Beyond grateful Annual Report of Giving 2023

Our mission is to treat and care for all our patients and their families as we would a beloved family member.

On the cover: Sheila Partridge, MD, FACS, FASMBS, medical director for the Center for Weight Loss Surgery, believes every gift to NewtonWellesley “touches lives in a real way.” She’s one of several passionate supporters highlighted inside (see page 9). B / Annual Report of Giving 2023

Our heartfelt thanks Dear Friends, Ellen A. Moloney, MBA

True to our mission, we treat every patient as a beloved family member. With every gift, you bring that indelible mission to life. Through your contributions, you touch the lives of thousands of patients and their families who depend on us in their time of greatest need. This past year has seen our hospital as busy as ever. Our caregivers have given their all to provide the safest, highest quality, and most compassionate care possible to everyone who has come through our doors. Through it all, you have stood by us. And we could not be more grateful. On behalf of the entire Newton-Wellesley family, we are pleased to share this Annual Report of Giving with you as one more way to honor and celebrate your incredible vision and generosity.

Joan M. Vitello-Cicciu, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAHA, FAAN

We cherish our own places within this organization, and together we strive to be the best possible stewards of this precious community asset. As leaders in the hospital’s philanthropy, you enable us to invest in every facet of our excellence—from our extraordinary team to the latest medical advances to life-changing community initiatives. Giving is deeply personal. Yet, with every gift to Newton-Wellesley, we are all united by a shared belief in something beyond ourselves. For generations, we have been here for our neighbors as a source of healing and hope. With your devoted support, we know that even greater things are ahead. Kindest regards,

Ellen Moloney, MBA President & COO, Newton-Wellesley Hospital

Your life-changing impact Dear Friends, Year after year, your generosity truly amazes me. Katie Connolly, MBA

Every day at Newton-Wellesley, I am inspired to see the life-changing impact of your gifts at work. In every corner of the hospital, from the Elfers Cardiovascular Center to the Blum Emergency Pavilion to the Manton Breast Imaging Center, patients and families find the expert, compassionate care that they and their loved ones need. Across our surrounding communities, I see the power of philanthropy in action as well. Through innovative programs and partnerships, we’re extending our reach and meeting people where they are. And we have you to thank. As the challenges facing hospitals and communities have escalated, you have stepped up and helped us meet them head on. Thanks to you, 2023 exceeded expectations for philanthropy. You joined our loyal supporters in contributing more than $11.4 million in gifts and pledges. That number reflects a year-over-year increase of $1 million, climbing for the third year in a row to again reach a new high. Every dollar of your support has been essential. Your gifts—more than 2,500 in all—showed us again how deeply you take to heart the health and well-being on your neighbors and how strongly you believe in Newton-Wellesley. Together, you’ve contributed to so many vitally important efforts this year, from expanding youth mental health care to training the next generation of nurses to equipping our cardiologists with the capability to detect heart disease in seconds. Thank you all for your steadfast support and invaluable partnership. Gratefully yours,

Katie Connolly, MBA Chief Development Officer

A lifetime of generosity Meet Sandy and Don Perrin, and their warmth and hospitality embraces you. Across more than six decades together, “we’ve been so blessed,” they agree. As devoted as they are to each other, they are equally devoted to improving the wellbeing of their community. Growing up along Blue Hill Avenue “with very little” forged a shared sense of gratitude and humility. As a young married couple, they committed themselves to growing a visionary photography business. Along the way, its success led to investments in others’ business dreams. They also have invested their time, energy, and

philanthropic support in area nonprofits, including Newton-Wellesley. As their go-to hospital, “it’s given us the comfort of knowing we’ll receive excellent care.” They’ve gratefully given back, supporting programs ranging from pediatrics to breast imaging to cardiac rehabilitation. The sum of their giving has earned them recognition in our Founders’ Society. From an early age, “in my heart, I was always going to take care of the world,” says Sandy, a philosophy rooted for her in the Jewish ideal of “tzedakah,” seeing charitable giving as a responsibility. To the Perrins, giving is a blessing.

1881 Pillar Society October 1, 2022—September 30, 2023 In our fiscal year 2023 honor roll of donors, Newton-Wellesley Hospital gratefully acknowledges all gifts, pledges, and documented bequests totaling $1,881 or more received during our 2023 fiscal year. Pledges are recognized in the fiscal year they are made at the full pledge amount and subsequent pledge payments are acknowledged at the level of payment made in that fiscal year. Highlighting 1881, the year of our community hospital’s founding, the 1881 Pillar Society recognizes those leadership donors who contribute $1,881 or more annually. Building on a tradition of leadership giving at NWH, members set a standard of generosity and demonstrate that they are truly “pillars of our community.”

Honoring a physician leader’s dedication Barry Sloane and Candace Lapidus Sloane, MD, support Newton-Wellesley in many meaningful ways. Their relationship with NWH deepened with Candace’s appointment as a trustee in 2020. Her board role has given her a lens into what sets our hospital apart, including an abiding dedication to patient-centered care. Inspired by their own experiences with the Radiology team, the Sloanes have generously chosen to make a gift in honor of its physician leader. Unfortunately, Candace requires frequent imaging, often on an urgent basis, because of multiple health issues. When she met Anand Prabhakar, MD, NWH’s Chair of Radiology, she was so impressed by his positive and laserfocused attitude regarding quality and safety. “Anand’s philosophy is present throughout his capable team,” the Sloanes reflect. “They have been so wonderfully considerate and careful regarding Candace’s immunocompromised state.” In gratitude, the couple chose to help provide vital funding to support training and the work environment for his team. “Newton-Wellesley is so fortunate to have such a high-quality Radiology team and a chair who is relentless in his goal to ensure both a superior image and patient experience,” they add. They count themselves fortunate to contribute.

Making our hospital a better place “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”

to the hospital’s well-being in her new role as President of the medical staff.

When Sheila Partridge, MD, FACS, FASMBS, reflects on what giving means to her, she remembers those words of Pablo Picasso.

It’s her family’s hospital, too. She and husband Denis Grehan rely on it for primary care, and she gave birth to both their children here.

“That encapsulates my commitment to giving back,” says the Newton-Wellesley surgeon—and committed donor to our hospital’s 1881 Pillar Society.

She counts herself among the beneficiaries of philanthropy, having seen the impact that donors had in the development of the hospital’s Center for Weight Loss Surgery, where she serves as Medical Director.

She’s called NWH home since 2002. “I grew up here,” she says. She finds a sense of purpose in helping her patients lead longer, healthier lives. She also contributes

Importantly, “charitable giving is a wonderful way to make the hospital a better place,” she believes. “It touches lives in a real way.”

Gratefully helping patients in need At Thanksgiving, Bill and Barbara Norman took the occasion to give thanks to Newton-Wellesley in a holiday video shared with the hospital community. They recounted how Bill’s successful recovery from hip surgery inspired them to create a new fund so all Newton-Wellesley patients have the resources they need to return to their lives. In Bill’s first few weeks after surgery, a “hip kit” of assistive tools proved to be essential in taking care of himself. “It not only made a physical difference, but it also made such an emotional difference,” Barbara says.

Yet they both realized that the out-of-pocket costs may be prohibitive for some patients with limited finances. To Bill and Barbara, that was simply unacceptable. They decided to find a way philanthropically to ensure everyone, no matter their financial means, would have the same opportunity to enjoy the tools for a speedy recovery. In a season of gratitude, their thoughtfulness spoke to what makes Newton-Wellesley so special. “We’re all in this together,” reflects Barbara. They know in their hearts that their gift is making a true difference in others’ lives.

Fulfilling Nancy’s wishes Nancy Fuller Walsh “was always a giving person by nature,” reflects Jim Walsh. While his beloved wife’s life was sadly cut short by cancer, he sees establishing a new fund in her memory as her gift to others. When the couple met three decades ago through the Catholic Alumni Club, “from early on, plain and simple, we were meant for each other,” Jim reflects. He vividly remembers first seeing her walk onto the field for a weekly softball game and being smitten. Playing together led to dating. The following spring they’d sometimes meet on Saturday at Daisy Field in Jamaica Plain to practice. Jim had given her a new glove as a preseason birthday gift, and she

wanted to work on her fielding. In an early spring game, when she caught a fly ball to rob Jim of a hit, “she was ready to jump out of her shoes,” he smiles to recount. Tragically, five months after they wed, Nancy was diagnosed with leukemia. While her dedicated team at Newton-Wellesley exhausted all of the protocols then available, she succumbed to the disease. During treatment, Jim’s six sisters rallied around her to get her to and from appointments. A month before passing away, she recorded her wish for other cancer patients to have help with transportation. Thanks to Nancy’s thoughtfulness, they now will.

Create your own legacy of giving The Eliza P. Kendall Society celebrates a storied tradition of patients and friends creating a legacy of giving at Newton-Wellesley. Eliza began it all, leaving the very first bequest to the hospital in 1886. Today, by remembering NWH in their estate plans, visionary donors like you are advancing worldclass care, right here in our community. We’d love to welcome you into the Society. If you’ve yet to create an estate plan, we can help you get started on a plan that conveys your wishes and explore creative gift strategies that can benefit you and your community hospital. To learn more, please contact Susan Salcetti, Director of Gift Planning, ssalcetti@mgb.org, or visit giftplanning.nwh.org.

A gift to remember When Wendy and John Veale thought about the future and their own legacy, they sought a way to do the most good possible. For the couple, including Newton-Wellesley in their estate plans was “a very easy decision,” says John. Along with believing in the power of healthcare institutions, they’d seen firsthand the impact of NWH. Having witnessed the superb care that a beloved family member received here, they still have very strong feelings about the professionalism and quality of our staff.

They came to trust Newton-Wellesley deeply and value its role as part of the local community. Their experiences not only touched their hearts but also moved them to give back to the hospital through a legacy gift. Early in 2023, they were welcomed as the newest members of the hospital’s Eliza P. Kendall Society. To the Veales, it’s an incredible feeling to give to something you believe in. As Wendy reflects, “it tugs at your heart strings.”

An Eventful Year Gala raises $1 million in community support At the 2023 Gala, nearly 400 guests joyfully celebrated the place that Newton-Wellesley holds in their hearts. “Connections” provided a perfect theme for the event, held May 12 at Boston’s Intercontinental Hotel. The evening inspired more than $1 million in support of NWH and the Community Collaborative.

Golfers contribute to healthier future More than 115 golfers joined us for a day to remember on the links and contributed to a healthier future. Held September 11 at Wellesley Country Club, the annual NWH Golf Tournament raised $200,000 for the Workforce Development Council’s summer youth internship program.

Team NWH among 5K’s top fundraisers In September, over 30 members of Team NWH took part in the Mass General Cancer Center Eversource 5k Run/Walk on the Charles River Esplanade. Together, they raised more than $18,000 in support of the cancer center, placing second among all teams. Annual Report of Giving 2023 / 23

Ways to give Thank you again for your incredibly generous support of Newton-Wellesley Hospital. As meaningful as your gifts are to you, please know how much they mean to the individuals and families that we serve. With every gift, you also lift the spirits of our amazing staff by being there for them at crucial moments. Your gifts took many forms, each with its own powerful impact. Your annual support of the NWH Fund gave our family of caregivers the flexibility to meet our patients’ most urgent needs. Gifts to capital projects allowed us to enhance and maintain our facilities while also investing in state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that our patients receive the safest, highest quality care close to home. Endowment gifts provide stability and sustainability to programs that are key to the present and future health and wellbeing of our community. As always, gifts of every size made a difference. Through every dimension of your support, you truly made this your community hospital. We’re grateful for your ongoing partnership. To learn more about establishing a named endowment or current-use fund, please contact Jaime Mulligan, Managing Director of Philanthropy, at jmulligan5@mgb.org. To learn more about including Newton-Wellesley in your estate plans, please contact Susan Salcetti, Director, Gift Planning, at ssalcetti@mgb.org. To support a fundraising event or explore sponsorship opportunities, please contact Robin Dziedzic, Associate Director, Special Events at rdziedzic@mgb.org.

A note to our community of supporters Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s Development Office makes every effort to ensure our donors are recognized accurately for contributions they have made to support our organization. We sincerely apologize for any errors or omissions in our donor listings.
