earTh Day ever We’ve made great progress in the 47 years since the first Earth Day was held in 1970. But forces in our government today are threatening to reverse the tide of progress and turn factbased science into a divisive issue.
“Earth Day never has and never should be a partisan event, but rather a positive affirmation of the beauty of nature and our obligation to work sustainably with it,” says Cory Warshaw, a representative for the Sacramento March for Science, which will be held Saturday, April 22. “That is not a Republican or Democratic idea, that is a humanfocused idea. For we all need water to drink, clean air to breathe, and solid ground to live on.” Now more than ever, those who support science and conservation
are needed to take a stand. It will take more than a holiday or a march, more than a hashtag or a button on your jacket. Saving the Earth requires action, in ways large and small. In this guide, we’ve gleaned insights from local environmentalists on why this Earth Day matters and how to take action. We’ve also compiled Earth Day events and workshops where you can get together with your fellow humans and explore ways to do your part.

I
n my role with the Sacramento Electric Vehicle Association, I talk to a lot of people at events, schools and businesses. Most of them aren’t in the market for an electric vehicle, but once we start talking, they fall in love with all the aspects that make owning an EV so smart and fun. Here are six reasons why most people (including you) should be driving an EV:

You thInk cars should be fun
Once we get their butts in the seats, the biggest thing we hear from people is how fun electric vehicles are to drive (visit our calendar at www. saceva.org for upcoming test drive events). EVs are quiet, so you can talk on your Bluetooth and enjoy the radio without the rumble of an engine. They handle like a dream (more on that later). And let’s face it, going to the gas station isn’t fun at all.

You need a new car anYwaY
If you are facing an expensive auto shop bill to keep your current gas car alive, consider getting an EV instead. If it’s your only car, get a plugin hybrid so you can use all electric power for your local driving and switch to gas for your annual family trip to Disneyland. If you are a two-car household, you can extend the life of your working gas vehicle by putting those miles on your EV. Don’t overlook a used EV — with so many returning from leasing, there are some real bargains out there.

You lIke to save moneY
There are more than $10,000 in incentives just waiting for you to claim them. There’s the federal tax credit of up to $7,500, California’s $2,500 rebate and other incentives, like SMUD paying for your EV’s first two years of electricity (around $599). Oh, and you won’t be buying gas!

You are a slave to new technologY
If you already get a new phone or computer every year, why are you still driving the automobile equivalent of a Commodore 64? The technology used in electric vehicles is charging forward every year. For this reason, the Sacramento Electric Vehicle Association recommends leasing instead of buying. That way drivers can reap the benefits of newer EV models (things like better range and faster charging). Many new EVs can lease from $60 to $250 per month.

You want to save the world
If you are at all concerned about the future of our planet, this is something you can do NOW to make a difference. In states like California, where half of our electricity is from non-carbon sources, you would be powering your vehicle with clean, locally-produced energy. And your car gets cleaner every year as the grid gets cleaner.

The California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC) is a powerful network of local governments, non-governmental organizations, businesses, and individuals supporting policies
and projects where producers share in responsibility for managing problem products at end-of-life. A statewide nonprofit organization formed in 2007, CPSC’s tagline is “Design It Green, Take it Back.” We believe the producers have the primary responsibility to design products for durability, reparability, and recyclability. If not, producers should be primarily responsible for funding and managing the recycling program which is well advertised, free at end-of-life, and convenient for the public.

Not since the original gathering in 1970 have we seen such a brazen disregard for the clear trends the data present. What’s one thing people can do to protect the planet? One of the best things people can do to protect the planet is to get informed and ask good questions. It can often be daunting as there is so much information, but you don’t need to be an expert to have an intelligent opinion.
