astor Anthony Sadler of Shiloh Baptist Church in Oak Park saw great potential in “Ricky,” a bright, good-natured teen from a rough Sacramento neighborhood who had recently had his first arrest. To help steer Ricky away from the wrong path, Sadler convinced him to work around the church once a week, giving the young man an opportunity to earn a sense of accomplishment and a little pocket money. Ricky went on to work alongside Sadler in a community garden project and seemed determined to turn his life in a positive direction. He was sentenced to probation and has had no more trouble with the law.

Ricky is just one of the many success stories of the Cops and Clergy program, started by Sacramento Police Department Chief Sam Somers and several area pastors in January 2013. Clergy have influence and credibility in neighborhoods that may not completely trust police, says Lt. Roman J. Murrietta, the Sacramento Police Department program administrator.

“I don’t think anyone could have imagined the things that would have transpired in our country since then and just how important this program has become,” Murrietta says. He notes that Sacramento has been working to built trust in communities long before anyone here had heard of Ferguson. Thanks to Cops and Clergy, Murrietta says he and other officers have visited many congregations over the last two years to begin “to have those tough con-

versations” about race, trust and the troubling incarceration rate for black men.

The program is currently active in the South Sacramento and Oak Park areas, with plans for citywide expansion. The program is supported by a grant from The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities initiative.

ronments, and they decide that getting things quick and fast is better than delayed gratification,” Sadler explains. “We’re looking for opportunities to act as a resource for them, whether they need tutoring in school, need to get their GED, or they’re applying for college and having trouble getting past admissions.”

The program not only benefits the youth it serves, but also reduces crime in the greater community.

“We all want a safe place in which to raise our families,” Sadler says.

Participating pastors visit schools, jails, juvenile halls and sometimes family homes to reach at-risk teens and young adults who have been referred to them by parents, teachers, law enforcement or others.

BuIldIng HEalTHy COmmunITIES In 2010, The California Endowment launched a 10-year, $1 billion plan to improve the health of 14 challenged communities across the state. Over the 10 years, residents, community-based organizations and public institutions will work together to address the socioeconomic and environmental challenges contributing to the poor health of their communities.

Sociology students assist the clergy with case management, follow-up and connecting individuals to resources in the community that provide an alternative to crime.

A better ending My poor grandma. After 92 years on this earth, she spent her final days in hospice care, under a spell of powerful pain medications, deprived of food and water, unconscious (and hopefully not in a lot of pain), waiting for her time to come. Waiting to die.

For days. For more than a week.

Awful. That’s how I felt while sitting with her in a hospital room in nearby Auburn this past summer.

Staying by my mom and family’s sides past midnight. Watching my grandma ease toward death. For days. For more than a week.

It was difficult to visualize the grandma who’d bring me microwaved warm milk and Nilla Wafer cookies before bed when I was a kid.

Who’d refer to her couch as a “Chesterfield”—and would warn me to never put my feet on said Chesterfield. Ever. Who’d sip gin and tonics while watching Joe Montana lead the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl championships. And who never forgot your birthday.

Grandma—we actually called her Nonnie, since her parents hailed from the old country—was a stubborn single mom with the gentlest heart. I think about her life and the memories are warm.

But then there is the memory of her final weeks with us: awful.

It makes zero sense that my grandma didn’t have the right to die on her own terms. That she was forced to live comatose for hundreds of hours as whatever it is that gives us soul slowly departed.

That’s why Melinda Welsh’s cover story this week, titled “How to die in California” (page 14), is crucial: The Golden State needs to let its residents die with dignity. For the sake of the dying, and also their families. We deserve a better ending.

In an effort to stop, I have painted my nails or have gotten a nice manicure.

I think that will definitely keep you from biting your nails.

Eating M&M’s. I eat them all of the time. It is my favorite candy. I realized it was a habit a couple of years ago, but I still eat them. When I am happy, I eat M&M’s.

It got to the point that my parents finally had to actually put Vaseline on my fingertips to keep me from biting them. They tried chili and other such things.

They tried everything.

There was something about the Vaseline; I kept looking at my nails and saying, “Nope.”

Drunks love vice and laziness Re “Guide to vice and laziness” (SN&R Feature Story, January 15): I’m writing this drunk and hungover. I haven’t read the issue yet, but I wanted to tell you a story that isn’t really a story, but I don’t care. I am very happy right now.

I woke up this morning, after getting about three hours of sleep to a knock on the door. Some guy wanting a blow job. Actually, not just some guy, but a guy I regularly hook up with, but he was about an hour early. … After that I went to my local corner store to buy some beer. Well, I don’t think I’ve laughed, genuinely laughed, in the almost 10 years I’ve lived in Sacramento until I saw the cover of your most recent issue.

Thank you! I love the cover! … I just wanted to thank you for making me realize that, at least for the moment, I don’t absolutely hate and despise the place where I live. Please continue to challenge yourselves and produce the kind of happy weirdness I saw on that cover. It really made my day.

SWAT at the door

A customer-service supervisor at DOU filed a false complaint with the police, setting in motion a search warrant served by two tanks (ironically called Peace Keepers) and 21 SWAT officers (ironically called Peace Officers) fashionably attired in the latest Kevlar with assault weapons locked and loaded.

Imagine being thrown face down onto concrete with a boot on your back, being handcuffed with unforgiving plastic ties like a common criminal. Nothing of interest or relevance was found or seized during the two-hour defilement of our home, and yet we had the dubious privilege of a 12-hour accommodation in county jail for delaying an investigation.

Sadly missing from this painfully objective article was the human element: I believe it is impossible for someone who hasn’t experienced this degree of indignity to understand the lasting psychological effects. There is an irrevocable loss of trust in the very people who are there to protect you, and an irrepressible anger. May you never get your morning wake-up call by SWAT! Melissa Andrews Sacramento

Re “The standoff” by Raheem F. Hosseini (SN&R News, January 8): In light of recent events and the militarization of our own police department, you must understand that you needn’t do something wrong for SWAT to show up at your house. Apparently, they are now available to serve search warrants.

We challenged the Department of Utilities around their practice of charging for services they either fail to deliver or cannot possibly deliver. We expected due process.

An independent hearing was a travesty, and when the City Council refused to serve in their capacity as an appellate body, the situation escalated.

Bartenders beware?

Just before midnight this past Sunday, a patron got pissed at an undisclosed bar near K and 20th streets when a bartender wouldn’t give him any more booze (probably because he was too drunk). “The suspect brandished a knife,” the police report states, and responding officers staved off any violence.

Kudos for the bartender for doing the right thing—and good thing there’s a bar between you and the drunkies.

But one suit challenging the legality of the city’s $300 million-plus arena subsidy has quietly been working its way through the court for more than a year.

This suit, brought by lawyer Patrick Soluri—on behalf of residents Isaac Gonzalez, Jim Cathcart and Julian Camacho—alleges that the city has been dishonest about the structure and purpose of the Kings arena deal.

“This is such an important and basic issue,” says Soluri. “Did the city use the framework of the arena deal to subsidize the purchase of the team? If they did, that’s fraud.”

Last year, Assistant City Manager John Dangberg and Mayor Kevin Johnson both took the stand and acknowledged that would-be Kings owners, including Vivek Ranadive, explicitly asked the city for a subsidy to help buy the team. The city’s financial help would make up the difference between the price Ranadive and company paid for the Kings, and the actual value of the team.

“Well, it was basically stated that [members of the Sacramento investor group] felt that the overpayment for the team might require the city to play a larger role in the financing of the arena because of the economics,” Dangberg explained to the court. Then adding, “We said, ‘That isn’t going to happen.’”

But Soluri says that it did happen, and he says the city has recently turned over some important evidence showing that it happened.

In recent weeks, the city has dumped thousands of pages of documents on Soluri and his clients. “The vast majority of it is garbage.

You’ll see the same document repeated hundreds of times,” Soluri said. A typical example: instead of turning over an Excel spreadsheet file, the city will print out the spreadsheet as 800 PDF pages.

But some of the documents are more illuminating. For example there’s an internal city memo that spells out what the Kings owners wanted: “Investor group wants $258 million plus additional City assets (land, entitlements, City loan forgiveness, etc.) to offset the difference in the purchase price of the Kings vs. their perceived value of Kings. They believe the difference is $150-$200 million. City is willing to invest the proceeds of the parking monetization. Investor group may want the 3,700 parking spaces at the Downtown Plaza.”

If those numbers sound familiar, it’s because that’s largely what the investors got.

Bites is just going pause here a moment to marvel at the idea that Dangberg, who makes a base salary of $176,000 a year, believes he’s getting paid to hide public information.

Assistant City Attorney Matt Ruyak reiterated to Bites that the city’s significant financial help with the arena “had nothing to do with the purchase of the team.”

“The ownership group asked. And we rejected that request,” Ruyak added.

But what’s the difference, really, if the city calls it a “subsidy” or an “investment”? When you add it up, the Kings owners got exactly what they asked for.

And if the city manager’s office and the mayor really did the righteous thing, why wasn’t Ranadive’s demand ever disclosed to the public? Didn’t the public deserve to know this information while judging the prudence of the city’s “investment”? (And why is the city manager’s office telling staff to shield arena information from public records requests?)

This lawsuit may not change anything about the arena deal going forward. It certainly won’t change many minds. Arena fans will see it as a nuisance; skeptics will say it confirms what they already knew.

But at least it will have produced some information that ought have been disclosed to the public a long time ago. Ω

’Den of distress Neighbors lob more conflict-of-interest allegations against county supervisor At least two opponents of a low-income apartment complex slated for their Arden Arcade neighborhood have leveled conflictby of-interest charges against their representative, Sacramento Raheem County Supervisor Susan Peters.

“She’s in bed with whatever developer comes through the door,” said Michael Seaman, a resident of nearby Cottage Park. “We know that.”

By that, Seaman means that Arden Arcade has become a dumping ground for massage parlors, liquor stores and other unwanted projects that drive up crime and lower property values.

The latest development in question is a 148-unit apartment complex slated for a vacant, rectangular parking lot on Butano Drive. Butano Apartments, as it’s called, would erect a quartet of three-story buildings in a “pod-like” design, surrounding a 3,700-square-foot clubhouse and swimming pool. The single-story clubhouse would house a fitness studio and planned after-school program, according to the Community Development Department’s staff report.

While acknowledging the need for affordable housing, Seaman and his fellow neighborhood critics say the county is segregating it all in one area. “It’s very simplistic to say, ‘Oh, these are NIMBY people who don’t want low-income housing in their neighborhood,” he said. “The truth is we’re surrounded.”

Despite a recommended no-vote and a threatened appeal from its Arden Arcade advisory council, the county’s Planning Commission last month ruled the project was in compliance with zoning and residential guidelines, setting up a January 27 showdown this week before supervisors.

Seaman and Del Paso Manor resident Carl Dolk say Peters should recuse herself next week because of her connection to project applicant Anton Development Company’s founder and president, Steve Eggert.

Both Peters and Eggert served on a finance committee for Republican Doug Ose’s unsuccessful congressional campaign last year, while Eggert was one of 49 hosts of a fundraising committee for Peters’ 2012 reelection bid. In 2005, Peters named Eggert her alternate on the Sacramento Transportation Authority Board.

Seaman pointed to a still-open investigation by the California Fair Political Practices Commission, which is looking into whether Peters should have recused herself from voting on dozens of projects around Mather Field because of her ownership interests there.

Peters said she would defer to the county counsel’s recommendation. In an emailed statement, Peters also said there are signs that new investment is starting to perk up Arden Arcade’s fortunes following the recession. Ω

Downtown property owners are being asked to tax themselves to build the 3.3-mile streetcar line, connecting downtown and West Sacramento. The city of Sacramento has mailed out ballots for an advisory vote by property owners, which are due back in mid-February. If the property owners say yes, the question will be put to registered voters who live inside the boundaries of the proposed streetcar district.

SN&R had several questions about the costs and benefits of the proposed line.

Why streetcars?

Three reasons, says city planner Fedolia “Sparky” Harris. First, the city’s general plan calls for restoring streetcar lines, which were

the premier mode of public transit in the pre-auto days. Second, the federal government is giving away lots of money to cities to build streetcar systems. Finally, Harris says, streetcars produce “pretty significant” economic benefits, in the form of increased development. More on that idea below.

Who is going to pay for it?

The cost of the line is $150 million. About $75 million is expected to come from federal grants for bus and rail transit. That funding isn’t guaranteed, but if the feds don’t put it in the budget for 2016, the boosters plan to re-apply in 2017. The next biggest chunk, about $30 million, will come from a proposed new property-tax assessment district downtown. The tax will vary based on a property’s distance from the new streetcar line—up to three blocks away.

Another $25 million is coming from West Sacramento, where voters approved a sales-tax increase in 2008 to help fund streetcars. The city of Sacramento agreed to kick in $7 million, the state and the county of Sacramento are being asked to contribute $10 million and $3 million, respectively.

No, streetcars aren’t colliding with buses. But while streetcars are popular with property owners on the proposed West Sacramento-downtown route, some say better bus service could spark growth and positive economic impact.

City Hall watchdog group Eye on Sacramento raised alarms when the city released documents showing that the Kings would pay only five cents per square foot on the arena building—a third of what other commercial properties would pay—and nothing at all on the land under the arena. But now the city says the lower building rate was just a typo, and that the arena will pay the full rate on the building. However, the Kings won’t pay any streetcar tax on the land under the arena. That’s because the city holds the title to the land.

What is the difference between streetcars and light rail?

Light rail is a commuter service, moving people from the city center to suburbs, while the streetcar serves to circulate people around downtown.

Streetcars are single cars, and often have a much lower step than a light-rail car. But in many ways streetcars and light rail look very similar. And in downtown areas like Sacramento, lightrail trains may stop about as frequently as streetcars.

Streetcars will operate in traffic along with the cars and trucks downtown. That’s part of the reason that critics say streetcars are a poor transit choice. “Circulator streetcars are designed to go slow,” says Gregory Thompson, a transportation-planning scholar and chairman of the light rail transit committee of the national BEFORE

Thompson is in the process of moving to Sacramento from Florida, and was invited by Eye on Sacramento to review the plan.

Because of the streetcar’s low speeds and circuitous route, Thompson predicts ridership will be low. “This is not well thought-out as a transportation mode.

It’s basically a piece of kinetic art.”

But Sacramento Regional Transit’s general manager Mike Wiley calls streetcars a “pedestrian accelerator,” extending the range that people can walk and explore and spend money downtown.

Streetcar proponents estimate it will only cost a dollar to ride, a big difference from the $2.50 it costs to get on a light-rail train. But RT had $1 fares in the central city as recently as 2009, and with the introduction of its new “connect card,” new distance-based fares are possible.

Who will operate the streetcar?

Not clear. Many of the same downtown developers who are pushing the streetcar have also recently been vocally critical of Regional Transit, and called on the agency to “clean up its act.”

It’s not clear if that nonprofit would be required to open its books to the public or comply with public records and public meeting laws.

It’s also not clear where the operating budget for the streetcar system is going to come from. According to

Harris, it will cost up to $4 million every year to run the streetcar system.

About $1 million will come from that West Sacramento sales tax. About $1 million could come from fares. The source of other $2 million annually is to be determined. Harris said the rest of the operating budget might come out of Regional Transit’s budget.

Do streetcars really spur development?

A paid consultant for the streetcar project estimates that the line will generate $235 million to $441 million in increased property values in Sacramento, and $78 million to $154 million in West Sacramento.

Unfortunately, the consultant’s model is something of a black box, and phone calls to ask about the model’s assumptions went unreturned. Thompson says there are no empirical studies showing circulator streetcars have an impact on property development.

Portland is cited as a streetcar success story. But as noted in Eye on Sacramento’s report, there are a wide array of tax incentives and other policies that can be credited with the growth in Portland’s urban neighborhoods.

In short, Thompson says streetcars are frequently credited with encouraging investment where it likely would have happened anyway. “Everybody knows that streetcars encourage property development. But unfortunately, that’s just mythology.”

The streetcar economic study also did not compare possible economic benefits of less costly transit improvements downtown, like better bus service, increased light-rail service, or reduction in central-city fares.

On the other hand, one of downtown’s biggest property owners, David Taylor, says he is convinced the streetcar will make him money. He says downtown property owners can charge higher rents in their properties along the streetcar line. “That increase in rent will produce a return four to five times the assessment. I think it’s worth it,” Taylor remarked at a recent pitch to property owners. Ω

Homelessness advocacy and services outfit Sacramento Steps Forward is looking for 400 volunteers to help sheltered and unsheltered homeless people and families this week, on Wednesday, January 28. Groups of four, plus one lawenforcement officer, will cover areas all over the county to survey and count homeless people.

Steps Forward says this count is important because it helps determine the amount of federal funding Sacramento receives for homelessness services.

The annual county homeless count has been criticized in recent years. Some say the survey overlooks thousands of regional homeless people and individuals.

Wind in Midtown The Sacramento region’s only service provider for homeless youth is moving to Midtown.

After eight months of real-estate hunting, Wind Youth Services has finally found itself a new home, the third floor of an office building at 1722 J Street.

“It’s so central. It’s so acceptable. We’re right on the bus lines and just a couple of blocks away from light rail,” said Wind development director Sarah Mullins.

Following numerous funding setbacks and a cited need for a more centralized location, Wind shut the doors on its old north Sacramento neighborhood drop-in center in May. At the time, Wind director Suzi Dotson told SN&R she and her board anticipated reopening the central city location by August. But a potential landlord backed out “literally at the 12th hour,” said Mullins, and the search dragged.

That turned out to be a blessing in disguise. A conversation with the owner of the building where Wind rents its administrative space led to the owner suggesting his other property at J and 17th streets. A lease was signed at the beginning of November, and the ensuing weeks have been spent remodeling the building’s third floor, where Wind will unite its drop-in center, administrative and counseling services. Mullins described significant modifications to add shower and bathroom facilities and a kitchen. If construction finishes on time, Wind is scheduled to reopen for business at the new space this week.

How to die in California Brittany Maynard’s high-profile death may help usher in a right-to-die option for terminally ill patients in the Golden State

T

he call comes on your cell when you least expect it, while in line for coffee at Peet’s in Midtown.

The doctor, a specialist from out of town, says “The telephone isn’t the ideal way to deliver test results, but ...”

You urge him to proceed. So, he tells you about your brain cancer.

It has metastasized with a vengeance.

His words are both shocking and anticipated. You know you are hearing your own death sentence.

You have fought valiantly for years to be rid of this disease. You’ve endured the onslaught of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy. Your loved ones rallied in support.

You’ve done everything you can to continue living fully. Now, you find yourself at a new stage, with six months to live. You’re aware that people who die with your disease may face distressing events before the end: seizures, loss of functions, dementia, anguish and undeniable pain.

What are your options in the above hypothetical?

In California, you could choose evermore-aggressive interventions in the unlikely hope of a cure. You could greenlight a medical trial and perhaps extend your life, and aid science. You could choose palliative care and hospice, in the unassailable theory they may provide you a gentler exit. You could even exercise your right to refuse food and drink, a difficult path that leads to death in seven to 10 days.

Or you could move to Oregon.

There, you would have an extra option.

You could choose to end your own life, at the time and in the place of your choosing, with legally prescribed, fast-acting barbiturates provided by a doctor.

As of right now, this final option is illegal in California. In fact, your loved ones could face criminal prosecution for aiding you in pursuit of it here.

But all this may be changing.

Just this week, Davis-based state Sen. Lois Wolk announced legislation that would bring an “end-of-life choices” law to California. The law would be fundamentally like Oregon’s 1997 Death With Dignity Act—requiring an adult patient to have residency in the state and two doctors in agreement that he or she has less than six months to live and full mental competency. Other safeguards Wolk referred to as “crucial”—for both patients and physicians—will also be folded in.

“It’s time,” she said. “No one should have to go through horrific pain and prolonged suffering when the end is clear.”

A longtime advocate for more compassionate end-of-life scenarios, Wolk authored a groundbreaking 2008 law that provides seriously ill patients with a new mechanism—Physicians Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment, or POLST—to ensure that their wishes are honored regarding end-of-life care.

But Wolk, the state senate’s new majority whip, will likely face a tough battle this time.

The right-to-die subject has been exceedingly controversial when it’s come up in California’s past.

So why introduce it now?

Because of Brittany Maynard, the 29-year-old East Bay newlywed who, diagnosed with late-stage brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme) last spring, became the face of a movement when she chose to relocate with her husband to Oregon so as to end her life under that state’s Death With Dignity Act. “Doctors prescribed full brain radiation,” she wrote in an essay for CNN. “The hair on my scalp would have been singed off. My scalp would be left covered with first-degree burns. … My family and I reached a heartbreaking conclusion: There is no treatment that would save my life, and the recommended treatments would have destroyed the time I had left.”

Young, attractive and articulate, Maynard’s passionate defense of her right to leave life on her own terms went viral.

Her YouTube video drew 13 million views.

Her saga was written up in hundreds of newspapers and appeared on the cover of People magazine. Maynard partnered with the nation’s premier “aid in dying” nonprofit, the Denver-based Compassion & Choices, and triggered an outpouring of new energy and funds to its cause.

Ultimately, the sympathy generated by Maynard’s story pushed the Death With Dignity movement forward in ways the country is just starting to see play out.

A month after Maynard’s November death, the already substantial public support for Death with Dignity took a significant bounce. A Harris Poll found that 74 percent of American adults now believe terminally ill patients in great pain should have the right to bring their lives to a close. Even “physicianassisted suicide”—a term controversial in

right-to-die circles—now has a 72-percent favorable rating.

“I think [Brittany Maynard] deserves a lot of credit for being willing to be so public about her dying,” said Wolk, who said the young woman’s story was “very much” part of why she and co-author state Senator Bill Monning chose to introduce legislation now instead of later.

“People were very moved by her story,” said Wolk. “It struck a chord.

“To be forced to set up residency outside California to relieve yourself from suffering?

That’s not right.”

‘Things can G O r e a l ly w r o n g ’ With her short brown hair, eloquent eyes and gracious smile, Jennifer Glass welcomed a rain-soaked reporter into her San Mateo home last month, ushered her to a seat in front of a cozy fire by the Christmas tree, and handed over a cup of steaming coffee. The warm environs seemed to alleviate the difficulty in speaking openly about the topic at hand: Glass’ late-stage lung cancer and statistically probable decline, and death, from the disease.

A formidable communications professional during her working career—with stints at Oracle, Intuit, Sony and Facebook—Glass married the man of her dreams, Harlan Seymour, in August of 2012. They settled into family life. Four months later, while giving her a back rub, Seymour found a lump on her neck that felt “like little peas in a row.”

In her own case, Glass is frightened by the possibility she may be forced to “drown in my own lung fluid in front of my family in my final days. … My quality of life in whatever time I have left would be vastly improved if I knew [a legally prescribed lethal drug] was an option for me under the law.

“If my life is not tolerable, if I’m wracked with pain, if I can’t control my functions, if my system is failing … and I have no recourse?

That’s the worst thing I can think of. Because things can go really wrong.”

If her disease runs its course, Glass says she knows what it would take to move to Oregon and, like Maynard, take the steps necessary to be approved for self-administration of a lethal prescription.

“But I really hope it doesn’t come to a decision where I have to leave my home,” she said.

“Particularly because if it comes to that, it’s a decision I’m going to have to make when I’m already very sick.”

‘A p e r s o n a l , i n t e n s e experience with dying’ Toni Broaddus entered Café Bernardo near the Capitol on K Street, primed for her first in a long string of meetings scheduled that day with legislators, staffers and local officials. It was November 19, 2014—the date would have marked Brittany Maynard’s 30th birthday.

“Brittany’s story really galvanized the movement,” said Broaddus, an attorney and social-justice advocate who now directs the Compassion & Choices campaign in California.

“Her story has really moved us forward in ways we never could have predicted or expected.

We have seen a huge increase in supporters, in donors, in volunteers.”

Broaddus, previously a leader in the state’s marriage-equality movement, said Compassion & Choices has set a goal of having California join the five other states in the country—Oregon, Washington, Montana, Vermont and New Mexico—that have legalized aid in dying. The group plans to assist in the passage of California legislation or mount a grassroots effort to get the matter put before voters in 2016.

Such efforts have failed in the past, however.

Attempts to legalize assisted dying in California have been beaten back many times over, thanks to fierce opposition from organizations like the Catholic Church, with its moral authority, and the California Medical Association, with its well-financed lobby. In 1992, the statewide ballot measure Proposition 161 went down with 46 percent of the vote.

The most recent legislative attempt, Assembly Bill 374 by Assemblywoman Patty Berg, was taken off the table for lack of support at the end of the 2007 session. Famously, the bill had preachers speaking out in opposition from the pulpits in California. Then-Assembly speaker, Fabian Nunez, actually described getting a call from his churchgoing mother at that time, urging him to reconsider his support for the bill.

that had metastasized to the lymph nodes in her neck. At the time of her diagnosis, the American Cancer Society estimated the likelihood of her five-year survival rate at just 5 percent. The then 49-year-old underwent radiation and two aggressive rounds of chemotherapy, causing her to lose her thick brown hair. Her cancer is, thankfully, now in a period of “treated containment.” She takes the oral chemotherapy drug Tarceva daily that allows “two to three good hours” per day, she says.

The efficacy of Tarceva tends to be two-to-four years before cancer mutates around it.

Glass, who developed a following for her YouTube video “A Photo a Day: One Year with Cancer” and for blogging about her disease on The Huffington Post, has strong beliefs about how she wants to go when her time comes. “I believe I should have the legal choice to end my life calmly, peacefully and with dignity,” she said.

Like Maynard, the tech-savvy Glass wants to bring the right-to-die debate to a generation that’s become accustomed to making its own choices when it comes to certain issues. “It’s like what we’ve seen with gay marriage,” she said referring to the sea change in public opinion and policy on that issue in a short time span.

“There’s a greater desire for personal choice ... and quality of life. And that has to include end of life.”

When first diagnosed, Glass contacted Compassion & Choices—which was responsible for creating and passing Oregon’s Death With Dignity Act 17 years ago. She sought advice and counsel. A volunteer came to her home and explained advance-care directives, POLST forms, the role of hospice and what was and wasn’t legal in California when it comes to the end of life. Glass, who had been an advocate on the right-to-die issue even before her diagnosis, was thankful to have that information going into the physical and emotional fight of her life.

After her marathon cancer treatment was completed, Glass contacted Compassion & Choices a second time and asked how she could help their effort to make aid in dying legal in California.

She is unapologetic when explaining why hospice and palliative care alone are not sufficient to calm her fears about the possibility of dying in pain or discomfort.

“There is some exceptionally fine hospice care,” she said, “but it’s a spectrum. Sometimes it’s simply not possible to eliminate or manage a dying person’s pain.”

People like Glass don’t much like the word suicide—as in “physician-assisted suicide”— imprinted over the right-to-die option. Suicidal people are sad or depressed and want to die, she said. “I’m doing everything I can to live! But I want control over my death if it’s going to go in a really ugly way.”

She and others suggest “aid in dying” or “death with dignity” as alternative word choices to “physician-assisted suicide.”

Glass admitted to a kind of black market that exists in states where physician-assisted dying is illegal. “Since becoming part of the cancer community, I’ve known people who are doing whatever they think it’s going to take to end their lives when they want to, including hoarding pills. That can be dangerous if it’s not managed.

“It’s the fear, the fear about how this is going to end.”

position on new legislation. The organization, which officially represents just 30 percent of the state’s physicians, has claimed before that assisting in a death is in conflict with a doctor’s ethical responsibility to “do no harm.”

Also, the doctors’ group holds that most pain at the end of life can be controlled through medication and comfort care in a hospice environment.

However, a recent poll of 17,000 American doctors by Medscape, for the first time, found physicians supporting death with dignity for those with “incurable and terminal” disease by a 54-percent majority.

Also expected to oppose Wolk’s legislation are some in the disability-rights community, who say such a law could open up the potential for abuse by insurers or family members.

Patients might be pushed to an early death for the convenience of others, they say. In response to the groundswell of media on Maynard’s story, Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund senior policy analyst Marilyn Golden wrote: “For every case such as [hers] there are hundreds—or thousands—more people who could be significantly harmed if assisted suicide is legal.”

Broaddus disagrees, based on 17 years of data from California’s neighbor to the north. “People talk about concerns about abuse for vulnerable populations,” she said. “But the reality is, that hasn’t happened in Oregon.”

For her, California’s lack of a law simply doesn’t make sense. “It’s hard to understand given the support in the state and the state’s usual leading role on this kind of social-justice issue.”

For Assemblywoman Wolk, the fate of the bill will depend, in part, on individual legislators’ own personal experiences with death and dying.

“More and more people have had a personal, intense experience with dying—either a relative or a friend … and they want it to be different, they know it should be different,” she said.

The legislator pointed out that the Oregon law “is broadly accepted and not that heavily used,” with about 60 percent of the people who obtain a prescription ever actually taking it.

“It’s a comfort for people to know that if it got really bad, it’s there,” she said. “That seems to make people feel better. Just having it is enough.”

‘You’re scared and stressed’ Barbara and Doug Wilson met in 1967 while residents in UC Davis’ first co-ed dorms. They fell in love, married, launched careers and raised two daughters, never once leaving the safe haven provided them by the city of Davis. How could the couple have known that security was fleeting, that they were not destined to accompany each other into their elder years?

In 2004, Doug, age 57, was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer. At first—thanks to two rounds of surgery and chemotherapy—his disease went into remission. But in 2007, the cancer returned. With Barbara constantly at his side, he spent the next five-plus years in and out of infusion rooms, clinics, radiation centers and hospitals undertaking every treatment and intervention doctors recommended to help save his life.

After her diagnosis, Glass received intravenous chemotherapy for advanced lung cancer. “If I’m wracked with pain, if I can’t control my functions, if my system is failing … and I have no recourse? That’s the worst thing I can think of.”

It’s the fear, the fear about how this is going to end.

“He was amazing,” said Barbara of her husband. “He had the most positive attitude. He did not want to die.”

But eventually, in the spring of 2013, the couple chose to enter hospice care, more than anything because it would get them access to equipment—like a battery-operated oxygen tank—that would help Wilson attend his daughter’s April wedding in Santa Cruz. “Doug walked my daughter down the aisle,” said Barbara, choking back tears. On morphine for pain, he gave his father-of-the-bride speech and, she said, “did the father-daughter dance.”

By the following Friday, he was gone.

Barbara, now 66, looks back with disquiet and some unease on her husband’s death process those last five days of his life. “The image of a wonderful, peaceful end of life with loved ones around … well, that didn’t seem to happen,” she said.

Home hospice provided qualified people checking in once a day, she said, and availability in emergencies. But basically, she felt left to her own resources, in the company of her two daughters and son-in-law, without experience or knowledge in how to attend to a dying loved one.

“I think it’d be the same with any hospice,” she said.

“You’re scared and stressed because this is your loved one,” she said. “You don’t know what to do.” She described her husband as on-again, off-again agitated—he was bleeding internally, with his liver shutting down. “We felt we were incapable of dealing with him properly,” she said. She described frustration at her inability to help make him comfortable. She feared his pain and what would happen if she gave him too much or too little morphine.

Eventually, in a hospital bed in the living room with his family surrounding him, her husband took his last breath. But the day-by-day countdown to Wilson’s end remains a fairly traumatic memory for his beloved wife.

The Wilsons’ story illuminates the reality that the actual process of dying can take time and be upsetting, confusing and painful for both patient and caregivers, especially those who are facing death’s tests for the first time.

Though Barbara believes her husband would not have chosen to take his own life at the end even if it had been legal, she now personally believes that people should have a right to that option.

“Until you walk in those shoes, you just don’t know. … When it’s my time, I do not want to suffer,” she said, “especially after watching Doug.”

Why is it so hard?

Why is it so very difficult for modern society—with its medical aptitude, technological advantages and ability to fulfill desires—to succeed at delivering a “good death” when its something most everybody wants?

In his recent bestseller Being Mortal, Atul Gawande takes a stab at an answer by laying out the limits of medicine and inadequacies of medical school in preparing physicians to help patients deal with the stark reality of death.

Doctors have been trained to find cures and “to win,” he writes. This simple fact— along with an American health-care system that seems to encourage excessive treatment—continues to make a peaceful death an elusive goal for many people.

For example: Though most people want to pass away at home surrounded by loved ones, 70 percent die in a hospital, nursing home or long-term-care facility after a long struggle with advanced or incurable disease.

Marge Ginsburg, executive director of the Sacramento-based Center for Healthcare Decisions and noted advocate for better end-oflife outcomes, has spent the last two decades pushing for more compassion for patients as they near death.

“You’d think 20 years later we’d have gotten this solved,” she said. “But no, we haven’t.”

Ginsburg, whose nonprofit organization won’t be taking a position on the new Death With Dignity legislation, reminds that California’s end-of-life problem is much larger in scope than the debate over one potential last-resort option. The importance of advancecare directives and the ongoing push for family members, physicians and patients to have candid conversations before crisis hits can not be overstated, she said.

“The ICU is not the time to start finding out what your family members want,” she said.

Still, some see a shift occurring in the endof-life landscape—perhaps because members of an aging baby-boomer population have begun to see their final acts in sight. Indeed, more doctors are now being trained in palliative care, which focuses on pain relief over cures for terminally ill patients. Also, there’s an increased use of advance-care directives and POLST forms as well as an uptick in the number of individuals dying in hospice care.

Meanwhile, over to the side, is the more controversial subject of a California law that would allow people who meet its dire criteria to self-administer lethal prescription drugs.

Could a shift be occurring there, too?

Wolk believes the answer is yes.

“It’s changing,” she said.

“We have to learn. Doctors have to learn.

At the end of life, there is a range of things that can happen. We haven’t wanted to think about that. We haven’t wanted to talk about that. But it’s time.”

Those who followed Brittany Maynard’s story this past year—with its tragedy, awareness and resolve—might tend to agree with Wolk that things have to change, that peace of mind for terminally ill patients shouldn’t depend on whether they live in Oregon or not.

Like Maynard, Jennifer Glass seems utterly brave and self-aware as she moves forward and, despite her disease, attempts to live a full life regardless of the harsh lesson mortality threatens to teach her. A few weeks shy of a late December CT scan to check for recurrence of her lung cancer, she said, “I feel fine now. But any minute things could go a different way.

“My great hope is that, in the next 12 to 24 months, if my disease runs its course, then I will have the legal option to procure prescribed medicine and end my life, by my own choice, by my own hand, legally, in my own home.”

And then, as if preparing for an upcoming debate, Glass posed a question to an imagined opponent of a California end-of-life choices law: “Nobody’s saying you have to do this if you don’t want to do it,” she said, “But who are you to say that I can’t?”

here’s a rainbow that lives inside the Baker’s Donut’s display case. One doughnut wears a bright orange, Thai tea glaze and Fruity Pebbles cereal. Another is electric blue mint, topped with crushed Oreos. There’s also a red velvet croissant-doughnut.

A shiny purple color comes from ube, the Filipino-beloved purple yam.

Oh, didn’t you hear? Maple bacon doughnuts are totally passe.

The South Sacramento shop’s interior isn’t anything special. It’s small, barren.

There’s a well-utilized drive-thru. Not the sort of place you’d expect people to visit from San Diego, or that would become a mandatory stopping point from the Bay Area to Tahoe.

A hip, tattooed 20-something takes a bite of a cereal-topped creation.

“You know what’s crazy? I’ve been in and out of Portland for years—a huge fan of Voodoo Doughnut,” she says. “And I totally just forgot.”

That’s basically the best compliment ever for the family behind Baker’s Donuts, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

“We want to be the next Voodoo Doughnut for Sacramento: the go-to foodie spot,” says co-owner Douglas Hem. Douglas and his sister Stephanie grew up inside Baker’s Donuts. Their mom, Sivkun Tun, opened up shop with her now

ex-husband in 1985. They were political refugees from Cambodia; survivors of the Khmer Rouge’s brutal genocide.

The link between Cambodian refugees and the state’s doughnut shops has been long-documented; the most recent figures suggest Cambodians control approximately 90 percent of California’s doughnut market, at least according to census data from AsianWeek in 2000. Though, with that generation of shop-owners aging, questions loom about the future of the state’s frieddough landscape.

Tun was just 19 years old when she left Cambodia. She’s been hooked on doughnuts ever since—eating at least one every single day.

Sacramento is similarly hooked on doughnuts—quirky, Instagram-friendly ones in particular. Baker’s Donuts boasts more than 9,000 followers on Instagram—compare that with popular Midtown bar LowBrau’s near 3,000 or Punch Line Sacramento’s near 1,600. Croissant-doughnut hybrids, modeled

after Dominique Ansel’s famed Cronut in New York, can now easily be found in scores of mom-and-pop shops around town.

So even though Dunkin’ Donuts, which already controls more than half of the national doughnut market, plans to open 46 locations in the Sacramento region in the near future, local business owners aren’t worried. Baker’s Donuts, for example, already had to deal with Krispy Kreme, which announced plans to open right across the street in 2013. Business was already dangerously slow.

“We were barely making it,” Douglas says. “My mom was always late on rent. A couple months we couldn’t make payments on our house or our car. It was scary knowing Krispy Kreme was maybe going to take even more away from that.”

Douglas was living at home, having recently graduated from UC Davis.

Stephanie moved back to Sacramento to help the family after a stint in Los Angeles. The brother-sister team prepared to innovate,

eying the first obvious national trend they could import: a croissant-doughnut hybrid.

Their first version debuted in November, and at the time, few other doughnut shops sold the coveted, flaky pastry. Estelle’s Patisserie only just began offering its once-a-week, decadent concoction. Sweet Dozen had begun in July, to major media attention.

The Khamphay family’s Sweet Dozen opened in 2008, just north of Carmichael on Madison Avenue. In 2013, operations started shifting over from the parents to the kids, Jeremy and Nuny. Out came a new line of ever-changing specialty doughnuts: pistachiohoney, butter toffee, green tea, almond butter-chocolate.

“We try to keep it simple, not too crazy,” she says. “You lose the flavor of the actual doughnut with too many toppings.”

In short, they’re refined, elegant.

The stories of Baker’s Donuts and Sweet Dozen are strikingly similar. Parents, political refugees from Cambodia and Laos, respectively, settle in California in the ’80s. They worked in bakeries and doughnut shops, until they eventually opened their own. They had kids—one girl and one boy—who were essentially raised to want a life away from the deep-fryer. They went to college, got other full-time jobs.

But then the kids all came back to help, to innovate.

Actually, the stories are classic.

“It was the American Dream,” Nuny says. “You come here with nothing and you try to start something out of nothing.”

Douglas and Stephanie remember helping out at Baker’s Donuts even as middle school students. For years, Tun woke up at 4 a.m.

She’d take the kids to her sister’s house before starting work at 5 a.m. At 3 p.m., when the kids needed to be picked up from school, she’d close up shop briefly to make the trip. Douglas and Stephanie would complete their homework at Baker’s Donuts, in between sweeping and helping customers while Tun earned her first rest of the day. Back then, the shop didn’t close until 9 p.m. Seven days a week.

“Mom would always say it’s better than the life she had in Cambodia, and that now she can provide a better life for her kids,” Douglas says. “She built our mindset for how to be hard workers for school and in life.”

Now, the kids are always hustling. Douglas and Stephanie run Baker’s Donuts—not to mention its prolific social media accounts— while taking classes on the side. Jeremy essentially runs Sweet Dozen, while Nuny juggles the doughnut shop’s communications with a full-time job and parenthood.

Last July, both sets determined they needed a new product to jazz up business. And remarkably, they both unveiled ice cream doughnut sandwiches within days of each other—and within days of the launch of a new business that specialized solely in ice cream doughnut sandwiches, The Parlour Ice Cream Puffs shop, located in the Arden-Arcade area.

At Baker’s Donuts the doughnut is sliced open and then some Gunther’s ice cream is popped inside, but Sweet Dozen and The Parlour both use machines that reseal the doughnut, warming it while the enveloped ice cream (also from Gunther’s) stays nice and cold.

“Lines were out the door,” Douglas says.

“Usually summer is slow on donuts, but our sales tripled.”

Stephanie remembers two sisters from Santa Rosa who drove all the way to Sacramento as soon as they read about the ice cream doughnuts online. Douglas remembers a woman who only stopped in because her daughter in Jamaica told her about Baker’s Donuts.

Visits from foodies in the Bay Area and Southern California are common occurrences.

But now that it’s winter and ice cream doughnuts are no longer lifting business to crazy heights, what comes next?

Sweet Dozen is toying with a croissantdoughnut-grilled cheese idea that would meld sweet and savory, flaky and melty.

Baker’s Donuts, meanwhile, recently debuted emoji designs on its creations—the hearts-for-eyes face was first.

Expansion plans are also on the mind.

Sweet Dozen is debating between another brick-and-mortar spot closer to downtown— Oak Park is a possibility—or a roving food truck. Baker’s Donuts is fielding pleas from the Bay Area—none enticing enough thus far. But they also both have the same fears about what could happen if they were no longer solely a family business.

Never mind the fact that the parents are getting older, and some of the kids want to put their college degrees to use. Is this why Dunkin’ Donuts is moving into California right now? Will that 90-percent figure start dwindling as Cambodian families eventually close up shop?

“I don’t know when we’ll see these doughnut shops die out. You don’t see a lot of [the] second generation taking over—a lot of them go and pursue other careers,” Douglas says.

“We’re still pursuing our careers too, but in the meantime, we’re helping.” Ω

Luckily, Sacramentans can figure out how to do the same kind of thing (provided a lot of imagination and kitchen experimentation) for a lot cheaper with an event called Tasting the Wild. The Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op program features author Alicia Funk leading a tour through Soil Born Farms’ American River Ranch (2140 Chase Drive in Rancho Cordova) and a sampling of “wild treats.” It’s also on Saturday, January 24, at 10 a.m.

Well, not entirely. Chef Sylvanna Mislang will continue her elaborate, elegant and all-vegan pop-up dinners on a semi-regular basis. But for those looking to taste Mislang’s creations at a more affordable cost, a set location and on an easier-toremember schedule, look to the Roaming Spoon’s recent collaboration with Shine (1400 E Street).

Mislang has been popping up at Shine with more and more frequency since fall, and the deal is official: the Roaming Spoon will host a happy hour every second Monday of the month from 6 to BEFORE | NEWS

Expect these menus to change each month—more the reason to keep returning—but here’s a taste of what January editions offered: street tacos filled with winter veggies and lime crema ($7); coconut hummus with garbanzo flat bread ($7) and fried potatoes with mushroom gravy ($10). But vegan.

Mislang was inspired by Kevin O’Connor, former wunderkind at Blackbird pre-Beer Gallery, to start the Roaming Spoon after experiencing one of his Tree House pop-up dinners. Food media has been buzzing for months about his first | F E AT U R E STORY

brick-and-mortar, which still remains a mystery. But this month, he started a new concept: Kanpai, izakaya-style eats with “gratuitous sake.” And for the past few months, he’s been serving up free bites at Requiem Events’ Throwdown parties at Midtown Barfly (1119 21st Street).

Again, it’s probably the easiest, most reliable and cheapest way to taste O’Connor’s food—cover is at most $15—but it’ll come with a side of pulsating electronic dance music.

Burrito watch: Chando’s Tacos added a couple new items to its menu last week. Folks going lowcarb can now order their tacos as lettuce wraps—butter lettuce wraps, specifically. Perhaps more exciting to Chando’s fans is the new option to add beans to their burritos— though those will continue to remain rice-less for now. Still, definitely more exciting.

Watch for crowds: The Unified Wine & Grape Symposium, which takes place Tuesday, January 27, through Thursday, January 29, is the largest industry event of its kind in the country. The local beer scene’s growing, which means more brewers playing with wild ales. Enter Mraz Brewing Company in El Dorado Hills: It announced an expansion into a 3,000-square-foot facility last week, where brewmaster Mike Mraz intends to house hundreds of barrels to grow his wild-beer program. This bodes well for brews such as The Cardinal ($16.99 for 500 milliliters), a Flanders red-style beer aged on oak.

After a while, he blended young and old vintages, cherries were added, and the end result is a light bodied, gently carbonated, delicately sour ale. The brew’s not tart or nuanced, but it’s a quality local sour brew.

Or, peel and slice kiwis for fruit salads and smoothies. They’re another great source of vitamin C, in case you’re tired of citrus. Buns in the oven Here are a couple of newsy items for baked good lovers. First is a new-ish Natomas location of Starbread Bakery that somehow eluded Food Stuff for an entire year. At least we’ve found it now (at 2101 Natomas Crossing Drive, Suite 150), and it’s closer to SN&R’s office than the one on Mack Road in South Sacramento that I wrote about way back in 2012.

For those who don’t remember reading that (see “Miss Bread,” SN&R Foodstuff, April 5, 2012) here’s a refresher: The bakery’s specialty item is señorita bread, a sweet, buttery, fluffy baked Filipino pastry that’s absolutely addicting. The second piece of bakery news is that SusieCakes (www.susiecakes.com), a bakery chain from Southern California, is having a grand opening celebration at 564 Pavilions Lane in Sacramento on Saturday, January 24, at 1 p.m. I don’t know anything about the quality of SusieCakes, but it’s a pretty bold move to open right across the street from the popular Ettore’s European Bakery and Restaurant.

Risky play Savage Park Amy Fusselman gives serious side-eye to America the Nanny State in Savage Park: A Meditation on Play, Space, and Risk for Americans Who Are Nervous, Distracted, and Afraid to Die (Houghton Mifflin Harcoart; Book $21). Fusselman posits that our need to dissociate from death has quashed primal urges to build and explore. This, she says, can be observed plainly in our parks: strictly regulated safety structures designed for parental peace of mind rather than children’s development. Using Tokyo’s dangerfilled Hanegi children’s playpark as an opportunity for examining her own fears, Fusselman makes a strong case for play, and its darker cousin, risk.

Whatever natural setting he travels to—a colorful forest, a gloomy beach, twisted rock formations—Ochner captures with a sense of great emotion and symbolism. The Shining For those not invested in the stakeholders, all the 2014-era Crest Theatre drama may come as surprise, but the gist is such: Significant disagreements over leases and operations led to new management and, subsequently, significant kvetching on Facebook and other social media platforms.

Film Those who prefer their drama to stay on the screen instead of behind the scenes, however, take note: The Crest Theatre is still showing movies—albeit none of the art house flicks it used to be known for (at least not currently).

Upcoming options include the Friday, January 23, screening of the creepy-as-all-get-out Stanley Kubrick classic The Shining. The film, which stars Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, is an adaptation of the Steven King novel by the same name and originally hit movie theaters in 1980. Getting the chance to see it in a theater is pretty awesome. Surround sound scariness = more future nightmares for your buck.

Then, Thursday, January 29, the theater will show Alfred Hitchcock’s psycho-terror of a flick Vertigo, starring James Stewart and Kim Novak.

The February calendar, for those planning ahead, so far includes another Hitchcock film, The Birds and, also, something a bit more newfangled, Amélie, the quirky 2001 French love story that launched a thousand copycat bang trims.

It’s not as easy as it would seem crafting a play out of nothing but letters exchanged between two people. Even A. R. Gurney, the playwright, calls it “a sort of a play” and “an event.”

An event it is when performed by two of Sacramento’s finer actors—Stephen Vargo and Martha Omiyo Kight—at the William J. Geery Theater. A play in which two characters reveal themselves only through the words they put on paper over the course of five decades requires actors who can portray joy, despair and emotional turmoil only through their voices (and, damn, these two are great at that!).

The actors sit on stage, a table between them, and read their letters. Their only interaction is the exchange of sometimes rapidfire responses read from correspondences.

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III (Vargo) and Melissa Gardner (Kight) are quintessential East Coast WASPS. He is well-to-do and very proper; she is better-to-do and freespirited. Through their letters, two lives are illuminated: He grows up, goes to Yale, gets married, becomes a United States senator; she paints, gets married, divorces, cracks up and tries to pull her life together—with the help of her “Andy.”

Their decades-long exchange of correspondence began in second grade, when he wrote to her that she looked “like a lost princess.” He didn’t know how right he was or how much he would care.

Stopping the stigma One of the biggest problems facing people with mental illnesses is social stigma. And because of unfair, negative and often completely incorrect ideas prevalent in our culture, a lot of people needlessly (and quietly) suffer with mental illnesses—across cultures, gender, sexual orientation and economic status. According to the Sacramento County Division of Behavioral Health Services, roughly 355,000 Sacramento County residents live with mental illness, but only about a third of them are actively getting help. It is for this very reason that the Sacramento Behavioral Health Services initiated the “Mental Illness: It’s not always what you think” project.

The latest event they have planned for this series is called Telling Our Story: End the Stigma of Mental Illness.

The several-hour event includes people of different cultures telling their personal stories of living with mental illness through plays, skits, poetry and other forms of expression. The first act, set in an unnamed area of British East Africa during the late 19th century, offers up the ostensibly ideal British colonial family: Father Clive (Jerry Kennedy, in a mutton-chop sideburned perfect turn), a governor and empire-worshipper; his unhappy wife Betty (Benjamin T. Ismail, in the first of several gender-bending twists); his even-more unhappy son Edward (Elizabeth Holzman); an unhappy governess (Gina Harrower); a proto-feminist neighbor (Ruby Sketchley); a repressed gay colonial adventurer (Clay Kirkwood); a “close your eyes and think of England” mother-in-law (Linda Moltalvo); and, unhappiest of all, a native servant (Eason Donner).

Just when you think it can’t get any weirder, it does. Churchill’s genius is in seeing the act of oppressing other people as the result of repressed humanity, and it’s usually sex that bursts out of the seams before being shoved right back into its straitjacket in the most painful way possible.

In one particular scene between the British boy and the subjugated African, we see the power of power to destroy us as we use it.

Hacking it Blackhat Never let it be said that director Michael Mann doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how to catch your eye and hold it. His new movie Blackhat begins with a view of Earth from by Jim Lane nighttime orbit. Mannâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s camera dives from the night sky toward a planet spangled with golden lights. We zoom to and through the towers of Hong Kong to a nuclear power plant, then into the control roomâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;to dive again, into the works of the plantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s computer. We swoop among the components as we did the streets outsideâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;one of the movieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recurring visual metaphors is how much the circuits of a computer and the streets of a teeming city look alike. Finally we come to rest near a glowing red dot that our eye tells us doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t belong there.

Indeed it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit of malicious coding that has hacked its way through the plantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s firewalls. Within seconds itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s done its mischief, leading to a cooling system failure, overheated fuel rods, an explosion and a frantic struggle to contain a meltdown Almost simultaneously, a similar hack on Wall Street results in a sudden run-up in commodities futures, with some person or persons unknown making a sudden killing (of the financial variety). Meanwhile, back in China, cyber-security officer Capt. Chen Dawai (Leehom Wang) is assigned to liaise with the FBI in the person of Agent Carol Barrett (Viola Davis) in an effort to track down the mysterious â&#x20AC;&#x153;blackhatâ&#x20AC;? hacker and figure out what his or her real game is.

Chen recognizes a fragment of the blackhatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s code from his student days at MIT: itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit of prank coding developed by his then-roommate Nick Hathaway (Chris Hemsworth). Hathaway canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be the blackhat, since heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safely ensconced in federal prison, midway through a 15-year sentence for Robin Hood-style hacking into some predatory banksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; databases. Chen insists that Hathaway is essential to solving the case, and Hathaway boldly sets his price: If he fails, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s back to the slammer, but if he succeeds, the feds will commute his sentence.

The introduction of this mossy trope is like a skyrocket warning of danger ahead. Sure enough,

this clichĂŠ turns out to be only the first of many; worse yet, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an early indicator that eventually, Blackhat is more or less going to stop making any sense at all.

The movie does this sooner rather than later.

The ripped-from-todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s-headlines theme of anonymous cyberwarfare is not matched by the developments in Blackhatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s script. Mann has often directed his own screenplays, but this time he entrusted the writing to one Morgan Davis Foehl, whose previous work consists of assistant-editor gigs on a handful of TV series and two Adam Sandler movies. Something persuaded Mann that Foehl was ready for his close-up, but he guessed wrong. Foehl may have, as studio publicity suggests, based his script on Mannâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s years of research into the subject, but Blackhat plays more like a study in the proven elements of blockbuster action franchises like the Mission: Impossible movies or the adventures of Jason Bourne and James Bond. (Is it in fact the opener in a proposed new franchise, Nick Hathaway, Cyber-Detective?) We get the usual itinerary of instantaneous, hassle-free travelâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Beijing to Washington to L.A. to Jakarta to Kuala Lumpurâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s even what can only be called a Bond girl: Chenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s super-hot sister Lien (Wei Tang), a computer genius who serves mainly as a sidekick-cum-hookup for Hathaway.

The ripped-from-todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sheadlines theme of anonymous cyberwarfare is not matched by the developments in Blackhatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s script.

And naturally, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the obligatory series of shootouts with assorted villainous henchman.

Mann understands that high-body-count gunplay is a helluva lot sexier that watching people hunched over keyboards staring into incomprehensible lines of code. And in the end (spoiler alert!) the mystery turns out to be little more than Auric Goldfingerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1963 plot to rob Fort Knox; when the supervillain finally turns up, we half expect him to say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;No, Mr. Hathaway, I expect you to die!â&#x20AC;?

Fortunately, Mann invests this folderol with his riveting, urgent style. The movie is like a ride through town with a Grand Prix racerâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; we know the streets, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exciting seeing them like this. And, perhaps not incidentally, Hemsworth deftly nominates himself to be the next James Bond, when Daniel Craig finally gets tired of the role. Ί

Director Tim Burton and writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski tell the story of artist Margaret Keane (Amy Adams) and her husband Walter (Christoph Waltz), who made a fortune in the 1950s and ’60s marketing her paintings of wispy, huge-eyed waifs while claiming to have painted them himself. The look is brighter than the usual Burton film—all breezy California sunshine and vivid retro fashions— but the underpinnings are as dark as ever, fraught with subtle psychological abuse and manipulation, encapsulated in Waltz’s unctuous smile that never quite spreads as far as his shifty, empty eyes. His Walter is the epitome of the oily small-time con man who hits it big, while Adams’ Margaret is a sweet spirit at first confused by Walter’s dishonesty, finally finding the strength to assert herself. With their many absentee fathers, robber-baron capitalists and would-be messiahs, the films of Paul Thomas Anderson portray the California Dream as an oft-repeated fall from grace of Biblical proportions. All pinned to the wall and linked together with an intricate series of colored strings, the Anderson oeuvre begins to form an alternate-history book of California as spoiled paradise, stretching from the oil field power struggles in There Will Be Blood to the millennium apocalypse anxieties of Magnolia, and now the “square is hip” conspiracy at the heart of his ramshackle masterpiece Inherent Vice. Joaquin Phoenix stars as the stoned-out-of-his-gourd private detective Larry “Doc” Sportello, who with his gentle nature and bong-rattled comprehension skills, makes for a perfect noir patsy. No matter how lost we are in the narrative, Doc is always a little more lost, never more so than when the frazzled ends of the mystery occasionally fit together. D.B.

During World War II, the eccentric, socially challenged math genius Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) leads a British cryptography unit charged with cracking Nazi Germany’s Enigma code, a hitherto unbreakable cipher that has defied all efforts to unravel it. Graham Moore’s script takes a few liberties with history, and his multiple-flashback structure is a bit awkward at times, but director Morten Tyldum smooths it all out into an expression of Turing’s psychological complexity. Cumberbatch’s masterful performance towers over the picture, but he has plenty of sturdy support—Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode and Allen Leech as co-workers, Charles Dance and Mark Strong as higher-ups, and (most especially) Alex Lawther as the teenage Turing, in a performance that complements and enriches Cumberbatch’s own. Foxcatcher

Steve Carell stars in Bennett Miller’s compelling Foxcatcher as the real-life billionaire John DuPont, heir to a legendary American fortune and a paranoid schizophrenic who murdered wrestling champion/ coach Dave Schultz in 1996. At first glance, Carell looks like a “stunt” choice for the part of DuPont, but it is inspired casting by Miller (Capote, Moneyball). With his awkward compulsion to be both father and brother, benefactor and lover, boss and buddy, DuPont has a lot in common with Carell’s heretofore most iconic role—Dunder Mifflin regional manager Michael Scott on TV’s The Office. While this is the darkest and bleakest role that Carell has ever played, he uses his comedy-honed physical and vocal chops (and generous amounts of makeup) to disappear into the role of the pale and paunchy DuPont. Miller and cinematographer Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty) abet Carell by giving Foxcatcher the teeming, sweat lodge claustrophobia of a wrestling room. D.B.

American Sniper

The last public image that most people have of octogenarian actor/ filmmaker Clint Eastwood is him at the 2012 GOP convention, losing an argument with an empty chair. There was good reason to fear the worst with his adaptation of the Chris Kyle biography American Sniper, so what a surprise that rather than an uncritical testament to the might of the armed forces (Heartbreak Ridge 2, say), Eastwood delivers this complex, conflicted and profoundly moving look at the military machine, and the toll it takes on the soldiers who keep getting shoveled back into the fire. American Sniper possesses the sweep and scope of Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter, but very little of that movie’s romantic grandeur. Eastwood is after something smaller and more personal—while Cimino turned the Vietnam War experience into myth, here Eastwood undermines the legend of a contemporary American warrior even as he is creating it. Selma

There is such a powerful convergence of hot-button topics in Ava DuVernay’s Selma, from civil rights to voting laws to police brutality to street protests to government surveillance, that even some of the film’s strongest proponents are positioning the film as a good-for-you, syllabus-ready obligation.

That’s an affront to the intelligence, cinematic flexibility and emotional satisfaction of this rousing film, which tracks the involvement of Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) in the 1965 voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Oyelowo is fantastic as MLK, a perfect mix of humanity and moral authority, and Carmen Ejogo is fine in the underdeveloped role of Coretta Scott King. Enough famous faces ham it up in bit parts that the film threatens to turn into Ava DuVernay’s Lee Daniels’ The Butler (a snarling Tim Roth as George Wallace is particularly distracting), but Oyelowo keeps it grounded and DuVernay keeps it moving. Spare Parts

A team of students at a predominantly Hispanic high school, led by a substitute science teacher (George Lopez), decide to enter a national underwater robotics contest, taking on some of the best high schools and colleges in the country. Based on the true story of Phoenix’s Carl Hayden Community High School (with Lopez’s character a blend of two real teachers), the movie manages to include a bit more than its share of clichés, stock characters and awkward scenes. Still, the movie benefits from an air of earnest goodwill and well-turned performances: Carlos PenaVega, David Del Rio, José Julián and J.R. Villarreal as the students, with solid support from seasoned pros Lopez, Jamie Lee Curtis (as the school’s no-nonsense principal), Marisa Tomei (a sympathetic teacher) and Esai Morales (an embittered parent). Released in 2008 just as Bush II’s term was winding down, the Pierre Moreldirected Taken set Liam Neeson’s angry father and his “special set” of torture tactics loose on the leering Eurotrash sleazeballs who kidnapped his daughter. It was idiotic but irresistible, a timely vision of the Ugly American unleashed abroad, and it started a new leading-man phase in Neeson’s career. The

competent Morel was replaced on 2012’s Taken 2 by fellow Frenchman and Luc Besson disciple Olivier Megaton, who couldn’t direct his way out of a paper bag without changing screen direction 17 times. Megaton returns for Taken 3, and while the film is slightly more watchable than Taken 2, the franchise hook of Neeson’s righteous American flouting international law in order to “protect his family” is ditched in favor of a more familiar whodunit—the only thing “taken” here is the plot to almost every episode of Murder, She Wrote. The Wedding Ringer

A friendless groom-to-be (Josh Gad) desperately turns to a professional best man (Kevin Hart), who runs a lucrative business catering to such losers. The script by Jay Lavender and director Jeremy Garelick has a clever title and an amusing premise, and the movie benefits from the teaming of Hart and Gad (they’re like a millennial version of Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder). But the picture suffers from Garelick’s inept direction; he shows no sense of pacing and is so desperate for laughs that he throws crude sight gags at us like blasts from a pump-action shotgun, obscuring long stretches of dialogue. Gad and Hart manage several effective moments (maybe Garelick left the camera running while he went out for coffee); here’s hoping they work together again, preferably for someone who knows what he’s doing. Director Jean-Marc Vallee follows up last year’s Oscar fave Dallas Buyers Club with another blatant awards grubber in Wild, based on the memoir by Cheryl Strayed. Reese Witherspoon plays Strayed, who in 1995 hiked over 1,000 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail, exorcising the demons that occupied the space left by her mother’s untimely death. Much like Dallas Buyers Club, Wild is a mix of unguarded rawness and mawkish calculation, equal parts honest inspiration and mercenary ambition.

Witherspoon is very good, not just deglamorized but immersed, and Laura Dern is every bit her equal as Strayed’s mother (another “dream Mom” role for Dern to match her turn earlier this year in The Fault in Our Stars). The editing, cinematography, sound design, nonlinear Nick Hornby script and PCT scenery are all exquisite, so perhaps the entire project is just a little too Hike, Pray, Love for this critic’s taste. Married with songs Several decades in, Tim and Helen Spangler keep the marital—and musical—sparks alive It’s hard to separate Tim and Helen Spangler’s marriage from their music—the duo’s been playing together since the late ’80s when they were by Aaron Carnes only dating. Now after marriage, kids, careers, the couple still plays together, a lush, heartfelt, harmony-driven folk-rock in the vein of the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. “We’ve never been one of those couples where the husband goes off and plays golf all Sunday and the wife has Bunko and book group,” Tim says. “We like spending time together. It doesn’t get old that way.”

forming a cover band, but also launched a side band to play folk-influenced originals, and then another band to play original rock.

Not surprisingly, three bands proved to be a bit too much.

“I think we were so excited about playing and getting gigs that we couldn’t say no to anything,” Tim says. “We had all these different projects going. We said, ‘This isn’t sustainable—we need to focus.’”

They scaled back to work more simply as a duo on an album under the moniker Spangler.

They wrote and recorded everything, just the two of them, overdubbing instruments and vocals as they wanted. The resulting album is a gorgeous, harmony-rich collection of folk-rock songs.

The record never received a proper release show, however, because the Spanglers realized they needed a band to play these songs.

Eventually, they recruited additional players: Chris Reilly, who had played with them in a previous band, joined the couple on drums for Spangler’s debut show in early 2012. Later, they were joined by guitarist Adam Estell and guitarist Scott Katzman.

The newly expanded lineup made for a different sound, Helen says.

“It sounds different if it’s just Tim and I—usually an acoustic guitar and two voices, very simple sounding,” Helen says. “Then you add these guys in and Adam writes all these riffs and very lyrical guitar parts that totally change the songs. Everybody’s writing.

It’s the same core song, but it’s better.”

No need for couples therapy here.

Helen agrees, pointing out that how it’s a particularly important part of the fabric of their relationship.

“It can be really positive. If you’re exhausted, or don’t feel like dealing with the other person, you can still work on songs together. Both of us can escape and only focus on this thing, but together,” she says.

When they met, Tim was playing in a cover band, and, after hearing his future wife’s voice, quickly asked her to join. Through college, and after, they played together in various cover bands. They wrote original music, but rarely played those songs in front of people.

That was partly due to circumstance. “The places we played had a ‘one or two original per set’ maximum. They weren’t particularly interested in original stuff,” Tim says.

And so there was a gap of about 10 years when, other than the occasional acoustic two-piece performance, Tim and Helen didn’t play out at all. Then in 2009, their 12-yearold son expressed interest in playing drums.

Getting a kit and setting up the practice space reinvigorated the couple to start playing with other people again. The Spanglers started out by

“The core idea for the song is we look for ideas where harmonies can fit in. We try to remind ourselves that,” he says. “I don’t think we’re the kind of band that can get away with people not being able to understand what we’re saying or hear the lyrics—that’s not going to be ideal.” Ω

Simple themes, some hippie stuff—staring at the magnificence of Big Sur, for example—and sweetness.

“It took me a long time to learn how to write again,” she noted about the three-year gap between Build a Boat to the Sun and Orangefarben, “where you just enjoy yourself.”

Wordy music: Once every two years, UC Davis puts on a big, themed music festival, spanning several days and multiple venues. The 2015 edition, the Music and Words Festival, will explore the relationship between utterances, tones and meaning.

It starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, with a two-hour event that’s one part of sound artist David Coll’s latest project, Construction. The event itself inside the Nelson Gallery will feature some sort of live performance, which will later be morphed into an interactive art installation, to be enjoyed all week at the Mondavi Center. The big question: does physical presence matter anymore?

Not every event during Music and Words promises to be so intellectually heady. Though there will be an intense performance by Bob Ostertag, professor in technocultural studies, at 10 p.m., January 30. His electronic soundscape was built from a recording of a young boy burying his father during the Salvadoran Civil War. It’s free but ticketed, taking place in the smaller Vanderhoef Studio Theatre.

But the highlight is SŌ Percussion, performing three different sets on three different days. The New York percussion quartet bangs on just about anything—glockenspiel, pipes, bells, bowed marimba, coffee mug, amplified cactus—and performs pieces by the

likes of John Cage as well as originals.

Oh, yes: I have a new, small obsession. It’s Olivia Rose’s strange voice, of the band Oh, Rose.

The Olympia, Wash.-based trio played a downtown Davis living room last Saturday along with Jules Baenziger of Sea of Bees.

Michael Leahy of Crossbill Records hooked it up, and some former KDVS managers-now-roommates worked the sound system.

Impressive all around.

Oh, Rose plays a low-fi, psychedelic, indie sort of rock. But then Rose contorts her voice into notably un-pretty, marvelous, folky screeching, and it all sounds sort of punk-lite. Awesome.

Then Baenziger sat on an amp with her acoustic guitar and lulled a crowded house of cross-legged fans into pure bliss. “The most intimate set I’ve ever experienced” was a

Humbling: Indie rock band Humble Wolf is undeniably popular in local circles.

Shady Lady Saloon was packed last Friday night for the band’s release party of Black and White.

The four-piece sound checked with a Maroon 5 song. I was slightly confused, but then Humble Wolf started its first set with the Lumineers’ “Hey Ho.” Cheesy covers continued.

Many Black Keys songs were attempted. The opening guitar line to “Gold on the Ceiling” sounded painfully off.

Maybe it was the sound system.

Maybe it was the whiskey in my hand.

I don’t know. I wanted to leave.

But everyone else in the bar was having a great time. I started to second-guess myself. Surely, Humble Wolf would come out for its second set with all originals, and the band would sound better, and everything would be just fine.

Second set, second whiskey. More covers. Rebecca Peters, local singersongwriter with a lovely bluesy, soulful tone, jumped on stage. Too bad no one could hear her.

Truly, too bad all around. I actually thoroughly enjoy “Black and White,” the title track of Humble Wolf’s new record. It’s a simple, catchy, mainstream-friendly rock song—definitely can hear the Black Keys influence— and I looked forward to hearing it live.

Alas, I knew I couldn’t last another hour and a half. And maybe I should have given my spot up earlier—the band stated on Facebook the next day that fans were waiting upwards of 45 minutes to get inside.

Badlands, 9 p.m., $18-$28 Before he was Adore Delano, Danny Noriega earned a reputation by being a semifinalist on American Idol in 2008 and sassily arguing with Simon Cowell. With a unique voice and huge personality, Noriega embraced DANCE Delano and headed for RuPaul’s Drag Race, placing as runnerup in 2014. Boyish charm replaced by a larger-than-life love of fun, Delano’s dynamic vocals are perfect for the hip-hop influenced “I Adore U,” the more serious “My Address is Hollywood” and the more lighthearted “Party,” which borrows from Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire”—all songs from 2014’s Till Death Do Us Party. Dean Haakenson’s lyrical mad genius rears its head once again in Be Brave Bold Robot’s fifth album, Press E to Continue.

The Kickstarter-funded effort is eclectic, INDIE/FOLK to say the least. Think acoustic folk, full-band jams, covers, electronic-infused tracks and hip-hop. Yes, Haakenson raps. “Grown Ass Man,” a collaboration with Mr. Hooper, totally ain’t bad. There’s also a sweet and simple, folky ode to Sacramento, with shoutouts to trees, rivers, artists and politicians alike. Anyway, BBBR is ready to celebrate, so things might get weird. G. Love and Special Sauce has made a living for the last two decades blending blues, hip-hop, reggae, funk, pop and a laid-back surfer vibe. Not surprisingly, Garret “G. Love” Dutton’s recently released a handful of albums on Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records label. In 2011, G. Love switched things up a bit by putting out a more country blues-themed album called Fixin’ to Die, produced by the Avett Brothers. He followed that up in 2014 with Sugar, which returns to the old-school G. Love sound: laid back acoustic blues with BLUES/POP hip-hop-influenced vocal delivery and wordplay.

Singer-songwriter Matt Costa, a fellow Brushfire Records artist, opens this show.

Choosing to call your band “Murderlicious” demonstrates a lot of confidence in how brutal you believe your group to be. In the case of Murderlicious, extremely brutal is exactly right. It’s not just the moody, dark, death-metal meets thrash-metal riffs; it’s everything about the foursome. Just look at METAL some Facebook status updates: “Happy New Year, we are looking forward to killing you some more this year” and “I missed killing people and eating their bodies.” The group members also have been around a while in our scene, and are quite talented. Local singer-songwriter Brian Chris Rogers may have only recently started releasing music, but he isn’t new to the scene. For a while he fronted Izabella and the Nibblers, and he’s played a variety of instruments for REGGAE/ROCK other artists such as Rasar (bass) and the Toyes (drums). These days, he’s taking his many skills and focusing them on his own music. He calls his style “Alien Soul” but really what he’s doing is tinkering with any and all styles including reggae, rock, funk, hip-hop and jazz. Ultimately, Roger’s greatest strength is his vulnerability, which comes through in his music, regardless of what genre he happens to express it in.

Mondavi Center, 8 p.m., $26-$81 The ukulele is usually associated with Hawaii and its legendary performers such as Don Ho. More recently, rockers from George Harrison to Eddie Vedder have also picked up the uke.

Now comes the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and its interpretations of pop and rock classics like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The WORLD Chain,” “Mama Mia,” “Michelle” and “Good Vibrations.” The key here is a nice mix of vocals and those little ukes—plus a lone guitar—which generate a bigger sound than one might expect. Reinvention begins by rediscovering who you are and who you would become if you invest support, encouragement, courage, effort and fortitude in yourself. Reinvention is the process of becoming the person you know you are. Obstacles like naysayers, or unexpected financial pressures, can get in the way.

At times, you will feel like you have failed on the path to finding yourself. But it’s how you get back up and continue forward that determines your success.

Let’s break it down. Think back to when you were a child, 6 or 9 years old. What is the clearest memory you have of the personal qualities you wanted to embody when you were older? What did you see yourself doing? What was your response when adults asked what you wanted to do when you grew up? Oh, I know that they actually asked what you wanted to be. But if their question sparked a vision of engagement in work, reconnect with that image.

Notice how you felt while imagining yourself at work. Those feelings are the gold of “being.” When you think of yourself now, moving to another city or dating, make choices according to the presence of those feelings.

The energy of those emotions can connect you to the original joy within, the joy we sometimes tasted in childhood.

You also need to challenge the thoughts that keep you feeling stuck.

Reboot your brain by questioning self-critical thoughts or thoughts in which you bully yourself into complacency. Question the thoughts that say you will never become a new self. Motivate yourself instead through love.

To his credit, Mr. Ngaio then goes on to state, “I am not sure I have a solution for you.” But, in his next sentence he makes an analogue between pot smoking and the acceptance of other annoyances of big-city living, such as occasional aroma of tobacco smoke, random garbage cans and dog shit.

Those people who live in gated communities would never acquiesce to these obnoxious and preventable smells and refuse. Why should people who may not be able to afford, or for that matter want to live in these gated communities have to accept anything less than neighborhoods that are clean and sanitary? This is a minor, but important distinction of inequity in our society.

My response to your question: What does the smell of marijuana smoke have to do with “clean and sanitary” neighborhoods? Does the smell of pot automatically make something “dirty”? Really? Maybe you missed my point: Marijuana smoke may be annoying, but it won’t kill you. In order for people to get along in urban (and suburban) environments, we need to be tolerant of small disturbances sometimes. My neighbors don’t complain about the smell of weed, and I don’t complain when I hear them getting it on. See how that works? Why get in the way of someone else’s good time? If you have to work in close quarters with someone that reeks of weed (or anything else, really) and it bothers you, maybe you could say something, Other than that, it shouldn’t concern you. Ω

The proto-capitalists of the Dutch East India Company gained dominion over Run, and enslaved the local population to work on plantations. They fully controlled the global sale of nutmeg, which allowed them to charge exorbitant prices. But ultimately their monopoly collapsed. Here’s one reason why: Pigeons ate nutmeg seeds on Run, then flew to other islands and pooped them out, enabling plants to grow outside of Dutch jurisdiction. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Have you

triggered any brilliant breakthroughs lately? Have you made any cathartic departures from the way things have always been done? Have you thought so far outside the box that you can’t even see the box any more? Probably not. The last few weeks have been a time of retrenchment and stabilization for you. But I bet you will start going creatively crazy very soon— and I mean that in the best sense. To ensure maximum health and well-being, you simply must authorize your imagination to leap and whirl and dazzle.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): The

cassava plant produces a starchy root that’s used as food by a half-billion people all over the planet. No one can simply cook it up and eat it, though. In its raw state, it contains the poisonous chemical cyanide, which must be removed by careful preparation. An essential first step is to soak it in water for at least 18 hours. I see this process as a metaphor for the work you have ahead of you, Scorpio. A new source of psychological and spiritual sustenance will soon be available, but you will have to purge its toxins before you can use and enjoy it.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Italian composer Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) didn’t like to work hard, and yet he was also prolific. In fact, his desire to avoid strenuous exertion was an important factor in his abundant output.

He got things done fast. His most famous opera, The Barber of Seville, took him just 13 days to finish. Another trick he relied on to reduce his workload was plagiarizing himself. Years of decay Hal Rotter cuts up bodies for art.

Usually with an X-Acto knife. Then he pastes them back together and decays them through a process of high-speed aging. Specifically, repeated loops through a photocopier.

The Oak Park artist has made arcane, misanthropic and blasphemous art for Skeletonwitch, EYEHATEGOD, Atriarch, Cattle Decapitation and more, along with churning out fliers for local shows.

You might also recognize him as the guitarist for Plague Widow, whipping his incredibly long hair as he grinds through songs. Rotter currently works as a graphic designer and assistant for Oakland artist Skinner (notable for creating the art for Mastodon’s latest album), and when he’s not doing that, he’s developing his own decrepit art under his company’s banner, Rotting Graphics, which started as a highschool passion almost 10 years ago.

Rotter took a break from preparing for a show to talk with SN&R about finding inspiration in corpses, oldschool metal art and photocopiers.

A lot of your work revolves around rot and decay and death.

What is it about rot that’s so inspiring?

I’m always fixated on decay and rot, even the colors, the earth tones. It’s kind of hard to explain. A lot of my shit comes off as really negative and misanthropic, kind of like the end of all, the end of life.

Do you find yourself there mentally a lot?

Yeah, a lot, actually (laughs). I go through a lot of periods where I feel like I’m stuck in my head too much or fixating on too many negative things, and that’s where I think the art is a good expression, good way to

get all that out. Same thing with music and everything, too. A lot of the art and the music I do is really similar: The content and the feel and the atmosphere.

Do you have any primary influences?

Huge [influence] from Skinner, especially from working for Skinner in the last four or five years. Definitely this one guy I’ve come to follow from Texas called Give Up, he’s a street artist. He does a lot of black and white, silk screen, photocopy/Xerox stuff.

I get a lot of inspiration and feel for what I’ve done for the last couple years from him. A lot of old school ’90s death metal stuff, punk rock, really old punk art, collage art, black-and-white stuff, photocopies. … [album art] like Terrorizer, Carcass, like all that earlier ’90s metal art.

Tell me about your primary medium and how you go about creating your art.

It’s mostly all Photoshop-based now, but it’s a huge mix. I do a lot of reprint, scan, a lot of Kinkos/Xerox stuff back and forth. It depends on the piece. Some album covers, I’ll be going back, printing, rescanning, cutting up twelve times at least before I find where it’s at.

Basically, a digital/physical collage going back and forth, whether I’m making a silk screen print or the cover of a vinyl or a shirt design.

The going back and forth, that’s about getting degradation, right?

Exactly, breaking the piece down to get the grit, that texture. Almost the decay of the image itself.

When it comes to your art and working with clients, do you let clients have a certain amount of say? |

It’s kind of half-and-half. A lot of bands come to me and give me an idea of what they’re looking for, and just kind of give me free rein, or give me a general idea. I really like it when a band has, not crazy strict direction … it’s really awesome to bounce off of a person in the band who has a really good idea for what they want and they can see that already in my art and come to me. It’s really satisfying to accomplish. … It’s another dude’s creation as well, but you’re bringing it to life.

How did you go about learning design?

I just picked it up in high school. I went to high school in Red Bluff up north, and they actually had a really good graphic arts program.

Right when I was a freshman, they opened up a huge graphic department and they actually offered silk screening and screen printing and stuff, and I just wanted to get into that right off the bat, and then learn Photoshop and my way around computers and all that.

That was the first year that they introduced it at the school, so the teacher was learning along with us from the book. So I just took off on my own and was making fliers. Pirated the software and took it home (laughs).

Are you thinking about trying to get displayed?

I’ve only done one gallery, had my art shown once before and that was in New York, last year, and that was really cool. It was really short notice and I was only able to show a giclee print of an album cover I did before.
