7 Things Doctors Wish Families Knew This Back-to-School Season

(StatePoint) As you prepare children to return to the classroom this fall, American Medical Association (AMA) has seven tips to help your family have a healthy school year.

AMA President Bobby Mukkamala, MD said as parents and caretakers purchase school supplies and prepare their children for academic success, they can also take concrete steps to prioritize their physical and mental health.

“A healthy start can set the tone for a strong, successful year ahead,” Mukkamala said.

1. Ultra-processed foods are associated with health risks. Many busy families rely on ultra-processed foods due to their convenience. However, consuming these foods regularly increases the risk of health complications, including cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Read nutrition labels carefully with attention to sodium, saturated fat and added sugar, shop the perimeter of the grocery store where fresh, whole foods tend to be located, and prepare meals that prioritize whole foods, including fruits and vegetables, for growing children and adults.

2. Eating disorders are misunderstood. This silent epidemic affects people of all ages and backgrounds, striking at the core of their physical and mental wellbeing. Despite its widespread impact, the gravity of eating disorders often remains private, leaving many to battle the condition silently.

If you believe your child or teenager has an eating disorder, their physician can direct you to helpful resources.

room may be the only plan for the next day or two.

The most likely culprit is norovirus, and it can happen to anyone. When buying school supplies, stock up on cleaning supplies as well so you can keep frequently touched surfaces sanitized. Model good hand-washing habits for your children. Keep children with norovirus symptoms home from school for at least 2 days (48 hours) after symptoms stop to help prevent the spread of the virus.

5. Too much screen time is bad for health. People are on their devices more than ever before. But too much screen time can have negative mental and physical health effects and increase feelings of loneliness. The start of a new school year is a good time to replace screen time with other activities, such as after school clubs and sports, playdates, quality family time and sleep.

6. Eye health is essential. Do not take eye health for granted. Fall is a good time for an ophthalmologist checkup.

If your tween or teen wears contacts, be sure that they wash their lenses and lens case and take their lenses off at night. Frequent computer breaks, wearing sunglasses, and a healthy diet can also promote good eye health.

Check with your physician during the back-to-school season to ensure everyone in the family is up to date on vaccinations. When respiratory virus season starts later in the fall, get up to date on

3. Ensure your vaccinations are up to date. Vaccinations help protect you and your family against severe disease and disability, and save millions of lives each year.

the influenza vaccine to help reduce time away from school or work.

4. Norovirus is very contagious, but preventable. It seems everyone has experienced the sudden turn of the stomach, causing a mad rush to the bathroom due to vomiting, diarrhea or both. And, unfortunately, remaining near the bath-

7. Sleep is important for overall health. From school stress to illnesses, many factors can interfere with a good night’s sleep. Instituting a consistent sleep routine for the entire family is a good start.

For teens, 8-10 hours of sleep is recommended, and children aged 6-12 should be getting 9-12 hours of sleep. Consider consulting a physician for persistent sleep issues to determine whether they’re caused by a sleep disorder and to get help.

Protecting Kids’ Mental Health This School Year

From classes and homework to potentially dealing with difficult situations like bullying, there is a lot for kids to navigate during the school year.

A 2024 report from the World Health Organization states that adolescence is a crucial period for developing social and emotional habits important for mental well-being.

These include adopting healthy sleep patterns, exercising regularly, and developing coping, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

However, the report notes it is globally estimated that one in seven 10-19-year-olds experience mental health conditions.

It also states that adolescents with mental health conditions are particularly vulnerable to social exclusion, discrimination, stigma (affecting readiness to seek help), educational difficulties, risk-taking behaviors, physical ill-health, and human rights violations.

Fortunately, efforts are being made to provide tools that help protect kids’ mental health — and parents and teachers can be proactive about getting involved.

Preventing Bullying

Bullying is a direct cause of mental health issues and can be one of the major stressors kids face at school, and even after hours due to the rise in cyberbullying. It is important that children treat each other with compassion, as unkind words and actions can have devastating effects on the long-term wellbeing of classmates.

Celebrating ten years, Pilot Pen’s “Erase Bullying for Good” initiative

It can be easy for children to get overwhelmed, from homework and extracurriculars to friendships and bullying. However, there are many different things children, as well as their parents and caretakers, can do to protect their mental health.

helps students, parents and teachers understand and stop bullying. Sales from Pilot’s FriXion Clicker erasable gel pens support STOMP Out Bullying, the nation’s leading nonprofit dedicated to this issue.

In fact, Pilot’s contributions to antibullying organizations between 20152025 equal over $650,000, helping fund a variety of initiatives that are making communities a safer place for students. The campaign recommends many different tips to help erase bullying before

it starts at your child’s school.

Parents and caretakers can advocate for the adoption of bullying prevention programs. This might include special teacher and faculty training, peer mentoring and “Bullying Boxes,” where students can file anonymous reports of bullying.

School districts can institute wellness rooms, which are safe spaces where students experiencing distress can retreat and relax.

People can also ensure their school actively celebrates both diversity and differences, and that all students are respected and valued. Establish programs that teach empathy, tolerance, kindness, acceptance and conflict resolution.

Caretakers can ask local school board representatives to establish internet use guidelines to educate students and help stop after-hours cyberbullying.

Teachers can teach students about the difference between being a bystander, someone who watches bullying happen, and being an upstander, someone who intervenes when bullying is taking place. Encouraging people to report bullying when they witness it and to be an upstander when it feels safe to do so can spread kindness and create a safer community.

If you are experiencing bullying, or if you have a friend, child, or student who is, lean on resources designed to help.

Pilot’s “Erase Bullying for Good” campaign and STOMP Out Bullying provide tools to help you react effectively to bullying when it happens and learn what to do next. To access these resources, visit powertothepen.com/ erase-bullying.

Navigating Emotions

It is easy for students to get overwhelmed by the demands of their classes. Parents and caretakers should make sure their child has the time and space outside of schoolwork to have fun, cultivate friendships and practice self-care.

They can encourage hobbies like exercise, meditation, team sports, and outlets for their child’s creative expression like journaling, drawing, and music. These activities can help kids build self-confidence and manage relationships; skills they need to be resilient in the face of stressful situations.

Parents can help by establishing open lines of communication and equipping kids with tools that can encourage them to express themselves more freely and help eliminate some homeworkrelated frustration.

FriXion erasable pens made with thermo-sensitive ink technology write smoothly and erase cleanly, giving students the power to write, erase and rewrite anything from term papers to poetry, without tedious rewrites and with less stress.

A 2023 article from American Psychiatric Association stated that recent research finds performing acts of kindness may help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

It specifically notes a 2022 study conducted by researchers at University of Ohio, where people with elevated symptoms of depression or anxiety were randomly assigned to engage in acts of kindness, join in social activities, or participate in a brief intervention based on cognitive behavioral therapy.

The study found that all three interventions reduced symptoms, lessened distress, and improved life satisfaction. However, the article states that the acts of kindness showed greater benefits for social connection compared to the other two interventions.

Cultivating kindness and compassion in communities and giving kids the tools they need to build their self-confidence helps protect students’ mental health and helps ensure everyone has a safe, healthy and successful school year.

AGORA Leadership Development Program

Offering Scholarships To High School Students

NEW MILFORD — AGORA, a Newtown resident-founded nonprofit, has successfully completed its inaugural pilot program — a dynamic, in-person leadership development experience for teens across Fairfield and Litchfield County — and is now seeking to grow its impact.

Created and run by Newtown residents, AGORA offers a free 70 plus hour leadership training program that equips high school students with the tools, confidence, and ethical grounding to lead with purpose.

The July 2025 pilot cohort included students from across Fairfield and Litchfield County, who came together for immersive workshops, public speaking training, service learning, and values-based leadership development.

AGORA founder Robert Payne said their goal is to equip young minds with big ideas, a deep sense of responsibility, and understanding of why servant leadership is the most impactful form of

leadership.

Payne said the success of AGORA’s pilot would not have been possible without the support of dedicated community partners, including Faith Church for generously hosting the program and providing a welcoming space for students to learn, grow, and connect.

AGORA also extends heartfelt thanks to The New American Dream Foundation, Housatonic Habitat for Humanity, and The Silo.

With growing interest and demand from students and families, AGORA is now expanding to be an academic yearlong after-school program offered Fridays from 6:30-8:30pm.

As AGORA looks to the future, the organization welcomes the support of community members, local businesses, and philanthropic partners eager to invest in shaping the next generation of leaders.

Are Your College Savings On Track?

(StatePoint) If you are like many Americans, college savings may be taking a back seat to other financial priorities right now. Financial advisors want you to know that there are options to maximize education savings that you may not be taking advantage of.

New research from Edward Jones, a leading North American financial services firm, and Morning Consult found that 52 percent of Americans do not know what 529 plans are, and only 14 percent note they have or intend to use one as part of their education savings strategy.

A 529 plan is an education savings investment account that offers federal and state tax benefits. Earnings grow tax free and distributions are tax free, when used for qualified education expenses, and many states’ plans offer state income tax deductions for contributions.

Andy Esser, a financial advisor at Edward Jones, said that he has seen the impact that 529 plans have had on his family’s and his clients’ education savings both as a parent and in his line of work.

“With education costs and borrowing costs on the rise, it’s more important than ever for Americans to understand the savings options available to them,” Esser said.

To help you get your education-specific and broader financial goals on track, Edward Jones encourages people to consider 529 plans and see how it can help them and their family.

Not only do 529 plans offer federal and state tax benefits, they also offer flexible distributions, according to Edward Jones. While 529 plans offer a variety of options for how beneficiaries

With the high prices of college education, it can be easy for people to feel intimidated or lost when it comes to affording it. However, financial advisors want people to know about education saving opportunities that can provide relief for those who want a college degree.

use the funds, this fact is widely misunderstood. In fact, the majority of surveyed Americans are not aware that 529 funds can be used for qualified apprenticeships (72 percent), K-12 expenses (65 percent), or possibly even for rollover funds to a Roth IRA (81 percent), among other options.

529 plans also provide different

account management options. If your family has multiple children, you may choose to open just one 529 account, or different accounts for each child. Either way, if a named beneficiary decides not to attend school, the account owner can change the beneficiary to another eligible family member.

Edward Jones also notes that contributions for 529 plans are easy. This is because 529 plans accept contributions from anyone, regardless of whether they are account holders, making it easy for loved ones — from grandparents to family friends — to contribute to tax-advantaged education savings.

529 plans can offer financial relief, which is important because savings nationally are falling short. Only 38 percent of Americans feel like they are saving enough to reach their education savings goals, meaning most families will likely need to lean on student loans to meet costs. A 529 plan can offset what your family might need to borrow, helping position you for a debtfree future.

Financial advisors can also help and support individuals and families alike. The majority of respondents (78 percent) do not typically consult a financial advisor before making decisions related to education savings. However, 21 percent say that working with a financial advisor would help them feel better about covering the costs of future education expenses. Financial advisors can act as impartial thirdparty experts to develop tailored strategies to meet your savings goals within the context of your big-picture financial goals.

“Amid inflation and high interest rates, a growing number of young people are considering skipping higher education altogether,” Esser said. “Understanding the many savings options available can help them make an informed decision about whether college is within reach.”

Preparing Pre-Teens And Teens For The Classroom Includes Immunizations

(StatePoint) Young people ages 7 to 18 are busy checking off their back-to-school or college lists. Visiting their pediatrician or family doctor to get up to date on immunizations should be part of that list. Immunizations will prepare their immune systems to recognize and resist viruses that spread quickly once classes begin. These are viruses that can lead to health issues like infertility, muscle paralysis, brain damage, blindness, deafness and cancer.

The recommended immunization schedule approved by American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is based on ongoing review of the most recent scientific data and relies on two main factors: when the vaccine works best with your child’s immune system, and when they need protection most.

Rebekah Fenton, MD, FAAP, an adolescent medicine physician at a community health center in Chicago, said that seeing a pediatrician to catch up on vaccinations helps keep classmates, teachers, and others in the school community healthy.

AAP is sharing this information about recommended vaccines and the diseases they prevent:

1. Meningococcal Disease: At 11 or 12, your pre-teen should get their first dose of meningococcal vaccine to protect against meningococcal disease, a fast-acting disease that is life-threatening if not caught and treated within a few hours.

Caused by bacteria that can infect the bloodstream, brain and spinal cord, anyone can get meningococcal disease. Among young people, it is most common in babies and 16-20-year-olds. Infections are spread through close contact like coughing or kissing, and lengthy contact in spaces like college dorms.

Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) vaccine protects against four bacterial strains, labeled A, C, W and Y. Meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine protects against another bacterial strain and is recommended for kids with certain chronic health conditions that make them more vulnerable or anyone 16-18 whose pediatrician recommends it.

Meningococcal ABCWY (MenABCWY) combines protection from MenACWY and MenB. If both vaccines are recommended at the same visit, it can be used

about immunizations. —photo courtesy DragonImages/ iStock via Getty Images Plus

instead of separate injections.

2. Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis

At 11 or 12, pediatricians give the Tdap booster to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). It is a slightly different version of a vaccine your child received as a baby (DTaP), with lower doses of the diphtheria and pertussis vaccines. After this, they will need additional boosters every 10 years.

Tetanus is caused by exposure to naturally occurring bacteria in soil or dust through a break in the skin. Tetanus produces a toxin that causes painful muscle contractions. Also known as lockjaw, it can cause neck and jaw muscles to lock, making it hard to open the mouth or swallow.

Diphtheria causes serious throat infection, breathing problems and heart failure. The vaccine is a lifesaver. Before it existed, diphtheria killed one of every five kids infected.

Pertussis can cause a cough that will not go away and sometimes vomiting or trouble breathing. The protec-

tion your teen got from their childhood vaccine starts to wear off around age 11, making the booster essential. Teens can easily spread the disease, including to infants, who are at even more risk.

3. Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

The HPV vaccine prevents genital warts and works well to protect against strains of the virus that cause more than 90 percent of six types of cancer, including cervical cancer, penile and anal cancers, and cancers of the mouth and throat. Vaccinating kids ages 9-12 allows them to build strong immunity against the virus before exposure. If they do not get the first dose until age 15, they will need three doses.

4. Influenza

The flu is unpredictable and there is no way to know if your child will have mild illness and miss just a few days of school or if they will get seriously ill and need hospital care. But be wary. US flu deaths in children broke records during the 2024-25 season, with at least 216 deaths. AAP recommends flu shots annually for everyone 6 months and older to prevent severe illness.

5. COVID-19

Millions globally, including teenagers and children, have received the COVID-19 vaccine. If your child has never had this vaccine, their immune system will not be ready to recognize and resist the virus that can lead to long-term problems associated with COVID.

Behind on Other Vaccines?

Delaying vaccines leaves your child vulnerable to preventable diseases. The AAP vaccine schedule is designed to prepare their body to resist contagious diseases as early and fully as possible. This keeps them healthy and active, instead of missing out while they are sick.

“Kids’ and teens’ bodies can handle multiple vaccines in a short time because their immune system is in constant learning mode. Vaccines help kids stay healthy by keeping them ahead of serious, preventable diseases,” Fenton said.

Learn more about vaccines at healthychildren.org and catch up on those your child missed. Most vaccines can be given at the same time as others.

Want To Be A Newtown Public Schools District Volunteer Or PTA Member? Plan Ahead

Recognizing their high responsibility to students, Newtown Public School District requires everyone who volunteers to submit to a criminal background investigation and complete a Volunteer Background Check Authorization Form, as well as a Volunteer Information Form and Waiver of Liability each school year.

In addition, all volunteers who will be working with students one-on-one without direct sight-line supervision by staff, or out of public view, must be fingerprinted for a complete criminal background investigation each school year.

These steps must be taken well in advance of the volunteer activity they plan to attend. School officials suggest completing the authorization forms prior to the beginning of an academic year.

Volunteer Background Check Authorization Forms can be found at newtown. k12.ct.us/volunteer. Once completed, the forms should be returned to the school(s) in which a parent will be volunteering.

Background investigations are conducted by Newtown Public Schools Director of Security Mark Pompano. Fingerprint-based criminal investigations are sent to the CT State Police Bureau of Investigations.

Once screenings have been done, applicants will be notified within five days of the results regarding their application to volunteer.

On the day of a school event, prior to engaging in any volunteer activity, each volunteer will present their driver’s license to the respective school security officer. The security officer will physically scan the volunteer’s license in the Raptor System. The Raptor System screens out registered sex offenders.

School volunteerism is an extension of the district’s larger goal of fostering a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.

According to its website, Newtown Public Schools District strives for its schools to “create vibrant communities where students, teachers, and families collaborate to create a supportive and inclusive

environment.”

Another way for parents, teachers, and even community members to get involved is to join a Newtown ParentTeacher Association (PTA). The primary goal of the district’s PTAs is to build a strong connection between families and schools, as well as create a positive learning environment for students.

The Newtown PTA website states that PTAs organize activities and events that benefit students, such as fundraisers, family nights, volunteer programs, and more. These events help raise money for classroom supplies, field trips, or other school needs that may not be covered by the school budget.

Beyond fundraising, Newtown PTAs act as a bridge between parents and school administrations. The PTA website states that they advocate for students by addressing concerns or providing feedback to school leaders.

PTAs also host meetings and informational sessions to keep parents informed about important issues, such as curriculum changes, testing schedules, or educational policies.

Superintendent of Schools Anne Uberti, in her last Message from the Superintendent for the 2024-25 school year, said that PTA support is a part of what makes Newtown schools great.

“[PTA members] have the opportunity to have their voices and ideas heard,

meet new people and build connections within the school and greater community, as well as gain leadership skills that can be both personally and professionally valuable,” Uberti said.

She also said being involved in a PTA gives parents or caretakers a closer look at what is happening in their child’s school by participating in and organizing events that foster a positive school culture.

Parents and caretakers are also invited to join the Newtown Sped PTA, a local nonprofit organization focused on the special education needs of children. Those with an interest in improving the educational, social, and recreational opportunities of children with special needs are encouraged to join.

According to Newtown Sped PTA’s website, the organization offers support to help parents navigate the special education process, as well as connection to other parents, collaboration with teachers, administrators, and the community.

In order to maintain the pickup times listed below, Newtown Public Schools requests that students be at their bus stop 10 minutes prior to the scheduled pickup time

Students should stand back 10 to 15 feet from the road whenever possible. Students should wait for the school bus to come to a complete stop and for the doors to open before approaching the bus.

Children should never run after the bus as it pulls away as the driver may not see them.

If your child has to cross in front of the bus they should be instructed to wait until the bus driver nods their head to signal it is safe to cross the street. Students should also be instructed to cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus;

so they can see the driver and the driver can see them.

If they should drop something in front of the bus, they should leave it until they get the driver’s attention and permission to retrieve the item.

Bus Drop-Off Procedure/Waiver

Students in kindergarten through fourth grade must be met at the bus stop by a parent or known adult, or older sibling. If no parent or known adult, or older sibling (at least high school age) is at the bus stop, children will be transported back to their home schools. If a student must be returned to a school, the following policy is in place: Reed students will be returned to Reed School. Elementary students will be returned to their elementary school. If siblings being returned are from both Reed and an elementary school, both students will be returned to the elementary school together.

If a family chooses, a waiver may be signed allowing its first through fourth grade children to disembark from the bus even if no adult is there to meet the children. No waivers for Kindergarten students will be accepted. Please check your child’s school webpage for the complete procedure and download the waiver.

If you have any questions regarding the transportation schedule, please e-mail alan.colangelo@all-startransportation.com or call All-Star Transportation at 203-304-9778.

For Drop-Off Waivers, please see your child’s school webpage for complete information regarding afternoon drop-off procedures.

Bus Waivers/Stop Change Forms

Each school had sent these to parents and requested that they be completed and returned to the schools. If any parent has not yet done so, please get them to the school their child will be attending as soon as possible (elementary schools only).

Bus Waivers: Applies only to students in grades 1st – 4th. No waiver to get off of a bus unattended will be accepted for any KG student. The waiver is intended to allow the bus to release a student if no adult is visibly present. We don’t know based on if a car is parked in the driveway… the driver needs to base this on if they do not visibly see an adult present.

Stop Change Form: If any family has moved or a student will be getting on/off at a stop different from the home address on a daily basis, this form must be completed. A stop change form is not intended to specify where someone wants a stop; it is solely for notification that their child will not get on/off the regularly scheduled stop, but rather at another regularly scheduled stop.

Bus Stops/Expectations

Students should be out at the bus stop about 10 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Times change slightly based on a number of factors (road conditions, weather, students at previous stops not there, etc.). Students should not be inside house at top of driveways waiting to put coats on when the bus arrives. When the bus stops, students should be ready to board immediately.

Below is a list of bus expectations. The school bus is an extension of the classroom and students are expected to maintain behavior acceptable in a classroom setting. It helps the driver out tremendously if parents would go over these behavior expectations to promote a safe, hassle-free ride for all students. Students should never cross in front of a bus without a visible signal from the driver that it is safe to do so. Likewise, no student should ever run towards/from the rear, alongside of a bus. A driver may not see a student in some danger zone blind spots. If a student drops something, never run up to the side of the bus to retrieve it. There is a danger zone around a bus where a driver may not see the student in a mirror. Always yell out to get the driver’s attention if you need them to remain stopped for any reason.

Photos should be submitted by e-mail to editor@thebee.com and include: the first and last names of those pictured, their grade level, the school they attend, and the name of the person who took the photo.

All of the pictures shown here were submitted by local parents for the start of the 2024-25 school year.

Connecticut Secures Major Win As US Education Department Restores Previously Withheld Funding

HARTFORD — On Friday, August 1, Connecticut Attorney General William Tong and Governor Ned Lamont responded to official confirmation that the United States Department of Education has released previously withheld education funding to Connecticut. Connecticut joined a coalition in filing a lawsuit challenging the Trump Administration’s abrupt and unlawful decision to freeze this funding in July.

Tong said that, although the Trump Administration has reversed its unconstitutional and arbitrary decision to freeze over $53 million for Connecticut schools, these funds should never have been frozen in the first place.

“While students and teachers prevailed today, this reversal does not undo all the long-term chaos, uncertainty and damage the Administration has inflicted on our schools and communities,” Tong said.

He continued by saying that one of the most important things they can do as a nation is to create more opportunities for children through strong funding for K-12 education.

Tong said that he is relieved those funds will be released ahead of the upcoming school year and to provide the predictability Connecticut schools count on.

“We’re also doing our part to lift students up, reduce absenteeism through investments in the [Learner Engagement and Attendance] LEAP program, increasing support for special education, and hope the White House will keep doing their part too,” Lamont said.

On June 30, the Trump Administra-

tion abruptly froze funding for six long-standing programs administered by the US Department of Education, weeks before the school year is set to start.

For decades, Connecticut and other states have used funding under these programs to carry out a broad range of programs and services, including educational programs for migrant children and English learners.

These funded programs promote effective classroom instruction and the use of technology in the classroom, and improve school conditions.

They also fund services such as community learning centers that offer students a broad range of opportunities for academic and extracurricular enrichment, as well as adult education and workforce development efforts.

In Connecticut, an estimated $53 million in federal education funding was frozen, with many ongoing summer learning programs left immediately unfunded.

On July 14, Attorney General Tong joined a coalition of 23 attorneys general and two states in filing a lawsuit and motion for a preliminary injunction. This coalition argued that the freeze violated federal funding statutes and regulations authorizing these

programs and appropriating funds for them, federal statutes governing the federal budgeting process, and the constitutional separation of powers doctrine and the Presentment Clause.

The Connecticut State Department of Education (SDE) later received notice on July 25 from ED that beginning the week of July 28, ED would begin releasing previously impounded federal funds for the current federal and education fiscal year.

The following week on July 30, the SDE received Grant Award Notifications confirming that the entirety of the funds that ED was required to make available to the states on July 1 is being released.

The Office of the Attorney General said that the State of Connecticut is committed to defending educational institutions and students against the Trump Administration’s illegal attacks.

In addition to the lawsuit challenging the freeze of $53 million in funds due to Connecticut schools, Tong said he has filed lawsuits challenging the mass firings and dismantling of the Education Department, unlawful conditioning of K-12 education funding, and the discontinuation of school mental health grant funding.

Students should make sure they register The Newtown Bee for such notices when they report to school each autumn if given that option.

Many schools have a media/press relations department that issues dean’s list and other announcements to local newspapers.

Parents are also invited to share news of their children’s achieve-

ments. Be advised we require copies of anything received from schools announcing that news. Emails forwarded from the school and photos of notifications are accepted.

Notes should include the name and hometown of the student, the school they are currently attending, their major (if set), their scheduled graduation (month and year), and as much detail as possible about the award, honor, record, etc.

They should also indicate what high school and with which class the student graduated.

Photos are also welcome for these announcements. Head and shoulder images are best. They should be kept as large as possible, and sent as a . jpg attachment to an email.

Campus Notes can be submitted to editor@thebee.com. Include a daytime phone number for confirmation or in the event we have additional questions.

ACES Transition To AESA Will Not Include Newtown & Woodbury Preschool And Child Care Centers

NEW HAVEN — Beginning September 1, the team and platform of Area Cooperative Educational Services (ACES) International will officially transition to the Association of Educational Service Agencies (AESA) as the National Global Office to AESA.

Newtown resident and newly appointed AESA National Chief Global Officer Jason Hiruo, who served as the Director and Founder of ACES International for nearly a decade, highlighted in his July 28 announcement that the established ACES International Preschool and Childcare Centers will not be part of this transition.

The preschool centers at 7 Berkshire Road in Sandy Hook and at 124 South Pomperaug Avenue in Woodbury will both remain under the direction of ACES and will continue to operate independently of AESA Global. The two locations have over 50 employees and 150 families attending.

Lucy Fonseca, who currently serves as ACES International Assistant Director, will continue oversight and leadership of the programming.

AESA is comprised of 500 educational bureaus in 45 states, which collectively serve most US schools. AESA reaches 85% of all public and private schools nationwide. Through these agencies, AESA impacts over 40 million students across the country.

AESA National Executive Director Joan Wade, EdD, called the transition

a strategic step forward that expands the national organization’s global mission while preserving the trusted programs and partnerships that school districts and international partners have come to trust over the past 12 years.

She said the transition under Hiruo will maintain the seamless continuity of international work without disruption and expand opportunities that offer more resources, a broader international network, and access to over 500 US educational service agencies that serve over 40 million students.

“Our shared vision with Hiruo is a core commitment to global competence, innovation, and student-centered learning,” Wade said. With Hiruo and his team, she added, “we have an increased capacity and reach.”

Hiruo will be joined by ACES International Head of Projects Meimei Zou and ACES International Head of Operations Angie Cedillo-Pulla.

The AESA Global Office will be headquartered in Connecticut.

Hiruo said his new position will allow him to lead AESA’s global initiatives and expand their shared work across the US and the world.

“We are committed to maintaining our strong relationships and building new ones in the best interest of global connectivity and advancing the competencies of students and educators,” he said.

How Some Newtown Schools Prepare For The New School Year

Some may think the school year starts with the first day of school, with children excitedly riding the bus and teachers making the last few touches to their classroom.

While that is technically true, for administrators and other key figures in the district, the school year starts long before the buildings open their doors for students and staff.

Newtown High School Principal Kimberly Longobucco is one of several people working through the summer, making sure her school is ready for the 2025-26 school year.

With this summer specifically, Longobucco said the biggest project the high school had going on was the roof replacement.

One of the five capital projects in the 2025-26 education budget is for the planning, construction, and replacement of the A, B, and C wings of NHS’s roof.

By the time Longobucco sat down with The Newtown Bee for an interview on July 25, she said the roof was almost done and set to be finished by the following week.

“And then we will have a roof with a 40-year warranty that hopefully won’t leak for us anymore, which is going to make our school year much better, structurally speaking,” Longobucco continued.

She said the old roof was over ten years past its life expectancy date. This was especially apparent in how the high school suffered from significant leaks all over the building, something Longobucco said they dealt with on a near daily basis.

“So it will be a huge benefit … to not have classrooms, hallways, and lobbies leaking,” Longobucco explained.

She was also happy to open up the high school’s parking lot to normal traffic because a section of the NHS parking lot was filled with maintenance workers’ cranes, pallets, and other construction equipment throughout the roofing process.

Beyond construction, Longobucco said a lot happens over the summer. She called organizing both teacher and student schedules “a bulk of their work over the summer,” as NHS has around 1,300 students with their own individual schedules.

These schedules change based on staffing needs, room changes, assignments, and more, so sorting them out for everyone to be ready by fall is incredibly important, according to Longobucco.

She also said they do a lot of hiring for vacant positions over the summer. Thankfully, this year, Longbucco said they are fully staffed at the high school.

“So as long as we don’t have any surprises, we are good to go as far as staffing, which is a great situation for the end of July,” Longobucco said.

The district also hired LeeAnn Browett as dean of students for NHS, which Longobucco called an exciting addition to their team. This was a new position added into the 2025-26 education budget which would help the administrative figures at the high school.

Longobucco said it was a challenge when NHS was reduced from three assistant principals to two assistant principals in 2020.

She said they did not realize it right away because the school shut down for COVID-19. However, once they came back after lockdown with a hybrid schedule, Longobucco said they quickly realized the reduction of that position put a lot more work and strain on the three administrators who were there.

Administrative staff, maintenance workers, facility workers, and custodians have been hard at work making sure Newtown High School, along with the other schools in the district, is ready for the new school year. One of the biggest projects for the high school this past summer was the roof renovation project, which replaced the roofs above the building’s A, B, and C wings.

As dean of students, Browett will take on a lot of the school’s attendance and discipline issues. Longobucco explained that this will free up a lot of time for the rest of them to do things they were not able to do because there was “purely no time.”

“We want to be in classrooms. We want to be able to see students and teachers, and taking that discipline and attendance component right off of our plate, I think, will be really nice,” Longobucco said.

She added that Browett will be a huge asset to the administrative team and for bringing in new ideas from another district.

At The Elementary Level

It is a similar story for Middle Gate Elementary School and its newly hired principal, Jenna Connors. After Connors took on the role of Middle Gate’s interim principal on March 8 of this year, she was unanimously voted by the Board of Education (BOE) as the school’s new principal.

Connors said she felt very fortunate to have been at Middle Gate since spring, and that the experience helped set her

Teachers also meet in their Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to examine curriculum, prepare materials, and make sure they have similar expectations for the start of the school year.

Beyond that, Connors worked on a new Middle Gate handbook that has all the school’s information in one place and acts as a reference for parents. To that end, Connors said it will be shared electronically and posted on the school’s website for easy access.

When The Newtown Bee interviewed her on Monday, July 28, Connors said she was working on lunch and recess expectations, and arrival and dismissal expectations.

These expectations are written with the hope of everyone using common language so students clearly know what to expect in terms of safe behavior.

Connors said this safe behavior does not really differ from the upper education levels.

“Our focus is really on how to be kind, and so we’re kind when we keep our hands and our bodies to ourselves, we’re kind when we use kind words, and that really transcends no matter what setting you’re in,” Connors explained.

She said they use an acronym called SOARS at Middle Gate, a tie-in to the school’s mascot being an eagle. It stands for: spread kindness, own your choices, act responsibly, respect others, and show self-control.

Connors said she is trying to have these expectations tie into that theme.

“So that way, no matter where we are, whether it’s the classroom … or the bus, if we use that as our guiding principles, then we’re being kind human beings,” Connors said.

Summer Cleaning

Another overlooked yet incredibly important task over the summer is cleaning and organizing the schools.

Middle Gate gets a deep clean every summer, with Connors adding that the custodians do an amazing job of making sure the classrooms are ready for the school year. Everything from the classrooms to the gymnasium to the cafeteria is scrubbed clean by a team of custodians.

The school also had several summer building projects, from getting new flooring for the gaga pit to getting the soccer field reseeded.

up to “hit the ground running” for August.

“Like I’m glad I’m coming in already knowing the families, the students, and the staff, so we’re in a good spot to get started with the new year,” Connors explained.

The past summer has been quite busy for her. A lot of what Connors has done, she said, has been created from scratch since it is her first full school year as principal. Connors said she and her team have worked a lot on schedules, creating a new instructional block schedule, and adjusting the school’s special schedule.

Since kindergarten and first grade were cut from the district’s K-6 Spanish Program in the 202-26 budget, Connors said they are building in extra art and library time for those two special areas.

Connors also worked a lot on the initial days back for teachers. A lot of what they do during professional development days, she said, is transition meetings. These meetings have teachers speak to a counselor, language arts consultant, and math specialists to understand any academic, health, or social emotional needs for their new class.

NHS had a big summer project where custodians cleaned out five to six supply closets to streamline which supplies are put where.

This way, Longobucco said students and staff can just go to one location instead of multiple locations to find what they need.

Longobucco also said they are using a classroom to create a “home base” for the high school’s paraeducators and behavioral therapists.

They are also doing a little overhaul of conference rooms, as well as making a space for the school’s new dean of students.

“[We prepare] anything teachers need in their classrooms … like if somebody needs a new desk or if a student desk is broken and needs to be replaced, those are all requests that we manage during summer time,” Longobucco explained.

Perhaps the biggest cleaning project of all is the custodian’s full deep clean of the school, which takes the entire summer according to Longobucco.

However, since NHS has summer school classes from late June to July, Longobucco said custodians cannot start the deep cleaning process until after those classes finish.

—Bee Photos, Visca
From left to right, Head Custodian Rick Thorne and custodians Tyler Paloian, Vinny Pirozzoli, Lee Manna, and Josh Barlow move a new desk into Middle Gate Elementary School.

To compensate, custodians pick areas not used in summer school to clean while classes are happening. Once the summer school kids leave, the custodians move on to areas that they have not gotten to yet or are more highly trafficked.

Longobucco said the custodians follow a strict schedule for this process, which has been a challenge this year because of the roofing project.

“There’s been times where the roofing project has knocked out the air conditioning, so they couldn’t necessarily do parts of the building,” Longobucco explained. “So they’re on a little bit of an even tighter time frame than usual, but they’ve been doing an excellent job.”

Other Tasks

One of the big things the high school is doing for fall is rolling out the district’s Portrait of a Graduate strategic plan. Longobucco said the plan provides guidance that ensures every child in Newtown Public Schools can reach their full potential.

This plan was originally started

before COVID-19, but took a back seat during lockdown. Longobucco said development continued two years ago, and snowballed with Frank Purcaro’s return to the district as assistant superintendent of schools.

“We really jumped into it this school year and regularly worked with our leadership team here at the high school to build it,” Longobucco explained.

They adjusted the plan based on feedback from students and faculty, tweaking definitions and making it more visually appealing.

While there are seven characteristics in the Portrait of a Graduate, Longobucco said they are going to start with three characteristics this year.

This is because administrators figured it would be easier to roll out the plan incrementally.

Longobucco said that, while the plan is starting at NHS, it will eventually be rolled down to the other schools.

Apart from that, Longobucco said they reviewed a lot of data based on

standardized testing like PSATs, SATs, GSS, and AP tests.

“This is to see where we’re lacking, where we could be better, and where we did a really great job to see how we can improve going forward,” Longobucco said.

She and her team have done a lot of brainstorming on how to resolve bathroom issues, as well as demos on potential products that could help with managing hallways and hallway passes.

Longobucco and her team also do some planning for school events. Before the 2024-25 school year ended, Longobucco met with NHS’s student government to talk about spirit week and homecoming plans for the following year.

Longobucco said proms have to be booked “years in advance at this point” to get the dates they want. Dates for spirit week and homecoming are already set, but Longobucco said she and the student government will periodically meet for further planning once those dates get closer.

“That’s really the bulk of what happens in the summer,” Longobucco said. “It’s all the prep work that we can’t get done during the school year.”

When it comes to the new school year, Longobucco said she is excited to have the students and teachers back in the building. While it can be great to sit back and quietly work, Longobucco said it is just that — quiet.

“We went into education to be in busy buildings around kids and teachers, having conversations with kids and encouraging them to grow as people,” Longobucco said. “So I’m really excited to have a new class of rising seniors.”

For Connors, she said she is incredibly proud of her team and excited to be here

“I’m so excited to continue the work we started in the spring,” Connors continued. “It’s an amazing community of families, kids, and teachers, and I’m just really grateful to be a part of it.”
