MeMory froM a local

Randall Stone, Mayor - City of Chico By Thea Marie Rood

What is your favorite holiday memory?

Every holiday my mother and her sisters would come to make tamales for all of us and each other – 10 people all day cooking in the house and incredible homemade tamales for weeks. In my later years, these were highly coveted in Chico. It was fun to eavesdrop on the conversations because my mother and her sisters would vacillate between English and Spanish and they often did not realize how open their conversations were to us youngsters. This is really how our family stories continue to be told: around food, family and friends.

What is a favorite tradition you do now?

Our family tradition is home-cooking a feast served on our family fine china, followed by the inevitable food coma, and a provocative movie to discuss once we are awake. Food, family, friends who are family, and lots of disagreement – a Stone Family tradition.

What is your favorite holiday movie and why?

“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around.” Obviously, I am referencing “Love Actually.” Sometimes we all need reminders on what love we’ve got to give and how to receive it. I know this holiday, this is more important than ever.

Serving Chico at Two Locations!

178 East 7th Street (530) 342-7163 | Chico Mall (530) 809-4151

What is your favorite holiday song and why?

“Hallelujah,’ Jeff Buckley (written by Leonard Cohen). “Love is not a victory march, it’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah.”

Rediscover a Shopping Tradition Skip the hectic box stores — and buy from locally owned shops instead By Thea Marie Rood

S

hopping local has good economic results: Money stays in our community and helps maintain Chico’s vibrant local business district. But it’s also fun and — best of all — guarantees one-of-a-kind gifts.

Distinctive FinDs BaT Comics & Games

Whether you have someone on your list who needs a metal Star Trek lunchbox, a Superman button, a Silver Age Batman’s Detective comic book or The Lego Movie on DVD, this 2,500-square-foot store is the place to find it. You can also pick up Pokeman cards, board games like Settlers of Cataan, TY Beanies and a glow-in-thedark vinyl Godzilla.

Bird in Hand

In business for more than 35 years, Bird in Hand is where you can knock out your entire gift list in an afternoon. Pick up a balsam and cedar candle for Aunt Katherine, an Edward Hopper wall calendar for your college art major, the dress-up board game Pretty, Pretty Princess for your 8-year-old niece, a 5000-piece Ravensburger Sistine Chapel puzzle for Nana, and a YoyoFactory BOOST for your hard-to-buy-for husband. You can also stock up on holiday essentials: boxed cards, ornaments and stockings. While at Bird in Hand, check out Michele Shover’s “California Standoff: Miners, Indians and Farmers at War, 1850-1865,” her acclaimed book about the 15-year territorial war between Maidu bands and Butte County settlers. It’s a must-read for local history buffs.

Handcrafted

for tHe collector

Shubert’s Ice Cream and Candy

Nothing beats that iconic brown, pink and white Shubert’s Homemade Candy box, filled with seasonal favorites like pumpkin, maple and orange creams. The family-owned business, which opened in 1938, also sells gift baskets filled with those chocolate boxes, as well as goodies like caramel topping and English toffee. And to sweeten your holiday parties, arrange for Shubert’s ice cream catering or an elegant candy buffet.

Maisie Jane’s

Also a family-run enterprise for several generations, Maisie Jane Hurtado, her husband Isidro, and their three daughters continue to farm almonds, just like her grandfather and father did (as Bertagna Orchards). Today, Maisie Jane’s California Sunshine produces flavored nut assortments, chocolate-covered almonds and locally sourced, themed gift baskets. A particular favorite this time of year: A Cozy Winter Dinner, with soup mix, flatbread bites, TJ Farms kiwi pepper jam and Maisie Jane’s cinnamon, dark chocolate and tamari almonds.

Sally Dimas Art Gallery & Studio

A special piece of art can be an unforgettable holiday gift: a beach scene for an ocean lover, a favorite animal for a child’s bedroom, a restful vista for your wife’s busy office. Chico has a locally owned gallery, begun by Sally Dimas with watercolors and acrylic paintings, but expanded to include oil, pastels, wood, jewelry, glass and pottery — all created by local artists. You can browse the gallery during business hours or by appointment.

Eighth & Main Antique Center

Where can you find, say, a vintage silver pin brooch, a Mission oak footstool, an enameled amber dresser box or a set of Frank Whiting cocktail forks? Eighth & Main is one of the largest antique malls in the west (at 30,000 square feet) and includes more than 100 vendors. Delight your family and friends this year with rare and interesting furniture, books, art, jewelry, dishes, sterling silver, records and toys.

fasHionistas Birkenstock of Chico and Paradise

Want to literally knock their socks off this holiday season? Think comfortable, well-fitting footwear. Celeste Baker bought this business from her parents in 1999, and today offers more than 30 high-quality brands of shoes that her staff will fit perfectly to each customer. In fact, clever gift idea: join the Baker’s Dozen club, buy everyone on your list a pair of shoes — and grab that free 13th pair for yourself. (Also kudos to Ms. Baker and her staff for re-opening the Fir Street store in Paradise last month, just one year after losing it.)

Show Love Thrift

Those trendy millennials and Gen-Z’s in your family are all about unique fashion finds. Their favorite shopping? Treasure hunting at local thrift stores. Show Love Thrift is an especially good choice for these eclectic dressers because this locally owned store also gives back to the Chico community (after the fire last year, for example, they helped Paradise evacuees with basic necessities). In addition to clothes, find holiday decorations, furniture, toys and books, with regular 50% off sales.

Smart Parking. Better Access. Downtown Chico Business Association reminds us parking is easier, faster and more welcoming downtown with new, smart-parking technology. Parking meter funds also go right to the beautification of Downtown Chico.

now someone who already has everything? Give them something fun to do! Tickets, memberships and events are priceless memories in the making. There’s nothing more luxurious than being pampered at a spa. Send them to Sweetwater Day Spa (40 Declaration Drive, Ste. 100, Chico), where they can enjoy facials (which include a mini neck and shoulder massage), seaweed body wraps, couples massage and airbrush tanning to keep your summer glow throughout the winter. Challenge beer fans to brew their own suds. Chico Home Brew Shop (3130 Highway 32, Ste. #2, Chico) has supplies, kits, recipes and advice for beginners as well as those who already know what they’re doing. If they enjoy drinking — but not brewing — beer, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. offers tours (1075 East 20th St., Chico). Give them a peek behind the scenes … and beer tastings. If they’re a bonafide Beer Geek, this is

the way to go. Did we mention there’d be beer? Give them the opportunity to get their hands dirty with something from Fair Street Nursery (2255 Fair St., Chico). Whether they already grow their own kale or a potted plant for the office seems more their style, give them locally handcrafted pottery and a gift certificate to pick out their own plant and watch it bloom. The gift of learning can be fun too. Expose them to the arts with Chico Performances tickets (CSU Chico’s Laxson Auditorium) for musical and theater performances. Choose from familyfriendly shows like “A Very Chico Nutcracker,” concerts, comedy and more. Gateway Science Museum memberships (625 Esplanade, Chico) are gifts that keep on giving all year long. For just $25 (students and seniors) to $60 (family), they’ll enjoy unlimited free general admission to see permanent and rotating exhibits of ice age fossils, NASA missions, hands-on activities and lots of learning.

innamon, pine, roses; taste and scent trigger all sorts of holiday memories. Farm-fresh products also add a sense of place to gift giving. Amid so much California-grown abundance, there are so many possibilities. For example, Butte View Olive Company (2950 Louis Ave., Oroville; 530-534-8320) – a stop on the Sierra Oro Farm Trail – makes its flavored and extra virgin oil from California Mission olives produced on its family-owned ranch. Another excellent choice for oil lovers is California Olive Ranch (1367 E. Lassen Ave., Chico; 530-846-8000), the nation’s largest producer of extra virgin olive oil. This award-winning oil maker has helped make Chico an olive oil powerhouse. Mooney Farms (1220 Fortress St., Chico; 530-8992661) is famous for its Bella Sun Luci sun-dried tomatoes, packed in olive oil with herbs. Its family-owned facility features 200-year-old olives trees amid rows of rosemary and lavender. Looking for fresh fruit and vegetables for your holiday feast? Or citrus, nuts and seasonal treats for gift giving? The Chico Certified Farmers Market offers locally grown goodness year round. Say cheese! Preserve your memories By Anne Stokes

T

he holidays are one of the few times a year when everyone is in the same place at the same time, i.e., the perfect time for family photos. Here are a few tips to look your best: Hire a professional. Many photographers offer holiday mini sessions at reasonable prices. Plus a pro will know how to make you look good and can help wrangle kids at the same time (which, frankly, is priceless). If you want something different than a standard studio photo shoot, take advantage of Butte County’s natural beauty and use one of Paradise Recreation & Park District’s picturesque facilities as a backdrop. The hours just after sunrise and right before sunset are called “golden hours” for a good reason — natural light is at its softest and most flattering. If you’re working with young children, make sure they’re well rested and pack snacks. No one wants a hangry family photo. When choosing outfits, think “timeless,” not “trendy.” Dress in simple, classic styles and coordinate colors, not outfits (unless ugly holiday sweaters are your family’s thing). Head to Anika Burke Eclectic Boutique (211 Main St.) or Diamond W Western Wear (181 E 2nd St.) for new duds. Have fun! While they can seem stressful in the moment, the ultimate goal of a family portrait is to showcase your family’s love. Let kids be goofy. Kiss your spouse and hold their hand. Consider including your family’s beloved (and well-behaved) pet. Relax and enjoy the moment — it will show in your photos. Don’t hide photos in an album, hang them on your walls and enjoy! Chico Paper Company (345 Broadway St.) does custom framing that not only shows off your photos, but protects them from light, dust, moisture and heat to keep prints looking beautiful for years to come.

A Special Advertising Supplement to Chico News & Review

It was a few days before Christmas when my parents decided to go out to dinner, leaving my two older brothers and me home to entertain ourselves. After we ate our dinner (I think it was canned spaghetti), we started challenging each other to cartwheels in the living room, which was very small. It wasn’t long before one us cartwheeled into the Christmas tree and it crashed to the floor, spewing decorations everywhere. Thank goodness it landed on carpet without causing a fire. We looked at each other with great surprise, then scrambled to right the tree. It stood a little more crooked than before with tinsel and ornaments hanging in chaos from its branches. My parents never knew, or if they did, they never said a word. My brothers and I laugh hard still whenever we tell this story. Eventually, our parents laughed too.

What is your favorite holiday memory?

Amanda Leveroni: Making Danish Christmas cookies with my mother. I remember it took hours and the dough was very hard to work with. Klejner are little fried Danish twists. They get dusted in powdered sugar and are a really special treat. My mom and I made this every year with my big sister when I was growing up. Both of these women are not with us now, so it’s a special one for me. Erika Montanez: Making buñuelos with my grandmother every year for Christmas was the highlight for me. Now I get to teach my kids how to make them and they sure love to eat them.

What new memories or traditions are you creating now with your family and friends? Leveroni: I’m looking forward to creating these! Stepping away from the catering company is going to give me holiday time at home like I never had before. I’ll have to get back to you on that. Montanez: The day after Thanksgiving we go and pick our Christmas tree. My husband and I set up the tree and put on the lights and the kids put on all the ornaments. We take a picture of them while they are decorating the tree and use it for our Christmas cards.

What is your favorite holiday movie?

Leveroni: I’d say it’s a toss up between “Love Actually” and “Elf.” We watch them both every year. Montanez: With 5-year-old twins, we do more singing than watching movies. One of their favorites is “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

For several Christmases, we would go up into the mountains outside Denver to cut down a Christmas tree, then we’d bring it back home and spend the evening and next day decorating it and the house. Decorating the Christmas tree as a family with eggnog and one of the classic Christmas movies playing.

What is your favorite holiday movie?

I have two: “A Christmas Carol” (the 1938, 1951 and 1984 versions) and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (both the cartoon and the Jim Carrey version). I love both of these stories because of the redemptive message – that is, people are essentially good and most anyone can change for the better. I particularly love the older versions of “A Christmas Carol,” as they have stood the test of time and seem to get better with age and are really well-acted.

These are my favorite Christmas songs, because they are all so beautiful and when performed by a choir are moving and seemingly celestial: “Carol of the Bells,” “We Three Kings” and “The First Noel.”
