Not a Rocky trip Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Last week, I mentioned that I was going to the Investigative Reporters & Editors conference in Philadelphia. I promised you a quick update on what I learned.

First, I think it was the best conference I’ve ever attended.

Many of the country’s top reporters and editors share information on strategies and techniques. It’s amazing to chew the fat with people whose work I’ve seen over the years and to have some even know my work.

I focused on three things while I was there: Visualizations, coding and police reporting.

Mainly, I went to the police reporting session just to see what they were saying about FatalEncounters.org, which came up in almost every session.

Visualization these days primarily means maps and Tableau, which is a program that allows people to import very large spreadsheets and manipulate them into easily understood snapshots. Specifically, I was trying to figure out how to update a visual that a volunteer did for the website. While I attended four Tableau sessions, the actual job I was trying to accomplish took less than five minutes. You can see its results here: http://www.fatalencounters.org/visualizations-2/.

On that same page, you’ll see a map on which FatalEncounters data is laid over a map that shows poverty statistics. It’s the answer to a question I’ve wondered about since this project started and proves beyond any doubt that poverty is an enormous indicator—probably the biggest after gender—of who gets killed by police in this country.

But it wasn’t all intellectual pursuits. I stayed in a great hotel called the Independent on Locust Street. I found an awesome little dive bar called Frank’s, where I spent a couple of nights happily drinking with the locals.

I had just a ton of great food in this little area of Philly, although I did manage to eat bad food twice at the Reading Market.

The people were nice, the flights weren’t bumpy, the weather was cool—I’ve never had a better time in Philadelphia.

This trip gained Philly its first positive mark on my unofficial scorecard.

Bridge into troubled history For all those good-hearted folks lamenting that the Virginia Street Bridge is coming down, maybe I can set their minds at rest. Yes, it is a part of Reno history, but it is not an “historic landmark,” it is just an old and crumbling bridge. For those of us who have been around Reno for the past 60-70 years, we have seen traffic, both auto and pedestrian, increase drastically across a narrow, outdated bridge. We have also seen several major floods in the downtown area caused by debris congested at the bridge; floods that have damaged or destroyed downtown buildings and businesses, that have cut off travel from one side of town to the other.

It’s too bad it wasn’t built by the Romans!

It is far past the time to replace the Virginia Street Bridge, and the new one will be beautiful and a much-needed improvement.

Let’s get logical Re “Woman of the people” (Letters to the Editor, June 4): I totally agree with Fred Speckmann that we should keep tax surpluses for rainy days.

But, then he goes on to say, “Lower taxes always results in greater growth and subsequent increase in tax base for an increase in tax revenue.” Let’s take that for a run. We reduce the tax on all small businesses by $1,000 a year. Each of them spends it on something— advertising, fix the roof, computer, new window, vacation, or wine.

Some of the spending will be on taxable items. Maximum tax revenue will be 7.725 percent from spending $1,000 or $77.25, if it is taxable, otherwise $0.00.

So we gave up $1,000 for $77.25 in tax revenue. Is there some kind of math that I don’t know about? So, instead we give each home owner lower taxes by $1,000. How does the owner turn it into more money?

Guns or butter?

The United States spends more on cruise missiles than we do on the National Endowment for the Arts. We spend more on nuclear weapons than on energy conservation programs. We spend more on a lethal, planetwide military presence in general than on domestic food and nutrition assistance. Those are your federal taxes at work 24-7 and, much like a career or an entire industry being outsourced to the “free” market of slave wages, you have no say in the matter. That is the point. Your nation is not in your hands—certainly not the hands holding the wallet where the money for which one collectively broke one’s back used to be. Without a choice or a valid voice, dare we ask how is this then representative democracy without expecting the reply of whistling tumbleweeds en route to Walmart?

Why can’t one elect to which ends one’s taxes are spent instead of this circus crap of electing lobbied corporate stooges to the Congress?

A credible people should choose the priorities of what’s done in their name on their dime. Wouldn’t we like to know our own national character? Are we warmongers? Are we humanitarians? Are we dust in the wind?

GOP killing babies with your vote Re “Chaos theory” (Feature story, June 4): The previous session of the Legislature was revealing. We here in America are preyed upon by an evil much more cruel and dangerous than ISIS. Capitalist greed Re “Better paid workers don’t create jobs” (Let Freedom Ring, June 4): Lately, I have been surprised by the reasonableness of Brenden Trainor’s opinions—until his recent articles regarding blacks and minimum wages. His discussion brought back a memory of writings by Henry Ford. Henry Ford established the $5 day and the 40-hour week. I can assure you that he did not do it out of the goodness of his heart. He did it because he realized that capitalism is a pyramid scheme. The rich basically skim off the lower classes. Wealth moves up, not down like a trickle.

When workers have extra spendable money and time to enjoy the items they purchase, money moves up into the hands of the capitalists. He encouraged and set a standard for the Detroit area for this to happen. The reason the U.S is still the economic superpower—despite what you read about China—is that our population has money to spend and time to enjoy it. People like Trainor would deny that to the common worker in the name of profits for stockholders. It is common workers buying TVs, cars, homes, etc., that makes these stockholders wealthy, not the stockholders spending money on lavish luxury items. A minimum wage would not be necessary if this was recognized universally. Greed has instead caused employers to become concerned only with shortterm profits at the expense of the real producers of wealth, the consumer base of well paid workers.

Fresh water thinking From the looks of the list of appointees to the Governor’s Drought Forum, I’m wondering how serious he is about solutions for the drought.

The same state department heads, who are all good people, will most likely come up with the same old policies and regulations. They have jobs already, and the drought, while important, may not be personal or urgent enough. The Forum has a huge task and should be looking for dreamers, innovators and practitioners to collaborate. What’s really missing are people who have been and will be seriously impacted by any recommended drought measures—local governments, tribes, water organizations such as irrigation districts and small water companies, ranchers, business owners, conservationists, well owners and urban dwellers. All have a stake in what’s recommended. Where are they on the governor’s lists? We need practical solutions that are daring, affordable and sustainable. Mellow yellow Re “Water over the lawn” (Notes from the Neon Babylon, May 7): On National Public Radio, a water expert said that the best way to preserve water is to go out and buy a low-flush toilet. It saves about 15 percent water. Buying a new bowl—maybe several if you have more than one bathroom—and having it installed, does not sound too attractive to me. My solution is this: Let’s say I use the bathroom in my home five times a day. One of them is for big business, and I flush immediately. The other four are not, so I don’t flush more than one time.

Two out of five gives a reduction of 40 percent at no extra cost.

A mixed bag The 78th Session of the Nevada Legislature is behind us.

We learned some lessons this time around. Probably everyone did, and they’re certainly not the lessons we usually learn and forget by the time the next election rolls around.

One of the first things we learned is that there are people on the ground, closer to the action and the strategizing than the press is, and that what is happening behind the public scenes is at least as important as what happens in the halls.

Think that sudden change at the end of the session to the law regarding prevailing wage on school wasn’t planned months in advance to get recalcitrant Democrats in line to pass the governor’s budget?

Many Democrats in the state are as conservative as Republicans, and they all had to be in line to get the two-thirds majority required.

Not to get in the business of predictions, but this session showed like no session before it the danger of candidates making promises to constituents. The only promise that should legitimately be made is, “I will consider all circumstances that arise at the time I vote before I say how I will vote on a particular issue.”

It’s far better to run on integrity than to run on a dogmatic position—like “no new taxes”—because then, changing circumstances that are beyond an individual’s control don’t box a candidate into a no-win position of either giving up dogma or the appearance of giving up his or her integrity. This is quite literally the reason voters place all politicians into one big bucket labeled “liars.”

Well, because of this [gestures at leg brace], not much. I don’t really have any plans. … I was playing football and tore my ACL. I had plenty of plans [before that]. I was chasing my football career down and trying to get stronger.

Now I’m just going to try and enjoy the sunshine, I guess.

Some Assembly Republicans are going to have a tough time running on their integrity as Republicans committed to smaller, more efficient government.

Nevertheless, as Nevadans, we have to appreciate their service to the state. They’ve certainly made their own lives harder in the future, particularly if they had hopes for advancement in the political realm.

Again, a mixed bag: Weep in one hand and put our gratitude in the other and see which one fills quicker.

On the other hand, the Republicans who voted with their dogma by and large relegated themselves to the second team, unable to negotiate for the best possible outcome for their constituents because their line in the sand was drawn too far to the right—and too far in advance. While their efforts to undermine the entire governing process may have been admirable from an “integrity” standpoint—and we say that without irony—their dogma forced them into positions where they were only representing themselves, unable to compromise, and creating a committed opposition with their histrionics.

We’re mainly talking about Michele Fiore’s behavior in favor of guns on campus, but Ira Hansen often exhibited a similar self-deprecation, with, for example, his last-minute pouting press conference in which he complained about how the Republican assemblymembers who weren’t expected to vote his way were unavailable for bullying.

We’re already gearing up for the presidential election.

It’ll be interesting to see how this dogma-versus-integrity quandary plays out on a national level this year. Ω

The 2015 Nevada Legislature was a mixed bag Every time I watched a floor session during the 2015 Nevada Legislature, I’d think if Bernie Anderson were still alive, his head would explode. If he had watched the last 10 minutes before final adjournment, I think his heart would have broken on behalf of his beloved institution as chaos by and confusion reigned.

Sheila Leslie The former assemblymember was the unofficial Assembly historian, someone who cared almost as much about the legislative process as the outcomes. He often tutored new legislators in Mason’s Manual of Legislative Procedure, the legislative parliamentary arbiter, and urged them to become familiar with the rules. He cautioned new legislators to think twice before requesting to speak on the floor, and carefully consider every motion and desired outcome before pushing the “speak” button at their desks.

To utter a word on the floor without being recognized by the speaker was unthinkable in Bernie’s world.

or accepting a conference committee report would cause him to frown and shake his head. Bernie would have been apoplectic witnessing a legislator interrupting a colleague on the floor using crude language, such as, “Sit your ass down.” He might have stalked off in protest except he had too much respect for the institution to degrade it in any way.

But it wasn’t just the embarrassment on the Assembly floor or the suppression of minority views in the Senate that made me recall Bernie all session long. He would have been delighted about the hyper focus on improving K-12 education this year and very emotional during the last few days as it became clear a corporate tax would be enacted to finally fund vital programs. He would have loved the concept of Victory Schools and been excited about supporting teachers through scholarships, bonuses, and the simple act of reimbursement for classroom supplies.

Bernie would have been appalled, however, at the fact that

Nevada now has the broadest and “best” school voucher program in the nation. While Republicans were busily celebrating the new law for allowing every parent to send their children to a religious or private school of their choosing at taxpayer expense, Bernie would have understood the $5,000 in per pupil funding would essentially be a subsidy for wealthy families, as working families still could not afford the tuition. Private schools also choose their students, relegating the harder-to-serve students with more expensive needs to the public educational system.

As the tax discussions intensified, I also thought of Assemblymember Peggy Pierce who died in 2013 and how she would have been delighted to see Nevada finally join 47 other states in taxing large corporations, a cause she long advocated to much eye rolling and condescension from the business sector. She might have preferred a more straightforward profits tax, but she would have well

understood that any sort of gross receipts tax on large corporations is a huge win for Nevada. And it would have been entertaining to see her reaction to the ridiculous attempt by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce to extort funding for their pet projects as a condition of their support.

I also know the late Assemblymember Jan Evans would have been very happy about the defeat of an effort to weaken Nevada’s abortion laws by requiring parents to be informed when a teenager sought an abortion and subject her to a 48-hour waiting period before the procedure.

And Colonel Chuck Fulkerson, former director of the state Veteran’s Office who passed away last October, would have been beside himself as his dream of a veterans home in Northern Nevada became reality.

The memory of these revered Nevadans should inspire us to continue to work for change that sometimes takes far too long. Ω

The 2015 Nevada Legislature was a mixed bag I give the 2015 Nevada Legislature a very mixed review.

I give an A+ for passing not one, but two school choice bills.

Nevada has gone from being one of the worst states for school choice to one of the best. The combination of opportunity scholarships combined by Brendan Trainor with Educational Savings Accounts (ESA) that can be used by parents for a variety of non-public school expenses is the kind of structural change that I hoped would come out of this Republican one-party rule.

Parents now can send their children to private schools without hurting the school districts since the funding comes from the Distributive School Account, leaving intact other funding for per pupil expenditures. A quality alternative education is now within reach for Nevada’s poorest children.

However, the Nevada Legislature gets an F for buckling under to Gov. Brian Sandoval’s huge tax increase.

This will tarnish the Republican brand in Nevada for years. A modest tax increase tied to inflation and

population growth would have been acceptable. The governor’s tax increase is embarrassing to conservatives and libertarians who elected Republicans promising to lower taxes and cut government. Now liberals are happily tweeting that Gov. Sandoval is their “Democratic governor.” Ray Hagar quipped the Democrats should work hard to keep Republicans in power so they can get their agenda passed. Sandoval simply rolled over to the unions and big business, saddling Nevada with a completely unnecessary tax increase and bloated budget.

Watching the testimony on May 30 in front of the Assembly Committee of the Whole, it became obvious who benefits from this tax increase, and it sure ain’t Nevada’s children. Testifying against the bill were blue collar industries like trucking and scrap metal, concerned that the gross receipts tax would hit hardest in years with minimal profits or even losses. Testifying for the bill were the usual dominant players

in Nevada, the gaming, financial, mining and telecommunications industries who will benefit from playing ball with the governor while saddling new competitors with higher taxes. These lobbyists insisted that they were willing to sacrifice for the children because it’s really not about money, it’s about quality of life. When you have been around for a while, you know when someone says it’s not about the money, it’s about the money.

The new commerce tax will act like a European-style value added tax, pyramiding tax upon tax as each stage of production will be hit.

Proponents claim the tax will not affect 90 percent of businesses in the state but when pressed admit the tax is designed for expansion. The closest thing to immortality on Earth is a new government tax.

There will be constitutional challenges because the tax violates the Nevada Constitution’s mandate that taxes be uniform. There are 27 different rates for different

industries, which will be a full employment program for corporate lobbyists. As these impeccably dressed courtiers infest Carson City, those who look a tad scruffier will pay more for cigarettes, retail goods, rents, and utilities while seeing their taxes fund more administrators, boondoggles and flat outcomes.

We have heard the same siren song every time taxes have been raised for education—this time it will be different. Well, it won’t.

Sandoval is whistling past the graveyard wherein lie the bones of governors Bryan, Miller and Guinn, whose enormous education spending increases got us to today, where everyone blithely admits the public schools suck. If Republicans really wanted to run government as a business, they would have cut educational spending as wasteful and unproductive. Instead, they opened our wallets without any expectation of better results. For shame! Ω

Iraq war bill still rises The Iraq war keeps costing. On Monday, June 8, just after 10 in the morning, the (financial) cost to the nation of the war hit $818,500,889,274, according to the National Priorities Project.

That figure rises by approximately $115,516 an hour.

The cost Nevadans have paid for the war by that hour was $6,667,056,499.

The residents of Nevada’s second U.S. House district have paid $1,745,752,092 Residents of Washoe County have paid $1,287,210,158.

Residents of Reno have paid $573,370,219.

Residents of Sparks have paid $131,521,926.

This is our eighth report on these figures over the past eight years. When we first started watching these counts in 2007 (“The other war toll,” Sept. 27, 2007), these were the figures: United States $279,759,077; Nevada $2,506,718; Reno $205,839.

Studies funding revealed The Beacon Hill Institute recently produced 16 studies of power plant operations in 16 states, including Nevada. The reports claim that proposed Environmental Protection Agency rules for the plants “would lead to rolling blackouts, send electricity prices skyrocketing, and devastate local economies, are being published in 16 states by a network of pro-corporate and ultra-conservative think tanks.”

The London Guardian has now reported that the reports are “funded … by an ultra-conservative think tank, the Beacon Hill Institute [which] is associated with a network of ultra-conservative groups working with the American Legislative Exchange Council and funded by patrons of anti-government causes such as the Koch brothers and Searle Freedom Trust.”

Reporter Suzanne Goldenberg wrote that the studies are released through local right wing front groups. She also reports, “In 2013, Suffolk University publicly repudiated Beacon Hill after the Guardian reported the organization told prospective funders its studies could undermine a regional climate change initiative.”

Las Vegas came first An online petition seeking a Chick-fil-A restaurant in Reno has attracted 34 signatures.

The petition is undated but a notation says it was posted two years ago, suggesting it was not posted in connection with the 2012 controversy when Chick-fil-A president and chief operating officer Dan Cathy told a radio host, “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.’ I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.”

Comments posted with the 34 signatures made little reference to the controversy. Just two mentioned it: “We love Chickfil-A—not just their food but all they stand for!” “We need more businesses that know how to serve people and the Creator of the Universe!!”

Cathy later called his comments a mistake and reached out to an LGBT group, Campus Pride, to mend relations with the gay community. Cathy said he should not have inserted the corporation into the issue. “I think that’s a political debate that’s going to rage on, and the wiser thing for us to do is to stay focused on customer service,” he told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Warming warnings Sierra as local water source is threatened “This relates to Tahoe,” said a small, professorial man at the front of a hall at the Tahoe Environmental by Research Center in Incline Village.

So rapidly, in fact, that he said it was a threat to those who are “so dependent on Tahoe for a water supply.”

That would include Reno, Sparks, Pyramid Lake, and farmers in Lyon and Churchill County.

The speaker was Charles Goldman, the scientist who has studied Lake Tahoe longer than any other, recipient of the Albert Einstein World Prize in Science, and co-author of Limnology, a volume on the study of inland waters.

Goldman is the kind of expert people who don’t get their science from Ted Nugent or the local weathercaster listen to about climate change. And he is alarmed. It’s not just downstream water impact he worries about. It’s the impact of climate change on the entire Sierra.

It’s not that Westerners weren’t warned. Eleven years ago, five scientists wrote a paper that included language like this: “The projected changes include much-discussed warming trends as well as important changes in precipitation, extreme weather, and other climatic conditions, all of which may be expected to affect Sierra Nevada rivers, watersheds, landscapes, and ecosystems. ... it appears likely that climate change would affect hazards and ecosystems significantly and throughout the range. The riverine, ecological, fire, and geomorphic consequences are far from understood but are likely to be of considerable management concern.”

In 2011, the Endangered Species coalition called the Sierra one of the top 10 ecosystems needing protection.

There have been innumerable cautions about the vulnerability of birds in the Sierra Nevada.

A group of oceanographers wrote, “Floods from winter storms on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada have been projected to increase in intensity in winter by all climate models that have been analyzed thus far, including models that otherwise project drier conditions.”

California’s Central Valley—the breadbasket of the West, supplier of 30 percent of the nation’s food, and

one of the world’s most important farm regions—is now producing 20 percent of its normal harvests.

The Union of Concerned Scientists tried appeals to self interest: “That decline [in snowpack] is likely to affect both the timing and availability of water for drinking, agriculture, and recreation. ... warmer temperatures typically increase evaporation rates and demand for water for crops. ... In this scenario, ski resorts might never have enough snow to operate without snowmaking machines, and could be forced to relocate. If we make significant efforts to reduce our emissions, the ski season at lower and middle elevations could shorten by a month.”

But such warnings are no match for denial activities massively funded by right-wing or corporate organizations like Donors Trust, the Howard Charitable Foundation, the Searle Freedom Trust, the John Williams Pope Foundation, and the Sarah Scaife Foundation. In 2013, a Drexel University study found that funding to denialists from Exxon Mobil and the Kochs had mostly ended while money coming from the foundations grew.

Complicating all of this is the current drought, and enduring misconceptions in the public mind.

Sierra: high and dry Many people believe that even if corporate and government policies can be changed, Earth will begin healing itself. But nature doesn’t necessarily work that way.

“This is why Lake Erie didn’t improve at all for years after they stopped putting fertilizer in the lake,” Goldman said.

Scientists have warned repeatedly that some climate change effects are not reversible. “Have We Passed the Point of No Return on Climate Change?” is a headline that appeared last month in Scientific American.

In terms of the Sierra, Chelsea Arnold of the School of Natural Sciences at the University of California Merced said in 2014, “What we’re seeing is that all kinds of extreme weather, including one dry winter like the one we just had, can totally change the structure of the soil. Part of that is an irreversible change. ... It’s like with a raisin. You can add water, but all you’re going to get is a soggy raisin.”

prepare for the next ones quickly.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has projected “droughts in the U.S. Southwest and Central Plains during the last half of this century could be drier and longer than drought conditions seen in those regions in the last 1,000 years.”

To Goldman, one of the first necessities is for trust in science to be restored. That may not be easy, given the kind of money that is being spent to make science the enemy. It would also require greater sophistication on the part of the public, to stop listening to figures who cherry-pick the science, cite only evidence that supports a pre-selected conclusion, and project short-term information into longterm conclusions.

“Short term data is very, very poor to use in ecological predictions,” Goldman said. Ω

growth has gotten back to normal— above 30 percent, highest in the region—while the snowpack is at 3 percent. And there is no way to tell when the drought will end. One Western drought ran from 1928 to 1939. One particularly bad drought was only a year long—1976-1977— but it did enormous damage. Tree ring studies have similar or longer droughts before the arrival of whites.

During the 1930s, drought-marked tree stumps emerged from Lake Tahoe, sparking research by Samuel Harding and later scientists suggesting that a prolonged drought allowed the forest to grow lower in the basin for decades or more.

A late-1980s, early-1990s drought was six years long. Hydroelectric power generation was compromised, trees died, farmland fell fallow, the Truckee became a trickle (one rain in the very dry Sierra washed dirt downstream, turning the Truckee to a coffee-with-cream color for days, clogging the water treatment plant), and in some cases groundwater was used beyond its recharge rate. It was also a time of widespread wildfires.

Farmer No Nevada farmers face new regulations as state organics program closes Our state’s floundering organic certification program was expected to die at a June 3 meeting of the Nevada Department of Agriculture, and it did. Consumers won’t be put out nearly as much as the farmers who’ll now seek private by Georgia Fisher certification, though—their produce is still available, just bureaucratically complicated in some cases (see “Seeding Change,” May 28 RN&R, geo rg iaf@ and “Battle Grown,” April 9). The NDA program will run through next newsr evie w.c om March, then close altogether.

Meanwhile, a new bill is making the farming community uneasy yet again.

“Everyone got distracted in the pursuit to save organics when the real threat to Nevada’s local food supply was passing through legislative committees under our noses,” Great Basin Community Food Co-op manager Amber Sallaberry wrote in a mass email after the June 3 meeting.

She’s referring to Assembly Bill 77, an omnibus bill that as of press time awaited signature from Gov. Brian Sandoval. Part of the measure calls for all non-organic ag producers—minus ranchers who deal in livestock, poultry and animal products alone—to seek new certification from the NDA. The producer-certification program previously was optional, and not expensive so much as cumbersome. Now it applies to far more parties, including those at farmers’ markets, those who grow animal feed, those in the wine and nursery industries, potentially, and some groups that aren’t commercial at all.

“The language of the statute doesn’t exactly clarify if you have to sell it commercially or not,” said Rob Holley, of Dayton-based Holley Family To check A.B. 77’s progress, visit http:// Farms. “You have church and community gardens that grow food for bit.ly/1drkcFG people in need, and by the definition of the statute, they would have to have [a producer certificate] as well.”

That’s right—church and community gardens may need the state stamp, too.

“They’ve opened up a big can of worms,” Holley said, though he doubts it happened intentionally.

“A lot of it is unintentional,” agreed Mark O’Farrell, farmer and former chairman of the NDA’s organic advisory council. “It’s bureaucrats thinking they’re doing something to protect the public interest, and what they’re really doing is counterproductive.”

O’Farrell said the change amounts to “an increasing bureaucratic burden they’re placing on farmers, especially small farms, to meet the safety and health standards they have to require of large corporations, because those are inherently dangerous. … It’s in part to make it easier for them to assume control of the food supply, which apparently is what the mandate from the USDA will be when it comes down from the federal level [in the form of the Food Safety Modernization Act].”

As for A.B. 77, “We thought, ‘No way in hell would this ever go through, because it’s so bad,’ Sallaberry said. “Now it empowers the NDA to regulate nearly all of the sectors of agriculture in Nevada.” Ω

A weekend of dAy trips This is taking the easy way out—not staying home, but not having to make all the arrangements for a full-fledged week or weekend, either. Again, what you take with you will depend on the nature of the trip. A friend suggests, “Wine. Wine carrier with glasses and picnic utensils. Camera for taking photos and tablet for posting to Facebook.” Also take an ice chest, food and all the usual precautions in this desert state—water, above all.

Now, where to visit? ❍ Nevada City, of course, one of locals’ favorites, filled with gold rush country color, jewelry stores, concerts ❍ Lake Tahoe, not by any of the usual routes, but by driving south through Douglas County to Woodfords and then take one of the most beautiful drives in the West to Meyers (take a camera). ❍ Loyalton, just over the border in California, is an 800-person logging community where, Wikipedia tells us (so it must be true), people are “escaping from the growing Reno-Tahoe area” and where there is the Loyalton

Museum, great hiking, and—if you go for the Fourth of July holiday—a parade (it turns around and comes back, if you miss it the first time, and no, we’re not making this up) and the Rotary Picnic. ❍ Highway 89 from tourist attraction Truckee to tourist attraction Tahoe should be itself an attraction, given the lovely scenery, the Truckee River burbling alongside, the entry to Squaw Valley where the 1960 Winter Olympics were held, and the River Ranch Restaurant where lunch can be had on a deck over the river.

Lost weekend weekend We recognize that we are not the first media outlet to point out that Northern Nevada is a great place for binge drinking. However, we may be the first to promote the idea that the behavior is beneficial to mental health, as long as it’s kept to the confines of a two- or three-day weekend. This is more than a shopping list, it’s a way of life.

Rule 1: Don’t be drunk in public. Rule 2: Don’t use social media.

A Greener BArBecue Weekend

GArAGe-sAle Weekend Want to lighten up? Empty your house. The more you walk by the hideous, unused coat rack your favorite aunt gave you, the guiltier you’ll feel in ways that are subtle but powerful, so best to let someone else use it and love it. Remember, a good garage sale is less about profits than purging, so if you want real folding money, deal with eBay. Here’s how to rock things in your own yard:

We’re going to assume you’re like most Americans, and you know how to slap a burger, hot dogs and a cob of corn on the grill. That said, we’d like to encourage you to plan for a greener barbecue this year. Styrofoam cups and plates are among the worst things people routinely buy specifically to throw away after one use.

So plan ahead, and your friends, co-workers and family will be most impressed with your environmental bona fides. You can plan for a Saturday ’cue, but with proper planning, and friends who rally, you can make an entire weekend of it.

❍ Set a date, then post it online and via fliers a week in advance. ❍ Buy different colored stickers for price tags. If everything marked in green is 50 cents, for example, you won’t have to write much. ❍ Start your merch pile. Include consumables like printer paper you never use, unopened shampoo you don’t want, granola bars that suck but haven’t expired, etc. ❍ Find backup. You can run the sale on your own, but you’re going to have to pee at some point.

❍ Make a guest list. ❍ Make a menu, and make a list of what you need from the store.

❍ Talk with everyone who comes. You aren’t running some fancy boutique, son. ❍ Display a free beverage—say a pitcher of iced tea with plastic cups—at the entrance to your sale. There should be a cartoonishly huge “FREE” sign next to it, for snagging people. ❍ Model an easily removable item, such as a scarf or vest, with the price tag visible. ❍ When you’re ready to shut down, just start giving stuff away. Everyone who makes eye contact with you gets a free litter box or shoe insert. No take-backsies.

crAfty Weekend An artsy, crafty weekend is as fun as it gets, provided you don’t make it too big of a deal, since that messes with people’s creative mojo. In other words, don’t gather everyone ’round and be all clap-clapping, like, “Guys, we’ll start with a group selfie at 3:17. Billy, you sit here. It’s all nontoxic paint, and we’re making a collaborative composition with equidistant dots. They shall under no circumstances resemble eyeballs or nipples. And no splatters on the carpet, please.” Oh my god, fuck that. No. Find you some brown craft paper, cover your table or porch with it, add an armload of random art supplies and found or recycled objects, then see what happens. And consider the following: ❍ An anchor item to get you started. It may be cool wood from a trash pile; a stretched canvas from Michael’s; an old box, shell or animal skull to paint; or string/wire for beads. Maybe it’s a pair of jeans you want to mess with.

Whatever. Bring it out. ❍ Inspiration pages pulled from magazines. Yep, just like in high school. ❍ Glue, rubber cement, markers, pastels, brushes, paint or other obvious supplies (try the thrift store before you spend real money). And a water cup, too, if you’re painting.

❍ Pick up extra propane or charcoal and lighter fluid.

❍ Fire extinguisher

❍ Get some beer, wine and soft drinks.

Book lovers’ Weekend What you need most for a reading weekend is a setting. At home, you can shut off the phone and entertainment units—music would be the sole possible exception—and curl up in your favorite spot. Or there’s the backyard in a hammock, law chair, or stretched out on the lawn.

Leaving the house, there’s always the city’s parks, coffee houses, coffee houses in book stores, and—of course—the library.

In the latter case, since we are talking about relaxing and just reading, we recommend the downtown Washoe County Library branch with its still-gorgeous interior that won architectural awards and a letter of praise from the White House when it was first constructed.

It’s like being outdoors but climate controlled, and you won’t have to go far to look for something to read. Try these:

Couple’s Weekend Knowing what to pack here is difficult, given that the weekend could be anything from a chichi hotel to camping in the woods. We asked for advice from a friend, who offered these hints: “My favorite trip is Calistoga for hot springs and mud baths and massage and facial and wine and food and museum or historical site or classical music concert. I would bring a bathing suit, the New York Times crossword puzzle app, a little black dress and very high heels for dinner out, a reservation for car service to get around the wineries, and maybe a reservation for a balloon ride or something like that. A similar couple’s weekend in Northern Nevada would be a similar trip but to Walley’s Hot Springs. My list of things to bring would be the same, but the wine tasting tour is out so I would go to Genoa Bar and some antique shopping in the area. I love the Genoa Bar. I actually used to go there in the spring/summer almost every year because the area is so pretty that time of year. You could still do the balloon ride.” Sounds like a camera should also be on the to-take list. ❍ So, the first thing needed is a destination.

❍ Portland, an hour’s flight away, where one of the world’s most livable cities offers great hotels, cosmopolitan dining, endless music, great museums, and one of the world’s largest used bookstores. You can get a map at the front door to find your way around. ❍ Look around, and get out of the house.

Reno is filled with major hotels that boast of features besides gambling: spas and salons, shopping, swimming, climbing, wine tastings, dining.

hot August nights Weekend Renoites love to complain about Hot August Nights. The annual week-long event in early August is a lurid recreation of 1950s and 1960s culture and the giant, loud, obnoxious gasguzzling American monstrosities known as “classic cars.” You want an event where 55-year-old wingnuts in Hawaiian shirts and khaki shorts get drunk, pretend to be teenagers, and drive around, congesting Reno streets with smoke-spewing deathtraps that are louder than Godzilla howling into a Marshall amp? We got it. It’s basically an ongoing celebration of midlife crises.

However, when there was talk a couple of years ago about the event moving out of town many locals realized it was one of those things, like Park Lane Mall or Deux Gros Nez, that, although we love to complain about them, we’d sure miss if they were gone. Not only do those car people spend money like it was coal to burn, but the event is one of those things, like Brussels sprouts, the Twilight movies or The Eagles, that’s just fun to hate. So, here’s what you might need to learn to live with Hot August Nights. ❍ Earplugs (This is the most essential item for a peaceful coexistence with HAN, especially if you live in earshot of the freeway or any of the major thoroughfares like Virginia Street or Kietzke Lane, and have any desire to sleep.

On the positive side, Mad Max: Fury Road turned out to be a lot better than expected, and The D Train proved to be a nice fringe comedy. The dark sci-fi thriller Ex Machina is probably the best film of the season so far.

Sadly, in addition to the Avengers and San Andreas letdowns, there’s been a lot of disposable stuff like that garbage Poltergeist remake and that stupid Arnold Schwarzenegger zombie movie.

With a few months left, Arnie again, dinosaurs, Pac Man and the Minions will try to salvage summer 2015 and send us into Oscar season with some momentum.

Jurassic World (June 12): After a 14-year break, the dinos are back, this time with Chris Pratt and a hybrid dinosaur that makes the T Rex look like my Boston Terrier. I thought the first trailer looked like donkey spunk, but decent follow-up footage and some positive word of mouth have me optimistic. inside out (June 19): The ever reliable Pixar’s latest offering involves emotions battling inside a girl’s head. This looks like it could be one of Pixar’s more offbeat films, in the spirit of Up. ted 2 (June 26): Seth MacFarlane tries to bounce back after last year’s awful A Million Ways to Die in the West with a sequel to his foul-mouthed teddy bear hit. Mark Wahlberg returns but Mila Kunis is conspicuously absent from the cast list. Have people figured out that she can’t act worth dick? terminator Genisys (July 3): Just what in the heck is going to happen with this one? The dragon lady from Game of Thrones is the new Sarah Connor, and Governor Schwarzenegger returns, this time as an aging Terminator (no hair dye!).

Arnie actually fights himself as a younger Terminator in this movie.

I say if they pull that scene off, this can’t go wrong. maGic mike XXl (July 3): Channing Tatum once again plays a stripper who won’t show his balls.

I wonder if the sequel will attract a vast amount of seriously disappointed bachelorette parties like the original did. minions (July 10): The little yellow things from the Despicable Me movies get their own flick.

Eight-year-olds will be giggling their asses off, while I will miss the little girl who yelled, “It’s so fluffy I’m gonna die!” Maybe she’ll have a cameo. the GalloWs (July 10): Students revisit a play 20 years after somebody died on stage during a production of the show. This is probably not a good idea, and said student will probably show up and haunt the shit out of this situation.

While this looks creepy, it can’t be any more nightmarish than the high school production of Paint Your Wagon I sat through when I was a kid. That mess was horrifyingly toxic. ant-man (July 17): Director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) shepherded this project for a bunch of time, then bailed last year, breaking the hearts of geeks everywhere. While Paul Rudd as the title character certainly gives this film a fighting chance, I will always wonder what kind of subversive, nutty Marvel movie Wright would’ve given us. trainWreck (July 17): Amy Schumer stars for director Judd Apatow in this relationship comedy costarring Bill Hader.

Apatow has been making good movies lately, but nobody has been going to them. Schumer seems to be just the one to get him back on track at the box office. irrational man (July 17): Woody Allen’s 9,876th movie stars Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone. I have a feeling there will be a very neurotic character in this film. Call me crazy, but I think it could happen.

Pixels (July 24): Aliens, having opened up a time capsule from the ’80s, totally get the wrong message and send massive recreations of Pac Man, Donkey Kong and Centipede to destroy us. Adam Sandler, Peter Dinklage and Kevin James star in what looks like something striving for a bit of a Ghostbusters vibe. southPaw (July 24): Jake Gyllenhaal looks to be going all in as a boxer trying to win back custody of his son after the death of his wife. This one looks crazy.

Vacation (July 29): While Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo make a short return, this franchise restart stars Ed Helms as Rusty Griswald (played by Anthony Michael Hall in the original), who takes his family to Walley World to relive his childhood. The whole premise seems wrong to me. Didn’t Rusty have a pretty bad time the first time around? And why not just cast Anthony Michael Hall again? He’s alive. I think.

See change Anneliese Vobis Anyone who walks into Reno’s city hall this month is going to notice something strange. “Broccoli and cauliflower”— by Josie Luciano that’s what visitors are saying about the newest art installation, according to security guard Mark Lippert.

Another guard sees tripe. Christine Fey, the city of Reno’s arts and culture manager, imagines peering down from a rainforest canopy or a bank of clouds.

This slow build-up of bedrock feels even slower when compared to another ocean process highlighted by the artist—the rapid die-off of coral reefs. This issue is largely manmade and is caused by coral bleaching that occurs with the emergence of bright green killer algae that thrive in our warmer oceans, leaving entire ecosystems on the brink of extinction.

To call attention to this devastation, Vobis’ sculptures have the effect of taking over the space and the senses. Putrid green blooms remind the viewer of biological growth—not the slow moving tree kind, but the viral kind that seems to multiply in blobs and clots, popping out of the white walls like a rash.

Farther down the hall, white netting made of wire and plastic bags creeps across the gallery the way delicate marine skeletons might slowly consume a building. From a distance, the viewer observes what Fey calls “the smallest of the small.”

But then a funny thing happens.

Take a step closer and the “organisms” turn into “landscapes.”

Suddenly, the plastic bag netting resembles the gridded planes of a computer-generated landscape and the lime green algal blooms morph into the tiny forests found in every third grader’s diorama assignment on Donner Pass. All that’s missing from the scene are the ill-fated people.

Then again, it’s possible that people are more present than ever.

Who made the squeaky foam and bad-smelling paint? Who made the tiny sprays of plastic berries and plastic bags? No one could have created that crap except humans. No one would create something that useless except for us.

And maybe this contrast is exactly the point. When anyone with a camera can take a photo of a critical ocean habitat and every marine biologist will make the case for endangered species protection, it takes a special kind of artist to help us see ourselves when we look at the natural world. Then the real question becomes—do we like what we see? Ω

“Isn’t it funny how art can mean different things?” Fey said. From beautiful, biological masterpiece to grotesque craft store explosion, there are as many perspectives as there are people passing by.

To the artist—San Francisco sculptor Anneliese Vobis—her work is about “the strange beauty of environmental degradation.” Creating odd-looking pseudo-organisms with artificial materials is kind of her thing.

And Vobis’ latest thing is Symbiosis: a giant installation made of spray foam, green paint, fake flowers, felt and plastic bags that vaguely resembles coral algae and the planktonic protozoa known as radiolarian. The pieces explore the symbiotic relationship that these two micro-marine organisms share as well as the not-so-symbiotic relationship between humans and the environment.

From a biological standpoint, the word symbiosis is defined as “living together” and refers to a mutually beneficial relationship between two species. According to an email from Vobis, “Radiolarian often contain symbiotic algae; especially zooxantallae, which provide the energy for the cell. … When radiolarian die, their glass shells sink to the bottom of the ocean into what is called the Radiolarian Ooze. It eventually forms sedimentary rock.”

Miguel had personal anecdotes of extraterrestrial encounters he’d share at the drop of a hat. His restaurant was decorated in an amazing amalgam of classic Mexican restaurant kitsch and icons of UFOlogy, piñatas and flying saucers hung about with wild abandon. I loved it, and I loved the food.

Though not entirely what would be considered “authentic,” it was classic Mexican-American grub.

After Miguel’s passing the restaurant fell to his descendants to carry on. They got rid of the little green men and renovated the decor to what can best be called “generic Mexican-American.” I felt the menu also suffered with the change and eventually parted ways with my standby favorite.

After over 50 years of success in what is now called Midtown, the family has opened a second location in a space vacated by a sub-par chain restaurant. They’ve done a pretty nice job converting the quasi-Italian decor into something Mexican, complete with Frida Kahlo prints and bright, zesty colors. The service was pretty quick on the draw. House Margaritas were served in 20-ounce schooners—over ice as they should be—sweeter than I prefer but still a

good deal ($7.50). If anything, our entrees followed the appetizers a little too soon. Most of the food was wellprepared by way of texture and assembly, the portions more than ample.

The refried beans and rice were fine.

The tortilla chips were thin, crispy and served warm. Yet the salsa had barely any heat or spice, a warning for the seasoning of dishes in general.

We began with albondigas soup ($2), which might be the item I enjoyed most. Savory broth, large vegetable chunks, tender meatball.

Pretty sizable portion for the price, outstanding on flavor and value. Less amazing was the bean and cheese chorizo dip ($5.95), essentially a pool of molten queso asadero, refritos, and meat that didn’t remotely read sausage. If I hadn’t read the menu, I’d have thought it was unseasoned ground beef. The less I say about the completely uncrisp cheese crisp appetizer the better ($3.95).

I understand not all people like the heat of chilies the way I do. I accept there need to be options for folks who consider ketchup “too spicy.” But certain cuisines come with an expectation of heat, and Mexican is likely the first thing most Americans will say when asked, “What’s a spicy food?” Every single dish we sampled had plenty of body and salt, but was almost completely devoid of capsaicin heat.

Among entrees ordered were chicken enchilada with chile relleno ($9.95), cheese enchilada with shredded beef taco ($10.95), chimichanga ($10.50 plus $1.25 for carnitas), and bistec ranchero ($11.95). The enchiladas and relleno were above average, the chimi was expertly crispy, and its pork was perfectly cooked, albeit cruelly thwarted from perfection by lack of seasoning. Ranchero sauce is usually more akin to beef gravy, so the lack of spice here is actually acceptable. The beef and vegetables were cooked just right.

Two small sopapillas completed the meal ($0.25 each), and though they weren’t as airy and pillowy as those I remember from Albuquerque, they still played their part as dessert.

Miguel’s has a roomy new space with food that is 90 percent close to being quite good. Barring a change in the kitchen, a caddy of hot sauce bottles on every table would do wonders for the experience. Ω

Shaken and stirred Spy Spy is yet another spoof of the James Bond spy movie genre, and it’s a good one thanks to the presence of Melissa McCarthy. It doesn’t hurt that the film is written and directed by Paul Feig, who gave her an Oscar-nominated role in Bridesmaids. The team followed up that piece of comic brilliance with the fun, police-buddy comedy The Heat. by Now comes Spy, where McCarthy plays Bob Grimm Susan Cooper, a CIA agent chained to a desk in service of her partner in the field, b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m Bradley Fine (Jude Law). Circumstances call for Susan to go into the field for the first time, and she must leave her bat-infested CIA basement behind.

While Susan is hoping for a cool spy name and bitching spy gadgets, her commander (an acerbic Allison Janney) insists upon cat-lady cover identities and gadgets disguised in rape whistles and hemorrhoid wipes.

In the field, she must do battle with an evil arms trader Rayna (deliciously nasty Rose Byrne) while contending with rogue agent Rick Ford (a surprisingly hilarious Jason Statham) who doesn’t believe she is up to the task. The mission takes her all over the world to locales like Rome and Paris, while requiring her to sport some pretty embarrassing grandma wigs.

One of the film’s great running gags is how relatively unattractive the whole spy racket is. While James Bond gets to race around in an Aston Martin, Susan does her chasing on a clumsy scooter. While Bond had the best of hotel accommodations, Susan is put up in a very “murdery” hotel full of rats.

And, yes, while the CIA basement has awesome computers and high tech gadgets, it’s infested with bats and rodents who shit on birthday cakes. Another great running gag would be that Susan, despite her years sitting behind a desk, turns out to be quite

the badass in a fight. Some of the best scenes in the movie involve her in impressive knife and gun fights.

For all of her talents as a physical comedienne, McCarthy’s true strengths lie in her ability to shoot off rapid-fire insults at unsuspecting victims. She and Byrne have a couple of verbal square-offs in this film where you have to believe the two actresses were given permission to just go at it and see what happens. Man, you don’t want to face off with McCarthy in an insult contest.

The deck is stacked against you.

Speaking of “face off,” Statham’s character establishes his quick-mouthed, boneheaded and extremely funny character with his belief that the CIA has a face-off machine like the one used in the classic Travolta-Cage showdown. Statham has never really been given a chance to show his comedic chops before. Not only does he rise to the occasion, but he demonstrates that perhaps his career has been going in the wrong direction from the very beginning.

Get this man into more comedies!

Next up for the Feig and McCarthy combo is Ghostbusters, featuring a female roster replacing the likes of Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray. Fellow Bridesmaids alumnus Kristen Wiig is in the fold, and the closer we get to this, the more I get excited that Bill Murray passed, and the ladies are going to get their shot. There’s a lot of comedic talent already in the cast, which also includes Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong and Leslie Jones from Saturday Night Live.

I still think the best Melissa McCarthy movie moment is her outtake at the end of Judd Apatow’s This is 40, but there’s no doubt Feig gets the best entire film performances out of the golden lady. Spy gets credit for letting her show off her entire comedic arsenal rather than just having her fall down a lot. Ω

Mad Max: Fury Road

George Miller is back in his post apocalyptic world of Mad Max, messing around with fast rigs on desert landscapes.

He has a new Max, Tom Hardy replacing Mel Gibson, and Charlize Theron is along for the ride. The results are a blast, probably the best in the franchise when it comes to action. I’m going to have to give a few points to Gibson over Hardy for his Max portrayal.

Hardy is good in the role, but Gibson is the original and best Max, even if Gibson is a total asshole. The film starts off with a shot reminiscent of The Road Warrior (a.k.a. Mad Max 2), and then it just goes berserk. Max gets himself captured by a really disgusting looking, villainous ruler named Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and finds himself hanging upside down and providing blood for a pale, bald Joe minion, Nux (Nicholas Hoult). A shaven-headed Theron shows up as Imperator Furiosa, a one-time loyalist of Immortan Joe, who tricks him and kidnaps his wives, intent on taking them to some sort of green promised land. When Joe figures out she’s making a run for it, his soldiers (who look a little like the cave creatures from The Descent) take off after her. This includes Nux, with Max strapped to the front of his car wearing a facemask reminiscent of his Bane getup in The Dark Knight Rises. The folks who put the look of this movie together, from it’s terrific cinematography, to its costuming to its incredible stunt work, all deserve praise and extra beers.

Poltergeist

In the original Poltergeist, a dude eating a drumstick tears his face off while looking in a mirror, throwing chunks of bloody flesh in a sink. Somehow, that movie managed to get a PG rating. In this remake, Sam Rockwell cries, and somehow they get the PG-13 rating. I love Sam Rockwell, but it’s hard to watch him work up tears for this dreck. Actually, this movie is hard to watch from start to finish, even if you haven’t seen the original. Original director Tobe Hooper (teaming with writer-producer Steven Spielberg) managed a good, horrific treat spiked with humor back in 1982. This paltry remake from director Gil Kenan loses all of the spark of the original, and gives us a routine haunting movie with cheap scares involving clown dolls that don’t actually scare and kid actors who fail to register. I won’t single them out because they are kids, but they do suck. Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt squirm through the roles originated

by Craig T. Nelson and Jobeth Williams. There was no good reason for this undertaking.

The movie shouldn’t have been remade. If somebody dares to try and remake Jaws, I will be truly pissed off. Leave the Spielberg properties alone!

San Andreas

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays rescue pilot Ray, a gutsy and virtuous man on the job who, nevertheless, can’t keep things together on the home front. He gets divorce papers from wife Emma (Carla Gugino) on the day he’s supposed to take his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) on a trip. Before he can pout and dwell on things too long, the earth starts shaking for what will be a series of devastating earthquakes. When it’s all over, numerous quakes and tsunamis have destroyed Los Angeles, San Francisco and the Hoover Dam. While the destruction looks great, and director Brad Peyton pulls out all of the stops when it comes to destroying California, the dialogue in this film is atrocious. When Ray heads out to save his wife in L.A. and his daughter in San Francisco, it’s often the worst of soap operas. Yes, it’s fun to see the San Francisco Giant’s stadium get smoked, especially if you’re a Dodger fun, but it’s no fun listening to the words spoken by performers before and after the devastation.

Granted, dialogue in a disaster movie doesn’t have to be top quality, but this stuff makes a Michael Bay movie sound like a Paul Thomas Anderson movie.

Slow West

Michael Fassbender just keeps on rolling with this one, a gritty, appropriately downbeat Western from writer-director John Maclean. Fassbender plays Silas, a cynical, grouchy rider on the American frontier in the 19th century who comes across Jay, a Scottish boy (Kodi-Smit McPhee) traveling alone in search of Rose (Caren Pistorious), a girl he loves. She and her father had to flee to America after an accident, and now they have a bounty on their heads. Silas knows of the bounty, but he doesn’t tell Jay. After coming across a group of bandits led

by Payne (the ever reliable Ben Mendelsohn), Silas must decide on whose side he’s going to back, the boy or the bandits. It’s a great ride, with a vivid depiction of the Old West unlike any I’ve seen before. By the time the action reaches Rose’s farm, a single house out in the middle of nowhere, you get a sense of just how few people were inhabiting that part of the world at this time. McPhee is heartbreaking as a young man who just doesn’t get it, and Fassbender continues to prove he’s a cinematic treasure. They make for a great screen duo. The future is a little confusing and convoluted, but kind of cool anyway, in director-writer Brad Bird’s (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles) interesting enough ode to one of Disney’s most popular park attractions. Boy genius Frank Walker (Thomas Robinson) and his jetpack attend the 1964 World’s Fair in Queens, New York, during a wonderful sequence that recreates the legendary event. After sparring with the curator of an invention contest (Hugh Laurie), the despondent boy winds up on a bench sulking, only to be given a special pin by a mysterious young girl named Athena (the absolutely incredible Raffey Cassidy). The action cuts to years later, when that same girl gives a pin to teenager Casey (Britt Robertson).

The pin, when touched, transports Casey to a seemingly future land where invention is encouraged. Casey eventually winds up with a grown Frank (George Clooney), and they travel back to Tomorrowland to save our world. The script was co-written by Lost and Prometheus scribe Damon Lindelof, so, naturally, all of the dots don’t seem to be connected. Lindelof can be a little ambiguous, even confusing at times, but he’s always interesting. If you like your movies tied up in a nice little bow, the works of Lindelof are not for you. As for me, I have a fun time trying to figure his stuff out, even if I don’t come up with all of the answers.

This haunted house story plays like something many years ago. That’s due in part to a cast that includes Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator), Larry Fessenden (Session 9) and Monte Markham (The Love Boat). It’s also due in part to the reality that writer-director Ted Geoghegan is exemplary at putting a movie together that has a look and feel like it could have played in a double feature with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre back in the day. Crampton plays a woman who moves into an old house with her husband (Andrew Sensenig) after the death of their son. Soon, Crampton notices a “presence” that she thinks is the spirit of her boy, but a visit from a mysterious old man (Markham) reveals that the house has a violent history. Then, well, things get really, really awful and bloody. The ghosts in this movie are well done, sort of a burnt up version of the ghosts from John Carpenter’s The Fog. The scares are real and effective; I can honestly say that no attempt at a scare in this movie falls flat. Fessenden has one of the best possession scenes you will see this side of the original The Exorcist, and Wojciech Golczewski provides a score that ties the film together nicely. It’s old-school horror done on a meager budget with an intention to scare you in real ways. Bravo. (Available for rent on iTunes, Amazon.com and On Demand during a limited theatrical release.)

They would love it. They just don’t know how to get started.”

She said it can be inspirational just to see other women behind the decks. She cited seeing Ana Sia, a Los Angeles-based DJ, who comes to Reno regularly, as very inspirational.

“This was before I was a DJ, and I was just amazed at her style and how she kind of controlled the environment of the whole evening,” said Adkins.

“It was just cool to see that she could do that. … Usually, people starting DJ-ing, they’re younger and they’re male. It just inspired me.”

She said other well-known local female DJs, like Teagan Thais and Georgette Crush, will also be participating in the event at 1up. There will be Jameson-flavored cupcakes and T-shirts that read “fuck ladies night.”

This is to emphasize that the event is an educational workshop, and not the typical club ladies’ night.

“It’s not really like, ‘look at all these hot girl DJs for all you boys,’ like ladies’ night usually is—it’s pretty condescending,” she said.

Adkins and her husband, Ed, own Let’s Do Things, a special events production company that puts on most of the big bar crawl events around town, like the upcoming Superhero Crawl on July 18.

She’s comfortable DJ-ing to a variety of audiences, including the more traditional dance clubbers at 1up and the rockers, tattoo artists and hip-hop heads at Shea’s. She’s even stretched out to perform at Burning Man-affiliated events, where the crowds generally expect upbeat dance music. For those sets, she’ll start with electronic music.

“I kind of lure people in a little bit, and as soon as I get them moving and dancing and liking the sounds—I play stuff with weird sounds and experimental type stuff—and then I’ll throw in a hip-hop song, and it’s pretty cool, because they would not normally listen to this music.”

Playing at Shea’s, she said, requires the opposite approach. “I have to go from a crowd that normally wants to hear songs they can sing along to, and then I throw on some dark, cool, whompy electronic stuff, and usually they’re like, ‘Wow, that’s so cool.’ … I didn’t think I would do well at Shea’s, because it’s usually kind of a rock crowd, but if I play really offensive stuff, they love it.” Ω

Local sex toy shop Adam & Eve sponsored the party, and raffled off a music-powered vibrator.

Adkins is also spearheading an event called We Can Do It Wednesdays, a monthly educational workshop for women who want to learn how to DJ. The first event will be on June 17 at 1up, 214 W. Commercial Row, the dance club that Adkins describes as “the foundation of electronic music in Reno.” For $10, participants can learn how to use a mixer, loop tracks, match beats and other DJ skills. The workshop will be from 7 to 10 p.m., followed by an after-party with an all-female DJ lineup. Adkins said she anticipated half a dozen participants, but 40 have already registered.

She said that DJ-ing is a maledominated industry, which can alienate some women who would otherwise be interested. She said it was intimidating the first time she DJ-ed at a club a few years ago.

“I came in and it was a bunch of younger boys, playing video games on their phones, all huddled around their phones. And I felt so awkward, just coming into this boys’ environment. And a lot of girls feel that way.

The weekly event also features cooking demos, food and health tutorials and the Kids Connect Zone. The market is open from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, June 11-Aug. 20, at the corner of Victorian Avenue and 10th Street in downtown Sparks. The event will be closed on Aug. 6 for Hot August Nights. QUAIL QUEST: TRUCKEE MEADOWS TREASURE HUNT: Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation presents this all-day photo scavenger day. Owe, baby, baby My girlfriend always cries that she’s “broke.” I just ended up buying her groceries and paying to have her car fixed, and then I discovered by accident that she’d recently paid hundreds of dollars for hair extensions, beauty products and a facial. She isn’t the first girlfriend I’ve had who prioritizes beauty stuff over necessities. I really don’t get some women’s relationship with money.

Some personal financial crises are caused by unexpected events, and others simply by how one answers certain basic questions, such as “Hmm, get waxed or continue living with electricity?” or “I can’t decide: New brakes or traffic-stopping hair?”

Old-school economists, who view humans as hyperrational data-crunching machines (like big, sweaty chessplaying computers), would tell you that it makes no sense for your girlfriend to keep ending up, as the saying goes, with so much month at the end of the money. (And sure, car trouble can pop up out of nowhere, but it isn’t like the need to eat comes as a surprise.)

Evolutionary economists take a more nuanced view of human rationality. They find that our glaringly irrational choices in one domain (like the survival domain, including financial survival) aren’t so irrational in another (like the mating domain). For example, because men evolved to have a very visually driven sexuality, women looking to land a man or retain one’s interest will (often subconsciously) prioritize beauty measures— sometimes buying eye creams so pricey they should come with power steering and a sunroof.

And though we aren’t in a recession right now, a July-August 2014 Public Religion Research Institute poll found that 72 percent of people believe we are. This is relevant because research by evolutionary psychologist Sarah Hill finds that though economic downturns lead both men and women to cut their spending across the board, they also seem to prime women to increase their spending in one area: beauty enhancement. Hill explains that a scarcity of resources appears to cue an evolutionary adaptation in women to “increase the effort they invest in attracting a mate who has them.” And this seems to be the case even when a woman has resources of her own.

lines with a big purse. Tell her that you feel bad being put in this position and though you love her, her abusive relationship with her debit card is eating away at your relationship. A mate-retention warning light should go off in her head. Next, show empathy. Mention that many people find themselves in her position, mainly because nobody ever taught them how to budget, and we aren’t all natural fiscal wizards. In fact, we’re more like chimps with credit cards.

To help her conscious mind better understand her subconscious one, explain the evolutionary view of human rationality and offer to help her plot out her finances. You might get her the book Smart Women Finish Rich by David Bach. And because our decisionmaking ability evolved in an ancestral environment where we typically had just a handful of visible choices in front of us (like five bison and one with a limp)—as opposed to big mathematical abstractions to chew on—you can help her get a better grip on her spending by making it visual. As for how helpful visuals can be in decision-making, evolutionary cognitive psychologist Gary Brase finds that people are far better at understanding medical risks when they are communicated with pictures (for example, 100 little people on a page shaded to show that this many of 100 will be cured and this many will end up going home in an urn).

In keeping with Brase’s findings, you could draw little rectangles all over a page to represent $100 bills (in the amount of her monthly salary). Color in blocks of dollars to indicate all her monthly expenses, including any potential expenses, and offer to help her budget until she gets the hang of it. If you’re open to paying for the occasional item that’s not in her financial plan, let her know, but explain that you’d like to be asked first, not just informed that all of her dollar bills have run off and taken up residence in the cash register at Sephora. And finally, while you’re helping her tally things up, you might take a moment to count your blessings. Your girlfriend might be a little money-dumb, but she seems to understand the importance of keeping up her curb appeal—mindful that there’s a reason men get accused of talking to a woman’s breasts and not her calculator. Ice cream man Jeremy DeMarzo even looks like an ice cream guy. Maybe it’s the handlebar mustache, but he’s got an aura infused with a kind of straightforward appreciation of simpler pleasures—bicycles, ice cream, sandwiches. His taste in ice cream is a little more eclectic than that, combining flavors like lavender and rock salt and Earl Gray tea and Sriracha (not necessarily together, but not necessarily not together, either).

He has a bicycle-powered ice cream shop with an umbrella and music that you see at events around town.

His shop, IceCycle Creamery, 6147 Lakeside Drive, which he opened with his wife, Leilani, is also a deli that has a penchant for combining unexpected flavors. What made you open an ice cream store?

I have been making ice cream of unique flavors for about four years, kind of as a hobby. We thought Reno really needed it, so we decided to start with the bike and start small last summer, and just see how the response was, and if people were into the stuff we were making. And it was a great response, so we decided to move forward and move forward and open up the shop.

I’ve only been in there once, but I was quite intrigued. How do you come up with those unusual combinations?

So how many flavors do you serve at a single time and how big is your repertoire?

We consistently have 16 flavors in our case. We carry four of the flavors all the time: plain chocolate, vanilla bean, cookie roulette, and our signature unique flavor, Home Means Nevada, which is sage and pine nuts. Everything else sloughs out depending on what I have, what goes, and then I’ll replace it with something else. I probably have close to a hundred flavors I’ve done now. ... I know we were at like 50 at the end of last summer, and we’ve added probably another 30, so we’re around 80 flavors now.

I don’t know ... different things I eat sometimes. I just get inspiration in all kinds of different places—breakfast foods, sandwiches, cocktails. Some stuff just comes to me, and I’ll think the flavor will work well, and I’ll just make it.

How much experimentation does it take to get it right? I picture you making really small batches to get the flavors right, and then going to a big one, or do you just dive in?

What did you do when you weren’t making ice cream?

I kind of dive in. I followed my recipes for how to make ice cream for a couple of years before we started doing this, and everything just clicked. Some stuff, I know exactly what the flavor is going to do. Some stuff I need to taste and add more, like a curry powder or a chili, you kind of need to go by taste.

Sanders for president Well, it just shows to go ya. Last week, I ranted it up about the mind-glazing length of our presidential campaigns these days, and how it would be just peachy to have limits of time and money on them and so forth, and now—now I want to hit the stump for my man Bernie! My revised stance on all this—I’m fed up to the max with campaigns of 20-24 months. Just fit to be tied! But 16-18 month campaigns, OK, those are jiffy.

But seriously, shortly after I turned in my piece last week, I saw a report about how Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont and newly announced candidate for the democratic presidential nomination, was actually causing a bit of a stir with his early appearances in Iowa. That a lot of Iowans were showing up because they wanted to hear Bernie’s message, and they wanted to hear it was because the guy might be kind of refreshing. That he just may be a throwback to—dare I say it—FDR? A quick look, courtesy of his web site, reveals why Bernie is getting

On the issue of income inequality, Sanders says, “If it’s too big to fail, it’s too big to exist.” He’s introduced legislation in the Senate that would break up those huge monolithic banks that have become TBTF. Which sounds, after 2009, fairly sensible. He also notes the staggeringly obscene reality of modern America that one family—one, the Waltons—owns as much wealth as the bottom 42 percent. That sure wasn’t the case in 1970 or ’90.

On the issue of campaign finance reform, Sanders writes “Congress must pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and move toward public funding of elections.” Who would disagree? Besides a lobbyist with three homes?

On climate change, Bernie says, “We must transform our energy system away from polluting fossil fuels and towards energy efficiency and sustainability. … We need to greatly accelerate technological progress in wind and solar.”

There will be many who will try to portray Sanders as a commie, a

radical, someone to dismiss out of hand. But every time I listen to the guy, I hear a reasonable man who actually gives a damn about America’s beleaguered middle class, and has the energy to do something about it, someone who can get me to fish out the Visa card.

If Sanders is gonna create some mojo, if he is gonna jerk Hillary’s chain, he’s gonna need a few months to build some of that good ole populist grass roots ground swell. We can say this much—he’s off to a very interesting start. If he’s gonna be this year’s Jimmy Carter, he’ll need some time to get the buzz buzzin’. Right now, it might be wise to check all assumptions at the door. And let’s see what happens when Elizabeth Warren tells all of her broken-hearted people that she’s totally down with the Berninator. Ω
