Theater Actress To Present Shakespeare’s Women At Local Library

L

By Stefanie Sears ibrary patrons at West Caldwell Public Library can expect a lesson on female characters of Shakespeare this month during a unique lecture. Award-winning actress Ellen Barry plans to present her free lecture “The Infinite Variety of Shakespeare’s Women” in the West Caldwell Public Library Community Meeting Room on Thursday, May 24, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Barry’s late husband Paul Barry, a wellknown name in New Jersey’s theater world, founded the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival in 1963. Ellen Barry joined the company in 1965; they brought it to Drew University in 1972 and were involved with it until 1990. It is now known as the present-day Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. Now, spectators can witness the theater actress veteran perform at the library. Barry had approached Senior Reference Librarian Ethan Galvin about presenting at the library. “I have presented other Shakespeare-related programs in the past, which have always drawn good crowds,” he ex-

plains. “So, I thought this would be an appealing program to our audience. It also has a unique twist, because it focuses on female characters in Shakespeare. We’ve never had an award-winning Broadway actress perform at the library before, which I feel is a major attraction and will hopefully draw a diverse crowd of students, adults, and senior citizens.” Galvin also formed an essay contest for the James Caldwell High School and West Essex Regional High School AP English and AP Shakespeare students in conjunction with the event. The assignment is to write a 1,000-word essay on their favorite Shakespeare lady and enter it for an opportunity to win a monetary prize. The Women’s Club of Caldwell, who is sponsoring the event, will also be providing the prize money. “One of my goals is to bridge the gap between young people (students) and adults or seniors by presenting cultural and educational programs that will appeal to both audience segments,” explains Galvin, “I feel that students can learn from the vast experience of adults and adults can rejuvenate themselves by working with
