Día de los Muertos bridges life and death

I

BY KATE GONZALES

f there is one takeaway from the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos, it is to embrace something everyone must face: death.

INSIDE

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is the celebration of life and death held Nov. 1 and 2, when souls are said to visit their loved ones here on Earth for one night. It is the chance each year to dance, dine and reconnect with the dead. “It’s really based on indigenous beliefs of life and death being a continuum,” says Marie Acosta, artistic and executive director of Latino Center of Art and Culture. Traditionally, overnight gatherings are held at the grave sites of the deceased. In Sacramento, a growing number of organizations host Día de los Muertos events in graveyards, as well as galleries,

parking lots and other sites around the city. No matter the setting, the purpose is the same: to welcome the dead home with vibrance and jubilation. “There’s a lot of color and a lot of music and community,” says Acosta. People construct beautiful altars, or “ofrendas,” where they place photos of the dead and welcome them with offerings of “pan” (bread) and other food, water or alcohol, and some earthly possessions the departed treasured. Strong incense called copal is lit and music is played so the souls of the dead can find their way home. This weekend, opportunities to experience this rich cultural tradition will take place throughout the region. An array of Halloween events will also be happening, so why not celebrate both holidays? Read on to find out how you can party with the living and honor the dead this weekend.

is grandmother waking early to make tortillas and fry bread for him every day before he went to school. A childhood Christmas morning in Arizona with his sister. The time his Native American grandfather grabbed a rattlesnake with his bare hands to save the children from a deadly strike. While others may just see skulls and bones, these are the things Sacramento-based artist John S. Huerta sees when he looks at his paintings: the stuff of life. A longtime multimedium visual artist who now works mostly with acrylic, Huerta has focused for the past eight years or so on painting interpretations of the tradition of

“calacas,” or skeletons, associated with the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos. Huerta’s paintings feature vibrant, contrasting colors and figures with elaborately detailed decoration. Some of his portraits are of flesh-and-blood men and women with their faces painted in the traditional sugar skull style. Others are elegantly dressed skeletons, seemingly living it up long after death. The faces that grace his paintings are the same as those that intimately color his memories: his aunt, grandmother, sister, close friends. He’s also painted iconic figures like Audrey Hepburn and pop singer Selena as calacas. For Huerta, making death the focus of his art is ultimately life-affirming. “Everything that’s impacted my life, I try to put it into my art. And the appreciation for what [loved ones] have done in our lives and to others’,” he says.

He began painting in this style following the unexpected loss of his sister, Rosemary Hernandez, when she was only 36. Rosa, as he called her, was his only sibling. She had Down syndrome, and he believes she was unable to effectively communicate how ill she felt, leading to her death from complications of gallbladder disease. Then, only eight months later, Huerta lost his grandmother, who was “Mom” to him after the death of his biological mother when he was age 4. Huerta found himself suddenly stripped of the nuclear family he’d grown up with. The losses unmoored him. He struggled with anger and depression and turned to drinking. Then, one day, he says he felt the spiritual presence of his grandmother. “My [grandmother’s] voice was telling me, ‘Just stop. Stop what you’re doing and stop hurting yourself. Just get focused on your art,’” he says.

“ E verything that’s impacted my life, I try to put it into my art.” John S. Huerta // Local artist

So he poured his grief, but also his love for those he’d lost, into his work. In painting the faces of his sister and grandmother, and other loved ones both living and dead, he is able to honor and preserve their memories, as well as find a way through his pain, he says. “I used to be terrified of death,” Huerta says. “And I think now … once you leave here, you go somewhere else, spiritually. It’s part of life: you live, and you die.” You can see works by John S. Huerta, as well as California artists Francisco Franco, David Lozeau, Rob-O and Mary Southall, at The California Museum’s exhibit Day of the Dead: Art of Día de los Muertos 2015 through Jan. 3, 2016. www.californiamuseum.org/dia-delos-muertos-2015-0

ast weekend, a ghastly and jubilant crowd peddled through the streets of midtown, stopping off at local haunts along the way. Zombies and ghosts, friends and families came together for the second annual Day of the Dead Ride, hosted by Rolling Relics and Sacramento CycleFest. “It’s a diverse crowd and it’s friendly,” says Dianna Bennett, who dressed in a red and black Day of the Dead costume for the ride. “Fun times, lots of cool bikes, great people.” The festive ride kicked off at Suzie Burger on Saturday “It’s really fun to take afternoon and riders stops for over the streets with enjoyed drinks and snacks hundreds of bikes.” at Centro Cocina Mexicana, Tequila Kristine Olsen // Day of the Museo Mayahuel, Dead Ride participant Beach Hut Deli, Vallejo’s Restaurant, Mango’s Burgertown and Azul Mexican Food & Tequila Bar. “It brings families together … out to enjoy the evening,” says Ted Florez, Sacramento CycleFest promoter. Florez says he enjoys seeing old and new friends come together to celebrate the holiday and support local businesses. “It’s a positive thing for everybody,” he says. In years past, the event was celebrated as a Halloween ride. Last year it was promoted as a Day of the Dead ride, and about 250 people came out for the fun. What brought Sacramento resident Kristine Olsen out for the ride? “The sense of community,” she says. “It’s really fun to take over the streets with hundreds of bikes. I love to see how everyone else decorates their bikes.” If you missed it this year, be sure to mark your calendar and join the fun in 2016. Training wheels, beach cruisers, mountain bikes — all are welcome. “It’s good to see everybody on a bicycle,” says Florez. “We have unicycles. We have Brian Clifton (top) and Amy Rodriguez (bottom) people who ... come out in the motorized chairs. participated in last weekend’s second annual Day It’s a range of everybody. It’s a positive vibe.” of the Dead Ride.
