Now that Springtime has officially arrived we can start enjoying a lot more outdoor experiences this beautiful city has to offer. For some of us who are called “fanatic,” it’s time to grab our baseball caps and hop on a subway to our favorite stadium in the Bronx to see the Bombers in action or to Citi Field in Queens to cheer on the Amazing Mets for a new season. Also, just a short train ride away, is Coney Island where history comes alive at Luna Park. You can enjoy a thrilling ride on the 92-year-old Cyclone wooden rollercoaster that will get your heart pumped full of adrenaline, and if you dare jump in the first seat. Then afterward you can take a short stroll over to the New York Aquarium for a face to face encounter with some real-life sharks. If you survived the day so far and recovered enough to still have an appetite, don’t forget to go over to Nathan’s Famous to grab a hot dog or two all the way. Now with temperatures rising, it’s the perfect time to dine at one of many restaurants that provide outdoor seating. Whether it’s for the view, sampling some mouth-watering cuisine, or relaxing with friends over a drink and peoplewatching, it’s become a rite of Spring tradition in NYC. It’s been a while since I made some time to leave the office to go outside for lunch. My place of choice last week was P.J Clarke’s on the Hudson with a friend who was in town with his family from Australia. It was the perfect combination of spectacular food (as always), a magnificent view and fabulous company. So no matter how busy your week gets, make the time to get out and treat yourself at your favorite sidewalk cafe, outdoor garden, or rooftop table. You deserve it. April is also the time when some of us celebrate the Easter season by participating in another tradition, the NYC’s Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival or maybe even a neighborhood Easter Egg Hunt. I have fond childhood memories of getting Easter baskets filled with chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, candies, and other surprises. If you remember, one of those candies may have been the original yellow marshmallow Peeps. Well, some things never change. Kids grow into adults who still love the little sugar-coated delights. Even my editor-in-chief, Pat Canole, is a huge fan. For some, Peeps have become an obsession hunting for the latest new flavors. Choose from a host of flavors including blueberry, lemon, blue raspberry, strawberry, vanilla crème, fruit punch, cotton candy, orange sherbet, a root beer float, sour watermelon, and three mystery flavors. Also look for Peeps flavored jelly beans and the limited-edition Peeps marshmallow-flavored cereal by Kellogg’s. (Peeps fun fact: Matt Stonie holds the World Record for eating 255 Peeps in 5 minutes!) After all this talk about food and candy, it’s probably a good time to burn a few calories. So consider taking a stroll along the riverwalk at the new Hudson Yards or a Citi Bike ride through Central Park. Whatever way, enjoy the month making lasting memories with friends and family. CREATING BROADWAY MAGIC! By Ellis Nassour
he two-part epic Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series and the first official Potter story to be developed for the stage. Following a blockbuster premiere in London, the show and cast crossed the Atlantic for the U.S. premiere at the totally renovated Lyric Theatre on West 43rd Street, which now has been turned into a Harry Potter fantasy experience. It received ten 2018 Tony Award nominations and won six—including Best Play, Director (innovative Tony winner John Tiffany), Scenic and Costume Design (Christine Jones and Katrina Lindsay, respectively). If there had been categories for Best Magic and Illusion (Jamie Harrison and Jeremy Chernick) and Best Reviews of the Season, H.P. and company would’ve certainly taken those home, too. JK Rowling was most intrigued with the idea of diving into Harry’s life as a father—the boy who grew up orphaned is now a parent. It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he’s a husband, father of three school-age children, and an overworked Ministry of Magic employee. ©AnnieWatt.com

Taking over the lead of the adult Harry in the American cast is James Snyder (If/Then, In Transit, Cry-Baby) who explained, “Harry is still grappling with his past that refuses to stay in the past. His middle son, Albus, also struggles with the weight of a legacy he never wanted. It really is a deep and complex family drama, abetted with all the JK Rowling trappings and mindboggling magic and illusion.” James says he’s always tried to book shows that are different “and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is not only different, there’s nothing like it. Nothing!” In his career, he points out, “I’ve been fortunate. Since L.A. was my home I was able to pick and choose what I wanted to go after without having to worry too much about where I’d hang my hat. The roles have been so varied. Thankfully, I got to work with great people who are interested in furthering the art.” In October 2018 when he auditioned, he was hoping to get the role of Draco. “I did a lot of homework: read four books, spoke to friends familiar with the show. FINDING HIS PLACE
James, 38, was born in San Jose but raised in Sacramento. “I’m a real California boy, through and through. Luckily, I was raised in a musical family.” His father, a realtor, and grandfather, a barber, sang Barber Shop. Along with family members, they formed a group which won several awards. James’ mother is a writer. He credits his Christian Brothers High/ Sacramento choir teacher Christian Bohm with instilling a love of theater in him. It was there he began appearing onstage. “I grew up listening to the Beatles, Beach Boys, Billy Joel, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, so when I got into high school, I saw a path,” he says. “I was already a bit of a ham. I played soccer in the Fall and did track in Spring. I didn’t see a fit with the baseball guys, so freshman year I auditioned for Godspell, and won the role of Jesus. That’s where I clicked.” He explained that with shows such as Gilmore Girls and Smallville, there were lots of opportunities in TV. It didn’t hurt that he was drop-dead handsome. He also appeared in musicals on the West Coast and at Goodspeed and Paper Mill Playhouse. The actors who’ve influenced him, that he looks up to, run the gamut from Albert Finney to Hugh Jackman. James was self-taught on piano and guitar. In addition he plays clarinet, trumpet, harmonica, and the Australian Aboriginal didgeridoo. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2003 from USC’s School of Dramatic Arts. From his late teens, he became a regular guest star on dozens of TV shows and in film. “I kept thinking, ‘Make the move to New York,’ but I could never convince myself it was the right move.”

However, he finally came to New York in 2008 to play Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker—a 50s Baltimore bad boy, albeit with a heart of gold—when the musical adaptation of John Water’s 1990 film (which starred Johnny Depp), Cry-Baby, moved from San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse to Broadway. During Harry’s two parts (a total of five hours and 15 minutes, with two intermissions), James is rarely off stage except for quick costume changes. “Once the train pulls out of the station, it’s non-stop,” he states. “It’s the difference between running a marathon and running a sprint. I always considered versatility one of my strengths, and I get to test that theory. I’m pulling from every part of my body, from everything I’ve learned. It’s almost as if every bit of training I’ve had and every show I’ve done has enabled me to pull this off.” He says for him, or any actor lucky to be in his shoes, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the ultimate experience. “We worked really long and hard. Rehearsals began before Christmas and were painstaking. It didn’t let up until after we opened. I’ll feel rested in about two months.”

He met his wife Jacqueline, a fashion designer who specialized in swimwear, on a blind date, while bartending by day and acting at night. They have two children, “so one of the fun things about this role is I get to work with kids—incredibly talented kids who are wonderful to work with. The bonding happened quite quickly. The great thing is I wasn’t going in alone.” Although he doesn’t get to sing, he does create a lot of magic. “The difference between rehearsing for Harry and rehearsing for a musical,” he explains, “is that instead of doing book scenes for a couple of hours and then working with the music director and choreographer, I worked a couple of hours— or more, then met with movement director Steven Hoggett to develop character and learn magic. Now I can add to my resume: Magician!” So what is this “movement”? “It’s choreography without music and with a feeling, a purpose, and an intention. It’s very natural, all born from within. Everything is motivated. You know the why before the move, not the move and then the why. James has appeared in a variety of TV and film roles, but the stage is where he feels he belongs. He and his family have been East Coast transplants for three years. When he and his wife saw Harry for the first time after he was cast, she said, “I can’t believe you’re getting to do this.” James couldn’t believe it either. “There’s nothing like it. Nothing! It’s a beautiful play about family, fathers and sons, parents trying to do better. Then, you add in this incredible wizarding world of possibility.” He said when you audition for shows, certain things have to click. “I’ve gone up for shows I really wanted, shows I felt perfect for; and worked very hard to prepare. But I didn’t get them. There’s an intangible aspect within who you are and what you bring. It’s whether you fit the director’s vision or not. They know behind the table and I know within my heart whether it’s right or not. It’s a hard thing to deal with. I just want to work, show people what I’ve got. That’s what I love doing, exploring different worlds and putting it out there for people to experience so they can be taken on a journey. I just knew Harry was right for me, and prayed that I could show I was. It clicked!”
TV and film are wonderful, he said, “but nothing tops being on a stage in front of an audience. Working in front of the camera, you go on for 30 to 40 seconds and run that 100-yard dash because that take might be the take the director will use. With the stage, it’s about stamina, being able to pace yourself through the story to tell each individual moment as richly as possible. It makes my heart explode. Cruelty-free products as well as earth-safe ingredients go hand-in-hand with protecting the environment and earth’s inhabitants, including our furry friends. The rooms are funked up with pop art and pops of color and there’s Mr. Purple, an indoor/outdoor bar, on the 15th floor—as well as an outdoor pool. There’s security at the hotel’s street level entrance and an enormous lobby on the 14th floor with mouth-gaping views. Hotel Gansevoort Glam meets cobblestoned Meat Packing District at this hotel, home to Glam+Go’s blowout bar—think top hair stylists for 15-minute express blowouts and more. The Campbell A clandestine spot in majestic Grand Central Terminal that dates to 1923, it’s a taste of old New York opulence with a swanky speakeasy ambiance with a storied past; it was once the quarters of financier/railroad exec John W Campbell. Café Lalo Sip a cognac or cappuccino at this Upper West Side neighborhood café. With exposed brick walls it also served as a setting for You’ve Got Mail. Del Frisco’s Grille Brookfield Place It’s almost rosé season and the patio at this downtown steakhouse is a lovely, shady spot to sip an afternoon glass after a visit to the reflecting pools at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum and Battery Park. f you’re not particularly into gaming and gambling, or it’s your first time to a casino city like Atlantic City, it may dawn on you that when exiting elevators, instead of saying, “Have a nice day” guests at most hotels say “Good luck!” This writer had not been back to Atlantic City in 12 years. The first visit was to the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, which at the time was only four years old and then the following year to the opening of its Water Club Hotel in June 2008. This year the Borgata will celebrate its Sweet 16. Immersion Spa Pool
INSIDE THE BORGATA
The Borgata is located in the Marina District of Atlantic City. It has the mandatory slot machines, table games, Borgata Poker Room, Borgata Race & Sports Book (sports betting and off-track wagering). But there’s a lot more to do on the property. There are rooms and suites available at the Borgata and the Water Club Towers. If you want to stay in a less clamorous environment, your best bet is the Water Club. VIP check-in helps you avoid the crowds. The Water Club is smoke-free and quieter than being in the heart of the Borgata, but just take a short walk through the retail space (and perhaps a few dollars lighter) to find where the action is. The Water Club has 800 guest rooms and suites, the two-story Immersion Spa, six designer retail boutiques, meeting space and five heated indoor and outdoor pools. The Immersion Spa was totally booked when I recently visited, so I was off to Spa Toccare in the Borgata Tower, for the 50-minute Rock Your Senses treatment, a combination of Swedish massage, hot stone therapy, with the use of delightfully warm towels. Spa Toccare has two whirlpools, a steam room and sauna to enjoy before and after services.

Fine Dining There are several Iron Chef restaurants, including Wolfgang Puck American Grille, Angeline (Italian cuisine by Michael Symon), and Old Homestead Steak House, a classic steakhouse from chefs Marc and Greg Sherry. Also on hand is Bobby Flay Steak designed by David Rockwell to resemble being inside a cow. This may sound a bit unnerving, but the wood ceiling panels that resemble ribs and other features are rather clever. Chef Bobby Flay’s popular signature dish is Philadelphia-style Strip Steak—with good reason. The Provolone Cheese Sauce is mouth-watering delicious. The American cuisine menu also includes such tasty bites as Clams on the Half Shell, Tuna Tartare with classic garnishes, Baked Clams Barcelona, Lobster and Crispy Squid Salad, and of course, Lobster. The menu of Chef Michael Schulson’s Izakaya Sushi Restaurant is gleaned from his time in Japan and draws inspiration from traditional casual pubs of Japan known as izakayas. The menu includes sushi rolls, sashimi, robatayaki (Japanese-style BBQ), and edamame dumplings, from small plates to a full-tasting menu. The tasting menu of appetizers would have been enough!

Casual Dining If you don’t have time for a sit-down dinner, there are plenty of casual dining options. Here is a sampling of what you’ll find. In-room dining at the Water Club features a menu created by Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian, the hotel’s Culinary Lifestyle Consultant. The Sunroom The Water Club’s lobby lounge also has a menu created by Chef Zakarian. The Metropolitan A full cafe menu of contemporary and classic American dishes and Oyster Bar. Borgata Buffet (breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet offering pasta, seafood, carving stations, desserts by Chefs Thomas Biglan and Thaddeus Dubois. For shopping, there are retail stores at The Shoppes at the Water Club and the Retail Piazza at Borgata, and there are complimentary wine tastings on Saturdays at the Vintage Wine Boutique. If you want to venture off property, Atlantic City is known for its factory outlets.
ENTERTAINMENT
For entertainment, there is Borgata Comedy Club; Gypsy Bar, a rock n’ roll tequila bar with live music nightly; B Bar, a bar/lounge on the casino floor; Long Bar, with multiple flat screen TVs and the Event Center has concerts and other performances. Premier Nightclub, an 18,000 square foot club with tiered booths is a beautiful space with a horseshoe shaped mezzanine and a fascinating, huge movable, colorchanging light fixture above the dance floor. Borgata makes a fun weekend getaway with plenty to do morning, noon and night. But it’s only the beginning. Borgata is growing with the construction of a new bar and sports wagering venue coming soon. SENSATIONAL SAINT LUCIA CARIBBEAN LAZING IN STYLE By Ruth J. Katz
t is clearly an unusual distinction to crow about: The Caribbean isle of Saint Lucia, a Windward Island of the Lesser Antilles, can brag about being home to the secondlargest number of Nobel Laureates per capita in the world. Not too bad for an island that is a mere 238 square miles, with a population of 190,000. St. Lucia is so proud of its two Laureates, that annually, it devotes the entire month of January to a Nobel Laureate Festival, with no less than two dozen educational and celebratory events sprinkled throughout the island. For the record, these two eminences grises are Sir William Arthur Lewis, who took the prize in 1979 for Economics and Sir Derek Walcott, who garnered his laudatory plaudits in 1992, for literature. There is so much more to enjoy, savor, and celebrate on Saint Lucia than the Nobel Laureate Festival. Of course, there are all the usual water sports—snorkeling, scuba-diving, paddleboarding, parasailing, and the list goes on. It is no wonder that Saint Lucia receives more than 400,000 visitors a year, and was voted the World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination at the World Travel Awards last year. 34 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | APRIL 2019

WHAT TO SEE & DO Not into water-centric activities? This West Indies islet nirvana offers some unique pastimes and attractions: Notable is the stimulating and soothing Soufrière Sulfur Springs, a hot springs and volcano (fear not, it last erupted over 200 years ago), where a soak in the hot, mineral-rich mud baths might just bring a renewed youthful glow to your skin. It is exhilarating to immerse yourself in the hot gook that comes from the volcano; then scrub down with more mud, and ultimately soak in the hot springs. Finally, a refreshing shower…and a new you! An adrenaline-charged activity might include zip-lining in the Morne Coubaril Historical Adventure Park, where you can glide through the heavens, metaphorically, in the shadow of the landmark Petit Piton, one of the two massive volcanic spires that are iconic to Saint Lucia. This “baby” Piton is a towering 2,438 feet high, and its sister, the Gros Piton, a bit taller, at 2,530 feet. Their lush, verdant silhouettes tower over the island from their perch near the city of Sourfrière. It is interesting to note that 80 percent of the island is uninhabited, and is protected national land. If you’d rather spend quality time with Mother Nature on terra firma, then consider a hike in the rainforest or along the Tet Paul Nature Trail. The latter features a guided trail (it’s a 45-minute hike), dotted with exotic flora, and punctuated with breathtaking views. Diamond Falls and Botanical Gardens is also a treat to visit. For slightly different flavors—literally—there are rum and cocoa plantation tours. Or, take off for Pigeon Island, which is under the aegis of the Saint Lucia National Trust, and connected to the northern tip of the island by a causeway. There you’ll find the ruins of forts constructed during a time when Europeans fought over this territory. Of course, Saint Lucia is also famous for its world class annual Jazz Festival. This year Jazz at Lincoln Center is joining this already popular celebration of music to create a more electrifying event (May 4th through 12th). Info: stlucia.org/experiences. Landings Living Room
WHERE TO STAY The Landings Resort & Spa, near the Pigeon Island Causeway on Gros Islet, is part of the Elegant Hotels Group, and offers a sublime sanctuary. Built in 2007, the 85 condo units are spacious, gracious, and all have a water view. There are one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments handsomely furnished with Wi-Fi, cable TV, and wellappointed kitchens. Of course, there is also room service (because who really wants to cook while on vacation?), from the fabulous kitchen that caters to guests in the outdoor, waterside dining facilities, The Beach Club and the Callaloo Beach Bar & Grill and in the more elegant dining room, The Palms. My condo had a front terrace overlooking one of the resort’s several pools, and a rear terrace (over 800 square feet!) with a hot tub, above the serene marina. For families, there is a fun Kids’ Club to keep wee ones engaged. For the grown-ups there are kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, snorkeling gear, and tennis courts, among the included amenities. Want more of a workout than tennis? Visit the well-equipped fitness center; and if you want someone else to get the workout while you luxuriate, visit the 7,000-square-foot spa, where some treatment rooms have outdoor hydrotherapy terraces. NEW YORK CITY, NY
The Easter Parade Manhattan comes alive with spring colors and flowery bonnets as part of the annual Easter Parade. Visitors and residents have the opportunity to view these “works of art” wander along Fifth Avenue from 49th to 57th Streets, which run from 10 am to 4 pm. This annual tradition has been taking place for over 130 years, and while some things have changed, some traditions remain steadfast. The tradition of dressing up for the event started when women donned their finest hats and dresses and decorated the churches with flowers to celebrate the day. However, as the years passed, the Easter Parade became more about extravagance. Today, the parade incorporates the annual Bonnet Festival—where you can witness a fun-filled day of creative expression. Semana Santa Seville has been holding its Easter week celebrations since the 16th century, and they have become universally famous. One of the biggest Easter celebrations takes place in Seville, where 52 different religious brotherhoods parade through the streets manifesting the Crucifixion, with thousands watching the daily processions of marching bands and decorated candlelit floats of Baroque statues illustrating the Easter story. heers, dears! Behold, the rites (and rights!) of Spring. It’s been a long winter, so this month Bailey is giving you permission to indulge as your reward. So, hang up that scarf and get ready to scarf down this installment of B&B. A culinary road show starts our journey, followed by my monthly Beauty Report to keep you svelte, neat and sweet. Sometimes you need a little guilty pleasure. Bailey finds his at Pig Beach, an over-the-top den of barbecued gluttony in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn. The brain child of Chef ’s Matt Abdoo from Del Posto and Shane McBride of Balthazar and Augustine, Pig Beach offers an “alchemy” of barbecuing ingenuity, highlighting Italian, French, Middle Eastern, Asian and, of course, American techniques and ingredients. Think NYC-style pastrami, Za’tar Rubbed Leg of Lamb, Yuzu Glazed Smoked Duck or tried and true Buffalo chicken wings. Bailey particularly enjoyed the Pork Shoulder, drizzled with hatch vinegar sauce and the Pig Beach signature rub, as well as Yankee Red Hot Sausage, stuffed with provolone and hot cherry peppers. Its emphasis on wood-fire cooking and sourcing by local purveyors, sustainable seafoods and market fresh produce give Pig Beach a festive neighborhood vibe, made even more festive by a beer, cocktail and wine menu dominated by local breweries and distilleries. It’s the perfect, no-judgement locale for after-work gatherings or weekend gorge fests with friends or family. But no photos—barbecue sauce is not a flattering color this (or any season). You’ve indulged, now it’s time to... indulge again! The hottest sustainable, healthy and gastronomic restaurant this season is Farmer’s Table in Boca Raton, FL. The eatery, started by real estate developer Mitchell Robbins and Chef Joey Giannuzzi, concentrates on fresh, seasonal ingredients in their purest form, devoid of excess fat, salt, processing, toxins and all the other extras you don’t want. They call it their “Never Ever” menu: diners will never find any chemical, hormone, pesticide or antibiotics in our proteins—they don’t even have a deep fat fryer or microwave! “I have always eaten simply and conscientiously,” says Robbins. “I like to know the sources of my food— that it was grown cleanly and sustainably. I like fresh fruits, vegetables and grains in their simplest form.” Farmer’s Table’s even boasts a “Scratch Kitchen” – 95 percent of its dishes are made from scratch. Says Chef Giannuzzi, “A great chef once told me, ‘The chef who manages the most details well has the best kitchen and therefore the best food.’” He’s not kidding! Favorites include Spasta” & Meatballs featuring a choice of chicken or vegan meatballs, spaghetti squash, organic spinach and tomato basil sauce. Also try the Grilled Chicken Paillard with arugula, grape tomatoes, shaved Parmesan cheese, red onions and lemon-oregano vinaigrette. Also included on the menu are salads, flatbreads and hand-crafted cocktails with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. The restaurant serves grass-fed beef, free-range chicken and sustainable seafood that adheres to the Environmental Working Groups “Dirty Dozen” clean food philosophy. “I like using quality ingredients that only need a brush of olive oil or sea salt to really shine,” says Giannuzzi, “I like paying attention to sustainability and environmental issues that come along with procuring food. Tickle that palate with homemade sweets! Bailey was particularly charmed by a Washington D.C. bakery called Buttercream, which has gained both a local and national fanbase with its fresh baked, warm-from-the-oven delicacies. Guests savor its daily roster of pies, bars, cupcakes and cookies, as well as French macarons in a variety of flavors (Nutella to lavender-lemon to rosewater-raspberry jam). Particularly popular are its Stuffed Breakfast Bomb (scrambled eggs, melty cheese, freshly made sausage, delicious milk bread), Queen B (buttercream croissant with sugar and sea salt laminated into the layers) and Cinnascone (buttermilk scone dough filled with a mixture of butter, sugar and cinnamon topped with a cinnamon sugar glaze). At the core of its delicious treats is an Italian Meringue-style buttercream made by whipping butter into a creamy meringue rather than adding powdered sugar to butter, which results in a smooth, silky frosting. The geniuses behind this sugary haven are pastry chef Tiffany MacIsaac and her business partner and lead decorator Alex Mudry-Till, who have made Buttercream the most popular, beloved bakeshop in the Capital and beyond. They made national headlines last month with an order for 150 custom Faberge Eggs, which they created with flavors like Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Ganache and Chocolate Buttercream and Almond Cake with Strawberry Jam and Strawberry Buttercream. The attention to detail was evident in every step—from hand-painting the molded gumpaste appliques gold to the non-toxic varnish on each egg. uch as machines augmented and replaced some of the necessary home cleaning and management tasks in the 19th and 20th centuries (think the creation of the washing machine, refrigerator, fan, and vacuum cleaner), so robots are poised to become the helpers of the 21st century. But technology is catching up. Here, some of the robots which were presented at the GBK Gift Lounge for the Academy Awards in Los Angeles and CES 2019 and will soon be at a home near you!

Roomba i7+ The Roomba i7+ is probably the most sophisticated robot vacuum cleaner available today, boasting a docking station which not only enables the vacuum to recharge but also disposes of dirt into a bag. The vacuum also has sophisticated navigation and mapping technology which allows it to detect rooms and for the user to set a recurring schedule room by room. The Roomba also has three cleaning modes enabling it to handle various floor surfaces (hardwood, carpet, etc.) and at a little under 4 inches in height, the Roomba can clean under the sofa for eternity. Automower Husqvarna—better known for their Swedish old-school axes and chainsaws—have come to the rescue and developed a robot to manage that age-old task of mowing the lawn. The Husqvarna Automower can be controlled by a phone app as well as voice command via Amazon Alexa to mow your lawn as required; when low on power it will return to the unit to recharge itself. The Automower can also aid lawn development as it cuts the blades of grass a little at a time enabling the clippings to fertilize the soil—translating into more time to work on the golf swing. The Personal Robot Debuting at the GBK Oscar Gift Lounge 2019, the Temi The Personal Robot incorporates the use of Amazon’s Alexa with a highly sophisticated indoor navigation system which enables hands-free video calls and more. Aibo One of the older home-orientated robots celebrating its 20th anniversary this year is Sony’s Aibo a robotic pet dog. While this seems a nonsensical idea, imagine it as being ideal for a child who suffers from severe allergies or an individual for whom the tasks of keeping a pet are difficult, or too time-consuming. The latest iteration of the Aibo has an array of touch sensors to react to being stroked as well as sensors for detecting its interaction with objects. he Upper West Side (UWS) is the perfect location if you love to exercise, enjoy that quiet neighborhood feel, and want to get away from the downtown hustle and bustle. The UWS spans the length of Central Park, from 59th to 110th Streets) and west to the Hudson River where the city boasts some of the most beautiful pathways for long walks, runs, bike rides, and picnics. It’s also the place where you see the city in transition: Pre-war brownstones and townhouses nestle on blocks alongside luxurious condos Yes, the west side of Central Park has some of the most expensive and sought-after residential apartments in the world. We all know about The Dakota and San Remo co-ops that reign supreme on Central Park West, so let’s get to know the neighborhood and discover some newer developments and conversions.
WHAT TO SEE & DO
Central Park is not the only escape on the west side. Head over to Riverside Park (also designed by Frederick Law Olmsted) with its welcome strip of greenery stretching three miles and plenty of space for jogging, tennis, and baseball. My other go-to spot is Sushi Kaito on West 72nd Street. The 15-seat omakase-style restaurant allows diners to sit at the chef ’s counter. Note: There are only three seatings per night and diners have the option of a 12-piece or 16-piece omakase. Each meal includes miso soup, a hand roll, and a slice of excellent tamago (rolled Japanese omelet). I always recommend that before the first property is seen, buyers meet with a financial adviser. It is important that they have a firm understanding of their personal financial position and long-term obligations to ensure that they are not purchasing beyond their means. How long does it take to buy a home? While there are certainly exceptions, I usually find that from the first home seen to closing can take about a year. How much do I need for a down payment? In general, buyers should anticipate a 20 to 25 percent down payment, but that does vary between by property type and even by buildings. Should I sell my current home before buying a new one? Selling a current property before purchasing a new one is truly dependent on the buyer’s financial circumstance. How many homes should I view before buying one? Working with buyers, I recommend that they view 15 properties before making an offer. Each neighborhood, street, and even apartment within the same building is going to offer something a little different whether it be layout, finishes or views. Real estate is a significant purchase and it is important for buyers to take their time in the process and find a property that checks all of their “must-have” boxes. How long can the seller take to respond to my offer? A seller should typically respond to an offer within 24 to 48 hours maximum. What if my offer is rejected? If it is a property that you truly love, I recommend going back to the seller with a higher offer; but if you felt that you bid enough, it is time to move on to other opportunities. Should I order a home inspection? In general, an inspection is not necessary for New York City cooperatives and condominiums that do not have a terrace. f you’re in the market for a sleek luxury sedan with some serious oomph, consider the Genesis Motor America G70. “Genesis?” you may ask, having not heard much about this relatively new car manufacturer. Around since its conception in 2008, Genesis is the luxury automotive arm of Hyundai, which took until 2016 to launch its first vehicle in the U.S. It took them a couple of years, but now there’s little doubt that Genesis has a real winner on its hands. Their 2019 G70, the third Genesis released into the American market, is piling up an impressive list of awards, starting with Car and Driver magazine naming it one of their 10 Best and also garnering 2019 MotorTrend Car of the Year on the sedan. Add in Cars.com calling it their Best of 2019, and MotorWeek annointing it their Driver’s Choice Best Luxury Car and this Genesis vehicle is really riding high. The G70 also took home the industry’s top award, chosen as the 2019 North American Car of the Year, leaving little doubt that this four-door sedan has something incredibly special about it.

We loved the Sport mode, which made it roar like a jungle beast and leap ahead, while still maintaining complete road control. The Comfort mode is perfect for city driving, more relaxed and easygoing than Sport, but still very responsive and ready to move quickly when asked. The Eco mode saves a bit of gasoline, which is one of the G70’s only drawbacks, getting a paltry 22 mph city and 30 mph on the highway. We looked at the telltale signs of aging and the lifestyle and treatment options Dr. Preminger offers to her patients: Toxic Overload We live in a world where our exposure to pollution is unavoidable. Even diet and lifestyle can contribute to toxic overload. It is never too late to stop the damage. Drinking adequate amounts of water, limiting soda consumption, wearing sunscreen daily, eating a healthy diet, using quality skin care products, and keeping up with regular treatments for skin damage such as laser therapy, chemical peels, facials and routine facials maintenance can slow, and often times, reverse the signs of aging resulting from toxic overload. hitening your teeth creates a great impression, so it’s not surprising that this dental procedure is so popular today. But with an abundance of information and so many options available—in office and at home—it’s hard to know what is right and which procedure is the best one for you. There are many misconceptions about teeth whitening. We visited Dr. Timothy Chase who remains on the forefront of the latest advance in restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Upon graduation from Boston University School of Dental Medicine, he continued his education by completing a general practice residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Hospital before joining SmilesNY where he specializes in cosmetic and implant dentistry. In addition to continually enhancing his own education as a cosmetic dentist in New York, Dr. Chase is a dedicated educator. Whitening causes nerve damage Done properly at home or under the supervision of a professional, whitening your teeth does not affect the roots, gums, or inside of the teeth. This misconception originated from unregulated levels of hydrogen peroxide which caused damage to nerve and pulp. Teeth whitening treatments are painful While the whitening may cause your gums and teeth to be somewhat sensitive, the procedure is not at all painful. When hydrogen peroxide comes in contact with teeth it may cause transient sensitivity, that usually goes away in a day. The process will keep your smile white forever While whitening your teeth will brighten a smile. However, teeth will return to their original shade over time depending on your diet and other factors so touchups will be needed. Professional treatments are better than at-home whiteners Both professional and at-home procedures can produce great results if done correctly. One benefit of having the whitening done in a professional environment is the ability to ensure your teeth will respond well. Plus, it’s a faster process in the dentist office. At-home whitening strips are not as strong since they cannot control where the material flows like they can in the dental office. Therefore, for a faster and better result, I recommend a dental professional who will create a custom-made tray using a stronger whitening material. And for the fastest results, I offer zoom-in office whitening which takes about an hour.
Teeth whitening damages enamel Although in the past this was a concern, studies by The Journal of American Dental Association state that teeth whitening treatments do not increase the chances of damaging tooth enamel. Teeth whitening will give you an instantly movie-star smile Real life does not include Photoshop. Therefore the shade of your teeth isn’t paper white, as seen in commercials, TV or magazines. Teeth whitening can remove stains and lighten teeth but will not make your teeth an unnatural white. ow many times has this happened to you? You start a weight loss program, include exercise and several weeks later reach a plateau. The scale refuses to budge and as a consequence gets shelved. SPRING IS HERE! By Peter M. Kalellis
ften considered one of the most beautiful times of the year, Spring brings about a feeling of renewal and is an essential aspect of life. With the arrival of the season, the world awakens to the brilliance of nature. It revives us all with its warm and cheerful ways. A flood of skin-tingling warmth suddenly consumes you, and everything shines with a fresh, colorful glow, making you forget that anything as cold and harsh as winter ever existed. My concern is how to find a few simple words to thank God for giving me life for another day and another Spring season? At this point, I have to confess that some mornings, I find myself either tired or moody and fail to do what is needed. Mornings usually come too quickly. I have to move fast…wash up, grab a bite to eat, and run. But sometimes I don’t feel like it. What I want to do is get back into bed. Quite frankly, I ask myself, where am I running? I don’t know. Then regaining my senses, I say, what counts most is just that somebody may know. At that very moment I think of my father who is no longer around to consult. But memory momentarily brings him back.
NATURE IN FULL FORCE
I was eight years old when I saw my father mercilessly cutting out mercilessly short and long branches of a big tree. He called this pruning. I felt sad when I saw that big beautiful fig tree reduced to a smaller size. “Dad, why did you cut away so many branches of the fig tree?” It was that special tree that I used to climb up to find the best and delicious figs. “Wait until Spring, when this tree will be rejuvenated and will bear an abundance of fruit,” my father said proudly. To my big surprise, it did. Springtime came, and nature in full force proved that my father’s words were on target. The fig tree brought us an abundance of delicious figs throughout the entire summer. Now, this 93-year-old finds pruning trees as a metaphor in my life. As I take an inventory each day, I need to focus on things of importance and let go of what is unimportant. Whenever I feel tired or exhausted for being overextended, I think of pruning. I try to simplify my life, which is an excellent place to start. In addition to trimming the externals of my life, so I can live in a manageable way, I must do some inner pruning. When I feel overwhelmed, I take a psychological and spiritual step back, a sort of inventory of my life. I begin to search for the motive, fears, expectations, and habits that are causing me discomfort. A good example is when I get angry, I ask myself why am I feeling this way? What is the source of my anger? I make an effort to diffuse my anger by confronting it. Anger is a multi-faced fury that bears directly on our attitude toward life, on our emotional climate, on our effectiveness, and, more often than not it affects our health. Anger, hate, hostility, resentment, aggression, violence, all derive from the same source.
LESSONS IN LIFE
Of course, various sources of the healing arts offer psychospiritual help. Indeed, each of the disciplines has its importance, and in time of need, each makes a significant contribution to health and life. Most important, these procedures often point out how human mistakes and failures provide the best lessons in life. Emotional availability to our significant others, family members and friends rely directly on our ability to prune poor motivations, so we are not prey to unrealistic expectations—either ours or those of others. When we do this the natural beauty of our life will spontaneously emerge and nurture others as well. Ultimately, we can prune away unrealistic expectations, to reveal the simple gifts that we possess. When we do this inner pruning, we are more likely to be aware of the blossoms and the fruit we will bring to those we encounter along the way. This first lesson on pruning relies on our ability to gain perspective by ensuring we are clear about our goals, especially when we are exerting more and more effort and feeling less and less satisfied by what we are doing. It is stepping back and reflecting on our motivations that make all the difference. Dear reader, you can do good things for yourself and others. An idea that can be supportive comes from Eleanor Roosevelt: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” And I can add, “Nobody has the power to deprive you of enjoying the 2019 Spring season. • APRIL 2019 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 77

ellari Taverna is a stand out among Manhattan’s Mediterranean eateries for a number of reasons: authenticity, friendly service that never gets intrusive, spacious atmosphere and a huge amount of menu choices. Speaking of atmosphere, the online photos of the woodpaneled main dining room with its large floral arrangements, seafood displays on ice and majestic light fixtures definitely look inviting—but you will be totally awestruck in person. The dining room is the perfect blend of traditional and modern with medium-hued wood abounding and the remarkably high vaulted ceilings. There is an underlying wine cellar-theme with barrels lining the area above the bar. Owner Stavros Aktipis arrived from Greece in his 20s and soon after opened his first eatery Evvia in Palo Alto, CA. It was here he met a New Yorker whom he eventually married and together they moved east. He also thought that it was as good a time as any to expand his restaurant empire. Today, there are a total seven restaurants that make up the Kellari Hospitality Group. New York Lifestyles asked Aktipis to share the highlights of his hospitality career—so far. “I have been involved with many restaurants during the past 20 years. With Kellari, everything is Mediterranean related, you have to have great food and a great product, and that’s what I try to do. Coming from Greece, everything is grilled merely using lemon, herbs and olive oil.” Aktipis’ passion for food is unrelenting. “I want guests to leave knowing they were treated with excellent hospitality. Look around Kellari Taverna and you see a great diversity of patrons— an after-work bar crowd, families dining together, friends celebrating birthdays or about to go to the theater, and couples wanting quality time together. Aktipis says, “Some of the regulars have their own needs regarding the size of tables, and the staff connects well with everyone. The wait staff, hostesses and bartenders know the regulars by name.” Not surprisingly, Kellari Taverna has had many VIP guests including former Mayor Bloomberg. The restaurant does play it cool when a politician or celebrity visits—all clientele is treated equally special and “like family.” Aktipis comments, “Bloomberg was a friendly guy. And, of course, we try not to make a big deal about it. We have had movies filmed here as well. Kellari is very low key as we want everyone to return!” And they do return. Kellari’s fresh and healthy cuisine is tops with New Yorkers and visitors alike who crave the classic Mediterranean menu. The restaurant owner states, “It’s not the fresh and healthy reputation that makes Mediterranean food popular, I think that it’s the classic flavor. It is, however, healthy by nature as we use olive oil, lemon, and herbs for everything. The freshness and flavor stand out. It has a relaxing feel to it. There is a comfort level there as well.”

A FARM TO TABLE EXPERIENCE
Kellari Taverna offers a first-class farm to table experience and since it has an immense selection of fresh seafood that is presented to the guest before cooking, let’s also say that it provides an “ocean to table” encounter as well. The Dover Sole is considered in a league by itself, and it’s truly a show when your server so neatly debones your fish in under two minutes into a presentation with a big “wow factor.” Aktipis is definitely hands-on and is proud of Kellari being “farm to table” and using local produce and meat vendors. He says, “We only use top quality produce and meat that’s seasonal. We want all guests here to see that.” Kellari has several unique dishes being added for Easter and the Spring season. Aktipis tells us with excitement, “We go in with the seasonal approach to find the best foods. For Easter, we will offer fresh seafood dishes and do the traditional lamb roasted on a spit on the sidewalk. We love doing that annually for the holiday.”

ARIEL FOX OF DOS CAMINOS RESTAURANT By Patricia Canole
riel Fox, who was just crowned the winner of FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen, is an incredibly accomplished chef having spent time innovating some of the most prestigious kitchens in the industry. She helped to launch several nationally renowned restaurants including STK, Harding’s and ACME. The talented chef even “took flight” when she joined the OTG Management team where she helped revolutionize and elevate airport dining concepts for the $100 million United Airlines Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport. Today, Ariel is the proud Concept Executive Chef at Dos Caminos where she creates award-winning menus for appreciative diners. Her culinary philosophy stems back to her teenage years in Northern California, where she spent some time working for the small, family-run Mariquita Farm in Watsonville. It was here that the teenaged Ariel was introduced to sustainable food movement pioneer, Alice Waters, a local restaurateur and frequent customer of the San Francisco Farmers Market. Waters sparked Ariel’s profound appreciation for organic agriculture and seasonal food. We wanted to know more about the gifted chef who is rapidly cementing her place in the New York restaurant scene.

How did you come into cooking? I grew up in Santa Cruz California, in the Monterey Bay where California farming was all around me. My family also loved to travel, thus experiencing different foods at a very young age. Since my parents both worked late, we often ate dinner at restaurants. I didn’t realize this at the time, but that was not the norm for most families. I had a respect for restaurants that most children didn’t have. But it wasn’t until I started working on an organic farm in high school that I truly fell in love with food. It was while working there at the source, digging and picking, and eventually selling the produce at the Farmers Market, that I understood the magic of food. And of course, my grandmother and mother were both amazing home cooks! Describe your first experience in a kitchen? My first experience in a real professional kitchen was just out of culinary school where I landed my first gig at Globe, Venice Beach. It was here that I learned to shuck oysters. This was my very first task, and I did it every day all day. It was painful, and it was endless. But it taught me so much. Little by little I got faster and faster and could do it without breaking the shells. Eventually, I became a master at it! Then I moved on to making pasta every day, then bread, and so on... Who was your teacher? My first real teacher was a Robert who was a chef de cuisine at Globe—and he was tough! He expected excellence, speed, cleanliness, and dedication. I ate up every minute of it. It’s because of him I was able to get promoted up the chain so quickly. As your career flourished, who were some other mentors? There are so many, but the first few that come to mind are Larry Nicola of Nic’s in Beverly Hills, Todd Marc Miller of STK, and Mads Refslund of ACME. There are so many more though! Tell us about your Hell’s Kitchen experience. Was it a challenge to be in front of the cameras? Yes! But I soon realized the cameras are what make me perform at my best! I knew that at any moment something could go wrong. In that chaos I was at my best and able to produce on a whole other level. What was the hardest part of being a contestant chef? The hardest part for me was trying to outdo myself while also trying to do something I’ve never done before. I didn’t play it safe and didn’t second guess myself—especially with other competitors around you. I just tuned them out and stayed on track to focus. My motto: Commit to something and don’t change your mind. Now that you’re back home in Dos Caminos tell us how you put together a winning menu? Whether it’s for a competition or a restaurant, it’s all about giving people something balanced but still exciting. There has to be something comfortable and familiar to keep them grounded. But there also has to be something new and different that keeps them intrigued. If you can live on that edge of what people know and what they may have never seen, or thought of, you will keep your guests happy and coming back. Eating should feel wild and comfortable all at once!

What does it take to be a successful chef in New York City? You have to stay on top of the trends. Period. No matter what cuisine you do, you can still stay on trend. It’s a social mediadriven world now, and if you aren’t paying attention, you aren’t doing your job as a chef. It’s no longer a world of just cooking what you want to cook. Turkish restaurant this good is hard to find anywhere. So say the loyal diners who frequent the Upper East Side’s Uskudar. Now in its 30th year, the intimate restaurant—named in honor of the seventh century city on the Bosperous—is incredibly welcoming to guests. After a while it seems like every table is in a party mood enjoying the hospitality, food and wine. “My three brothers and I worked in Istanbul hotels from the time I was 13,” notes founder and executive chef Ibrahim Ozdemir, known to a long list of happy customers as Chef Ibrahim. “I apprenticed, baked bread, and was pastry chef at the historic Pera Palace Hotel in the heart of Istanbul. The chef was very demanding because of the clientele with a who’s who list of icons including Ernest Hemingway and Agatha Christie.”

From there, Ozdemir worked in top European hotels. He arrived in the U.S. in 1987. “I was already a seasoned chef,” he says. “It’s all I knew, so that was the way I would have to make my living. There were Mediterranean restaurants, so I had to do something different. Lamb, long the staple of our diets, was disappearing from menus. I made it my specialty. I know lamb. I am very particular and will only accept the best.” To this day, Chef Ibrahim spends his mornings shopping for the freshest provisions and the afternoon and night in the kitchen. At Uskudar he prides himself on serving traditional family recipes, some of which go back 700 years. Marketing manager Jacob Bare says, “There are chicken, seafood, and vegetarian options, but the majority of our patrons come for the lamb. And they come from near and far. Other than the outstanding variety of lamb dishes, another reason might be that we’ve managed to keep prices reasonable for years.” The large Mediterranean meze platter is a must and consists of Yalanci Dolma (stuffed vine leaves), Spinach Tarator (with minced walnuts, yogurt), Fasulye Pilaki (braised white kidney beans), and Ezme (tomato and walnut spread). Other popular starters include Cacik (chilled yogurt, shaved cucumber, garlic and dill), Borek (crispy panfried phyllo rolls, crumbled feta and spinach), and Red Lentil Soup. Lamb is the staple here where chef favorites include Hunkarbegendi (lamb cubes stewed in tomato sauce, served on a bed of eggplant puree, with herbs, rice and veggies), Lamb Shish, lamb shank, Kofte (chargrilled ground lamb patties). Other entrees include Chicken Shish, a chicken and okra casserole, and Chicken Artichoke. A WINNER THEN AND NOW The winner of the first-ever Tony Award for Best Musical, the show has been updated to make Lilli more of an equal, after all it dates from 1949 and times have changed. Fans will welcome back Kelli O’Hara who has not appeared on Broadway since she won a Tony for her performance as Anna in The King and I. Four years later, she’s back in this fresh, new, and even empowering version of Kiss Me Kate. The great Cole Porter score and the wonderful classic humor remain but the women in the show have more space to stand up for themselves, Kelli O’Hara observes, adding “Lilli is a woman behaving with intelligence and with class but is commenting on what she’s surrounded by. She’s not just crazy.” ROMANCE MADE MODERN Today’s times are not prim and proper and the show reflects this modern era, not holding anything back. The revival is timely in its look at misogynistic behavior that’s being reexamined in light of #me-too, but humor is never lost as this theatrical play within a play made more contemporary now with new material by Amanda Green. For Kelli O’Hara, playing Lilli playing Kate is “layering these two women on top of each other. I like to think of Lilli as much more of a shell— much more vulnerable, more insecure—whereas I think of Kate as a woman who knows a lot, one enhances the other. Kate gives Lilli voice when she’s hurt and angry, and Lilli eventually gives Kate a softness and understanding.” Spunky and fierce though Kate may be, she’s still looking for love in this comic rollercoaster romance. The Roundabout Theatre production of Kiss Me Kate! is directed by Scott Ellis with choreography by David Chase, costumes by Jeff Mashie and sets by David Rockwell, it is slated to run through June 2nd. 86 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | APRIL 2019
AIN’T TOO PROUD: The Life and Times of The Temptations
Imperial Theatre From the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Ain’t Too Proud electrifies us as we become engrossed in the rise and fall of The Temptations, the mighty Motown hit machine. This new jukebox musical which broke house records in California at Berkley Rep and in D.C. at The Kennedy Center, arrives on Broadway this Spring with irresistible life. It’s only natural to want to sing (and probably dance too) along to favorites including “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Get Ready,” “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me,” “War” and of course, “My Girl,” among the 31 songs in this show that never stops moving or dazzling.

Sergio Trujillo’s choreography does more than recreate this group’s signature dance moves, it reinvents them brilliantly lifting this jukebox musical into another realm. THE UPS AND DOWNS The story takes us through the ups and downs, onstage and off, entertaining consistently as we learn how this fab five met, the groundbreaking heights they hit and how personal and political conflicts threatened to tear them apart as the United States fell into civil unrest. It wasn’t all harmony within The Temptations. The difficult relationship between two of the five “classic” Temptations, Otis Williams (played by Derrick Baskin) and David Ruffin (Ephraim Sykes), becomes the center of the show, with Baskin serving as the far from volatile narrator. (The 2012 memoir by Williams, the last survivor among the original group members, is the basis of the musical.) Sykes’s intense, ego-driven Ruffin struggles with the dictation of the group’s homogeneous style and Williams demand for shared credit—an issue that plagued the group, with 24 men rotating through over the past six decades. Despite the simmering internal conflict, The Temptations produced 42 Top Ten Hits with 14 reaching number one, many written by Smokey Robinson and Norman Whitfield. Ain’t Too Proud is a story of brotherhood, family, loyalty, and betrayal. Smooth though their sound was, turmoil raged behind The Temptations seemingly slick façade. Their success was extraordinary and they were for a time a worldwide sensation (the show takes us from their start in the 1960s to 1974) but it’s lonely at the top and as we see in this exceptional and exciting show not so easy to sustain success. Ain’t Too Proud written by threetime Obie Award winner Dominique Morisseau, directed by twotime Tony Award® winner Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys) and featuring choreography by Tony nominee Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys, On Your Feet), brings the untold story of this legendary quintet to Broadway. AVENGERS: ENDGAME Not yet rated Every Marvel movie fan on the planet knows that Avengers: Endgame is coming in April, following up on the cliffhanger we all saw in Avengers: Infinity War. This flick brings it all together, with the remaining Avengers who made it through alive out to band together to stop the evil Thanos (James Brolin) from taking over the universe. Stars you will see this time out include Brie Larson, Chris Evans, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd and many more. HELLBOY Rated: R Hellboy, the half-demon comic-book hero, returns to the big screen after a 10-year hiatus with a new actor inside the bright-red body that boasts super-strength and disease immunity (among other powers). Stranger Things TV series regular David Harbour stars, taking over from Ron Perlman, in this wild, half comedic, half otherworldly serious tale that pits Hellboy against an ancient sorceress (Milla Jovovich). Expect lots of action and a pretty outrageous plot full of special effects here. SHAZAM! Rated: PG-13 He first appeared in a comic book in 1940, when seven-year-old Billy Batson discovered that by yelling “Shazam!” he would be transformed into a superhero named Captain Marvel who was still a kid inside. Now that DC Comics duo, Batson and Shazam! (as his alter ego is now named) star in a fun tongue-in-cheek take on the action-hero genre. Billy is now a teen; the seriously charming Zachary Levi (Chuck, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) brings Shazam to life; and Mark Strong brings the requisite evil needed into the goofy mix.
FUN FOR THE KIDS MISSING LINK Rated: PG The newest stop-animation flick from the genius minds at Laika, Missing Link is everything kids (and adults, come on!) love – a quest filled with funny lines, a famous adventurer out to solve one of the world’s great mysteries and a gigantic creature who is most likely the Missing Link of legend. With the voices of Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, Zack Galifianakis, Emma Thompson and Timothy Olyphant, this one’s likely to join Laika’s Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings as an animation classic. 88 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | APRIL 2019
PENGUINS Rated: G Disney Nature strikes again on Earth Day, with this charming look at Steve, a real-life penguin whose existence in Antarctica is a continuing adventure. In the same vein as Disney’s previous animal explorations (Bears, Chimpanzee), this combination of science study with a story of searching for the perfect mate while avoiding the pitfalls and dangers of the world around him strikes just the right balance of fun and learning for kids of every age. STORM BOY Rated: PG A remarkable story of a young boy and the pelican he rescues, Storm Boy is based on the best-selling and much-beloved Australian children’s book written by Colin Thiele in 1964. In this second filming of the story (which has also been adapted into a play), Jai Courtney stars as the boy’s gruff father and Finn Little and Geoffrey Rush share the role of Storm Boy, as a youngster and an elderly man.

RED JOAN Rated: R Red Joan is a fictional tale based on the story of real-life British traitor Melita Nor wood, a scientist and civil servant who sold secrets to the Russians for more than forty years. Set mostly in post-World War II, this taut drama moves expertly between Joan’s life as a young w om a n ( p l ay e d by S op h i e Cookson) acting as a spy to her older life, when she is found out and arrested. Judi Dench plays the older Joan, who recalls the whys of her successful deceptions. THE WHITE CROW Rated: R When actor-director Ralph Fiennes found his The White Crow lead actor, he couldn’t even speak English and had never acted. But Oleg Ivenko is a swooningly handsome professional ballet dancer, a Ukrainian based in Russia, and the perfect man to play Rudolph Nureyev, the legendary dancer who defected to the West from Russia in 1961. BACK TO THE PAST FOSSE/VERDON FX Broadway show lovers, rejoice! For when Fosse/Verdon hits your TV set, you’ll be mesmerized by Sam Rockwell as Bob Fosse and Michelle Williams as Gwen Verdon, the powerhouse, multiple Tony Award-winning couple that brought the world shows like Redhead, Sweet Charity and Chicago. Produced by their daughter Nicole Fosse and Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, this eight-episode biopic is sure to have you dancing in your living room. THE TWILIGHT ZONE CBS All Access Jordan Peele is hitting on all cylinders these days, after winning the Oscar for his hit film Get Out’s screenplay last year. Now he’s taking over from Rod Serling with a reboot of the much-loved 1960s TV series The Twilight Zone. Peele produces and narrates this weird and wonderful show filled with strange plots that span numerous genres in “another dimension.” He’s sure to have some horror episodes, following Get Out and his new film Us, both seriously scary stories that he both wrote and directed. WARRIOR Cinemax It’s just after the American Civil War as this tough series begins in San Francisco, where the denizens of its Chinatown embark on the bloody Tong Wars for control of the city. Filled with martial arts action and based on Bruce Lee’s ideas, this brutal drama stars Andrew Koji as an enforcer for one of the strongest Chinese gangs (tongs). He will stop at nothing to make his tong the victor in the fight for control of the city’s organized crime, which means lots of beating up people as the series progresses.
COMIC SITUATIONS BLESS THIS MESS ABC Lake Bell produces, writes and stars in this fish-out-of-water comedy that sends a newlywed city couple off to Nebraska to take up farming. If it sounds a bit like Green Acres, the difference is that both of the just marrieds are in for the change. Dax Shepard co-stars as Bell’s husband in the adventure, while favorites like Pam Grier and Ed Begley Jr. round out the cast of this sitcom. 90 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | APRIL 2019
RAMY Hulu Ramy Youssif (Mr. Robot) stars in this sitcom as an Egyptian-American living in New Jersey, the son of immigrants living in a mostly Muslim community. He’s pretty sure he’s living the American dream, but crazy comic situations and weird interactions may convince him otherwise. He’s hoping God is going to give him some guidance as he navigates this place where some are not so understanding of his faith and his point of view, but he mostly has to figure it all out on his own.
CRIMINAL CAPERS IN THE DARK CW In this dramedy, Perry Mattfield (Shameless) stars as a harddrinking blind woman who thinks she witnesses a murder. But there’s no body to be found, which sets her off (along with her seeing-eye dog) on an adventure to solve the crime, despite the fact that the cops and her friends are skeptical that the killing even happened. From producer Ben Stiller and others, this one treads a line between pathos and comedy, with a bit of old-fashioned whodunit thrown into the mix. THE CODE CBS If you still miss JAG, then The Code will be your favorite new show. This time, we’re with the Marines instead of the Navy, following cases that arise within the corps. Familiar faces like Dana Delany and Mira Sorvino lead the courtroom-drama cast of prosecutors, defense lawyers and judges who serve in the Marine’s Judge Advocate Corps, determining the crimes and punishments that are part of America’s military justice system. THE RED LINE CBS In this limited series executive produced by Ava DuVernay (Selma, Queen Sugar), three Chicago families deal with the death of a black doctor at the hands of a white police officer. As each family copes with the reverberations of this alltoo-common American occurrence, they begin to understand just how racial bias affects each one of their actions. From May 1st through 4th, this art show will be digitally exhibiting the work of artists from advertising on the LinkNYC network. As you may know LinkNYC is the first of its kind communications network that aims to replace over 7,500 pay phones across the five boroughs of New York City with “links” providing access to free public Wi-Fi, phone calls, cellphone charging via USB and an integrated tablet offering access to City services, maps and directions. Here, the top things you need to do to have a happy and healthy home together as the new season begins. It’s that time again for the annual ritual of spring cleaning. And for those of us that live with pets, the ritual not only includes our own stuff, it includes everything that our beloved four-legged best friend has spent the entire winter lying, rolling, chewing, and drooling on. Here are three easy ways to help you and your dog kick-start the new season you’ve both been waiting all winter long for. • Dogs have a tendency to hide their favorite things. • Food and water bowls often get overlooked because we rinse and refill them every day. Unfortunately, the fat found in your dog’s food is the perfect breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and a rinse is not nearly enough to kill what’s lurking in those bowls. If you don’t already really clean at least weekly, now is the perfect time to start. The best option for bowls is either stainless steel or lead-free ceramic. Cleaning them daily in the dishwasher on “sanitize” or using a non-abrasive cloth with Skout’s Honor toy and bowl cleaner will do the trick. If you’re washing them by hand, be sure get down to the very bottom of the bowl where bacteria find the best hiding places and don’t forget to rinse well. ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER LEIF & ERIN FREY By Jenna Guarneri
or this team, it’s what you may call brotherly love. Literally! From a college basement, Leif and Erin Frey conceptualized, concocted, and launched their business. They wanted to create something that would change the way we look at laundry. FREY was born out of the idea to make clothing care an experience that’s a little more personal and a lot friendlier for both the environment and our clothing. With a modern line of laundry detergent and clothing care products that contain essential oils and natural fragrances, FREY has created a product unlike any on the market. We recently had the chance to sit down with the guys to chat about the brand and themselves and here’s what they had to say. Give us a bit of a backstory. Leif: We are from a small rural town in Maryland and graduated from the smallest public high school in the county. We graduated Ivy League, volunteered both in the U.S. and internationally, practiced as licensed EMT’s, played sports, enjoyed pushing ourselves, and loved helping others. But as we were starting FREY, we briefly went back home to Maryland where we made and filled our bottles by hand from our basement. Luckily, we are far past that point, and now have other people who handle every step of our production process, allowing us to focus on the big picture a little more. 98 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | APRIL 2019

What was the inspiration for FREY? Erin: There are two parts to this answer: The first is that when we went to college and started doing more of our laundry and selecting the laundry detergent, we realized most every person we knew was only using their detergent because it was their parents’ detergent of choice. There was very little variety, and very hard to choose something that resonated with us. Almost all the scents, designs, and advertisements were tailored to an outdated image of the type of person who did laundry several decades ago—in many ways perpetuating old stereotypes. Looking into it more, we also realized that many mainstream detergents contained harmful chemicals, harsh on both clothing and the environment. So we decided that we could do something about this, and give consumers a product to call their own because they like its specific design, scent, cleaning power, formulation, and the positive impact on the environment— and the world through our philanthropic programs. We decided that we could take our company to another level, and realized that we could evolve to be something more than just a detergent, but a full line of products designed to give people something they enjoy using. The second part of the story, however, is that my brother and I have always wanted to start a company together. We love each other and work well together and enjoy sharing in each other’s passions, so the dream of creating a company together began at an early age, as far back as when we were in elementary school, and we started making and selling bracelets by hand. Over the years, we came up with many ideas, but this was one that we thought was something that we wanted to use. When was the moment you decided to try your hands at being an entrepreneur? Leif: When we started getting some good press, and no longer had any time to do anything other than ship orders! At that point, we were able to take a step back, look at the bigger picture, and realize that what we were doing had far more potential than we may have initially expected. What is it like working with your brother? Erin: As brothers, we have been fortunate enough to play competitive sports together, go to school together (not college), travel the world together, and more. We’ve been through thick and thin, and now we’ve had the opportunity to start a business together, be on national TV together, and bring another level of adventure to our friendship. We haven’t met any siblings who are as close to each other as we are, and I think that’s one of the main reasons why we work so well together. It has always been him and me versus the world, and we still will have each other’s backs and each other’s best interests at heart.

You recently brought on a Co-founder and CTO. Tell us about him and your decision to make him a permanent part of the FREY team? Leif: He’s a rock star human being, and we’ve known Aidan Porter since we were kids. Our families were very close growing up, but we hadn’t seen/contacted each in over a decade until we launched FREY. He reached out (from halfway across the world in the UK) and started helping us. We knew from the beginning that we would eventually hire someone to handle our website, so his flexibility, enthusiasm, dedication, and his passion all made the decision to bring him on as our CTO was an easy one. We are close enough that we don’t hesitate to tell each other what we think, it minimizes politics and keeps everything on the table since we’re all working towards the same goal and we know and trust that each of us is doing what they can to drive this forward. Being able to imagine this drive and purpose of everyone you work with is one of the best things that you can achieve, and we are delighted to have him on our team. What is it like working with close friends? The dream is to surround yourself with great people. Some workers become incredibly close friends, and some incredibly close friends become business partners. But if you build a group that blurs the lines of friends, family, and business in the right way, all of a sudden work doesn’t feel as much like work but fun—which can be productive, as you’re randomly brainstorming over drinks. The atmosphere we’ve managed to create is honestly happy. Friends, part-time workers, people running their own businesses are constantly hopping in and out of our lives, and it’s a never-ending cycle of fun, work, new ideas, and just great feelings with people we’re close to. We’ve been very fortunate in this regard, but we’ve also built this intentionally. What are you most excited about now that you live in New York City? Leif: New York is such a lively energetic place. Many people have inspired work ethics as well as inspired ideas and passions that they pursue in a way that creates a refreshing atmosphere that permeates everywhere. We are constantly exposed to new ideas. What’s next for FREY? Erin: We will, of course, focus on continuing our growth, but we also want to start launching products with other scents, which will hopefully give people more options for them to select something that appeals to them. ore than any other city in America, New York City is like a country song. Country songs tell stories, and NYC has more stories than you would believe; it’s the biggest small town in the U.S. Not only is it made of up millions of diverse individual stories but collectively, the city tells a new story every day. And that’s part of why I love it so much and am glad to be back home.

My story started in 2013 when I came here to help launch the first country station in Manhattan in over 17 years. I remember telling my daughter that we weren’t going to spend our time in the greatest city in America, wishing we were someplace else. You see, this 8th grader’s story was that she wasn’t too happy to be leaving Denver and moving to a new place. I reassured her our story was about creating a new life, growing where you’re planted, working hard, building relationships and finding the good in any situation. You could say it’s the making of a good country song. Like New York City, country music expresses stories with the universal theme of people trying to find their place in the world, working hard, fighting the good fight, praying for a miracle—and raising a little hell. Back then one of my favorite anthems was a song called “Riser” by Dierks Bentley: I’m a riser I’m a get up off the ground, don’t run and hider Pushing comes a-shovin’ Hey I’m a fighter When darkness comes to town, I’m a lighter A get out aliver, out of the fire Survivor
THE RISE OF COUNTRY MUSIC
When NASH FM 94.7 started in 2013, there were country music concerts in the New York area, but they were mostly featuring the superstars. That was then. Today the current scene for emerging country artists is growing every day at such venues like Terminal 5, Irving Plaza and Hammerstein Ballroom. In fact, this summer’s lineup at Jones Beach is 30 percent country music. What a difference a few years makes.

Three years after launching NASH, I was transferred to be on our network morning show based out of Nashville to be broadcast in New York. However, being on the radio in NYC, but not living here wasn’t the best fit for me—or our listeners. Thankfully, NASH decided to launch a local morning show that spoke to the uniquely New York country experience. So, here I am back in the Big Apple. Reflecting on my time in Nashville, it was a fantastic experience to live and work in Music City. It is, after all, the home of country music, but New York City is its biggest stage.

When I emceed shows in Nashville, I was always shocked at the lack of enthusiasm from country fans. You see, I got spoiled by the New York country music fans. They love their country music with the passion only a New Yorker can evoke. Maybe that’s why I relate to them because as a kid growing up in Kentucky, I wanted to choose my music and it wasn’t country. At that time, I was all about 80s rock, and country was for my parents. So for the New York country music fan, I’ll refer to Ole Blue Eyes, himself: They’re doing it their way.

Naturally, my Nashville story is an integral part of my New York story. As host of the only country morning show in New York City, it gives me an insider perspective you can only get from having lived and worked in Music City. I’d run into artists at the grocery store, charity events, and backyard barbecues. I loved my neighborhood and house which sat on three acres and had a chicken coup. Now I eat the delicious chickens from Chirping Chicken which is across from my one-bedroom apartment.

My New York story continues, and I’m not going take a minute of it for granted. I’m reacquainting myself to this fantastic city: going to the flea market in my neighborhood on Sundays, taking an improv class, writing in my journal at a funky little coffee shop, and this summer taking the train to the beach or perhaps enjoying a cocktail on a rooftop at sunset. Without a doubt, though, I’ll be appreciating the delicious cuisines and great food! And like an old country song goes:

A LETTER TO MY YOUNGER SELF By Camille Zamora
once had the surreal pleasure of attending a women’s conference hosted by Arianna Huffington and Mika Brzezinski at Arianna’s divine home. Guests included Katie Couric, Ali Wentworth, Valerie Jarrett, George Stephanopoulos, Dean Ornish, and Joe Scarborough (a few good men punctuating the girl power), and conversation centered on the theme of Thrive: Redefining Success Beyond Money and Power. The heady discussion centered on how we, as women, define “success.” This felt like a particularly poignant thing to consider during this moment of immense (and long-overdue) upheaval in the power corridors of our various creative industries. Much of our conversation centered on the idea of authenticity, and on what advice we would share with other women, and/or with our own younger selves. I was living in NYC in a two-bedroom apartment with five opera singers, working as a nanny and wondering when the bucking bronco of my young soprano voice would start to behave and allow me to sing Mozart the way I heard it in my head. I spent a fair amount of time worrying that the last thing the world needed was another entry-level soprano, and that maybe I hadn’t done the right thing in selling all of my earthly belongings and moving from Texas to NYC in pursuit of an opera career. And I wondered if I would ever find a way to reconcile my passion for this beautiful, ancient art form of opera with my passion for social justice work.
How did that experience influence who you are today? In the simplest of terms, that time in my life toughened me. It taught me to concentrate, via the exercise of memorizing an aria while my roommate was practicing a different aria with ear-shattering brilliance in the same room. It taught me to enjoy simple pleasures. And it taught me to generate my own light in the darkest of spaces. Literally. The apartment we shared was one of those desperately depressing, low-floor apartments with only a few small windows, all of which opened onto airshafts, making it impossible to tell whether it was noon or midnight. One of my roommates, a headstrong German soprano, countered the gloom via her tradition of candlelit breakfasts: dark German bread and strong coffee accompanied by flickering tea-lights and laughter and conversation. It was a tradition that we all soon adopted—some of the brightest breakfasts ever, and in the dimmest possible space.

If you could write a letter to your younger self, what advice might you share with her? Dearest (younger) Camille, Hello from the future! I write to you—my smaller, more nervous younger self—to remind you that in life, as in opera, the key thing is to pause for a moment to take a good, deep breath. You may feel right now that “success” is defined by how many accolades you receive. But I’m going to tell you that it’s not about the accolades at all, but about authenticity. And a direct line to your most authentic self comes, as parents tell their toddlers mid-tantrum, when you just stop and take a deep breath. Simple as that. Just breathe. A deep breath will connect you to your core, to who you really are, and to what you really want to do, share and communicate. With your lungs re-filled and your blood re-oxygenated, you’ll be able to project your voice with firm understanding and clarity of intent. You’ll find that your respiration (from Latin “spiritus,” meaning both breath and soul) allows for inspiration. You will be freed up to take risks, to try various tunes until you find the one that you really love. And if your singing brings occasional tears—of joy or sorrow or both—then you’ll know you’ve chosen the right song. So please, girl, just breathe. Gently, with joy and compassion and the sheer sensual pleasure of feeling your body alive, vibrant and centered. Deep breath in, deep breath out. Yes. Just like that. P.S. You don’t know it yet, but your TX-to-NYC transplant will indeed work out, and you’ll go on to sing great music with great colleagues in great spots from Italy to England to Africa, and together with your beloved pal Monica Yunus, you’ll found Sing for Hope, which will go on to become the country’s largest “arts peace corps.” Oh, and incidentally, when you graduate from Juilliard, there will be a little baby in your belly graduating with you, and that will definitely require some deep breaths. TIME OUT WITH… SARAH STANNARD, INFLUENCER By Bailey Beckett
he age of the Influencer continues to upend social media, and one of its most promising stars is Sarah Stannard, known to thousands at @stylesarah. Her Instagram following continues to grow by leaps and bounds, cultivating an audience of fashion-conscious women. A Brooklyn resident for the last three years, Stannard started her Insta-denity innocently enough: taking photos of herself in front of New York landmarks and hotspots. The images are flawless, with just enough tease and style to attract an audience. Though it’s only a part-time hobby (her real job is with a beauty-focused App in New York where she does social media), Stannard not only caught the attention of style-conscious women, but restaurant and hotel owners eager for a mention, but also soccer fans. That’s right, @stylesarah might as well be @soccersarah given her alliance to the UK team the Tottenham Hotspurs and its midfielder Harry Winks. “I played soccer my entire life and never had a team to identify with,” Sarah says. “My friends were trying to convince me to follow such teams as Lien Arsenal and Chelsea, but I decided on Tottenham.” New York Lifestyles caught up with the savvy, sultry and stylish influencer over lunch in the buzzy lounge in the Baccarat Hotel. Describe @stylesarah and your personal style? Well, if @stylesarah were a verb, I think it would be equivalent to a youthful, infectious enthusiasm. I rely heavily on a neutral color palette. I used to wear bright colors all the time and found that the lifespan of every item in my wardrobe was too short to keep up with. I was giving in to short-lived trends and I didn’t like that. My entire wardrobe is all black, white, grey, tan and denim. A pop of color is a rare moment and is usually some sort of statement piece. I’m really into animal prints like leopard and snakeskin this season. Since there’s a lack of color in my wardrobe, I play it up with varying textures and layers. I love a contradicting mix of a super formal look and sneakers. And of course, I really like to add my personal touch in there - with the logo of the soccer team I support or lapel pins I’ve collected from around the world. Lastly, I’m definitely a hat girl. Fedoras, berets, beanies... I want them all! How do you decide where to photograph? I think my backdrops are really similar to my style—neutral and heavy on texture. It’s more the time of day that’s essential—early mornings during the weekends in the city are nice and quiet, it’s easier to get a good shot then. How have you built such a big audience? Experience and consistency! I don’t think my audience is very big compared to other fashion influencers, but I have an audience that I’m very intimately connected with. Whether they’re fellow soccer supporters or people that have been following my blog since 2009 in Ohio, we’ve all gone on this journey together. 104 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | APRIL 2019
How do you engage with your followers? By being my most authentic self! I think when I stopped posing and smiling and started creating the content that made me happy is when I really started connecting with others. The soccer community has been essential to this - and people outside of the soccer community get a kick out of my fandom (see what I did there?). Not only do I engage on my own posts, but I answer every message and interact on their pages as well. How are influencers changing media? The way I see it, influencers and social media are just another form of marketing—and it’s here for a reason. People want a more authentic voice—whether they’re still authentic or not—to tell them where to go and what to do. Aspirational marketing can get you so far, but realistic marketing—where the consumer really feels like they can achieve that life—is what’s working for the current market. Who do you follow? My favorite people to follow typically create content that’s far different from mine, but they make me really feel something, and that’s why I like them. An influencer I love to follow is @jacimariesmith—she’s youthful and aspirational—but not in an intimidating way. Her photos are amazing. Another is @dorytrendy and is very much my vibe. I draw a lot of inspiration from her looks. As far as brands, @ theloversanddriftersclub is my favorite. It’s everything I want to be, but I’m too much of a good girl. Also, my friend @streetstyleteller has a great vibe and I’m always excited to see what she’s posting. And of course, @spursofficial because I can’t live without my soccer team! •
