Hangry?

It’s long past lunch on a recent workday and I’m equal parts hungry and grumpy. The closest thing to fuel at my fingertips? Nacho cheese Doritos from the office vending machine, or a handful of baby carrots at my desk.

Consider me hangry—“hungry” plus “angry” in case this isn’t a word used commonly in your household as it is in mine.

It’s an affliction, however, that makes reading SN&R’s newly revamped and expanded Dish section all the more mouthwatering.

The section’s changes (see page 27) vary in size. For starters, we’ve ditched the weekly review capsules (don’t worry, they’ll still live online) in favor of fresher weekly print content.

After all, Sacramento is, arguably, the nation’s premier farm-to-fork region. Likewise, the area’s explosive restaurant growth proves we’re obsessive about new options, trends and tastes. We’re big on beer, cocktails and coffee, too.

As such, we’ve kept the long restaurant review—but redesigned it to give readers more (and better) quick hit information (e.g., the musttry dish).

The V Word and Food Stuff columns also remain. The former, of course, is a take on all things vegan, vegetarian and animal-friendly. The latter covers regional events and trends.

There’s plenty of new content, too, including “Off Menu,” a roundup of food and dining news. Also on tap: “Homegrown,” which focuses on the area’s cornucopia of fresh, seasonal ingredients, and “Eat Me” and “Drink Me,” weekly plate-of-the-week and drink-of-the-week columns, respectively.

In all, the section is—in my humble, very hungry opinion—the perfect side to every last bacon slab, sushi roll, veggie burger and freshly tapped brew this city has to offer.

Be hangry no more. Read, eat and enjoy.

Natomas’ future More than a decade ago, an SN&R writer interviewed Sacramento native Joan Didion about her then-new book, Where I Was From. Part of the conversation involved the development of Natomas, which Didion remembered fondly.

“It was always so beautiful,” she said, “even when it was underwater.”

That conversation came to mind with the recent news that the building moratorium in the Natomas area, enforced since 2008, could be lifted, at least partially, as early as this June. It definitely falls into the “good news, bad news” category.

On the good side, this means that upgrades and repairs to the levees that were the responsibility of the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency are completed, giving us 18 miles of stronger levees.

However, those 18 miles account for less than half of the necessary work. Crucial repairs are still months—if not years—from being finished. Another 24 miles of levee will be repaired by the Army Corps of Engineers under approval granted by the Obama administration last summer. But the funding to proceed has not yet been allocated by Congress.

The drumbeat of progress says that the city needs new housing—and it needs the revenue from development. It seems inevitable that building will resume in Natomas, but that doesn’t make it a good idea. It also won’t be cheap.

But watch the boom get Levees are good, started, first in projects that were in process when the moratorium but they cannot began, then expanding to new stop nature. projects. And, once the drought ends, the people who’ve invested their savings for a decent place to live will once again wonder if the levees will hold.

Simply repairing and improving the levees doesn’t remove the risk. As a spokesperson for Friends of the River told SN&R almost four years ago—and as the Corps of Engineers acknowledges—the simple fact is that Natomas is going to be a flood risk for the foreseeable future. It’s a geographic reality: unless we’re in a drought like this one, the rivers will flood.

Levees are good, but they cannot stop nature.

Flood-control measures like levees and dams work really well in some circumstances, but it is extreme hubris to think that waterways that once regularly turned Natomas into a gigantic wetland cannot, given the right circumstances, do it again.

The American River will, once again, scour away at the riverbanks. The Sacramento River will not suddenly drop 20 or so feet, placing it below the Natomas basin. It’s a flood basin. It’s not smart to put anything there that can’t be easily hosed off and fixed up after the water goes down. That makes it a great place for baseball diamonds and soccer fields and a lousy place for a home.

So, rather than surrender to continued development in a flood basin, we urge the city, developers and homebuyers to look elsewhere. Look at established neighborhoods, and perhaps at changes that will put older homes in reach of first-time buyers.

Continue aggressively pursuing infill development.

When planning expansions, let’s aim for sustainable, healthy community-building in places not naturally so prone to flooding. It’s one thing to deal with clogged storm drains and another entirely to face being wiped out by a levee breach. Ω

Factor in public-worker perks Re “What do Sacramento public employees really earn?” by Cosmo Garvin (SN&R Bites, January 8): Always enjoyed your spot-on reporting, Cosmo, and I consider myself a big-time progressive, pro-union man. However, I believe your analysis comparing total pay for government employees versus comparable private-sector employees is incomplete.

Public-sector workers enjoy working in a government monopoly (either a state, city or county) that is enshrined in law. This monopoly cannot be fired, nor does it have to compete with other private or public institutions for business. As such, workers typically enjoy protections against layoffs and arbitrary firing, along with anti age-discrimination policies. Short of committing a crime or gross incompetence, a government worker is for the most part guaranteed a job ’til the time he or she decides to retire. I am constantly hearing from friends and acquaintances the exact year and month letter of (many years in the future!) they will retire. In contrast, the week private-sector employees are working longer and longer hours just to earn a satisfactory performance review and reduce their chance of being laid off or fired.

I and others in the private sector have no guarantee of a job, must save tremendously for an uncertain retirement and cannot plan for any secure retirement date. We would gladly give up some hourly pay for career longevity and security that government workers enjoy. When discussing government worker pay, these factors need to be included.

Re “Ban fracking” (SN&R Editorial, January 8): When it comes to energy development, New York has nothing to teach California. We have passed tough regulations for hydraulic fracturing, including mandatory public disclosure of chemicals used, landowner notification and regular testing of water sources. Dozens of public hearings were held to carefully consider the abundant scientific research demonstrating that fracking is safe with manageable risks. President Barack Obama’s Secretary of the Interior recently told KQED that local fracking bans are “the wrong way to go.”

This is a sharp contrast to New York, where the state’s Department of Health admitted that it couldn’t find evidence that fracking is harmful. As the third largest consumer of gas and diesel on the planet, California has to use oil even as oil slowly decreases in importance in our overall energy mix.

A ban on fracking would only lead to higher global carbon emissions, as the state would import more oil by rail and ship, from countries with more lax environmental regulations, and to more unemployment in the state’s most economically-troubled region, as well as less revenue to fund vital state programs.

Anyone remember the animal control officer who was shot a couple of years ago and now A.C. officers wear bullet proof vest?

Do you want your water meter guy wearing a vest and gun or would you rather the police intervened and took care of a hostile threat? I’d rather the police did their job than have armed utility workers running around. I do think SWAT was a bit much, but I do think getting the police getting involved was the right call. You can’t make threats like that, this isn’t the old west.

The Right Stuff

Research laboratory takes a closer look at medical marijuana

“At the time, there were more than 100 dispensaries sending their samples to Oakland to test, and the samples would take up to three weeks to come back,” Hatley says. “It was that backed up. I was currently out of work and looking at my options, and I came up with this idea to start a testing laboratory here in Sacramento.”

“She bought nine bottles that were labeled as 16-1 strength for CBD to THC,” Hatley says. “But after we tested it, they turned out to be only 3-1 strength. She was able to return the bottles and get the right dosage to help control her child’s seizures.”

he first time Jeff Hatley walked into a dispensary four years ago, he was taken aback by the way the cannabis was labeled. As far as he could tell, the numbers assigned to signify dosage differed at each dispensary. Many containers also had a “pending” label because they were still waiting to be tested — despite being available for purchase for weeks before those results would come back.

What Hatley saw was a need for consistency in what patients were getting.

With a partner, Hatley started Sequoia Analytical Labs in February 2011. The company tests cannabis, edibles, tinctures and oils from many collectives in Sacramento and in Northern California, assessing the quality and safety of samples. Sequoia also tests medicine for walk-in patients.

“We need to make sure that the medicine is safe, but we also want to make sure that the customer is getting what he or she paid for.”

“The three things we look for are quality assurance, dosage and labeling,” Hatley says.

“We look at the dosage to make sure the labeling matches the potency, and we also want to make sure the cannabis is safe. We look to see if the sample is free of molds, pesticides and bug excrement, and we also check for salmonella and E. coli. We have a bevy of tests to make sure it is safe for patients.”

In the future, Hatley hopes to see more dispensaries standardize dosage and increase their safety measures for patients. For now, Hatley says Sequoia will work with any dispensary that wants to create a label to let patients know the cannabis has been tested. A few dispensaries have already taken that step.

“This is an industry that needs regulation for obvious reasons,” Hatley says. “We need to make sure that the medicine is safe, but we also want to make sure that the customer is getting what he or she paid for.”

Because dispensaries have different ways of measuring potency, Hatley says there may be disparity between what different locations label as “double strength.” Using two gas chromatographs — analytical pieces of equipment used to measure cannabis potency — Sequoia staff can determine the exact levels for 66 different cannabinoids, including cannabinol (CBN), cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the most well-known psychoactive ingredient in medical marijuana.

Hatley says the service his lab offers is important because the lab lets patients know exactly what they are getting from a dispensary. In one case, Hatley says it helped a mom find the correct dosage for her epileptic child.

I’m not interested in joining debates over whether Charlie Hebdo, the Paris satire newspaper where 10 staffers and two policemen were killed by religious extremists last week, produced racist by Dave Kempa or offensive material. These conversations are important, of course. Hell, they’re necessary in a society where most speech—even racist, homophobic vitriol—is protected. But my immediate response to the massacre has been to grieve, and to worry: These people were killed for nothing more than the words and images they published. As a writer, I find solidarity that our Western world values free expression. I’m glad I’m not alone.

Throughout the United States, the aftermath of the attacks has brought about countless affirmations on the importance of our First Amendment. But we often forget that, in this Western world, free speech hasn’t been around for more than a few centuries. Even today, while we consider it a basic human right, It may be unfair to it flourishes and wilts dependcelebrate Charlie ing on cultural and historical contexts. It may be unfair, for Hebdo’s provocative example, to celebrate Charlie drawings of Muhammad Hebdo’s provocative drawings without also mentioning of Muhammad without also mentioning France’s troubling France’s troubling burqa ban.

Even in this country, we have burqa ban. our own odd narrative regarding drawing Muhammad. In 2010, the comedy show South Park was to air an episode involving the Muslim prophet as a central character. But after a radical group called Revolution Muslim posted a warning online that the show’s creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone risked death if the episode ran, the cable TV network Comedy Central caved, refusing to air it without censoring images of Muhammad.

In response, a freelance cartoonist for Seattle Weekly named Molly Norris contributed artwork for an online campaign titled Everybody Draw Muhammad Day. Norris’ drawing was rather innocuous—it involved inanimate objects such as a teacup and spool of thread claiming to be Muhammad—but group members began posting increasingly offensive images of the Muslim prophet. She did her best to distance herself from the movement, but it was too late: That summer, the American-Yemeni Al Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki placed the Seattle cartoonist on a kill list.

American officials confirmed the severity of this threat, and Norris was forced to change her name and go into hiding under FBI protection.

Over the past decade, this nation has gained notoriety for desecrating the rights we claim to protect. We send drones to kill U.S. citizens without trial. We detain and torture men for 13 years, never charging them with a crime, and then send the whistleblowers of these injustices to prison. And yet here we are, fighting so hard for something as absurd as drawing the likeness of a long-dead prophet.

Nine years ago this month, a SWAT team arrested Eric McDavid and two of his buddies in a Kmart parking lot in Auburn. The trio were nabbed with shopping bags containing cleaning supplies and a Pyrex bowl—all bomb-making supplies according to the FBI. McDavid, 28, and his friends Lauren Weiner and Zachary Jenson, both 20, were accused by the government of planning a bombing spree viN AR G through Northern California, targeting o SM

The arrest happened January 13, 2006.

Jenson and Weiner pleaded to lesser charges and avoided further jail time. In 2008, McDavid was convicted of conspiracy and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

But it’s hard to imagine that there would have been any conspiracy without the care and feeding provided by the FBI’s paid confidential informant in the case, a woman identified in court records only as “Anna.”

Anna was trawling for radicals at an anarchist convention in Iowa in 2004 when she first met McDavid and Jenson. There was some romantic tension there, or at least McDavid thought there was. The boys met Anna again in Philadelphia, joined this time by Lauren Weiner, and the group started to talk about the possibility of some “direct action.” It might have remained talk, if not for Anna’s coordination, cajoling and checkbook.

According to court documents, it was Anna who bought the plane ticket for Weiner to travel to California. It was Anna who came up with the recipe for a homemade incendiary bomb. It was Anna who rented the cabin near Auburn where the group made their plans, or failed to.

Transcripts of the conversations Anna secretly recorded show that the anarchists were, well, unorganized and indecisive. “You guys seem like you don’t want to do it at all,” Anna sulked. “I wish one day we could keep the damned plan. I wish one day you guys could stick to a list.”

McDavid’s defense lawyer, Mark Reichel, argued entrapment. But often when Reichel requested documents, he was told by the government that no such records existed. “We knew then it was bullshit,” says McDavid’s partner and advocate, Jenny Esquivel.

McDavid was sentenced in 2008, his appeal in 2010 failed. But Esquivel and other friends kept filing Freedom of Information Act requests, trying to track down the missing evidence.

And ultimately, the government did admit it had the records, thousands of pages in fact. There are documents showing emails and love notes between McDavid and Anna, and evidence that Anna’s FBI handlers wanted to give their informant a polygraph, then changed their minds.

“The correspondence tells us further that Anna created the conspiracy. She used a variety of emotionally manipulative tactics,” says Esquivel.

Federal prosecutors say the missing evidence was “not exculpatory,” and the withholding of the documents was inadvertent.

Whether it was a mistake or deliberate, it was a very big deal. Last week federal prosecutors and the judge in McDavid’s case, Morrison England, agreed that McDavid’s sentence should be vacated because of the government’s failure to turn over evidence. McDavid went home to Auburn on January 8.

He did have to make a deal and plead to a lesser conspiracy charge in order to get out.

He also had to agree to give up his right to sue the government.

McDavid’s release is remarkable. But the way he ended up in prison is more common than you might think. There are stories all around the country of the government going to extraordinary lengths to initiate and help along “terrorist” conspiracies that would otherwise never materialize. (See “Conspiracy of Dunces” by Cosmo Garvin; SN&R Feature Story; July 27, 2006, for the anatomy of the McDavid sting.)

If you don’t find McDavid’s story troubling, go find the mind-boggling This American Life episode “Arms Trader.” Or Trevor Aaronson’s story “The Informants” in Mother Jones, a closeup look at how the FBI blurs the line between pre-empting terrorist plots and manufacturing them. There are, of course, actual terrorists out there, plotting murders like in Boston or Paris. But these informant-driven cases seem focused on talkers, not killers.

“There are a lot of people in prison who are not guilty, who were targeted for their religion or their politics,” says Esquivel.

Bed ridden Sacramento County’s psychiatric bill soaring What’s good for the patient is proving costly to the county—and reawakening a debate about Sacramento’s approach to by psychiatric care.

Last month, county supervisors redirected more than $3.5 million to cover an enlarged bill for inpatient hospitalizations, on top of an additional $122,000 approved back in September.

Those projections may not hold, as they’re based on August 2014 invoices, which saw a big leap from the month before. But the county Department of Health & Human Services is already broke with six months left on the contract.

“We’re out of money to pay the psychiatric bills,” Health & Human Services director Sherri Heller acknowledged during a supervisors meeting on December 9.

She said local Medi-Cal recipients languish an average of six to eight weeks waiting for their first therapy appointment and can’t access inpatient services without first going to the emergency room. According to John Boyd, CEO of the 73-bed Sutter Center for Psychiatry, that translates into more than 17,000 ER visits by people who need crisis stabilization, not hospitalization. “We are hospitalizing people that … don’t need hospitalization,” he told supervisors.

Boyd and Gallagher urged elected officials to shift resources toward crisis stabilization, as other California counties have successfully done, and create more regional psychiatric health facilities of 16 beds or less, which are Medi-Cal reimbursable.

But Boyd remained skeptical. “The dialogue with the county, historically, has been very insignificant,” he said. Ω 12 | SN&R | 01.15.15

Street strife Activists say the city is criminalizing homelessness.

Others point out all the positive changes.

It’s a new year, and activist groups are fighting the city over what they consider a laundry by list of ordinances and actions geared at Brooke Purves making things more difficult for homeless Sacramentans. These activists are unequivocal in their position: They say the city has made homelessness a crime.

They say there’s motive, too. Local attorney Mark Merin claims that the increased pressure on homeless people is tied to the arena deal. “The truth is, [the city wants] to beautify the downtown. [It] had a very conscious program,” he said.

The next action will be the A Right to Rest rally on the Capitol Mall next week, on January 20. This protest will immediately precede oral arguments in an appeals case concerning the constitutionality of Sacramento’s illegal-camping ordinance—

a hot button issue for homeless-rights advocates, and a case involving Merin directly.

Several people whom Merin gave permission to use his fenced-in property at C and 13th streets were repeatedly removed in 2009, their belongings confiscated by Sacramento police, he says, all because these individuals were sleeping outside.

Merin sued the city in February 2010, but the case was thrown out, the judge upholding Sacramento’s ordinance as protective of public health and safety. He filed an appeal, arguing that making it a crime to sleep outside when no shelter space is available is a violation of constitutional rights.

The cause of that jump isn’t clear, but Maya Wallace, external affairs director at Sacramento Steps Forward, suggests the increase in arrests could be attributed to more people camping on the streets in general, or to the increased construction activity in the downtown area. When a city undergoes a major constructive change, she said, “people get pushed to the margins.”

But numbers like these have prompted Sacramento Steps Forward to work with the city. Last year, city council approved up to $1 million over a two-year period in a partnership with Steps Forward. The money will help utilize a new assessment tool—a database of the homeless individuals in the area and the services they receive—as well support an expanded outreach program, which will target services in the areas where more homeless people are dying.

Brown from the Sac PD couldn’t comment as to what’s causing so many illegal-camping arrests, but he did tell SN&R he didn’t think he’d find any arrests for serving or eating at illegal food-sharing events.

New review

Activists also have been targeting the city’s food-sharing ordinance recently.

Protesters with the Community Dinner Project serve meals in front of City Hall before every city council meeting, on Tuesdays, in direct defiance of a 2012 ordinance specifically prohibiting such events.

The police often supervise these meals, but Sgt. Rachel Ellis told SN&R this is because, at one such dinner back in December, “fights have erupted” among members of homeless communities who don’t get along.

Cesar Chavez Park has long been an epicenter of homeless activity and also a place where organizations handed out meals to the public for years.

Activists are concerned, now, about the recent closing of the park’s permanent restrooms, forcing homeless individuals—and anyone else in the park with a full bladder—to spend money to use “for customers only” restrooms in businesses. Or “go” outside.

Attorney Mark Merin sued the city over the unconstitutionality of its illegal-camping laws, but lost. A judge will hear an appeal this week.

June 2014 saw a new ordinance specifically restricting aggressive solicitation. But it also prohibits asking for money around businesses, bus stops and medians—any location anybody can make any money, said Paula Lomazzi, executive director of Sacramento Homeless Organizing Committee.

Also last year, the Old Foothill Farms Community Task Force pushed out a recycling center at Madison Avenue and Auburn Boulevard in the county—and along with it, another source of income for some homeless individuals.

But Michael Baker, a trustee for the Twin Rivers Unified School District and task-force spokesperson, says that most of the neighborhood’s petty crimes—people knocking on doors asking for money, garages broken into, bicycles stolen, lawn items missing— happened when people were scavenging for recyclables, and that those crimes dropped by half when the recycling center closed.

That number is purely anecdotal, but it’s something Baker and others in the community stand by.

City council has been responding to activists’ concerns, at least to some extent. To better serve the population in question, and to address the real issues resulting from chronic homelessness, Sacramento’s first homeless-services coordinator, Emily Hallon, started work this month.

And the money allocated to Steps Forward was on top of the more than $2.5 million the city already spends annually on other homeless services, including the motel-voucher program and emergency shelters, according to a city report.

Whether this is enough of an effort to appease activists for the time being will play out in the months ahead.

If demonstrations at City Hall don’t bring about the intended results, some, like Claire White, who was arrested for disrupting a December 9 city council meeting where she was protesting, are prepared to force a referendum for appeal on the ballot during the next citywide election. Ω

Alan Tomiyama, recreation manager for the Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation, wrote in an email that those restrooms are the responsibility of the adjoining restaurant, Cafe Soleil, which closed permanently last month.

They are not intended as public restrooms, he explained, and will remain closed until a new tenant secures the space.

But attention on the homeless population can’t all be attributed to the new home for the Kings. Things have been tightening up in Sacramento County, too.

Former city council member, now Assemblyman Kevin McCarty wants to change how the state reviews officer-involved shootings.

Last week, McCarty introduced legislation that would mandate external and outside review of all police shootings in California. The Assembly member hopes the bill will resolve who should investigate law-enforcement when a shooting or action results in a fatality.

Here in Sacramento, the district attorney’s office investigates all officer-involved shootings. The catch is that the DA uses police investigations for its final report, and the DA also has a strong connection to local law enforcement. Previously, the DA had eliminated review of police shootings altogether due to budget cuts.

Brunch, interrupted The movement “Black Brunch” might be coming to a Sacramento restaurant near you. And the city police department wants you to know that they’re there to bust protesters if you don’t like your eggs Benedict interrupted.

Black Brunch, an action in response to the officer involved deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, is when predominately black activists overtake a restaurant during brunch-hour on weekends. Their goal is to bring attention to the issue of police shootings and law-enforcement brutality.

Last Wednesday, Sacramento police issued a public-safety email that notified business owners that “#blackbrunch” activists intend to “apply this tactic” in Sacramento soon.

“In the event that your establishments [sic] is targeted by this tactic and you are not in support of it disrupting your business please notify law enforcement as soon as possible,” the email read. “[Be] aware of odd number of persons gathering conspicuously in or about your business.”

The police remind that protesters have a right to air their grievances so long as they do not disturb businesses. There were not any Black Brunch events in Sacramento this past weekend. (N.M.)

Don’t go directly to jail Ascend, an offender rehabilitation program that once scraped for support from a skeptical law-enforcement community, is now flourishing under contracts with Sacramento County’s sheriff’s and probation departments, its co-founder said.

Ascend takes mostly court-ordered individuals who are moderate-to-high-risk of re-offending and plunges them into a Sacramento State University-designed curriculum. According to data collected by Sac State, the program has steered the vast majority of its law-breaking clients back down the straight and narrow.

Since opening August 2011 in a borrowed classroom near the Arden Arcade neighborhood, the little rehab program that could has welcomed 123 men and women. Only 20 graduates—or 16 percent—got new convictions since then.

That success rate is much higher than the county’s or state’s recidivism rate of about 60 percent.

“Many have gotten their driver’s licenses back, visitation and custody rights restored regarding their children and other positive life steps,” says co-founder Christine Morse. “Among our students, there has been far less crime than there otherwise would have been.”

Ascend is now in its third year-long contract with the sheriff’s department, and third six-month-long contract, worth $50,000, with the probation department. (Raheem F. Hosseini)

o, it’s two weeks into the New Year and, let’s face it, 2015’s already a fail. At least as far as all those New Year’s resolutions go.

Seriously, why should this year be any different? According to a study from the University of Scranton’s Journal of Clinical Psychology, 45 percent of Americans make resolutions each January (“Lose weight,” “Learn something exciting” and “Spend less, save more” were among last year’s top promises). Thing is, only 8 percent actually achieve their goals.

Why even bother?

Listen, we’re not saying you should scratch big picture goals; maybe you should lose that last 5 pounds (if we’re being honest here) but to that end, rock-hard abs are over-rated, it’s been shown that alcohol has health benefits and, when it comes to money, you can’t take it with you.

In other words the occasional trip to the strip club or a weekend spent boozing and bingewatching Peaky Blinders is probably not going to kill you. Probably.

Besides, whoever decided inner peace was the be-all, end-all goal of human existence clearly never experienced the belly warmth of a good, frothy rage. Being pissed off feels good. And, in these justice-indifferent times, it’s possibly the only satisfaction you’ll get.

So, instead of passing another futile resolution to let the little things slide and “be a better person” (whatever that means), here are a few reasons you should get better at holding onto your anger. Ulcers be damned.

Letting go is for quitters.

Transcendence is hard. We’ve tried letting go.

It didn’t take. We remain pissy as ever, but now with an added layer of guilt for not attaining some lifestyle magazine’s idea of “enlightenment.” But maybe our mistake was in trying to overcome our base nature, rather than owning it. After all, what unifies the human experience more than dissatisfaction? It’s what propelled us out of the caves and keeps us trying to make a decent Spider-Man film. We are, at our core, miserable bastards. Or, as was written of that original curmudgeon, Lucifer, in Paradise Lost: “Horror and doubt distract / His troubled thoughts, and from the bottom stir / The hell within him; for within him Hell / He brings, and round about him, nor from Hell / One step, no more than from Himself, can fly / By change of place.”

Got that? Hell isn’t a place we go to, like Boca Raton. It’s something we carry within. Like herpes.

No one else is moving on. Take Sacramento.

The arena, strong mayor, affordable housing—we pull at these scabs again and again regardless of what the research, votes or courts say. Our natural state is political intractability.

Outside these borders, the world is even less forgiving. Russia’s acting like a Cold War prick again; Israel and Palestine are merely taking a break from being at each other’s throats; and America just got pulled back into Iraq like an aging Michael Corleone. Everything old is new again, including a much-ballyhooed Clinton-Bush face-off in 2016. Even the stuff we’ve tried desperately to leave behind—like the CIA’s use of grotesque, ineffective torture techniques on terror suspects, some of whom were stone-cold innocent—won’t quit us.

Maybe the lesson is this: Until you let the truth have its day, there is no moving on. That’s a fire that has to burn itself out. Which brings us to the final reason: Anger works. Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai are among the social-justice bosses who recognized the import of righteous indignation in getting shit done. You think equal rights movements budge without sustained outrage? Not likely.

Just this past year, SN&R applied pique and persistence in exposing the city of Sacramento’s wasteful approach to installing water meters and correcting the record about unfairly smeared late journalist Gary Webb.

If anything, it’s the absence of grudge warfare that leads to our biggest failures. Sen. Elizabeth Warren notwithstanding, the political unwillingness to prosecute the billionaire schmucks behind a global financial meltdown is paving the road to another fiscal catastrophe. Case in point: Wall Street banking interests recently spiked the “Cromnibus” spending bill with language that walked back financial reforms and campaign financing limits. Both houses passed it without blinking.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama’s insistence that the nation “woosa” past the damning torture revelations only ensures that the Ghost of Dick Cheney will haunt this nation for decades to come.

No, granting forgiveness without demanding change is like trying to survive an illegal police chokehold. After a while, you can’t breathe.

Stay angry, my friends. Ω

t’s mid-afternoon on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s Day and I’m still not dressed. My hair’s a rat’s nest and I’m sipping on a two-hours’ cold cup of coffee while my husband and I gently argue over which movie to queue up next. At least I’ve brushed my teeth. It’s the little victories.

I never did manage to get dressed on that particular day. What would have been the point? The holidays were, for all intents and purposes, over. Now it was time to condition for the ultimate January, one comprising a gloriously lazy and indulgent unholy trinity: drinking, binge-watching and napping.

So far this month we’ve spent every possible free moment alternating between episodes of the The Wire and Gilmore Girls (an oddly perfect combination), sipping on heavy winter ales and Manhattans,

pausing only to hunker down in the dark bedroom with three cats for a nap.

And so it will go for the remainder of the month.

Eat better, exercise more, drink less? Nope.

Keep your so-called Drynuary and that unrealistic exercise schedule. Screw yoga and juice cleanses and any other detox, de-stress efforts. While the rest of the world makes a futile attempt at selfimprovement, the only resolution I’ve made is be kinder to myself.

This means unwinding, recharging and reveling in the bliss of an empty social calendar and a full Netflix queue.

After a season of fancy dresses and uncomfortable heels, January slips on like my favorite sweatshirt, cozy and without pretense. No awkward parties, no white elephant gift exchanges, no tense family dinners.

I didn’t always take this approach. In the past I made resolutions and set goals. I set my alarm for a chilly, pre-dawn workout. I bought kale and baby carrots and hid the bourbon.

Then, at the dawn of 2007 I found myself sick—horribly ill with a lingering bout of bronchitis that settled into my chest for the long, phlegmy haul. Armed with a doctor’s note and a boxful of Kleenex I lived on my couch that month, catching up on Lost and sipping hot toddies between naps.

By the time February rolled around, my chest had cleared and my energy returned. I felt oddly renewed and ready to face the world.

In the years since, I’ve made this routine. Factor out any debilitating cough, achiness and sneezing and it’s a lovely ritual.

Fuel up : Stock up the fridge and bar and make sure the number for a pizza delivery place has been programmed into your phone. The whole point of nesting away a January weekend is just that: nesting. If one must leave the house to hunt down food or alcohol, it’s an immediate fail.

Choose wisely : You could spend 236 hours watching Friends—no judgment, honest—but is that really the best use of your binge-watching talents? There’s an undeniably satisfying feeling that comes from cramming the entire run of a meatier series such as Breaking Bad, Sherlock or Damages into one short month. Dr. Who, anyone?

Pace yourself : Whether it’s the booze, snooze or boob tube, be sure to set a reasonable pace. Limit day drinking to the lighter stuff such as low-octane beer, mimosas or, better yet, coffee spiked with a slug of whiskey. This approach ensures you’ll have the mental wherewithal to stay faithful to the screen with only minimal napping. This last part is key. Naps are awesome. Naps are heaven. Naps are, truthfully, sometimes my entire reason for being. But if your nap is part of a Big Picture Laziness endeavor then it’s actually counter-intuitive to doze off for too long. Thirty minutes is ideal, 45-minutes should be the max—anything longer and you’ll likely cross over to the dark side.

James Bond the secret agent who can trust no one. Strippers want you to feel like Bond, and if you let on that it’s going to your head, even ever so slightly, some will prey on that until you’re reaching for lint in your pockets.

I went into Deja Vu Showgirls (11252 Trade Center Drive in Rancho Cordova) on a recent Tuesday night, feeling like I was entering the Macau casino from Skyfall: I’ve got a million-dollar chip in my pocket; serpents, temptresses and henchmen alike await my next move. Ushered to the back, I meet with the manager, Bobby, who is the unicorn of strip-club managers, so mythical in generosity and affability I’d think I imagined it all had a friend not gotten the same praiseworthy service two nights later. Bobby assures me of royal treatment: If I need it, ask him. Five minutes later, I’m slumped in a chair 10 feet from the stage with a towering vape hookah on the table, a stack of protective plastic hookah caps for cleanliness at its base, and a bottle of Vitamin Water’s XXX brand for hydration. The bottle reads, “If X marks the spot, three of them have gotta be a good thing.”

Seated to my right is Jaime, a drink server that looks just old enough to be employable. On my left is Ruby, a 20-something dancer with fading red highlights—hence the stage name.

And it’s as though I could not escape the night without hearing those words.

The deejay, C.J., walks over to me with rings in his hand, each roughly five inches in diameter.

He says something like “leaving already?” and informs me, as guest of honor, I was about to be asked to play dildo ring toss on stage.

Sunday Cinema Series: Love is Strange Sunday, January 18

O

ften, New Year’s resolutions include generally unrealistic goals such as learning a new language. Let’s get real here: It’ll take way more than a year to be fluent in a new language, and a lifetime of practice to master one. How about just pledging to learn something new this weekend, and then dropping the whole resolution idea altogether? This week, there are plenty of educational opportunities for those who want to learn something new and interesting—all in just a few hours’ time.

First up is Nevada City’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival (www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org), which boasts the tagline “where activism gets inspired.” Yes, it’ll have tons of documentaries that raise awareness about various environmental issues.

But it’s also way more than just a film festival, with adventure outings, lectures, art, music, shopping, awards and parties— spanning multiple venues in Nevada City and Grass Valley. It happens Thursday, January 15, through Sunday, January 18.

Then there’s MLK365.org’s Capitol March for the Dream, on Monday, January 19. It starts at Sacramento City College (3835 Freeport Boulevard) at 9 a.m. and arrives at the Sacramento Convention Center (1400 J Street) for a Diversity

On Tuesday, January 20, television journalist, author and former child model Anderson Cooper will speak as part of the Sacramento Speaker Series (www.sacramentospeakers.com). According to the event web page, Bakos played a role in “mining and interpreting” data, which helped end the long hunt for Osama bin Laden. Petey’s Fried ChiCken, south Hotly anticipated South opened in December, with a menu of classic and modern Southern fare and former Revolution Wines executive chef Rachel Kelly in the kitchen. From the get-go, the restaurant’s soul seemed to lay in its fried chicken. (Just look at the URL.) The recipe belongs to co-owner N’Gina Kavookjian’s Mississippi family—in other words, homey, nofrills tradition. A crunchy, thick and salty crust gives way to sweet, tender insides, while a bed of kale sops up meaty drippings underneath. At $13, it’s certainly an easier weeknight outing than the $20-plus fried chicken plates at other grid restaurants. But you’ll probably want to order some cheesy sides with that.

Veggie feasts: The “Chefs 10” at Mother (1023 K Street) was a magical thing.

Eight savory dishes, two sweet, all changing all the time—and more than enough to feed two people at a totally reasonable $50.

But it’s gone now. Sorry. Mother served its last on New Year’s Eve. Why get rid of such an attraction?

Co-owner Ryan Donahue said it was part logistical—the orders sometimes slowed down the kitchen—but mostly, the Mother team wants to be a constantly evolving, challenging entity.

In other words: “We were getting bored,” Donahue said.

At some point in the near future, Mother plans to unveil a replacement.

Donahue said the chefs are still tweaking the concept, but it will probably be something like a Japanese bento box, featuring a bunch of different small bites. It could be a one-person meal, or a taster-style appetizer for more. And, ideally, paired with beverages.

Ramen dreams: The original Shoki Ramen House (2675 24th Street) closed on December 30, but another location will open just a few blocks away at what was once Trails Restaurant (2530 21st Street).

original restaurant’s old-timey, Western decor and historic neon sign will stay in place. OK, maybe the latter is actually bad news.

Beer me: Expect a lot of beer news in the coming months. A soft opening at Track 7 Brewing’s massive Natomas taproom should happen any day now, with grand opening celebrations in time for Sacramento Beer Week (February 27 through March 9). Sactown Union Brewery, located in industrial East Sacramento, is also expected to open by Beer Week.

Its anticipated beer arsenal features exciting flavors like tamarind, blackberry and sorrel, along with some sours and barrel-aged brews—co-owner Quinn Gardner comes from San Francisco’s 21st Amendment Brewery.

Then we’ve got West Sacramento’s Jackrabbit Brewing—its Belgian-style farmhouse ale is popular in area restaurants and bars—which has been planning a taproom for ages. Construction is underway. Construction is also long underway at Twelve Rounds Brewing, hopefully opening in March in East Sacramento, and Dragas Brewing, aiming for an early February launch in Rocklin. Whew. Thirsty yet? Ω

It’s January. So we’re all totally being healthy now, right? Well, either way, East Sacramento’s new coldpressed juice bar Liquidology offers some intrigue: “About Last Night.” It’s apparently juice to cure hangovers, getting its stark, black color from activated coconut charcoal. The charcoal is believed to help digestive issues and “detox” the body, if you’re someone who believes in “detoxing.” It’s a delicious beverage regardless— cool, refreshing watermelon juice made even brighter with bursts of lemon and mint. Orange you glad satsumas Some of the finest satsuma mandarins in the world are grown in Placer County. These little orange bulbs look an awful lot like clementines and tangerines, and the varieties often get all confused with each other. All three feature thin, easy-to-peel skins and segmentation, making them an ideal, sniffle-fighting movie theater snack. But the seedless satsumas are sweeter and juicier, with thin membranes nearly bursting with liquid. Heavier oranges usually mean more juice, so pick firm satsumas with no hollow spots. Find them at any area farmers market—though not for much longer. The season concludes at the end of January.

Breaking noodle news I’m not a Pastafarian, but I’m pretty crazy for noodle soup. In particular, I’ve long felt something resembling religious fanaticism toward Asian noodle soups—and thankfully Sacramento boasts some pretty good spots for ramen, pho, hu teiu, khao poon, Phnom Penhstyle noodles and Taiwanese beef noodle soup. Good news: Midtown will get a taste of a few more noodle soups this year because of an ownership change at Sawasdee Thai Cuisine (1830 J Street) in late December. The place has been completely revamped with a new concept, new chef and new dishes, according to the new owner.

SN&R has yet to try it, but recent Yelp reviews since the changeover have buzzed about a boat noodle soup, tum yum noodle soup and even a vegan bowl of Bangkok Noodles. My current favorite bowl of tom yum noodle soup is at Phaya Thai (4310 Marconi Avenue), so I’m excited to see how Sawasdee’s stacks up.

No longer sidekicks The (Curious Case of the) Watson Intelligence All any Watson wants is a little respect, and maybe even a little recognition. That’s one of a couple of premises explored by Madeleine George’s by Patti Roberts play The (Curious Case of the) Watson Intelligence, now being staged at B Street Theatre in its more experimental B2 Space.

The play, a finalist for the 2014 Pulitzer Prize, mixes the idea of “Watsons”—the integral though mostly overlooked partners in famous twosome teams—with the way technology affects our relationships with each other.

Here’s one thing you can say about Nunsense: It’s habit-forming. (The show’s opening number is called “Nunsense is Habit-Forming”). OK, bad joke, especially if it needed explaining—but there are plenty of moredelicious groaners in this musical comedy about the five surviving members of the Little Sisters of Hoboken. They stage a variety show to raise money to bury four of their number killed by tainted vichyssoise served up by the order’s cook, Sister Julia, Child of God. The original New York production was the third-longest-running offBroadway show in history. And it has become a staple of community theater groups across the country. Take that, doubters! The Addams Family PhoTo CouRTeSy oF B STReeT TheATRe

Without a doubt, what’s best about Runaway Stage’s musical tale of the creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky clan we know as the Addams family are the two lead actors. Mark Ettensohn’s Gomez is all at once tuneful, knowing, shamelessly kitschy and oh so self-ironic.

He is fully matched by Carolyn Watling’s portrayal of Morticia, the slyly cool vampy vixen immortalized for television by that other Carolyn—Carolyn Jones. When these two are on stage, everything else fades away, which is how it’s possible to recognize a perfect match made in regions much lower than heaven.

Ettensohn and Watling are aided by an excellent Lurch (Jerry Gray), a fine Wednesday (Karissa Lee Carleton), Pugsley (Jerry Gray), Grandma (Karene Vocque), and a very good Uncle Fester (Chad Marquis). Andrew Lippa— of The Wild Party fame—has written some extremely funny songs, including “Crazier Than You,” a love song that would chill the cockles of Charles Addams’ warped little heart.

On the other hand, the storyline—by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice—is every bit as thin as a half-hour sitcom and twice as predictable. It’s only saved by the oddities inherent in the family itself and by the willingness of a nostalgic generation to snap in time to the familiar theme song.

Big kudos for a detailed and well-handled set with atmospheric props. Bob Baxter’s direction keeps things moving along at a good clip. Choreography by Darryl Strohl-De Herrera adds some nice touches to Gomez and Morticia’s traditional tango, and the RSP Orchestra, directed by Glenn Disney, remains a delight for community musical theater.

As an exercise in dark, fluffy fun, The Addams Family is a winner.

Let’s start with the first premise, Watsons playing second banana and coming across as essential but less appealing than their more familiar cohorts. Here are the five Watsons portrayed, both famous and not-so-famous: Sherlock Holmes’ Watson, Alexander Graham Bell’s Watson, the Watson computer, an android and a mild-mannered computer technician. All five Watsons are playfully and warmly portrayed

by B Street regular David Pierini, who partners with two more of his talented B Street buddies Kurt Johnson and Elisabeth Nunziato to provide a whole cornucopia of characters and eras, from the 1800s to the present.

Though the Watsons are a central theme in Watson Intelligence, the character whose story comprises the main arc of the play is Eliza (Nunziato), a tech developer trying to perfect an android that will help those in need of communicating directly and succinctly. Mingled throughout the play are explorations of our dependency on emerging technologies throughout history.

Watson Intelligence is not a linear play. It jumps around in both theme and in time. The ideas are compelling, and the script is whimsical, smart and heartfelt. Sometimes you just wish that the focus was more on the fascinating Watson sidekick angle, and less on integrating the technology issue into every story line.

A mental-illness musical?

When Robert Louis Stevenson penned The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde he could never have anticipated a national tour of Jekyll & Hyde, a musical starring biochemistry major Aleks Knezevich in the dual-title role.

Stevenson’s dark tale of the good and evil residing in each of us takes a unique twist from the original Broadway musical that debuted nearly 20 years ago, as this version more deeply examines mental illness, especially schizophrenia, and the struggle faced by a person with mental illness in society. No one saw Trouble with the Curve, so the last image that most people have of octogenarian actor/ filmmaker Clint Eastwood is him at the 2012 by Daniel Barnes GOP convention, losing an argument with an empty chair. Therefore, there was good reason to fear the worst with his adaptation of American Sniper, the biography of deceased Iraq veteran Chris Kyle, who was known as the deadliest sniper in American military history. So what a fantastic surprise that rather than an uncritical testament to the might of the armed forces (Heartbreak Ridge 2, say), Eastwood delivers this complex, conflicted and profoundly moving look at the military machine, and the toll it takes on the soldiers who keep getting shoveled back into the fire.

By my own admission, I’m not a fan of Clint Eastwood the director; I’ve never been a fan, but American Sniper is a great film. It’s Eastwood’s best movie (so far), and there is such a steely visual and narrative confidence here where I once saw the perfunctory and obvious, that it practically forces me to reevaluate everything I thought I knew about him as a director.

American Sniper possesses the sweep and scope of Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter, but very little of that movie’s romantic grandeur.

Eastwood is after something smaller and more personal—while Cimino turned the Vietnam War experience into myth, here Eastwood undermines the legend of a contemporary American warrior even as he is creating it.

In American Sniper, we get a man—and by extension, a nation—whose entire sense of selfworth is dependent on his image as a gun-toting protector of the weak. Bradley Cooper stars as Kyle, a Texas-bred cowboy whose upbringing mixed firearms, family, religion, patriotism and personal destiny in a way that would prove indelible. An early flashback sequence to Kyle’s childhood is the single best thing that Eastwood has ever done, and he seemingly channels the simple intensity of Nick Ray or Phil Karlson for this precise and penetrating piece of filmmaking.

Under the threat of the belt, Kyle’s father teaches him that there are three types of people in the world: sheep, the wolves that prey on them and the sheepdogs that protect the sheep from

the wolves by any means necessary. Kyle spends the rest of his life trying to live up to the ideal of the sheepdog, eventually joining the Navy SEALs and distinguishing himself as a marksman. However, when the film finally circles back to the opening sequence in Iraq, we see Kyle notch his first kill by gunning down a woman and her child. The wanton bloodshed that Kyle encounters in Iraq challenges his self-identity as a protector, and he is never more paralyzed by duty and doubt then when he returns home to his family.

Bradley Cooper continues a string of strong and sadly underrated performances as Kyle (Cooper was the best part of David O. Russell’s American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook, and did excellent work in compromised movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Place Beyond the Pines), insanely beefed up but also subtle and dignified.

Cooper doesn’t get big, grandstanding speeches or monumental breakdowns—Kyle carries the war inside of him, not on his sleeve, so Cooper has to suggest massive emotional turmoil while retaining a placid and determined demeanor.

Unfortunately, the intellectually reductive attack dogs of “awards season” have already gone after American Sniper. Many of the attacks have focused on factual holes in Kyle’s story, but historical inaccuracy doesn’t make a biopic bad any more than scientific accuracy made Interstellar good. Even worse, Eastwood’s film has been positioned as the red-state opponent to Ava DuVernay’s blue-state Selma. When American Sniper nabbed a Producers Guild Award nomination ahead of Selma, Indiewire called it “a victory for steak eaters.” The not-sosubtle implication: a vote for Selma is a vote for civil rights and a vote for American Sniper is a vote for guns and war. That’s insane. If a film is worth no more than the sum of its subject matter, then the pro-literacy, anti-Holocaust, humanist treacle-fest The Book Thief is a stone-cold cinematic masterpiece, and that’s not a world worth protecting by anyone. Director Tim Burton and writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski tell the story of artist Margaret Keane (Amy Adams) and her husband Walter (Christoph Waltz), who made a fortune in the 1950s and ’60s marketing her paintings of wispy, huge-eyed waifs while claiming to have painted them himself. The look is brighter than the usual Burton film—all breezy California sunshine and vivid retro fashions— but the underpinnings are as dark as ever, fraught with subtle psychological abuse and manipulation, encapsulated in Waltz’s unctuous smile that never quite spreads as far as his shifty, empty eyes. His Walter is the epitome of the oily small-time con man who hits it big, while Adams’ Margaret is a sweet spirit at first confused by Walter’s dishonesty, finally finding the strength to assert herself. A rare specimen of intelligent bear from “darkest Peru” (voice by Ben Whishaw) emigrates to London, where he is taken in by an English family—to the delight of the mother (Sally Hawkins) and son (Samuel Joslin), and the exasperation of the father (Hugh Bonneville) and daughter (Madeleine Harris). Soon, our furry hero attracts the attention of a cold-hearted scientist with a penchant for taxidermy (Nicole Kidman). Writer-director Paul King preserves the charm and sweetness of Michael Bond’s children’s books, while adding a feature-length plot and an opportunity for Kidman to trot out a serving of delicious, lip-smacking villainy. The movie is an irresistible charmer, endearing, family-friendly and hilariously funny. No matter what happens at the box office, the DVD is sure to sell millions of copies. J.L.

Selma

There is such a powerful convergence of hot-button topics in Ava DuVernay’s Selma, from civil rights to voting laws to police brutality to street protests to government surveillance, that even some of the film’s strongest proponents are positioning the film as a good-for-you, syllabus-ready obligation.

That’s an affront to the intelligence, cinematic flexibility and emotional satisfaction of this rousing film, which tracks the involvement of Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) in the 1965 voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Oyelowo is fantastic as MLK, a perfect mix of humanity and moral authority, and Carmen Ejogo is fine in the underdeveloped role of Coretta Scott King. Enough famous faces ham it up in bit parts that the film threatens to turn into Ava DuVernay’s Lee Daniels’ The Butler (a snarling Tim Roth as George Wallace is particularly distracting), but Oyelowo keeps it grounded and DuVernay keeps it moving. Released in 2008 just as Bush II’s term was winding down, the Pierre Moreldirected Taken set Liam Neeson’s angry father and his “special set” of torture tactics loose on the leering Eurotrash sleazeballs who kidnapped his daughter. It was idiotic but irresistible, a timely vision of the Ugly American unleashed abroad, and it started a new leading-man phase in Neeson’s career. The competent Morel was replaced on 2012’s Taken 2 by fellow Frenchman and Luc Besson disciple Olivier Megaton, who couldn’t direct his way out of a paper bag without changing screen direction 17 times. Megaton returns for Taken 3, and while the film is slightly more watchable than Taken 2, the franchise hook of Neeson’s righteous American flouting international law in order to “protect his family” is ditched in favor of a more familiar whodunit—the only thing “taken” here is the plot to almost every episode of Murder, She Wrote. A standup-comic-turned-moviestar-in-dopey-comedies (Chris Rock, who also wrote and directed) submits to a ride-along interview with a reporter (Rosario Dawson) to publicize his latest movie, an attempt at a serious drama about the 1791 Haitian Revolution. This raunchy, witty, smart and cheerfully profane comedy just may turn

out to be Rock’s Annie Hall. Not that it’s as good as Woody Allen’s 1977 breakthrough—not quite—but in the sense that Rock shows, as Allen did back then, unexpected depth and perception about celebrity and personal relations to go along with his edgy comedy riffs.

His conversations with Dawson crackle with intelligence and sexual chemistry, and a parade of guest artists—some playing characters, others as themselves—is folded into the mix with a minimum of awkwardness. J.L.

Wild

Director Jean-Marc Vallee follows up last year’s Oscar fave Dallas Buyers Club with another blatant awards grubber in Wild, based on the memoir by Cheryl Strayed. Reese Witherspoon plays Strayed, who in 1995 hiked over 1,000 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail, exorcising the demons that occupied the space left by her mother’s untimely death. Much like Dallas Buyers Club, Wild is a mix of unguarded rawness and mawkish calculation, equal parts honest inspiration and mercenary ambition.

Witherspoon is very good, not just deglamorized but immersed, and Laura Dern is every bit her equal as Strayed’s mother (another “dream Mom” role for Dern to match her turn earlier this year in The Fault in Our Stars). The editing, cinematography, sound design, nonlinear Nick Hornby script and PCT scenery are all exquisite, so perhaps the entire project is just a little too Hike, Pray, Love for this critic’s taste. In this Disney-fied adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Tony-winning musical, a selection of Grimm Brothers characters that includes Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Prince Charming and Cinderella come together in an attempt to reverse a witch’s curse. The Sondheim music is still utterly appalling, but at least it’s unmemorable, a monotonous series of tuneless and barely differentiated refrains masquerading as musical numbers (only one sequence—the princely preen-off “Agony”—sticks out). However, the appeal of Into the Woods was always the surprisingly dark book, and while James Lapine adapted his own stage material for the screen, he guts the second act, and the finished

With their many absentee fathers, robber-baron capitalists and would-be messiahs, the films of Paul Thomas Anderson portray the California Dream as an oft-repeated fall from grace of Biblical proportions. All pinned to the wall and linked together with an intricate series of colored strings, the Anderson oeuvre begins to form an alternate-history book of California as spoiled paradise, stretching from the oil field power struggles in There Will Be Blood to the millennium apocalypse anxieties of Magnolia, and now the “square is hip” conspiracy at the heart of his ramshackle masterpiece Inherent Vice. Joaquin Phoenix stars as the stoned-out-of-his-gourd private detective Larry “Doc” Sportello, who with his gentle nature and bong-rattled comprehension skills, makes for a perfect noir patsy. No matter how lost we are in the narrative, Doc is always a little more lost, never more so than when the frazzled ends of the mystery occasionally fit together. D.B.

During World War II, the eccentric, socially challenged math genius Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) leads a British cryptography unit charged with cracking Nazi Germany’s Enigma code, a hitherto unbreakable cipher that has defied all efforts to unravel it. Graham Moore’s script takes a few liberties with history, and his multiple-flashback structure is a bit awkward at times, but director Morten Tyldum smooths it all out into an expression of Turing’s psychological complexity. Cumberbatch’s masterful performance towers over the picture, but he has plenty of sturdy support—Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode and Allen Leech as co-workers, Charles Dance and Mark Strong as higher-ups, and (most especially) Alex Lawther as the teenage Turing, in a performance that complements and enriches Cumberbatch’s own. Foxcatcher

Steve Carell stars in Bennett Miller’s compelling Foxcatcher as the real-life billionaire John DuPont, heir to a legendary American fortune and a paranoid schizophrenic who murdered wrestling champion/ coach Dave Schultz in 1996. At first glance, Carell looks like a “stunt” choice for the part of DuPont, but it is inspired casting by Miller (Capote, Moneyball). With his awkward compulsion to be both father and brother, benefactor and lover, boss and buddy, DuPont has a lot in common with Carell’s heretofore most iconic role—Dunder Mifflin regional manager Michael Scott on TV’s The Office. While this is the darkest and bleakest role that Carell has ever played, he uses his comedy-honed physical and vocal chops (and generous amounts of makeup) to disappear into the role of the pale and paunchy DuPont. Miller and cinematographer Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty) abet Carell by giving Foxcatcher the teeming, sweat lodge claustrophobia of a wrestling room. D.B.

The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death

While London reels under the Blitz in 1940, two schoolteachers (Phoebe Fox, Helen McCrory) take a group of children to the presumed safety of the country—except that they’re assigned to the remote, decrepit, haunted house from 2012’s The Woman in Black.

Written (badly) by Jon Croker and directed (equally poorly) by Tom Harper, this is the kind of sequel that not only sullies the memory of the movie that came before—it makes you wonder if the original was as good as you thought it was. Fox’s character takes the customary stupidity of people in hack horror movies like this to mind-boggling depths, while Croker’s script is riddled with holes and loose ends. The result is a movie as miserable as the house where it takes place. The obnoxious music by Marco Beltrami and Brandon Roberts is another minus. J.L.

M. Born also lends itself to the phrase “I am born,” which Nuevo describes as “the philosophy of being reborn every day.” Constant opportunity around every corner. He believes the mantra, and he’s got the tattoos to prove it.

At 30, Nuevo is a little older than most of Sacramento’s up-and-coming rappers— particularly considering he started just four years ago. A lot changed for Nuevo back then.

Beyond transforming his love for poetry and creative writing into raps and beats, it marked his return home to Roseville after stints in the San Francisco Bay Area and San Diego. It also marked his first return home to Manila—ever— since he moved to the United States at age 11.

“It changed my life,” he says. “I didn’t really know who I was until I was there.”

And he felt compelled to tell his story— what he calls the everyday underdog’s story— in rap form.

“I’m trying to find my identity,” Nuevo says.

“Trying to make as many mistakes as I can so I can better myself and the legacy I leave behind, whether that be through kids or music.”

His latest collection of stories—told in poetic, soulful raps over mid-tempo, jazzy

beats—comprise The Born Experience. The 11-track mixtape—his second full-length rap album—is now available for free on iTunes, and notably features appearances from local emcees Rasar Thejeli (formerly Random Abiladeze), Bigga Bud and electro-soul singer Stevie Nader.

The album-release celebration takes place Saturday, January 17, at Pour House. Soon after, Nuevo flies out to Manila again, perhaps to return to Sacramento with another big surge of inspiration.

Unlike Nuevo’s debut ReBorn (and his previous all-instrumental releases) The Born Experience doesn’t use his original beats.

It’s still got that jazz-inflected, easy-listening sound—definitely not party music—but Nuevo wanted to focus on his words. He spent more than a year writing, in part because his songwriting process is so time-consuming. He doesn’t use pens or paper. Instead, he listens to beats in his car and freestyles over and over again until lines start to stick. It’s the ultimate filter. Plus, there’s no danger of ever sounding like you’re reading instead of rapping if there was never anything from which to read.

In any case, Nuevo seeks out more complex, emotional and truly personal thoughts in The Born Experience, delving into topics like young love, immigration, poverty and immortality. But some stories are just stories. After all, Nuevo considers himself a writer—a storyteller—first and foremost. His favorite track, “Alone in the Rain,” moves through vignettes following different homeless, lost individuals.

“It’s not my story but it’s rooted from the same struggle,” he says. “My family was always poor. Growing up, there were five of us and my parents had to work their butts off to get us here.

It’s the same story—it’s the underdog’s story.”

Carlo Nuevo, a.k.a. M. Born rapper Nuevo works full-time as a software programmer. Even if he’d rather dedicate himself fully to his craft, he can’t give up the career.

Not when his parents sacrificed so much. As the only person in his family to pursue any sort of creative endeavor, he already doesn’t fall in line with expectations.

“Make money, finish college, become a doctor—I’m not necessarily doing that,” he says.

“Success is subjective. I’m pretty successful in my own eyes and I think my parents are finally realizing that as well.”

As a Dirty Projectors fan, I longed to hear something gut-wrenchingly beautiful come out of Deradoorian’s mouth, akin to “Two Doves” from Bitte Orca. Her vocal talent is still extraordinary, but with her current style, she avoids using it so simply.

Deradoorian didn’t tell stories or address the crowd much at all, either.

Instead, it felt like we were sneaking in on band practice. We acknowledged the privilege and dared not interrupt. Though the man in awe next to me couldn’t help but exhale a “wow” and “cool” every so often.

Homecomings: Local bass and dubstep fans often reminisce about the good ol’ Grimey days. The twice-amonth Tuesday dance night started out in 2010, regularly drawing as many as 400 people out of hiding each edition.

It was the work of DJ Whores, a.k.a. Daniel Osterhoff. Grimey ultimately ended last February when Osterhoff moved to Denmark to be with his daughter. Osterhoff hasn’t deejayed since.

He’s back, ya’ll.

Well, at least for a couple of months. Osterhoff says he plans to perform “a couple guest spots here and there” while he’s enjoying the warm California weather.

The first appearance will be one of Requiem Events’ big Throwdown parties on Saturday, January 17. Local hip-hop artists will take the stage until about midnight, then the dancing will ensue with DJ Whores and Jurts until 3 a.m. Expect a mix of hip-hop, indie, dubstep, glitch, house, footwork and, of course, grime. It all goes down at Midtown Barfly (1119 21st Street) for $15 at the door.

Meanwhile, Old Ironsides (1901 10th Street) will host a slew of former Sacramentans on Friday, January 16.

Los Angeles-based indie rock band Two Sheds headlines the evening, and the husband-wife team of Caitlin and Johnny Gutenberger is also celebrating a very special anniversary. It’s their 10th year of making music together—and their first-ever show was at Old I. San Francisco bluesy rock act Lee Bob & The Truth—led by Lee Bob Watson, former local teacher, Americana troubadour and member of seminal rock band Jackpot—joins the bill along with Jackpot’s singersongwriter Rusty Miller for a truly special, nostalgic lineup. Show starts at 9 p.m. and costs a more than reasonable $7.

My friend’s eyes widened as soon as we stepped into the backyard.

“This is it,” he whispered. “This is Sacramento’s hipster nexus. This is our Williamsburg.”

Needless to say, we probably won’t be invited back if anyone reads this.

The scene began with Carson McWhirter, formerly of math rock band Hella and Nintendo Entertainment System cover band the Advantage, doing his experimental guitar looping thing. It ended with Pregnant, a.k.a. Daniel Trudeau’s Placerville-based project, doing experimental things as well.

In the middle, we had Deradoorian—the main draw, the royalty.

Full name: Angel Deradoorian, once one of the hypnotic, gorgeous voices behind hipster-beloved, experimental rock band Dirty Projectors. She lives in Los Angeles now, but is a Sacto native.

After leaving Dirty Projectors in 2012, she focused on her solo project—darker, droning—and joined Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks, the Animal Collective founder’s latest band. Deradoorian’s first and only solo album Mind Raft actually dropped back in 2009. According to Pitchfork, Deradoorian described it as “An EP with five gothed-out psych tracks for you to do drugs to, or something.”

Her newer stuff could be described the same way, but even more so. Mind Raft wears a quiet folk element that was absent from her live set Monday night. Still dark, more intricate and more firmly electronicbased. She’s currently writing her second album.

At this particular living room show, she played keys, bass guitar and a palette of pedals, while another woman hit two snare drums. Their harmonies acted as explorations— tribal calls over deep murmurs; echoey, airy vocals heightened to the near-operatic. Each song was slowly built using loops and multitasking.

At times, Deradoorian had one hand plucking strings, one hand on keys, her mouth on the mic and her foot ready to act.

From the streets of Santa Monica to platinum-selling pop star, Andy Grammer’s story is one that some performers dream of. But his success clearly comes POP from a deep knowledge of music and hours of work. His rise has been compared to John Mayer, one of his musical influences, but don’t think he sounds like Mayer. His sophomore release, Magazines or Novels, expands his signature pop-rocksoul blend with “Honey I’m Good,” a raucous, hootenanny song; the anthemic “Miss Me;” and a banjo-inflected “Back Home.”

Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub, 9 p.m., $10-$12

Most people think of blues-rock as a heavy, driving sound. While local duo Said the Shotgun certainly has its share of meaty riffs, it seems to marry a classic laid-back Delta Blues sound with a more psychedelic, atmospheric sound. There’s also a lot of twang and slide guitar, giving the songs more depth. The sound of the bayou isn’t far from them either—and there are even influences of the ’60s British rock bands like the Rolling Stones, the Animals and the Yardbirds. In other words, the music is dynamic, subtle BLUES-ROCK and passionate. Whitey Morgan’s papa was a reverse carpetbagger, leaving the South for Detroit, but kept his country culture alive in his son. Morgan’s beefy bellow recalls Waylon Jennings’ blustery baritone, traversing the dusty stretch through tearsin-the-beer honky-tonk to job-quitting country-rock HONKY-TONK odes, pedal-steel country ballads echoing George Jones to rabble-rousing beer-anthems worthy of David Allen Coe. Morgan’s group built a fanbase from the ground up—to the extent that it pledged $50,000 on Kickstarter in May to record a still-forthcoming third album, the follow-up to 2010’s self-titled album on Bloodshot Records. 2708 J Street, www.whiteymorgan.com.

Mondavi Center, 7 p.m., $13.50-$51 Brooklyn-based Gregory Porter has been the talk of nearly every jazz and R&B aficionado for years. After releasing his magnificent Liquid Spirit record in 2013 on Blue Note Records, Porter won the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Vocal Jazz Album without much surprise. Porter knows how to phrase and deliver some of the most thought-provoking pieces and should be both seen and heard to understand the depth of his insightful work. One listen to the sweetness of Porter’s own “Be Good (Lion’s Song)” or any of the songs on his previous album, Water, should be more R&B/JAZZ than enough reason for fans of wondrous, joyous jazz fare to attend. 9399 Old Davis Road in Davis, www.gregoryporter.com.

It benefits the family of Sacramento man Derrick Williams (pictured), who was in Oakland on New Year’s Day when he was shot to death at a gas station. No arrests have been made, and Williams leaves behind his partner and son. So far the lineup includes Mic Jordan, Hennessy, P.O.O.R., D Monsta and a special toHIP-HOP be-announced headliner.

Eric Bellinger’s grandfather, Bobby Day, was most known for singing the classic tune “Rockin’ Robin,” but he also had quite a successful career as a songwriter in R&B the ’60s and ’70s—most notably for the Jackson Five. Like his grandfather, Bellinger floated under the radar as a songwriter, penning tunes for Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson and Chris Brown. But he’s recently jumped into the spotlight and scored a few hits with smooth, emotive R&B songs like “I Don’t Want Her” and “Focused On You.” He’s still only 28, and could have a long career ahead of him. Fortunately, he hasn’t produced a song so big that it will overshadow his entire body of work.

The Portland Cello Project operates as a collective of rotating, classically trained cellists, but it plays a wide variety of styles: folk, indie rock, pop, metal, rock, jazz, hip-hop and more (think recording sessions with the Dandy Warhols and Trampled by Turtles, and covers of Taylor Swift and Kanye West). It’ll play dirty punkrock clubs and gorgeous concert halls—as a small four-piece or as full orchestra led by 12 cellists. And don’t expect INDIE to ever see the same show twice; the project definitely has more than 1,000 songs in its repertoire. The whole point? If you’ve never seen Jucifer before and would like your hearing to remain as it is, bring some earplugs. The band played the original Capitol Garage years ago and nearly blew the roof off the building— figuratively. Although Jucifer’s ROCK only a drum-and-guitar duo, make no mistake: This band can bring the noise. Gazelle Amber Valentine sings and plays guitar alongside drummer and husband Edgar Livengood. Expect the entire stage to be filled wall to wall with enough amplification to meet the needs of 20 festival bands. Besides, any band named after the combination of O.J. Simpson’s nickname (Juice) and Lucifer deserves attention.

This cycle may have occurred so often it became a habit, although painful one. Inconsistent affection is crazy-making for most of us. So is the kind of communication you describe. It becomes difficult to understand when a comment is a constructive insight and when it is simply a projection of the speaker’s insecurity.

Any adult friendship that is unequal deserves careful discernment. If the person is a mentor, for example, inequality is part of the equation. But among friends, equality is essential. Yes, we could complain about your friend’s attitude. We can also label it a way of avoiding emotional intimacy while pretending to be caring. But what really matters is solving the problem. How can you end this pattern of difficult female friendships?

Begin by removing any attitudes or behaviors within yourself that call forth an overbearing maternal energy from others. That’s right.

You have an opportunity to grow up and be equal to every person, situation, emotion and experience in your life.

As you heal, you may find that mothering yourself is more appealing than being mothered. That’s a sweet realization. A change in you also means you will attract fewer unhealthy relationships. Isn’t that good news? You will also be able to exit any problematic connections quickly and with more awareness. In the future when you feel gut-punched after talking with a female friend, write. Describe exactly what happened before the painful comment. Writing will help you figure out why your brain was unable to respond in the moment.

But don’t obsess about why you lacked a strong comeback. Just trust that you will handle situations compassionately in the future.

Why are we given the people we are given in our lives? This question really bothers me for reasons I don’t want to share because the people involved always read your column.

But I would appreciate an answer from you.

The people in our lives are present (or leave) so that we can learn to love and be loved. Real love is deep, wide and honest enough to call forth the best from us. This means love reveals aspects of us that we might prefer not to see or admit to.

Those insights are invitations to love ourselves enough to change.

Of course, there’s another level of response to your question, if you are ready. Here it is: The reason we are given the people we have in our lives is a mystery. Wrapping our minds around accepting the possibility of the unknown is a powerful spiritual exercise. Enjoy! Ω

Hi, Ngaio. Can you ask the people who smoke pot regularly to take a shower or hang an air freshener around their neck?

One of the downsides of the changing attitudes about pot is having to smell it daily, regardless of whether you want to or not. It may be the smell of freedom for some but it’s really not making any friends among those who are on the fence about weed’s acceptance.

Nor will I or anyone else. I suppose it’s possible that human beings will still be listening to Beethoven’s music or watching The Simpsons TV show 10,000 years from today, but even that stuff will probably be gone in five billion years, when the sun expands into its red giant phase. Having acknowledged that hard truth, I’m happy to announce that in the next five weeks you could begin work in earnest on a creation that will endure for a very long time.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): What

does your soul need on a regular basis?

The love and attention of some special person? The intoxication provided by a certain drink or drug? Stimulating social interaction with people you like? Music that drives you out of your mind in all the best ways? The English poet Gerard Manley Hopkins said that the rapture his soul needed more than anything else was inspiration—the “sweet fire,” he called it, “the strong spur, live and lancing like the blowpipe flame.” So the experience his soul craved didn’t come from an outside stimulus. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In 1987,

California condors were almost extinct.

Less than 30 of the birds remained. Then the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service launched an effort to capture them all and take emergency measures to save the species.

Almost 28 years later, there are more than 400 condors, half of them living in the wild. If you act now, Gemini, you could launch a comparable recovery program for a different resource that is becoming scarce in your world. Act with urgency, but also be prepared to practice patience.

Webster (1782-1852) was an American statesman who served in both houses of Congress. He dearly wanted to be President of the United States, but his political party never nominated him to run for that office. Both of those presidents, William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor, died after a short time on the job. Had Webster agreed to be their vice president, he would have taken their place and fulfilled his dream.

An outside investigator named Samantha Krueger discovers the diabolical contours of the project and decides to reveal the truth to the public. “We’re going full Snowden,” she tells a seemingly sympathetic conspiracy theorist. She’s invoking the name of Edward Snowden, the renegade computer administrator who in the real world leaked classified information that the U.S. government wanted to keep hidden. It might be time for you to go at least miniSnowden yourself, Scorpio—not by spilling state secrets, but rather by unmasking any surreptitious or deceptive behavior that’s happening in your sphere. Bring everything out into the open—gently if possible. But do whatever it takes.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

In 1939, author Ernest Vincent Wright finished Gadsby, a 50,000-word novel. It was unlike any book ever published because the letter “e” didn’t appear once in the text. Can you imagine the constraint he had to muster to accomplish such an odd feat? In accordance with the astrological omens, I invite you to summon an equally impressive expression of discipline and self-control, Sagittarius. But devote your efforts to accomplishing a more useful and interesting task, please. For example, you could excise one of your bad habits or avoid activities that waste your time or forbid yourself to indulge in fearful thoughts.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Most plants move upwards as they grow. Their seeds fall to the ground, are blown off by the wind or are carried away by pollinators. But the peanut plant has a different approach to reproduction. It burrows its seeds down into the soil. They ripen underground, where they are protected and more likely to get the moisture they need to germinate. The peanut plant’s approach to fertility might be a good metaphor for you Capricorns to adopt for your own use. It makes sense for you to safeguard the new possibilities you’re incubating. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): In his

poem “The Garden,” Jack Gilbert says, “We are like Marco Polo who came back / with jewels hidden in the seams of his ragged clothes.” Isn’t that true about you right now, Aquarius? If I were going to tell your recent history as a fairy tale, I’d highlight the contrast between your outer disorder and your inner riches. I’d also borrow another fragment from Gilbert’s poem and use it to describe your current emotional state: “a sweet sadness, a tough happiness.” So what comes next for you? Gridiron cop Joshua Langensiepen is about to join a very strange tradition.

The 25-year-old is in his first year with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, but that’s not the unique group we mean.

For four decades now, the Sacramento Pig Bowl has pitted local law enforcement officers against other public safety professionals in a some-holds-barred gridiron classic. Last year, the law enforcement “guns” edged the firefighting “hoses” in an epic contest that doubles as an annual fundraiser for various charities. Proceeds from the 41st Pig Bowl—and 12th straight matchup between cops and firefighters—will benefit chaplaincy programs, at-risk youth, burn victims, autism treatment and other worthy causes.

The game kicks off at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 24, inside of Sacramento State University’s vaunted Hornet Stadium, where Langensiepen’s father used to play in college. But that isn’t the only echo from the past.

Langensiepen’s dad, a former state corrections investigator, will be among the coaching “guns” on the sidelines shouting orders downfield.

Here, the 6-foot-1 inside-outside linebacker breaks from a Razorbacks huddle to discuss three-a-week practices and whether cops can really out-party firefighters.

As the ultimate rookie, what kind of hazing have you endured?

You know, all the normal stuff like being taped to the goal post. Just kidding. The guys have been really supportive of all the new players. I couldn’t ask for a better transition into things.

Tell me how you joined the team.

There wasn’t any rigorous try-out process, but they do expect you to show up in shape.

We hit the ground running the first day. I would say the biggest influence [for joining] was my dad. We had always joked about one day being one of the only father-son combinations playing in the game, but he opted to coach instead. I’m still waiting for him to show up on game day with his pads!

These guys had so many great stories that it motivated me to hopefully one day share in some of those same things.

This year, you law enforcement “hogs” are again playing firefighting “dogs.” Give me your best smack talk for the opposing team.

[Laughs] Best smack talk, eh? Well, if they say you’re only as good as your last game, look no further than last year’s score.

“Pig Bowl” sounds a little derogatory to me, but apparently “Pig” stands for “pride,” |

“integrity” and “guts.”

What does “Bowl” stand for?

I’m going to have to get back to you on that one. I’m stumped.

There’s been a lot of scrutiny on the badge this past year. What, if anything, do you think this game can do for relations between law enforcement and the community?

I believe this game provides an opportunity for the community and law enforcement to build rapport by utilizing a different setting and type of uniform. This game allows community members to see law enforcement officials in a different light.

Your dad played in a version of the Pig Bowl that the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation used to run. Does that add any extra pressure to the upcoming game?

Absolutely. Twenty years later, I can still recall that game. They called it the Bull Bowl and they played at Amador High School. I remember that it was packed, like two- or three thousand people on a chilly night. I was an honorary captain and during the coin toss at the 50-yard line and I turned to my dad and told him, “Wow, these guys are huge!”

How has the overall experience been leading up to the game?

I grew up watching this game and now I’ve been privileged enough to share in this experience with some great guys. There is so much history that I am still trying to learn. No matter what your rank or how many years you’ve been on with the department, when you hit that field none of it matters. So if you blast your sergeant or someone, you can smile, help them up and do it again. It’s the only place where that would fly.

As someone who played football competitively in high school and college, how have these practices compared with your league days?

They probably have to dial it down a little since we aren’t 16 anymore, but we still get after it! For me, the most grueling part isn’t the physicality of the game, but instead learning their style of defense. I have a pretty good football IQ, but every defense has its little twists. I’ve learned over my years of playing ball that no matter what type of athlete you are, you are useless if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Could this Razorbacks team take your high school varsity one?

I’ve heard stories of some great Razorback teams, but I would never bet against our Sheldon [High School] team.

It’s said that the parties surrounding these games get a little wild. Who parties harder— cops or firefighters?

Cops, hands down.
