‘Believe in yourself’ Q&A: A.S. PreSIdeNt dylAN GrAy ON CAmPuS lIfe by

Jason Cassidy j aso nc @new srev i ew. c o m

f you’re looking for an upperclassman to get advice from on navigating your first year at Chico State, you could hardly do better than Dylan Gray. The senior political science major came to Chico from Morningside High School in Inglewood and has since played an active role at the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center and on the Student Affairs Diversity Committee. He just finished up a year as the Associated Students commissioner of diversity affairs and was elected to the post of A.S. president for 2017-18. Just out of high school, Gray got the chance to meet with President Barack Obama. The experience was inspirational for Gray, who says that, after he graduates from Chico State, he plans to go to law school. The goal is to start his own practice and eventually run for political office. Gray sat down with the CN&R in a lounge in the Bell Memorial Union to offer advice on making the most of your time in Chico.

Where’S the beSt plaCe to StuDy?

I wish someone would’ve told me this: There are so many student services available, tailored to every single student. And if there is not a student service you feel you can connect to, then A.S. will create a student service [for you]. First, come to the BMU, come to the second floor, speak to a representative and get involved. Get connected.

The more students feel connected to our campus, the more overall student success improves. So, if you find that person you can study with … and not just study with but who you can hang out with and talk personal with, that is when you can overall feel comfortable at Chico State. And that’s when students can thrive. Get involved some way, somehow.

What’S the biGGeSt aDJuStMent you haD to Make after MovinG to ChiCo? I had a culture shock, definitely. Los Angeles is a melting pot. The city is all I knew—concrete jungle. So, it was just hard for me to get used to the small-town feeling. But, on the other hand, you come to grow and appreciate that. You’ll walk down the street and people are saying hello to you. That vibe and that energy that you get from other people is something that I’ve come to truly value.

My first two years, [it] was the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center, definitely. They have their quiet hours and things like that, but also someone will see you doing your work and they’ll say, “Oh, what class are you taking?” That’s that connection that I’m talking about.

any WorDS of Caution? It’s really easy to get caught up in the party scene. But as long you can stay focused, there’s nothing wrong with partying. Everything has to have a balance

… you’re not 50 percent partying and 50 percent academics. That’s the key to failure. More time should be devoted to your academics. Time management is very crucial.

That new Parkside Tap House [300 Main St.] … is a great place to go hang out with friends. They have little lawn games and things like that. But, primarily, I’m going to have to say campus. Something’s always going on. I just hosted the International Festival on the Kendall

First and foremost, if no one else does, believe in yourself. Seek out those resources. Have confidence in everything that you do. Believe in yourself and dream big, because, truly and honestly—and I’m a testament to this—anything is possible here at Chico State. Coming from Inglewood, I did not think that I was going to be student body president, but here I am today. l

whAt’S your fAvorite thinG About ChiCo? Most favorite would have to be the hikes—the fresh air, the natural everything. You don’t get this where I’m from. You have to drive an hour or so away to do all that, but Bidwell Park is right in our backyard.

where’S the beSt burrito in town? Right now, I’m really going to Serrano’s [Mexican Grill, 645 W. Fifth St.] a lot, as well as La Familia Studying for finals in the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center’s lounge

TUBE THE SAC Because Chico’s a residential campus, it’s easy to forget that the state’s largest river is right in our backyard. One of our favorite ways to beat the heat is to rent a tube and float on the waterway, from nearby Hamilton City to Scotty’s Landing. Alcohol is prohibited along that stretch on Labor Day weekend, but you can imbibe other times. Just take it easy. The river may not look dangerous, but the downed trees (called “strainers”) have the potential to pull you under. Look ahead to avoid them. Also, the water is really cold—like 60 degrees. Bring sunscreen, plenty of water and a snack. Buy a burger and fries at Scotty’s before you head back to town. Launch at Irvine Finch River Access—located just over the Sacramento River in Hamilton City

12

GET A SCOOP (OR THREE) If you think your hometown ice cream shop is great, wait till you try Shubert’s. This old-timey purveyor of sweet treats crafts its “Chico famous” varieties, including several seasonal options, in small batches. We’re partial to the Chico Mint—a milk-chocolatey cream with pieces of Shubert’s signature homemade green mint candy scattered throughout. Other favorites: Turtle, Black Cherry, Cookie Dough—heck, they’re all delicious. Seriously, though, try the Chico Mint. 178 E. Seventh St.

the Crazy Horse Saloon. It may not become your regular hangout, but it’s the only place in town with a mechanical bull. Order a stiff drink and hop on that big boy. If you tip in advance of your ride, you just might make it to eight seconds. Yeehaw! 303 Main St.

RIDE THE BULL When you hit 21 and can finally explore Chico’s bar scene, you’ll quickly settle into the places where you feel most comfortable. At least once after becoming legal, you have to check out downtown’s cowboy bar,

Race a tRike You don’t need to be an athlete to partake in the Trike Races each Wednesday night at Madison Bear Garden—aka “The Bear.” You just need to be willing to humiliate yourself a little by wearing a giant bra over your clothes, hopping on an adult-size tricycle and racing around the bar in front of a bunch of strangers. At the finish line, you’ll chug a beer. If you can do all that faster than your competitors, the bragging rights (and Bear Bucks!) are all yours. Do it, and bask in the glory. 316 W. Second St.

Strap on a bra, and strap in for a trike race.

take a dip Chico in the summer is hot—like, volcanically hot—and you’ll inevitably need some relief. Rather than standing next to the producemisting system in the grocery store, look to one of the many swimming holes along Big Chico Creek, Butte Creek and the Feather River. In addition to the classic concrete swimming hole called Sycamore Pool at One-Mile Recreation Area in Lower Bidwell Park, refreshing dips are to be had at Bear and Salmon holes in Upper Park and the flumes in Paradise. This way, you won’t get yourself banned from Safeway. www.bidwellpark.org

outside your comfort zone for a taste of the real Chico. The Butcher Shop: www.facebook.com/ TheButcherShopChico Blue Room Theatre: 139 W. First St., www.blueroomtheatre.com

hit the MaRketS You’re probably used to shopping at big-name stores for things like produce, bread, eggs, nuts, meat and wine. But you can pick up all of those things—and much more (jewelry, pottery, candy, cut flowers)—at Chico’s farmers’ markets. We have two favorites. First, there’s the year-round market each Saturday morning. It’s your best bet for foodstuffs and cool knickknacks, though it also has great options for prepared food (Guzzetti’s Indian Food is to die for!). The other is the seasonal Thursday Night Market, from April through September. It also offers produce and other edibles, including a nice selection of food trucks, but it has a more carnival-like feel. Chico Certified Farmers’ Market: Saturday, 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Second and Wall streets. Thursday Night Market: April through September, 6-9 p.m., downtown Chico (Broadway, from Second to Fifth streets). BUcket liSt continued on page 14

The Butcher Shop: theater at its freakiest.

Meet chico in the plaza The City Plaza is Chico’s meeting place, and throughout the year it’s host to a range of free, public events that get to the heart of our community. The big-ticket items include the weekly Friday Night Concerts and Thursday Night Market that happen during the good-weather months. But some of the most interesting events are the weird one-offs, most notably the Pumpkinhead endurance contest, hosted by local radio station Z-Rock during Halloween season, wherein contestants try to outlast each other while standing still with a carved pumpkin over their heads. That’s the good stuff.

enjoy weiRd theateR Chico’s funky side is perhaps best exemplified in its community theater productions. And the funkiest of them all is without a doubt the annual Butcher Shop theater fest. On Labor Day weekend, local thespians and visiting ex-pats stage a free happening in the orchards south of town, with original avant garde one-acts sharing stages with local art and music. The Butcher Shop’s freaky nature can be traced back to the beginnings of downtown’s Blue Room Theatre, the black-box space above Collier Hardware that stages modern and contemporary works year round. ViSit the motherShip Chico’s Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. may be a giant in the craft beer industry now, but the brewery has surprisingly humble roots. Back in the 1970s, founder Ken Grossman spent months driving through rural farming communities trying to find scraps of stainless steel tanks, which he then repurposed into custom-built brewing equipment. You’ll learn all about Grossman’s early days when you take one of several tours offered by the brewery (which include beer samples if you’re of age). The brewhouse and sustainability tours are free, but you have to call ahead to reserve your spot. 1075 E. 20th St., 899-4776, www.sierranevada.com

tour the manSion You may have noticed the big, pink house on The Esplanade. That’s the Bidwell Mansion—a three-story, 26-room home completed in 1868 for John and Annie Bidwell, the pioneers who founded Chico. They lived there until they died in 1900 and 1918, respectively. Now a museum and State Historic Park, the mansion is one of Chico’s most iconic landmarks, a relic that offers a glimpse into a bygone era. For an hour-long tour, call or drop by the visitor center next door to the mansion. 525 Esplanade, 895-6144, www. facebook.com/BidwellMansionSHP l Bidwell Mansion

7 ways to bust a gut … WITHOUT BUSTING YOUR WALLET

by

Meredith J. Cooper me re d i thc @ n ew sr ev i ew. com

C

hico is very much a college town, with a lot of food options. But not all cheap meals are the same. The trick is finding the places where quality meets value. With that in mind, here are seven ways to bust a gut ... without busting your wallet.

1. WITH PIZZA. Literally across the street from

16

campus is one of Chico’s best pizza parlors, Celestino’s New York Pizza. Order a medium or extra large pie (yes, they come in only two sizes) or by the slice, for sit-down, take-out or delivery. Slices range from $3.25-$4 and student discounts are available. If New York-style thin crust ain’t your thing, you can walk a few blocks to Woodstock’s Pizza, home of Wednesday night trivia (8 p.m., signups at 4 p.m.) and sauce-filled crust. A slice and a soda totals $5.25, plus students get $6 off extra-large pies. Celestino’s, 101 Salem St. (with sister stores in the Safeway shopping center on East Avenue in Chico, in Paradise and in Oroville), celestinosnypizza.com. Woodstock’s, 166 E. Second St., woodstockschico.com

GOIN’ CHICO 2017 • C h i c o N e w s & R e v i e w

2. WITH A SIDE OF TECHNO. Peking Chinese Restaurant is one of those rare gems that must be seen to be understood. A fast, affordable eatery by day and night, after the dishes are cleared each Friday, it turns into an underground (literally) hotspot for electronic dance music, aptly named the Bassmint. The food here is reliably good and portion sizes are ample, so you can either share or make two meals from one. Try the house chow mein and the cream cheese wontons. Lunch specials ($6.25-$8, rice and soup included), online ordering and delivery available. 243 W. Second St., www.pekingchinesechico.com; www.facebook.com/ChicoBassMint

3. AT HAPPY HOUR. When most people hear the term “happy hour,” they think of discounted drinks. Of course, that’s true in Chico, too, but that sacred afternoon sweet spot also offers diners on a budget an opportunity to taste the good life when upscale restaurants offer fine food at affordable prices. Go to 5th Street Steakhouse (Monday-Friday, 4:30-6 p.m.) for the sliders made with prime beef (three for $6), Crush Italian Cuisine & Lounge (3:30-6:30 p.m.) for personal pizzas ($9-$10) and its killer second story patio, Burgers & Brew (Monday-Friday, 3-6 p.m.) for its eclectic, discounted fries

They don’t skimp on the meat here, and shrimp doesn’t cost you extra. Our pick is the carnitas, though—so good they’re known to run out before day’s end. or all you hungry, budget-minded students out there, do not fear. You need not be relegated to a diet of ramen and $5 pizzas—not in Chico, anyway. Here, you’ll have access to authentic tacos for $2 or less no matter what neighborhood you find yourself in. And for those new town, here’s a handy map showing all the taco trucks and taquerias we know of (family-style restaurants and fast-food chains not included) whose tacos do not break the $2 barrier. Plus, CN&R editors share some of our favorite spots. Note: Trucks are mobile by nature, so locations may change—though most stay put year-round.

4. ISLAND-STYLE. Get away for a moment … without having to actually get away. The prime island destination is the Philippines and Inday’s Restaurant, an authentic Filipino cafe where dinners (Friday-Saturday) are served family-style on banana leaves, bamboo lines the walls and chickens roam the parking lot. Lunch is prime deal time, with items on the abbreviated menu and rotating specials ranging from $5-$7. Also open for breakfast daily (closed Mondays). If you’re craving a Western island vibe, go around the corner to Sipho’s Restaurant & Cafe. The

22

trick here is to go when there’s live music—there’s nothing else quite like chowing down on some jerk chicken or curried goat while sitting in the sun listening to live reggae. There’s a buffet during special events, which means you get to try a little of everything for a very reasonable price ($15, or $12 with your student ID). Inday’s,1043 W. 5. BETWEEN TWO SLICES OF BREAD. When it comes to sandwiches, there are plenty of options in Chico. Downtown alone, there are four or five spots known for their sandwiches. But none of them do it quite like Spiteri’s Delicatessen. It’s one of Chico’s best-kept secrets, tucked away in a very old strip mall on the north side of town. A half sandwich is $4 and a whole is $6.99. The deli case contains all kinds of

GOIN’ CHICO 2017 • C h i c o N e w s & R e v i e w

other goodies, too, like pasta salads, marinated mushrooms and bacon mac and cheese. Don’t miss out on this place. 971 East Ave., spiterisdeli.com

6. WITH A CHEESE SKIRT. If you go to only one burger joint while you’re in Chico, you can hardly do better than Nobby’s, home of the cheese skirt. The burgers ($6.05 with the cheese, $4.95 without) are big, juicy and cooked to order. The fries are consistently fresh and crispy. And did we mention the cheese skirt? Melting out and over the sides and crisped on the grill in a ring of deliciousness. It’s a small place, so consider going at an off hour or taking your food to go. 1444 Park Ave.

FOUR PLACES IN BIDWELL PARK THAT NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT by

Howard Hardee h owa rd h @new srev i ew. c o m

Y Upper Park caves

ou really want to know Bidwell Park? Maybe your friends have told you to dip a toe in Sycamore Pool and Bear Hole, check out Chico Creek Nature Center, climb Monkey Face, hike the creekside Yahi Trail and throw discs at Peregrine Point. But there’s more to the park than those (totally worthwhile) hotspots. The park is huge— 3,670 acres, nearly 11 miles long—and some of its lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path features offer more secluded experiences. Below are four places in Bidwell Park where people generally are not.

SECRET CAVES Psst. Hey—up here, in these caves you totally don’t know about yet. They’re just past the trailhead off Centennial Avenue that leads to Annie Bidwell and South Rim trails. Walk along Big Chico Creek and the short cement wall on your left until you see a trail up a steep hill on the right. The caves are just below the edge of the canyon. The view of Bidwell Golf Course and North Rim on the other side of the canyon is admirable. If you let your imagination run amok, you can picture the small caves as they were long ago, before the area was settled. But based on the candy wrappers and empty bottles of cheap vodka one often finds here, it’s easier to imagine high school kids up to no good.

Big Chico Creek Canyon is well-known for the lovejoy basalt formations that characterize areas like Bear Hole and Salmon Hole. If you’re hiking or biking on Upper Park Road, stop at Parking Lot Q and check out an even more distinct rock outcropping known as the Devil’s Kitchen. The basalt cliffs and spires are popular with rock climbers, but totally accessible to non-extreme folks as well. If you squeeze through a tight passage between the rocks, you’re rewarded with access to an ultrasecluded sandy beach along Big Chico Creek. But beware: Nudists have been known to frequent this area—naked.

SALMON LADDER

Ever heard of the Iron Canyon Fish Ladder? It’s kind of like the series of steps near the bridge at Sycamore Pool in Lower Park, except way bigger, more rugged, and located in Upper Park. Thing is, the ladder sits on a remote section of Big Chico Creek between Salmon Hole and Brown’s Hole, and it’s kind of a pain to get there. You can see the concrete structure from the Yahi Trail if you know where to peer over the edge of the canyon, but there’s no access unless you own rockclimbing gear or you are a mountain goat. Assuming you aren’t equipped with ropes or nimble hooves, your best bet is starting at Salmon Hole (Parking Lot N on Upper Park Road) and slogging upstream over slippery rocks, or fighting your way through bankside bushes and getting slapped in the face with twigs and leaves for 10 or 15 minutes. Either way, resign yourself to getting scraped and bruised. It’s pretty cool once you get there, though. The quarter-mile-long ladder, made up of a series of staggered concrete pools, or “weirs,” has deteriorated substantially since its construction in 1958, making it a difficult passage for fish, but it’s still a worthwhile destination for people. In fact, it’s one of the most picturesque parts of Upper Park.

REDWOOD GROVE There’s an easily accessible gem hardly anybody seems to stop and appreciate just off Peterson Memorial Way, the main paved road that runs through Lower Bidwell Park (on the north side of the creek): a grove of a dozen-or-so redwood trees planted by Chico pioneer John Bidwell. If you’re on a run or a bike ride, this cathedral of giants is a good place to stop for a water break and stretch. While you’re there, take in the sunlight slanting through the branches and the fallen needles underfoot. It’s also worth reflecting on the fact that you don’t need to drive to Humboldt to bask in the presence of coastal redwoods, because there’s a handful of them in our collective backyard. ●

HALF A DOZEN REASONS TO STAY UP LATE (THAT DON’T INCLUDE A FRAT PARTY) by

Meredith J. Cooper meredithc@newsreview.com

S

o you want to stay up after the sun goes down, but you’re under 21 and therefore can’t hit the bars. No problem. Of course, there are frat parties and other fun to be had at student pads near the Chico State campus, but believe us, that gets old fast. (And, if you spend all your time drinking, you probably won’t ace all your classes like you told Mom and Dad you would.) The good thing is, there’s plenty of non-drinking to be had. 1. Take in a Late Show Whether you’re a movie buff or not, this is a must-do while you’re in Chico. Head over to The Pageant, Chico’s art-house movie theater, at 10 p.m. on a Saturday and fork over a few bucks for a Late Night flick you’ve likely never seen on a big screen before. 351 E. Sixth St. www.pageant chico.com

2. Feed your face hole So, you may not be old enough to crawl the local bars. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get out of the house for some late night good eats! A handful of restaurants are open till 3 a.m. on weekends to satisfy those munchies (while there, enjoy some prime peoplewatching, too). Some faves: Burgers and Brew (301 Broadway); Aca Taco on Nord (in the Safeway

shopping center); Main Street Pizza (331 Main St.); Serrano’s Mexican Grill (645 W. Fifth St.).

3. Escape—or try to, at least Get a group together, head over to Chico Escape Rooms and enter a fantasy world that you need to, you know, escape from. The experience requires some basic sleuthing skills,

4. Have a slice of punk-rock pizza

6. Night swim

If you’re into punk music, then you must check out Monstros Pizza. Sounds random, and it is. But for all-ages crowds into punk, metal and indie in Chico, Monstros is where it’s at. The food is good. The music is loud. And there are wood chips all over the floor, which is a clue that things might get messy. 628 W. Sacramento Ave. www. facebook.com/chicoareapunks

When it’s warm and dark out, there’s nothing quite like stripping down to your skivvies (or less) and taking a dip in Sycamore Pool (at One-Mile Recreation Area in Lower Bidwell Park). Just watch out for sketchy park rats while you’re there—travel in a group and keep an eye on your belongings. Keep it fun and safe out there. l

5. Look at the sky ... look at it! Picture this: You and a date, in Upper Bidwell Park after dark … star-gazing. Seriously, though, pick a clear, preferably moonless weekend night and head out to the Chico Community Observatory in Upper Bidwell Park. Then sit back in the openair planetarium and take in the beauty that is the cosmos. If you show up before 10:45 p.m., you can go inside and get an actual magnified view of the night sky by peering through one of the observatory’s telescopes. www.facebook.com/ ChicoCommunityObservatory
