to us and we acted our roles based on our scripts just exactly the way it was written.
How did you combine your work in the civil service with the acting in Village Headmaster? We usually go for rehearsals during the weekend and we record at midnight. It did not affect my work.
Was that all you could remember? There was also another script where I played a lead role, and was supposed to marry because I was of age to settle down with a wife but from another tribe. Of course as an Efik man, I dressed in Efik attire. There was a preparation for the marriage, some personalities were in attendance seated for the arrival of my bride. Everybody was dressed up for the marriage ceremony. They presented her and unveiled her; I discovered that she was too small for me to marry. She was a 12 years old girl. I ran away. The guests asked why I was running away, and I told them that the girl they brought for marriage is 12 years old, that I can’t marry her because she was too small for me. The next day there were many telephone calls; the groom is from Cross River State, we did not mention any tribe in the script, and while playing the role, the message we were trying to put across was that if you know that you can’t marry 12 year old girl then put an end to it. The aim of the Village Headmaster was to bring out the societal ills which we try to correct through the so called make belief. That was how the Village
How much were you paid? I was paid N400 till it was rested in 1990. In 1997 the Ministry transferred me to Abuja. Who were the producers you worked with? The producers and directors that I worked with included Mr. Sanya Dosumu,
David Orere, Segun Akinbola , Tunde Oloyede, Olu Obaseki and Bayo Awala. The name Boniface cannot be linked to the tribe that you said the role portrays? In fact when they gave me the role of an Efik, I told them the type of costume for the role of Boniface, that people will identify as an Efik culture. The wrapper and a long sleeve shirt that is how the men dressed to portray Efik culture. The role Boniface represents the two states , Cross River and Akwa Ibom states. Any regret? When the ministry sent me to Jos in 1999 for official meeting for three days, I came back I did not see my eldest son. When I asked his younger brother, he told me that he went out; and that was the last I heard of my son. It was reported in the newspapers and on the Network news of NTA. Even the State Security Service (SSS) searched for him and they did not see him. I know that God has a purpose for everything and I cannot do anything contrary to God’s wish, as a Christian I look up to Him , He is the one that gave him to me and He has taken it back. Why did you choose to be an actor? First of all it is the passion. I love acting and acting was inherent in me; and people discovered that and they said I only need training for me to improve my talent. And immediately I came to Lagos, I joined drama groups. And If I hadn’t become an actor I would have loved to be a chorister doing it for God. I am a tenor singer. I attend Presbyterian Church Wuse, the state of Abuja Parish.
