Trump, Iraq, the media Thirteen years ago this week, the United States bombed Iraq back to Mesopotamia. This despite millions of protesters worldwide rallying against George W. Bush’s and Dick Cheney’s war scheme.

It’s important to remember that the mainstream media mostly ignored Iraq War dissent. What with its honored tradition of “objective journalism,” media validated the Bush administration’s war cry and essentially laid out the red carpet to Baghdad.

And today, the traditional media is at it again, this time with presidential candidate Donald Trump.

It’s no secret that most Americans consider Trump completely unfit to lead this country—and worse. There are approximately 250 million people of voting age in the United States, but Trump has earned fewer than 4 million votes so far this primary season.

Yet traditional media—from Fox News to NPR, CBS to McClatchy— legitimize Trump. They report on him not just as if he’s a realistic choice for the White House, but also like there’s major support for the stubbyfingered, John Boehner-fleshed, hatespewing egomaniac.

He’s leading the GOP race, sure.

But the a majority of the voting public strongly rejects his candidacy.

Where’s that headline?

It’s time to blame the traditional media, what with its antiquated mission of objectivity, for Trump’s ascendancy. Their “just reporting the news” credo partly created this Trump monster. Not unlike how the media paved the desert for Bush and Cheney in Iraq.

C’mon, fellow journalists, let’s send Trump back to the fringe where he belongs. Trump is dangerous, Trump’s an idiot, Trump is unqualified, Trump actually isn’t popular. Shut him down.

No City Hall secrets

Stop biking like it’s 1995 Re “Ten things the next mayor of Sacramento absolutely needs to accomplish” by Nick Miller (SN&R Feature Story, March 10): I was glad to see you give some of your column inches and attention to alternative transportation options. However, I’m always struck by how much people think that the issue is a matter of one project here or one project there. Let’s quit playing Sim Bike Lane and start investing in transportation staff and dedicated funding to build out a connected network of great streets. Let’s finally get rid of the 1995 bike master plan (still in effect!) and develop a vision of the kind of network we want to build and how we get there.

Advocates and electeds have a myopic focus on projects. As a result, the way bike projects are prioritized, funded, and built out is extremely ad hoc and usually council-office driven. I think everyone on council at least in some way is on board with bikes, but are they willing to give up the “I get to choose one project a year” status quo? I think that’d make Sacramento great.

Re “Ten things the next mayor of Sacramento absolutely needs to accomplish” by Nick Miller (SN&R Feature Story, March 10): I like your suggestions for the next mayor, but would like to add one of my own, which is closely related to yours regarding more sunshine at City Hall. I would also like to suggest a couple of things the next mayor should definitely not do.

Not only should city employees not be using city email for anything other than public work, they should also never perform anything but public work while on the clock. The next mayor should specifically ensure no one in his or her office is working on personal projects—including the mayor’s own pet projects.

The next mayor should not sue the city or a local newspaper in order to prevent the public from knowing how business is done in City Hall. Doing so only

ensures we wonder what the mayor has to hide.

One of our reasons for choosing Sacramento is the American River bike way. We agree with the need for better access, and we are frustrated by construction that has lasted over a year. None of your top 10 mentioned crime directly, but we are shocked by Sacramento’s high crime statistics. Drastic reduction would surely be a worthy goal.

City planners aren’t worried that Yamanee will lead to an explosion of high-rise development in Midtown.

Midtowners will be craning their necks if plans for one of the tallest new apartment buildings in the city becomes a reality in the next few months.

Amid scores of Victorian and single-story retail shops on J Street, developers plan to drop Yamanee, a proposed 15-story high-rise, on the corner of J and 25th streets. The housing complex would be significantly taller than any other residential building in the area—and with such great heights comes a loftier debate over how vertical Midtown should grow.

board had mixed feelings after Yamanee developer Ryan Heater presented to the group earlier this month. So, MNA will send a letter to city planning staff highlighting both the group’s excitement and concerns about Yamanee.

“This project, it seems, has evoked very strong feelings in people,” Tillotson explained.

But it’s worth noting that the feeling that Yamanee mostly evokes is enthusiasm. A number of city staff and elected officials already support the project. At least 36 residents, business owners and community advocates have written letters of support for Yamanee, which the planning and design commission discussed

on December 10 and will consider for final approval in late April.

“When we look at smart growth and infill—how we support transit, better air quality—this is the type of project that we talk about,” Councilman Steve Hansen told SN&R. A few critics aren’t as enthusiastic.

They deem the project incongruous with several points of the city’s 2035 General Plan, which was gathered with community input over the course of multiple years and is meant to guide development in Sacramento over the next two decades.

The general plan says that buildings in Midtown can peak at 78 feet. At 171 feet, according to reports in the Sacramento

Business Journal, Yamanee would be the second-tallest Midtown building, behind the 179-foot Sutter Hospital tower that opened last August.

Preservation activist Karen Jacques wrote to the Planning and Design Commission ahead of its meeting last year that, if approved as proposed, Yamanee would send a message that the public needn’t take part in the general plan process “because their comments don’t matter and the promises they thought were made aren’t honored.”

But general plans can be amended to fit projects and protect the city against lawsuits. (The Environmental Council of Sacramento, one source for lawsuits, told SN&R that it’s monitoring Yamanee.)

Building projects can be approved even if they violate the general plan, provided they serve greater community good.

Some worry, though, that Yamanee could set a precedent in Midtown.

“This will completely kick open the door, and every developer who wants to build is going to come to you and ask for this same thing,” Sacramento County analyst Vivian Gerlach told the Planning

Heater insisted to SN&R that he’s not looking to develop more high-rises in Midtown. Yet his architect, Chris Smith, told the Planning and Design Commission last month that members of the Yamanee team “really are trying to set a precedent.”

People aren’t knocking the high-rise itself, however. The building could be LEED certified and offer ample green space. “It doesn’t have anything to do with aesthetics of the project, because personally I think it’s a nice-looking building,” Preservation Sacramento board member William Burg said.

“It’s the kind of building I’d want to see downtown. I’d want to see it in the railyards.”

But Heater, who lives and owns property on the grid, doesn’t want to build a high-rise apartment anywhere else.

“I’m doing this project because I like the neighborhood so much, because I live here,” Heater said. “It wouldn’t be this project if I didn’t live here.”

A Sacramento-area native and 1993 graduate of Rio Americano High School, Heater moved back to Sacramento after working in commercial real estate in New York and Honolulu. A few years ago, he got the idea to open a restaurant in a different location in Midtown and enlisted Smith, a New York friend, to weigh in.

“As a business owner and a restauranteur, I told him, ‘It’s a terrible business. You should not go into this business,’” Smith told the commission last year of his advice to Heater. “And I said, ‘The building that’s there is a nice building, but really should be torn down, and there’s a lot of opportunities in this area.’”

Heater said he enjoys showing off Sacramento to people like Smith, and that friends generally come away thinking of the city as a well-kept secret. Smith, now the principal architect for Yamanee, said as much to the commission.

“After coming back—I don’t know, seven, eight, nine, 10 times—I kind of fell in love with the place,” Smith said on December 10. “It’s like Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Close to me. It’s something that’s up-and-coming. It’s a place that has vibrant people, young people, and I see opportunities here that I see in other areas where we do development.”

Heater has spent the past couple of years on the project. He purchased the two current buildings on the parcel. He said Yamanee is uniquely suited for this location and might not work elsewhere in Midtown.

In California, Latinos were the most likely to be killed by law enforcement at the time of arrest in 2014, according to a new data portal from the California Department of Justice.

The data portal, titled openJustice v1.1, went live February 17, and is part of Attorney General Kamala Harris’ criminal justice transparency initiative, according to a release from her office.

The OpenJustice portal publishes new and previously available information at a city, county and state level in a dashboard format with multiple pull-down options for tailoring the data. Topics include crime, arrest and clearance rates; law enforcement deaths and injuries; and deaths in custody.

Regarding the latter category, 82 people died as a result of homicide by law enforcement in 2014, the most recent year for which data is available at a statewide level. Nearly half (49 percent) were Hispanic. Another 28 percent were white, while 18 percent were black. Approximately 5 percent were asian or Pacific islander.

Hispanics and blacks were both overrepresented in lawenforcement deaths, compared to their shares of the state population. Hispanics make up 37 percent of Californians, while only 6 percent of the state is black.

Whites (41 percent of the population) and Asian/Pacific Islander residents (13 percent) were underrepresented in law enforcement homicides.

But homicide was a more likely cause of death than any other at the time of arrest for most of California’s racial groups.

For the 45 white subjects who died during arrest the same year, homicide by law enforcement was the cause of 51 percent of them. The next leading manner of arrest-related deaths were equally split between “pending investigation” and accidental, both representing 18 percent.

Of the 33 black men and women who died during arrest in California during 2014, 46 percent resulted from homicide. Another 24 percent died from accidental causes.

Arrest-related deaths of black subjects were the result of homicide 72 percent of the time during the nine-year period through 2014.

When considering only sacramento County sheriff’s and police departments, there were 13 custody-related deaths in 2014, though the Elk Grove and Galt police departments didn’t submit data. Seven deaths were the result of homicide, including three white individuals, two who were Hispanic and one who was black.

JoiNiNG THe baN Sacramento County could soon join the plastic bag bandwagon.

County supervisors will consider a draft ordinance that reigns in use of the offending material later this month, following a March 8 workshop that elicited support for a local policy. The ordinance would align pretty closely with a challenged state law that will be the subject of a referendum in November, and potentially impact more than 500 convenience stores and food marts in the unincorporated areas of the county, a staff report says.

Approximately 147 jurisdictions in California have already adopted ordinances banning single-use plastic bags, the staff report says, including the cities of sacramento and davis. The county seems to be tailoring its policy after the one adopted a year ago in the city of Sacramento, which conducted several months of outreach and education before enforcing its ordinance.

Californians Against Waste, California Grocers Association and the Sacramento Environmental Commission have expressed support for a countywide ordinance. If the referendum fails, the statewide ban goes into effect. (RFH)

Sacramento rapper Mozzy released three albums in the five months after leaving prison last year. Now, his videos regularly garner millions of views on YouTube.

Sacramento rapper and convicted gang member Mozzy is now one of the music industry’s most-wanted commodities. Can he escape the streets and make it in the biz?

It’s late one SUMMER NIGHT outside a market in Oak Park and Timothy Patterson, known in this neighborhood as Mozzy, dials up a friend with a video camera. “Come through. I’ve got to get some shit off my chest real quick.”

An hour later, he’s filmed an entire video, “Bladadah,” that will change his life forever.

The shoot happened at the Bonfare on the corner of Broadway and Alhambra Boulevard. Just another Sacramento gas station with metal bars over its windows. Yet 3 million YouTube views and some heavy police surveillance later, Patterson is now a nationally famous rapper.

“Bladadah” was a hit. But it also could be viewed by law enforcement as evidence: of loitering, of open container violations, and—due to the red colors Mozzy and his associates don—of suspicion of gang activity.

But Mozzy, 28, sees the video simply as regular life in south Sac. He defines regular a little differently than most, though. Regular is having incarcerated and absentee parents with drug-addiction issues. Regular is finding guidance and brotherhood in gangs.

Regular is territorial battles and shootouts.

Regular is family members and close friends doing life behind bars—or, worse, ending up murdered.

Since his release from prison on April 1 of last year, for violation of probation and possession of a firearm and a controlled substance, Mozzy’s tallied three consecutive impressive albums in the span of five months. This gained him critical praise from Complex.com, Pitchfork.com and Rolling Stone. During the past two months, he’s taken meetings with major record labels to discuss deals.

Mozzy says that, while in jail, all he did was write, plan, plot and strategize. “I told myself when I get out I’m gonna wreck shit.

I’m gonna drop over 10 projects within the first year of my release.”

With the Beautiful Struggle mixtape, out last week, and two more albums completed, he’s achieving his goal. Mozzy is now poised to become the biggest rapper ever out of Sacramento.

And yet, in that same breath, the troubled past that informs his raps and fueled his success might also lead to his demise.

‘One Of the wOrst days Of my life’ Mozzy started rapping at age 12—around the same age he first held a gun.

He shares this detail in the living room of a boarding home deep in Oak Park. Mozzy is lively, wound up, eager to tell his life story.

He’s a man ready for his close-up.

Sort of. Consider: His black MercedesBenz CL550 is parked outside, but he is dressed head-to-toe in black Wal-Mart sweats and bummy black sneakers. Brand details he shares with a big grin. His undershirt is basic white. Unlike Mozzy from the videos, everyday Mozzy is not wearing the red associated with the Oak Park Bloods.

He’s a regular guy.

Across the table is Corey Credic, president of rap at Black Market Records, a locally based label that’s put out albums by Brotha Lynch Hung and X-Raided. Credic is partially responsible for Mozzy’s Yellow Tape Activities mixtape appearing on the label, and he hopes to facilitate a long-term record deal. But, in the weeks to come, Black Market will be competing with major labels like Epic and Atlantic to sign Mozzy on the dotted line.

This isn’t going to Mozzy’s head, though, as the sweatpants indicate.

He espouses many maxims, but at the forefront currently: “A nigga wanna be regular,” he says.

Mozzy grew up with his grandmother, Brenda Patterson Usher, since age 2. Her Oak Park home is decorated with Black Panther literature, and she instilled discipline in the young man. With his mother and his father out of the picture, Usher is a pillar in the family.

On the collision of local rap and gangs: Who’s breaking through, and who’s getting shot

Deandre Darnell Oliver doesn’t remember much about last month’s near-execution.

The producer-rapper formerly known as “Lil Lav” was exiting an Arden-Arcade liquor store on the night of February 20 when eight bullets tore into his 6-foot-3 frame, he and his mom say. The younger brother of incarcerated local rapper Lavish D flatlined twice in the hospital.

“I was assassinated. I wasn’t shot, I was assassinated,” he told SN&R. “But God has a plan for me.”

On March 10, the hobbled but upbeat Oliver was back in the studio making music.

His dream, he says, is to escape through his art, not get sent to prison for it, like his brother. “I believe music can change my life,” said the man who now performs as Prince Dreda.

But it’s unsettled times in the Oliver kingdom.

Same goes for Sacramento’s gangster rap scene.

Brother Donald “Lavish D” Oliver is serving a six-year prison sentence after accepting a plea deal last summer in a gun-possession case, which used his music to portray him as the leader of the south Sacramento gang Starz.

Lavish’s chief rap competititor Mozzy, a validated member of rival gang Oak Park Bloods, is enjoying the kind of breakout success that hasn’t been seen around these parts in decades.

The divergent fortunes of the scene’s two most notorious artists are rippling through both the music world and the underworld.

“There’s a lot of people coming out of Sacramento right now,” said Coop D’Vill, a blogger for Siccness.net and an underground rap industry watcher. “Thanks to Mozzy and Lavish.”

D’Vill predicts Mozzy running mate Celly Ru could be the next to pop. And then there are the hungry suitors, roiling the scene as they aim for the throne. D’Vill ticks off several names belonging to prolific local artists. Some are associated with the gangster life and some aren’t, but they’re all workhorses.

“They’re staying relevant. That’s the best way I could put it,” D’Vill said. “You got to stay relevant in this microwave rap game.”

Meanwhile, law enforcement is wondering how all this will reverberate on the streets.

Before Lavish D pleaded to the gangenhanced charges last June, the rapper had been a target of law enforcement for years, thanks to provocative lyrics and videos that authorities believe facilitated at least four realworld gang shootings. Lavish’s music played a heavy role in his prosecution, and it’s a tool that authorities regularly use to both identify and also implicate gang members.

“The music is a big factor,” said defense attorney David Bonilla, who currently represents Daniel Thomas Bush, a.k.a. rapper Poppy Chulo, in a gun-possession case. “It’s a big factor for Daniel’s case.”

It was in 2011 as well. Bush’s then-attorney Jennifer Mouzis got the rapper acquitted of attempted murder charges. Mouzis says authorities weren’t able to connect Bush to the crime beyond a disputed witness voice identification. But they tried to sway the jury with the music of Poppy Chulo, who has also recorded with Mozzy.

Juries are afraid of gangs and anything that’s remotely connected to them—even if it’s homemade music videos uploaded to YouTube.

The tactic usually works. “The jury just sucks up that stuff like you wouldn’t believe,” Mouzis said. That’s because juries are afraid of gangs and anything that’s remotely connected to them, Mouzis says—even if it’s homemade music videos uploaded to YouTube.

It was a Lavish D video that played a crucial role in convicting those responsible for the 2010 gang shooting that killed an innocent bystander at a Holiday Inn Express in Elk Grove. Authorities used the video to identify several of the suspects, who appeared as extras in the video, “Project Nigga.” Mouzis represented one of the defendants in the case, a minor at the time, and got him acquitted.

The thing that helped her case most of all?

“My client was not in the video,” she said.

Deandre Oliver claims the link between gangster rap and gangster behavior is overblown. “Participating in criminal activity is a choice,” he said.

“That’s not how I get down.”

Whether it factored into his near-death is unknown.

Oliver says he has “selective memory” of the attack. He’s unsure about when it exactly happened and says he doesn’t know who was behind it.

That may be true. But it also isn’t unusual for victims of gang crimes to be reluctant witnesses on their own behalf.

“My kids don’t tell me much about that stuff,” said his mother, Claudia Oliver. “But somebody needs to be at fault for this.”

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department confirmed it was investigating an injury-involved shooting that occurred February 20. Spokesman Sgt. Tony Turnbull told SN&R the Sheriff’s Communication Center received 911 calls regarding multiple shots fired in the 1300 block of Fulton Avenue, where the Kings Wines & Liquor store is located. “A 27-year-old victim showed up at a local hospital suffering from gunshot wounds,” he wrote in an email.

Turnbull couldn’t reveal the victim’s name and declined to be interviewed about rap-infused animosity between gangs. “I don’t have any comment on rappers and gangs locally,” he wrote. “Nothing has been brought to my attention.”

Deandre Oliver says he’s left the nonsense behind. “I’ve been to prison. I’ve been shot.

I’ve done all that,” he said.

In 2010, Oliver was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading no contest to a felony gun-possession charge. Online court records show he’s currently facing one felony count of recklessly evading a peace officer, which carries a maximum sentence of a year in prison and a $10,000 fine.

His goal right now, he says, is to make music with his two children that represents all of Sacramento, not just one neighborhood, and to figure out how to make money off of it.

Asked whether he’s inspired by the sudden success of his brother’s former sparring partner, Oliver demurs. “I wouldn’t even know him if he walked past me right now,” he said of Mozzy. “Ain’t nothing unique about it.”

But Oliver says those are the criticisms of an artist, not a gang member. “At the end of the day, it’s just music,” he said. “What are they going to do, take me to jail for making a song?”

Mozzy loafing outside a supermarket in the valley. After a tough life on the streets of Oak Park, he says he wants to leave gangs behind and live a normal life.

“She was a nigga’s mother and father,” Mozzy says. “On Mother’s Day I get her a card, and on Father’s Day I get her a card. She really a nigga’s everything.”

He describes her as soulful and having an undeniable strength of self. “She ain’t no turn-the-othercheek type of woman.”

But a lifestyle outside his grandmother’s home tempted, however, and Usher could not protect him forever. “You’re 13 years old, you come across the gun.

Somewhere you found in the house either at your auntie’s or your mom’s. … You rummage around to find that gun. You posing with that mufucka in the mirror,” he remembers of that first time with a firearm.

“And the next day, when you got free time and everybody out the house, you go get it again. Empty the bullets out and start shooting it in the mirror.”

As he grew up, Mozzy emulated television and sought out men living the gangster life in his neighborhood. He looked up to them and learned their various trades, from selling dope to pimping and “gangbanging” (of course, no one calls it that anymore). He witnessed “slidin’,” which outside of Oak Park vernacular might be known as drive-by shootings. Another Mozzy term is “slithering,” a.k.a. hustling or getting by—“slither to the store for some Sprite.” These lyrics are part of Mozzy’s raps, and he at once documents his community, à la David Simon of The Wire fame, and is a product of the environment, like D’Angelo Barksdale. Mozzy believes in realism: If he hasn’t lived it, if it’s not in his day-to-day life, he won’t rap about it.

Realism has consequences. Gang experts with the Sacramento Police Department keep close surveillance of local music and YouTube videos to identify members. Mozzy is on their radar. Affiliation with the Oak

Complex declared Mozzy the best rapper no one has heard of, and he ranked No. 22 on Rolling Stone’s 40 Best Rap Albums of 2015.

Park Bloods and Ridezilla clings to him despite his current claims of dissociation.

Much stems from a dispute with Starz gang member and fellow Sacramento rapper Lavish D. Mozzy dissed Lavish on his 2014 track “I’m Just Being Honest,” from his mixtape Next Body On You. Police say this led to the notorious Arden Fair Mall assault at a shoe store.

Lavish D is currently serving six years for videotaping the mall assault, a sentence escalated by his gang affiliation and a previous charge from 2013 for firearm possession.

As for Mozzy, the blowback from above-the-law boasts caught up to him on March 21, 2014.

Detectives were conducting surveillance of alleged gang members, due to an ongoing feud and shootings between the Oak Park Bloods and Starz gangs. Mozzy was riding shotgun in a sedan that was under surveillance when police pulled it over for a traffic violation. A search of the vehicle produced two white Styrofoam cups containing codeine syrup, a greenand-black Glock handgun loaded with a 17-round magazine, additional Glocks loaded with .40-caliber ammunition, and a Sig Sauer handgun, also loaded. Detectives then searched the household of Billy Dee Smith, which produced a stolen M16A2 Commando automatic assault rifle, a 30-round magazine and another .40-caliber pistol.

Essentially, military-grade weaponry.

Mozzy’s manager snaps a pic of him with a fan. His songs now regularly appear on Spotify playlists after Complex wrote that “Sacramento Rapper Mozzy Had the Best Run of 2015.”

“I wouldn’t have been around them cats if I knew there was surveillance,” Mozzy says of the incident. “I still feel like it’s a setup.”

At a preliminary hearing, local gang expert Detective Joseph Ellis claimed that the defendants possessed the guns for the benefit of and in association with the Oak Park Bloods. Police requested to submit seven Mozzy tracks, including “I’m Just Being Honest,” as evidence.

The intent was to play, transcribe and watch videos to demonstrate the purpose of their possession. All three defendants pleaded no contest and received state prison sentences.

Mozzy did a full year due to a probation violation for a previous firearm conviction.

“It was one of the worst days of my life,” he says. But he also called it a “blessing in disguise.

“I needed to get my mind right and reflect. That’s exactly what that shit helped me do.”

How Mozzy got faMous The night he shot the “Bladadah” video outside of Bonfare started like any Sacramento evening.

Mozzy was shirtless, wearing crisp white jeans and a red hat bearing his name—the red of a politician’s power tie. He sweat in the summer heat, his skin glowing under the fluorescent lights.

Mozzy says the term “bladadah” is the sound of automatic weapon fire. It’s an Oak Park patois used to provoke rival gangs, something heard when threats turn into “slidin’” activities. He didn’t invent bladadah, but rather absorbed it by proxy.

“A nigga just want to live a regular, normal life.

Regular shit like going to Chuck E. Cheese and getting ice cream.”

Mozzy on life after the streets

It’s also the name of a record released last year, and the video’s success reflects Mozzy’s aesthetic: simple and real. The video budget was the price of Luc Belaire Rosé bottles poured into Styrofoam cups.

“If I could’ve got it all in one scene, naturally, I would’ve did it,” Mozzy reflected on the shoot.

“We decided not to try too hard, because we really wanted to focus on the wordplay itself. Just the words.”

Mozzy’s gift of gab separates him from the average rapper. When Black Market released Yellow Tape Activities on September 11 of last year, it was his ability to surprise founder Cedric Singleton that sealed the deal.

“My measure of a rapper worth signing is whether or not I can predict the next word he’s going to rhyme,” Singleton said. “With

His wordplay garnered the interest of music journalist David Drake, who declared Mozzy the best rapper no one has heard of for Complex, a youth-culture website, in addition to a 7.5 out of 10 Pitchfork review and inclusion at No. 22 on Rolling Stone’s 40 Best Rap Albums of 2015 list.

His lyrics zero in on issues that matter: minimum wage and crummy retail jobs, and the temptation of hustling on the streets. On the heartfelt “Off the Dribble,” from Yellow Tape, Mozzy raps about the allure of illegal entrepreneurialism, especially for a young man with only a GED: “McDonald’s ain’t gonna cut it, bitch / we on the turf / the fuck I look like waking up to go to work?”

Much of Mozzy’s music is produced by JuneOnnaBeat, an Oak Park producer that he’s known since childhood. Much of it evokes melancholy through soft synthesizer sounds, Mozzy says: “I need something that’s going to cry so I can get this pain out.”

Mozzy on his process: “I talk to myself while I be driving and shit.

Smoking weed, sipping syrup and talking to myself because I ain’t got nobody to talk to. So I talk to these records every chance I get. In order for that, you gotta give me that crier.

That crier that has substance.”

So much of mainstream rap is a capitalist celebration of luxury, but Mozzy is the antithesis of lavish. He is drinking from Styrofoam cups, shirtless outside a gas station. He’s no provocateur out to scare middle America, either. His lyrics invoke a harsh realism that makes no apologies for the things he’s seen and done. “You don’t wanna live how I live / my life difficult,” he raps. “I’m all in and I ain’t trippin’, though.”

As music critic Drake wrote in his Yellow Tape Activities review for Pitchfork, Mozzy’s “unprecedented directness makes murder less abstract, an absurdity transformed, seen through the more familiar lenses of peer pressure and

Mozzy on his upbringing shared burdens.” He later wrote in an email that Mozzy’s “treatment of violence is deceptively ethical.

“By producing a shock in listeners rather than relying on generic tropes of violence, he is forcing us to confront street violence not as a familiar tool of entertainment but as something alienating and horrifying,” he wrote.

It’s also therapeutic for a young man pained by a life he often refers to as a beautiful struggle: “I know there ain’t no future in this way of living / the way we living / either death or on our way to prison.”

He repeats lyrics from his song “Dead And Gone,” off Gangland Landscape: “Nowadays a nigga dream about a normal life.”

Mozzy keeps a close circle of confidants, and he makes a point of noting that he isn’t joined by his posse for his SN&R interview. He came alone.

“I’m real cool by myself. Always been a very solitary person. I can sit in the room—read books, write raps, work out. Just hella weird shit like that. I’m comfortable with me. I get a lot more done that way.”

Since his release from jail last April, Mozzy has had multiple 10-day arrests, encounters he describes as “bousy shit.” (It’s a reference to a codeine habit.) But Singleton of Black Market Records sees the artist as having put the gang life behind him. He tries to be a mentor for artists on his label, hoping that past affiliations fade. He thinks that, given Mozzy’s maturity, he can look beyond that life.

There’s also the fear. Singleton remembers Mozzy confessing to him: “‘Ced, I could be pumping gas and they’ll take my life.’”

Singleton responded: “You have the ability to choose where you pump your gas.”

Mozzy is trying to move forward. There is the saying “you’re only as good as the company you keep,” to which Mozzy added, “You fuck with nine broke niggas, you’ll be the 10th one.”

His past is marred by a decade on probation and he lives with the awareness that death is just as likely.

This year, his cousin and fellow rapper E-Mozzy was shot in San Francisco, but has since recovered.

Though he’s animated and jovial mostly, addressing the number of people he’s lost to life imprisonment or murder wipes away Mozzy’s smile, his voice loses levity.

“Regular to the point that niggas get numb to it. Like you dealing with so many deaths that you stop showing up to funerals, even though they your brothers. You just numb,” he said.

He keeps the words “tomorrow ain’t a promise” in the front of his mind, he says, since the day he left prison. He said he slept in the studio for two straight nights. In those 48 hours, he recorded most of the Gangland Landscape mixtape, until he experienced headaches and fatigue. “I can’t keep this shit bottled in. It’s got to get out of me.”

Mozzy pauses to make a phone call to his probation officer, putting him on speaker phone. He’s supposed to meet with a PO named Brad, and he assures Brad that his tardiness is due to an “important-ass interview.” On the other end, Brad can be heard saying “don’t say nothing stupid” in encouragement. When

Mozzy hangs up, he refers to Brad as the dopest probation officer.

“He really fuck with me. He do his job. If I fuck up, I fuck up.

He genuine, man. That’s what we lacking as far as authority. He assists me, and he calls me. He tells me ‘You need to take that off your Instagram, fuckisyoudoing?

You need to take these classes, fuckisyoudoing?’”

Michael Bays, division chief of the Sacramento County Probation Department, says screening of social media is not uncommon; it’s part of an effort to reduce risk to reoffend, one he says hasn’t always been the department’s approach.

“We have to retrain them cognitively as to how to make appropriate decisions when they are out in the community,” Bays explained. “You have some unique relationships, in which we’re trying to help these folks succeed while we also hold them accountable.”

Bays says protocol when he was a field officer in the 1990s was much different. Back then, if you slipped up, it was back to prison.

Recently, Mozzy earned himself work service hours for published photographs of him smoking weed.

A mistake he intends to not make again. Bays says it’s about treating people on a human level and being forthright in order to become a team. A strategy that kind of makes the probation department part of Mozzy’s management team.

“We have officers that are openminded and get to know the people well enough that they are able to look at things differently than we used to,” Bays said.

It helps Mozzy realize that there are possibilities beyond the life he lived in Oak Park.

“A nigga just want to live a regular, normal life. Have a dope ass house, paid for. Dope ass vehicle. And just [money] tucked off for my daughter. Regular shit like going to Chuck E. Cheese and getting ice cream.

“It ain’t the case right now, but I’m regular. Period.” Ω

the local music scene in motion. What do you see? Bands of passionate part-timers doing their best to bring their art to whatever bar or nightclub will put up with their noise?

While that image might seem complete, there’s a crucial person who often gets left out of our conception of the music scene: the talent buyer.

Some call them promoters or bookers, but whether they work for the house or approach venues independently, they’re the ones responsible for putting together a bill, finding a time and place to play and ensuring that everybody else in town knows that they’re supposed to be at that place at that time.

Take Chris Lemos as an example. The primary booker for Starlite Lounge for at least a year-and-a-half, he manages the venue’s calendar. As such, he’s in a position to decide what bands do, and don’t, make it onstage, and his years in bands such as the doomy Chrch and the weedgrindy xTomHanx show his devotion to the metal scene.

The shows that get people to Starlite the most are Lemos’ metal bills, which often lean toward his tastes in the doom, black and death subgenres. It helps that, for whatever reason, Sacramento is a metal town and that there’s such a strong pool of diverse extreme bands in the area, he said.

“Metal shows do better than almost anything else in Sacramento, as of right now, at least,” he said.

Of course, metal isn’t all that happens at Starlite, and Lemos works to get more diversity into the calendar.

“Not everyone can go to a metal show every night of the week,” he said.

The taste factor is something that Mark “Gonzo” Gonzales, of Old Ironsides, explains as a necessary part of booking. It takes being a fan of music to know which bands can draw a crowd, and the good bands that you know about likely reflect your tastes to begin with.

That’s why you’ll see more hard rock and alternative options at Old I: partly because it sells there and partly because the talent buyer’s first record was Kiss’ Alive!

The personal informs the professional, and the professional end is far more important, Gonzales said.

“If I don’t do a good job of what I do, we could be another statistic here in town, another club that closes down,” he said.

The venue’s goals shape scheduling decisions as well.

While Lemos and Gonzales are both working for venues that see themselves as bars with live music, Gabi Garcia treats Blue Lamp as a venue that happens to have a bar, a smaller Boardwalk or Ace of Spades, she says.

She bought Blue Lamp with her husband Ben in 2013, and although live music factored largely in their vision for the bar, it wasn’t until 2015 that they shifted entirely to a music-first perspective, Garcia said.

“If we don’t have live music, we’re closed,” she said.

That venue-first orientation has some noticeable differences, like the sound system that cost thousands to get up and running. It also shows in the calendar, which hits more eclectic notes: art shows, hip-hop, death metal, ska, variety shows and more.

Garcia books the shows (and tends bar, and mops the floor, and so on), and she spends maybe four hours a day responding to inquiries in her email and Facebook account to get her calendar square.

“You have everything from [classic punk band] the Queers, who wanted a $3,000 guarantee, to a band from Indiana that’s got 53 Facebook likes hitting you up and wanting a date or to play a show,” she says.

Not to say that the calendar doesn’t reflect her taste as much as other venues, but Garcia says she learned quickly to shy away from personal preferences that could lead to taking on big, risky shows that cost a lot but might not pay out so well. She often works with independent promoters, particularly in the hip-hop scene, to keep her calendar packed.

Rolling the dice

Booking bigger bands is a gamble, a fact not lost on talent buyers. Both Garcia and Gonzales admit they prefer to stay away from the crapshoots of big-guarantee acts in favor of smaller, less demanding groups that are content with the usual arrangement of splitting door proceeds between the bands.

Lemos gambles a little more frequently. He recently put up a hefty guarantee to bring underground stoner metal legends Bongzilla to Starlite on March 7. And while more than 100 people turned out to the $20 show, he still lost a few hundred dollars.

Worst of all, that loss is totally on him.

“The bigger the deficit, the harder it is to come up with,” Lemos said.

He has no regrets about it, though.

First of all, “that show fucking ruled,” he said. And second, it’s not like every guarantee goes south. More often than not, he seems to break even.

“It hurts but whatever,” Lemos said. “What am I gonna do, quit and get a real job? Boring.”

Even then, that’s a show that was relatively successful, as in, both listeners and the band actually showed up.

It can go deeper south with little to no warning.

The first show Gonzales booked back in 2011 nearly came to a screeching halt after his headlining band got waylaid in Mexico due to a tour bus malfunction the day they were supposed to play. On top of that, the second band on the bill had its drummer unexpectedly quit. With just one band left, Battalion, of Davis, it looked like he was destined to fail before he even got going.

It wasn’t over, though. Thanks to some sharp wrangling from Battalion and assistance from friends in the band Blvd Park, Gonzales somehow had about 70 people show up that night for just those two bands, turning a crumbling disaster into an overwhelming success. When other promoters called him to see how his first show went, Gonzales says they couldn’t believe what they pulled off—but he

certainly doesn’t take too much credit for himself for what happened.

“I got lucky,” he said. “It could have been over for me.”

For the love

It takes being a fan of music to know which bands can draw a crowd.

Booking shows wouldn’t be such a gamble if Sacramento wasn’t in a unique position. Unlike other big cities, the city doesn’t have the same kind of clientele, the sort that wanders around at night and will show up anywhere on a whim, Lemos says.

“It’s not like Oakland or San Francisco where I can just do a show any night of the week and people will probably just come because they’re out all the time,” he said. “Sacramento’s a working town. Most people work 9-to-5, or they work in the industry and they’re working while the shows happen.”

Sacramento audiences need a reason to come out, which means house bookers look to promote each show less like a regular concert and more like a big event. And even after all sorts of hard work such as Facebook outreach, hitting up local media for ink and sticking fliers all over town, sometimes a light drizzle or an unexpected competing show at Sleep Train Arena can still leave you with a band playing an empty room.

So with all of the labor, the night hours and the constant threat of poor attendance, why keep doing it?

“It’s definitely not the greatest paid [job], but I’d rather live frugally and have a job where I can see the bands and book the bands and see a scene that used to be nonexistent, that people used to pass by, just grow and be a part of it and be right in the middle of it,” Lemos said.

Garcia and Gonzales are in the same camp: The money’s not exactly great, but the thriving scene is reward enough.

And if you still have questions about whether talent booking is a cushy job, Garcia can set you straight: “All I can say is that it’s so much harder than you can imagine or than anyone could ever tell you.” Ω

No more grease: Green Fish Co. & Juice softly opened last week, and it does indeed specialize in fish and juice.

The health-focused eatery is actually from the same folks behind Slice of Broadway (2424 16th Street), which closed in December 2015. The new concept swaps out pizza for tilapia wraps and the dark red-and-black interior for a color palette of white, gray and green.

Green Fish serves a lot of build-your-own dishes in the vein of Chipotle. Choose salads, wraps, salad wraps, tacos and plates or sides, with protein options of tri-tip, salmon, shrimp, mahi-mahi, chicken, tilapia and tofu. Expect to spend $6-$11 on a meal.

Then, there’s the juice bar. Green Fish doesn’t offer cold-pressed juice, rather, the fruits and veggies are pressed to order. Again, you can design your own juice (choose up to six ingredients, $4.99 for 16 ounces or $5.99 for 24 ounces) or order a blend, such as the Green Dream (cucumber, celery, kale, lime, ginger, apple) or the Eye Opener (carrot, apple, orange, beet, cucumber, lemon).

Poppin’ off: Consider the Pop Up Truck the anti-food truck. Instead of a deep fryer, Alex Shragg and Matt Brown stock their truck, which launched last month, with fresh,

seasonal ingredients and a menu that changes weekly.

It also has a pop-up mentality.

Shragg says they plan to highlight different local products—one week, they used Preservation & Co. pickled green beans in ramen, for example—and bring on guest chefs to shake things up.

“It’s a mobile forum for creative expression in the culinary arts,” Shragg says. “We’re all about diversity and not sticking to the traditional food-truck model of buy low, sell high.”

Who are these people? Shragg is an occupational therapist and avid home cook. Brown was most recently with 58 Degrees & Holding Co. The Pop Up Truck is their extra project, and they’re having fun with the food. That means a melting pot of cooking styles. Already, they’ve dished out pork bao, handmade pastas and gumbo.

Red Rabbit’s Thom Collins ($9) is made with Old Tom gin that has, according to the menu, “been exposed exclusively to the music of Radiohead” and then muddled with lemon, sugar and soda water. Based on that I wasn’t sure I’d like it, to be honest, as I’m in the minority of those who prefer the band’s 1993 debut Pablo Honey over its later, artier fare. This take on the classic drink, however, exhibits a bracing and refreshing tart sweetness without any trace of tortured mopiness. Springy spears AspArAgus Nothing says spring more than the first signs of asparagus. The spears are already shooting up around here. (Thanks, global warming!) The Delta region leads the country in farming these prehistoriclooking veggies. As the weather warms, they’ll grow so fast you can practically watch them lengthen. The term “sports bar” can make you think “loud TVs and louder customers.” Luckily, the resurrected Joe Marty’s Bar & Grille is an oldfashioned sports bar. Yes, there are plenty of televisions, but Little Leaguers are welcome and there’s some history to learn.

Local baseball legend Joe Marty—he played for the San Francisco Seals with Joe DiMaggio—opened his namesake bar in 1938.

It grew into a fusty old space, eventually destroyed by a fire in 2005. More than 10 years later, two local businessmen reopened the venue to recapture some nostalgia for the favorite community gathering spot.

The iconic baseballthemed neon sign remains, but the interior got cleaned up and well-stocked with noteworthy memorabilia, some of it salvaged from the original bar. One wall holds Land Park’s old Dooley Field scoreboard, while one of Marty’s vintage jerseys lives behind the bar.

Service is mostly lunch and dinner, with breakfast on weekends.

The menu isn’t pushing any boundaries, but there are some standout items. There are lots of good local beers on tap, too.

Starters include standard salty, crunchy things like fries and Parmesan pretzel bites ($4.95 each).

Slightly more unusual are the street tacos ($2.50 each). The soft corn tortillas are stuffed with in-house pulled pork, and garnished with tomatillo salsa and radishes. They’re simple but wellexecuted, with juice oozing from the tender meat.

The oblong grilled flatbread ($5.95) is another good choice. A supple hand-formed bread holds thinly sliced Fuji apples, herb aioli, crispy bacon and blue cheese crumbles. The sweet and salty components balance well, and make for an excellent pairing with Track 7 Brewing Co.’s Bee Line Blonde ($6).

Entrees skew, unsurprisingly, toward things in buns. One night, we ordered the special broasted chicken ($10.95), a holdover from the original Joe Marty’s. Broasting is a ’50s era technique of deep-frying under pressure, producing somewhat crispy, if not exactly crunchy, chicken. It has retro appeal if you enjoyed the original version, but it didn’t impress us much.

Conversely, we really liked the pulled pork sandwich ($10.50) on a custom sourdough roll from the Bread Store. As with the tacos, the pork is plenty juicy, this time beneath a tangy applejalapeño slaw. It holds just the right amount of sauce so the bun maintains its integrity. The side salad oddly features giant rings of red onion that might work better on the sandwich.

Considering the farm-to-fork ethos of today’s restaurants, the salads underperform. The spicy chicken ($11.95) is the most interesting, with chopped romaine, fried tortilla strips and blue cheese. As advertised, the chicken packs heat but also just seems to be coated in hot sauce, which overwhelms all the other ingredients.

Joe Marty’s is familyfriendly, so children can order either a hot dog ($6.50) or sourdough grilled cheese ($5.50) with fries. Both hit the sweet spot of pleasing kids but also being high quality, with nice grill marks on the dog and good cheese in the sandwich.

If you plan to grab a bite while watching a game, consult the website, which features a helpful calendar of game times and events. Indeed, Joe Marty’s is doing perfectly well for a sports bar, but it’s not a destination spot. However, the place holds a lot of memories for many people.

It’s worth a visit to embrace its long history and local roots, and root on the home team. Ω

Spotlight on salad

by Shoka It would be irresponsible to withhold that Veg Cafe & Bar’s salad not only outshines other salads in town, but even as a side, it steals the spotlight from the entree. That’s not to say that the new vegetarian eatery’s (2413 J Street, second floor) main dishes aren’t notable; the food is prepared with an ayurvedic approach, so whether it’s the curry or a veg burger, everything is seasoned delicately yet satisfyingly. Especially the salad. The colorful, fulfilling plate

has a mix of whatever is in season in raw, roasted and quick-pickle form— like arugula, beets, squash, Brussels sprouts or tangy carrots. Every bite turns out to be a new discovery, and the mix of ingredients tastes intentional, balanced. Oh, is that fennel?

Why, yes, it is. More salads should be like this. Bask in the natural light from the second-floor windows and feel warm on the inside, too—yes, from a salad.

It is an interesting time to live in Sacramento, as the city is in the midst of a cultural and entrepreneurial revitalization.

Gerwig, perhaps best known for her roles in Frances Ha (pictured) and Mistress America, is currently at work on directing her first feature, Lady Bird, which takes place in Sacramento.

The summit’s other two main speakers are Jay Sales, an innovation strategist who works at VSP Global and The Shop, companies that deal with the intersection of fashion and health; and Rob Stewart, a reporter, producer and PBS host for Rob On The Road. The Book of Mormon is every bit as profane, profound and insanely funny as you’d expect a play by the creators of South Park to be. Trey Parker and Matt Stone, with an assist from Robert Lopez (co-creator of Avenue Q), have delivered a divine musical comedy.

The story takes place at that time in every young male Mormon’s life when he begins his two-year mission. Two by two, these “elders” travel via bike to their assigned destinations to share the word and recruit members to the faith. The two elders at the center of this story (Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, played by Billy Harrigan Tighe and A.J. Holmes, respectively), don’t exactly get a plum assignment. They are sent to Uganda, which is nothing like Orlando, Fla., which Elder Price had prayed for and nothing at all like The Lion King, which Elder Cunningham had hoped.

In addition to satirizing Mormonism, the show does a number on any number of other belief systems. But that’s not all: The Book of Mormon savages the so-called “savages” of the host country, ripping African culture, AIDS, female genital mutilation, warlords and more—and it does so grossly, crudely—but hilariously.

The Book of Mormon is, for all intents and purposes, sold out, but a lottery for $25 tickets will be held starting two-and-a-half hours before each performance. Ω

4 The Shadow Box

Resurrection Theatre’s production of Michael Cristofer’s Pulitzer- and Tony-winning play The Shadow Box is a many-tissue journey through life, grief and impending death. Not only did many members of the audience get teary-eyed on the show’s opening night while watching how three people in hospice care and their loved ones deal with the inevitable—some cast members were so emotionally committed to their characters that they had tears freely flowing down their checks.

The play takes place in three cottages on hospital grounds, each one housing a terminal patient. Here, the important people in their lives have gathered for goodbyes and the play explores the pain and privileges as well as the confrontations and avoidances of saying goodbye. It also presents philosophical ponderings on the meaning of life, love and mere human existence.

The play is heady and emotional, unveiling three different stories that have aches of recognition for those who have dealt with the challenges, anger, anguish and sometimes peace that death can bring. Both the play and the performances by the Resurrection Theatre’s cast are powerful.

The three cottages house such different stories— the first one is middle-aged man whose wife refuses to deal with his looming demise; the second one is a triangle of a man, his ex-wife and current lover; while the third is the relationship between an elderly dementia patient and her ever-patient daughter. It’s this third story that resonates the strongest—both in the storyline and through the raw and painful performances by Janet Motenko and Adrienne Sher.

A mentally unstable mercenary (Ryan Reynolds) undergoes experimental surgery for his cancer; it leaves him with advanced healing abilities, but so hideously ugly that he goes underground, allowing his girlfriend (Morena Baccarin) to think he’s dead while he seeks revenge on his doctor (Ed Skrein). Oh, and for reasons too contrived to go into, he takes the name “Deadpool.” The jokes in this foul-mouthed super-anti-hero movie begin with the credits— instead of actors’ names we get “British Villain,” “CGI Character,” “Comic Relief,” etc. Some of the jokes in Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick’s script are pretty funny, which helps compensate for the dreary familiarity of the CGI fight scenes.

Tim Miller’s direction is flat, but he keeps things moving. J.L.

Gods of Egypt

In a conspicuously pale-skinned ancient Egypt, 10-foot tall, shape-shifting deities walk amongst the mortals. Favored son and ribald god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) prepares to ascend to the throne when he’s maimed and exiled by his father’s power-mad brother Set (Gerard Butler); meanwhile, a resourceful human thief (Brenton Thwaites) tries to retrieve his dead wife from the underworld. Smeary, cartoonish, largely unimaginative CGI special effects wash over every single shot of director and cowriter Alex Proyas’ dopey spectacular, while the performances are a bizarre mixed bag. Butler is crazy bad as the villainous Set, and it feels like Thwaites’ mop-topped thief wandered in from a community theater performance of Xanadu, but Geoffrey Rush was born to play Ra, the Egyptian sun god. The film is so ridiculously awful that it threatens to bend back into compelling camp, but the end result is just too excruciating to be entertaining. D.B.

Hail, Caesar!

Josh Brolin stars in Hail, Caesar! as Eddie Mannix, a 1950s studio executive known for his ability to protect his stars and manipulate the press. Mannix is loosely based on the real-life MGM “fixer” of the same name, and as a series of disconnected scenes skewering old Hollywood, Joel and Ethan Coen’s film is a blast. Unfortunately, there’s no center to hold the disparate pieces together. We never connect with Mannix as a character, and the film moves in stops and starts, with the pace severely lagging between showstopping sequences. A lot of scenes work as ideas, but not as scenes, especially the ones involving a cabal of Communist screenwriters. There are still those welcome touches of Coen acidity, and as an examination of the post-war hypocrisy of Hollywood, the fantasyland of Hail, Caesar! is ten thousand times more righteous than the based-on-fact Trumbo.

But as a Coen brothers’ movie, it’s just OK. D.B.

London Has Fallen

Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is with the president (Aaron Eckhart) when a trip to London for the prime minister’s funeral erupts in a massive terrorist strike; several world leaders get their tickets elaborately punched, but it’ll take more than a few hundred terrorists to get past Banning. The inevitable sequel to 2013’s guilty pleasure Olympus has Fallen doubles down on the guilt while losing the pleasure in sadistic monotony and narrative confusion. The new director, Babak Najafi, fails to replicate the gritty style with which Antoine Fuqua infused the original—either that or he doesn’t even try. Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Radha Mitchell and Robert Forster also return from before, all overqualified and underused. J.L.

Written by Josh Campbell, Matthew Steucken and Damien Chazelle and directed by Dan Trachtenberg, this is a horror movie with a difference: It’s genuinely horrifying, not just “scary.” In fact, cheap scares are few, replaced by a mounting sense of dread and foreboding that gnaws at the pit of the stomach. Acting is excellent, including John Gallagher Jr. as Winstead’s fellow inmate. Depending on your perspective, the resolution is either a brilliant twist or a monumental howler; suffice it to say that just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you. J.L.

This adaptation of Beam’s memoir has strong performances, particularly by Garner and Rogers, to compensate for what might have been a slew of fatal drawbacks: a too-chipper atmosphere of sun-splashed wholesomeness, a leaden pace from director Patricia Riggen that takes forever to get around to showing things we’ve already seen in the preview trailer, an irrelevant time-wasting cameo by Queen Latifah and a kitschy-koo Candy Land vision of heaven. A simple monologue by Rogers would have been more effective; the kid could have handled it. J.L.

Triple 9

After a striking debut with The Proposition, Australian director John Hillcoat has settled into a gruff, deadly serious competence. Triple 9 is Hillcoat’s third grimly serviceable film in a row, following The Road and Lawless, although he’s once again put together a shockingly good cast. Four Oscar-nominated actors (Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Casey Affleck and Woody Harrelson) and a supporting team of excellent character actors and promising talent (Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Gal Gadot, Clifton Collins Jr., Michael Kenneth Williams) assemble for a film that is the dictionary definition of “wait for VOD.” Dirty Atlanta cops in too deep with the Russian mob pull off increasingly dangerous bank heists, while a wide-eyed rookie (Affleck) and his dogged but drug-addled uncle (Harrelson, having fun) threaten to blow the deal. The heist scenes are handled well, but the good cop/bad cop stuff feels rote. D.B.

The Witch

Writer-director Robert Eggers makes a shockingly self-assured feature debut with the terrifying “New England Folk Tale” of The Witch. A soul-withering, vaguely sexual slow creep in the vein of Under the Skin, only with all of the dialogue spoken in spot-on Old English, The Witch feels authentic both as Pilgrim anthropology and as a waking nightmare.

In a tenuously settled American territory in the 17th century, a family of fundamentalists gets exiled from the commonwealth, forced to the edge of the forest for taking the popular religious doctrine too far. The father refuses to compromise his extreme beliefs about sin, tak-

ing his gospel to the freedom of the wilderness, but it’s not long before hunger, isolation, paranoia and supernatural terror tear the family apart. Undeniably disturbing and strangely elegant, The Witch creates its horror with such care that the film may be over before you realize it’s a tour-de-force genre classic. D.B.

Zootopia

Director Cyrus Nowrasteh and co-writer Betsy Giffen Nowrasteh (adapting Anne Rice’s 2005 novel Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt) speculate about the life of the 7-year-old Jesus (Adam Greaves-Neal), whose family is making its way back from Egypt to Palestine, while Mary and Joseph (Sara Lazzaro, Vincent Walsh) wonder how to tell the boy that … well, I guess you’d say, in a way, he’s adopted. Meanwhile, King Herod (Jonathan Bailey) hears rumors of some kid raising people from the dead and sends a Roman centurion (Sean Bean) to look into it.

There are a couple of good scenes—Jesus fielding questions from priests in the Jerusalem temple, and facing a demonic tempter only he can see (Rory Keenan)—but mostly the movie is simply dull, emotionally flat and so solemnly reverent that it’s dramatically inert. J.L.

Aside from a couple of over-the-moon box office smashes in recent years, Disney Animation has become a runner-up within its own studio. Disney churns out the occasional please-all-masters hit like Frozen or Wreck-It Ralph, but Pixar turns out classics. Pixar has set a high bar for films about anthropomorphized critters, inanimate objects, artificial intelligences and abstract concepts, too high for a harmless but only marginally clever time-filler like Zootopia to fully hurdle. Creaky animal puns aren’t going to cut it. Zootopia is like the baseline version of a Disney effort—crisp animation, an intriguing lead character and a wafer-thin story, all in service of a presumably ennobling message of acceptance. Zootopia springs from an extremely low-grade high-concept premise: What if animals were like people? End of premise. D.B.

Time is strange Freak show: Wild-haired, wild-eyed Anton Barbeau either charmed or freaked out everyone at his recordrelease party, as he does.

“I’m glad you’re in a good mood tonight because it’s a fucking terrible start,” he said, fumbling around with his loop pedal. Beep.

Boop. Beep. Boop. “It’s all my fault, and I’m saying that in a Christ-like way.”

The Jesus comparisons continued. So did the eccentric monologues and digressions. He treated us to his thoughts on jazz, his fake British accent, his failed plan to become a stoner band and his amazing green gnome hat. Watching Barbeau, a Sacramento scene staple of the ’80s and ’90s, felt like communicating with someone who speaks a different language, with amusingly bizarre, mistranslated bits. But again, that’s nothing new.

New is Barbeau’s new record, Magic Act. It’s very Barbeau, in a good way: surreal, sometimes silly lyrics—see “Heavy Psychedelic Toilet” and “Black Lemon Sauce”—with swirling guitar, spacey jams and a David Bowie vibe. Some songs are speedy, catchy and pure pop; others a little more fuzzy and experimental.

But the most magical part is how cohesive it sounds as a whole, given Barbeau’s collaboration with musicians across the globe, all via the Internet.

Currently, Barbeau lives in Berlin, Germany. He’s still got a strong Sacramento fan base, evidenced by the crowd that filled up Shine last week and bobbed along to old tunes, like “Banana Song,” which saw Barbeau unsuccessfully begging everyone to sing “banana” a simply unreasonable number of times. It was a little awkward—seriously, “banana” is just an awkward word—but I greatly enjoyed the song’s marriage advice: “Let’s wait until we’re mature and financially solid.”

Karla Kane of opening band the Corner Laughers and Sacramento’s Allyson Seconds joined Barbeau on stage for a few tunes, along with his three-piece backing band, named Kenny.

“In this age of Imagine Dragons, Kenny is a fucking great band name,” Barbeau said.

What a birthday: Local musician Joseph Kojima Gray celebrated his 45th

year on Earth with a show at Old Ironsides Saturday, featuring four of his bands. That means he was on stage from 9:30 p.m. until well after midnight. And it turned out, as he informed the crowd during the 50 Watt Heavy set, that his actual birthday wasn’t until after midnight anyway.

50 Watt Heavy was the headlining band, which made sense. It’s his current and the most well-known group, mixing hard-edged riffs and roots music into a tight rock ’n’ roll package. It was impressive how much energy Gray still had for 50 Watt Heavy, considering he had just finished three consecutive sets.

More interesting was seeing the how elements of each of his other bands influenced 50 Watt Heavy’s Americana sound.

Regards, one of Gray’s defunct bands, opened the night. Songs were heavily soaked in rowdy honky-tonk, with a hard-driving rock energy. Danny Morris and the California All Stars, one of his still active bands, played after with a more traditional easygoing country sound, complete with a steel pedal player—the kind of music that inspires line dancing. In fact, it did inspire some rowdy dancing.

Right before 50 Watt Heavy’s set, the Regulars took the stage for their first show in seven years. They played Big Star-influenced ’70s power-pop, with an emphasis on larger than life rock ’n’ roll anthems.

All the while, Gray switched from singing to guitar to bass to drums and back again. By the time 50 Watt Heavy took the stage, not only was it clear that Gray has the stamina of a musician half his age, but he’s also a diverse player with skills on every rock ’n’ roll instrument. Can’t wait for the big 50th birthday bash.

People come to dance and sing along to easygoing country riffs, sassy strings, rowdy harmonica and smooth, floaty lyrics that don’t need a lot of thought to enjoy. Mars and the Massacre’s 2014 brutal album Blackout is actually kind of tame compared to their wild, psychedelic live shows. LA Weekly named them the best live band of 2014 for good reason. They PSyCH-RoCk take moody, tripped-out garage rock and turn it into an explosive performance. What’s more, they have a lot of range and even know how to dazzle with their use of samplers and looping stations, giving their rock ‘n’ roll lineup an extra layer of awesomeness. This event pairs the San Francisco Symphony with a screening of the film in what is sure to be one of Mondavi’s highlights of the year. I was talking with a friend in Colorado and he told me that another pot festival was just recently denied permission to organize its event. Why is Colorado having so many issues with these types of events compared to California?

—Michael It’s funny. In some ways, it is easier to throw a festival when weed is illegal. It can be seen as a sort of protest, like the Ann Arbor Hash Bash or the Seattle Hempfest. Thousands of people show up and put a cloud in the air, the cops can’t arrest everyone, and people are mostly left alone to smoke weed and have a great nonviolent time. Things get a little fuzzy when marijuana is just another drug. Anti-smoking ordinances tend to treat tobacco and marijuana in the same way, and for some strange reason, many city officials would rather have beerfests (because we all know alcohol users are never violent or out of control) than a pot party.

The High Times Cannabis Cup Has been a successful event in Denver for more than 10 years. However, it seems like the good people of Denver don’t want 35,000 goodnatured people spending money on hotel rooms and restaurants, because weed is bad or something. Part of this is because prohibitionists are dumb, and part of this is because High Times has a bad rep for not cleaning up after the event. Fortunately, San Bernardino has kinda become the unofficial home of large cannabis festivals. The High Times Cup was just there in January, and it looks like it will be there again in April.

San Bernardino also hosted the Chalice California event in 2015, although I think Chalice is looking for a new location this year.

As for Colorado, I don’t know what to tell you. That city’s loss is California’s gain. I would like to thank the city of San Bernardino for being cool about adult cannabis users and I would suggest that you and your friend get tickets for the San Bernardino event (www.cannabiscup.com/socal/#info-). —RCLE 2019 would be a weird year for cannabis legalization. Right now, California has a 50-50 chance. Sean Parker’s Adult Use of Marijuana Act has money and is gaining steam. There were some internet stories floating around about a company named KUSH donating $1 million to the Marijuana Control, Legalization and Revenue Act, but the “money” turned out to be stock with a value of maybe 5 cents a share and no real legal backing. We will see if the AUMA can convince the squares (and all the growers in the Emerald Triangle) to get support for 62 pages of regulations. Ω

works exclusively with an unusual medium: soot from candles and torches. He spreads the stuff across a blank canvas, then uses various instruments to sculpt the accidental blobs into definitive forms. I’ve seen the results, and they’re both well-done and intriguing. What would be the metaphorical equivalent, in your world, of using soot to make beautiful and interesting things? TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Carl Sagan said that

science thrives on “two seemingly contradictory attitudes: an openness to new ideas, no matter how bizarre or counterintuitive, and the most ruthless skeptical scrutiny of all ideas, old and new.” Whether or not you are a scientist, Taurus, I recommend that you practice this approach in the coming weeks. rich Nietzsche’s book Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the hero is having a conversation with himself.

Here are a few potential substitutes for “push our buttons”: “tweak our manias” … “prank our obsessions” … “glitter-bomb our biases” … “squeeze our phobias” … “badger our compulsions” … “seduce our repressions” … “prick our dogmas.”

Whichever expression you prefer, Leo, find a graceful way to embrace your fate: Your current job is unconditional love. The job of everyone else in your life is to tweak your manias and prick your dogmas.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “I’ll make love when

Borrowed notes If he’s being honest, Buddy Hale’s first instrument was an air guitar. His wife Rachel Freund, on the other hand, received a broken-down clarinet from her mom. Years later, the couple, who perform together in the local band Separate Spines, now want to give other musicians (beginning or otherwise) better opportunities. That’s the idea behind their Library of MusicLandria, which allows people to check out various instruments as well as recording and gig equipment. The library operates out of the couple’s Land Park home and comprises rows of shelves packed with gear. Hale and Freund took time on a recent rainy evening to discuss plans to turn MusicLandria into a full-time nonprofit and its future as the Uber of instruments.

How did this start?

Hale: I was always interested in business, but I had no idea what I wanted to do with it and thought I should just do accounting because that’s just the most practical thing.

But, my heart just wasn’t into that. I was living in Berkeley for a while and there was a toollending library there and that was a great resource. Eventually … the idea of having some kind of library that was music-related just kind of happened.

How do you apply?

Hale: It’s easy, you just provide your name and your address and your proof of address.

You sign something saying you can only check them out for so long—basically saying you’ll be liable for any damages.

Checkout time?

Hale: Right now it’s two weeks for most of the items but we’re learning, more and more, that as we lend stuff out is that different

items should have different checkout lengths.

Keyboards are two weeks, guitars are two weeks. You can renew stuff up to three times because we realize that certain instruments aren’t something you can learn really fast.

Are there are overdue fines?

Hale: Yeah, it depends on the item; if it’s something that’s in high demand or rare, then it’s $5 a day. For other smaller items like a cable or an effect pedal, it’s like a dollar a day.

What did you start out with?

Hale: We had 100 items, mostly things I’d collected over my course of being a musician; I just donated it all. There were keyboards, drum sets, guitars, basses, effect pedals, lighting, P.A. systems. Now, it’s closer to 200. Some of it needs maintenance, so we’ve been accepting donations and not everything we accept is in perfect working order. We have a part in the garage that’s sort of turning into a workshop area where repairs happen and even modifications.

So, there are also things for recording and live performances?

Hale: Yeah, people check them out a lot.

They’re P.A. speakers, really good quality, it’s one of the most common things people check out. And we have stage lighting, so if you want to do a deejay set. …

You have a lot of guitars in the other room—is this all taking over your life?

How do you solicit donations?

Hale: We just started saying, “Hey, we’re here, if you have any musical instruments sitting in your closet we’d love to add them to our catalog.” We’ve also done a small handful of instrument drives; we’ll reach out to bands that are playing concerts and ask if we can have a presence there and basically do the same thing but ask them, “Hey, if you bring an instrument to donate we’ll get you into the show for free.”

It’s like the Uber of instruments.

Hale: (Laughs.) It hasn’t exploded as much as that but the people who use it like the idea of the sharing economy and I do, too.

Dream instrument?

Hale: It was 25 feet long. I was going to get a warehouse space for it. I was the second person in line to get it and I just waited a little too long. I just want the scope to be really diverse—I just want a ton of musical instruments so people can really explore.

Significance of the name?

Hale: It’s based off the Library of Alexandria, a lost library that’s supposed to be the largest library that ever existed. It disappeared; no one knows where it went.
