Why I love completely dominating at shower games

’m not big into sports, but there is one thing that gets my competitive drive going: shower games.

There’s nothing I love more than a purse scavenger hunt at a bridal shower, or a celebrity baby face matching game at a baby shower.

During my late-20s and early 30s, I was completely dominating at shower games. This period also coincided with all of my friends either getting married or having kids, so I had ample opportunities to hone my skills.

Now I can come up with a baby-related word for every letter in the alphabet (Q is for quintuplets! U is for umbilical cord!). Name five movies that have “wedding” in the title?

I got that, easy: My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Wedding Planner, The Wedding Singer, American Wedding, Wedding Crashers.

Why am I so competitive? Why do I feel such satisfaction at plucking the last clothespin from the lapel of a woman who just uttered the forbidden word: “baby”? Why do I get so bossy when leading a group of women to create the best toilet paper wedding gown? Because it’s good being on top, that’s why!

During the height of my party-game career, I had an amazing winning streak of, like, six showers! Maybe seven? I don’t actually remember (someone check the record books).

Bragging rights are nice, but sometimes the prizes motivate me. I still have bottles of perfume and a set of mixing bowls that I admire as the trophies of my accomplishments.

While the true purpose of the event is to “shower” the special bride- or mom-to-be with gifts and attention, shower games give the rest of us a chance to duke it out for a little sprinkle of glory!

My favorite shower games: Blindfold diaper — Time your guests to see who can put a diaper on a babydoll the fastest.

Clothespin game – Things can get really competitive with this one. I’ve been known to trick guests into saying the forbidden word.

Trivia – I love some pop culture trivia re: wedding movies or songs with baby in the title.

Personalized Quiz – It’s fun learning more about the bride and groom with a quiz.

Guess the baby food – Slightly more appetizing than the melted candy in a diaper game.

Love a good mystery? Nikki Evenson, owner of Chico Escape Rooms, describes escape rooms as the perfect way to bond with family members of all ages. She started her own escape room business after visiting one while on vacation with family.

“When I saw my 16-year-old son put down his phone and engage with the rest of us, it was wonderful,” she says. “Amazing things happen while people are in these rooms.”

Evenson has two rooms, Aunt Edna’s Condo and Baker Street Mystery. She hosts groups of eight people who are given clues that (hopefully) lead to them exiting the room

within 60 minutes. Many people come to celebrate events like birthdays, anniversaries and bachelor parties.

“Escape rooms are also great for business team-building,” Evenson says. “It helps boost morale and gives coworkers the opportunity to bond while engaging in problem-solving.”

If you “jump” at the chance to have a good time, check out Rare Air Trampoline Park, which offers fitness and fun for all ages. COO Ronnie Thomas says the trampoline park is a great place to engage people of all ages and get the kids to ditch those devices.

“While in the park, everyone is active and having fun, including parents and even grandparents,” says Thomas.

People can just come to have fun or they can book a party. In addition, a lot of corporations rent out the facility for teambuilding.

“The adults like to play dodgeball and have friendly competitions on the battle beams where they try to knock each other off with jousting sticks,” he says. “Anyone, no matter their fitness level, can have fun at the park. If you can walk, you can jump.”

For those who want a more tranquil party environment, Jamie Zeff Fine Art offers painting parties for groups of 10 to 45 people. Small groups can attend open events, or people can book a private party.

“The events can be customized,” says Owner Jamie Zeff. “People can rent out our venue or I can come to them and host a party in their home.”

Zeff says one of the most popular parties are “Paint Your Pet” parties. Participants send her a photo of their pet, which Zeff transfers to a paintby-numbers-style canvas for them to paint during the party.

inday’s restaurant (filipino) Inday’s Restaurant is a labor of love for Ethel and John Geiger. Ethel is a native of the Philippines, and when she came to the U.S. in 1997, she missed the foods of her home country.

So she did what the ingenious do — bring it right on over!

What started as a food truck has expanded to a restaurant that interprets the foods of the Philippines with creativity.

Ethel’s husband John says, “We’re actually trying to create our own fusion, Americanized style of Filipino food.”

Their famous Kamayan Dinners are the ultimate experience. Whether at their restaurant or the location of your next event, they’ll cover the table in banana leaves and

serve food directly on them, as would be done back in the Philippines. And just as Ethel and other fellow Filipinos would do, you’ll eat with your hands — no utensils.

Kahuna brothers shave Ice (Hawaiian) With flavors straight from the Hawaiian islands, Kahuna Brothers Shave Ice keeps things cool on hot Chico days.

These aren’t snow cones — Kahuna Brothers makes shave (not “shaved”) ice.

“We actually make our own ice,” says Owner Rich Faringer, Jr. “We make solid 12-pound blocks of ice, so that way it’s completely fluffy like traditional shave ice is. Also, we handmake our own syrups.”

He knows what he’s talking about, because the crowd goes wild for these flavors. Sure, there are standard flavors like cherry, blue raspberry and cotton candy, but also authentic flavors like mango, passion fruit and guava.

Then there’s The Big Kahuna: a shave ice and vanilla ice cream concoction surrounded by passion fruit, orange and guava syrup that is topped with a “snow cap” of sweetened condensed milk. “It also has chunks of pineapple inside, around the ice cream,” Faringer adds. “That’s our signature item.”

Kids love The Zombie (blue raspberry, grape and tiger’s blood) and The Unicorn (blue raspberry, grape and pink lemonade with sugar crystals on top for “unicorn dust”).

You want a shave ice shindig? Rich says Kahuna Brothers Shave Ice can deliver: “We have a flavor that everyone is going to enjoy.”

Sicilian Cafe (Italian) Sicilian Cafe has been a true family affair for decades.

Chef and owner James Taylor (who cooks at least as well as the other guy sings) is part of a tradition. “My grandparents immigrated to the United States in 1950 and they started their own restaurant in 1960. And from that point on, somebody in the family has always had a restaurant going,” he says. “We are still utilizing the same recipes and traditions they did in the ’60s. Our sauce is still the same.”

Other original recipes include Calamari Originale, a recipe handed down from his grandparents. “People are used to floured rings, but this is a filet of the squid itself,” Taylor says. “Wonderful.”

While tradition is king, Sicilian Cafe is happy to accommodate special requests, including offering gluten-free pastas. They also bring the Italian flavors to you with a catering menu that strives for the same quality you expect from the sit-down dining experience at a very reasonable price.

“We try to do a consistent product. From when you had it here, you should have it at your catering that way as well,” Taylor says. “We stand behind what we do.”

OM Foods (Vegan/Organic) Foodies who desire to stick to organic and vegan choices are in luck. OM Foods of Chico has some exotic flavors — with a conscience.

“Usually people come here and (tell us) how good they feel and how excited they are about finding my restaurant!” says Owner and Chef Amanda Bosschart. “I do source from local farmers. I do seasonal produce, we make our salsas fresh every day. The organic thing is pretty big, and the vegan thing is really important to this town.”

But that doesn’t mean patrons sacrifice on some of the food experiences they crave.

For instance, their most popular item, Vegan Nachos, feature a unique homemade cashew “cheese” sauce!

Just a sampling of their menu of incredible delights: fish tacos, a tempeh burger piled high with beets, carrots and vegan barbecue sauce, and strawberry mango smoothies. You also get a promise: “Everything we serve, if there’s avocado on it, you get half an avocado with your meal!” Bosschart says.

Four-Legged Animals are welcome at these shin-digs

F

rom petting zoos to “yappy hour,” Chico has many unique party options for animal lovers and their pets.

Canine Connection gives kids and adults the opportunity to celebrate important life events with their pets. For example, kids can have a dog-themed birthday party with their family pet and invite their friends to bring their own dogs as well.

“We offer a place to celebrate the humananimal bond,” says owner Sarah Richardson.

“People can have their dogs with them as they celebrate things like birthdays, but they can host a birthday party for the dog.”

Canine Connection also hosts other events to honor a family pet. Some people have parties to celebrate a dog’s achievement, such as becoming a therapy animal. Another common event is a celebration of life party for older dogs in their final days.

“It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the dog’s life by bringing all of the dog’s favorite people, as well as other dogs, together to honor the dog,” says Richardson.

Canine Connection also hosts litter-mate reunion parties and a special weekly event called Yappy Hour. This event offers an environment for puppies to interact and play with other dogs once per week.

Another option for animal lovers is the Two By Two Ranch and Petting Zoo, a two-and-a-half-acre domestic farm offering tours by appointment and parties. The site has pony rides, picnic tables and a plethora of animals including guinea pigs, tortoises, mini pigs, miniature horses and emus.

“All of our animals are unique,” says Owner Tina Cardin. “Even standard residents like chickens are more exotic than the typical chickens people see.”

Two By Two also offers mobile parties with a mini-zoo where kids can interact with animals in pens. They can also bring their pony, Trixi, for kids to ride and have fun with by brushing and decorating her hair with clips. Another option is an on-site walkthrough zoo for large events like company lunches and customer appreciation days.
