Spy vs. spy The sirens started screaming shortly before midnight.

It sounded like an entire cavalcade of police cars, fire trucks and ambulances. Moments later, a helicopter started whirling. My husband grabbed his iPhone and pulled up a policescanner app as I checked Twitter and Facebook to see if any nearby friends had news. Nothing.

I then checked my email and found two messages from Nextdoor, a social-networking site that connects neighbors through online forums. While most of the messages I’d previously read on it were casual—requests for electrician referrals, lost-pet notices, etc.—there were also crime bulletins and updates from the Sacramento Police Department. I’d yet to post to the site myself, however; for reasons I couldn’t quite define, the network left me with a lingering sense of unease.

Now, as I scanned the emails— two users reported witnessing a car chase and stakeout just a few blocks away—I felt unsettled again. And not just because some major Cops-style action was happening within approximate shooting distance of my house.

All this watchfulness is a good thing, right? I had immediate access to information, after all. Then again, whether the reports were accurate remained to be seen, and as we double-checked the door locks, my concerns finally crystallized. All those posts warning users to beware of shady solicitors and other seemingly suspicious strangers? It’s clear we’re all peering out from behind our curtains, watching one other with obsessive, nosy care.

In an age when we’re rightfully concerned about public-safety cameras on street corners and the National Security Agency combing through our emails, let’s not forget just how much permission we’ve granted one another to observe and report.

Re “A low-down, dirty, shameful dozen”

by Sasha Abramsky (SN&R Feature Story, November 14): The food-stamps budget has increased 135 percent in the past five years. These “cuts” would change that to an increase of 125 percent from letter of five years ago. The the week financial aid one is hilarious, as well, given the government is on the hook for $1 trillion in loans with a 15 percent default rate.

You forgot the main way that Democrats are anti-female choice: higher marginal income-tax rates. If you are a dual-income couple, and you happen to make a moderately successful living in a high-cost state like California, one spouse’s marginal tax rate is very likely over 50 percent and could be as high as 63 percent. Why work when you almost two-thirds of your money goes to other people? Give women the choice and the chance to stay in the workforce by lowering tax rates.

Re “Strong mayor, weak priority” (SN&R Editorial, November 14): I am at a loss to understand what problems the strong-mayor proposal is supposed to address. Perhaps Mayor Kevin Johnson could outline what would have been done differently if the strong mayor had been in place for the last few years. While 60 percent of the 50 largest cities have a strong mayor, 40 percent don’t. Are these 40 percent less well-governed? The decision to keep the city council at eight members makes it possible for the council to deadlock, which further increases the power of the mayor. If a change is necessary, or even desirable, please let us know the reasons. We hope that they will be more substantial than “All the cool cities are doing it.”

SN&R spoke with the candidate to discuss what’s working and what needs to change when it comes to law and order in Sacramento.

The war on drugs has been a big issue lately. Did Attorney General Eric H. Holder’s statement about respecting states’ marijuana laws take you by surprise?

He issued a couple of announcements that surprised. The first was early on: He had made a statement about not wanting to pursue criminal actions against people who were complying with state [medicalmarijuana] law. There was an unintended consequence to that. ...

And then the second thing was recently when he went to the [American Bar Association], and without any warning, announced that he wanted to essentially loosen up some of the prosecutions of lower-level drug dealers who were facing statutory minimum sentences. Our response, immediately, was, “Wow, we didn’t see that was coming—and what does that mean?”

Basically, America’s drug policy has been to attack the supply side. But the demand hasn’t changed, so you reduce the supply but increase the price. More people get involved in illegal drugs, and it hasn’t been working—and yet we continue to keep doing it. Am I missing something here?

I think that’s a fairly accurate assessment of what the policy has been; it’s been a supply-side policy. We go after it. You can understand why, from a prosecutor’s perspective, that is where you do want to concentrate. You don’t want to pick on the people who are low level and using but create the demand for drugs.

But we’re putting tons of them in prison for low-level drug use.

Well, what you end up doing is they become essentially, because of their drug use, unemployable. Unemployed and unemployable. A lot of them get involved in low-level drugs sales and then get prosecuted for low-level drug sales and end up going to prison for low-level drug sales.

That what’s you see.

But then, when the Department of Justice changes the guidelines, there must be some awkward conversation.

“You would be OK, but I just happened to be arrested too early.”

Invariably, you have those conversations.

I had many of them with defense attorneys, where I would have to say, … “I’ll go with you, and we’ll go talk and we’ll see if this is gonna change anything.”

The U.S. attorney has limited resources. How did medical-marijuana prosecutions become a priority?

It’s a very interesting issue, because not every drug is the same. And from my view, meth and cocaine are poisons. Particularly with meth, you see what devastation it wreaks. …

When there was a change of policy on low-level marijuana, everyone thought that meant the feds aren’t going after marijuana.

People went into it, they were making lots of money—they were essentially selling marijuana as a commodity. Then, the federal government came in and said, “No, it’s not legal. California, you have not legalized recreational use. So, we’re going to come in and crack down on and shut STORY

down those avenues for selling marijuana,” and … it creates this black market of people who are growing in the national forest.

Recently, U.S. Attorney Ben Wagner released a press release about Angel Gonzalez, 36, who was going to serve seven years in prison for marijuana cultivation in the Sequoia National Forest. Do you actually think that putting Angel in jail is going to have any impact?

There will be another Angel.

And so, what are we doing? Isn’t this to just keep doing the same thing of working on supply, impacting supply?

This clearly is not working.

You’re reading a press release that obviously is talking about someone who’s out in the national forest, growing marijuana on our land, on our public land. That’s something that politically looks good in a press release. You’re right, that’s why it’s made, because that’s our land, we’re supposed to be able to go out and hike and enjoy it without being threatened by someone who is trying to protect their marijuana crop.

There’s no political will to say let’s not do that. I understand that completely.

What you’re talking about is also sensible. … That is a major source of frustration for the line prosecutors who do those kinds of cases. You’re right. I think that’s why it’s important, when you have someone who leads an office, that they know what it’s like to be on the line and they know this is what it’s like be a prosecutor. The case that you just showed me, the press release, is a great example of that. There were many

of my colleagues who could not stand to doing those cases, those Forest Service cases, for that reason, because they felt that there was going to be another one right down the road.

If you were talking to a marijuana collective and they came to you and said, “We got your guidelines, we’re in compliance with all of these guidelines: Can I be assured that I won’t be prosecuted?”

I’d tell them no. I’d tell them that you’re still likely to get prosecuted for the reason that I told you earlier. I’d say, “Look, California has not adopted a broad change in its law the way that Colorado and Washington have, and so you still risk potentially being prosecuted by state authorities.”

How do you think things will play out?

My guess for the future? I think there is going to be pressure on the various U.S. attorneys throughout the country to comply with what Washington has announced. That people will come into line, and there will be this expectation that if you’re complying with the policy as announced that there will not be prosecutions.

As district attorney, what would be your policy for medical marijuana?

Medical marijuana is the law. … I find the medical-marijuana laws to be quite

Police academy ’13 After years of budget cuts, Sacramento’s again training new law-enforcement officers It’s an accepted maxim in law enforcement that young cops are more likely to mess up, and there’s data to back that: During the recession, citizen complaints against local law-enforcement by Raheem agencies dropped, in part because departments froze their F. Hosseini academies and laid off the most recent hires.

But with the economy slowly perking back up, ra h e emh @ Measure U monies propping up public-safety budgets and ne w s re v ie w.c o m droves of veterans set to retire, cop school is officially back in session.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department is back up to three full training academies this year, for the first time since 2009, and has added 49 new deputies to its rolls.

With two more sheriff’s academies taking place this year, a new generation is being groomed to enforce law and order for decades to come.

“It’s so exciting to be getting back to the threeacademies-a-year that the sheriff’s department used to host,” said Sgt. Lisa R. Bowman, a department spokeswoman and one of the academy’s instructors.

(The police department runs two academies a year, said Officer Michele Gigante, and trained cadets from outside agencies during the downturn.)

On November 8, 38 stone-faced sheriff’s recruits filed down the center aisle at Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church in stiff formation, swiveling hard rights atop the burnt-sienna stage. They were whooped and hollered at by hundreds of family and friends who crowded the main hall and most of the second-story balcony.

A quick-changing soundtrack that hopped from Kanye West’s “Stronger” to the Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up” introduced the class, made up of eight military veterans, four women, young parents, and the siblings and scions of local law enforcement. That last category included a 20-year-old man with one brother already on the force and another in the academy behind him. And Dave DeRouen, who lost his father in 2008 to injuries sustained on the job 22 years prior, whose grandfather, another law-enforcement veteran, pinned his badge on him.

The class began its 26-week academy on May 14 with 64 recruits. The curriculum, which mixed classroom sessions and intense field training (cadets had Tasers, pepper spray and tear gas used on them and were ambushed by instructors) whittled that number considerably.

In his address, Sheriff Scott Jones said the job would only get tougher. “You will get punched and spit on,” he said. “You will have the greatest stories to tell.”

While 24 cadets dressed in sheriff’s black to signify they’d been hired as on-call deputies to staff the jails, more than a dozen wore gray. These cadets graduated, but weren’t yet employed by an agency. This group included honorees for most outstanding recruit, most inspirational and highest score on the emergency-vehicle operations course.

Keynote speaker John Pezone, a veteran deputy district attorney, tried to draw chuckles with anecdotes about spiders in the bathroom and unshaved necks.

Jones struck a more thoughtful tone. Underscoring the learning curve young deputies endure and the toll the job takes, he advocated introspection, self-criticism and doubt.

“Don’t ever tarnish that badge, because it’s not just your badge you’re tarnishing,” he said. Ω

confusing, and I’m sure that anyone who tries to comply with them does. If you are in compliance with medical-marijuana laws, there will be no prosecution. That’s a judgment that has been made, and there’s no reason to prosecute medical-marijuana users for complying with the law. Now, there are significant gray areas, and I think the DA needs to be an advocate for trying to get clarity.

We’ve had a very conservative district attorney, Jan Scully, who’s been strident in terms of locking people up and not focused on alternatives to incarceration.

What is your approach to some of these issues?

That’s the crux of why I’m getting into the race. We are now in a position that what’s been happening for the last 20 years is unsustainable. You can’t do it anymore. You’ve gotta change the policies.

What do you stand for as a DA candidate?

The crystallized message is that we have to increase public safety, recognizing that we have less resources to do it. The way to do that is every member of the district attorney’s office ... has to be taught repeatedly—and the lesson has to BEFORE

be reinforced—that we are trying to exercise our judgment to identify … the worst bad actors who we need to protect our community [against] by putting them away.

As for other individuals on the lower levels, we now can’t afford to incarcerate them the way we used to.

We’ve got to come with alternatives. … I think that’s the path forward.

That’s how we increase public safety.

Because we still have the same essential district-attorney policy. …

I’m going to take some of that money and try and come up with some type of program and use it as an alternative to incarceration, again, at the lower levels.

Are there other key issues and changes that you think we should make at the district attorney’s office?

I know the U.S. attorney’s office quite well. I know who is over there and who is good and ambitious and would be willing to take on things in the area of white-collar crime. … They have more resources and better ability to prosecute than we do. Once the budget situation improves over there, I expect they will be anxious and hungry for cases.

I think there are the cases here in Sacramento, where you get a person who is embezzling from a business here, which wouldn’t go to the U.S. attorney. My sense is that those cases are complicated; they’re much more difficult.

They’re the “good luck on your civil trial, we wish you the best of luck” cases.

They get prosecuted. But they don’t get prosecuted to the same extent, but you have to set priorities. And you’re right. I’m going to tell you that if I’m setting priorities and I’m looking as alarmed as I am by somebody that is embezzling business funds, I don’t consider it the same as someone who is victimizing a child or shooting someone in our community. Those are the people that I think need to be the top priority of the DA’s office.

You need to talk about people who are actually victimizing and hurting people and kids. That’d be the first level of priority.

But we also had a DA that prosecuted people for doing needle exchanges. Embezzlement or needle exchanges—help me here ...

That’s what I’m talking about. That’s why this race is so important, because you have alternatives to these policies that have been long-standing policies, and I don’t think people really realize the implications. Ω

Three hastily scribbled checks totaling $20,000 will prop open a critical drop-in center for homeless youth that was set to close this week. But Sacramento’s Wind Youth Services isn’t out of the woods yet.

The center in north Sacramento draws visits from up to 65 homeless youth a day in need of hot meals, showers, laundry facilities or donated clothes. It also develops individual case plans for young people to get them into services and off the streets, and is the only place of its kind in the Sacramento region.

In response to SN&R’s reporting into Wind’s predicament, supporters flooded the organization’s board of directors with appeals to keep the center open. On November 13, help materialized in the form of a $10,000 donation from The McClatchy Company Foundation, and two $5,000 donations from Folsom State Prison and Bank of America.

Wind executive director Sher Barber said she’s also drafting a targeted, end-of-year appeal to donors. “Instead of being general, we’re being very direct,” she told SN&R. How far the money will go remains uncertain. Barber anticipated applying for a grant through Sacramento Steps Forward, a conduit for federal-housing monies, but the organization is experiencing its own cash-flow problems and has laid off staff.

This comes as news trickles out about Wind’s mounting financial troubles. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Administration for Children & Families decided not to renew a three-year $540,000 “center grant” that paid for the drop-in center. Less calamitous, but still troublesome, Sacramento Employment and Training Agency staff recommended denying a $30,625 family self-sufficiency funding request after steering $38,000 to the nonprofit for that purpose last year.

Wind relied on both pots of money “for several years,” Barber said. “We’re going to come up with some other options.”

In its November 14 funding recommendations, SETA explains it’s because Wind doesn’t plan on using the money for shelter or case management this time around, as it has in previous years. Instead, Wind proposes investing in its crisis hotline, counseling and family-reunification efforts, “and apparently, that wasn’t popular,” Barber said.

SETA did, however, recommend approving Wind’s request for $20,381 in safety-net services.

Taking the bait bike Since rolling out its bait-bike program this past September, the Sacramento Police Department has been converting its roving decoy bicycle into arrests.

This month alone, police have recorded five bait-bikerelated busts, all in the central area of the city. The latest occurred Sunday afternoon in a residential neighborhood near 53rd Street and Austin Way, when police say 44-year-old Fred Morales activated the bait bike’s sensor and was later found riding the stolen property.

A night earlier, police tracked its sensor to 21st and U streets, where they stopped and cuffed Joseph Palaca, 38.

On Tuesday, November 12, officers arrested someone for stealing equipment from a bait bicycle perched in the 3200 block of Fifth Avenue, ironically near the McGeorge School of Law. This was also the site of a nighttime November 6 theft that resulted in the arrest of 31-year-old Robert Gordon.

Each one was charged with possessing stolen property or other theft-related charges. (RFH)

What Sacramento needs is more housing.

How will we know when we’ve fixed downtown Sacramento? What does a revitalized urban core look like, and how should we measure our progress? Sacramento historian William Burg suggests a goal that is both rational and ambitious: 58,000.

That’s about how many people lived in Sacramento’s central city—the “grid” area bounded by the downtown rail yards, the vin ar G Sacramento River, Alhambra Boulevard o sm

by Co and Broadway—in the year 1950. As of cosmog@ newsrev iew.c om the 2010 U.S. Census, only 30,000 people lived in those same neighborhoods.

The grid was depopulated when the federal highways came in, of course, and when the West End neighborhood was demolished to make way for the sterile Capitol Mall district. The West End was considered “urban blight” by city planners. Burg has written about it as a mixed-use, mixed-race neighborhood, center of the city’s jazz scene, and a place where segregation broke down at least a little bit.

His most recent book (one of many he’s penned on local history) is Sacramento Renaissance: Art, Music and Activism in California’s Capital City, and it tells the story of the artists and rabble-rousers who came up in the wake of redevelopment.

While redevelopment was pushing people out, new suburbs also tugged residents to the city’s edge. This wasn’t just a drain on downtown. According to Census data, even Sacramento’s first burbs, places like Land Park, Oak Park, Tahoe Park and East Sacramento, have fewer people living in them than they did 60 years ago. That’s partly because of highways, partly because policy at every level favors sprawl and decentralization.

By 1970, the number of people living in the downtown census tracts had dipped to just 27,000 people. They’ve recovered slightly from their lowest point, but even during the 1990s and 2000s, through the Midtown renaissance and Sacramento’s “smart growth” years, the overall central-city population kept backsliding.

A while ago, Bites noticed Burg was using #58000 as a hashtag when discussing urban development online. He suggests we make an explicit goal of restoring downtown to its historic high population. “The 58,000 idea captures both what we lost the last time we made such a dramatic change to the city and a goal to strive toward,” he explains.

He’s on to something. We spend an awful lot of time fretting about being a world-class city. We want to revitalize our downtown, and will spend hundreds of millions of dollars to do it. But what do “world class” and “revitalize” mean? What is the goal? We’ve chased every trend, boxy shopping centers, pedestrian malls, Hard Rock cafes, mermaid bars and now basketball arenas. None of those brought people back to live in the urban core.

“There are always a million excuses why housing doesn’t work for this project or that, why we can’t save this building, why affordable housing won’t pencil,” says Burg of the city’s apparent aversion to putting housing front and center in its redevelopment strategy. Sure, there’s been some, but the numbers tell the tale.

“Worst of all, they assume that the free market will take care of housing—the most important part. But the marketing and promotion part— the visitor attraction—gets careful planning and extensive subsidy.”

The economist Edward Glaeser calls cities “our species’ greatest invention.” In his book Triumph of the City, he makes the case that it is the urban density of people—not a collection of stuff like monorails and arenas—that drives innovation and economic development. He argues that cities should build up, allow for dense neighborhoods where creative people can mix it up and stop subsidizing sprawl. He’s somewhat critical of the historic preservation movement, something he and Burg would likely disagree on. Then again, Burg believes Sacramento “could double the population of downtown without demolishing a thing,” through reuse and infill development.

We’ve chased every trend, boxy shopping centers, pedestrian malls, Hard Rock cafes, mermaid bars and now basketball arenas. None of those brought people back to live in the urban core.

What if we worried less about the flashy mega-projects—which for some reason keep failing—and focused our attention (and limited funds) on building human-scale neighborhoods, with housing and shops, bars and restaurants, where people could live and work and play?

Doesn’t mean we couldn’t spend a bunch of money on a basketball arena, assuming the economic benefits really penciled out. But projects like that would need to serve an overall strategy, a vision of an urban place, filled with new residents living their lives, not just a collection of stuff that we hope will attract visitors for a while. The 58,000 would be the first priority, and the guiding principle.

That would be a big change, and an important accomplishment in terms of supporting transit, a “revitalized” downtown, and reduced greenhouse-gas pollution. But it’s something we can get our heads around. After all, we’re talking about the residential density of Sacramento in the Eisenhower years. Not Blade Runner’s Los Angeles. Forget the world-class city stuff.

Let’s shoot for 58,000 and see what happens. Ω

But as Project Censored posits, the failure of our media was not in the lack of coverage of Manning, but in its focus.

Though The New York Times partnered with WikiLeaks to release stories based on the documents, many published in 2010 through 2011, news from the leaks have since slowed to a trickle—a waste of more than 700,000 pieces of classified intelligence giving unparalleled ground-level views of America’s costly wars.

The media quickly took a scathing indictment of U.S. military policy and spun it into a story about Manning’s politics and patriotism. As Rolling Stone pointed out, Manning initially took the trove of leaks to The Washington Post and The New York Times, only to be turned away.

Alexa O’Brien, a former Occupy activist, scooped most of the media by actually attending Manning’s trial. She produced tens of thousands of words in transcriptions of the court hearings, one of the only reporters on the beat.

his year’s annual Project Censored list of the most underreported news stories includes the widening wealth gap, the trial of Pfc. Chelsea E. (formerly) Bradley Manning for leaking classified documents, and President Barack Obama’s war on whistleblowers—all stories that actually received considerable news coverage.

So, how exactly were they “censored,” and what does that say of this venerable mediawatchdog project?

Project Censored isn’t only about stories that were deliberately buried or ignored. It’s about stories the media has covered poorly, through a sort of false objectivity that skews the truth. Journalists do cry out against injustice, on occasion, but they don’t always do it well.

That’s why Project Censored was started back in 1976: to highlight stories the traditional media missed. Although the project initially started near Sacramento at Sonoma State University, now academics and students from 18 universities and community colleges across

the country pore through hundreds of submissions of overlooked and underreported stories annually. A panel of academics and journalists then picks the top 25 stories and curates them into themed clusters. This year’s book, Censored 2014: Fearless Speech in Fearful Times, hit bookstores last month.

The media mangling of Manning is No. 1 on this year’s Project Censored list, but the shallow coverage this story received is not unique.

The news media is in a crisis, particularly in the United States—and it’s getting worse.

The Project for Excellence in Journalism, which conducts an annual analysis of trends in news, found that as revenue in journalism declined, newsrooms have shed 30 percent of their staff in the last decade. In 2012, the number of reporters in this country dipped to its lowest level since 1978, with fewer than 40,000 nationally.

For American journalism to revive itself, it has to move beyond its corporate ties. It has to become a truly free press. It’s time to end the myth that corporate journalism is the only way for media to be objective, monolithic and correct.

The failures of that prescription are clear in Project Censored’s top 10 stories of the year:

1. Chelsea Manning and the failure of corporate media Untold stories of Iraqi civilian deaths by American soldiers, U.S. diplomats pushing aircraft sales on foreign royalty, uninvestigated abuse by Iraqi allies, the perils of the rise in private war contractors—this is what Manning exposed. They were stories that challenge the U.S. political elite, and they were only made possible by a sacrifice.

Manning got a 35-year prison sentence for the revelation of state secrets to WikiLeaks, a story told countless times in corporate media.

Global corporate fat cats hold $21 trillion to $32 trillion in offshore havens, money hidden from government taxation that would benefit people around the world, according to findings by James S. Henry, the former chief economist of the global management firm McKinsey & Company.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists obtained a leak in April, revealing how widespread the buy-in was to these tax havens. The findings were damning: Government officials in Canada, Russia, and other countries have embraced offshore accounts, the world’s top banks (including Deutsche Bank) have worked to maintain them, and the tax havens are used in Ponzi schemes.

Moving money offshore has implications that ripped through the world economy. Part of Greece’s economic collapse was due to these tax havens, ICIJ reporter Gerard Ryle told Brooke Gladstone on her radio show, On the Media.

“It’s because people don’t want to pay taxes,” he said. “You avoid taxes by going offshore and playing by different rules.”

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat, introduced legislation to combat the practice, the Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act, but so far, the bill has had little play in the media.

Researcher James Henry said the hidden wealth was a “huge black hole” in the world economy that has never been measured, which could generate income-tax revenues between $190 billion to $280 billion a year.

3. Trans-Pacific Partnership Take 600 corporate advisers, mix in officials from 11 international governments, let it bake for about two years, and out pops international partnerships that threaten to cripple progressive movements worldwide.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a trade agreement, but leaked texts show it may allow foreign investors to use “investor-state” tribunals to extract extravagant extra damages for “expected future profits,” according to the Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch.

The trade watch group investigated the TPP and is the main advocate in opposition of its policies. The AFL-CIO, Sierra Club and other organizations have also had growing concerns about the level of access granted to corporations in these agreements.

With extra powers granted to foreign firms, the possibility that companies would continue moving offshore could grow. But even with the risks of outsized corporate influence, the United States has a strong interest in the TPP in order to maintain trade agreements with Asia.

The balancing act between corporate and public interests is at stake, but until the country releases more documents from negotiations, the American people will remain in the dark.

All had ties to the state department, FBI, CIA or NSA, and all of them leaked to journalists.

“Neither party is raising hell over this. This is the sort of story that sort of slips through the cracks,” says Robert W. McChesney, an author, longtime media-reform advocate, professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and host of Media Matters from 2002-2012.

And when the politicians don’t raise a fuss, neither does the media.

ProPublica covered the issue, constructing timelines and mapping out the various arrests and indictments. But where Project Censored points out the lack of coverage is in Obama’s hypocrisy—only a year before, he signed the Whistleblower Protection Act. Later on, he said he wouldn’t follow every letter of the law in the bill he had only just signed.

“Certain provisions in the Act threaten to interfere with my constitutional duty to supervise the executive branch,” Obama said.

5. Hate and anti-government groups on rise across country Hate groups in the United States are on the rise, according to a report by the Southern Poverty Law Center. There are 1,007 known hate groups operating across the country, it wrote, including neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klan, white nationalists, neo-Confederates, racist skinheads, black separatists, border vigilantes and others.

Since 2000, those groups have grown by more than half, and there was a “powerful resurgence” of patriot groups, the likes of which were involved in the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Worst of all, the huge growth in armed militias seems to have conspicuous timing with Obama’s election.

inaccessible to hundreds of millions of the world’s poorest.

This is not journalism in the classic sense, according to On the Media’s Gladstone, who is also the writer of the graphic-novel-cumnews-media critique, The Influencing Machine.

In traditional journalism, as it’s played out since the early 20th century, news requires an element of something new in order to garner reporting—not a looming threat or danger.

So, in this case, what Project Censored identified was the need for a new kind of journalism, what it calls “solutions journalism.”

“Solutions journalism,” Sarah van Gelder wrote in the foreword to Censored 2014, “must investigate not only the individual innovations, but also the larger pattern of change—the emerging ethics, institutions, and ways of life that are coming into existence.”

wasn’t reported by some kooky socialist group, but by Bloomberg News. But few journalists are asking the important question: Why? Project Censored points to journalist George Monbiot, who highlights a reduction of taxes and tax enforcement, the privatization of public assets, and the weakening of labor unions.

His conclusions are backed up by the United Nations’ Trade and Development Report from 2012, which noted how the trend hurts everyone: “Recent empirical and analytical work reviewed here mostly shows a negative correlation between inequality and growth.”

7. Merchant of death and nuclear weapons The report highlighted by Project Censored on the threat of nuclear war is an example not of censorship, strictly, but a desire for media reform.

Project Censored highlighted a study from the Physicians for Social Responsibility that said 1 billion people could starve in the decade after a nuclear detonation. Corn production in the United States would decline by an average of 10 percent for an entire decade, and food prices would make food

8. Bank interests inflate global prices by 35 to 40 percent Does 35 percent of everything bought in the United States go to interest? Professor Margrit Kennedy of the University of Hanover thinks so, and she says it’s a major funnel of money from the 99 percent to the rich.

In her 2012 book, Occupy Money, Kennedy wrote that tradespeople, suppliers, wholesalers and retailers along the chain of production rely on credit. Her figures were initially drawn from the German economy, but Ellen Brown of the Web of Debt and Global Research said she found similar patterns in the United States.

This “hidden interest” has sapped the growth of other industries, she said, lining the pockets of the financial sector.

So, if interest is stagnating so many industries, why would journalists avoid the topic?

Few economists have echoed her views, and few experts emerged to back up her assertions. Notably, she’s a professor in an architectural school, with no formal credentials in economics.

Without people in power pushing the topic, McChesney said that a mainstream journalist would be seen as going out on a limb.

“The reporters raise an issue the elites are not raising themselves, then you’re ideological, have an ax to grind, sort of a hack,” he said. “It makes journalism worthless on pretty important issues.”

9. Icelanders vote to include commons in their constitution In 2012, Icelandic citizens voted in referendum to change the country’s 1944 constitution.

When asked, “In the new Constitution, do you want natural resources that are not privately owned to be declared national property?” its citizens voted 82 percent in favor.

Project Censored says this is important for us to know, but in the end, U.S. journalism is notably American-centric. Even the Nieman Watchdog, a foundation for journalism at Harvard University, issued a report in 2011 citing the lack of reporting on a war the United States funneled more than $4 trillion into over the past decade, not to mention the cost in human lives.

If we don’t pay attention to our own wars, why exactly does Project Censored think we’d pay attention to Iceland?

“The constitutional reforms are a direct response to the nation’s 2008 financial crash,” Project Censored wrote, “when Iceland’s unregulated banks borrowed more than the country’s gross domestic product from international wholesale money markets.”

Solutions-based journalism rears its head again, and the idea is that America has much to learn from Iceland, but even Gladstone was dubious.

“Iceland is being undercovered, goddamn it! Where is our Iceland news?” she joked with us. “Certainly, I agree with some of this list, Bradley Manning was covered badly; I was sad the tax-haven story didn’t get more coverage.

But when has anyone cared about Iceland?”

10. A ‘culture of cruelty’ along Mexico–U.S. border The plight of Mexican-border crossings usually involves three types of stories in U.S. press: deaths in the stretch of desert beyond the border, the horrors of drug cartels and heroic journeys of border crossings by sympathetic workers. But a report released a year ago by the organization No More Deaths snags the 10th spot for overlooked stories in Project Censored.

The report asserts that people arrested by U.S. Border Patrol while crossing were denied water and told to let their sick die. No More Deaths conducted more than 12,000 interviews to form the basis of its study in three Mexican cities: Naco, Nogales and Agua Prieta. The report cites grossly ineffective oversight from the Department of Homeland Security.

The American Civil Liberties Union lobbied the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to call international attention to the plight of these border crossers at the hands of U.S. law enforcement.

If ever an issue flew under the radar, this is it. Ω

Today, the mall-arts scene is kind of the only The city and arena developers say yes. Chris Jarosz, who co-owns the new Wicked ’Wich restaurant in the mall’s food court and is an advocate for the arts, says the new arena will need Sacramento creatives if it wants to succeed. “The arts community, specifically, is very active in driving activity downtown, so I think that’s going be a necessary component to making it successful.”

Leon Willis, a screenprinter and artist who collaborates with Exhibit S, told SN&R that he would like to see the city “create some sort of educational space inside the mall for the arts.” Like a college, an idea Mayor Kevin Johnson has been fond of over the years.

SN&R asked JMA Ventures about what’s next, but the company’s policy is not to discuss future plans with media at this time. All that’s known is the moving date sometime around next April.

Which raises the question: What happens to the actual pieces of public art at the mall, some of which have been there for decades?

From afar, the artwork on Downtown Plaza’s walls along Fifth Street resembles monochromatic, uninspiring wood carvings. Up close, though, you’ll notice that the reliefs are actually unique ceramic works. And you’ll also notice that people use the art as a trash can, shoving napkins and even soda cups into the sculpture.

O n a recent afternoon at the Sacramento Downtown Plaza, the sound of heels clicking on pavement and voices echoing against high walls make it seem like the handful of people wandering through the open-air mall’s few remaining shops comprise a far bigger crowd than what it actually is.

In short, it’s a virtual ghost town around here.

Past the tumbleweeds, however, there’s a mirage shimmering where a young group of artists have claimed an empty Hyundai dealership and transformed it into an art gallery and studio.

This is Exhibit S, the brainchild of business manager Tre Borden and local artist Danny Scheible. The pair, along with several resident artists, have devised the space as a means to bring culture downtown, revitalize the mall’s energy and blow away ghosts of its troubled past.

Too bad its own future may soon be one for the dusty history books. Construction for a sports and entertainment arena—the new home for the Sacramento Kings—is slated to begin next spring, threatening to displace many of the mall’s current occupants, including Exhibit S. But Borden’s not thinking about it. Well, not too much, anyway. There are day-to-day details to worry over, after all, including the launch 22 | SN&R | 11.21.13

Right now, for these kids on the mall, it’s still just art for art’s sake.

And the space is awesome. Floor-to-ceiling windows, originally designed to showcase cars, now frame Scheible’s “Tapigami” pieces—a vast miniature city constructed from tape that

Erika “Lady Beaver” Lipkes artist, Exhibit S “We have one of the nicest spaces in Sacramento,” says Exhibit S resident Maren Conrad, whose cheeky works depicting the wives, girlfriends and lovers of California governors past and present were famously pulled from a Sacramento restaurant this summer after an influential patron complained the pieces were inappropriate.

Borden echoes Conrad’s point. Where many people can’t see past the mall’s many shuttered shops, he says, his crew recognized opportunity.

“You have this run-down mall that everyone thinks is closed or ghetto, but because of that, [we also] have this awesome space,” Borden says.

sprawls out across the studio’s floor. At any given time, passersby can wander by and watch Scheible working, his tall frame hunched over a table, while his nimble fingers fashion Seussical towers, whimsical flowers and alien creatures out of the sticky material.

“People who leave Forever 21 [walk by] and are like, ‘What the hell is this?’” says Borden of the scene.

And that was, at least in part, the appeal for Borden and Scheible, who saw a chance to expose people to art as they shuttled between Macy’s and Panda Express, Claire’s and Hot Dog on a Stick.

“We wanted to bring art and culture [here],” Borden says. “Every type of person is [at the mall].”

In addition to Scheible’s work, the art here is bold, colorful and provocative, and walking through the collective’s automatic glass doors makes for an experience akin to what Alice must have experienced falling down that rabbit hole. There’s Erika “Lady Beaver” Lipkes, often found here at odd hours making prints of stripper kangaroos (yes, you read that right). There’s also Matt Brown’s space, filled with tech gear for his digital-imaging work, and, further back behind closed doors, there’s the nook where the artist known as The Believest makes promotional videos and works on graphic design.

And then there’s Conrad—the first person Scheible and Borden approached to join Exhibit S. Stationed behind a large table, Conrad spends hours here, pouring resin in layers to create large glossy images of koi fish, leaves and ladies in gardens.

Conrad says she likes the exposure brought about by the gallery’s odd location.

“We have people from all over come and say they have never seen this before,” she says of those who wander in, attracted to the offbeat offerings of Exhibit S. “Sacramento wants cool things in Sacramento.”

Scheible asked the plaza’s management to take a chance on upstart artists, and gave them a financial deal for use of the storefront. “[We] had the vision of having a place where a bunch of different artists came and worked together [to] create a platform of creative talent,” Borden says.

Now Exhibit S not only showcases art, it also houses a retail area where local vendors such as hip baby-clothes maker Ana Apple sell wares. There’s also a classroom space and events, such as the monthly beer-centric Kulture Keggers party.

If you want a place to pop, put a bunch of artists in there, says Borden.

Conrad sees the mix as a motivational force, artistically speaking.

“Having a resident videographer, a printmaker, digital imager, painter [and] a sculptor creates a dynamic tension.

And there isn’t competition,” she says. “We all try to make better art.”

Lipkes agrees. There’s something different about this hub, she says. And fact that it’s a mall—the very symbol of consumer culture—doesn’t bother her. Instead, she likes the idea that people who may not have ever visited an art gallery can walk in, curious about her work.

Still, she admits, being here is somewhat bittersweet.

“There’s this expiration date looming in the future, where the city is going to build this arena, and we only have so much time,” Lipkes says. “How much time do you put into promoting a space that’s temporary? That’s the constant in the back of all of our minds.”

Arena construction looming, the artists are working against the clock to vitalize a space despite its hazy future.

Exhibit S’ lease, signed before the arena’s location had been finalized, is only good through February 1, 2014, and the collective’s future remains fuzzy.

“We probably won’t be open very long,” Borden says.

“Hopefully, we can take what works in this space and move to a different location.”

Once construction begins, there’s a possibility of moving to a different location on K Street, or perhaps a few blocks over to R Street, Borden says. Until then, the goal is to lay the foundation of a new downtown.

“It’s the heart of our city,” says Borden. “It’s really important to associate downtown Sacramento with arts and culture. There is something happening [here] that isn’t happening anywhere else in the world.”

For now, the artists seem resigned yet determined.

“We are just making sure that we are documenting everything we have done here, just in terms of what is working well, what we would like to recreate,” Borden says.

“We are working 100-hour weeks, ... but we are able to do something culturally relevant and impactful,” he adds. “That’s really what I want the legacy of Exhibit S to be. If we close in [the spring] and go our separate ways, we have made a difference and shown what is possible.”

If the arena is built at the mall, what do you think the role of the arts should be in the revitalized downtown?

The arena, when it goes in, will be a highly prescribed environment.

It may be dynamic and exciting, it may have plenty of public art, it may have plenty of facilities to host art, but the hosting of that art won’t be organic from the community. It will be run like a business. Because it’s like any of the other entertainment and sports complexes, it is a private space. It can be run to appear like it is more public, but it will not be.

Well, I didn’t know that it’s being touted as that, but that’s sweet. I feel like it needs to expand more on that, because this is pretty amazing. … If you just give motivated people space to work in, it just goes to show that they don’t really need anything else other than just the space.

It should be big. Considering there’s going to be so much concrete going up, they should include a lot of art, or they’re going to be subject to vandalism. How much money would the city have to spend in removing vandalism?

If the arena is built at the mall, what do you think the role of the arts should be in the revitalized downtown?

What’s your craziest mall experience?

I hope they’ll realize that it can be more than just an arena and more of a cultural revitalization. People just end up leaving if they’re really good at being artists. They don’t stick around and make it better. I’ve been doing this a long time, and very rarely have I dealt with the city in like a superpositive enthusiastic manner when I’ve had really innovative ideas, but this is a step forward, for sure.

At Thursday Night Market: When I came to this town, that was still happening, and it was new to me to be able to see all of the people out, and the art and the musicians and everybody just vibing together on the street. The craziest thing that happened was when the SWAT team came and flushed everyone off the street. The event itself was really nice, and they shut it down—and they shut it down in a whole policestate manner. That part sucked.

What’s your craziest mall experience?

How much time do we have? Well, when I got [into Exhibit S], I had weird fans that followed me, and I remember one night, there was a girl who came in, and she was doing cartwheels in her underwear out on the floor, then her boyfriend ran up and was like, “Oh yeah, she’s really crazy.” Then, they left together. I’ve seen giant Samoan men crying outside at, like, 4 a.m. Just a lot of really weird, eerie stuff.

I’ve had this conversation with so many people, about how Sacramento is still trying to find its identity, what kind of city do we want it to be, and I think artists have a huge stake in making it interesting and not making it like San Francisco or Los Angeles, because we’ve had that hang-up for many years. And having this arena come in will kind of skew it more toward L.A., because L.A. has the Staples Center. If artists are involved, the local community leaders will make it more of a Sacramento-identified place. It will make it more integrated into the community.

What do you think about the Downtown Plaza mall as a new hub for Sacto arts?

I think it’s a really cool concept. I think, in general, downtown malls have suffered nationally. … There are a couple of cities, like L.A., where it seems to work, but in most cities, for whatever reason—either it’s traffic or parking—for a lot of them, all [mall] traffic as fallen off and [JMA Venture’s] approach here is doing something that’s more boutiquey and artistic; it’s a cool approach.

I was a skater in Sacramento in the ’80s, and I spent a lot of time on the K Street Mall before it was the K Street Mall. ... There was a big concrete fountain that ran down the middle of it, and we used to ride our skateboards, and, what was a fairly common occurrence, getting chased out of the mall by police. The mall had a lot more culture back then, it was actually a really exciting place, we had a really dynamic punk scene, and there were a bunch of clubs, and the Crest [Theatre] was also a big venue for shows, and so I’d spend all day hanging out in the mall. That’s about my mall experience, getting chased off the mall by police for skateboarding. Ω

If you could take over the mall and do any arts project, what would it be and why?

I would have a huge performance space. I think that would be a great addition to a mall, because I’m also a dancer, and so you have all of these talented people in the area and not enough venues—or not enough affordable venues—to perform in.

ove over, Apple Hill: The Mountain Mandarin Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. About an hour” northwest of the apple farms in Camino and Placerville is the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn, where the citrus-dedicated festival goes down this weekend. It basically has all the charm of Apple Hill, but with less of a traffic jam, and a decidedly more citrus flavor.

First, there’s the pastoral setting: the tree-dense foothills of Auburn with their fall-colored leaves. Then, there’s mandarin pizza, scones, syrups, sauces and other quirky mandarin-flavored food items. And, of course, produce: Thousands of pounds of mandarins grown on nearby ranches in Newcastle, Penryn and Loomis will be available for sale—with free samples to help compare the

taste of each grower’s goods. Rounding out the festival are family-friendly activities and entertainment including a 5k run, 250 craft vendors, a cooking competition, an eating contest and live music. Added bonus: The United States Department of Agriculture produced a study in 2008 that found a significant level of synephrine—a natural antihistamine that relieves symptoms of colds and allergies—in Placer County-grown mandarins.

The event begins on Friday, November 22, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, November 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, November 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gold Country Fairgrounds, located at 1273 High Street in Auburn.

In recent years, it’s surged in popularity to overshadow classic dips such as spinach and onion, thanks to its by Becky Grunewald healthy appeal. It hogs more and more space on supermarket shelves and comes in flavors as varied as cilantro, roasted red pepper and edamame.

But there is another, more humble dip that deserves our attention. A dip that’s not shouting from every corner of Trader Joe’s, but still entices with a subtle, smoky appeal: baba ghanoush.

Darna, a new Palestinian restaurant on the rating: K Street Mall, serves the best baba ghanoush HHH I’ve ever had. Rather than being blended into a smooth paste, this dip is chunky and studded dinner for one: with eggplant seeds, and the smoky, deep flavor $15 - $25 is balanced out by a lemony brightness. It’s good on the somewhat flabby pita bread with which it’s served, but it’s even better on the house-made za’atar bread. Za’atar is a Middle Eastern spice mix that contains thyme, oregano, marjoram and toasted sesame seeds. It thickly coats the warm flatbread, which is even more pizzalike covered in akkawi cheese. The cheese is browned and satisfyingly salty with the H squeaky texture of cheese curds. flawed These are the highs, but there are some HH middles and lows. haS momentS Darna occupies a very large space, which HHH makes the dining room feel empty even if there appealing are a few couples in the place. There are attracHHHH tive inlays on one wall that mimic stained-glass authoritative patterns, but there is also a huge flat-screen TV HHHHH in front of the buffet that, while we dined there, epic played CNN with the sound off.

Time and again I tried to concentrate on my food or conversation only to be distracted by the TV’s news-ticker text, which informed me that Toronto’s crack-smoking mayor was defiantly refusing to step down, or that a child had been found chained to a porch.

The lighting is also too bright, at least for dinner service, and on our first visit, our server appeared visibly nervous and even asked me if I Still hungry? knew what hummus was.

The falafel, on the other hand, would be unremarkable even with more filling—why is it so damned hard to get this seemingly simple dish right?

And how is the hummus? Quite good—the flavors of tahini, olive oil and lemon are all in balance with the earthy bean taste.

What was your reaction to what The Guardian calls “the biggest food fraud of the 21st century,” in which beef products were adulterated with horse meat in Europe?

The scandal involved “drug and horse smuggling.” Stateside, Congress voted to end the slaughter of horses in 2007, but the animals—including wild horses—were still being shipped to Mexico and Canada to be killed for diners overseas, including France. But now, slaughter’s back on the table. Grange Restaurant & Bar You won’t find any “challenging” dishes on this menu—just delicious local and seasonal food such as the Green Curry & Pumpkin Soup, which has a Southeast Asian flair. A spinach salad features ingredients that could be considered boring elsewhere: blue-cheese dressing, bacon, onion. But here, the sharply cheesy buttermilk dressing and the woodsy pine nuts make it a salad to remember. Grange’s brunch puts other local offerings to shame. The home fries are like marvelously crispy Spanish patatas bravas. A grilled-hamand-Gruyere sandwich is just buttery enough, and an eggwhite frittata is more than a bone thrown to the cholesterolchallenged; it’s a worthy dish in its own right. American.

Zia’s Delicatessen Zia’s Delicatessen isn’t really about trying every sandwich: It’s about finding your sandwich. In addition to a large selection of salumi, there’s the worthy eponymous offering, served with a wedge of zucchini frittata, a slice of

provolone, romaine lettuce, grainy tomato, and a simple dash of vinegar and oil that adds tang. Order it hot, so that the provolone melts into the bread. Also tasty: the hot meatball sub with small-grained, tender meatballs bathed in a thin, oregano-flecked tomato sauce that soaks into the bread.

A tuna sandwich is sturdy, if not exciting. It is just mayonnaisey enough, with tiny, diced bits of celery. A rosemary panino cotto with mozzarella could benefit from a more flavorful cheese. For a meatier option, try the Milano: mortadella, salami, Muenster; all three flavors in balance. Midtown Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co. The restaurant, by the same owners as Midtown’s The Golden Bear, sports a firefighting theme (a ladder on the ceiling duct work, shiny silver wallpaper with a rat-and-hydrant motif, et al) and a bar setup that encourages patrons to talk to each other. An interesting wine list includes entries from Spain and Israel; there are also draft cocktails and numerous beers on tap. The brunch menu is heavy on the eggs, prepared in lots of ways.

sandwich usually battered with egg. This one had a fried egg and béchamel, with a generous smear of mustard inside. The mountain of potato hash alongside tasted flavorful and not too greasy. The menu also features pizzas and house-made pastas, but one of its highlights includes an excellent smoked-eggplant baba ganoush, which is smoky and garlicky and served with warm flatbread wedges and oil-cured olives. The bananas foster bread pudding is equally transcendent, accompanied by very salty caramel gelato, pecans and slivers of brûléed bananas. American. 1630 S St., (916) 442-4885. LowBrau This place specializes in beer and bratwursts. Both are done smashingly. The sausage is wrapped in a tight, snappy skin like a gimp suit, which gets nicely charred by the chefs.

Within it lies a beguilingly spicy and juicy piece of meat. Get it with a pretzel roll for a truly exciting experience. There are vegan options, too: The Italian, an eggplant-based brat, has a surprisingly sausagelike texture that no self-respecting carnivore will turn down for lack of flavor. Toppings include sauerkraut, a “Bier Cheese” sauce and caramelized onions.

The idea behind Duck Fat Fries is a glorious one, yet somehow still falls short. You just expect something more when you see the words “duck fat.” The beer selection is epic. If you’re lost and confused, the staff will help guide you to the right

brew via questionings and encouraged tastings. German.

Starlite Lounge Kitsched up with midcentury modern details such as a giant metal starburst sculpture and a jukebox stocked with the likes of Frank Sinatra and Lady Gaga, the Starlite features food made by chefs from the Papa Dale’s Drivin’ Diner food truck. Almost everything here is either fried or accompanied by a creamy sauce, which makes for a heavy meal, but perfect bar food. Try the What a Pickle appetizer: crisply fried cornmeal-dusted pickle chips served with a garlic-dill dip.

The Tara-Dactyl Wings are three chicken drumsticks that have been slow-cooked and brick-seared. This translates to moist, flavorful meat, with not a hint of grease. There are also onion rings, two kinds of french fries and fried macand-cheese balls. Brave diners should order the Oh! That’s a Burger, a half-pound of juicy beef, served with cheddar cheese, thick-cut bacon, barbecue sauce and an onion ring.

Tank House BBQ and Bar The décor here is “suspenders and suede oxfords”—both homey and eclectic with old wood, new wood and wallpaper that

is to die for. A large patio is welcoming and allows diners to bathe in the haze from the drum smoker. You’ll leave perfumed in white-oak and almond-wood smoke; a good thing if your date digs the smell of meat and wood, bad if you have a meeting after lunch. Recommendations include the ribs, which are astounding in texture. The meat falls off the bone with confidence that your mouth will catch it. A lack of salt or spice on the ribs, however, robs them of the chance of being truly astonishing. (An easy fix.) The brisket is also fantastic—as tender as the first time you held hands with a high-school crush, with a sweet, smoky flavor that’s just as memorable. East Sac Istanbul Bistro Turkish chef Murat Bozkurt and brother Ekrem co-own this paean to their homeland, with Ekrem usually at the front of the house, infusing the space with cheer. Turkish cuisine features aspects of Greek, Moroccan and Middle Eastern flavors. The appetizer combo plate offers an impressive sampling. Acili ezme is a chopped, slightly spicy mixture of tomatoes, cucumber and walnuts that’s delicious paired

South Sac A&A Tasty Restaurant and Bar This Little Saigon eatery boasts such an extensive menu of Chinese and Vietnamese dishes that it’s hard to pinpoint its crown jewel. Notable options include a salty fish and chickenfried rice entree with stir-fried vegetables. The fried rice offers copious pieces of the diced salty fish. This may seem a bit weird to the uninitiated, but the reward is a unique, jolting pungent flavor that spruces up an otherwise boring chicken-fried rice. Elsewhere on the menu, the Vietnamese pork-chop rice plate, served with a small bowl of fish sauce, surprisingly stacks up to similar dishes from other strictly Vietnamese restaurants in the area. The pork is thinly sliced and tender, easily cut with a simple butter knife. A&A’s mash-up of hu tieu and huáng máo ji is unusual: The dish is commonplace, yet here it shines when set atop a steaming bowl of noodle soup. North Sac Asian Café Asian Café serves both Thai and Lao food, but go for the Lao specialties, which rely on flavoring staples such as fish sauce, lime juice, galangal and lemongrass, lots of herbs, and chilies. One of the most common dishes in Lao cuisine is larb, a dish of chopped meat laced with herbs, chilies and lime. At Asian Café, it adds optional offal add-ons—various organ meats, entrails, et al—to three versions of the dish: beef with tripe, chicken with gizzards, or pork with pork skin.

The beef salad offers a gentle respite from aggressive flavors, consisting of medium-thick chewy slices of eye of round with red bell pepper, chopped iceberg and hot raw jalapeño.

The single best dish here is the nam kao tod, a crispy entree with ground pork that’s baked on the bottom of the pan with rice, then stirred and fried up

to stick to the latter. Order the bibimbap with the brown rice—it imparts a delightful nutty flavor. The sliced mushrooms add to the umami of this dish, and the shoyu, mustard and spicy sauces that come on the side should all be used liberally. Meat is very easily avoided here: The restaurant emphasizes the healthful aspect of its dishes, and tofu can be substituted for any meat, as can vegetarian broth in most of the soups.

On the Japanese side of the menu, the ramen broth lacked a much-needed, salinated quality, the chashu lacked succulence and the hardboiled egg was served overcooked with an ugly green yolk. A steaming bowl of Japanese curry, however, boasted a comforting flavor, and, unusually, a bit of spice. Japanese and Korean.

themed gastropub offers an adequate beer selection and an extensive menu that goes beyond standard deep-fried pub fare. Try the Irish onion soup, a French onion-styled soup kicked up with Irish whiskey and Guinness beer. Or order the house-made veggie burger—it’s one of the tastiest black-bean patties around. The most unusual dish on the menu is the Scottish Mafia Pizza.

Topped with turkey pastrami, potatoes, cabbage and Swiss cheese, it falls short with its too many flat flavors to actually

with accompanying flatbread wedges. For entrees, try the borani, a lamb stew with garbanzos, carrots, potatoes and currants. The meat is very tender, while the veggies arrived nicely al dente. Also good is the chicken shish plate (souvlaki), which features two skewers of marinated grilled chicken that’s moist and succulent. Auburn Carpe Vino This quaint wine shop and restaurant boasts excellent service and food. Try the musque de Provence pumpkin soup—it’s lighter than your wallet will be when you leave, but one bite and wallet be damned. The flavor is exquisite with whispers of vanilla and pops of pumpkin seed. A cider-brined pork chop, bejeweled in bacon and prune and sitting atop a bed of savoy cabbage, defies expectations. A quartet of lamb meatballs corseted in harissa, mint sauce and yogurt is surely the dish to convert anyone who (confusedly) refuses lamb.

The eclectic dessert menu covers all the bases: fruit, cake, custard and chocolate.

A sour-cream apple cake is soft with crispy edges, but it’s the caramel-apple ice cream that takes it over the top. The restaurant—being primarily a wine bar—does not serve anyone under the age of 21. Those of a legal drinking age, rejoice, for there will be no parent cooing to a child to settle down.

Ramen update

Ramen & Rice and Hokkaido Noodle House both changed owners in the past few

months, and I’m still reeling. A few years back, Hokkaido (1724 Broadway) created a lovely Chinese-influenced mapo tofu ramen, and Ramen & Rice (807 Howe Avenue) counterbalanced that with its innovative Korean-influenced champong and bulgogi ramens. Ramen & Rice still offers the same menu, but lacks the warmth and nuance of former owners and operators Chuck and Lee Kim. Hokkaido, while still serving ramen, is now called Spice Kitchen, and has nixed mapo tofu in favor of some other noodle soups— including pho. I’ve yet to try it (I’m still mourning Hokkaido). Luckily, Shoki Ramen House (2675 24th Street and 1201 R Street) and RyuJin Ramen House (1831 S Street) are still going strong. In other ramen news, the Sacramentobased Sakura Gakuen Japanese Language School hosts its second annual Ramen Feast on Sunday, November 24, at 10:30 a.m., with ramen, baked goods, art and music. Starring Lori Petty, Naomi Watts, Malcolm McDowell and Ice-T, this Rachel Talalay-directed cult fave tells what happens after a meteorite smashes into Earth and bad guys start running the show. The film’s title character (Petty) is a “poster girl for the apocalypse”—a badass heroine who must face off against a gang of hybrid BLUE-RAY half-man, half-kangaroo creatures. The poor get poorer the ameriCan Way of Poverty Sacramento-based journalist Sasha Abramsky mixes data with personal stories, revealing that the most surprising thing about poverty in the United States is its amazing diversity. The American Way of Poverty: LOCAL BOOK How the Other Half Still Lives (Nation Books, $26.99) is divided into two sections, the first of which examines the lives and experiences of people who live in poverty, often invisibly. Abramsky includes interviews with people whose homes are underwater, nice cars have been repossessed, and the big question is where their next meal will come from. While intransigent poverty in slums, trailer parks and colonias still exists, the face of poverty is often now indistinguishable from the “middle class.” The second part of the book is devoted to suggestions for programs that could make a dent in America’s growing income inequality.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, which means there’s bountiful talk of food. But not everyone has the financial means to indulge, and, besides, most traditional holiday meals aren’t particularly FOOD healthy. Why not use this time to instead think about thrifty ways to eat well year-round?

The bloggers over at Plant Based on a Budget, a vegan recipe and lifestyle site founded by Sacramento resident Toni Okamoto, have devised a number of ways to eat healthier on the cheap.

The Plant Based on a Budget Challenge encompasses a collection of free meal plans to serve as a guide. Each plan approximately follows a weekly $25-per-person budget. Stock up on the recommended ingredients—dried legumes, fresh fruits and veggies, inexpensive pastas and grains, etc.—and then follow a set of simple recipes and meal suggestions. There are plans devised for various family sizes and time frames and all are adaptable.

Okamoto frames the project as something of an answer to the popular SNAP/Food Stamp Challenge, in which participants commit to spending only the equivalent of what a person or family of comparable size would receive via the federal government Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

“I think that ‘food stamp challenges’ ... are a little insensitive to folks who permanently have very little food money,” Okamoto explained in a blog post.

Rather, she said, think of this as a lifetime change. “How smart can we be with our money?” she asked. “How much better can we treat our bodies?”

Here on Earth, if you heal your fear of being alone, you will lose all sense of loneliness.

Finding joy in befriending yourself means you will make better choices in romantic relationships, too.

Our son will be celebrating his 17th birthday in December, and my husband wants to buy him an expensive sports car. I don’t agree. Teens, especially boys, drive recklessly, and a sports car will only encourage this dangerous behavior. I also think that a gift like this sends the wrong message to our son about material possessions. My husband (we were both married before and each have one child from our previous relationships; this son is ours together) is hurt and angry that I am not supporting him. Should I? Yes, but not by giving in on your core values. Support your husband by lovingly reminding him of the values your marriage and child-rearing are based upon. And consider this: Your husband may be having a midlife crisis. During midlife, the immature parts of our personality rise to the surface for maturation. People who lack self-awareness act on those impulses. Affairs with partners who are 20 years younger occur because we enter relationships with people who match our emotional age.

Extravagant purchases, like sports cars, suddenly seem sensible. Happily married adults frequently live out their midlife crisis through their children. Showy presents and permissiveness become the unfortunate norm. Don’t let that happen to your son. Stand your ground. Ω

Itamar Moses, not yet 25 when this—his first play—was published, might have bitten off more than he could chew in Outrage. It aspires to be by Jim Carnes nothing less than the history of knowledge.

A dramatization of his senior thesis, Outrage surely deserves an A for ambition.

And Big Idea Theatre deserves equally high marks for presenting this mesmerizing but messy essay about how we know what we know. Or don’t.

Narrated by Bertolt Brecht (Jouni Kirjola, both humorous and authoritarian), this Wind in the Willows-esque plot flits from ancient Athens to the Inquisition in Italy to Nazi Germany and to a galaxy far, far away (modern academia)—to prove that not a lot has changed in the world of teachers, preachers, mentors, martyrs and malcontents. The jumping-off plot involves the offer of a $40 million gift to a university and what restrictions might come with it if accepted.

The grant stipulates certain computer equipment, upgrades and usage, raising the question of whether computer technology aids or threatens human intelligence.

Jes Gonzales plays Lomax, a humanities professor who opposes accepting the grant; Ruby Sketchley is Dean Kale, Lomax’s former student, now risen above her mentor and eager to claim the very large donation; Ryan Snyder plays Daniel Rivnine, a new professor just learning the academic ropes; and Eason Donner is Steven, a hapless student who gets caught between dueling professors. Donner and Snyder exhibit easy chemistry in their student-mentor relationship, which echoes

Can the entire American history of race be boiled down to the story of two people? That’s the major effort undertaken in Mark Medoff’s Tommy J & Sally, in which a black man and a white woman dive into the delusions, mistrust, hope and good intentions that are wrapped around the way that race and class work in the United States.

In Celebration Arts’ fine production, T.J. (Thomas Jefferson)— played to edgy, intelligent perfection by Anthony Person—breaks into the New York City apartment of Sally Hemings (the fragile, angry Nicole DeCroix), a white pop singer, who may or may not be the woman he knew as Madeline Rosenberg in high school. He’s looking for closure; 10 years ago, her family took him in for his final year of high school.

He ended up in prison.

What follows is an intense roller-coaster ride through justified black rage and the racism of well-meaning white people. Person’s T.J. is loquacious, charming and threatening, by turns; most often, though, he’s simply wounded and desperate. As Sally, DeCroix has her own wounds to heal—and she’s not doing very well at it.

Che Guevara and the Dispossessed

Sacramento State University theater professor Roberto D. Pomo has written a multimedia biography of Ernesto “Che” Guevara, which features his mature self (Amir Sharafeh) narrating and commenting on the actions of his younger self (Russell S. Dow). There’s also Encanta (Jenna Cedusky), a ghostlike female presence to comment on his womanizing, which takes up almost as much of his attention as his politics. While intriguing, the focus is easily lost.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Who the hell is Katniss Everdeen?

Anyone who has read Suzanne Collins’ trilogy of dystopian best sellers can probably by Daniel Barnes provide a litany of adjectives to describe the story’s heroine. However, this uninitiated-tothe-novels critic is two plodding films into the cinematic saga of Katniss’ adventures in the fascistic future world of Panem, and the character still feels devoid of personality.

Early in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, one character says that all he knows about Katniss is she’s “stubborn and good with a bow.” It’s meant as a joke, but the description is startlingly spot-on and starts to hang ominously over the picture. This second installment takes 146 minutes to develop Katniss from a girl who is “stubborn and good with a bow” to a woman who is angry and good with a bow.

As the film opens, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) have returned home after surviving the Hunger Games, a televised spectacle in which young “tributes” from various “districts” fight to the death. The 12 districts are quite helpfully ranked in order of least to most wretched (Katniss and Peeta live in the thoroughly impoverished District 12), and all of them are ruthlessly ruled by a central state known as The Capitol, led by the vile President Snow.

Donald Sutherland plays Snow, and he slowly hisses every line and rattles a dainty little teacup so that everyone understands he’s supposed to be evil. Snow also talks openly about being evil, just in case anyone didn’t get it the first time with the dainty little teacup. On the off chance that any of the crushingly obvious themes about fascist states using media as a distraction aren’t crystal clear, Snow explains them in elementary and repetitive monologues on “fear” and “hope.”

It’s really not Sutherland’s fault that he gives such a broad, one-note performance. Jennifer Lawrence also can’t be blamed for failing to make Katniss a fully realized person, although her chilly inability to connect with co-stars is a problem. It’s safe to assume that Lawrence is just

too smart for this stuff, which results in an indifferent performance. Every actor in the film is constrained by the one-note characters, courtesy of a cluttered script credited to Simon Beaufoy and Michael deBruyn.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is a contender for the title of “greatest American actor,” and even he’s lifeless in the role of the gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee. Catching Fire makes a lot of fuss about the decadent lifestyle inside The Capitol, where citizens drink a champagnelike emetic so they can gorge endlessly, while people in the outer districts starve. It’s also pretty decadent to take an actor of Hoffman’s stature and restrict him to a purely expository role with no room to make it his own.

Catching Fire crams in a lot of plot and characters that are seemingly unnecessary to the film story, while simultaneously expanding on the saga’s overarching mythology. This is, presumably, a sop to fans clamoring for a more literal adaptation of Collins’ books. As a result, we learn more about Panem politics and less about the characters we’re supposed to care about.

Katniss and Peeta faked a romance to get out of the Hunger Games alive, and Snow forces them to perpetuate the ruse on State-enforced television and a public-relations tour. She still holds a torch for her childhood crush (Liam Hemsworth), but her love for Peeta becomes real as the story progresses, at which point Lawrence and Hutcherson’s lack of chemistry becomes especially off-putting.

It’s safe to assume that Jennifer Lawrence is just too smart for this stuff, which results in an indifferent performance.

As Katniss travels through the districts, she emerges as a “beacon of hope for the rebellion.”

That leads Snow to create a 75th anniversary, allstar version of the Hunger Games, with the intent of eliminating all past victors and effectively destroying hope forever. Donald Sutherland explains this confusing and needlessly complicated plan a lot better.

The violent and sometimes eerie unpredictability of the games makes for a decent third act.

Director Francis Lawrence has more competence with action and special effects than his Hunger Games predecessor Gary Ross. But without a strong investment in the characters, the PG-13 slaughter is just a bloodthirsty distraction from larger issues. As such, Catching Fire would probably play well in Panem. Ω

Director Steve McQueen and writer John Ridley tell the true story of Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free man of color in 1841 New York who was kidnapped into slavery, finally freed in 1853, and wrote a book about his years of bondage. Ridley and McQueen take only minor dramatic license with Northrup’s extraordinary narrative—such abductions were all too common in pre-Civil War America; what’s extraordinary is that Northrup got free again—and the movie is searing and indelible. Even the most despicable characters are given their full dimension with no trace of 21st-century hindsight. The movie’s centerpiece is Ejiofor’s remarkable performance, giving it a core of unquenchable humanity. Newcomer Lupita Nyong’o shines as a tormented slave woman, as does Alfre Woodard in a striking cameo. J.L.

Ender’s Game

For years now, the trend in Hollywood franchise entertainment has run toward pompous bloat, and writer-director Gavin Hood doesn’t stray far from that formula in adapting Ender’s Game to the big screen. It’s a schlocky sci-fi film that wants to bring up weighty concepts like genocide, neofascism, domestic surveillance and technological dehumanization specifically to avoid dealing with them. An adequate Asa Butterfield plays Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, a ferocious child genius in a future world decimated from attacks by an insectlike race known as the Formics. Determined to prevent any future attacks, the world leaders establish a brutal training program to transform video-game-obsessed kids into hyperaggressive military masterminds.

Much of Ender’s Game feels strangely anonymous, a grab bag of loose ends borrowed from more notable sources. There is a seething ambition present here that is not only unrealized, but largely not even attempted. D.B.

Diana

Diana was directed by Olivier Hirschbiegel, the German filmmaker of Downfall who came to America for 2007’s disastrous The Invasion, and now, apparently, doesn’t care what he makes. This is a tacky, media sound-bite biopic that tells you everything you already knew about the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and presents it as insider dish. The movie only covers Diana’s already well-covered last couple years, and as such would have felt more at home on the USA Network in 1999. Naomi Watts is an excellent actress, but the vacuous script boxes her into a flavorless and ennobling impersonation. Her lack of resemblance to Diana makes her most effective when shot from behind, leaving the blond bob wig and high-waisted pants to do the heavy lifting.

A sparkless romance between Diana and a Pakistani doctor (Naveen Andrews, looking positively constipated) takes center stage— it’s like watching wax figures melt. D.B.

The Best Man Holiday

The true story of Texas good old boy Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey), who was diagnosed with AIDS in the mid-1980s and, after a period of I-ain’tno-homo denial, embarked on a resourceful enterprise to treat himself and other AIDS sufferers, skirting—and sometimes running afoul of—the sluggish FDA bureaucracy and its pharmaceutical business cronies.

Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack’s script is plodding and episodic, and director JeanMarc Valée doesn’t build much dramatic momentum. But it hardly matters; the story is dramatic enough. The movie is sparked by its two central performances: McConaughey,

Great Expectations

The umpteenth dramatization of Charles Dickens’ novel of a country orphan raised to the gentry by a secret benefactor arrives from writer David Nicholls and director Mike Newell. David Lean’s 1946 version remains peerless and untouchable, but this one is quite respectable, hampered only by Nicholls’ occasional struggle (especially in the last act) to juggle Dickens’ complicated plot. Newell’s pacing is brisk, and the look and sound of 19th century rural and urban England is spot-on. Star turns from Ralph Fiennes (as Magwich), Helena Bonham Carter (slightly miscast but still effective as Miss Havisham) and Robbie Coltrane (ideal as lawyer Jaggers) bolster a corps of well-cast unknowns including Jeremy Irvine as Pip, Holliday Grainger as Estella, Olly Alexander as Herbert Pocket and Jason Flemyng as Joe Gargery. J.L.

The circle of friends from writerdirector Malcolm D. Lee’s 1999 The Best Man get together for Christmas, where their suitcases aren’t the only baggage that gets unpacked and aired out. The result is much like the first movie: a glossy beautifulpeople soap opera (with the shadow of death adding extra suds) leavened with occasionally awkward comedy, too long by at least half an hour and instantly forgettable (although Lee seems to believe we’ve had the DVD of the original flick sitting on our TVs and have watched it every week since 1999). Like the first movie, there’s a plus side: Lee stocks his cast with some of the best (and in some cases most underrated) African-American actors around: Morris Chestnut, Terrence Howard, Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Regina Hall, Sanaa Lathan. Another plus: their clear pleasure in working together. J.L.

A man alone on a sailboat deep in the Indian Ocean (Robert Redford) is beset by a series of disasters, beginning with a collision with a derelict cargo container— and getting worse from there. Redford is the entire cast, and we don’t even know his character’s name (he’s identified in the credits only as “Our Man”). With no one to talk to, he speaks hardly a word, facing each crisis with a preternatural calm, sinking almost imperceptibly into despair.

It’s a one-man show, all right, but the one man isn’t Redford, it’s writer-director J.C. Chandor (Margin Call), who turns in a virtuoso performance in both areas. Comparison with Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity is unavoidable, and it’s high praise that Chandor’s movie holds up under it—it’s not as tense as Gravity, but just as suspenseful, and almost as exhilarating. “I’ve got to stop taking those Vogue fashion tips to heart.”

When he turns 21, a young man (Domhnall Gleeson) learns from his father (Bill Nighy) that the family’s men can time travel back to moments in their own lives, where they get the chance to correct mistakes—but often with unforeseen consequences. Writer-director Richard Curtis’ premise is a bit on the twee side, and he tends to doodle idly with it—running 123 minutes, the movie sometimes threatens to wear out its welcome. But the idea does have its appeal—who wouldn’t like a do-over now and then?—and the cast certainly has charm in abundance to compensate for the occasional spinning of wheels. Gleeson (son of Brendan) is clearly going places, and he holds his own with both the ever-reliable Nighy and the always-radiant Rachel McAdams as the true love he keeps meeting, losing and meeting again. co-wrote the script with his son Jonás Cuarón, has crafted one of the great whiteknuckle thrillers of all time—as airtight as the pressure suits the astronauts wear, without a wasted syllable and just enough featherlight touches to keep the tension from becoming entirely unbearable. Despite Clooney’s presence, it’s a virtual one-woman show for Bullock, and she’s as brilliant as the movie itself, showing the panic, despair, hope and hopelessness in her character’s struggle to survive. The story is so riveting that Cuarón’s virtuosic touches go almost unnoticed, but they’re there, with stunning visual effects to boot. J.L.

Four old buddies (Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline) gather for a bachelor party in Las Vegas for the last one to marry, where they unpack ancient baggage in the course of proving there’s life in the old boys yet.

Indeed there is, and writer Dan Fogelman and director Jon Turteltaub should thank God for it. Without these guys—plus Mary Steenburgen as a lounge singer who befriends them—the movie would be less than nothing. (It’s hard to believe that this wheezing retread of The Hangover came from the man who wrote the marvelous Crazy, Stupid, Love.) Douglas and De Niro add some dramatic heft while Freeman and (especially) Kline handle comic relief. Steenburgen blends right in, and has a nice singing voice, to boot.

The superhero gets a second solo album with Thor: The Dark World, which manages to outpace the first Thor in terms of atonality and gobbledygook. This time, the crown prince of Asgard battles elves who seek to bring darkness to the interconnected universes, for reasons that probably make sense to them. These elves have been hiding for millennia in the far reaches of outer space, unnoticed by Asgard, even though they have a guy whose sole purpose in life is to watch the entire universe.

Natalie Portman is back as Thor’s wooden love interest Jane, who gets possessed by a powerful form of energy that the elves want to use as an apocalyptic weapon. It would be nice to credit director Alan Taylor for the hilarious irony of having the drowsy Portman play a woman “consumed by energy,” but it’s probably just bad acting. D.B.

Indeed, when listening to Teng’s album, it’s clear the songs possess more of an outward focus rather than an internal one.

“Landsailor,” for instance, examines the increasingly transient nature of life as people relocate with greater frequency, while songs such as “In the 99” examine the effects of not being part of the world’s obscenely rich and privileged class.

Still, in spite of the record’s meaty subject matter, the content is largely juxtaposed against lively music. For Teng, who performs at Assembly in downtown Sacramento on Friday, November 22, this proved crucial.

“I wanted to write an album I was excited about musically that would also be about topics I was excited about without making them be terrible songs,” Teng said with a laugh. “I felt like it would be easy to write very bad, overwrought political songs, so I was trying to figure out how to make an album that’s intriguing, fun and engaging and not too heavy-handed.”

Adding to the challenge was the fact that Teng had precious little time to write any songs before heading into the studio—in fact, most of her material was still incomplete when it came time to record.

“I was up to my ears in classwork, so I didn’t have enough free time to really write an album,” said Teng. “I came in with three or four songs fully done, and the others were

fragments. It was new for me to go into the studio with that much being incomplete.”

Normally, she added, this might have brought about much anxiety.

“Because this was out of necessity, I thought, ‘Well, this is what it is this time, so I’m going to embrace it and trust that something cool will happen,’” she said.

The cool factor of Teng’s album goes beyond its music. The cover art for Aims is a colorful infographic charting recent migration patterns in Detroit, where Teng, who was born in Saratoga, now makes her home.

“I [found] this map of Detroit, and it shows a lot of population change that’s bad,” Teng said of her art choice. “A lot of people moved out in the last 10 years. But if you look downtown and in a couple other neighborhoods, people are actually moving in. It’s a really complex story, and this map tells that story really well.”

It also adds a bit of mystery, she said.

“The [album art] doesn’t tell the entire story … [but] it gives you an idea of how multilayered things are,” she said.

And the Aims experience proves Teng’s love of music is multilayered, too: The artist said she was able to walk away from her music and then actually come back to it with a greater passion than she had before.

“ I spent three years [doing graduate studies] in a sustainability program, so I was immersed in bigger issues than just me and a boy.”

Vienna Teng “Grad school rekindled my romance with songwriting and music,” Teng said. “I felt like I had settled into a marriage with music when I was doing it full time, where I absolutely loved the life I had, but it definitely was a fulltime gig that had all these pressures.”

Now, she said, she approaches music with a renewed appreciation and focus.

“To step away from [music] for a bit and [then] be able to say, ‘I make music because I have to, because I want to, because I’m in love with the creative process’ … was really amazing.” Ω

It’s a motherlovin’ twerk off: No, Waka Flocka is not the sound Fozzie Bear made on The Muppets. In fact, Waka Flocka Flame isn’t a joke at all, as proven by the electric live show the artist put on at Assembly on Monday night.

Like most hip-hop shows, this one sported too many openers— some better than others. Sacramento locals Takticz and Chuuwee got more reaction from the crowd than Flocka’s own support acts whose lack of stage presence and lackadaisical performance made all but their ironically huge gold chains forgettable.

Waka Flocka came out to play for a crowd that was turned up to the max. Flocka’s crunk energy was accompanied by the most punk-rock drummer to ever grace a hip-hop stage. The drummer didn’t even sit for half the set. Instead, he paced along the stage, playing drums and spinning and throwing his drumsticks and basically just catching the gangster-rap equivalent of the Holy Ghost.

Halfway through his set, Flocka jumped into the crowd, where he parted the human sea—all while performing, embracing fans and dismissing security. “We’re in Sacramento,” he explained over the loudspeaker, “It’s nothing but love, see.”

And it was. At least until a fight broke out between some girls in the front row. There were at least eight ladies involved. That’s 16 earrings coming undone and 16 high heels being taken off. Flocka addressed the responsible parties and then brought them all onstage to help them release their anger in one of the most innovative humanitarian efforts this journalist has ever seen: a twerk off.

The ladies each took the stage, one by one at first, before coming together to twerk as one. Glad we all already know what twerking is.

Finally, Waka Flocka pulled what seemed to be half the crowd onstage for the night’s final songs.

His willingness to be that close to fans made for a chaotic magic.

Somewhere between the underground and the hit records, we, the fans, often lose that. In hip-hop, there’s a great emphasis placed on “keeping it real.” It doesn’t get more real than being shoulder to shoulder, sweating with the people who support your music.

Ladies love cool Drake: When Drake canceled the Philadelphia date of his tour an hour before it was set to start over concern that a floating catwalk might be unsafe for the crowd below, I seriously thought about not going. Then, I reconsidered. We all have to go, and getting crushed by Drake would be a pretty badass way to die. As it turned out, however, the catwalk in question didn’t hang over the part of Sleep Train Arena where I sat, and so everyone survived Monday’s show.

The catwalk, however, also facilitated the lamest part of the night: an endless shout-out session during which he called out hundreds of individual ladies, telling each one “I see you.” An example, “I see you girl in the striped dress, getting your groove on.” And so on, ad infinitum.

Drake’s energy was much higher during his duet with opener Future on the crowd-pleaser “Same Damn Time.” He also performed his verse from “Fuckin’ Problems,” a collaboration with 2 Chainz, Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky, proving, again, that Kendrick’s verse dominates on that song.

The audience loved songs from Drake’s latest album Nothing Was the Same as much as his classic 2011 release Take Care—the latter one of only a handful of rap records to go platinum since 2006. Drake’s 2012 tour was one of the top grossers of the year, however, bringing in more than $42 million, so don’t shed a tear for him.

The ladies love Drake, but a good portion of the dudes sang and danced along as well—even to his ovary-tingling ballads. The schmaltziest (but still awesome) moment came when an attractive woman, who looked to be in her late 40s, was led out onstage, visibly nervous as hell. Drizzy serenaded her with “Hold on, We’re Going Home.” Drake changed up the words to “Sac-town girls are perfect for me,” and after she was led off, he commented, “I hope she doesn’t think she’s too old. Older women are my specialty.”

The show ended with a surprisingly subdued version of “Started From the Bottom,” and then Drake peaced out by claiming that Sacramento was the best show on the tour. I wonder if this sweet talker says that to every town?

About every third time I hear Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit,” I think about what a bummer it is to have missed the ROCK ’60s (the other two times, I usually change the station). For those periods of imagined nostalgia, there are bands like the Soil & the Sun to fill in the modern-day gaps. Self-described as “Experiential Spiritual Orchestral Rock,” you can probably take a good guess at what the band’s music sounds like without even listening to them, but in case you’re lacking imagination: It borrows psychedelic tropes from bygone eras, layered with vocals that are pleasingly modern—with hints of a meandering Feist or earthy, lackadaisical Local Natives. 1409 R Street, Suite 101; http://thesoilandthesun.com.

Ace of Spades, 7 p.m., $12

Singer-songwriter Luck Kaplansky has had quite a career. She has sung with Shawn Colvin, Dar Williams and Suzanne Vega; had her music featured on TV shows; been praised by The Boston Globe; and appeared on NPR—not bad for someone who started off as a psychotherapist. On Kaplansky’s most recent solo album, 2012’s Reunion, she offers deep insight into the lives of everyday people. Whether she’s crooning on mid-tempo country rocker “The Beauty Way” about people who work hard at a job FOLK they don’t love, or about how people keep pressing on despite hard circumstances in the Americana track “Scavenger,” Kaplansky always hits the emotional bull’s-eye. 13 Main Street in Winters, www.lucykaplansky.com.

In a time when it seemed music could no longer be shocking, Odd Future came along only a couple years ago—with songs about killing cops and murdering ex-girlfriends— that proved this assumption wrong.

Ringleader Tyler, the Creator is the most HIP-HOP offensive and controversial figure in the collective. On the other end of the spectrum is MellowHigh (formerly MellowHype), which features rappers Hodgy Beats and Domo Genesis and producer Left Brain. The beats are just as lo-fi and surreal as the rest of the Odd Future’s releases, though Beats and Genesis are more likely to spend time rapping about smoking weed than stabbing their unborn sons. 1417 R Street, www.oddfuture.com.

Pffft. It’s time to bow down to the overload of synth-pop: Thomas Dolby. He’s probably best known for his 1982 hit, “She Blinded Me With Science,” the video for which made something of an unlikely MTV star out of the bespectacled British musician. But Dolby’s success is hardly about image. In addition to releasing numerous solo albums, he’s also worked with an oddly diverse mix of artists.

He produced Joni Mitchell’s 1985 album, Dog Eat Dog, and loaned mad keyboard skills SYNTH-POP to records by Belinda Carlisle, Ofra Haza, Robyn Hitchcock and Def Leppard. Those kids in Daft Punk only wish they could be so cool.

It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that local reggae-rock quartet Arden Park Roots is influenced by Sublime. It’s not just REGGAE ROCK the resemblance in its simple reggae grooves and eclectic genre tinkering: The quartet actually has a Sublime tributeband side-project called the Livin’s Easy.

Like Sublime, the crew’s music gets itchy quickly and hops around to punk, soul, funk, rock, ska and reggae. It makes mid-tempo rocksteady beats the cornerstone of the music and just takes it where it wants to go from there. Since its inception in 2007, APR’s released three albums and racked up a lot of Sammies awards—all this from four pot-friendly dudes from Arden Park.

Sacramento hip-hop artists will gather this Wednesday to raise money for Stanford Settlement Neighborhood Center’s annual holiday gift drive, Operation Cratchit. The lineup includes emcees Mr. P Chill, J.Smo, Max Bundles, Light-Skinned Creole and the Beatknocks (pictured); 2013 Sammie winner for best Turntablist, Mike Colossal; and instrumental hip-hop- and funk-rockinfluenced duo Tao Jiriki. Plus, it’s at a venue HIP-HOP that features craft beer, art, vintage clothing and gourmet ice pops, so you can just call it hip-hop at a hipster venue. Don’t want to pay the already low $5 admission cost (which—by the way— goes to Stanford Settlement)? OK, but at least donate an unwrapped toy at the door.

Put on those cowboy boots and that “Everything’s bigger in Texas” belt buckle, and get ready for a good old-fashioned, down-home ruckus. Big Trouble is picking up its guitars and fiddle and kicking up its heels COUNTRY/ROCK downtown. I have heard the benefits of legalization of marijuana, and I would like to ask: What about the cons? Among the reasons cited for legalization is the revenue the states will get from taxing reefer, but the Colorado Futures Center wrote a report claiming that the state may actually lose money by legalizing marijuana, due to the societal harm it will cause (“law enforcement, public health and human services”).

Another reason people say marijuana needs to be legal is that people get arrested for possession BEALUM too often, but even that is a myth, as according ’13

Your first argument against marijuana legalization is that it won’t make enough money. You cite a report from the Colorado Futures Center. I read that report.

Amendment 64 dedicates the first $40 million to Colorado’s Building Excellent Schools Today program.

The CFC expects cannabis sales to generate about “only” $21.7 million.

Since when is making $21.7 million a bad thing? That’s $21.7 million that Colorado didn’t have before.

Also, the CFC report uses a baseline of $600 per pound.

Who wants to buy weed As if. Right now, cannabis from a cartel when you sells for at least $800, usually can go to the corner store? around $1,200 per pound.

And that’s for average weed.

So, I think your numbers are skewed. And that report only takes into account Coloradans purchasing weed. If you think that marijuana tourism won’t put a few more million dollars in the kitty, ask Napa County how the wine-tourism industry is doing.

I really like this approach to seeking guidance, and recommend it to you in the coming days. Which hero, dead or alive, could you call on to uplift you? Confederate Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell (1817-1872) sometimes experienced episodes in which he truly thought he was a bird. A third show featured a woman knitting a sweater from start to finish. I wish you would get hooked on slow-motion activities like those, Virgo. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Costa Rica will be closing its zoos in 2014.

What will happen to the 400 or so animals that are housed there? They will have to be rehabilitated at animal rescue centers and then released into the wild. I suspect there will be a metaphorically similar process going on for you in the coming months, Sagittarius. Parts of your instinctual nature will, in a sense, be freed from captivity. You will need to find ways to retrain your animal intelligence how to function outside of the tame conditions it got used to.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Will

fate kick your sweet ass sometime soon?

Quite possibly. You may be compelled to face up to the consequences of your unloving actions or unconscious decisions.

I’m pleased to tell you, however, that you might be able to dramatically minimize or even neutralize the butt-thumping. How? Go over the events of the last 11 months, and identify times when you weren’t your very best self or didn’t live up to your highest ideals. Then perform rituals of atonement. Express your desire to correct wrong turns. Give gifts that will heal damaged dynamics.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18):

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Bill Withers became a big star in the 1970s with hits like “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean on Me.” But he hasn’t recorded a new album since 1985, nor has he toured.

What happened? In Still Bill, the documentary film about his life, Withers says, “I watch other people show off and I say, ‘Man, I used to want to show off.’ If I could just get, you know, moved to. I need a little injection in my showin’ off gland.”

I wish you could get an injection like that, too, Aquarius. I’d like to see you show off more. Not in a contrived, over-thetop, Lady Gaga-esque way. Rather, the purpose would be to get more aggressive in showing people who you are and what you can do. I want your talents and assets to be better known.

Chairman of the (electric) board Geoff Larson never rode a skateboard before college, but then, as a college student, he helped invent an electric skateboard. The co-inventer and co-owner of ZBoard (along with Ben Forman) grew up in Sacramento’s Woodlake neighborhood before earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (and a minor in entrepreneurship) from the University of Southern California. There, he built an electric skateboard prototype as part of a class project before graduating in 2010.

In 2012, ZBoard took off after a successful campaign on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter, and it produces boards inside a huge, multi-tenant industrial Modesto warehouse. In October, the company produced a limited-edition model based on the Back to the Future Part II hover board—with proceeds benefiting The Michael J. Fox Foundation (no, it doesn’t actually hover, but it’s painted to look like the film’s board). On a recent weekday, Larson let SN&R ride a ZBoard and talked about inventing the board, selling them to capitol workers and being on the Today morning TV show.

So, you heard about the owner of Segway who died after driving one off a cliff, right?

That was an unfortunate accident with the Segway. But there’s something in many ways more intuitive—and less risky, even—riding a ZBoard than a Segway.

Plus, you can hop off it.

ZBoard was your senior project in college. Where’d the idea come from?

I did not have a skateboarding background, so to speak, going into college. But I started longboarding at USC—or at least attempting to—because I had three bikes stolen in roughly a semester’s time. And I started longboarding, and then once the project started, I started riding electric skateboards to get a feel for them [and] do some firsthand research.

I didn’t know there were other ones.

There are other electric skateboards, but we’re the only one that doesn’t use a remote control. So, having a little bit of [radio-controlled] car history as a kid, I saw the inherent flaws in having to hold a remote control while you stand on a platform that has a big motor on it. So we came up with this idea, and the name of [ZBoard’s parent] company is Intuitive Motion, which describes how you ride the ZBoard. What we did is to make the lean |

forward cause the [board to] go forward, so you naturally [balance] back to center.

So, did you get an A on the project?

Yes, actually (laughs). They had this class that [required] a group project between mechanical and electrical engineers. And [we were supposed to] come up with an idea, submit a proposal for up to a $500,000 grant to build it. And we built it. We went way over budget. Not by today’s standards—what [ZBoard has] to deal with for inventory—but for broke college students, way over budget.

We got an A, and we were dubbed honorary winners of sort of an informal competition.

And we got refunded the money we spent out of pocket as our prize.

When we were riding it around, working on it, or trying to film something, people would just stop and ask: “What is that? How does it work? Where can I get one? How much and when are they on sale?” And we didn’t have the answers for some of those questions. And that’s where the minor in entrepreneurship came in. We were getting this response, so I decided to start taking some business classes, did a feasibility study, wrote a business plan, and by the time we graduated, gave business-plan pitches.

When did the company actually start?

We started it in 2010 formally with the paperwork, and that’s when we began the process of getting our trademarks and looking at how to file a patent and all that.

And we actually made significant changes to the design throughout that whole time; we spent about two years working on that.

And there’s this thing called Kickstarter out there. And we knew what it was, but we didn’t have a firm grasp |

on it. And [we] just kind of went into it thinking, “OK, so a friend of a friend’s start-up company in the Bay Area raised, like, $100,000 for an iPhone mount,” or something like that, and we were like, “Whoa, let’s give it a shot.” We put [our campaign] up on Kickstarter looking for $10,000—starting with a $500 board, wanting to sell 20 of them. We thought we might sell a few more than that, but we wanted to hit our goal, ship in the parts and build [the boards] in the garage, and use that to get some funding to make the company out of it. And we ended up almost getting like, 3,000 percent of our goal. We raised almost $280,000.

And that’s what set everything in motion and why we’re here [building boards in a warehouse in Modesto].

Who’s the ideal consumer for ZBoard?

The ideal person or use for a ZBoard is short-range commutes—especially in an urban kind of environment. It’s perfect for teenagers, college students and young professionals, in particular. Around the Capitol, it would be excellent to get around, because you don’t have to deal with parking, and you won’t break a sweat when you’re wearing a suit.

Best moment for ZBoard?

It was definitely a highlight going on the Today show. But mostly, it’s been the people we’ve met. We’re part of a traveling museum exhibit put on by Tony Hawk called Rad Science. It’s mostly been the opportunity to have a lot of fun, and I had never been to New York before just over a year-and-a-half ago. Now, I’ve gone [four] times. Ω
