This weekend, Sacramentans will have the chance to enjoy Second Saturday, with venues showcasing a wealth of talented artists.

Many of the places, however, are located in Midtown and surrounding neighborhoods, leaving the impression that the rest of the city doesn’t have much to offer.

That topic and others were addressed at a June 29 panel discussion, “The State of the Arts: What Will it Take to Make Sacramento’s Art Scene Great?”

Hosted by California Groundbreakers, a panel of artists, gallery owners and other supporters talked funding, space and promotion. Seumas Coutts, co-founder of M5 Arts, the group behind Art Hotel, said Sacramento is in a unique position. With generous arts funding, we could be the next Berlin, he said, noting both cities boast copious space and cheap rents.

Cool, but is Berlin the right goal?

Sacramento is one of the nation’s most diverse cities. I thought of this as Brickhouse Gallery curator Barbara Range raised a question.

How do we promote artists and galleries beyond the grid, she asked.

How do we support scenes in south Sacramento and Del Paso Heights, for example?

It’s an important point.

Sacramento shouldn’t emulate Berlin—or any other city. Instead, we must focus on what makes us unique.

That means looking beyond the grid to to invest time, energy, space and money in more neighborhoods. That means seeking out, supporting and promoting diverse artists across a spectrum of ethnicities and financial backgrounds.

That investment falls on all of us, including SN&R. We’ll aim to do better.

Nothing but love The rest of the story Re “New racism, same as the old?” by Jeff vonKaenel (SN&R Greenlight, June 30): Unfortunately, my father too was arrested and interned during World War II, as were thousands of other German-Americans. As a family, we ended up interned at both Ellis Island, New York and at Crystal City, Texas. And all Americans should know the rest of the internment story, e.g. American-born children were sent to Germany under siege where they were exchanged with our enemy. More than 300,000 German permanent-resident aliens were labeled as “alien enemies” who were forbidden to fly, forbidden to possess firearms and cameras and were required to carry identification cards labeling them as “alien enemies.”

In addition, they were forbidden to leave their neighborhoods. Many German-Americans were forced to leave their residences because they resided in a designated war zone, and many were denaturalized and deported.

We must persevere as Sacramento and not begin pointing fingers and making accusations of who is not supporting the LGBT community. In that, my partner Beth and I have been going to 58 Degrees for many, many years. We don’t want to go to gay bars, but rather, in our age, as wine enthusiasts, we want to go somewhere safe and comfortable. 58 and their staff, many of them who are gay, have been nothing but wonderful people. 58 Degrees is our safe haven. No one bothers us. The staff are nothing but loving and supportive.

When we married in Seattle, we arrived at 58 and there on the table was a bottle of champagne and celebration, with a card signed by all the staff. I don’t know what the motivation is behind negative stories around 58. I define all of what I do by asking for your proof. Our proof is that at 58, we find love and support. Always. We need to stop jumping to conclusions during this very sad time and know that there really are lots of straight and gay businesses who love us.

A toxic history The Sacramento region’s minority communities face a legacy of environmental injustice

George Sim Park is like an oasis for the Avondale Glen Elder neighborhood in southeast Sacramento. On an early summer evening, the park abounds with kids braving the heat to practice for the Junior Giants baseball program. The smell of marijuana also drifts from the parking lot. One parent, Georgi Gill, takes note of the smoke.

“They aren’t supposed to do that here,” she said.

The park and the working-class community that surrounds it have seen their share of troubles, but also have people fighting for them.

The neighborhood is a prime spot for illegal dumping. It’s been impossible to get a grocery store built here. And the Sacramento Regional Transit District only recently restored bus service to this remote community, but only on a semiregular basis.

The most jarring thing to know about neighborhoods like Avondale Glen Elder is that they are this way by design—and that living in them can shave years off the lives of their residents.

As an October 2015 environmental justice report by the Center for Regional Change at UC Davis illustrated, minorities were pushed to outer neighborhoods

like Oak Park, Del Paso Heights and south Sacramento during the 20th century through discriminatory land-use policies like racial covenants in housing deeds, which explicitly blocked properties from being sold to AfricanAmericans, and “redlining,” which refers to the federal government’s denial of mortgages based on race and ethnicity.

A concept that has become known as “environmental injustice” soon flourished.

The term refers to the idea that lowincome neighborhoods and communities of color are saturated with environmental hazards and “systematically excluded

from decision-making that could prevent or mitigate their effects,” Jonathan London, director of the UC Davis Center for Regional Change, wrote in a March 6 op-ed for the Davis Enterprise.

The UC Davis report, which a research team developed over three years, is the first attempt at quantifying the hidden dangers facing disadvantaged communities in the six-county Sacramento region, in the hopes of finally spurring some change.

It represents a legacy of injustice that’s hidden in plain sight.

“In Sacramento, we’ve never really owned that narrative,” said Katie Valenzuela Garcia, who contributed to the report and serves on the Environmental Justice Advisory Committee for the California Air Resource Board.

Like other ignored neighborhoods in the region, the Avondale community has lived this reality for decades. Some of its residents say they are working to change the narrative—and they may have an outside shot at doing so—but can they reverse the tide of history?

online Vigilantism located near the city dump, the neighborhood is a popular dumping ground for everything from old lawnmowers to couches to bedroom sets.

“It’s your random, garden variety of useless stuff,” Gill said.

Then there’s the neighborhood’s ongoing challenge with transportation.

Burrowed south of Power Inn Road, it’s miles from a freeway in any direction, requiring a long trek over city streets, adding to neighborhood traffic and pollution. RT has a light-rail station at Power Inn Road, though it’s drastically cut bus service in this area since the economic downturn, including eliminating one of the area’s only bus routes, Route 8, in 2010.

RT finally reinstated the route, renaming it Route 65, in September, after years of agitating by people like Michelle Pariset of Capital Region Organizing Project. But service is still scarce: hourly, Monday through Friday, with no weekend service.

Gill has always had a car while living in Avondale Glen Elder, but says she’s seen how bus service reductions have affected her neighbors. “I know that it upended a lot of people’s lives out here,” she said.

Not having a car in outlying neighborhoods makes it difficult to do simple things like shop for healthy food. A lack of grocery stores is a common, chicken-andegg problem in lower income neighborhoods. Grocery chains sometimes won’t enter areas without desired income and population bases. Prospective residents, in turn, avoid areas without these stores.

Jermaine Gill, Georgi’s husband, has lobbied for years to get a grocery store built at a vacant lot at the corner of Power Inn and Elder Creek roads. But his efforts have been frustrated, he said, by the lot’s owner holding onto the land for a higher price.

The cumulative effects of a neighborhood’s “proximity to significant environmental hazards and a lack of environmental amenities,” as the UC Davis report put it, can be life-threatening, say those who contributed to it.

Last month’s violent Capitol clash between white nationalists and anti-fascists has spilled onto social media, where both groups are stoking hostility with the online dissemination of personal information and, in some cases, evocating mass shootings.

Ever since the June 26 mass-casualty event left 10 people injured and no one in custody, members of both groups have engaged in competing “doxing” campaigns—posting and sharing personally identifiable information about the individuals they hold responsible.

The Traditionalist Workers Party, which advocates strict racial segregation, had obtained a permit to host a rally on the state Capitol’s west side beginning around noon that Sunday.

Violence erupted when those assembled for the rally were confronted by a large group of protesters. The event quickly devolved into a roving series of uninterrupted brawls that caught officers flat-footed and left five people stabbed.

At least two rally attendees from opposite sides have had their employers contacted, including Berkeley elementary school teacher Yvette Felarca, an organizer with the activist group By Any Means Necessary, which fought with the TWP supporters. One day after a bandaged Felarca appeared on TV and claimed victory for shutting down the rally, the school at which she works arranged additional security because of an anonymous email threatening students if she wasn’t terminated.

Meanwhile, protesters believe they identified one of the stabbing suspects by matching an image taken at the rally to a Facebook profile of a self-described skinhead, and encouraged each other to call the Facebook user’s union to demand his firing. The union set up a recorded message saying it does not condone discrimination or violence.

The two agencies responsible for providing security at the rally are sifting through a large amount of digital evidence already, officials said.

Sacramento police are investigating three separate assaults that occurred off Capitol grounds and in their jurisdiction on June 26, said department spokesman Officer Matt McPhail. Two of the victims were engaged in the rally or counterdemonstration, McPhail said. The third victim was a reporter covering the rally, McPhail said.

Of the three victims, McPhail said only the reporter was cooperating with police.

Police have identified persons who may have been responsible for one or more of the assaults, McPhail said, but he cautioned against expecting an immediate resolution to an event that attracted widespread coverage and criticism about the role that law enforcement did or didn’t play in preventing and responding to the violence. “I know people are interested in seeing some closure. What I would say is be curious, but be patient,” he said. “Within the legal process, you only get one shot.” (Raheem F. Hosseini)

What the duCk Renovations could soon begin at two murky city ponds that have long attracted community concern. As for the fledgling waterfowl that call the funky waters their home, that’s a trickier story.

Judy McClaver has been pressing the city to delay its renovation project, which would require draining the ponds, until September, when she says any baby goslings hatched during the current breeding season will have completed their molt and begun to fly.

“These birds need this pond for survival,” she told SN&R. “ In a media release, the city of Sacramento said its consulting biologist advised delaying the renovations at both McKinley and Land Park ponds until the breeding season was completed. (Corey Rodda)

I am so conflicted.

I was at the state Capitol on June 26 when a scheduled rally was canceled after chaos erupted between white power groups and anti-fascists. I arrived after most of the violence was over—but I did see two skinheads get attacked by a throng of anti-fascists.

Is it possible to be uplifted and dismayed at the same time?

Unlike others, however, my problem isn’t with the violence.

From the beginning this event seemed more like an old-fashioned “rumble” from the ’50s than a protest rally: The fascists post pics of themselves all dressed up like neo-Nazi LARPers, and then set a date for conflict. Then, Antifa heeds the call and rallies the troops who arrive gussied up in their glorious Occupy Punk Rock regalia, and the two groups go at it like cast members in a dystopian West Side Story.

Yes, 10 people were hurt, but those who willingly showed up to have a brawl in the street knew they were taking their chances.

Still, I am having a problem balancing my desire to accommodate free speech, no matter how detestable, with my desire to eradicate domestic terrorism in the United States.

Let’s be clear. Skinheads, neo-Nazis and groups that share their philosophies are terrorists. Full stop. These radicalized individuals have been responsible for lynchings, murders, bombings and attacks against U.S. citizens for decades. And before you start with the whole “You have to let them speak because of the First Amendment!” stuff, no. I don’t have to let them say a word. The state does. The First Amendment says that the government has to let fascists speak, which is why racist skinheads were granted a permit for a hate rally.

However, “freedom of speech” doesn’t mean “freedom from consequences.” People get fired from jobs for saying stupid, racist things all the time. Don’t forget: The law also declares that some forms of speech can be considered “fighting words.” If you openly and loudly advocate for someone’s destruction and threaten their lives, and the people you threatened show up and kick your ass, that’s on you.

Antifa running neo-Nazis off the block isn’t a violation of First Amendment rights; it’s a group of private citizens standing up for themselves. No one is forcing these hate-filled racists to stand on the steps of the Capitol to advocate oppression and genocide.

But still, it pains me. I am generally down to listen to all forms of ridiculous asshattery. I do believe that people should be allowed to spew whatever poisonous venom is in their hearts, if only so I know who to avoid. However, the nomination of Donald Trump has lead me to believe that fascist racists cannot be allowed to their views are becoming popular or more accepted. Ω

“If we build it, they will come.” It’s a common refrain—but the Sacramento LGBT Community Center has a different problem. They are here and now we need to build it. “They” are the large number of homeless LGBT youth, seniors, HIV positive individuals and veterans needing services and support, who are overwhelming the center’s current location.

The center is now in a large Victorian home at the corner of 20th and L streets. It was adequate at one time. Before gay marriage, before “don’t ask, don’t tell,” before gay pride events, before anti-discrimination laws.

And before LGBT culture became so much more publicly accepted and even celebrated.

But, just as the election of an African-American president did not end racism here, neither did Supreme Court rulings or sit-ins end LGBT discrimination. Certainly recent events in Orlando and North Carolina make that painfully obvious.

At a recent Sacramento LGBT Community Center fundraising event, former California Assembly member and longtime Sacramento mover and shaker Dennis Mangers spoke about the need for a larger facility. Mangers reminded us how much had changed since the center was first opened in 1986. He reminded us of the time when admitting that you were gay could destroy your political career, your employment, your family, your friendships and even your physical safety. But the center’s message was to come out and be brave, and he applauded the center’s achievement of creating an environment where people of all ages can come out and feel safe.

At the fundraising event, a young 16-year-old man spoke about how the center has helped him with emotional resources and, speaking with obvious glee, it was also a place to find a

boyfriend. His supporting and loving mother was in the audience.

Other LGBT youth are not as fortunate. The center cannot provide for everyone in need. Often, they are then left out in the street, in harm’s way without support.

That is why the Sacramento LGBT Center Board wants to build a new facility. The first goal is to raise $250,000.

Executive Director Donald Bentz expects the center would be between 7,000 and 10,000 square feet and cost between $3.5 million to $6 million.

Obviously, this would be much larger than their current 3,000-square-foot location. They hope to remain in Midtown’s Lavender Heights district.

“As the climate becomes more nurturing to identifying as LGBT, more people are coming out and the local center is often the first place they turn to for help,” Bentz says. “As our community grows, so must our center, which is already insufficient in space.

Support groups spill into hallways. … New groups cannot start because there are days when every room in the center is in use. With more space, we could not only serve more people, but offer more quality, variety and innovation in our programs to really make a difference in the lives of LGBT people and their families.”

Sacramento is blessed to have a vibrant, active and engaged LGBT community. It is time to a build a center that reflects our community, and that can provide protection, support and love for our brothers and sisters in need.

They are here. Let us build the building. Ω

How Sammy Diaz’s rogue rafting party pits park rangers against a band of wild, drunken river goers

Sammy Diaz can fly.

At least that’s how it looks to Rafting Gone Wild revelers on a recent Saturday afternoon as they watch the event’s organizer spring from the Sunrise Avenue footbridge out over the American River.

Wiry and tan, the 23-year-old spreads his arms and does a half-turn in the air.

He faces the Sacramento County park rangers on the bridge who, moments before, tried to stop him on suspicion of putting on this gathering of some 3,000 rafters without a permit.

Diaz has been here before, of course.

He remembers last year’s Rafting Gone Wild all too well, a day that culminated

That’s not going to happen today.

Not if Diaz can help it. Now, his descent toward the American River accelerates.

The rangers watch—dumbfounded, impotent—as the audacious young outlaw soars beyond their reach. Diaz disappears into the river’s depths, resurfacing with an arm to the sky. He floats away from the humiliated park rangers to the hoots and cheers of his people, the rafters and troublemakers and joy-seekers at the river’s launch site.

Diaz is facing three charges by this point in the day: Organizing an unpermitted event, running from the rangers and jumping off the bridge. A rangers’ motorboat is making its way upstream to nab Diaz, so he’ll have to swim to shore soon and hide. But that doesn’t matter. He’s in his element on this river.

“It just felt like freedom,” Diaz says after reuniting with his rafting crew an hour later. “That’s all.”

Attracting thousands of partygoers annually, the Rafting Gone Wild bash has been a stressor on the Sacramento County Parks Department for years, forcing rangers to beef up staffing in anticipation for increased rescues, fights, public intoxication and litter. Each year, rangers declare

emergency alcohol bans on the river to quiet the festivities. But they are fast learning that rafters will not back down without a fight for their right to party.

“They call this a ‘nanny state,’” says Diaz. “We don’t need someone to tell us how to be safe.”

Diaz isn’t the event’s founder—those details are murky—but he took on admin responsibilities on the Rafting Gone Wild Facebook group last year and is now considered its de facto organizer.

Now, with Diaz’s daring escape and the rafters planning their second of three river celebrations this summer, one wonders if things between rangers and ragers will get worse before they get better.

RiveR’s edge At first glance, they may look a bit ragtag and rough, with their neck tattoos, dreadlocks, Hawaiian shirts, leis, flat-brimmed baseball caps and gauged piercings. But Diaz’s rafting party of 16 is at once welcoming and gregarious.

A TV station interviews Diaz in a parking lot before the June 25 Rafting Gone Wild expedition. His friends flit around in the background, all smiles, punctuating his responses with affirmations: “Amen!” “Just having fun and enjoying life!”

“I’m not worried about the alcohol ban,” Diaz tells the reporter. “A majority of us have been to jail,” he quips.

It’s funny because it’s true.

As the crew collects its rafts and prepares for the march down to the river’s launch, a young man with neatly combed hair and black-rimmed prescription glasses turns to Diaz’s mom, Robin Romero.

“Hey, tell me if any cops come by here,” he says.

“Why?” asks Romero, 50.

“Warrants.”

“Oh.” This band of Rancho Cordova natives looks forward to the celebration each year as one of the few times they get to leave behind their daily responsibilities—bills, kids, jobs at Wal-Mart and Burger King—and create another round of memories on the river that served as their backyard in childhood.

“We grew up there,” says rafter and longtime friend Eric Ward. Diaz’s family took him in when the two were just boys. They’ve been jumping off the footbridge since they were 14.

To this group, Rafting Gone Wild is as much about bringing people together as it is a celebration of the Rancho Cordova river culture. But as the celebration rises in popularity, staffers at Sacramento County Parks feel the pressure.

“I wish people would recognize that our intent is public safety and nothing more,” says head park ranger Michael Doane.

Sacramento’s rivers are no joke.

Thirteen people drowned in them in 2015, according to officials, including one woman at another party-friendly event, Rage on the River.

To Doane and his colleagues, the swell of partiers and their hankering for booze is a recipe for disaster.

“Because of the participants and their focus on alcohol, it’s not an event I look forward to,” he says.

This year’s celebration drew higher crowds than the June 2015 launch. If Doane had to estimate, he’d say it was well into the 2,000-to-3,000 range.

Rafting Gone Wild 2016 resulted in six arrests, including one outstanding warrant, three public intoxication violations and one drunken driving incident in which the person drove over barriers and onto a bike path near the rafters’ landing point. Last year, there were just four arrests—two over a stolen golf cart.

On top of that, the parks rangers’ boat picked up maybe a dozen stranded rafters this year, and medical aid calls were up from 2015. There were also two calls for unconscious people in the park needing to go to the hospital, Doane says, as well as two rafters going in for head injuries suffered during a fight.

But neither this year nor last held a candle to 2012’s Rafting Gone Wild, which resulted in 23 arrests and more than 100 rescue assists. That marked the end of alcohol on the river for large-scale unpermitted events. And the beginning of the rift between rangers and revelers.

“We’ve already got 60 beers on the river,” Diaz says at the Sunrise Avenue raft launch just 10 minutes before his daring escape from park rangers. The night before, someone had planted two black backpacks full of beer along the bank downstream for the group to retrieve away from county officials’ prying eyes.

Rafting Gone Wild was founded as a drinking celebration in 2011 in response to the county’s decision to ban alcohol in parks on the summer’s three major holiday weekends—Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. That all came to a head when the RGW celebration got a little too wild in 2012.

County supervisors upped the ante by passing a law allowing single-day emergency alcohol bans on the river.

Parks have enacted them for every Rafting Gone Wild since.

To enforce the ban, rangers post up at popular launches, where they ask to go through rafters’ belongings. They

also patrol the shores of popular hangouts like the Clay Banks and Gilligan’s Island on foot, and use a riverboat to patrol the waters in search of rafters getting drunk.

For their part, Rafting Gone Wilders turn the ban into a game, deliberately disobeying rangers by finding ways to smuggle booze onto their vessels. It’s impish, irreverent. It sends a message of defiance to authorities.

Some rafters fill water bottles with clear booze. Others have alcohol delivered along the way by friends on foot. A brave minority cites its Fourth Amendment right against illegal

Today, the group passes the checkpoint with a little bit of everything: water bottles filled with vodka, beers smuggled under personal belongings, enough weed to last the day and, of course, the scheduled pickup of those 60 cans downriver.

“Even though we try to keep most of it out, people sneak [alcohol] in,” says Doane. “So we just try and do the best that we can.”

Even so, Doane says it makes a difference. “It helps mitigate resource demand by banning alcohol, or at least reducing calls for services that are alcohol-related.”

Doane says many non-RGW rivergoers agree with the alcohol ban, since

Enjoying their first drinks and tokes of the day, Diaz’s friends and family drift along, keeping an eye out for him as well. One friend unties his raft and floats off to find the beers hidden along the shore.

“He’s him,” says Robin Romero of her son. “I can’t stop him from being him.”

Reaching the Clay Banks about 40 minutes downriver, the group waits for Diaz to join them. They know he’s safe and on his way. After his diving escape, Diaz spent 30 minutes hidden in the brush before finding a park visitor and using his cell phone to call his crew.

As Diaz’s party awaits his return, a blonde woman in a pod floating past recognizes the group and calls out, “I

Moments later, Clark spots Diaz with an incoming rafting party. He stands, waves to his family and friends and dives into the river to more cheers. Clark rushes to meet him. Now on land, Diaz is shivering cold. He’s shirtless, baring a chest tattoo of a Tupac lyric: “I’d rather die like a man than live like a coward.”

He scans the bike trail above, looking for patrolling park rangers. The group takes care to disguise Diaz, handing him a black baseball cap, a new pair of shorts and, for good measure, a cupful of vodka-soaked gummy bears.

The rafting party is in high spirits now, cracking beers as they return to the cool, swift river. They splash, laugh and play with a small megaphone, leading chants of “Fuck the park rangers!” with partiers along the banks. What a day to be free. What a time to be alive.

Doane says that this year’s staff was surprised by a surge in anti-ranger sentiment. “The crowd appeared more adversarial,” he says. “That kind of atmosphere sort of breeds on itself.”

He hopes it’s not a trend, but Doane says he’s beginning to notice on social media and the news that when folks are being lawfully detained by law enforcement, then subsequently escape, people cheer them on.

There’s something to it, this celebration of the good ol’ boy on the run: Diaz shouldn’t be on this raft with his 16 best friends and family members. This barefoot rogue should be in jail.

Yet here he is, showered with the laughter of family and friends, fat blunts, smuggled beers and irreverent cries against paternalistic rangers. It’s a storyline that resonates with most of the celebration’s blue-collar attendees, thirsty for just one day to go wild, to be free.

After the Clay Banks, rafters encounter the course’s one stretch of rapids before the river takes a hard left turn. This spot has an eddy that threatens to pull rafters out of the current and pin them against the banks.

It also, unfortunately, paints a picture of how much trash partygoers are really creating: popped rafts, crushed cans and empty bags of chips collect and congeal at the eddy’s edges. And that’s just what’s on the surface.

“When these big events occur, it definitely increases the amount of trash on the parkway,” says Chris Aguirre, development director of the American River Parkway Foundation.

On this day, members of Diaz’s party seem to do their part to clean up after themselves. Ward swims out on more than one occasion to grab empty cans discarded by other groups. When the crew sees some graffiti on the shore, Ward grabs his megaphone and reads the message aloud to nearby partiers: “‘Trash your liver, not the river!’”

“It’s not really a matter of education.

It’s attitudes,” says Doane. He doesn’t see the use in talking to Rafting Gone Wilders about littering. “This particular group of participants, it was more about a lack of cooperation.”

For all the differences between rangers and the event’s promoters, they do agree on one thing: Shut Gilligan’s Island down. It’s is the final stop for most RGW patrons before leaving the water. “I’m not the organizer of that shitshow,” Diaz says.

The group hits land about 100 yards north of Gilligan’s Island and turns its attention to a nearby rope swing that rangers had previously tried to cut. A group of resourceful young men are now rigging it back into service.

Downriver, Gilligan’s Island is barricaded by bright orange fencing. Doane considers this a successful strategy; Just one island fight will lead to a hospital visit that day.

Diaz approves. “If they just shut it down like they did today, and didn’t issue an alcohol ban, it’d be fine.”

There’s one more scare in store for Diaz today, and that’s when four Sacramento County park rangers walk

right past him on their way to cut the rope swing down again. This time it’s too close for comfort. The group piles back onto their rafts and drifts down to their secret exit point in Hagan Community Park.

In the days following Rafting Gone Wild, Sacramento media salivates over the high-profile footbridge escape. And Diaz revels in it.

He jokes with the morning hosts on 98 Rock, taunts the rangers on FOX40 and pleads his case on KCRA. He also promotes his next event.

In response to Doane’s criticism of the event’s name and what he calls its focus on alcohol, Diaz has rebranded Rafting Gone Wild on Facebook to the innocuous-to-the-point-of-dull The Rafting Community. As with any adept marketer, Diaz uses his 15 minutes of fame to promote the river’s next event: a Hawaiian-themed rafting celebration set for July 23 called Raftopia (™) Luau Float, 2016! To date, the Facebook event has more than 500 RSVPs. And, no, there are no plans to request an event permit.

Asked how he plans to address the upcoming celebration, Doane doesn’t show his hand: “We’re exploring our different options. I’m not going to expound on what our potential game plans might be at this point.”

But at the end of the day, Doane and his rangers want people out at the parks.

“I guess what I would like to convey is that it’s not an us-against-them type of situation,” he says. “We want people to have a good time out there, but we want them to do it responsibly.”

Aguirre agrees on this point: “We encourage folks to come out to the river and enjoy themselves, but we want to make sure people are safe out there and that they clean up their trash.”

Maybe that’s the starting point for conversation between rangers and revelers. When Diaz’s friends and family are asked what they love about these celebrations, they focus on community.

“We’re trying to promote having fun, being cool with everybody, making friends,” says Clark, his girlfriend.

“We don’t really get to do that a lot,” says Ward.

“Once we do get an organized family event, we have fun.”

Ward and Diaz both have 4-year-old sons. They expect them to go rafting together someday.

“I grew up on that river and I know everything about the river,” says Diaz.

Rangers be damned, he’ll keep partying on that river, too. Ω

I

t was 1998 and local pop punk trio the Secretions was playing a show at Rio Americano High School. Their set was cut short, however, after some jock kids started tossing rocks at them, demanding to hear NOFX instead. This caused bassist Mickie Rat to flip out and start yelling at them.

A school administrator quickly pulled the plug and told the band that the police had been called. They had 10 minutes to get off campus.

Later, the band found out from a friend that the school had added a clause to its contract for future bands: “None of the members of the band are members of or are affiliated with a band known as the Secretions.”

That was just one of roughly 800 shows the band has played in the past 25 years, but maybe the first time it inspired such a rule.

Of course, it may not be the last time. The Secretions celebrate the band’s 25th anniversary this Saturday at the Colonial Theatre. It’s been a long journey from the band’s rocky origins, which are rooted in tragedy. Throughout, they’ve managed to keep their fun, rebellious punk rock spirit firmly intact.

In the past quarter century, they’ve often been considered troublemakers. In fact, says drummer Danny Secretion, one Sacramento radio station in particular seemed to have it out for them with a deejay who repeatedly and gleefully referred to them as “Sacramento’s most offensive band.”

The band, whose members asked not to use their real names, perhaps for obvious reasons, says the reputation isn’t necessarily accurate or fair.

Sure, the band name might be a little offputting to some. And yes, songs like “Boner” and “Jerkin’ Off To You” are crude in nature— but labeling the group as shock-rockers entirely misses the point.

“I don’t think we’re that offensive. When I think of offensive, I think of the Dwarves,” says Secretion, referring to the legendary punk band 16 | SN&R | 07.07.16

that’s perhaps best known for its onstage sex antics, hardcore drug use and self-mutilation.

“Maybe our name is kind of gross [and] we say ‘fuck’ every now and again,” he adds. “[But] I think people realize when they meet us and hang out with us that we’re nice people.”

Some of the band’s seemingly offensive and snotty punk tunes have a point, even. One song, “Three Chords and a Fuck You”—which they consider their greatest achievement, by the way—touches on how the band’s members identify as geeks, freaks and weirdos, kids who grew up taking drama classes, playing

Cancer Society, Autism Speaks, the Zapatista Coalition of Sacramento and Food Not Bombs. Proceeds for their upcoming show at the Colonial Theatre will be donated to PB SOC, a group that advocates for pit bull socialization.

Such benefits are just one way the band asserts its independence and influence.

“I’ve always had a problem with authority, which is probably why I gravitated towards punk rock. I don’t want to tell anybody what to do or think. I can be an influence based on the choices I make with my band,” Rat says.

“no matter what era of the secretions you’re listening to, it sounds like a group of people trying to figure out what the hell they’re doing.”

Dungeons & Dragons or enduring life as the tallest kid in class who didn’t play sports.

More importantly, they all see their band as a safe haven for all the other freaks and geeks who are looking for a place to fit in.

“We always wanted to make it welcoming, not confrontational. You’re not going to get your ass kicked at a Secretions show. You’re going to laugh your ass off,” says Secretion.

The band gets serious, too. Over the years, the Secretions have staged myriad benefits for groups such as the American

This current version of the Secretions is something that’s evolved over time with plenty of hurdles along the way. Twenty-five years is a huge milestone for any band. For a small one like the Secretions, it might be even bigger since more is stacked against them.

“Most bands last 25 years because they have a recording contract and touring. They’re making a business out of it. We’re just losing money for 25 years,” Rat says.

by AAron CArnes And, they’ve stuck it out despite several lineup changes. The current lineup was locked into place about 10 years ago when Paul Filthy joined the band on the guitar.

Prior to Filthy joining, the band’s first 15 years were a time of upheaval. Rat and Secretion remained the only thread as they repeatedly adjusted to new members, which affected the overall sound and style. The unrest was fitting, perhaps, considering that the Secretions’ formation was largely shaped by tragedy.

The group formed in 1991 with Rat, drummer Dave Leon and guitarist D.J. Willis. Rat and Leon loved punk but couldn’t play instruments. In contrast, Willis was a guitar virtuoso but didn’t know much about punk. Willis taught the other guys how to play music and they taught him about the genre. The name Secretions was Willis’ idea. It was intended as a parody of ’50s doo-wop group names like the Temptations.

After just a few months, however, Willis was killed in a motorcycle accident. It was at Willis’ funeral, oddly enough, that Rat and Secretion first had a serious conversation about music. They knew each other superficially—they both worked at the same radio station at Sacramento State. During Rat’s speech at the funeral, to lighten the dark mood, he talked about the Secretions and even told the other mourners that the band was “looking for a new guitarist.”

Not surprisingly, the comment garnered plenty of uncomfortable laughter. Even as it struck some as inappropriate, the moment

intrigued Secretion. Soon, he was the band’s new guitarist.

Subsequently, when Leon quit in 1992, the next drummer couldn’t cut it. So Secretion, who’d barely played the instrument, decided he could do a better job.

He’s been there ever since.

The lineups changed every year or so—and the sound did, too. There was one period in the mid-’90s, for example, when the band played a more serious, angrier set that often got them lumped in with the local riot grrrl scene. By 1999, Rat and Secretion the primary songwriters, trading off on vocals equally.

Despite all the changes, there’s always been a constant.

“No matter what era of the Secretions you’re listening to, it sounds like a group of people trying to figure out what the hell they’re doing,” Secretion says.

Longtime Sacramento musician Kevin Seconds, who’s seen countless Secretions shows over the years, sees it this way.

“They rock and work their asses off and manage to still look and sound like they’re having a blast up there,” Seconds says.

In a way, Secretion and Rat are just as surprised as anyone that the band continues to thrive a quarter of a century later.

“I think that’s why we’re still doing stuff 25 years later, we never really planned things,” Secretion says. “I guess that leads us to not being disappointed with what happens.”

With the lineup solidified and the songwriting duties more consistently divided, Secretion and Rat have been at liberty to explore different topics: juvenile stuff, angry, political stuff and personal material. Mostly, however, they’ve allowed the content to evolve as they do.

Somehow, it all makes sense. A prime example is a new song about Secretion’s love for Home Depot that he’s writing for the band’s upcoming eighth album.

“I’m not going to write about how no one invited me to the homecoming dance.

I’m 46 years old. Home Depot matters to me now,” Secretion says. “There’s probably someone else at that stage of their life, that’s like, ‘yes, I get that.’” Ω

Those are just three of the printmaking methods that the three artists, Sandra Beard, Michelle Murillo and Carrie Ann Plank, employed in the making of their pieces for Shimo Center for the Arts’ show this month. n the brink of this city becoming a metropolis in possession of a bazillion-dollar arena and its very own mass-produced Jeff Koons sculpture, I ask its fair citizens to remember one thing: Don’t forget where you came from. Don’t forget that before we started making other cities jealous with our celebrity-studded Walk of Stars, we were (and still are) the lucky hosts of the California State Fair every year. Because aren’t we all, deep down, just a human person who is stoked to guzzle wine slushies and bet our paychecks on a racehorse whose name is a funny sexual innuendo?

All I ask is that we stay humble, friends, and keep in mind that you’re never too good to swap out your green juice for a deep-fried, bacon-wrapped Reese’s, because state-fair season is upon us from Friday, July 8, through Sunday, July 24, and as always, it is bringing the heat—literally, it is going to be hot AF—but also, fun, kitchsy-tothe-max delights abound: The big concerts this year include the Loverboy, Styx, Dwight yoakam and Creedence Clearwater Clearwater Revisted (which boasts the original rhythm section of CCR), but the lineup really shines when it comes to old-school R&B: tony! toni! toné!, Chaka kahn, tower of Power and the Pointer Sisters will all be playing. Timing is everything dessert pAirings, teMple CoFFee roAsters I often complain about the lack of late-night dessert options in Sacramento. That habit subsided, though, when the new Temple on K Street opened and debuted a dessert-and-beverage pairing menu. There’s usually some sort of cake, fruity tart and intense chocolate option, prepared by Pushkin’s Bakery or Sugar Mama’s Bakery. Sure, I could have picked up a luxuriously creamy, amazingly gluten-free lemon tart ($7) from Pushkin’s for slightly less money, but I could not have enjoyed it with Temple’s malty China breakfast tea ($3.05) at 10:30 p.m. on a Tuesday. And that pairing?

Calling all geeks

Comics, coffee and toast: Geeks, you’re getting your very own cafe.

That’s thanks to Laura Benson and Neil Estaris as well as Sacramento Downtown Partnership’s annual Calling All Dreamers competition, which wrapped up last week.

Entrepreneurs submit business plans, experts whittle down applicants to a few finalists, and then members of the public vote for what business they most want to see open downtown.

Benson and Estaris won with Oblivion Comics & Coffee, a cafe that will sell vintage and new comics while specifically catering to Sacramento’s thriving community of geeks. They’ll receive a startup package valued at

$110,000, including up to six months of free rent downtown.

“I never really have the urge to stay at comic book shops,” Estaris says. “[They’re] not catered to people who would want to stay and hang out, chat about movies or read.”

For that reason, Oblivion will be a card-free haven—think Magic: The Gathering—but Estaris expects to regularly host events and nights dedicated to playing other games.

All the while, folks can sip on beverages made with Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters beans in a designed space Estaris describes as “a representation of a pocket universe.”

There will also be artisanal toast, via the San Francisco-grown national trend. Oblivion is still working on securing a baker for the bread, which will be thickly sliced and toasted with a generous amount of butter and variations on a cinnamon-sugar topping. Since this is Sacramento, Oblivion probably won’t charge $4 for a slice, Estaris says.

Oblivion is actively negotiating for a lease on K Street and aiming to open by the end of 2016.

Put the Thai in the coconut: When the Coconut Midtown’s wait grows too long, fans of the restaurant now have another option. They can go to the Coconut on T (1110 T Street).

The new Coconut sits around the corner from South, occupying a section of downtown’s Southside Park neighborhood where the nearest Thai restaurants are on Broadway (Chada Thai Cuisine and Taste of Thai) or 16th Street (Orchid Thai Restaurant & Bar and Thai Canteen).

More importantly, the Coconut on T is way more spacious than the Coconut Midtown. Otherwise, the lowkey vibe and menu remain the same. Ω

It feels like you should order wine at a wine bar, but the Grand also does cocktails. Bar manager Jeremy Wuerch took them to a new level by introducing his homemade infused spirits. Among his creations: gingery whiskey, basil vodka and plum-infused whiskey.

The latter stars in the Smokey Fig ($10), which also features applewoodsmoked fig, cherry, two types of vermouth and bitters. Served on the rocks, the cherry and smokey notes pop while simultaneously achieving a balanced, not-too-fruity complexity. 1600 L Street, http://thegrandwinebar.com.

Berry confusing Hybrid berries If the country is a melting pot, our fruits have gone hog-wild. Apricots cross with plums (apriums, pluots) and oranges cross with lemons (Meyers). Berries have fun, too. Blackberries mix it up with raspberries to make loganberries, and then mix it up with dewberries to make youngberries. Then those offspring get together and make olallieberries! Confusing, yes, but all delicious. For any of them, you want springy fruits that don’t show signs of wilting or squashing.

Eat them as soon as possible, as they don’t hold long.

If you’re lucky enough to have a glut, make pie.

Life’s a peach Peach pie, peach hand pie, peach cobbler, peach ice cream, peach salsa, peach hot sauce, peach soup, peach juice, peach jam, peach ice pops— did I say peach pie already? Totally pawsome Cat GaMeS: MouSe hunt My cat Zoey is a huge fan of the Animal Planet show My Cat From Hell. Like, she’ll watch an entire hourlong episode just staring at the screen in wonder.

Kind of makes me feel like a bad kitty parent, but it also kind of makes me happy because that’s one hour she’s not meowing at me about WebsITe food, playtime or whatever else is on her bossy little mind. Now I have a new distraction for her by way of Cat Games: Mouse Hunt.

This one-hour YouTube clip from Gaming Palooza Empire is basically like Bugs and Toddlers, but for felines. Instructions are simple: “Place cat in front of the screen.” From there, your precious kitty can “chase” a virtual mouse as it darts around the computer or TV screen. Probably want to clear the immediate area for this one. Simone Zelitch’s new book, Judenstaat: A Novel (Tor Books, $25.99), takes the Philip K. Dick route: She imagines that, to punish the Nazis, a Jewish nation was created—but in Saxony instead of the book Middle East. Like The Man in the High Castle, there’s a search for the truth; young librarian Judit Klemmer, who is in charge of making a documentary for the country’s 40th anniversary. But her research leads her into a morass of conflict, as anti-Semites in neighboring Germany, Czechoslovakia and Poland vie with native Saxons who want their land back and radical “black-hat” fundamentalist Jews to see who can tear the country apart the fastest. That’s not to mention the suspicious death of Judit’s husband, adding a mystery on top of mysteries. A fascinating look at what never was, Judenstaat tells us a great deal about human nature and the persistence of bigotry.

You Goat Mail Receiving anonymous electronic mail is often not a good thing, but receiving an anonymously sent tangible package from You Goat Mail is more than good, it’s GOAT—as in the “greatest Gift Of All Time.” Specifically, it’s a little white plush goat packed in box of green “grass.”

Basing the business off a pun, the cuteness of goats and a little mystery, You Goat Mail GIFT stuffs a stuffed animal into a cardboard box with green faux grass and an optional customized note from the sender for $24.99-$30.

Twitter user Hunter Williams @hunterrr_w posted she got goated and said on June 15, “Received my GOAT from @YouGoatMail and I don’t think I’ve ever been happier [goat emoji, two-hearts emoji].” Who wouldn’t be tickled at receiving such an adorable mystery?

YGM didn’t return SN&R’s request to confirm by press time, but the company seems to be quite new; it joined Twitter in May, and by mid-June, YGM posted on its website that due to “an unexpected spike in goat demand,” it was sold out but expected a new herd to arrive soon. Lesson: Never underestimate goat demand.

YGM also launched a new product, Hay!, which is a box of artificial hay and a note for the recipient for about 15 bucks. Hey, it’s not as huggable, but it’s better than what’s in a PoopSenders.com package.

Is there anything that Cyrano can’t do? With his sword, he can defeat anyone in a duel—or even rout 100 men. He’s fabulously, verbally inventive, composing ballads on the fly, ghostwriting gorgeous love letters. He gleefully tweaks the rich and powerful— and somehow gets away with it. In this well-crafted production by the Davis Shakespeare Ensemble, actor Matt Edwards and director Rob Salas bring a tangible sense of spontaneous fun to this show—as if Cyrano (who naturally dominates every scene) was improvising his feats on the spot, and enjoying himself immensely. The sensation is catchy.

There are strong supporting performances (including Kristi Webb as the beautiful Roxane, Tim Gaffaney as the black-clad baddie Comte de Guiche and Pablo Lopez as lover-boy Christian) from a cast of 17. Fight director Sydney Schwindt contributes lively swordplay, costumer Caitlin Cisek conjures a 1600’s look and composer Richard Chowenhill’s music (singing and instrumental) sets the right tone.

But any production of Cyrano ultimately hinges on the actor in the title role—and Edwards takes the audience on quite a ride. His Cyrano is supremely proud of his landmark nose (“Tis a rock! A peak! A cape! No, it’s a peninsula!”) but also wracked with fear that he’s too ugly for any woman to love. His independence and panache, and his passionate refusal to bow to the will of the powers that be, make him irresistible.

With abundant humor (verbal and physical), swashbuckling fights, tender courtship scenes and a touching finale, this jaunty summer festival show is a robust, five-scene theatrical banquet. Ω

4 Bells Are Ringing The Davis Shakespeare Ensemble raids the archives for Bells Are Ringing, a much neglected 1956 musical comedy that enjoyed a two-year Broadway run, but has rarely been staged since.

This frothy confection of a show is built around the requisite boy-meets-girl romance, the cute angle being that they meet unseen on the phone.

Lead character Ella Peterson (the charismatic Gia Battista) is a “telephone girl” working for an answering service; she falls in love with a customer’s voice, struggling playwright Jeff Moss (an appealing Ian Hopps). Eventually, they meet in person; you know the rest. Spicing things up are kooky supporting roles, including a dentist yearning to compose Broadway anthems (Tim Gaffaney) and a racetrack bookie pretending to run a legitimate classical record business (Kyle Stoner). There’s also a Latin cha-cha number that unfortunately hasn’t aged well.

The story advances on formula-driven plot mechanics involving now-obsolete technology, but director Dennis Beasley plays up the loopy situational humor underpinning many scenes (like a bunch of young male actors desperately emulating Marlon Brando). Several songs (“The Party’s Over,” “Just In Time”) are timeless. Battista and Hopps make an appealing pair (and sing nice duets), and sprightly choreography (Kristi Webb and Battista) energizes several numbers. Bells Are Ringing may be something of a dated Eisenhowerera keepsake, but young love never goes out of style, and this production’s bubbly energy, winning attitude—and the show’s undervalued score—make it easy to enjoy.

Maybe you envision lots of backyard picnics, or perhaps you want to try every great restaurant in Sacramento.

Whatever your desire, there are countless food and drink options to sustain you this summer. It’s time for wine to step aside as more diners are turning to a growing variety of brews.

Sacramento has built an identity around being the “Farm-to-Fork Capital,” while simultaneously seeing a rise in local breweries and diverse taprooms. There has hardly been a better time to match the region’s bounty of fresh food with beer.

“The passion that Sacramento has for both food and beer go hand in hand,” says Keegan Currey, general manager at Kupros Craft House.

for the summertime, starting on the lighter side. While Currey is not particularly big on ciders, he says they can go well with salads.

“I love a dry cider to start with a summer salad,” he says, adding that his favorite is a fresh Caprese salad paired with cider from Common Cider Company out of Drytown. “The subtlety of flavors and the crispness of the cider complement each other wonderfully.”

While embarking on an outdoor adventure, it’s best to keep the food and booze light. One of Currey’s favorite treats after a nice hike is pretty simple: a bag of homemade jerky paired with a kölsch — a light, German-style lager. He’s keen on Sactown Union Brewery’s #Kölsch.

Another match made in heaven? Beer and cheese. A few years back, Currey paired beers with cheese from The Rind for an American Cheese Society event. He learned of the beauty that is the cheeseand-beer pairing.

“The nice, bitter hoppiness of a good IPA is perfect for a rich, pungent Roquefort or Gorgonzola,” Currey says.

“The maltiness of a rich red and the nuttiness of a wonderful, firm Alpine-style cheese [goes] perfectly together.”

Those meat eaters out there know that in the summertime, it’s all about that grill.

Tri-tip. Ribs. Burgers and dogs. All go well with good friends and an ice-cold brew.

Currey likes to sip a well-balanced IPA with his barbecue.

“That hoppiness and bitterness goes well with the sweet, smokey and savoriness of a good barbecue,” Currey says. He recommends Device Brewing Company’s Integral IPA. And no summer meal would be complete without a cool, delicious dessert. While pairing with sweets can be tricky, Currey says he loves a good beer float, with Shake Chocolate Porter from Boulder Beer poured over a scoop or two of vanilla. Cheers!

Abandon hope of wit, all ye who enter here. Based on the brief Internet fame of misogynist brothers Mike and Dave Stangle (but apparently not adapted from their misogynist book of the same name), Jake Szymanski’s Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates announces its utter lack of cleverness from the opening title: “Based on a True Story … sort of.” That’s a huge canyon of inane self-satisfaction for the rest of the film to leap, and if not for pure duty, I probably would have walked out right there. At that point, all hope truly was lost.

Of course, it’s absurd to expect droll repartee instead of body fluid chaos and highkey idiocy from the screenwriters of the Neighbors films and the director of such video shorts as Red Bull Energy Douche and Denise Richards’ Funbags. You’re paying for sophomoric gags about hairy vaginas and fingerbanging in the suana and butts rubbing against other butts, not for the social observation of Richard Linklater or the sophisticated wordplay of Whit Stillman. But Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates can’t even clear its own low comedic bar.

It’s a shame that the behind-the-camera team couldn’t make more of an effort, because everyone in front of the camera has their dial turned up to 11.

I do not mean that as a compliment. In fact, the entire film feels designed to disprove the idea that bad material gets funnier the longer and louder you scream it. You can count the number of scenes that don’t devolve into screeching matches on a couple of hairy palms.

All four leads are one-note gonzo, and while I admire the effort, it gets old fast once you realize they’re not saying or doing anything funny. The best moments tend to come from talented supporting players like Stephen Root, Sam Richardson, Kumail Nanjiani and Alice Wetterlund. They’re all working their butts off in service of a script that seems like it was written during a junior high school detention period.

Szymanski’s last film was the HBO minimovie 7 Days in Hell, another high-energy, low-cleverness effort that felt long even at a mere 43 minutes. The 98-minute running time of Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates makes it feel like the Berlin Alexanderplatz of soft-R raunchy comedies by comparison, especially in a torturous third act overloaded with hug-and-fart reconciliations. If the film ultimately wanted us to care about these characters, it probably shouldn’t have made them so loathsome in the first place. Ω

In backwoods Mississippi during the Civil War, dirt farmer Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) leads an antiConfederate insurgency and later, after the war, openly cohabits with a former slave (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), proudly acknowledging his children by her. It’s a true story, with political and racial ramifications well into the 20th century, and McConaughey and Mbatha-Raw are ideally cast. So much for the plus-side of this disjointed, lifeless movie; its assets (including beautiful scenery well-photographed

by Benoît Delhomme) are outweighed by the fact that script and direction are by the spectacularly inept Gary Ross. As with Seabiscuit, Ross falsifies the story when the truth would be more dramatic and cheaper to film; and as with The Hunger Games, he makes even hand-to-hand combat confusing and dull. J.L.

While vacationing in Morocco, a British university lecturer (Ewan McGregor) is befriended by a money launderer for the Russian Mafia who wants to defect (Stellan Skarsgård); reluctantly, the lecturer and his wife (Naomie Harris) are recruited to act as go-betweens between the Russian and an agent for British Intelligence (Damian Lewis). by Hossein Amini from the novel by John le Carré, the movie follows the same old line le Carré has been peddling for 50 years: The bad guys will always win, and the little guy will be lucky to escape with his life. Still, within that standard formula it’s expertly made—well-acted by all, with director Susanna White ratcheting up the suspense with a sure Hitchcockian hand.

Finding Dory

That sweetly forgetful fish from Finding Nemo (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) feels long-lost memories stirring of the parents she hasn’t seen since childhood (Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy), and sets out with her friends Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence) to reunite with them. Pixar does it again—or to be more specific, directors Andrew Stanton and Angus MacLane and writers Stanton, Victoria Strouse and Bob Peterson. Like Toy Story 2 (also a Stanton brainchild), here’s a sequel that not so much surpasses the original as deepens and enriches it, making it forever impossible to think of the two movies separately. Exhilarating adventure, irresistible wit, breathtaking visuals and an all-star voice cast (just about everybody wanted part of this one) combine in a seamless banquet of pure entertainment. J.L.

Now You See Me 2

The Robin Hood-like magicians of Now You See Me (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo and Dave Franco, joined by newcomer Lizzy Caplan) reunite for another sting—which goes sour, landing them in the clutches of a tech genius (Daniel Radcliffe) who dragoons them into his own shadowy scheme. Like its precursor, this sequel is very much a magic act itself, filled with misdirection and sleight of hand—and like that first movie, it’s great fun, with a delightful surprise almost every five minutes. Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman return too, and director Jon M. Chu navigates the convolutions of Ed Solomon and Pete Chiarelli’s script with an unaccustomed sprightly touch. Here’s that rare sequel that improves on the original— though you do have to have seen the original to be able to follow it. J.L.

An English orphan (Ruby Barnhill, wonderful) sees a mysterious giant (Mark Rylance) skulking around London in the wee hours, and for her curiosity is kidnapped from her bed. That’s the bad news. The good news: he’s the only one of his race who doesn’t eat children—he’s rather a sweet old colossus, as a matter of fact. Director Steven Spielberg and writer Melissa Mathison (who died during production) adapt Roald Dahl’s kids’ novel into a fantasy masterpiece that will be cherished for as long as movies live. Spielberg and Mathison’s magic from E.T. is still strong—on one level, this is E.T. for little girls—and they add levels of dreams-within-dreams beyond what even Dahl originally wrote. Take the kids to see this bottomless treasure chest of wonders or I’ll never forgive you. And neither will they. J.L.

script is incoherent (Wait, how did we get here? And where did those guys come from?) and filled with unforced errors. (it’s “Lord Greystoke,” not “Lord Clayton.”) David Yates’ direction is maladroit—scenes don’t match or flow, action is clumsily staged and poorly edited by Mark Day, the camera too close and out of focus; Yates resorts to swooping camera moves when he can’t think of any other way to make a shot interesting, which is often. Samuel L. Jackson offers comic relief, but half-heartedly, as if it’s hardly worth the effort. Nice CGI scenery, though. J.L.

A teenager newly arrived in LA (Elle Fanning) rises meteorically in the world of fashion modeling while more seasoned beauties eye her with resentment. Writerdirector Nicolas Winding Refn presents a stylish, shallow movie about a stylish, shallow profession, staging his heroine’s progress from naif to ice queen in lurid tableaux of languid strobes, cold, razor-sharp edges and slo-mo cascades of glitter. For a while, Fanning’s screen presence draws us in; we almost believe this Cinderella-in-reverse story. But Refn’s urge to shock drives him to push things too far, and just as the story peaks the whole movie goes stark raving nuts in a hallucinatory jumble without even the nightmare logic of surrealism. The movie’s style deserts it, and we realize that the substance was never there in the first place. J.L.

Swiss Army Man

Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert make their feature directing debut with this strange, surreal, wholly original and surprisingly emotional existentialist black comedy. Paul Dano stars as Hank, a suicidal castaway who gets a new lease on life when he befriends Manny (Daniel Radcliffe), a flatulent corpse who washes up on the beach Manny possesses inexplicable powers—his powerful farts allow Hank to ride him off the island like a Jet Ski, and his rotting body serves as a water purifier—and the two men form an intense bond that might only exist in Hank’s malnourished and deteriorating brain. Dano was born and bred for this sort of cuddly dementia, while Radcliffe has never been better, and the two actors forge a great onscreen rapport. Kwan and Scheinert can’t quite sustain the invention and energy all the way to the end, but most of Swiss Army Man is dazzlingly warped stuff. D.B.

Highest of high times forms. Of particular note were the California Honeydrops, who performed a few times over the course of the weekend yet always drew an enormous crowd, and the Main Squeeze, a sassy Chicago outfit with larger-than-life charisma.

At the same time, there was plenty of balance to the lineup and just enough diversity to keep things interesting. Acts like Elephant Revival, a gypsy-influenced folk five-piece, and psychedelic rock band Dr. Dog offered chances to chill out or groove depending on your mood. Late at night, you could choose a quiet singer-songwriter session in a dimly lit, cozy room prime for lulling you to sleep. Or, you could opt for a wild party.

Or, eventually, a chaotic, no-rules kickball game that may or may not have featured a mini silent disco on second base as the Sunday sun began to rise.

There was also a relative bounty of talented women on the bill: Samantha Fish and her blues-rock band stood out with her driving guitar and badass energy. Few others compelled so many to headbang.

Yes, there were big-name headliners like Ben Harper and Thievery Corporation, but they didn’t really matter. Every day was full of fun, feel-good acts who actually put on a great live show, unlike most corporate festival lineups stacked with young bands who have one radio hit and not much else. More than that, High Sierra is about the people, the vibe.

Burning Man-esque parties go down in campsites—Davis funk band Big Sticky Mess played a packed one against dusty tapestries—and people graciously accept glitter bombs again and again. There’s a whole cast of eccentric characters: the dude with a leashed kitten named Milky Way Galaxy; the tiny children in tie-dye already learning the basics of fire spinning; the gentleman offering “refreshments in the form of pouring cold water over your feet,” who could later be seen dancing with his empty water jug as if it were a person; and, of course, the naked guy, prancing around the grounds like a butterfly.

Let your freak flag fly: This one time at High Sierra Music Festival, New Orleans singer-songwriter Anders Osborne “sampled all kinds of things” and wound up naked, prancing around the grounds. He recalled this moment last weekend, during the 26th annual High Sierra, in an intimate, candid workshop that was supposed to be about Southern songwriting.

“Anyway, I turn into a butterfly,” he said, and left the story at that.

Osborne clearly loves the hippie-friendly festival, which takes place every Fourth of July weekend in Quincy. Lots of artists adore it, returning year after year. It shows in their high-energy performances; their consistent gratitude toward the sound team, staff and volunteers; their mingling with every other smiling, friendly attendee throughout the weekend; and their blissed-out words on stage.

For example, singer-songwriter Steve Poltz—a High Sierra staple— interrupted his own comedic cover of TLC’s “Waterfalls” on Sunday.

He blurted out: “This is the best show I’ve ever played.”

Similarly, rootsy, bluesy rock band the Record Company reflected on its High Sierra arrival: “Yesterday was one of the best days we’ve ever had,” guitarist Chris Vos said. “This is a magical place.”

One of the biggest surprise acts all weekend was the Accidentals, three nearly-teenagers who got hundreds dancing in what seemed like the very, very early morning with a blend of indie pop, folk, bluegrass, jazz and classical sounds.

They wowed with intricate arrangements, witty lyrics and a disarmingly charming stage presence.

“I can’t believe it’s 10 a.m.,” said Katie Larson, an outrageously talented 19-year-old multiinstrumentalist. “It feels like 5 in the afternoon.”

Along the same lines, electronic dance music duo the Floozies narrated an epic afternoon dance party with lots of funk and a little dubstep crunkness.

“That was the best 5:45 [p.m.] of my entire life,” producer Matt Hill said as the set wound down.

Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza laid the groundwork for modern conceptions of the self and the universe. On Spinoza’s Dream, Dave Nachmanoff—who boasts a Ph.D. in philosophy—references history’s greatest philosophers through accessibly scholarly folk-rock tunes. At the Davis-based artist’s local record-release show, Nachmanoff will perform solo on SINgeR-SoNgwRITeR acoustic guitar and piano. On the record, though, he was joined by a star-studded cast: Nachmanoff recruited Scotland’s influential singer-songwriter Al Stewart, plus his band from his breakthrough 1976 record Year of the Cat. Behold, two legendary pop-punk bands are coming to Sacramento: the Dickies (pictured), who formed in the San Fernando Valley in 1977, and the Queers, who formed in New Hampshire in 1981. Both bands worship at the altar of the Ramones and mix bubble-gum pop melodies, fun lyrics and hard-driving punk rock beats. It’s a format repeated 1,000 times over, but you’d be hard pressed to find two better bands at it. The Dickies are a bit campier than the PUNK Queers, who sing about girls a lot (accompanied by occasional camp). But both bands produce stuck-in-your-head-all-day ear-worm punk tunes. 1400 Alhambra, www.thedickies.com.

Sadly, Pink Floyd will never be getting back together; when keyboardist extraordinaire Richard Wright passed in 2009, the band’s fate was sealed, and many purists even argue it really ended with Syd Barrett—he died in 2006 and was TRiBUTE BAND unceremoniously exiled from the band in 1968. Thankfully, the existence of dedicated tribute bands means acts like Brit Floyd, hailing from Liverpool, England, can carry on the legacy. The band manages to capture all the nuance and sound of the legendary rock ’n’ roll band, and this is a show for which any Pink Floyd fan will want to get off the wall. 1301 L Street, www.facebook.com/britfloydshow.

This is what happened: One day she came home with a bunch of supercute clothes from her boutique and asked if I wanted to try something on. I tried on a romper, a tank top and some shorts. She told me I could keep all three. I was so happy until my paycheck came. It was very small.

She said she deducted the clothing as agreed. I didn’t agree. She told me it was a gift! She got mad when I brought this up and said she sold me the clothes at cost. I don’t want to tell my mom because she’ll make me quit. Do you have any ideas about how I can handle this situation?

It’s scary to be a teen confronting an adult, but no human being matures until they stand up for themselves. The first task is to pick the best possible moment. Ask to speak with your employer when she arrives home after work. That way if it doesn’t go well, you can leave immediately and go home. The second task is to prep the kids. Tell them you need a few uninterrupted minutes with their mother and ask for their cooperation. If your employer says she’s too busy, say the convo will take five minutes. Say this: “I know we disagree about whether the clothing was a gift or a discounted purchase. I want to be certain I communicate clearly from here forward. I expect to be paid in full for any hours I work for you. If you wish to sell me something, I will pay you for those items out of the money I receive from you. If you withdraw money from my paycheck again without my permission for any reason, I will stop working for you.” If she argues, blames, accuses or engages in any other style of intimidating conversation, say: “I just wanted to clear the air and be certain we understand each other.” Give her a minute to apologize (although I doubt she will), and then leave her home. Do something special for yourself afterward to celebrate your willingness to speak up for yourself.

OK, I fulfilled your request for a solution to your problem. I also want you to know that you are being exploited.

Your employer does not have your best interests at heart. She will likely pull a similar stunt in the near future. Maybe she will charge you for your lunches or insist that you bring your own lunch to work. She might suggest an outing but only provide enough money for her kids.

It’s also unlikely that she is employing you in accordance with the law. Yes, you probably should quit. After all, how can you trust your employer when she pulled a scam? You should definitely tell your mama about your employer’s behavior.

One last thing: I’m not a fan of teenagers labeling themselves as nannies. It just makes the people you work for appear wealthy.

Instead, list this job on your resume as “child care provider.” Describe your responsibilities like this: “Provided child care for three children, ages 4-10, organizing recreation activities, managing meals and supervising their daily routine.” Bam! That’s so much more powerful than saying you’re a babysitter or nanny and it will get you a (much-deserved) new gig. Ω

I hear the AUMA has made it to the ballot. Which way are you leaning?

—Imonda Phince The Adult Use of Marijuana Act has indeed made it to the ballot.

California voters will get a chance to join states like Oregon, Washington, Colorado and Alaska by legalizing recreational marijuana use for adults. Other states with adult-use initiatives on the ballot this year are Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada.

I am going to support AUMA and do all that I can to get this initiative passed. It isn’t perfect, but it’s really, really good, and it’s high time for California to retake its proper place as a leader in the recreational cannabis industry. I have traveled extensively through Washington, Oregon and Colorado, and I have to tell you that the freedom (and the money) that comes with cannabis legalization is incredible. And dig this: If the AUMA does pass, it doesn’t mean that our jobs as activists are done. The AUMA is just a step. A big step, but there will be things we need to change, and we will need pot activists to stay involved.

This election is gonna be nutty. Last time a legalization initiative was on the ballot, people lost their minds; some folks said unnecessarily harsh things and friendships were lost. Let’s all try to remember that no matter what side of the debate we are on, we all want what is best for the cannabis plant. Also—and don’t tell anyone I said this—but the growers that can’t handle the new rules will still be able to make a living on the deep black market, at least until Idaho and Texas and Georgia pass their own legalization laws.

So everyone stay polite, be nice, smoke weed and vote!

What’s the biggest epiphany you have ever had while under the influence of cannabis?

—Coffeeshop Christiana Good question. I don’t ever think I have thought about it. I am not sure if pot is really an epiphany-giver like, say, LSD or psilocybin. I don’t think I have had any thoughts while stoned that were mind-blowing or life changing, but when I am high, I generally have a pretty good time. Weed, at least for me, is more of a flavor enhancer and a smoother-outer.

I would say that cannabis reminds me that it is easier to be kind than it is to be mean.

This election is gonna be nutty.

What do you think is going to happen to Dabbenport?

—Livermore Larry No idea. To sum up: The folks at Dabbenport Extracts (winners of the 2016 High Times Cannabis Cup for best concentrates) were arrested last month by the Livermore police. They face multiple felony charges for manufacture and sale of cannabis. Alameda County (aside from Oakland. Oakland is awesome) has been against medical cannabis since forever. Hopefully, Dabbenport’s lawyers can get the charges dropped. I wonder if Alameda will continue to prosecute if AUMA passes. Ω Ngaio Bealum is a Sacramento comedian, activist and marijuana expert.

Blame It on the Beatles How the Fab Four made it OK to smoke marijuana The Beatles didn’t introduce us to cannabis. They were just saying it was out there and they knew about it. Regarding Paul’s “…had a smoke” line, Producer George Martin always suspected it was about how individual Beatles would disappear on him for minutes at a time, as he put it, “having a puff,” of cannabis during the days they were recording.

I finally got high in the spring of 1970. Six months later Congress declared cannabis a “Schedule I” drug, and made it more illegal than cocaine, methamphetamines or opium.

Nevertheless, I went with the zeitgeist and became a user. It made more sense to believe my peers over the propaganda.

It’s amazing to think about how we trusted song lyrics more than our elders. Nevertheless, that’s how most of us baby boomers were introduced to cannabis. Parents, teachers and politicians told us it was evil, and the Beatles inspired us to reconsider. Of course, they weren’t the only ones with suggestive pro-cannabis songs. But when those four lads from Liverpool, four guys that our parents already liked, wrote such song lyrics, the message rang out like an official “permission granted” to us all.

I was asked to write about my life with cannabis, but where to start? I never thought of it as a “life with cannabis,” but it has been, for 47 years now.

So I’ll just start at the beginning.

Back in 1969 we learned every slang term for cannabis in our high school “Health and Safety” book. While trying to keep us away from something we knew little about as freshmen, the California education system brought it right to us. Words you can still recognize, like “pot,” “weed,” “grass” and “getting stoned” were in there. This code language intrigued me. It sounded like grown-up stuff. The photographs of hand-rolled “joints” looked so illegal that I was fascinated, drawn in by the foreignness of it all.

Our teachers told us it was a gateway drug. They told us we would become heroin addicts. One day our teacher told us about a teenager who “puffed on a marijuana cigarette,” then ax-murdered his folks while they were in bed. The whole time I was watching two classmates, and I know they got high during lunch, acting perfectly normal. They didn’t even let out a snicker, which is amazing since the teen murderer anecdote seemed laughable. Even to kids like me who otherwise trusted authority, this is where our elders started to lose us.

Soon after many of us came to believe the Beatles were sending signals that it was OK to smoke cannabis. We discussed their lyrics endlessly. Was “Norwegian Wood” about hashish, and “Blue Jay Way” about marijuana? What does “Found my way upstairs and had a smoke” mean? And what about the lyric, “I’d love to turn you on?” Were the Beatles saying cannabis wasn’t bad?

It turned out that “Norwegian Wood” was really about a love affair, and “Blue Jay Way” was about jet lag and waiting for a friend. But “A Day in the Life” from the Sgt. Pepper’s album was indeed a signal to us all, and Paul McCartney admitted it in 1997: “John [Lennon] and I gave each other a knowing look.

‘Uh-huh, it’s a drug song. You know that, don’t you?’” he said.

FOR THE WEEk OF JULY 7, 2016 ARIES (March 21-April 19): Events in the coming

week may trick your mind and tweak your heart.

They might mess with your messiah complex and wreak havoc on your habits. But I bet they will also energize your muses and add melodic magic to your mysteries. They will slow you down in such a way as to speed up your evolution, and spin you in circles with such lyrical grace that you may become delightfully clearheaded. Will you howl and moan? Probably, but more likely out of poignant joy, not from angst and anguish. Might you be knocked off course? Perhaps, but by a good influence, not a bad one.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In the book A Survival Guide to the Stress of Organizational Change, the authors tell you how to raise your stress levels. Assume that others are responsible for lowering your stress levels, they say. Resolve not to change anything about yourself. Hold on to everything in your life that’s expendable.

Fear the future. Get embroiled in trivial battles.

Try to win new games as you play by old rules.

Luckily, the authors also offer suggestions on how to reduce your stress. Get good sleep, they advise. Exercise regularly. Don’t drink too much caffeine. Feel lots of gratitude. Clearly define a few strong personal goals, and let go of lesser wishes. Practice forgiveness and optimism. Talk to yourself with kindness. Got all that, Taurus?

It’s an excellent place to start as you formulate your strategy for the second half of 2016.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Normally I’m skeptical

about miraculous elixirs and sudden cures and stupendous breakthroughs. I avoid fantasizing about a “silver bullet” that can simply and rapidly repair an entrenched problem. But I’m setting aside my caution as I evaluate your prospects for the coming months. While I don’t believe that a sweeping transformation is guaranteed, I suspect it’s far more likely than usual. I suggest you open your mind to it.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): As I gaze into my

crystal ball and invoke a vision of your near future, I find you communing with elemental energies that are almost beyond your power to control. I’ll go with pathetic. Forgiving one’s allies and loved ones for their mistakes is wise, but allowing and enabling their maliciousness and abuse should be taboo. Keep that standard in mind during the coming weeks, Aquarius. People close to you may engage in behavior that lacks full integrity. Be compassionate but tough-minded in your response.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Can water run

uphill? Not usually. But there’s an eccentric magic circulating in your vicinity, and it could generate phenomena that are comparable to water running uphill. I wouldn’t be surprised, either, to see the equivalent of stars coming out in the daytime.

Or a mountain moving out of your way. Or the trees whispering an oracle exactly when you need it. Be alert for anomalous blessings, Pisces.

They may be so different from what you think is possible that they could be hard to recognize.

Johnny Doskow has been the voice of the Sacramento River Cats for 16 years and did broadcast work in Iowa for eight years before that.

In his time, the team’s longtime radio broadcaster has seen just about everything a person can see in baseball. Yet, as he recently attested, Doskow hasn’t tired of it, and he’s still doing the job he loves.

Doskow took time out of his busy in-season schedule to talk about life with the River Cats, the sacrifices his job requires and why he might never leave.

After 16 years of doing River Cats games, it hasn’t gotten old?

Nope, never does. It’s weird. Obviously, when you get done with a season, you exhale and you decompress a little bit because it’s 144 games in 152 days—this year, 153 days, got an extra day off.

So it’s a lot … I always tell guys, “If you don’t enjoy it, you should get out.” As soon as I stop enjoying it, I’m done. I’ll get out. But I still love it every day.

When you were starting off, did you ever think you’d be on the cusp of the major leagues?

Well, I was hoping. I didn’t realize how hard it was. I thought that I’d pay my dues in the minor leagues for 10, 12 years and then get a shot. But there’s so much talent in the minor leagues and guys that even are doing pre- and postgame in the big leagues. It’s as competitive of a field as you could ever see. It’s almost like acting as far as the competition is concerned. It’s maybe even harder than getting into a fulltime, big-time [acting career] just because there are so few jobs and guys don’t retire. Why would they? It’s the greatest job in the world. If it’s big leagues or bust for a lot of people, it can drive you nuts. … But I look outside my broadcast booth here. Every day, I feel fortunate. I never take it for granted. Every day, I feel lucky to get to do a game here.

Is it ever hard during the season getting to spend as much time with your daughter as you’d like?

Yes, it is hard. That’s the one part of the job that’s very difficult. The last several years with FaceTime, I’m able to see her, I’m able to call her. … That helps a lot.

That makes a difference. I mean, it’s not like being in person but it still makes a difference. I talk to her or now text with

her every day. I feel even if I’m away, I get to see her and talk to her. It’s not that you ever get used to it, but she knows this is the deal. She knows daddy’s gone.

She knows this is what he loves to do.

The one thing I have taken kind of solace in is the fact that even though I’m away, I feel like I’m teaching her to follow your passion and follow your dreams and do what you love to do. She sees me happy every day because she sees me in a job that I love. If I was to have another job that maybe I wasn’t as passionate about, I was home more, I probably wouldn’t be the same guy that I am now to be a dad. … I think for her to see my love of baseball is real and I’m doing what I have a passion for, that will help her [with] what she decides to do for a career.

Does she love baseball?

She does not. She is not a huge baseball fan. I mean, she’ll listen to my games now and then. She’s more into music and the arts, things like that.

You have an orange tuxedo that looks like something straight out of Dumb & Dumber. Can you say more about it?

I made a deal with one of our former players, Erik Hiljus, who bought me that tux. We had a party for his wife’s 40th, and everybody wore tuxes. So he got me

that orange tux, he said, “Well, I’m getting you this tux. I’m going to buy this tux for you, but you have to wear it once a year at a home game, every year.” I still haven’t worn it this year, but I’m going to wear it some point on Orange Friday. I’m going to wear it. That’s my agreement with him. I have to do it.

You’ve probably worked a few thousand games. Have you seen everything that you can see in baseball?

I haven’t seen an unassisted triple play yet here at Triple-A. We’ve seen just about everything, though. Seeing all these games and 24 years worth of stuff, we’ve seen a lot of stuff. But the great thing about baseball is you do see something—and [this is] such a cliche—but you do see something new every day. The other day we saw backto-back-to-back strikeouts in one inning.

The next inning, back-to-back-to-back home runs. Never seen that before. Tonight there will be something that’s never happened before. It’s pretty cool. Ω
