NYT CRITIC’S PICK

‘‘UNEQUIVOCALLY THRILLING.’’ -THE NEW YORK TIMES

FROM THE PUBLISHER his is a beautiful time of year when holiday spirits are at an all-time high. Family traditions come alive from decorating the house with keepsakes from generations past, to picking the perfect tree from your favorite street vendor (or if you’re really ambitious visiting a tree farm to chop down your very own) and singing Christmas Carols as you bring it home. Yes, it’s a magical time ripe for making many treasured memories. Naturally, the kitchen becomes the center of attention where sweet and spicy aromas seem to waft throughout the home. Incredibly all cultures have their defining favorite dish to enjoy. Whether it’s Trifle from England, Buche de Noel from France, or Melomakarona from Greece it’s a time to share with family and friends. One of my fondest memories is making Struffoli with my grandmother. It’s was a fun time preparing the bite-size pastry that was fried and later smothered with honey and garnished with candied confetti sprinkles. Oh, the memories!

During this season of joy and happiness, let’s not forget about giving back to those less fortunate. Volunteer time by cooking or serving at a local food kitchen. Collect coats and take them to your local police precinct, or contribute to the annual “Toys for Tots” for children which will brighten any child’s world. Just remember we can make another New Yorker’s day a little better. It takes so little: A simple warm smile, a sincere thank you is all it takes. After all the presents have been unwrapped and the holiday dinner consumed, it’s time to sit back and relax. Grab a hot chocolate (with plenty of marshmallows) and take some time to watch those holiday movie classics (nowadays on demand)— guaranteed to give a warm fuzzy feeling. Miracle on 34th Street (1947 version), It’s a Wonderful Life, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, The Grinch and A Christmas Story are just a few of my favorites. Lastly, I would like to take a moment and thank all our readers and clients for the continuous support this past year. Also, I would especially like to thank my entire staff for their dedication, talents, and positive attitude in putting together a fantastic issue every month. Truly the best team I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with and ready to bring you even more entertaining and inspiring articles in 2019. I look forward to hearing from you with comments, suggestions and what you would like to see on the pages of New York Lifestyles and Pet Lifestyles Magazines. I wish everyone a Happy Holiday and a safe New Year, see you all in 2019. P.S Be sure not to make any New Year’s resolutions you can’t keep!

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2018 By Griffin Miller

uxe or practical, these gifts will send just the right message to the people you want to remember this year. Our elf scoured the market for the perfect holiday ideas—tough to shop for him, your wellness-obsessed friend, sophisticated boss, and many more. Sort by interest or browse until you’ve checked everyone off your list! HOLIDAY EDITION | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 15

FOR HIM

BEARD BRAVADO Guys with beards take them seriously… they are, after all, a part of them. But as much as they love having them, their beard maintenance can (and often is) slapdash: trim and wash as needed. Thankfully, there’s Murdock London, a British company dedicated to male descruffication. Their “How To Beard” products, from shampoos and moisturizers to nifty beard brushes will have even the die-hard unkempt looking polished – beard-wise. Info: murdocklondon.com.

TOUCHING BASE

CLASS SANS GLASS It’s something James Bond would own for those times when martinis just won’t cut it, and all the private clubs are closed for the night. The Reed & Hudson™ Leather Flask is refined without being stuffy: the mottled brown leather is ruggedly masculine, and because personalization is available (and awesome), there’s no chance 007 will scoop up yours by mistake. Your Johnny Walker Blue is safe… for now. Info: reedandbarton.com.

ETCHED TO IMPRESS Of all the potential gifts I’ve checked out this season, there’s one that took my breath away: Deejo Pocket Knives. Nothing like a multi-function Swiss Army knife, Deejo’s blade stands alone: lightweight and a work of art, available plain or “tattooed” from a jaw-dropping assortment of designs. Or customize to your own whims & passions. Ultrastrong, the knives’ handles come in various woods, colors or minimalist/naked. Info: my.deejo.fr. 16 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

It’s f i n a l l y h e r e — a universal docking station for (wait for it…) all mobile devices. I’m talking Apple, Andriod, tablets, smartwatches, stuff that hasn’t been i nv e nt e d y e t … a l l together in a one-size-fitsall charging portal thanks to the creator: udoq. And the stations are adjustable to any height to give you a solid read on your digital life. Depending on your needs there are four versions, the largest fitting up to 12 devices. Cool. Info: udoq.com.

TEAM SPIRITS

TIME HONORED

Fact is, triple-blend/ triple distilled Tull a m o r e D. E . W. Irish Whiskey is s o smo ot h and balanced that more than a few non-whiskey drinkers have become converts. That said—and avid Yankee fans may want to stop reading here—Tu l l amore is the Official Irish Whiskey of the Boston Red Sox and at the moment it’s being offered in a Boston Red Sox Limited Edition bottle. The perfect offering to a Red Sox fan (there are some in NYC) or as a friendly nudge to a World Series survivor. Info: tullamoredew.com.

With so many watches to choose from it’s nice to find an eye-catching style that works for all kinds of men. I can see college students loving this timepiece as much as their grandfathers. It’s o f f i c i a l l y called the Jefferson Multi Black Watch and its attractive looks are enhanced by practicality since its features include a world clock and date on the face as well as a multi-function movement. Most excellent. Info: luckybrand.com.

IT’S SHOE TIME!

WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK

And you thought sneakers were the only shoes out there. Sorry to disappoint, but Wolf & Shepherd’s extensive dress wear collection of wingtips, monkstraps, loafers and chelsea boots were created by former athlete Justin Schneider who clearly took his cue for comfort from his sneaker-wearing days, using proprietary running shoe technology in his designs. Shown here is, the Closer, a classic oxford lace-up with a burnished cap toe. No more hightops at weddings: win-win. wolfandshepherd.com.

It’s the Rolls Royce of dude chairs custom made for a soothing sit down session après workout or game with the guys. Simultaneously targeting the back and the glutes, this aptly named Back and Glute Massaging Chair, simulates a first-rate therapeutic hands-on massage—only unlike a massage therapist you control the rollers and nodes for a customized experience. It even features a USB charging port. The ultimate… plus its scoop design is amazing. Info: hammacher.com.

FOR HER PURPLE HAZE Glam, but not too glam; edgy, but not over the top. Just the most striking sunglasses I’ve chanced upon and, okay, coveted. TRAVELER by TOMS Zuma Matte Smoke Lilac— who knew the outdoors would look so cool bathed in lavender? Extra pliable because of their special SOLAFLEX construction (great for me and others who are relentlessly tough on eyewear) and featuring 100% UVA/UVB protection. Info: toms.co.

FLOWER POWER Quintessentially sophisticated, layering lush white flowers—lily of the valley, gardenia, tuberose and jasmine—Hope Eau de Parfum, Body Crème and Scented Candles have a fresh, nuanced quality that captures the spirit of its namesake. Worth noting: 100 percent of the company’s net profit goes to the Hope for Depression Research Foundation. Also check out the backstory—and the uplifting products. Info: opefragrancesint.com.

WRAP ARTIST

KISS KISS

How nice to get the absolute perfect gift: no hints; no demands. Someone just knew. For all its luminous beauty (the print was inspired by 18th century Indian linen), Spell & the Gypsy’s Oasis Maxi Kimono has a versatility that can take it from poolside to boudoir to statement-hostess-withbodysuit-and-stilettoes. The company even suggests it go grunge –preferably over a torn tee and distressed jeans. Make it happen. Info: shop.spelldesigns.com.

For the mistletoe minded: ECRU New York’s Velvet Air Lipsticks in ten killer shades including my picks for the New Year, Plumberry and Mullberry. This line not only gets you Lady Gaga pucker perfect, it follows my personal must-have guidelines: gluten and paraben free; lightweight, glides on smoothly; long lasting. And there’s an added perk as well: if you swipe your finger across your lips, the satin finish transforms to matte. ecrunewyork.com

STYLE TO BOOT

SLEEK UNLIMITED

THE BOLD STANDARD

When I discovered Arcopedico footwear it was like finding a soul mate…sole mate? Either way, that’s saying something since my feet are, to put it kindly, challenged. But this company, founded in Portugal, has given my feet arch support, unprecedented comfort and ontrend good looks. There are many designs, but shown are their burgundy Runa Boots, simply because they’re guaranteed to steal the show at holiday get-togethers. simcofootwear.com

Practical presents may raise a few millennial eyebrows (we won’t go into the 1998 fiasco when Dad surprised Mom with a vacuum cleaner), but occasionally something super savvy appears on the scene and rules go out the window. Luminessair BodyShaver with its 36-blade fullbody technology tackles the body’s every curve and contour. Perfection personified no shaving cream needed. Oh yes, it also makes a most attractive traveling companion. luminessair.com

Whether they’re shooting daggers or letting love shine through, eyes have a lot to say and it’s our job to help them say it with uncompromising panache. To turn them yuletide sultry I recommend tapping into BBROWBAR London Shooting Stars Collection: Smokey Kajal Liner, Ultimate Arch Definer and new Eye Wonder Colour Stick. Starry packaging makes them ready to slip into your BFF’s Christmas stocking. Info:net-a-porter.com.

FROM KICKLINES TO KEEPSAKES

A RELAXING EXPERIENCE

I know how jaded New Yorkers can seem when it comes to The Radio City Christmas Spectacular – even though they secretly harbor fond personal memories, especially of the Rockettes. So it’s not surprising their razzle-dazzle served as inspiration for PANDORA Jewelry’s Radio City Music Hall Charm & Ceramic Box and 2018 Exclusive Holiday Charm and Ornament Gift Set (shown). To share and wear! pandora.net.

For the Spa Lover on your list, here’s an extraordinary treasure. Yes, good things do come in small boxes. Take the Lux Box from The Holistic Home Co., which is handmade, multi-purpose, and a forever vessel. The decorative cement box comes with 20 sticks of hand rolled, non-toxic incense. The lid conveniently flips to be used as a incense holder on the Lotus side. When not in use, turn the lid over and a oneof-a-kind crystal can be admired. Available in stone or black. SUSTAINABLE FASHION

CHANGING YOUR STYLE—AND THE WORLD By Amanda Singh, Founder of Jean Franklin

he words “sustainable,” “eco-friendly,” and “green” may feel like they’re everywhere these days. But how can an abstract marketing term like sustainable fashion become something more than a hashtag on Instagram that we can all apply to our daily routines and busy lives? Let’s start with the goal of sustainable fashion: to transform the fashion industry so that it can be supported in a closed loop that reuses and recycles materials without harmful impact on the environment or the people who make the clothing. So how do we take this very ambitious goal for an industry that is one of the most polluting and has major human rights issues and make this applicable to each of us?

GO QUALITY

THE RECYCLE APPROACH

A good rule of thumb is to start before you even purchase. Ask yourself how many times you will wear this. Chances are if you’d wear it at least 30 times, it’s probably a keeper and something you’ll wear quite frequently. Transitioning to a more sustainable way of shopping is about finding pieces you love and will wear for a long time. It’s in stark contrast to buying throw-away pieces that may be out of style quickly or aren’t made to last, otherwise known as “fast” fashion.

Purchasing clothing made from deadstock (surplus fabric created and unused by other fashion brands) or recycled materials is eco-friendly as well. Similar to shopping second hand or vintage, using deadstock fabric and trim (thread, buttons, zippers, etc.) repurposes materials that have already been produced. Jean Franklin, the womenswear line that I founded takes this approach. We source deadstock materials and recycled thread to create beautiful new pieces with existing waste materials. Since there are limited amounts of deadstock fabrics, brands like Jean Franklin create limited edition fabric options for the styles If you live in a smaller space or older building you probably that we create. This makes the piece you purchase even more unique, have a limited closet space. By buying fewer pieces made of a knowing that sometimes we can only make a limited amount in the higher quality, it allows you to have a clean, simplified space for same fabric. all of your favorite pieces. MADE TO ORDER How the clothing is made and in what quantities is also essential to consider. I chose to build a business by creating clothing that is made to order. What this means is that we don’t make a piece until the client places an order. We do this to reduce waste in production. A considerable percentage of clothing never gets purchased, sometimes it’s donated, sometimes sent to outlets, and other times just destroyed. Made to order does require a little more wait time to receive your piece, but it is made for each customer, and unless we run out of fabric, your size will never be sold out. Remember that sustainable shopping begins with thinking about how your clothes are made. What you purchase can have a positive impact on the environment and the people who make your clothes. AUSTRALIA’S WILD SIDE ADVENTURES OFF THE BEATEN PATH By Jenny Peters

reaming of an escape to a place where eco-adventures await, all wrapped in a blanket of dry, warm sunshine? Then it’s time to start planning a getaway journey to the Land Down Under, where exotically beautiful wild places abound, spots with names that English speakers may mangle a bit, like Kakadu, Purnululu and Ningaloo. Those Aboriginal names mark places that it usually takes visitors to Australia a while to see, as most first-time vacationers naturally gravitate toward the Eastern part of the country—the famed cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the tropical splendor of Queensland, where the Great Barrier Reef awaits. All wonderful in their unique ways, those places have likely been the ones you have seen if you’ve visited this magical, massive island nation.

THE NORTHERN TERRITORY Experience Oz’s incredible, yet lesser known, natural wonders in Darwin, in the state called The Northern Territory, the state capitol that serves as the gateway to wonderfully wild places. The dry season, from April to November, is the time to visit, to avoid the monsoon rains that drench the area in the other months and make many places impassible. Get fortified for the coming adventures at Darwin’s lively waterfront area, where convivial restaurants like Wharf One offer fresh local fare fished from the Timor Sea and gorgeous views, too. EXPLORE Just an hour or two east by car from Darwin, Kakadu National Park is cited a UNESCO World Heritage natural site (one of many found in Australia), with two huge waterfalls—Jim Jim and Twin Falls—that are at their best in April and May, as well as numerous walking trails, billabongs (seasonal ponds) and much more to see. Watch for crocodiles, snakes and other slippery creatures as you explore these protected lands. 32 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

Katkadu National Park

Even more remote and less populated is Arnhem Land, a dry season destination that brings you up close to a place that has barely changed since its original Aboriginal inhabitants arrived 50,000 years ago. The region’s traditional owners once again have claimed this place, where rock paintings done using red ochre in those ancient times by the Amardak people are still as vibrant as the moment they were created. Make Davidson’s Eco Lodge your home base by flying in from Darwin and you’ll soon marvel at this otherworldly outpost. Flocks of birds skim the water-drenched floodplain (which later in the season becomes walkable), both saltwater and freshwater crocodiles relax on the rocks by a nearby waterfall and rock wallabies boing-boing up cliff sides with effortless ease. Go fishing, hiking and even take a dip in a protected natural pool without the fear of a croc nibbling your toes. The lodge is filled with incredibly welcoming people, most of whom are part of the family that has been allowed to show lucky visitors this magical place for over 50 years. And the food is terrific, too.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Bungle Bungle Range by Jenny Peters

For more incredible wilderness experiences, hop on a quick small-plane flight from Darwin and head to Kununurra, on the edge of Western Australia. That vast state encompasses nearly one million square miles; here at the very top edge are some beautifully breathtaking places to see, in an area called the Kimberley. EXPLORE El Questro Wilderness Park is a dry 700,000-acre protected place that features vast outback plains as well as deep gorges, high sandstone hills, huge baobab trees and even a waterfall or two. And while the park offers everything from campsites to simple bungalows, this is the place to splurge a bit and experience The Homestead. That five-star, nine-room all-inclusive resort is perched high on a cliff above the Chamberlain Gorge; look carefully down into the water, and you’re sure to spot a massive crocodile meandering along. Go on a guided bushwalk and learn all about the history, fauna and flora of this endlessly fascinating place, take a cruise in the river gorge (keeping hands and arms in the boat!) and climb up to Zebedee Thermal Springs for a swim in a secluded waterhole that’s too remote for crocodile (or other human) companions. Even more remote than El Questro is Purnululu National Park, another UNESCO World Heritage site and the home of the wackiest rock formations you’ve ever seen. Known as the Bungle Bungles, these striped sandstone beehive-like hills cover the landscape, many leading to huge gorges carved out of the soft rock by centuries of erosion. It’s a fantasyland of incredible sights, including Cathedral Gorge, a red-rock amphitheater that takes a slightly strenuous hike to see but is worth every step. Warble like a bird there and your chirps will echo to the sky. Make the extra effort to get to Ningaloo Reef, on the northwest tip of Western Australia. There, where the Indian Ocean delivers clear blue waters to the sandy shores, you’ll find an undersea heaven that’s yet another Australian UNESCO site. Snorkel with whale sharks (April to July) swim alongside migrating humpback whales (July to October) and explore the coral reefs all year round, diving with manta rays, sea turtles, moray eels, sharks and more via Exmouth Diving Centre. Find pristine beaches like Turquoise Bay and Mauritius Beach, and stay at the magnificent Sal Salis Resort, where beachfront glamping tents put you steps away from the ocean waves crashing nearby. It’s a dream of a place, so don’t be surprised if your stay at Ningaloo causes you to feel at one with nature, sea, sun, and sky. In fact, you may find your Zen there and never want to leave, after having a similar feeling at each of the wild places you’ve visited earlier. So be it Ningaloo that makes your heart sing, or maybe Purnululu, El Questro, Kakadu, Arnhem Land or every single stop along this far-flung adventure, one thing is sure. You’ve just experienced some of Australia’s most magical places, and ones that even most native Aussies have not yet ventured out to see. CHARLEVOIX, QUEBEC AN EASY GETAWAY TO THE NORTH By Sherry Amatenstein

n Charlevoix, the almost decadently scenic region 90 miles northeast of Quebec City, the 30,000 locals take unceasing delight in their surroundings. Not surprising, since the cozy resort town that hosted the G7 Summit attended by the world’s leaders last June, and which President William Howard Taft once described as “intoxicating like champagne without the next day’s hangover” actually saw the creation of Cirque du Soleil in the early 1980s from a ragtag band of colorful street entertainers called Les Echassiers de-Baie-Saint-Paul (the Baie-Saint-Paul Stiltwalkers). While Cirque has of course morphed into a company of performers who have enthralled over 50 million around the globe, the perennial Champagne fizz in the Charlevoix air has led to quirky sights and pleasures that can’t help but lift the spirits of visitors. That Charlevoix, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1989, is delightfully odd is befitting of a region that began 300 million years ago when a random meteor dropped out of the sky gorging a tremendous hole in the earth along the St. Lawrence River.

WHAT TO SEE & DO Omerto Visit the ‘vineyard’ and tasting room of the world’s first and only tomato wine. In 1998 Pascal Miche, a onetime Belgium pork butcher moved to Charlevoix to continue developing his great-grandfather’s recipe for wine created from special varietals of heirloom tomatoes. An Omerto cocktail, The C obbler infused with rosemary syrup, was served at the G7 Summit after another Omerto cocktail, the Molotov, was rejected due to its violent name! An Omerto Cocktail

Flavour Trail While winter eliminates a few of the region’s abundant charms (i.e.: we’re talking about you, whale watching!), happily food is an all-weather activity. Charlevoix has cooked up a creative way to showcase its artisanal cheeses, foie gras, ciders, craft beers, duck, organic meats and other fabulous regional edible offerings. The Flavour Trail, comprised of 40 local growers, producers and restaurateurs, offers a gastronomic journey down the sometimes rugged terrain from Petite-Riviere-Saint-Francois to La Malbaie. The participants (Miche among them) love sharing their stories. Clearly you would need days to sample every stop on the trail, but one standout, attached to the fabulous cheese shop Famille Migneron Le Chenil du Sportif de Charlevoix (set to begin selling vodka made from the whey byproduct of their cheese production). Don’t miss Faux Bergers run by the husband and wife team Sylvain Dervieux and Emile Tremblay, this intimate restaurant eliminates the stress of deciding which delectable dish to order. Instead of a menu there is a chef ’s choice six-course repast. Info: tourisme-charlevoix.com/en/ what-to-do/routes-and-circuits/flavour-trail. Winter Attractions In 2002 Cirque du Soleil co-founder Daniel Gauthier traded pratfalls for state parks, purchasing and modernizing a ski resort now called Le Massif de Charlevoix. The resort already had a stunning location overlooking the St. Lawrence River and at 2,526 feet the highest vertical drop east of the Rockies, plus an annual powdery snowfall of 236 inches. In addition to the superlative skiing (including off trail), Le Massif de Charlevoix has offbeat Gauthier touches such as ice skating trails and “rodeling”—a 4.6 mile sled trail—the third longest in the world reaching speeds of 50 mph. Info: lemassif.com/en. If you like canoodling with canines, Le Chenil du Sportif offers from half day to three day dog sledding excursions. After the “harnessing ceremony” accompanied by much yipping and tail wagging, your excited husky drivers offer a four woof-rated experience. Info: chenildusportif.com.

WHERE TO STAY

Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu

Naturally, Charlevoix boasts hotels that offer unique experiences. Here, some favorites. Le Germain Charlevoix Hotel and Spa Want to look out your oversized window and watch sheep? Commune with Highland cattle, mulard and B ar b ar y du ck s, white pigs, and then visit a Honey House with 15 beehives? Then the luxurious 145-room Le Germain Hotel and Spa, comprised of five urban style pavilions in the heart of Baie-St-Paul, is perfect for you. Once a wooden farmhouse belonging to a religious congregation (check out the fabulous miniature replication of the original complex, replete with miniature cows, ducks and nuns), The Germain has a full-service spa perfect for snowy afternoons, ski train to Le Massif, outdoor skating rink and roaring campfires in the on-site public square—yes, the latter activity includes star gazing. The restaurants on-site serve ingredients fresh from the organic garden, with Les Labors vast kitchen, open on all four sides allowing diners to watch their inventive meals being created! The accommodations range from suites and lofts to bunk beds dormitory style—all upscale—with the coziest down pillows and comforters to lull even an insomniac to sleep. Info: legermainhotels.com. Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu It’s no wonder the 5-star Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu in Malbaie was chosen as the site of the G7 summit. Prepare for a jaw dropping moment at the approach to this commanding 405-room French style castle perched between the St. Lawrence River and the Laurentian Mountains. After walking up a winding staircase to the lobby entrance, guests are greeted by Roux, the resort’s 3-year-old Canine Ambassador. Trained by the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind in Ottawa, the Golden Labrador Retriever has business cards and if his schedule isn’t booked, appointments are available with Roux at the concierge. Then rent snowmobiles, take a sleigh ride, snow shoe to the top of the resort’s world-renowned golf course, ice fish (the good-natured staff will cut a hole in the ice!), play hockey or ice skate on an outdoor rink, enjoy easy access to nearby skiing, later soothe your sore muscles at the Moment Spa, enjoy a drink in the heated outdoor pool and/or dine at Le Charlevoix Restaurant, which won Wine Spectator’s 2017 Award of Excellence. Indulgence in paradise with a touch of Charlevoix idiosyncrasies is the Fairmont’s policy. Info: fairmont.com/richelieu-charlevoix. PALM BEACH A CULTURAL ODYSSEY By Michael Alpiner

am sitting in the passenger seat of a luxury car being driven through a luxury landscape, a staccato curtain of palm trees with a crystal blue landscape, winding roads past majestic homes, and the luxury of silence. The quiet is broken by the informative narration from Bama Lutes Deal, Ph.D., a musicologist and member of Americans for the Arts. Bama is also the newly appointed Cultural Concierge of the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County. With seven miles of beaches, a 55-year-old opera company and over 42,000 cultural events produced every year, Palm Beach County is not just about Mar-a-Lago. Seafood Tower DAY ONE As a weekend with Bama showed our group, Palm Beach is Florida’s cultural capital, a vibrant county with five unique arts districts: West Palm Beach, Lake Park, Lake Worth, Boynton Beach and Delray Beach. Our immersive journey into Palm Beach’s cultural communities began with a lazy late afternoon visit to the Morikami Museum & Gardens, a traditionally Japanese landscaped garden that has been interpreted with local, lush tropical plants. The Morikami was created by a local Japanese businessman who wanted to fuse the beauty of Florida’s indigenous plants with the rigorous attention to detail, grace and balance of Japanese landscaping. In addition to the serene atmosphere, one can calm the hunger pangs with traditional Japanese fare in the accompanying outdoor restaurant. As the Florida day escaped us (after watching local turtles sunning themselves at the Morikami and looking at local art at the Cornell Art Museum at Explore School Square, housed in a vintage Florida schoolhouse) we ended the day at one of Palm Beach’s cultural gems, The Norton Museum of Art, Florida’s largest museum now being extended with British architect Norman Foster’s multi-million dollar expansions. The museum’s Art After Dark program was in full swing. Palm Beach locals were gathered in the museum’s Art Deco atrium creating watercolors while sipping rosé wine and listening to the sultry strains of a jazz trio. My haven for the night was Eau, the huge and palatial hotel complex renamed and rebranded from its earlier incarnation as The Ritz-Carlton. The Eau is fronted with a shell-strewn beach, perfect for wading, swimming or sunning and a beachfront bar and restaurant which makes the ideal perching place for breakfast and Bloody Mary’s, or those immense tropical cocktails served in coconuts. Upstairs my room also fronted the water, with interior decor by the noted designer Jonathan Adler. I spent many contemplative moments swaying gently in the hammock chair upon the veranda which looked out to the vast Atlantic seascape. 36 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

DAY TWO The next day, Bama took us to the Norton’s sister museum, The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, where the steel magnate’s second wife had her sculpture studio, another lush tropical garden of rare palm trees, and local plants. Along the path through the tropical overgrowth, Norton’s monolithic sculptures met us with their abstract messages of motherhood and portals through a life well-lived. We also drove into the grounds of the majestic Flagler Museum, once the home of Henry Flagler, one of the founders of modern Florida and the railway millionaire who built tracks that once stretched all the way to Key West. The interior of Flagler’s home is as fantastic as his business acumen—all gilded and marbleized with faux Renaissance detailing and a full-size railway car once used by the baron of the rails, installed in one of the galleries. Ornate décor with a keen attention to detail and extravagance met us at every threshold. Rare furnishings and artifacts from around the world inspire even the most modest visitor to go home and redecorate his/her living space. The modern incarnation of Flagler’s tracks now form the new Brightline Railway (actually laid on the original tracks). The high speed train connects Miami to Palm Beach with new extensions in the works. The Brightline Station offers travelers all the comforts one would expect from Palm Beach: cushioned seats in the waiting area, equipped with USB ports for recharging, and a trendylooking snack and drink kiosk, also for recharging of a sort. We then went with Bama on a walking tour of West Palm Beach’s vibrant street art scene with local guide, Ashley Capps. Palm Beach is actually one of the many sites of the new Street Art Revolution, which is filling public spaces with beauty and often political statements. Dinner was at nearby Sant Ambroeus, an Italian restaurant with the motto is “From Italy, With Love,” and they were not exaggerating. All the food was prepared with affection and attention to maintaining that Old World flavor for the modern discerning patron. From Margherita Pizza to Arrabbiata, the tastes were as melodic as the cadence of the Italian accents that emerged while ordering. Sant Ambroeus

The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens

DAY THREE The next day we dove into some of the Palm Beaches marine culture with a visit to the Loggerhead Marine Life Center, where recovering sea turtles were being nursed back to health after sustaining injury, like veterans of an environmental war. We walked to the top of scenic Jupiter Lighthouse and then chilled with margaritas at the U Tiki Restaurant where a brown pelican viewing had this birdwatcher thrilled with delight. Bama rounded out our journey to the cultural delights of Palm Beach with a visit to the late Burt Reynolds’ brainchild, the renovated and restored and vastly expanded Jupiter Theatre. The Theatre has morphed into one of Florida’s largest and most prestigious regional theaters on the circuit. A performance by young hopefuls made it clear the Reynolds’ legacy here was not just Smokey and the Bandit. Our last supper was at Cafe Boulud which is a stone’s throw from Worth Street (Palm Beach’s answer to Fifth Avenue) and the white sandy shoreline. This French-inspired menu uses the best local ingredients and the benefit from Chef Daniel Boulud’s worldwide travels to create a taste sensation. Paired with a glass from a quality wine selection, I almost redefined what I imagine true luxury dining is all about. My return home was bittersweet. I was heading to New York, and the endless excitement and sleepless city streets, but there was a certain light still burning bright within me with shadows sliced by the memory of palm leaves, and languid thoughts flapping past like the rhythmic wings of pelicans. TRAVEL

THE BERNARDS INN A NEW JERSEY GEM By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva

oes the thought of exploring a boutique hotel featuring a quintessential luxury restaurant sound enticing to you? If so, all it takes is a one-hour train ride from Penn Station to the quaint hamlet of Bernardsville, New Jersey, where The Bernards Inn will welcome you to a bygone era of understated elegance. For more than a century The Bernards Inn has provided guests with exceptional experiences. Today, the inn is a Forbes Travel Guide recommended property with the style and elegance of a small European luxury hotel.

A BIT OF HISTORY The Bernards Inn has a long and storied history since it first opened in 1907. Construction of the inn began in 1905 using stone from an old stable located on Main Street. Some of this stone can still be seen in the foundation visible in the wine cellar. Additionally, many items including mirrors, mantels, and the components of the lobby staircase, which still exists today, were culled from the original Hotel Plaza in New York City. In addition to being the town’s first venue for moving pictures, the inn welcomed some famous motion picture stars, such as Mary Pickford. Following several years of successful operation as a hotel and restaurant, The Bernards Inn fell victim to the effects of Prohibition in 1920 and suffered a substantial drop-off in business. However, in one aspect the inn did continue to be successful—albeit as one of Bernardsville’s four illegal “speakeasies,” experiencing police raids on more than one occasion. A decade later, the inn experienced a dramatic change from two fires purported to be set by a man being held in the police department’s detention room, which was housed in the same building. The section of the inn that was destroyed was never rebuilt. For the next several decades the inn would change hands and go through a variety of décor and architectural changes, as well as a name change—the Widow Brown’s Inn. Thankfully, in 1972, new owners renamed it The Bernards Inn. It was during the ownership period of Alice and George Rochat, from 1985 to 2002, that The Bernards Inn earned its reputation as a top choice for fine dining and luxurious accommodations, garnering numerous dining and hotelier awards including the AAA Four-Diamond. Today, under the ownership of Hampshire Destination Properties and the creative culinary direction of Executive Chef Todd Mark Miller, The Bernards Inn is now in its second century of providing outstanding hospitality and culinary experiences with a gracious and refined elegance. 42 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

ELEGANT SURROUNDINGS The new décor and architectural details of the property and updated rooms, designed with pastoral-themed oil paintings and beautiful antiques, are reminiscent of the magnificent estate homes of the Somerset Hills. A number of the rooms are named for these estates, such as Overleigh, Mayfield, and Claremont. Inn accommodations include the Historic Suites, each with a spacious sitting room; Historic Deluxe Rooms, all offering generously-sized rooms; or Historical Superior Rooms. What is also enticing about the inn is its location in the town of Bernardsville, which is in the heart of the picturesque Somerset Hills countryside. There are numerous opportunities to explore, engage, or relax and enjoy a quiet stroll in one of the area’s beautiful estate gardens.

SPECIAL PACKAGED STAYS The inn offers a variety of package plans designed to give guests a chance to experience the picturesque Somerset Hills and enjoy the elegant atmosphere of this beautiful inn. • Seasonal Dining includes an overnight stay in one of the Inn’s twenty smartly-appointed guest rooms with award-winning Progressive American cuisine and wine center stage for these epicurean escapes. Chef Miller presents a seasonally-inspired Four-Course Tasting Menu paired with exceptional wines. (A Six-Course Tasting Dinner is available as an upgrade.) • Fall Feast is available through December 20th. After feasting on Chef Miller’s gourmet creations, it is easy to see why the New York Times distinguished the Inn as the Best Fresh and Local restaurant while Zagat’s calls it One of NJ’s Best gourmet restaurants. You will be equally impressed by Chef Miller’s menu favorites like Roasted Lobster with Baby Bok Choy, Skirt Steak Frites, and his delicious Blue Lump Crab Cake. Two very popular appetizers are the Yellowfin Tuna Flatbread and the Creole Oysters. • Bed & Breakfast is an excellent opportunity to choose from a long list to add your own touch. Amenities like White Petal Turndown, Celebratory Cake for Two, Picnic Bag for Two, wine flights, craft beer tasting, Grand Mariner and chocolates, is just a start! Be sure to check the inn’s website for a description of the many other package plans available. Not to be missed is the Library Bar, where mixologist Claudineia Bock meticulously prepares many of her creative libations’ ingredients by hand. With a vast array of in-house infusions, hand-crafted bitters, and special purees and reductions. Bock brings many unique twists to some classic cocktail recipes. The menu features some enticing delicacies such as Thai Fries and a Duck Reuben.

EXPLORE AND ENJOY As inviting as the inn’s accommodations and restaurant may be, you may want to get out and explore some of the Somerset Hills attractions. Golfers can visit the nearby United States Golf Association Museum. Nature lovers can enjoy a variety of estate gardens, wildlife sanctuaries, and historical parks such as Natirar, The Leonard J. Buck Garden, Duke Farms, The Cross Estate Gardens, and The Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary NJ Audubon Society. With so many local attractions and events, The Bernards Inn is a perfect nearby getaway any time of the year. For information on even more area attractions or details about The Bernards Inn visit bernardsinn.com. • HOLIDAY EDITION | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 43

BITS & BAILEY

NEWS, VIEWS & THE LATEST HAPPENINGS By Bailey Beckett

elcome to the first Bits & Bailey, a monthly who’s who and what’s what in the Big Apple, all through the glossy, perfectly-lit, soft lens of yours truly. As a bon vivant in every sense of the term, I’ve been chronicling the have and have-mores for 20 years, and I’ll be giving readers an inside glimpse into that rarefied world. So … grab your passport and pack the Goyard, this journey is just getting started. A TOAST WITH THE MOST The world’s most glamorous hotel, the Hotel Plaza Athenee Paris has long been a love nest for discriminating New Yorkers. And now there’s another reason to gas up the G5 and go into the (city of) light. The palace-ranked hotel is getting cozy with Dom Perignon to showcase a collection of its White and Rosé Champagnes—Vintage P2 and P3 Magnum, Jeroboam and Mathusalem—in a custom glass display case exclusive to the hotel’s famous Le Bar. Designed by Nicolas Francart, the installation will run three years and offer guests a peek at its most revered vintages, like the P2 (Second Plénitude—16 years of elaboration) and P3 (Third Plénitude—more than 25 years of elaboration) Champagnes. The most expensive—a steal at just $150,000—is its vaunted Jeroboam with a silver cover. The entire selection can only be savored at the Plaza, naturally. LIGHTS! (NO) CAMERAS! (ALLOWED) ISAAC! Anyone who has ever seen Unzipped, the 1995 documentary about fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi, knows the designer is an outrageous talent whose skills extend way beyond the catwalk. Witness his one-person show at Café Carlyle, the entertainment mecca nestled elegantly inside the historic hotel. After two sold-out schedules last year, he’s bringing the cabaret act back for an encore with Isaac Mizrahi: Queen Size. From February 5th through 16th, the designer will again wax poetic about love and life with a set that mixes classics (Leonard Bernstein, Cat Stevens, Jimmy Webb, John Kander, Cole Porter, James Taylor, and Jerome Kern), wry commentary and a heavy dose of comedy. He joked during his last run that his recent weight gain is the fault of the Trump administration and that every time he sees Sarah Huckabee Sanders, “that’s a pint of ice cream,” Last year’s shows were huge hits. The New York Times noted “he is determined to challenge the cultural status quo and help blaze a path… his Café Carlyle engagement is a big deal” while Vogue called it “the hottest ticket at New York Fashion Week.” Info: cafecarlylenewyork.com.

HOLIDAY TREATS For centuries, Baccarat has created masterpieces for royal households throughout the world, and this holiday its tony New York hotel honors that legacy with tea services as they might have been held in palaces from St. Petersburg to Bangalore. Pairing its menus with worldrenowned Mariage Frères teas certainly evokes that majesty. And it gets more magical with two enchanted holiday servings this season in its opulent second-floor lounge. The T’was the Night Before Christmas experience includes savories like Croque Monsieur Gruyere, Holiday Stuffing, Butternut Squash Tart, Foie Gras and Roasted Turkey, as well as delicious sweets like Spiced Chocolate Cherry Buche de Noel, early Grey Religieuse, Rosé Macarons, Sugar Plum Cake, Raspberry Rolls, Lemon Honey Vol Au Vent, and Spiced Pear Gelée. For the kiddies, the Le Petit Prince is serving Napoleon of Pears and Brie, Cranberry Muffins, Banana Bread, Spiced Cupcakes, and a Chocolate Brownie Tree. It’s a spirited way to enjoy the Christmas spirit, for sure! Info: baccarathotels.com. 50 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

ON THE MAR(CUS) One of the best parts of the season is seeing what outrageous Fantasy Gifts Neiman Marcus features in their holiday catalog. This year’s offerings include being a VIP Guest of 2017 U.S. Open Champion Sloane Stephens at all four major tournaments (Melbourne, Paris, London, and NYC); and a Custom Candy Bar with one million pieces of Sugarfina candy. My favorite, however, is a Secret Agent Experience in Las Vegas. Neiman Marcus will fly you and four friends to Sin City via private jet for a three-day, two-night espionage adventure organized by The Invictus Experience. Upon landing, you’ll be greeted by a mysterious man in a tux who will hand over an envelope containing your assigned mission profile—and the fun will begin with a team of elite and decorated Special Operations Forces veterans. FOOD CYCLER

MEURAL

Food Waste Recycler One of the big social issues to gain steam this year has been the issue of the amount of food waste we generate as a society, both as a consequence of sell-by dates and labeling as well as consumer preferences. Why not transform your food scraps—cooked and uncooked—into a beneficial addition to your garden? Some may turn their nose up at the idea of a composter however this new Food Cycler recycler takes just three hours to dehydrate food scrapes and reduce the volume by about 90 percent. Add it to your soil outside, and with some water and time for the byproduct (your incredibly shrunken leftovers) to decompose, it’ll release micro-nutrients that help plants grow. Info: nofoodwaste.com.

Gesture Controlled Digital Art Frame Remember the early, clunky digital picture frames which were a great concept but looked more like a laptop? This digital picture frame does not even look digital—it has an image resolution and picture display quality that is much more lifelike and beautiful. The sophisticated matte finish and statement size make it museum-worthy and elegant. Meural lets you show off your own photos or famous works of art (over 30,000 historic paintings are included). You can change the artwork any time you like via an app or through gesture control. The ambient internal sensor regulates the display to create an ideal, antiglare image and you can reduce your carbon footprint traveling to the museum on a cold day this winter. Info: meural.com.

REAL ESTATE & YOUR HOME

AROUND TOWN THE FLATIRON DISTRICT By TJ Johnson

he Flatiron District of NYC: the middle of Manhattan where you have access to endless shopping and and food options. The Flatiron wasn’t always an amazing place to live. In fact, the neighborhood was slightly unsafe with nightclubs spread throughout the district. However, over the last 20 years, those nightclubs turned into an amazing array of top-rated restaurants, trendy boutiques, and fitness emporiums. Now that the Flatiron District is such a sought after place to live and conduct business, real estate has gained incredible value, making the purchase of a loft in the area one of the best investments. Just walking around this part of the city, you feel that New York City drive. The area seems to have an ability to boost your energy levels.

Flatiron Building

The Flatiron District received its name because of The Flatiron Building, originally named the Fuller Building; this triangular 22-story, 285foot tall, steel-framed landmark is located at and considered to be a groundbreaking skyscraper. Upon completion in 1902, it was one of the tallest buildings in the city. It’s an absolute beautiful building that everyone seems to want to take a picture in front of, tourists and locals alike.

LOOKING YOUR BEST Speaking of locals, if you are the type of person that needs cycling to make your day complete, there is a SoulCycle Studio located on 19th Street between 5thand 6th Avenues. But it’s so much more than just a workout — it’s a powerful mind-body experience. Coached by an expert team, you’ll reach your personal best. If you prefer to work out with weights and do cardio, I would recommend Complete Body also located on 19th Street. It’s a very low-key gym and celebrities have been known to frequent the gym to maintain a low profile. One of the best fitness programs is headed up by Francisco Liuzzi (@innervationfitness). No matter what your fitness goal is, Francisco will get you there! I know from personal experience. If an Equinox gym is more your speed, then there’s one located on 897 Broadway. Whatever your fitness needs may be, if you live in the Flatiron District it will only be a short walk away. HOLIDAY EDITION | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 57

FOOD FOR THOUGHT This area is a wonderful place to try cuisine from up-and-coming chefs. Of course, there are plenty of old favorites as well. Here, some of my picks you’ll definitely enjoy. • Hwaban is a traditional and contemporary Korean restaurant where talented chefs join forces to incorporate creative and modern approaches to Korean cuisine. Delicate and bold authentic Korean dishes are elegantly presented to accentuate the beauty of the restaurant. • We can’t discuss the Flatiron District without including Eataly. The food quality and taste is out of this world. Whether you just want to shop around, buy food to take home and have a romantic dinner, or if you want to eat out, it is a must. Located at 200 Fifth Avenue, it can get crowded but is well-worth it. As Zagat reviewed it’s “a high temple of la dolce vita.” • While Korean food and Italian are always a great choice, sometimes you need comfort food like barbecue. Hill Country BBQ is good old-fashioned restaurant on West 26th Street. With some great music and a fun Texas atmosphere, it’s a great place to eat comfort food and have a good time. The beef brisket is the best.

Flatiron District 35 West 15th St.

LUXURY LIVING If you’re moving to New York City and want to be in the center of everything and feel that “mover and shaker” vibe, then the Flatiron District is the place for you. • 15 Union Square West which was once the headquarters of Tiffany & Company has been converted into a luxurious condominium building. With views of the one and only Union Square Park, this tower of glass has 36 residences across 12 floors. Apartments within 15 Union Square West have incredible 16-foot ceilings. Windows are arched and oversized, spanning from the top of the paneled ceilings down to the hard wood floors. You’ll find gas fireplaces constructed within the apartments and beautiful open gourmet kitchens, custom-designed claw-foot bathtubs and stainless steel appliances. Residents will be offered valet parking services. Other amenities include a 50 foot lap pool with a state-of-the-art fitness center. 15 Union Square West is offering 1, 2, 3, and 5 bedrooms residences. One bedrooms start at $2.7 million while 5 bedrooms begin at $12 million. • Another notable new development with amazing windows and views in The Flatiron District is the 35 XV (35 West 15th)! It’s a new 25 story luxury apartment building located at 35 West 15th St. This postwar high-rise has 58 residences and a variety of two- to four-bedroom apartments. The building features a full-time doorman, beautiful builtin closets unbelievable bathrooms and vanities and, of course, a gourmet chef kitchen with stainless steel appliances. Starting price for 2 bedrooms is $3.3 million. MAYKNOLL ESTATE

A GRAND MANOR WITH A SENSE OF HISTORY By David A. Patten

ealed bids are now being accepted for the purchase of a truly unique mansion and compound overlooking Hempstead Harbor in Roslyn Harbor, New York—and it’s only fitting that the sale of the property, locally known as “Mayknoll,” is a bit secretive. all, the stunning 8.2-acre waterfront A SPECIAL PLACE

After property, located on Long Island less than an hour’s drive from midtown Manhattan, was the longtime estate of OSS officer, presidential campaign manager, and CIA director William J. “Bill” Casey.

Gone are the 24-hour security posts manned by CIA security, but the setting still wreaks of drama. Over the years the estate drew visits from a host of celebrities including legendary OSS chief Bill Donovan, cosmetics icon Estee Lauder, and singer Diana Ross. Firing Line host and National Review founder Bill Buckley once made a dashing entrance, arriving via his sailboat.

Casey ran Ronald Reagan’s victorious 1980 presidential campaign and later served from Current owner Bernadette Casey Smith, the daughter of the late William J. and Sophia 1981 to 1987 as CIA director under the 40th Casey, has indelible memories of growing up on the expansive grounds of the estate. AN AMERICAN HERO As the 70s drew to a close, the family assumed his illustrious career was winding down, but Casey had other things in mind. “I remember the day he got the call,” recalls his daughter. “He thought he was retired. He said, ‘This country is in such a mess I have to see what I can do about it.’ He said yes, then he traveled up to New Hampshire. And then he traveled around the country for many months. But they got the job done, didn’t they?” Presidential historian Craig Shirley credits Casey as “a vastly underestimated Cold Warrior. He saw the world as Ronald Reagan did,” Shirley tells Newsmax, “divided by the goodness of the West and the evil of the East… “Casey was an American hero,” the Reagan biographer adds, “from his work with the OSS in World War II, to brilliantly managing Reagan’s 1980 campaign, to his work in developing the Vatican and Pope John Paul II to the anti-Communism alliance.”

There are still traces of the estate’s famous occupant, including the Casey Cold War library, formerly an enclosed porch. TRACES OF THE PAST Daughter Bernadette describes the manor house as “more of a European, grandiose house” with “beautiful, exquisite moldings.” The etched panes of glass are original in the manor’s pocket doors, as is the Italian terra cotta tile hallway. One stunning element: A massive chandelier obtained at auction from the ornate Capitol Theater in New York City. There are still traces of the estate’s famous occupant, including the Casey Cold War library, formerly an enclosed porch. Casey was such a voracious reader his security detail got in the habit of carrying an extra, empty duffel bag to tote all the books he would purchase during his trips. The library, once used by Casey’s CIA security guards, is home to a collection of books on history and espionage tradecraft. The home received an update in 2000 that included central air, a solarium, a spa with an endless indoor pool, and an elevator. There are reports of a secret passage in the basement of the manor house, but that might be a bit of literary license. Bernadette Casey Smith says it’s actually an old wine cellar. The sale is being handled by James Connelly, director of government relations and principal of the Washington, D.C.-based Summit Commercial Real Estate, in conjunction with James Kazunas, president, of Hollywood Real Estate Services, LLC, which will act as the administrator for the sale along with Helmsley Spear, LLC.

Connelly sees the property as an ideal compound, possibly for one of the UN delegations looking for an opportunity to escape the confines of the UN’s Turtle Bay headquarters. But because the property has multiple residences over its 8.2 acres, it could also be subdivided. Given its proximity to the city and its stunning location on Long Island’s North Shore, Connelly says, the family has opted to sell the property in a sealed bid format, without a fixed asking price, either on the full compound or individual portions. “It may not be a family. It could be a sovereign nation, or it could be a foundation,” he told the Long Island Press. Of course, it will be a rite of passage when the grand manse where great decisions were made passes into the hands of another owner. “He was a fun guy,” Bernadette Casey Smith says of her father, who was unable to witness firsthand the fulfillment of the Reagan administration’s legacy when he died in May 1987. “He was very, very special. And of course, he would never talk about his work.” As Shirley put it, “In the end, Casey was proven right—and on the right side of history.” For more information about Bill Casey’s Mayknoll Estate, text James Connelly, Summit Commercial Real Estate, LLC; 202-491-5300, or e-mail jconnelly@summitcre.com. ©2018 Newsmax. REAL ESTATE & YOUR HOME

KITCHEN MAGIC FROM DRAB TO FAB By Karoline Gore

ew York City is big on a lot of things: style, dining, entertainment, and money. One thing there is not much of, however, is space. With more than 8.6 million people calling the Big Apple home according to latest census data, it comes as no surprise that space has become a rare entity. As much as they are considered to be the heart of the home, a typical NYC kitchen is pretty cramped, regardless of whether you call The Bronx or Manhattan home. By implementing a few simple design strategies you can turn your box-sized NYC kitchen into a fabulouslystylish space that is both practical and pleasant on the eye.

OPEN SPACE

COMPACT & STYLISH

Even the most spacious of rooms seems significantly smaller and more cramped if you hoard. If your kitchen cabinets, counters, and shelves are strewn with appliances, utensils, food items and other kitchen paraphernalia it is definitely time to reorganize Once you have sifted through the disorder you can aim to open up some space by removing some of your cabinet doors and embracing the wonderful world of open shelving which can effectually get rid of the dark and restricted atmosphere in your kitchen.

Your choice in appliances can completely make or break your kitchen styling efforts. Bulky appliances may seem handy but they will cause you more harm than good. Where possible, opt for miniature versions of appliances instead of full sized ones. You may be pleasantly surprised by what is available on the market once you start shopping around. A smallersized oven, fridge, freezer, as well as cleaning-related appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines, will not only make your pint-sized kitchen look a lot bigger but will also make it a lot more efficient—both from an aesthetic and energy-saving perspective.

You will be amazed at how much bigger your kitchen will appear when you make use of a smart choice of color… 64 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

COLOR & LIGHTING You will be amazed at how much bigger your kitchen will appear when you make use of a smart choice of color and suitable lighting. A soft, neutral color with one contrasting wall can make your kitchen a lot roomier, while cool whites, beachy pastels, and warming earth tones all do wonders for a tiny room. Task and recessed lighting can brighten up a gloomy kitchen significantly while under-cabinet lighting can make even the smallest of kitchen seems a lot bigger. Where possible try to make use of energy-saving LEDs that are both immensely stylish as well as easy on your pocket. There is no reason why your small living space, and your kitchen, in particular, has to appear glum and unfashionable. By simply following the simple guidelines discussed above and coupling them with your own personal style you can easily create a highend tiny kitchen fit for even the most uppity of New Yorkers. •

MONEY MATTERS

8 STEPS TO A BUSINESS TRANSITION By Eric Czephya

t’s a new year and if you are considering transitioning out of your business at some point in the future, it pays to be strategic years before you actually engage with potential buyers. Here are some of the steps you can take to ensure that your transition will be as smooth as possible. ASSESS THE MARKETPLACE

When evaluating the market, start with your own industry, then look at the broader economic climate. Take a close look at the growth of your business—and the industry overall—to determine whether there is potential for continued growth. Make an initial list of potential buyers to consider, including family members, managers and competitors, or other businesses if you want to consider a merger.

ASSEMBLE YOUR TEAM

You likely already have certain professionals in place to guide your business, such as a CPA, an insurance agent and a wealth manager. When preparing for a transition, a tax professional, an estate planning attorney and business attorney are valuable additions to the team. Choosing one key advisor to lead the group is also advisable, to coordinate efforts and help ensure that you have the appropriate team members in place.

PREPARE YOUR BUSINESS

With your team in place, you’re ready to begin preparing your business for sale with a goal of maximizing its value. One of the first things you should do is look for any potential issues that might delay or adversely affect your sale. Have your business and personal tax returns reviewed by a professional. This is also a good time to evaluate your corporate structure. Make sure the business’s financial records and corporate documents are accurate and up to date. You should also review existing contracts for expiration dates and ensure key relationships are covered.

OBTAIN A VALUATION

Work with a business broker to conduct an informal valuation of your business. Often, you can get an estimate or a range of probable sales prices early in the process, which will give you an idea of the value and allow some time to make adjustments to address issues. When you are ready for a formal valuation, make sure you hire a qualified, credentialed and experienced business appraiser. Armed with the valuation and basis figures, you can determine a reasonable range for potential offers.

PREPARE FINANCIAL FORECASTS

Start with your living expenses, other anticipated spending (including a cushion above your known spending needs)— and don’t forget your goals for leaving a legacy for your family. 66 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

Determine how much money will be enough to meet your needs and goals. Look at anticipated net-cash proceeds, after debt payments and expected tax obligations. Too often, in the thick of negotiating the deal, sellers focus on the gross proceeds, forgetting the cut that debt payments and taxes will take.

ADVISE YOUR FAMILY

If you have family members who are involved in the business, inform them of your plans sooner rather later. When this step is overlooked, the eventual sale can be a source of contention and ill will among family members for generations to come. Once you’ve shared your plans, we encourage you to maintain communication and keep your family involved as key decisions are made. Consider whether it is appropriate to make family wealth transfers at this point in the process. This is often viewed purely as a tax-saving strategy, but it can also help prepare the family for the money.

PROSPECTIVE BUYERS

When you have been deliberate about all of the planning steps leading up to this point, you have the luxury of being able to interview prospective buyers and entertain bids based on more than just the offer price alone.

STRUCTURE THE TRANSACTION

Once you have identified a buyer, you’ll need to ensure the deal is structured in a manner that considers all of the tax and financial implications in play. Consider the following questions: • Will the business’ form of organization be changing? • Will the deal be a buyout or a reorganization? • How will payment be structured? • Is a stock sale or an asset sale more desirable? • Will you maintain an ongoing consulting role? • Is there a need to have non-compete agreements in place after the sale?

THE BIG PICTURE

Selling or transferring ownership of a business is an intricate process. While certain steps may look slightly different for each business owner, this list provides an overview of each action item, as well as the timing and key players you’ll need to be successful. ©2018 The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation. A TIME FOR CELEBRATION By Dr. Peter M. Kalellis

he New Year is cause for celebration, for reliving and for looking back. One thing to be true is that a lot can happen in a year and among the good, the bad, and the ugly, we have learned many lessons. As we say goodbye to 2018, let’s celebrate this holiday season in a spirit of joy and gratitude. No doubt about it, we may have many wishes swirling around inside, or we may feel so fragmented that we don’t know what we want. Why not take a personal inventory and number our desires, wants and needs and decide on a plan to attain them? The key to finding who we truly are in the midst of our activities is to go through our day with an awareness of what it all means. Simply, what is the purpose and meaning of our life? Where are we going or where we would like to go? With focus and conscious attention to our daily life, we can take brief moments to self-awareness. In a few simple deep breaths, we can say, Lord, as you came into our world to share our lives, please come into this day and give us the daily bread…We hand over to you our anxieties and fears, asking you for direction.

A NEW SPIRIT

YOU’RE NEVER ALONE

Imagine how different this time of year would be if we let every handshake, hug , and smile be an opportunity— even for a few brief seconds— to give thanks to God for our new spirit. Lord, please fill our lives, our relationships or our marriages with faith, generosity and self-sacrificing love. You know the struggles we have gone through, let us be as compassionate, forgiving and loving as you are.

This season also brings a mixed bag of emotions and memories. Whether you’ve just walked through the greatest year of your life, or are incredibly glad to see this one finally over, one truth still rings clear amidst it all. You are not alone. How grateful we feel as we think of God’s presence in our life. And though things and people HEALTH & HAPPINESS around us shift and change, God’s For a good start, enjoy this New Year’s Eve and each of the following love never changes. days of 2019 in good health and happiness.

At the end of each day, we can be grateful for the miracle of life. We can awaken the best feelings in all people, and for that, we must take the chance to send a special message to all our loved ones and the people around us. Remember to share a little smile, a kind word, a genuine handshake with those in need.

As glasses are raised, and colorful fireworks explode into the sky, it’s important to recognize the unique symbolism this New Year’s holiday brings with it. A time of new beginnings and fresh start also comes with it a time of reflection and promises. Whether your resolutions consist of keeping your visits at the local gym or for better relationships with loved ones, it can make all the difference to put these hopes into words and warm wishes.

68 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

As we say goodbye to 2018, let’s celebrate this holiday season in a spirit of joy and gratitude.

You and I can whisper a few words of “thank you” for all that we have managed to have in our lives this past year, the good along with the hard things. We can pray for His spirit to lead us each step of this New Year. We can ask that he will guide our decisions and will open new doors. We can ask for God’s wisdom, his strength, and power to make us strong and courageous for the road ahead. We can pray that He will keep us far from the snares and traps of temptations. That He would forgive us for letting fear and worry control our minds. May the fruits of God’s spirit be evident in our lives—his love, joy, peace, kindness, and gentleness. Amen. •

BREAST AUGMENTATION 10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW By Shana Ackerman

oes having to wear a padded bra to camouflage your A cup breasts frustrate you? There is no doubt that you should love who you are and how you look. But sometimes loving who you are or how you look means doing something about how you want to appear. If you are tired of having small breasts, or childbirth took its toll on your breasts, then perhaps it is time to visit a plastic surgeon. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation was one of the top five cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2017. We spoke with nationally recognized, New York-based Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. B. Aviva Preminger about her experiences with breast augmentation. “At least one out of five people who call my office each week wants to discuss options for a breast augmentation,” says Dr. Preminger, “and today, it is not just young ladies looking to increase their breast size, but women of all ages. So many women are looking to give themselves symmetry, larger or smaller breasts, revise their previous augmentation, and to restore their appearance to prior childbirth and nursing.” New York Lifestyles recently met with Dr. Preminger to find what women should ask their plastic surgeon when considering breast augmentation. Here, her expert advice to keep in mind. What will my doctor ask me? You may feel a bit exposed baring it all to your surgeon, but it is a necessity in your quest for a surgical procedure. Your surgeon will ask you what it is, exactly, that you dislike about your breasts, and what it is you want to achieve. The more you share, the better your doctor will be able to help you decide the best course of action to take. You and your surgeon will discuss desired breast shape and size, types of implants, surgery options, scarring, recovery, and expected outcome. In addition to talking about what you want, your surgeon will conduct a visual exam and complete a comprehensive review of your medical history to make sure you are a good candidate for your procedure. Will a breast augmentation, alone, help me to achieve my desired result? In some cases, a breast augmentation alone will not achieve the desired results. If your nipples point downward or if your areola is disproportionally sized, implants alone may not fully achieve your desired effect. In some cases, a breast lift to remove and tighten extra skin and reposition the nipples or an areola or nipple reduction may be required for better shape and appearance. 70 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

You and your surgeon will discuss and decide if any additional procedures are necessary to achieve your desired result. Can I preview my new breasts? Choosing the right breast shape and size can be confusing and stressful. There are so many options available and making this decision should not be taken lightly. I believe that this is the most important decision a woman can make about her breast augmentation surgery, and because it can significantly help her achieve the desired result, I have incorporated Crisalix 3D Imaging into my practice. This technology allows my patients to see their body in 3D and from there we can simulate any breast size and shape. It is amazing that my patients can view their “new breasts” before they even schedule their surgery! What types of implants are available? There are two types of breast implants: saline and silicone. Saline implants can provide a uniform shape, firmness, and feel. Recently, a new type of saline breast implant called IDEAL was added to the market. IDEAL implants consist of a series of implant material shells nested together with two separate chambers that contain saline. The advanced structure controls the movement of the saline and supports the implant edges, reducing collapse and wrinkling. This amazing implant provides my patients with a youthful look and natural feel. The other implant option is silicone. Silicone gel feels more like a natural breast. There are round implants, teardrop-shaped implants, smooth implants, and textured implants. The various types of implants give patients many options, and all of these options should be discussed with your surgeon. How is the surgery performed? Breast augmentation surgery can be performed in one of two ways: under the muscle (submuscular) or behind the breast tissue (submammary/subglandular). The position of the implant will depend on the type of implant, the desired enlargement, and your body type. Your surgeon should discuss both options to determine the best method to achieve your ideal result. How long will my recovery take? Every woman is unique in their recovery process, but generally speaking, most woman return to work four to seven days following surgery, resume light exercise after two weeks, resume strenuous activity after six weeks, and after about 12 weeks most swelling is resolved. Some women may feel they can go back to work immediately, but it is best if they take it easy for at least four to seven days and not overexert themselves. Will I have scars after my breast augmentation? When performing a breast augmentation, the incisions are made in inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring. The incision size will vary based on the type of implant, desired enhancement, and the patient’s physique. It is important to discuss the incision options with your surgeon and for the two of you to decide which incision is appropriate for your desired outcome. Incision options that I utilize include around the areolar edge, the fold under the breast, or in the armpit. There is also a belly-button approach, but I do not use this because it provides limited access to the breasts. As much as I wish surgery were a scar-free process, it is simply not possible. However, proper care following your procedure can reduce visible scarring, and many of my patients find that the scars are nearly invisible 18 to 24 months post-surgery. How long will my breast augmentation last? Nothing lasts forever. Some implants last over 20 years without incident while other implants may only last for five to seven years. If there is a concern that there is a change in contour, shape, size, hardening in areas or strange pain or discomfort is noticed, a visit to your surgeon should be scheduled immediately. What about getting screened for breast cancer after I have breast implants? A mammogram is a gold standard for annual breast health screenings starting at age 40. A breast implant does not prevent a woman from having her breast cancer screening. It is important to let the technician know if you have breast implants, as additional imaging is necessary to visualize the breast tissue and implant integrity better. There is a lot to consider and learn about breast augmentation surgery. There are many options you will need to discuss with your plastic surgeon in order to develop the best treatment that you will be most comfortable with. Being informed and ready to ask questions will create a great consultation with your surgeon and ensure both you and the surgeon are on the same page. Dr. Preminger says, “Finding a board certified plastic surgeon that you are comfortable with may take some time, but it is the most important step in the process. Do not be afraid to ask for qualifications or to look at before and after photos. You should always feel comfortable with the procedure, the results, and the surgeon.” For more information on B. HEALTH & WELLNESS

DR. NORBERT GLEICHER THE GO-TO IVF SPECIALIST By Bailey Beckett

oday, women are increasingly getting pregnant through in vitro fertilization with their own eggs—even at the age of 48. This according to the foremost IVF practitioner, Dr. Norbert Gleicher, MD, FACOG, FACS, and President/Medical Director/Chief Scientist of the Center for Human Reproduction (CHR). Founded by Gleicher 40 years ago, it has become one of the top fertility clinics in the world with a focus on patients who have previously failed treatments elsewhere. Gleicher has been a leader in the field since 1981 when he began seeing in vitro fertilization research gaining traction across Europe. Then Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, he flew to Paris to study the trend and came back on a mission to grow the field in the U.S. “It had dramatically changed from what we considered a hocus-pocus practice into a very scientific field,” Gleicher says. “It was exciting, and I saw an opportunity to contribute.”

A PIONEER IN THE FIELD

THE FUTURE OF IVF

Boy did he ever. A native of Austria, where he received his medical training, Gleicher formed CHR in 1990 and has established it as a pioneer in fertility treatments. Working with colleagues David H. Barad, MD, MS, and Vitaly A. Kushnir, MD, CHR was the first clinic to perform vaginal egg retrieval, as well as tubal catheterization to repair obstructed fallopian tubes. Additionally, they helped introduce a hormone therapy, DHEA, for women with poor ovarian reserves to help produce estrogen and increase egg quality. The focus of CHR is relatively simple: impregnating older women with their own eggs. “The difference is not only the age,” Gleicher says, “but the viability of the ovarian reserves: how many eggs they have left. Those are the most predictive factors. Most women are pushed into using egg donors after 42. They are frequently told they have no chance, but we feel it’s too early.”

Most exciting to Gleicher is what is ahead. “We are on the verge of breakthroughs that will erratically change how we practice IVF,” he says. “We are going to be able to mature eggs early in the lab, which will give a woman enough eggs for the rest of her life, as well as make new eggs from stem cells, which has already been done in mice. That and even more will revolutionize our practice.” Those advancements will help women who have chosen to wait to have children, which is often blamed on focusing on careers instead. There is truth to that, Gleicher says, but another factor is eligibility. “A trend we are seeing is that often professional women do not find husbands,” Gleicher says. “As they become successful, it becomes harder and harder.” Theories of why could fill textbooks (professional envy? Competition?) Fortunately, when that time does come, starting a family has become easier. We can almost always find enough sperm,” Gleicher says. “If we can make new eggs, just imagine what that would mean.”

This is true especially after news last year of a 48-year-old woman impregnated with her eggs successfully—the oldest on record. “It is very symbolic for the progress we have made,” Gleicher says. “I’ve been working in IVF from the very beginning, and I remember the days when we didn’t accept women older than 39. This sends a message to many other IVF programs. The fact that we have a pregnancy at 48 years old For more information on the Center for Human Reproduction, means there’s a better chance for those who are in their forties.” visit centerforhumanreprod.com. • 72 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

BOBBY VAN’S

MORE THAN JUST A STEAK LOVER’S PARADISE By Anne Raso

t goes without saying that Bobby Van’s is a legend of the Manhattan steakhouse scene, not just for their prime quality meat but also their portion size. This meat lover’s institution arguably has the biggest steaks in the city (the Filet Mignon is an amazing 12- to-14 ounces)—all served in a cozy classic wood-paneled environment. As one manager told me, Bobby Van’s meat is “all about the wow factor” and judging from my recent dinner at its Park Avenue location, there’s no argument there. Food comes out fast, is highly consistent while the wait staff is courteous and aims to please all types of diners. The Filet Mignon was ultratender and incredibly delicious but we discovered a “sleeper hit”—Horseradish Encrusted Salmon. My guest declared this “as the best salmon dish ever!” We asked affable owner Ricky Passarelli if he agrees that the large cuts are indeed the restaurant’s major wow factor. “Absolutely! We eat with our eyes first and even if steak isn’t what you want, people still tend to look when a large sizzling Porterhouse is delivered to a table,” he remarked, “and one of three popular cuts customers prefer. The others are Filet Mignon and Rib Eye. No surprise.” However, Passarelli is also crediting the remarkable appetizers and sides (which include Creamed Spinach that many Yelp! readers declare “the best in the city”) along with a Caprese Salad composed of divinely fresh Handmade Mozzarella and Heirloom Tomatoes. 74 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE At their Park Avenue restaurant, you may notice the lunch crowd is predominantly men enjoying their favorite cuts. Early evening is the afterwork commuter crowd (it’s a mere two-minute walk to Grand Central Terminal). As Passarelli says, “I think the key to our success and longevity is that we know what our customers want. The lunch crowd of mostly businesspeople expect a great meal and then be back at their desks in say an hour. The after-work crowd needs that downtime to relax with great drinks and apps that are delicious and reasonable priced. As for the tourists, they want a place that is quintessentially New York.” Before you New York foodies ask, Bobby Van’s does carry the trendy Cowboy Cuts that are extra-large (and uber-expensive). “Diners are becoming more sophisticated and informed with their choices and a part of that is how the food is presented. The Cowboy Cut is one of the more popular options, as it’s such a spectacular cut of meat all on its own; it needs nothing else on the plate to look impressive,” Passarelli said matter-of-factly. One has to wonder if the healthy eating trend has affected the steakhouse biz and if it was necessary to add more fish and vegetarian dishes to the Bobby Van’s menu as a result. (BV’s does offer items such as steamed fish, veggies, and salads). Passarelli remarked, “It may seem like a contradiction, but healthy eating and steakhouse are not mutually exclusive, especially at Bobby Van’s where we have always prided ourselves on the variety of our menu. There are plenty of options for those looking to change their diets and with over a dozen seafood and salad options available, we are more than happy to accommodate.”

KEEP IT SIMPLE Passarelli puts the true appeal of Bobby Van’s in a nutshell when he tells New York Lifestyles Magazine, “It’s about familiarity. People come to Bobby Van’s because they know they are getting a great meal, and part of that is knowing what the food is supposed to taste like. We keep it simple, so the quality of the cut and aging process comes through with each bite.” Naturally, being the owner of a prime steakhouse has its challenges and requires being “on call” almost 24/7. He is proud of the fact that he has helped make Bobby Van’s successful in the country’s most competitive steakhouse market. Passarelli concluded with a smile, “Being successful and enjoying the longevity that Bobby Van’s has maintained is the greatest highlight and challenge (of my career). As a restaurateur in New York City, trying to keep a control on cost is never easy. Being able to have a business that is profitable while keeping the customers happy—and willing to come back— is an achievement that I am glad to say I enjoy daily.” The key to Bobby Van’s success is, according to Passarelli, quite simple: “Great ambience, great food, and great service.” We agree! THE PERFECT MATCH

MASTERING THE ART OF WINE & FOOD PAIRINGS By Tina Mulqueen

hen I was a kid, we had a holiday tradition. Every year during celebratory meals, the children in my family were invited to partake in the adult festivities by having a glass of wine. Only, there was just one wine offered (if you could call it wine). The sparkly red accompaniment more closely resembled a wine cooler, and I remember it was about five dollars a bottle at the local grocery store. Perhaps this was my parents’ genius and the reason I didn’t drink until I was much, much older. If you’re looking for something a little more refined to offer your guests, but aren’t sure where to start, we have you covered. We connected with our friend Keith Belter, a wine expert and restaurant wine buyer, to craft some perfect pairings for traditional holiday dishes.

THE MAIN COURSE TURKEY Time-honored turkey recipes with mashed potatoes and gravy tend to be heavy, so you might consider pairing them with a lighter bodied wine. “White wine with high acidity, like Pinot Gris, can balance out the fat and salt from a turkey feast,” says Keith. Because you’re searching for a Pinot Gris (or Pinot Grigio, depending on the region) with high acidity, you’ll want to gravitate toward areas that harvest the grape early, such as Italy and Germany. Or, if you’re looking to buy local, you might seek out a Pinot Gris from a Finger Lakes label. As an alternative to Pinot Gris for those averse to white wines, consider a Rosé. 76 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

HAM If ham is the center of your holiday meal, think about how it’s prepared when you’re selecting wine to pair. If you’re serving a honey ham, for example, you’ll want to ensure your wine is not too sweet. While the Riesling grape has a reputation for being ultra-sweet, typical Rieslings are actually on the dry side. A dry Riesling with just a touch of residual sugar can help to balance out the saltiness of a ham dinner. The Riesling grape flourishes in the Finger Lakes region, so you’re apt to find a great bottle right here in New York

LAMB “Lamb tends to be a bit gamey, so you’ll want to pair it with a full-bodied red,” says Keith. A big, bold Cabernet Sauvignon, such as one you’d find from the Napa Valley region, works well with lamb. If you’re not a Cabernet Sauvignon fan, a Syrah or Red Zinfandel are other reliable options. Look for a moderately tannic wine to bring out the flavors in the meat.

DESSERT PUMPKIN PIE “A dry dessert wine, like Oloroso Sherry, pairs well with the sweet baking spices typical of pumpkin pie,” says Keith. Oloroso Sherry is not generally very sweet, and it picks up the flavors of oak casks that it’s aged in. The oak influence will enhance your pumpkin dessert without assaulting your taste buds with an overabundance of sugar. To that end, avoid cream and sweetened Oloroso Sherries and Oloroso blends for this pairing— you should be able to find these designations on the label.

FRUITCAKE

GINGERBREAD

For some reason, fruitcake still pervades our winter season celebrations. From festive holiday baskets to potluck offerings, it seems this faux-dessert can’t be avoided. If you, like me, are hoping to make fruitcake more tolerable, pair it with an ice wine. Because ice wines are produced from grapes frozen while on the vine, they produce small batches of highly concentrated, very sweet wine. Since fruitcakes are dense, and not exceptionally sweet, the ultra-sweet ice wines will enhance subtle fruit flavors. Ice wines can be hard to find, however, because their production is dependent on the weather. If you have trouble finding an ice wine, a Ruby Port will do the trick.

While we tend to gravitate toward wine for holiday meal pairings, there’s no denying the unique relationship between gingerbread and stout. Flavors of ginger, cloves, and cinnamon are wellcomplemented by the dark beer. You won’t have much trouble finding a dark, winter beer given the prolific nature of micro-brews available today. •

THE NEW YORK CITY BALLET By Lori Simmons Zelenko

ith visions of sugarplums dancing in our heads, we’ll revisit our childhoods this holiday as New York City Ballet presents the annual season of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. One of the Big Apple’s most beloved traditions, NYCB’s The Nutcracker is a spellbinding experience for children of any age, best though for ages five and up but suitable for the inner child in us all. Little ones will hold their breath as the Christmas Tree (weighing in at a ton) grows to more than triple its size, at once scared and enthralled, while adults smile, remembering the experience from days when they too were on the edge of their seats as the clock chimed midnight and all through the house, creatures were stirring, yes even a mouse. Frothy and fabulous, George Balanchine’s Nutcracker comes complete with a blizzard of ballerinas, toy soldiers and fairytale fantasies; a magical evening of pure delight.

A PERENNIAL FAVORITE

New York City Ballet’s (NYCB) production of Balanchine’s masterpiece premiered on February 2, 1954, long before Lincoln Center was even built. More than sixty years later, The Nutcracker and its score have become perennial favorites across the U.S.A, with now countless versions enchanting new generations of children. Peter Ilyitch Tschaikovsky’s glorious score as delicate as it is whimsically menacing, makes the ballet a marvelous voyage through the dreams of childhood. Powerful and poignant as much as it is playful and pretty, the choreography for George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® tells the magical tale of a girl and her Nutcracker as they travel to the Kingdom of the Sweets, where the Sugarplum fairy makes every child’s dream come true. The scenery by Rouben Ter-Arutunian is a spun-sugar treat. The costumes by Karinska sparkle with fairy dust. And the lighting by Mark Stanley, after the original design by Ronald Bates, creates a total experience at once fanciful and suspenseful. NYCB’s entire roster of more than 150 dancers and musicians, as well as more than 125 children, appear in two alternating casts, from the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet.

NEW YORK CITY BALLET WINTER SEASON Adrian Danchig-Waring in George Balanchine’s neoclassical Apollo a highlight of New York City Ballet’s 2019 Winter Season. ©Paul Kolnik

Opening night January 22, 2019 for NYCB’s Winter Season coincides with the 115th birthday of NYCB’s co-founder and artistic director George Balanchine (1904-1983). Considered the father of American Ballet, his style, dubbed neoclassical, fused the classicism of Russian Tradition with the contemporary movement Balanchine adopted for his work on Broadway and Hollywood. A performance of the Stravinsky/ Balanchine Greek Trilogy, consisting of the ballets Apollo, Orpheus, and Agon, starts January 22nd. These three ballets express the core of NYCB, revealing its identity as a bridge between the classics of the past and the verve and excitement of modern dance.

MOMENTS TO CHERISH

Though the Christmas tree that grows from 12 to 40 feet is my favorite spellbinding moment, the production is completely captivating: The onstage snowstorm casts a gentle spell, the children scamper forth out from under Mother Ginger’s wide, wide skirts (the costume measures 9 feet wide and weighs 85 pounds) and ballerinas dance the ethereal Waltz of The Flowers, as graceful as blossoms wafting through the air. Each child in the audience will find a favorite moment to cherish in their hearts forever. One million watts of lighting, the most used in any New York City Ballet production, light up the stage for the grand finale leaving kids and adults transported to a place where romance reigns and sweets rule as all that’s fearsome is overcome by the power of love. Ticket prices start at $45, and New York City Ballet also offers a Sweet Seat VIP Package, which includes premium seating, a complimentary souvenir book, and a 15 percent discount at the NYCB Gift Shop. Plus, for every two Sweet Seat tickets purchased, audience members will receive a coupon for one complimentary keepsake photo taken with a character from George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®. For more information on The New York City Ballet and to purchase tickets, visit nycballet.com. The 2018 season of the holiday classic, sponsored by The Travelers Companies, Inc., will include 47 performances through Sunday, December 30, 2018. • 80 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

For Balanchine Apollo was something of a fresh start; as the experience of creating it allowed him to understand the close relationships that gestures, like tones in music and shades in painting have with one another. Like a family, he observed, all these elements are beautifully inter-connected. This vital perception shaped the perfection of Apollo and infused Balanchine’s future work. The Winter Season will also feature three Balanchine ballets set to the music of Tchaikovsky—Serenade, the first ballet Balanchine choreographed in America, sweepingly romantic, Mozartiana, prayerful at first then becoming pure exhilaration, and a regal ballet with tiaraed tiers of corps de ballet dancers, Tschaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2 starting January 23rd. —LSZ Prayerful at first then exhilarting, New York City Ballet’s Mozartiana with Sterling Hyltin set to music by Tschaikovsky starting January 23. ©Paul Kolnik

ON THE BIG SCREEN By Jenny Peters

CLASSIC TALES RETOLD AQUAMAN Rated: PG-13 He’s been a part of comic-book myth since 1941, has had his own television shows and video games along the way and now that undersea superhero Aquaman bursts onto the big screen just in time for Christmas. The DC Comics character is half human, half Atlantean (the underwater species that lives in the legendary city of Atlantis), and all hunk as portrayed here by Jason Momoa of Game of Thrones fame. The action-packed flick follows Arthur Curry, who in this origin story discovers his fantastic underwater abilities as well as his undersea home. Look for eye-popping special effects and a host of famous faces—Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Amber Heard, Djimon Hounsou and Dolph Lundgren—in this family-friendly flick. HOLMES & WATSON Not yet rated Sherlock Holmes purists will shiver in their shoes at the release of Holmes & Watson, as Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly put their comedic spin on Arthur Conan Doyle’s very serious detective. Director-writer Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Get Hard) gleefully skewers the Holmes legend, as Ferrell and Reilly pair up yet again, after making hits Talladega Nights and Stepbrothers together. Ralph Fiennes, Rebecca Hall and Kelly Macdonald join them in the mysterious mayhem; and we’re sure all are hoping that this latest pairing turns into a movie franchise worthy of earlier Holmes and Watson big- and smallscreen partnerships. MARY POPPINS RETURNS Rated: PG Purists may balk at a sequel to the beloved 1964 Academy Award winner Mary Poppins, but true purists know that P. L. Travers actually wrote eight books about the magical nanny (and that a West End/Broadway theatrical adaptation also ran for years). Plus, with Emily Blunt in the leading role of this much-anticipated musical and Lin-Manual Miranda joining her as Jack, a friend very much in the tradition of Bert, there’s much to like about this new story told by director Rob Marshall. Add in a practically perfect in every way cast that includes Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep and this one’s bound to be one of the winter’s biggest hits. END-OF-YEAR OSCAR HOPEFULS BEN IS BACK Rated: R Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges are both frontrunners for Academy Award nominations for their performances as mother and son in Ben Is Back, an emotional drama set on Christmas Eve. He’s a teenage drug addict, she’s a mother at her wit’s end. From writer Peter Hedges, whose What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? and Dan in Real Life also navigate intense personal stories, Ben Is Back explores the nature of love, addiction and second chances. Courtney B. Vance also stars. 82 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS Rated: R The newest take on this oft-told tale of the rivalry between Queen Elizabeth I of England and Mary Queen of Scots—we’re partial to Mary of Scotland, the 1936 version starring Katharine Hepburn—stars two current powerhouses of modern cinema. With Saoirse Ronan as Mary and Margot Robbie as Elizabeth (both previous Oscar nominees) and a screenplay written by House of Cards creator Beau Willimon, this one’s bound to be a barnburner of intrigue and action. Add in Guy Pearce, Gemma Chan and David Tennant in the cast of this period piece and we say grab the popcorn, it’s probably gonna be a bumpy ride for Mary! ON THE BASIS OF SEX Rated: PG-13 Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) stars as a youthful Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who began her career in the judiciary as an attorney who fought for women’s rights. Working along with her fellow lawyer and husband Marty (played by Armie Hammer) in the early 1970s, the couple brought a key gender discrimination case before the U.S. Court of Appeals, in an attempt to change the status quo in American society. This is that story, which indirectly celebrates RBG’s 25th anniversary as a U.S. Supreme Court judge with its 2018 holiday release. Justin Theroux, Sam Waterston and Kathy Bates costar in this courtroom drama directed by Mimi Leder. ROMA Rated: R Alfonso Cuaron, the two-time Academy Award winning director-editor of Gravity, returns to the big screen with Roma, a personal story set in a Mexico City neighborhood of the same name. Winner of the Golden Lion Best Picture Award at the Venice Film Festival, Roma has had the frontrunner Best Picture Oscar buzz since early Fall, as the one to beat. Shot in black and white and set in the 1970s, this evocative drama is a tribute to that vibrant, chaotic city as well as to the women who raised Cuaron, who also produced, shot, edited and penned the script of this film. And it’s no surprise that the film shares the title with Federico Fellini’s 1972 love letter to his home city of Rome; that’s a clear influence on this, Cuaron’s imaginative modern offering. VICE Rated: R You may not recognize Christian Bale in Vice, for he is so completely transformed into Dick Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States. In this truth-based seriocomic tale, Cheney’s rise to power (and control over everything in America, including his president, George W. Bush) is a mindboggling story of greed and manipulation. Bale is a frontrunner to finally take home his first Best Actor Oscar (he’s been nominated twice and has one for Best Supporting Actor already), while Amy Adams as his equally ambitious wife Lynne and Steve Carell as Daniel Rumsfeld are also on the Oscar hunt yet again. Meanwhile, Sam Rockwell as G. W. Bush just may win back-to-back Best Supporting Actor trophies for his inspired performance as well. HOLIDAY EDITION | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 83

ON THE SMALL SCREEN By Jenny Peters

SCI-FI AND FANTASY RULE THE WINTER

BIRD BOX Netflix There’s a new trend going on with Netflix, as the company is making movies with highpowered stars—like Oscar winner Sandra Bullock in Bird Box—and releasing them on the same day both in theaters and via their subscription network. So you can choose how you see this dystopian drama about a post-apocalyptic world, on big screen or small. What you’ll find in either place is a tale of survival after a mysterious force decimates the earth’s population, which also stars Sarah Paulson and John Malkovich. A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES Sundance Now You’ll certainly find witches in this British adaptation of the best-selling novel A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, and plenty of occult happenings; plus, there are vampires, demons and much more in this intricate tale that roams from present day to past. Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer star in this exciting, magic-filled series that originally aired on Sky One TV in Britain to much acclaim earlier this fall. NIGHTFLYERS SyFy Game of Thrones fans will want to tune into Nightflyers, as creator George R. R. Martin makes his next foray into television as the executive producer of this series based on his 1980 novella. The Nightflyer is a spaceship, one headed on an expedition to the outer edge of earth’s solar system in the year 2093. With Gretchen Mol leading the team of scientists and astronauts searching for aliens, this science-fiction adventure unfolds in many unexpected and often scary ways. Eoin Macken, David Ajala and Brian F. O’Byrne co-star in this highly anticipated series. THE PASSAGE Fox What could go wrong when the U. S. government starts doing secret experiments on death-row prison inmates? Well, in the case of The Passage, one heck of a lot! We’re talking vampires, and incredibly infectious ones at that. Adapted for the small screen from the trilogy of novels by Justin Cronin and famed Oscar-winning director-producer Ridley Scott, this is an all-new take on the never-ending problem of having vampires in our midst. MarkPaul Gosselaar, Emmanuelle Chriqui and youngster Saniyya Sidney star. 84 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

TIDELANDS Netflix There are no vampires or witches in Tidelands; instead, that village is full of inhabitants that are half sirens (think the ones that lured sailors to their deaths in ancient myths) and half humans. Mermaids, perhaps? You’ll have to tune into this 10part series produced in Australia to find out just what these weird creatures are – and whether they are friend or foe to our heroine, a criminal who finds herself stuck in the small fishing community that holds the secrets to their existence. Charlotte Best stars, along with Dustin Clare and Elsa Pataky.

COMEDIES TO KEEP YOU WARM

BLACK MONDAY Showtime Happiness is Don Cheadle in a comedy on Showtime. Returning to the channel that brought us House of Lies (which garnered him four Emmy nominations), Cheadle heads back to 1987 and the infamous Black Monday Wall Street crash. He’s part of a brash group that ends up being responsible for that event, the worst debacle in the history of New York’s famed financial market. He’s got Andrew Rannells, Regina King and Eugene Cordero along for the ride to the bottom, along with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg as the show’s executive producers and sometime episode directors. DUMPLIN’ Netflix Dumplin’ is another Netflix film that’s hitting both theaters and that streaming service at the same time. It’s a charming slice-of-life comedy starring Jennifer Aniston as a slightly crazed former Texas beauty queen with a slightly chubby teenaged daughter (Danielle Macdonald) who doesn’t fit any of the normal beauty queen standards. With a soundtrack dedicated to Dolly Parton’s classic tunes (and featuring new songs by that queen of country pop, too) and an often too-close-to-real point of view of the whole beauty pageant scene, Dumplin’ is an amusing mix of teen angst, adult lunacy and familial dysfunction. VANITY FAIR Amazon Prime Olivia Cooke stars as Becky Sharp in this sparkling, sumptuous seven-part adaptation of the 1848 William Makepeace Thackeray novel that recently aired in Britain to rapt audiences. It’s the slightly ribald, totally timeless, often told rags-to-riches-to-rags saga of one Englishwoman’s search for wealth, position and even happiness in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars. And with Michael Palin taking on the role of Thackeray himself and other talented players like Martin Clunes and Tom Bateman joining in as well, this sometimes dramatic, sometimes comedic and sometimes downright farcical tale is fun for everyone (and especially for all of you Anglophiles out there). • HOLIDAY EDITION | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 85

CHRISTINE LAHTI

A FEMINIST AND ACTIVIST CHANNELS GLORIA STEINEM By Ellis Nassour

tage, TV veteran, and Oscar-winner Christine Lahti is starring Off Broadway as her mentor and friend Gloria Steinem in Tony-winning playwright Emily Mann’s play Gloria: A Life, an affecting, rich tapestry about one of the most inspiring and remarkable women of our time. For over five decades, Steinem has raised her voice for women’s equality. Gloria: A Life does something only live theater can do. Act One is Steinem’s story, told by Lahti in illuminating ways, abetted by projections in a temporary configuration of posh stadium seating and a remarkable cast of seven women playing numerous female and male roles. Act Two, called a Talking Circle, invites audiences to carry the play’s themes into conversations of their own. Special guests often lead the conversation. Lahti has collaborated closely with Mann and Tony-winning director Diane Paulus to make the play as relevant as possible. “I’ve never had an experience like this,” she enthuses. “Diane’s amazing, so low-ego, and open to ideas I’ve put forward. Gloria and I connect on many levels. Having her as a friend, I had a lot of offer.”

AT THE FOREFRONT Since her days at the University of Michigan, where Lahti received a bachelor’s degree in drama, she’s been in the forefront for job/pay equality and health care for women. She’s been particularly effective as a member of NOW (National Organization for Women); a board member of ERA, which is making ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment a top priority (“especially since we didn’t succeed the first time); and a board member of Equality Now, the grassroots organization that’s trying to eradicate violence against women worldwide. She’s also gone on the road to pitch for candidates she believes in. “Those four years at university changed my life and turned me into an advocate for women,” says Lahti. “It was the late 60s and the height of the Vietnam War protests, but that wasn’t the only mitigating factor.” Lahti reveals her activism came about the same way it did for Steinem. “Hers came from witnessing that her mother wasn’t able to live a full life for lots of reasons. I witnessed the same thing with my mother Elizabeth. She was always second class in her marriage and not really respected. She was never able to live her full potential. That worry has been the fuel of my activism. That’s where Gloria and I connect on a very deep level. I feel the same type of fire in my belly.” She’s quite candid about pushing her mother away “because I was afraid of becoming her. Gloria did the same. However, I was vindicated by mother’s last chapter. She became a professional artist and a pilot. I like to think she was inspired by her daughter and the feminist movement.” But it wasn’t just her mother or Steinem’s. “In the suburb of Detroit where I grew up, it was every mother,” states Lahti. “They had the role that was handed to them: housewives, which in itself is an honorable thing, but none were able to live to their full potential. It was the same everywhere. I was determined, like Gloria, to make sure all women matter. That’s the message that resonates throughout Gloria: A Life.” When Lahti heard about the play by Mann (who adapted Having Our Say, from the best-selling memoir by Sarah and Annie Elizabeth Delany and Amy Hill Hearth), she reached out to lead producer Daryl Roth (Kinky Boots, The Normal Heart, and Indecent), Tony-winning director Diane Paulus (Waitress, Pippin, Porgy and Bess), and her friend Steinem to say she was interested. So were they, it turns out. 86 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

EMBRACING THE PRESENT MOMENT The production at the Daryl Roth Theatre is the very definition of gender equality activism. The company comprised almost entirely of women—cast, creative team, designers, staff, and producers. “Even in theater, often regarded as an equality leader in the entertainment world,” notes Roth, “this extraordinary group of women is unprecedented on or Off Broadway. We honor Gloria’s five decades of activism and breaking down barriers for women around the world. We’re so very lucky that Christine, whose life has been affected and inspired by Gloria, is our Gloria. Her physicality is uncanny. It feels like she’s channeling Gloria.” Paulus agrees. “Christine’s a supremely talented actress, activist, and friend of Gloria’s. She’s brought everything in her being to this production.” Audiences, female and male, are moved. “Emily’s play includes embracing the present moment, so we’re consistently updating the script to energize the production. There’s been an overwhelming response from those who’ve shared what we’re all going through. Hearing their stories has been amazing. For some, it’s a trip down memory lane; for younger generations, an informative lesson of where we came from, and what their mothers and grandmothers went through.”

AT HOME ON STAGE & TV “I was getting some great roles in TV, and stayed away from theater for a while. But I began to crave it after I aged out of certain TV and film roles,” says Christine. She’s had recurring roles in The Blacklist, the reboot of Hawaii Five-0, and co-starred three seasons on Law and Order: Special Victim’s Unit as A.D.A. Sonya Paxton, and five seasons as Dr. Kathryn Austin on Chicago Hope. She’s especially proud of her role in 2004’s short-lived, way ahead of its time Jack and Bobby, a futuristic faux documentary in which she had the scene-stealing role of the eccentric college professor and single mother of brothers Jack and Bobby McCallister and her efforts to secure one a place in the history as U.S. president. It netted her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series/Drama. Lahti also was Oscar-nominated as Best Supporting Actress for 1984’s Swing Shift, and won a 1995 Oscar for Best Short Film, Live Action for Lieberman in Love, in which she starred and directed. Her early years in New York she was a waitress and did commercials before breaking into theater and TV. Off Broadway, she appeared in major roles at the Public; in the rotating cast of Culture Project’s Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen’s award-winning The Exonerated, a first-person narrative about wrongfully-convicted inmates; and revivals, such as Clifford Odets’ The Country Girl; and Second Stage’s revival of Jules Feiffer’s black comedy Little Murders. Broadway roles have included Michael Weller’s bittersweet romance Loose Ends, Wendy Wasserstein’s acclaimed The Heidi Chronicles; and Yasmina Reza’s Tony-winning black comedy God of Carnage. There’ve been other important successes as well. Lahti authored True Stories from an Unreliable Eyewitness, a comical and selfdeprecating essay collection focusing on three major periods of her life: childhood, her journey as an actress and activist, and the realities of her life as a middleaged woman in Hollywood. Another role certainly shouldn’t be overlooked. Lahti, 68, has been married to her soul mate pro du c e r / dire c tor Thomas Schlamme (The Americans, West Wing, and Sports Night among others) since 1983. They have three children. They met through friends and had shared theatrical interests. “But at that time, I was very suspect of any man.” she laughs. “I thought all men wanted to squish me, but he turned out to be this incredible feminist. In those days, men never called themselves feminists. They were humanists. Today, you can’t get away with that! You have to identify where you stand.” One reason their marriage has been strong, Lahti points out, “is that we have work we’re passionate about and share our adventures with each other.” She describes being directed by her husband in a play and episodes of Chicago Hope and Jack and Bobby as “wonderful experiences.” Either way you look at it, she says, “I really lucked out.” For more information on Gloria: A Life, visit gloriatheplay.com or ticketmaster.com. •

MUSEUM HAPPENINGS CHRISTMAS AT THE MET By Clint Brownfield

he Metropolitan Museum of Art, with its three locations--the main building on Fifth Avenue, the Met Breuer on Madison Avenue (formerly the location of the Whitney Museum of American Art) and the Met Cloisters, way uptown in Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park—has many distinctions. But what is not up for dispute is the fact that The Met is New York City’s most visited attraction. That includes such staples as the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The holidays are a particularly festive time to visit The Met. This year visitors can view an incredible array of exhibits running through the beginning of the New Year, with shows devoted to, among others, the works of the Dutch Masters, Delacroix, Tintoretto, and a truly spectacular display of jewelry from The Met’s permanent collection.

ART & ARTIFACTS A standout in this very impressive group of shows is one in particular—Armenia! which runs through January 13, 2019. This exhibition not only includes a spectacular array of art and artifacts from Armenia but also offers a great example of how the Met’s resources and connections can be used to create amazing and comprehensive shows of art and objects from all over the world. Not many other museums around the world can do this. Armenia! explores the arts and culture of the Armenians from their conversion to Christianity in the early fourth century through their leading role on international trade routes in the 17th century. The exhibition emphasizes how Armenians developed a distinctive national identity in their homeland at the base of Mt. Ararat (widely accepted as the resting place of Noah’s Ark) and how they maintained and transformed their traditions as their communities expanded across the globe.

MAGNIFICENT TREASURES

“This is the first major exhibition to celebrate the remarkable artistic achievements of Armenians in the Middle Ages, and the exceptional works of art on view will be a revelation to many of our visitors,” said Max Hollein, Director of The Met. “By examining these magnificent treasures, we can better understand and appreciate the central role that art played in defining and connecting Armenian communities during this time, and how they both influenced and were inspired by styles from other cultures.” More than 140 opulent gilded reliquaries, richly illuminated manuscripts, rare textiles, liturgical furnishings made of precious materials, khachkars (cross-stones), church models, and printed books demonstrate Armenia’s distinctive imagery in their homeland and other major Armenian sites, from the Kingdom of Cilicia on the Mediterranean to New Julfa, in Safavid Persia. Armenia! focuses on major Armenian centers of production from their homeland west and east. It includes images of Armenians, from self-portraits to depictions of male and female rulers, donors, theologians, and historians. More than half of the works on display are on loan from The Republic of Armenia with the support of The Ministry of Culture. Imposing liturgical works are from the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the primary site of the Armenian Church. In Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, the “Matenadaran” Mesrop Masthots` Institute—Museum of Ancient Manuscripts— has lent rare manuscripts, and the History Museum of Armenia has lent monumental church sculptures. Additional works are from The Met’s permanent collection and other American and European institutions. Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Crèche Front View

A SPECIAL CHRISTMAS DISPLAY New York City has a number of very famous Christmas trees, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art has one so unique that many New Yorkers and visitors from all over the world come to The Met during the holidays to marvel at the 20-foot blue spruce located in the Fifth Avenue building’s Medieval Sculpture Hall. The tree and the 18th-century baroque Neapolitan crèche at its base have evolved down through the years to arrive at its present-day priceless splendor. This year, it will be on view through the 12th night, January 6th, with recorded Christmas music to add to the enjoyment of the holiday display. The tree is gracefully lit and adorned with 19 cherubs and 59 angels, while at the base an additional 71 figures represent the three elements of Nativity scenes that were traditional to 18th-century Naples: adoring shepherds and their flocks, the procession of the three Magi, and spirited peasants and townspeople. The display is enhanced by nearly 50 delightful animals and by background pieces that create a dramatic setting for the Nativity, including the ruins of a Roman temple, several quaint houses, and a typical Italian fountain. Materials used to create these decorations include polychromed terracotta, wood, wire wrapped in tow and various fabrics.

THE HISTORY The annual Christmas display has evolved through the generosity, enthusiasm, and dedication of the late Loretta Hines Howard, who began collecting crèche figures in 1925. Mrs. Howard conceived the idea of presenting the elaborate Neapolitan Nativity scene under a Christmas tree—a tradition rooted in Northern Europe, with angels swirling upward to the crowning star—and was later ably assisted by her daughter Linn Howard who contributed to the tree’s great beauty by adding and improving details that are reflected in the current display. This unusual combination was first presented to the public in 1957, with The Met’s exhibition of Mrs. Howard’s collection. Since 1964, Loretta Hines Howard has given more than 200 Neapolitan crèche figures from the 18th century to The Met. -CB

ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER PAMELA MORGAN By Elizabeth Elston

amela Morgan grew up with an innate understanding of entertaining in its many forms. Raised in Wichita Falls, Texas she was enrolled in ballet classes from the tender age of five and carried with her dreams of becoming a professional dancer. Performing was her gift, expressing herself creatively through the arts of dance and music, always prepared with a tune to play on her guitar or a melody to sing belt. Growing up, she admired how her mother would effortlessly entertain guests at their Texas home, beautifully setting the dinner table to complement the excellently plated homecooked meals. Pamela watched as her stylish mother floated through the atmosphere she created for family parties. Holding onto these pastimes—along with her father buoyantly socializing, her brother playing jazz piano—set the tone for her both as an entertainer and entrepreneur. Today, Pamela Morgan is the brains behind Flirting with Flavors, a special events and culinary company serving both New York City and The Hamptons, consistently serving the can-do attitude and big spirit she adopted from her father, an influential Texas businessman. From her father, she learned the skills to succeed as to effectively run a business. It was his energy and social awareness that people around him respected and that Pamela continues to embody in her work. 96 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

MEMORABLE AFFAIRS Entertaining is no easy feat, but inheriting both her parents’ personality and attitude, with Pamela’s passion for performing, connecting with people and the culinary arts, she has produced one-of-a-kind affairs under the Flirting with Flavors signature brand. It all started when Pamela moved to New York after graduating with her dual degree in Dance and Psychology. Looking back, she had the same “small town kid, with big city dreams” story as most, sashaying into New York City’s dance world and having to pick up gigs in between performances to pay the bills. She found joy in assisting small catering companies around the city. Soon Pamela started catering small events on her own. She would create meals for clients hosting small dinners or bachelors wanting to impress their dates with a delicious home-cooked meal—easy enough to prepare. “Secretly I was hoping one of them would fall in love with me!” she said laughing. What she truly hoped for was to own her own business. “I was intrigued by the autonomy of being an entrepreneur and serving others as a creative outlet.” Now a seasoned Entertaining and Lifestyle expert, Pamela Morgan has seen great success catering to private parties, wedding celebrations, and special events for her loyal clientele and their distinguished guests. Pamela recalls when life came full circle for her, describing when her entrepreneurial and design inspiration, Martha Stewart hired her services to cater the New York City opening of the Martha Stewart Living office. Putting her heart and soul into the job, she produced a magnificent engagement truly deserving of Martha Stewart’s satisfaction and approval.

She enjoys the holidays because it combines her passion for food and her love of bringing people together.

Pamela has seen great success catering to private parties, wedding celebrations, and special events for her loyal clientele… A DELICIOUS EXPERIENCE Under Pamela’s direction, Flirting with Flavors has been enlisted to plan charity galas and cater celebrity events. She has showcased her talents on television, appearing on Bravo TV’s Real Housewives and Fox & Friends proudly touting her company’s signature expertise. Working tirelessly, Pamela has successfully built a company from the ground up. She serves tips, recipes, and ideas to her thousands of friends and followers through her blog and Instagram stories. Pamela says, “I wish to inspire others with beauty and deliciousness, and to create an atmosphere where people can really connect, communicate and authentically enjoy each other’s company.” Pamela Morgan is enamored by the distinct beauty of each of the four seasons and enjoys decorating to fit carefully selected themes when her events take place. There are no borders to her culinary expertise and guests always enjoy the palatable journey from season to season. And like all of us, Pamela enjoys the holidays because it combines her passion for food and her love of bringing people together. To prepare the ultimate celebration, she recommends: • The Flirting with Flavors winter menu will include such menu choices as Kombucha Squash and Caramelized Onion Bruschetta; Gravlax cured with Dill, Capers and Juniper Berries; Pear and Pistachio Frisee Salad with Gorgonzola; Rack of Lamb with Fig Onion Jam; Potato and Parsnip Gratin; Cranberry and Pear Crisp; Holiday Trifle; and Miniature Baked Alaska. • As a host/hostess take careful consideration of your guest’s dietary needs (i.e., vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian). • Parting gifts at the door is a fun way to leave a lasting memory. I usually opt for holiday cookies or chocolate and peppermint bark that I wrap myself. If you cannot make them yourself, buy little gifts and festively wrap them for your guests. Pamela’s unique approach likens to the theatrical production of a Broadway musical. Rehearsing lines and marking cues, she coordinates carefully with her team and selected vendors. She constructs scenes and designs moments that bring her ideas to life. Live entertainment or a special guest DJ provide the evening’s musical score. Pamela Morgan provides an ambiance and catering that is simply entertaining and enjoyed by all. MY NEW YORK STORY DIANA HASKELL By Patricia Canole

f you have a pet, then there’s a good chance you also have plenty of pictures stored on your phone or computer. However, quantity doesn’t always equal quality. Going beyond a smartphone camera, animal portrait photographers have elevated the subject matter with their keen eye and a genuine understanding of the animal’s point-of-view to capture the emotional bond we have with our four legged family members—the real glue that binds us to our animals. The best pet photographers have elevated animal portraits to the level of fine art that goes well beyond “cute” to look into the soul of an animal. New York City-based photographer, Diana Haskell, takes the fine art pet photography niche one step further. Dubbed the animal relationship photographer, Diana’s focus is almost exclusively on the human-animal connection. Her portraits help clients see the best version of themselves; when they are joyfully and lovingly “in connection” with their animal companions. Her mission is to help people celebrate the unique and powerful bonds we have with our animals; both through the photographic experience itself and especially through her LoveStory artwork; personalized finished art for each client that become heirloom legacies for future generations. 98 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

A TRUE LOVE STORY “At first, most people say they don’t want to be in the photos with their animal,” explains Diana. “But then, during the shoot, something extraordinary happens. They drop into a zone as their connection takes over. They forget that I am there, and are simply surrounded by love. Afterwards, these images end up being a place where they go to draw peace, joy, and strength.” Diana’s connection with animals is a deeply personal journey. Ivy League-educated, climbing the corporate ladder, her life looked nothing like she had imagined as a little girl. She had always dreamed of working with animals until an unexpected illness changed everything. Seeking answers and a complete recovery, Diana immersed herself in the healing arts, meditation, and other modalities for many years and, subsequently, her love of animals and nature returned to the forefront of her life.

PRESERVING SPECIAL MOMENTS

After the photo shoot, clients visit Diana’s studio on the Upper West Side for their ‘big reveal’ to view the images. There they select their highly-personalized LoveStory art signature bespoke luxury book, a large-format fine-art print, or a hand-crafted keepsake box of mounted prints or all of the above. While every photo shoot is different and every resulting LoveStory unique, in Diana’s experience our animal companions have a unified message to share. “This special experience and these beautiful fine art keepsakes are a constant reminder of what matters most,” says Diana. “Namely, that we love and are loved.”

Years passed and Diana, already a professional photographer, was capturing images of a friend with his dog. Then came a eureka moment! She realized how meaningful this bond was and knew her imagery had touched something deeper. NEW YORK, NY

TIME OUT WITH… JEFF KIMMEL, ATTORNEY AT LAW By Bailey Beckett

effrey Kimmel is a laid-back, affable guy… off hours. At Midtown’s Davio’s restaurant, the lawyer is quick with a joke and smile. But that belies his litigation prowess. Kimmel’s mastery of the law and aggressive advocacy of his clients has made him one of the most admired—and feared—in the courtroom. AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME

Jeffrey Kimmel

Recently made partner at Akerman LLP, one of the city’s most respected firms, Kimmel is known for his work with start-up companies like Viber, a voice over IP phone app that competes with WhatsApp sold to a Japanese conglomerate for $900 million; and Juno car service, a New York-based Uber competitor recently sold to Gettaxi. New York Lifestyles caught up with the legal eagle to get his perspective on an ever-shifting legal landscape. Describe your area of focus. My main focus is employment law—generally representing employers, but also representing executives in contract negotiations. However, in addition to my employment law practice, I represent and have represented some start-up technology clients, many of which have been very successful. Why did you go into the specialty? During law school, I took a job working for a plaintiff-side employment lawyer. I found the practice area to be really interesting. What do you find most exciting and most challenging? One of the great things about employment law is that it is continually evolving. Another great thing is it has a direct bearing on people’s lives. The issues are not “ivory tower” legal issues, but rather have an immediate impact on the industry, workers, etc. Also, the fact patterns can be more interesting than, for instance, a breach of contract case between two large companies. Although, those can be interesting too. What are the big issues you are seeing/facing of late? Naturally, the #MeToo movement over the past year or so has generated a lot of cases. Additionally, new laws have been passed to deal with sexual harassment in the workplace, which require employers to take immediate action to comply. In addition to the sexual harassment issues, another major problem in employment law is the on-demand economy and whether workers are to be classified as employees or independent contractors, or some other classification of non-employee. That is the issue in most of the large class actions I defend—proper classification of works. You have represented employees against big companies and vice versa. Which is easier? I have done both. Nothing is easy. It is a case by case question. Sometimes you have good facts or law on your side, and sometimes you do not. What is the best advice you can give each party before litigation? Avoid litigation if you can. If you can’t—go hard. If you can’t afford to go hard, avoid litigation. What should people know about employment law? It is complicated. Always seek the advice of a lawyer. 100 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

Is Human Resources an employee’s friend or do they serve to protect the company? Many good people work in Human Resources who care about the workers in a company. Whether HR is looking out for the workers or the company management depends in large part on the culture of the particular company. But if you are an employee, you cannot just assume that HR is there solely to help you. What is your life motto? I have few: 1) Don’t try to control everything or you will go nuts. You can control some things, but sometimes you have to adjust to the path that is in front of you. 2) Treat people the way you would want to be treated. 3) See rule 2, but in words of Patrick Swayze in Roadhouse, “Be nice until it’s time not to be nice.” What do you do to relax? Family. Practicing law—it relieves the stress caused by my golf game. Also, Scotch helps. For more information on Jeffrey Kimmel, visit akerman.com. •
