HOCKEY WEEK IN FAIRBANKS

New events scheduled for 2015 Hockey Week

D

on’t look now, but the 2015 edition of “Hockey Week In Fairbanks” is right around the corner. This year, the festivities run Feb. 13-22. Your friends and neighbors have been hard at work for the past couple months, organizing all of the favorite activities which have made HWIF a success story. We’ll have the 3-on-3 tourneys, Back Yard Rink Contest, the ice sculpture, blood donation drive, Extravaganza and Skate The Lake to wrap it all up on Feb. 22. See the full schedule on the below and

on the back page. Each year, we try to add at least one new activity to the mix. This year, we have added two. At 10 a.m. Feb. 21, there will be an opportunity for youngsters who think they might be interested in playing hockey. It’s known as “Try Hockey for Free Day.” Fairbanks Amateur

Hockey Association has offered this activity in the past, but this year they asked if we wanted to incorporate it into Hockey Week. The answer to questions like that is always a resounding “yes.” We will provide an hour of ice time and all the gear needed for your little hockey player to “test drive” the sport. We hope that after that hour, your son or daughter will want to go further. The second new activity will consist of a good old-fashioned treasure hunt, known as the Quest for the Golden Puck. We will hide an object somewhere

around town and then provide daily clues until some lucky person finds the hidden object. The winner’s prize is a gold charm from our good friends at Bishop’s Jewelry. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the folks who run the treasure hunt during Golden Days should feel highly flattered. We have essentially copied their idea. We hope the community has fun with this Quest for the Golden Puck, just like we do with the Yukon Quest. The past success of Hockey Week has been built upon the

efforts of volunteers, as well as support from the Fairbanks North Star Borough, Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, Emerald Isle and other businesses throughout the community. The best way for you to honor those efforts is to get involved in Hockey Week. We got that little stretch of cooler weather out of the way at the end of January. There’s nothing but warmer temperatures and sunny skies in the forecast for Hockey Week. Come out and join in the fun. Be a part of “Hockey Week In Fairbanks.”

Back Yard Rink contest is back By Bob Eley FOR THE NEWS-MINER

Winter arrived this week with a cold arctic blast of 40 below temperatures, so it’s finally time to start putting in that back yard hockey rink you’ve always dreamed of showcasing. Hockey Week In Fairbanks organizers are on the prowl to find the best back yard rink in the area and will judge the top rinks in the Interior from Feb. 16-18 as part of a week-long celebration of Fairbanks’ favorite team sport. “I look forward to the Back Yard Rink Contest ever y year,“ Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame president Randy Zarnke said. “The families are excited to have us visit. The adults are proud of the work that they’ve done, but it’s the kids that make it fun. “They want to show off their rink and the special games that they play,“ said Zarnke, who heads up the

judging committee. “It’s a great way to help promote the sport.” The prize for the best rink is a two-tone stainless replica of the 2015 Hockey Week logo (see attached). “This beautiful work of art was donated by the craftsmen at Holaday-Parks. We thank them for their support. Some lucky home owner will be happy to display this beautiful piece in recognition of being chosen as the best rink in town,” Zarnke commented. All you have to do to enter the Back Yard Rink Contest is notify Zarnke of your intent to participate before the start of judging. He can be reached at 452-6857 or by email at itrap2@gci.net. There are usually between six and 10 entries in the Back Yard Rink Contest, according to Zarnke. “When I wrote the book “Fairbanks Hockey Pioneers” it became evident there was a correlation between players who had

back yard rinks and those who moved on to the higher levels of hockey,” Zarnke said. “You didn’t have to go to the local rink to work on your game,” Zarnke said. “You could just lace up your skates and go out in the back yard to work on your shot or crossover move. It makes for better hockey players.” Hockey Week In Fairbanks is a 10-day celebration of the sport set for Feb. 13-22 at locations throughout the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Numerous events for the entire family are on the schedule. Hockey Week In Fairbanks is organized by the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame, with sponsorship from Emerald Isle Pull Tabs and the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department. For more information on Hockey Week in Fairbanks, contact Zarnke at 452-6857 or itrap2@gci.net.

Fairbanks Amateur Hockey Association (FAHA) is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the youth of the Fairbanks North Star Borough that are interested in hockey at any level. During the regular season, FAHA offers recreational or house league hockey programs for both boys and girls, from ages 4–18, and for all levels of play from first time to long time skaters. FAHA also offers a spring league and summer skills and drills refreshers to keep skaters active even when the regular season ends. Our Ice Dragon (4-6 year olds) and Mite (6-8 year olds) divisions offer an opportunity for beginning skaters to learn the great sport of hockey at a very affordable price. We offer rental gear for this division to help eliminate the need to purchase all new equipment while they are learning the sport.

The Fairbanks Amateur Hockey Association’s philosophy is to promote the growth of ice hockey and to provide the best possible experience for all participants by encouraging, developing, advancing, and administering the sport.

FAHA Goals:

• A fair and equal opportunity to participate. • The opportunity for children to learn the basic skills without the distraction associated with an over-emphasis on winning. • An opportunity for new players who wish to play hockey. • An opportunity for those who wish to advance into a more competitive environment to do so. • A safe and healthy environment for all. • Qualified adult leadership.

For more information on Fairbanks Amateur Hockey Association (FAHA), please visit our website www.fahaonline.com

FAHA Philosophy:

What is Tier III? Tier III means your child will be on a house team with other kids that are skating at a higher level. Your child will have the opportunity to participate in tournaments locally and around the State. Tier III teams may travel to 1 or 2 tournaments, in addition to playing in the State Tournament. Teams will play more competitive games. Tier III teams skate an average of 3 times per week. The cost is increased above the normal Tier IV house fees to compensate for the increase in ice time and lower number of players on the ice at one time.

There are some changes in store for the 3-on-3 youth hockey tournaments that will be part of the annual Hockey Week In Fairbanks. The 3-on-3 format will remain the same, but all six of the tournaments will be held Feb, 15 on the Big Dipper Ice Arena outdoor rinks. Previously, the tournaments were held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. “We felt by having it all on one day it would create more of a tournament atmosphere and it would be more fun for the kids,” event coordinator Anna Culley said. “By having it on a Sun-

day, we’re hoping we can get some of the kids from Delta and Healy involved as well.” The 3-on-3 tournaments are for players in the Squirt, Pee Wee and Bantam divisions, with separate tournaments for players in competitive and house (recreation) divisions. The competitive tournaments are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the house tournaments are slated from 2-4:30 p.m. “We figured we’d try it this way for a year and see what happens,” Culley said. “If it works out, we’ll keep it like this. Otherwise we’ll go back to our old format.” Teams can enter the tournament by emailing rosters to annaculley30@gmail. com. Brackets are filled on a

One of the new programs scheduled for Hockey Week In Fairbanks is designed to gauge a youngster’s interest in the sport. The “Play Hockey For Free” clinic is scheduled from 10-11 a.m. Feb. 21 at the Big Dipper Ice Arena. T he clinic is geared toward potential players ages 4-8. All of the equipment needed, including skates will be provided by various hockey organizations in Fairbanks and the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame. Local coaches and players will be on the ice to help the young skaters get familiar with the game, event organizer Anna Cul-

ley said. “It’s a great way for parents to let their kids try hockey to see if they really like it before making any commitments,” said Randy Zarnke, president of the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame, which organizes Hockey Week in Fairbanks. To register your child for the hour-long clinic, go to www.tryhockeyforfree.com. Participants in the clinic will receive a USA hockey jersey and sticker. The clinic kicks off a big day of hockey events at the Dipper. Immediately following the clinic is the annual Hockey Extravaganza, featuring numerous booths and interactive games on the mezzanine level inside the Dipper, while several

celebrity games are taking place on the ice. Among the booths will be an inflatable rink, jersey designing, face painting, hardest shot, dress like a goalie, design a button and more, according to Culley. Celebrity games start at 11 a.m. with a senior coed game (age 50 and older), followed by a high school alumni game at 12:15 p.m., the annual Guns and Hoses Games (police departments vs. fire departments) at 1:30 p.m. and the Gold Kings/ Ice Dogs/Nanooks Alumni Game at 2:45 p.m. The Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place at 4:30 p.m. and the day concludes with the final game of the North American Hockey League series
