Rising tuition and a Rocky job maRket leave some in doubt

A

college education was once considered a necessary step to a promising career and better way of life. But a 2010 survey of 3,000 Americans by COUNTRY Financial suggests that idea is slowly changing as college tuition increases and graduates working in their degree field becomes more of a rarity.

While a majority of Americans, 63.5 percent, still consider a college education worth the cost, that number is down considerably from 2009 where 79.1 percent believed college to be a good financial investment.

Recent graduate Jamie Grove says she believes her education was worth every penny.

Grove completed her undergraduate degree in international relations at UC Davis, and finished her grad school program in special education at Sacramento State. Grove says ultimately, she believes her life is better for it.

“I had a ton of hoops I had to jump through to get me to where I wanted to go,” Grove explains.

“But in the end, I’m so thankful I did it because I will get to do what I want to do in a career that is personally rewarding to me. I think a lot of people can’t say that about their jobs.”

Millions of students are looking optimistically to the future by enrolling in colleges across the country. In fact, for many students, it’s not about money or job stability — it’s about doing what you are passionate about. Carlos Ramos Jr. enrolled in the culinary program at Le Cordon’s Bleu’s Sacramento campus because he has always had a passion for cooking.

“I like making people happy by feeding them,” Ramos Jr. says. “It’s what I’ve always wanted to do with my life.”

Brenda Antonio is enrolled at Universal Technical Institute’s automotive collision repair program. She is enthusiastic about her new career path.

“ In the end, I’m so thankful I did it because I will get to do what I want to do in a career that is personally rewarding to me. At Universal Technical Institute, students learn how to work in the automotive industry.

Supervisor of Admissions Support Gina Castellino says the benefit of learning a trade is that you’re learning a specific skill set that will guide you toward a specific career, unlike a general degree that can lead to many possibilities.

“This is a niche field and it trains students in this specific interest,” she says. “They’re able to take their passion and apply it and have a successful career in the end.”
