old Faces is a showbiz programme that profiles local and international personalities who have distinguished themselves in various professional endeavours. This edition of the programme featured a footballer, Azubuike Egwuekwe, who talked about his background, career, challenges, gains from football and other issues. Bold Faces is aired on African Independent Television (AIT) every Sunday at 12:30pm. Egwuekwe gave his background information as follows: “I am from an extended family, the third child of my mum. I started playing football at the age of 10 and was under 17 when I joined a youth club in Yola. It hasn’t been easy because I have two elder brothers who played football in the past without any success so to do well comparatively was like a dream come true. Football has helped me a lot, at least I can boast of houses and cars. I haven’t had any injuries before and even when I sustain an injury it will heal in one or two weeks at most because I don’t want injuries to cut short my career; I am very conscious, I always talk and pray to my God before I go to the field. My role model is Uche Okechukwu and for the current Supper Eagle team, they are not doing

badly and I think they will improve by the grace of God. Speaking on his relationship with team mates, he said: “we were like one family in the team, you could hardly differentiate if you saw us. Our coach taught us to love one another and that really helped us in the team. In terms of welfare, they took good care of us too. I am using Infiniti jeep for now. My alternative occupation is business, you know we Igbo men like business and I will do anything in business. I love dressing simple and my best food is vegetable and fufu”. My favourite musician is Timaya because he is from Niger Delta and I love everybody from Niger Delta. The boldest step I have ever taking was when my father asked me to stop football as a career, he even threatened to disown me if I didn’t stop playing football and I said if you disown me for playing football then so be it. He sent me packing from his house but after about two to three weeks, I returned to the house and he

asked me what I was doing in his house. I simply told him that this is my father’s house, if there was anybody that was supposed to leave, it would definitely be you. He threatened to call soldiers, I summoned courage and asked him to go ahead and call soldiers and that was how we settled it. Another interesting segment of the programme is ‘Sport Diagnosis’ where a medical practitioner diagnoses and analyses guests on the show. Dr. Sunday Osunkwo, sport doctor said of the footballer: “Igwuekwe’s personality had grown in the country even before he became bigger and in the limelight. He is the tallest defender in the Nigeria Super Eagles; when he is playing his heart beats up to from 150 to 200. When you see a defender that is more than six feet and taller than others in the field, that tells you there is something special about him”. The programme intermittently replays videos of Egwuekwe playing on the pitch.
