HIGHWAYS 169 & 282
Belle Plaine man dies in accident at troubled intersection BY DAVID SCHUELLER dschueller@swpub.com
A crash left a Belle Plaine man dead, and tallied another major accident at the intersection of highways 169 and 282. Tony Ess, 34, was stopped at a green light in his a Ford Super Duty pickup truck at the intersection, in a northbound lane of Highway 169. Soon after 11:20 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, the truck driven by Ess was rear-ended by a semi-trailer driven by Vernon Nelson, 79, of Sioux Falls, S.D.,
according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The truck driven by Nelson was unable to stop and hit the pickup, sending it into the right ditch where it f lipped upside-down, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Nelson was t a ken to St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee with minor injuries, and the Scott County Sherriff ’s Office assisted at the scene.
ONE OF 18 ACCIDENTS The intersection of high-
ways 169 and 282 has played host to several crashes in past years. This year through August, the Jordan Police Department has responded to 18 accidents at the intersection, including three in the month of August, according to a monthly report from the department. The intersection’s total is exactly one-third of the 54 motor vehicle accidents to which the department responded this year through August. Kristin Holtz contributed to this report.
