Race issues everywhere On July 14, the NAACP accused my colleagues and me of “racially biased news coverage,” and of publishing racist illustrations of the mayor.

That evening, I rode home on light rail—along 12th Street, past the arena construction site. I take this ride often, and I’m frequently the only white person on the train—as was true that evening.

On Thursday, I flew to a conference in Salt Lake City, where the big discussion was about how journalism is too white—and getting whiter.

A day later, a colleague from Florida explained to me that, because of oppressive “new Jim Crow” laws, more than 30 percent of blacks in that state are denied the right to vote, mostly due to nonviolent crimes or drug offenses. This will have a major impact on next year’s election. And these laws are, of course, not unique to the Sunshine State.

On Saturday night, I rode the light-rail train in Salt Lake. It brimmed with passengers, nearly 100 percent of them white.

Sunday afternoon, I was back in Sacramento at a barbecue. My cousin, an actual living, breathing supporter of Donald Trump for president, tried to persuade me that the government needs to build a wall along the Mexican border. At all costs. Later, an uncle confessed to me that he can’t wait for “that man” to get out of the White House.

And finally, this past Monday night, I spent two hours at the local NAACP headquarters, listening to people’s stories, and how they were offended by our illustration of K.J. I’ll admit that I was cynical heading into the meeting.

But when it was over, I was inspired (read about this on page 11).

Why am I sharing all of this? Not sure. I’m definitely not here to “whitesplain” racism, or to pretend that I have answers.

After Monday night, I do know that talking helps. So let’s keep the dialogue going.

In defense of pot Re “Pot and pregnancy” (SN&R Editorial, July 16): Regarding the use of cannabis by pregnant mothers: There is research on this topic. It just fails to show any harm, so more research is required to find the elusive harm proclaimed by the prohibitionists.

Re SN&R’s “K.J. sues SN&R!” cover (July 9 issue): Although “racism” is often in the eyes of the beholder, my eyes don’t see it.

As a one-time Latino community activist, I’ve kept my eyes and ears attuned to possible slights to my community. I’ve manifested anger and distress on those occasions Latinos have been portrayed negatively by those with suspect (racist?) agendas.

Although I haven’t followed the entirety of SN&R’s coverage of the mayor’s office, I’ve seen nothing to suggest that anyone at SN&R has insidious, or otherwise racist, motivations.

The overreaction of the local NAACP, I’m afraid, will be perceived by many as a transparent attempt to stifle scrutiny of a black politician. Community activists of color should be concerned that these types of overreactions will detract from the significant issues that still confront us, and diminish the credibility of those with legitimate grievances.

Parking nightmare Major changes in Sacramento could mean higher prices, stiffer restrictions Parking in the central city is going to get more expensive and restrictive, if a number of proposed changes make it past the Sacramento City by Council next month, SN&R has learned.

“This may very well be violative of [state and local statutes],” said Eye on Sacramento President Craig Powell, echoing concerns raised by the Sacramento Taxpayers Association.

Specifically, the draft plan calls for scrapping the 6 p.m. start time for free parking on city streets and shifting it much later, to 2 a.m. The reduction of daily free parking hours from 19 to six would also be extended throughout the week, eradicating the amnesty parking that city dwellers have become used to on Sundays, according to a city Parking Meter Program & Rate Briefing that was obtained by SN&R. The briefing says the changes are intended to encourage motorists to use the parking garage as “a less expensive, long-term option” and increase turnover at the meters, which it says “should be used as a short-term parking option.”

A storm of criticism erupted shortly after SN&R revealed the details of the proposal last week. Hundreds of commenters decried the possible changes—which have yet to be formally proposed—on SN&R’s blog and Facebook wall, as well as on Sacramento’s subReddit forum.

City parking officials declined to be interviewed about what they consider a stilldeveloping plan. “We should have the details finalized in a few weeks prior to going to Council,” Marycon Razo, a spokeswoman in the city manager’s office, wrote in an email.

She added that the city was still in the process of vetting ideas and conducting outreach.

Parking officials have already shared their plans with business groups in Old Sacramento, downtown and Midtown.

Valerie Mamone-Werder, the senior manager of business development at the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, said City Parking Manager Matt Eierman presented to DSP’s board of directors on July 15. She said Eierman explained that the council will be asked to cast its support behind two specific proposals, 8

including a rate increase that will bump up meter prices by 50 cents an hour, to $1.75—or 35 cents per 12 minutes.

The second action item that could be decided is a proposed pilot program called Special Parking Over Time, or SPOT, she said. The “dynamic pricing model” would allow city residents and visitors to extend their hours of parking beyond the metered limit of two hours, as long as they’re willing to pay premiums of up to 25 percent.

Mamone-Werder described her board’s feedback as largely positive, though it hasn’t taken a formal position. “We’re really excited,” she said, adding that parking rates hadn’t moved since 2008.

More suspect of the timing was Powell, who characterized the pitch to raise parking revenues as a backdoor ploy to finance the arena. “It’s sort of the golden goose that’s going to make them well,” he said of anticipated parking monies.

The city hasn’t exactly tried to hide this.

According to what’s called a comprehensive annual financial report that the city files each year, the city’s share of the Entertainment and Sports Center is $223 million. Approximately $5.5 million of that will come directly from the city’s parking fund. But in reality, that fund will be tapped even deeper.

Most of what the city owes toward the arena is being covered by lease-revenue bonds the city says are backed by its general fund. Once issuance and interest costs are factored in, those bonds are anticipated to cost the city between $298 million and $325 million, significantly more than the city’s stated cash contribution to the arena.

According to the same financial report, the city pledges to cover its annual debtservice payments on these bonds through three sources.

One of them is parking program revenues.

Net parking revenues have already been creeping up over the past decade, from $2.3 million in 2005 to $3.4 million last year, according to city financial documents. The city has done this by spending less on parking operations and keeping more of the money it pulls in through fees and citations, which numbered 171,000 last year.

The city spent approximately $15.2 million on parking operations last fiscal year. That’s the smallest investment since 2006, when the city spent $14 million on parking operations—and also represents a steady, if incremental, decline since 2010.

Powell contends the city is restricted

by Proposition 26 and its own city code from using parking revenues on nonparking-related programs and costs.

The reason the law was enacted was because too many cities started using meter money to balance their budgets.

“You just can’t raise taxes through parking meter rates,” he said.

While readers were angered over these proposals after SN&R broke news of them last week, Powell said he’s known of them for years.

He said City Treasurer Russell Fehr briefed him on the city’s long-term parking revenue strategies before a term sheet agreement was in place with the Kings ownership group. And Powell says there are more changes coming, like expanding the number of neighborhoods where permitted parking is required, and adding more meters where there currently are none.

“It’s outrageous and I think it’s just the beginning,” he said.

While permits are free for residents to obtain, the city can ticket nonresidents who park in those spots.

The city briefing actually anticipates some of these moves. Under a section titled “Controlled Parking,” it states, “Currently there are hundreds of parking spaces within the Central City that have no parking restrictions. Each parking space within the central [sic] City shall have controls on them. Controlled parking could include time zones, Residential Parking zone or parking meters.”

As far as Mamone-Werder knows, council members won’t be asked to decide on that next month. But they could vote on a “dynamic pricing model” that would be tried out in Midtown and Old Sacramento for a period of 90 days. Here’s how it works: Anyone parking at meters in those zones will still pay the new market rate of $1.75 for hours one and two. If someone wanted to keep the space for a third hour, they would have to pay $3. For every additional hour after that, the space would cost $3.75.

The city’s planning to change its parking rules just as new scratch is needed to finance the Kings arena. Critics question this timing— and whether the changes are legal.

People would be able to purchase these additional hours at the meter or through a mobile app, the briefing states.

Mamone-Werder said the idea is to ultimately expand these zones throughout the central city.

Parking officials are also expected to seek council input on additional proposals.

They include the implementation of an “event pricing model” for on-street parking when the new downtown arena opens next summer, the briefing states. In effect, the closer someone parks to the arena during event days, the more they would pay for longer-term street parking.

The first hour of parking would still be $1.75. But if someone planned to stay longer, they would be asked to pay a flat-rate option of $15 in the zone closest to the arena; $10 in the secondary zone; and a $5 flat rate in the zone furthest from the arena.

There’s also talk of discontinuing or modifying the no-cost holiday parking hours that extend from Thanksgiving to December 25 in Midtown, downtown and Old Sacramento.

All told, meter revenue is expected to increase by 10 percent to 25 percent under these changes, the briefing says.

Midtown Business Association Executive Director Emily Baime Michaels characterized her group as preliminarily supportive of the dynamic pricing model and 50-cent bump in meter rates.

“ This may very well be violative of [state and local statutes].”

Since last Wednesday, SN&R’s Facebook wall has attracted more than a hundred negative comments from people who said the changes would keep them out of the city. “They really don’t want anyone down there, do they?” wrote a Facebook user identified as Tina Bennett.

Mamone-Werder acknowledged that the changes might raise “some immediate concerns or dissatisfaction” among consumers and local merchants, but believed those would ease as people got used to them.

“Parking has always been a challenging thing,” the former business owner said.

The discussion may have also re-energized the Sacramento Taxpayers Association, which is rebuilding under new president Katy Grimes after being “whittled down” for years, she said. “This is a huge, huge deal,” she said. “We will do something.”

Powell said his organization would also take a hard look at any proposals going before the council. “They have been getting away with this for years,” he said of the city using parking revenues to cover nonparking costs. “Well, that game is over.” Ω

The supply of mentally incompetent inmates in Sacramento County’s primary jail is primed to grow.

In June, the sheriff’s department inked a $2.1 million contract with the state that allows it to treat felony defendants in its Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center who are found mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Before, felony defendants who were deemed unfit to participate in their own defense were put on a waiting list to receive treatment at a state psychiatric hospital, where the aim is to “restore” their mental competency so they can understand their legal situation and participate in their defense. But a lack of space meant these individuals languished in jail waiting for beds to open up.

The officials behind this agreement think that, by allowing staff inside the Elk Grove custodial facility to treat these individuals directly, the defendants will ultimately spend less time in pretrial custody.

But it’s also good for the sheriff’s bottom line.

Under the revenue agreement with the California Department of State Hospitals, which goes into effect August 1, the state will pay the sheriff’s department a $377 daily per diem for each of the 16 beds dedicated to this program— whether they’re occupied or not.

After accounting for additional expenditures of about $1.5 million—including more than $1 million to UC Davis Health Services to provide that care—the department is expected to clear almost $613,000 to keep mentally incompetent defendants in-house, according to county budget documents.

On July 14, county supervisors approved an agreement between the sheriff’s department and UC Davis. A staff report says the jail program will be able to provide the same level of treatment as the state, while keeping pretrial defendants closer to their family members and attorneys.

As part of the agreement, the jail’s Correctional Health Services unit and UC Davis will track “admission, demographic, psychological and diagnostic information as well as the number of days required for the restoration of competency,” the staff report states. (Raheem F. Hosseini)

Artistic compromise After the $8 million commission New York artist Jeff Koons landed earlier this year to put … something colorful in front of the new downtown Kings arena, local artists wanted to know why they were frozen out of the process.

In response, city officials found an extra $500,000 by selling property at the southwest corner of Fair Oaks Boulevard and Howe Avenue to create a grant program that would benefit aggrieved local artists.

On Tuesday, the Sacramento City Council was scheduled to review and vote on new arts-and-culture funding policies that are billed as giving local arts organizations a leg up on the ultracompetitive commission process, where smaller and more diverse artists sometimes struggle to be recognized.

According to a city staff report, the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, which advises the council on spending for the arts, already approved the policy guidelines during an April meeting.

The staff report says the one-time injection of $500,000 will establish a multiyear Cultural Equity Grant Program, to help applicant organizations “better contribute to the cultural life of the City’s diverse, vibrant, and arts-underserved neighborhoods.”

hen 18-year-old Isis Johnson isn’t designing fashionable clothing in the comfort of her Oak Park home, she can likely be found educating her community on health and nutrition with Girls On The Rise.

A program for young women of color focused on transforming the South Sacramento community, Girls On The Rise is funded by The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities initiative: a 10-year, $1 billion plan to transform 14 challenged communities in California.

So far, Johnson and her powerful girl group have made a big difference in the South Sacramento community by doing everything from leading cooking demonstrations at Oak Park Sol Community Garden, to volunteering for nonprofit community events, including WEAVE’S Walk A Mile In Her Shoes, which raises awareness for domestic abuse and sexual assault.

“What I love the most is that whether I am doing community work by myself, or in a small group, I am making a difference,” says Johnson. “I am changing the community for the better, or starting the process of doing so.”

Our diversity problem This past Monday night, SN&R co-editors Rachel Leibrock and Nick Miller met with more than three dozen community members at the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s headquarters in Oak Park. People shared emotional, angry, thoughtful, smart and impactful stories about their lives—and why they were offended by this paper’s recent illustrations of Mayor Kevin Johnson.

“This is about a picture, about the way it depicted the AfricanAmerican male.”

“I didn’t read the article. All I saw was the picture.”

“It’s embarrassing to me, because I am from Sacramento.”

“You don’t have diversity, and I have a problem with that.”

The No. 1 lesson learned?

Journalism is too damn white.

The reason for this meeting, in case you hadn’t heard, was a press conference that the NAACP held on Thursday, July 9. At this gathering, the group characterized our illustrated depictions of Mayor Johnson as racist.

In a statement, the NAACP alleged that these images showed a “crazed and violent” mayor. They said the way he was drawn resurrected racial stereotypes from this country’s bigoted past.

How do we respond to this?

Well, it’s very clear that some people are genuinely upset and offended by the illustration. We recognize this. We hear this. This is unfortunate and regrettable.

At the same time, we appreciate the overwhelming support from the community, and those who’ve come to our defense. We stand by the work of our writers and designers here at SN&R. But we’re not going to spend this editorial rationalizing our work or explaining our intent.

What we are going to do is talk about what’s very clear after our meeting with the NAACP: SN&R has a diversity problem.

We writers and editors, designers and sales people converged on Salt Lake City—irony not lost—for the annual Association of Alternative Newsmedia gathering. But the big take-home from the meeting wasn’t tips on how to improve reporting or how to sell more ads.

The No. 1 lesson learned?

Journalism is too damn white.

The numbers don’t lie. A survey of 37 (out of 113) member publications showed that, while women and the LGBT community are very wellrepresented, our media companies employ few people of color. And our newsrooms are getting even whiter.

Of the media outlets that responded to the survey: only 12.6 percent of employees are people of color (Hispanic, black, Asian, etc.), and that number dipped from the last time AAN did the survey (in 2011, when it was 14 percent).

We don’t need to explain to you why it’s important for newsrooms to be represented by a diverse mix of people. We will explain, though, the first of hopefully many changes that will be happening at SN&R. First, co-editors Rachel and Nick would like to announce a new SN&R Diversity Internship program. Beginning next week, we will be accepting applications for paid internships in our editorial department.

Our goal for this Diversity Internship is to both inject SN&R with more voices from aspiring journalists of color, and also to prepare these writers and editors for successful careers in media. This new program is just the beginning. We enjoyed a powerful and thoughtful conversation with the community this week, and it won’t be the end of our dialogue. These issues won’t be resolved overnight.

‘Segregation’ will happen if the city ditches inclusionary housing President Barack Obama’s Department of Housing and Urban Development this month announced a new initiative to fight housing segregation in U.S. cities. The policy requires cities to look at ways of “replacing segregated living patterns with truly integrated and balanced living patterns, transforming racially and ethnically concentrated areas of poverty into areas of opportunity.”

“Segregation” is a nasty word. You don’t hear city officials use it. But even in Sacramento—which we like to remind ourselves is one of the nation’s most diverse cities—neighborhoods and schools are divided along class and color lines.

After the riots in Ferguson and Baltimore, writers revisited the history of how America’s cities became so segregated, and why segregation persists.

Ta-Nahesi Coates’ blockbuster, “The Case for Reparations,” published last year in The Atlantic, outlined the ways racist housing policy in the 20th century left African-Americans “locked out of the greatest mass-based opportunity for accumulation in American history.”

Richard Rothstein’s “The Making of Ferguson” showed how the Federal Housing Administration “financed the construction of entire segregated subdivisions,” but refused mortgages to blacks.

The political right complains that Obama’s new anti-segregation initiative is “social engineering.” They ignore that segregation was engineered in the first place, with government help.

Those patterns of racial segregation linger today, and economic segregation of neighborhoods has been getting worse for decades.

Sacramento’s inclusionary housing ordinance, adopted in 2000, was meant in part to disrupt those patterns. The inclusionary rule required that 15 percent of the new housing projects built in the city’s new-growth areas be affordable to low-income families.

The idea behind inclusionary housing is that, by building more mixed-income communities, low-income workers can live where the jobs are, poor kids could live near the good schools, families of modest means could buy homes in neighborhoods that help them to build equity.

It never had a chance to work in Sacramento.

The recession meant that little housing was being built, affordable or otherwise. Then, in 2009, the California Supreme Court put strict limits on cities’ power to implement inclusionary policies.

Developers never liked the rules, and the 2009 decision and the recession gave the Sacramento County officials justification to ditch similar inclusionary rules last year.

And developer representatives have more clout than ever in Sacramento city government.

BBQ’s Mayor Kevin Johnson’s housing adviser, Scott Whyte, used to be a legislative advocate for the North State Building Industry Association, the No. 1 opponent of inclusionary rules.

Councilman Rick Jennings hired former BIA vice president Dennis Rogers as his chief of staff.

So, it’s an understatement to say council isn’t the same, ideologically, as it was in 2000.

The city’s proposed new housing rules require developers to pay a fee into an affordablehousing fund. There will be no requirement for developers to include low-income units, though they can avoid the fee by building 10 percent of their units to be affordable.

City planner Greg Sandlund says over the next 20 years the new policy will generate enough money in fees to build about 1,500 affordable units. By comparison, the old inclusionary policy would have required construction of 3,000 units. But Sandlund says the policy was “inflexible” and likely would have fallen short.

Sacramento’s inclusionary policy is not the only tool. For example, the city also requires commercial development to kick in to the affordable-housing trust fund.

But now there will be no policy to require mixed-income communities. “Without the mandate, you run the risk of re-segregating,” says Veronica Beatty, with the Sacramento Housing Alliance.

What is the city’s affordable-housing strategy for, if it’s not for building more inclusive neighborhoods?

That’s because affordable housing is less profitable than high-end housing, so developers want to stick it where land is cheap: in lowincome neighborhoods. The pattern reinforces itself. “Segregation is not going to get better. It’s probably going to get worse,” says Beatty.

A fee-based policy could work, she says, if the fee were much higher. SHA is asking the city for a $4 per square foot, though they say the need is more like $10 to $13.

Sacramento’s inclusionary housing ordinance is obviously not going to be saved, not by this council. Still, why isn’t the word “segregation” part of the discussion? What a strange disconnect, given the moment we’re in.

What is the city’s affordable-housing strategy for, if it’s not for building more inclusive neighborhoods? And without the inclusionary rules, what tools does the city have to fight racial and economic segregation? “It’s a good question,” says Sandlund.

It’s one the city ought to answer, before changing the rules. Ω

Want to loaf around a stranger’s home, sporting someone else’s robe, watching ’90s Steven Spielberg flicks? Maybe Airbnb is for you. It certainly worked out for our writer (pictured).

n this complimentary white bath robe, I imagine I look the way Bill Murray looks in Lost in Translation , minus the Asian exoticism and luxury-hotel prestige. Like Murray, I’m sitting on the lip of a bed, posture be damned, feeling alien. Underneath the robe, I’m wearing only red Nautica swim trunks, a detail worth sharing because I am inside a stranger’s Land Park home.

The home’s owner, a real estate agent named Steve Walker, sits downstairs at his mahogany desk, quietly waiting for calls to show property while browsing on his Mac. He knows I’m in his bedroom; the robe is a hospitable gesture, for I am one of many guests to whom he’s offered accommodation as an Airbnb host.

During my stay at the real estate agent’s home, I play billiards in his basement, use his cable to nostalgically watch Hook on ABC Family, lounge in his Jacuzzi with my girlfriend and sleep in his kingsized bed. Most of the time, Walker hangs out in an Airstream parked in the driveway.

A week prior to this stay, I paid for the same royalties at a Midtown hideaway, conveniently charging a night in the master’s bedroom to the bank account stored in my cell phone.

This is how you Airbnb.

Founded in 2008 by Joe Gebbia and Brian Chesky, who were at the time two post-college San Franciscans on the verge of being penniless, Airbnb is basically home-sharing. A mi casa es su casa startup prompted by rising costs of living, and that has lead to reinventing the American guest bedroom as a cash cow.

Just like how ride-hailing apps Uber and Lyft are digitized hybrids of hitchhiking and taxis, Airbnb

and its contemporaries have revolutionized the bedand-breakfast and hotel industries. The corporation is valued at $25 billion—even though it owns zilch in real estate.

This online-based home-sharing movement dates back to sites like Couchsurfing.com, beta-launched in 2003, and Craigslist. But Airbnb is millennialfriendly: Creating a listing on the site is free. Pricing, availability and reservation requirements—these are yours to decide. You can book a house on your phone.

And, with each “reso” placed, payment is immediate.

Airbnb takes a 3 percent cut.

Mayor Kevin Johnson’s vision of Sacramento 3.0 is all about this new hospitality economy. “It’s only a matter of time before the world’s largest hotel will have no hotel rooms: Airbnb,” he said in a speech earlier this year.

But there are critics of this paradigm shift.

Here in Land Park, Walker says he’s accustomed to the transients frequenting his home. In fact, he actually prefers them over long-term tenants.

“You hear the old saying about what guests have in common with fish?” he asks.

After three days they both begin to stink.

Home is where the share is On Airbnb.com, there’s a video of a wobbly-legged infant taking coltish steps through a foyer. The voiceover ponders: “Is man kind? Are we good?”

The suggestion is that Airbnb is the answer to our deepest existential quandaries. Airbnb invites us to consider the possibility that inviting strangers into our homes just might renew faith in humanity. (Sit at their tables and sleep in their beds to find out!)

A week prior, the images on AirBnb.com included: a day-lit bedroom with a black child playing a handheld gaming system, a white couple gardening on a rooftop, a different white couple on street corner in an Asian country and a couple in the winter of their lives snapping a selfie in front of a traditional Japanese home. There was even an aerial shot of a treehouse’s living room tucked away in a jungle canopy—almost too surreal to believe, especially because the photo suggested this was merely the home’s west wing. Atop each image are the words “Welcome Home.”

However, Airbnb’s new slogan, “Belong Anywhere,” stings of colonialist privilege. The language reflects the company as a global empire, albeit one purportedly of equal opportunity.

Can’t afford Sacramento’s Citizen Hotel and its joie de vivre class and comfort for $200 a night? How about $90 for shared access to a 1901 craftsman bungalow, with a bathroom flat-screen viewable from the home’s glass-encased rainfall shower? Most can afford the latter. And many take advantage of this on Airbnb.

A couple of weeks back, I used Airbnb to stay at a modern Midtown apartment on I and 19 streets for $82. The entrance, flanked by hirsute vines, was a black metal door with ascending parallel gold nodes.

It looked like the entry to a tomb, not a mod bachelor pad. I Instagrammed it with the caption, “Portal to my sarcophagus for the night.”

Local music buffs might recognize this pad as the building where members of Death Grips once resided, presumably gathering inspiration for the band’s Epic debut The Money Store from the crestfallen shooting dope along the nearby train tracks. My hunch is that there’s creative energy to be absorbed here.

Businessweek already coined a term for the seedy veils attached to some listings: “Airbnb noir.”

The term barely applies to my stay. For most of the day, I remain nude, enjoying the cool cement floors.

Ben Ilfeld, founder of The Sacramento Press website, owns this building. He bought the building from sculptor Lane Van Doran in 2007 on the agreement he would not tear it down, and he’s made good on that promise.

The 34-year-old joined Airbnb in 2011, when he provided shelter for Uber developers from San Francisco, who had ventured inland to research the Sacramento market.

They planted the seed for the apartment as a full-time Airbnb. With interim tenants helping him test the market, Ilfeld was on his way.

“Uber was willing to pay a lot more than market rent in Sacramento,” Ilfeld explained.

San Francisco, and they’re a corporation.”

The money from that Airbnb stay allowed him to furnish the place.

Fellow Airbnb host Walker, 50, began selling houses the year I was born, in 1984.

A self-employed real estate agent for 30 years, he joined Airbnb in 2013. He’s never used it for travel, but after initial success with his listing, he made renovations to his home to better his rental rate. He did this based on a study that suggested travelers are 95 percent more likely to rent when provided a private bathroom.

“Those are pretty telling statistics,” Walker said. The remodeling provided two bedrooms with two baths upstairs.

“It’s paying the mortgage. No one is going to get rich doing this, but it helps pay the bills,” he says.

More importantly for Walker is the quality of travelers. He owns a fourplex on

“Why would I bring in someone who pays rent erratically and lives here all the time when I could rent that same room for a week, get paid in advance and have the rest of the month to myself?” he said.

“With Airbnb nice people come and they stay a few days and then they leave!”

Walker is a real estate agent, and he understands the housing-shortage issues in San Francisco and the Bay Area. But he also thinks Sacramento is far from having the same problems. And, in his industry, he says there are no talks around the proverbial water cooler about ditching the old ways for full-time Airbnb occupancies in housing complexes.

That said, he is considering turning one of the fourplex apartments into another listing due to the one-bedroom rarely sustaining long-term occupancy.

Ilfeld, however, admits that he’s not Airbnb’s ideal host candidate. “What they would want is you to stay with someone who posts you in an extra room or in their home while they are away,” he said. But he’s not into that.

“My place kind of proves their point,” he argues: Airbnb became a global movement turned revolution because it’s open to the user’s interpretation and comfort zone.

“They offer this service, and the service allows flexibility, so different people use it for different things,” Ilfeld explained. “I probably never would have used Airbnb if it was limited to [being] as folksy as Airbnb says they want it to be.”

But while the origins are informal, even down-home, the startup has swelled to an international corporation, influencing culture and policy in the process.

Chesky and Gebbia’s original vision came about after hosting conference-goers on air mattresses in their Tenderloin neighborhood loft. They provided their guests morning Pop Tarts and orange juice, and even spare change for panhandlers. It was all about favoring that authentic San Francisco experience as counter-currency to the commonplace hotel experience.

Like Lyft, the top Airbnb experiences come down to the host’s attention to detail and accommodations. Hotels can’t offer this—so it’s no surprise that the homesharing revolution is under attack.

Hack to the hotel Waging war against Airbnb is becoming a full-time job for Dale Carlson.

His ShareBetter SF organization wants to bring short-term rental regulations to the home-sharing industry in San Francisco. His goal is a ballot initiative that would cap reservations at 75 nights per year.

He also wants to fine companies like Airbnb and VRBO for listing units that aren’t registered with local governments. He says home-share outfits need to report the number of nights a unit is rented, and that cities need to be able to crack down on companies that break the rules. The S.F. planning department and public-policy specialists at UC Berkeley agree.

“These are the tools you need to make [regulations] effective,” Carson told SN&R. “[But] those tools don’t exist, and they won’t until our initiative passes.”

Meanwhile, doors are closing on the share economy. VRBO was banned in Santa Monica this year. New York City and San Francisco, notorious for their outlandish rental rates, are at an ideological stalemate as to whether Airbnb stimulates the economy or destabilizes neighborhoods. New York City has roughly 25,000 users. San Francisco has slightly less with 20,000.

As for Sacramento, at roughly 500 listings, we’re small potatoes in the argument. Yet most NIMBYs likely live unwittingly adjacent to hosts.

“I live two doors down from Vic’s Ice Cream,” Walker said.

“There’s hundreds of people going to Vic’s every day.

Nobody is going to notice one or two extra cars here.”

But Carlson says he has hard data pointing to Airbnb’s desecration of communities. For instance, he argues that there’s a correlation between the concentration of listings on the top-three home-sharing sites and eviction rates in those neighborhoods.

“Airbnb continues to hide behind homesharing,” Carlson said. “They say, ‘We’re just trying to help middle-class people rent an extra room in their homes, make a few extra bucks to pay their mortgage, pay their property taxes. We’re just helping people make ends meet.’ Well, that’s their claim, and certainly there are people using it that way. But, most of the people on Airbnb are not. They are not making ends meet.

by Airbnb to comment and possibly lobby on behalf of the service, which he declined.

Had he joined the fight, he might have been among the reported millennial throng present for a hearing earlier this year for Senate Bill 593.

This proposed law would require Airbnb to pay a TOT, or transient occupancy tax, known colloquially as the “bed tax.” In addition—and this where Airbnb supremely objects—the corporation would be required to fork over big data, specifically the number of guests and hosts and lengths of stay, to cities and counties.

Home-share companies call this a breach of privacy. But the bill’s author, Senator Mike McGuire of the coastal town Healdsburg, iterated that the bill does not

require companies to divulge names and information, only figures.

Still, Airbnb public-policy regional head David Owen called the bill a “blunt instrument intended to stunt the growth of an incredibly valuable industry.”

At the city level, local Councilman Jay Schenirer considers Sacramento’s small sample size an advantage in assessing future policy when it comes to home-sharing.

suffer their share of policy limbo, Schenirer has been a voice of reason when it comes to Airbnb, suggesting that we not kill the new industry on sight. Coincidentally, when I spoke with the council member, he was on vacation in the San Juan Islands outside of Seattle—staying at a VRBO-listed home.

“The thing for Sacramento right now is that the number of Airbnbs is so small that it gives us an opportunity to get it right without having a significant impact on the hotel industry or the neighborhoods,” he explained. “There’s an opportunity for the city to be thoughtful about it, to find that balance, so that this new industry can prosper and help Sacramento while also protecting the neighborhoods.”

Having recently been to Santa Monica, where VRBO was outlawed, Schenirer expects the city of Sacramento to be more conscientious in its handling of the homesharing industry.

It also helps that Sacramento is not yet on the front lines of the short-term-rental battles like those fought in New York City and San Francisco. The few hundred hosts dotting Midtown and Curtis Park, stretching north to Natomas and east to Granite Bay, are not the scapegoats of tomorrow’s rental crisis. At least, not yet.

Yet Carlson has advice for the capital: “Get in front of it before it gets too big to control.”

Staying around the corner from Vic’s Ice Cream. Tightrope-walking on the train tracks in Midtown with a bag full of barbecue and dirty Tater Tots. A framed aerial portrait of downtown Sacramento taken in 1994 in one room, tokens of history from 1901 and 2012 in another.

While standing robed and barefoot in Walker’s basement, he shares that, weeks prior, he threw a raging party down here.

The band set up in the musty corner, and his backyard was so full of people that it would make anyone claustrophobic. The point is that Walker is going to invite people into his home regardless.

For Ilfeld, the money earned on his Airbnb apartment means he never has to raise the rent on the nonprofit Bike Kitchen.

So far, it seems that most of the hosts in our city aren’t opportunistic.

And, in Sacramento, home-sharing isn’t just millennial flophouses inviting belligerent tourists to piss on your lawn while you sleep. At least, not yet. Hosts are named Bill and Cathy, with a Land Park cottage; DeAnn, with a two-bedroom guest suite; and Molly, the papier-mâché artist offering her entire McKinley Park home. These local listings offer quaint guest rooms in Midtown Victorians, stucco cookie-cutter condos in Natomas and the occasional nouveau loft. And, for the daring, a night on the river in the underbelly of a boat.

Local chefs and farmers share tips on how to use every last bit of those summer vegetables

Jon Clemons, executive chef at The Porch Restaurant and Bar, slices, dices and chops typically discarded veggie bits to add flavor and create new dishes.

F

armers markets are popular with just about anyone looking for fresh, locally grown produce. So fresh, in fact, that many times the fruits and vegetables displayed in mounds at merchant tents are often picked from the field the previous day.

Weekends especially thrive with a variety of pop-up veggie shops, such as Midtown’s more artisanal-focused market with its specialty salsas and a fair share of crafters, or the smaller Oak Park market at McClatchy Park. And then there’s the cornucopia of locally grown abundance, the Sunday farmers market at 8th and W streets.

Visit any of these locations and witness as swarms of shoppers fill canvas bags with bunches of leafy greens, cherry red vineripened tomatoes, and baskets of freshly picked berries. Still, no matter how good it feels to stock the fridge full of healthy eats, the pressure builds when crisp vegetables

Even though many farmers market fiends challenge themselves to cook what they bring home each week, too often stems, leaves and rinds end up in the garbage. Chefs and farmers alike, however, say these overlooked pieces have tasty nutritional value.

Executive chef Jon Clemons at The Porch Restaurant and Bar says he likes to think about creative ways to use the entire vegetable. He and his staff use a variety of techniques to transform rinds, cobs and even buckets of green tomato odds and ends into delicious fare.

“We do a lot of scratch cooking, so nothing really goes to waste,” Clemons says.

A corn cob, for example, might be rendered into broth that’s then used to cook a batch of grits.

“It gives grits an added flavor,” he says.

“You can also actually roast [the kernels] off ahead of time to give them a darker color and a richer flavor.”

The Porch is known for its Southern flare of comfort-style cooking, so it’s no surprise that Clemons uses many vegetables and even some fruits for pickling.

“Pickled watermelon rinds are pretty popular in the South,” he says. “If you do it right, it’s really good, but it’s a lot of work.”

Clemons’ method for preserving rinds involves separating the sweet, red fruit from the white flesh attached to the rind.

Next, he partially cooks the rind and lets it cool in an ice bath. Then, he shaves off the green part of the rind and saves the leftover fruit for pickling.

Another southern favorite of Clemons’ is fried green tomatoes. It’s a Porch favorite, too, he says. The volume of orders the kitchen receives on a nightly basis fills buckets with green tomato tops and bottoms—all of which are repurposed.

Green tomatoes contain a naturally high amount of pectin, which is great for adding thickness to house-made jams, Clemons says, and green tomato’s neutral flavor adds to the jam’s texture without altering its sweet taste.

In addition to sweet jams like strawberry, Clemons also makes green tomato jam.

“We save all the tops and bottoms from when we slice them for frying and we’ll make green tomato jam and serve it with our cornbread. It’s a unique, southern thing.”

The Sacramento Valley’s copious harvests of potatoes, scallions and squash, and its assortment of berries, melons and stone fruit provides a year-round assortment of healthy eats.

Heavy Dirt Farm owner Sarah McCamman, who sets up shop every Saturday at the Oak Park farmers market from 9 a.m. to noon, says she looks forward to the seasonal role her two-acre farm provides for its community.

boxes from her farm to two locations year-round, one in Davis at 8th and L streets, and one in Midtown at 19th and F streets.

As a farmer, McCamman plants and harvests shishito peppers, eggplants, apricots, strawberries and a variety of herbs like cilantro, dill and summer savory. She says she feels it’s her responsibility to not only help her customers keep their wares fresh for as long as possible, but to also point to what’s ripe and delicious that week.

broccoli stems, beet greens and even veggie pulp into delectable eats instead of discarded scraps.

“If you take the peel off the tough stems of broccoli, the inside is actually pretty enjoyable,” says Kendall. “You can use it raw to make a slaw if you slice it up into matchsticks, or even just sauté it.”

His recipe for broccoli slaw includes jalapeños, cashews, shredded carrots, cilantro, and just a little bit of rice vinegar and a pinch of salt.

Kendall says his vegan diet contributes to his creativity in the kitchen. For him, vegetable pieces that are traditionally thrown away are his inspiration.

“ Honoring the vegetable … especially working so closely with the farmers, I want to utilize all the work that’s been put into it.”

“With beets and carrots, when you buy a bunch with all their greens attached, go ahead and separate the greens from the roots,” she explains. “They’ll last longer.

Attached to the roots, they’ll continue to suck moisture out of the roots as if the plant were still in the soil. You can keep these both for a really long time. If you separate them, they can last a couple weeks.”

Once the greens are separated from the carrots, McCamman says carrot greens make a great pesto in lieu of basil.

Another Sacramento chef who backs vegetables agrees greens are to be eaten.

“I have used a lot of veggie scraps for veggie burgers because if you cook them up, roast them and puree them, it acts like a good binder,” says Kendall. “Or, for the tops of beets and turnips, we use them like greens and cook them down. We’ll take the tops off, chop them up, sauté them with a little garlic, salt and pepper and let them cook in their juices like you would mustard or collard greens.”

Serve the sautéed beet or turnip greens with any style of protein, beans or mashed potatoes, or as Kendall prefers, roasted winter squash and tofu cutlets.

“We really try to minimize vegetable waste because we take pride in our ingredients and our dishes,” says Kendall.

“Honoring the vegetable … especially working so closely with the farmers, I want to utilize all the work that’s been put into it. We want to show our appreciation and give back when creating any dish.”

In case you somehow forgot, women are rad.

A group of DIY Sacramentans on a mission gathered up more than 15 performers and bands to remind you not only of the radness of women, but also of your own radness and your own ability to make a difference. The inaugural Sac LadyFest most definitely succeeded in that aim.

Cafe Colonial became a crowded hideout for badass people doing badass things as the festival ran Friday and Saturday nights, and no particular style of music dominated: Earthmother-worshiping folk, Native American flute, riot grrrl punk, hip-hop, neurotic rock and more shone brightly alongside slam poetry and stand-up comedy. And just like the music, there wasn’t a restriction on who could be there to celebrate equality, with people of all genders and sexualities hitting the stage.

DIY-ethos stood front and center throughout, with emcee Keyko Torres-Oki emphatically reminding the audience that this only happened because a few people got tired of waiting for something to show up, and yes, you too can get out there and make it happen.

That belief was exhibited in the diversity of performers, from the Spewcats of the Cuttlefish’s horrifyingly amazing, Gwar-inspired, homemade space-monster costume to the

well-polished production and finesse of festival closer Century Got Bars. And with the

A common theme throughout was living authentically, whether that’s as a person who loves in a way that society frowns upon or as a person who expresses gender in an “unacceptable” way—a quick audience poll asked how many “closets” people have had to come out of, only to end with a refrain of “Fuck closets!”

On that path of selfdiscovery, members of multiple bands took a moment to reflect on their experiences with coming out and feeling accepted, along with what it takes to fight that garden-variety sexism all women face. As Century Got Bars put it, “We’re not just ‘girl’ anything. I rap like a girl proudly.” And the audience was always ready to cheer for each proclamation of love and acceptance.

And for those who couldn’t play, there were magazines for snipping scraps to build zines and messages of empowerment.

Nearby, tarot readings helped attendees reflect on their futures.

LadyFest stood as a companion to all of the other LadyFests across the world, built from the ground up for the people here, by the people here. The festival welcomed and celebrated people of all intersections of identity, people facing constant challenges for simply being.

But of course, when you’ve got top-notch acts like the Kelps and Night Damage holding down your attention, it really makes the whole “celebration” bit a lot easier. Keep an eye out for the next Sac LadyFest in 2016 and don’t be afraid to make a part of it your own.

In her role as corporate communications director for the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals, her primary responsibility is ensuring a smooth implementation of the ACA across all branches of the health care industry. By doing so, Daley is paving the way for the ACA to fulfill its purpose — guaranteeing access to treatment that best suits each individual’s needs.

“We want to be the eyes and ears to help policy-makers make decisions that will help people be healthy and maintain sobriety,” Daley says.

“We’re working together to show insurers that our program can provide the services they need in order to provide the best possible treatment to their clients.”

Daley says that her team is in the final stages of implementation, focusing on increasing workforce volume.

“We have to be sure before we can officially roll it out that the health care industry has the capacity to manage,” she says.

One critical aspect of the industry impacted by ACA changes is insurance.

“For a long time, addiction services have been covered by state-funded programs,” Daley says. “Insurers haven’t had a lot of resources in working with community-type treatment programs.”

Such programs, which can include detox services, residential treatment and intensive outpatient treatment, have long been considered “out of reach” for many Californians suffering from addiction.

“We’re working together to show insurers that our program can

acramento used to have a pretty big indie-film-watching scene. Some would argue it still does. But I’ll never forget how five years ago I could go see quirky films at Movies on a Big Screen at the Guild Theater every month, or go see new indie flicks at the Crest every weekend.

While those two aren’t possible anymore, there’s still the Tower Theater, small groups of people bringing important films to town and a bunch of great film festivals.

Plus, if you look around this week, a handful of indie films (and some throwbacks) seem to have come back.

An event on Friday, July 24, at the General Gomez Arts and Events Center (808 Lincoln Way in Auburn) is more like a conversation about film, but there are also a few sneak peaks at an upcoming indie documentary called When

Johnny Played with the Dark Side.

It’s about some of the original LucasFilm artists, and features guest speakers Frank Ordaz (who’s from Auburn), plus filmmaker Anthony Thaxton and Star Wars visual effects model maker Steve Gawley. The event starts at 7 p.m. and tickets ($11) are available at www.generalgomez.com.

New Belgium Brewing’s Clips & Beer Film Tour (www.NewBelgium. com/Clips) also rolls into town on Friday, July 24. It’s a chance for people to watch films outdoors for free while sampling up to 17 varieties of New Belgium brews ($1.50 per 3-ounce sample, or $6 for a 12-ounce beer). Food vendors on hand will include Hot Italian, Rivers Edge Cafe and Hogs, Horns and Hens Barbecue.

Transcendent berries Strawberries and cream, Localis Localis recently opened under the talented watch of chef Christopher Barnum, who came down from the high hills of Roseville at Cibo 7. I had a meal there that was near perfect, and if I had time I would give the whole thing a soliloquy worthy of Proust.

But for now, let’s just talk about the dessert: a rendition of strawberries and cream ($9). Strawberries, both raw and roasted, are served with purple shiso, a delicate panna cotta and a delightful little serving of strawberry sorbet. It sounds simple, and it is.

It’s the eloquent execution that’s so transcendent.

Two concepts, one location: Last week, About a Bite Bakery and Harvest Bar both opened at 1200 K Street, a split storefront that almost feels like a two-business food court.

About a Bite Bakery isn’t entirely new—it previously operated out of a warehouse in Gold River, completing online orders and catering events. But this is the bakery’s first-ever retail location. Everything at About a Bite is miniature: tiny cookie sandwiches known as “Between 2 Cookies” ($1.75); tiny layered bars, simply called “Bars” ($1.25); and tiny combos of shortbread cookie topped with candy, covered in chocolate, called “Bites” ($2.50). Harvest Bar comes from Kate Chomko of Downtown & Vine, which is conveniently located right next door. Watch out: The founder of Psycho Donuts—a hotspot in Silicon Valley for its crazy gourmet doughnuts and crazier decor—will launch a new fried dough concept in Sacramento next month: Donut Madness. | F E AT U R E STORY

Instead of Psycho Donuts’ kitschy take on a mental institution, Donut Madness gets its imagery from horror movies.

Kipp Berdiansky hopes to open Donut Madness in late August at 2648 Watt Avenue. The exterior walls will be lined with vintage horror movie posters; inside, there will be a not-functioning guillotine; a doughnut display case that resembles a coffin; servers with bloody aprons; and other gags, “like a horror Disneyland,” Berdiansky says.

Berdiansky will duplicate some of the recipes he invented while at Psycho Donuts, such as the popular apricot fritters. The style is much like Portland’s Voodoo Doughnut, with cereal toppings and outrageous names.

There’s an old-fashioned dipped in marshmallow and Rice Krispies.

There’s a maple bar topped with potato chips. Doughnut holes are piled into popcorn-style cups with sauces and toppings, with names like Blood and Guts and Rocky Roadkill.

“And lots of bacon, of course,” Berdiansky says. But vegans can celebrate too, as Berdiansky says there will be vegan options daily.

I was under the impression that the cocktail world was done with egg whites—a coda of a cocktail style that faded in the early ’80s. Recently at Grange, I was pleased to learn that wasn’t quite true after all. Take Amy’s Wedding ($13), a wholly unique cocktail that eschews the Pisco Sour and Ramos Gin Fizz. It starts with vodka infused with lavender and vanilla, then lime, herbaceous Galliano and an incredibly silky egg-white foam. Peaches, everyday Peaches If you want a really good peach, buy it at a farmers market or cadge one from a neighbor’s yard. They’re best when they’re ripened on the tree and served sun-warmed with the juices dripping down your chin.

This is the time of year to get them, but you might need to conduct a taste test. Try white peaches for more floral sweetness; yellow for a honeyed flavor. Look for freestone peaches if you want to slice and bake them; cling peaches are good for eating out of hand. Don’t forgo blemished orbs: Cut out the bad parts and use the good for smoothies or a quick sauce. You can even slice and freeze them for a midwinter jolt of summery memories.

Pear it all There are many relatively new food festivals in Sacramento celebrating one specific type of food: Bacon Fest Sacramento, the Sacratomato Festival and the Sacramento Burger Battle, to name a few. Sure, they’re all great events, but few match the sheer pageantry and old-school quaintness of the Courtland Pear Fair (www.pearfair.com). Now in its 42nd year, the festival celebrates the Bartlett pear harvest with food, drinks and entertainment—plus a “Royal Court,” a parade and a 5- and 10-mile run through scenic pear orchards and vineyards. Arts and crafts vendors, fine art, a pancake breakfast, wine tasting, a history exhibition and a duck calling contest round out the rural small-Delta-town fair. There will be pear pies for sale starting at 9 a.m., so make sure to get one early before they sell out. Going back to Afghan cuisine

The slightly smoky slices of eggplant, brony bonjan, is described as “very tender.” It may not be physically possible to be any more tender; it’s the eggplant dish to cure eggplant-texture phobics. The famished can order the Vegetarian Feast for $33.95 (and a minimum of four people). I will be going back, though, because I forgot to try the sweet roasted almond and rose water dessert.

There may be a lot of meat in Afghan cuisine, like lamb, but it’s also very vegetarian friendly, and at Bamiyan Restaurant in El Dorado Hills, vegan friendly, too (1121 White Rock Road; there’s also a Citrus Heights location at 7622 Greenback Lane).

Many of the dishes on the menu containing meat can be made vegetarian and vegan on request.

WigOutgraphics Local artist Wendy Giminski likes to make it known that she’ll draw on just about anything: wood, clay, gourds—anything except canvas; she really hates ART canvas. But who needs canvas when you’re practically Picasso with the cucurbitaceae?

Take, for example, the “Ungrateful Yuppie Larvae” (pictured) from her Ghostbusters-themed series, which is available on the WigOutGraphics Etsy store for $75: a big, womb-like gourd is bisected, and inside, two more bisected, smaller gourds are painted as needy, budding ungrateful yuppies.

Or the “If Slimer Had a Brain,” gourd ($75), featuring Slimer’s face on the convex side of a gourd half, and a clay-and-papier-mâché brain nestled in the concave half. Musthave pieces in preparation for next year’s Ghostbusters reboot, I say.

Giminski doesn’t limit herself to painting dried squash husks (though she even makes earrings out of ’em, available for $15). The Explorers Club

This summer, watch a bunch of young lovers die on (and off) stage Each summer, some unanticipated trend emerges among local shows. And this year, it’s “pretty lover boys die young.” It’s happening all over town. by Jeff Hudson There’s the Sacramento Shakespeare Festival’s Romeo and Juliet—an unusual production, because the show has an all-male cast (standard practice in Shakespeare’s day), and because the cast wears Elizabethan-style garb. Pumpkin breeches are seldom seen in Shakespeare shows nowadays; most productions opt for a more contemporary look. Actor Sean Olivares, who plays Romeo, told SN&R that he gets pretty sweaty in his heavy Elizabethan costume performing outdoors on a hot evening.

Romeo gets into sword fights, and he also has lots of lines between the moment he swallows poison, and the time (several minutes later) when he breathes his last breath.

Playwright Nell Benjamin’s farce is the kind of madcap comedy that B Street Theatre does better than anyone else. Buck Busfield directs an extremely talented ensemble cast in the broad comedy about an 1870s London men’s club of adventurers that is thrown into a tizzy when a woman is proposed for membership. lover Tony (who falls for the Puerto Rican beauty Maria) was a Polish-American boy (though “Tony” tends to suggest Italian heritage).

The Music Circus is reportedly sticking with his original Polish-American lineage. Either way— spoiler alert—the lover-boy dies in the finale. Ω

The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Charles Dickens died before he completed his final novel. This musical adaptation of that novel lets the audience vote at each performance, and pick the ending it prefers. The show is staged as a play-within-a-play, as members of a 1880s theater company stage Drood in an English music hall. Th, F 8pm; Sa 2pm

Alicia Lyn Hunt, as The Pilot, exudes confidence and pride that she is an Air Force “top gun” in a profession which does not welcome women easily, in the play Grounded, by George Brant, now playing as part of the B Street Theater’s B3 season. The Pilot is accepted as one of the guys. They go up in their planes, hit their targets and then go to the local bar to drink together—the camaraderie of soldiers in a war. Then she meets Eric, that rare man who can accept her job, which intimidates most men. They begin a relationship and when she become pregnant, the Air Force grounds her, assigning her to desk duty, or the “chair force,” as she calls it.

When baby Samantha is 3, the Pilot misses her old job and wants it back.

She is assigned, instead, to a drone group, where she takes her daughter to school in the morning, then sits in an air conditioned trailer on the Nevada desert watching “bad guys” on the ground in the Middle East, blows them up and is home in time to put Samantha to bed at night.

This gripping one-woman tour de force, directed by Lyndsay Burch, explores in intricate detail the effects on the bomber of our modern war, where the pilot is never in danger, the camera provides too close a look at the body parts of the victims as they explode and where there is no way to unwind at the end of the day, and no way to share anything with family because of security reasons.

Hunt is masterful as The Pilot, slowly succumbing to the mental pressures. She gives a performance that will long be remembered.

There are talk-back sessions after many performances.

Next to Normal

The subject of mental health, particularly grief and depression, gets a thoughtful—and more entertaining than you might expect—examination in this production. It’s a rock musical with a message and the talented cast, led by Andrea Thorpe as the troubled mother and Michael Roivas as the son she can’t let go of, is excellent.

The Sacramento Shakespeare Festival presents the classic tale of two star-crossed lovers the way theater was presented in Shakespeare’s day: with an all-male cast (since women were banned from the stage in the 16th century). Another production of Romeo and Juliet is at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Fest—with costumes recalling 1930s Italy when the Fascists were taking control. The fiery Tybalt becomes one of Mussolini’s dreaded Blackshirts, a private army of sinister thugs who eliminate anyone blocking their leader’s path to power.

And in the Davis Shakespeare Festival’s The Mystery of Edwin Drood, the title character (a dapper young-man-of-means, engaged to wed) appears to meet a grim fate. Drood takes a fateful walk with a dubious companion during a howling storm (on Christmas Eve!). He’s never seen again, and is presumed to have been murdered. In Davis, Drood is played by actress Susanna Risser, who looks snappy wearing pants and a fedora.

Sirens in a museum?

Burlesque in a museum? Yes, indeed, at the Sizzling Sirens Anniversary Spectacular. The local troupe has been performing burlesque for the past seven years, always with a self-aware wink and respect for the history of the art form. Sizzling Sirens shows are all-out, full-fledged evenings of entertainment. There is, of course, the seductive burlesque dance, but there are also sketches, vaudeville, music, comedy, satire and a ton of creativity. The Sizzling Sirens, who started in 2008, have a rotating cast of players, giving the show a unique flair each time. They are also very serious about their craft, and they hold workshops for new and experienced performers alike to perfect their burlesque chops. The event will be hosted by Jay Siren and Kingfish (of San Francisco’s Hubba Hubba Revue). Mind over family matters Infinitely Polar Bear A sweet, sensitive and affectionate movie about two girls growing up in a mixed-race household with a manic-depressive father, writer-director Maya by Daniel Barnes Forbes’ Infinitely Polar Bear has been “Rated R for Language” by the Motion Picture Association of America. Of course, even if the mentally unbalanced father played by Mark Ruffalo didn’t swear like a sailor throughout the film, it probably still would have received an R for his nonstop cigarette smoking. After all, the MPAA recently noted that the rating for Mr. Holmes was partially due to “Incidental Smoking,” whatever that is.

If Ruffalo were decapitating people by the thousands and pulling their spines out of their assholes, Infinitely Polar Bear would have easily earned a PG-13 rating, but since Forbes couldn’t make a halfway honest film about her free-spirit father without including his penchants for profanity and tobacco, the inevitable R freed her to make this family memoir as raw and deeply personal as she liked. There’s certainly a palpable sense of warmth and sincerity to the film, but I wish Forbes had wanted to give her audience something a little more substantial than a case of the warm fuzzies.

Infinitely Polar Bear is a family affair in more ways than subject matter—Forbes’ daughter Imogene Wolodarsky stands in for her mother in the lead role of Amelia, the older daughter and narrator. Amelia explains that her parents Cameron (Ruffalo, fantastic) and Maggie (Zoe Saldana, adequate) fell in love in the 1960s, but that her father’s subsequent breakdowns and overall instability drove a wedge in their relationship. They’re separated when the story starts in 1978, with an unemployable Cameron recovering from a mental hospital stay, while Maggie struggles to find a job that will support the family.

When Maggie gets accepted into an MBA program in New York City, she reluctantly leaves the girls with Cameron while she earns

her degree. Cameron is the better cook and better nurturer (among many nice touches, the film acknowledges but doesn’t indulge his feelings of emasculation at becoming a homemaker), but he can’t be trusted to provide the structure and stability that the girls crave. Amelia and her little sister Faith (Ashley Aufderheide) are mortified by his lack of social awareness, as well as his hair-trigger temper and drinking problem, and they refuse to invite friends over to his filthy apartment.

To its infinite credit, though, the film never judges Cameron too harshly, even when he replaces his lithium treatment with “small, steady sips of beer all day long,” or when he skips out on the girls to go carousing in a bar. Movies about mental illness tend to shade the symptoms as cute and quirky, and while Forbes occasionally falls into that trap, there are a lot of little moments here that feel honest and earned—a distressed Faith carving a flower into the dinner table because “it looks pretty,” or Cameron cursing out the girls when they chide him for his overbearing and unwelcome helpfulness.

Forbes does a great job creating a realistic and relatable family dynamic, even as everyone outside of the family is subtly and self-righteously portrayed as a bully or a grotesque.

Luckily, Ruffalo has a genuine rapport with the girls that paves over some of the holes in the script, and both Wolodarsky and Aufderheide give excellent performances, managing to play precocious without coming across as cloying or coached. They’re almost good enough to forget that neither of these children ages a day over the course of several years.

I wish Forbes had wanted to give her audience something a little more substantial than a case of the warm fuzzies.

Best known for working on The Larry Sanders Show and co-writing the script for Monsters vs. Aliens, Forbes makes her directorial debut with Infinitely Polar Bear.

No doubt it must have helped to have friends in high places—J.J. Abrams, Ruffalo and Wallace Wolodarsky (Forbes’ spouse and an original writer on The Simpsons) are among a litany of 22 credited producers. With so many cooks, it’s a credit to Forbes that the finished product feels so humane and distinctly personal. If only her life story included more grisly beheadings, it would have been deemed suitable for the entire family. Ω

Director Asif Kapadia (Senna) constructs Amy, a heartbreaking documentary about the self-destructive chanteuse Amy Winehouse, almost entirely from existing footage, largely allowing Winehouse to tell her own tragic life story. Amy follows Winehouse from her early days as an out-of-time jazz singer through her extended “troubled ingénue” period and finally to her breakthrough superstardom and long public meltdown. Through it all, Winehouse’s lyrics serve as her voice, brutally sardonic autobiographical outlets for her demons and desires. Kapadia crafts a portrait of a fragile soul with a brash and outwardly confident personality, one that masked a self-loathing and vulnerability that was left easily exploited by her own inner circle. Although Amy isn’t quite the daring and dispiriting triumph of the recent and similar Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, it’s still an extremely powerful and emotionally resonant work, and a stirring testimony to the unique talent and unrealized potential of Amy Winehouse. A dying billionaire (Ben Kingsley in a glorified cameo) pays a fortune for a radical (and secret) medical procedure to transfer his consciousness into a healthy young body (Ryan Reynolds)—then learns that the supposedly genetically engineered body comes with sporadic built-in memories of its own. The script by brothers David and Alex Pastor is a rather preposterous riff on a much better movie, John Frankenheimer’s Seconds (1966) with Rock Hudson. Plot holes gape on all sides, and at 116 minutes the Pastors and director Tarsem Singh give us ample time to notice them. Still, the movie is fun in spite of itself; Ryan is his usual sturdy self, and Matthew Goode is smoothly sinister as the presiding doctor. Others include Natalie Martinez, Victor Garber and Michelle Dockery (in another glorified cameo). J.L.

by Tim Herlihy from a two-minute short by Patrick Jean, the movie feels heavily padded at 105 minutes, and there are several sloppy touches (Michelle Monaghan plays an Army officer but wears a Navy uniform). But there are amusing touches too: some funny dialogue (especially in the early scenes), a wealth of retro-’80s musical nostalgia on the soundtrack and several amusing guest-star cameos. Jeffrey Hatcher (adapting Mitch Cullin’s novel A Slight Trick of the Mind) provide an elegiac portrait of the aging sleuth, juggling four separate stories adroitly interwoven by editor Virginia Katz. The movie’s strongest scenes involve Holmes and the young son (Milo Parker) of his Sussex housekeeper (Laura Linney), but the whole movie is of one smooth, elegant piece, with Patrick Kennedy and Hattie Morahan as the principals in that 30-year-old case and Hiroyuki Sanada as Holmes’ Japanese admirer. Towering over all, predictably enough, is McKellen’s textured, quietly stunning performance. J.L.

BACK TO THE FUTURE 2 & 3

Beyond the usual genre themes of heroism and sacrifice, the best war films tend to project a sense of an intractable and ultimately unwinnable situation. Matthew Heineman’s enthralling documentary Cartel Land, while not technically a war film in any militaristic sense, explores that same sense of frustration. Cartel Land examines the brutal violence being waged on America’s doorstep by the Mexican drug and human trafficking cartels, and especially at the armed vigilante movements that have sprung up on both sides of the border in retaliation. The movie’s executive producer is Kathryn Bigelow, and it’s no surprise she got behind it—Cartel Land has all of the electricity of her films The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, yet it consistently remains a level-headed and unbelievably intimate piece of cinematic journalism. Heineman and his crew gain a terrifying level of access, giving us front-row seats to the drug war. D.B.

Steven Soderbergh’s male stripper movie Magic Mike became a left-field hit in 2012, but the film’s runaway success was largely due to a shrewd marketing campaign that played up the girl’s-nightout sexiness, while Trojan horsing a smart, spare, deceptively stylish, distinctly Soderbergh-ian drama about workplace dehumanization. Gregory Jacobs’ cash-in sequel Magic Mike XXL, on the other hand, is the pandering, eager-to-please sex fantasy that most ticket buyers probably thought they were getting the first time around. Magic Mike is a film about stripping; Magic Mike XXL is a stripper. All in all, Magic Mike XXL is still pretty fun for an unambitious cash-in sequel, more of a rollicking road comedy and omnibus performance movie this time, closer to an R-rated Step Up sequel than anything remotely Soderbergh-ian. The film coasts a long way on star Channing Tatum’s effortless charm; luckily, he has more than enough to spare. D.B.

The result is joyously funny, as good as anything Pixar Studios has ever done. The depressingly familiar Ant-Man boasts screenplay credits from the likes of Edgar Wright (The World’s End), Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), Adam McKay (Anchorman) and star Paul Rudd, but hack director Peyton Reed (Yes Man) ensures that the final product remains the same old Marvel smirk-fest. Rudd plays Scott Lang (so far, so good), an accomplished cat burglar (uh-uh) and hardened felon (nope) recruited by a reclusive billionaire to wear a magic suit that shrinks him to insect size (slightly more believable). If you’ve seen one Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, you’ve seen them all, so thank God we’re already slated to get several thousand more of them between now and 2020. Ant-Man doesn’t even try to break the mold, but at least it’s less busy and bombastic than most Marvel offerings, more focused on superpowers than firepower, with a solid supporting cast that far outshines leads Rudd and Evangeline Lilly. Director Alan Taylor and writers Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier reboot the franchise, carefully incorporating bits and pieces of all the movies and TV series since James Cameron’s 1984 original, ironing out any conflicts by deploying that trusty old science fiction standby, time-travel paradox.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back, of course— it would hardly be a Terminator movie without him—adding a wry touch of deadpan self-mockery (the fact that this “robot” has aged 30 years is deftly explained away). Under Taylor’s briskly over-the-top direction, the movie is good fun, albeit complicated and not always logical. The real secret weapon here isn’t time machines or robots, it’s Emilia Clarke (of Game of Thrones) as Sarah Conner, tender and forceful as needed in a potentially star-making performance. J.L.

Trainwreck

It’s a sad commentary on the current state of the cinema that funny women do their edgiest work on television, but have their edges sanded off whenever they stray into movies (Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are prime examples). If anyone could buck the trend, it would be the hilarious Amy Schumer, the rare comedian with the talent to be simultaneously self-deprecating, empowering and raunchy as shit. But even though Schumer wrote the screenplay for Trainwreck, giving herself an in-the-wheelhouse lead role as a sexually active men’s magazine writer whose anti-monogamy worldview gets challenged when she falls for Bill Hader’s sweet sports doctor, this uneven comedy is guided more by director/buzzkill Judd Apatow’s bourgeois moral compass than by Schumer’s anarchic satire. In a film filled with cameos by comedy legends and SNL cast members, LeBron James and Jon Cena get by far the biggest laughs, which is maybe a problem. D.B.

drums again because I hadn’t seen it in 10 years,” Newport says.

The guys initially planned to just do the Old Ironsides gig. That progressed to maybe playing annually. That progressed to entering full-on band mode. And tendonitis isn’t getting in Cox’s way this time.

“It feels like I’m rebuilding my life,” he says. “It feels like I’m 16 again, playing in the garage.”

Part of that nostalgia is probably due to Newport’s presence—they were buddies in high school.

“It’s pretty amazing to find people you’re willing to be around for 20-something years and have it not fall apart into arguments,” Newport says.

And it didn’t take long for Las Pesadillas to get back into the swing of things—though, “our first practice was squirrely,” says Nelson—and relearn its lengthy catalog. Las Pesadillas also has a couple of hours of unreleased demo recordings, and an old idea for a concept album: an apocalypse brought on by water. A fitting idea now, given California’s drought.

“One day, we’re going to tackle all of that,” Cox says.

For now, the band is already—and quickly—writing new material. Over the course of one practice, Las Pesadillas will sometimes bang out a complete song—it’s happened four times since the reunion.

Las Pesadillas had, to its credit, been together for a whopping decade. During that time it released two full-length albums, two EPs and one creepy soundtrack to a zombie flick. Its songs show influences of surf, punk, gypsy, Eastern European, country, new wave and rock—sometimes many at once. Las Pesadillas provides adventurous listening.

And now the band will provide such adventures once again—Nelson, Sol and Cox have reunited as Las Pesadillas, with their longtime friend Glenn Newport on bass.

Who to thank? Mark Gonzales, booker at Old Ironsides, who kept badgering the guys to bring back Las Pesadillas for the venue’s 80th anniversary party last fall.

In the end it came down to convincing one member in particular.

“Of anybody, I was the one who needed convincing,” Cox says. “I kind of gave up on music for a few years.”

Cox says he largely wanted to leave Las Pesadillas because of tendonitis. Playing the drums proved to be an enormous physical challenge—he switched to guitar when Cox and Nelson formed their subsequent band, Radio Orangevale, with Newport.

“Part of why I wanted to do Las Pesadillas was to get [Cox] behind the

“A lot has happened in the intervening eight years in music that I think influences your taste whether you know it or not,” Newport says.

As far as influences go, Las Pesadillas members can’t really name any acts that influence them now nor influenced them a decade ago. Instead, Nelson says he’s most inspired by an idea: “To be a band that sounds like no other band.” Ω

About last weekend Back, for now: Dreaded Diamond, a brother-sister duo with Tyler and Juliana Lydell, rocked Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub at their EP release show Friday, July 17. Good news: Youngling, the band’s new album, is all that fans could hope for and more.

people, lead singer Aaron Hutto recalled while on stage during the band’s three year anniversary show at the Hideaway Bar & Grill last Saturday, July 18. At that first gig, the band was asked to turn down several times, and they never played there again, he added with a chuckle.

Things went much better for the quartet this time, as it played at full volume in front of nearly 70 eager fans. The set was concise, with tunes spanning everything from the band’s more straightforward sing-along pop-rock songs to its spacier, psychedelic jams.

They kept the energy level high the whole set with their driving ’60s-inspired organ, as Hutto and bassist Dave Adams bounced around the stage, totally drenched in sweat.

Openers San Kazakgascar brought an entirely different vibe to the evening. They strike a balance between ’90s alt-rock and Middle Eastern music. The music is entirely instrumental, highlighted by alto sax player Tony Passarell’s mind-blowing avant-jazz solos. When he wasn’t playing the horn, Passarell had a grab bag of exotic percussion at his disposal.

The group’s instrumental sound, guitarist Jed Brewer explained, is part of its new direction. They’ve played together for nearly a decade, but it wasn’t until about a year ago that they dropped the singing to focus more on the grooves. The new direction suits them well. They have an incredible range. The slower songs are trance-inducing. Their heavier songs produce an uneasy, dissonant sensation. There’s even a little funky art-rock in the mix.

to be surprising. The delicate mix of time signatures keeps the music engaging without making it too difficult to be accessible.

It’s been four years since the band’s last album, Healthy Fears.

During that time, the group seemed dormant, if not dead, until its Facebook page lit up with talk of a new album and concert.

“This is a thing that we decided to do less than a month ago,” said Juliana Lydell, Dreaded Diamond’s lead vocalist and keyboardist. “It was very out-of-nowhere. We’re both moving in August, and we were like, ‘You know, we should do an EP.’” Not surprisingly, when Dreaded Diamond finally hit the stage again, the crowd went nuts. On this night, the Lydells were backed up by a huge band—the latter of which provided an accompanying huge sound.

“We had some very talented friends on board,” said Juliana.

Keys, guitars, bass, violin and trumpet were along for the ride, and all managed to convey the intricacies of the music perfectly. Unexpected stops and starts thanks to the band’s distinctive and unusual time signatures make for tricky playing, but the band never missed a note.

The group played all the songs on the new EP and closed out the show by jamming on “Death by Fugu” off their last album. They also threw in a cover, Pedro the Lion’s “Magazine.” Audience cheers and a sing-along ensued.

Dreaded Diamond will soon go on hiatus again. School is on the horizon for both siblings come fall, according to Juliana. “I’m going to UC San Diego and my brother’s going to Nashville,” she said. Still, there are plans for a concert next summer.

And will they be playing Sacramento? Juliana says, “Definitely.”

Nirvana may have been the most popular band to break out of Seattle’s early-’90s grunge scene, but Alice in Chains was the heaviest and darkest. A big part of the group’s sound centered around guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell’s interest in dark tones—something influenced by learning Gregorian chants during his days in high school choir. Even Cantrell’s beautiful acoustic songs and harmonies have an undertone of doom. The band was shaken by GRUNGE the untimely demise of original vocalist Layne Staley in 2002, but rebooted with singer William Duvall in 2006. A robust NOISE and groundbreaking avantgarde music scene, according to historian William Burg. This stems in part from a denial of errors made daily over the course of a day, or a life. These are the kind of easily corrected errors that have no longterm negative consequences. In other words, if you accept that most mistakes are repairable, anxiety about decision making will be radically reduced.

You must also tend to any unresolved marital wounds, like blame or resentment. If you don’t, arguments with your new love could follow old patterns. Suddenly, you’ll be arguing with your new flame but repeating the pattern of an old argument with your ex. What a waste The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors just passed a law stating that growing medical cannabis is a “waste of water.” Can you elucidate?

—Wet Willy Yup. Sigh. Last week, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors revised a few parts of the water code to further Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan’s vendetta against medical cannabis users. The new laws state M that anyone growing more than the county limit of LU A E B IO A

MacGlashan told the local press, “According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, a single marijuana plant uses an average a sk420 @ n ewsreview.c om of six gallons of water per day during the growing cycle.” I am not sure where the DFW came up with that number, but I can tell you that marijuana doesn’t need that much water.

This new law is unnecessary, ridiculous and pretty much unenforceable. I don’t see the county BOS going after people for growing too many tomatoes or keeping their lawn green in this drought or taking 30-minute showers. I am not sure why MacGlashan feels the need to continue to persecute cannabis users (Sac County has already banned cannabis dispensaries and outdoor growing), but she and the rest of the BOS really should take a look at themselves and see if they can figure out why they hate marijuana so much. Or all of the MMJ users in the county can get off of their apathetic butts and vote these cannaphobes out of office.

Last time I went to renew my letter of cannabis recommendation, my doctor’s office had a sign offering a recommendation that would allow me to grow 99 plants. Is this a good deal?

ARIES (March 21-April 19): The Latin

motto “carpe diem” shouldn’t be translated as “seize the day,” says author Nicholson Baker. It’s not a battle cry exhorting you to “freaking grab the day in your fist like a burger at a fairground and take a big chomping bite out of it.” The proper translation, according to Baker, is “pluck the day.” In other words, “You should gently pull on the day’s stem, as if it were a wildflower, holding it with all the practiced care of your thumb and the side of your finger, which knows how to not crush easily crushed things—so that the day’s stem undergoes increasing tension and draws to a tightness, and then snaps softly away at its weakest point, and the flower is released in your hand.” Keep that in mind, Aries. I understand you are often tempted to seize rather than pluck, but these days, plucking is the preferable approach.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): When I

talk about “The Greatest Story Never Told,” I’m not referring to the documentary film about singer Lana Del Rey or the debut album of the rap artist Saigon or any other cultural artifact. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

I’m a big fan of the attitude summed up by the command “Be here now!” The world would be more like a sanctuary and less like a battleground if people focused more on the present moment rather than on memories of the past and fantasies of the future. But in accordance with the astrological omens, you are hereby granted a temporary exemption from the “Be here how!” approach. You have a poetic license to dream and scheme profusely about what you want your life to be like in the future. Your word of power is “tomorrow.”

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): A

philanthropist offered $100,000 to the Girl Scouts chapter of Western Washington.

But there were strings attached. The donor specified that the money couldn’t be used to support transgender girls. The Girl Scouts rejected the gift, declaring their intention to empower every girl “regardless of her gender identity, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation.” Do you have that much spunk, Capricorn? Would you turn down aid that would infringe on your integrity?

You may be tested soon. Here’s what I suspect: If you are faithful to your deepest values, even if that has a cost, you will ultimately attract an equal blessing that doesn’t require you to sell out. (P.S. The Girl Scouts subsequently launched an Indiegogo campaign that raised more than $300,000.)

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Charles

Darwin is best known for his book The Origin of Species, which contains his seminal ideas about evolutionary biology.

But while he was still alive, his bestseller was The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms.

The painstaking result of over 40 years’ worth of research, it is a tribute to the noble earthworm and that creature’s crucial role in the health of soil and plants.

It provides a different angle on one of Darwin’s central concerns: How small, incremental transformations that take place over extended periods of time can have monumental effects. This also happens to be one of your key themes in the coming months.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): A researcher at

the University of Amsterdam developed software to read the emotions on faces.

He used it to analyze the expression of the woman in Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting, the “Mona Lisa.” The results suggest that she is 83 percent happy, 9 percent disgusted, 6 percent fearful and 2 percent angry. Whether or not this assessment is accurate, I appreciate its implication that we humans are rarely filled with a single pure emotion. We often feel a variety of states simultaneously. In this spirit, I have calculated your probable mix for the coming days: 16 percent relieved, 18 percent innocent, 12 percent confused, 22 percent liberated, 23 percent ambitious and 9 percent impatient.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18):

Consider the possibility of opening your mind, at least briefly, to provocative influences you have closed yourself off from.

You may need to refamiliarize yourself with potential resources you have been resisting or ignoring, even if they are problematic. I’m not saying you should blithely welcome them in. There still may be good reasons to keep your distance. But I think it would be wise and healthy for you to update your relationship with them.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Over

10,000 species of mushrooms grow in North America. About 125 of those, or 1.25 percent, are tasty and safe to eat. All the others are unappetizing or poisonous, or else their edibility is in question. By my reckoning, a similar statistical breakdown should apply to the influences that are floating your way. I advise you to focus intently on those very few that you know for a fact are pleasurable and vitalizing. Make yourself unavailable for the rest.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “What makes

you heroic?” asked philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Here’s how he answered himself: “simultaneously going out to meet your highest suffering and your highest hope.” This is an excellent way to sum up the test that would inspire you most in the coming weeks, Virgo. The greatest medicine Cancer: a growth of uncontrolled cells in the body, a scourge that affects more than half a million Americans each year—and depending on how well you can spin a yarn, a reliable source of comedy. West Sacramento native and stand-up comedian Jake Daniels’ experiences with the disease for two years now have inspired him and fellow comedian Andrew Ouelette to tour the country performing and raising money for childhood cancer research. The $20,000 campaign goal for the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research was set when the aptly named Knock ’Em Dead Comedy Tour began on April Fools’ Day this year. Daniels won’t begin to tally the money earned until the tour winds down in late July, but the experience has been filmed for a documentary being released early next year. Daniels took some time to wax poetic about his career, without the backdrop of a brick wall and a lone microphone.

Is there a part of your act you’re most proud of?

Probably my cancer joke. “I was engaged to a girl and she left me when I was diagnosed with cancer. I miss her very much, so what I like to do is keep a tampon on top of my TV to remind me of the twat that took my DVD player.”

How soon were you able to turn cancer into comedy?

As soon as I started going through chemo.

It took a few months before I told myself, “I want to put this in my act somewhere,” but I was drained for months though because of treatment, so it took a while before it showed up.

You’ve been on a tour benefiting cancer research. Has anyone been audacious enough to heckle?

Oh yeah. We have hecklers all the time.

Generally every show. I think people feel the urge to participate in the show, thinking it will help. It doesn’t. There was one [heckler] that got really close to the stage and just stood with his arms folded, yelling. I don’t mind them too much. To me, it’s all fun and games.

Have you ever heckled?

No. Being a comic and knowing how most comics feel about hecklers, it’s unethical.

When you heckle you’re pushing yourself into an act that’s not about you.

What was the goal of the Knock ’Em Dead Comedy Tour, other than to raise money for cancer research?

I wanted to help kids understand what they’re going through. They don’t have the |

life experience to completely understand what they’re going through. I want to help with that [as] best I could.

used to talk about making audiences so uncomfortable they’re squirming in their chairs—to me, that’s comedy.

When did you get into stand-up?

If you could only perform stand-up on one late-night show, which one do you pick?

I tried it at first when I was 18, but quit right after I realized I didn’t have enough life experience to be as funny as I wanted to be. So I took a 15-year break, got through some troubles, became more confident and then got back up on stage.

I’d probably go with Conan. I’ve actually seen him do stand-up and he’s a great stand-up comedian. Fallon is a cool and a great entertainer, but not necessarily a stand-up.

Did the first set go well?

Best go-to joke?

It did! It was actually in an Elks Lodge with an audience of old people ranging from 40 to 110. I did a 35-minute set and they actually laughed, seemed to enjoy it.

I do magic in my act. When I feel like I’m losing an audience I’ll pull out my deck of cards and pull off a trick to flip them back in. It usually works.

You had an entire 35 minutes?

Best experience on stage?

It was crazy. I studied my material for a month straight. I had fun doing it, I was technically a headliner. I was invited back the next year but I didn’t want to do it. The whole thing felt like cramming for an exam. I used a lot of street jokes because I didn’t really know what I was doing. I mean, I still don’t know what I’m doing, but I at least feel more confident.

That’s a tough one. I headlined at the Vegas Hard Rock Cafe. Just going on stage and knowing there would be a crowd there waiting for me. There was a lot of positive energy surrounding that night.

Who were your favorite comedians growing up?

Robin Williams, Sam Kinison. I actually used to do a high-energy act like them, but once I got sick the act had to become more laid back. Just didn’t have the energy for it.

Is there a subject you won’t touch?

Worst experience?

I was at a bar full of people but none of them were there for my comedy. Some still laughed, but crowd chatter makes it really hard to keep people engaged. It’s like you’re competing for attention.
