This is a new one and it’s one I had a couple of weeks ago. The breakfast burrito at Bacon & Butter had everything I wanted and it was perfectly simple — all the good breakfast meats and a side of tater tots. It was awesome.

I have to go with the adobada tacos at Chando’s. They are really balanced, savory and always delicious.

My favorite thing to order depends on what the restaurant serves. If it’s an Italian restaurant, I’m definitely going to try their ravioli and pastas.

At an Americana restaurant, I’m going to go with a cheeseburger or steak.

I’m looking for what they do well.

I like the lasagne at Biba Restaurant. It’s one of my favorites. I also like the pasta at Hook & Ladder.

I feel they are both authentic and it reminds me of the food I would eat back in Italy.

That’s a tough one. It’s between de Vere’s fish and chips and Hook & Ladder’s bacon-wrapped tenderloin. I worked at both places before and their chefs taught me numerous things about cooking and taste.

I don’t necessarily order it off a menu, but I get pork bao every morning at Lam Kwong Deli & Market. They are delicious, made fresh every day and are only $1.10 for a great breakfast.

Top seller: Chicken-fried mushroom po’boy A staple at Mother since day one, the chicken-fried mushroom po’boy is sure to satisfy vegetarians and carnivores alike. Sandwiched inside a soft, house-baked roll are battered and fried oyster mushrooms topped with shredded lettuce, house-made pickles and a remoulade-like hot sauce. Executive Chef Matt Masera recommends enjoying it with a side of fried marble potatoes tossed in a sweet and tangy gremolata made with pine nuts, cranberries and

kumquats. Then wash it all down with a glass of fresh-squeezed English pear lemonade.

Chef favoriTe: Baked open-face focaccia The open-face focaccia is one of the newest items on the menu at Mother and its deliciousness must be known to the masses.

The thick, moist bread is baked in-house, then basted with olive oil and smeared with a garlic and potato puree. Masera tops that off with tender, braised broccolini, shaved red onion, Vermont white cheddar, Parmesan cheese, and Brussels sprouts and arugula from Watanabe Farms. “It’s kind of an homage to Zelda’s spinoccoli pizza,” Masera says. “That thing is just a beast — in a good way.”

Sacramento loves its sushi rolls, says Buu “Billy” Ngo, chef and owner of Kru Contemporary Japanese Cuisine restaurant in Midtown. While Kru has plenty of rolled options — made with fresh, local ingredients, including the organic rice from Rue & Forsman Ranch — the restaurant serves up its share of adventurous alternatives, too.

Top seller: Sunshine roll Most sushi lovers prefer their rolls one of two ways: Some like light and refreshing rolls, while others tend to favor the rich and delectable variety. Whichever way you lean, Ngo says the sunshine roll pleases everyone. Stuffed with lemon, Granny Smith apples, shrimp tempura and spicy tuna, then topped with buttery, succulent walu fish, avocado, arare (crispy puffed rice), fried leeks, micro cilantro and creamy sauces, it’s no wonder this roll is a well-known Kru favorite.

Chef favoriTe: Chawanmushi Chawanmushi is just as fun to eat as it is to say. Though a common Japanese dish, the steamed savory egg custard is often overlooked by diners at Kru. The soft, velvety custard is served warm in a bowl with house-made lobster dashi (Japanese stock), snow crab, shrimp, pickled shiitake mushrooms, and chopped green onion and nori. Unlike other custards, Ngo suggests chawanmushi be eaten as part of your meal. Its ethereal richness is the perfect warm, comforting dish after a few bites of light sushi.

Baguettes deli Co-owners paula and larry hunley

Paula and Larry Hunley have poured everything they have into Baguettes Deli, and it shows. From the Carlos Lopez murals to the bread baked fresh each morning, Baguettes is a labor of love for the Hunleys.

Top seller: Holiday turkey sandwich When Paula Hunley sought to make the holiday turkey sandwich, she envisioned a seasonal offering.

Staying true to Baguettes’ mission, everything from the ciabatta roll to the cranberry jam is made in-house.

With roasted turkey, stuffing and thick, creamy gravy, the hulk of a sandwich is like “an entire Thanksgiving meal in your mouth,” Paula Hunley says. It was previously only on the menu from Halloween through New Year’s, but customers begged for the dish all year long.

After three years of customer requests, Paula Hunley decided to keep it on the menu permanently.

And, boy, are her customers happy she did. (Sandwich pictured on cover.)

Chef favoriTe: French toast You might not think to order breakfast from a deli, but the French toast at Baguettes should make you reconsider. “Just as bread makes the sandwich or the bun makes a burger, oh my God, the bread definitely makes the French toast,” Larry Hunley says. Made from day-old baguettes, the French toast is made with eggs from the Hunley’s chicken farm, sweet honey and cinnamon, and is topped with mixed dried berries, slivered almonds, powdered sugar and rich syrup. Enjoy it with a side of fresh fruit or roasted potatoes topped with cheddar cheese. And don’t forget your mimosa!
