aelyn Singleton has always been a “big picture” thinker. At 17, she already has a healthy résumé of community activism and leadership experience under her belt with no plan to slow down anytime soon.

“I’ve always been really into community work,” she says. “When you do something because it’s the right thing to do, you ... think more of the bigger picture than just yourself.”

“We’re the ones who are gathering [and] presenting the information,” Singleton says.

“Having a fully developed conference and workshops that we know, I think that’s going to connect a lot more with the youth.”

For the past three years, Singleton, who recently graduated from C.K. McClatchy High School and is headed to Sacramento State in the fall, has been an integral member of Girls on the Rise, a leadership, service and advocacy organization for young women of color in south Sacramento. Formed in 2013 by the Center for Community Health and Well Being, the group is a way for girls to identify issues in their community and address them through action projects.

According to Katie Keeler, program manager at the Center for Community Health and Well Being, developing girls’ leadership skills contributes to their personal and professional success, which in turn benefits the whole community.

“Fostering leadership in young women in general is really essential in driving equality, uplifting communities and encouraging forward progress and change,” Keeler says.

The theme of this year’s leadership conference, “Success Starts With Self-Care,” featured two workshops on an issue that the girls found affects many members of their own families and communities: stress. One workshop focused on identifying stressors and how they affect all aspects of health. The other was centered on healthy coping mechanisms such as music, art and yoga.

care tools to use in their daily lives. Whether making good nutritional choices or taking the time to decompress through yoga, the hope is that physically, mentally and emotionally healthy individuals will spread positive interactions throughout the community.

“When people are so distracted by [their] problems, they’re not able to advocate for themselves,” Singleton says. “Think if we all put in a helping hand … how amazing this community would be.”

On political unicorns Shortly after Hillary Clinton announced former governor of Virginia Tim Kaine as her veepstakes winner, the worried texts, Facebook posts and conversations started piling on: “Just another boring white guy.”.

“He’s awful on reproductive rights.”

“Does Hillary owe Bernie supporters something?”

Chill out. Tim Kaine is fine, OK? I get it—I really do: Another old white man! A Catholic for abstinenceonly sex education! That push to deregulate big banks!

Clinton doesn’t “owe” anybody anything—that’s not how politics works. That’s not how life works. Issues are complicated. Politicians (who happen to be people) are complicated, too.

Besides, it’s reductive to dismiss Kaine wholesale based on some of his policy positions, past or present.

Yes, Kaine once advocated for abstinence-only sex education, but in 2007, citing studies, changed his stance. He has also spoken publicly about his commitment to a woman’s right to choose—and his voting record reflects that.

He also gets an F rating from the NRA, has a long history as a civil rights advocate and, although it took him awhile to get there, supports same sex marriage and LGBTQ rights.

Big picture, Tim Kaine is solid.

If you still can’t stomach voting for Hillary Clinton, fine. Good for you for sticking to your convictions, regardless of the possible outcome.

But, maybe it’s time to realize that there is no magical unicorn of a politician who is pure and untarnished, according to your very subjective definition of such.

There’s no such thing as a political savior, and it’s time to stop demanding one.

Let them speak Re “Hello, anarchy” by Evan Jones (SN&R Letters, July 21): I agree. The folks holding the permit have the right to speak whatever they believe. That’s called freedom of speech; commies hate freedom of speech, as do Scientologists. I hate it also when the other person is speaking something I do not believe. It’s natural to want the other guy to shut up when we feel “cognitive dissonance” creeping into my well-rehearsed narratives, but we should refrain from shouting them down, because the universe is about to give us a gift, a new idea! A new idea, if better than the old idea, will change our future for the better. But first you must lose the idea that you “know it all already” and then “engage” others on subjects you’re passionate about. It really is a great way to educate yourself—maybe the best form of education! And all we have to do is engage smart folks who hold different opinions than ourselves and pay attention when they write, and when we hear a new idea, inspect it carefully. Compare it to the idea that you had used before the new one showed up. Your brain has the capacity to judge what “fact” is more important than the other facts; let it do its work. Believe what you tell yourself and don’t be uptight. The future is coming. Allow yourself to change with it.

Re “The United States of Trump” (SN&R Feature, July 21): There is a sickness and depravity infecting the Republican Party. The vitriol and hate directed toward Hillary Clinton at the GOP Convention reached a new all-time low in political annals.

There were aerial signs reading “Hillary for Prison,” rallying cries of “lock her up” and a public call for Hillary Clinton to be executed.

A Republican delegate from New Hampshire, Al Baldasaro, sunk even lower when he said “Hillary Clinton should be put in the firing line and shot for treason.” And remember the words of GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson: He twisted things around and came up with the idea that Hillary has loose ties with Lucifer; and the lies and ignorance went on and on. So Mr. Trump, who

K.J.’s alternate reality Just-released emails reveal how the mayor used city staff for political maneuvering and attempted power plays against NCBM

In July of 2013, Kevin Johnson had just prevented the Sacramento Kings from moving to Seattle. His days were busy shilling influential locals to buy season tickets, and maneuvering to prevent signature gatherers from putting an arenasubsidy referendum on the ballot. But, on July 26 of that year, the mayor—who often likens himself as Sacramento’s CEO—also found time to fly to Atlanta and play human-resources director and personally conduct an exit interview of a low-level worker with the National Conference of Black Mayors.

legal victory against the mayor, reveal the lengths to which Johnson and his staff went to mop up blowback from his takeover at NCBM. The more-than 70 emails and documents, which the mayor worked to keep secret for more than a year, don’t appear to contain any incriminating criminal evidence or “smoking guns” regarding Johnson or his ascension at the mayors group. But they do reaffirm a contentious, costly and time-consuming conquest of the Georgia-based nonprofit.

Perhaps more importantly, these Johnson communications also show how the mayor uses public city staff and his

private employees to advance his political ambitions.

“Having a second, or alternate, bureaucracy that’s outside the government system … I think that’s unusual,” is how Peter Scheer, with the Northern Californiabased First Amendment Coalition, described Johnson’s administration at City Hall.

And they also function as a template for how a 21st century politician can use private email, such as Gmail, to skirt transparency, a case study that First Amendment and freedom-of-information experts refer to as a new frontier for elected leaders in California.

Scheer argued that Johnson’s use of private emails should be a concern.

“I think that’s inappropriate,” he said of his widespread use of Gmail accounts to avoid scrutiny from colleagues and the public. “Just ask Hillary Clinton.”

These latest Johnson emails, which a Sacramento Superior Court judge ordered the mayor to turn over to SN&R on July 18, focus on a time frame beginning in June 2013, just weeks after Johnson’s controversial election as president of NCBM. During this period, the mayor’s team— lead by employees and volunteers with his Sacramento-based Stand Up education nonprofit—hustled to assure NCBM board members that Johnson would restore the credibility of the group. They also worked with legal firm Ballard Spahr to audit NCBM and get its finances in order.

Johnson himself and staff also hoped to terminate then-executive director Vanessa Williams, whom they accused of poorly managing the group and misspending hundreds of thousands of dollars in funds.

WhitEWaShiNg citY hall Robert Bowser of East Orange, N.J., who oversaw the vote for Johnson as president—was already arguing that Johnson rigged a May 30 vote that made him president, and that his election was illegal. This matter eventually went in front of a judge with the Superior Court of Fulton County during the summer of 2013.

In the emails, Johnson himself urges staff to squash bad publicity about his rise to president of NCBM. For instance, the mayor was concerned with an opinion piece published by the Atlanta Daily World, authored by George E. Curry, former editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association. The story attempted to make the case that, when Johnson took over as NCBM president, the vote was invalid because it violated several of the group’s bylaws.

Johnson emailed staff in July 2013 in response to Curry’s story: “[W]e need to refute this asap … we cannot let this stand,” he wrote. The mayor was sensitive that negative press in Atlanta would impact his agenda at NCBM. Specifically, he wanted to remove Williams as executive director and also complete a top-to-bottom audit NCBM finances, and he might not be able to achieve these goals if his presidency was called into question.

The emails and documents obtained by SN&R also show that a significant amount of work on NCBM issues was performed by city of Sacramento staff. For example, several documents illustrate how former city staffer and mayoral aide Cassandra Jennings spent countless hours performing outreach to mayors across the country, and that she was assigned to contact at least a dozen NCMB board members so as to shore up support for Johnson’s presidency, among other tasks.

The emails also reveal how workers with Stand Up, which is supposed to focus on Sacramento-based public-education issues, devoted many hours working on the NCBM project. One record even detailed how Stand Up Executive Director Stephanie Mash flew to Atlanta in September 2013 to deal with NCBM fallout.

And, as noted earlier, Johnson himself traveled to Atlanta to conduct a basic human-resources interview with an NCMB staffer, Heather Head, the group’s former marketing and communications director.

Although whites make up 35 percent of the population, they comprise 53 percent of the city’s workforce, including 70 percent of the city attorney’s office, 72 percent of sworn firefighters and 75 percent of sworn police officers.

“What we care most about now is what can we do going forward to start reflecting the diversity of the city,” Mayor Kevin Johnson said during a July 19 subcommittee meeting. “these numbers are dismal. This is not good.”

Additionally, whites comprise 63 percent of management positions. And among these, 119 men and 113 white people made more than $120,000 per year compared to only 38 women and 44 people of color.

And rather than get better over time, some agencies have gone backward.

The rate of african-american employment decreased for both police and fire departments over the past decade. Last year, 38 black police officers represented less than 5 percent of the force, down from 2001, when 67 black officers represented 8.7 percent of the force. There were only 23 black firefighters last year, equal to 4.5 percent of the department. But in 2001, the department was nearly 9 percent black with 41 African-American firefighters.

Last week, Johnson reiterated the commitment of fire Chief Walt White and police Chief Samuel Somers to improve diversity. During the last two years of police academy classes, 43 percent of cadets were people of color.

At the subcommittee meeting, Caity Maple, vice president of the group Fem Dems of Sacramento, a local club that promotes social equality between the sexes, rattled off single-digit percentages of female mayors (5 percent), city attorneys (4 percent) and city managers (0 percent) in Sacramento’s history.

tall OrdEr When the Sacramento City Council last month approved a 15-story condominium tower proposed for the heart of Midtown, it didn’t mean an end to the pitched, months-long battle over Yamanee. It just meant the next phase: a lawsuit related to the California Environmental Quality Act. On July 14, opponents of the project sued the city, listing Yamanee’s development company as an interested party.

Neighborhood activist Karen Jacques confirmed her involvement in the lawsuit to SN&R. Jacques also confirmed the involvement of William Burg, who appealed Yamanee’s initial approval by the city Planning and Design Commission.

“I want to live in a city where the rules are clear and people know what they can and cannot do and extensive public input (to the general plan) is honored,” Jacques said. “My feeling was that i did not have any other ethical choice other than to be involved.”

The suit requests an injunction to prevent construction. Yamanee attorney James Wiley said opponents would have to present evidence they’re likely to prevail in the case to obtain the injunction.

Principal developer Ryan Heater told SN&R he’s discussed the suit at length with his attorneys and that his opponents are misguided. “I feel very strongly that we’re on firm legal ground here,” Heater said. “They can wish it not true or that the rules aren’t as they are but again, we feel very good about this.” (Graham Womack)

In the summer of 1993, when I was 21, I moved from the United Kingdom to the United States. Political to my bones, I was, in part, fleeing what I saw as British provincialism: the Margaret Thatcher era’s nostalgia for empire and glory, kitted out in the grimier, football-hooligan realities of post-imperial decline.

And then, somehow, things changed. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the country found a way to integrate, almost despite itself, into much of the goings-on of the European Union. For those who grew up during these years, British Europeanism wasn’t just one of many possible worlds; in the minds of the young it simply was the world.

Except that it turns out it wasn’t. For many older, less affluent, less educated Brits, all of that opportunity was an illusion: it gave them a paper right to travel and work anywhere, while in practice they felt it simply meant they were competing for jobs with millions of newly arrived migrants from poorer parts of Southern and Eastern Europe. It gave them economic growth rates that masked vast income disparities. It provided a real estate boom that left those in the provinces living in dilapidated housing far from London, and those trying to buy into London real estate having to compete with global investors who pushed prices up beyond all reason.

And so, when they were told that a vote to leave the EU, to divorce the country from the Brussels bureaucracy, to strike out alone and separate out from the messy economic and political struggles between EU member states, would be a disaster, a majority of British voters essentially shrugged, said “up yours” and voted against all of the multicultural, multiracial, large-scale immigration implications of the union. Their vote will, inevitably, be the fault line around which British and European politics will be arranged for years to come.

I have been in London since shortly after the Brexit vote. In those short weeks, Prime Minister David Cameron has resigned and Theresa May has taken his place. The pound has sunk nearly 15 percent in value against the dollar. The opposition Labour Party is in utter disarray. The governing Tory Party is also fractured. The fiercely nationalist UK Independence Party is basking in Brexit. A country that a few weeks ago was economically wedded to the 27 other member states of the European Union is now preparing for a years-long, and acrimonious, set of negotiations with a “them” that until last month was an “us” about everything from trade relations and the sharing of criminal justice data to immigration.

Britain has long prided itself on the extraordinary durability of its governing classes. London is a wondrous cultural hub.

And that won’t change anytime soon. But the country as a whole suddenly seems small again, vulnerable, lost in the fogs of its own contrariness. Ω

A revolution of mercy How Loaves & Fishes’ co-founder Chris Delany forged a culture of radical love and service

A collage hangs on the wall next to Chris Delany’s desk in the Sacramento Loaves & Fishes Welcome Center. It evokes the classic “American Gothic” painting—man with pitchfork, woman, farmhouse in the background—but with a few differences.

Instead of surly Midwestern farmers, it’s a decade-old photo of Chris and her late husband Dan. She’s sporting sunglasses and a half-smile. He’s wearing overalls under a black sweater and a pin that reads “Housing Now!” Smiling cut-outs of homeless guests, volunteers and staffers peek out from the background. Instead of a pitchfork, Dan holds a protest sign.

“OUR GOV’T LIES,” it reads.

It’s not the message you’d expect to see in the welcoming center of Sacramento’s largest provider to the homeless community, but one in line for a couple who built its legacy serving the region’s most vulnerable.

Chris is an 83-year-old anarchist. She’s radical, a purist. Her principles honed and unyielding.

Over the years, she’s been arrested a dozen times protesting the nuclear arms race.

She’s served AIDS patients, prisoners and the mentally ill. Teamed with Dan, this couple has been responsible for some 7 million meals served to the region’s homeless over the span of three decades.

Dan died last October following a long battle with dementia. He’d been with Chris for 48 years, married for 47 and had two children, John and Rebecca.

The Delanys founded Loaves & Fishes—Sacramento’s now-massive nonprofit serving the many needs of the region’s legions of homeless men, women and children—in 1983. For three decades, they were the standard-bearers for a population the government could not or would not help. Dan was the visionary, the one who cooked up lofty ideas and spoke eloquently and loudly for the homeless.

Chris was both the engine and soul of the organization, making the impossible happen daily while setting an example on what it means to take homeless guests in without judgment.

Humble, caring and joyful, Chris is still the heart of Loaves & Fishes. She’s white-haired, with a sharp wit and a grandmother’s smile. She spends her mornings in the Visitor Center hugging homeless guests, answering calls from desperate folks looking for a place to go and writing thank-you notes to donors.

“She’s right in the center in this army of workers,” says Gerrie Baskerville, co-director of Loaves’ Jail Visitation program.

Baskerville first met the Delanys in 1980 at their memorial for the activist Dorothy Day, who co-founded the Catholic Worker Movement that inspired many— the Delanys included—to dedicate their lives to service and activism.

But before all of this, Chris was a nun.

Dan was a priest. And when they met that fateful 1967 summer in southern California, their lives changed forever.

“Dan used to say, ‘There is no path.

The walker makes the path,’” Delany says.

And the one she’s blazed is remarkable.

God, love and anarchy From her Los Angeles upbringing to the decades serving California’s homeless, Delany has lived a life of inspiration. She was the ultimate complement to her fiery husband Dan, and vice versa. Together, the couple forged a life that knew no bounds.

They founded Catholic Worker houses in two cities, aided hundreds of thousands of Californians in need, raised two children and sparked a revolution of mercy that continues to blossom in Sacramento today.

Delany likes to tell this story of an angry guy who called Loaves a while back because the nonprofit was requesting donations of shrimp for a holiday meal. He didn’t think the homeless deserved shrimp.

“I was so pissed. I said, ‘Well, they do,’” she says.

“He said, ‘Well, I was needy and I got out of poverty.’

“And I said, ‘You know, some people do a really good job and pull themselves up by the bootstraps. But some people don’t even have boots. You’re lucky you had boots.’”

To understand how Delany came to view the world in this light, it helps to know her story.

The daughter of Sicilian immigrants, Delany arrived in the world on top of a kitchen table in East Los Angeles in 1933, in the heart of the Great Depression. Her father, Salvatore Pacino, worked in a factory. Her mother Caroline was a seamstress who’d grown up in Pueblo, Colo., where her grandfather had worked as a coal miner. He died of black lung when Delany was about 3.

Delany grew up in an Italian neighborhood surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins. She was the middle child, very fond of her older brother John, who died in World War II’s Operation Tiger exercise when he was just 19.

Her parents worked hard so she could get the education they never had. Early on, she was sure she’d determined her calling.

“I always wanted to be a nun since I was in first grade,” she says. “Nuns taught me and I just felt a call to it.”

After graduating from Immaculate Heart High School in Hollywood, Delany joined the ranks of the school’s nuns. She taught there for 16 years.

“Then she met my dad, who had these radical plans,” says Delany’s daughter, Rebecca MacLaren.

There’s a passage in the Bible,

Matthew 25, when Jesus makes the big reveal of how folks are going be judged when they die. You know, “I was tired and you fed me,” “I was naked and you clothed me.” That whole thing.

Delany remembers a moment near the end of her tenure as a nun, reading this passage and really taking it in for the first time.

“I thought, ‘Oh, my God! That’s how we’re gonna get to heaven or not!’” she says. Her next thought: How the hell am I going to do that at this school?

“Soon after that, I met Dan,” she says.

“Is that a miracle?”

Dan first saw his future wife at a dinner party in the summer of 1967. She was 34, he was two years younger. Dan had been a priest for just one year. He was an idealist, bright-eyed and brimming with energy.

Delany had been spending the summer in Santa Barbara on a tertianship—a kind of spiritual retreat for Christians. She was back in Los Angeles for the weekend to prep for the school year.

MacLaren remembers her father talking about meeting her mother for the first time.

“I saw your mom and that was it,” he said.

Delany remembers it this way: “I was smitten with him immediately, only neither of us showed our ‘smittenness,’” she says. “It was instant, I guess, for both of us.”

The two stayed up talking that evening with a mutual friend, another nun, until 11 p.m. And when Delany returned to finish her tertianship, Dan came out to Santa Barbara for a retreat of his own.

He visited her regularly that summer, the two talking for hours on the beach. By October they were hopelessly in love. With a leap of faith, the nun and the priest left their positions in the church.

“That’s when it got interesting,” Delany says.

Dan had this great spirit for social justice. He was deeply inspired by the Catholic Worker Movement, a collection of anarchistic Catholic communities founded by activists Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin. MacLaren says the Catholic Worker Movement was controversial, even to Catholics.

“It didn’t care about winning huge amounts of influence,” she says. “Its focus was on acts, work.”

They dedicated themselves to addressing the immediate needs of people who had little or nothing, serving them and then challenging the societal structures that created such poverty and pain in the first place.

“Just kind of calling bullshit on that stuff,” MacLaren says.

The Delanys opened the Los Angeles Catholic Worker house in 1970. The change from working with students and textbooks to serving the poor was not easy—particularly for a woman who’d been half-expecting a picket-fence lifestyle with her new husband.

“I had a hard time getting into having homeless people around, mentally ill people,” she says. “I was used to nuns.”

During this time, the couple and their Catholic Worker friends fed the homeless community on Skid Row every day. They opened up the first floor of the Catholic Worker house at night to those who needed a place to sleep.

Over time, Dan had tensions with other leaders at the house. Eventually, the couple decided to move on. The Delanys drifted for some time after.

They passed a year picking cherry tomatoes and advocating farmworkers’

They then lived in the East Bay, looking for work and living on food stamps. “[That] was another very interesting experience for me,” Delany says. “Do we buy toilet paper or soap today? It’s very challenging.”

Around 1978, a friend visited the Delanys.

She told them there was no Catholic Worker Movement in Sacramento, that they should move out there and start one. So they did.

The couple bought an old home on 12th Street between F and G streets. Today, it’s home to the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, but back then it was a dilapidated mess. They enlisted volunteers to clean the place up, furnished the house and opened Sacramento’s Catholic Worker house, serving poor families who wanted to visit loved ones in prison.

Here’s how it worked: Inmates in Folsom Prison could only receive visitors on Saturdays. Many of their loved ones would spend all their money on travel to Sacramento for the visitations and couldn’t pay for hotels or food. Chris and Dan Delany made up for the difference, giving 35-40 family members free lodging through the weekend and driving them up to the prison in their Volkswagen van. Delany would feed them all.

“When we had done that for several years we thought it would be a good thing to start a soup kitchen, like most Catholic Workers,” Delany says.

They had no idea what that would grow to become.

A lighthouse of strength Spend some time with Delany, and you’ll start to wonder if she understands her impact on the world. Ask about leadership, and she’ll laugh.

“That’s funny,” she says. “I’ve never thought of myself as a leader.”

“I would totally disagree,” MacLaren says.

Many in Sacramento remember Dan Delany’s leadership. He was larger than life, a bearded visionary, a man unafraid to go to battle in his mission to serve the homeless.

Chris Delany’s style has always been a bit different. When MacLaren thinks of her mother and her life’s work, she’s reminded of that old lighthouse metaphor. Some people are like lighthouses, the saying goes, in that a lighthouse doesn’t go out saving people, it serves its purpose simply by standing strong and casting its light, a pillar of spiritual fortitude and emotional guidance.

“My mom is the lighthouse and my dad was search-and-rescue,” she says.

In 1983, Chris and Dan did something radical: They bought an old tavern on North 12th Street and turned it into a dining room for the city’s growing homeless population.

They named it Loaves & Fishes after the famous biblical story in which Jesus performs

a miracle by feeding the multitudes with just a handful of food.

“When Loaves & Fishes opened its doors on August 8th, we served about 70 people in all,” Dan wrote in that year’s Thanksgiving newsletter. “The number of the hungry who come to us has grown to the point that on Oct. 31st we served about 375 meals, with the usual daily number during October running between 250 and 350 meals.”

It was obvious the Delanys and their volunteers had tapped into a great need. The ’80s were a difficult era for the country’s poor. At the time, president Ronald Reagan defunded mental health services on a national level in the way his home state of California did in the decades before. He also cut funding in social safety net services.

“A lot of people did go through this safety net,” Delany says. “We began to see growing numbers of men and women, with children.”

As the homeless population grew over the years, so did the call to feed them. On September 29, 1992, Loaves & Fishes served its 1-millionth meal. October 28, 1999, marked its 3-millionth. Last year, one month before Dan’s passing, Loaves served its 7-millionth meal on September 17.

“Because the rise of homelessness in Sacramento at that time, we had to develop more and more services to try and cope and help them survive,” says Leroy Chatfield, who served as Loaves & Fishes’ first executive director from 1987 to 2000. “It was a major growth spurt, let me tell you.”

In response to the rise in female guests, they created Maryhouse in 1986, a day shelter for women and children. Seeing the need for children at Maryhouse to continue their educations, they created the Mustard Seed School two years later. They opened up Brother Martin’s Courtyard in 1988, an outdoor space with a fountain where guests could drink coffee and enjoy donated day-old pastries while waiting for the kitchen to begin serving.

To sustain the growing homeless population, Loaves built a larger dining room on North C Street, and an expanded waiting area called Friendship Park in 1991.

They opened Mercy Clinic for the sick.

Genesis for the mentally ill. Jail Visitation and the Legal Clinic for those in trouble with the law. A shower house, a library, animal kennels.

“Every time we saw a need, we put another program in,” says Baskerville, who has worked at Loaves since its inception.

“And too bad, because we’d rather have it decrease than increase.”

But as the years pass, the need simply grows. How do they pay for it all?

“It’s called the Bank of Faith,” Chris says. Loaves & Fishes refuses all government funding (anarchists, remember?), but their contributions from community and religious organizations are profound. According to tax documents, Loaves received $6.3 million

in donations and grants in 2015, and just under $1.5 million in noncash contributions.

“We live on the small amounts that people give us every month,” Baskerville says. “We don’t have any orange juice for breakfast? Somebody brings in a case of orange juice.”

Same goes for baby carriages, school supplies, food and volunteers. Loaves & Fishes offers 12 programs to homeless guests, and partners with a dozen or so more homeless service providers. They staff 80 employees—about 30 percent of whom have been homeless—and saw almost 3,000 volunteers pass through last year. Their impact on the homeless population seeking emergency help is undeniable. In 2015, the dining room served 16,016 guests more than 171,773 meals, the wash house saw 29,178 hot showers and shaves, and Maryhouse provided daytime shelter services to 2,012 women, 23 single fathers and 1,310 children.

All this thanks to a couple of Catholic anarchists in a soup kitchen some 33 years ago. There’s a parable in the Bible that uses the mustard seed as a metaphor for the potential of great things coming from small beginnings.

“That’s what I think Dan and I did,” Chris says. “We planted this seed, and then people came with everybody’s work, volunteering and donating and everything. It’s now a huge tree.”

‘You do what You can’ Delany shuffles down the path from her home to the Jesuit Volunteer’s house next door. Wearing a summery floral purpleand-white shirt, she transports her Key lime pie with care. It’s a Tuesday in early July. Tonight she’ll eat dinner with the young volunteers, as she does on occasion with each year’s group. She stops at the end of the path, at the entrance to a garden. Dan’s garden. He used to to work out there for hours. He loved it so much that he’d asked for his cremains to be spread out among these plants.

She surveys the lawn, still, frozen in memory, before taking a breath and moving on. It’s impossible to spend time with Delany without feeling her profound sense of loss, of grief.

“Those of us who knew them know that Dan couldn’t have done what he did without Chris,” says Cara Taylor, who ran Hope House—the region’s first safe living space for people suffering from the AIDS virus—in its earliest years. As the Delanys focused their efforts on serving Sacramento’s homeless in the ’80s their Catholic Worker prisoner initiative

tapered off, leaving the house on 12th and F out of use.

But while on a retreat with a local priest, Chris learned of the priest’s efforts to serve Sacramentans suffering with AIDS. He mentioned that most landlords would not rent to people suffering from this mysterious illness, leaving many homeless.

“So I said to Dan, ‘Hey, that sounds like something we really should get into,’” Delany says.

“That’s a great example of how they challenged a community’s thinking at the time,” says MacLaren of her parents.

Think about it: It’s 1987. The AIDS epidemic has just taken hold. It is a deadly, nebulous illness. Folks are unsure how it is contracted, but everyone knows that, at this time, a diagnosis means death.

Beyond that, the disease is predominantly affecting gay men, a population already suffering from deep discrimination.

“Homelessness and poverty is one thing, but this really uncharted, unknown territory I think speaks volumes to the idea that they were no-bullshit when it comes to serving a vulnerable population,” MacLaren says.

Volunteers from the community—largely from LGBT organizations—would come and take care of the residents. Archives at Loaves & Fishes show photos of Hope House guests smiling, living together in peace. Turning the

album’s pages, one can see the disease begin to take hold, to weaken the residents. In response to their guests’ failing health, the Delanys partnered with the UC Davis Medical Center to create a hospice in Hope House’s first floor.

It was good to help them, Delany says, but she’ll never forget the sound of the van driving up the alley to carry off residents who had died.

“That was very sobering,” she says.

How does one do it? How does she keep fighting when the pain of the terminally ill, the homeless, the poor seems to never end?

“You do what you can,” Delany tells the young volunteers at dinner, “and you do the best you can. If you’re tired, take a break.”

Even today, 33 years since starting the nonprofit with her husband, Delany does what she can. Call Loaves & Fishes any given morning and she’s the one to answer the phone. Walk into the welcome center and she’ll greet you with her trademark cheer and humility.

“All of these people have been touched by Chris’ example, and by Loaves & Fishes, and have had opportunities to incorporate that gift in seeing other people as real people in all that they do,” says Joan Burke, director of advocacy at Loaves & Fishes.

“You feel like you’re in the middle of a miracle,” says Karen Banker of the

nonprofit. “She’s been the center to all of this for years.” Seven million meals.

Hundreds of thousands of mouths fed.

Tens of thousands of volunteers, donors and staff. It’s impossible to gauge this Catholic Worker duo’s impact on the Sacramento community.

“It’s this widening circle,” Burke says. And it keeps growing.

One of the Jesuit Volunteers recalls a recent conversation she had with Delany on her porch.

“When is fig season over?” the volunteer asked.

“When the figs stop falling off the trees,” Delany said.

It’s a Zen answer, but then Chris is quite Zen for a Catholic. You almost have to be when dedicating your life to a problem that just seems to grow as the years pass. See a need. Serve the need.

Repeat.

To Delany, the answer to our homelessness problem is a change of perspective.

“I think the biggest need is to see them as human beings,” she says. “And to make an effort to see that they have a place to live and get off the streets.”

For her part, she’ll serve as long as she’s able.

“You do the work that you’re called to do, and God will do the rest.” Ω

Hellu, who was born in Brazil and has been a San Francisco resident for 20 years, said in 2005 he read an article about two 18-year-old men in Iran, charged with being homosexual, that were blindfolded and publicly hung.

“It affected me tremendously,” Hellu said, and spurred him to “portray homosexuality in a more intimate way; how two men live together without being overtly sexual.”

Enter Darrin, with whom Hellu has been for nearly 10 years, and photographing for just as long.

Hellu calls himself a constant observer, and he spots tiny details, like a phone hung askew on a bright orange wall, and creates narratives around quiet, passing moments, even though the series was a reaction to a shocking one.

“For me, it’s about my personal story … from my gay perspective,” he said. Where there is a lack of nonsexual imagery of homosexuality in the arts, Hellu aims to represent the tender and mundane side of togetherness, which may have different players as heterosexual coupledom, but shows it’s the same game—love and companionship.

In the gallery, the bulk of Hellu’s photographs are in a four-by-four grid. He also shares wall space with another artist, David King, whose work is very different than Hellu’s, but they complement each other well. King, currently of Grass Valley and formerly of San Francisco, uses vintage magazines and catalogs to carve out thousands of tiny rings, circles and rectangles to carefully arrange into abstract, geometric or amorphous forms—it’s the original cut-and-paste method. His cutouts are little cells, building blocks of the bigger picture, and it’s no coincidence that his collages are reminiscent of the view through a microscope or telescope—his first glance through a microscope in elementary school “shocked and amazed” him and still informs his work all these years later. His largest pieces in the show are 3 feet by 3 feet, and are remarkable for the sheer number of circles and rectangles he cut and their overall effect. It’s pointillism with paper. The show includes a few dozen mixed-media drawings, too, with science-fiction-esque geometric images superimposed on landscape photos from an old magazines, and others looking like Jamie Hellu’s “Kissing.” were made with coffee stains. King’s next series is also inspired by nature: Moths he encountered while hiking in New Zealand.

The show is up through Saturday, July 30, at Jon Stevenson Gallery (2020 I Street), and Hellu’s work is also currently at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley (1060 Heinz Avenue, www.kala.org) and in September he’ll exhibit a solo show at Thacher Gallery in the University of San Francisco (2130 Fulton Street, www.usfca.edu/thacher-gallery).

Keep Out of Reach of Children Does child-proof cannabis packaging work? Some say parenting and labeling are just as important

ot kids? Then you know that they can get into things. Eating Play-Doh won’t send a child to the hospital, but cannabis edibles might, and that concerns parents who worry about children getting into their medicine.

Packaging companies offer plenty of child-safe options to dispensaries, like pop-up canisters, push-and-turn bottles, locking baggies and shrink-wrapping kits. Both Colorado and Washington require them. For instance, Denver-based OrganaBRANDS provides its retailers with “child-resistant exit bags” with printing that reminds Coloradans the responsibilities of carrying cannabis. But there isn’t much of this type of packaging in Sacramento-area dispensaries, especially for edibles.

Why? According to the experts, they don’t work.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says, “There is no such thing as ‘child-proof ’ packaging,” because studies consistently show that kids can eventually learn to open anything on the market. Instead the CPSC defines “child-resistant” or “special packaging,” as containers that are “significantly more difficult for children under five” to open. But what about older children in the house?

“These measures neglect to address the demographic that is actually trying to get into cannabis edibles intentionally: teens,” says Kristi Knoblich, chief operating officer and co-founder of Kiva Confections. Knoblich says child-resistant packaging is expensive, not eco-friendly and gives parents a false sense of security.

Child-proof packaging isn’t required in California, but many in the cannabis industry are adopting safety measures anyway. Others contend that safe storage and proper parenting are more important than how the cannabis is packaged.

She remains a strong advocate for child-safe packaging, which she calls “an absolute necessity” for the industry’s future.

“Child safety is a top concern for cannabis businesses,” adds Knoblich, whose Kiva chocolates come in adult-styled opaque packages with a clear warning. In this era of self-regulation, Knoblich hopes California looks toward the real goal: “preventing accidental access by children and intentional access by teens through educational initiatives,” she says.

Devil may want ice cream: More than two years after his popular restaurant the Eatery closed, Jess Milbourn is ready to resurface with a new effort in West Sacramento.

Instead of slinging gourmet burgers, Milbourn will scoop ice cream and other frozen treats at Devil May Care, which he aims to open in late August. It’ll be a tiny place—patio seating only—somewhere in the Broderick neighborhood. Milbourn will announce the precise location any day now; keep an eye on Devil May Care’s Twitter at @dmcicecream.

in West Sacramento. Devil May Care will be the city’s only scoop shop that makes its own desserts.

The main attraction will be frozen custard, along with gelato, soft serve and ice pops. Scoops will probably cost around $3-$3.50.

Devil May Care will also offer vegan ice cream—not just for the sake of being vegan, Milbourn said, but because coconut milk or cashew milk have entirely unique, delicious qualities. As for flavors?

“The goal is not to stop with the latest trendy flavor combination,” he said. “Sichuan peppercorn? Hey, if it works.”

Boil this: After more than a year of

sitting idly, the Assembly Music Hall space will finally transform into something else—but it won’t be a live entertainment venue.

Instead, it will become one in a small chain of restaurants, the Boiling Crab. The casual eatery specializes in Cajun seafood, and it aims to open 1000 K Street, Suite 100, in early November. There’s already one Boiling Crab in south Sacramento, in addition to a handful of locations elsewhere in California as well as Texas and Nevada.

The concept is pretty simple: choose your seafood, such as crab legs, crawfish or shrimp; pick a seasoning blend; and decide how much spice you can handle. The result gets steamed or boiled in a bag—“to preserve the flavors,” according to the menu.

More grill time: In Japan, izakayas are bastions of boozing and latenight snacking. Sacramento’s best izakaya Binchoyaki (2226 10th Street) just got even more legit by extending its hours on Fridays and Saturdays until midnight. Ω

Summer colds are the worst—all that sneezing and aching while everyone else soaks up the sun. Sorry for the pity party, but my last week has been spent armed with tissues, and trying to kill germs with one of Metro Kitchen & Drinkery’s cold-pressed juices. The selection changes daily; last week I downed the Kale + Apple + Ginger ($6). I’m not saying it’s a miracle cure, but the juice—thick and frothy with an earthy taste and just the right zing— did briefly make me feel a little less sorry for myself.

For years, Revolution Wines stood out as Sacramento’s first urban winery—with decent but limited food options.

There were cheese plates, bruschetta, a couple of sandwiches, maybe a flatbread. Items were usually tasty with wine and generally inoffensive, but not particularly exciting. The menu read more like a wine bar and less like the bistro it was calling itself.

But for the past year, the culinary side of Revolution Wines has been gradually changing—and improving—under executive chef Teddy Gibanov.

Last year, he introduced a burger, which quickly became a favorite around town. The owners revamped the teeny-tiny kitchen, most notably adding a hood in March and giving Gibanov more ways to flex his creative muscles. Now, Revolution Wines is a legitimate dining destination regardless of whether or not you drink. There’s even Sunday brunch.

With all of the development, Revolution Wines celebrated a grand reopening last weekend. While the dining room was already cozy and charming, it looks even more contemporary and stylish now, with a fresh coat of paint and warm lighting. The patio, shared with Temple Coffee, remains one of Sacramento’s most pleasant outdoor dining options. Servers are friendly, professional and knowledgeable about wine, if a little leisurely.

Considering the classy interior, flowing drinks and date-night vibes, the prices are more than reasonable.

For example, there’s a glass-and-entree special every Friday night, which usually costs $15.

Revolution Wines posts a tempting preview photo on Instagram each week, or you can solve the mystery by calling ahead. On an evening earlier this summer, it was ahi poke with chenin blanc. Though there was a bit too much soy sauce in the poke, it made for a lovely pairing and, overall, an excellent deal.

Similarly, on Thursdays you can get a glass of red wine with a burger for $15—a huge bargain, considering the burger alone costs $15 any other day. With bacon, caramelized onion and melty American cheese, Revolution’s burger is one of the most flavor-packed versions around. And the thick patty actually arrived at the requested mediumrare—an impressive feat—alongside herby, salty and wonderfully crispy fries. The only strange misstep was the abnormally pale bun, a housemade brioche that felt spongy and damp before crumbling apart. Based on the ringing endorsement of Rodney Blackwell, the blogger behind Burger Junkies, I’m willing to assume it was an off night.

I was also amazed by the bargain that is the steak panzanella salad ($13), which would be more accurately described as “steak with panzanella salad.” Unfortunately, only half of the strips of steak were medium-rare, while the other half were medium-well and dry. As this was consumed on a different evening than the burger, I can’t blame the mistake on a single bad night.

The mac ’n’ cheese ($9) delivered, though, even rivaling pricier versions at the Rind. Just the right amount of truffle oil permeates the creamy cheddar-Parmesan sauce, rich and comforting with big hunks of bacon and a nice crunch from fresh breadcrumbs.

Gibanov also offers a rotating pasta special as well as a daily seafood.

Recently, it was grilled halibut ($15) draped over an heirloom tomato salad with a bright and basil-forward pistou. With a little walnut-juniper oil drizzled over the flaky, tender fish, every component of the summery dish worked beautifully together.

Gibanov’s talent and range show through the specials—and repeat visits—but he does need to work on consistency. Still, despite a couple of slips, the halibut dish alone made me eager to return and taste Gibanov’s latest experiment. Ω

The promise of more than 40,000 chicken wings beckons at the third annual Sactown Wings festival. From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, stuff your face with chicken and beer surrounded by live music, games and other lovers of the staple bar snack. Broderick Roadhouse, home to the East Coast-style, roasted-then-fried, roasted-then-fried, whole jumbo wings, took first place last year for best overall wing. That team will return to defend its title against 12 other competitors, including Fire Wings, Kupros Craft House, Evan’s Kitchen and Adamo’s Kitchen. Rumor has it that Barwest is gunning real hard to take back its best hot wings title from Chicago Fire as well.

It’s also your first chance to try grub from Highwater, the concept taking over Pour tickets House, before it opens in August. Maybe the world is ready for a vegan show—ahem, plant-based show—but that time slot says the network isn’t ready to let the West Coast wake up to it.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

as Eliza’s father Alfred Doolittle, they include: Tarig Elsiddig, funny as the flirtatious fumbler Freddie Hill; Debbie Reeves and Christina Carter as Freddie’s mother and sister, respectively; KT Masala as Mrs. Pearce; and Diana Cossey as Henry’s mother.

When Higgins succeeds in his experiment, he congratulates himself as the greatest teacher ever, but what about his student? That’s something the protagonists and the audience are left to ponder.

Director James Wheatley expertly moves all concerned to a fitting, wistful conclusion, bittersweet but satisfying. Ω

George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion moves to New York—Harlem, to be exact—in Lawrence Thelen’s delightful, insightful Higgins in Harlem. Eliza Doolittle is no Cockney street urchin here, but like Eliza, her speech is less than standard.

It’s 1938 and this Eliza (perfectly realized by Missira Ross) is a homeless Harlem girl whose speech is nearly unintelligible. When phonetics professor Henry Higgins (Tory Scroggins, nicely suited—and perfectly suited to the role) bets fellow linguist Conrad Pickering (Romann Hodge, wellcast) that within six months under his tutelage, he can pass the girl off as a university-educated African princess.

The plot pretty much follows the original, although it’s funnier than I remember Pygmalion being. The play’s time period coincides with the Harlem Renaissance, and the setting provided Thelen real-life inspiration for the social and gender advances he explores.

Ancillary characters populate the family created in this world. Led by the hilarious Coleman Daniel

Flora is in love with Pele. It is just two days before their wedding, in Kate Tarker’s An Almanac for Farmers and Lovers in Mexico. But there is a problem: For reasons Flora does not understand, Pele has been turned into a hummingbird. As she carries him everywhere in a cage, she confronts government bureaucracy, a mysterious god-figure called San Cristobel, and her three friends who love Flora—and each other.

Rachel Pinto is a wonderful Flora, distraught at the thought of losing her Pele forever, and frustrated at the bureaucracy she finds everywhere.

Kane Chai is San Cristobal, the godlike figure in Buddhist garb who acts as narrator (and occasional participant) of the piece. He seems to find humor in the whole situation and has a mysterious smirk as he watches his subjects try to get out of situations he manipulates.

Matt Fyhrie, Sarah Green, and Renn Andrews are Flora’s friends, who each make their own personal voyages of discovery as they work toward freeing Pele (Antonio de Loera-Brust) from the spell under which he finds himself.

The script is sometimes confusing, but it all ends well. The barn setting is beautiful with minimal but effective sets, and a nice breeze blows through the building during the one-act play.

Woody Allen’s Café Society spends much of its 96 minutes promising to be better than it turns out. At least it never threatens to be as terrible as his last, Irrational Man, or as plagiaristic as Blue Jasmine (which should have been called A Cable Car Named Desire).

Café Society is almost as derivative as Blue Jasmine, but this time Allen steals from himself, particularly his classics Radio Days and Bullets Over Broadway and his masterpiece Annie Hall.

From Radio Days, he draws the wistful nostalgia for a lost entertainment world (in this case, 1930s Hollywood); from Bullets Over Broadway, a subplot involving the hero’s mobster brother; from Annie Hall, a rueful strain of love lost and fondly mourned.

Jesse Eisenberg plays Bobby Dorfman, a Bronx 20-something transplanted to the glamorous Hollywood of his uncle Phil (Steve Carell), a powerhouse agent who drops names like Ginger Rogers and Bette Davis the way lesser mortals use “and” and “the.” While Bobby is waiting for some sort of entry-level job with Phil (“We don’t want to emphasize the nepotism”), Phil assigns his secretary Vonnie (Kristen Stewart) to show Bobby the sights.

him down—she’s seeing somebody. We soon learn—and Bobby eventually learns—that the someone is Uncle Phil himself, waffling between staying with his wife Karen (Sheryl Lee) and leaving her for Vonnie. Just as Bobby resolves to marry Vonnie himself and take her home to New York, he learns the truth, and the romantic triangle resolves itself with Bobby losing out.

Back home in New York, Bobby becomes the manager of a nightclub owned by his shady brother Ben (Corey Stoll). He meets and marries a blonde beauty with the same name— Veronica—as his lost love (Blake Lively, thanklessly wasted; in a way it would have made more sense if she and Kristen Stewart had switched roles). At home Bobby is distantly attentive; at work he’s as aloof and urbane as Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca.

Then, one night—of all the gin joints in all the world, Vonnie and her husband Phil walk into Bobby’s.

In Jesse Eisenberg Woody Allen has found the perfect actor to play the kind of role for which Allen himself is now too old. Eisenberg’s diffident rhythms and vocal fluidity fit Allen’s lines better than almost any other—Kenneth Branagh, Owen Wilson, Jason Biggs—who has tried to shove his feet into those shoes. Café Society is trifling but likeable; it echoes many of Woody’s greatest hits, but in a way that evokes pleasure more than it does disappointment. Ω

Captain Fantastic

A man raising his six kids in a rigorous existence in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest (Viggo Mortensen) ventures down to Arizona for the funeral of his wife, where his in-laws (Frank Langella, Ann Dowd) express their determination to sue for custody of the kids and raise them with the benefits of “civilization.” Writer-director Matt Ross draws good performances from all concerned (including George MacKay and Nicholas Hamilton as Mortensen’s two oldest sons), and he treats his story evenly without setting up cardboard heroes and villains. But the pacing is a little too even—plodding, in fact, and the movie peaks two or three times before the closing credits finally roll. In the final analysis, Ross gives us little reason to care what happens to this smug hippie and his half-savage, know-it-all brood. J.L.

Ghostbusters

Four women (Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones) join forces to fight a supernatural infestation plaguing New York. The 1984 blockbuster’s avid fans may bristle at the effrontery of remaking it (with women, no less), and they may not care to cut the new version any slack.

But the plain truth is—with all due respect to Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Rick Moranis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and director Harold Ramis—the original was popular beyond its merits. The new one is every bit as funny, and with a rather more engaging story (by Katie Dippold and director Paul Feig). Tributes to the first movie abound, and everyone but Moranis makes an appearance. (Even the late Ramis is paid a sweet tribute.) McCarthy and Wiig shine, of course; Jones, too, but McKinnon steals the picture. J.L.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

A problem boy in New Zealand’s foster child system (Julian Dennison) goes to live on a remote, hardscrabble farm with an older couple (Sam Neill, Rima Te Wiata). When the woman dies unexpectedly, the boy and his new “uncle” go for an extended trek in the dense bushlands, where they become unwitting fugitives from justice and the objects of an intense and thoroughly misguided “manhunt.”

Writer-director Taika Waititi adapts the late Barry Crump’s novel Wild Pork and Watercress, and the result (besides the improved title) is a quirky delight, filled with rough charm, surprising adventures, disarming humor and near-impenetrable New Zealand accents. Neill and Dennison form a solid bond of screen chemistry, and the supporting players are well cast, especially Rhys Darby as a character aptly named “Psycho Sam.” J.L.

The fifth installment in the worst animated-feature franchise in movie history continues the formula of its predecessors: celebrity voices (Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Queen Latifah,

Swiss Army Man

Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert make their feature directing debut with this strange, surreal, wholly original and surprisingly emotional existentialist black comedy. Paul Dano stars as Hank, a suicidal castaway who gets a new lease on life when he befriends Manny (Daniel Radcliffe), a flatulent corpse who washes up on the beach.

Manny possesses inexplicable powers—his powerful farts allow Hank to ride him off the island like a Jet Ski, and his rotting body serves as a water purifier—and the two men form an intense bond that might only exist in Hank’s malnourished and deteriorating brain. Dano was born and bred for this sort of cuddly dementia, while Radcliffe has never been better, and the two actors forge a great onscreen rapport. Kwan and Scheinert can’t quite sustain the invention and energy all the way to the end, but most of Swiss Army Man is dazzlingly warped stuff. D.B.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie

Those boozy, self-absorbed women Edina and Patsy (Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley) are back, along with Edina’s longsuffering daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha)—and all that’s changed is that they’re 24 years older and Saffron has a teenage daughter (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness). Back in 1961, a lot of people tut-tutted that Bob Hope and Bing Crosby had made one too many Road pictures, and the same dynamic is at work here—except that Saunders and Lumley have stretched things out even longer than Hope and Crosby did. The BBC sitcom’s happy-camper fan base will probably be pleased, and there are celebrity cameos by everyone from Kate Moss and Lulu to Jon Hamm and Dame Edna Everage, but the hilarity is labored and dreary. Director Mandie Fletcher is powerless to strike sparks; the fire has gone cold. J.L.

Star Trek Beyond

On a routine search-and-rescue mission into uncharted space, the Enterprise is attacked by thousands of alien crafts and destroyed, its crew decimated and the survivors dispersed on the surface of an unfamiliar and hostile planet. The quality of the rebooted franchise drops off sharply this third time around, but it’s strong enough to please the fans. Simon Pegg and Doug Jung’s script is affectionate, often amusing, but dramatically muddled.

J.J. Abrams might have fixed that, but Justin Lin is the director here, and story and character are not his strong suit. Visual effects are state of the art for 1985, and Stephen F. Windon’s cinematography is murky, which the 3-D glasses only make worse. On the plus side, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and the rest (including Pegg) do their usual yeoman work. J.L.

Adam Devine, Wanda Sykes, Jennifer Lopez, Simon Pegg, Seann William Scott, Jesse Tyler Ferguson), lame gags and frenetic movement, all in the service of a virtually nonexistent story—and the less sense it makes, the better.

And once again, inserted at regular intervals are the thrashings of that annoying squirrel and his slippery acorn (inspired by Wile E. Coyote but entirely lacking the comic genius of Chuck Jones). This rendition, like all the ones before, is a harmless but worthless waste of time; reviewing it is as pointless as spending a restaurant column covering the opening of the latest McDonald’s. J.L.

The Infiltrator

Undercover customs agent Robert Mazur (Bryan Cranston) helps bring down some of the banks that are laundering money for Colombian drug cartels. The movie is well acted (including by John Leguizamo, Diane Kruger and Amy Ryan as Cranston’s fellow agents; Juliet Aubrey as his wife; and Benjamin Bratt as a drug trafficker) and director Brad Furman gives a gritty sense of time and place (the 1980s in New York and Florida). But it’s all so familiar from other movies that it comes as a bit of a surprise to find that the story it tells is pretty close to what actually happened to Mazur and his cohorts. Writer Ellen Brown Furman (the director’s mother) barely hints at the true size and length of the investigation, and her script steps gingerly from one cliché to the next. Interesting story—but been here, seen this. J.L.

Nerve

A meek Staten Island teenager (Emma Roberts) impulsively joins an online game where players win cash for accepting dares; as the game progresses, the prizes get higher and the dares get more and more dangerous. Jessica Sharzer’s script (adapted from Jeanne Ryan’s novel) grows necessarily more far-fetched by the minute, eventually climaxing in a lecture on the dangers of peer pressure that practically flashes “Author’s Message.”

But directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman set a lively, suspenseful pace, aided by Madeleine Gavin and Jeff McEvoy’s razor-sharp editing. The movie’s not-so-secret weapon is

the sympathetic Roberts and her chemistry with costar Dave Franco as a fellow player.

Emily Meade adds surprising depth to her role as Roberts’ BFF; other supports are good but tend to blur together. J.L.

Our Kind of Traitor

While vacationing in Morocco, a British university lecturer (Ewan McGregor) is befriended by a money launderer for the Russian Mafia who wants to defect (Stellan Skarsgård); reluctantly, the lecturer and his wife (Naomie Harris) are recruited to act as go-betweens for the Russian and an agent for British Intelligence (Damian Lewis). Adapted by Hossein Amini from the novel by John le Carré, the movie follows the same old line le Carré has been peddling for 50 years: The bad guys will always win, and the little guy will be lucky to escape with his life. Still, within that standard formula it’s expertly made—well-acted by all, with director Susanna White ratcheting up the suspense with a sure Hitchcockian hand.

The Secret Life of Pets

A loyal and affectionate dog (voiced by Louis C.K.) finds his universe turned upside-down when his human brings home a pound rescue (Eric Stonestreet) whom he instantly dislikes. Once again, what might have made a perfectly enjoyable seven-minute cartoon is padded out far beyond the limits of its paper-thin story, this time by writers Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio and Brian Lynch, and directors Yarrow Cheney and Chris Renaud. Moments of clever humor here and there become swamped in frenetic, extended action scenes and eruptions of genuine unpleasantness (typified by a demented human-hating rabbit played by Kevin Hart). Characters and their celebrity voices are too numerous and fleeting to register strongly; two standout exceptions are Jenny Slate as a sweetly fuzzy lapdog and Albert Brooks as a predatory hawk. The cathartic sort of lost, of course.

Every third Thursday of the month, the Crocker offers an evening of artistic respite through two means: wandering forever through the museum’s breathtaking gallery maze, or drifting along to daydreams accompanied by a breezy jazz score in the open air.

Last Thursday’s bill presented two talented ensembles: Sacramento’s own the Bumptet and Bay Area saxophonist Greg Chambers with a full backing band. Both instrumental acts wedged two sets between one another, with the Bumptet jamming in the front courtyard outside the cafe and Chambers performing on the main stage in a courtyard further back.

The Bumptet introduced itself with a jazz epic, guiding us through an abridged sonic tour of the universe

that lasted shy of 20 minutes, or close to half of its first set. The song wove together tightly with well-versed hooks, then derailed boldly into improv chaos. The intergalactic tone was in part due to Andre Fylling’s keyboardist-from-Mars sound, his electric organ eerily shifting pitches like a weeping UFO in certain moments.

The four men conjured a range of vibes: upbeat and skippy; mellow and reclined; down-to-earth and transdimensional.

Chambers and friends’ set felt jubilant and celebratory, convincing some folks planted in their folding chairs to rise up and jig a little. The sax lead the way, with Chambers breathing cheerful melodies that resonated well through the night and the ride home.

Those brass hooks wore a brim backing sound, a parade of clicky slap bass, warm electric wah and lullaby-soft keys elevated by up-tempo percussion.

Intermissions were meant for roaming the Crocker’s boundless art spaces. If you’re seeking fresh exhibits, Glass for the New Millennium just opened up on the third floor, a globally curated set of 3-D sculptures pristinely crafted with vibrant colored shards.

Considering the normal price to experience the Crocker’s vast art assemblage is $10, $14 isn’t bad for the additional access to the curative magic of live music. Jazz night returns in August. Ready to get lost?

Community on the airwaves: Since 1967, free-form community radio has thrived in Davis thanks to UC Davis station KDVS. Tune into 90.3 FM and you might hear thrash metal, blues, ‘60s Cambodian pop, poetry or musings on current affairs. But what about Sacramento?

KUTZ FM wants to be the KDVS for Sacramento, and fittingly, the effort

is led by a group of KDVS alumni.

For the past two years, the project has been in the works, gaining momentum slowly. Now, KUTZ FM has a frequency—106.9 FM—and is actively fundraising to hopefully launch this fall. Find the crowdfunding campaign at www.indiegogo.com/projects/ kutz-radio-launch. Donations are tax deductible.

Anneliese Kaufman, one of the station’s core volunteers, says KUTZ FM will dive into local culture, including food commentary and Sacramento Kings coverage.

“A lot of it is highlighting local artists, musicians, events—and reflecting a lot of the great things happening in Sacramento,” she said.

And music, obviously.

“With radio, we’re noticing a generation gap with music programming. KUTZ will reflect younger musicians making music now. …

Noise, punk, whatever deejays want to play.”

Hopefully, one day, KUTZ will invite live bands or record sessions in its studio, which Kaufman is aiming to be located downtown. It all depends on what the engineers determine is best, and of course, money. Though the KUTZ crowdfunding campaign technically concludes on August 31, KUTZ won’t be able to broadcast until it reaches its $7,500 goal—the minimum

needed for basic equipment, Kaufman says.

Since it’s a community-oriented station—a completely volunteer-run, non-profit supported directly by donations from the community it serves—there’s plenty of room for folks to get involved. When the album Handsworth Revolution was released in the late ’70s, the roots reggae trio Steel Pulse ROOTS REGGAE expressed the plight of urban black youth in England through songs like “Ku Klux Klan” and “Soldiers.” The lyrics painted a grim and honest image of racial tensions. Steel Pulse quickly aligned with the Rock Against Racism organization in its early career and toured with bands in the punk movement like the Stranglers, XTC, the Clash and the Police. Today, David Hinds (vocals, guitar) is the only original founding member touring with the band, but longtime members are currently by his side.

Let’s pretend that you had sex with a guy you really liked, and the sex was awful. Like, so bad you just didn’t want to ever slip between the sheets with him again. Or maybe the sex was OK but he said something that branded itself into your mind, scorching every other good thing about him. Maybe you even had a few of these kinds of hookups, and none ripened into the love you desire. In the meantime, people start gossiping about you being a heartbreaker and warning everyone away from hanging with you. Or maybe you inflated your sexual experiences hoping to impress your friend group. Get the picture? The man you’re interested in might be a good guy. Or he might just want to hit it and quit it. Then again, he could be uneducated about relationships, and confused enough to mistake sex for love.

The only way to know if this man has been misunderstood or if he deserves his rep is to ask him. Do you have the courage to do that? If not, you may not be ready for a romantic relationship. Self-love requires that you ask the hard questions about love, and pay attention to your internal response as the answer is given. So tell him you want a committed relationship, and ask if he’s interested in hanging out with

you exclusively. Tell him you don’t tolerate being played, and wouldn’t wish that pain on anyone. Listen carefully for his answer. If he can’t look you in the eye and say he’s all in, drop him. If he says he’s not sure because he’s still getting to know you, notice what arises in you. He’s given you an honest answer, but you might worry about how to manipulate him into choosing you. Or you might want his arms around you. You might have a gazillion other emotions or thoughts.

Allow peace to settle into your bones as you realize you don’t need to force anything to happen. Just make smart choices. Like this: Take care of yourself. One of the biggest mistakes people make while dating is to give their heart completely to someone who is not ready to care for it. So share your heart but don’t surrender it until your partner is ready and says so. Remember, love is always a risk. Always. But it’s also a risk worth taking, if you grow wiser and more loving along the way.

No dank, no dosh I am a 37-year-old mom that suffers from bipolar and major depressive disorder. I am on prescription meds but they don’t always work. Sometimes the only thing that will pull me out of a deep, suicidal depression is smoking a pure sativa strain of medical marijuana. I have my recommendation from a doctor and am able to obtain it from dispensaries. However, I live in Rancho Cordova and have realized there are zero dispensaries to be found in my city. City council has deemed that medical marijuana dispensaries are “a public nuisance in that many violent crimes have been committed that can be traced back to the proliferation of marijuana dispensaries, including armed robberies and murders.”

I did some minor fact checking and found that this simply is not true. … Are you able to steer me in the right direction of whom to talk to or how to go about getting a city council to change an ordinance?

—Blue Jay Sorry for cutting out a few parts of your 600-word email. You made some very valid points about cannabis clubs being safe and cool and clean and awesome. However, please don’t expect reasoned and well-thought-out arguments to win the day. Most elected officials, like the good people of the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors and especially the ones in Rancho, are unable to listen to reason when it comes to matters of the cannabis plant. We tried using common sense and valid, reasoned arguments years ago and they listened politely, agreed with us and then banned clubs anyway. Sigh.

Like you pointed out in your letter, there are studies showing that crime rates go down in areas that have cannabis dispensaries. As to how you can get your board of supes on the cannabis bandwagon: Good luck. You may need an entirely new city council.

lot of medical cannabis edibles and beverages are targeted toward the snacks and sweets corner of the market, but there are also plenty of options for patients who prefer to wake and bake.

One of the most varied lines of medicated morning beverages comes from Jane’s Brew, a company that excels not just at creating consistent and delicious products, but also at discreetly packaging them to look like goods bought at a grocery store rather than a dispensary.

Jane’s Brew makes cannabis-infused teabags, iced teas, hot chocolates, Boost powders, instant coffees and even Keurig pods. Their “triple lab tested and certified” chamomile tea (priced around $5.50) looks like it was bought at Raley’s or Safeway, and it’s prepared the same way as any other instant hot tea. Cannabis is fat-soluble but not water-soluble, and since the good stuff tends to settle on the bottom, you will need to stir

often to get a full and even effect. There’s a hint of dankness in the aroma, but otherwise it smells and tastes like weak tea, albeit with a payload of 20 mg of THC.

Summer scoop It’s something we’ve all—at one time or another—screamed for. And with as hot as Sacramento summers can get, sometimes you need to chill out and cool down. To do just that, SN&R caught up with Ronald Sanchez Jr., owner of Mr. Sancho’s Ice Cream, a local ice cream truck. We chatted about everything from the most popular ice cream flavors, car shows, how to keep ice cream cold and why insanely hot weather isn’t actually the most popular time for ice cream.

How long has Mr. Sancho’s Ice Cream been around?

Mr. Sancho’s Ice Cream has been in business now for six years.

Do you do shows and events yearround, or is it just during the summer months?

Yeah, we just do stuff during the summer months. Our business will start up probably the end of March, and we’ll go until like the end of October. So we do shut down for a few months, probably like five months.

That’s more of a seasonal thing, and majority of our business is car shows or music festivals or something along those lines.

If it’s hotter out, do people buy more ice cream?

at car shows and festivals and I figured this would be a good way to still attend them, spend the day and make a living, or partial living, off the ice cream truck business.

Are you a big car show fan?

Yes, I am. We have a few cars that we show. So we’re at car shows all day long.

And that’s how we came up with the idea.

What type of classic cars are you into?

I have a 1962 Chevy Impala that I keep, it’s just all original. And then my daughter does the muscles cars. She’s into Chargers. So we rep both of those cars, take them both to shows. We’re into muscles cars and we’re into classic cars.

What’s the process like for opening a truck?

The first thing you need to do is find your truck. Then you have to go to the county of Sacramento—that’s where I live, so I go through the county of Sacramento—and I have to meet all their regulations and guidelines on the truck. Dimensions. The height. My equipment that’s located in the truck. All the safety aspects of the truck have to be met through Sacramento County. And once they approve my truck then they issue us a yearly sticker which gives us the opportunity to sell ice cream.

I think it’s opposite. When it’s too hot, I don’t think people buy as much ice cream.

So it’s kind of weird. It’s just, to me, it’s opposite. When it’s really hot, not too many people buy ice cream. But when it’s, you know, regular to a little bit colder, ice cream does good then.

What’s your most popular flavor?

What made you decide to open an ice cream truck?

I came up with the process in my head of what I want the ice cream truck to look like. I went to another friend of mine who designs wraps and I kind of told him what

You know, of course, we have a cookies and cream inside of a cup and that’s like our best seller all the time, like, all year long.

Who did the design and decoration for your truck?

I wanted, and he came up with the design.

Then another buddy of mine installed the wrap onto the vehicle.

With the truck, how do you keep the ice cream cold?

We have a freezer inside the ice cream truck. And I have—it’s called an inverter—which, when the truck’s running, it keeps the freezer going. And it’s just a commercial ice cream freezer. And like I said, when the truck’s running, the inverter keeps it [charged]. But if we’re at an event, the truck’s off for like eight to 10 hours, then I have a generator that I would run next to the truck which will keep the freezer going.

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

My favorite flavor would have to be strawberry shortcake.

Do you just have the one truck?

We have one truck. But we also have another business that goes with it, it’s called Mr. Sahcho’s and More. And basically that’s a 10-by-10 tent, like a food tent.

We specialize in lemonade, soda, water, nachos, that type of stuff comes out of there. So they actually butt up together. I’ll have the truck and I’ll have the tent, and it’s, it’s run by all family. It’s run by wife, my kids and my niece. Those are the main workers, you know, and we go to events and we set up the truck and we set up the tent and like I said, it’s a family business and that’s kind of what we do. Ω
