Chico: Say no to a ban While cities throughout California scramble to react to a deadline in a

new state law, Chico will be better served if it sits back and takes a more thoughtful approach. The law is part of a package of three bills, collectively known as the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act (MMRSA), that went into effect Jan. 1 and creates a framework for licensing and taxing the drug for commercial sale. Unfortunately, the bills came with a deadline of March 1 for local governments to enact laws relating to cannabis cultivation in order to maintain local control. This has cities and towns—including every other municipality in Butte County—acting brashly and outright banning growing, selling and delivering medical marijuana.

What many of these cities’ attorneys have told their councils seems to be disingenuous. Many have recommended a ban on growing despite those municipalities already having laws in place regulating the practice, and they’re citing recommendations from the League of California Cities. Thing is, just as Chico City Councilman Randall Stone, who’s a member of that organization, told us, those recommendations say that an outright ban is prudent only if a municipality has no existing law on the books.

Making all this even more contentious is the fact that Assembly Bill 21, which calls for a repeal of the March 1 deadline, already has passed the Senate and has widespread support in the Assembly and by Gov. Jerry Brown.

With the Chico City Council poised to take action regarding medical marijuana in relation to MMRSA on Tuesday (Feb. 2), we urge discussion and thorough consideration of the future of medical marijuana in our city.

Chico already has a functional law on the books. All the council needs to do is stand behind it. □

Let’s make The Esplanade a ‘complete street’ So white, so wrong T

Some options, like achieving ADA compliance, may seem more palatable to the community than others, such as roundabouts, unsynchronized lights or a separated bikeway, but we should strive to make The Esplanade a “complete street” that serves the needs of all users.

The notion of complete streets helps us look through a wider lens than just one set of users (whether motorists, bicyclists or pedestrians) to see the whole picture. vital community connectors, but not both. Those who don’t bike might question why we need better bike facilities, but as part of a complete-street solution, a separated bikeway on The Esplanade will contribute positively to everyone.

In addition to improving bicyclist safety, bikeways lower the speed of vehicles by narrowing traffic lanes. They protect pedestrians by giving bicyclists a designated lane off the sidewalk. They increase revenue for local businesses by increasing slow-moving traffic past storefronts and raise property values (both residential and commercial).

Finally, a separated bikeway on The Esplanade will encourage more people to give bicycling a try, improving their health as well as reducing vehicle congestion and improving our air quality.

Nationally, 50 percent of trips are under 3 miles and are easily managed by biking or walking, but fewer than 2 percent of people currently make that choice.

In Chico, our wonderful weather and geography offer even more opportunities for bicycling. We don’t need to be afraid of safety-related improvements; we should instead embrace a variety of safe and healthy transportation options and make The Esplanade enjoyable for all. □

Saturday Night Live did a brilliant job skewering the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the Oscars’ lack of diversity with its skit showing white movie extras and one-off characters beating out the brilliant performances of their minority castmates.

That bit of social commentary comes during the second year in row that actors of color were ignored by the Academy. That is, for two straight years, all of the nominees for Best Actor and Actress and Best Supporting Actor and Actress were Caucasian. Or, as has been described all over Twitter since the nominees were announced last week, #OscarsSoWhite.

Indeed, that probably has a lot to do with the fact that Oscar voters are overwhelmingly white (more than 90 percent), overwhelmingly male (70 percent) and older (average age, 60s). That’s something that needs to change and we hope that the recent efforts to increase diversity actually do so.

We cannot blame the actors and other industry insiders who are planning to boycott this year’s awards ceremony. The Academy has an obligation to better reflect the makeup of the film-going public that supports the industry.

As for the nominations themselves, at no time in the history of film has there been a more diverse cast of movies, actors, directors, etc., to choose from. Moreover, as critics have pointed out, there were many stellar performances in 2015 by people of color. Perhaps what makes the oversight more egregious is that it comes during this time of heightened race relations throughout the country.

Chico may be far from the glitz and glamor of Hollywood, but what’s happening there transcends the area’s confines. The Oscars are universal.

They are heralded in the homes of viewers from Butte County to Bangkok.

It’s time they are treated as such by the Academy. □

déjà vu News this week that the Torres Community Shelter is struggling financially brought me back to December 2008, a full year into the Great Recession. Times were tight for almost everyone I knew back then, myself included. Many people’s investments had plummeted or evaporated, some folks chose to walk away from homes that no longer held their value, and others still lost their jobs and had no choice but to become homeless.

Some ended up seeking refuge at the Torres Shelter, which serves men, women and children seven days a week.

I count myself among the lucky ones. My CN&R colleagues and I took a temporary cut in pay to ride out the worst of the storm, but nobody, at least not in my department, was laid off. Reporters at many other publications were not so fortunate; newsrooms around the country were gutted during what was officially a 19-month recession, though the effects have lasted much longer.

Most newspapers will never be the same. Journalism will never be the same.

Our communities have changed a lot, too. Locally, we are seeing more homeless people on the streets, meaning the demand for services has never been greater. Back in ’08, according to our reporting at the time, the Torres shelter welcomed in between 70 and 80 guests nightly. These days, more than 100 people lay their heads there each evening (see Ernesto Rivera’s report on page 11).

Right now, the shelter has enough money to continue its operations through the next month or two. However, it needs the community’s support to be sustainable indefinitely. That means getting an infusion of cash soon and a steady stream of monthly donations.

Back in 2008, an anonymous donor put up tens of thousands of dollars in matching funds during a fundraising drive. I hope another generous person steps forward this time around. But I also hope that many people come forward and pledge to make a regular contribution to this worthy nonprofit.

In related news, CN&R’s toiletries drive was quite successful thanks to our readers. Hundreds and hundreds of products— from shampoo and toothbrushes to feminine products and lotions—were dropped off during the holidays (see page 24 for photo). Last year, the Torres shelter, Esplanade House and Jesus Center were the recipients of the community’s generosity. This year, we’ve chosen Stairways Programming and the 6th Street Center for Youth.

Thank you to everyone who emptied their bathroom cabinets of unused products and also to those who, like my lovely neighbors, cleaned out the shelves at Target.

On a less bright note, CN&R’s staff was reminded of the importance of fact-checking this week. We rarely need to run corrections but had no fewer than three errors in the past two issues.

All of them came from eagle-eyed readers, including Rep. Doug LaMalfa. See our letters page to check out our screw-ups. Our apologies for the mistakes. We thank the folks who wrote in not only for correcting the record but also for being regular readers of this (on most weeks) damn fine publication.

Wrong architect Re “The Chico code” (Cover story, by Ken Smith, Jan. 21): This story piqued my interest in discovering some of the “secret symbolism” of our city.

Imagine my surprise when I got to where Cort Lindahl credits the design of the Bank of America building to Timothy Pflueger, and relates much of his theories to Pflueger. The building was, in fact, designed in 1931 in the Art Deco style by Henry Anthony Minton, a San Francisco architect whose two main clients were the Bank of Italy (later Bank of America) and the Catholic Church. Minton was not a member of the Bohemian and I wonder if he would have agreed with Lindahl’s local theories?

About the boulevard Re “Uneasy Street” (Newsline,

by Howard Hardee, Jan. 21) and “Esplanade no sacred cow” (Editorial, Jan. 21): The Esplanade is one of the better functioning thoroughfares inside the Chico city limits. Sure, there is the horrible intersection at First Avenue and the lousy traffic that occurs every weekday morning in and around Chico High School, but I doubt that any widening of streets or intersections, or the addition of mini-roundabouts, separated bike lanes and pedestrian signals will improve anything.

ADA-compliant ramps at all crosswalks? Yeah, maybe a good idea.

I’m dumbfounded that no one has mentioned the bike lanes that have been there all along: the frontage roads. Yes, cyclists need to obey the traffic signs and signals, and they must be absolutely aware of what’s going on around them—especially at the intersections of First and Sacramento avenues—but cyclists need to be “head’s up” wherever they ride.

South Dakotan speaks up Re “Bearman” (Reel World, by Juan Carlos Selznick, Jan. 14): Good article about The Revenant. However, Juan Carlos Selznick states that Hugh Glass was mauled by a bear “somewhere along the Missouri River.” In fact, this incident happened at the confluence of the north and middle forks of the Grand River, over 100 miles from the Missouri River. This area is now under water due to the construction of Shadehill Reservoir. A monument is constructed on the south side overlooking the area. This recreational lake is located a few miles to the south of Lemmon, S.D., my hometown.

The town is located on the North Dakota-South Dakota border in the northwestern corner of the state. I spent the first 18 years of my life there. In the early ’60s, our Boy Scout troop 48 camped out and hiked the ground near the monument. We learned the history of Hugh Glass from our scoutmaster.

This Hugh Glass history will stick in our minds forever. To see it finally make it to the big screen is gratifying. The town had a red-carpet premiere and other events leading up to the release of the movie. Not much of the hoopla

made it out to Hollywood, but to South Dakotans, is was huge.

Celebrating ukes Re “Small package, big gift” (Arts & culture, by Ken Smith, Jan. 21): I had the privilege of seeing The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra at Laxson Auditorium. It was fabulous, but just as wonderful in their own way were The Pukes, the kids from Parkview Elementary School playing and singing their rendition of a Taylor Swift hit. They really sounded great!

It’s great to see how popular the uke has become in Chico over the last few years: There’s Chico Ukes; which has over 40 active members and meets every month; uke programs in the public schools; and, most recently, a beginning uke class for retirees 50 and over through the OLLI program (sorry, it’s full for this semester) at Chico State.

In addition, the local music stores are now stocking a large assortment of ukes for beginners and more experienced players alike.

There are ukulele festivals, cruises, workshops, etc. Besides being a fun instrument that is suitable for any genre of music (although I’ve never heard opera played on it), the ukulele has a multicultural as well as a multigenerational appeal and

is relatively easy to learn for those with no musical background or playing experience. Yep, the uke is thriving in Chico!

More on cop shooting Re “Death and justice” (Newslines,

by Meredith J. Cooper, Dec. 24): The response to the police shooting in Paradise has engendered a lot of negative comment directed at District Attorney Mike Ramsey for not charging Officer Patrick Feaster with a crime. As a non-attorney, I tried to read the California penal codes related to criminal negligence, manslaughter and homicide.

I think I understand why Mr. Ramsey took that position. To be criminal, the act must be intentional or so grossly negligent that a reasonable person in the same situation would know that the behavior could result in serious injury or death. An accident or a mistake is not criminal.

In the video, Officer Feaster exits his car, draws his weapon, and the weapon discharges almost instantly. Officer Feaster used a Glock 21c, which does not have an external safety. It can discharge unintentionally when mishandled.

Feaster had to pull his gun with his finger already on the trigger.

The gun appeared to fire accidentally. Actually, Mr. Ramsey should have presented the case to the Grand Jury to let them determine if Officer Feaster committed a crime. However, I do not excuse Officer Feaster’s conduct. Officer Feaster’s subsequent actions were deplorable.

Congressman’s rebuttal Re “Hypocrisy in action” (Editorial, Jan. 14) The editorial claims Republicans blocked the Senate bill in a House committee; in reality, the senators were unable to pass their bill out of the Senate.

It never even came to the House for consideration and I had no opportunity to vote on the bill, much less “stymie” it. The editorial states that a “local” agreement required Congressional approval in order to move forward, ignoring the obvious contradiction in claiming a purely local agreement would even need Congress to act.

The truth is, the Senate bill would have authorized hundreds of millions of federal taxpayer dollars for the project. The editorial also ignores that the Senate bill indemnified PacifiCorp of any liability, leaving the federal government holding the bag for problems during dam removal, or if the 13 million yards of sediment behind the dams is contaminated or caused flooding downstream.

It seems unusual for the CN&R to support massive giveaways to a multibillion-dollar corporation owned by Warren Buffett, but that’s exactly what it does in this editorial. The fact is, California and PacifiCorp can start removing these dams tomorrow if they choose to; they just need to pay for it themselves. The only reason California, PacifiCorp and environmental groups demanded federal involvement was to pick up the tab.

We’ve expanded our quest several parsecs (3.26 light years) in hopes of locating phenomena seemingly extinct in contemporary America.

Our aspirations are not to discover large lifeless bodies but rather something much more bedazzling. We’re anticipating an event that would transform Earth and maybe, inadvertently, earn a Nobel Peace Prize. Our dream is this: to discover a space-time in the cosmos where small living bodies still play joyfully outdoors in the neighborhoods, thriving on the infinite games they themselves create, unencumbered from fear except the dreaded thought of knowing Dad’s evening whistle will soon close the curtain on another magical day.

Perhaps we will also need to enlist the Hubble Space Telescope and Mount Wilson for this monumental mission. Any assistance will be appreciated. We’ll even share our new scope!

NEWSLINES DOWNSTROKE midway may close

A stretch of the Midway between Durham and Richvale may be closed for an estimated 18 months to replace two century-old bridges.

The Butte County Board of Supervisors considered two separate plans for the bridge replacement, and voted unanimously Tuesday (Jan. 26) to pursue the option to build in the current location of two bridges spanning Butte Creek and its overflow.

According to a staff report, the alternative wouldn’t require a prolonged road closure because the bridge would be built west of the existing roadway at a cost of $14.5 million. However, area residents favored the closure plan, as it costs about $1 million less and requires farmers to give up less land.

The project is scheduled to break ground in June 2017. About 1,200 vehicles would be detoured daily during construction.

Postage Pilfered

Several community mailboxes in the Chico area have recently been pried open and their contents stolen, and the Chico Police Department is urging residents to be on the lookout for evidence of similar crimes, according to a Jan. 25 public service announcement.

Police are asking anyone who’s been the victim of mail theft to file a report through its online Coplogic system, as well as with the U.S. Postal Service. They are also asking citizens to call immediately if suspicious-looking people are spotted in their neighborhoods, and to submit any relevant surveillance videos.

Mail thefts sometimes go unnoticed, the release reads, so residents are urged to talk to their neighbors, set fraud alerts, monitor credit reports for questionable activity and consider switching to a post office box.

Bec head stePs down

Butte Environmental Council will soon say goodbye to Robyn DiFalco, who is stepping down after four years as executive director of the environmental nonprofit. DiFalco (pictured) cited personal reasons for leaving, including spending more time with family.

DiFalco’s last day isn’t set in stone, as she’ll stick around to ensure her successor’s smooth transition. The plan, DiFalco said, is to select a candidate by the end of February and make the change in March.

“I care very passionately about BEC, about our work and all the people that I’ve worked with,” DiFalco said. “I will continue to be involved with the organization, I just won’t be a director. I’ll be a community volunteer and I will continue to be passionate about our issues.”

when it comes to medical marijuana. In an effort to comply with new state laws that by went into effect Jan. 1 Meredith J. and included a March 1 Cooper deadline for local govm e re d i t h c @ ernments to act in order n ew srev i ew. c o m to retain regulatory control, many chose the easiest, and strictest, route: Just ban the stuff.

Municipalities in Butte County have followed suit. Oroville adopted a ban on growing and delivery services, as did Biggs and Gridley. In Paradise, a similar ban was passed, with an amendment allowing primary caregivers to deliver medicine to patients but banning delivery services. Chico is next, with action set on the agenda for Feb. 2.

“As much as I’d like to say a lot of that was reflexive, in many it was not,” Chico City Councilman Randall Stone said about the bans. “There’s a desire to have this go away and if we ban it, that means it’s going to go away. But that’s just not the way it works.”

Here’s what has happened to prompt this recent scramble:

1. The state passed three bills, collectively known as the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act (MMRSA), that went into effect this month. They create a framework for the commercial sale of medical marijuana, including licensing and taxation. They also say that local governments that have laws relating to cultivation will retain local licensing and regulatory authority—but those that don’t will be preempted by the state. The deadline for putting a law on the books is March 1. Chico already has an ordinance regulating cultivation.

Making the issue stickier is the fact that even before MMRSA went into effect, the bills’ authors announced that the deadline had been a mistake, a holdover from a previous version. Assembly Bill 21, which would repeal that deadline, is on the fast track and was passed by the Senate on Monday (Jan. 25). It has widespread support in the Assembly and Gov. Jerry Brown has said he will sign it.

2. The League of California Cities—of which Stone is a member—went out on what Stone called a “road show” to educate municipalities about MMRSA and how to retain local control. The league outlines on its website (cacities.org) the most important aspects of MMRSA and what cities need to know or do. Among

those recommendations is instituting a ban on cultivation in municipalities where there is no regulation currently, in order to provide ample time to create thoughtful legislation.

3. Cities across the state took those guidelines, along with the impending deadline, and many chose to ban cultivation, dispensaries and delivery services.

(Note: The March 1 date, and the threat of state preemption, relates only to growing medical marijuana. Based on news reports, however, many cities’ staffs lumped dispensaries and delivery services in with a cultivation ban.)

“The league road show has caused a lot of panic in a lot of cities. I think that’s what you’re seeing in Paradise and Oroville,” Stone said. “But, look, this doesn’t have to be as draconian as you’re making it out to be. There’s no reason to ban everything or allow everything; there’s no reason to get so excited.”

Inside the machine Retired Army major knows how it works—and doesn’t n his 20 years of active duty in the U.S. Army, Maj. John Crosby Igrew to understand the military in

ways no outsider can. Now retired from the service and teaching at Chico State, he can offer valuable insights to students in his political science classes.

During a recent interview in his campus office, he said he tells students who are thinking of joining the military: “It’s a crapshoot; it all depends on your commanding officer.” Some brigade commanders are terrific people, but “others are just assholes.”

His point is that “these are real people. They join the military for different reasons. We do a disservice when we see the military as monolithic,” either all bad or all good.

On Thursday (Feb. 4), Crosby, who is 55, will be the first speaker in a new lecture series, Veteran Voices, co-sponsored by the Chico Peace & Justice Center and Chico State’s Peace Institute. The series is “aimed at educating people

about what the military is actually like from veterans who lived through it,” according to the CPJC website.

Crosby doesn’t fit it the image of the typical soldier. For one thing, he’d already graduated from UCLA and gotten married when, in 1984, at the relatively advanced age of 24, he enlisted as a private, seeing it as “an opportunity to serve my country and see the world.” Luckily, his wife was willing to see the world with him, because they had 14 different postings—and four kids—along the way.

As an enlisted man, he became an expert in platoon radio communication, battalion legal issues and anti-Soviet armored-vehicle actions. After completing Officer Candidate School and becoming a lieutenant, he participated in Operation Just Cause (the invasion of Panama), and then, in 1993, ended up stationed in Germany with the rank of captain and working in military intelligence, brief-

ing higher-ups in the chain of command with a focus on the Middle East.

And so he has an interesting perspective on the invasion of Iraq.

The plan anticipated taking 260 days to reach Baghdad.

Instead, when the U.S. actually invaded in early 2003, President George W. Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld decided to attack quickly, with far fewer soldiers—just 100,000—and no plan for putting a working government in place.

Iraq is a good example of politicians’ misuse of the military, Crosby said. Top military officials all knew that Iraq posed no threat to the U.S., and yet Bush and Rumsfeld insisted on going in. The result is the unsettled, dangerous state of affairs we see today in the Middle East.

There are also times, Crosby said, when the U.S. has failed to use its military when doing so could have saved lives.

As President Bill Clinton has acknowledged, failing to stop the massacre in Rwanda by sending in U.S. troops is his greatest regret as commander-in-chief.

Fortunately for his students, Crosby has had a ringside seat at many of the significant conflicts of the modern era, from Kuwait and Iraq to the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Now, as he put it, “instead of briefing colonels, I’m briefing students.”

served more than 700 people, including 54 families with children, and 265 people made the transition into permanent housing.

“When we started as an agency back in ’98, we never wanted and were never going to allow ourselves to be a warehouse,” said Executive Director Brad Montgomery. “We will never be a place that just puts people up and they leave without any change in their lives. Our focus has always been, ‘How do we help this person so that they don’t need services like these anymore?’”

Those efforts are now in jeopardy, however, as the shelter faces a major financial crisis. As it stands, the facility has enough resources only for the next six to eight weeks.

Historically, it’s been kept afloat by grants and community donations, but three significant issues are disrupting that funding model.

Last year, the grant alone covered more than $200,000 in operating costs. “We’re not going to find out anytime soon if we’re even eligible for those funds,” Montgomery said.

The second issue is that the shelter took in fewer donations over the holidays. Typically, contributions during the giving season are used to cover costs during the time of year when donations are low.

The third issue is that the shelter is seeing an increase in demand for its services; for the past few months it has been housing more than 100 people a night.

“When I first got here in 2009, our average was 47 people per night,” Montgomery said. “Then we went through a spike and then it leveled off, then it moved back up to 70, then 80 people per night and last year it was 90 people per night. It used to be that 100 people was a huge amount. Then you get used to that new level of people and that just costs more.”

The shelter extended its operations

for about two months by laying off three employees and cutting pay for others, Montgomery said. The staff overwhelmingly understood the circumstances and knew what was necessary to keep providing

services, he said.

“Our whole focus in how we address this was how do we minimize the impact as much as possible with our guests, because our first mission is providing a stable place for them to focus on their future and get out of homelessness,” Montgomery said.

In reaction to the financial challenges, Montgomery and the shelter’s board of directors are rethinking the funding model.

Instead of relying on unpredictable government grants and strong holiday donations, the shelter wants to get to a point where it can operate independently by covering each month’s expenses, which add up to approximately $50,000. The shelter has a monthly donation program called People Helping People that the board is looking to expand to stabilize its income.

“If we had 1,000 people sign up, that would pretty much eliminate our current financial crisis,” Montgomery said. “If we had 3,000 people who would give us as little as $10 a month, that would not only cover our current financial crisis, but it would [also] get us to a point that we wouldn’t have to rely on a government grant that makes or breaks us.”

“There’s a responsibility you feel to patients,” Tedford said. “It isn’t just someone walking into a bank; they become part of a team, part of a family—and, yes, you do feel a responsibility of what’s going to happen to these folks later on.

“I think we’re ... in tremendous flux.

There’s just a bunch of change going on, and I’m thinking it will lend itself to my stepping aside in a few years, in terms of recruiting people.

“I’m not going to close the door, lock it up and leave; that’s not my style. As long as God allows me to, I’ll keep going.”

leagues not only spotlighted what he has meant to pediatrics in Chico for the previous 40 years, but also what his presence— and inevitable absence—means moving forward.

After all, Tedford just turned 71, and while he has no plans to retire at this time, no one can see the future.

In just the last year, Chico lost four pediatricians: Craig Corp, Morgan Jenkins, Robert Stanley and Natalie Vogel. Corp, Jenkins and Vogel moved away; Stanley had a personal issue that forced him to close his office around this time last year.

The situation with Stanley holds particular resonance. He’s a former partner of

Tedford’s—and of Dr. James Wood, who brought Tedford to town in 1975—and at the time he stopped working, he had approximately 2,000 patients in his practice. Parents suddenly needed to find a new provider of primary care for their children in an area already short on options.

“That was a wake-up call for all of us,” Tedford told the CN&R during a recent after-hours conversation in his East Avenue office. “If you’re not going to wake up for that, you’re not going to wake up …”

Chico has eight pediatricians in private practice. Northern Valley Indian Health and Ampla Health operate clinics with pediatrics, while Enloe (besides hospital coverage) contracts with a part-time pediatrician for its Prompt Care center.

Tedford has the largest private pediatric practice in Chico, with over 6,000 active patients—more than double the local average.

Wood has one of the smallest, around 800 patients; he spends only two days a week in the office in order to accommodate medical directorships (at a children’s health center

and the county’s special-needs schools).

Still, when Stanley’s practice closed, Wood’s practice accepted over 150 of those families, some of which had multiple children.

He has one word to describe the prospect of Chico without Tedford practicing: “Tragedy.”

Wood, recipient of the Physician Legacy Award in 2005, turns 75 in April.

He remains an active mountaineer—often accompanied by another local pediatrician, Paul Wassermann, who’s also in his golden years.

“I’m not going to keep kicking over here [forever],” Wood said in his office on Rio Lindo Avenue. “As long as my legs are working, there are more mountains to climb, and the clock is ticking.”

The community’s need, along with his love of medicine, keeps Tedford going.

Like Wood, he has attempted to augment Enloe’s continual efforts at physician recruitment by seeking out his own successor.

Unsuccessful on that front, Tedford remains in business by himself, seeing patients at his

Chico, ever since arriving four decades ago, family in tow, straight from his Air Force service in Hawaii.

He met Wood during their pediatric residencies in Los Angeles; in fact, they had adjoining apartments in the Children’s Hospital housing facility, where their families would split babysitting duties.

Wood also overlapped with Tedford’s older brother, Jim, whom Pat succeeded as chief resident.

The Tedford brothers had followed in the footsteps of their father, a general practitioner in L.A. for 45 years. Jim joined a HEALTHLINES c o n t i n u e d

HEALTHLINES pediatrics practice in the San Luis Obispo area, where he’s remained to this day, so Wood wasn’t certain he’d convince his friend Pat to choose the North State over the North Coast.

Yet, when he and wife Shelley found Chico to be “exactly what we wanted,” Tedford joined Wood in private practice. Stanley joined them several years later. In the mid-’80s, they entered the umbrella of a larger organization, Chico Medical Group.

By the early ’90s, though, they’d split off into independent offices.

“This is a pretty antiquated way of practicing,” Tedford said.

“There are not a lot of places that have private practices anymore; it’s almost all big groups. This has just fit me fine, to kind of dictate your own terms.

“Then to get acknowledged with a legacy award that you made all these decisions—there are so many ways to do it, and you made your own way—is really nice.”

Nominations for Tedford for the Physician Legacy Award include praise such as “many children and adults in this community owe their health and wellness to

him.” Tedford, honored at Enloe’s general medical staff meeting Dec. 15, is on his third generation of patients.

The Facebook announcement of the award has drawn over 40,000 views, 1,450 likes and 280 comments (all positive), according to the communications department at Enloe. Along with maintaining his practice, Tedford has served as chair of the hospital’s pediatrics department, medical ethics committee and patient care committee.

“When people are talking about the legacy you leave, it’s the way you’ve practiced for years,” he said. “[The award] made me reflect a lot ... I said in my acceptance that I was humbled, proud, blessed, honored, but mostly grateful.”

Gratitude extends to wife, family, staff and colleagues. As for his source of pride, Tedford needed a few moments of thought before answering.

“I think the vast majority of days I was present. I have a talent for being here and giving people the most attention and highest quality of care that we can give and treating them the way I’d like to be treated. I’m proud of that.”

That’s a legacy. □

W

hen the city cut down 209 trees and

planted only 14 in 2014, Charles Withuhn felt a huge sense of loss for what he sees as one of the most quintessential aspects of Chico. To him, the trunks and branches that line and tower over city streets are a part of Chico’s unique charm and history. The canopy they provide is essential to the city’s health, he believes, and their care is a responsibility of the city and its residents.

In an effort to do his part, more than two years ago, Withuhn started Chico Tree Advocates, a local organization under the umbrella of the Butte Environmental Council. Members of the group work toward planting trees, educating the public and preserving Chico’s urban forest. As a donations-only, volunteer-staffed group, Chico Tree Advocates has been able to plant more than 50 trees around town, both on city and private property, in the past year. Withuhn and many fellow advocates feel that the path the city is taking, in terms of cutting down trees and either not replacing them or replacing them with very small trees, is detrimental to Chico’s urban forest.

“If you can imagine Chico with a lot less trees, that’s not a pretty picture,” Withuhn said. “What makes me grateful to live here is not the bushes. It’s these towering giants that have been here since Annie Bidwell, and they’re not being replaced.”

The city of Chico’s 2015 Sustainability Indicators Report includes an outline of the number of tees the city has removed as well as how many it’s planted. And surveying the years prior illustrates how dramatic 2014’s tree removal was: In 2013, 87 were chopped and 38 planted; and in 2012, before laying off the tree crew, including the urban forester position, it cut down 170 and planted 107.

The reason for a vast majority of the removals, especially with larger trees, is that they are in locations that don’t accommodate them or they interfere with certain infrastructure like power, gas or sewer lines, said Dan Efseaff, Chico’s park and natural

resources manager. If space allows, the city will replant a large tree, but only after taking its entire lifespan into account.

“In the past, people put stuff in the ground without giving a full [consideration] of 20 years from now,” Efseaff said. “We have a ‘right tree, right place’ philosophy that takes these things into account.”

The problem for Withuhn is the way in which the city is replanting trees; he sees a much better value in large trees, like sycamores and oaks, for their role in energy savings and heat reduction through shade, and their long life spans of up to 300 years. The alternative is planting medium-size trees, like maples, that will have to be replaced in 60 years and offer much less shade. And looking at the numbers, clearly many trees aren’t being replaced at all. Withuhn, with disappointment in his voice, pointed to many areas around town where he’s seen trees reduced to stumps or replaced only by smaller trees.

“The logo, in front of City Hall, is a tree, and yet when it comes to a problem with a sidewalk, instead of moving the sidewalk, it’s ‘Cut down the trees,’” he said. “There are other ways to do it and their answers are always: ‘Cut down trees.’”

property, the city has to review the site and approve the species or the space, but if it’s on private property, Withuhn and other volunteers can start digging right away. The group tries to encourage people to plant large, drought-tolerant, native trees like valley oaks and California sycamores.

“My goal is to plant 1,000 trees a year for six years, so we can get our sapling numbers up so that we’ll pass on to the next generation a robust urban forest,” Withuhn said.

“We’ll need help to do that.”

“Twenty years from now, our children won’t remember or care about most of the issues we’re worried about today,” Withuhn said. “This has not only been a gift, it’s a covenant. It’s an opportunity to pass on to the next generation a robust urban forest.

Let’s not be the generation that was too busy to plant and protect trees in Chico.” □

For the year ahead, the city of Chico is plan-

ning several initiatives to care for Chico’s urban forest, Efseaff said, including planting more than 100 trees through a PG&E donation. The city hopes to work closely with groups like the Chico Tree Advocates to make sure the city’s “right tree, right place” philosophy is used when planting on both city and private property. The city is also moving forward with restoring the urban forest manager position, which has been vacant since 2013. Even with these efforts, Efseaff said there will still have to be some removals.

“The drought looks like somewhat of a distant memory—I hope it is—but we’re still in a water deficit,” Efseaff said. “There’s a backlog of trees that have suffered for the last four years, so there will be some removals.”

Withuhn and other advocates have been meeting with City Council members, speaking at meetings and tabling at the Saturday farmers’ market to make sure the city and the community do not forget about the preservation of Chico’s urban forest.

READY, SET, SWAP It may be premature for spring planting, but gardeners can get an early start on planning their gardens (and helping others grow their own) with the seventh annual Seed Swap. The swap is held potluck-style, with participants invited to visit tables containing different types of seeds, bulbs, plants, cuttings and scion and take or leave what they like. The event is hosted by the Chico Seed Lending Library, GRUB Education Program and Earthshed Solutions, and will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Trinity United Methodist Church (285 E. Over the past few weeks, it seems like almost every corner of Chico is changing, whether it’s a new business moving in or an old one leaving.

Here’s some of the shake-up in the business community: For eight years, Susen Hille has made latex paint on glass storefronts her medium of choice for displaying her artistic talents.

Self-taught since the age of 15, Hille is familiar with most of the media in the art world. She is skilled in oil painting, ceramics, woodworking, stone carving and jewelry making, but she makes window painting her living with her business Black Cat Window Painting, which she opened in October 2008. Hille moved to Northern California to care for her father in 1998 and held a number of jobs before the opportunity arose for her to start her business. She recently sat down with the CN&R to share her passion for creativity and talk about what life is like as a window painter. Why did you start window painting?

It was kind of a spontaneous combustion. I had moved back from Vancouver, Wash., to care for my father. I was working as a technician for the United Artist Feature, and I quit when the economy tanked. It was a bummer because I thought that no one would want their windows painted! It was dur-

ing Halloween season, and the “black cat” title came because I wanted to catch people’s attention with the name. It must have worked!

going professional. I had an epiphany during that period of my life, and art started to click for me, and it hasn’t stopped.

What distinguishes you from other window painters?

The biggest challenge is the weather! If it’s too wet, too hot, too cold or too windy, a window may take six hours instead of two. One time it was so windy my paint palette, which is styrofoam, flew out of my hand into my face!

For one, I scrape off all my paintings when the customer wants me to. That is important, because I have almost lost business when potential clients think that I won’t and they are stuck with it and have to take care of it themselves. I also freehand all of the work I do. The client gives me an idea of what they want, and I go for it.

Have you had any professional training?

Nope. I took a mandatory art class in high school, and my teacher was floored. He thought I should be

no more monks The closure of downtown’s Monks Wine Lounge & Bistro came as a shock to me and, it seems, the rest of Chico. When a friend of mine told me it was gone, I stared at her in disbelief. “Surely they’re just closed for the holidays,” I said. Not so. A sign on the restaurant in early January noted that it would be closed for a few days, but it never reopened. I can’t find Monks’ Facebook page anymore and the phone number is no longer in service.

The real rub for local patrons is that Monks’ gift cards were being sold at Costco in late 2015 and are no longer usable. There’s good news, though— I talked to Costco customer service last week and they are giving cash refunds for the gift cards, or you can get Costco Cash.

Almendra Winery and Distillery also kicks off its grand opening in Durham this Friday, Jan. 29, with a ribbon cutting at 6 p.m. Locally owned by Carol and Berton Bertagna, the winery has already started bottling and eight wines are currently available. Distilled spirits are expected to be available in March.

Another new business on the block is European Wax Center. I have to admit, I was a tad hesitant about the place. But three days before our company photos, I realized my eyebrows needed some help. I popped in about 10 minutes before closing (8 p.m.!) and was pleasantly surprised.

The atmosphere doesn’t feel like a strip mall at all—they are in the Safeway shopping center on Mangrove—and the service was impeccable.

Plus, I no longer look like Bert from Sesame Street, and it was nearly painfree, all thanks to Kendra.

he movie year was actually quite terrible until December … and then it exploded.

This is something I’ve said many times before. The movie year has become quite predictable. You get a punch up May through July and a crap load of great movies in late November and December. Many of the other months can be barren.

Rather than taking the artistically enriched fertilizer that is great movies and then spreading it out on the field we call the film year generously and evenly over 12 months, Hollywood just takes a big dump on us in December.

On top of unleashing a new Star Wars this last month that totally rocked balls, a bunch of excellent films got in before the old Dec. 31 cutoff and made the year look substantial in retrospect.

N&R film critic gives us his take on the best and worst movies of 2015

THE BEST OF THE YEAR

have ever seen, and you probably will never see anything like it again.

1. The Revenant: Leonardo DiCaprio should be getting his first Oscar this year. His mostly dialogue-free performance here is the year’s best in many ways. It’s a case of an actor putting his everything into a movie, and the payoff is spectacular. By my count, he should have a few Oscars already.

This is the second year in a row I’m giving top honors to a film by director Alejandro González Inárritu, who made last year’s Birdman. His film about a frontier man (DiCaprio) getting his ass kicked by a bear and seeking revenge on a villainous trapper (Tom Hardy as the year’s nastiest bad guy) is a note-for-note perfect film. See it on the big screen and marvel at what a real filmmaker can do.

Also marvel at the sight of vegetarian DiCaprio eating a raw bison liver on screen.

It’s gross.

3. Steve Jobs: Michael Fassbender had a great year with Slow West, Macbeth and this one from director Danny Boyle (127 Hours).

It’s an unflattering look at the guy who, with his iTunes and phone doodads, killed that thing called patience for a large percentage of humanity. I love Apple Music, and I’m married to my iPhone 6 Plus, but my ability to shop and let conversations brew over time has been decimated. Thanks, Steve Jobs!

Anyway, it’s a very well-done film.

2. Anomolisa: This is the year’s most visually innovative film and, because it was written and co-directed by Charlie Kaufman (Synecdoche, New York; Being John Malkovich); easily its most bizarre. It’s a stop-motion animation movie that will blow your mind. It’s nothing like anything you

The Hateful Eight: After the slight step backward that was Django Unchained (good, but not great), Quentin Tarantino gets back on track with this crazy, beautifullooking Western that is an acting showcase for everybody involved. A lot has been said about the 70mm cut for its visuals, but not enough has been said about Samuel L. Jackson doing career-best work as a Civil War soldier turned bounty hunter who crosses paths with a surly, hairy Kurt Russell.

It’s time to give Jennifer Jason Leigh an Oscar. She’s so good it hurts in this movie.

5. Star Wars: The Force Awakens:

J.J. Abrams has achieved geek bliss. Daisy

Ridley gets my vote for an Oscar nomination as Rey. Star Wars is back in a big way.

I’ve seen it twice. I loved it the first time.

I went crazy for it the second time. That’s the mark of a great Star Wars movie. Yes, it follows many of the same beats from the original. I don’t have a problem with that.

Are we still in spoiler-free zone when it comes to Star Wars? No, we aren’t? OK, then let me tell you about what happens to …

I’m kidding.

6. Inside Out: Pixar gave us two films in

2015, and this would be the better of the two. This would be the much better of the two. It has inventive characters, an engaging plot and a terrific voice cast, including Amy Poehler and Bill Hader. The other one has dinosaurs harvesting corn. Did you hear me?

7. The End of the Tour: Some of the

year’s best dialogue occurs between Jesse Eisenberg’s reporter and Jason Segel’s David Foster Wallace in this road trip movie about the book tour for Infinite Jest. Segel makes another nice foray into the dramatic, while Eisenberg gets in another good performance before putting himself under the microscope as Lex Luthor for this year’s Batman v.

8. Spotlight: Michael Keaton continues his return from the dead as a newspaper editor investigating some bad priests in Boston.

You’ll find one of 2015’s best ensemble casts in this one (Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber).

9. Beasts of No Nation: Abraham Attah

and Idris Elba are astoundingly good as an African boy and his terrible commander/ father figure fighting a bloody civil war.

Produced by Netflix.

10. Brooklyn: A young Irish woman (Saoirse Ronan) has to choose between Ireland and Brooklyn, N.Y., in the ’50s. The only problem I have with this movie is that there are too many damned Yankee fans in it.

11. Ex Machina: With this robot movie and

a little thing called Star Wars, Oscar Isaac got his charismatic ass into the year’s two best science-fiction offerings.

12. Love & Mercy: Whether or not you like

the music of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, it’s fascinating to watch Paul Dano’s depiction of a young Wilson filling his living room with beach sand and trying to make animals sing. John Cusack does his best acting in years as an older, more scattered Wilson, while Elizabeth Banks impresses as the love interest that got Wilson away from his crazy doctor (Paul Giamatti).

13. Creed: Another great ’70s franchise got

its seventh chapter this year. This one finds a creative way to fire up the Rocky machine again by making Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) the mentor character, not unlike Burgess Meredith in the original series.

Michael B. Jordan is impressive as the son of Apollo. He also took real punches in the face and allowed himself to be knocked out in the name of great cinema.

14. The Martian: Matt Damon won a

Golden Globe for best actor in a musical or comedy in this Ridley Scott sci-fi adventure.

That is a bit of a stretch, but he does have plenty of funny moments as a dude stranded on Mars eating potatoes cultivated by his own poop. Actually, maybe this is a comedy.

15. Straight Outta Compton: While Jason Mitchell is quite good as N.W.A. rap-

per Eazy-E in this biopic, O’Shea Jackson Jr. (son of Ice Cube) is perhaps the film’s real star. There were times I was convinced I was watching his dad.

16. Room: Jacob Tremblay

will break your heart as Jack, a 5-year-old captive The Martian who knows nothing beyond the small room in which he’s been imprisoned his whole life. Brie Larson is equally good as Ma, who was kidnapped when she was 17 and is trying to give her son a life with meaning.

17. Sicario: Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and

Benicio Del Toro are all exceptional in this scary tale of Americans intervening in Juarez, Mexico. While it isn’t a horror film, some of its scenes are certainly among the year’s most frightening.

18. The Big Short: Another outstanding ensemble (Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale) in the service of some good directing from Adam McKay, taking a break from his usual broad comedies to examine the housing bubble that nearly collapsed the world economy.

19. It Follows: There were many good horror films this year, and I’m going to give this nice ode to John Carpenter the edge over the likes of Bone Tomahawk, We Are Still Here and Goodnight Mommy.

Expressionless people unrelentingly following you can be really scary.

20. Cop Car: Kevin Bacon stars as a creepy cop in pursuit of two stupid kids who take his patrol car for a joyride. Director Jon Watts has been handed the Spider-Man franchise, and I’m guessing some executives saw his work here and thought the guy might know what he’s doing. I’m telling you, he most certainly does.

In the Heart of the Sea

THE WORST OF THE YEAR 1. A Walk in the Woods: Nick Nolte acts like a jackass with broken glass in his throat for nearly two hours, and Robert Redford does a lot of bug-eyed looks. This is a movie about hiking the Appalachian Trail that spends very little time on that trail and a lot of time in laundromats and diners. This might be the worst movie Redford has ever made, and he was in Indecent Proposal. Nolte needs to stop. Just stop.

2. In the Heart of the Sea/Blackhat: Chris Hemsworth sucked major ass in two lousy movies this year, and he wasn’t all that good in the colossal letdown Avengers: Age of Ultron either. I recommend this movie if you like huge bullshit-looking CGI whales and fake beards chased with spazz dialogue.

3. The Good Dinosaur: This mess has

dinosaurs harvesting corn! The production problems that plagued the movie are glaringly evident in the mess that wound up on screen. The dinosaurs look like salamanders.

It’s a blight on the cinematic rose that is Pixar.

4. The Green Inferno: Eli Roth released two

movies this year. This one involved cannibals and body horror, two things very much in his wheelhouse. The other (Knock, Knock) involved Keanu Reeves getting harassed by two girls. The one with Reeves was much better. That’s a big surprise.

5. Fantastic Four: Why can’t anybody make a decent Fantastic Four movie? Come on! There’s a rock guy, and a stretchy guy and a guy constantly bursting into flames. These should be the ingredients for never-ending excitement. Yeah, an invisible woman is kind of boring, but there’s a guy constantly on fire in this franchise! How come they keep screwing it up?

6. Pixels/The Cobbler/The Ridiculous Six: Let’s

just stick all of the Adam Sandler movies into one foul lump. It’s just safer that way. It’s worth noting that Tom McCarthy, frontrunner for a directing Oscar (Spotlight) also directed The Cobbler.

It’s been an off-kilter year for Mr. McCarthy.

Worst Thing On TV this Year: I don’t care what anyone says

7. Fifty Shades of Grey: This movie is about as erotic and romantic as sticking your dick into a vat of hardened, moldy bacon grease and stroking your butthole with a recently deceased parakeet.

puter screen while a bunch of teen douchebags Skype each other. I’m not exaggerating … that’s what this was about. An exercise in pure, tedious boredom. Movies now apparently cost $73 to

make. You future director kids better get cracking on those iPhone cameras!

9. The Gunman: This is basically a movie with the sole purpose of showing you that a shirtless Sean Penn still looks pretty good even though he smokes 50 packs a day. He has washboard abs, and his career is in the toilet.

10. Chappie: If you need to see a robot movie made in 2015, see Ex Machina. This one’s insipid nonsense. I also think its failure caused director Neill Blomkamp’s star to fade, thus delaying plans for his Alien 5 where Ripley, Corporal Hicks and Newt would’ve come back to life in some sort of alternate universe. So, in some ways, Chappie is the film I hate most in 2015.

THE YEAR AHEAD In 2016, you will be getting a lot of sequels and reboots! The already mentioned Batman v.

Superman, an all-female Ghostbusters, the longawaited and perhaps dreaded Independence Day sequel and the next Captain America are all on the way.

As for the more cerebral, the Coen Brothers will deliver Hail, Caesar! and Terrence Malick directs Knight of Cups. Jeff Nichols helms Midnight Special, and Seth Rogen gives us the animated Sausage Party. Actually, Rogen has described that last one as the dirtiest, most juvenile thing he’s ever made, so don’t expect it in the Oscar race.

“No one saw me go off the road,” she said in a recent interview, “and when I regained consciousness, I realized there was no way to call for help.”

Battaglia managed to get out of the car, only to realize that she was surrounded by cement walls and apparently trapped.

“I began to pray, and then I heard a voice .... It was a male-sounding voice, and it said, ‘Come this way.’ I crawled towards it. When I got to the place the voice came from, there was no one there, but I could see a bunch of cement bags piled up that I was able to climb back to the road to flag down help. I spent the next two weeks in intensive care at Enloe following emergency surgery.

“The whole experience was profound to say the least, and during the weeks and months that followed, I felt a strong pull to begin writing and performing music.

I began learning how to play guitar and started writing. I ended up staying in Paradise and started my journey as a musician. I started at open mic at Has Beans and moved forward from there.”

In addition to getting busy writing songs and promoting local shows (Battaglia founded the annual all-female Chillith Fair showcases that ran from 2006 to 2009), she pursued and acquired a master certificate in songwriting from Berklee College of Music. “I received excellent vocal training and a wealth of tools and techniques in songwriting,” she said of the Berklee program.

The latest artistic fruit of that experience is her new self-titled album—her third full-length—which will be debuted at a release party this Friday, Jan. 29, at Chico Women’s Club. Battaglia regularly performs in a variety of configurations— solo, three-piece or with her regular band of ringers (which currently includes guitarist Brian “Gravy” Asher and keyboardist Glenn Tucker). She also experiments with different styles, and the recording showcases the full dynamic spectrum— from funky rock to groovy folk, with Battaglia’s sandy-edged, evocative voice and soaring melodies tying it all together.

Sacramento-based Bruce Spencer produced the 10-song album and brought with

him a wealth of experience as a drummer who has worked with artists ranging from Jackie Greene to Wynonna Judd.

“Recording this album with Bruce Spencer was a blessing,” Battaglia said.

“He understood my music in such a way that I was able to feel comfortable giving him a lot of artistic freedom. He really put his heart and soul into the project.”

In addition to Asher, the album features contributions from Spencer and his band, The 77s (which includes guitarist/ vocalist Michael Roe and bassist Mark Harmon), among many other guest players, including keyboardist Roger Smith (Tower of Power, Dave Matthews Band).

With the album done, Battaglia said she’s looking forward to getting on stage with the group and sharing the songs live. “The live performance is where it’s at for me,” she said. “There’s nothing like the feeling of playing your heart out up there. And after more than five decades of concertizing and recording, he has plenty of both! In fact, the event was half music and half stories, with the latter eliciting a lot of laughter from the crowd.

Now 73, Hammond described how he began his career 50 years ago, just when interest in countryblues was whetted by the discovery that many of the men whose music he and his fellow young acolytes admired and emulated were still around. Hammond shared how he and some of his peers went down to Chicago’s Maxwell Street to see their idols in action.

And so it went: an amusing, relevant account of the song he was going to play and then a stunning version of it, especially when he picked up his National “resonator” guitar and treated us to some magnificent slide-guitar work. His harmonica playing was another

THE BIG ROOM story, as most of the time I found his screeching destroyed the delicate mood his guitar playing had so eloquently established. As, for example, on his own “Heartache Blues” where, after lamenting his woman’s behavior (“She’s so mean and evil”), his smoke alarmstyle harmonica almost ruined that song—and others—for me.

As a devotee of country-blues, Hammond’s focus on Robert Johnson is truly noteworthy (no pun intended), and his heartfelt rendition of Johnson’s “Come on in My Kitchen” (“’cause it’s goin’ to be rainin’ outdoors”) was a fine tribute to the man whose heart-wrenching songs of love and betrayal have fascinated generations of blues lovers. Among the many stories Hammond related was this gem that occurred during his performance at the 1986 Sacramento Blues Festival: He introduced the song “My Time After a While” as being by Buddy Guy (who’d erroneously “stolen”

the songwriting credit) only to be confronted by an irate Bob Geddins, a Bay Area record producer who was in attendance, who shouted at Hammond that he had written the song—which was true.

As much as Hammond thrives on the acoustic country-blues live, the multiple blues-award-winning guitarist has often chosen to play newer material on an electric guitar in the studio with others.

In the 1990s, for example, he recorded with Little Charlie & the Nightcats, and in 2001, he conspired with Tom Waits, who wrote all of the songs for Hammond’s album Wicked Grin.

One of Hammond’s flag-wavers is his rousing, foot-stomping version of Skip James’ “Preachin’ Blues” (“Yes I’m gonna get me religion/I’m gonna join the Baptist Church/You know I wanna be a Baptist preacher/Just so I won’t have to work”) that ended the wellreceived show and led to a brief encore. □

lyrical drama about five sisters growing up in a rural village in northern Turkey.

By the tradition-bound standards by of their elders, these young women Juan-Carlos Selznick are all on the verge of running wild, which, in this case, means they’re in danger of doing permanent damage to their respective reputations and to the honor of their family.

The dramatic stakes are heightened by the fact that the five siblings Mustang are orphans, and so “family” in the Opens Friday, girls’ case means their nasty Uncle Jan. 29. Directed by Erol (Ayberk Pekcan) and their kindDeniz Gamze Ergüven.

Pageant Theatre. ly grandmother (an excellent Nihal rated PG-13. Koldas). As a patriarch by proxy, Erol is both arrogant and abusive.

The grandmother, by pointed contrast, is protective and resourceful, even though very careful to avoid even the smallest sign of transgression against the strictures of traditional propriety.

The film begins with the sisters, fully dressed in school uniforms, cavorting in the surf with some of their male classmates on a very sunny ocean beach. A

neighbor passing by sees something she deems “scandalous,” and she takes her accusation to the village authorities.

Uncle Erol promptly orders that his nieces be confined to the family abode and underlines his point by having bars placed over the windows and doors. And the still-supportive grandmother begins launching every kind of old-fashioned damage control she knows of, including finding suitors to whom the eldest sisters can become engaged—in public and at the earliest possible opportunity.

The girls, of course, have to go along with most of this, but their collective spirit of rebellion has only grown stronger amid the absurdities of their confinement. One of them will refuse her engagement in a particularly dramatic fashion, and all five will have the special exhilaration of engineering an escape from their domestic “jail” and then running away to watch and celebrate at a “women only” soccer match.

Filmmaker/actress Deniz Gamze Ergüven, making her feature-film debut as a director, takes a glancing, evocative, semi-impressionistic approach to the story and its assorted dramatic moments. The two most shocking events in the story occur off-screen, with Ergüven attending instead to the emotional fallout and aftershocks experienced by the sisters and others who are onscreen at the time.

Each of the sisters gets individuated, at least briefly, but a kind of group portraiture (that fledgling spirit of rebellion) prevails. The one real exception to that is Lale, the youngest and scrappiest of the group. She’s also the story’s occasional narrator, just often enough to make her point of view count for a little extra. □

In Brooklyn, Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) comes of age just in time to find herself on the horns of a remarkable dilemma. No sooner has she emigrated from Ireland to the U.S. and started a new life of her own there than she’s called back to Ireland (for the funeral of an older sister who has died young) and begins discovering an alternative “new life” where there was none before. Her dilemma is magnified by the fact of having a very attractive suitor in both places—a wildly devoted working-class Italian American named Tony (Emory Cohen) in Brooklyn and a gentlemanly middle-class lad named Jim (Domhnall Gleeson) in Ireland. But romance is just one aspect in the drama of cultural dynamics that must play out in her emerging sense of selfhood. Novelist/screenwriter Nick Hornby, has adapted Colm Tóibín’s novel and fashioned a comedy/drama that scores points as a coming-of-age tale, as a cultureclash sketch, and as a richly contextualized love story. And director John Crowley presents it all with brisk sensitivity. Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13 —J.C.S.

Daddy’s Home

Will Ferrell plays a stepdad whose efforts to connect with his stepchildren are challenged when the kids’ birth father (Mark Wahlberg) returns to battle for their affections. Cinemark 14. Rated PG-13.

Ice Cube and Kevin Hart are both back in this sequel that now finds the bumbling former security guard (Hart) working as cop but still trying to win the favor of his skeptical bro-in-law, the grizzled detective. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Force Awakens entertains. It’s a fast, funny, noisy super-spectacle. It’s an armchair version of a theme-park thrill ride that aims to excite and soothe at the same time. Beyond that, let me offer some marginal notes: The key newcomers—Daisy Ridley as Rey, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren—all make strong impressions. Ridley has the best role. Isaac does the best acting, but only in the early parts of the story.

The returning veterans—Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill—seem like guest performers on some kind of reunion tour.

They’ve all outgrown their respective characters (including the aging versions they play here), but they’re all good troupers and they gamely play along with the fun. The story provides a pretext for the spectacular visual displays, but the story and visuals get their main dramatic effects from the grand musical score and the orchestration of those larger-than-life sound effects. Take John Williams’ music away and the film begins to lose its sense of vast expansiveness.

Even some of the interior scenes might begin to feel as enclosed and claustrophobic as anything from the cheapie sci-fi of the 1950s. Cinemark 14 and Paradise Cinema 7.

The Revenant

The Revenant is a mighty spectacle; a grueling wilderness adventure; a gritty tall tale that has at least some basis in historical actuality; a snow-filled Western peopled by mountain men, Native Americans, fur trappers and roaming warriors of several sorts. Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a fur-trapping adventurer who undergoes the now-legendary ordeal dramatized, at length and in harsh and intimate detail, in this tumultuous action drama. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman) deploys DiCaprio through long-take action scenes in perilous location settings, with the result that the actor’s physical exploits very nearly become one with those of the character. DiCaprio’s tour-de-force performance is indeed very impressive, but the script’s characterization of Glass feels like a watering-down of the character implicit in his most impassioned actions. The bravura single-take set pieces—Glass’ fight with the bear, Glass struggling to escape detection in the narrow gully of a mountain stream, etc.—are masterfully done, but while it’s fearsomely meticulous with the grim and strenuous details, it’s also sloppy enough to show DiCaprio firing a single-load musket twice without reloading. Not to be too disparaging. After all, Henri spent his youth in the Midwest before fleeing for the Big Pomme and the world beyond, and he still has a soft spot in his heart for the unvarnished, including their obsession with sports—though he is genuinely flummoxed by fromagehead hats.

So, as true-blooded Americans everywhere drink beer and soda and eat all manner of dreadful approximations of food—Doritos and bean dip and little brown wieners on toothpicks—Henri will be in the kitchen, in apron and chef’s hat, glass of Bordeaux in hand, making bread and listening to the soundtrack from Yentl.

Bread. The staff of life. And also where we get our words “companion” and “company”—in ancient Rome, a companio was one with whom you broke bread, or pan. Henri can think of little better

on a winter’s day than homemade bread fresh from the oven, sliced and toasted to a golden brown and slathered with butter and honey.

And bread is much easier to make than you might think.

Following is Henri’s basic foolproof bread recipe, with virtually unlimited possibilities for improvisation and personal touches.

Substitute whole grain for white flour—or use half of each. Throw in some herbs—rosemary, oregano or thyme. Use molasses or honey instead of sugar. Cook it on a flat sheet (for French-style loaves) or in a muffin pan (for rolls) instead of in loaf pans. Sprinkle the top with poppy or sesame seeds.

Flatten the dough before making the loaves, brush with melted butter, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and roll tightly to make cinnamon bread.

Henri’s easy-to-make bread

(no-frills version) Note: While making bread is in fact a five- or six-hour process, only a half hour or so is spent actually preparing the dough. Much of the time is spent waiting. The colder the day, the longer the staff of life takes to rise.

Warm a KitchenAid (or similar style) mixing bowl by filling it with hot water. Empty and add 2 1/2 cups lukewarm water, into which, dissolve 2 tablespoons yeast using beater attachment. (The yeast

will go dormant if the water’s too cold, die if it’s too hot.) Add 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon salt. Add 3 cups flour and beat until smooth. Replace beater with dough hook, add 4 more cups flour, and knead until dough doesn’t stick to your fingers. (If you’re not using a dough hook, knead by hand on a lightly floured, flat surface or cookie sheet.)

Remove from mixing bowl and place in a large, lightly buttered bowl, cover with clean dry dish towel and allow to rise until doubled in size—one to three hours. Punch it down and then let rise again to same size.

Remove from bowl, divide dough in half and shape each to fit into a loaf pan, rolling underside into itself and spanking the top (méchant pain!) to remove air bubbles. Place upside down in lightly oiled loaf pans, then roll back right-side up (this is to lightly coat with oil what will be the crust).

Allow to double in size one more time, and then cook for about 20 minutes in preheated oven at 400 degrees, or until tops are golden brown. To see if it’s done all the way through, thump the top with your knuckle. It should sound hollow.

Brush butter or margarine on crust and allow to cool. Slice and enjoy. □

IN THE MIX Convex Nym Loci records Convex, the third album from San Francisco-based producer Nym, whose more well-known knob-fiddling contemporaries include Pretty Lights, Bonobo and Little People, is an obscure trip-hop gem. Headnodding, pensive and mostly instrumental, Convex recalls Little People’s 2006 album, Mickey Mouse Operation, and it falls right in line with the rest of Nym’s excellent catalog (see 2013’s Trembling in the Stone and 2011’s Warm Blooded Lizard). The record sounds fussed over and immaculate, from the crisply captured drums to the lush string and horn arrangements. Odd samples of old-timey cinema pop up. Several of the tracks, including the dreamy soundscapes in “Sleep” and “Come Back,” have a world-music flavor.

And as with most of Nym’s music, many of the impressible melodies on Convex are delivered by female vocalists. See, for example, the Orienttinged “Wavey Blue,” featuring Spherelet. Another clear highlight is “Well Tempered,” built entirely around a mesmerizing orchestral loop.

Listening through headphones is candy for the ears.

Green Arrow: Deluxe Edition Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino DC Comics Jeff Lemire’s (Sweet Tooth, Trillium) run with Green Arrow brings the archer’s comic exploits in line with The CW’s popular series Arrow. These 20 collected issues share subtle similarities with the TV series—the importance of the island to the hero’s backstory, the inclusion of John Diggle and the costume and arrow design of artist Andrea Sorrentino (Old Man Logan)—enough to suggest a shared universe without being a rerun.

Lemire’s story nicely builds a unique world for Green Arrow, one of ancient warring clans, familial ties and relics and symbols. The writer also highlights the correlation between the spoiled playboy Oliver Queen and his selfish superhero alter-ego in a way that has consequences for both his Queen and Arrow personae, giving the mask some human depth. The story is engaging, and Sorrentino’s art deftly suggests our heroes’ youth without making them look childish. Plus, Lemire makes trick arrows cool again.

The Life and Death of Paul McCartney (1942-1966)

Nicholas Kollerstrom Moon rock Books I have been happily singing and playing Beatles songs on the guitar for 40 years now. So when Internet rumors resurfaced that Paul McCartney died and was replaced in 1966 with a look-alike, I had to examine it—if only to put it to rest. However, after seven books and 30 hours of YouTube, I was unable to do so. The best “objective” book I found is The Life and Death of Paul McCartney (1942-1966): A Very English Mystery by Nicholas Kollerstrom. For me, among about 30 intriguing factoids in the book—clues on album covers, hidden messages in song lyrics—the clincher is the photographic forensics done by an Italian team in 2009, which concluded that the post-1966 Paul is 2 inches taller, has a longer and narrower face, different teeth and has had plastic surgery over the years. With pupil distance measured, the faces don’t seem to match at all (see comparisons at the Paul Really Is Dead site and judge for yourself: bit.ly/1hMSPRz). No wonder they stopped touring.

Perfect Sound forever This Friday, Jan. 29, scott Kannberg, co-founder of indie-rock godfathers Pavement, is playing a show at duffy’s Tavern with his current project, spiral stairs, and the show is being promoted as Kannberg’s first time playing in Chico since Pavement sneaked into town back in its heyday to play at the same downtown bar in 1992. And the story of that show also happens to be one of the defining stories of arts dEVo’s life—one that I’ve told in these pages before (Nov. 24, 2011) and reprinted below to get you excited for what promises to be another fun show—with locals donald Beaman & The spirit Molecules and The Empty Gate opening (find “Arts DEVO” on Facebook for more photographic evidence): The story starts on Sept. 24, 1992, with me and my Chico crew road-tripping to see one-time indie kings Pavement open for sonic youth at The Warfield in San Francisco. It was Sonic Youth’s Dirty tour, and Pavement was riding high on the wave Scott Kannberg at Duffy’s Whispering of praise following the release of its debut Clam Room, 1992. full-length, the nonpareil Slanted and Enchanted. If the story ended right there, just with witnessing those two bands at the height of their powers on the same night, it would rank as one of the best moments of my life so far. But it didn’t end there.

While standing around in the upstairs bar between bands, Pavement’s then-drummer, Gary young, shuffled by and we somehow summoned the courage to stop him and slobber on about how much he ruled the universe. Before letting him go, one of my indie-rockin’ cohorts of the era, sean Harrasser (leader of such notable Chico groups as Harvester and [Western divide]), tore out a personal check—which had his contact information printed on the front—handed it to Young and said something along the lines of, “If you ever want to play Chico, call and we’ll set it up.”

And, a few days later, while sitting around Pavement at Duffy’s, 1992.

Harrasser’s apartment, Pavement frontman steve Malkmus did call. A date and an insanely reasonable monetary arrangement were proposed, and on Oct. 11, 1992—a couple weeks after the S.F. show—we hosted our favorite band in the world at the Whispering Clam Room (the cozy performance venue that used to be connected to Duffy’s Tavern, in the space now occupied by Melody Records). And, to add to the indie-gasm, both of our bands— Harrasser’s disaster scrapbook and my Pinecone, playing its first show ever (!)—got to open … for Pavement!

Needless to say, that was about the most DIY-affirming experience a 22-yearold music nerd could possibly have. And if I include the fact that the future Mrs. dEVo and I attended the show together and were engaged one month later, that fall included the two catalysts for basically everything that’s happened in my life since.
