Drought and migration For four years the world has witnessed the increasingly horrific civil war

in Syria, during which some 240,000 people have died, 4 million have fled the country and 7 million have lost their homes. Now thousands of Syrian refugees are swarming across Europe, seeking asylum and safety.

There is an inclination to believe this mass migration is entirely the product of the civil war, and certainly that war is its proximate cause. But, as Symbolia magazine has pointed out, it’s important to remember that the unrest in Syria had its origins in a devastating drought that lasted five years, from 2006 to 2011, and affected half the country.

Syria, of course, had experienced droughts before. But this one was of an intensity and duration that went well beyond normal fluctuations.

Scientists say it resulted from climate change.

Nearly 1.5 million rural villagers lost their livelihoods and crowded into the cities. The kleptocratic regime of dictator Bashar al-Assad did little to help them. In the southern city of Daraa, teenagers taking their cues from their Arab Spring counterparts in Egypt and Tunisia painted anti-Assad political slogans on a wall. Fifteen boys were arrested and tortured. Then, when hundreds of people demonstrated outside the governor’s house, government forces fired on them, killing three.

This was the precipitating event. Protests broke out in other cities, and militias began to form. The war was on.

The immediate lesson here is this: When civic instability combines with climate change, as is occurring in Syria and elsewhere, chaos can result.

Scientists long have warned of the destabilizing impacts of climate change, and the resultant mass migrations that can and will result.

We’re seeing it today in Syria. Tomorrow it could be Bangladesh or Pakistan, India or Mexico. Are we prepared? Not even close. Meanwhile, we continue to spew greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. □

Shifting the burden to Oroville W

ith passage of the sweeping and unconsti-

tutional anti-homeless statute—the Offenses Against Waterways and Public Property ordinance— Chico seeks to establish itself as Butte County’s privileged “homeless free zone.”

Under this new law, street people are further deprived of the right to sleep on public land (9.50.020), their possessions are subject to seizure under a poorly defined prohibition on “storage” (9.20.050) and private alcoves and entrances to churches and other buildings are now under the control of the police by (9.44.018). (Among other issues: Patrick Newman a prohibition on the possession of the author is a longclean needles, which likely will time Chico resident. invite the reuse of contaminated needles—a public health disaster.)

According to the U.S. Justice Department, depriving people of access to resting places is a violation of the Eighth Amendment. Depriving people of their possessions and subjecting them to unreasonable searches are both violations of the Fourth Amendment. And, how can the city of Chico 4

cite people on private property without a clear violation of trespassing laws—i.e., refusal to leave when requested?

Of course, the goal of this exercise is to further criminalize homelessness and make life on the streets of Chico unbearable. To this end, we cite people multiple times for small offenses like sleeping—aka camping. When the homeless fail to pay fines and fail to appear, they are arrested and incarcerated on warrants. Our present council—Councilwoman Tami Ritter excepted—is willing to shred our civil rights to achieve higher incarceration rates. Why? The right wing real estate interests and their sympathizers are bent on remaking Chico as Butte County’s more profitable Malibu as they assume Oroville will play the role of South Los Angeles.

Oroville already has more than three times the homeless population of Chico; why not drive them all into the south county? In fact, why not literally “drive” them to Butte County Jail—which is within walking distance of Oroville’s downtown?

I wonder if the city of Oroville might consider a class action lawsuit, since that city will be forced to absorb the entire regional burden of homelessness—as the consequences of three decades of Reaganomics are felt on our streets. □

Irresponsible pandering Rep. Doug LaMalfa and the rest of his Republican compadres in the

“Do Nothing Congress” are at it again. Last week, they pandered to the most ignorant members of their base by passing legislation to defund Planned Parenthood of America for a year. Predictably, LaMalfa was among the dozens of co-sponsors of the ridiculous bill.

This, of course, is in response to the deceptively edited undercover videos created by anti-abortion activists to discredit the good work of this 80-year-old nonprofit, and despite the fact that there is no evidence that the organization “sold baby parts,” as the propagandists would have the public believe. What’s more, no federal dollars—none, zero—pay for general abortion services. That’s illegal, in fact.

So what will defunding the organization do?

Well, for starters, it would eliminate family-planning education and basic reproductive health care for hundreds of thousands of Americans, primarily lowincome and rural residents, those who rely on the organization for contraception, the very thing they need to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Then there are the other services Planned Parenthood provides to its patients—tests and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, and cancer screenings, for example.

In short, the Republicans’ effort is an attack on women’s rights. All to secure votes from their radical base. What’s more, because Senate Democrats have enough votes to block the House bill and President Obama would otherwise veto it, if funding is included in a federal spending bill, certain Republican senators—namely presidential candidates Ted Cruz and Rand Paul—appear willing to withhold votes and force another government shutdown. (Sept. 30 is the deadline to pass the budget.)

That’s just the sort of brinkmanship the ultra-conservatives have embraced in recent years and the reason for the party’s tarnished image. Enough of this irresponsible pandering. The welfare of American citizens is at stake. □

rookie moves One of these days I’d like to take to this space without having the urge to rip somebody a new one. Today is not one of those days.

I still have a bad taste in my mouth from tuning into last week’s City Council meeting, and once again watching our representatives—six out of seven of them—take the easy road when it comes to homelessness by essentially criminalizing it. In a twisted way, it was entertaining seeing the conservatives in particular rally behind the so-called Offenses Against Waterways and Public Property ordinance, and to couch the issue as an environmental one. It reminded me how the anti-marijuana right-wingers on the county Board of Supervisors a few years back suddenly took an interest in nature during their battle against the ills of growing reefer.

What a joke.

But the biggest jokes of the night were rookie Councilmembers Reanette Fillmer and Andrew Coolidge, who gave some stunningly insensitive and patronizing speeches while rationalizing their aye votes on the matter.

Fillmer actually claimed to have been “teetering” on whether to support it. She then told an anecdote about having recently visited San Francisco—more than three hours from Chico—as justification for her vote. “I stepped in someone’s shit, and that pretty much threw me over the top on this ordinance,” she said. She went on to explain how she’d previously laughed off that same thing happening to people in Chico. “And now I need a new pair of shoes, so in saying that, I support the ordinance,” she continued.

Number one, what’s up with cursing from the dais? I mean, at least when Vice Mayor Sean Morgan dropped the F-bomb during a meeting years ago, we heard it only because he made the mistake of forgetting his mic was on. Number two, how incredibly callous to talk about needing a new pair of shoes during discussions about people who have no roof over their heads, let alone a single pair of decent shoes.

Then there’s Coolidge, who gave a rambling speech about how the city, state and federal governments weren’t going to help solve homelessness. He implored members of the community to volunteer—“Do something, keep doing something till it hurts, over and over and over again.” Hurts. He actually said hurts.

Coolidge then had the audacity to make the issue about himself, asking what he was supposed to tell the mom who calls him and tells him that a homeless person defecated within the sight of her children as they walked through the park.

Good question. Here’s his answer: Tell them homeless people are pooping outdoors because the city won’t open its restrooms since elected leaders such as yourself don’t think it’s a priority to provide the down-and-out with sanitary places to relieve themselves.

If the council doesn’t want people defecating in public spaces, it needs to direct city staff to open the public restrooms. For crying out loud, these are the same city leaders who recently voted to open the gates of Bidwell Park.

I’d think at least Fillmer could get on board with that. After all, I’d hate for her to have to buy another pair of new shoes.

Once, he was handcuffed and thrown into jail. This wasn’t rewarding for him; he died by suicide shortly thereafter. Please join us on Oct. 10 at City Plaza to prevent suicide and break the stigma surrounding mental illness. Let’s support, not blame or dismiss, each other. Education must start here and now.

There is hope that residents, native plants and wildfire can coexist. There are now five nationally recognized “Firewise” communities in Butte County: Forest Ranch, Forbestown, Merry Mountain, Berry Creek and Yankee Hill/Concow. These communities are undertaking a variety of programs and projects to improve collaboration between Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, other large landowners and residents.

The Butte County Fire Safe Council serves as a nonprofit grassroots community organization to assist in building resiliency to wildfire across the landscape.

Residents can request a free home visit from the Fire Safe Council in which native plants, fire-wise landscaping, structure ignitability and evacuation preparedness are all discussed. ‘Grow up, N&R!’ Re “So much for transparency” (Editorial, Sept. 17): Give me a break. The progressive, liberal City Council spent Chico’s finances damn near into bankruptcy. You have the audacity to demand the transparency of this current council, when you failed miserably to identify those who ordered monies moved by the past city finance manager. You, the Chico News & Review, failed miserably to identify who recommended the finance manager be given a job in Temecula as their finance manager while leaving Chico in such disrepair from the same lady.

Your paper is only interested in ad revenues and not the truth.

You tell young people how to think, but you never use your own brains to enhance the transparency owed to us by our elected officials. If it doesn’t fit your narrative. Hmmm.

Grow up, News & Review. Quit trying to posture yourselves as the

‘Only in America’ Re “Sharing a note of thanks” (Letters, by Bill Mash, Sept. 17): Bill Mash should get his facts straight before bragging about helping the homeless. Only he would believe the kids he took in were “kicked to the curb.” They probably were runaways, because they did not want to follow rules of the home they got “kicked out of.”

Only in America will kids complain about the roof over their heads, being provided to them by tax-paying adults, because they don’t like the rules, don’t want to do their part to help with chores, or stay in school to better themselves, get jobs, etc. Because, in America, we can get a handout playing the “pity me” game.

Where’s the compassion?

I run the Chico Cannabis Club.

I see pain all the time in the members of the club. Every day I see people living who want to die. How a society cannot allow someone to stop the extreme pain they are in—and that is only going to get worse—is beyond me. Life is no life when you are in pain all the time. A debilitating disease faced by one of your family members can take its toll on everyone, not just the subject of pain. A healthy outlook for the nation is to stop the pain for everyone with dignity. Unless you like to see people suffer, this seems to be the most compassionate road for a civil society.

Chico State President Paul Zingg, 70, has no reservations about retiring this spring. He’s led the university since 2004.

On Oct. 5, Beth Lamberson will take over as general manager of North State Public Radio to oversee the station’s news, engineering, business and fundraising operations.

Lamberson worked as general manager and development director for KSUT Public Radio in Durango, Colo., for 18 years and holds a master’s degree in political science from the University of Colorado at Denver. Her appointment comes about a year after former GM Brian Terhorst retired to address ongoing medical issues, said Marc Albert, a reporter for NSPR. To fill the void, Stephen Cummins, director of public events at Chico State, served as interim general manager, according to a university press release.

“I know North State Public Radio is a true amenity for the region and I am proud to be joining the team,” Lamberson said.

About 500 volunteers—a record number— helped pull trash out of waterways during Butte Environmental Council’s annual Bidwell Park & Chico Creeks Cleanup on Saturday (Sept. 19).

The volunteers collected an estimated 21,547 pounds of trash and recycling, said BEC Executive Director Robyn DiFalco. That figure is down from last year’s record total of about 30 tons of material, but DiFalco said that’s likely because “the community has been chipping away at this leading up to the big event” with smaller cleanups. “We also didn’t get everything that’s out there,” she added. “We never do.”

STONE GOES GHOSTBUSTIN’

If you see someone riding one bike while pushing another—aka “ghostriding”—who ya gonna call? The Chico police, Chico City Councilman Randall Stone hopes.

At the Sept. 15 City Council meeting, Stone (pictured) requested the council agendize discussions regarding three new ordinances he’s proposing. In addition to an ordinance banning ghostriding, Stone wants to see new rules in place to disallow the dismantling of bicycles in public and regulate downtown parking between 2 and 7 a.m.

“A ghostriding ordinance would allow us to stop people and check ownership,” Stone said in a phone interview Tuesday. “The ultimate goal would be to get bicycles back into their rightful owners’ hands. It could also help people become more aware of registration regulations, and make them more likely to comply.”

The council unanimously agreed to discuss Stone’s ideas at a future meeting.

Plenty has changed for the better during Zingg’s tenure as president, he says. The party scene, for instance, has chilled out significantly.

But all isn’t well on campus, and Zingg’s time at the helm is short. In light of a series of serious health complications, he’s retiring next spring. And upon reflecting on his tenure’s accomplishments and outlining what he hopes to see from his successor, Zingg recognizes that he isn’t retired yet—he still has a job to do. In fact, dissatisfied Chico State employees are maintaining pressure on administration and calling specifically on Zingg to address their concerns before he retires.

In June, Zingg returned to Kendall Hall after a lengthy medical leave during which he underwent heart bypass surgery,

was rehospitalized six weeks later due to a staph infection, then returned again to remove two kidney stones—likely a consequence of his various medications. It was an arduous six months for his family, including his wife and two step-daughters.

And while Zingg didn’t get specific, he mentioned “ongoing health issues” and that he will take blood-pressure medication for the rest of his life.

So even while he’s thrilled by the energy of 4,800 new students on campus this fall, the 70-year-old concedes that the weight of responsibility that comes with running “a city of 20,000 people”—and making decisions that invariably are unpopular with some campus factions—has taken its toll over the years. He believes the stress contributed to his hospitalization. He has no reservations about retirement.

In the meantime, Chico State employees

have concerns they want him to address.

That was apparent on Aug. 27 during a forum hosted by Chico State’s Academic Senate in which several hundred staff, faculty and administrators decried low wages, burdensome workloads, bullying and a lack of transparency from management.

“There’s a feeling among staff and faculty that the campus culture in general is not good,” said Jessica Verardi, president of the Chico chapter of the CSU Employees’ Union, during a recent phone

interview. On Friday (Sept. 18), the union hosted a rally attended by 175 people on campus that marched through Kendall Hall, intending to keep pressure on as the university prepares to transition between presidents.

“We want to make sure the administration is still paying attention, not letting this go by the wayside in this last year before President Zingg retires,” Verardi said.

Administration hasn’t been responsive to the employees “in a way that shows things are getting better. They tell us, ‘Look at what we did.’”

For instance, Zingg touts his recently unveiled multiphase equity plan, intended to boost compensation for staff and faculty over several years, but Verardi says only about 10 percent of staff have gotten raises thus far.

“When we hear that salaries are improving, but it’s such a small group of people getting increases—while management and administration continue to get increases every year—it’s very frustrating for staff,” she said.

Zingg says the equity plan “is the most generous and comprehensive in the entire CSU system” and hopes the university’s next president will continue to invest in employees. But that will be out of his hands, he admits.

“My job this year is to try to set the table so that whoever the new president is

can take this institution forward,” Zingg said. “That’s difficult. I can’t tell the next person what to do. But I can set the table in a way that will make them want to continue certain things.”

For example, Zingg hopes the next president recognizes the importance of diversity in the campus community, from students and administration to professors and groundskeepers. During his tenure, student diversity has risen from 18 percent nonwhite students in 2004 to 40 percent today, Zingg said. Far less progress has been made in attracting ethnically and racially diverse instructors, he acknowledges, partly due to intense competition for, say, a black history professor.

“Students expect to see a commitment to diversity reflected in the faculty and staff,” he said. “It’s a ‘walking the talk’ challenge.”

Managing enrollment is another difficult arena, he said. The trend throughout the 23-campus CSU system is growth, but that’s not always possible in a community already impacted by a surge of students.

“But we have to be very conscious about growth and what it means to our community,” Zingg said. “We’re not L.A. State; they could grow 10,000 students and nobody would notice. We grow by 200 students and the community notices the parking, the congestion, more crowds, more student behavior issues.”

Speaking of student behavior, Zingg

shares the widely held observation that Chico isn’t as wild as it was in years or decades past, though there are lingering traces of the unsavory reputation that’s haunted Chico State since Playboy ranked it the No. 1 party school in 1987.

This Labor Day, for instance, was a “nonevent” compared with the boozefueled floats that used to draw 20,000 people to the Sacramento River, he said.

And in spring, César Chávez Day was much tamer, as many students chose to honor the holiday through community service “rather than putting on a fake mustache and sombrero and drinking tequila,” Zingg said.

Turning the party culture around started with the students themselves, Zingg said, as with every aspect of the university.

“The reason we’re all here is students,” he said. “The mission we have as a campus fundamentally begins with student success, student support and student learning. I think sometimes folks are distracted from that.” □

All about Sites Politicians pat backs, tout benefits of new North State reservoir project anzanita Place was packed to the brim Tuesday night with local residents pasM sionate about either the future construction

of Sites Reservoir, planned near Maxwell, or its demise. They were there attending a meeting called by local representatives and water leaders, whose agenda was clear: Sites rules.

The panel made a compelling case for the Sites project, which has been studied since Eisenhower was in the White House. It calls for the construction of a reservoir that could hold up to 1.8 million acre-feet of water, which would come from winter streams that flow off the Sacramento River. They touted it as a way to “take the target off our water rights” and a solution to environmental issues as well as increased water needs in the North State. In particular, they focused on the drought—“Have we not had previous droughts? I’ve farmed through three of them and this one’s the worst. There will be more,” Sen. Jim Nielsen told the crowd.

“It will make us much more waterresilient in the future,” said Assemblyman James Gallagher.

The meeting, which was standing-roomonly, was filled mostly with backers of the reservoir, so for the most part the panel was preaching to the choir. Nielsen and Gallagher were joined by Congressman Doug LaMalfa and three representatives from the water community: David Guy, president of the Northern California Water Association; Thad Bettner,

general manager of the Glenn-Colusa Irrigation District; and Jim Watson, general manager of the Sites Reservoir Joint Powers Authority. They took turns complimenting each other and touting the benefits of the project, including keeping water rights in the North State and ensuring the preservation of national wildlife areas and endangered species like salmon.

Nielsen boomed onto the stage with a powerful story about having been in former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s office, frustrated about water legislation that didn’t end up passing because the other politicians in the room were too concerned about the upcoming election.

“I said, ‘Don’t you understand this is not about now? It’s about our grandchildren.’

You are here because you care about your grandchildren,” he said to applause. “We cannot conserve our way into the future. That

alone is not the answer.”

That may well be true, but it didn’t convince a portion of the audience that remained skeptical of the reservoir plan. After the presentation, which included maps and data provided by the water experts, they opened it up for questions. Some opponents focused on evaporation rates—it’s been suggested that up to 30 percent of the initial fill amount will evaporate due to high temperatures and shallow waters—while others zoned in on current and future groundwater levels, cost and environmental repercussions.

“The exploitation of groundwater by the Glenn-Colusa water district was almost denied at the meeting,” said Jim Brobeck, of nonprofit water advocacy group AquAlliance.

“We think that’s really important. Sites is at least 10 years in the future. This is going on now.”

Brobeck was referring to the current ongoing environmental review of adding five wells—the district holds five already—and the regular practice of selling water to other districts farther south.

He also mentioned a lack of adequate review of the Sites project, including what minerals might be present that could leech into the water once a reservoir is built.

“They kept mentioning that Sites has been reviewed for 50 years. Well, why hasn’t it been built? Because it’s not feasible,” he said.

“They want the public to support it a year before the public even has all the information about what it entails. People were supporting it last night but they didn’t even know what they were talking about.”

Tire-slashing video evidence fell through cracks in online reporting system

local couple believe they’ve held the key to solving a spate of tire Aslashings that have baffled their neighbors and law enforcement, but efforts to submit the evidence were ignored for months by the Chico Police Department.

Lindy Carter and Jeff Kelly woke up July 10 to find all of the tires on three separate vehicles slashed. The couple have two security cameras set up in their driveway, and video from the previous evening clearly shows two vehicles passing the house several times before a man emerges to slash the tires.

Carter said she called police the following day and was told to file an online report through the Coplogic system adopted by the CPD at the beginning of 2014— ostensibly to cut down on officer time spent dealing with property crimes—but a promised follow-up call from an officer never came.

Carter said both she and Kelly called multiple times over the next several weeks, and were still never contacted.

“At some point we gave up ... and started thinking about finding a new place to live,” Carter said, adding that that wasn’t the only time they’ve been victimized by crime recently. In the last year, groceries were stolen out of their backyard, water was poured into the gas tank of one vehicle, and the cameras were installed after Kelly’s truck was stolen.

The couple didn’t realize tire slashings had reached epidemic proportions in an adjacent neighborhood—with dozens of instances reported to police and on social media/virtual neighborhood watch site Nextdoor.com since July 16— until it was reported by CN&R (see “Slashing spree,” Newslines, Sept. 17). Carter said she was particularly shocked to read that police had no leads, no eye witness or video accounts, and that law enforcement and Chico City Councilman Randall Stone suspect members of the home-

less population to be perpetrating the vandalism.

“I’m no fan of the homeless, but the people in our video are driving two vehicles and definitely don’t appear to be homeless,” she said.

Carter said it cost more than $1,000 per car to replace the tires, not counting towing fees, and that insurance helped only with one of the vehicles. She said they have yet to fix the last set of tires because of the cost.

Carter posted the videos to YouTube after the article came out, and was contacted by interim Lt. Rob Merrifield last week: “He apologized and admitted they’d messed up,” she said.

Sgt. Scott Zuschin, who oversees

the area where the bulk of the slashings have occurred, confirmed that Merrifield contacted Carter.

He said his department now has the videos, are attempting to identify the suspects, and that Carter and

Kelly will be contacted by members of the CPD’s recently revived TARGET team in the next few days.

“It definitely slipped through the cracks,” Zuschin said of the video evidence and report, “and that’s the unfortunate result of understaffing combined with the Coplogic online reporting system.

We get a great deal of video and evidence submitted online, and it’s just impossible to follow up on every single thing we get.”

Zuschin explained the department’s records department checks the online reports once a week, and it can take up to two more days for them to be processed and sent to an on-duty desk sergeant.

Which crimes are addressed is then dependent on how many officers are available that day. He also said the CPD’s computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system is more than 20 years old and badly in need of an upgrade, which negatively affects

the department’s ability to collect, analyze and process data from the online reports.

“We have a system for the online reports in place, but we have some staffing holes that slow it down,” he said. “We’re getting there, but for the moment we’re working with what we have.”

The last reported slashing Zuschin was aware of was on Sept. 14.

Zuschin also said that Carter and

Kelly’s evidence, though significant, may not be the proverbial smoking gun: “That’s just one incident, and we don’t know if that incident is connected to any of the others,” he said.

In a phone interview Tuesday (Sept. 22), Stone said he doesn’t believe the people who slashed Carter and Kelly’s tires are responsible for the other crimes.

“I’m no crime analyst, but the M.O.’s are significantly different,”

he said of the videotaped slashing versus the other incidents, noting many of the other crimes only target one vehicle at each property, and take place between midnight and 5 a.m. (The couple’s tires were slashed earlier in the evening).

“The tires in the video are very methodically slashed, while the other crimes seem more random and driven by opportunity.”

Carter believes the video is significant, and said that had the CPD addressed it earlier—her report came a week before other reported slashings started—it might have saved her neighbors big bucks. She also expressed some concern.

“Someone came into our backyard and took our groceries and into our driveway and slashed our tires, and nothing’s been done,” she said. “Do we wait for someone to come in the house and slash our throats?”

Children exposed to indoor insecticides are at increased risk of developing certain cancers, according to a review of 16 studies on children exposed to the chemicals. The researchers compared 7,400 cancer cases with 9,437 healthy control subjects.

The analysis, published in the journal Pediatrics, involved pesticides used by professional pest control services, indoor flea foggers, flea and tick collars for pets and a host of roach and ant sprays, according to The New York Times. Exposure increased risk of leukemia by 47 percent and lymphoma by 43 percent, while exposure to outdoor pesticides increased risk of brain tumors by 26 percent.

The study’s authors emphasized that the relative increases in risk are for uncommon diseases and can be managed “as long as parents think, before using pesticides, about better ways to make a house pest-proof or pest-free.”

While last year’s flu vaccine was mostly ineffective, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says this year’s version should work better.

Last flu season the CDC was taken off guard as the dominant flu strain circulating in the U.S. mutated after the vaccine was formulated, according to NPR.org. While flu vaccines typically are effective 50 percent to 60 percent of the time, last year’s vaccine was effective for only 13 percent of people who got inoculated.

But as flu season ramps up—it can last from October to May—the most common strains currently making nationwide rounds match this year’s vaccine, the CDC says. Director Thomas Friedland encouraged people to get vaccinated because “that’s the best way to protect yourself, your family and your community against flu.”

SunShine Vitamin and dementia

A study of nearly 400 elderly people in the North State concluded that Vitamin D deficiency is strongly tied to cognitive decline and impaired performance associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Researchers from UC Davis and Rutgers University found that people with low Vitamin D decline at a rate three times faster than those with sufficient levels, according to a UC Davis press release.

The authors said that black and Hispanic people, in particular, should consider low Vitamin D a greater risk factor for dementia, since sunshine is the most plentiful source of Vitamin D and dark-skinned individuals are less able to absorb the nutrient.

doo—so closely I could feel the deepest tones in my chest. Over the next hour or so, the didgeridoo was complemented by singing bowls, rattles and other instruments.

Emiliano Jimenez-Cornejo—the guy on the other end of the didgeridoo—was leading the sound healing session at the Yoga Center of Chico. He says that he avoids using instruments like guitar, which listeners absorb on an intellectual, rather than physical, level. So that feeling deep in my chest was part of the point.

“The instruments I use produce really low vibrations; you can feel the sound,” he

said. “Even though the didgeridoo can play a melody, it has a more trance-y quality.”

Chico Sound Healing sessions, which Jimenez-Cornejo offers for groups—of usually at least 10 people—at rotating venues and privately at his home by appointment, have a hypnotic effect. His goal is for participants to “relax mindfully,” he says. As in, not dozing or letting thoughts wander to work, relationships or solving problems, but rather continually checking in on the body, releasing tension and otherwise focusing only on the sounds.

Jimenez-Cornejo was born and raised in

Argentina, and while he speaks clear and articulate English, he has a distinct accent.

His path to Chico began several years ago when he met Abigail Rasmussen, current co-owner of Live Life Juice Co., while on vacation in Hawaii. Originally intending to stay for a few months, the couple ended up living together there for nearly a year, and then moved to Argentina so JimenezCornejo could continue pursuing his edu-

cation in economics. They came to Chico a little more than two years ago.

Though he plays a wide array of exotic instruments, Jimenez-Cornejo doesn’t consider himself a musician. He started playing guitar at age 15 and understands the nature of harmonic structures and scales, but he’s received very little formal training.

It was a years-long process to become a sound healer. He first saw a didgeridoo played at a fair in Argentina, and was drawn to the instrument simply because it sounded cool. A few months later, he bought one and began playing it without knowing anything about its therapeutic applications. It took several years before he appreciated the instrument’s relaxing effects.

“I always assumed it was relaxing because of the breathing,” he said. “Then I realized it happened to other people in the room; it was like, hypnotic. Then I started experimenting with Abby, friends and famHEALTHLINES c o n t i n u e d

Eventually, he began incorporating singing bowls and a gong. In 2010, he started conducting group therapy sessions in Argentina.

The sounds are improvised but always have intention, JimenezCornejo said. He considers a session an hour-long composition with peaks and valleys of intensity. “I’m very careful about every little detail,� he said.

He’s just as particular about what participants don’t hear. He wears socks so he can move around the room soundlessly, taking his time to interact fluidly with different instruments. Otherwise, he might break the spell. “I want the sound to be a presence without me,� he said. “If something falls, it immediately brings you back into the room and what I’m doing.�

Before our session began, I turned to

the older gentleman on my left and asked him whether he uses sound healing to treat a specific condition.

He shook his head. “I just get an intense feeling of well-being,� he said. “It takes me to a place I can’t get to any other way.�

To kick off the session, Jimenez-Cornejo led the three of us in 15 minutes of deep breathing exercises to get everyone, including himself, in a similar state of mind.

By contrast, he’ll skip the breathing exercises and jump right into making sounds during a oneon-one session because “I can connect with them right away. Just by seeing how a person moves and talks, it gives you an idea of how you’re going to approach the session. “If you have a very nervous person, someone who is stressed and tense, you don’t want to give them the impression of being super relaxed,� he continued. “There will be resistance. You try to match their energy level and where they are in that moment, so the music starts with that tension and they can identify with the sound. They let the music come in, and then you slowly start bringing it down.�

He instructed us to lie on our backs, close our eyes and resist the urge to turn around and watch him. It was sound advice as Jimenez-Cornejo proceeded to make way more noise than I expected from one musician. At one point I envisioned him playing the crystal singing bowls with his toes.

Setting the metronome was a heartbeat played through a small set of speakers. The other noises came on gradually, first with the pure, airy singing bowls and then the didgeridoo’s far more intense tones. The music felt mostly unstructured, but at times fell into more rhythmic patterns. (I couldn’t help laughing a little when, unexpectedly, Jimenez-Cornejo shook a rattle a couple inches above my face—but I kept my eyes closed.)

When the last notes rang out and the lights came up, the three of us laid there for about five minutes, stuck in the trance. Then I walked home tension-free, smiling for no apparent reason. â–Ą

attempts to extinguish the fire with water would contaminate the groundwater supply, public officials decided to let the fire burn itself out, which it eventually did …

26 months later.

The following fall, a lightning strike sparked another tire fire less than 30 minutes away from Tracy, in Westley.

That fire was extinguished five weeks later at a cost of over $3 million, but not before causing breathing problems and nosebleeds in area residents and flooding a nearby stream with pyrolysis oil that set the waterway ablaze.

These and other incidents helped spur a concentrated effort by state and county governments to clean up tire dumps, efforts that Butte County Recycling Coordinator Steve Rodowick has helped oversee locally for the past 12 years.

Rodowick said most of the county’s large “legacy” tire dumps, such as one spot south of Oroville where more than 13,000 tires had been left in old mine tailings ponds, have since been cleared with help of a Farm and Ranch Solid Waste Cleanup and Abatement grant program administered by the state’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle).

“What we used to suffer from scofflaw tire haulers has pretty much come to an end, and the legacy dumps have been cleaned up,” Rodowick explained. “What we’re doing now is more of a maintenance situation to address the smaller generators, like shade tree mechanics and people who get new tires and don’t want to pay the nominal disposal fee at the retailer. Our goal is keeping small clusters of tires from becoming larger dump sites.”

To that end, the county coordinates an annual tire amnesty program, the next installment of which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Highway 70 industrial park in Oroville. At the event, which usually draws a lengthy line of vehicles along Feather River Boulevard,

residents are invited to turn in passenger car and light truck tires free of charge.

Tires are accepted on the rim or off, although no oversize, off-road, or semitruck tires over 36 inches will be collected.

Disposal fees are generally $2 at the Neal Road Recycling and Waste Facility, doubled for tires on rims, and slightly higher at commercial tire dealers.

Rodowick said many of the people who make use of the amnesty program are rural property owners who get tires dumped on their land or responsible citizens who collect them from the sides of roads.

He also noted state transportation regulations prohibit the hauling of more than nine waste tires without a waiver from the county Environmental Health Department, and that applications for waivers are available online, at the Public Works office in Oroville, and will be printed in local papers before collection day. With the waiver, people can haul up to 20 tires, and everyone can make multiple trips.

Last year, the amnesty event collected

81.38 tons, or about 6,500 tires.

Rodowick said it’s common to collect 85 to 95 tons each year, and one year it collected 136 tons.

“We usually fill about 10 to 12 28-foot trailers,” Rodowick said, explaining the tires are hauled away

by Sacramento-based company Waste Recovery West Inc. They are then used

for energy generation or refabricated for alternative surfaces such as rubberized asphalt and playground cover.

Loading, unloading and moving that many tires requires some Herculean effort, and Rodowick and a small team of county public works personnel will be assisted this year—as they have in years past—by about two dozen volunteers from the Chico Rugby Foundation and the Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District.

Vector control also has an interest in getting tires out of the natural environment: “When you have piles of tires, or even a single one, they can sit through the winter and collect rainwater, and then make perfect mosquito breeding habitats come spring and summertime,” Rodowick said, noting mosquitoes can carry West Nile virus and other deadly diseases that effect humans and livestock.

“They can also become homes for rodents, snakes and all kinds of other nasty things,” he continued.

In addition to the Farm and Ranch and tire amnesty programs, Rodowick said his department has another tool to ensure that largescale tire dumps remain a memory.

“We also use solid waste code enforcement to audit all the tire dealers and make sure the junk tires they generate end up in a permitted tire end-use facility,” he said. □

How did your cheese make it to the World Cheese Awards?

Valerie: The Milk Advisory Board, which Paul is a member of, takes fees and makes assessments of Paul’s milk. In exchange for those fees, they pay for advertising and promotions in California. So one of the things they do to promote California milk is they will reimburse us for entry fees in different competitions. That is what they did for us in the World Cheese Awards.

What is fromage blanc, and what makes yours special?

as a dairyman, so I found Valerie and we started making cheese.

Valerie: It’s a soft, spreadable cheese. We tell people it’s similar to a cream cheese, but it’s not as sweet. It’s acidic, a bit tangier.

What was interesting in this competition was that in most cases, like the state fair, [where] we won “Best in Division,” the judges provided us with their feedback. There wasn’t any feedback in this case.

But our cows are grass-fed, no grain or corn, no hormones, and our cheese reflects that.

Do you have any plans to expand your business?

Does the creamery produce only cheese?

Paul: I started the dairy because I’m a third-generation dairyman. Around 2000, I began bottling milk and some folks talked me into making Mexican cheese, which is where our first cheese, queso fresco, comes from. I wanted to increase the value of my work and I wasn’t getting anywhere

Valerie: Currently, this is a Grade B dairy and that means we are only able to sell processed cheese. We hope to become a Grade A dairy in the fall, or realistically, this coming spring, and sell our milk to consumers. We would need about 75 milking cows to make that work. Right now, 90 to 100 percent of the milk we collect is used to make cheese.

Paul: It’s a labor of love, and it has been a long, hard road. I would like to get to the point where we are getting a paycheck! We are a small dairy, one of the smallest operating in California, so it’s really low-key.

We strive for quality, not quantity.

You have to make money to be a business, so that’s what we’re going to do.

Naturally, as a journalist, I love a good story. I also have a keen interest in history—whenever I get a chance to dig through old newspaper archives or search the photographs in Meriam Library’s Special Collections, I jump at it. I can get lost in those things quite easily, winding my way down the rabbit hole until reality—usually a deadline—snaps me back into the present.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Gene Stewart, who owns 20 acres of olive orchards in Orland, for this week’s Farm to Table issue, and our discussion meandered a bit, from table olives to Roy Rogers to Stewart’s family roots that run deep in Butte and Glenn counties.

Stewart’s family moved to the area with the ’49ers. They didn’t strike it rich, though, and became teamsters instead, moving cattle all over Northern California. The matriarch of his mother’s side was close to Annie Bidwell, and her brothers were rodeo stars. Roy Rogers came to town and befriended them—Stewart has a photo to prove it.

Stewart’s grandfather moved to the farm where he now lives 110 years ago. “Some of those trees are just as old,” he said. He used to spend summers there, working the orchards, and he decided at the age of 14 that he wanted it to become his life’s work. In 1973, he moved there permanently.

“It’s just like my own little Bidwell Park, the perfect little place if you want to be alone,” he mused.

These days, Stewart still does a lot of the orchard work himself, from serving as foreman to the picking crews he hires—the majority of his crops are table olives, which require hand-picking—to dumping and hauling everything to the Bell-Carter Foods plant in Corning, where they’re processed and canned.

Things certainly have changed, industry-wise, over the years, Stewart told me. For instance, finding good pickers has gotten harder. “In the ’80s, contractors got greedy,” Stewart said. “They started showing up with half a crew instead of a full crew.” The table olive picking season is relatively short—six weeks—and once the fruits turn purple, they’re no longer viable for canning. You can pick a whole lot more olives, faster, with a full crew.

The good news, however, is that Stewart’s business is poised to boom this year with the increase in demand for table olives. Last year, he said, the price was around $800-$900 per ton for Sevillanos, which he grows, and this year it’s closer to $1,300.

How fortunate are we to live literally a few miles from where our food is grown? Sure, not everything we eat comes out of our proverbial backyard. But we do have access to some of the freshest produce in the country. We’re spoiled, and it sure is great.

And to celebrate the folks who toil behind the scenes to grow all of this delicious food fare, the CN&R is presenting our third annual farm-to-table issue.

This year, we talked to some local orchardists and a beekeeper about their operations and the challenges they face and a local scientist charged with aiding them in their endeavors. Next time you sit down to grub, raise a glass to them.

I

f it looks old, it’s because it is. That’s what Lori Noble tells visitors to the marketplace she owns and operates with her husband, Jim, on 40 acres of orchards in Paradise.

Lori’s referencing the building that houses Noble Orchards’ market—built in 1921 by Jim’s grandfather, Perry, as a packing shed—but the phrase applies to other aspects of the operation as well. Like Jim’s rusty 70-year-old Willys Jeep that rumbles through rows of apple, peach, nectarine and pluot trees—or the trees themselves, many of which were planted decades ago. But the most direct link to the past is a blown-up photograph that hangs near the market’s register. Published in 1963 in The Sacramento Bee, it depicts Perry and Jim’s father, Vincent, posing by a box of apples, while Jim, 16 years old and hair waxed and parted to

the side, stands halfway up a ladder behind them. Below is a simple caption reading, “Paradise Applemen.”

Isn’t it surreal, working the same land of his father, and his father’s father? To that, Jim says simply, “The world’s different now.”

The fruits of the Noble family’s labor have been available to locals for nearly a century, but they can’t be found in big-box grocery stores. As a small-time farm, the operation sells almost exclusively from the market on their property and area farmers’ markets, including the Saturday market in Chico. Jim is the farmer; Lori is the saleswoman.

Lori likes a small operation. To her, local and regional distribution makes more sense than trucking produce across the country.

“There are issues we’re going to continue facing in the next few decades,” she said.

“How far do we ship things? What’s reasonable? What are the limitations? Is transportation just insane? Sometimes I think it is.”

Of late, Noble has been selling its fruits to Happy Valley Fresh Fruit Co., a regional distributor based in Shasta County that buys fruit from local growers and sells to schools and other institutions.

“It helps show kids that fresh fruits are available,” Lori said. “We have kids come in and say, ‘We had your apples today at school. I know they were yours—they were really good.’

So they’re learning at 7 or 8 years old what quality is. It’s a different lesson than what we’ve developed.”

Noble Orchards’ apples, especially the popular Pink Lady and Red Delicious varieties, are of high quality. They’re also distinct from what’s grown in the valley heat— apple orchards fare much better in the Ridge’s higher elevation, Lori said.

Compared with apples grown toward the Sacramento River, Noble’s differ in color, texture and flavor. “The grows out there, their apples are very bright in color and soft in texture.” What about the flavor of hers? “In my opinion, much better.”

Though they’re obviously known

for their apples, the Nobles grow about a dozen varieties of peaches and nectarines, as well.

The drought has affected the Nobles’ crops in odd ways, but not always negatively. Trees this year are producing an unusual abundance of fruit.

“Everything was loaded,” Lori said. “If they’re stressed, and because the whole purpose of a tree is to reproduce, they will drop more fruit.”

However, the fruit are generally smaller than in a typical season, and this summer’s pervasive heat sunburned some varieties, damaging the tissue so the exposed side turns brown and flattens out.

On the other hand, heavy rains this winter might present an entirely different set of problems. “If it rains continuously while the blooms are on, and the bees want to be out but they can’t be … I mean, lots of different things can happen.”

Such is a farmer’s life—never knowing what to expect. For instance, foraging bears decimated the Nobles’ pluots last winter, Lori said, and since she and Jim knew water would be scarce headed into spring, “we decided we wouldn’t focus on the pluots this year; we would just ignore them.

“Well, we had thousands of pluots this year, and they didn’t have any irrigation water.” She shrugs. “Go figure.” Ω

ichard Bordin, who’s now in his early 70s, started keeping bees when he was in high school in Durham. He’s a friendly, talkative man who likes to tell stories, and how he got into the bee business is one of his favorites.

It began, he said during a recent interview at Chico’s Thursday Night Market, when he needed to come up with a project for an ag class. His father, who farmed 60 acres of almonds, recommended he do something with bees.

So young Richard went to his Ukrainian mother and asked for some money to buy some bees. She reached under her blouse and pulled out a $20 bill from her bra. With that he bought a hive and a bag of bees. But the hive failed—“The queen died or something,” he said—so he went back to his mom. This time she pulled out $40, with which Richard started two hives. They both thrived.

That was the beginning of Bordin Bees, which for many years has been one of the largest beekeeping and orchard pollination operations in the Sacramento Valley. In a farming area that depends on bees to pollinate its orchard trees, Bordin and his millions of bees have had an outsized role.

By the time Bordin graduated high school, in 1959, he had 30 hives, and five years later he had 300. By 1980, Bordin Bees had 7,000 hives and “trucks you wouldn’t believe,” Bordin said.

The thing about bees is, you’ve got to move them around to where the flowers are. That’s easy enough when the Sacramento Valley’s thousands of acres of orchards

are in spring bloom, but when the blooms are over, the bees still need nectar. That’s when mountain wildflowers, clover and other such flowering plants become important sources.

Bordin is partnered in Bordin Bees with his younger brother, Victor. They have about 5,000 hives and 15 acres of vegetable farm. The bees are spread all around Northern California, especially in the Sierra Nevada, and as far away as Utah, Nevada and Bakersfield. The brothers are often on the road, hauling their hives, as are several of their 10 full-time employees.

They sell most of their honey to the Sioux Honey Association, a Midwest cooperative that markets Sue Bee honey, but they sell about 10 percent of it at local farmers’ markets, along with their produce. Richard Bordin is proud that he was one of the original half-dozen or so vendors when the Chico farmers’ market began 35 years ago.

Beekeeping is tough work, Bordin says, and it’s gotten harder in recent years because of the havoc being wreaked on hives by colony collapse disorder and varroa mites. Every year, he says, he and his brother lose and must replenish 30 percent of their bees.

It’s also hard on the body. Bordin has a bad hip and a bad shoulder resulting from work injuries, walks with great difficulty, and uses a wheelchair to get around. “I’ve worked myself to death,” he said, but he doesn’t seem quite ready to give up the ghost. He rises at 4 a.m. every day and meets his crew at 6 o’clock to start work.

He speaks fondly of his employees, as if they’re like family and it’s his responsibility to care for them and treat them fairly. And he has his next week all planned out—what he’s going to do and where he’s going to do it each day— and he seems genuinely excited at the prospect.

It’s been 60 years since his mother reached into her bra and drew out those $20 bills. Who knew it would lead to a long life with bees? Ω MORE

rchards Farm Advisor Dani Lightle is a woman in demand.

That’s because she’s the University of California Cooperative Extension’s point person for orchardists in Glenn and Butte counties, and with tens of thousands of acreage planted with several crops, she not only gets a lot of questions from farmers, but a great variety as well.

The main commodities she deals with are walnuts, almonds and prunes, but both regions are also home to olive, pistachio, pecan and fruit orchards.

“Basically, if it grows on a tree, it comes my way,” said Lightle, referring to the calls she receives at her Orland office.

During a recent interview at a café in this farming community of about 7,500 residents, Lightle went into some of the history of the UCCE, which is overseen by the UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR).

She noted that it’s part of a national system of cooperatives throughout the nation that was established in 1914 through an act of Congress, the Smith-Lever Act. The system’s purpose was to be a bridge between public universities and the general public; to bring the knowledge gained through academic research to those in the private sector in multiple areas of study, including agriculture. Generally, there is an extension program in every county, although some of the more sparsely populated counties may share a single one (there are 57 for California’s 58 counties). Lightle is one of the state’s 130 cooperative exten-

deal, since there are few navel orange growers in the area. But that pest affects nut crops, too, and can be devastating to yields if not addressed through preventative techniques (removing the so-called “mummy nuts”—the nuts that stay on trees after harvest and become hosts for the insects) or the application of pesticides. Fortunately, Lightle and her colleagues at UCCE had detected the worms’ presence locally and got the word out early about the insect, whose larvae feed on the nut meats.

Climate change is another issue farmers have had to endure. Aside from drought, the warmer temperatures, which have cut into the amount of “chilling hours” trees need to come out of dormancy, can delay flowering, disrupting pollination, and result in a lower crop yield and quality. Last year was particularly strange, Lightle said, noting the extended blooming periods for prunes in particular. Poor pollination and fruit set was the outcome.

In other words, farmers have a new set of complications to deal with, although that’s a recurrent theme for them over the generations.

The orchards of choice in Glenn and Butte counties have gone through many phases, trends and challenges over the years.

The regions used to be home to a lot more citrus, for example, but a devastating frost in the 1990s resulted in many orchardists pulling out those trees and planting other crops, especially nuts. The Glenn County

Afterward, the master gardeners volunteer their time working with the community, passing on knowledge in everything from pruning techniques to insect identification. The latter is right up Lightle’s alley, as she earned her doctorate in entomology from Oregon State University. Before that, the Ohio native did her undergraduate work in biology at a small liberal arts college in that state. She was hired for her advising position about a year and a half ago.

Lightle never knows what sorts of calls she’s going to get on a day-to-day basis from farmers, whether they will relate to ongoing issues or something out of the blue. On occasion, she’s encountered some surprising questions and situations. “Once it was, ‘A goat ate all the bottoms of my trees,’” Lightle said.

So, what sorts of issues are local farmers concerned with? When it comes to walnuts, the dominant crop in Butte County at 44,000 bearing acres, crown gall is a biggie. The disease is caused by a bacterium and results in rough bulging tissue on the roots and trunks that damages the internal structures that supply the trees with nutrients. Lightle can explain the proper ways to treat for crown gall. That’s the advising component of her position. She also shepherds info from local growers to the proper researchers at universities. Additionally, she conducts her own research and organizes educational programs.

One of the big issues this year for growers, she said, is the navel orangeworm. To nonfarmers that may not sound like a big

Lately, however, there appears to be a trend toward walnuts. That mirrors Butte County’s increasing walnut acreage.

Lightle said she sees a lot of potential in pistachios and pecans locally, but it’s difficult to predict what the next big crop will be.

She’ll leave that up to the farmers.

I

t’s harvest season for table olives, the busiest time of the year for Butte View Olive Co. owner Lewis Johnson.

“I’m up at 4 a.m. every day to have some breakfast and leave home by 5 o’clock,” Johnson said of his regular routine during a recent phone interview at the end of a long day. Butte View’s labor force peaks at about 20 workers this time of year. Lewis’ days, of late, are generally spent organizing and directing picking crews on the more than 150 acres of orchards spread across several locations in Palermo and Wyandotte “It’s a hand-picked crop,” Johnson noted, explaining he only grows varieties traditionally harvested for table olives, and avoids newer, machine-picked varieties.

Butte View grows five types of olives—Mission, Ascalano, Manzanillo, Sevillano and Barouni—for canning and oil purposes, with only the first two listed varieties used for oil.

Being up before the sun is practically engrained in Johnson’s DNA. He is a third-generation olive farmer, and the headquarters of the Butte View operation are located

at a Palermo ranch his grandfather bought in 1936.

The ranch is home to what has become the soul of Johnson’s operation, machinery designed to grind, press and bottle olive oil. The family grew exclusively for canning until 1996, but oil has eclipsed table olives as the farm’s primary focus since then. Lewis acquired his first machine to press and grind olives in 2001. Two years ago, he upgraded to new equipment that doubled the company’s capacity to process olives, from 1,000 to 2,000 pounds per hour. Between his own olives and those he presses for other growers, Johnson processes 300-500 tons of olives during the oil season.

The equipment also helped lead Johnson to acquire another olive oil label, Stella Cadente. The former owners took their olives to Butte View to process into oil, and decided to sell him the business in 2007. Stella Cadente is distributed nationally, while Butte View Olive Oil is found at stores throughout the North State and Nevada.

“It’s got its ups and downs, both the canning and the oil industries, but the oil industry is definitely up and coming,” Johnson said. “Most California olive oils are all very good quality, so we do a lot of different flavors to distinguish ourselves from others. We also have our own pressing equipment, so we

can do our own work in a timely manner and have a lot more control over what we are doing.”

Some of Butte View’s flavored oils include garlic, basil, lemon, lime and blood orange.

Johnson said he’s been fortunate thus far during California’s drought: “Olives are very tolerant to low water, but if you’re trying to produce a crop, you definitely need a decent water supply,” he said.

“My water district [South Feather Water & Power] is probably the best in the state,” he continued. “There’s been some long-range planning done back in the late 1950s and early ’60s that allows us to be in a very favorable [position], as far as this drought’s concerned. But I know some [olive farmers] in other areas have had some serious problems.”

Still, Johnson is not completely unaffected, as he mentions during a rundown of his annual routine.

“We’ll finish up for the cannery around early October, then start up the press and run it until January or February. Over the last while, it seems like once we finish pressing, with this low rain, we start farming right off the bat. We’ve gotta irrigate and get everything ready, which brings us all the way back around.

ing concert this weekend.

Like most ambitious young conductors, Seaton has led a wandering life. During a recent interview in downtown Chico’s Upper Crust Bakery and Eatery, Seaton said his travels began long before he decided on a career in music. His parents divorced when he was quite young, and he lived with his mother. She remarried a man who, like her, was in the Air Force. Like most military families, they moved often, and Seaton lived in about a dozen different cities while growing up.

He’s been on the move ever since.

Until now, that is. He says that for the first time in his life he feels like staying put. Chico is “a comfortable town,” he says, “with a good vibe” and plenty of entertainments. He likes that it’s close to the Bay Area, close to his father’s home, and close to nature. And he loves the orchestra. “They’re good. They’re very good,” he said.

One of the North State Symphony’s goals is to attract more young people to its concerts, and Seaton should help in that regard. He’s young, he’s stylish, and he’s super fit, the result of frequent long-distance running and bicycling. This summer he did a 43-day solo bike ride from the Oregon coast to Boston, and two weekends ago he ran a marathon in Ventura County. His goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon, and he intends to keep running until he does so.

school marching band as its drum major and, while attending Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, led the Nashville Youth Symphony for four years.

He continues to play the saxophone, as well as several other instruments, but he’s known since a young age that he wanted to be a conductor. At his relatively tender age, he’s already conducted dozens of excellent orchestras and worked with many exceptional musicians, composers and conductors. He says he hopes to make each concert a mix of the new and old, the fresh and familiar. This weekend’s Now Presenting ... program is a good example. It will open with the overture to Bedøich Smetana’s famous opera The Bartered Bride, a defining work in Czech music. That will be followed by Tchaikovsky’s iconic and hugely popular Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor, with guest soloist Alpin Hong, another hip young artist with an impressive resume (www.alpinhong.com).

After intermission, the orchestra will return with Michael Slayton’s contemporary Fifth Prelude for Orchestra, which was written to accompany such iconic works as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, with which the NSS program will end.

That symphony is at once perhaps the most recognizable in the repertory and, Seaton suggests, one that still has secrets for orchestras to reveal.

The current Blue Room Theatre production of the play, directed

by Joyce Henderson, a longtime mover and shaker in the Chico theater community, brings the work to very poignant—and funny—life.

That’s quite a feat for a play in which the characters repeatedly spew the F-word and address the audience directly to remind us that we are watching a play—an artificial literary contrivance designed to manipulate and guide our emotional responses by presenting fictitious scenarios that evoke our very real human sympathies.

It takes a talented cast to pull off such a feat, and the Blue Room has assembled a great ensemble to do just that. The first characters we meet are Con (Brandon Hilty), a frustrated playwright, and Mash (Alex Hilsee), a black-clad, ukulele-strumming, quasi-goth songstress whose opening number includes such laugh-inducing lines as, “You’re born, you live, and then you die,” and “Life is disappointing.”

The characters of this play—who continually remind us that it’s a play—are gathered at the summer home of veteran actress Emma (Adriane Westerdahl) to preview her son Con’s latest work, as read by Nina (Clarice Sobon), a curvy debutante draped in a clingy gown (much to Emma’s disapproving disdain).

And her presentation is that of a perfectly stilted stage soliloquy: “Here we are. … This is new, this is now … a place where truths can be told. … Aren’t we here?” etc.

Con sums up his play’s postmodern theatrical intent thusly, “We need new kinds of theater! ...

I mean, fuck, do you have any idea what’s passing itself off as theater these days? Do you ever go? ... No, no, I know, you think you should, but do you ever, of your own free will? ... I mean, this theater, this one, where we’re doing this show right now, this one is better than most, maybe (who knows anymore), but Christ what they’re doing to Shakespeare these days to make him ‘accessible’... and the tiny, tepid,

clevery, clevery, clevery little plays that are being produced by terrified theater companies just trying to keep ancient Jews and gay men and retired academics and a few random others who did plays in high school trickling in their doors ...”

Evoking ambivalent selfconsciousness and self-deprecating laughter among the audience may be the implicit intent of much of the play, but Posner doesn’t let us off the theatrical hook so easily.

By adding Emma’s current lover, the bemused, somewhat caddish fiction writer Doyle “Trig” Trigorin (Jeremy Votava) to the cast of characters viewing and participating in the play, and allowing him and other characters to utter nonironic expressions of love, frustration and regret, the audience is taken beyond ironic amusement and into—or at least close to—the realm of classical theater’s ability to explore and elicit very real sympathetic feelings for the people whom the characters on stage symbolically represent: the audience.

Amber Miller’s ingenious stage design for this “meta-theatrical site-specific performance event” provides both minimalist exterior settings and a very realistic interior kitchen scene, and the juxtaposition of the totally imaginary outdoors with the realist interior nicely illustrates the play’s synthesis of dramatic contrivance and emotional honesty. It might not “make you laugh and make you cry,” but it could very well make you grin and raise a sympathetic eyebrow. □

Edgerton’s low-key performance is a necessary part of the characterization. As such, it also serves as a more reflective take on the social, ethnic and moral dynamics that fuel the character extremes of Bulger and Connolly alike, and of many others around them, including even Bulger’s politician brother, William (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Director Scott Cooper gives the whole production a shrewd mixture of action-movie fury and socially minded, 1970s-style crime drama. In scenes of appalling violence, Cooper doesn’t hide the gore from us,

Gerwig, co-creators of Frances Ha!, have come out with another smart, frisky, freewheeling comedy of contemporary manners. Mistress America is more coming-of-age tale than romantic comedy, but the smart, fast-talking, tough-minded legacy of screwball comedy is once again very much in evidence.

Adventurous college freshman Tracy (Lola Kirke) finds herself swept up in the aura of 30-something Brooke (Gerwig), daughter of the man Lola’s mom is going to marry. Both of the young women are quirky, quick-witted, tightly wound and somewhat literary, and they bond almost immediately, albeit more out of impulse than of insight.

Hyperactive Brooke, it soon turns out, is every bit as unsettled in her sense of self and purpose as the much younger Tracy. Plus, Brooke’s old friends and rivals and Tracy’s ambivalent classmates are variously

caught up in the assorted stages of youthful questing—seekers of stories, seekers of selves.

The Visit

M. Night Shyamalan’s “comeback” is mainly brisk, generic entertainment—a comic horror film that’s smartly conventional, amusingly silly and generally mild-mannered.

The story premise has a single mom, long alienated from her parents, sending her children off for a first-ever visit with their grandparents but refusing to go with them herself. The grandparents look “normal” enough at first, but hints of family secrets and other worrisome stuff start edging into view almost immediately. The characters, of course, are little more than pawns in the games that this kind of story tends to play, but you could also say that they are pawns in the games that Shyamalan is playing with those stories here. There are touches of parody and satire in some of it, and the outlandish plotting indulges the wishful thinking of movie audiences while remaining mostly indifferent to murders that, outside the artificial safety of a genre movie, would have left some very large emotional scars.

A Walk in the Woods

This mildly amusing little film is based on Bill Bryson’s book about the trek he and a friend took on the Appalachian Trail, but with the characters’ ages increased to match those of the movie’s stars, Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. Thus, A Walk in the Woods becomes in part a kind of docudrama about two aging actors playing themselves and doing standard-issue bits of grumpyold-man comedy. The screenplay sets up a few narrative lines on which to hang a series of semicomic episodes, with occasional pauses for Bryson-like ruminations. Ken Kwapis’ direction is mostly uninspired; the wisecracking is glib and predictable, and only a little is gained from the briefly sparkling contributions of Emma Thompson (as Bryson’s wife), Mary Steenburgen (as a motel-based temptress), Kristen Schaal (as a very opinionated hiker), Nick Offerman (as a camping-gear salesman), and Susan McPhail (as a laundromat-based temptress).

We started the evening in the bar, which fortunately has avoided the current trend in which every dive bar has a confusing, hand-written list of IPAs and WTFs. There are a few fancier options, but your all-American corporate domestics rule here. Our evening was primarily fueled by a few Towers of Power, colossal lava lamp-like, tapped tankfuls of Coors Light ($18.35) so voluminous they can be ordered only by a minimum of three people. It’s like, bowling alley law, or something.

Even mediocre beer is made excellent by good company, and those things compounded with the singular sounds of spheres sliding across pine lanes and crashing pins conspired to change my mood for the better. ★★★★★ After downing enough Silver Bullet EPIC to battle a pack of werewolves, we ★★★★ made our way to the lane-side snack AUTHORITATIVE counter to get our grub on. Some members of our party grappled with ★★★ APPEALING their personal dietary concerns, expressed their righteous indignation ★★ HAS MOMENTS with American food culture, then proceeded to order every deep-fried ★ FLAWED thing on the menu.

I tried a few bites of a Handcrafted Hamburger ($7.99) and a few slices of Kingpin Pepperoni Pizza ($16.99), both of which were just OK. We also split a Team Xtreme Platter ($20.99), which is basically a collection of the best junk food offered at every little league, arcade and mini golf snack shack this fat kid ever encountered.

The platter includes Old Fashioned Wings, which are available in several flavors, and we chose Blazing Buffalo. They also were just OK. The mozzarella sticks were an all-around hit, and opinions were split on the Nine Napkin Nachos (smothered in chili, cheese sauce, olives, pico de gallo, jack, cheddar, sliced jalapenos, guacamole and sour cream). I liked them. Some people thought the chili was overkill, but then some people just aren’t as Xtreme as others.

The final component of the platter is fried pickles, here known as Frickles. I’ve encountered these rare delicacies on occasion, the best instance before the bowling alley being deep in the swamps of Florida.

But the bowling alley Frickles were a revelation, and a delicious one at that. They’re garlicky dill chips battered and deep-fried to crispy, golden-brown perfection, and biting into the first one felt like mainlining a speedball-like cocktail of dopamine and hot grease. A basket full of Frickles is a basket full of smiles, like deep-fried, salty Prozac.

Entree-wise, the Cheesy Chicken Quesadilla ($9.99) also was impressive. It was well-stuffed, and a dining companion who is particular about such things said it was more perfectly grilled than any she’s found in Chico. There are many other menu options for future exploration, including Mac & Cheese Bites (!), a full range of Wicked Wiches (get it?) and a 5ive Under 550 menu offering lighter fare, like salad or a Jive Turkey Burger. Most appetizers range from $4.59 to $5.99, while entrees range from $7.99 to $10.99.

Some of the prices on the menu, and at the bar, may cause understandable sticker shock. But at the bowling alley, you pay for the atmosphere. The value in people-watching alone is worth the price of a beer and a meal, and bowling a few games, no matter your skill level, can elevate it to a memorable night out.

And hey, it’s a lot cheaper than therapy, and healthier than pharmaceuticals. □

The Harder They Come T.C. Boyle ecco/HarperCollins The Harder They Come, T.C. Boyle’s 15th novel, traverses an area familiar to most Chicoans, the Monterey County coast from south of Mendocino north to Willits.

It’s loosely based on the real-life story of Aaron Bassler, a young Fort Bragg man who in a fit of derangement in 2011 killed two men and then fled into the forest, where for 36 days he eluded capture by the largest manhunt in California history. Boyle’s beautifully written novel is about rugged individualism become madness, a recurring theme in his work. Gathering Sky A Stranger Gravity pC, iOs, Android As you guide your growing flock of birds through the open sky, a musical score—composed by Dren McDonald and recorded at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music—changes fluidly as the birds interact with the world. Gathering Sky is less a video game and more an experience, with a score—a mix of orchestral music, natural soundscapes and vocals—that is an emotional driving force behind the gameplay. When the flutes pick up tempo, you’ll find the flock bobbing through the air responding to your hand unconsciously dancing with the controls. String and wind instruments while riding wind gusts make for an astonishing adventure, and ominous music darkens raging storm clouds. Cold blue monkey I think we all can agree that it doesn’t get more metal than taking a dump while sitting face to face with a live, 6-foot-long alligator looking right through you with its cold, dead eyes … hissing.

I’ve been sitting on that anecdote and the story of my day on the set of a heavy-metal video shoot for a couple of months now. But last week, local heavy-makers Cold Blue Mountain finally debuted the epic video for the song “seed of dissent” and I no longer have to keep the secret. Which has been exceedingly difficult given the fact that arts dEVo (a painfully bad actor) got to star in the video alongside local theater stud Matt Hammons (most definitely a rad actor), whose cred in all things metal and badassness was cemented as the one who Cold Blue Mountain’s Brandon Squyres in shared the john with a dinosaur (who Pirates of the Caribbean 5 ? was safely locked away in a very large photo by miChele CAmy crate) during a break in filming.

But badassness is a relative thing when you’re in the presence of Jeff Lee, the former Chico punk/metal dude (Trench!) and current animal trainer, who brought the alligator, plus a bearcat, lemur, porcupine and one very sweet monkey (which you might remember from the Pirates of the Caribbean films) to play exotic entrants in one hella-metal dog show filmed inside off the Wall soccer by locals Michelle Camy and Frank Rebello.

It was a hot and fun day, and the video came out awesome.

Love’s Real estate The Rise of the Fall The Federal Open Market Committee meets next week and the big question is: will they raise interest rates?

The housing market has ridden historically low interest rates for years now, and this marks the first time in recent memory most analysts think they will take action on rates, bumping them 0.25%.

“Long term, interest rates may slow home price appreciation but I don’t think it will have a notable impact on home sales,” Hepp says.

Most American economists are about 80% certain a rate hike is coming.

Assuming the Fed does raise interest rates, how will that affect housing?

“If the Feds decide to increase the rate at their meeting tomorrow, any increases in rates will be nominal and gradual.

Impact on home buyers will be minimal,” says Selma Hepp, chief economist for Trulia.

Hepp says she thinks the strong economic fundamentals, including robust job growth, better-paying jobs, rising wages

Jonathan Smoke, chief economist for realtor.com, says he sees more sound and fury than real impact.

Smoke goes a step farther than most surveyed, saying he thinks a rate hike may actually be good for housing.

Smoke says he believes a rate hike may be the catalyst to get some people who have been waiting for varying reasons to go ahead and take the plunge on a purchase.

Traditionally, a rate hike slows the market, but maybe the above economist is right. Or maybe he’s blowing smoke.

We’ll see.
