During my peace-time Army stint, I was a field artillery forward observer. When calling in a full volley from 8-inch howitzers, you could sometimes feel the ground rumble 15 miles away. There was a sense of immense influence in guiding the damage those guns inflicted, like Zeus himself casting fury upon a trembling planet. My stomach sinks to consider the power our president now drinks so deeply in his regal winter palace, sentencing distant humans to death while sharing exquisite chocolate cake meant for royal palates. Such heady nectar would make a tempting habit, even to more disciplined souls, but with a man of such marginal restraint as President Trump, further intoxication can only escalate the oafish and volatile destruction he spews on anything that doesn’t muster juicy profit or rim his brimming ego. The twisted offspring of greed, fear, hatred and power are hideous to behold, but might yet still be forestalled by advancing a value most already cherish, equality or equity. If we get very serious about reducing inequality right away and begin on the edge, where need is most urgent, then maybe there’s still time to chart a path beyond this descending spiral of greed.

Lest we have another Clinton/ Sanders in-fight, Dems might want to open their minds to all candidates running for governor in 2018. Delaine Eastin will be in Chico on April 29, 1-2:30 p.m., at the Chico branch of Butte County Library to introduce herself and take questions. In a recent SF Chronicle article, Eastin wasn’t even mentioned, despite serving four terms in the Assembly and being an outstanding (only female to date) state superintendent of public instruction under both Democrat and Republican governors. Eastin defines herself as a “champion of education,” “defender of the environment” and “warrior for civil rights.” Top-down party politics doesn’t work for me and it doesn’t work for her. She’s running a progressive “for the people, by the people” campaign and walks the talk of Main Street (vs. Wall Street). I believe her appeal will reach moderate Republicans in the North State who are tired of being ignored by Sacramento. Eastin is a hardworking, “get it done” person whose motto is “Together, we can do better.” I would be proud to have her be California’s first woman governor. I hope community leaders of all political stripes will come with open minds and wallets.

On April 25, the Butte County Board of Supervisors will consider [ending winter staffing at] many rural fire stations. This should be unacceptable to everyone who lives in Butte County. For those of us who live in the foothills, a local fire station is crucial. Without one, homeowners insurance would skyrocket, if available at all. Response time to fires and emergency calls is invaluable. For those who live in Chico or Oroville, imagine a relative in a car accident where the first responders are 40 minutes away. If you don’t get involved, our rural fire stations will disappear. Call or email your supervisor. Come to the meeting on April 25. We need to let them know that we expect our tax dollars to go to fire protection and public safety. Mike Stewart Bangor

Fewer guns, not more It has been one month since Desmond Phillips was killed by Chico police. Desmond suffered from PTSD after being beaten by Sacramento police officers for being unresponsive. Chico police knew Desmond had PTSD and mental health struggles. Both officers were rookies. Desmond needed mental health resources. Police broke down his door, tased Desmond, then shot at him 16 times. The narrative presented by District Attorney Mike Ramsey has changed multiple times between public reports he has made. And now he has ruled Desmond’s death “justified.” A Butte County sheriff’s captain has accused Ramsey and Chico PD Chief Mike O’Brien of “propaganda” regarding this incident,

including misrepresenting the training the officers had completed. Now the City Council is talking about arming our park rangers with guns. In Britain, Ireland, Norway, Iceland and New Zealand, officers are unarmed when they are on patrol. Police officers there have saved lives—exactly because they were unable to shoot. Our city is going in the wrong direction. We need fewer guns and more de-escalation and nondeadly force training. Rain Scher  Chico

Rangers, not cops I am against the plan to have Bidwell Park rangers carry guns and become sworn enforcement officers. The city had hoped to quietly implement this major change without a chance for the public to comment on it. Fortunately, Park Commissioner Elaina McReynolds found out about this and brought it to light at a City Council meeting. The problem goes beyond arming rangers. Patrolling the park seems to be a low priority for the Chico Police Department. I can see a time when these new “cops” will be pulled away from the park to help police in other parts of town. Park rangers protect the park’s natural values, serve as a constant official presence, answer visitors’ questions, and explain regulations. Police enforce the law and, when necessary, arrest lawbreakers. The rangers’ duties must remain as they are. The police department needs to have at least one officer patrolling the park at all times. Everybody professes to love Bidwell Park, yet it has fallen into neglect and its natural values are threatened. This is mainly due to city policies that have stripped the park of necessary staffing. Concerned citizens need to attend City Council and Park Commission meetings to raise their voices about the proposal to turn rangers into cops, and about policies that are damaging Bidwell Park. many of the songs with Bay Area musician and studio wiz Kelley Stoltz, and had members of The National and Broken Social Scene join him on the sessions. It’s his most tuneful album, and also his most candid lyrically. He wrote “The Unconditional” about his daughter, which shows an emotionally earnest bent rarely heard in any of his earlier, more abstract work. “On the Preston School of Industry records and my Pavement stuff, it was more about fitting words together with a melody and trying to be more mysterious. I don’t need to be like that anymore.” In recent years, Kannberg also delved into music from artists he never imagined he’d enjoy—including Aussie legend Paul Kelly and, most notably, Steely Dan, the latter of whom he says he couldn’t stand until hearing Countdown to Ecstasy, an album put out in 1973. Now he can hear similarities with a certain other band. “Steely Dan actually has a lot in common with Pavement—not the music per se, but the way they sing and what they sing about,” Kannberg said with a laugh. “I’m sure Steve [Malkmus] got that before I got that.” Kannberg recently had a brush with Pavement—not his old bandmates, but with his old records—as he ranked the

band’s five studio releases for a feature in Noisey. Needless to say, longtime Pavement fans had plenty to say. “They were pretty offended by my list,” he said. “Some loved it, but there were some people that were, ‘Whoa, what are you talking about?’ That’s what’s so great about those records— they’re so different, and they affect people in different ways.” While Malkmus wrote the majority of tunes for Pavement, Kannberg’s contributions such as “Date With IKEA” and “Kennel District” remain warm and fuzzy gems in the band’s canon. He says those early songs, as well as the ramshackle approach to recording, are indicative of growing up in the hot, flat central valley town of Stockton. New environments, children and middle age have all played parts in Kannberg’s growth as a songwriter. And while he still doesn’t consider himself prolific, he says he recorded almost 30 songs for Doris and the Daggers, some of which will make their way to a forthcoming release. One thing’s for sure: He won’t wait another eight years before putting out a new record. “I’m pretty confident now, and I’ve been writing a bunch of songs,” Kannberg said. “I kinda want to just keep doing it now that I’m on a roll.” □

Get back in the car Furious franchise lifts its foot off the gas

W pidly titled installment in the Furious franchise (yes, even more stupid than Tokyo Drift)—you get

ith The Fate of the Furious—easily the most stu-

to see the single most disgusting, stomach-churning, horrifying moment in cinema so by far this year. That would be when Bob Grimm Charlize Theron plants a big, sloppy kiss on Vin Diesel, the visual bg rimm@ newsrev iew.c om of which being some kind of “Girl From the Film Monster Meets the Michelin Man” nightmare. Some five years ago, I made up a list of five things I never wanted to see, and that came in at No. 3, right The Fate of under “Donald Trump as President” the Furious and “Spiders in My Scrambled Starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Eggs Being Served to Me by a Man ludacris, Charlize With Weeping Hand Sores.” Theron, Jason Somewhere along the way, the Statham and Michelle Furious franchise went completely rodriguez. Directed by F. Gary Gray. Cinemark bonkers and became less about 14, Feather river cars racing around and more about Cinemas and paradise dudes who think hair on the top of Cinema 7. rated pG-13. their heads is total bullshit and that upper arms should be the size of a bull’s torso. It also went off on some sort of international spy team tangent—something that actually worked to a hilarious degree in Furious 7. But with The Fate of the Furious, the franchise trajectory becomes ridiculous without much fun. It’s just dumb and plodding. The big thing here is that Dominic Toretto (Diesel) has gone rogue and turned on his family, which has something to do with a cyber villain named Cipher (Theron) and her crazy dreadlock extensions. The film opens with Dominic and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) having a good old time in Cuba. Dominic gets into a car race that involves his vehicle catching

fire and him speaking in a growling, marble-mouthed manner. Post race, he’s approached by Cipher wearing a stunning dress-down outfit involving denim shorts. Dominic takes a look at something on her cellphone, mumbles and groans a bit, and the international intrigue begins. Turns out, Cipher is after nuclear launch codes and electro-magnetic pulse contraptions, and Dominic becomes her pit bull. Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard (Jason Statham) are eventually employed by Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) to go get Dominic and see what’s going on in that big Barry Bonds-size head of his. Let it be noted that the portions of the film that involve Johnson and Statham are good, good enough to inspire thought of a spinoff film where their characters join up and solve crimes while fighting Batman, Sylvester Stallone, Godzilla, etc. A very real chance at something like that apparently got squashed because Diesel screamed, “Mine, mine, mine, all mine!” and put the kibosh on it. The biggest problem is that things are taken a little too seriously this time out. Heavy doses of drama are ladled into a mix that includes Diesel having his “Denzel Washington in Glory Tear” moment wherein a single solitary tear rolls down the cheek while the actor does his best to remain stone-faced. And the whole premise of Dominic going rogue has zero dramatic tension for reasons I won’t give away, but I’ll just put it out there that there’s little mystery behind his “traitorous” actions. Also, and this goes without saying, he mopes a lot. The Furious franchise will go on, obviously. Hopefully, producer Diesel will remember what makes the whole thing occasionally fun and shift the emphasis from him squirting tears back to cars going “vroom, vroom!” and jumping between skyscrapers and over the Grand Canyon. □

Beauty and the Beast

Disney’s wonderful 1991 animated musical adaptation of the classic French fairy tale has become the latest film on Disney’s Live Redo of a Beloved Animated Movie assembly line. This one is a big-budget effort starring Emma Watson as the iconic Belle and Ewan McGregor as a CGI candelabra. Is it an enjoyable distraction? Yes, even if it is completely unnecessary. Hermione makes for a strong Belle, and Watson’s performance is what makes the film worthwhile. As the Prince/Beast, Dan Stevens gives a decent enough performance via motion capture, and the CGI creation blends in nicely with his totally human, organic cast member. The cast and crew labor to make musical numbers like “Gaston” and “Be Our Guest” pop with the creative energy of the animated version, but they don’t quite reach those heights. They are nicely rendered, for sure, but not on the masterpiece level of the original. Beauty and the Beast tastes good, yet is ultimately empty fluff. Cinemark 14 and Feather River Cinemas. Rated PG —B.G.

Going in Style

A total disaster remake of a bleak “old guys rob a bank wearing rubber noses” comedy from back in 1979 that starred George Burns and Art Carney. The update loses all the charm of that fun and slightly dark Burns vehicle, is super heavy on schmaltz, and asks a strong cast to basically embarrass themselves for 90-plus minutes. Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin replace Burns, Carney and Lee Strasberg in this version, and that setup probably looked pretty good on paper. Unfortunately, they handed the film to Zach Braff, the guy from Scrubs, to direct. Braff does so with all the subtlety and nuance of an M-80 going off in a candlelight yoga class. The comedic moments demand that you laugh, and you don’t. The touching moments grab you by the collar and scream “Cry for me!” and you don’t. The heist itself insists that it is clever while being rather rote and mundane. The movie is a real bummer … a blue paint bomb in a bag full of hundreds and fifties. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13 —B.G.

The Zookeeper’s Wife

A film based on the real-life events surrounding Polish zookeepers Antonina and Jan Zabinski, who saved hundreds of Jews from the Warsaw ghetto by hiding them at the zoo following the German invasion in 1939. Starring Jessica Chastain and Johan Jeldenbergh. Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13.

Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY For the week oF april 20, 2017 ARIES (March 21-April 19): After George

Washington was elected as the first President of the United States, he had to move from his home in Virginia to New York City, which at the time was the center of the American government. But there was a problem: He didn’t have enough cash on hand to pay for his long-distance relocation, so he was forced to scrape up a loan. Fortunately, he was resourceful and persistent in doing so. The money arrived in time for him to attend his own inauguration. I urge you to be like Washington in the coming weeks, Aries. Do whatever’s necessary to get the funds you need to finance your life’s next chapter.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Fantasize

about sipping pear nectar and listening to cello music and inhaling the aroma of musky amber and caressing velvet, cashmere and silk. Imagine how it would feel to be healed by inspiring memories and sweet awakenings and shimmering delights and delicious epiphanies. I expect experiences like these to be extra available in the coming weeks. But they won’t necessarily come to you freely and easily. You will have to expend effort to ensure they actually occur. So be alert for them. Seek them out. Track them down.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Contagion

may work in your favor, but it could also undermine you. On the one hand, your enthusiasm is likely to ripple out and inspire people whose help you could use. On the other hand, you might be more sensitive than usual to the obnoxious vibes of manipulators. But now that I’ve revealed this useful tip, let’s hope you will be able to maximize the positive kind of contagion and neutralize the negative. Here’s one suggestion that may help: Visualize yourself to be surrounded by a golden force field that projects your good ideas far and wide even as it prevents the disagreeable stuff from leaking in.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): A reader

named Kris X sent me a rebuke. “You’re not a guru or a shaman,” he sneered. “Your horoscopes are too filled with the slippery stench of poetry to be useful for spiritual seekers.” Here’s my response: “Thank you, sir! I don’t consider myself a guru or shaman, either. It’s not my mission to be an all-knowing authority who hands down foolproof advice. Rather, I’m an apprentice to the Muse of Curiosity. I like to wrestle with useful, beautiful paradoxes. My goal is to be a joyful rebel stirring up benevolent trouble, to be a cheerleader for the creative imagination.” So now I ask you, my fellow Cancerian: How do you avoid getting trapped in molds that people pressure you to fit inside? Are you skilled at being yourself even if that’s different from what’s expected of you? What are the soulful roles you choose to embody despite the fact that almost no one understands them? Now is a good time to meditate on these matters.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In the coming

weeks, there will be helpers whose actions will nudge you—sometimes inadvertently—toward a higher level of professionalism. You will find it natural to wield more power and you will be more effective in offering your unique gifts. Now maybe you imagine you have already been performing at the peak of your ability, but I bet you will discover—with a mix of alarm and excitement—that you can become even more excellent. Be greater, Leo! Do better! Live stronger! (P.S. As you ascend to this new level of competence, I advise you to be humbly aware of your weaknesses and immaturities. As your clout rises, you can’t afford to indulge in self-delusions.)

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): I love to see

you Virgos flirt with the uncharted and the uncanny and the indescribable. I get thrills and chills whenever I watch your fine mind trying to make sense of the fabulous and the foreign and the unfathomable. What other sign can cozy up to exotic wonders and explore forbidden zones with as much no-nonsense pragmatism as you? If anyone can capture greased lightning in

by rob brezsny a bottle or get a hold of magic beans that actually work, you can.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): A friend told

me about a trick used by his grandmother, a farmer. When her brooding hens stopped laying eggs, she would put them in pillowcases that she then hung from a clothesline in a stiff breeze. After the hens got blown around for a while, she returned them to their cozy digs. The experience didn’t hurt them, and she swore it put them back on track with their egg-laying. I’m not comfortable with this strategy. It’s too extreme for an animal-lover like myself. (And I’m glad I don’t have to deal with recalcitrant hens.) But maybe it’s an apt metaphor or poetic prod for your use right now. What could you do to stimulate your own creative production?

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Now

would be an excellent time to add deft new nuances to the ways you kiss, lick, hug, snuggle, caress, and fondle. Is there a worthy adventurer who will help you experiment with these activities? If not, use your pillow, your own body, a realistic life-size robot, or your imagination. This exercise will be a good warm-up for your other assignment, which is to upgrade your intimacy skills. How might you do that? Hone and refine your abilities to get close to people. Listen deeper, collaborate stronger, compromise smarter, and give more. Do you have any other ideas?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

“If I had nine hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first six sharpening my ax,” said Abraham Lincoln, one of America’s most productive presidents. I know you Sagittarians are more renowned for your bold, improvisational actions than your careful planning and strategic preparation, but I think the coming weeks will be a time when you can and should adopt Lincoln’s approach. The readier you are, the freer you’ll be to apply your skills effectively and wield your power precisely.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Your

astrological house of communication will be the scene of substantial clamor and ruckus in the coming weeks. A bit of the hubbub will be flashy but empty. But much of it should be pretty interesting, and some of it will even be useful. To get the best possible results, be patient and objective rather than jumpy and reactive. Try to find the deep codes buried inside the mixed messages. Discern the hidden meanings lurking within the tall tales and reckless gossip. If you can deal calmly with the turbulent flow, you will give your social circle a valuable gift.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The best

oracular advice you’ll get in the coming days probably won’t arise from your dreams or an astrological reading or a session with a psychic, but rather by way of seemingly random signals, like an overheard conversation or a sign on the side of a bus or a scrap of paper you find lying on the ground. And I bet the most useful relationship guidance you receive won’t be from an expert, but maybe from a blog you stumble upon or a barista at a cafe or one of your old journal entries. Be alert for other ways this theme is operating, as well. The usual sources may not have useful info about their specialties. Your assignment is to gather up accidental inspiration and unlikely teachings.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

Zoologists say that cannibalizing offspring is common in the animal kingdom, even among species that care tenderly for their young. So when critters eat their kids, it’s definitely “natural.” But I trust that in the coming weeks, you won’t devour your own children. Nor, I hope, will you engage in any behavior that metaphorically resembles such an act. I suspect that you may be at a low ebb in your relationship with some creation or handiwork or influence that you generated out of love. But please don’t abolish it, dissolve it or abandon it. Just the opposite, in fact: Intensify your efforts to nurture it.
