We’ve Redefined The Healing Process

2015

A N N UA L R E P O RT

Dear Friends of Kirkland Cancer Center,

We are so pleased to bring to you our 2015 annual report. We hope that you take the time to review and share in the achievements we’ve made, a sample of the people who’ve touched us, and even the celebration of our first two years in our new comprehensive facility. The data and numbers presented on these pages are precious because they represent real individuals like you - mothers, grandfathers, uncles, sisters, sons, friends, coworkers, and spouses.

Our first and foremost priority is caring for our many patients who’ve entrusted us with their care. We understand that they have a choice so when they choose us we acknowledge that choice by giving them our best. Two of the ways we give our best is our weekly Cancer Conference and Breast Conference, where a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists, and other specialists discuss current cases to achieve the most effective evidence-based treatment plan for our patients. We are invested in our patients and their families, our neighbors, our community and West Tennessee as a whole. Giving our best makes us all stronger.

Our goal is simple: to continue to offer cutting edge technology, early detection screenings, community education/awareness and evidenced-based cancer treatment in a collaborative environment. We thank you for each occasion to serve you.

Sincerely,

Gina Myracle

Bethany Herr & Ottillia Plunk

A Dialogue with Friends These two amazing young women have forged a friendship like none other – a uniquely beautiful one. Their radiant smiles which light up the darkest corners inspire countless others. Their similarities are uncanny. Ottillia and Bethany are both fighting breast cancer which has now returned in other sites. They both started their chemotherapy treatments around the same time, and started setting their appointments at the Kirkland Cancer Center on the same day so they would be there for each other. Each of them have a loving supportive husband and young children. They even graduated from the same high school, but didn’t really know each other then. They actually have fun at treatment together, and the staff are overjoyed when they see them. “She’s the one person I can talk to that completely understands everything that I am feeling,” Herr said. “It’s the same way with Bethany. If I’m angry that day I can say: I am so angry,” says Plunk. Plunk considers

herself “the bitter one” of the two, feeling unrewarded for her efforts in sticking to the diet and exercise plan after her first bout with cancer. Herr admits that sometimes she is bitter too, although she may not look like it. Through all of the trials they have faced together and within their respective families, their faith and trust in God has been fundamental in dealing with each day. Plunk says that as bad as the second cancer diagnosis is, it has made her family the ‘Christian family’ they always aspired to be. Herr says she remembers one time since her diagnosis praying harder than she ever had before, then took a shower and washed her fear down the drain. Knowing that there is no cure for metastatic cancer and the five-year survival rate is 22%, Bethany and Ottillia continue to wage this battle because there is still hope.

Making Steps Towards NAPBC Accreditation Our pursuit of accreditation as a Breast Center of Excellence through the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers is driven by our desire to raise the bar to the highest level in the care we deliver to the women of West Tennessee affected by breast cancer. It creates a level of accountability that demands eliminating any barriers to delivering the best care available, and the processes required to achieve accreditation have already benefited our patients beginning with offering prompt and state-of-the-art imaging; through the evaluation and biopsy

being performed by well-trained surgeons and pathologists; continuing on to surgical procedures that eliminate the malignancy and include the option for reconstruction; early involvement by medical and radiation oncologists who offer the most up-to-date, proven therapies and clinical trials; and finally inclusion of a mature Survivorship Program that addresses the long-term needs of women who have moved past their treatment phase on to life beyond their breast cancer. - Dr. Dean Currie
