Josh Fattal (left), Al Bauer, Shane Bauer and Sarah Shourd pose at a reception Sunday. The three American hikers who were freed after being held in Iran traveled to the Jordan area to thank the public for its support. Shane Bauer, Fattal and Shourd were at Jackson Town Hall for a reception put on by Bauer’s father, who lives in Sand Creek Township. “I couldn’t be happier,” Al Bauer said. Shane Bauer and Fattal were released in September after being jailed more than two years in Iran. They were taken into custody along with Shourd while hiking near the border with Iraq. Iran had accused the trio of being spies for the United States. Shourd, Shane Bauer’s fiancée, was released after being detained for 14 months. Shane Bauer said the three have not settled down and are spending time visiting friends and relatives. He said he plans to visit the Middle East again. “We love it there,” he said. What happened, he said, was just an extremely unusual situation and shouldn’t reflect on the people of the region. The Associated Press reported that Shane Bauer will marry Shourd, a Californian, on May 5 in the San Francisco area.

The king and queen of Norway spent eight days visiting Minnesota and Iowa during October. The visit to Minnesota was the couple’s fi rst trip here since a three-day visit to the Upper Midwest in 1995. King Harald V and Queen Sonja were greeted by Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton, former Vice President Walter Mondale and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman when they arrived on Oct. 11. After a visit to Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and St. Olaf College in Northfield, Dayton hosted the king and queen with a reception at the governor’s residence on Oct. 16. The reception was followed by a royal dinner with more than 1,000 guests at the Hilton Hotel in Minneapolis. Maj. Gen. Richard Nash, adjutant general for the Minnesota National Guard, attended the reception and dinner and met the king and queen. The following day, Nash met with the Norwegian royalty at the National Guard aviation facility in St. Paul. During the meeting, Nash presented King Harald V with a gift to commemorate the historic partnership between the Norwegian Home Guard and the Minnesota National Guard. The exchange began in 1974 and is the longest-running military exchange partnership between any two nations. “It was an honor to meet the royal couple and present them with a gift from the Minnesota National Guard,” said Nash, a Jordan High School graduate and New Prague resident. Kevi n Olson, spokesman for the Minnesota National Guard, who noted that “recently these pilots have been either deployed in combat or in support of various state emergencies in Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota.” King Harald V and Queen Sonja concluded their visit to Minnesota on Oct. 18. Before leaving, they attended the dedication of “Cold Recall: Reflections of a Polar Explorer” at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
