Club News British Connection Beetle Drive Event a Hit

By Robbin Stratton-Upson The BRITISH CONNECTION CLUB OF SCC hosted their First Annual ‘Beetle Drive’ and Gourmet Pizza Event on February 3 in the Florida Room of the Atrium Building. Following a delicious meal of hot, fresh-out-of-the-oven, gourmet pizza, seventy-nine attendees played Beetle Drive, a classic British dice party game which is a great ice breaker as the participants moved from table to table whilst meeting fellow club members along the way. Prizes were awarded for lowest and highest scores. A beetle themed cake L to R: Elizabeth Wood, Paddy Cooney, was served with tea and coffee. SET Meeting Monday, March 9: Dr. Peter Rubec on Soil-less Agriculture

MON. Mar 9 - Science, Engineering and Technology Club meeting. 7:30 p.m. in the Caper Room, Atrium Building, 954 North Course Lane. There is no cost for guests; anyone interested in science and technology is invited. With more farm land being used for houses, factories, and roads, how will we be able to grow food for an expanding world population? Dr. Peter Rubec, a research scientist at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, will present “Is Soil-less Agriculture the Solution to Looming Food Crisis?” Hydroponics, aeroponics, and aquaponics will be the focus of the possible solutions to meet the potential of a food crisis due to severe drought and over-development of farmland.

Low-Impact Aerobics Club

Low-Impact Aerobics Club recently elected 2015 officers. (L to R) Gerry Harding, President; Joan Juczak, Vice President; Phyllis Hodges, Secretary; Sandy Bolger, Treasurer. Leoma Lovegrove is an impressionistexpressionist painter known worldwide for her vivid colorful paintings. Leoma is a graduate of Florida’s prestigious School of Art and makes her home and international headquarters on Matlacha Island. Every year she greets thousands of visitors where Leoma is inspired to paint with endless creativity. She loves the Matlacha Island and is currently the President of the Matlacha Island Chamber of Commerce and promotes tourism to the Sunshine state. In the United States her works are represented in numerous galleries. More recently, Bealls Florida Department Stores is featuring her as their Florida artist under the designer label Leoma Lovegrove complete with her trademark eye glasses. In Atlanta, Georgia, her portrait of Jimmy Carter hangs in his Presidential Library. Her art is in the private collection of the White House in Washington, DC and in President George W. Bush’s Presidential Library in Dallas, Texas. Lovegrove was honored at an artist’s reception in the White House given by First Lady, Laura Bush. Her artwork has also graced the windows at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Internationally, Lovegrove was commissioned to paint a portrait of Richard Branson for the Virgin Airlines Headquarters in London. Her Beatles Series drew the attention of the city of Liverpool. Leoma was the first American to paint on the replica of Claude Monet’s floating studio in Giverny, France, and she was honored to be the first American artist to have an exhibition in the famous Pierre Bonnard home.

Men’s Club celebrates Valentine’s Day

2020 Centre Nearly Complete

Come tour Kings Point’s new wellness facility at “Ring in the Spring” on March 20 Kings Point’s new 2020 Centre will open in March. The entire Sun City Center community is invited to celebrate the grand opening of this fitness and wellness facility on March 20, 2015 during the “Ring in the Spring” Kings Point Community Festival. The “Ring in the Spring” festival will be held on March 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Kings Point North Clubhouse “front lawn,” and festivities will include a farmer’s market, live musical entertainment, food trucks, opportunities to connect with some of Kings Point’s many clubs and groups and much more! The official Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the 2020 Centre will be held at 11 a.m. followed by small group tours that will continue until 2 p.m. Kings Point residents and guests as well as Sun City Center Community Association members are welcome to attend.
