On beer and NIMBys Citizens Against Alcohol Manufacturing in Midtown is not a joke. It’s a new neighborhood group that recently filed a lawsuit against the city of Sacramento. Over beer smells.

CAAMM activists are upset about a proposed new brewery at R and 26th streets, which the planning commission approved last month. The lawsuit claims that the city needs to do an environmental impact report of the proposed spot.

“An EIR for a brewery?” you ask.

Well, neighbors and property owners say strange brewing odors—one resident likened the scent to “rotten eggs” on a local TV newscast—will permeate surrounding blocks. The group is also worried about traffic, of course.

My take? I have another acronym for CAAMM: NIMBY. The “not in my backyard” contingent is in full effect recently, from the neighborhoods of McKinley Park and East Sacramento to southeast Midtown near the Newton Booth area.

I understand wanting to preserve our great neighborhoods. But let’s lay off the beer fumes for a minute and look at the city from 30,000 feet: What do we want Sacramento to be in five, 10, 20 and 50 years?

I surely don’t want more suburban sprawl or more epic strip malls and Cordova Hills-type projects. I want urban density, people living in the central city and along abutting transit corridors. Riding light rail, shopping at Midtown boutiques and, yes, drinking locally brewed suds.

If Sacramento is going to be a sustainable region that adapts to climate change, its urban residents need to accept new, unprecedented growth and the accompanying hospitality.

Including a little ol’ brewery.

Speaking of which: I’ve lived around the corner from Rubicon Brewing Company for nearly seven years; the aroma of malt-and-grain mash ... wonderful!

Addressing Trauma in Youth

I

n communities with persistent poverty, violence and addiction, constant exposure to these problems often give rise to trauma in young people. Reaching youth early can move them from surviving to thriving and offer additional benefits to family and community.

“Research has shown certain areas of the brain related to memory, emotional regulation and impulse control are deeply affected by traumatic events, resulting in delayed development or impaired functioning,” says Melissa Bayne, Ph.D., the manager of Youth Development Programs at WellSpace Health.

“VIOLENCE BEGETS RETALIATORY VIOLENCE AND INCREASES FAMILY CONFLICT. OFTENTIMES, WHEN TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCES HAPPEN TO ONE PERSON, WE SEE A RIPPLE EFFECT IN THE FAMILY.” - Melissa Bayne, Ph.D, Manager of Youth Development Programs at WellSpace Health. .

Bayne runs the Sacramento Violence Intervention (SVI) program, which serves

victims ages 15-25 who have been shot, stabbed or otherwise physically assaulted.

“Early intervention is key. When the brain is still developing, it has the capacity to learn novel ways of accommodating deficiencies in its own development,” she says.

“Providing appropriate care early on gives the young person’s brain its best chance at recovery.”

WellSpace uses trauma-informed care (TIC), a relatively new approach that changes the care paradigm from one that asks the client, “What’s wrong with you?” to one that asks, “What happened to you?”

“This question in and of itself increases the efficacy of our treatments,” Bayne says. “It enhances rapport and increases a sense of safety. The openness to behavioral change and treatment is higher when youth are treated with compassion and understanding.”

Failing to make such a change in perspective can cause providers to misperceive traumainduced behavior as defiant, which only perpetuates social disparity and stigma.

When youth are adversely affected, families and communities are also impacted.

“Violence begets retaliatory violence and increases family conflict,” Bayne explains.

“Oftentimes, when traumatic experiences happen to one person, we see a ripple effect in the family.” For example, if a youth is shot leaving the house to go to school, Bayne says other family members may develop the same fear of leaving the house.

For this reason, WellSpace sometimes accepts into its program friends and family members who have higher risks for injury themselves and involvement in retaliatory violence, which the SVI Program attempts to pre-empt.

With a new BRAIN Initiative from the White House, President Obama’s call for a national dialogue on mental illness and the extension of mental health services to millions of Americans, public awareness regarding mental health is unprecedented.

BUILDING HEALTHY COMMUNITIES In 2010, The California Endowment launched a 10-year, $1 billion plan to improve the health of 14 challenged communities across the state. Over the 10 years, residents, community-based organizations and public institutions will work together to address the socioeconomic and environmental challenges contributing to the poor health of their communities.

As part of the President’s Dialogue, Bayne will participate in Creating Community Solutions – Sacramento, a July 20 forum to give citizens the opportunity to address community mental health concerns and priorities, particularly as concerns youth.

“I am proud to say that Sacramento is owning the care of its kids,” Bayne adds.

“They come in as crusty little bulbs, but we add enough water and they blossom.”

Boo NIMBYs, yes McKinley Village Re: “Is McKinley Village smart urban infill housing—or a traffic nightmare?” by Nick Miller (SN&R News, June 20): The issues are not increased traffic or flood risks. The issue is NIMBY: not in my backyard. The snobs in East Sacramento want to pull up the letter of drawbridge, satisfied the week that they got theirs, and no one else can have it. Introducing the increased-risk-of-flooding argument is amusing at best and asinine at its worst.

Sacramento, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is the No. 1 at-risk area in the country. Another hole in the levee is hardly going to increase [the chances] of the East Sac high siders getting their precious feet wet. Build it!

Record store was an oasis Re “Ghosts of record-shopping past” by Rachel Leibrock (Editor’s Note, June 20): Shortly after gaining admission to University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law, I took a road trip to see Sacramento for myself to try to surmise whether I’d feel comfortable there for three years. All day, I listened in the car to my

Creedence Clearwater Revival cassette tapes. The dark, humid summer Delta day and the Oak Park campus scared me a little, but I concluded that the whole matter might work out OK when I discovered the flagship Tower Records store nearby.

During my law-school years, I relied upon cultural oases like Tower, Dimple Records and The Beat for replenishment and solace.

I thought they were all rather great, and I regularly immersed myself in each of them.

My love of music was one of my secret weapons for surviving the real law-school experience.

Now, Tower Records and The Beat are gone. Long live Dimple and everything else that’s left of the mortar-and-concrete music retailers in town. I know of online ordering and downloading, but I just don’t see how the continual loss of record stores and bookstores portends anything good for our society and culture.

Don’t demonize smokers Re “Should Sacramento ban outdoor smoking at bars?” by Nick Miller (SN&R Midtown&Down, June 20): First of all, I think it’s terrible that you demonize smoking. Just because you

don’t smoke doesn’t mean that the rest of the world, or the rest of the people out in public, shouldn’t have the right to do so.

If you sit down next to somebody who [is] a smoker, you can ask them politely to move. …

My wife is not a smoker, I am; that doesn’t make me someone that is bad or should lose his freedom ... because you have a problem with someone who does smoke. I don’t drink; should I demand that the people next to me not drink when I’m out in public because I don’t like the smell or it looks gross to me? Drinking has caused many more problems than smoking ever has. We don’t see people demonize drinking, we don’t see people saying that drinking is something that needs to be banned. But all we want to just focus on [are] the dirty smokers.

Being a nonsmoker’s almost a fad these days, so people can feel good about themselves. Sure, there are health problems that arise from smoking. Sure, smoking is not the best for you. But it’s a person’s choice. Your choice not to smoke it is your choice. Everybody has the right to an opinion, but when you make it about how gross somebody is because of the way they choose to live their lives, that makes your reporting irresponsible. Shame on you.

Will the new Sacramento Kings arena and development dollars displace downtown’s lower-income residents?

In with the arena, out with the poor?

Our writer looks at how revitalization might impact low-income downtown Sacramento.

The west end of the K Street Mall certainly has its own flavor. by On a weekday afternoon, middle-aged Dave Kempa and elderly Sacramentans, many of whom live in the nearby Sequoia, Marshall or d a v e k@ news r eview.c om Capitol Park hotel residences for lowwage earners, line the sidewalk of the 800 block, waiting for the light rail or simply chatting away the afternoon against the street’s new murals.

A block west, the Sacramento Downtown Plaza mall awaits partial destruction to make way for the proposed new Kings sports arena. When construction begins, many people hope the rest of the K Street corridor, which is now being branded as “The Kay,” will transform: new businesses taking over dusty, empty buildings; and nice restaurants and shops catering to arena clientele.

But what will this mean for the neighborhood’s lower-income residents? Will living expenses go up?

Will residences like the Marshall Hotel or Hotel Sequoia still exist on a revitalized K Street as they do today, providing shelter for low-income residents?

Or will the working class be displaced, pushed off the grid as revitalization cash flows in?

The Sacramento Housing Alliance began talking three weeks ago regarding the future of the neighborhood’s affordable housing. Its conclusion: More information is required.

Two blocks east of the Marshall is the Capitol Park Hotel for the elderly, and the Sequoia, of course, is located on K Street itself.

While housing advocates remain tight-lipped on the topic, Marshall Hotel partner Pete Noack talked to SN&R last month about the building’s future. “We’ve been talking to the city for a long, long time,” he said. “We do have plans.”

William Burg Sacramento historian, on whether the arena will spur downtown development According to Noack, his group would like to do a historic rehabilitation of the hotel, “with a very good adaptive reuse of the property that will fit into what downtown needs and wants.”

It is unclear what that would mean for the hotel’s poorer residents. If, in fact, the building is remodeled in a way that does not serve the current occupants, it will be up to the city to ensure that at least 712 hotel-residence units remain in operation within city limits.

Apartments in the new 7th & H Street Housing Community will compensate for a few of the possible units lost, but as downtown property rates go up in the coming years, city officials will have to pay attention to how the Capitol Park and Sequoia hotels’ owners proceed with their properties.

According to Joe Donlin with Strategic Actions for a Just Economy, or SAJE, the impacts of a new arena can vary from city to city, though there is a sort of template on things to consider: There is often an immediate impact on land values, for instance, and in some cities, development can affect neighborhood housing.

“Then you have to ask about the jobs,” said Donlin. “Are they displacing any jobs that are important to the community? Are they replacing them with fewer jobs? Are they replacing them with lower-wage jobs?”

For example: As plans for downtown Los Angeles’ Staples Center—which houses the L.A. Lakers and Clippers, among other sports teams and events— solidified more than a decade ago, SAJE and dozens of other concerned organizations banded together. The group went toe-to-toe with Staples billionaire owners Philip Anschutz and Rupert Murdoch in an effort to make sure

working-class downtown Los Angeles residents were not adversely affected by the new arena.

In 2001, their coalition signed the Community Benefits Agreement with the arena company, which, according to SAJE’s website, “[required] the developers to include affordable housing, living wage jobs, local hiring, parks and more in their $1 billion, 4 million square foot LA Sports and Entertainment District.”

Would Sacramento benefit from a similar effort, organizing advocacy and labor to make sure that working-class residents are not displaced by the effects of arena development?

Sacramento historian William Burg certainly agrees that economic diversity is key to a healthy neighborhood, but he’s not convinced that a new arena will succeed in “revitalizing” downtown.

“It’s the same way they’ve been trying to revitalize downtown since 1960,” Burg said. He believes that it’s not suburban visitors that will reinvigorate the neighborhood, but a smarter approach to housing.

The central-city population has plummeted since 1950, and Burg said that the upcoming housing developments like those slated for the rail yards will do more for the area than any arena could. Ω

The Sacramento State University education professor had been through by Raheem the academia-spawned meat grinder F. The vaunted academic conference—intended as a platform to present thrilling new breakthroughs in research—had grown as stale as hotelchain toast.

“Super frustrating” is how Garzitto-Michals put it.

“It’s a great moneymaker for conference folks, but it doesn’t necessarily produce something that you’re proud of,” she told SN&R. “I found the best conversations were taking place in the margins.”

Garzitto-Michals started looking to widen those margins.

Fast-forward to last week inside one of the Midtown “unoffices” at The Urban Hive: Garzitto-Michals and seven fellow disenchanted conference vets debated the future of education during an international “microsummit.”

She billed this first-ever meeting of like minds as a smaller, more interactive version of academic gatherings, one where bright men and women aren’t simply regurgitating research data to bleary-eyed academics with no real influence over policy. In preparation, she researched other summits and think tanks, and cast a wide net—this summit’s attendees hail from New York, Brazil, Canada, Africa and the United Kingdom—for educators who shared her frustration and goals.

One of those individuals is Tony Reeves. An online-learning educator and technologist at the University for the Creative Arts in the United Kingdom, Reeves bumped into Garzitto-Michals at an intersection on his way to a London conference in January. The two began chatting and bonded over their shared dissatisfaction for what Reeves termed the “broadcast model” of conferences, where the audience sits quietly and receives information but isn’t necessarily engaged by it.

At the four-day microsummit organized by Garzitto-Michals and education researcher Patrick Blessinger, however, Reeves said the

group engaged in spirited debates about what future summits should look like and how to break down the silos that separate academia from government and business.

“This has been the most productive conference, if you can call it that, that I’ve been to,” Reeves told SN&R. The summit, which wrapped up June 22, had two basic purposes: to find an international sustainability project for participants to collaborate on, and to make darn sure each attendee organizes their own summit in the near future.

Think of it like a pyramid scheme for brainiacs. But with the guiding principle of creating sustainable communities.

As of now, the first of these projects involves building libraries in rural Ghana, from where one of the attendees hails. But Garzitto-Michals was quick to note that it’s not all about Western nations helping out poor, old Africa. It’s about exchanging good ideas, and creating the online infrastructure to do so.

“Their [environmental] footprint is smaller than ours,” Garzitto-Michals noted. “We can learn from them.”

Learning from others looks to be a central part of the budding microsummit process. On June 19, the group of eight toured the state Capitol, and two days later, the group caravanned to Palo Alto for meetings at Hewlett Packard and the Google campus.

Patricia Lychak, academic manager of online learning at the Algonquin College in Ottawa, Canada, hoped summiters would come away with partnership opportunities. “We’re becoming our own resource group,” she told SN&R. “We’ve become a global community of learners.”

Each attendee is supposed to go home and organize his or her own microsummit, and the participants at those summits are supposed to do the same. And on and on.

It’s too early to say whether the idea catches on like Garzitto-Michals hopes, or whether this same small band of mostly online educators ends up rotating summit-hosting duties.

“It’s kind of like an Italian dinner table, where we all bring our strengths,” Garzitto-Michals explained.

“And how much we decide to eat of each piece is up to us.” Ω

Why have you made this a new priority for this office?

It’s just part and parcel of who I am.

I came from a family with parents who came to this country with no money. They worked really hard. I think they’re representative of most Americans, and part of this is that it would have been a lot easier for my parents if they had access to financial knowledge.

And when there’s a lack of knowledge, of basic financial literacy, what happens?

You have quite a few who failed, obviously, when you witness what happened with the mortgage market. ... That’s why we want to get individuals separate from those who have a financial interest to participate in [literacy] and to identify the best practices. The participants, the programs, how do we move people forward—I don’t think there is anything that is a community model, a state model, a national [model] on how we do this.

If I purposely write a check that I know I don’t have the funds for— a couple hundred bucks—to pay my rent or whatever, I can go to jail. But financial institutions have committed, seemingly, much more egregious ongoing offenses, and so

Here’s my issue: During the last financial crisis, you had people that made decisions that put not only their institution [and] their customers in harm’s way, they [also] put this nation’s financial foundation in harm’s way. Basically, the government provided a backstop and didn’t do enough to challenge that leadership, and much of that leadership remained in place. You basically serve as a backstop for those who engage in risky practices, and now, a lot of those people who engage in risky practices are upset that government is providing greater regulations. We needed to hold those people accountable, and there is something deficient in the system where you couldn’t take out those people engaged in those horrible practices, and now a lot of them are pushing the edge, trying to return us to those ugly days. Arena deal getting real Last year, when the city and former Sacramento Kings owners the Maloofs got down to the brass tacks of predevelopment dollars for the new arena, the deal fell apart.

But this past Tuesday, city council was poised to approve $6.5 million in predevelopment funding for the downtown Kings arena with nary a hiccup.

The monies, which will come from city-parking funds and revenue from the sale of the Sheraton Grand Hotel, won’t go toward actual hard construction costs just yet. Some $2 million goes toward consultants, advisers, analysts and legal assistants. Because you can’t build a new arena without millions in consulting fees, apparently.

When city council approves the final financing and construction agreements for the arena, the remaining $4.5 million or so will go to building the project. (Nick Miller)

Cops love smartphones Johnny Law won’t get off his smartphone. The multiplatform gizmo version of a Swiss Army knife has become all the rage with Sacramento police agencies looking to post various events on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, including bomb scares and roadblocks, town-hall meetings and cute policedog pictures.

And last week, the Sacramento Police Department announced its smartphone obsession with the launch of a mobile iPhone application (sorry, Droid users, you’ll have to wait) allowing users to contact 911, text a complaint, view photos of missing persons and the most wanted, and access various other content having to do with the capital-city cops— like episodes of Cops featuring Sacto officers.

Perhaps more useful, the app gives access to the department’s new virtual neighborhood-watch program Nextdoor, named after the social-networking website that’s hosting it.

The virtual neighborhood watches that residents set up can only be accessed by residents of the same neighborhood, who have to provide their names and residential information to participate, said police spokeswoman Officer Michele Gigante.

The department and Nextdoor will partner on eight community meetings beginning this week to roll out the program.

How we spend food stamps Where and how do Sacramentans spend their food-stamp dollars?

The California Department of Social Services released statistics to SN&R recently outlining the types of establishments in which Sacramento County residents, and Californians in general, spend their CalFresh dollars.

From June 1, 2012, to May 31, 2013, county residents redeemed a little more than $360 million in Electronic Benefit Transfer—or EBT—dollars, with 95.3 percent of this money going to grocery stores, 4.6 percent to convenience stores, .04 to restaurant-meal programs and just .03 percent to farmers markets.

This breakdown is largely similar to the averages brought in by all of California, whose residents redeemed more than $7.2 billion dollars in that time frame.

The restaurant-meals program for the state came in at almost 17 times the rate of Sacramento. This program is only offered to homeless, elderly and disabled benefit recipients, and eligibility varies by county.

While the state farmers-market rate comes in a shave higher than Sac County, recent numbers may suggest some headway for the region. County farmers markets in 2012 processed $72,498 in CalFresh sales, while the most recent 12-month time frame shows $115,567 in transactions. (Dave Kempa)

Yet California legislative history over the past quarter century shows 14 Democratic and Republican legislators, lobbyists and others convicted in a federal-corruption investigation that came to light in 1988 for soliciting campaign contributions outside the lines.

Even lawmakers so square they make Ozzie and Harriet seem like perversion freaks scrutinize their contribution lists for anything potentially “wrong.” Unfamiliar donors are investigated. Votes are cataloged. The substance of all legislation voted on is examined—often for the first time.

Searches are made for any public statements about voting for another lawmaker’s bill if only certain amendments were made. Sounds benign, except it’s vote trading, an everyday Capitol occurrence that’s also a felony, should prosecutors wish to bring charges.

Again, even those in no danger of subpoena behave this way. Why? Well, because a large segment of the public believes politicians are crooks, unless they prove otherwise, and that the way their elected officials conduct business—even when 100 percent legal—often looks shady.

There’s never been anything subtle about fundraising.

“California’s rookie class of lawmakers campaigned on a pledge

to clean up the Capitol, but so far they have been as busy as their more seasoned colleagues vacuuming up campaign contributions from special interests.” So begins a March 13, 1995, article on legislative fundraising in the San Francisco Chronicle. Then Senate President Pro Tem Bill Lockyer, a Hayward Democrat, said later in the story: “Actual illegal practices are rare.

There were a few bad apples in the building, but they got turned into applesauce by federal prosecutors (several years ago),” Lockyer said, referring to the aforementioned FBI sting. “What we need to respond to is an appearance of impropriety.”

Lockyer is now state treasurer and preparing to leave public service in January 2015. Apparently, the Legislature isn’t in rapidresponse mode.

The article says a popular fundraising strategy “is to list which committees a legislator is on—a reminder to lobbyists of the subject areas the lawmaker can influence.”

More than 18 years later, lots of legislators, including Sen. Kevin de León, a Los Angeles Democrat, still do the same thing.

Beneath his name on a recent invitation to contribute to his re-election, de León identifies himself as “Chair, Senate Appropriations Committee.”

Most, if not all, recipients of de León’s fundraising missive have measures either pending before or wending their way to de León’s committee.

Lobbyists know this. They earn their living navigating the complexities of the legislative process. If anyone knows all-too-well the function of the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations and who the chairman is, it’s members of the “third house.”

Nonetheless, de León includes this already well-known information.

Is its inclusion a way to subliminally increase receptiveness to becoming a “patron” at $2,500 or a “sponsor” at $4,100? To insinuate the tightly woven nexus between chairperson and final committee action? To tease into consciousness any anxiety over the outcome of major issues pending with the committee, increasing the odds a suitable investment will be made?

Of course not. That would be feloniously wrong.

And way too subtle. Ω

SAME THREE STAGES, BRAND NEW NAME

State of the secretary of state On the future of elections Debra Bowen’s first year as California’s secretary of state—the person we elected to oversee and safeguard our elections—was literally a “profile in courage.”

In 2007, her first year in office, she ordered a top-to-bottom review of California’s voting machines. The uncovering of security flaws led to the decertification of several electronic voting systems and the ARvin adoption of less flashy but more reassurby CoSmo G ing optical-scan machines. That earned cos mog@ newsrev iew.c om Bowen the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award in 2008, for “her bold leadership and steadfast resolve to protect the integrity of the vote.”

Her administration has been somewhat quieter—some would say less courageous—since.

Her office has been faulted by some for the long delays in implementing the new VoteCal statewide voter database, which, in turn, has delayed changes to improve California’s dismal voter participation rates—like same-day voter registration and voter preregistration for high schoolers.

The Cal-Access campaign-financing and lobbying database keeps crashing, which Bowen complains is because of a lack of money—to no one’s satisfaction.

It took too much coaxing and complaining by good-government groups and California newspapers earlier this year to get Bowen to provide raw campaign-finance data and allow those orgs to make the info available in more user-friendly formats.

A while back, The Sacramento Bee editorialists questioned her commitment to the gig after an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 2011, saying, “She needs to do more than occupy the position.” Ouch.

Bowen is terming out next year, and already several candidates are promising to rejuvenate the office. Democratic state Sens. Leland Yee and Alex Padilla, and Sacramento activist Derek Cressman, have all announced their candidacies.

As has Republican Pete Peterson, who heads up the Davenport Institute at Pepperdine University.

There isn’t space here to do an in-depth roundup of each candidate. Yee sponsored online-voter-registration laws and is a champion of transparency. He was the only Democratic senator to oppose the Legislature’s wrongheaded attempt to undermine the California Public Records Act. Padilla has also sponsored legislation making it easier to register to vote, including a law requiring the state to make it possible for voters to check their registration status and absentee-ballot information online. The fact that California lacks such a system is one reason that California ranked 48th out of 50 states in administration of elections—just above Alabama and Mississippi—according to report by the Pew Center on the States and the California Voter Foundation.

This being a local column, Bites wants to highlight the candidacy of the local guy, Cressman. He has worked for the last couple decades with good government organizations, such as Common Cause and the Public Interest Research Groups, and says the state needs an elections expert to modernize California’s elections machinery.

The senators might seem to have an advantage in a statewide election campaign. But Cressman says he’s not worried about Padilla and Yee’s name recognition. “Most voters can’t even name their own state senator, let alone someone from someone else’s district.” By contrast, his supporters are “people who already care about issues central to this race.”

Bites would welcome a candidate who makes some noise.

Along with fixing Cal-Access and getting VoteCal properly implemented, he wants to reboot the state’s voter guide and make it into a multiplatform online tool, with ballot arguments but also video, links and analysis of campaign finances. It would not only be more engaging, says Cressman, but the information also “could really level the playing field for grassroots candidates.”

Cressman says the state has a history of ridiculously expensive tech projects, but this one need not be. “When you think of YouTube, it’s not inherently expensive to use something like that.”

Three Stages is changing its name.

The new name, Harris Center for the Arts, honors Dr. Brice Harris, Chancellor Emeritus of the Los Rios Community College District.

Cressman is also making Citizens United and the corrosive influence of campaign cash a central issue in his campaign. Around the country, Common Cause has been pushing state and local measures calling for a U.S. Constitutional amendment to clarify that corporations are not people, overturn Citizens United and allow states to limit political expenditures. Voters in Los Angeles, Richmond and San Francisco have approved measures instructing their congressional reps to support an amendment. Cressman says as secretary of state, he would hold hearings on the issue and make sure elected representatives are following voter instructions.

That’s exactly the reason Cressman shouldn’t be elected secretary of state, says Republican political consultant Tony Quinn. He complained on the political blog Fox&Hounds Daily that Cressman’s interest in Citizens United shows he will be an “ideological” secretary of state.

As if the other candidates would somehow be apolitical technicians, only there to quietly upgrade our voting infrastructure. Not a chance. Bites would welcome a candidate who makes some noise about what is currently the biggest threat to the integrity of our elections.

The next secretary of state ought to be competent and a little courageous. Ω

A broken promise “Obey the rules. Work hard. Be nice.”

Do this, and everything will be OK. You will have a roof over your head, food on the table and your family will be taken care of. Growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, I heard this message from my parents, teachers, neighbors, minister, coach and virtually every adult I knew.

L It made sense to me. And,

When I talk to young people, especially young people that share a high percentage of my DNA, I tell them the same thing. Work hard, be nice, and everything will turn out OK. But when I came of age in the early 1970s, I noticed some flies in the oatmeal of this generational message. The world was not color-blind. While this advice might work for those of us with When kids follow pigment deficiencies, it did not the rules, stay ring true for those with normal amounts of pigment. They might in school and obey the rules, work hard and be nice, but everything would not be finish college, OK for them.

Potential employers would turn they end up with them down. They might wait in a large debt they line for hours to vote. God forbid can’t afford. they were going 36 mph in a 35 mph zone. For the rest of us in the late ’60s and ’70s, the power of the message faced some serious blows during the Vietnam War. The same adults who told us to obey the rules and work hard were turning around and sending us to fight in an immoral war in Vietnam.

Today, our institutions may be a little more color-blind, and the Vietnam War is over. But again, the message is ringing hollow. When kids follow the rules, stay in school and finish college, they end up with a large debt they can’t afford. Everything does not turn out OK. More than one out of every eight students in California doesn’t graduate from high school. With the steady destruction of school activities and real job training, many students are understandably asking themselves, “Why stay in school?” Without training, they will have no future. Everything will not be OK. The same goes for our adult-school programs.

Gov. Jerry Brown says building two multibillion-dollar, 39-mile tunnels will save the Delta and bring more H20 to Californians. Sacramento County residents worry it will destroy their communities.

T

he brown water of the Sacramento River lumbers quietly downstream along the levee bank, swirling eddies and occasional surges of turbulence revealing the power of this greatest of California’s waterways. It is nearly 100 degrees in the town of Hood, about 20 minutes south of Sacramento, and the heavy sun crushes the midday hours into idleness. The streets are quiet, except for the occasional passing of a car on Highway 160, the rushing of the trees and the corners of a sign on a gate flapping in the hot wind. It reads: “STOP THE TUNNELS.” Many more of the same signs are posted along the levee roadways throughout the Delta, for a huge development plan is underway in Sacramento that, if implemented, will change this quiet agricultural region forever.

Nothing is final yet, but Gov. Jerry Brown, along with many colleagues and agricultural water users south of Stockton, hope to build a new water-diversion system: a pair of giant tunnels, each 40 feet wide and 39 miles long, that are capable of carrying away two-thirds of the Sacramento River’s water. Brown and Co. say the $25 billion-plus plan will secure water for Southern California cities and Central Valley farmers, and also restore the Delta’s troubled ecosystem.

But here in the Delta area of Sacramento County, most people want the tunnel project stopped. They say it will suck the Delta dry, destroy farming business in Northern California and kill the ecosystem.

Doug Hemly operates several hundred acres of pear orchards along Highway 160, and lives just miles south of the proposed location for the three intakes that would feed the tunnels. His grown children help operate the farm, and before him four generations of ancestors did much the same. The Hemly home is 164 years old—built in 1850 by his great-grandfather. Now, the twin tunnels threaten to demolish it.

“One of the plans I’ve heard involves taking the house,” said Hemly, 67.

“Everyone is confused by what they’re doing,” he said. “No one understands how you can improve the health of the Delta by taking water out of the Delta, rather than let it flow downstream through the Delta.

“Everyone here is scratching their heads about this.”

“They’re going to be displacing a whole lot of dirt. They’re going to be trucking it in and out of here on these little levee roads. There will be a lot of traffic. I’m afraid they’re going to foul up the whole area.”

Debbie Elliot of Courtland foresees years of dust, traffic and noise just to build the tunnels, which would start in Hood and lead almost 40 miles to the Clifton Court Forebay reservoir, basically a holding tank for the existing water pumps that serve the San Joaquin Valley.

“I’m not sure we can live with the impacts of this,” she said. “If they do this, we’re looking at 10 years of construction. I’m imagining an industrial wasteland here.”

Though Delta communities are generally aligned in opposition to the tunnels, there is

the only ones who stand to lose out and who are facing a negative event—us and the fish.”

The Department of Water Resources is leading the push for the tunnels, which are just one part of the Gov. Brown-approved Bay Delta Conservation Plan.

Nancy Vogel, a spokeswoman with the department, says the BDCP is being mischaracterized by its opponents. “This isn’t an engineering plan,” she said. “It’s a conservation plan.”

In fact, one of the BDCP’s main objectives—as mandated by a 2009 state law called the Delta Reform Act—is to help restore the Delta’s struggling ecosystem. In theory, the tunnels would do this by sending freshwater from the north Delta directly to the existing pumps near Tracy, an hour south of Sacramento. This would reduce the intake of water from the southern Delta, which serves as crucial fish habitat.

The other major goal of the BDCP is to boost water security. For example, even if a natural disaster destroyed the southern Delta’s

levees and caused a sudden flood of saltwater into the region, the northern intake of the tunnels would guarantee that fresh, drinkable water continued southward.

“I know this is hard for people to wrap their heads around, but putting the intakes north of the Delta could help struggling species, like the Delta smelt, chinook salmon, Sacramento splittail, sturgeon, etc.,” Vogel said.

As things are now, at certain times of the year, the water pumps about an hour south of Sacramento can actually make the San Joaquin River flow backward. Salmon juveniles, swimming down the Sacramento River on their journey to the sea, regularly follow this wayward current. It leads them into backwaters and sloughs, from which they usually never escape. Many are eaten by predators. Others are drawn directly toward the pumps and squashed against the screens placed there to keep the fish out. Biologists have blamed this reversedcurrent phenomenon as a serious detriment to fish populations.

Vogel says the tunnels will reduce, though not eliminate, the reverse flow.

But there’s still one major, critical question: Will more water be leaving the Sacramento River each year than currently if the tunnels are implemented?

Biologists are at work trying to understand how much water the species that live in the Delta need to survive, if not thrive—but as of now, Vogel said “nobody knows” how much water the tunnels will take.

Hemly wants several uncertainties addressed before the state moves forward with any Delta-management plan: How much water is there, who owns it, how much will be sent to Los Angeles and how much help does the ecosystem need?

“After we have those questions answered,” he said, “we can decide what to build.”

Before the gold rush, so many salmon swam upstream to spawn every year in the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers that, according to accounts from explorers and settlers, the water between the Carquinez Strait boiled with fish in the autumn, shore to shore. More than 1 million fish per year made the annual migration.

But in the 1950s and ’60s, after two powerful pumps were installed in the southern Delta, a clear correlation began to emerge, linking increased water-export rates and a steady decline of the remaining salmon.

By the 2000s, more than half of the Delta’s water was being exported.

In 2005, the pumps diverted away almost 7 million acre feet of water. The fall-run salmon population promptly crashed, bottoming out in 2009 to its all-time low of 39,000 adults. Abrupt pumping restrictions enforced after the salmon crash, combined with productive ocean conditions, seem to have had an effect, and the fall-run chinook has partially bounced back.

2002,” said Roger Thomas, a fishingboat operator in Sausalito and the chairman of the Golden Gate Salmon Association’s board. “That decline just goes to show that salmon are a sustainable resource when they have proper water and a healthy river to spawn in.”

The state’s salmon industry, worth $1.4 billion by many reports, was entirely closed by federal managers—something that had never happened before—for two years in a row in response to the depressed fish numbers. Fishermen began receiving federal financial aid.

Meanwhile, abrupt restrictions on water-export rates at crucial times of the year—when endangered winter-run salmon and Delta smelt are most vulnerable to being sucked into the pumps—took effect and remain in place today. Salmon began to recover.

Will the proposed tunnels help the Delta fish—or destroy them?

“The bottom line is, you don’t restore a hemorrhaging estuary by taking out even more water,” Jennings said. “We’ve already taken more than half of its water. No estuary in the world can survive that.”

Gov. Brown’s man at the Natural Resources Agency, reportedly said in a private conversation that “the Delta cannot be saved.”

This spurred suspicions among critics that the BDCP’s backers don’t honestly see their proposal as an environmental remedy but, rather, only as a water-delivery conveyance to serve agribusiness and southern California cities.

Already, an upstream advance of saltwater is occurring in the lower Delta. If the tunnels divert away too much of the river, ocean water could creep even farther upstream, spoiling the supply for Delta farmers.

“Saltwater intrusion terrifies us,” said Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla, the executive director of the group Restore the Delta.

The tunnels, she promises, will exacerbate the problem, and she warns that “every farm from Walnut Grove to Sacramento will be destroyed” if the governor’s plan is approved.

She said the agriculture industry of the Delta is worth $5.2 billion.

Her group has proposed alternate means of accomplishing the two coequal objectives of the Delta Reform Act: levee upgrades,

“This is very confusing for fish that are trying to go downstream,” said Moyle. “If you’re a baby salmon trying to get to the ocean, it’s very hard to find your way past the pumps.”

The tunnels, if built, have the potential to help alleviate this problem, Moyle said, and facilitate a year-round downstream flow through the Delta and out to sea.

But, according to Vogel, the pumps near Tracy will continue to draw a substantial amount of water directly out of the southern Delta—as much as 50 percent of the total volume, when combined with the new tunnels.

So, in other words, the problems afflicting this troubled ecosystem today could persist.

She added that the BDCP also includes a large wetland-restoration component that must be weighed into the pros and cons.

Bill Jennings, the executive director of the California Sport Fishing Protection Alliance, has no faith in the tunnels’ potential to benefit anyone but farmers and cities to the south who want water.

Since then, Westlands, along with 2.4 million adjacent acres served by other water agencies, has grown into some of the most productive farmland in the world. Although the area’s farmers sometimes must let their annual field crops—like melons and lettuce—go brown and dry in low-water years, they are able to take such financial hits in large part because so many have invested in almonds, one of the most lucrative crops in the state.

Jason Peltier, with the Westlands Water District, explains that “fantastic” returns on almonds give these growers a cushion against hard times. And he supports the tunnels, because they could provide greater water security by moving the intakes farther upstream, away from the southern Delta where baby salmon BEFORE

Federal scientists produced a paper in 2009 titled “What caused the Sacramento River fall Chinook stock collapse?” The authors said a rapid deterioration in “ocean conditions” played a major role but recognized that “a long-term, steady degradation of the freshwater and estuarine environment” had weakened the salmon population.

The frustration among fishermen with the agriculture industry may be easy to understand.

While salmon fishermen were completely out of work in 2008 and 2009 during the fishing closure, many farms were prospering. The state’s almond industry has set harvest and acreage records year after year. In 2011, farmers harvested 2 billion pounds of almonds worth almost $4 billion.

The Delta’s ecology, meanwhile, has steadily withered away.

For the struggling Delta, the people who live there and the farmers who grow food, there could be other, smaller solutions to their struggles. The problem, some say, is that state officials have refused to give full consideration to anything but Gov. Brown’s BDCP tunnel plan.

One alternative idea was introduced by the Natural Resources Defense Council. Commonly called the “portfolios” proposal, this plan calls for a downscaled, one-tunnel project, and strategies for farms in the San Joaquin Valley to store and reduce the use of water. The plan also calls for cities, especially in Southern California, to advance water-recycling systems that could lessen their dependence on Northern California’s water.

“One of the main problems with the BDCP is that it doesn’t create a single new drop of water,” said Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoli. He believes that water-conservation measures could lighten the strain on California’s watersheds.

Nottoli also says the portfolios plan is being essentially ignored. “[T]he state is moving toward a decision on a preferred project, even though they’re saying they’re looking at multiple options, and I don’t believe they are,” Nottoli said. “You look at the BDCP, and what you have is a tunnel-construction project. That’s their conservation plan: to build a huge pair of tunnels.” He fears the Delta could be reduced “into an industrial complex, complete with rubble heaps and muck ponds.”

Nottoli also distrusts the BDCP’s proposal to convert 100,000 acres or more of land and restore it to wetlands. Some of this acreage will need to be forcefully bought from Delta farmers.

“Why should one region of the state be sacrificed for the benefit of another?” he asked.

Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada also believes the BDCP will destroy the farms and fisheries of the Delta. In an email to SN&R, she called the BDCP “a costly and intrusive construction project promising little to no benefit to the Delta itself.”

Meanwhile, lawsuits against the state are piling up, and this litigation to stop the tunnels could put bumps in the road for the project’s proponents.

One 45-page complaint, filed by a number of water-advocacy groups on June 14, charges that

state officials have all but ignored a 2010 assessment by the State Water Resources Control Board and the Department of Fish and Wildlife, which agreed that the Sacramento River would need to be left with 75 percent of its unimpaired flow volume in order for the Delta to remain a thriving estuary.

(The agencies themselves noted that such a volume of water left to flow to sea is in fact not possible, given the multitude of uses it must serve—but the recommendation did offer an idea of how seriously thirsty the estuary’s ecosystem is now.)

“But they totally ignored those findings,” said Rogene Reynolds, a South Delta resident and a board member with Restore the Delta, one of the lawsuit’s plaintiff groups. “They actually tried to hide them.”

The BDCP’s backers have assured skeptics that water-export rates will not exceed what the ecosystem can endure. But opponents of the tunnels suspect that the powerful agricultural interests in the south are going to get more water via the tunnels than they get now—no matter what.

“You don’t agree to spend $14 billion plus operating costs if you aren’t planning on having more water,” said Jennings of the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance.

At least one Delta resident, Jim Arnold of Courtland, welcomes the tunnels.

“When I look out at this river, I see perfectly good water going downstream for nothing,” said Arnold, who owns and leases hundreds of acres of Delta farmland. “People grow food in California, and that’s much more important than saving a few fish. The salmon run doesn’t amount to a whole lot, anyway.”

Arnold’s point of view is an anomaly in a small community fiercely opposed to what is foremost a massive construction project. By some opinions, the BDCP and its tunnels are just a scheme of selling away Northern California’s wealth and losing an ecosystem in the process.

As the tunnels plan advances toward fruition, Reynolds sees both corruption and complacency among the state’s leaders.

“No one in the realm of the government, in general, has the guts to say to the water exporters, ‘You’re taking too much water. The Delta has a limit, and you’ve reached it.’” Ω

A foreign-policy writer for The New Yorker for the past decade, George Packer brings his sweeping narrative style and comprehensive journalistic skill together to create a work The New York Times book critic Dwight Garner calls “something close to a nonfiction masterpiece.” Packer spends a good deal of The Unwinding (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $27) profiling “ordinary” American citizens, but also tech moguls in Silicon Valley, Jay-Z and Newt Gingrich, which makes for a pointed contrast. The book is sobering, to say the least—a piecework depicting what’s been maimed and sometimes destroyed in pursuit of both personal power and influence on a global scale. But if Packer takes you to the bottom, it’s with the intention to incite a desire to not let the country flounder. (D.D.)

TransAtlantic by Colum McCann Beat the summer heat by enveloping yourself in the leaden gray skies of Colum McCann’s Irish homeland.

With his latest novel, McCann fans can expect more of his trademark sprawling scope that spans continents, generations, history and the Atlantic Ocean. TransAtlantic (Random House, $27) interweaves an opening triptych of novellas about historical figures— Frederick Douglass, Sen. George Mitchell and the first British pilots to complete a transatlantic flight—with shorter stories of fictional women.

Other novels might only deploy these characters as background color, but TransAtlantic treats them as the warp and woof of history. (C.D.)

World War Z by Max Brooks Based on the book written in 2006, the movie trailer for World War Z (Broadway Books, $9.99) shows pretty-faced Brad Pitt, machine gun in tow, running from zombies, Fabio hair blowing in the wind. Word to the wise: Read the book first (recently rereleased with one of those awful movie-tie-in covers). The movie places Pitt in the present action of the zombie wars, which makes for a solid action film, while Brooks’ version happens 10 years postzombie war, compiling firsthand survivor accounts into a documentary-style novel.

Brooks’ commentary on government ineptitude and humanity’s struggle to survive has been a revelation in the zombie genre, focusing a critical eye on the state of the world after a ravaging attack of cannibalistic monsters. (J.R.)

Singer is talked into going to Chiapas, Mexico, by his best friend, the son of a powerful Mexican family. Bypass titles like Watching Birdie and Love Finds a Way (these are completely made-up titles, by the way).

Opt instead for Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend (St. Martin’s Griffin, $14.99), a patient book just waiting for the right reader. Memoirs follows Budo, the imaginary friend of autistic, 8-year-old

Red Moon by Benjamin Percy I’m of the opinion that listening to an audio book usually does your imagination a slight disservice, but Red Moon (Grand Central Publishing, $25.99) is an exception: Benjamin Percy, who reads his own work for the audio version, sounds the way you might imagine the Almighty (or maybe Thor) to sound if he were hairy and bearded and takes whiskey with his whiskey. Joyland by Stephen King Carnies. Murder. Ghosts. Stephen King. Could there be a better recipe for summer reading? King gets back to his creepy roots with a new coming-of-age tale that follows Devin, a virgin investigating a murder at the amusement park where he works. King writes two ways: incredibly long, in 18 parts, or in short, novella-length stories. Joyland (Hard Case Crime, $12.95) is doable at 288 pages, and won’t take the entire summer to read. And after years of writing about people getting into car accidents, being stuck under domes and death by cellphone, it’s nice to see King back to his old spooky self. Think Stand By Me (adapted from King’s novella The Body), but with carnies. (J.R.) Ω

SCENE& HEARD Supercharged with good karma Did Sacramento citizens feel extra blessed with peace and loving kindness over the weekend? If so, that’s because the Spiritual Life Center recently hosted the latest stop for the Maitreya Heart Shrine Relic Tour. These historically important and spiritually sacred relics belonged to the Shakyamuni Buddha (the Buddha from your high-school history class).

The relics, also called ring cells, are pearl-colored minerals that remain after a Buddhist master has been cremated. Buddhists believe that these little white beads are supercharged with good karma and radiate the spiritual essence of the master.

When the relics aren’t on the road, they reside in the Aptos, California, home of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, a contemporary Buddhist master who serves as the spiritual director of the tour.

Past visitors to the Maitreya Heart Shrine Relic Tour have reported experiencing deeply moving emotional and spiritual moments in the presence of the objects, so I went to check it out for myself and encountered more than 1,000 ring-cell relics attributed to 44 masters, including Shakyamuni Buddha, his heart disciples and several saints. The items were laid out on a large altar surrounding a golden Buddha statue, along with candles, singing bowls, bells and a small prayer wheel.

Inside, I stepped up to the first station at the altar, where a small sign read “Buddha Bath Offering.” I poured a small wooden ladle of holy water over a figurine in a bowl of water. The sign prompted me to pray for eliminating negative thoughts, cultivating good deeds and helping to save all living beings.

At another station, I rang a little bell with Tibetan inscriptions and read a page from the Sutra of Golden Light.

Here, Sacramentans of all walks of life palmed their hands together and prostrated before the altar, seemingly seeking inner peace and a moment of quiet on an overcast Sunday afternoon.

At the last station, I knelt onto a pillow before the Rev. Mark Berry, a volunteer for the show. Berry showed me the relics in his stupa and explained that they once belonged to Shakyamuni Buddha, the first historical Buddha who once went by the name of Prince Siddhartha before he reached enlightenment.

The little white beads of mineral cremains rolled around on a bed of red felt placed inside the stupa. They looked like little grains of rice or Tic Tacs.

Berry placed the stupa on my head and muttered a prayer too quiet to hear. I felt the warmth of his hands radiate from the crown of my head down my neck.

I walked away from the Spiritual Life Center feeling relaxed and calm and in touch with the karmic forces of the universe—a feeling that, of course, only lasted until I got in my car and drove through the crowded parking lot.

head to a River Cats game in West Sacramento, cross the Tower Bridge, and then hang out and grab dessert in Old Sacramento. These were the simple things I often missed when I moved away to attend college in Southern California, especially since my memories associated with these activities went way back and seemed so innocent. Adding to the nostalgia, Old Sacramento goes back even further with its Time Travel Weekends (which recur throughout the summer) followed by Gold Rush Days (which happens Labor Day weekend, and features tons of dirt and hay dumped onto the streets).

The fourth annual season of the Time Travel Weekends street-theater program

begins this weekend. On the bill are streettheater performances harkening back to the gold-rush era, craft activities for kids, musical performances and Old West stage shows at the Eagle Theatre (921 Front Street).

Basically, expect to roam around and see the streets filled with jugglers, performers and costumed characters chatting you up about bandits and back-alley gambling.

OK, these weekends might be a bit cow townish and not as glamorous or modern as Southern California’s copious free outdoor summer activities, but at least they’ve got character. Victorian clothing optional.

As such, I didn’t pay enough attention to notice how starchy the food was until later on my way home. So, on my second visit, I resolved to put the starchy dishes aside and instead order more vegetables.

Upon perusing the menu, I discovered that 100 percent—no exaggeration—of the restaurant’s savory dishes contain or are almost wholly composed of some starchy ingredient. This Rating: variety of starches includes: whole lentils and HHH lentil flour, rice and rice flour, potatoes, wheat and semolina flour, and combinations of all of the above. dinner for one: $10 - $20 In other words, this restaurant may not work for those still following the Atkins diet, but, for once, my vegetarian dining pal was happy: Every dish on the menu here is vegetarian, and many are vegan.

And it’s really unfair to fault Mylapore for offering the traditional cuisine of its region, so consider it something to keep in mind, and get your daily fresh-veggie intake elsewhere.

Because there is much to like at Mylapore, H starting with the giant dosas. Dosas are ultrathin Flawed crepes with a savory filling. They range in size HH from 3-feet-long ones to 1-footers served as an haS momentS assorted platter. The standard dosa is loaded up HHH with turmeric-seasoned potatoes and onions. aPPealing Mylapore also serves a “spring” dosa filled with oniony coleslaw.

HHHH authoRitative I’m no stranger to the crunchy, hollow bite-sized snacks called pani puri, and I knew HHHHH ePiC the proper procedure is to fill them with cold potatoes and garbanzo beans and maybe a chutney or two. What I didn’t know until I asked the server, however, is that one is supposed to fill them with the accompanying mint water and try to eat the bite before any leaks out. flavorless idlis, or steamed lentil-flour cakes.

The available chutneys were a spicy tomato and a thinly grated-coconut one—a pickle chutney would have offered a welcome blast of acidity, but none was offered. Most dishes also come with a small side of sambar, a thick lentil soup.

Sambar is worth ordering as a bowl on its own. It’s creamy and comforting and within it floats cubed turnips and carrots—miles away from a pedestrian dal.

You can’t eat at an Indian restaurant without ordering something sweet—it’s just not done.

If you’re not a dessert person, have it with your meal instead, served in a glass in the form of a mango lassi. It’s a good way to counter the chilies in some of the dishes. The salty lassi is equally tasty and made with no sugar whatsoever.

A scoop of pistachio ice cream flavored with rose water is another good way to go.

Unless you are trying to starve yourself into ketosis at the hand of the late Dr. Robert Atkins, you’ll find Mylapore to be a singular addition to the Indian food of the region. And it could help you carbo-load if you’re training for a marathon. Ω

Chocolate-covered protein It’s hard to look at a chocolate-covered Probar Core Cookie Dough protein bar and not think it’s more candy than nutritional bar. However, underneath all the brown sweet stuff and layer of cookie-dough crunch are chia and flax seeds embedded in crispy rice. With 20 grams of protein, it does make a nice after-workout treat, and it’s available in three other flavors—mint chocolate, brownie, peanut butter. Find the Probar at most health-food stores, but at just about any grocery store one can find the similar Clif Builder’s bar. The texture is less gritty (no chia in this one, friends), but it’s fortified with 23 vitamins and minerals, and flavors include mint chocolate, peanut butter, vanilla almond, cookies and cream, and—holy smokes—s’mores.

tables and light wooden chairs, there’s an airy atmosphere, casual and cozy. Estelle’s offers an espresso bar and a wide assortment of teas and muffins and rolls for the breakfast crowd as well as sweets, including DayGlo macarons. For the lunch-inclined, there are soups, salads, sandwiches and meat or meatless quiche. One of the authentic touches is the spare use of condiments. The smoked salmon is enlivened by dill and the flavor of its croissant. Its tomato bisque is thick and richly flavored, and, in a nice touch, a puff pastry floats in the tureen as accompaniment. Grange Restaurant & Bar You won’t find any “challenging” dishes on this menu—just delicious local and seasonal food such as the Green Curry & Pumpkin Soup, which has a Southeast Asian flair. A spinach salad features ingredients that could be considered boring elsewhere: blue-cheese dressing, bacon, onion. But here, the sharply cheesy buttermilk dressing and the woodsy pine nuts make it a salad to remember. Grange’s brunch puts other local offerings to shame.

The home fries are like marvelously crispy Spanish patatas bravas. A grilled-ham-andGruyere sandwich is just buttery enough, and an egg-white

frittata is more than a bone thrown to the cholesterolchallenged; it’s a worthy dish in its own right. American.

Zia’s Delicatessen Zia’s Delicatessen isn’t really about trying every sandwich: It’s about finding your sandwich.

In addition to a large selection of salumi, there’s the worthy eponymous offering, served with a wedge of zucchini frittata, a slice of provolone, romaine lettuce, grainy tomato, and a simple dash of vinegar and oil that adds tang. Order it hot, so that the provolone melts into the bread. Also tasty: the hot meatball sub with small-grained, tender meatballs bathed in a thin, oregano-flecked tomato sauce that soaks into the bread. A tuna sandwich is sturdy, if not exciting. It is just mayonnaisey enough, with tiny, diced bits of celery.

A rosemary panino cotto with mozzarella could benefit from a more flavorful cheese. For a meatier option, try the Milano: mortadella, salami, Muenster; all three flavors in balance.

The turkey Viareggio has a thin spread of pesto mayo, and the smoked mozzarella accents rather than overpowers.

Midtown 24K Chocolat Cafe This cafe serves a solid, if very limited, brunch and lunch menu. One offering is

a firm wedge of frittata with a strong tang of sharp cheddar that almost but doesn’t quite jibe with the slightly spicy mole sauce on the plate.The spinach curry, made creamy by coconut milk rather than dairy, comes topped with cubes of tofu and tiny diced scallion and red bell pepper and rests atop a smooth potato cake. A side of garbanzobean salad is well-flavored with the surprising combination of mint and apricot. The place, located inside Ancient Future, has “chocolat” in the name, and chocolate is in many of the menu offerings, including a tiny cup of hot Mexican drinking chocolate, and chocolatecherry scones served crisp and hot, studded with big chunks of bittersweet chocolate and tart dried cherries. Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co. The restaurant, by the same owners as Midtown’s The Golden Bear, sports a firefighting theme (a ladder on the ceiling duct work, shiny silver wallpaper with a rat-and-hydrant motif, et al) and a bar setup that encourages patrons to talk to each other. An interesting wine list includes entries from Spain and Israel; there are also draft cocktails and numerous beers on tap. The brunch menu is heavy on the eggs, prepared in lots of ways. One option is the Croque Madame, a hamand-Gruyere sandwich usually battered with egg. This one had a fried egg and béchamel, with a generous smear of mustard inside. The mountain of

potato hash alongside tasted flavorful and not too greasy.

The menu also features pizzas and house-made pastas, but one of its highlights includes an excellent smoked-eggplant baba ganoush, which is smoky and garlicky and served with warm flatbread wedges and oil-cured olives. The bananas foster bread pudding is equally transcendent, accompanied by very salty caramel gelato, pecans and slivers of brûléed bananas. American. 1630 S St., (916) 442-4885. LowBrau This place specializes in beer and bratwursts. Both are done smashingly. The sausage is wrapped in a tight, snappy skin like a gimp suit, which gets nicely charred by the chefs.

Within it lies a beguilingly spicy and juicy piece of meat. Get it with a pretzel roll for a truly exciting experience. There are vegan options, too: The Italian, an eggplant-based brat, has a surprisingly sausagelike texture that no self-respecting carnivore will turn it down for lack of flavor. Toppings include sauerkraut, a “Bier Cheese” sauce and caramelized onions.

The idea behind Duck Fat Fries is a glorious one, yet somehow still falls short. You just expect something more when you see the words “duck fat.” The beer selection is epic. East Sac Istanbul Bistro Turkish chef Murat Bozkurt and brother Ekrem co-own this paean to their homeland, with Ekrem usually at the front of the house, infusing the space with cheer. Turkish cuisine features aspects of Greek, Moroccan and Middle Eastern flavors. The appetizer combo plate offers an impressive sampling. Acili ezme is a chopped, slightly spicy mixture of tomatoes, cucumber and walnuts that’s delicious paired with accompanying flatbread wedges. For entrees, try the borani, a lamb stew with garbanzos, carrots, potatoes and currants. The meat is very tender, while the veggies arrived nicely al dente. Also good is the chicken shish plate (souvlaki), which features two skewers of marinated grilled chicken that’s moist and succulent. There are also quite a few choices for vegetarians, including flatbread topped like pizza, with spinach and feta or mozzarella and egg. Turkish.

At Asian Café, it adds optional offal add-ons—various organ meats, entrails, et al—to three versions of the dish: beef with tripe, chicken with gizzards, or pork with pork skin. The beef salad offers a gentle respite from aggressive flavors, consisting of medium-thick chewy slices of eye of round with red bell pepper, chopped iceberg and hot raw jalapeño. The single best dish here is the nam kao tod, a crispy entree with ground pork that’s baked on the bottom of the pan with rice, then stirred and fried up fresh the next day with dried Thai chilies and scallions. South Sac Blue Moon Cafe and Karaoke In Sac, most people equate Hong Kong-style cuisine with dim sum, but this restaurant, which also features private karaoke rooms, serves up tasty, familiar food by way of rice plates, sandwiches, noodle bowls, soups and stir-fries.

A few random Japanese (ramen, fried udon), French (sweet or savory crepes), Russian (borscht), Korean (beef and kimchi hot pot) and Italian (various pastas) foods add to the feeling that whatever your cultural background, you’ll find a comfort dish from your childhood to wrap its arms around you and give you a hug. Cultural diversity aside, one of Blue Moon’s best dishes

Arden/ Carmichael Skip’s Kitchen You know you’re at an American restaurant when a cheeseburger is one of the healthiest items on the menu.

Sure enough, Skip’s Kitchen features a lot of calorie-rich items, such as fried macaroniand-cheese balls, ravioli, chicken strips, chicken wings and shrimp, plus creamy Oreo milkshakes. There are salads, too, but the best dish on the menu is the burger. All five styles (original, mushroom and Swiss, bacon and cheddar, three-cheese, and Western) are served on a brioche bun and cooked “medium,” unless otherwise specified. The kitchen offers a house-made veggie burger as well. If there’s such a thing as a “gourmet” burger that can rightfully sell for $10, this is probably it. American.

Taqueria Garibaldi One of this restaurant’s biggest pulls is its choice of meats. The chorizo is red, crispy and greasy in all the best ways.

The lengua (tongue) is soft and dreamily reminiscent of only the most ethereal bits of beef. The fish is fine and flaky and the cabeza and pork are

herculean in flavor options worthy of note, too. Tacos are small and served on two tiny tortillas (flour or corn, your call) with a bit of house salsa that has all the kick of a pissed off Girl Scout who’s just tall enough to nail you right under the kneecap. Or, feel free to customize, too, courtesy of the fully loaded salsa bar. Be sure to pick up a glass of the homemade horchata, which is sweet and milky with seductive whispers of cinnamon. Burgess Brothers’ Burgers This burger joint’s motto is “Committed to Service,” and that’s evidenced in its outstanding customer service. The food is also exceptional. There are plenty of burgers on the menu— all smoked before they’re grilled.

The one-third pound Tactical Blue Burger is served with blue cheese, tomato, lettuce and fried onions. With a generous slathering of the “Patrol” sauce, it’s full of flavor but not too smoky.

Don’t miss the barbecue, though.

The pulled-pork sandwich is nicely smoked and shredded, piled on a garlic roll. There are also kid-sized sliders and the Code 4 vegetarian burger, made with a portobello mushroom.

Buffalo Pizza & Ice Cream Co. The eatery, which offers take-out only, keeps the menu simple.

Customers can choose from two types of pies: breakfast or lunch. Breakfast pizzas consist of standard pizza dough, on top of which rests a thin layer of egg, cheese and toppings (read: no sauce). One pepperoniand-jalapeños morning pie starts off well, but then the dough disappoints. It doesn’t quite fit in either the “thick” or “thin” category; it’s not yeasty enough and too chewy and firm. A mushroom-and-spinach pie offers better texture. Lunch pizzas here are less unique, but still hit a nice mark via a few standout ingredients. The garlic pizza reaches a nice balance of sweet and salty with a creamy white sauce, mushrooms, onions, pepperoni and sausage.

charred buns are sturdy enough to hold up when the tower is squeezed to a more realistic height. A meaty veggie burger (one of three veggie sandwich options) gets crunch from fried pickles and sweet heat from barbecue sauce. Rosemont Korea House Restaurant This authentic Korean barbeque is a fine place to start if you’re looking to get schooled on Korea’s culture and cuisine.

Recommendations include haemul pajeon, a seafood pancake that’s listed as an appetizer, but is the size of a medium pizza.

It’s chewy on the inside, crispy on the outside, bulging with calamari and shrimp and served with a seasoned soy sauce. The main attraction, however, happens at the tableside grill. Try the beef galbi—simply, thinly sliced beef, served with coarsely cut pieces of raw garlic and slices of jalapeño. Served on a shimmering hot metal plate and fragrant with the aroma of beef and garlic caramelizing, it will take you to a place of meat heaven. Korean. 9729 Folsom Blvd., (916) 362-5013. The Hideaway Bar & Grill This bar fills a niche Sacramento might not have known it lacked with its vague rockabilly vibe, lots of greased hair on the men, brightly dyed hair in retro styles and cat-eye glasses on the ladies, and an abundance of black clothes and tattoo sleeves for all. The liquor selection is basic (no craft cocktails here).

The menu’s heavy on fried appetizers, salads, sandwiches and burgers, the latter of which are architectural, towering assemblages. Happily, the fluffy

#Foodporn If you already use Instagram, but only to browse photos using the hashtag “foodporn,” here’s a relatively new social-networking app for you: SnapDish. The Japanese-made app—which is a free download at the Google Play store or Apple’s App Store—debuted in 2011, but is just now becoming increasingly popular around the world. It’s full of food photos and can integrate with other social networks and micro-blogging sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. Like Instagram, users can follow friends to keep up with their pictures. But where it surpasses other food apps (I’m thinking of you, Yelp) is its feature that allows users to search for recipes, track calories and edit photos. One drawback might be that because it’s so popular in other countries, many of the comments are in foreign languages. Puff pieces thE marijuana chronicLES Less edgy than its speed- and heroin-focused predecessors, this latest offering in Akashic Books’ Drug Chronicles series lights up with 17 stories, poems and graphics featuring the drug in its various incarnations.

One of the funniest stories in The Marijuana Chronicles (Akashic Books, $24.95) is Maggie Estep’s BOOK hallucinatory “Zombie Hookers of Hudson,” featuring Zoey and her one-eared pit bull named Alexander Vinokourov, plus some very demanding 1920s-era weed-smoking zombie hookers. On the quieter side, there’s silver-haired, soft-spoken Agnes from Joyce Carol Oates’ story “High,” whose growing quest for pot leads her toward danger.

Artists’ statement Exhibit S grand opEning Exhibit S, a new artists’ studio, will have its official coming-out party on Thursday, June 27, with a show featuring several notable Sacramento-based artists, including Maren Conrad.

Conrad’s Politically Vulnerable painting series recently caused a stir after lobbyist ART Donne Brownsey successfully pressured local restaurateur Randy Paragary to have Conrad’s pieces removed from the walls of the new Vanguard bar on L Street because she found its theme offensive.

The provocative 12-piece collection, rendered in metal leaf, paint and resin, depicts the wives, girlfriends and lovers of various California governors, including well-known figures such as Linda Ronstadt, Maria Shriver and Nancy Reagan (pictured). Glenda Corcoran, a local attorney, purchased the entire collection, which will now be on display at Exhibit S, along with an enlarged copy of an email that Brownsey wrote to the artist.

The show will also feature works from Danny Scheible, who will display his epic TapeCity sculpture installation, and there will be a preview of a new Tapigami collection set to be unveiled in the near future.

In addition, works from Exhibit S resident artists including Matt Brown and Teddy L Believest will be on display, the latter of whom will screen videos and, armed with a camera, will document the night.

A CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN’S GUIDE TO A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE © 1959

The Wizard of Oz The 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, with its familiar storyline, characters and songs, is one of those rare cultural touchstones that instantly bring you back to by Patti Roberts childhood, no matter what your age is now or when you first experienced the Judy Garland classic. The first generation saw the Technicolor film in theaters, subsequent generations gathered around for the once-a-year traditional television airing and now, everyone has ready access to viewing the movie whenever the mood strikes.

The California Musical Theatre’s Music Circus opens its summer season with this classic that mimics the movie version and delivers the enchantment we came to experience and expect,

with wide eyes all around—from seniors down to the spellbound kids. When the first strains of “Over the Rainbow,” “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” and “We’re Off to See the Wizard” were heard and the audience of all ages first set eyes on Dorothy and Toto, there was a visceral reaction that swooped through Sacramento’s Wells Fargo Pavilion—it seemed as though every person there had found that magical place in his or her heart where the wonders of The Wizard stay safe and warm.

The show begins with everything bathed in sepia tones, and just like the movie, once the tornado blows through and we land in Oz, vivid colors abound. The cast is enthusiastic, and the standouts deliver, most notably Emily Walton as Dorothy, Jamie Torcellini as the Cowardly Lion, Jacquelyn Piro Donovan as the Wicked Witch, a cast of talented local kids as the Munchkins, and the irresistible Toto, too. The sets are beautifully rendered, the live orchestra is stellar (if you take along a child, walk them down to the orchestra pit beforehand so they can see the musicians tuning up), the special effects are clever (a flying monkey!), and the cast is enthusiastic.

A few aspects were left wanting—the whirling modern dancers don’t really capture the tornado, the sound system had a couple glitches and the mechanical Oz isn’t very magical.

The kids are unplugged

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Childhood in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is all fun and games, until someone gets killed, and even then, it’s not particularly graphic.

Laura Eason’s adaptation of Mark Twain’s classic novel is an extremely nostalgic look at pre-electronics boyhood in the figure of Tom Sawyer (Colin Choate), a kid who’s all hijinks and hot air. Fortunately, he’s also got the charisma that will no doubt lead him to a successful career in politics.

Main Street Theatre Works produces it with rapid-fire action: Tom and his buddy Huck (Matthew Taul) witness the murder of the town doctor by Injun Joe (Ernesto Bustos), kicking off an eventful summer in which Tom romances Becky Thatcher (Carissa Meagher), torments his poor Aunt Polly (Erin Renfree), has adventures with his pals (Jonathan Tierney, Max Crisp and Emmanuel Jiminez) and eventually discovers treasure.

Add in a disrupted funeral, a disrupted trial and a scary cave sequence for an average American boyhood, with nary an afternoon lost to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

Choate is talented enough to carry the show, with plenty of help from the supporting cast. All the players—with the exception of Choate and Meagher—perform multiple roles well. Directed by Susan McCandless, the show never lags or gets “talky,” making it excellent for a younger audience.

Tom Sawyer is further enhanced by the natural beauty of the venue, a well-maintained amphitheater sheltered from the wind and equipped with all the modern amenities— including a concession stand with ice cream to enjoy during intermission. Nostalgia may be unrealistic, but there’s a lot to recommend it for a summer evening’s entertainment. Pack up the kids, and leave the Game Boys at home.

THE BIG BANG

B Street Theatre brings back its most successful play ever for a limited-run engagement. The original director (John Lamb) and cast from the 2005 production— Jason Kuykendall, Greg Alexander and Chris Schlagel—return for this romp through history in comedy and song. It’s ridiculous, campy and hilarious, although some of the clever “contemporary” references may have lost relevance—Judge Lance Ito, anybody?

The cast is uninhibited, and the play a bit bawdy at times (bananas and cacti stand out) in a play that is outrageous and funny, maybe even outrageously funny. F, Sa, select Th 7pm; Su 1pm. Through 7/7. $30-$35.

BOURBON AT THE BORDER

In this adaptation of Pearl Cleage’s 1990s-era drama, memories of the civil rights movement of the 1960s are still fresh for May (Brooklynn Solomon) and Charlie (Andre Ramey). Through friendship and camaraderie, they and their friends must come to terms with some awful truths, including decisions that hearken back to a past filled with horror. Cameron Johnson takes the cake as wily friend Tyrone. His timing is pitch-perfect, and he works seamlessly with the language and tone of the play.

Green Valley Theatre Company is the first theater group outside of New York City’s Broadway to stage this 2009 English hit—an odd play about the struggling economic woes of British youth, based in a trailer park that’s overseen by a drugged-out aging party dude. Though the lead character is written over-the-top, this production needs a bit more subterranean subtlety to flesh him out. F, Sa 8pm; Su 7pm.

WHY TORTURE IS WRONG, AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM

Penny Kline of Ovation Stage continues her love affair with the plays of Christopher Durang with this 2009 dark satire on America’s culture of gun violence, racism and paranoia. It is laugh-out-loud funny and suck-in-your-breath scary, sometimes both at the same time. This would be perfect theater of the absurd if the absurdities weren’t so damn real. Kline directs with a keen sense of the urgency of Durang’s message: Not only is torture wrong (it goes against our better natures), but it often doesn’t work. Words heard out of context and used to take hasty actions out of misguided “patriotism” serve no good. But this is a comedy, and everything and everybody, including Hooters, Guantánamo, Terri Schiavo and Tom Stoppard are not safe. F, Sa 8pm; Su 2pm; Through 7/7. $15-$18. White House Down Like Olympus Has Fallen, released three months ago, director Roland Emmerich’s White House Down is laced with images echoing September 11, by Jim Lane 2001. What else are we to think when flames erupt from the columns of the United States’ Capitol dome, and the dome collapses in an almost leisurely fashion, like a stately matron sinking onto a couch after one too many dances?

It evokes both the memory of seeing the twin towers falling into clouds of pulverized concrete and the thought of what even greater tragedy was spared when United Airlines Flight 93 went

down in Pennsylvania. But unlike Olympus, White House Down serves up its scenes not as a shortcut to trauma, but as an invitation to a larky good time.

For those old enough to remember, the picture also evokes memories of 1964’s Seven Days in May. That’s because this seizure of the White House is no terrorist action —in White House Down’s universe, terrorist threats exist only in the minds of hyperventilating Republicans and rabble-rousing Fox News reporters. No, this is an inside job.

The insider is the head of the White House Secret Service detail, Agent Martin Walker (James Woods), in charge of security for President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Like President Jordan Lyman of Seven Days in May, Sawyer is making a controversial career move.

In Seven Days it was a nuclear-disarmament treaty with the Soviet Union; here, it’s a treaty for permanent peace in the Middle East. Both, in their time, have been seemingly pie-in-the-sky items on the classic liberal wish list, and both serve as the impetus to get the plots of their respective movies rolling.

Walker’s motive for betraying his country keeps shifting as Emmerich and writer James Vanderbilt go along. At first, it’s a simple $400 million shakedown to assuage Walker’s grief over a son killed in Afghanistan. But other

members of the assault force drop dark hints about the real objective of their “mission.”

Shame on you if you can’t figure out who and what is behind it all. Just remember: There’s no axis of evil here, only a gang of homegrown Timothy McVeighs, and the louder people proclaim their patriotism, the less you can trust them. Oh, and keep your eyes on the sidelines.

The wild card in the game played by Walker, and his co-conspirator is Capitol policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum), who normally works security for House speaker Eli Raphelson (Richard Jenkins). Today, however, he’s at the White House to interview for a Secret Service job, which he quickly blows because Agent Carol Finnerty (Maggie Gyllenhaal), who interviews him, remembers him from college as a screwup.

Finnerty is agent Walker’s assistant, but she’s not in on his plot, and she becomes Cale’s key contact on the outside when the blood hits the fan.

Cale is also there with his daughter Emily (Joey King), who despises him; he hopes to ingratiate himself with a tour.

But Emily’s not buying; she keeps her sullen nose stuck to her iPhone and calls her father by his first name.

When the assault comes, Cale is in the right place at the right time to save the president from being taken hostage, and White House Down morphs into a superviolent buddy movie with Tatum playing straight man to the bantering Foxx, while Vanderbilt and Emmerich find other rich veins

There’s a story that in 2006, when Paul Greengrass’ United 93 (a better movie than Emmerich could make on his best day) first previewed in New York, patrons shouted “Too soon! Too soon!” Emmerich is guessing it’s been long enough now to turn that day into a rollicking action comedy. Well, therapeutically speaking, maybe he’s right. Still, I’m not looking forward to 2025 and seeing what he does with the Newtown shootings or Boston Marathon bombings. Ω

Before Midnight

Director Richard Linklater returns to the story he began with 1995’s Before Sunrise and continued in 2004’s Before Sunset.

Another nine years, and Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) have 7-year-old twin daughters. In the first movie, the two walked around Vienna talking; in the second, Paris; now, Crete, Greece. As before, their conversation is uneventful but fascinating; they’re both intelligent and interesting, and we hang on every word, even as nothing really “happens.”

(Well, not nothing, exactly: A crisis brews, but somehow, we sense it’ll pass.) It’s amazing to think Linklater, Hawke and Delpy (who all cowrote the script) have sustained this talk-fest for three whole movies, but it’s true, and the pleasure of their company is as keen as ever.

We can hardly wait nine years to see them again. J.L

The Bling Ring

Writer-director Sofia Coppola gets into the caper game, aloofly, with this true tale of the rich-club kids who in 2009 stole millions in flashy loot from Tinseltown celebrities.

No doubt many a term paper soon will expound on the vapid American post-downturn fame fetishes described by this and Spring Breakers, and maybe there really is more to learn about the obvious link between grasping consumerism and adrift adolescence, but is The Bling Ring glib or credulous? Satire or tragedy?

Coppola seems indecisive about which of the robbers she wants to single out and, generally, reluctant to editorialize—to that end, Emma Watson’s creeping theatricality becomes a liability—so the movie’s dry humor comes across as lazy and empty. By imbuing a familiar flat-affect numbness, its maker merely invites us to infer some ambivalence about her own lifelong kinship with Hollywood culture. Noted.

But she’s drawn better stuff from the same source before. J.K.

A while back, writer-director Joss Whedon took a two-week break from shooting The Avengers to have some friends over and whip up a shoestring black-and-white Shakespeare comedy. The result is a very different kind of summer movie: the lovable lark. By design, this isn’t your average screwball wedding-conspiracy comedy, but rather a sly lyrical goof on gender politics, tipped precipitously close to tragedy. As plied by alumni of his earlier entertainment ventures—particularly Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof as the pridefully reluctant lovers Beatrice and Benedick—it’s prime Whedon stuff. Acker’s the real standout, able to say as much in a glance as in many lines of verse. Whedon supplies some cheeky contemporary touches here and there, but the movie’s salient feature is seeming stripped-down, with a roughness around its edges by which the singular moments are more aptly framed. We can see and hear why Shakespeare’s poetry has lasted these many centuries. J.K.

Presided over from its periphery by Megan Mullally as Patrick’s overprotective, oddball mom and Nick Offerman as Joe’s melancholy-widower dad, this bid for arthouse approval sometimes feels so stiflingly familiar that you might prefer to take your chances in the unspoiled forest instead. The East

An agent for a private security firm (Brit Marling) infiltrates an anarchist cell making guerrilla strikes on corporate malefactors, and she finds her priorities shifting into alignment with theirs. Written by Marling and director Zal Batmanglij, the movie wears its grungy, self-conscious naturalism the way 1960s weekend hippies used to wear their love beads and bell-bottom jeans, as if it were a badge of authenticity. The actors—including Alexander Skarsgård, Ellen Page and Patricia Clarkson, who should know better—speak in mutters, mumbles and whispers of the sort employed more by self-absorbed actors than real people. The total effect is affected, annoying and off-putting. Marling’s current indie vogue is hard to explain; flat and expressionless, she makes Kristen Stewart look like Meryl Streep. J.L.

The Internship

The exact origins of this feature debut from writer Chris Galletta and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts are unclear, but it sure feels like a promising short film stretched to feature length through too many Sundance Film Festival workshops and zealously musicsupervised slo-mo scenes of teen boys at play in nature. At stake is the coming-of-age that occurs when three sweet young dudes—attractive protagonist Joe (Nick Robinson), best friend Patrick (Gabriel Basso), and weirdo hanger-on Biaggio (Moises Arias)—run away from their glibly oppressive suburban Midwestern homes to build a makeshift house in the woods. A peculiar synthesis of Spielbergian sincerity and Wes Andersonian indie quirk ensues, with the likable central trio needing a

Now You See Me

Four small-time illusionists—a card trickster (Jesse Eisenberg), an escape artist (Isla Fisher), a mentalist (Woody Harrelson) and a pickpocket (Dave Franco)—hit the big time in Vegas, somehow robbing banks during their act and dispensing the money to the audience. Meanwhile, an FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo), an Interpol detective (Mélanie Laurent) and a professional debunker (Morgan Freeman) all try to figure out how it’s done, and how to stop the next heist. Directed by Louis Leterrier and written by Ed Solomon, Boaz Yakin and Edward Ricourt, the movie is a bit of a fast shuffle itself. Like many magic acts, it’s a lot of smoke and mirrors, and not always on the square. Still, the tricks are tricky enough to be fun; the plot may be just a series of diversions, but at least the diversions are diverting. J.L.

The Kings of Summer

Superman gets a makeover from writer David S. Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan. This isn’t your father’s Superman—or your great-grandfather’s, for that matter. Nolan and Goyer twist him to fit their Dark Knight template: The planet Krypton is a decrepit, grimy place, and the infant KalEl’s parents (Russell Crowe, Ayelet Zurer) could both use a shower. From ugly Krypton they dispatch their son to even uglier Earth, where he suffers through a miserable, friendless childhood to grow into a sullen, misfit Clark Kent (Henry Cavill, as drab and colorless as the movie around him), who spends more time fighting Earthling bigotry than the Kryptonian General Zod (Michael Shannon). If this dingy, joyless movie is the only way to make Superman work these days, maybe the character really has outlived his time. J.L.

Two salesmen with no skills but the gift of gab (Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson) find themselves out of work when their company goes belly-up, so in desperation, they go for a summer internship at Google, where their coworkers are half their age with twice their IQs. The script by Vaughn and Jared Stern is silly and far-fetched, and the sucking up to Google throughout is just a tad unseemly. Still, the movie has charms in spite of itself; it’s pretty funny and rather sweet. Vaughn and Wilson’s comic rapport is as strong as it ever was, and the supporting cast is a big help: Rose Byrne as Wilson’s romantic interest, Aasif Mandvi as the men’s doubtful supervisor, and Josh Brener, Dylan O’Brien, Tiya Sircar and Tobit Raphael as their geeky teammates. Shawn Levy’s direction is uninspired but unobtrusive. J.L.

Writer-director James DeMonaco’s cockamamie premise tries to lend things an aura of wry social satire, but it’s just gaudy lipstick on an old whore; the movie is nothing more than a standard home-invasion slasher flick, and a lousy one at that. DeMonaco poses and answers an ironic question: Does the Purge really “make America a better place”? But he raises a more pertinent one: Do movies like this? J.L.

World War Z

A former special agent for the United Nations (Brad Pitt) is called back into service to investigate a mysterious pestilence that has infected the entire world, turning hundreds of millions of victims into—wait for it—rabid zombies. Based on the mockumentary novel by Max Brooks (son of Mel and Anne Bancroft) and directed by Marc Forster, the movie’s too-many-cooks roster of writers (Matthew Michael Carnahan, Drew Goddard, Damon Lindelof and J. Michael Straczynski) gives testimony to production problems and frantic reshoots that ballooned the budget from $125 million to $200 million. The end result is a mixed bag; Pitt makes a deft thinkingman’s action hero and Forster stages some effective scenes, but too often—especially in the hasty, anticlimactic ending—the movie stumbles into unintentional comedy. Visiting from the Canadian motherland, Jay Baruchel meets up with his pal and countryman Seth Rogen in Los Angeles, where they try to get past post-Rogen-sellout estrangement through partying at James Franco’s place. It’s not really Baruchel’s scene, but the apocalypse begins just as he’s about to bail. That means holing up with Rogen, Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson and Jonah Hill—and all playing (with) themselves—and for the desperate stoner-raunch survivalism of roughing out a lo-fi sequel to Pineapple Express, dodging violent death and bucking for redemption. As proof of concept for a reality series about crudely dueling Judd Apatow alumni, this might work. As a summer movie?

Well, fine, whatever. A lark for Rogen and his co-writer and co-director Evan Goldberg, it is at least on preposterousness par with celebrity-stuffed disaster-movie precedents.

And it does make the most both of Baruchel’s natural appeal and of a solicitously slumming Emma Watson cameo. The joke of Hollywood self-indulgence as the last straw for a vengeful God is not entirely unfunny. J.K.

that Slaughter’s recent investments involve refashioning archaic genres and the seemingly antiquated band-tribute night into something that even cynical hipsters can appreciate.

Indeed, amusing as it is, one of the somewhat retiree’s few remaining residencies is Wunderbar, the LowBrau gig, which takes place every Sunday afternoon with Slaughter breaking out the smooth disco, Tropicália and yacht rock.

Often polarizing, young listeners typically regard the latter genre—which encompasses ’70s and ’80s-era soft rock—as either a guilty pleasure or an even guiltier victim of ironic approval.

But Slaughter is very serious about yacht rock. Perhaps you’ve seen his homemade Michael McDonald snapback?

“I legitimately like Michael McDonald,” he said. “There’s no irony to my obsession. ... Some of [the music] is kitschy, but there’s an awesome transition from Steely Dan to soulful disco.”

at the recently shuttered TownHouse Lounge, rose to weekend fame, until the weekly dance night’s dissolution approximately two years ago.

Since his first pre-Lipstick gigs at The Press Club in the ’90s, there’s hardly been a genre or era Slaughter hasn’t dedicated a night to, with varying degrees of success. But juggling residencies and serving as a figurehead in the music scene is a young man’s game. These days, Slaughter, 34, is humbly adapting, taking the behind-the-curtain role of curator and promoter (as opposed to in-the-booth party instigator) with a weekly gig at LowBrau, an upcoming tribute night to one of his favorite bands and a hand in one of Midtown’s newest ventures.

“Not to be an asshole, but I was always in the center of a certain scenes for a while,” he said.

“I don’t want to do a lot of residencies anymore.

I don’t want to be the guy gripping on.”

Now, he says, he’s narrowing his efforts strictly toward parties he’ll enjoy. While it doesn’t seem intentional, there’s no mistaking

Similarly, while tribute-night nostalgia can also be considered a risky endeavor, Slaughter didn’t shy from greeting the May release of Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories album with one. The Daft Punk tribute could have easily just been a lazy loop of the band’s four studio albums played in succession, but Slaughter livened up the experience with original samples and remixes.

On June 27, he’s following it up with an I Heart LCD Soundsystem tribute, staged purely out of admiration for James Murphy’s nowdefunct New York dance punk group.

“I’ve been obsessed with that band forever,” he said. “I don’t think they’ve made a bad album, and they’ve grown with each, but that first album is just nostalgic for me.”

His biggest venture of late, however, is as an active partner in This Midtown, a free concert series featuring nationally renowned bands outside the MARRS building on 20th Street, scheduled to take place every Second Saturday during the summer months.

This Midtown debuted in May, but it already feels like the shot in the arm Second Saturday needed. Though it took that first concert for Slaughter to warm up to the name.

“I didn’t like the name very much. How the fuck do you Google ‘This,’” he said. But Slaughter soon embraced the concept. “It worked out, because [at the concert], people kept saying, ‘This is awesome,’... and it’s like, This is awesome. Ω

Hey, mom’s gotta rock, too Make it a no-whip, extra-foam jam, please: When Zavalaz took the stage at Ace of Spades on June 22, all most people knew was that the group’s frontman, Cedric BixlerZavala of the Mars Volta and At the Drive-In fame, is a bona fide posthardcore, prog-rock god. Since only a 30-second clip of one Zavalaz song has been released so far, however, the crowd was in for a surprise when the band took the stage and broke into a set of smooth, organ-backed classic rock.

More than once this fan has crowd surfed during a frenetic Mars Volta set, but this was not music for such behavior. The question of how to define the new sound begged another: “Why am I even here?

Because I love what this guy did, or because I love what this guy does?”

This uncertain mood remained as Zavala explained how a particular song was for his twins or another was for his wife—ultimately, it seemed, the whole set comprised a collection of songs he’d been writing in his bedroom for years.

For what it is, it’s not bad, but at times during the show, it just seemed awkwardly personal.

“We’re just finishing up an album,” Zavala explained to the crowd. “It’s something your mom is finally going to love. She’s going to be at a coffee shop waiting in line to order a latte, and it’s going to come on,” he said, affecting the tone of a naive mother: “‘Oh my gawd! I love this! What is this?’”

The whole idea is sort of sad, that this once manic rocker now mellowed by family life had switched to tunes that will, in all likelihood, be available for purchase at Starbucks’ registers nationwide.

Still, can you fault him? People grow, people change and iconic musicians are people, too.

And now that I’m older, would I have crowd surfed, anyway?

At the end of the night after a set of perfectly radio-ready songs, Zavala thanked the audience for being patient and understanding, and I guess I understood—moms need music, and the kids have gotta eat.

Best of luck, Zavalaz. You make that latte bittersweet.

Here, Paper Pistols is now let loose as an ambitious electronica duo.

Long the solo pet project of drummer Ira Skinner (the busiest soundman in Sacramento), Paper Pistols has finally found the voice it lacked in singer Juliana Lydell. Sacramento may still not be ready for experimental projects that involve live drumming to a digitized nebula (despite birthing Death Grips), but this city loves a band with a heroine in the mix, as conveyed by its affection for Sister Crayon’s Terra Lopez and Dusty Brown’s Jessica Brown.

Now, Lydell belongs among the trip-hop/electronica sisterhood.

I believe an idealistic alt-reality exists in which these bands set out on a sold-out, round-robin tour, and Sacramento dethrones Austin, Texas, and Brooklyn, New York, as music meccas—all that’s missing is the technology to cross astral planes. Maybe it was Assembly’s stellar sound and visual equipment, but tracks such as the Ellie Goulding-esque “Hipbones” and the folktronica of “Industry” made it feel like the music on Deliver Us From Chemicals is deserving of a life far greater than local notoriety.

Just Zuhg it: The new Sacramento Kings arena that will eventually make its home on K Street has already taken its first casualty: The Zuhg Life Store (545 Downtown Plaza) will sell its last records this weekend. There will surely be more Sacramento-favorite mom-and-pop businesses given the boot for the sake of gentrification (I shudder to imagine a downtown without the Pre-Flite Lounge), but this particular loss is a hard one for local music fans, tie-die-shirt wearers and art lovers.

“The mall is super slow,” said Zuhg Life Store owner Bryan Nichols. “It’s hard to make enough money to break even.”

Rather than wait around for the rest of the stores in the mall to close, Nichols said he’ll try to relocate.

On June 29, the shop will host a good-ol’ musical send-off at Assembly (1000 K Street), featuring Stable Hands, the Bennys, the Old Screen Door and Adrian Bellue. This goodbye show, which also features live art from Jared Konopitski, will start at 8 p.m., and tickets are $10.

Part of the newest generation of country music (think Jason Aldean, not Taylor Swift), these guys mix it up with a slightly harder COUNTRY rock edge, but they haven’t forgotten the topics of country music: cowboys, drinking and girls.

Local band Groovincible isn’t just going through the motions playing the same-old tired dance tunes. In fact, its name is short for “grooving, interesting, danceable music.”

It mixes a bit of jazz, soul and psychedelic influences all with a smooth edge—like a softer, funkier Morcheeba. The trio started out as members of the Sacramento group Zuhg, but quit to start Groovincible. Singer Bianca Wright has a sultry voice that might be something you’d hear at a smoky jazz club, yet there’s nothing retro about her.

She brings flair to the band’s light-as-afeather grooves. The music is so cool, you don’t necessarily need to SOUL/JAZZ dance to it—it’s good for just kicking back. 1400 Alhambra Boulevard, http://groovincible.com.

Los Angeles rapper Kid Ink (a.k.a. Brian Todd Collins) is one of those camera-ready guys with hella tattoos and hella swagger.

Beneath the visual hype, however, exists a polished wordsmith, beat master and producer. In addition to a handful of mixtapes and an indie record (2012’s Up & Away, which debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard RAP 200 chart), Kid Ink has signed to RCA Records and is currently at work on a new album. He’s already dropped one single, the bombastic “Bad Ass.” All this, and he’s a friend to the animals—in March, he joined People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ “Ink, Not Mink” campaign. Fear, anxiety and inhalation I’ve heard that marijuana can ease anxiety, but I have also heard that it can cause anxiety. Which is true?

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “The prob-

lem with quotes on the Internet is that it’s hard to determine whether or not they are genuine,” so said Joan of Arc back in 1429, right before she helped lead French troops in the battle of Patay. Just kidding! Joan of Arc never had the pleasure of surfing the Web, of course, since it didn’t exist until long after she died. But I was trying to make a point that will be useful for you to keep in mind, Taurus, which is: Be skeptical of both wild claims and mild claims. Stay alert for seemingly interesting leads that are really time-wasting half-truths. Be wary for unreliable gossip that would cause an unnecessary ruckus.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): French

impressionist painter Claude Monet loved to paint water lilies, and he did so over and over again for many years. Eventually, he created about 250 canvases that portrayed these floating flowers. Should we conclude that he repeated himself too much? Should we declare that he was boringly repetitive?

Or might we wonder if he kept finding new delights in his comfortable subject? Would we have enough patience to notice that each of the 250 paintings shows the water lilies in a different kind of light, depending on the weather and the season and the time of day? I vote for the latter view, and suggest that you adopt a similar approach to the familiar things in your life during the coming weeks.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): “In order

to swim one takes off all one’s clothes,” said 19th-century Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. “In order to aspire to the truth one must undress in a far more inward sense, divest oneself of all one’s inward clothes, of thoughts, conceptions, selfishness, etc., before one is sufficiently naked.” Your assignment in the coming week, Cancerian, is to get au naturel like that. It’s time for you to make yourself available for as much of the raw, pure, wild truth as you can stand.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Gertrude Stein

was an innovative writer. Many illustrious artists were her friends. But she had an overly elevated conception of her own worth. “Think of the Bible think of Homer think of Shakespeare and think of me,” she said. On another occasion, she proclaimed, “Einstein was the creative philosophic mind of the century, and I have been the creative literary mind of the century.” Do you know anyone like Stein, Leo? Here’s the truth, in my opinion: To some degree, we are all like Stein. Every one of us has at least one inflated idea about ourselves—a conceited self-conception that doesn’t match reality.

It was my turn to confront my egotistical delusions a few weeks ago. Now would be an excellent time for you to deal with yours.

Don’t be too hard on yourself, though. Just recognize the inflation, laugh about it and move on.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): When I close

my eyes, I get a psychic vision of you as a kid playing outside on a warm summer day.

You’re with friends, immersed in a game that commands your full attention. Suddenly, you hear a jingling tune wafting your way from a distance. It’s the ice-cream truck. You stop what you’re doing and run inside your home to beg your mom for some money. A few minutes later, you’re in a state of bliss, communing with your Fudgsicle or ice-cream cone or strawberry-lime fruit bar. I have a feeling that you will soon experience an adult version of this scene, Virgo. Metaphorically speaking, either the ice-cream man or the ice-cream woman will be coming to your neighborhood.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): During the

past 10 months, you have been unusually adventurous. The last time you summoned so much courage and expansiveness may have been 2001. I’m impressed! Please accept my respect and appreciation. You’ve had a sixth sense about knowing when it’s wise to push beyond your limitations and boundaries. You have also had a seventh sense about intuiting when to be crafty and cautious as you wander through the frontiers. Now here’s one of your assignments for the next 12 months: Distill all you’ve learned out there in the borderlands and decide how you will use your wisdom to build an unshakable power spot back here in the heart of the action.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Michael

Faraday (1791-1867) was one of the most influential scientists in history. He produced major breakthroughs in both chemistry and physics. Have you ever used devices that run on electricity? You can thank him for playing a major role in developing that wonderful convenience. And yet, unlike most scientists, he had only the most elementary grasp of mathematics. In fact, his formal education was negligible. I propose that we name him your role model of the week. He’s a striking example of the fact that you can arrive at your chosen goal by many different paths. Keep that in mind if you’re ever tempted to believe that there’s just one right way to fulfill your dreams.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

“The only thing that we learn from history,” said the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, “is that we never learn anything from history.” I’m urging you to refute that statement in the coming weeks, Sagittarius. I’m pleading with you to search your memory for every possible clue that might help you be brilliant in dealing with your immediate future. What have you done in the past that you shouldn’t do now?

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Ac-

cording to my analysis of the astrological omens, now would be a pretty good time to talk about things that are hard to talk about. I don’t necessarily mean that you’ll find it easy to do. But I suspect it would be relatively free of pain and karmic repercussions. There may even be a touch of pleasure once the catharsis kicks in. So, try it if you dare, Capricorn. Summon the courage to express truths that have previously been hard to pin down. Articulate feelings that have been murky or hidden. For best results, encourage those you trust to do the same.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Are you

familiar with Quidditch? It’s a rough sport played by wizards in the fictional world of Harry Potter. All seven books in the series mention it, so it’s an important element.

Author J.K. Rowling says she dreamed up the sport after having a quarrel with her boyfriend. “In my deepest, darkest soul,” she reports, “I would quite like to see him hit by a bludger.” (In Quidditch, a bludger is a big black ball made of iron.) I bring this up, Aquarius, because I suspect that you, too, are in position to use anger in a creative and constructive way. Take advantage of your raw emotion to make a lasting improvement in your life.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In his erotic

poem “Your Sex,” Joe Bolton exults: “My heart simplified ... I touch the bud / Of happiness—it’s in season. / And whatever grief I might have felt before / Simply dies inside me.” You might want to write that down on a slip of paper and carry it around with you this week, Pisces. According to my understanding of the astrological omens, the bud of happiness is now in season for you. You have good reason to shed the undertones of sadness and fear you carry around with you. Think global, speak local TEDxSacramento founder Brandon Weber doesn’t want to give too much away about this year’s daylong event, scheduled for Friday, June 28, at Sacramento City College (3835 Freeport Boulevard) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Like its counterpoint in the annual TEDGlobal conference, each independently organized TEDx gathering aims to not only draw in the region’s most interesting speakers and panel discussions, but to also incubate diverse perspectives.

The emphasis, Weber says, should be on ideas, not marquee names.

“We want people to go into it with an open mind,” he said. Weber, who also founded The Urban Hive, a co-working space in Midtown, talked to SN&R about TEDxSacramento’s growth since its 2009 launch, and why preparing for a “speak” is a lot like staging a play.

How has TEDxSacramento evolved?

The first one was just 50 people in my office—very small and very low-key. There were no live speakers; we just had food and wine and hung out and chatted. At the time, so few people knew about TED—it was just a gathering of people who were into TED. You either knew about it and loved it or didn’t.

So, essentially, we just gathered a lot of people with a lot of like interests. We were one of the first ones. There was TEDxBerlin and Amsterdam and then Sacramento. Now, it’s [grown into] a community of like-minded individuals. We’ve grown to have more than one event a year with speakers and live streaming of the global TED conference, and we also have salons that are shorter, more informal events.

How is TEDx tied to the local community?

I can’t speak to other cities, but ours is really diverse, so you can just as likely be sitting at one of our events with the CEO of one of the best-known companies on one side of you and a high-school teacher or artist on the other side. That’s what makes it so special—we don’t just want it be a bunch of executives, or for that matter, just artists and teachers.

Favorite past TEDx talk?

Last year, we had a speaker who’d applied through our website. We get hundreds of applications online, most of them are self-promotional, but this gentleman, Chris Ategeka was different. He was from Uganda, and both of his parents had died of AIDS. He’d raised his siblings on his own, and, as a teenager, he met up with some people with [the nonprofit] Y.E.S. Uganda who were from Northern California. They invited him to come to the [United States]. He went to

community college in Berkeley, and later, transferred to UC Berkeley, where he got into the [mechanical-engineering] program.

And he’s still thinking about Uganda, and he goes back and hires 10 engineers to help him design a wheelchair and [three-wheel] ambulance built from the bicycle parts that are often discarded in the landfills there.

He trains them and launches [CA Bikes] and saves [thousands of] lives.

He’s only 23, and when he came to present his talk, his [African] accent was very strong, and he was very uncomfortable, but his story was so beautiful. In the end, he got a standing ovation, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. I loved that he wasn’t already a household name—we don’t usually release our speaker names until a week or two before the event.

Why is that?

Because people don’t go for the speakers, they go for the experiences, for being a part of the discourse.

This year’s speakers include midwife pioneer Ina May Gaskin, America’s Next Top Model winner Naima Mora, and co-founder and CEO of LendUp Sasha Orloff, which helps people build credit.

What’s the thread?

It’s very disparate. That’s part of our goal. It’s similar to TEDx Conferences in [other cities].

The purpose here is to have diversity. This year’s theme is “confluence,” which means confluence of ideas. It’s all very diverse— which seems fitting for Sacramento. We have developed a [more specific] thread, but I can’t speak to it yet. There’s a real back-and-forth that happens with our speaker teams. We work with our speakers to develop the best possible talk for them.

For example, there’s one presenter who initially thought [the talk] would just be about professional stuff, but it’ll probably end up a more personal, intimate talk. The talks are always evolving.

I didn’t realize it worked that way, that the talks are almost like plays worked out before opening night with rehearsals, etc.

Yes—they’re all given run-throughs. By the time you hear a final talk, it’s changed. We tell people you’re giving talk of a lifetime in 10 to 15 minutes.

What do you hope people to get out of TEDx? We want to blow our attendees’ minds. We really want to have them walking out [thinking], “Oh my God, I can’t believe I did that!” … We’re trying to make Sacramento part of the global discussion.
