But, seriously Sometimes we get it wrong. Really, really wrong.

Last week, SN&R anounced the nominees for its Best of Sacramento 2013 contest. The list was made public July 11, and by the end of the day, we’d already heard from people in the community about just how badly we’d screwed up the best comedian category.

Not only did the list—as chosen by our editorial board—include a handful of comedians who’d either moved or who no longer actively performed in Sacramento, it also didn’t feature any women.

Just to be clear: Not. One. Single. Woman.

The oversight would be almost comical if it wasn’t so damn egregious.

Surely, SN&R doesn’t fall into the Christopher Hitchens/Adam Carolla/ Jerry Lewis camp of people who claim women aren’t funny, does it?

No, no, a million times no.

We could respond with myriad excuses, but truthfully, there are none worthy.

Instead, we offer up an apology—and an amended ballot. After polling readers on Facebook as well as soliciting opinions from some of Sacramento’s established comedians, we’ve made some changes. The revised list won’t please everyone (that’s an impossible task, of course), but we do believe it’s a step: a better, more diverse representation of area comics.

Still don’t like what you see? Please add a name via the ballot’s write-in category. That goes for nominees in all the Best of categories.

Each year, we strive to improve the Best of issue—to mix it up, make it fresh, make sure that it represents Sacramento as a whole. (Winners, by the way, will be revealed September 12, online and in our print edition). It’s a daunting task, sure, but we rely on our readers to keep us in the know, and to keep us honest.

Who’s responsible for the American Dream denied?

Re “This is your American Dream” by Sasha Abramsky (SN&R Feature Story, July 11): This tells the story of a handful of people who have been damaged by the economy, but does not address the larger issue of who created this situation and who should be prosecuted and imprisoned. Tens of thousands of people in the Sacramento metro area have been left underunemployed [or] unemployed, homeless, or destitute, and, a few, suicidal. Your article mentions a range of people in their mid 40s to 60s, who are now in desperate situations.

I represent a group of skilled, experienced professionals in this letter of demographic that the week have lost marriages, homes and their lifetime savings as a direct result of the corruption and greed by our government, banks (the [Federal Reserve]), lawyers, HMO and drug companies, and big business. I have watched competent, hardworking, decent people who contributed to society for decades lose everything they worked for (including myself). Your articles

should directly investigate and name those responsible, including the state Legislature, the U.S. Congress and the executive branch, and demand restitution to the citizens who entrusted them to act in our best interests.

It’s not about stopping the arena Re “Playing to vote” by Cosmo Garvin (SN&R Bites, July 4): The effort under way to put the city of Sacramento’s arena contribution on the ballot is not to “stop the arena,” but to empower voters with the option to decide whether they want hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to go toward the construction of a new arena.

Recent polling shows 80 percent of Sacramento’s voters want to vote on this issue. From the Sunday downtown farmers market to the 41st Street Fourth of July parade, thousands of people have signed petitions demanding a vote.

The lack of transparency of our city government warrants a public vote. The city held public workshops on the term sheet before it was released. Subsequently, the term sheet was released on a holiday weekend, only three days before it was

voted on by the city council. That’s three days to vet a project that will cost hundreds of millions of dollars and put Sacramento in further debt for decades.

The term sheet underestimates the city’s contribution while pulling revenues out of thin air. Along with shaky numbers, the city council gifted itself an $8 million arena luxury box with free parking. California’s constitution gave its voters the initiative to curb these kinds of actions by elected officials.

Why only public employees?

Re “This is your American Dream” by Sasha Abramsky (SN&R Feature Story, July 11): I find it fascinating that the author of the story decided to highlight the certainly hard plights of two individuals who lost jobs in the government and nonprofit sectors during the economic downturn of the last few years and not talk about, except in passing, the day-to-day struggles of the working and nonworking poor of Sacramento.

I know from personal experience over the years that there are going to be periods of time when you are riding high and making good money, and there are going

to be times you are facing unemployment, with little or no money coming in. The idea for survival is to find any type of work you can and move up as the economy and your hard work allow. ...

I have worked as a volunteer with many nonprofit groups over the years and have been a member of the board of directors of some of them. What always struck me was that as much as these organizations talked about getting off the teat of government funding [and] grants, most did not make hard efforts to find alternative private funding sources or work to develop individual donors.

As for government work, there has been a back-and-forth tussle over the years between those who believe that government is there to be “everything for everyone” and those who believe that government should be there to serve only certain societal needs and goals. Even in times of recession, there are those who seem to think that government jobs are forever. That, unlike the private sector, government should maintain the status quo or grow in size and not adjust to meet economic realities.

It is obvious from the story in the July 11 edition of SN&R and others in previous editions where the views of the ownership and staff of the paper lie.

In target practice, the Spanish term for the bull’s-eye is el blanco. But according to by former employees at a Target warehouse Dave Kempa in nearby Woodland, it was the Latinos who were consistently in the supervisors’ d a ve k@ news r evie w.c om crosshairs.

The multibillion-dollar superstore corporation made national headlines last week when a wrongful termination, discrimination and harassment suit came to light that included, as evidence, a company document riddled with racist undertones.

While that document certainly plays a role in the case, it portrays just one dimension of the unfriendly, racially tiered work environment, as described by the three Hispanic plaintiffs.

According to the lawsuit, Robert N. Gonzalez, Fabian Bulmaro and Pedro Garcia-Ayala regularly dealt with racially charged comments from warehouse supervisors—such as, “What the hell?

I’m already sweating like a Mexican,” and “Only a ‘wetback’ can work this hard”—while working in Target Corporation’s Woodland distribution warehouse.

“It was directed straight toward me,” said Gonzalez, 59, of the times he heard others speaking like that. “They would look straight at me and just laugh.

“It was humiliating.”

Independent reporting for this story is funded by a grant from Sacramento Emergency Foodlink.

Gonzalez had been working at Target for seven years when, in 2011, he started to speak up.

“Every time I felt like it was out of hand, I’d go to human resources,” he said. “They’d take notes and say, ‘OK, just get back to work, and I’ll check into this.’”

But they never checked into it, he says, and his treatment grew worse.

According to the lawsuit, Gonzalez’s “supervisors became more hostile and abusive” toward him, with one manager “using more racial epithets when instructing [him] on his work” and “purposefully [throwing] boxes on the ground and then [ordering] Gonzalez to pick them up in an attempt to humiliate [him] amongst his colleagues.”

Three former Target employees claim racial discrimination, humiliation—and have the paperwork to prove it

A lawsuit filed by three Sacramento-area former Target employees, who are suing the company over wrongful termination and harassment, went viral online last week.

Minnesota, to talk about his treatment.

But the lawsuit says that, again, the reports went uninvestigated.

Target fired Gonzalez in May 2011—just five months after his initial complaint—citing performance reasons, and Fabian and Garcia-Ayala were out the door within the next 15 months. All three men believe their terminations were based on being “Hispanic, Mexican” employees, as stated in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit describes a workplace in which the Mexican-American plaintiffs “were expected to work harder than their Caucasian counterparts and were not given the same overtime opportunities throughout the terms of their employment.”

“From our perspective, it possibly shows that there was some type of dual system going on,” said Ilija Cvetich, whose law firm is representing Gonzalez and his former colleagues.

That’s not much of a stretch, given a racially charged document, distributed to warehouse managers, that gives tips on how to deal with Hispanic employees.

Excerpts from this document went viral online this past week.

Titled “Organization Effectiveness, Employee and Labor Relations MultiCultural Tips,” it explains that not all Hispanics “eat tacos and burritos” or wear sombreros. It goes on to discern Mexicans from other Hispanic communities with the description “Mexicans (lower education level, some may be undocumented).”

In a section on building Hispanic employees’ trust, the document says that Hispanics are “very loyal to those whom they have grown to trust,” and advises that “[for] Hispanics, family is the highest priority, everything else, including work, is secondary.” “[L]ook for ways to take advantage of these strong familial tendencies as a source of motivation in the workplace.”

Most of this document appears to come, often verbatim, from an 11-year-old report funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service’s Wood Education and Resource Center in Princeton, W.Va., and written by a group called Holladay Management Services Inc., which seems to have dissolved.

Though not as racially charged as the Target document, this report also has its

moments, including a portion on the value of generalizing when discussing Hispanic cultures, which states, “The use of generalization is a valuable tool in helping us to better understand and predict the behaviors of a group of people.”

“When that paper came into our hands—wow,” said Gonzalez of the Target document. “How I felt, what I went through, it all backed up my suspicions.”

Target representative Molly Snyder sent SN&R an email apology. “This document, which was used during an isolated conversation about diversity, was never part of any formal or company-wide training and was a mistake. We are sorry.” She did not respond to follow-up questions.

Beyond voicing surprise in finding that Target acknowledged that the document was real, Cvetich said that there’s little else to say on the case at the moment. His firm isn’t scheduled to meet Target in Yolo County court until mid-October, so national attention is expected to wane.

Gonzalez wouldn’t mind that.

“It was a simple step that we had to take—just talk to an attorney. But somehow, it exploded into what it is,” Gonzalez said. “It’s overwhelming.”

The three men are suing Target Corporation for an undisclosed amount.

When asked by others about the monetary implications of taking on the big-box chain (which raked in an estimated $73.3 billion in 2013 revenue), Gonzalez doesn’t take the bait.

“We suffered there,” he said. “It’s about more than the money.” Ω

Justice denied The Man scored a huge victory Saturday when a Florida jury cleared wannabe enforcer George Zimmerman of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the February 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Yet another ignoble travesty for minority groups, it was proof that discrimination is so ingrained in society that it blinds us to the color of tragedy. Those who crowed about the verdict, like Ann Coulter, seemed oblivious they were celebrating the death of an unarmed kid who was stalked on his way home by a scary-looking dude in a car. White guilt may be awful, but at least we’re alive to experience it. Martin will never have that privilege.

The judge is weighing testimony from the plaintiffs’ expert witness in deciding whether to grant a temporary injunction against the closures this week.

The parking lot on 15th Street between J and K streets says you can buy a $5 pass for a handful of hours, but that’s only if you have exact change. Put in more money, and you lose it. Nearly 20 percent of California’s prison population refusing food in protest of state’s solitary confinement policy Daletha Hayden hasn’t hugged her son in four years. Since 2009, the only face-toface contact they’ve had has been by George Lavender through thick glass. Even phone calls are not allowed in Tehachapi state prison’s isolation unit. Despite the separation, she said she has seen the effect solitary confinement has had on him. “He has these bouts of depression,” the mom said. “It breaks my heart to see him go through those changes.”

prison). “It’s so unfortunate that our society has to have people become injured, ill or die to make a point that should already be understood: This is torture,” she said of long-term solitary confinement.

In 2011, a United Nations special rapporteur on torture, Juan E. Méndez, told U.N. member countries that solitary confinement beyond 15 days was a human-rights abuse and should be stopped. “Segregation, isolation, separation, cellular, lockdown, Supermax, the hole, Secure Housing Unit... whatever the name, solitary confinement should be banned by [the] States as a punishment or extortion technique,” he advised.

According to Amnesty International in 2011, 500 people had been held for 10 years or more in the isolation unit of Pelican Bay State Prison, known as the Security Housing Unit, or SHU. Two-hundred of those prisoners had been in SHU for more than 15 years and 78 for more than 20 years.

SHU prisoners at Pelican Bay have called themselves “the buried class,” likening their 8-by-10-foot windowless cells to tombs. Most SHU prisoners are confined to their cells for between 22-and-a-half and 24 hours a day. Hayden said that her son and other prisoners have chosen to starve themselves in protest because “they would rather give their lives up than to continue to suffer like this.”

California Secretary of Corrections Jeffrey A. Beard acknowledged that inmates in places like Pelican Bay’s SHU are in “rather austere conditions.” But he denied that the practice amounts to torture.

He said SHU prisoners can still communicate with corrections staff and each other. “It’s not like the old days, when there was a hole in the ground somewhere and you could never talk to anybody,” he said.

Although Beard also acknowledged that the isolation units are not “a good place to put people,” he insisted that they are necessary, because “there are certain people

strike to demand an end to long-term solitary confinement. Four prisoner representatives in Pelican Bay State Prison, located near the CaliforniaOregon border, issued a statement last month calling for the strike and work stoppage to begin on July 8.

Describing themselves as being “out of alternative options for achieving the long overdue reform to this system and, specifically, an end to state-sanctioned torture,” they have vowed to refuse food until the state meets their demands—“the heart of which mandates an end to long-term solitary confinement.”

Last week, California prison officials said about 30,000 inmates statewide refused to eat breakfast and lunch, and 2,300 did not go to work or attend classes.

One of the main reasons prisoners are locked up in SHU is if they are classified as a gang member or associate gang member. Prisoners say that for those sent to the units for indefinite terms, the only way out is to “debrief, parole, or die.”

“Debriefing” means informing on other prisoners, something many prisoners can’t or won’t do, either out of concern for their own safety, the well-being of others or because they simply don’t have the information.

There have been hearings on the use of isolation in Sacramento.

The first hunger strike in 2011 lasted almost a month, and it brought the issue of long-term solitary confinement to state and national attention. Since then, there have been hearings on the use of isolation in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. In October 2012, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation began a review of every inmate held in isolation. So far, the state says it has reviewed 382 cases and moved 208 prisoners back into the general population.

Despite these changes and others, such as the newfound right of SHU inmates to have a calendar in their cells, prisoners inside Pelican Bay maintain their demands have not been met.

Prisoners’ advocates say they are concerned that striking inmates may starve to death. In 2011, demonstrators in Sacramento chanted to the then-secretary of the CDCR, “Matthew Cate, negotiate!” But Cate’s advice for his successor is: “Do what you think is right, and if the inmates don’t want to eat, then they don’t eat.” For his part, Beard said that a hunger strike is “really not going to get them anything,” and insisted there will be no negotiation.

“We’re not asking them to negotiate with us,” said Daletha Hayden.

Local art gets hella expensive The Sacramento City Council was poised Tuesday to eat a $7.5 million loan to the Crocker Art Museum in return for a couple parking lots with an arena-set expiration date.

The struggling museum has mustered interest payments on a series of bridge loans totaling $15 million. Under an arrangement dreamed up by councilmen Jay Schenirer and Steve Hansen, the Crocker has roughly four years to pay off one of those $5 million loans. As to the remainder, the museum is expected to return $2.5 million into its own endowment fund to ensure future sustainability, Schenirer said on May 7. The rest will be forgiven.

In return, Schenirer added, the city will take control of two parking lots and whatever “relatively small” revenues they bring in until construction of an entertainment and sports arena complex begins.

Eye on Sacramento president Craig Powell expressed concern that the city was undervaluing the parcels it will eventually give to arena developers, saying the city’s intent was to “mislead the public as to the true amount of the taxpayer subsidy of the proposed arena.”

The lots are valued at $400,000.

Despite boasting a quarter-million annual visits—51st in the nation—the Crocker plummets to 136th place in endowments, collecting $250,000 a year in a city that has more nonprofits and gives less to them than the national average, said museum director Lial Jones.

In the meantime, the 128-year-old museum, which expanded in October 2010, has an $8.2 million annual budget it’s struggling to keep apace with.

Typically anti-subsidy groups like the Sacramento Taxpayers Association and Eye on Sacramento, both of which oppose publicly funding an arena, declined to stake out positions on the issue. Powell called the Crocker “an important civic asset worthy of support.” (Raheem F. Hosseini)

Rafting gone dry Some 2,000 to 3,000 area drinking, fighting and rafting enthusiasts, faced with an emergency alcohol ban, crowded the American River for a “secret” Rafting Gone Wild celebration on Saturday, July 13, and behaved as boorishly as expected.

Almost two-dozen people were arrested. Citations were written. The cops—ever the poopers of parties—confiscated their share of booze.

With attendance down by about a third from last year— mostly due to the booze prohibition announced days earlier by Sacramento County park officials—law enforcement reported a quieter celebration. After the event, one rafter deemed the social-media driven river party “weak as F*** this year huh.”

The Sacramento Bee’s publisher and president, Cheryl Dell, announced on Monday what many already knew was coming: furloughs. Specifically, a majority of full-time Hive staffers will need to take a one-week, unpaid furlough by November 24.

Losing a week’s pay stinks, for sure. But fear not, Bee employees: McClatchy Co. has a plan for how to recoup that lost dough. Sources at the Bee told SN&R that, in a packet distributed to all staff, employees were given the option of taking out a loan as a way to make up for the lost income.

Bites on public and political websites, repurposing closed schools and anti-signature-gathering thuggery

Bites recently spoke to Councilman Jay Schenirer for another story. Talk turned to the school closures that have affected the city’s low-income neighborhoods. Three of the seven schools closed by the Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education Trustees are in Schenirer’s council turf.

He mentioned that he’d been “actively working” with certain organizations to repurpose at least one of the schools.

“Charter school organizations?” Bites asked, not too subtly. No, he said, but wouldn’t reveal more, other than to say it “wouldn’t upset anybody in the education community.”

Maybe so. But the thing is, it’s not really Schenirer’s, or any politician’s, job to decide what happens with those schools.

Sacramento Taxpayers Opposed to Pork have a little more than 19,000 signatures collected in its effort to put any public subsidies for a new Sacramento Kings arena to a public vote.

We’ll have to take its word for it, at least until it actually turns in the 35,000 or so signatures it needs. But those numbers have Region Builders and other arena boosters a little freaked.

Last week, Region Builders said it was launching a new “education” campaign to stop STOP, a campaign that basically consists of harassing signature gatherers. “Help us track down anti-arena petition gatherers. Tweet their location,” Region Builders exhorted followers on its Twitter feed.

What could possibly go wrong?

Region Builders seem to have assumed the role of business enforcers. It has carried a club for Walmart, leading the effort to ditch the local big-box ordinance. It has tried to muzzle staff at Sacramento Area Council of Governments and prevent them from speaking up about development projects that violate regional-growth plans.

Now this bit of thuggery. It’s not new, really.

Political groups of various stripes sometimes show up to counterpropagandize when they want to slow down the other team’s petition progress.

Bites isn’t so worried the arena believers will succeed in derailing the signature drive. It’s just that they have an awfully high proportion of excitable bros among their ranks. The idea that a few will show up at the neighborhood grocery to “educate” the little old lady with the clipboard just doesn’t sit well. Keep an eye out. Ω ARTS&CULTURE

The school board was supposed to form a citizen committee to make recommendations on what schools, if any, ought to be closed. It refused to do that. But it was forced by state law to appoint a citizen “repurposing committee” to decide what to do with the schools once the decision to close them had been made. That way, in theory at least, the reuse of these important public properties can be decided in public, by members of the public, with public input.

But now we’ve got Schenirer and probably other politicians running around trying to cut deals. Before the citizen committee has even held its first meeting. Which is exactly the sort of thing that got us into the school-closure mess to begin with.

Regular readers know that Bites is no fan of the constant, low-grade misuse and abuse of public resources that goes on at Sacramento City Hall. It’s corrosive. Like when people don’t use their turn signals.

This week, it’s city council websites.

The latter site was created in 2010 as part of Ashby’s campaign for city council.

It’s easy to tell. The main page is full of links to official District 1 press releases and photos. But with one click, you’re deep into the electioneering stuff, reading the candidate’s “campaign vision” or scrolling through her lists of political endorsements.

As Phillip Ung of Common Cause noted, “There’s a lack of a line drawn between the campaign and the council website.” While visitors to her official city site are told that clicking certain links will take them “outside of the City of Sacramento’s main web page,” they aren’t told they are being taken to a campaign site. And much of the information, like Ashby’s district press releases or photos or district news and events, can only be viewed by clicking through to the campaign site.

The U.S. Congress prohibits this sort of blending of public and political websites: The rule is that legislator websites “[m]ay not be directly linked or refer to websites created or operated by a campaign or any campaign-related entity.”

The reasons for this restriction should be obvious to any lawmaker, including Ashby. But there’s apparently no local rule against it. Such blurring of the lines is not illegal for California state legislators, either. “But they do so less and less at the state, because we keep calling them on it,” Ung said.

On the rise and fall (and rise and fall, again) Of an Original sacramentO suburb

South Sacramento’s 47th Avenue light-rail station is going to waste.

Passengers get off the train and are greeted by a high fence and an idled Campbell Soup Company plant. Across the parking lot and street are industrial buildings and truck fleets.

Kitty-corner from those, another warehouse and a big, empty lot. Not the kind of land use you want if you’re going to take take full advantage of a high-end piece of transit infrastructure like light rail.

Leaving the station, travelers have a long walk before they get to anywhere in particular.

Some nearby stretches of Franklin Boulevard don’t even have sidewalks. The one bus line that used to feed the 47th Avenue station was eliminated, due to budget cuts, in 2010. The bus stop is stenciled over with the words “No bus.”

“You’re kind of stuck,” says Tong Thao, a government-studies student who attends Sacramento State University. Thao grew up not far from here, in the south Sacramento neighborhood of Parkway. North of the station and the Campbell plant, the area is called City Farms, or just Franklin Boulevard. “Some of those neighborhoods are not the best to walk through,” he says.

You don’t have to be an academic to see that the neighborhood doesn’t function as well as it ought to. Franklin Boulevard is like a lot of old suburbs: overlooked and underplanned, while money flows into building on the suburban fringe or into favored downtown areas, like 14 | SN&R | 07.18.13

Sacramento’s heavily subsidized entertainment district, “The Kay.” “When you don’t invest in a neighborhood, that’s when it really starts declining,” says Jesus Hernandez, a sociologist at UC Davis.

Franklin’s got some of the highest crime rates in Sacramento County. It was once named “the ugliest street” in Sacramento.

Contrast Franklin Boulevard and 47th Avenue to the new Township Nine at the River District development and its light-rail station north of downtown Sacramento, planned to anchor a mixed-use cluster of homes, offices and shops. Or the Iron Point Road light-rail station in Folsom, which connects riders to a bustling retail district, bike trail and greenbelt.

“This is the difference between planning in south Sacramento or planning in Folsom,” says Hernandez, waving toward the moonscape of the Campbell Soup plant’s yard. “Here you have this infrastructure gem that really has no connection to the neighborhood,” says Hernandez.

For 20 years, Franklin was a redevelopment area. There was considerable progress, but most of the money promised from redevelopment never materialized.

Now, Hernandez has teamed up with Marti Brown, executive director of the North Franklin District Business Association, in trying to craft a community plan to “reboot” and “reconnect” the neighborhood—in the post-redevelopment era.

“We’re trying to revitalize the area, in terms of economic development and in terms of transit-oriented development, making the urban design and streetscape more pedestrian friendly and more business friendly for everyone,” says Brown.

“And there’s no redevelopment anymore to pay for it.”

Main Street, USA, disconnected This story could probably be about any neighborhood in south Sacramento, or any neighborhood in north Sacramento, or similar places in any other California city. The patterns are the same.

Franklin Boulevard gets its name from the town it used to connect to, Franklin, now just a divot on the edge of the sprawl city of Elk Grove. The north end of Franklin intersects with Sacramento’s central-city grid at Broadway.

It was, for many years, a major commercial corridor, anchored by the Campbell Soup plant, whose workforce shopped in its stores and sent their kids to neighborhood schools.

In the 1960s came the construction of Highway 99, and if even you don’t know exactly what happened to Franklin Boulevard then, you probably know what happened to a lot of places like it.

“With the primary transportation flow diverted to the new freeway, Franklin Boulevard was bypassed by new commercial development and gradually deteriorated”—that’s from a short history of the strip in the revitalization plan put together by the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency.

Around the country, the highway building boom of the 1950s and ’60s chopped neighborhoods in half (in this case, City Farms and Oak Park), fueled the growth of outer-ring suburbs, and left the inner neighborhoods behind. And so Franklin became somewhat disconnected from the economic life of the city.

“Connection” is a word that comes up a lot when Brown talks about what the neighborhood needs. “We’ve got a disconnectivity problem.

have a car. When you’ve got three crosswalks in the 2-mile distance between Fruitridge and Sutterville [roads].”

The North Franklin District begins at Broadway and runs south along Franklin for 4 miles, almost to Florin Road. The western edge of the district is the Union Pacific railroad tracks, then 24th Street, as far as Sutterville Road. The eastern boundary is Highway 99.

And while the neighborhood has been skipped over for new development, a byproduct is that it is largely free of the fast-food and retail chains that are found in other commercial corridors.

Franklin Boulevard boasts a remarkable set of long-running family businesses, many of which have been on the strip for decades. In fact, this year, there are more than 25 establishments in the North Franklin District that have been in business for more than 50 years. Some of the businesses, like Red’s Plumbing Supply (opened in 1950) or Caballo Blanco (1961), or South Sacramento Leader Pharmacy (1941) are Sacramento institutions.

For a while, in the 1970s and ’80s, Franklin was a main drag for Sacramento’s cruisers and Latino car clubs. One provocative headline from an October 1979 issue of The Sacramento Union reads, “Low Riders forcing Franklin merchants to their knees.”

The story quotes the then-owners of the Burger Shack, on Franklin at 18th Avenue, explaining why they simply gave up painting over the graffiti and regretted buying the tiny restaurant, with the beer-drinking cruisers in the parking lot every Friday and Saturday night.

Those particular owners didn’t last long.

Scott’s Burger Shack is a long walk from both light-rail stations near Franklin Boulevard, but business is up. Owner Scott Hackett says he just wishes there were fewer empty lots in the neighborhood.

‘Ugliest street’ in Sacramento The Sacramento Union in 1986 called Franklin the “ugliest street” in Sacramento, much to the annoyance of the then-city councilman for the area, Joe Serna.

“It just inflamed Joe that the ‘ugliest street’ in town was in his district,” says Frank Cable, owner of South Sacramento Leader Pharmacy.

The fight against blight has been on ever since.

SN&R visited Cable’s pharmacy on a busy Friday afternoon. He took a break while a couple of employees manned the counter, toggling easily between English and Spanish. Years ago, a high percentage of the customers in Cable’s pharmacy held Campbell Soup Company insurance cards; the employees had their own credit union. As the workforce was winnowed, that credit union joined the Sacramento Credit

lots in the area—there are so many empty lots.

The low riders are long gone. The Shack sports a metal grating around its windows, a precaution against nighttime vandalism. But beyond that, Hackett says, “I don’t think Franklin is rougher than anywhere else.”

As for business, “it’s spiked in the last five years.” Hackett figures tasty cheap food is always in demand.

Over time, the Campbell workers in Cable’s store were replaced by Spanish-speaking construction workers, who made their livings on the suburban building boom to the south.

Cable explains, “The carpenters, the roofers, the landscape-installation people” made pretty good money, and spent it on prescriptions or in the carniceria across the street. When building went bust, “Many of them just moved on. The last five years, we lost a lot of people on the boulevard.”

Out of Serna’s aggravation with the title of “ugliest street” was born the North Franklin Business District Association, of which Cable is now president. (He’s only the second owner of the pharmacy, which he bought in 1973.)

Serna and the district got the Sacramento Municipal Utility District to cough up money to put all the telephone and electric lines on Franklin Boulevard underground, considerably reducing the ugly clutter that had earned the Union’s scorn. There was a tree-planting effort, and the district helped business owners

remove outdated street signs. More recently, the district brought back the classic cars as part of the annual Hispanic/Latino parade. Two years ago, local artists painted murals on many of the walls of Franklin shops.

Connie Herrera’s La Pantera Club, on 26th Avenue, has thrived over the last 20 years as a spot for Latin music and dancing. She’s like a lot of business owners in the area who say things are better than they were 10 or 20 years ago.

But she added that progress has been slow, and lately, there have been setbacks.

“There’s been a lot of beautification, a lot of changes. We definitely have more streetlights and sidewalks. But there’s a lot more to be done,” she says.

Illegal dumping is rampant in the numerous empty lots throughout the area, and sometimes in the streets themselves. Sections of some streets still lack sidewalks, and have open ditches instead of covered storm drains.

The neighborhood was dealt a blow when the Sacramento City Unified School District decided to close the 60-year-old Maple Elementary School—part of a round of budget cuts and controversial school closures that mostly hit south Sacramento’s poor and nonwhite neighborhoods. Hernandez says the closures just perpetuate the cycle of neighborhood neglect.

“You stunt the growth of the neighborhood.

People don’t want to be here, and they move to different neighborhoods.”

The North Franklin District crisscrosses city and county boundaries. The northern portion is inside the city limits, the southern part in the unincorporated county. Just south of the city limits, you find The Avenues, bounded by 41st and 47th avenues and Franklin and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards, an area of some of the highest crime rates in the city or county.

This is the spot that the Sacramento County Economic Development and Marketing department picked earlier this year for a possible “re-entry” facility for federal parolees.

“You’ve got high rates of gang activity, drugs, firearms—everything is right here,” says Hernandez. “This is not the most conducive place for parolees to re-enter society. You are really setting them up for failure.”

That plan was fought off by merchants and neighbors, who testified to the County Planning Commission.

The neighborhood also played defense when local Sacramento City Councilman Jay Schenirer started talking with Safe Ground Sacramento about a possible homeless camp just off of Franklin near Fruitridge.

“We already have quite a few challenges to deal with,” says Brown. “We don’t need a massive homeless population wandering the streets of Franklin Boulevard, along with federal

parolees trying to find jobs in a place where there aren’t enough jobs for the people who already live here.”

Schenirer told SN&R that when the neighborhood objected, “that was the end of it. I wasn’t going to force it.”

He says he supports the North Franklin District’s effort to revitalize and mentions the Mississippi Avenue area of Portland, Ore., as a possible model: “There are no chains: It was completely redeveloped with local incentives.”

Was soup good for Franklin?

Incentives can be tricky. In 1993, 20 years ago, the county approved an ambitious redevelopment plan for the 1,400 acres around Franklin Boulevard.

It worked like this: Any improvements in the area would lead to increased business and, therefore, generate additional tax revenue.

This “tax increment” money would

be collected by the redevelopment agency and reinvested in the area.

Often, redevelopment areas borrow money for projects by issuing bonds against that estimated future taxincrement money.

At the time it began, the SHRA estimated that some $231 million would be plowed back into Franklin over the course of 35 years. In reality, less than one-tenth of that money was ever raised and invested by the SHRA. That’s in part because Gov. Jerry Brown eliminated redevelopment this year. The economic stagnation of the last few years also didn’t help, as it meant less tax money captured by redevelopment areas.

And for the Franklin Boulevard Redevelopment Project Area, the area’s biggest asset also turned out to be one of its biggest challenges.

The Campbell Soup plant had been an important economic engine on the boulevard since 1947. But in 1993—the same time locals were trying to launch their new redevelopment area—Campbell was threatening to leave town and ditch its aging plant. At the time, Sacramento leaders were also bracing for the economic blow caused by closure of local military bases, like Mather Air Force Base. To keep Campbell Soup, county leaders agreed to give them back a portion of its property taxes to invest in its own facility.

But that meant millions in taxes that would never be collected by the redevelopment area.

“It’s always been kind of a hindrance for us on the boulevard,” says Cable. Today, he wonders if the big subsidy to Campbell was worth it.

“What the hell? Maybe it would have been like Mather, and been all done and cleaned up, and we’d be another 10 years down the road.”

The Campbell deal presented other problems for redevelopment.

Because Campbell wasn’t paying taxes into the redevelopment area, SHRA was not able to issue bonds to fund redevelopment projects—a tool that was available to other redevelopment areas.

As a result, projects moved forward piecemeal. There were several streetscape improvements.

The SHRA gave business owners matching funds to improve their facades. The money was already in the pipeline for new sidewalks going in along the west side of Franklin, between 47th Avenue and the city limit. And a new community center, to be built on 41st Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, broke ground earlier this year.

But the list of unfinished projects is a long one. Plans for a new small park—there is no park on Franklin Boulevard—are off.

“mixed use” project, and a “weed and seed” rehab of some of the distressed apartment buildings in The Avenues are also on hold, as the state Legislature debates what sort of housing entities will succeed with the redevelopment agencies.

In the end, about $25 million was raised in the Franklin Boulevard Redevelopment Project Area over 20 years. About $6 million of that had to be returned to the county when Gov. Brown eliminated redevelopment.

“With the dissolution of redevelopment, we just weren’t able to accomplish the vision in our urban design plan,” says SHRA’s assistant director Chris Pahule.

Reconnecting the boulevard Franklin, and south Sacramento generally, represent what some call the “first ring” suburbs. Built in the mid-20th century, the inner ring has been overlooked as money and attention flow to outer suburbs, or to the inner core, as cities remake their downtowns as playgrounds for the wealthy.

But Lynn Ross, of the Washington, D.C.-based Urban Land Institute, says these inner neighborhoods have a lot going for them that makes them worthy of attention and investment.

“A majority of Americans are looking for compact, mixed-use areas. And these first-tier suburbs have a lot of the elements that folks are looking for. They are generally well-located, [and] they have good transportation options.”

Franklin is 7 miles from downtown, and has two light-rail stations: 47th Avenue, and the stop just north of there, Fruitridge. Sacramento City College is 1 mile away. It has acres and acres of developable land close to existing infrastructure.

“If you really want to talk about sustainable neighborhoods, here’s one that’s ready to go,” says Hernandez.

Hernandez teaches urban sociology at UC Davis. One of his recent papers explored how Sacramento’s history of racial discrimination in housing created the north-south axis of poor neighborhoods that exists today. Another tracked transportation spending in the region, and found it follows a “doughnut” pattern, with older, poorer areas like south Sacramento in the middle of the donut hole.

Marti Brown took over as director of the North Franklin District last year. She has a background in redevelopment; in fact, she worked for seven years for SHRA, though not in the Franklin area.

She actually lives in Vallejo and commutes to Franklin every day. At home in Vallejo, she’s an elected city councilwoman.

Brown says that in her experience, new sidewalks and tax breaks only get you so far. “It isn’t enough just to look at the businesses. You have to look at education, job readiness, employment. If the people who live here aren’t doing well, they certainly aren’t going to be shopping or spending very much money. All of it is connected.”

The first step, says Brown, is triage and trying to keep the neighborhood from becoming a “sacrifice zone” to dump the city’s social problems.

Next, she is working with Hernandez to collect data, making a sort of inventory of the neighborhood’s assets and needs, infrastructure and social goods. Then, a more complete economic development plan.

In the past, the North Franklin District would try to talk SHRA or the local economic-development department into providing some money to hire consultants to do a study. That’s not an option anymore, so Brown has had to improvise.

“It’s awesome working with no money. The freedom is just amazing,” she deadpans.

That improvisation is likely to be a big part of the post-redevelopment era. “There is no redevelopment. I think increasingly, we’ll see districts like North Franklin finding unique, creative ways to revitalize their districts. Because there really isn’t any funding.”

Even without consultants and expensive studies, it’s obvious that Hernandez and Brown have some ideas. “Part of rebooting a community is turning it into a place,” says Hernandez. “It’s hard to turn a neighborhood into a place when you have four lanes of high-speed traffic running through it.”

He proposes a “road diet,” replacing traffic lanes with bike lanes, and wider sidewalks in some areas. They are thinking the neighborhood might benefit from a shuttle system, to help make up for the lack of other transportation options.

Does the neighborhood want shuttles or road diets? “That’s a fair question,” says Brown. They won’t know until they gather that information.

But it seems clear that Franklin’s future is tightly connected to the soonto-be-vacant Campbell Soup site, and the district’s two light-rail stations.

Light rail is a huge investment, which transit agencies make—over cheaper bus lines—in part because it’s seen as a catalyst for nearby development. Which, in turn, supports more transit ridership.

“When you have a light-rail stop like this, it’s supposed to be an event. It’s supposed to bring retail, it’s supposed to bring housing. And you can’t see any of that here,” says Hernandez.

Brown says Campbell’s transition is a rare opportunity. “It’s our hope that the fence would come down, and we’d create some more synergy and connectivity between the site and the light-rail station, and really capitalize on the opportunity for transit-oriented development.”

Hernandez elaborates: He sees a matchup in the site’s historic role in food processing and the local push for a “farm-to-fork” economy.

“You could have food courts, educational places. You could put housing down one strip,” he says.

“The idea is to open this up and connect it to Franklin Boulevard.”

The general manager of Sacramento Regional Transit, Mike Wiley, says that RT’s policy has long been to encourage transitoriented development around its light-rail stops. RT has written policies concerning possible transitoriented development around both the 47th Avenue and Fruitridge

Development and Marketing department director Troy Givans was more general—and less inspiring.

“Sacramento County has reached out to Campbell Soup Company with a list of priorities for the site, which includes bringing high quality jobs to the neighborhood. When the sale is complete, we will encourage the new owner to develop the property in a way that benefits the community.”

The property is, after all, private, and Brown acknowledges new urbanist visions won’t much matter if the new owners have no interest.

“How much say we’re going to have over the redevelopment of that site, it’s probably limited. But we want to encourage whoever the buyer is to create that connectivity to the community.”

Councilman Schenirer says it’s “a tremendous opportunity. It could be a real economic catalyst for the neighborhood.” And the Urban Land Institute’s Ross likewise remarks, “Here’s a huge physical symbol of what the community was. You can create a new symbol of what the community wants to be.”

to share, since the negotiations are confidential.”

If Campbell feels any obligation to help make sure the new owner is a good fit for the neighborhood that relied on, and subsidized, the company for so many years, it’s not saying.

Meanwhile, Hernandez and Brown and the people on Franklin will keep plugging away at their plan.

Trying to connect, says Hernandez.

“Our goal is to turn it back into a place, a place that’s connected to the rest of the world.” Ω

In 1978, three Sacramento brothers reimagined the iconic Swiss Family Robinson as a musical. Now, more than 30 years later, it’s finally brought to life on a New York stage.

Walter Kennedy looks on. He sees into the apparent chaos, locates the problem and nods, making notes. Kennedy knows what they should be doing, but they’re not quite doing it yet. Just keeping these 17 people from bumping into each other is a challenge in this limited space.

Kennedy waves his hand to stop the music and steps into the middle of the lithe, energetic group, moving his own arms and giving instructions.

“I want you to throw your hands all the way up and circle down—really go all the way up,” he instructs. He gives one dancer another movement tip and smiles back at his younger brother, Patrick, who has been sitting to his left. Then, he sits back down and signals the pianist to start again.

This looks like chaos, but it is chaos with a purpose: Kennedy is directing a dance sequence he choreographed for the new musical Swiss Family Robinson. The show, based on the 1812 book by Johann David Wyss, opened July 9, in a West 42nd Street theater, for a limited performance run.

The run is part of the annual New York Musical Theatre Festival, a showcase of 50 new musicals that have been in development in cities around the country—and beyond. Produced at the festival, shows have the potential to be seen by the New York producers and directors and even stars who could help bring them to the Great White Way. It’s happened before. Previous shows in the festival’s previous nine years—productions such as Altar Boyz and Next to Normal Normal—have gone on to win three Tony Awards and even a Pulitzer Prize.

For anyone who has had the creative guts and sheer stamina to compose a musical, a showing at The New York Musical Theatre Festival is just steps from a dream come true.

Swiss Family Robinson, the musical, is one such dream. It is the dream of another family: the Kennedys of Sacramento. The show is the creation of three brothers—John, Walter and Patrick—who first conceived of the show while still in high school in Sacramento, in the late ’70s.

More than 30 years later, that dream has come true. But first, there is a lot of work to do.

The summer of ’78 The Kennedy brothers grew up on musicals.

Their late dad, Walter Kennedy Jr., was an insurance executive and union drummer who played gigs around town, including one at the old Sacramento Inn. Says Walter, “I remember my parents going to see Ethel Merman do Gypsy in San Francisco. We loved it, too.”

Walter fell for theater first, but over time, all three of the brothers discovered an aspect that appealed: John found composing and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Walter studied dance at The Juilliard School in New York and toured for years with the Lewitzky Dance Company in Los Angeles. Patrick, meanwhile, realized he

wanted to write and direct and moved first to Los Angeles and then later, to New York City.

During rehearsal, Patrick, the “baby” of the family at 53—Walter is 57 and John is 58—has been sitting quietly to Walter’s left, watching the dancers rehearse. The choreography is Walter’s, so Patrick is taking a backseat.

But Patrick is the co-writer (with composer John) of the book for Swiss Family Robinson, and its director. And although all have a stake in the show, Patrick’s are professional: He has lived in New York for 20 years, fighting the epic struggle demanded of playwrights here, writing nearly a dozen plays himself. The anxiety over whether this show will do well is written all over his face.

For John, the eldest and quietest of the three, this realization of a childhood dream is the cherry on top of a successful career managing hotels. When a job change left him with a lot of time on his hands and no imperative to work, Patrick suggested he go back to “that musical we had played around with” in the late ’70s while they were student mentors in the Musical Comedy Workshop of the San Juan Unified School District.

Then, the head of the program, Mira Loma High School theater teacher Chuck Evans, had asked the boys, who had already done small musicals, to come up with something for the following summer of 1978.

“We sat around for months trying to come up with an idea,” Patrick says. “But months passed, and we got nothing.”

John picks up the story: “One day in the spring, it was getting really close to when we were supposed to have something, and we were sitting in one of our bedrooms at the house, and our dad poked his head in the door and just said, ‘Swiss Family Robinson,’ and disappeared.”

The brothers instantly grasped the concept, and, careful to steer clear of Disney’s 1960 movie version (the second film version of the novel, which is in the public domain), the brothers launched into a creative frenzy, and by the start of the summer program, they had created a new musical for a run at El Camino Fundamental High School.

But when the curtain came down, the sheet music and book for Swiss Family Robinson went into a drawer, right along with the Broadway dreams of the Kennedy brothers.

And life went on.

where all that money is going: professionals. The Kennedys and their general manager, Suellen Vance, have been sure to spend the money on a 17-member cast and five-piece band that are fiercely professional.

Among the performers are Emily Shoolin, who just came from Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark; Patrick Oliver Jones, back from the first national tour of The Addams Family; Barbara Tirrell, who was in Broadway megahits Wicked, Annie and Fiddler on the Roof Roof; and James Patterson, from Beauty and the Beast.

This is, after all, New York City, where the best musical-theater performers live and work and throw their bodies and souls completely into their performances. This is the big time.

Upon hearing their voices massed together to deliver his clever, intricate and unmistakably Broadway-bound melodies, the generally quiet John Kennedy says simply, “Amazing.”

“This is really a huge cast,” says Michael Lorz, who plays the nerdy son Ernst with great energy and comic timing. “I just came from doing Moisés Kaufman’s [Gross Indecency: The

Now, 35 years after their musical made its Sacramento debut, this new version of Swiss Family Robinson—with only about 25 percent of the Kennedy’s original show—features a budget that’s considerably bigger than the one they had in 1978. The Kennedy’s won’t give an exact number, but say that “shows of this sort” can cost upwards of $75,000 to produce.

But while they have more money, there are constraints: primarily time. Because this is a short festival run, the production, once designed, is limited by various Equity contracts to four weeks of rehearsal. And they can only rehearse five hours a day during that time. The pressure is on.

But the Kennedys are using their budget well, and even in rehearsal, it’s easy to see BEFORE | N E W S | F E AT U R E

With 17 performers, a five-piece band, an assistant stage manager, a four-person crew, a wardrobe manager, a soundboard operator, a lighting-board operator and two spotlight operators, even putting a show as modest as Swiss Family Robinson on a stage for an audience is a remarkably complex undertaking.

“It’s all about the people you get,” says Walter. “We got some amazing professionals, and you can see it on the stage and off.”

Vance brought them Denise Wilcox as stage manager, who keeps all those moving parts from bumping into each other.

With 20 years of stage management under her belt, Wilcox runs the rehearsals literally down to the minute, calling out instructions to the cast, so that the Kennedys can fulfill their creative roles without having to manage traffic.

“It would not be happening without her,” says John.

the production for a revival of a ’50s classic, part Gilbert and Sullivan, part Rodgers & Hammerstein, perfect for Broadway.

Which is not to say it is simple music. The vocal arrangements, by John with musical director Matt Aument, are powerful by any standard, and occasionally downright dazzling.

“Ultimately, this is really John’s thing,” says Walter. “If anything is exceptional about the show, it’s the music and lyrics. I still get excited hearing the songs. It’s a smart and sophisticated score. The rest of the show is in service of that.”

In fact, the show’s first performance, on July 9, even attracted a representative from the Disney Theatrical Group to take a look. Given Disney’s own classic feature film of the story, the company is more than a little curious about what these upstarts might have done with the original book.

Certainly, they’ll be intrigued by what they see, as the show comes off virtually without a hitch, the cast’s powerful voices filling the 160-seat performance space, the nearly capacity audience—which includes Walter’s old Juilliard classmate and Broadway superstar Bebe Neuwirth—laughing through the show’s broad comedy and cheering at its full-throated climax.

Wilcox is thrilled with the results, particularly since the entire “tech” process—putting the cast into costumes and onto the stage, each with a head mic, getting the band into its corner, balancing the sound, setting the lights, planning 200 lighting cues—was done on Tuesday afternoon, the day before the first performance.

“We usually have at least a week to do that,” Wilcox says. “To have an opening go off the way that did last night is just incredible.”

At the cast party on the roof garden of the chic Yotel hotel, around the corner from the theater, the Kennedy brothers relax and chat with the cast members.

The brothers themselves are quiet. John, reticent at the best of times, was said to have been literally sick with anxiety before the performance, and he has tucked himself away somewhere, while Patrick, who could clearly use some sleep, declares himself “relieved” and “happy that things came off so well.”

Walter, the most talkative Kennedy, is thrilled. He is, in some ways, the one with the least skin in the game, after a lifelong career in dance. But he is clearly rooting for the family.

Coming to town to root for the brothers is their biggest fan: their mother, Barbara Kennedy, 85.

“It’s such a thrill, I can’t tell you,” she says, by phone from California. Retired now from a career as a teacher and principal in the San Juan Unified School District, she says that her sons got their talents from her late husband, not her.

“I can’t carry a tune in a bucket,” Barbara says.

But she has always been a great audience member, and she plans to soak it all in when she’s in New York.

“I’ll see it Saturday, Sunday and whenever the last [show] is. … I might not ever have a chance to see it again—I’m going to take advantage while I can,” she says.

With any luck, there will be many more chances for her and other theatergoers around the country to see Swiss Family Robinson.

Sierra Storytelling Festival Friday, July 19, through Sunday, July 21 If you were ever skeptical of the epigram “It’s not what you say, but how you say it,” here’s an event that may just prove it’s true: the Sierra Storytelling Festival. The festival, held at the North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center (17894 Tyler Foote Road in Nevada City) on Friday through Sunday, features a diverse lineup of guest storytellers, a workshop, a story slam and concerts.

Here’s what you need to know about the guest storytellers: Baba Jamal Koram blends stories with music, audience participation and humor; Laura Simms is a Shambhala Buddhist meditation teacher; Andy Offutt Irwin specializes in sound effects; Tim Tingle tells family Choctaw stories; Charlie Chin is a master of the “Teahouse Style” of classical Chinese storytelling; and Caroline Paul is known to tell tales of her adventures as a firefighter.

If you want your own chance to turn a phrase and you’re 18 or older, participate in a story slam on Friday at 10 p.m., or an open telling at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. If you’d like to learn how to be a better wordsmith, learn from Simms at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Various concerts happen throughout the festival. Head out to the tree-lined foothills, imagine you’re at a campfire, and let a good story capture your imagination.

The race, which SPORTS has copyrighted its descriptor “The World’s Oldest Triathlon,” turns 40 this year. Eclectic, upscale—and unfocused Back Wine Bar & Bistro 25075 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 150 in Folsom; (916) 986-9100; www.backwinebar.com Back Wine Bar & Bistro in Folsom was conceived of by Gail and Jeff Back, who remedied the area’s need for a wine bar with food that pleases by Garrett McCord both the experienced palate and the occasional fine diner. Situated in the burbs on Blue Ravine Road, Back has nuzzled itself into a comfortable niche with a wine selection and an eclectic—albeit unfocused—menu that draws an upscale crowd.

On one visit, the bruschetta plate arrives with four types of toppings, two of each: goat cheese, avocado, caramelized onion and Rating: tomato. They don’t suck, but they aren’t great.

HHH 1/2 The avocado bruschetta exhibits some pizzazz, thanks to a sly use of cumin, though it’s cheapened by the fact that the toast is bequeathed dinner for one: only a skid mark of avocado. $25 - $50 The ahi poke sleeps upon a tower of sticky rice, as if it were a princess trying to feel for a pea. The tuna is fresh, light and well-cut (which matters when it comes to fish). The kitchen has wittingly paired it with a Japanese farm-food classic: cucumber sunomono. Here, nearly translucent slivers of cucumber are tossed with black sesame seeds, soy sauce, sugar and vinegar. It enlivens the ahi perfectly and H is smartly contrasted by a dribble of chili-soy Flawed sauce and crushed macadamias.

HH Along the pasta lines, the menu features haS momentS somewhat of an island of misfit gnocchi. This HHH gnocchi was too fat, this one too flat, this one appealing too big, this one wanted to be a dentist. About 10 years ago, when vegan-friendly restaurants were fewer and far between, Cafe Morocco’s (1221 Alhambra Boulevard, Suite 107) North African and Middle Eastern menu was an exciting prospect. However, my first visit there was a gastronomical disappointment, and it wasn’t until recently that I gave it a second chance. Inside, the place looks as it did a decade ago, with its colorful regional décor. I ordered the vegetarian combination dinner—enough to stuff two bellies, with soup or salad (ask for the latter without feta cheese), baba ghanoush, a drink, dessert and choice of entree. The “musaka” was the right choice: This thick, delicious stew of garbanzo beans and vegetables in a rich tomato-based sauce served alongside rice redeemed that first, long-ago meal.

In the end, the food is hit-and-miss, with the misses being forgettable rather than poor (minus the soufflé). A little refinery needs to happen to make the food at Back unique enough for the average Sacramento diner to find it worth the trip, but for the Folsom diner who feels Grange Restaurant & Bar is too far, Back will do right enough.

A major plus is that wine is also served by the half-glass, a far too-ignored practice in many other restaurants, and I applaud Back for having the balls to do it. In addition, the wine selection is as strong as it is eclectic, and pairing recommendations are practical, so you won’t go wrong. Ω

won’t find any “challenging” dishes on this menu—just delicious local and seasonal food such as the Green Curry & Pumpkin Soup, which has a Southeast Asian flair. A spinach salad features ingredients that could be considered boring elsewhere: blue-cheese dressing, bacon, onion. But here, the sharply cheesy buttermilk dressing and the woodsy pine nuts make it a salad to remember. Grange’s brunch puts other local offerings to shame. The home fries are like marvelously crispy Spanish patatas bravas. A grilled-hamand-Gruyere sandwich is just buttery enough, and an eggwhite frittata is more than a bone thrown to the cholesterolchallenged; it’s a worthy dish in its own right. American.

Zia’s Delicatessen Zia’s Delicatessen isn’t really about trying every sandwich: It’s about finding your sandwich.

In addition to a large selection of salumi, there’s the worthy eponymous offering, served with a wedge of zucchini frittata, a slice of provolone, romaine lettuce, grainy tomato, and a simple dash of vinegar and oil that adds tang. Order it hot, so that the provolone melts into the bread. Also tasty: the hot meatball sub with small-grained, tender meatballs bathed in a thin, oregano-flecked tomato sauce that soaks into the bread. A tuna sandwich

is sturdy, if not exciting. It is just mayonnaisey enough, with tiny, diced bits of celery.

A rosemary panino cotto with mozzarella could benefit from a more flavorful cheese. For a meatier option, try the Milano: mortadella, salami, Muenster; all three flavors in balance.

The turkey Viareggio has a thin spread of pesto mayo, and the smoked mozzarella accents rather than overpowers.

Midtown 24K Chocolat Cafe This cafe serves a solid, if very limited, brunch and lunch menu. One offering is a firm wedge of frittata with a strong tang of sharp cheddar that almost but doesn’t quite jibe with the slightly spicy mole sauce on the plate.The spinach curry, made creamy by coconut milk rather than dairy, comes topped with cubes of tofu and tiny diced scallion and red bell pepper and rests atop a smooth potato cake. A side of garbanzobean salad is well-flavored with the surprising combination of mint and apricot. The place, located inside Ancient Future, has “chocolat” in the name, and chocolate is in many of the menu offerings, including a tiny cup of hot Mexican drinking chocolate, and chocolatecherry scones served crisp and hot, studded with big chunks of bittersweet chocolate and tart dried cherries. Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co. The restaurant, by the same owners as Midtown’s The Golden Bear, sports a firefighting theme (a ladder on the ceiling duct work, shiny silver wallpaper with a rat-and-hydrant motif, et al) and a bar setup that encourages patrons to talk to each other. An interesting wine list includes entries from Spain and Israel; there are also draft cocktails and numerous beers on tap. The brunch menu is heavy on the eggs, prepared in lots of ways. One option is the Croque Madame, a hamand-Gruyere sandwich usually battered with egg. This one had a fried egg and béchamel, with a generous smear of mustard inside. The mountain of potato hash alongside tasted flavorful and not too greasy.

The menu also features pizzas and house-made pastas, but one of its highlights includes an excellent smoked-eggplant baba ganoush, which is smoky and garlicky and served with warm flatbread wedges and oil-cured olives. The bananas foster bread pudding is equally transcendent, accompanied by very salty caramel gelato, pecans and slivers of brûléed bananas. American. 1630 S St., (916) 442-4885. LowBrau This place specializes in beer and bratwursts. Both are done smashingly. The sausage is wrapped in a tight, snappy skin like a gimp suit, which gets nicely charred by the chefs.

Within it lies a beguilingly spicy and juicy piece of meat. Get it with a pretzel roll for a truly

exciting experience. There are vegan options, too: The Italian, an eggplant-based brat, has a surprisingly sausagelike texture that no self-respecting carnivore will turn it down for lack of flavor. Toppings include sauerkraut, a “Bier Cheese” sauce and caramelized onions.

The idea behind Duck Fat Fries is a glorious one, yet somehow still falls short. You just expect something more when you see the words “duck fat.” The beer selection is epic. The Rind This is a fromage fanatic’s delight with a menu that changes frequently. A chalkboard by the bar lists the daily suggested trios for cheese boards, but order the Diving Board to choose your own combo.

Each arrives with six crisp toasts and two sides, like dried fruit and honey. The rations are small, but reasonable for two people. Buy any of the cheeses by the pound. Ask for the list at the bar. There are also many grilled-cheese sandwich choices and several versions of mac ’n’ cheese, including Not Your Mom’s Mac with Parmesan, Gruyere and cheddar. It’s silky smooth, without any excess oil. A richer version includes blue cheese and prosciutto for

over-the-top indulgence.

East Sac Hot City Pizza This East Sacramento eatery is probably better known for its beer than its food, but its pizza is pretty darn good. Each slice is made with a unique multigrain crust that’s soft, airy and helps soak up a belly full of beer. There are also interesting topping combinations, notably a section full of chicken-topped pizza, plenty of vegetarian options and handful of Pacific Islanderthemed pies, such as the Hawaii on Fire, which comes topped with sweet Thai chili sauce, Canadian bacon, pepperoni, green peppers, pineapple, jalapeño and mozzarella cheese. Of course, beer is the real draw here, and Hot City gets an extra star for its fine selection. With so many choices—there are several fridges full of bottled beer and a handful of rotating taps—selecting a brew can be a tremendously difficult but worthwhile undertaking. Pizza.

Istanbul Bistro Turkish chef Murat Bozkurt and brother Ekrem co-own this paean to their homeland, with Ekrem usually at the front of the house, infusing the space with cheer. Turkish cuisine features aspects of Greek, Moroccan and Middle Eastern flavors. The appetizer combo plate offers an

impressive sampling. Acili ezme is a chopped, slightly spicy mixture of tomatoes, cucumber and walnuts that’s delicious paired with accompanying flatbread wedges. For entrees, try the borani, a lamb stew with garbanzos, carrots, potatoes and currants. The meat is very tender, while the veggies arrived nicely al dente. Also good is the chicken shish plate (souvlaki), which features two skewers of marinated grilled chicken that’s moist and succulent. North Sac Asian Café Asian Café serves both Thai and Lao food, but go for the Lao specialties, which rely on flavoring staples such as fish sauce, lime juice, galangal and lemongrass, lots of herbs, and chilies. One of the most common dishes in Lao cuisine is larb, a dish of chopped meat laced with herbs, chilies and lime. At Asian Café, it adds optional offal add-ons—various organ meats, entrails, et al—to three versions of the dish: beef with tripe, chicken with gizzards, or pork with pork skin. The beef salad offers a gentle respite from aggressive flavors, consisting of medium-thick chewy slices of eye of round with red bell pepper, chopped iceberg and hot raw jalapeño. South Sac Blue Moon Cafe and Karaoke In Sac, most people equate Hong Kong-style cuisine with dim sum, but this restaurant, which also features private karaoke rooms, serves up tasty, familiar food by way of rice plates, sandwiches, noodle bowls, soups and stirfries. A few random Japanese (ramen, fried udon), French (sweet or savory crepes), Russian (borscht), Korean (beef and kimchi hot pot) and Italian (various pastas) foods add to the feeling that whatever your cultural background, you’ll find a comfort dish from your childhood to wrap its arms around you and give you a hug. Arden/ Carmichael Skip’s Kitchen You know you’re at an American restaurant when a cheeseburger is one of the healthiest items on the menu. Sure enough, Skip’s Kitchen features a lot of calorie-rich items, such as

fried macaroni-and-cheese balls, ravioli, chicken strips, chicken wings and shrimp, plus creamy Oreo milkshakes.

There are salads, too, but the best dish on the menu is the burger. All five styles (original, mushroom and Swiss, bacon and cheddar, three-cheese, and Western) are served on a brioche bun and cooked “medium,” unless otherwise specified. The kitchen offers a house-made veggie burger as well. If there’s such a thing as a “gourmet” burger that can rightfully sell for $10, this is probably it. American.

Customers can choose from two types of pies: breakfast or lunch. Breakfast pizzas consist of standard pizza dough, on top of which rests a thin layer of egg, cheese and toppings (read: no sauce).

One pepperoni-and-jalapeños morning pie starts off well, but then the dough disappoints. It doesn’t quite fit in either the “thick” or “thin” category; it’s not yeasty enough and too chewy and firm. A mushroom-andspinach pie offers better texture. Lunch pizzas here are less unique, but still hit a nice mark via a few standout ingredients. The garlic pizza reaches a nice balance of sweet and salty with a creamy white sauce, mushrooms, onions, pepperoni and sausage. Buffalo also offers Gunther’s Ice Cream, side salads, fried chicken and canned sodas, but here, it’s breakfast pizza for the win. American.

Taqueria Garibaldi One of this restaurant’s biggest pulls is its choice of meats. The chorizo is red, crispy and greasy in all the best ways. The lengua (tongue) is soft and dreamily reminiscent of only the most ethereal bits of beef. The fish is fine and flaky and the cabeza and pork are herculean in flavor options worthy of note, too. Tacos are small and served on two tiny tortillas (flour or corn, your call) with a bit of house salsa that has all the kick of a pissed off Girl Scout who’s just tall enough to nail you right under the kneecap. Or, feel free to customize, too, courtesy of the fully loaded salsa bar. Be sure to pick up a glass of the homemade horchata, which is sweet and milky with seductive whispers of cinnamon. The Hideaway Bar & Grill This bar fills a niche Sacramento might not have known it lacked with its vague rockabilly vibe, lots of greased hair on the men, brightly dyed hair in retro styles and cat-eye glasses on the ladies, and an abundance of black clothes and tattoo sleeves for all. The liquor selection is basic (no craft cocktails here). The menu’s heavy on fried appetizers, salads, sandwiches and burgers, the latter of which are architectural, towering assemblages. Happily, the fluffy charred buns are sturdy enough to hold up when the tower is squeezed to a more realistic height. A meaty veggie burger (one of three veggie sandwich options) gets crunch from fried pickles and sweet heat from barbecue sauce. Overall, the Hideaway offers cheap beer, adequate bar food and a comfortable place to hang with out friends.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the most oft-produced Shakespeare comedy, and this version by Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival is the third by Jeff Hudson SN&R’s reviewed this year. Much of the play’s popularity stems from the script’s endless flexibility. While nominally set in ancient Athens, Dream is so inviting to interpretation that savvy directors can (and do) introduce all manner of fascinating design concepts. And the humor, involving eager young lovers and contentious older couples, is funny in almost any setting. Which is part of why audiences enjoy seeing this play again and again: No two productions are alike. Part of the fun comes from seeing what interesting new angle they’ll come up with. Dream has become very much a “director’s piece.”

In this production, director Charlie Fee works a psychedelic, British-invasion concept.

Puck wears paisley and a top hat, along with a mischievous grin. Young Hermia frolics in a miniskirt, counterpart Helena wears tight pants with electric-orange stripes. The fairy rulers Oberon and Titania are decked out in flowing robes and blossoms, like ethereal gurus from an Indian meditation retreat. The Rude Mechanicals perform their hilarious play-within-a-play in bright satiny jackets—à la Sgt. Pepper—and a Volkswagen Bug rolls through several scenes. The sound design is packed with short musical quotations from middle-period Beatles songs (mostly love songs), focusing on lyrics cleverly selected to complement the action in the scene the music accompanies.

It’s a very appealing mix, feeling so natural that you’d almost think Shakespeare (who was not averse to borrowing!) had written it this

Closet Door Theatre Company, a fledgling group dedicated to productions with significance in the LGBTQI community, offers a very good version of the classic Larry Kramer play The Normal Heart. Set in the early days of the AIDS epidemic, the play chronicles the efforts of Ned Weeks—an avatar for Kramer himself—to alert New York’s gay community to the danger they faced and to organize a public-health response.

Ned is played by the outstanding Shawn B. O’Neal, who brings to life a complex character with all the flaws, neuroses, courage and heart necessary to suffer heartbreak and walk through it during a time of crisis.

He is the fulcrum on which the play rests in virtually every scene; O’Neal does a fantastic job. He is supported in this by several strong performances, notably: Chris Bogard as Felix, Ned’s love interest; Wade Lucas as Ben, Ned’s brother; and Mark Brown as Bruce, a closeted gay executive who serves as Ned’s foil in every way. Additional supporting actors include Bonnie Antonini as an early AIDS medical specialist, Steve Buri and Matt Welch as gay activists, and Bill Gilbert and Russ Marsh in multiple roles.

Directed by Michael Hedges and Andrew Gibout, the play runs long—almost three hours—because of burdensome set changes.

These are offset by the use of a slideshow of facts and information about the AIDS epidemic, but the show could benefit from a streamlined set with less complex pieces that merely evoke a change of scene rather than make one.

The power of The Normal Heart is not merely historical. It is a reminder that our prejudices and social biases can keep us from saving our own lives by delaying or denying the existence of very real threats.

Playwright David Ives springs plenty of surprises in this masochistic comedy of dark intent in which a weary writer-director is coming off a long, fruitless day of auditions, about to head home. In comes a breathless actress, begging for a chance at the part. She says her name is the same as the character in writerdirector’s script, and she seems eerily right for the role. And she knows more about the source material (a tale of domination, submission and desire) than she initially lets on. Disclosing more might spoil the spooky and kinky fun. Actress Dana Brooke shines, and newcomer Tyler Pierce is also excellent. Tracy Prybyla’s costumes gradually shift to black leather and studs. Director Buck Busfield raises the heat gradually—the story unfolds in linear time, with growing momentum.

Mr. Woodchuckles Remember Dave Coulier? You know, Full House’s Joey Gladstone—the (rumored) guy Alanis Morissette sang about giving a hummer to in a theater in “You Oughta Know.”

He’s still around, and will be performing at Tommy T’s Comedy & Dinner Theatre in Rancho Cordova over the weekend. We know, we know: Cut. It. Out. Coulier’s enjoyed an interesting career. Before living with the Tanner family, he voiced baby Animal and baby Dr. Bunsen Honeydew on Jim Henson’s animated Muppet Babies series. He also earned his stand-up stripes performing on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

melancholic beach-house comedy of sympathetic middle-class white folks whose failed marriages are hard on their adolescent kids. Producers and actors from Little Miss Sunshine complete the cutely movieish family-dysfunction formula, with unsurprising but not unenjoyable results.

The Way, Way Back pitches itself as an alternative to the more mindless summer-movie fare (which is why it’s playing at the Tower Theatre), and that’s accurate, although it’s very plainly a safe alternative, as processed and prepackaged as anything in any multiplex. It has some laughs, some tears, no challenges.

With his dad regrettably out of the picture, an awkward, inward 14-year-old (Liam James) finds himself stranded on a seasonal vacation, drifting further apart from his divorced, well-meaning mom (Toni Collette) and her douchey new beau (Steve Carell). It is strenuously established that the kid could use a father figure, not to mention a fun summer, and so, soon enough, he lucks into some emotional tutelage from a friendly water-park manager (Sam Rockwell) who gradually helps him come of age. (This only works because the older man, for all his wisdom, has somehow managed to avoid actually turning into a grown-up.)

Consequently, our young hero does all right with the perfectly available pretty blond girl (AnnaSophia Robb) next door, and ultimately, most importantly, even summons enough selfpossession to redraw the boundaries within that station wagon. Well, what do you think? More appealing, at least, than Grown Ups 2?

The Way, Way Back’s supporting cast includes Allison Janney, Amanda Peet, Rob Corddry, and an unfortunately under-used Maya Rudolph, all generously doing their duty to nudge both the awkward and the feel-good moments forward. Young Liam James carries the film on his shoulders just as he should, but most of the time, they’re affectedly slumped. It’s Rockwell who’s the highlight here, exuding great warmth, wit and just enough irony to make even his character’s fast-accumulating bromides seem savory. Actually, the word “character” might be an overstatement of Rockwell’s contribution; it’s really more an attitude—of being wholly at the kid’s service and therefore at the movie’s.

As if helplessly fixated on its fictive central relationship, The Way, Way Back often seems to speak to its audience as a 40-something person speaks to an adolescent. Sometimes the effect is poignant, as in plaintively addressing a younger self. But sometimes it seems at once regressive and intrusive: Hey, bud, aren’t we having a good time here, making these memories?

More often, this film feels like an old project, so thoroughly dusted with Gen X nostalgia that it may have been truer as a period piece.

And maybe it’s more a matter of their priorities than skills, but Faxon and Rash, who both work as TV actors, seem in general more adept at chummy ensemble camaraderie than anything resembling big-screen vision. Reportedly, this script is what landed them the gig adapting The Descendants for director Alexander Payne, but it took the Oscar win to afford them a chance to make The Way, Way Back themselves. You’d think this movie might therefore feel more urgent—a long-simmering passion project, realized with great relish at last. But more often it simply feels like an old project, indeed so thoroughly dusted with Gen X nostalgia that it may have been truer as a period piece. Maybe a confetti of 1980s pop-culture references— Pac-Man, REO Speedwagon—is automatically required by the theme-park-summer conceit. On that front, Faxon and Rash do manage to avoid the trying-too-hard vibe of Adventureland, even if they err instead on the side of not trying hard enough.

And they do capture something familiar about how pre-adulthood summers feel (at least to middle-class white folks). Angst happens, of course, but comfortable obviousness is also what makes it a vacation. Ω

Director Richard Linklater returns to the story he began with 1995’s Before Sunrise and continued in 2004’s Before Sunset.

Another nine years, and Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) have 7-year-old twin daughters. In the first movie, the two walked around Vienna talking; in the second, Paris; now, Crete, Greece. As before, their conversation is uneventful but fascinating; they’re both intelligent and interesting, and we hang on every word, even as nothing really “happens.”

(Well, not nothing, exactly: A crisis brews, but somehow, we sense it’ll pass.) It’s amazing to think Linklater, Hawke and Delpy (who all cowrote the script) have sustained this talk-fest for three whole movies, but it’s true, and the pleasure of their company is as keen as ever.

We can hardly wait nine years to see them again. J.L

Less inspired than its predecessor, 2010’s Despicable Me, this madcap caper showcases reformed Euro-supervillain Gru (Steve Carell) who has retired to rear his three adopted daughters. His resident gadgeteer, Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand), has had a better offer—“more evil, full dental”—and Gru can’t begrudge the doctor’s departure, for the shared glory days of grand malfeasance seem by now long behind them. Then, Gru finds himself recruited by a spazzy special agent (Kristen Wiig) to thwart an incognito rival. As it happens, this heretofore unknown opponent’s dastardly scheme involves, among other nutso ideas, morphing Gru’s multitude of cute yellow minions into pernicious purple monsters. The minions should already be quite familiar, if only from this movie’s relentless merchandising.

Broad, brightly colored slapstick ensues, with some favorably Muppet-ish mayhem. The most logical thing about this film is its use of 3-D as an extension of cartoonishly exaggerated proportions. J.K

Superman gets a makeover from writer David S. Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan. This isn’t your father’s Superman—or your great-grandfather’s, for that matter. Nolan and Goyer twist him to fit their Dark Knight template: The planet Krypton is a decrepit, grimy place, and the infant Kal-El’s parents (Russell Crowe, Ayelet Zurer) could both use a shower. From ugly Krypton they dispatch their son to even uglier Earth, where he suffers through a miserable, friendless childhood to grow into a sullen, misfit Clark Kent (Henry Cavill, as drab and colorless as the movie around him), who spends more time fighting Earthling bigotry than the Kryptonian General Zod (Michael Shannon). If this dingy, joyless movie is the only way to make Superman work these days, maybe the character really has outlived his time. J.L.

Radio and TV’s daring “masked rider of the plains” takes a vicious beating at the hands of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, flushed and overconfident with their Pirates of the Caribbean success. They signal their intentions early on, when Tonto (Johnny Depp) drags the Ranger (Armie Hammer) through a pile of steaming horseshit. And that’s precisely what Bruckheimer and Verbinski proceed to do for two-and-a-half endless, leaden hours.

The movie is an eye-glazing parade of frontier grunge, lame comedy and Rube Goldberg CGI action scenes devoid of excitement.

Visiting from the Canadian motherland, Jay Baruchel meets up with his pal and countryman Seth Rogen in Los Angeles, where they try to get past postRogen-sellout estrangement through partying at James Franco’s place. It’s not really Baruchel’s scene, but the apocalypse begins just as he’s about to bail. That means holing up with Rogen, Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson and Jonah Hill—and all playing (with) themselves—and for the desperate stoner-raunch survivalism of roughing out a lo-fi sequel to Pineapple Express, dodging violent death and bucking for redemption. As proof of concept for a reality series about crudely dueling Judd Apatow alumni, this might work. As a summer movie? Well, fine, whatever. A lark for Rogen and his co-writer and co-director Evan Goldberg, it is at least on preposterousness par with celebritystuffed disaster-movie precedents. And it does make the most both of Baruchel’s natural appeal and of a solicitously slumming Emma Watson cameo. The joke of Hollywood self-indulgence as the last straw for a vengeful God is not entirely unfunny. J.K.

Four of the five buddies-since-juniorhigh of 2010’s Grown Ups are back: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade. Only Rob Schneider, in an uncharacteristically smart career move, took a pass on the sequel. Sandler and his co-writer cronies Fred Wolf and Tim Herlihy seem to have set the bar lower than usual for themselves (is there a level lower than the bottom of the barrel?), because this sequel lacks even the bare-bones story and half-hearted laughs of the original. Instead, Sandler and company invite celebrity pals along (Steve Buscemi, Tim Meadows, Shaquille O’Neal, Jon Lovitz) and pull talented actresses (Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, Maya Rudolph, Georgia Engel) down to their level. Directing once again is schlock auteur Dennis Dugan, and the result is an $80 million YouTube video. J.L.

A failed New York playwright (Kristen Wiig) loses her boyfriend and her job—then, after a fake suicide attempt, she’s remanded to the custody of the mother she can’t stand (Annette Bening). Writer Michelle Morgan and directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini serve up an urban bachelorette comedy reminiscent of Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig’s Frances Ha earlier this year—only this one’s goofier, funnier and less evenkeeled. Wiig’s patented weary-and-put-upon shtick fits easily in the semiscrewball surroundings, and the directors smoothly finesse the script’s frequent (and deliberate) changes of tone. The result is a real charmer, full of surprises. Darren Criss makes an appealing match for Wiig, and there’s a starmaking turn by Christopher Fitzgerald as Wiig’s socially challenged brother. J.L.

The Conjuring

This film is purportedly pulled from the files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, real-life “demonologists” best known for their involvement with the events that inspired the 1977 book (and subsequent 1979 and 2005 films) The Amityville Horror. That case, in which a family’s new house was possessed by demons and subsequently exorcised, has since been exposed as a hoax and the Warrens as charlatans. The Conjuring however, paints them as credible and concerned experts, and thus the film plays like an unofficial Amityville prequel, only with amplified shrieks and the now necessary Paranormal Activity-era verisimilitude.

Director James Wan (Saw) delivers effective scares, showing more interest in sinewy camera moves and building a slow creep than in mindless gore, but the performances are a mixed bag, and the script repeatedly seeks refuge in the familiar. D.B.

the Indianapolis 500. Starting from a story idea so stupid that it’s an insult to the intelligence of the average, well, snail, director David Soren and co-writers Darren Lemke and Robert D. Siegel ultimately redeem themselves with a clever production. It takes a while for the cleverness to get the upper hand, and meanwhile, we have time to reflect on the folly of DreamWorks Animation’s dogged efforts to outdo Pixar—grafting Cars onto A Bug’s Life—instead of finding stories and a style of their own. But by race time, the fun takes over, and it gets downright exciting—and, frankly, no more outlandish than the live action of the Fast and Furious movies. J.L.

A paramilitary gang led by a traitorous Secret Service agent (James Woods) storms the White House, killing and taking hostages, leaving only the president (Jamie Foxx) and a feckless Capitol police officer (Channing Tatum) to save the last best hope of Earth. Writer James Vanderbilt and director Roland Emmerich follow Marx’s principle on history repeating itself—first time as tragedy, second time as farce—by turning September 11, 2001, into a rolicking action comedy, with odd couple Tatum and Foxx as the buddy-heroes at the center of all the fun. Since this is not a terrorist strike but an inside job, the movie also evokes distant memories of 1964’s Seven Days in May and its attempted bloodless coup—this time, of course, there’s a lot more blood. Shame on you if you can’t guess who’s behind it all. J.L.

A former special agent for the United Nations (Brad Pitt) is called back into service to investigate a mysterious pestilence that has infected the entire world, turning hundreds of millions of victims into—wait for it—rabid zombies. Based on the mockumentary novel by Max Brooks (son of Mel and Anne Bancroft) and directed

by Marc Forster, the movie’s too-manycooks roster of writers (Matthew Michael Carnahan, Drew Goddard, Damon Lindelof and J. Michael Straczynski) gives testimony to production problems and frantic reshoots that ballooned the budget from $125 million to $200 million. The end result is a mixed bag; Pitt makes a deft thinking-man’s action hero and Forster stages some effective scenes, but too often—especially in the hasty, anticlimactic ending—the movie stumbles into unintentional comedy. Music fans the world over were stunned and saddened by the news of the death of Scott Miller, the brilliant singer-songwriter who fronted Game by Dennis Yudt Theory, Loud Family and Alternative Learning, better known as ALRN. Miller, a Sacramentoborn musician, was considered an influential force in the ’80s- and ’90s-era Davis and San Francisco music scenes. Miller died earlier this year on April 15, at age 53 and left behind a wife and two daughters. His cause of death has not been released.

Now, members from all of Miller’s groups in addition to other local musicians, including Mitch Easter, Jackson Griffith and Allyson Seconds, are convening on Saturday, July 20, at downtown Sacramento’s Shine for a tribute show.

Nan Becker, a keyboardist in ALRN and an early incarnation of Game Theory, remembered her late friend with admiration.

“I’ve known Scott since I was 10 years old, and he was my brother’s [drummer Jozef Becker from Game Theory, Loud Family and Thin White Rope] best friend,” she said. “He [followed] music like some people would follow baseball, which he also did. He had the most incredible mind that I have ever encountered.”

The bands that Miller started are a testament to not only of his encyclopedic knowledge of music, but his love of literature as well. The Game Theory album Lolita Nation references Vladimir Nabokov, and he claimed T.S. Eliot and James Joyce as his two favorite writers.

That affinity made its way into Miller’s music. A Rolling Stone review of Lolita Nation likened it to “Big Star with lyrics written by Thomas Pynchon”—a near-perfect

encapsulation of the sound of Game Theory and Loud Family. (To hear Miller’s work, all of Game Theory’s albums are available to stream at www.loudfamily.com/game.html.)

In 2006, Miller took a hiatus from music making after the release of What If It Works?—a collaboration between the Loud Family and Sacramento expat Anton Barbeau— and turned to writing a blog. His posts were wildly entertaining and had a huge following of musicians and fans. There, Miller reflected on the songs he loved and wrote about them in a style that was part confessional journal and part music critic, choosing a handful of songs from a specific year, ranging from 1957 to 2009, and explaining why he loved those songs, pointing out details that only deep listener and a lifelong fan would hear. Soon, he was approached to compile these lists into a book, and in 2010, Music: What Happened? (125 Records, $15) was released to widespread acclaim.

Sacramento writer and musician Jackson Griffith says Miller was as talented a critic as he was a musician.

“I think he [was] fucking brilliant,” said Griffith. “His insights [were] completely original. He basically [wrote] what he [thought].”

That’s not always the case, Griffith added.

“With music critics, a lot of people are always looking over their shoulder to see what someone else is saying. I read one of his pieces—it was about a Kanye West and Jay-Z record—it was quite droll, and it seemed like he was giving props to them, but if you read in between the lines, it was like, ‘Whoa!’ I thought it was very well-done.”

Nan Becker Alternative Learning and Game Theory The tribute show will highlight the late musician’s body of work. Becker, now residing in Wisconsin, has found herself behind a keyboard relearning ALRN and Game Theory songs, as it’s been almost 30 years since she’s last appeared on a stage.

So, how does it feel playing these songs again?

“That’s a huge question. I’ve been trying to figure that out for weeks. I’ve admired Scott’s music since I was about 19 years old, and it still blows me away,” she said.

“He was an amazing songwriter, an amazing lyricist. ... He had the simplest ideas that could express the profoundest thoughts,” she said. “He was wonderful at being able to string words together in an original way.” Ω

sounds like music made by 16 year olds who just barely know how to tune their instruments, though, surely, this is a ruse. Ginn was named No. 99 on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists: David Fricke’s Picks.” Punk rock won’t seem to die without a fight.

Word to your papa: Speaking of catching up with acts of yesteryear, or yester-decades, the GrandMothers of Invention will make a stop at Assembly (1000 K Street) on Saturday, July 20.

The lineup includes Don Preston, who played with Frank Zappa’s backing band, the Mothers of Invention from 1966 to 1974, and Napoleon Murphy Brock, who played with the band from 1974 to 1984. Pay some respect: In 2007, Dirty Projectors released Rise Above as an attempt to remake Black Flag’s 1981 debut studio-album Damaged purely from memory, which, as far as I can remember, was close enough for its intention to be recognized. Whether you’re a pop fan or a punk rocker, pay respect to the legacy that continues to influence the world beyond genre lines when Black Flag itself stops by Ace of Spades (1417 R Street) on Monday, July 22. Henry Rollins has since moved on to pursuits like original poetry, but band founder and guitarist Greg Ginn is still there, along with one of the group’s many lead vocalists over the years, Ron Reyes. The group is touring with some new material off its album Down in the Dirt, which was released just a few months back. Oui, Le Sac: The Paris of America, that’s what they call Sacramento, and is it so far-fetched (besides the really obvious stuff)? After all, we’ve got multiple places to buy crepes, more independent coffee shops than Starbucks on the grid, and, for dessert, democracy. We also drink a lot of wine, though, honestly, the local stuff far outshines the imports. So, why not celebrate Bastille Day as Midtown did this past Sunday? OK, so there wasn’t as much raucous hoo-ha as usually takes place on Cinco de Mayo, but so long as we’re celebrating other nation’s holidays, let’s let it all hang out. This year’s celebration, held in The Handle District, mostly consisted of the businesses on L Street between 18th and 19th streets setting tables in front of their establishments and vending small bites in exchange for cash. Pretty American, but the possibilities are there! Maybe next year there can be a champagne garden, a Serge Gainsbourg cover band, and a fondue after-party.

Also possible: Le Tour de Grid for cyclists, a pop-up Louvre installation for the artistes, baguette dueling fought three on three—or Musketeer style—for the kids. Speaking of which, since we’re not tolerating old-fashioned shootouts for Gold Rush Days, maybe we can at least spice up our Bastille party with some historically accurate reenactments, such as the beheading of our political adversaries. Vive la France!

Singer, songwriter, guitarist, teacher and painter, Reed recently recorded an album with Hammond featuring the traditional songs—think Appalachian style— that she teaches and performs, plus some originals. On songs like “River” and “Cuckoo,” Reed proves that she knows how important voice is to communicating story. If you’re a punk-rock aficionado looking to complete a respectable record collection, Black Flag best be on the shelf. Whether it was Black Flag with Keith Morris at the mic or with Henry Rollins and his angst-driven vocals throughout the Damaged album, Black Flag was an innovator of the West Coast punk wave throughout its early career.

After calling it quits in ’86, with a brief reunion stint in 2003, these pioneers of punk are back at it again with a 2013 reunion, featuring Ron Reyes on vocals, Dave Klein on bass, Gregory Moore on drums, PUNK and founding member and primary songwriter Greg Ginn on guitar.

When En Vogue was in its prime in the early ’90s, I was about 6—just the right age to be R&B exposed to “Free Your Mind,” “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” and, eventually, the group’s collaboration with Salt-N-Peppa, “Whatta Man.” Formative stuff. It’s been more than 20 years since, and I’m only now realizing “Don’t Let Go (Love)” is basically the sonic equivalent of Anna Karenina, and any dramatic sensibilities I might posses, for better and for worse, can largely be traced back to that time. Eilen Jewell’s voice sounds like it might come from a smoky bar just short of closing time, her sultry croon enough to raise the barometric pressure. The jazzy countryblues style of her first few albums recalls Jolie Holland and Billie Holiday. Like Holland, Jewell has moved beyond narrow nostalgia to embrace a wider palette. A rockabilly flavor pops up on 2009’s Sea of Tears and she explores torchy cabaret-blues during 2011’s Queen of the FOLK/BLUES Minor Key, with a Loretta Lynn tribute album in between. —Tokin’ Tommy the Traveler Let me first say that there is no such thing as a bad hemp fest. Anytime people gather to peacefully celebrate the beauty and wonder that is the cannabis plant, a good time is sure to be had by all.

The West Coast has a ton of great events this year.

In fact, you could plan a month-and-a-half of hempfest fun. Let’s take a look: BEALUM Olympia Hempfest, July 27 and 28. Celebrating 10

Perhaps you will climax your involvement with a situation that has made big demands on you. I suspect that during this time of completion, you will have major mixed feelings, ranging from sadness that a chapter of your story is coming to an end, to profound gratification at how much you have grown during this chapter.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): What’s

your favorite sin, Scorpio? I’m talking about the mischievous vice or rebel tendency or excessive behavior that has taught you a lot. It may be the case that now and then this transgressive departure from normalcy has had redeeming value, and has even generated some interesting fun. Perhaps it puts you in touch with a magic that generates important changes, even if it also exacts a toll on you. Whatever your “favorite sin” is, I’m guessing that you need to develop a more conscious and mature relationship with it.

The time has come for it to evolve.

Under the gun James “Danger” Harvey was born in 1980 in Alaska, where he lived in a log cabin built by his father. Since moving with his mother to the Sacramento area in 1987, he’s worked as a junkyard puller, homebuilder and stripclub bouncer. But art was always his calling, and since he transitioned into tattooing, Harvey’s been trying to bring a honed artistic aesthetic to the skill. He’s also a talented multimedia visual artist, and starting this week, Harvey will appear on the third season of Spike TV’s tattoocompetition series Ink Master, which airs on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. He sat down in his studio to chat with SN&R about prison tattoos, beautiful art, and his clients’ gross and weird conversations.

How’d you get on Ink Master?

My client. Her name is Taylor. And she sent me the link on my phone, and I’m like, “You know, she’s going through the trouble to send me the link. I’m going to go ahead and do it.”

So, I saw the different ways to enter.

And it was way past the time that I could do a live casting call. So I called [a friend], and he came in with a camera, and we started at the front door, and in one pass, walked in, and I did my spiel.

They had a list of questions you had to answer in three minutes and 30 seconds.

I edited the footage myself and emailed it off to them at 9 p.m. I got a phone call at noon the next morning, and they’re like, “We’ll set up a Skype [chat].”

And I bought a camera and learned how to Skype.

I heard you did prison tattoos for the show.

Yeah. … [They were] single-needle tattoos. So we had to go into this [with] just one needle. It’s absolutely a thin, hairline needle. ... But in prison, they don’t use tattoo needles, they use guitar strings. And so, we’re using something that’s even thinner than what they use in prison, which makes it harder to use, and a lot of us had never used a single needle before. It’s not something that you normally tattoo with professionally, because you can go in too deep, and the line will blow out and blow up, and you can scar people. My guy was really cool.

I ended up tattooing him, and he was happy with his piece.

Other jobs you’ve had?

I started off doing skill-set jobs: carpentry, plumbing. I think my first job was [at a] McDonald’s [inside a] Walmart in Folsom. I was 14.

I think tattooing is my craziest job.

Just everything that it includes that I do. I don’t just tattoo. I consider it [as] I make art, I make pretty things. I make beautiful things for people. If somebody wants a skull with its face torn off, it’s still beautiful to them.

things. I have people that see my Marilyn Monroe paintings, and they think that I’m the best ever at a Marilyn Monroe tattoo. And I have people who come to me and are like, “Man, I love your evil [biomechanical art] work.” So, I think different people view me as a specialist in different things, and that’s why they come to me. You can look at my work and tell that I did it, I think. But it varies, I do a little bit of anything.

Craziest tattoo story?

How’d you get into the field ?

I’ve always been an artist. And in the tattoo industry, I see a lot of tattooers who aren’t artists. And I don’t understand why you’d choose an artistic profession if you can’t draw and you’re not artistically driven.

I didn’t grow up always wanting to be a tattoo artist. I really never gave it a second thought. I had a few tattoos. Never had one that wasn’t in a shop by a good artist. Just because I am an artist. I’m not going to have someone do crap on me.

What’s your tattoo style?

I don’t know. ... I’d like to think that I don’t specialize in something. I’d say that’s for the viewer to decide. I have people that come to me for different

I’ve never had anybody pass out on me, but I’ve had people scream and yell.

You hear the craziest stuff when you tattoo. Especially women. A large percentage of my clientele are all women.

And you get two girls there, and you’re tattooing them, and they’re talking to each other—women say some shit. They just say the grossest, nastiest stuff to each other. It’s like the nastiest conversation you can have with your buddies doesn’t compare to what girls talk about. I think just the conversations that happen during tattooing and the relationships that spawn between people—not physical relationships, but just talking—because I’m tattooing you for 100 hours. So I get to know you and your life story. ... It’s really entertaining. Ω
