Happier meals On Monday, the McDonald’s Corporation reported its fourth straight quarter of flat sales.

Jim Yin, an analyst with S&P Capital IQ, an international financialinformation provider, shared this observation: “We think (McDonald’s) is losing its appeal to the millennial generation, who prefer healthier foods,” Yin said in a written statement to the Reuters news service.

And often, healthier means animal-free. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a division of the National Institutes of Health, the benefits of a vegetarian or vegan diet “arise from lower intakes of saturated fat, cholesterol and animal protein.”

What’s good for your health is also good for the planet.

In 2010, the United Nations issued a report in which it urged people to adopt a vegan diet, noting that “impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products.”

Enough with the preaching, it’s time to act.

W

hen it comes to making decisions about planning and development in low-income neighborhoods in Sacramento, community voices are often noticeably absent from the discussion. Sacramento Housing Alliance is trying to change that through a new program that trains community members to become future leaders who influence policy changes on land use, transportation, housing and jobs in their neighborhoods.

Sacramento Housing Alliance was formed 25 years ago to advocate for affordable housing on behalf of community members living on fixed or low-incomes. Through the third cohort of the Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute (BCLI) program, community members have the opportunity to advocate for themselves.

During five months and 80 hours of leadership development training, residents in Sacramento learn about how policies are made and how they can be an advocate on a board or commission to make sure that low-income — and communities of color — can become part of the process of decision making in their communities.

The program is funded by the Building Healthy Communities grant of The California Endowment and it is the first program of its kind in Sacramento.

“A lot of times, Sacramento Housing Alliance is acting like the public is supposed to act by attending public meetings,” says Veronica Beaty, land use policy director. “But I think the Building Healthy Communities grant is helping us identify and connect people who want to

be a part of the process, so we can kind of make ourselves redundant. It is letting us shift our role to people who actually live in these communities.”

Beaty adds that having community members involved in the decision-making process

“For the past month, BCLI has helped me to rethink and reframe conversations to bring race, ethnicity, class, gender and disabilities back to the forefront of my community and policy work,” Vang says. “Through the program, I’m learning various strategies that decision makers and advocates are using to address the needs of low-income communities of color in the Sacramento region.”

Monthly through December, BCLI participants will host a public forum on current topics important to communities in the region. The next BLCI public forum, Transportation for Everyone, will take place at 6 p.m. on Nov. 6 at Mercy Housing’s Community Room at 7th and H streets in downtown Sacramento. Why does the city mess with Food Not Bombs?

Re “Sacramento threatens Food Not Bombs for feeding hungry in downtown park� by Nick Miller (SN&R News, October 17): Why do police fuck with the poor? Simply put: Because they can. I think the police should only be worried if the group Food Not Bombs suddenly changes its name to Bombs Not Food.

If the real issue is about food safety, I understand and wouldn’t want people getting sick.

However, let’s say rich people were in the park handing out food to the rich, or FNB was handing it out to the rich: Would the police step in? Probably not, because the rich have power, and maybe an officer would lose his job, or at least get his hand slapped. I think Cesar Chavez would be having a fit if he knew what was going on in the park named after him.

A lot of the SN&R articles are really anger-inducing, but I think they do need to be told. Nice work, SN&R. Now I have to go offline to get my blood pressure down.

Marijuana rescues alcoholics Re “Weed over booze� by Ngaio Bealum (SN&R The 420, October 17): Many marijuana smokers have turned their lives around by putting down the bottle and picking up the marijuana pipe. These former alcoholics no longer wake up with debilitating hangovers.

They are no longer at risk of overdose death.

Because they have chosen a safer alternative to alcohol, they now lead productive lives.

Yes, some marijuana users have substance-abuse problems stemming from traumatic life experiences. The last thing they need is Big Brother testing their bodily fluids and threatening jail time.

This type of coerced “treatment� is what modern-day marijuana prohibitionists are advocating. It’s increasingly clear that full marijuana legalization is inevitable. Drug-war profiteers are hoping to keep the prison-industrial complex alive and bloated by marrying it to the drug-treatment industry. Legitimate substanceabuse treatment providers have reason to be skeptical. Forcing pot smokers to relapse into alcoholism is not a good use of tax dollars.

The war on marijuana is a cultural inquisition, not an evidence-based public-health campaign.

Experts debate whether young adults will sign up for health care When 2014 arrives, it will be the law: You must have health insurance. by But it’s unclear just how many Alastair Bland people will abide by this basic mandate of the Affordable Care Act when it takes effect on January 1. It’s estimated that between one-half and two-thirds of currently uninsured Californians will buy in to the soon-to-be enacted system.

Scofflaws who choose to go without health insurance will have to pay a small, almost trivial fine. And while reform has been widely hailed as a remedy to America’s epidemically high health-care costs, analysts point out that the system’s effectiveness will depend upon heavy enrollment.

Young adults, they say, are the people most likely to go without health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. But, ironically, the fact that many 18- to 34-year-olds—a category sometimes dubbed the “young invincibles”— are healthy enough to live without insurance is the very reason that the new system needs them onboard.

“For the formula to work, you need these young people paying in—people who use health care at a lower frequency,” said Robert Phillips, with the Sierra Health Foundation. “That’s how to keep rates affordable.”

Overall, Phillips believes new signups for health care will accelerate with the implementation of “Obamacare.”

For instance, people who previously had health insurance are likely to keep themselves insured after January 1, 2014, Phillips said, as are those who become newly eligible under the new law.

But, he said, “It’s the people between 18 and 35 who we aren’t sure about.”

In Washington, D.C., there is an outreach organization called Young Invincibles that focuses on this demographic cross section. The group’s California’s policy and research tracker Linda Leu said there are about 19 million young adults in the nation who currently have no health insurance. The Affordable Care Act will make about 17 million of them eligible for free or reduced-cost

health care—and Leu believes most will opt to get it.

“It’s a myth that these people don’t want health insurance,” Leu said. “The truth is, they don’t have it because it’s unaffordable.”

A June poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that seven out of 10 young American adults said it was very important for them personally to have health insurance. The rate was nearly 90 percent among the public overall.

Sixty percent of the nation’s 19 million uninsured young adults will be able to buy health insurance for less than $100 a month.

Forty percent of uninsured participants said cost was the main reason they had not bought insurance. Another poll, conducted in July and August by the same group, found that 40 percent of those without insurance would not buy any even though they would be fined as a result.

That may be partly because the penalties are minimal—and certainly not enough to offset nonparticipation. The

fine for the first year that one chooses not to buy health insurance will be $95, or 1 percent of a person’s annual income—whichever figure is greater. By 2016, the fine will reach a cap of $695 or 2.5 percent of one’s income.

“The fine for not enrolling is small, but it leaves you one medical emergency away from financial ruin,” noted Anthony Wright, the executive director of Health Access California, based in Sacramento. “Or you can pay a little more, and you’re covered.”

The cost of coverage under the Affordable Care Act will vary from person to person, or family to family— but it will likely reduce rates for most Americans. Leu with the Young Invincibles said that, overall, 60 percent of the nation’s 19 million uninsured young adults will be able to buy health insurance for less than $100 a month under the impending law.

Pricing will work on a sliding scale, and for 2014, the rates have been set. A person can easily estimate one’s insurance rates for the year at http://kff.org/ interactive/subsidy-calculator.

For the benchmark Silver plan, referred to in most discussions and used in most calculations, the premiums will be 2 percent of a person’s income level for those making 138 percent of the federal poverty level—about $15,900 for a single person without children.

For wealthier Americans, the cost will be as much as 9.5 percent of one’s income level. For individuals making less than $15,900, Silver plan coverage will be free. There will also be three other options—Bronze, Gold and Platinum—each with its own costs and benefits.

“This is transformation,” said Wright.

“We’re going from a system where you’re charged based on how sick you are to one where you’re charged based on what you can afford.”

Certainly, some Americans will decline to buy health insurance even after the Affordable Care Act kicks in.

Phillips at the Sierra Health Foundation said that if 2.5 million to 3 million young, healthy Americans go this route, “affordability could become an issue.”

Wright said that in California, as many as one-half to two-thirds of uninsured people will gain health insurance during the first year that the law is in place. Several years down the road, this gap will tighten. Among people who remain uninsured, there will, Wright said, be two categories—those who simply don’t find the time to apply and enroll, and those who intentionally, actively opt to pay the fine.

Wright believes that “the vast, vast majority of Americans want health insurance.” He recognizes that political leveraging has turned health care into a political issue. Still, Wright said, “I think there will be very few people deliberately not getting covered just for the sake of not having health coverage.” Ω

The 24-hour facility for acute psychiatric care would lie roughly 1,500 feet beyond the edge of Woodlake, a middle-class neighborhood with a somewhat fraught history of its own. Residents have long complained they’re ignored by political representatives and blighted by accumulating liquor stores and social-service facilities. Last year, a nasty public debate ignited when a card room relocated to a nearby hotel following little public input.

Despite the tetchy relationship with residents, city officials say they recorded no objections to the inpatient operation in June, when planning commissioners swiftly blessed the applicant’s rezoning request.

“We had no opposition at that time,” senior planner Lindsey Alagozian told SN&R. That’s probably because few residents actually knew about the project or the franchise behind it.

patient records were being burned at three of Kim’s hospitals, possibly as far back as 2006.

According to a Detroit Metro Times investigation in 2003, IRS and state health-care regulators, internal lawsuits and Kim’s own financial straits forced the doctor to shutter his two Detroit-area hospitals in 2000 and 2002. The Metro Times documented allegations that Kim’s practices inflated Medicare payments by extending patient stays and hospitalizing those without proper documentation.

That’s essentially what’s being argued in a whistle-blower lawsuit much closer to home.

In 2010, the United States government and a mental-health worker sued Aurora’s hospital in Pasadena for fraudulent Medicaid and Medicare billings. The complaint depicts a poorly run and sparsely staffed enterprise that contributed to eight patient deaths and “several rapes,” dating back to 2003.

“Defendants realize huge profits by billing for care and treatment never rendered,” the complaint states.

The lawsuit, being heard in the Central District of California court, is scheduled for a jury trial next spring.

The company’s real-estate attorney, Ryan Hooper, told SN&R he was prohibited from commenting on ongoing litigation, but defended the company’s track record and said the planned hospital would fill both mental-health and economic needs.

“A lot of the allegations are just that—allegations that don’t go anywhere,” he said.

The proof of that, Hooper added, is that the company’s accreditation hasn’t been threatened in its 13 years of existence. “This is one of the most highly regulated areas of business,” he asserted.

And business is “booming,” thanks to the Affordable Care Act, said Hooper. Parity laws in the act require insurance companies to provide equal access to mental-health care.

Signature’s business model serves a clientele that is 80 to 90 percent insured, providing services for which the company is reimbursed.

Plaintiffs in the Pasadena lawsuit say this is how defendants were able to collect roughly $50 million in federal and state contracts, then siphon this money out of the hospital until it was “unable to meet operating costs.”

Similar allegations were made at the Detroit hospitals a decade earlier.

“The unusual part of this story is this trail of defrauding the government … goes way back in time,” said Woodlake resident Mike Acosta, a former administrative assistant at a state psychiatric hospital in Southern California, who began researching Aurora after reading about the project in SN&R. “If not for your story, we would never have even known about this.”

He and wife, Lola, have played Paul Revere in the weeks since, unearthing legal documents and unflattering media coverage, and sharing the information with their neighborhood and local elected officials.

These residents promise to be out in force on Tuesday, when the council considers the request to take a grassy commercial grid and rezone it for hospital construction.

Councilmen Steve Cohn and Allen Warren, who represent the lot and the concerned constituents, respectively, didn’t answer requests for comment before deadline. Ω

A Sacramento community-college professor who let two students wrestle during his interpersonal-communication class is facing scrutiny after one student cut his head.

A cellphone video of the wrestling demonstration uploaded to YouTube got students around the American River College campus gabbing about professor Geoffrey Stockdale’s decision to let the scrum continue, even after one of the students smacked his head on the floor. In the video, the class reacts to the gash dripping blood from the side of their classmate’s forehead. “Hey, you’re leaking, bro. You’re leaking out your eye, bro,” one says.

The dazed-looking student contends he’s OK and tries to carry on with the display, clapping the legs of his concerned opponent, who’s pretty much stopped participating at this point.

Stockdale doesn’t do much during the 56-second clip. At one point, he leans in for a better look when the students take a second tumble to the floor. The video cued an October 17 article by campus newspaper, the American River Current. “(One student) wanted to do a particular takedown,” Stockdale told the Current. “And somehow he did this takedown, and with no mat… of course this is the part that’s going to get me fired. Irresponsibility and allowing it to happen.”

The college’s dean of humanities, Kate Jaques, told SN&R officials were aware of the incident and “looking into this matter closely in order to ascertain all of the facts, as we do not want to rush to judgment.”

After hosting a debate on whether Christianity or secular humanism provides a better foundation for civil society, a Roseville church has gone back on its promise to publish the debate’s full video online.

Phil Zuckerman, sociology professor at Pitzer College and author of Faith No More: Why People Reject Religion, is not pleased with Adventure Christian Church on Stanford Ranch Road. It’s been almost two weeks since the evangelical church hosted the October 12 debate between him and David Marshall of the Kuai Mu Institute for Christianity and World Cultures at ACC’s 3,000-seat auditorium. The church has yet to hold true to what Zuckerman claims was a repeated promise—both via email and in person—that it would post the debate in full on its Vimeo page.

Pastor Bryan Hardwick’s response to Zuckerman’s appeal? According to an account Zuckerman wrote on The Huffington Post: “It just didn’t go the way we wanted it to go. We were not represented well.”

Saved from the hell?

Sacramento city’s contentious school superintendent jumps ship before the storm If Jonathan Raymond is all done with them, could we please have our schools back now?

In the middle of the school year, a few months after renewing his contract, Raymond has decided his work as superintendent of the Sacramento City Unified School District is done. He wants his kids to grow up near family in his home state of Massachusetts. “Can’t blame him. He spent three years as “Chief Accountability Officer,” tracking test scores and other data for Charlotte, N.C., public schools.

Before that, he was a graduate of The Broad Superintendents Academy, a 10-month program for turning businessmen into school chiefs. Before that, he was a CEO of a multimillion-dollar nonprofit for workforce training. Before that, a political dilettante: In Massachusetts in 1996, he ran as a Republican trying to oust Barney Frank from Congress, and lost 72 to 28 percent.

In 2009, Raymond parachuted into Sacramento with this eclectic résumé—unblemished by classroom experience—and soon began dictating what kind of schools we would have, and how many. He played favorites, giving the campuses in his Priority Schools program resources and protection while sacrificing others.

A lot of others. He short-circuited public processes to get his way. And having had his way, he’s now ready to be on his way.

To be fair, Raymond was mildly successful at raising test scores. A slightly higher percentage of students now score “proficient” or “advanced” on standardized tests in most subjects, in most grades, than did four years ago.

Funny though, test scores took a dive during 2012-2013, Raymond’s last full year. None did worse than Leataata Floyd (formerly Jedediah Smith) Elementary School, one of Raymond’s Priority Schools, which plunged 91 points on the Academic Performance Index last year, the biggest drop for any school in the district.

None did better than Maple Elementary School, which Raymond decided to close, but which earned the highest API growth in the district.

These contradictions, and the overall nosedive in scores over the last year, should be troubling to anyone who thinks test scores mean anything. Bites does not. Raymond does: Testing and accountability are his thing. But rather than stay and try to turn those scores around, he is hitting the road.

Raymond is also ducking out on the aftermath of his school closures. The public, and even some members of the elected board of education, have been asking for months for data on how closures have affected enrollment and where all those students wound up. The district has provided nothing. By the time those numbers come out, Raymond’s bags will be packed.

Raymond also recently struck a deal with the U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, committing Sac city schools to tie teacher evaluations to student test scores. In exchange, the feds would loosen up some of the more punitive provisions of No Child Left Behind Act. Problem is, Raymond did this without approval of the elected school board, and without asking the teachers union—who have said they’d never agree to such a wrongheaded scheme.

So, it will become a collective-bargaining fight.

Whether Raymond’s plan fizzles out in failure— or explodes—he’ll be safely away by then.

As for Raymond’s Priority Schools, the district has hired a consultant called Baker Evaluation Research Consulting to assess the program. Some have pointed out that BERC also does work for the Broad Foundation, which runs the Broad Academy. How likely is it that a paid consultant will come back with anything less than a positive endorsement of Priority Schools?

Not sure, but it would have been nice to have some sort of evaluation of the program before Raymond bailed.

Jeff Cuneo, president of SCUSD Board of Education, says Raymond’s controversial policies will continue for now. After that, the next superintendent will decide. “He or she will have a lot of influence and power over whether these programs continue and, if they do, to what extent,” Cuneo said.

And that’s the problem, right there. Too often, the board has acted as a rubber stamp for Raymond’s plans or has been unaware of them.

If board members don’t want to set policy, like they were elected to do, they probably shouldn’t be on the board.

The Sacramento City Teachers Association is hoping that the board will hire a new superintendent with an education background and a willingness to collaborate. Board member Jay Hansen says he also values collaboration, though he backed Raymond on school closures. He says, “The selection of a new superintendent is going to be a great opportunity to hear from all concerned about the direction of the district going forward.”

SCTA president Nikki Milevsky has heard it before. “Board members said how important community input was last time, too.” But we got Raymond instead. Ω

It’s a story of a Sac State football player. A gay bar. A Latin bar.

Hundreds of young women dressed to kill. And hundreds of straight guys happy to hang out with hundreds of young women dressed to kill. This is the story of Club Mango, housed inside of Head Hunters on K Street in Midtown.

Let me start at the beginning. In 1980, a young football player, Joe Gomez, discovers Bojangles, a bar near the Sacramento State University that serves cheap beer. Joe appreciates cheap beer, so he starts going there fairly regularly. After L a while, he notices that there are men dancing

Unfortunately, this bar is having trouble with idiots wanting to beat up its patrons. Terry Sidie, who owns the bar, believes that Joe could solve his problem. Joe is a big man, 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds. Joe has clearly seen Joe Gomez was a the inside of a weight room.

Joe was a middle linebacker middle linebacker who would make any halfnervous, let alone some who would make any back drunken fool that wanted to halfback nervous, beat up patrons of Sidie’s bar.

So, Joe became employed at a let alone some very good wage as a bouncer. drunken fool. His muscles were put to work for a good cause.

Fast-forward to November 2012. Sidie has a new problem. It is his gay bar, Head Hunters, across the street from Faces. Head Hunters needs some help. It is a big place with lots of overhead but not many customers. He talks to Joe about it, and Joe suggests the idea of opening up a Latin club with three dance floors.

The club takes off. I mean, it really takes off.

More immigration reform needed California is home to more than 2.6 million people who have immigrated illegally. They account for one-tenth of the state’s total labor force, from workers in low-level jobs in agriculture, manufacturing, service and construction to highly skilled professionals. They are an integral part of the economy and culture of our state, and they’re not going away.

Those are the facts on the ground, and California took positive steps toward recognizing them recently when Gov. Jerry Brown signed eight bills expanding immigrants’ rights.

Chief among these were laws enabling these immigrants to apply for drivers’ licenses and for licenses to practice law—welcome recognitions of their important role in the state economy. Another new law prohibits police from holding individuals for immigration authorities unless they are charged with certain serious crimes, laying the groundwork for increased trust and cooperation between immigrant communities and law enforcement.

As welcome as these measures are, they do not preclude the need for comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level. In the absence of a workable national immigration policy, states are creating a patchwork system of their own. Some, like California, are encouraging assimilation.

Others, like Arizona, seem to have self-deportation as their goal. The inconsistency is not good for immigrants, the economy or U.S. foreign relations.

Congress should act now to approve the immigration reforms passed by the Senate in June and provide a clear path to citizenship. Ω

Secession, shmecession It goes without saying that Modoc and Siskiyou counties aren’t going to secede from California.

Their county supervisors have passed resolutions expressing the desire to form a new State of Jefferson, and by some reports, Shasta, Lassen and Redding counties are considering similar measures.

But actual secession would require approval from the state Legislature and Congress, and that’s not a realistic possibility—fortunately for the secessionists.

Like many of the state’s remote rural areas, Modoc and Siskiyou have aging populations, high poverty rates and few jobs. They get far more money in state services than they pay in taxes. The government is the largest employer, accounting for more than one in three paychecks. Secession would be a complete disaster for them.

So what’s behind the secession “movement”?

Essentially, irresponsible conservative politicians and a handful of activists who find it easier to paint the government as the source of all evil than to address the need for economic development, lack of health care, substance abuse and other issues facing rural Northern California.

Opting out of the state won’t solve any of these problems. It’s time for the secessionists to drop the theatrics and work with the rest of California for the future of their counties. Ω

t he photo looks like something out of a horror film: A long, thin animal lays dissected on a white table. Metal tools pull the animal’s skin back to reveal its jellied, maroon-colored insides—all soupy, slick and lumpy. It’s the remains of a Pacific fisher, an 8-pound member of the weasel family that’s now hovering near extinction, thanks in part to illegal marijuana farming in the vast forests of California.

Fishers eat forest mice, and forest mice nibble the green stalks of still-maturing pot plants. So illicit growers, who toil deep inside California’s forests, spread powerful rodenticides—rat poison—on the ground near their cannabis crops. The mice eat the poisonous anti-coagulants, get sick, and then the fishers eat the mice. Soon after, the furry forest weasels are melting from the inside out.

Mourad Gabriel, a UC Davis doctoral student who has been researching the health of fishers across the state, showed me the photo, which he took as part of several years of research on the animal. Gabriel’s studies show that about 86 percent of fishers in California have been exposed to rodenticides, and that the percentage has been increasing in recent years.

The habitat range for fishers also overlaps nearly perfectly with known illegal marijuana grows on public and private lands in the state.

Called “trespass grows,” they’ve been found in medium- to old-growth forests in remote areas that range in elevation from sea level up to 6,000 feet, including the foothills and forests near Sacramento.

Hard-line drug warriors here and Washington, D.C., along with environmental groups and the media, have seized upon Gabriel’s work this year. And, largely because of him, the Pacific fisher has become the 2013 mascot for environmental degradation wrought by pot farming.

But some Northern California officials who are on the frontlines of combating trespass grows say they’re only a symptom of a much larger problem: the drug war itself.

Blame pot—or Blame the war on pot?

“My jaw dropped when I saw that study,” said Brad Henderson, who plans habitat conservation for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, referring to Gabriel’s research.

In one study of 58 dead fishers, 79 percent had been exposed to rodenticides, and four died as a direct result of the anti-coagulants.

Gabriel also documented the first incidence of a mother fisher transferring the poison to her offspring through her milk.

In another study, a male fisher was found dead in a marijuana trespass grow on July 31, with a pesticide-laden hot dog still in his throat.

“It means there’s no place safe for wildlife in California,” Henderson explained. “You can go way into the backcountry, and you got anticoagulant in predators.”

New federal laws in the works would stiffen fines for trespass grows. State officials are also assembling a 40-agency task force to tackle the problem.

And the media—including Mother Jones, The New York Times and the Associated Press—has piled on with coverage of the environmental dangers posed by trespass farms, including dead fishers; fish kills in streams sucked dry by pot growing; illegal logging, grading and chemical use; and the lack of erosion controls.

“I think it has reached a fever pitch,” said Gabriel of the news coverage. “I think it’s an escalating fever. We haven’t hit the top of it.

We’re just scratching the surface. The more we scratch, the higher that fever is going to climb.”

In fact, an increasing number of lawenforcement officials in the state and throughout the nation are now pointing to the environmental destruction caused by trespass grows as justification for continuing the war on drugs and increasing government spending to stamp out marijuana production.

Amplified by a willing national media, the environmental harms caused by pot have become “the new reefer madness,” said well-known marijuana historian Dominic Corva.

Others say the war on drugs itself is to blame for the environmental damage wrought by cannabis grows.

Butte County Supervisor Bill Connelly, a conservative who describes himself as “definitely not an environmentalist,” shares this belief. He contends that ramping up the war on pot because of trespass grows will ultimately fail to either eradicate the farms or protect Mother Nature.

As a result, he’s calling for the legalization of marijuana nationwide, joining a cadre of unlikely advocates on the right, including current Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Downey.

They argue that if pot becomes legal, then marijuana production will come out of the shadows and into the light, where pot will be grown legitimately on traditional farms like other crops.

At that point, there’ll be no need for growers to head deep into the woods to produce weed and poison animals.

Although cannabis remains illegal under federal law, Americans consume an estimated 2,500 to 5,000 metric tons of marijuana each year, according to estimates from the RAND Drug Policy Research Center. About 30 million Americans smoke or eat cannabis products annually, and about 6 million people use pot daily.

Weed is the second-most popular recreational substance in the nation, behind alcohol.

Two-thirds of the pot consumed in the United States comes from Mexico, while about one-fifth of it is grown domestically, according to RAND estimates. California produces more weed than any other state, and according to a 2010 Central Valley California High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program report, may account for as much as 79 percent of all domestically grown marijuana.

The federal drug war also has had a huge impact on Northern California, said Corva, a Sarah Lawrence College professor who spent

Big swaths of this region were ravaged and abandoned by logging in the 19th and 20th centuries, and then some of those areas were resettled by back-to-the-land hippies in the 1970s, Corva said. Many liberal activists had dropped out of society after the upheavals of the 1960s, and for them, dope was just another plant in the garden.

Today, $1 out of every $4 in Humboldt County’s economy can be traced to the weed industry, and the area’s rise to dominance in marijuana production can be traced directly to the drug war.

Make no mistake: People grow pot for the money—either to save cash by growing what they personally need or to make money by selling it themselves, exporting it to other states, or cultivating it for medical-pot collectives.

Americans spend an estimated $15 billion to $30 billion per year on weed. The value of the nation’s cannabis per square foot is five-times greater than that of poppies or coca, according to RAND. Currently, a pound of Mexican marijuana costs $50 in Mexico, $500 when it crosses the border, and up to $1,400 by the time it

reaches New York. And a pound of high-grade California indoor-grown marijuana sells for $2,000 here and for $4,000 on the East Coast.

Research shows that traffickers make about $1 for every mile they drive east from California.

But that figure doesn’t reflect the actual cost of producing marijuana; rather, it reflects the risk involved in doing so. As much as 90 percent of the cost of pot is its risk premium, according to RAND. About 750,000 people are arrested annually for violating marijuana laws, and 40,000 people are in state or federal prison for it. In 2010, the government seized roughly 10 million outdoor plants.

Corva said raising the price of drugs was one of the chief goals of the drug war. The thinking was: Price increases would dissuade impoverished users. What actually happened is the potential for intense profits drew the impoverished into the drug trade.

Today, pot is one of the top 15 cash crops in the United States, RAND reports. And it’s no longer confined to just Northern California.

There are black-market plantations hiding throughout the state’s 20 million acres of national forest, as well as in large tracts of private and tribal lands.

Then there’s the illegal logging and the rampant use of animal poisons—plus insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and high-nutrient fertilizers. When the fall and winter rains come, uncontrolled erosion follows. A toxic brew of chemicals and dirt washes downhill into protected areas like the Eel River.

The destruction is happening all across California now.

Created in November 2012, Silvaggio’s research video got picked up by Mother Jones in February of this year and retitled “Google Earth Reveals Devastation Caused by Marijuana Growers.” A story by The New York Times followed. The Associated Press piled on, and Dan Rather recently toured the region in a helicopter for a report on AXS TV. In Butte County, Supervisor Connelly takes reporters to trespass grows on steep, 45-degree hillsides on private land. The illegal farms are studded with denuded trees and littered with poisons and fertilizers. During one tour, he looked downhill and described the fall rains sweeping it all—the chemicals and the toxic soil—down into the creeks, rivers and lakes.

“It definitely has gone up in the last few years,” he said of the number of trespass grows.

But are the impacts from pot-growing larger, or are we just paying more attention to them?

The answer appears to be both.

Marijuana Planting made mention of environmental damage associated with forest grows, said Silvaggio. “The problem is not new.

Everyone has known about this problem for many decades.”

For example, the back-to-the-landers who seeded Humboldt’s pot industry were tree-hugging environmentalists first, and they have long been furious about the second wave of growers who moved in to wreak the same type of havoc as the loggers once did.

Groups like the Environmental Protection Information Center, Friends of the Eel River and the Mattole Forest Futures Project have been advocating for clean pot-growing techniques—including water reclamation, erosion control and organic growing methods—since the 1990s. They’ve gotten a number of environmental groups in Northern California fired up about the issue for at least a decade.

The clamor for more eco-conscious potgrowing then hit a new peak in 2008 with the Hacker Creek diesel spill that fouled a whole watershed. “That broke the code of silence right there, and then people came out,” Silvaggio noted.

But experts say what has really amplified the issue this year are two factors: Federal law enforcement has made environmentalism a new platform of the marijuana war, and the media, which never tires of stories that combine

shadowy, violent drug cartels with weapons, weed and helicopters, and can now add cute dead animals to the mix.

Humboldt State University sociologist Josh Meisel said he caught a glimpse of the federal government’s new messaging on pot two years ago in a meeting with Tommy LaNier, head of the White House’s national marijuana initiative.

According to Meisel, LaNier said federal authorities “recognize that public opinion has shifted, and they can’t wage this battle on the historic platform of it being an issue of morality.”

According to Meisel, LaNier said, “The public doesn’t buy that anymore. We aren’t going to win this as a battle of morality. We have to wage it in terms of the environmental destruction.”

And in a podcast produced by the U.S. Forest Service in August 2009, U.S. drug czar Gil Kerlikowske said he wanted to build a coalition based on the environmental harms of pot-growing.

“What seems to be missing from the regular media reporting on the whole issue is how much damage is occurring to really pristine land,” Kerlikowske said.

LaNier said in the same podcast: “We need to bring in ... the Sierra Club, environmental individuals; we need to bring in as many people, to get them on our side to go to Congress and say, ‘Hey, this is enough. Those are pristine

The shift in strategy is traveling up and down the chain of command. For example, in a 2013 report on the results of a Central Valley marijuana sweep dubbed Operation Mercury, Benjamin B. Wagner, the U.S. attorney based here in Sacramento, trumpeted the seizure of half-a-million marijuana plants and the prosecution of 84 suspects.

But, instead of focusing on charges of drug trafficking, violence or weapons, Wagner’s office highlighted the environmental damage that the suspects had allegedly caused.

One 26-year-old Mexican citizen who was caught growing 16,205 plants in Sequoia National Forest “caused extensive damage to the land and natural resources,” Wagner’s office stated.

“Native vegetation was cut to make room for the marijuana plants and trash and fertilizer containers were scattered throughout the site, including in flowing streams.”

Another Mexican citizen who was convicted of growing 8,876 pot plants cut down native oak trees: “the soil was tilled, and fertilizers and pesticides, including a highly toxic and illegal rat poison from Mexico called Fosfuro de Zinc

And even on the White House’s Web page on marijuana, the environment gets its own section in which the administration states, “Outdoor marijuana cultivation is harmful to the environment.”

Corva laughed when I read him the White House’s statement. “That’s ridiculous,” he said.

“Outdoor is better.

“Where does this come from?” he continued.

“Sensationalist coverage of the exception rather than the rule, and also the conditions of prohibition, basically.”

Meisel added: “There’s nothing about growing dope that has to involve massive amounts of energy, dangerous chemicals, water diversion, disrespect to your neighbors and killing animal species—just like we don’t have to do that growing tomatoes. And we don’t grow tomatoes in Yosemite.

“These are unintended consequences of the policy, not the plant.”

“Are they up there for the dry weather, great soil and ample water?” said celebrity growing instructor Ed Rosenthal. “No, they’re up there because it’s hard to get caught.”

Legalizing marijuana and growing it on traditional farms, alongside other crops, also will eliminate the risks currently associated with pot production and distribution—and will likely reduce costs dramatically. According to RAND estimates, fully legalized, commercially farmed high-grade pot would cost just $20 per pound to produce. And low-grade weed would cost only $5 per pound. With profit margins so low, there simply would be no incentive to spend four filthy months growing weed in bear-infested backwoods, Silvaggio and other advocates of legalization point out.

Plus, farming marijuana out in the open would be much better for the environment— there would be no need, for example, to siphon water illegally from creeks and streams. And pesticide and insecticide use could be regulated—like they it is for any other crop.

Prohibition’s failure Meisel said that the greenwashing of the war on pot “has become a tool to break the back of the legalization movement,” referring to the decision by drug-war enforcers to shift their rhetoric from the supposed dangers of smoking weed to the environmental damage caused by trespass grows in order to gain support among environmentalists for the war on pot. “It’s a strategy to undermine local growing across the board, as opposed to going after people who are violating environmental laws.”

Norms have shifted around marijuana consumption, Silvaggio said. “Presidents have smoked weed. But there’s a need to keep it illegal. There’s this particular function it provides—that is law-enforcement money.

“So they’ve switched tracks,” Silvaggio continued. “And this track has proved very useful.”

But the way to halt environmental harms caused by growing pot isn’t through a new campaign against weed: It’s through legalization, taxation and regulation of cannabis, said Humboldt County Sheriff Downey during a public meeting with North Bay Congressman Jared Huffman on August 29. “I’ve never been a big fan of legalization,” Downey told the crowd.

“But right now, I think that’s the most logical way to end this drug war.”

After all, it was the drug war that sent growers into the forest in the first place. And farming in the woods offers no particular advantage for growers—other than allowing them to avoid detection by law enforcement.

“If it was grown like corn or hemp, it would be regulated, including the discharge of chemicals and the amount of water used and the way you grade,” said Connelly. In addition, organic pot-growing likely would sprout as a major industry.

And because cannabis is a highly productive plant, it wouldn’t take up that much farmland.

According to a RAND study, just 10,000 acres of intensively farmed land could grow all the dope Americans consume each year.

California’s estimated share would total only 1,600 acres. By comparison, the state currently dedicates about 150,000 acres to pistachio growing each year.

The relaxation of pot prohibition has already caused price drops in California, Colorado and Washington, but this half-solution has caused existing farmers to plant more to make up for lost profits. It’s going to take a true market crash from national legalization and regulation to halt wildland growing forever. “I think we’d see a decrease slowly in environmental harms, and then it would be minimal,” Silvaggio said. “Long term, we’d see a recovery in the ecosystem.”

Silvaggio also argued that the news media needs to start sharing the stories of growers who farm sustainably in Humboldt and how they do it. “There’s a total disregard for interviewing and talking with communities that are growing ecologically sensitive weed.”

Sugar-skull artist Jesus Barela remembers buying the tiny Día de los Muertos offerings as a child; now, every October, the Sacramento resident teaches classes on how to make them.

ith its skull symbolism and other nods to death, some mistake Día de los Muertos as a means to witchcraft or merely an extension of Halloween. In reality, the holiday, also known as Day of the Dead, represents neither.

Rather, the two-day festival, which can be traced back thousands of years to preColumbian Mexico, celebrates the quandaries

of death by honoring the beauty of life.

Specifically, people use the time to remember those who have died.

Día de los Muertos, which takes place every November 1 and 2, is linked to the Catholic holidays All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, and over the centuries, it has grown in global popularity. Earlier this year, The Walt Disney Company even attempted to trademark the phrase “Dia de los Muertos” for an upcoming children’s movie—don’t worry, the company lost its bid.

The first day is dedicated to the souls of children, followed by a tribute to adults.

On both days, handmade wooden altars are decorated with photographs and ofrendas—or offerings—reflecting the person’s favorite items while alive.

Whether such gifts often translate to candy and toys, Grandpa’s stiffest drink, or Grandma’s tastiest homemade meal, they all symbolize key details that represent the deceased loved ones.

Sugar skulls, decorated treats meant to commemorate the dead, are another popular offering.

In Sacramento, master sugar-skull makers Rob-O and Jesus Barela both create works that draw in the curious as they aim to preserve the culture.

Every October for the past 15 years, Barela has taught art classes in preparation for Día de los Muertos in association with La Raza Galería Posada and, more recently, Spanglish Arte.

These lessons, he says, provide an opportunity to educate the community about Mexican cultural traditions.

“Kids to grandmas to adults … sometimes, I get whole families. Anyone can do it,” Barela says of his classes.

The materials make for a unique art form, he adds.

“Sugar is such a different material. [The skulls] are easy to break, but it’s the experience of doing it. As you’re decorating, you’re reflecting, and I think that [chance to reflect] is the main idea behind sugar skulls.”

The skulls, usually decorated with bright frosting, foils or sequins, make for a colorful ofrenda—but not necessarily an edible one.

Certainly, although they look as appetizing as candy, Barela cautions they’re not exactly dessert.

“I wouldn’t recommend [eating them],” says Barela with a laugh. “You’re handling [the skulls] with your hands during the whole class.”

As such, the skulls are also relatively easy to make, he adds.

“If you can decorate a cake, it’s ... similar,” he says.

As a child, Barela recalls buying sugar skulls with his name written on the forehead.

As such, he adds, his Mexican heritage and customs taught him not be afraid of death.

“When somebody died in our family, there would be their picture hanging and a candle—just in remembrance,” says Barela of his family’s traditions.

Now, through the class, Barela says he’s able to explain the symbolism behind sugar skulls to parents and children. The purpose, he adds, is to dissolve the taboo he believes many associate with the holiday.

“Before, people would ask, ‘Is that witchcraft?’ Day of the Dead is not about gore or

witchcraft or voodoo,” Barela says. “It’s a day to remember your loved ones.”

For artist Rob-O, memories are crafted by way of customized plastic molds made from a vacuum-form table.

The result are skulls that come in a variety of shapes, some weighing more than 30 pounds.

Each season, Rob-O showcases his glass-encased, vibrantly colored sugar skulls in area art shows. Currently, his works are on display through January 5, 2014, as part of a Día de los Muertos exhibit at The California Museum.

Shortly after, the couple hosted a party at its Elk Grove home and invited friends to bring various ofrendas representing lost loved ones. The intimate gathering included a large altar and enough sugar skulls for everyone to decorate.

Now, in keeping true to Mexican tradition, Rob-O says he gains a great sense of pride when he creates skulls.

Barela agrees. Sugar skulls, he says, are a form of creativity and expression.

“Sugar skulls have become art,” he says. “And some artists take sugar to a different level.” Ω

Meringue powder is just fancy speak for dried egg whites and can be found in the spice aisle of most grocery stores. Typically, the trick is to mix 1 teaspoon of powder for every cup of sugar with enough water to replicate the act of making a sand castle.

“When you mix [the ingredients] together, you want to be able to grab a clump of sugar and scrunch it up on the inside of your hand,” he explains. “Let it go, and if it keeps that shape, you’re fine.”

Pack the blended sugar into a skull mold—pick some up at Spanglish Arte (2574 21st Street) starting at $9 each. Then, place a piece of cardboard to the back of the mold, flip over to release the sugar skull, and let the object dry for up to three days.

Once dried, the skulls are ready to decorate with frosting, food coloring, sprinkles, sequins and other adornments. (S.R.)

stopped by my office to drop off a manila envelope full of screener films shown at the 17th annual Tower of Youth’s North American All Youth Film and Education Day, he wore an immaculate cream-colored suit over a pinstriped shirt. He looked like Tom Wolfe but talked like Robert Evans, and is now officially the first man to ever refer to me as “babe.”

Bronston promised that the films, made by both local students as well as aspiring filmmakers from across the United States and even Canada, were of “Academy Award quality.”

It was a bold claim, since most Academy Award-winning movies aren’t even of “Academy Award quality,” but I’ll take the Tower of Youth slate over the likes of Crash any day.

The festival featured five showcases: The eight shorts featured in Showcase 1 comprise a diverse lot that’s representative of Tower of Youth as a whole, with absurdist comedies, More than documentaries and mini threeanything, act dramas. Joseph Procopio’s sleek opener Sundae tells the the movies story of high-school students articulate a growing apart in the wake of a tragedy, and it has a moony concern for the fatalism that captures the feellousy future ing of young love separated.

It’s about a racist beaten and dumped by the side of the road, where several white people pass him by before a Muslim man offers aid. At one point, we overhear a report of “tensions due to the recent terrorist attacks at Disneyland,” so perhaps Persing has a future writing Roland Emmerich films.

These films truly represent the voices of their generation, so the most rewarding entries feature a more personal and youth-oriented perspective. My favorite was Lily Yu’s powerful Checkmate, which is fueled by the charging rhythms of free verse. It follows an African-American high-school student who feels like he’s playing chess on a board where “there are no black pieces.”

More than anything, the movies articulate a concern for the lousy future their young makers are being handed. Before it’s Too Late chronicles life in an area in rural Kentucky where mining and waste have rendered the water too poisonous to touch, while Erin Cole’s witty Above Water deals with “the consequences of a failing economy.”

This is not to say that genre filmmaking and cinematic style don’t have their seat in the Tower of Youth. Hank is an office comedy about a gawky wallflower whose “hobbies include showing up on time.” Even better is Charles Blecker’s elegant Epitaph, featuring a death-obsessed child hero named Billy Coffin, and a quirky-humanist sensibility straight out of Wes Anderson.

The Tower of Youth’s North American All Youth Film and Education Day was held on October 4, at the Crest Theatre, with five showcases of short films. Access Sacramento Channel 17 will stream the entire program on Sunday, October 27, at 5 p.m. and Monday, October 28, at 1 a.m.

Headliners include Railroad Earth (who will host as well as perform three sets), Galactic, Matisyahu and Les Claypool’s Duo de Twang. Everyone knows Asian horror stories are way scarier than non-Asian ones (Ringu was much scarier than The Ring, for example). Check out the San Francisco-based story-theater group Eth-NohTec, presented by the Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra, on Sunday, October 27. In Asian Tales of Terror, the troupe will layer Asian mythology, folktales and urban legends with performance art. Caution: It’s for adults and children age 9 and older. Ramen & Rice 807 Howe Avenue, (916) 922-6227, www.facebook.com/ramenrice When you go to an Asian restaurant and there are two different varieties of food on the menu—a common example would be Chinese dishes by Becky Grunewald on the menu of a Vietnamese restaurant— it’s best to order the cuisine which the restaurant specializes in. Just because the place threw some sweet-and-sour pork in there along with the pho doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to order.

At Ramen & Rice, a ramen restaurant that also makes Korean dishes, this is also true. In this case, though, it’s best to stick rating: to the Korean dishes, although the name HHH 1/2 doesn’t make that immediately obvious. dinner for one: Ramen & Rice has been open about a $10 - $15 year in the Arden Arcade area. It’s located in a strip mall, which pretty much goes without saying in that area, but the owners have made the small space welcoming, with red lanterns hanging over the open kitchen and high-backed, sturdy wooden chairs.

The cozy size also lends to the pleasant atmosphere. On my second visit, all of the eatery’s tables were full, and we had to sit at the bar, which made for a fun change.

The service here is excellent, and the server H made sure to take us from the bar to a table flAwed as soon as one opened up.

HH On the Korean side, the bibimbap HAs moments restored my faith in the dish, which I had HHH recently sworn off. Typically, this is never AppeAling as good as I want it to be, and I can never HHHH put my finger on why. Order it with the AutHoritAtive brown rice, which imparts a delightful HHHHH nutty flavor. The sliced mushrooms add epic to the umami of this dish, and the shoyu, mustard and spicy sauces that come on the side should all be used liberally. The final bites are the best—the rice gets crispy at the bottom of the sizzling bowl. Why can’t I order a bowl of just that?

A side of kimchee was served lightly spicy, and a steaming platter of bulgogi arrived sweet and tender.

I’ve had Japanese curry, but never Japanese curry ramen, and the steaming bowl here proved welcoming on one of the region’s first chilly fall days. The curry sauce (it’s really too thick to call a broth) boasted a comforting flavor, and, unusually, a bit of spice, but the liquid continued to cook the noodles until they were a gummy mess. I had added gyoza on top for $2—the fine chopped pork and chives were encased in a slippery wrapper and were obviously made fresh at the restaurant. I will be ordering these as a side in the future.

Popping up Chef Michael Thiemann’s résumé can get a foodie’s mouth salivating: He’s worked in the kitchens of San Francisco’s Wayfare Tavern and downtown’s Ella Dining Room & Bar. But Thiemann is planning on opening two new ventures downtown on K Street, one of which is called Mother, a vegetarian restaurant (hopefully with plenty of vegan options, eh?). Worth sampling: the goatcheese stuffed peppers, chilled Spanish-spiced shrimp, and a cheddar-and-apple melt. Or try the ambrosial Wine Country sandwich, with salty prosciutto, sweet fig jam, oozy mozzarella and peppery arugula on grilled bread. Estelle’s Patisserie With its marble tables and light wooden chairs, there’s an airy atmosphere, casual and cozy. Estelle’s offers an espresso bar and a wide assortment of teas and muffins and rolls for the breakfast crowd as well as sweets, including DayGlo macarons. For the lunch-inclined, there are soups, salads, sandwiches and meat or meatless quiche. One of the authentic touches is the

spare use of condiments. The smoked salmon is enlivened by dill and the flavor of its croissant. Its tomato bisque is thick and richly flavored, and, in a nice touch, a puff pastry floats in the tureen as accompaniment. There’s a lot to like about Estelle’s—except dinner. Doors close at 6pm. Grange Restaurant & Bar You won’t find any “challenging” dishes on this menu—just delicious local and seasonal food such as the Green Curry & Pumpkin Soup, which has a Southeast Asian flair. A spinach salad features ingredients that could be considered boring elsewhere: blue-cheese dressing, bacon, onion. But here, the sharply cheesy buttermilk dressing and the woodsy pine nuts make it a salad to remember. Grange’s brunch puts other local offerings to shame. The home fries are like marvelously crispy Spanish patatas bravas. A grilled-hamand-Gruyere sandwich is just buttery enough, and an eggwhite frittata is more than a bone thrown to the cholesterolchallenged; it’s a worthy dish in its own right. American.

Zia’s Delicatessen Zia’s Delicatessen isn’t really about trying every sandwich: It’s about finding your sandwich. In addition to a large selection of salumi, there’s the worthy eponymous offering, served with a wedge of zucchini

frittata, a slice of provolone, romaine lettuce, grainy tomato, and a simple dash of vinegar and oil that adds tang.

Order it hot, so that the provolone melts into the bread.

Also tasty: the hot meatball sub with small-grained, tender meatballs bathed in a thin, oregano-flecked tomato sauce that soaks into the bread. A tuna sandwich is sturdy, if not exciting. It is just mayonnaisey enough, with tiny, diced bits of celery.

A rosemary panino cotto with mozzarella could benefit from a more flavorful cheese. For a meatier option, try the Milano: mortadella, salami, Muenster; all three flavors in balance.

Midtown Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co. The restaurant, by the same owners as Midtown’s The Golden Bear, sports a firefighting theme (a ladder on the ceiling duct work, shiny silver wallpaper with a ratand-hydrant motif, et al) and a bar setup that encourages patrons to talk to each other.

An interesting wine list includes entries from Spain and Israel; there are also draft cocktails and numerous beers on tap.

The brunch menu is heavy on the eggs, prepared in lots of ways. One option is the Croque

Madame, a ham-and-Gruyere sandwich usually battered with egg. This one had a fried egg and béchamel, with a generous smear of mustard inside. The mountain of potato hash alongside tasted flavorful and not too greasy. The menu also features pizzas and house-made pastas, but one of its highlights includes an excellent smoked-eggplant baba ganoush, which is smoky and garlicky and served with warm flatbread wedges and oil-cured olives. The bananas foster bread pudding is equally transcendent, accompanied by very salty caramel gelato, pecans and slivers of brûléed bananas. American. 1630 S St., (916) 442-4885. LowBrau This place specializes in beer and bratwursts.

Both are done smashingly.

The sausage is wrapped in a tight, snappy skin like a gimp suit, which gets nicely charred by the chefs. Within it lies a beguilingly spicy and juicy piece of meat. Get it with a pretzel roll for a truly exciting experience. There are vegan options, too: The Italian, an eggplant-based brat, has a surprisingly sausagelike texture that no self-respecting carnivore will turn down for lack of flavor.

Toppings include sauerkraut, a “Bier Cheese” sauce and caramelized onions. The idea behind Duck Fat Fries is a glorious one, yet somehow still falls short. You just expect something more when you see the words “duck fat.”

Istanbul Bistro Turkish chef Murat Bozkurt and brother Ekrem co-own this paean to their homeland, with Ekrem usually at the front of the house, infusing the space with cheer. Turkish cuisine features aspects of Greek, Moroccan and Middle Eastern flavors. The appetizer combo plate offers an impressive sampling. Acili ezme is a chopped, slightly spicy mixture of tomatoes, cucumber and walnuts that’s delicious paired with accompanying flatbread wedges. For entrees, try the borani, a lamb stew with garbanzos, carrots, potatoes and currants. The meat is very tender, while the veggies arrived nicely al dente. Also good is the chicken shish plate (souvlaki), which features two skewers of marinated grilled chicken that’s moist and succulent. A large patio is welcoming and allows diners to bathe in the haze from the drum smoker. You’ll leave perfumed in white-oak and almondwood smoke; a good thing if your date digs the smell of meat and wood, bad if you have a meeting after lunch.

Recommendations include the ribs, which are astounding in texture. The meat falls off the bone with confidence that your mouth will catch it. A lack of salt or spice on the ribs, however, robs them of the chance of being truly astonishing. (An easy fix.) The brisket is also fantastic—as tender as the first time you held hands with a high-school crush, with a sweet, smoky flavor that’s just as memorable.

South Sac A&A Tasty Restaurant and Bar This Little Saigon eatery boasts such an extensive menu of Chinese and Vietnamese dishes that it’s hard to pinpoint its crown jewel. Notable options include a salty fish and chicken-fried rice entree with stir-fried vegetables.

The fried rice offers copious pieces of the diced salty fish.

This may seem a bit weird to the uninitiated, but the reward is a unique, jolting pungent flavor that spruces up an otherwise boring chicken-fried rice. Elsewhere on the menu, the Vietnamese pork-chop rice plate, served

greasy in all the best ways.

The lengua (tongue) is soft and dreamily reminiscent of only the most ethereal bits of beef. The fish is fine and flaky and the cabeza and pork are herculean in flavor options worthy of note, too. Tacos are small and served on two tiny tortillas (flour or corn, your call) with a bit of house salsa that has all the kick of a pissed off Girl Scout who’s just tall enough to nail you right under the kneecap. Customers can choose from two types of pies: breakfast or lunch. Breakfast pizzas consist of standard pizza dough, on top of which rests a thin layer of egg, cheese and toppings (read: no sauce).

One pepperoni-and-jalapeños morning pie starts off well, but then the dough disappoints. It doesn’t quite fit in either the “thick” or “thin” category; it’s not yeasty enough and too chewy and firm. A mushroom-andspinach pie offers better

At Asian Café, it adds optional offal add-ons—various organ meats, entrails, et al—to three versions of the dish: beef with tripe, chicken with gizzards, or pork with pork skin. The beef salad offers a gentle respite from aggressive flavors, consisting of medium-thick chewy slices of eye of round with red bell pepper, chopped iceberg and hot raw jalapeño. The single best dish here is the nam kao tod, a crispy entree with ground pork that’s baked on the bottom of the pan with rice, then stirred and fried up fresh the next day with dried Thai chilies and scallions. The Hideaway Bar & Grill This bar fills a niche Sacramento might not have known it lacked with its vague rockabilly vibe, lots of greased hair on the men, brightly dyed hair in retro styles and cat-eye glasses on the ladies, and an abundance of black clothes and tattoo sleeves for all. The liquor selection is basic (no craft cocktails here). The menu’s heavy on fried appetizers, salads, sandwiches and burgers, the latter of which are architectural, towering assemblages. Happily, the fluffy charred buns are sturdy enough to hold up when the tower is squeezed to a more realistic height. A meaty veggie burger (one of three veggie sandwich options) gets crunch from fried pickles and sweet heat from barbecue sauce. Overall, the Hideaway offers cheap beer, adequate bar food and a comfortable place to hang with out friends.

Swanky sweets The Westfield Galleria at Roseville may still suck due to its abundance of bros, Real Housewives-esque women and spoiled teenagers, but it sure scored big with some awesome shopping snacks last month: Beard Papa’s Fresh’n Natural Cream Puffs and Lolli and Pops both held grand openings in September.

Beard Papa’s is an international chain that started in Japan in 1999, and the Oklahoma-born Lolli and Pops describes itself “a small collection of candy stores.” I didn’t have a chance to try anything from Lolli and Pops, but Beard Papa’s served up some of the best fresh cream puffs I’ve ever tried. Its original product—a choux pastry dough filled with vanilla custard— tasted basically like an ice-cream dumpling. There are plenty of rotating flavors (for the custard fillings and choux pastry shells) as well, which will surely have me frequenting the bakery, even if I have to endure the Bros-ville mall.

Most of the stories take place in the American Midwest, with characters who are dealing with the consequences of infidelity and grown-up chimpanzees; moving into a retirement home and endlessly waiting for a son to visit; or being an insecure and aging single woman with a failing dance studio. James writes of the unique paradox of being a first-generation American, belonging to two and yet neither culture fully, and at the core of most of the characters’ stories is family and the baggage created from a major life event. Luckily, for those that have zero desire to hit the streets as a provocative Pikachu, the UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance has unearthed 10 years’ worth of costumes for the Enchanted Cellar Costume Rentals and made them available to the public for rental or purchase. And when these theater folk say “costume,” they mean it. There are elaborate versions of old standbys (Glinda the Good Witch, Superman, Little Red Riding Hood, etc.), and more obscure options, like Miss Havisham (you know, of Great Expectations fame) and steampunk attire.

Not every judgment is in our own best interest. And not every judgment is in service of our collective spiritual evolution.

I believe that humanity is one family, and that we are responsible to and for one another. Translation: We are related through love.

It’s painful to watch someone we love make self-harming choices. If that person is a child or teenager, we must intervene, always. When an adult repeats a pattern of poor choices, our responses should be informed by the variables of the story.

My response, for example, to a chronic addict who regularly demands my money will be different than my response to a friend who yearns for a partner but continually dates people who are commitment-conflicted.

But, yes, either way, I would choose to drop a seed of insight into a friend’s life. That’s because I believe that humanity is one family, and that we are responsible to and for one another. Translation: We are related through love. When we love someone, we challenge that person to become his or her best self. It’s a tough, ego-grinding effort to challenge someone, or to be challenged. It demands an ongoing emotional housecleaning to stay awake to our own fears, arrogance, vulnerabilities and

Another thing I’ve learned is this: Truth-telling is a gift that should have no strings attached.

If you clue someone in on his or her self-harming behavior, don’t expect change or gratitude.

Wisdom is most often met by a wall of resistance. If this happens to you, please don’t take it personally.

My job requires that I attend evening social events. I often invite my partner because I work so much, we would not see each other as often if I didn’t. The problem is that she embarrasses me. When she’s introduced, she barely says two words to the person. When conversation goes on for a while in a small group, she mostly chows down. Someone always comments on her behavior. If I don’t invite her to events with me, she gets testy and we argue. What should I do?

Step out solo, at least for now.

Your partner may be an asset to your personal life, but she’s not an asset to your career. If you feel awkward or frustrated, others can sense your discomfort. Eventually, social contacts may prefer to avoid you. If you alone are on the town, you might be motivated to wrap up socializing early enough to meet up with your partner. One thing is clear, however, you must prioritize your relationship. The emotional intimacy that sustains a couple requires an ongoing investment of time, energy and focus. Hanging out together at work-related social events is not sufficient to fuel intimacy.

You might also consider encouraging your partner to open up to others. A gathering with friends is the perfect venue for practicing small talk. Don’t criticize her, though. Focusing on what she does right in social situations will build the confidence she needs to be herself in a world of extroverts. Ω

Gail Russell’s costume design, Corey D. Winfield’s hair and wig design, and Kathy Burleson’s set and light design add to the show’s impressive look. Ah, youth. The innocence, the energy, the innate confidence of knowing what’s right and having the will to do it. That’s what’s at by Jim Carnes the heart of Hairspray now on stage at American River College Theatre.

It’s all wrapped up in a love story—set in Baltimore in 1962—about a chubby white girl in love with dancing, and her determination to take her big hair, her big moves and her black friends onto the local TV dance-party show. The musical is also John Waters’ love song to his hometown. Waters created the movie upon which the Broadway

musical (book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman) was based.

This is a huge production, with 16 principals, an ensemble of 27 and a 15-piece orchestra—led by Susan Hamre—in the pit.

Director Sam Williams (who also choreographed, with his daughter Sarah Williams) surely has his stage full, but the show couldn’t run any more smoothly. It is tight!

Whether from student or professional actors, the performances he elicits are impeccable.

Standouts include big-voiced Anna Russell as Tracy Turnblad, the innocent at the heart of the story; Valerie Steward-Williams as her mother Edna Turnblad (the role often goes to a man, à la John Travolta in the movie); Keith Riedell as daddy Wilbur; Jalen Justice as Seaweed; Barnie Warrick

5My Own Stranger We have been her kind.

There’s a reason Anne Sexton’s poetry reverberates so strongly in the American consciousness more than four decades after her death: We have been her kind.

Whether that means that we’ve struggled with mental illness or merely with our own artistic demons, we have felt out of place in the world, overwhelmed by experience and searching for a way to make sense of it in language.

But Sexton’s poetry—with her witches and lovely mouse-children and push-mepull-you come-here-go-away relationship with death, sex, love and art—describes it so much better than we could ever manage.

That’s why this production—a West Coast premiere—of Marilyn Campbell and Linda Laundra’s My Own Stranger, based on Sexton’s poems and prose writings, is so amazing.

Directed by Kelley Ogden, My Own Stranger features three versions of Sexton: No. 1 (Ruby Sketchley), who seems to represent the frightened, compliant self; No. 2 (Lisa Thew), defiant and wounded proto-feminist; and No. 3 (Kellie Yvonne Raines), the worldly, wise, sensual self.

They are all Sexton, a sort of Greek chorus of the poet’s experience: It is a return to the core of poetry as performance, and the best sort of union for language and presence. The final performance of this limited run is at the Crocker Art Museum tonight.

Ballet is back The Sacramento Ballet presents three pieces featuring the groundbreaking and often percussive music of Igor Stravinsky, who shook up the arts in the early 1900s. The Rite of Spring, with choreography by Ron Cunningham (Sacramento Ballet’s co-artistic director) is set to Stravinsky’s notorious 1913 score, which triggered fistfights in the theater during its Paris premiere a century ago (and still sounds pretty radical today). Those who love De Palma’s adaptation of the Stephen King novel will probably regard director Kimberly Peirce’s (Boys Don’t Cry) slavish devotion to the original as a pointless validation, but haters and newcomers are more likely to embrace this self-aware update.

Generational context is an enormous variable—I might feel like the terrible Star Wars prequels were an affront to my childhood, but only because the sounds and images of the originals were key inspirations for my young imagination. However, the original Star Wars films weren’t the basis of any cherished childhood memories for my dad—they were just good space-adventure movies.

So, in the interests of full disclosure, I’ll admit that De Palma’s Carrie was a formative cinematic experience, one of the first horror films that impressed anything more than terror on me, and I love it to this day. Therefore, no matter how well-crafted, it’s hard to watch this nearly scene-for-scene—and often shot-for-shot and sound-for-sound—remake without ticking off a mental checklist of pro-con comparisons.

However, for anyone arriving to this new Carrie without baggage, the mostly intact story is queasily irresistible. This is King’s macabre version of Judy Blume coming-of-age juvenilia, with every developmental highlight from first menstruation to prom turned into an otherworldly horror. It may be unnecessary, but Peirce’s Carrie is more than a mercenary remake, and most of what made the original film great is retained.

The modern-day action opens with a less voyeuristic version of the infamous shower scene from the original, in which the sheltered and bullied Carrie gets her first period and is tormented by the popular girls. It’s preceded by a sequence that is even more unsettling

in Peirce’s hands, in which Carrie’s crazed mother nearly stabs her infant daughter straight out of the womb. Whether her hand is stayed by compassion or the baby girl’s undeveloped powers of self-protection is left unclear.

If the actress playing Carrie was anything more than adequate, this film would have worked, but Chloë Grace Moretz (Hit-Girl from the Kick-Ass movies) is overly mannered and false. She gives a child-actress performance, substituting affectation for emotion at every opportunity. That same artificiality permeates the proceedings—everyone here looks too pretty, everything feels too polished, and every theme is a little too obvious and strident.

One the other hand, Julianne Moore is excellent as Carrie’s repressive and hyperreligious mother, wisely refusing to meet Piper Laurie’s fire-and-brimstone performance from the 1976 film. Instead, Moore’s Margaret White is more defeated and haggard, turning much of her loathing and physical punishment inward.

Margaret is a terrible and abusive person but also a product of abuse herself.

Some of the departures from De Palma’s Carrie are disappointing compromises, but other amendments show that Peirce and her collaborators have larger goals beyond updating King’s story for the online-bullying generation. Peirce clearly has ambitions to fashion a coherent feminist revision from a chaotic text, more consciously and carefully inviting in issues of self-mutilation, body image, sisterhood, abortion and rape.

King and De Palma obviously viewed female sexuality as scary and potentially demonic. For her part, Peirce attempts to portray Carrie’s newfound powers as more than just an uncontrollable, hair-trigger vessel for pent-up teenage hormones. That’s admirable, but admirable intentions are anathema to great horror, which thrives on disorder and the exploration of unreasonable fears.

Director Kimberly Peirce clearly has ambitions to fashion a coherent feminist revision from a chaotic text.

Of course, the story builds to a bloody showdown at the prom, which is the part of the film where Carrie purists have been voted Most Likely to Check Out. The more that Carrie unleashes her latent telekinetic abilities, the more the film becomes dominated by annoying special effects and overly complicated retributions against her tormenters.

It just made me long for the genuinely disturbing and nightmarish denouement of the De Palma movie, although this Carrie is solid enough to become a formative cinematic experience for someone. Ω

Captain Phillips

Every word that accurately describes the experience of Captain Phillips makes it sound like the movie beats the hell out of its viewers. It’s an exhausting film, but in a good way. Much as he did in United 93, director Paul Greengrass employs his punishing brand of verisimilitude to immerse the audience in real-life horrors. This time, Greengrass locates his handheld camera 150 miles off of the east African coast, where in April 2009, Somali pirates brazenly commandeered a container ship and took captain Richard Phillips hostage. Tom Hanks plays Phillips, and while his casting may be character shorthand for “decent and dutiful,” Greengrass and screenwriter Billy Ray are after larger spoils. Captain Phillips splits its time between Phillips and his malnourished Somali captor, a violently ambitious pirate played by Barkhad Abdi, who gives one of the most compelling performances of the year. Escape Plan

In Escape Plan, Sylvester Stallone, so painted and stitched together he could be starring as the Scarecrow in The Wiz, plays the world’s leading expert on breaking out of prisons. Companies hire him to pose as a prisoner and stage his own breakouts, but a lucrative assignment to test an off-the-grid superprison turns out to be a setup. Inside, he teams up with a mysterious criminal played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is even more ill-equipped than Stallone to carry as much bad dialogue as the sloppy script forces on him. Schwarzenegger’s character is minor, but an excess of screen time bloats the film to an indulgent two hours and necessitates a barrage of nonsensical third-act plot twists. I don’t know what the opposite of “witty repartee” is, but that seems to be what Stallone and Schwarzenegger were going for in their scenes together. D.B.

The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete

Machete Kills

Robert Rodriguez has now stretched his fake Grindhouse preview about a 1970s-style Mexican vigilante-outlaw-superspy astronaut into two features and more than 200 minutes of film. If nothing else, give Rodriguez credit for squeezing blood from Danny Trejo’s stone face. The first Machete was a too-literal attempt to culturally reappropriate revengeflick tropes, and it could never settle on a flattering tone, while Machete Kills is a full-blown comic book throughout. Scattered among the mayhem are shape-shifter bounty hunters, explosive strap-ons, Cuba Gooding Jr., an inspired riff on Star Wars rip-offs, and a scene where Trejo disposes of a bad guy by pulling out his intestines and flinging them into a spinning helicopter rotor. Unfortunately, Machete Kills clocks in at an indulgent 107 minutes, and Rodriguez and his over-the-top band of players are nearly a half-hour short of ideas. D.B.

A concert producer and former drug dealer (Jeffrey “Ja Rule” Atkins) finds himself in the position described in the title, the church girl in question being played by Adrienne Bailon. It’s pretty much what you’d expect of a movie with a title like that—not to mention one that gives screen credit to God as executive producer (as if he needs the résumé enhancement). It’s essentially a Sunday-school movie like the recent Grace Unplugged, just as preachy but slightly less awkward about it. Atkins gives a smooth and sincere performance, even in the face of writer Galley Molina’s frequently stilted dialogue (Bailon is less adept at navigating the rocky script). Steve Race’s direction is efficiently pedestrian, and cinematographer Keith J. Duggan gives an unexpected gloss to the movie’s San Jose locations. J.L.

Inequality for All

A young boy (Skylan Brooks) has to fend for himself in the Brooklyn projects when his junkie mother (Jennifer Hudson) goes to jail—or rather, he fends for himself and a neighbor kid (Ethan Dizon), whose own mother has gone similarly missing. Written by Michael Starrbury and directed by George Tillman Jr., this low-key, character-driven drama made the festival rounds for most of the year before finally finding limited release. Now, it deserves a wider audience. Starrbury’s script is hazy on showing the passage of time—it’s a surprise to hear how long the boys have been on their own—but deft at revealing telling details. Tillman’s direction is smooth, getting well-nuanced performances from his two young leads. J.L.

I’m in Love With a Church Girl

The Summit

Jacob Kornbluth’s documentary Inequality for All explores the increasing income disparity in America, taking a cheeky tone and glorified PowerPoint approach that is colorful but tired. Fortunately, Kornbluth has an energetic and likable central figure in Robert Reich, the diminutive, longtime friend of former President Bill Clinton and the former labor secretary in his cabinet. Reich is predominantly an author and lecturer now, and the film is structured around his UC Berkeley class on wealth and poverty (cut to students nodding serenely at Reich’s every word), while also wading delicately into his personal life. The film is not immune to the straw-man arguments endemic to advocacy documentaries, and occasionally employs clips from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart in place of salient points. Despite the blatant advocacy and hackneyed approach, though, Inequality for All pulls up the roots of an issue that should transcend political ideology. D.B.

Two astronauts (Sandra Bullock, George Clooney) are stranded in space when a debris storm demolishes their space shuttle and wipes out the rest of the crew. Director Alfonso Cuarón, who co-wrote the script with his son Jonás Cuarón, has crafted one of the great white-knuckle thrillers of all time—as airtight as the pressure suits the astronauts wear, without a wasted syllable and just enough featherlight touches to keep the tension from becoming entirely unbearable. Despite Clooney’s presence, it’s a virtual one-woman show for Bullock, and she’s as brilliant as the movie itself, showing the panic, despair, hope and hopelessness in her character’s struggle to survive. The story is so riveting that Cuarón’s virtuosic touches go almost unnoticed, but they’re there, with stunning visual effects to boot. J.L.

Documentarians Mark Monroe (writer) and Nick Ryan (director) chronicle (and recreate) the August 2008 Himalayan disaster in which 11 mountaineers died on the slopes of K2, the second-highest mountain in the world, and, in some ways, more dangerous than Mount Everest (victims came from France, Ireland, Nepal, Norway, Pakistan, Serbia and South Korea). Ryan and Monroe seamlessly combine the climbers’ own video footage, reenactments, and interviews with survivors of the international expeditions, showing the inevitable contradictions that crop up in the recollections of mountain climbers in an oxygen-deprived crisis. The movie’s very seamlessness is a trifle unsettling at times, as it’s not always easy to tell what is authentic and what is staged. But it hardly matters in the end: The movie is harrowing. J.L.

This deadly dull story of the whistleblowing WikiLeaks website and its enigmatic founder Julian Assange is the worst movie of the year so far. It’s the cinematic equivalent of sitting through a two-hour long media-ethics class taught by a condescending pedant with no knowledge of the subject. The Fifth Estate will likely become notorious for its vapid attempts to “visualize” concepts like chat rooms and data encryption, but I found the smug social-studies dialogue infinitely more infuriating (actual line from a film set in the 21st century: “I thought Americans put free speech up there with Mom and apple pie.”). Benedict Cumberbatch bears a striking resemblance to the angular, blond Assange, and does a solid impression of his nasally Australian accent. It was probably inevitable that Cumberbatch would play Assange in a movie—it’s just too bad this is the one he made. D.B.

The Patience Stone

In a war-torn Afghan village, a wife (Golshifteh Farahani) nurses her wounded, comatose husband. As she does, she speaks freely to his unhearing ears, telling long-hidden things, as if he were the legendary Patience Stone that absorbs one’s deepest secrets.

Director Atiq Rahimi adapts his own novel, from a script by the prolific and versatile Jean-Claude Carrière. The result has much going for it—an understated yet fervent glimpse of a society on the brink of collapse, as well as a startling sexual frankness (in both action and dialogue) for a movie set in a Muslim society. Most of all, it has Farahani, and she’s a striking screen presence, whether delivering her long, halting monologues, striding out with her mustard-colored hijab billowing in the wind, or unveiling an enigmatic smile in the final shot. Romeo & Juliet

William Shakespeare’s tragedy of starcrossed love gets a thorough dumbingdown from writer Julian Fellowes and director Carlo Carlei, evidently to cash in on the dimwits in the moviegoing audience. Where the Bard wrote poetry, Fellowes purveys doggerel, laced with clichés that were old even in Shakespeare’s day (which may be why he didn’t write them).

Carlei is out of his depth, as are the Romeo and Juliet of Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld.

Booth is a pretty but empty face, Steinfeld flounders, and both are lackluster and halting, looking vaguely embarrassed by all this flowery language. The supporting cast does better—Paul Giamatti’s conniving Friar Laurence, Lesley Manville’s featherheaded Nurse, Stellan Skarsgård’s stately Prince—even as they contend with the worst of Fellowes’ clumsy paraphrasing. The Snitch Cartel

A Colombian drug trafficker (Manolo Cardona) climbs the ladder of success in the bloody cocaine business, until the love of a good woman (Juana Acosta) makes him want to forsake his life of crime—only to find that it was easier to get into than it is to get out of.

Loosely based on the real-life Norte del Valle Cartel, this mostly Spanish-language movie has the air of a Scarface wannabe, but without the charisma of Al Pacino, the visual flair of Brian De Palma, or even the brute energy of the earlier picture’s writer, Oliver Stone. Instead, director Carlos Moreno substitutes the sun-faded look of a low-budget TV telenovela, punctuated with the spattering gunplay of a 1960s spaghetti Western. Originally made and released in 2011, it’s only now hitting theaters, having already been released on DVD. J.L.

Andrew Barnhart never intended to start a solo project, yet that’s how Saint Solitaire began. The singersongwriter was so full of ideas, he recorded by Aaron Carnes Saint Solitaire’s debut electro-pop EP Full Artistic Control by himself—save for a piano part on one track.

In stark contrast to the music he now makes with Saint Solitaire, Barnhart spent his early musical years in No Avail, a band that worshipped at the altar of Blink-182.

Barnhart attributes his limited taste as a teen to growing up in a religious family.

“The first album I ever bought was [by] Third Eye Blind—and I loved it, but my dad took it away ’cause of the [drug-related] lyrics,” Barnhart says.

And so, like many teens, he turned to his peers.

“A bunch of my friends, they’d been listening to Christian pop-rock bands, MxPx, stuff like that. It was all I had,” he says.

Barnhart’s life changed, however, after he graduated from El Camino Fundamental High School in 2003, made new friends and found himself exposed to music he’d never heard before, namely Radiohead, the Mars Volta and Deerhunter.

“I didn’t want to write what I’d been writing anymore,” Barnhart says.

And the more music Barnhart was exposed to, the more he wanted to hear. Now, in addition to Saint Solitaire, he’s currently in three other bands, including a gig playing bass for local singer-songwriter James Cavern.

Barnhart says he enjoys the different turns his music takes these days.

“I really like stuff like the Gorillaz, [where] you’re kind of hearing something different from song to song. I just like to be influenced by [it] all,” he says.

By the time Control was finished, however, Barnhart had put together a full band for his release show. And that, he says, made all the difference.

“I know what it’s like to have a band with a leader and hired guns compared to a band that has contributing members,” Barnhart says. “I’ve always preferred the latter.”

Currently, Saint Solitaire’s lineup includes Peter Miller on guitar, James Murphy on bass, Dave Jensen on drums, Richie Smith on keyboard and, in the role of deejay, Chris Karriker.

Putting that band together, however, proved tricky. Barnhart didn’t just have an EP already recorded, he also had two additional ones of which he’d made demo recordings. The songs were ready to be recorded in full, but Barnhart wanted the new band’s input. While the first EP’s music consisted of electronic indie pop, the demos for the upcoming recordings are a little different. The band plans to record the second EP in November, with a tentative release set for December. For now, the members of Saint Solitaire are tasked with figuring out how to transcribe Barnhart’s demos into full band compositions.

Barnhart’s own music reflects this approach.

On the surface, Saint Solitaire’s debut EP sounds like a pop-friendly indie-rock album packed with catchy hooks, but there is also no shortage of electronic sounds and drum machines to add nuance. Throughout, Barnhart mixes in guitars, synthesizers, drums and drum machines. The result is a sound with one foot rooted in rock and the other in electronic.

“You can do anything you want,” Barnhart says of his musical philosophy. “You don’t necessarily have to follow the one-genre rule.” Ω

Time-lapse melodies: Dustin Wong approached the stage at Luigi’s Fun Garden late on the night of October 17, his chair and guitar surrounded by a carefully linked half-moon of effect pedals. The former member of the Baltimore art-rock band Ponytail has earned a favorable reputation for the type of performance that was in store that night, departing from the noise pop of his past in favor of dense soundscapes so full of tension and momentum, it hardly seemed to come from such a tidy and efficient display.

After a show-opening set by Sacramento’s similarly ambitious Biosexual, Wong took the stage with Japanese collaborator Takako Minekawa, with whom he released Toropical Circle earlier this year.

Building on a layer of rhythms and distorted sounds, Wong made a show of technical riffs so sly, his fingers hardly stopped long enough to touch the strings, his picking hand existing only as a blur of movement. The prestidigitations continued, adding layer over layer until, at the peak of each song’s volume and density, it was wiped away leaving only the riff of the next song.

As each song bled into the next, Wong’s music seemed like the stuff of time-lapse nature films, its endless flow of pedestrians and cars moving, like the notes, in a ballet of unconsciously coordinated movements.

An artist in her own right, Minekawa shyly greeted the enthusiastic audience in a barely audible and heavily accented whisper. Her music though, played alongside Wong, is humorous, joyful and confident in its intent. With Wong mostly on guitar and Minekawa’s airy voice, the duo relied heavily on a Korg keyboard that allowed them to turn sound samples into notes. The pair’s songs often feature “chords” of what sound like tapping on glass windows or other distorted yet strangely familiar noises.

Together, they seem to be making music out of the very world around them, reminding listeners that music is in everything, if only you listen for it.

When most bands harken back to traditional folk music, they pull from the 1940s or 1950s, when groups of men plucked ROCK old-timey string instruments and sang four-part harmonies.

Nevada City’s Lasher Keen goes all the way back to medieval times—harkening back to the folk music of traveling minstrels. Its music is not completely steeped in centuries past, however. There’s also a heavy psychedelic vibe going on—a weird combination of pagan-folk and Summer of Love acid rock. Plus, it brings a vibrant show to the stage, complete with spooky, ancientlooking costumes; archaic instruments; and a performance combining rock show, theater and a cult séance. 1815 19th Street, www.lasherkeen.net.

Rusted Root blends rootsy folk and rhythmic world-music jams exploring the sweet spot between Paul Simon’s Graceland and progressive rock, à la Umphrey’s McGee. While it is groove oriented, the multipercussionist Pittsburgh group doesn’t skimp on hooks or warm multipart coed harmonies.

After enjoying college-radio success in the mid-1990s and a failed pop-crossover bid (2002’s Welcome to My Party), it returned to its quirky world-rock roots on the last two releases. Last year’s The Movement neatly balances its pop ROCK/WORLD and groove impulses—such as the folksy jangle of “Fortunate Freaks”; the Afro-funk of “Cover Me Up”; and the nimble, percussive alt pop of the title track. 2708 J Street, www.rustedroot.com.

Ace of Spades, 6:30 p.m., $15 Yes, Jonny Craig is flawed. The Sacramento singer who has left Dance Gavin Dance twice has long been battling drug addiction. In 2011, he scammed thousands of dollars from people via Twitter by claiming to be selling used laptops. Craig admitted to the fraud R&B/POP and has since paid everyone back. The singer is also now clean—according to a video he recently posted on his Facebook page—which is great, because he has an amazing voice.

His latest EP, Find What You Love and Let it Kill You (named after a Charles Bukowski quote), feels like a soulful, gutsy confessional that blends R&B, pop, and hip-hop.

This dynamic quartet recently released several music videos, appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and joined an all-star lineup in New York City performing music from the film Inside Llewyn Davis. Old-school foodies Sacramento is fast becoming a scene for dining enthusiasts, with what seems like a constant influx of ambitious chefs and an intense focus on the region’s own harvest. But even with a whole lot of self-proclaimed foodies and elite Yelpers running around, it’s hard to imagine anyone who knows the city’s culinary history better than siblings Maryellen and Keith Burns, co-authors of Lost Restaurants of Sacramento and Their Recipes (The History Press, $19.99). Raised in the New Helvetia housing projects off Broadway and later, in the Tallac Village neighborhood, the siblings experienced the culinary bounty of the city’s ethnically diverse communities at a young age, instilling in them a lifelong fascination with food and its connection to culture. Now in its fourth printing, the book has been a surprise hit among locals curious about Sacramento’s rich restaurant history. The pair sat down with SN&R recently to talk oysters, Jimboy’s Tacos, their next project and misbehaving politicians dining out.

You grew up in the 1950s. What role did food have in your childhood?

Keith Burns: When our father was growing up, he was basically on his own [from the age of 8]. He ate whatever was handed to him. When he had kids of his own, he made sure we ate well. … [He] had a job where he wasn’t in the office, so he was basically the cook. And we went to restaurants almost every week— Maryellen Burns: Which, I have to say, was very unusual when we were growing up.

Restaurants were for special occasions.

Why do you think food stuck with you the rest of your life?

Keith: Food is one of those universal events. Everyone eats. They may not drink water—the French drink wine—but everybody eats. Sacramento is interesting in that when people came here, they brought their food with them. … If you look down on anybody, or don’t like a [group of people], you miss a hell of a lot of good food.

Maryellen: We grew up in a very multiethnic neighborhood. And because of the way my father grew up, he wanted to make sure we would eat anything. We ate chocolatecovered ants! ... We actually started cooking at a very young age, because we thought our parents were bad cooks.

What lost restaurant do you miss most?

Keith: The Market Club. In my memory, it was the perfect weird restaurant. Run by a weird little Japanese gentleman [and built in 1933].

Maryellen: One day, there was fried chicken that was just the best. Tuesdays, [it served] short ribs that fell off the bone. Thursdays, corned beef and |

cabbage. Sundays, you could get fried rice with egg on top.

Keith: It was such a mixture of people. …

I like eating in an atmosphere. It’s not just the food. I’d rather eat in a weird atmosphere, and if the food is not that great, OK, that’s fine. If you can find cheap food, that’s great!

[But] now, chefs have become the stars of the show. Some of the restaurants are forcing the unusualness.

Sacramento once had quite the oyster legacy.

They’re popular still, but more expensive.

What’s the future of the oyster here?

Maryellen: It’s really expensive. You almost can’t afford it. … The taste has also changed. They used to be cooked, stewed, put in pies. Now, they’re pretty much only served on the half shell. It has gone from being poor-people’s food to being a delicacy and an elite-person’s food. [I think] market demand is keeping the price high.

Your book details a Sacramento dish called the Hangtown Fry, a dish of cooked oysters, eggs and bacon.

Any chance it makes a comeback?

Maryellen: (Laughs.) No! It’s a simple dish.

But I think it’s an acquired taste.

Keith: No. I tried it once. No. Maryellen: (Laughs.) Yes. I still do! How anyone could pick Taco Bell over Jimboy’s, I don’t understand. But, having said that, there are so many incredible little taco spots now.

The quality of Mexican food is so much higher now than what we [used to] get.

Next project?

Maryellen: We’re working on a proposal for a book that is tentatively titled Coming of Age: Sacramento’s Restaurant Renaissance that takes you from 1970 to the current restaurant scene. It’ll allow us to talk about the chefs that have influenced the city and all the new tastes.

There’s mention of anecdotes about politicians and local celebrities patronizing certain restaurants that were too risqué for the book. Are they too risqué for an alternative-news weekly?

Maryellen: (Laughs.) I will just put it this way: A lot of restaurants closed because of drugs, and some are still open because of drugs.

Keith: We will not mention any names!

But a few were kept going by men in high positions of business and government being entertained by young women in back rooms.

Maryellen: I don’t think we have prostitution in restaurants now like we did back then.

Keith: But then, the argument is: Bills were passed! Stuff got done! Ω
