and very cool neighborhood. Would you like to experience how a native New Yorker enjoys this city? Stay at the Hotel Indigo and you will have a great New York experience. • Hotel Indigo 171 Ludlow Street New York, NY 10002 (212)237-1776 www.hotelindigolowereastside.com JULY 2016 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 51

Arlington Place B&B: The Authentic “Crooklyn” Experience

By Daniel J Bollinger Photos by Emily Gilbert

rlington Place Bed & Breakfast is located in Brooklyn at Arlington Place. It is a definitive “Crooklyn” experience because Spike Lee filmed a major portion of his 1994 movie Crooklyn in this very house. It has stayed true to its history by still having most of the original design details from that period in time intact, with the exception of one wall. If you are interested in experiencing what the current global vibe of Brooklyn being the most popular borough in the world right now - then Arlington Place B&B offers a very “toe in the water” experience of not only true Brooklyn, but BedStuy Brooklyn. Located in the eastern section of Bed Stuy close to transportation links and some great restaurants book a stay today and enjoy a few days in my own Beloved Brooklyn. 52 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JUNE 2016

Arlington Place was designed and built in approximately 1887 by the versatile Victorian architect George Pool Chappell, who was one of a dozen or so amazingly talented and prolific architects that defined the areas that are now referred to as “Brownstone Brooklyn”. Many of the homes he built are now landmarked or earmarked for such award, including 7 Arlington Place, which he built in the Renaissance Revival style. After the owners purchased this rare gem, they realized that they needed to respect its original details and restore it to its natural beauty. They have honored both the past and present, and have fused its spectacular bones with a soft modern, eco-friendly touch that the owners call “liberated Victorian.” The design details of this time are classic and represented so well at 7 Arlington Place. The wood that adorns this B&B from the staircase, the wainscoating, the mantles, to the pocket doors

is gorgeous. You cannot get wood like this anymore. Back in the 1800’s they felled trees anywhere from 30 to 300 years old. Our current timber production processes trees only after a few years. The detailing in this wood from the ogees to the corner leaf detail on the door trim is an example how “they don’t make things like they used to”. The brass hardware accompanying the doors with their intricate designs not only on the door plates but even the hinges is beautiful. The stained glass in the recessed bay windows, the original China Hutch, and the coffered ceilings create a time past atmosphere. The mantles are notable: original tiles with foxes, hunting dogs, and similar themes. The richness of the colors of the tiles and the ornate corner details of the hearth. On one mantle it reads, “The Canty Hearth where Cronies Meet”. It is a quote from the Scottish poet of that time Hew Ainslie. The rooms are cozy and each has a bathroom with period design elements as well. From the original clawfoot tubs to the border tiles if you’ve never experienced the rich detail of a Brooklyn Brownstone this is the place to do it. Since it is a Bed and Breakfast we do have some very modern features that fuse old and new together very well. The kitchen is an open layout leading to a beautiful backyard. The basement has been updated into a bar/ lounge but in keeping with the design. One wall was removed to open up the kitchen area but the wood from this wall was used in the custom design of the bar in the basement thereby matching in design and feel. The exposed original beams in both the kitchen and basement combined with the original brick structural arches in the basement make for a great blend of these new features and the original detailing. Arlington Place features many amenities as well including: a made to order organic breakfast, coffee, tea and juice, as well as a variety of pastries and fruits. They source some of the ingredients from

their very own rooftop garden and/or local establishments. There is a split system air conditioner so you can have your room as hot or cold as you wish. The Parlor and formal dining room is available for quiet sitting daily. Coffee, tea, water and snacks are always available. The owners sometimes host an afternoon event or piano performance for the guests’ entertainment. There is cable tv and free wi-fi in each bedroom and the house has a library with books for people of all ages including children. There are a number of restaurants in the immediate area as well. Some that I would recommend are Ali’s Trinidad Roti Shop ~ you’re in Bed-Stuy, historically a highly Caribbean neighborhood and Ali’s is a well known spot. Bedford Hall ~ a well preserved Prohibition era spot with live jazz during weekend brunch. Dough ~ Bed-Stuy donuts, don’t say I didn’t let you know. And only in NY: David’s Brisket House ~ a Jewish deli run by Muslims. Dynaco ~ they have a rotating pie and cake menu and it’s cash only. These are just a few of the great places in the area. Arlington Place can also be rented out for parties and events. The kitchen, backyard, and basement bar are all equally accessible with two staircases leading to each space. This layout makes for a great social gathering or event. You can learn all about what Arlington Place B&B offers here: arlingtonplacebnb.com/about Arlington Place is a piece of history spanning hundreds of years. A landmark worthy brownstone with most original detailing built over a hundred years ago. Spike Lee’s set for much of his movie Crooklyn filmed in 1994. And now you can experience all of this history too. For someone visiting NYC I would definitely rent a room for at least one or two nights here so you can say you lived the Brooklyn experience. Real Estate for All Seasons By Mark D. Friedman anhattan real estate is changing every day. By the time this article goes to print, the market will already have changed again. Each neighborhood has different moods, vibes and attributes and price per square foot changes building to building, even within the same location. Over the years, it has seen tremendous growth. High-end condos are being built everywhere; not much can stop the growth or gentrification and as Comedian Billy Crystal said in an interview recently on his latest visit to The Tonight Show upon seeing all the constant construction, “I’m looking forward to when they finish the city”. New construction has been booming thanks to the now defunct tax abatement called the 421-a and in recent months high-end closings have been on the rise from construction two years ago with foreign buyers signing contracts off floor plans. As reported in the NY Times, “In the two years since Mr. de Blasio, a Democrat, took office in January 2014, developers have received construction financing for 13,929 affordable units, according to data from the Department of Housing Preservation and Development. Of those, 5,006, or more than a third, were to receive a 421-a subsidy, a clear sign of how heavily the mayor’s overall program relied on the now-defunct exemption.” Even though the program has not been renewed, we won’t see the true effects of that for another year or two and it likely will not be pretty. Almost every brokerage has seen a jump in closings over the last year. Some like Halstead are up almost 25 percent; however, if you continue to look at the top of the market there are still inconsistencies. Even as I write this, emails are interrupting me from all different brokers about price points with “price improvements.” The luxury residential market has logged four strong weeks in a row, with 115 sales worth a combined $950 million, including a $76.5 million sale at Macklowe Properties’ 432 Park Avenue. Maybe the slowdown in the Manhattan luxury sales market is a bit of a fabrication ?No, it is not. Industry publication The Real Deal totaled it up, and the pessimists are right: Modern aristocrats’ appetite for en-suite lap pools, members-only pet spas and penthouse views of New Jersey really seems to be on the wane.

54 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

While we had a strong four weeks, luxury sales volume is down a stomach-churning 25 percent in the first 20 weeks of 2016 compared to the same period last year. Just 449 contracts at or above $4 million were signed so far this year, compared to 597 in the first 20 weeks of 2015, and 552 in 2014, according to a TRD analysis of data. Meanwhile the biggest growth of million dollar listings is actually in Brooklyn. According to TRD, Bedford-Stuyvesant, a neighborhood in the north central part of Brooklyn, moved from 1.7 percent of homes valued at $1 million or more in 2012 to 56.5 percent in 2016. That’s more than a 3,000 percent increase. Another Brooklyn neighborhood, Greenpoint, saw an increase from 8.4 percent in 2012 to 56.7 percent in 2016. So after reading all of this you may think it’s impossible to buy anything for less than a few million and why even try when all you read or see in the news are stories titled “the new Billionaires Row”. That’s what New York real estate experts have dubbed a lineup of a half-dozen new super luxury skyscrapers overlooking Central Park that are home to some of the world’s most expensive apartments. Topping it all and appearing next year in a high-rise being built on Central Park South: a 23,000-square-foot, four-story apartment offered at $250 million! Really! That jaw-dropping price was contained in documents the developer filed with the state attorney general’s office. Floor plans show 16 bedrooms, 17 bathrooms, five balconies and a massive terrace. However, it is not true that you must spend millions to find your new home, properties in Manhattan Valley all the way through Washington Heights and up to Inwood are being sold for under $1 million. Recently, my client and I were featured in The New York Times’ The Hunt for buying a great one bedroom for only $699,000 in Manhattan Valley. My team recently sold a two-bedroom apartment in Washington Heights with a doorman, roof deck and gym for $689,000. These neighborhoods are up-and-coming and still affordable. The most important way to achieve your goal is to work with a broker you trust and one who will prepare you to be the first buyer to the table with a professional offer. If you have any questions about the current market or you need an evaluation on your property please email me at the Friedman Rosenthal Team at Halstead Property through www.halstead.com •

Interiors: Luxe Tips to Make Your Outdoors Indoors By Nancy Pearson Summer is all about the outdoors! Whether you are sunning yourself in the Hamptons, enjoying city views in New York from your terrace or lucky enough to be relaxing in a leisurely country setting, now is the best time to refresh your outdoor space and make the most of summer. Start by adding a few summery accents, whether it is a multicolored throw pillow, a vibrant flower or flashy napkins. One of the best approaches when adding green colored accents is to use plants. Revive the yard or terrace with new flowers and furniture made from natural materials, like our amazing tree slice coffee table, which is still very on trend. It is great to be prepared for the heat and all the socializing that occurs al fresco during the months ahead. Although grey has been a hot color for the past few years, now is the time to lighten up. Keep the color pallet fresh with summer whites complimented by bright accents. On a Sag Harbor porch, I slip-covered all of the outdoor furniture in white Sunbrella, which is easily cleanable and washable. It gave new life to the outdoor space! Drama was added with airy billows of sheer white outdoor draperies. Next, I decided to play with color, texture and pattern in vibrant pinks, oranges and purples. Ikat designs and graphic fabrics with summer images gave the outdoor pillows style. They are a perfect way to accent and make a statement on a budget. Pick two colors and add a complimentary one to give your look extra punch, such as, blue, turquoise and magenta.

Gold accents are one of the big trends in decorating for 2016. In planning for outdoor entertaining, I paired a white dining table with slip covered chairs. The table top was given a new lease of life courtesy of the gorgeous melon and gold accented Limoges china. A garden stool is an absolute must in any outdoor seating area. A gold one is particularly glam and gave the porch an upscale feel. It contrasted the purple petunias, which are a rather common annual flower, and added unexpected element that is key to a successful design. Next, become a trend setter with a fashionable bar cart which not only is a great decorative statement, but is a highly functional element for serving ice cold libations on a hot day. For this project I used different textures to achieve a polished yet light look. I went with clear glassware with a lot of texture, silver metallic bar utensils, and to carry out the final look of the summer style, I decided to go with a bold melon colored tea set. Not only does the cart look stylish with the finishing touches, it also ends up being able to accommodate a day time happy hour and a cool summer night tea party. If you are working with limited space, don’t worry! There are plenty of ways to open it up using a few trusty décor pieces. My favorite way is to incorporate mirrors. They are a great way to expand a small space you are working with. Try going for a statement piece that will look great all year round. During day, a mirror will reflect the sun, filling your area with plenty of natural light. For a night time look, go with candles or mood lighting - the mirror will shine like the beautiful moonlight. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous with décor elements, try swapping out any silver or gold serving utensils or even the cart itself for a rose gold or copper finish on any metallic surface. It will create an interesting contrast between the furniture and the designated drinking area. Rose gold or copper silverware will make for an interesting conversation at the dinner table. It has been great sharing my design knowledge and tips with you. For future design ideas stayed tuned for new updates and more details visit me at www.nancypearsonltd.com •

MNDFL Meditation

By Daniel J. Bollinger

ocated in Greenwich Village is the recently opened meditation studio MNDFL Meditation. MNDFL offers 3045 minute classes all day long with 27 different teachers all certified in varying disciplines. MNDFL offers a range of meditation classes from the complete beginner to the master. The health benefits of meditation are starting to be recognized and scientifically proven. For example Harvard researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital determined that, “meditation literally rebuilds the brains grey matter in just eight weeks.” It is the very first study to document that meditation produces changes over time in the brain’s grey matter. It is well known that meditation improves immunity, memory, sleep, and helps combat stress. So if you want better sleep, a healthier immune system, and less stress in your life let me tell you why MNDFL is a very special sanctuary. To provide some background on the coowners Lodro Rinzler and Ellie Burrows, Ellie runs the business side of things while Lodro concentrates on the meditation.

Hindu, Jewish, and Zen all under one roof. All teachers offer simple techniques in an accessible manner. For those who practice the spiritual arts and know the power of intent looking over the schedule of classes you will see the theme oriented classes each offer something to meditate on. From meditating on breath, emotions, movement, sound, sleep, mothering, kids, to energy and heart MNDFL certainly has a class (or classes) that can help you on your spiritual journey to greater awareness. In essence you choose what would be most helpful to your day based on the intent of the class. For example, their Sleep class promotes, “At the end of your workday come in and let us take your mind from 100 miles-per-hour to 10. Unwind during a guided meditation session meant to put you at ease and allow for a smooth transition home and into bed. That is, if you can make it to bed. You just might fall asleep on our cushion.” Even with each class theme each teacher has a different method of meditation. So no matter what your level and what method works for you one can certainly find it at MNDFL. After class students are welcome to enjoy the lounge which is set up like a living room. There are many books available to learn about meditation for all levels from beginner to expert. Many of the teachers are themselves the authors of these books. The lounge also always serves tea since MNDFL has different tea sponsors that rotate periodically.

Lodro Rinzler has been practicing and teaching meditation for over 15 years. He was a monk and has written many books on meditation including “Sit Like A Buddha: A Pocket Guide to Meditation” which is a great book for a beginner. Ellie Burrows was a film executive for many years. She practiced spiritual arts as a hobby but deep down wanted it to be her full blown lifestyle. So she quit the film industry, got her coaching certificate and met Lodro while volunteering for a non-profit he was running. One day Ellie pitched Lodro with a simple idea to create a meditation space to go to any time since there was nothing in NYC offering that. Lodro liked the idea... and viola! MNDFL Meditation was born.

MNDFL exists to enable humans to feel good. They are New York City’s premier meditation studio. They feature expert teachers from a variety of traditions offering simple techniques in an accessible manner. When classes are not in session, their meditation room is open to the public for self-guided practice. With all of the different teachers and classes MNDFL Meditation is a spiritual academy that knows that everyone is here for some reason. There is a communal atmosphere present that is very relaxing from the moment you walk in the door.

With 27 teachers MNDFL Meditation offers expert teachers from a variety of traditions including Buddha, Kundalini, Tibetan,

How to Age Gracefully… Do it in French By Dr. Doris Day ow old are you?” Such a simple question, only four words, but even when asked in the privacy of the exam room, by a white-coat clad physician, the response is hesitation, cringing, stress and increased blood pressure, and the evocation of the “fight or flight” mechanism usually reserved for bear attacks. Some even might say the legislators that put the HIPAA laws into place were really trying to protect this one “awful” number above all other medical information…. The answers I have heard over the years to this one question have been very amusing. Some answer very quickly or tell me before I can ask them, waiting to see if I’ll look surprised at how much younger they look than the number they just announced, and I am surprised at how often that turns out to be true. You simply can’t be 120 Mrs. Jones, you don’t look a day over 40! Others simply won’t answer, while yet others come up with very creative ways of letting me know how sensitive a question this 60 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

can be. One of my favorites was: “honey, I’m so old, I lie about my kids age!” And yet others just give their birth year and hope I’m bad at math. Recently one patient came up with a number that really got me thinking about how I would answer this question over time. When I asked how old she was she said “40 10” rather than saying 50. A light bulb went off in my head. Having learned a little French in school 100 or so years ago, but who’s counting… I recalled that in French, once they hit 70, they were smart enough to stop right there. You continue to age, but your age miraculously ceases to get larger. Seventy in French translates to 60 10 in English, and the best is when you hit 80, hopefully in the best of health and spirits, you get to be quatre vingt, which translates to four 20’s. How great is that? Who wouldn’t love to be 20 4 times? 80 looks like a great place to be when you put it that way! Even 90 works, it translates to 4 20’s 10. They don’t even have a unique number for 90! If you are lucky enough to make it to 90, in good health and spirits or

not, you won’t ever have to lie about your age since you’ll just be a combination of so many other younger and more vibrant numbers. It does not get better than that. Apparently in French 90 is the new 20…. 4 times, plus 10, that is. Another value I have learned from my European colleagues is the aesthetic of the natural beauty. That is the idea of using all the tools available, starting with skin care and understanding the power of great ingredients to preserve, restore and rejuvenate the skin, along with nutraceuticals and in office treatments to help you look like the youngest best version of yourself without changing or devaluing your own special features that make you, you. The idea is to be a version of the younger set of numbers in your age, a way to help you look on the outside as great as you feel on the inside. Here are some of my favorite tips: • As the summer months are well upon us be sure to stay vigilant about applying and reapplying sun protection and being sun smart. This means using an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days, wear a hat and sunglasses, wear sun protective clothing and seek shade when possible. • Eat foods high in antioxidants. These are foods like berries, green leafy vegetables, almonds, walnuts and fish. You can even add in a little red wine. There are numerous studies that show that eating foods high in antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids, aka healthy fats, will give you added protection against damage from ultraviolet radiation, and will help lower your risk of both skin cancer and premature aging. • Think about nutraceuticals- these are functional foods with specific benefits for the skin. • See your dermatologist for an annual skin cancer screening and an evaluation and guidance for your skin care regimen. This can include products available at your local drug store along with cosmeceuticals which are designed to help even out skin tone, minimize the appearance of lines, wrinkles and pores, and even improve skin texture. Don’t underestimate the power of the right product on your skin. I’ve seen results that are dramatic and beautiful. Some of my favorite ingredients are retinol, niacinamide, peptides, matrikines, growth factors, vitamin C and others. One thing you may not realize is that the formulation as a whole contains two components. The first is the active ingredients and the second is the vehicle. You can have the best active ingredient but in the wrong vehicle it either won’t be effective or, even worse, it may be irritating to the skin. My favorite comparison is to that of a baker vs a non-expert. You could give us both eggs, flour, sugar and butter, but I promise the chef ’s cake will come out better. As a scientist I look for data and evidence that formulations are effective and I see a broad range of products at a broad range of prices that work very well. • Check out the latest non-surgical approaches to rejuvenation. The idea is to keep you skin at it’s healthiest most beautiful, to not fall behind by doing smaller treatments from a relatively younger age as needed and to always be the most beautiful version of yourself. This is now possible due to the wonderful devices and tools we have available, treatments such as Ulthera and Thermage, Endymed and Voluma, Restylane Lyft, and now the brand new Volbella as well. There’s so much that can be done, but just as with the formulation in skin care products, know that these tools are only as good as the training and skill of the person doing it. It is very important to see an aesthetic dermatologist so you can get the most out of the treatment. • Dr. Day, a dermatologist, is affiliated with NYU Langone Hospital.

Breaking Sweat in the Meatpacking District By Jessica Shepherd, M.D. hat is the best way to learn about your neighborhood? Explore it! The Meatpacking district is full of fashion houses, hip restaurants, exclusive boutiques and is much more than the nightlife that many associate as being all it has to offer. This community is at the peak of fitness and wellness thanks to Lauren Danziger, the executive director of The Meatpacking District’s Sweat Sessions. Lauren takes personal pride in this project and is immersed in the fitness community here in New York City. Danziger is a classically trained chef who was diagnosed with severe celiac disease, which has caused her to focus much of her life on healthy eating and a fit lifestyle. This summer will be her fifth year offering complimentary fitness classes for New Yorkers, which began in 2012 and have grown exponentially since then. NYLM sat down and chatted with Lauren to hear how she has transformed the perception of this area and get all the latest details on what the Meatpacking District has to offer. What does wellness mean to you? Wellness is about being in balance. It’s the total package of FITNESS, DIET AND MENTAL HEALTH and being aligned and working together. For me the fitness and diet didn’t fall into place until the mental aspect fell into place. What inspired you to create this program? The Sweat Sessions are held in the heart of in the Meatpacking District and was inspired by and created as a way to support the vibrancy of the district, to bring people to the area for something beyond the famed food and nightlife. Initially, it was once a month June, July and August. The second year we increased the frequency and now it averages 3 times a month, May through August.

The variety keeps the mind active and keeps people from going into a “comfort zone” with one type of workout. A further benefit is that everything learned and experienced can be extrapolated to home because it does not require equipment and best of all it is free! What has been the response to the program? Plain and simple... it has been awesome! The Class by TT is a new feature that combines a must try mind/body experience! It incorporates vocalization and meditation into the intense body weight class to relieve stress. How do you see Sweat Sessions impacting peoples daily lives? It makes daily routines easier, It gives people a dose of vitamin D and an excuse to get outside, Classes are free, so its easy on the wallet, It is an opportunity to learn new ways to incorporate fitness into your life and lastly accessibility is key. Ultimately, people can begin to approach fitness from a different perspective and it’s not intimidating How has your journey in health inspired this movement? I have always loved being active and a lifelong tennis player until a misdiagnosed stress fracture in 2014 led to my not working out for 3 months. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a stress fracture it was from my broken back years earlier that caused a spinal condition. I took physical therapy which I felt was not getting me to the level I needed to be. I found Barre which gave me the strength and power I needed physically but also mentally and as a resuIt lost 30 pounds. This transformed me and I became a better person also through therapy and feeling in control of my life. This changed my outlook on life because I focused on total wellness, not just working out or dieting. Through this injury I was able to find a path to be the best “me” I could be and I wanted to have others experience the same.

The impetus was to highlight different elements of the neighborhood and change the perception of the area. We wanted the locals to know the depth of business here in the Meatpacking District, and we found free programming a dynamic way to do this.

This year, the Sweat Sessions partnered with Samsung 837 who provides a “cool down” and an experience of wellness through access to healthy food from area restaurants and food purveyors, as well as access to try out some fit technology and how that can enhance one’s wellness. •

What makes the Sweat Sessions unique as a fitness program? The variety is foremost. We have so many different modalities this summer, including everything from Barre, HIIT, Pilates, Yoga, Boxing, Cardio Dance, we also have ACCESS with Rebecca Kennedy, the first active recovery workout in NYC.

V is for Vegetarian: A Sample of the Best NYC Vegetarian Hotspots By Jitendra Bhojwani ith vegetarianism on the rise, even celebrities are getting increasingly vocal about it. But many people still believe that being vegetarian means stifling your natural cravings for tasty food. Irrespective of whether you favor or oppose this statement, you probably have a friend or two (or a few) who is a confirmed vegetarian. While that may not affect your friendship a bit, it does pose a problem when you want to party outside. However, there are several eateries in New York that serve such palatable vegetarian cuisine that your vegetarian friends will be salivating and omnivores will not be disappointed either! So, here V-GO on a Veggie trip. The Queens Kickshaw The restaurant is a humble yet honest endeavor of a local couple. It has “youthful charm” as many of its clients include young students and artists. Great artwork is on display and every Friday night they have music performances. Its ambiance has a quaint, bright feeling that can lift up the spirits instantly. Now let’s talk business. Curried Pumpkin seeds, a signature snack offered by the eatery has tangy, strong flavors simply popping on your taste buds thus increasing the cravings. For the main course, roasted vegetables would be great delight with their bright, accentuated flavors. If you do not mind going a bit heavy on your stomach, you can also grease your throat with Mac’ n Cheese with cheddar, smoked mozzarella and roasted vegetables. The place is liked for its different varieties of grilled cheese with a quaint royal character that will perfectly quench your flavor desires. Although they have fantastically flavored Hibiscus Cheesecake with naughty strawberries you can also go for Chocolate Pudding that uses Madagascar chocolate and has a quaint rustic-marries-royal flavor. Best things are reserved till the last moment: beer and cider. Here beer and cider is an elaborated affair. Your first sip might be hurried but soon you will slow down to allow yourself to experience the authenticity of flavor and aroma of beer/cider before subtly swallowing the sip. A few things are matchless in New York: Queen Kickshaw’s cheese variety and drinking experience are certainly among them. MADE IN NY: Manhattan Moonshine By Virginia Ingalls

ith cocktail culture booming in New York, there is certainly no shortage of Speakeasies and high-end mixology bars in the City. What some of the best ones have in common is a revolutionary new Silver Whiskey called Manhattan Moonshine, which is rapidly emerging as a number one choice for the discerning drinkers of New York. Inspired by the cocktail renaissance that occurred during American Prohibition and the glamorous yet subversive nightlife that accompanied it, Manhattan Moonshine is the world’s first luxury Silver Whiskey and has been developed to be the perfect Whiskey for cocktails. A popular misconception that moonshine (silver Whiskey) is cheaply made, harsh tasting, and made in the backwoods has led people to believe that it cannot be a premium or high quality spirit. It is this misconception that gave birth to modern day “moonshines” packaged in mason jars or faux-jug-style bottles. In actuality, much of the moonshine that was produced during Prohibition, the high water mark of moonshine production, was produced by sophisticated distilleries that operated in secret, and what they produced flowed into highclass Speakeasies across the country. Now that moonshine is being produced legally, moonshine has come to refer to any barely-aged or un-aged Whiskey. Essentially, moonshine is to Whiskey what White or Silver Rum is to Rum and Silver or Blanco Tequila is to Tequila, i.e. a simpler and more versatile expression of the spirit without the heavier barrel flavors. That being said, not all moonshines are created equal. Whereas other moonshines are made by following traditional Aged-Whiskey or Bourbon recipes and excluding the final step of barrel aging, the recipe for Manhattan Moonshine was developed from the outset to create a barely-aged Whiskey, meaning that it has been designed to have a smooth yet complex flavor without the need for significant aging. More specifically, it features a unique four-grain recipe that contains no corn. When corn is used to make Bourbon, it has time to soften in the barrel during the aging process, which masks and removes the corn mash’s natural grassy harshness, leaving the delicious flavors of Bourbon that people enjoy. On the other hand, when corn-based Whiskey is not significantly aged, as in most moonshines on the market, grassy harshness dominates its flavor. Instead, Manhattan Moonshine’s unique grain bill features a combination of Oats, Rye, Spelt (an ancestral form of wheat) and Malted Barley, all grown in New York State. This unusual grain bill, which was developed over the course of almost two years by Founder and CEO Will Kehler and Master Distiller Ian Smiley, creates the soft, complex, and versatile flavor that has earned Manhattan Moonshine the highest rating of any moonshine or un-aged Whiskey ever, from industry journal Whisky Advocate. Its versatility is on display at cocktail havens such as Highlands, Weather Up, and Bar Cyrk, where Manhattan Moonshine is served with ingredients like black pepper, espresso, maple syrup, or Fernet Branca, much to the delight of Whiskey lovers and cocktail enthusiasts alike. It is not just experimental cocktail bars that love Manhattan Moonshine however, storied institutions such as the Harvard Club, Aretsky’s Patroon, and the Montauk Yacht Club also serve this Silver Whiskey. These establishments are finding that something as simple as a Manhattan Moonshine and tonic is a welcome twist on a classic order and a great way for them to give their guests something familiar but memorable – and made in New York. At the end of the day, with new people becoming interested in starting to drink Whiskey and with mixologists constantly pushing the envelope with new cocktail flavors and combinations, the demand for a Whiskey as approachable and versatile as Manhattan Moonshine will continue to grow, and the category of Silver Whiskey (moonshine) will continue to flourish. Recipe of the Month SUMMER FIG AND CARAMELIZED ONION SALAD WITH AGED BALSAMIC REDUCTION By Elizabeth Howes or years, this has been my go-to flavor combination for parties because of its broad appeal and versatility. California figs are available almost year-round, but the richest, most decadent fruit typically hits in August through early October. It’s worth seeking out a couple of varieties for this salad. And if blue cheese isn’t your thing, an earthy triple crème brie can easily stand in. Serves 4 1 cup aged balsamic vinegar (preferably at least 12 years) 1⁄2 teaspoon Herbes de Provence 1 clove garlic, finely diced 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided 1 tablespoon grapeseed oil 1 large yellow onion, quartered and thinly sliced 2 cups thinly shaved fresh fennel, placed in ice water until ready to assemble 2 pints mixed fresh figs (about
2 pounds), sliced into various sizes 4 cups packed spinach, thinly sliced into strips 3⁄4 cup walnuts, toasted and then roughly chopped 1⁄2 pound blue cheese, broken into bite- size pieces 1⁄4 cup microgreens (optional) sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper, plus Maldon sea salt for finishing For the balsamic reduction, combine the balsamic vinegar, Herbes de Provence, and garlic in a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then turn off the heat, allowing the garlic to lightly infuse the vinegar. Season with salt and pepper. Once cool, slowly whisk in 1 tablespoon of the olive oil until combined. Use immediately, or store in a glass jar in the refrigerator for up to a week. Bring the balsamic reduction to room temperature before using it because it becomes very thick when cold. Next, caramelize the onion. Add the grapeseed oil and onion to a medium sauté pan over medium-high heat. Once the onion just begins to turn a light golden color, reduce the heat to low. Allow to cook for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onion becomes very soft and a deep caramel color develops. To prevent sticking, feel free to add a small amount of water. Remove from the heat, and allow to cool. Then transfer to an airtight container, and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. To assemble the salad, drain the fennel and dry well. Toss the spinach and fennel with the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Arrange the figs, fennel, spinach, caramelized onion, walnuts, and cheese on a large platter or on individual plates. Sprinkle with Maldon sea salt and black pepper, if desired. Garnish with microgreens, if using, and serve the balsamic reduction on the side. • JULY 2016 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 71

On the Big Screen By Pat Collins

JASON BOURNE RATED PG-13 “I volunteered because of a lie”... - Jason Bourne After a 9 year absence Matt Damon is back as the amnesiac superspy confronting new enemies and upheaval abroad. Julia Stiles returns as fellow spy and Bourne confidante Nicky Parsons. Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (ex machina) joins a first rate cast that includes Tommy Lee Jones as the CIA director, Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings) and Vincent Cassell. A high speed bike chase and an austerity riot in Athens (shot in the Canary Islands) are two of the many adrenalinrush action scenes choreographed by director Paul Greengrass.

STAR TREK BEYOND “This is where the frontier pushes back” - Krall During a five year mission to explore the final frontier, the Enterprise crew comes under attack, abandons ship, lands on an unknown planet and is confronted by a new formidable enemy. Director Justin Lin who helmed four episodes of the Fast and the Furious franchsie wisely cast the charismatic Idris Elba as the villainous Krall. It took a team of ace makeup artists to transform him into a reptilian alien. The 13th film in the Star Trek series stars Chris Pine (Capt. Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Lieutenant Nyota Uhura) and Simon Pegg (Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott) who co-wrote the screenplay. The sequel is set two and a half years after the events that transpired in 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness” which grossed a whopping half billion dollars at the global box office.

THE LEGEND OF TARZAN RATED PG-13 Director David Yates does not dwell on the orphaned boy raised by apes story and instead fast forwards to London’s aristocratic jungle populated by the rich and powerful. The boy who was Tarzan is Lord Greystoke - also known as John Clayton III. His lordship (Alexander Skarsgard) and his wife Jane (Margot Robbie) enjoy a Downton Abbey –like lifestyle. However he is easily persuaded to return to the African continent as a trade emissary unaware that he is a part of a conspiracy devised by a corrupt Belgian official (Christoph Waltz). The action kicks in when Greystroke sheds his aristocratic bearing to outwit and outmaneuver the venally greed colonialist Mr. Skarsgard, who is known to viewers as the vampire Eric Northman from HBO’s “True Blood”, who has spent many hours in the gym to get in shape for a physically demanding role. Tarzan benefits from a superior supporting cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Jim Broadbent and Djimon Hounsou. 78 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

BFG RATED PG Steven Spielberg and Disney, the two most admired creators of family entertainment, bring an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s novel The BFG (Big Friendly Giant) to the big screen. Mark Rylance, who won a best supporting Oscar for Mr. Spielberg’s Bridge Of Spies, has the titular role of the 24’ giant who kidnaps Sophie, a lonely, curious and smart orphan played by 10 year old Ruby Barnhill. His mission is to protect Sophie from an army of flesh eating giants who prey on small children. Fortunately for Sophie, her BFG is a vegetarian. Advice for Parents: I suggest reading the book to children 8 and under to prepare them for the film’s few scary scenes.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS RATED R They are older but blessedly not wiser or sober. After a too long absence from the screen, Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) reunite in a highly anticipated movie based on the BBC’s popular 90’s comedy series. The show- better known as Ab Fab- ran stateside on Comedy Central. Edina, the president of her own fashion public relations firm, and Patsy, who works for a glossy London fashion magazine, never say no to posh events where celebs are present and free cocktails are served. Disaster strikes at a launch party where Kate Moss goes overboard and drowns in the Thames. The media blames Patsy for the tragedy and with Edina she flees to the French Riviera- the ideal destination for two self-indulgent, champagne swigging singles. Starry cameos are provided by Rebel Wilson, Jon Hamm, Kim Kardashian and Stella McCarthy.

MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES RATED R No summer slate of movies is complete without a “wedding gone horribly wrong” comedy. This year’s entry is Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” with Adam DeVine and Zac Efron as party hearty brothers whose parents insist they find suitable dates for their sister’s lavish wedding in Hawaii. The two launch their quest on Wendy Williams talk show and eventually choose Alice ( Anna Kendrick) and Tatiana ( Aubrey Plaza) who are not the respectable “all-American” young ladies they initially pretend to be. Will Mr. DeVine and Mr. Efron match Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn’s chemistry in “The Wedding Crashers”? Definitely not.

ICE AGE Perfectly timed to open in air conditioned theaters during the scorcher days in July, the fifth in a 3D computer animated “chill-ogy”, features returning voice cast members Ray Romano (Manny the wooly mammoth), Queen Latifah (Ellie Manny’s mate), John Leguizamo (Sid the Sloth) and Denis Leary (Diego the saber tooth tiger). Chaos ensues when Scrat (Chris Wedge), ever in pursuit of acorns, inadvertently triggers a series of cosmic events which result in an asteroid aimed at planet Earth. No need to panic because renowned real life astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson voices the weisel / astronomer who saves the day. Dr. Tyson also serves as director of the Hayden Planetarium - an ideal place for New Yorkers and out of towners to visit before or after seeing the movie.

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS RATED PG One line in the coming attractions trailer sums up the plot “what they do when we’re not home”. Max a terrier voiced by Louis C. K., registers disapproval when his owner Kate (Ellie Kemper) brings home a mongrel named Duke (Eric Stonestreet). They vie for Kate’s attention and compete for extra helpings of Alpo. The rivalry ceases when the two are confronted by Snowball (Kevin Hart) a white rabbit with a cause. Snowball and his fellow abandoned followers seek equal footing with domesticated pets. Last year Snoopy was the top dog at the box office with a global gross of $250 million. Will Max and crew exceed that number? Unfortunately, probably not.

THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR RATED R Of those who intend to profit during an election year none are more obviously opportunistic than the producers of The Purge: Election Year. The trailer contains a slogan “Keep America Great” and the most vulnerable character, A US Senator and presidential candidate, vows to abolish the ritual if elected. Senator Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) is the sole survivor of a Purge attack that killed her family. With bodyguard (Frank Grillo), Roan dodges the homicidal crazies and government forces who oppose the ban. For those unacquainted with the bloody franchise here is a brief explanation. During the 24 hour ritual known as The Purge, citizens may legally commit any crime including murder. The wacky theory is that serious crimes will decrease in a society which allows everyone to ignore the sixth commandment once a year. The second installment - The Purge Anarchy - cost an estimated $10 million and grossed $111 million worldwide. Why is the bloody series popular? Maybe we don’t want to know the answer...

BAD MOMS RATED R Moms just wanna’ have fun especially when they need a break from handling family life, careers and the pressure to look like those celebrity mothers on magazine covers. Three stressed out suburban mothers played by Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Bell form an instant bond and agree to let loose. In one scene the tipsy trio guzzle vodka in the liquor aisle of the local supermarket. The comedy from the writers of The Hangover is due in theaters July 29.

July Broadway Reviews with Pat Collins

studio boss Jack Warner and his long and cherished friendship with Bob Hope with whom he entertained our troops during World War II. Robert Creighton who co-wrote the score’s original songs with Christopher McGovern, is completely captivating -and seemingly tireless in the title role. Jeremy Benton excels as the low key Mr. Hope who steadfastly supported Cagney’s early advocacy of civil rights legislation and stood by his side when HUAC (The House Un- American Activities Committee) interrogated Cagney and other stars who were wrongly suspected of being Communist sympathizers.

CAGNEY WESTSIDE THEATER From the first scene on the Warner Studios lot in 1930 to the show’s finale -a rousing rendition of Yankee Doodle Dandy - Cagney is a sublimely entertaining musical that celebrates his more than 50 years in show business from vaudeville tap dancer to Hollywood star and venerated legend. The show focuses on Mr. Cagney’s film career beginning with Public Enemy (1931), his long and contentious relationship with CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: PARAMOUR LYRIC THEATER The aerialists suspended high above the Lyric’s stage are a wonder to behold but the musical beneath them lands with a thud. Paramour which was conceived by Cirque du Soleil’s creative director Jean - Francois Bouchard, combines the artistry the troupe is famous for with a new and dreadful original musical set in Hollywood’s so called golden age. The hybrid is the first and hopefully the last for the internationally renowned, Montreal based company. An all too familiar plot revolves around a tyrannical director, the pretty young singer he’s in love with and her songwriter/boyfriend. No tinsel town cliche goes unspoken and every song vanishes instantly from one’s memory. Paramour however is redeemed by its extraordinary airborne cast. Twin aerialists Andrew and Kevin Atherton dazzle in a series of death defying moves hanging onto a leather strap. One slip and they would plummet 24 feet to a hard surface below. The piece de resistance is the finale’s thrilling chase scene set atop a New York hotel at night. The pursued and the pursuers leap and bounce from one location to another using an enormous trampoline. Choreographer and acrobatic designer Shana Carroll is the wizard behind this show stopper. Audience members in need of a stiff drink- and trust me, they will need one to endure the score- are allowed to take liquid refreshment to their seats. Paramour reportedly cost $25 million to produce. The creators are hopeful their show will perform significantly better at the box office than the ill-fated high flying: “Spiderman” -the U2/Bono flop that was performed in the same theater -then known as the Foxwoods- 6 years ago. 80 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

The musical serves as a reminder of Cagney’s unique versatility. Can you imagine any of the current generation of tough guys -for example Jason Statham or Vin Diesel - in tap shoes? Mr. Cagney of course was more than “the tough guy in tap shoes”. Kudos to “Cagney’s cast and creative team for presenting a more complete portrait of the man and the entertainer. Cagney’s first rate behind the scenes team includes director Bill Castello and choreographer Joshua Bergasse. Celebrate Mr. Cagney’s birthday- July 17 or July Fourth -or any occasion at the Westside Theater.

LIN MANUEL-MIRANDA EXITS HAMILTON The Tony, Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winner who wrote Hamilton’s book, music and lyrics, will depart his phenomenally successful musical July 9. Mr. Miranda will not be idle for long. He costars with Emily Blunt in the “Mary Poppins” sequel and is writing the score to ‘Moona’, an upcoming Disney movie. An adaptation of his 2008 Tony winning musical “In The Heights” is in the works. He won the best actor in a musical Tony for his performance as the show’s young bodega owner in Washington Heights.

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER IS BACK IN TOWN When the revival of CATS opens at The Neil Simon Theater July 14. Mr. Webber will have three shows running simultaneously on Broadway. The other two are, School Of Rock, the hugely successful Tony nominated musical based on the 2003 movie and The Phantom of the Opera which opened 30 years ago. The original Broadway production of CATS ran for 18 years. The show, based on T. S. Eliot’s book of Practical Cats, has been seen by an estimated 73 million people worldwide.

Pat Collins’ Picks of New Home Entertainment Releases HOUSE OF CARDS SEASON 4 Rejoice all you political junkies in need of a fictional respite from the seemingly endless prelude to the 2016 November Presidential election. The fourth season of Netflix’s addictive hit focuses of President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) facing an unexpected primary challenge as he seeks a second term. His equally despicable and conniving wife Claire (Robin Wright) regards her husband as potentially detrimental to her own naked ambitions. Ellen Burstyn joined the cast in season 4 as Claire’s emotionally distant mother. Neve Campbell came on board as a political consultant and Cicely Tyson splendidly contributed as a long serving member of Congress from the great state of Texas. BY THE SEA RATED R Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt reunite for the first time on screen since Mr. and Mrs. Smith, their 2005 married assassins’ movie which triggered off screen events leading to a real life relationship. Ms. Jolie wrote and directed this expensive vanity project. By The Sea cost $10 million to make and grossed a mere $3.3 million at the box office. The film is set on the coast of Malta in the 1970’s. An American couple with marital problems check into a deluxe hotel overlooking the Mediterranean. He’s a novelist with writer’s block. She’s a dancer. He hangs out in the hotel bar. She takes long solo walks on the beach. The routine changes with the arrival of young newlyweds who occupy the suite next to theirs. The unhappily married Vanessa and Roland watch their sexually active neighbors by peering through a hole in the wall that separates their two suites. Apparently a pricey accommodation does not guarantee privacy. Movie goers and the media are more interested in the Jolie-Pitt real life relationship than the one in By The Sea. ORPHAN BLACK SEASON 4 One way to prepare for season 5 of BBC America’s hit series is to binge watch the previous season and Tatiana Maslany’s Golden Globe nominated performance - or more accurately performances. Ms. Maslany plays seven distinctly different cloned characters. They include a Canadian soccer mom, a police detective and a Ukrainian assassin. The shows villains-the Neolutionists believe human evolution is best served by genetic technology. 84 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS RATED PG 13 Mothers and Daughters - which is not to be confused with “Mother’s Day” - but easily could be given its large cast of female stars and its superficial examination of the relationship between parent and grown up child. Susan Sarandon’s character is estranged from her daughter - played by Ms. Sarandon’s real life daughter Eva Amurri. Nina (Sharon Stone) constantly bickers with offspring and Christina Ricci is shocked to learn that her older “sister” is her mother. The plots and subplots resemble those of daytime soap operas in another era. DIVERGENT - ALLEGIANT PART 1 RATED PG 13 The first half of the sci-fi adventures’ two part finale stars Shailene Woodley as the courageous Tris Prior – the creation of Divergent author Veronica Roth. The action scenes are unimpressive. The plot has too many gaps and too few genuinely thrilling surprises. Overall the series pales in comparison to the far more compelling Hunger Games franchise. Ms. Woodley despite her excellent performances in The Fault In Our Stars and The Descendants currently lacks the charisma to play a big screen action heroine. The very good grownups in the cast are Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer and Jeff Daniels. I SAW THE LIGHT RATED R Hank Williams’ influence on country music, his short career (he died at 29) and a turbulent personal life are examined in “I Saw The Light”. Tom Hiddleston who is best known for his role as Loki in “The Avengers” and front runnner to succeed Daniel Craig in the role fo James Bond, refused to lip synch and instead learned to sing Williams’ chart topping hits including “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “Hey Good Looking’”. Williams, who cheated on his wife, drank to excess and was addicted to morphine and pain killers was nonetheless a legend. The film however unfavorably compares to the far superior ”Walk The Line”, the Johnny Cash biopic, which starred Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. THE GREEN ROOM RATED R A struggling punk band unwisely accepts a gig at an Oregon road house, finds a dead body in the grungy green room, and spends the rest of the movie trying to survive a gang of murderous neo Nazi white supremacists. One of the latter is played by Patrick Stewart whose early training with the Royal Shakespeare Company may not have prepared him for this, horrifyingly violent R rated bloodbath. •

Time for Tee: On the Subject of (golf) Balls By Jeffrey Bradford olfers often discuss the merits of which golf club to use for which shot on a particular hole of a certain course with great regularity. Considering the best putter for the greens – a mallet head versus blade – can lead to a discussion of epic proportions. What however is far less often discussed is the element of every shot in the game of golf – the golf ball itself. The USGA define what is a golf ball quite strictly including, under appendix III of the Rules of Golf dimensions such as weight ( not be greater than 1.620 ounces avoirdupois), size (The diameter of the ball must not be less than 1.680 inches) in addition to velocity and symmetry.

Players seem to be in one of three camps on the subject. Some use whatever ball was used on the golf course – “the gatherer”. Others will purchase a particular ball for its technical or aesthetic merits or alternatively the halo effect of the professional golfer that uses the ball themselves. Turning to the issue of what players themselves are using we consulted Ian McGowan of the New York Golf Center (www. nygolfcenter.com) for his view on the three top sellers; Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1X are by far the most popular balls and also the most expensive. They go long off the tee, produce backspin onto the green and feel soft off the putter. There is no better ball for a high, mid or low handicap golfer. Price: $47.99 per dozen. The Callaway Chrome Soft has grabbed a chunk of market share. The performance is almost equivalent to the pro V1 and pro V1x and they are cheaper at $39.99. Many people prefer this golf ball, originally released in 2015 and some would regard this as the best new ball on the market. Bridgestone E6 is a fantastic ball for the 12 handicap and higher who does not want to see $4 fly away every time they slice it in the trees. Because this ball spins less, it actually reduces the number of lost golf balls and will cost less per golf ball as well. It will not be quite as responsive in terms feel as the other two golf balls I have mentioned. Price: $28.99 per dozen. Ultimate Accessory: Clicgear collapsible Golf Cart Are you a regular cart golfer that has recently walked the course carrying your bag? Do you play regularly at public courses and bemoan the push carts which have the controllability of an arthritic shopping trolley? ClicGear has the answer in its collapsible golf push cart. Plus they have a range of accessories including ball cleaners, cigar holders, shoe cleaners and even multi-colored wheels to really trick it out for those times when you have no choice but to ‘rough it’. Entrepreneurs Corner: Stefani Markowitz By Victoria Ingalls 1. What experience would you say triggered your interest in the real estate business? My family led the way for me to get into the real estate business. My grandfather, Richard Friedman, brought Rutenberg to Manhattan in 2007 but he had, for years, been developing the idea and been involved in numerous lucrative real estate deals. Basically, you could say my interest was triggered from hearing about real estate around the kitchen table. From a young age, he taught me all about the business, how the Rutenberg model was different, and what it would take to be a success in New York City. I speak with him every day to discuss the future of the company and to get his perspective on how to be a great leader and how to inspire our team. 2. How long ago did you decide you wanted to run your own brokerage and how long did it take to achieve? Why? Since I was high school, I knew that if I followed the path my grandfather was laying out for me, I’d one day end up running this brokerage. Thinking back more than ten years now, the plan came together as I thought it would: I got my license; found some great mentors to learn how to do deals the right way; built up a practice; researched different models; and worked with some great clients. When the time was right, I came over to Rutenberg. 3. Which question on the real estate licensing test do you remember most and why? I know that some people have a hard time with the real estate exam, but I had sort of been getting ready for it for a while. I studied a lot, so I found it all pretty straightforward. The only thing I remember is getting the date for the test. The time had come, I was truly embarking on my career, so I remember the date and looking forward to beginning. 4. What do you see as the main challenges for commercial and residential real estate brokerage businesses? Do you see this changing in the short to medium (3-5 year) time frame? The biggest challenge for the real estate business has been the Internet, and that transformation is only going to accelerate over the next five years. So much of what a traditional broker used to be responsible for from the head office is now being supplanted by computers on the client side. Having a Main Street shop, mailing out postcards, all of that seems so old fashioned now. Our company’s 90 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

100% commission model was designed to be very efficient with low overhead, and combined with computer programs that are getting more powerful every day, we’re empowering agents to do more from their iPhone than was possible by the biggest company with thousands of support staff, even 10 or 15 years ago. The business will always be about relationships and service, but computers will do more of the heavy lifting. The question for an agent is, how much commission should you have to give up if all your leads are coming from your hard work and ads you’ve posted online? 5. Tell us a little about your business and about your typical day? At 6 am, I’m already at the Tracy Anderson studio. I run up the steps, stow my bag and get ready for the most intense workout anywhere, ever. I studied movement and kinesiology in college and Tracy would basically be the curriculum! We’re dancing, high kicking, jumping, free arms and then with weights, getting our heartbeats to race. By 8am I am in the office before everyone else, because, otherwise, it’s hard for me to get cracking on my stuff, before helping them with theirs. By noon, I am famished. I usually keep lunch healthy, with a Sweetgreens salad (their kale Caesar is awesome!) or a delicious chopped salad from Fred’s at Barneys. Most days, I end up leaving the office in the afternoon to check in with developers, tour new buildings or get to industry events. Once I’m back in the office, no matter how busy I am, I make a point of calling my grandfather, just to touch base. Towards the end of the day, I check in with the agents that are at the office, offering support and high fives, especially when they’re coming by to pick up their commission checks. By 7 pm or so, I try to leave the office, either for a dinner with colleagues or to a charity or networking event before a final email check around midnight, and calling it a day! 6. What are your favorite projects you are working on currently? Last year, I introduced a full real estate education curriculum, built around seminars from industry leaders and specialists to support agent needs. This was a big favorite because it brought the agents together in a way that we could facilitate team building and encourage collaborative work, and also get everyone exposed to fresh thinking about our business from the experts and guest speakers who come through our training center. I also formed a partnership with Wounded Warriors to fast-track veterans into second careers with the company, which has also become one of my favorite projects right now. For me, helping vets get back into the job market is really rewarding, and I think having people with

that tough-as-nails mindset is really good for our larger community of agents because they see how really focused people do a job and, through hard work, can become very successful in this business. 7. If someone came to you now to ask for advice about starting a real estate brokerage firm what would you say? My advice would be to hire good, quality people. Use your resources and accept support from others. Now, why start a brokerage when your skill set might be doing the deals, rather than administering them? In terms of advice, I like to say that people should do what they are very best at. In my experience, most agents who are really successful are great at the deal, great at winning new clients and great at generating referrals. If I run into a person like that today, I’d say that rather than start a real estate brokerage, join ours! We’ll take care of the administration, the paperwork, the rules and regulations, and you can do your deals. Our 100% commission model was really designed for that type of agent. 8. Outside of business what are your favorite activities? Tracy Anderson workouts in the morning, playing tennis during the summer, spending time with my family on the weekends, and my great group of girlfriends at least one night a week. Meeting up with fellow millennial entrepreneurs to discuss one another’s experiences is always fascinating. I also do a lot of philanthropic work for different organizations, including The New York City Rescue Mission, City Harvest and Race for the Cure, plus the real estate divisions of a lot of other big fundraising charities. I love taking part in all these events. •

Help Your Best Friend Survive the Dog Days of Summer By Dr. Heather Loenser he dog days of summer are officially here, and if you’re feeling the heat...chances are your pets are, too. They may not complain about it like we do, but do not for a second believe they can easily handle hours of outdoor activity. Their ancestors knew instinctively how to keep cool, but our pampered pooches need help. We are asking them to be weekend warriors; running alongside us as we bike, joining

us on long walks, swimming across the lake. We humans have a hard enough time; on Monday everyone’s complaining about their aches and pains. Whether you’re going on vacation or taking a walk in the neighborhood, make sure your pet doesn’t fall prey to common summer hazards. Surprisingly, the same precautions we take in the hot weather also apply to our pets. As a veterinarian, my job is two-fold; to heal sick pets and to educate their parents. Here are guidelines to help you and your pet have a trauma-free summer.

Don’t Leave Home Without It: A Veterinarian’s Checklist For You And Your Pet 1. Take plenty of water. We may like to drink it cold, but our dogs really do not care. What’s important is that everyone stays hydrated. Before I set out with my dogs for the day or whenever we take a road trip, I freeze a few bottles of water and in a few hours they’re icy cold and ready to drink. A simple way to check if your dog is dehydrated is to lift up his lips and feel his gums. If they’re dry and tacky instead of moist and slippery, he’s likely dehydrated. If he seems too weak to drink, take him to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Find a veterinary hospital accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (www. aaha.org) by using the AAHA Hospital Locator. Simply key in your zip code and a list of accredited hospitals will pop up. By using a hospital listed on the Locator, you’ll be getting the very best care. 2. Keep cool! For us, hand-held fans, spray bottles, and cold, wet bandanas around our neck take the edge off the heat as we sweat. However, dogs don’t sweat; they cool off by panting. Some large dogs develop compromised airways as they age, causing them to have a hard time cooling off. Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers and Newfoundlands are prime candidates for heat stroke. Since these changes occur over time, owners need to keep a watchful eye on older, large breeds. The signs can be subtle; if you notice your dog snoring, panting harshly or if his bark seems hoarse, have your vet check his breathing function. French bulldogs, English bulldogs and Boston terriers are also at risk for heat stroke. These flat-faced breeds are born with excess tissue at the back of the mouth making it difficult for them to breathe... especially in the summer. Yesterday afternoon a pet owner rushed his bulldog to my hospital after the two of them had been jogging in the heat. Unfortunately, the poor little guy didn’t make it because his owner followed the old-wives’ tale: “You can cure heat stroke by soaking a hot dog in massive amounts of cold water.” Instead of helping the situation, this actually makes it worse. A rapid decrease in body temperature can potentially cause severe shock and organ damage. The proper way to cool down a dog is to mimic “sweating.” To do this, soak a towel in warm water and douse the body parts with the least amount of fur: the belly, the inside of the ear flaps, the paw pads and the “armpits.” Afterwards, place him in front of a fan. Even if he appears to be recovered, take him to the vet to be evaluated. He could be suffering internal damage which only your vet can determine. To avoid heat stroke, exercise your dog in the cooler parts of the day and for short periods of time. And, though you’ve heard this a million times, I can’t stress it enough: Never leave your dog in an unattended car. The temperature inside can be 40 degrees hotter than it is outside. 92 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

3. Protect from pests: We use bug spray to repel the insects of summer, and our dogs need protection too...from fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Your vet will help you choose a preventative that has data to support its effectiveness. Products are available in the form of long-lasting collars, liquids applied directly to the skin and chewable pills. These medications can help prevent flea allergies, Lyme disease and heartworm disease. The American Animal Hospital Association recommends year-round parasite control. 4. Pamper the paws: Imagine walking barefoot around the city on a sweltering day or on hot sand at the beach. Ouch! The golden rule is: If we feel the heat...so do our dogs. We automatically wear shoes but seldom consider our dog’s tender tootsies. Walking on hot surfaces can literally burn their paw pads. Not only is this very painful, but there’s little you can do to keep them comfortable. To guard against burns, walk during the coolest parts of the day...early morning and after the sun sets. You might also consider purchasing a pair of booties...if you have a dog who will tolerate wearing them. 5. Click the car seat: Instinctively we buckle up our kids and ourselves...but what about the dog? Without restraining him, you’re setting yourself up for potential problems: he can distract you while driving, hit the unlock button and fall from the car, or heaven forbid, become a projectile if you stop short. Another bad idea? Allowing him to put his head out the window as you drive; your tire can cause a pebble or piece of glass to fly up and cut his face...or blind him. Our dogs are our best friends and they deserve the same care and consideration we give to ourselves and our family members. Whatever you need to keep comfortable and safe in the summer, your dog needs, too. Here’s wishing you and Fido a cool, worry-free summer! For ten years, Dr. Heather Loenser has comforted pets in their time of crisis as an emergency veterinarian. Outside the hospital, she supports her profession with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) as the staff Veterinary Advisor in Professional and Public Affairs. A sought-after guest on TV and radio, she shares her expertise on the Today Show, Fox News, Live with Kelly, Dr. Oz and local television in the New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. area. She loves nothing more than hanging out with her rescued dog, Calvin. JULY 2016 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 93

My New York Story By Mary Travis Bassett, MD, MPH have lived in Inwood, the northernmost neighborhood in Manhattan, for the past 15 years. And, unlike many New Yorkers, I live in the neighborhood in which I actually grew up. I’m proud to call Inwood home. “Upstate Manhattan,” as some call this area, has great natural charm and green spaces – Inwood Park has an original growth forest! I’m especially fond of the place where I got my first library card and my love for reading blossomed – the Inwood Library. The Washington Heights/Inwood neighborhood has seen waves of immigrant arrivals – Irish, Jewish, and more recently, Dominicans. Today, my drycleaner is from Ghana, my tailor from Peru, my corner store is staffed mainly by people from Yemen, my florist is from Mexico and my current favorite restaurant is owned by someone from the Dominican Republic. This is New York – a city of immigrants. As an almost native New Yorker (I came here from Ohio when I was 3), I take daily pleasure in all that our city has to offer. Each of the five boroughs is filled with diverse, vibrant neighborhoods. I love being able to take the subway just a few stops and find an entirely different neighborhood to experience. Unfortunately, in the most diverse city in the world, a short subway ride can also reveal unnatural differences in health. A few subway stops away, a 94 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

fellow New Yorker may live as many as 11 years less than someone living in a more affluent NYC neighborhood. What I want and what this city needs is to keep its diversity while ending gaps in life chances. Making sure that every neighborhood is a healthy neighborhood will make our city more hopeful and vibrant. For generations, people living in historically segregated and deprived neighborhoods, often Blacks and Latinos, have shouldered the heaviest burden of disease in our city. Though the leading causes of death are the same across all racial and ethnic groups, Black and Latino New Yorkers are more likely by far to die before age 65. There’s no biological difference between races such that we should expect different health outcomes. It’s unconscionable that someone’s New York City experience may differ so greatly depending on the neighborhood they call home. Learning more about my neighbors is what led me to seek a career in medicine. In the summer between high school and college, I took a job as a census taker in Harlem. Equipped with my census satchel, I had the privilege of going into people’s homes and learning more about their lives. The number of people I saw who had obvious health problems surprised me. I decided to become a doctor, as far as I know, the first in my family.

After medical school, I completed my training at Harlem Hospital. My residency began at the beginning of the 1980s, when the crack and HIV/AIDS epidemics tore through the community. I was treating patients, but saw them return days or weeks later. I realized that no matter what we did inside the walls of the hospital, it was the environment outside of the hospital that prevented my patients from staying healthy. Within the hospital walls, I couldn’t improve my patients’ substandard housing, unemployment or any of the other factors that affect a person’s ability to lead a healthy life. Later, I would live in in Zimbabwe and other parts of Africa, where I learned how other countries approach community health. Working there brought its own challenges. I was there at the beginning of the AIDS crisis, and watched friends, colleagues, students and patients die, despite our best efforts. After returning from Africa, I took what I learned to my first Health Department job as Deputy Commissioner for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. Shortly after arriving in 2002, I established District Public Health Offices in East and Central Harlem, the South Bronx and North and Central Brooklyn to lead targeted programs in these communities, which experience an excess burden of disease. The Health Department staff members who work in these offices have become part of the fabric of the communities we serve, and we’re going to continue to build on that. We will soon open Neighborhood Health Action Centers, which will better link residents of neighborhoods with high rates of chronic disease and premature death to local primary care and community services. The Action Centers will provide space for community-based organizations and Health Department staff to work together to advance neighborhood health. As the City’s doctor, I don’t take my responsibilities lightly. The public health approach considers the many facets of what makes for a healthy life – where we live, work, play and pray. Under Mayor Bill de Blasio, we’re doing our best to leave no rock unturned. We’re implementing policies and programs to lift up every resident, not just those who have the means. We’re making sure our little ones get a jump start in life through home visiting and early intervention programs and free, high-quality prekindergarten. In the area of nutition one of our initiatives is implementing a new sodium warning label that empowers people to make informed decisions about the food they consume and better watch their salt intake. We’re improving our fragmented mental health system, and so much more. We’re doing this because we know that for people to live healthier, we have to restore choice. People need good housing, a more livable wage, good education, and access to services to take control of their health. All of these things help build a healthy neighborhood. I look forward to living in a city where neither a New Yorker’s ZIP code nor skin color will have a bearing on their health or how long they will live. We have a great diversity of cultures, foods, lifestyles, spaces and experiences. A difference in health outcomes is one we can do without. • JULY 2016 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 95

15 Minutes with Miguel Antoinne

By Baruch Shemtov

iguel Antoinne's eponymous line of menswear is all made in New York City, a rarity in an industry where manufacturing continues to be sent overseas. With a growing business at his flagship Wooster Street boutique and on his website www.miguelantoinne.com, the designer is striving to build a fashion empire inspired by the Big Apple itself. 1. Why did you decide to manufacture your entire fashion line in New York? New York is home to some of the world’s best fashion designers and garment manufacturers in the world. I love being able to manage the quality of the designs at all phases of development. I love the humming sound of the sewing machines in my ears. Somehow it grounds me. I love being on team USA. 2. How has New York influenced your choice of fashion aesthetic? New York is dynamically juxtaposed. It’s black and white, raw and refined, old and new. 3. Where in New York City do you go for inspiration? I go to the streets. The best style influence comes from the streets of New York City. 4. What is your vision of what characterizes the perfectly dressed man? I'm keen on tailoring, color palette and lines. 5. In your own opinion, why does style matter? Style is a way in which we get to create our individual selves. It empowers identity. 6. What is the best style advice you have for every man to look his best every day? Keep it simple. Choose a uniform. Discover what works for you and leave everything else alone. 7. What do you never leave home without? My iPhone, and Mophie external battery charger for my iPhone. It is astonishing to think that as long as one has a smartphone and energy that you have access to anything in the world that you may need and/ or want. • 96 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY 2016

MIGUEL’S FAVORITES What is your favorite New York spot for... A haircut? Levels Barbershop in Harlem. I love a neighborhood barber shop. It’s unfussy, the grooming service is great and the energy is good there. Coffee? I’m off coffee. Now its tea. My favorite spot is Mariebelle on Broome street. It’s near my studio and store in SoHo. I love the decor of the café that sits in the rear of a decadent chocolate shop. The perfect gift? The ninth floor at Barneys on Madison Avenue. The selection of gifting items is unmatched in the city and I always treat myself to the lobster club sandwich from Fred’s that shares the floor. Dinner? The Butcher’s Daughter on Kenmare street in Nolita. Hands down Its the best vegetarian food and juice bar in the city. Some time alone? I drive around Manhattan in my car in complete silence. Other than the noises of City-life. A celebration? The Spa at the Mandarin Oriental in Columbus Circle. It’s where I can go and pretend to be king for a day or at least a few hours. The Thai Yoga Suite is life changing. www.BARUCH.tv
