Clean-up crew

Volunteers Verna Vanvelden and Paul McLenachan were among those who helped clean up the trail at 40 Mile Creek on Saturday. It was organized by the Grimsby Active Transportation Committee.

Evan’s Ride this Sunday Evan Sheldrake is a cool kid. The Beamsville District Secondary School Grade 12 student was diagnosed with severe autism spectrum disorder back in 1998. Has he let it slow him down? Nope. With the help of his dad, Len, Evan’s affliction has become the catalyst for Evan’s Ride for Autism, which will take place this Sunday starting and ending at the family’s trucking business with $20,000 as the goal. With 11km and 22km rides and registration opening at 9 a.m., area residents can get some air, exercise and raise a few bucks for a great cause. M.W.

Hospital must be election priority So much going on and so little space... First, we’ve got this provincial election in front of us. We start our election run having candidates answer some basic questions: why should a voter give you their support, and; an economic-based question. I have always been a big proponent of having an election candidate’s thoughts portrayed word for word and complete, no filtering. There are many reasons for this. First and foremost, media can be pretty darn sneaky when it comes to comments they use and don’t use. When I ask for an answer, candidates have a word limit, when that limit is reached, their comments are cut. All know the rules. It is also good for voters to see how candidates form their own thoughts (in a perfect world they do write them themselves _ this does not always happen but I cannot control that). It is up to each reader to decide for themselves. That is the beauty of this process. Much of the fall municipal election coverage will be the same way, although all-candidates events cannot follow this format. I have been asking people what questions they would like to see put to our Niagara West Glanbrook candidates and I certainly open this up to

MIKE WILLISCRAFT the floor. Just because I have access to this space certainly does not make me all-knowing....far from it....so if you have something on your mind, send me a note at: mike@wn3.ca FOR SURE, everyone wants to know, if elected, what will candidate X do to further the much-delayed rebuild at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. Other than the economy and having jobs for folks, clearing the fog of WLMH’s uncertain situation is at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts... especially those who have needed the place recently. ****** Tomorrow night, people, is one of my favourite nights of the year...Jazz On The Ridge at Peninsula Ridge Winery. Ok, I’m biased as a member of the Pen Ridge Founders’ Club, which organized the event for nine of the event’s 10 years. However, this event simply does not disappoint. Having seen the line-up of entertainment, which

is second to none to any event in Niagara – fabulous food created by local eateries, and stellar wine pairings – there is no place to go wrong. This year I know the folks who have been rounding up the silent and live auction items have outdone themselves. With West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Foundation and McNally House Hospice, guests are always extremely generous. ****** We have got a lot of great feedback on our new online e-edition. If your paper blows away or gets wet (not afraid to admit that it does happen), or if you want to check out all the LOCAL news first thing Thursday morning and your carrier typically covers your area after school, just check: newsnowniagara.ca Right at the top of the page is the hot button for the edition. The entire paper, as printed, is digitally published there – ads and all. The hyperlink feature which allows readers to go right to an advertiser’s website (if they have one) has proven very popular with both readers and advertisers. We will continue to publish individual stories and photos on our website home page, so there will be items on the website NOT included in the print edition, but everything we can generate will be on the site in one form or another.
