The Newtown Bee - April 9, 2021

A favorite single Atlas nitrile glove has served garden expert Sydney Eddison well. It rests with a pair of leather palmed gloves sporting Velcro wrist bands. —Bee Photo, Crevier

Whether digging in the dirt, trimming thorny shrubs, or grappling with piles of brush, choosing the right garden gloves can make those chores easier and decidedly less painful.

Give A Hand To The Good Glove By Nancy K. Crevier You have heard the adage, “If the shoe fits…” but how about the glove? If the glove fits, you certainly want to wear it, and this time of year, where better than the garden? There is nothing like the feel of moist, soft soil sifting between the fingers. Most hands, however, need a little more protection than what nature has provided for weeding, pruning, shaping, seeding, and planting. And the right garden glove can add to the pleasure of digging into the season. Garden gloves come in all styles, colors, sizes, and prices, meaning you should be able to find a pair that suits your gardening needs — or maybe even more than one style. A nylon or cotton cloth glove is an inexpensive option perfect for jobs when getting soaking wet is not an issue, and when basic protection is all that is needed. Some cloth gloves even have UV protection as a plus. Bamboo gardening gloves are ideal for those with sensitive skin. This breathable,

flexible style is intended for gentler gardening chores but is not as durable as gloves made from other materials. For those tough jobs, choose a glove that has palms and fingers reinforced with spandex, leather, or a nitrile coating. These styles generally offer a tighter fit and good grip — great when raking or using hand tools. Nitrile gloves — made from a manmade rubber — latex, plastic, or a combination are also water resistant or waterproof. When hands may otherwise be taking a soaking from damp soil, mulching, or moving hoses, this style of glove comes to the rescue. “I have a lot of one-of-a-kind gloves — all for the left hand,” confessed garden expert and author Sydney Eddison. “As I am right handed, the missing gloves are obviously the ones I used on that fateful day. “I do actually have a preference for Atlas nitrile gloves. They are thin, flexible, and water resistant but can be machine washed. Just don’t put them in the dryer,” she

advises. “They are available from the A. M. Leonard Horticultural Tool & Supply Co. Their catalog describes the Atlas nitrile gloves as tough and durable and boasts that ‘they fit like a second skin.’ I really don’t think they exaggerate.” Another water-resistant option is a glove made of cowhide or suede leather. The natural leather is long-lasting and, over time, softens into a luxurious favorite. When stinging insects or plants are part of the day’s work, or prickly bushes require care, the leather glove is a good choice. Less familiar are some of the specialty gardening gloves, including ones with plastic claws on the fingertips. What gardener has not needed to scratch just a little hole or get a good grip on some pesky little weed? The claw-tip glove is a fierce looking and interesting choice for this chore (and may be just the thing to have on hand for next year’s Halloween costume). Pruning shrubs, prickly plants, and berry bushes that demand a long reach call for gloves that protect the forearm. Most of these gloves have a flexible material for the hand and finger portion, with the forearm protected by a thicker, tougher material to ease any thorny situation. As the gardener ages, so might the joints in the wrists and fingers. But there is no need to forego the hobby of gardening because of arthritis, as gloves offering extra support and/or compression return the ease of gardening to aching hands and fingers. These soft gloves are meant to have a firm fit and are usually padded and in some cases, heated. Look for gloves with Velcro wrist straps for an adjustable fit. This option also prevents loose dirt from sneaking in at the cuff. Elastic cuffs will also aid in keeping dirt and debris out of the glove, while a simple cuff is easy-on, easy-off. The right size glove will fit snugly without squeezing fingers, with only a bit of wiggle room at the tip. Too large a glove leads to chafing, a poor grip, and an unhappy gardener. Color? It is everywhere for a bright look, and patterns add fun to pulling a glove onto the hand.

What gardener has not needed to scratch just a little hole or get a good grip on some pesky little weed? The claw-tip glove is a fierce looking but effective choice for this chore, and is available from many online sites and garden retailers. A pair from NNBB is pictured.

The natural look of leather gloves becomes even more subtle as time goes by, for those less inclined to stand out in the field. Holly Kocet, a founding member of Protect Our Pollinators (POP) and an avid gardener, said that she likes “a glove that fits snugly. Loose glove are useless, especially for weeding. And gloves need to be mostly fabric with rubber for grips on the palm side. All-rubber gloves are hot in the summer. Of course when it comes to pruning pines with sticky sap or clearing invasives with prickly stems, I’ll grab almost anything, and a heavier rubber glove makes sense. “Pretty designs and colors are nice,” she continued, “but I’m hard on garden gloves; they get dirty and worn pretty quickly. I’m not a dainty gardener. I get down in the dirt when planting, even in light rain, so I’m lucky to get a full season out of a pair of gloves.” There is profound joy to be found outdoors in the garden, and a good glove with a good fit will only make it better. So find one that suits you best, and if the glove fits — wear it!

Local Experts Say: It’s Time To Start Sowing The Seeds Of Summer By Eliza Hallabeck Planting seeds can be a “great opportunity to have some fun, save some money, and recycle plastic containers” according to Peggy Townsend, who represents the Garden Club of Newtown. With summer’s blooms and vegetables on the horizon, now is the time to start sowing the seeds of the season. Townsend and Eugene Reelick, who owns Hollandia Nurseries of Bethel, both offered advice for those thinking about planting from seed. Townsend opts to start her seeds indoors. She said people can reuse any container that is an inch-and-a-half to three inches deep, as long as it has drainage holes. If a plastic container does not have drainage holes, Townsend has a hot tip: heat the end of a barbecue skewer over the stove and carefully use the tip to create holes. Townsend shared a presentation on the subject of growing from seed for the Garden Club of Newtown’s virtual February meeting. Usually a seed package will tell the gardener to start planting seeds indoors six to eight weeks before planting the plants outside, Townsend said. The length of time depends on the type of seed. She also said gardeners should know their last frost date, which in Connecticut tends to be around April 30 to May 4. Townsend uses a seed starting soil mix for her seeds, as garden dirt can be too heavy. All-purpose potting soil will work too, she said, and either can be purchased at local nurseries. Reelick recommended gardeners use seed germination soil or a seed starter mix. “The soil is the foundation, so if you start with a good foundation, you can build a beautiful garden,” said Reelick. Some seeds, Reelick shared, benefit from being soaked in water before they are sowed. Different types of seeds have a very hard outer shell, he offered, and soaking them in a glass overnight or in a moist

Peggy Townsend’s recent seedlings sprout from containers.

paper towel softens that shell and helps the seed germinate quicker. Some seeds can also be started outdoors, Reelick said. For seeds that are started indoors, he recommended keeping them by a bright, sunny window with some plastic loosely over the top, to let air in while also returning moisture to the seeds. Reelick said he also likes to use a seed starter with mycorrhizae, which he described as a beneficial, symbiotic root fungus that protects plants from other types of damaging fungus. “You’re going to have a much stronger plant in the long run,” Reelick said regarding using mycorrhizae. Once seeds are planted, Townsend said to keep them watered. At the first sight of sprouts, Townsend takes the plastic cover off her seedlings. Then, when she sees two sets of leaves, she transplants them into little pots or a bigger container with good drainage. She keeps her indoor plants either on a south-facing win-

dowsill or under lights. She said fluorescent lights “will do the trick” in an “inexpensive way,” or nurseries and other shops carry grow lights. The lights should stay three to five inches above the plants as they grow. She keeps her lights on S-hooks using chains so she can control the height. “You must have light. You must have some form of grow light,” Reelick said, adding that most people do not have enough light in their homes, so simulated light is the best option. Reelick also noted that heat matters. Plants grown at Hollandia Nurseries, he shared, are kept on heat trays that maintain a temperature of about 70 degrees, so if the greenhouse gets chilly, the roots of the plants stay warm. Before moving plants outside, Townsend said, they need to be “hardened off.” That means plants need to be acclimated to the outdoors after being raised inside. Townsend recommended hardening them

off about a week before planting them, first by moving them outdoors into the shade when temperatures reach 40 degrees or above. They can be kept in the shade for about two days, then moved to dappled shade, then finally moved to full sun. Townsend warned to bring them back inside overnight if the temperatures drop or if there is harsher weather. “You have to acclimate them to the wind, the rain, and the sun,” said Townsend. “If you don’t do that they will get scorched and not grow.” Planting seeds is much more economical than buying plants, Townsend observed. “I like doing it because you have more choice of the varieties, and I know they don’t have any GMO’s or poisons used,” said Townsend. Easier seeds to plant for beginners include marigolds, zinnias, snapdragons, cucumbers, peppers, and zucchinis, according to Reelick. Of course, for those who prefer less effort or who do not have the space to grow seedlings indoors, nurseries sell plants ready to be set into the ground outside. “We always get the jump on planting things sooner,” Reelick shared. When reached for seeding ideas, Sydney Eddison, a local author who has written seven books about gardening and four books of poetry, offered a “wild” approach. “Why not try “eager self-sowing perennials?” She said plants that like some shade, bloom early in the season, and tolerate morning sun while not liking to “bake” include wood poppy, aka the celandine poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum), brunnera, hellebores, and Corydalis lutea, “a small, pretty plant with delicate foliage and little yellow flowers.” “It will love you and turn up all over the place, but it is so pretty you can’t have too much of it,” Eddison said of the Corydalis lutea.

Local Advocacy Group Publishes ‘Earth-Friendly Garden’ For By Shannon Hicks Homeowners looking for guidance on ecologically sound landscaping practices should consider purchasing a copy of the recently published 40-page Earth-Friendly Gardening: One yard at a time. The informative and readable guide was written by members of Protect Our Pollinators (POP), a Newtown-based group that advocates for sustainable gardening The locally based advocacy group Protect Our Pollinators has published Earth-Friendly Gardening: One yard at a time, a sturdy, handy 40-page guide to ecologically sound landscaping practices. —all photos courtesy Protect Our Pollinators

methods to benefit native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. These insects not only pollinate trees, flowers and vegetable gardens, but their caterpillars can also provide a critical food source for nesting birds and their young, POP members point out. Topics include soil health, caring for fruit trees, conifers, and roses, rethinking lawn care and fall cleanup, organic vegetable gardening, selecting deer-resistant plants, choosing native perennials, and removing invasive species. A closing feature by Dottie Evans, “Hummingbirds in the Garden,” celebrates the annual visits by ruby-throated hummingbirds. Evans includes personal reflections and shares a recipe to create a safe nectar that can entice the territorial birds to return to the same location for as many as 12 years. Full-color photographs with each article help readers identify plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, beneficial insects, and garden pests as they are discussed. POP member Marcia Chaloux did the design work for Earth-Friendly Gardening, creating easyto-follow pages filled with stories, photos, and graphics. CyberChrome in Branford handled the printing. Mary Wilson, a founder of the group, calls pollinators “keystone species that support all kinds of other resources.” A full 75% of all food consumed by humans, she points out, is pollinated by bees, as are most plants

in the ecosystem. “Without them, our whole habitat and our ecosystem would look very different, and would not be very diverse” Wilson said March 18. “We need that diversity, and we need to keep things in balance. If you take something out of a system, then everything else is affected.” Although the group’s focus is pollinators, Wilson said cleaner gardening “really supports everything else in the environment. “It’s conserving what we have in nature, and what we like about living in Newtown,” she added. “If you are creating a habitat, or a space in your yard that is conducive for pollinators, you’re making space for other life. It’s going to be safe for you, your pets, even your well. It’s healthier and cleaner for everybody.” Designed for handy reference, EarthFriendly Gardening follows a yearlong effort by POP members to research envi-

ronmentally safe ways to address the landscaping issues most frequently encountered by Connecticut gardeners. The effort, says Wilson, can start in one’s own yard. “Everybody’s gotta start somewhere,” she said. “The pollinators will find you. “If you plant for them in your yard, they’ll find you, and hopefully a few doors down, they’ll have some too, and then you’re creating a pathway,” she said. “What we do in our yard affects the neighborhood, and the town, and beyond.” Earth-Friendly Gardening is perfect, says Wilson, for gardening clubs and home gardeners. “It’s not a technical book, it’s designed for the person who is beginning, or an intermediate gardener, who wants to learn about some modern ways to think about the garden, and change how they think about the garden, and conservations that

Gardeners And Homeowners can be done in a sustainable way,” she said. One easy step for homeowners is actually a non-step: Let nature take care of itself, says Wilson. “Sometimes it’s OK to just leave things alone. People see plants with little holes in them and there may be enough beneficial insects in a garden that will take care of them. “Sometimes,” she added, “you can just spray something down with water. I’ve done that with little bushes in my yard sometimes. I can spray them down with a hose, and they’re fine. That may not work all the time, but you can try that first.” Pesticides can be expensive, and many are very harmful to pollinators — an entire page in Earth-Friendly Gardening is devoted to those. The spreadsheet offers readers the chemical name, trade name, and what each insect or plant killer or repellent is used for. “Sometimes these pesticides can be pretty pricey,” Wilson pointed out. In an article called “Reasons to Go Pesticide Free” that is also part of Earth-Friendly Gardening, Wilson offers multiple reasons to take that route. Going greener does not need to be expensive, she said. Making earth-friendly choices may require an initial outlay, but it will be worth it, Wilson says. “In the long term it’s going to save you money,” she said. “It’s going to be easier to maintain, you’ll use less water, and you will mow less if you cut down on the size of your lawn. You’ll also use less gas, and pollute less, if you mow less.” Proceeds from the guide will generate income to support POP’s ongoing projects. These efforts include the addition of native plants and signage to existing POP gardens such as Tammy’s Garden at Newtown Municipal Center, the Pollinator Pathway garden at Newtown Fruit Trail at Fairfield Hills, the garden at Newtown

How Do You Hire A Reliable Contractor? The Secrets Are Right Here

CROMWELL — If you completed a home improvement project recently, you probably remember how difficult it was. Whether you’re remodeling your kitchen, building a home office, or creating the perfect entertainment space – you may decide you need the help of a general contractor. That’s where a trusted and vetted contractor comes in. Some contractors focus on a specific type of project, like plumbing or tiling or painting, while others will work on any type of project. For larger projects, a general contractor may also serve as a project manager working with other vendors to get all the work done. Hiring a reliable and trustworthy contractor

is one of the most important steps for your project. Hire the right one and you can relax knowing that your project is in good hands. Hire the wrong one, and you could be facing a wide range of problems from unfinished work to being sued if workers aren’t paid. In 2020, Better Business Bureau Serving Connecticut received over 228,000 inquiries on BBB.org for home improvement contractors. Consumers turn to BBB to help them find a trustworthy contractor by checking ratings, history of complaints, and reading customer reviews. Consider these tips when hiring anybody to work in your home: Research. Search for a contractor’s Busi-

ness Profile on BBB.org for free information on their history of complaints, read verified Customer Reviews, and see if they are an Accredited Business. Ask for references. Ask the contractor for a list of recent local references you may contact. Ask the references about the services performed, quality of the work, and their overall experience with the contractor. Ask if the contractor stuck to the estimated budget and completion date for the project. Obtain multiple quotes. You should always shop around and get at least three quotes from different businesses. Make sure all bids consider the same set of criteria. Remember that the lowest bid may not necessarily be the best bid; if one bid is significantly lower than the others, the contractor may be cutting corners or may not understand your work requirements. Get it in writing. Always get estimates in writing and never let any work begin without a written and signed contract. Don’t be pressured into signing an agreement before you are ready, and make sure you read and

understand everything before signing. Ask questions if you do not understand any part of the contract. Verify license and insurance. Always be sure that the company you decide to work with has the necessary licenses and insurance to work in your region. In Connecticut, you can use elicense.ct.gov. Never pay in full up front. Create a payment schedule so your final payment is not due until the work is complete and you have fully inspected it. Do not pay cash; make sure your check is written to a company, not an individual, or that you use a credit card. Paying with a credit card will provide some recourse should the job not be completed as stated in the contract. Keep all documentation. Hold on to your receipt and contract for future reference or if any questions arise after the work is complete. Make sure you are aware of your warranty coverage and how to deal with service issues. Need help with your project? Find trusted, vetted contracting pros near you and get a quote at bbb.org/near-me/general-contractor.

Aquarion Offering Rain Barrels Made Of Recycled Materials BRIDGEPORT — Aquarion Water Company is again offering, for a discounted rate, 60-gallon rain barrels for its Connecticut customers. The rain barrel initiative not only supports Aquarion’s water conservation efforts, but it also provides numerous benefits for users. Rain barrels are an efficient and effective way to store rain water for later use by collecting rain and runoff from a roof or downspout. They provide a free, ready source of water for filling watering cans, connecting a garden hose, feeding a drip irrigation system, and other outdoor chores. For example, one 60-gallon recycled food-grade barrel can consistently provide water for a 100-square-foot garden. “Rain barrels are a great resource for homeowners, especially during dry summer months when water use may be

Is Pre-Built A Better Alternative? Home Construction Is Making More Room For Modulars By Bill Gassett Are you considering building a modular home or buying one that’s already constructed? You are not alone. Many folks are turning to modular homes as another housing choice. Cost-efficient and headache-free, a modular home can be a great option for homeowners who dream of owning their very own custom home but don’t want to go through the pains of managing architects and construction workers. Modular homes are a great alternative for anyone who seeks a more manageable project. Here are some interesting facts about this type of home to help you decide whether a modular home could be your newest real estate purchase: What Is A Modular Home?

A modular home is built in an indoor factory setting and then transported to its new, permanent location, where a builder will fully assemble the home. Modular homes are not mobile homes; they are just homes that have been built offsite. They are also known as factory-built or prefab homes. How Do Modular Homes Differ From Homes Built On Site?

As prefabs are built indoors, they can be put together in a matter of weeks instead of months. The length of time required for a stick-built home usually depends on the weather. For prefabs, it is not an issue. Modular homes must follow specific rules, guidelines, and building codes that typically do not apply to traditional on-site homes. Things Worth Knowing

Modular homes are moved once complete. They are typically built in a factory and will remain there until they have been fully built. They are then moved to the plot of land they’ll most likely spend the rest of their days on. They are moved in parts and will need to be fully assembled before they can be inhabited. This is also when the home will be connected to its services and have its finishes completed. The most grueling part of the new construction process will already be have been completed, though — a big plus! Financing for modular homes is the same as for traditional homes. Many people think that loans on this building type are different, perhaps even more expensive than traditional housing, but this is not the case. It may be possible to arrange traditional mortgage financing if you’re buying from a modular home builder, or you can seek out your own construction loan if you plan to custom build your property. Many folks will get a land loan if they don’t plan to start their construction project right away. As with any other housing project, you will be expected to have a down payment and an excellent credit score. Lenders will want proof that you are a good credit risk.

This infographic from the Modular Home Builders Association illustrates the process involved in completing a home construction process using this pre-built system versus more conventional methods. No Longer Stigmatized

Years ago, modular homes were not looked upon favorably. They were considered to be of inferior construction by many in the building community and also by real estate agents. And back then, that may have held a grain of truth: It was not uncommon to see construction materials that were inferior to their stick-built counterparts. There was minimal variety in construction, and it was often easy to identify a modular home. Many of them had shallowpitched roofs, and there was very little creativity involved. This is certainly no longer the case. In fact, some modular homes are built better and with better materials than traditional new construction. Modular homes are like any real estate you can purchase on the market, meaning that they do not depreciate in value just because they are modular homes. Of course, their value fluctuates depending on the state of the market just as a traditional property would. They are seen as a permanent struc-

ture and viewed as a normal manufactured home. Modular homes can be customized to your liking — everything from the number of bedrooms and bathrooms to your aesthetic choices. Just about anything can be changed to how you like it — at a price of course. Because of this, no two homes are the same. Many modular homes are now unique by design, having been put together from their owner’s imagination. With more people taking advantage of modular homes on today’s market, owners are bound to have a one-of-a-kind look and not the cookie-cutter designs of years past. Taxes Are Similar

One of the main misconceptions of prefab housing is that they are taxed differently; as discussed previously, they are considered to be like any other personal real estate and they are taxed the same. Do not expect to see any discounts on the taxes you pay.

Ideally, if you are looking for your own modular home, shop around. It may take you some time to find a modular home that suits you and your family, and there can be wide disparities in quality and price. Just as when you purchasing anything else — especially when you’re spending a big chunk of money — you should always do your research. One modular home company can be better than the next, just like one custom home builder might be better than the competition. Look into the company as well as its methods. Buying a modular home today is a viable option that’s worth considering. When doing your research, remember that today’s modular homes are much different from those built in previous decades. Like any other house, plan on doing a home inspection with a qualified professional to ensure there are no significant issues. This feature has appeared in RISMedia. com’s Housecall. It was submitted by Bill Gassett, who works for RE/MAX Executive Realty in Hopkinton, Massachusetts.

Considering A New Coat Of Paint? Try One Or Both ‘Color Of The Year’ Choices CARLSTADT, N.J. — Sprucing up a room, some accent pieces, or the entire house can be an illuminating experience by tapping into the latest ‘Color of the Year’ selections. Pantone, the global color authority and provider of professional color language standards and digital solutions for the design community, announced in January that 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and 13-0647 Illuminating are the 2021 Pantone Color of the Year selections. To arrive at the selection each year, color experts at the Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking for new color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles, and socioeconomic conditions. Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures, and effects that impact color, relevant social media platforms, and even up-coming sporting events that capture worldwide attention. The 2021 selections represent two independent colors that come together to create an aspirational color pairing, joining deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the optimistic promise of a sunshine-filled day, according to the organization. As people look for ways to fortify themselves with energy, clarity, and hope to overcome the continuing uncertainty, spirited and emboldening shades satisfy our quest for vitality. Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity — a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power. Ultimate Gray is emblematic of solid, dependable elements that are everlasting and provide a firm foundation — the colors of pebbles on the beach and natural elements whose weathered appearance highlights an

Usage

ability to stand the test of time, Ultimate Gray quietly assures, encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience. “The selection of two independent colors highlights how different elements come together to express a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting, conveying the idea that it’s not about one color or one person, it’s about more than one. The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted, this is essential to the human spirit.” “The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer.” added Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication and a way to symbol-

ize thoughts and ideas, many designers and brands are embracing the language of color to engage and connect.”

Ultimate Gray and Illuminating do not have to be used in equal proportions; either color can take precedence. They are a great combination in any room in the home. Juxtaposing Illuminating with Ultimate Gray in table linens, sheeting, and home accessories including tabletop infuses vitality and liveliness. Painting a front door in Illuminating conveys a warm and welcoming message when supported by solid, dependable Ultimate Gray in the exterior finishes. They are also an ideal combination for any office, in-home or commercial, with Ultimate Gray providing the firm foundation for Illuminating’s vibrant yellow, heightening awareness and enhancing intuition, lighting the way to the intellectual curiosity, originality, and resourcefulness of an open mind.
