alifornia has long been america’s golden door. Tempest-tossed waves of immigrants from across the globe have become the cornerstone of our state’s economy and cultural identity. Today, the millions of immigrants who call california home — including 4.3 million from mexico — have brought their rich cultures with them, leaving an indelible influence on our community. at midtown’s cantina alley, owners max archuleta and art aguilar have built on that legacy. “We want to showcase all that is mexico,” says archuleta. “Whether it’s the food, art, culture, [or] the music,

we really want to showcase a little bit of everything.” midtown’s cantina alley features a small but authentic menu of tapastyle dishes, including Baja fish tacos, pozole verde and elote — corn smothered in mayo cream with cheese and spices, a perennial street food favorite. aguilar plans to change the menu every few months to feature food from different regions of mexico. diners can also get a taste of mexico’s emerging craft beer scene with five drafts and 15 different bottled beers, including agua mala and Wendlandt out of ensenada, Border Psycho out of Tijuana and Fauna out of mexicali.

“We want people to feel like they might be, if they didn’t know any better, in Mexico.” max Archuleta co-owner, midtown’s cantina Alley

“We want people to feel like they might be, if they didn’t know any better, in mexico,” says archuleta. “if you want to pay your bill in pesos, we’ll take them.” aguilar, who was raised in Guanajuato, mexico, wants to share the beauty of his native land with Sacramento through his restaurant. “We want to showcase the beautiful parts of mexico, the good things of mexico,” he says. “There are a lot of negative things that have been written or seen in the news over the last three or four years, so maybe this will give people a little [perspective] and see the other side of mexico.”

midtown’s cantina alley will have its grand opening Saturday, may 6, from noon to close. celebrate mexican culture with live music, food, drinks, art and artisan jewelry vendors. it’s aguilar and archuleta’s hope that every guest will be transported down south, even just for a little while. discover midtown’s cantina alley at 2320 Jazz alley, Sacramento.
