the hundreds of thousands of acres of orchards planted in this arid part of the Golden State. Pistachios and almonds are two of the crops greedy corporate farmers have put in, despite both being water-intensive and the fact that this region doesn’t have the water to sustain them.

Or at least not local water. They can thank the North State and the Sacramento River for keeping the trees alive.

Currently, during this fourth year of drought, in a time when farmers in that part of the state should be fallowing their fields, these wealthy ag interests are continuing to irrigate their thirsty trees. If they don’t, the orchards will die. Never mind the fact that they shouldn’t have gone in the ground in the first place. Never mind that the land is toxic and poses risks to the environment and public health. Never mind that the land has literally sunk from the overpumping of groundwater.

Subsidence impacts not only the environment; it’s also destructive to infrastructure, such as pipelines, sewer systems, canals and bridges. Yet, the ag corporations won’t have to pay to repair any of it. Nope, the [T]hese wealthy taxpayers will pick up the tab.

According to a study by EcoNorthwest, the state could save 455,000 acre-feet of water—about three-quarters of the amount of water Los Angeles uses in a year—by paying between $580 million and $1 billion to retire 300,000 acres of selenium-tainted land, while simultaneously eliminating the water rights associated with it.

The plan isn’t a cure-all for California’s dwindling water supplies, but it’s a step in the right direction. Permanently fallowing lands unsuitable for farming is a no-brainer, and if the governor considers the best interests of the state as a whole, both fiscally and environmentally, it’s something he should get behind. Californians should do the same. □

Stop breeding already We know how tempting it might be to let little Fido keep his man parts in

hopes of running into that perfect fluffball to carry his adorable puppies.

But try this first: Go to the Butte Humane Society website and scroll through the pictures of all the sweet, furry faces of dogs that need good homes. Then consider the fact that, in the United States, more than 7 million dogs enter shelters each year. Of those, 2.7 million adoptable dogs—those that would make great household pets—are euthanized, according to the Humane Society of the United States.

Clearly we have a problem with pet overpopulation. The statistics are much, much worse for cats, though felines tend to do better on their own, in the wild, than their canine counterparts.

So, what can we do about these disturbing facts? First, we can spay or neuter our animals to avoid unintended reproduction. Second, we can stop purchasing pets from backyard breeders. Want a purebred? Check for rescue organizations that specialize in the breed you want. If you’d prefer a mutt, there are plenty out there eagerly awaiting their “forever home.”

Pets make amazing companions and they give nothing but love.

Let’s offer the same in return. □

Horses and Puppers Like most writers, I’m drawn to subjects I’m passionate about. I have a lot of interests, but some of my favorites include politics, the environment, crime, rights for disabled people and animal welfare. So, when putting together our Pet Issue, I immediately picked up the story about a horse sanctuary called The Mustang Project (see page 18).

Tracy Mohr, the organization’s founder, is struggling financially to keep a herd of wild horses that was gathered from a federal wildlife refuge in northern Nevada that’s ridding the property of so-called feral horses. The animals come from three distinct herds that ran wild on the land prior to the inception of the preserve, and the nonprofit sanctuary just wants them to be able to live out their lives in peace. If they hadn’t stepped up to provide them a home, they would be dog food—maybe even people food (horse is cuisine in many cultures). That’s the sad reality.

The work of the organization resonates with me for a couple of reasons. First, I’m a horse lover. I don’t think horses should be slaughtered for food—animal or human.

Second, part of The Mustang Project’s mission is to help at-risk kids by pairing them with horses to look after—not these horses, but others in need of care. I can relate. I grew up in a broken home, but was fortunate enough to have a horse.

I can say with certainty that having Ginger, my blue roan quarter horse, kept me away from hard drugs and other things that would have gotten me into real trouble. I mucked stalls to keep her, and my parents chipped in to pay for the rest of her board at the stable in Livermore, where I grew up. In those days, hay was a lot cheaper.

The nonprofit really needs its own home to cut down on costs to make its program sustainable. It also needs regular donors to help keep the horses fed. I’ve decided to kick in a small donation each month. I don’t have a lot of money, but I can definitely set aside what I’d spend on a couple of lattes and gift that tax-deductible donation to this good cause instead.

In last year’s Pet Issue, I wrote about my German shepherd Boaz, and what a blow it was to have to say goodbye after spending 13-plus years of my life with him by my side.

Very recently, I had to say goodbye to another beloved pet, Puppers, who lived out in the country with me for the first seven years of her life. When I moved away and my dad and stepmom built a house on that property and retired there, Pup became their dog and lived the life of Riley. She was one of the happiest and best dogs I’ve ever known. I mean, look at that face.

Long live Ed Re “Return of Edward Abbey” (Cover story,

by Brad Rassler, July 16): Ed Abbey wrote in the introduction to his finest piece of writing, Desert Solitaire: “much of the book will seem coarse, rude, bad-tempered, violently prejudiced, unconstructive—even frankly anti-social in its point of view. Serious critics, serious librarians, serious associate professors of English will if they read this work dislike it intensely; at least I hope so.”

Abbey didn’t get his wish, as evidenced by CN&R’s feature. And for good reason: Cactus Ed could write.

Abbey’s importance isn’t to be found in his anarchism, or his love of guns, or his warnings of overpopulation and immigration. Abbey’s importance is in how his words could inspire.

It is impossible to read him without wanting to strap on a backpack, grab a walking stick and head out into the wilderness. And when you get there—what little remains of it—you’ll want to defend the same from the greedheads and the bulldozers.

Another one of my favorite writers, the radical journalist Alexander Cockburn, actually visited Abbey’s grave. Abbey’s friend, Doug Peacock (who helped with the illegal burial of Ed Abbey) brought Cockburn there a few years before Cockburn died. Cockburn wrote of Abbey: “Abbey at full stretch remains a great writer and he’ll stay in the pantheon for all time.” I agree.

Screwing the poor Re “Clean it or close it” (Editorial, July 16): The Chico News & Review has taken on the issue of less frequent cleaning and deteriorating water quality at Sycamore Pool— another example of downgraded city services, impacting the urban forest, the library, parks and assistance to the homeless.

Though “tight” budgets have been foisted on the public as the inevitable result of “mismanagement,” this “crisis” is mysteriously coincident with the increasingly obscene concentration of power and wealth in the hands of the few. You’ve no doubt seen statistics on the ever-widening gap between rich and poor in the U.S.—the worst among developed nations. These statistics are lived by the poor and it’s the poor who swim at Sycamore Pool; while the rich have private clubs, swimming pools, creeks, lakes, beaches and can fly to resorts anywhere in the world.

We have our undertaxed, upper 1 percent here in Butte County, just like everywhere else: landlords, developers, rice and nut growers, doctors, administrators and some fabulously successful business owners. While this class gets richer every year, the quality of life for the underclass continues to deteriorate.

Can’t “afford” to keep Sycamore Pool clean and open? In this, the richest nation on earth?

Bullshit.

Re “The bigots among us” (Editorial, July 16): This is America. You have the right to wave the Confederate flag or the ISIS flag or even that German flag without being confronted by hateful mobs. You should be able to wave whatever flag you want free from intimidation. Not all people who like the Confederate flag are racists. Not all believe it was a racist symbol.

You think your way and let others think the way they want, or has god struck you on the head like Obama and made you perfect? If blacks are disturbed by the flag, they should be civil enough to get over it. Where, for example, would we be if everything made us mad enough to rush out and fight or tear up property? Every day a I see a newly transformed street-side park strip. Turf being displaced by gravel, crushed stone and bark chips, sometimes accompanied by drought-tolerant plants and randomly placed rocks.

I like to play golf, and quite honestly, my sand trap game is lousy. After botching a sandwedge shot my blood pressure skyrockets. What to do?

Dumping sand all over my park strips, creating mounds and bunkers complete with sand rakes is the answer. Then when my sand wedge fails me, I’ll grab the sand rake and start drawing calming patterns in my Zen garden, while meditating about the true meaning of golf.

More on sidewalk bikers Re “Three on the commentary” (Letters, by David Eaton and Janine Rood, July 16): I’ll admit the California Vehicle Code is a trifle vague

on the subject of bicycles on sidewalks so that it might be interpreted to the advantage of bicyclists wishing to do so. I plan to dedicate some time to making the code a little less vague. Mr. Eaton, while I’m not necessarily your adversary, I don’t want to be your ally, either. I just want you off the existing sidewalks.

Ms. Rood, why waste time and money creating more bicycle lanes? The bicycle lanes in place now are largely ignored in favor of the sidewalks. A writer on one website I visited remarked that while it might be legal to ride your bicycle on the sidewalk it might also be considered antisocial, meaning having a callous disregard for the welfare of others.

‘Cockamamie idea’ Re “Far out” (Cover story, by CN&R staff, July 9): Whose cockamamie idea was it to put a young man diving head first into white water on the front page of the CN&R? I know more young men than I can count on one hand who are wheelchairbound because of diving head first into water! Please think a bit more about the images you put on your front cover or anywhere inside your publication for that matter.

Also, the cuckoo who wrote in and said one of the “perks” of giving blood is getting a free HIV test should be fined and banned from donating blood in the future!

CN&R should be ashamed of publishing it! Total disservice to people who need healthy blood donors! I am a nurse and a 10 gallon platelet donor, so I am not talking smack!

Correction In last week’s Newsline “Murky waters” (by Howard Hardee, July 16), a city of Chico official pointed the CN&R to documentation of Butte County’s recommendation that water used for recreation not exceed 500 fecal coliform organisms per 100 milliliters—the standard Chico is following for Sycamore Pool. In fact, that documentation was more than 20 years old. The county has since adopted the fecal coliform standards of the state, which are the same as the Environmental Protection Agency guidelines, recommending that water not exceed 400 fecal coliform organisms per 100 milliliters. BOOZE-FUELED CRIMES COMBATED

Efforts in Oroville to reduce alcohol-related crime recently got a boost as the Oroville Police Department was awarded a $47,660 grant from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC).

The state department’s grant assistance program has distributed more than $30 million to local law enforcement agencies since 1995, according to an Oroville PD press release. It seeks to prevent minors from obtaining alcohol and penalize “bad operators”—businesses that violate laws or contribute to an increase in crime— through fines and suspensions or revocations of alcohol licenses.

“The program improves the quality of life in neighborhoods,” said ABC Director Timothy Gorsuch. “We’ve seen a real difference in the communities where the grant program resources have been invested.

SHOOTER SENTENCED TO LIFE

On July 15, Robert Duane Duggan was sentenced to life in prison for attempted murder in connection with an attack at a Chico residence last spring in which he shot out the eye of an unnamed victim.

According to a press release from the Butte County District Attorney’s Office, in the early morning hours of April 12, 2014, the victim went to his front door when he heard the doorknob jiggling. Duggan was outside and demanded $100. The victim, who wore a patch over his right eye during testimony, told the court that he refused and tried to shut the door, at which time Duggan shot him at least five times with a 9mm pistol— taking out his eye, and also hitting him in the shoulder, leg and back. He crawled to a neighbor’s, who called 911.

Duggan was also found guilty of aggravated mayhem, felon in possession of a firearm and possession of cocaine.

SCHOOL, CHURCH BURGLAR PLEAS

A man arrested in March for a string of break-ins at local schools and churches pleaded no contest to 18 counts of burglary in Butte County Superior Court on July 15.

Police arrested Kyle Hubbard (pictured), 26, after a short foot chase near Safeway on East Avenue on March 16, according to a press release from the Butte County District Attorney’s Office. From October 2014 to March, Hubbard targeted schools and churches because he believed they “would have cash lying out in the open,” the release noted. Hubbard reportedly told investigators he’s a methamphetamine addict who burglarized to pay for drugs. He caused tens of thousands of dollars in damaged and stolen property while doing so.

Hubbard is set for sentencing Sept. 2, when he will face up to 14 years and four months in Butte County Jail.

For the kids ‘Unstoppable mom’ leads effort to establish kid’s museum in downtown Chico

might dream up: a colorful, miniature city beneath the boughs of a gigantic climbing tree populated by pint-size future professionals playing at their possible trades.

They have maintained a website and social media presence for several months, but announced intentions to open the museum on the 300 block of Main Street (in the long-vacant space once occupied by The Underground) publicly at the Thursday Night Market on July 16. Their hope is the community is supportive enough to help raise the necessary funds— which Leslie estimated at about $400,000—for a projected opening in 2016.

Leslie is a native of Austin, Texas, who moved to Chico two years ago; in her hometown, she worked as a real estate agent, but became better known for her charity work with nonprofit groups such as The Austin Shelter for Women and Children and Austin Pets Alive, when her social work and parenting style prompted a friend to nominate her for a contest called Unstoppable Moms. She was one of 32 semifinalists featured on ABC’s Learn more: Live with Kelly & Michael, The Chico which also landed her and her Children’s daughter in a national magaMuseum zine ad for the contest’s sponmaintains a website at sor, Motrin.

similar eclectic, funky vibe,” Leslie said during an interview also attended by museum board member Ashley DeKellis. “It’s the kind of place you come for a weekend and you want to come back to and stay, which is exactly what I did.”

Leslie’s initial visit to the North State was to see her cousin, Alexa BensonValavanis, president and CEO of North Valley Community Foundation.

“I knew that if I came here I could take some time, work with [BensonValavanis] and figure out how I could make a difference in this community,” Leslie said. “I wanted to start something that really felt good, and that I could be with for the long haul.”

She eventually landed on the museum project, and said working with the NVCF has helped a lot, noting the nearest other such museum—in Sonoma— took a decade to get off the ground. She and Charlie spent a lot of time at a children’s museum in Austin for organized birthday parties and gatherings, and more random visits. “It was a fun place to go spend time together and get out of the heat.”

museums around the world. Most are members of the Association of Chil-

dren’s Museums, which holds annual conferences, provides professional support and helps them connect to sellers of traveling and permanent exhibits. Leslie was quick to note that the Chico museum would be completely unique, and feature a mix of prefabricated and locally made exhibits. Board members are reaching out to local artists, designers, builders and various departments at Chico State to tap for talent and involve in the museum’s mission.

Leslie said that mission differs from other local museums—like the Gateway Science Museum and Chico Creek Nature Center—because it involves a more hands-on, play-oriented experience. “[Traditional] museums are quieter and help children learn on a different level,” Leslie said. “It takes a certain kind of brain and state of mind to go there and absorb the information.”

The children’s museum would instead focus on real-world professions, play and hands-on interaction. Child visitors would step into the roles of working professionals, complete with costumes and high-tech toys. She used a veterinarian’s office as an example.

“They’d walk in, decide if they wanted to be a doctor or a nurse, put on

scrubs, a mask and gloves, and then use play equipment to simulate what they might do as a working vet,” she said. The animal patients even have working electronic heartbeats.

The museum would be Chico-centric in some ways, with exhibits focusing on the area’s agricultural surroundings and other unique aspects of local culture.

“Rather than have a grocery store, our store might be more set up like a farmers’ market,” Leslie said.

Board members have had positive meetings with the Boys and Girls Club of the North Valley, Chico Creek Nature Center and others, Leslie said. Organizers plan to use the visibility of the museum’s downtown location to help advertise and support other organizations, and to develop exhibits and programs to supplement and support the resources offered at like-minded organizations.

The group’s next step is fundraising, and

Leslie said they’ve already gotten pledges for donations and exhibit sponsorships. DeKellis is the group’s fundraising coordinator, and though no solid plans have been made yet, she said she has several “outside-of-the-box” fundraising ideas in the works.

Leslie said the building’s owner, Alan Tochterman, has been supportive of the effort thus far. All monies raised will go directly to the building’s interior and operating costs, and once opened the museum will have its own source of revenue. The group is in the process of establishing a nonprofit status.

Since the museum group’s public announcement, much ado has been made over its proposed location on a “barheavy downtown block,” as the Chico Enterprise-Record highlighted in a recent headline.

“Forty-five percent of the museums that are part of the Association of Children’s Museums are in downtown areas,” Leslie said. “Many have grown into areas some people wouldn’t want to expand into, but when they move into these overlooked areas people start looking. Museums like this get other people curious and involved in something positive, and that tends to have had a snowball effect.”

Leslie believes the museum could be a major contributor to Chico’s downtown revitalization efforts: “Our board has spent hours and hours on that block; sometimes we’ll count how many children walk by with their parents. On average, eight children might walk by in one hour on a Tuesday afternoon, so imagine if the children’s museum is there so they have a place to go on that block.

“We certainly have the best interests of all the businesses there in mind,” she continued. “We’re not trying to run anyone off, but we want to help clean it up and make the entire block something people can be proud of.” Ω

wealthier man. He, along with the 22 other presidents of schools in the California State University system, received a 2 percent pay raise on Tuesday (July 21).

Zingg’s been back in Kendall Hall, the iconic red brick building that houses campus administration, for about a month, and says his recovery is “finally going smoothly.”

Shortly after undergoing surgery on March 15, a staph infection sent him back into the hospital, and then he returned for another procedure more recently because he had kidney stones.

“Bad things come in threes,” he said by phone Wednesday morning. “I’ve had my three. I’m glad to be back in action—that is for sure.”

He returns amid criticism of the raises, the second awarded to the system’s top executives by the CSU board of trustees since November (they’d previously gone seven years without a salary increase). Zingg’s annual base pay jumped by $5,758 from $287,885 to $293,643; he plans on donating between 10 percent and 15 percent of his salary to support academic and athletic scholarships and organizations such as the North State Symphony, the Janet Turner Print Museum and the Chico Women’s Club.

Supporters of the raises point to a report by the Committee on University and Faculty Personnel that says the salaries of CSU presidents—which range from $236,484 to $422,300 per year—are well behind those at

comparable universities across the nation.

“In many employee groups at the CSU, salaries lag behind market comparisons,” the report reads. “This observation is exaggerated in the executive employees, where the average gap approximates 25 percent behind market.”

Zingg agrees that the discrepancy has made it difficult for CSU to recruit and retain the system’s top executives.

“Presidents come and go for different reasons,” he said, “but yes, some presidents have left the system because of salaries that aren’t competitive with what they can realize at similar institutions.”

should prioritize paying the employees who work most directly with students.

In a press release, CFA President Jennifer Eagan, a professor at CSU East Bay, said, “Presidents don’t teach classes, and they’re not in direct contact with students.

That’s a consistent problem. The CSU is running on a model that fails to prioritize our mission to teach students above all else.”

At Chico State specifically, wage stagnation, poor retention of faculty and workplace dissatisfaction have been long-running problems. In February, a couple hundred protesters made up of Chico State staff and faculty members gathered in the campus core and marched past Kendall Hall, decrying salary inequity, bullying and intimidation on the part of university officials, and a lack of transparency from administration.

And that was just a few months after the CSU board of trustees ratified a three-year contract with the CFA, which immediately increased all faculty salaries by 1.6 percent and provided a 3 percent boost to long-term employees. (The CFA is currently negotiating with CSU regarding the 2015-16 contract.)

Morale among employees on campus has remained low since then, says Robin McCrea, an administrative analyst for the College of Agriculture. “Unfortunately, the cost of many people’s health benefits increased to the point where they are making less, even after the pay increase,” she said by phone. “It’s not a happy place for staff. Last year, I shared with the president in an open forum that, for many, the ‘Chico experience’ is becoming the ‘Chico nightmare,’ when it comes to trying to survive on the salaries paid to staff.”

Zingg says such observations are fair, but must be considered in full context. “The entire workforce suffered terribly over the last 10, 12 years,” he said. “We went seven years without salary increases for anyone. That’s a correct observation, but it should apply to the entire workforce—not just faculty.”

By 2017, Chico State will have hired a total of 125 tenure-track members, Zingg said. “We will recover significantly from losses we’ve had over the last 10 years or so.”

Still, McCrea believes there are lingering employee issues at the university that are trickling down to the student experience.

“When staff morale is so low, and people are so frustrated, it can’t help but impact students,” she said.

has had its share of police shootings and allegations of brutality. Once again, it’s in the spotlight. This time, the case involves a deputy at the jail who allegedly exposed himself to a female inmate and fondled her against her will. The sheriff acted quickly, immediately opening an investigation that led to criminal charges and reforms.

About a year ago, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office got word that Timothy Hill, a 27year-old correctional deputy, may have been acting inappropriately with one of the female inmates, said District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

The day the investigation was launched, Hill resigned from his post. And almost 11 months later to the day, charges were filed against him for indecent exposure, sexual activity with an inmate and sexual battery.

“Information came from an inmate that he was exposing himself to her on one occasion and on another occasion was engaged in, essentially, a hugging fest with her,” Ramsey explained by phone. “It was a serious crime, but not a rape. He was [allegedly] groping her over her clothes.”

much has transpired. First, Hill resigned from his job. “That precluded any further [administrative] investigation,” explained Sheriff Kory Honea. “You can’t discipline or terminate someone if they’re no longer an employee.”

Then, Honea said during a recent phone interview, the incident prompted some changes at the Butte County Jail, including added security cameras and anti-prison-rape training. Honea said he feels confident that his office’s reaction to the allegations sent a

strong message to the rest of his staff—and the public—that such behavior is unacceptable.

Honea couldn’t elaborate on the details about the victim or where the alleged incidents occurred, but he did say that they prompted the addition of two surveillance cameras in the jail that cover previously unrecorded areas.

In addition, he said all of the jail’s staff members—including volunteers—were required to undergo training during the past year. The training was provided as part of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), passed in 2003.

“I do think it’s helpful,” Honea said of the training. “It’s certainly a significant topic, and an important one to train staff on and be on guard against. I think it will certainly help increase the level of professionalism within the organization.”

Data from the U.S. Department of Justice, collected as part of PREA, indicates that in 2008-09, there were 14,334 male and 1,485 female inmate victims of sexual misconduct by jail and prison staff in the United States.

The vast majority of those incidents were heterosexual and some of them were consensual.

That survey also indicated that 2.7 percent of inmates at Butte County Jail reported being the victims of sexual misconduct by staff that year (compared with 3.1 percent nationally). An additional .07 percent reported being victimized by another inmate. Honea and Ramsey both said, however, that this is the first case they’re aware of being reported at the local jail. In Butte County, on any given day there are about 95 female inmates and upward of 500 male inmates.

The correctional staff also is diverse, consisting of 58 male and 16 female deputies.

“It’s always disappointing when you have a staff member who violates our code of ethics and code of conduct and engages in conduct that is completely inappropriate,” Honea said.

“But we launched the investigation immediately upon learning about it, and submitted the case to prosecution. That demonstrates that this kind of conduct will not be tolerated.”

Hill is scheduled for arraignment Aug. 31.

Off the streets Homeless youth in Chico have a new place to turn n a recent morning, Josh Neese O was hanging out in Bidwell Park, hungry and without a place

to go. This was nothing new to Neese, who at 20 years old has spent most of his life on the streets, and relies on local organizations for many of his basic needs. So when he heard about Youth for Justice, a new program hosted at the Chico Peace and Justice Center on Wednesdays and Sundays, he immediately headed over to check it out.

“The first thing they did is offer me food and coffee,” Neese recalled during an interview at CPJC on Sunday (July 19). “I knew it would be very friendly because they put off a good energy.

I had no worries coming in here; I knew I could tell them about my past.”

Originally from Tennessee, Neese has been in Chico for about six months. Aside from “three good years” when he had a job in Redding, he has been without a home of his own.

Just how many young homeless people like Neese are in the area is difficult to say. Jennifer Barzey, program manager at the 6th Street Center for Youth, said her organization sees more than 300 homeless youth—ages 14 to 24—each year, but that number accounts only for those who choose to check in.

“It’s a difficult number to get just because of the nature of young people,” she said. “Some don’t want to be seen.”

Youth for Justice was created

by local homeless advocate Bill Mash through a partnership with the CPJC. Its goal is to provide a safe, open space during gaps in service at the 6th Street Center, which is closed on weekends and on Wednesdays until noon. While the program currently serves homeless people ages 18-24, Mash is looking for ways to expand that age group and let younger people into the program.

Since launching in mid-May, Mash and a group of volunteers have opened CPJC’s doors every Wednesday and Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m.

Mash, 55, has long advocated for homeless people but recently refocused his effort on young adults, partially because of his personal connection with them.

“I was a homeless youth—I was a runaway,” Mash said.

“Youth for Justice was a recommendation made by Olivia Schmidt, co-director at the center.

The placeholder name was originally ‘Youth for Peace.’ She thought, and I concurred, that ‘justice’ was more action-oriented and would spark a different feeling than ‘peace’ would. Like taking action—getting justice.”

greeting those who came in by name and encouraging them to grab some snacks or a cup of coffee. Mash’s warmth and interest is part of what makes Neese feel so welcome at Youth for Justice.

“He has this uplifting energy,” Neese said. “He’s always happy and that really helps when you’re down on yourself ... I’m always generally happy—it’s all about perspective—but it’s cool to see people like that.”

Mash is hoping to expand Youth for Justice’s services by hiring personal and crisis-management counselors. He is selling copies of his DVD, Poor People’s Film Festival, at the center, with all proceeds going to Youth for Justice. The film chronicles the lives and plights of homeless people, mostly from Butte County.

Aramenta Hawkins, co-director of the CPJC, said her organization partnered with Mash because it has the accommodations, staff and volunteers, as well as the desire to serve local homeless people.

“In Chico, we see people in poverty every day, whether people want to acknowledge it or not,” she said. “When 6th Street is closed, there is still a need for a place where youth can just have a safe space where people are not judging them, where they can talk to someone.

“When they walk through these doors, they know they’re not being judged. They come in here knowing this is for them.”

Responsible reefers Chico Reef Club offers expertise on proper care, environmental impacts of saltwater aquariums

“Patience and research are the two most important things to anyone considering buying a tank,” Chico Reef Club President Andrew Johnson said during a recent interview. He shared a litany of other problems new fish owners encounter—not letting their tank develop in cycles, buying fish that get too big—that regularly lead to improper care and unnecessary loss, both of fragile sea life and interest in aquariums.

“That goes along with the practice of being a responsible animal keeper at any level, but a lot of people just see them as fish in a bowl, and not a living organism the way they view their dog.”

A typical home saltwater aquarium contains dozens of species of fish, corals, plants and invertebrates native to widespread regions of the world’s oceans and seas. Johnson said too few would-be hobbyists ask important questions like where the organisms come from, how they’re collected and how to properly create and care for an astoundingly diverse biosphere that doesn’t exist anywhere in the natural world.

newcomers with the difficult learning curve. To that end, the club hosts monthly get-togethers, regular fish and coral swaps, and guest speakers on issues affecting home aquariums and the worldwide tropical fish trade.

“The average is a year before most people give up,” said Johnson, who also serves as a moderator on the international saltwater aquarium online forum REEF2REEF. “We try to save them a lot of hassle and promote the best practices.”

Regulating the tropical-aquarium industry—both fish and

corals—is a difficult task considering the number of countries involved, each with differing sets of laws and economic and environmental challenges. The primary organization overseeing the trade is the multinational Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, commonly known as CITES. Recent regulations imposed by CITES—as well as international, U.S. and state governments—have led to sea changes in the industry over the last few years, largely driven by decreasing populations, which have led to some species (particularly corals) to be outlawed from collection, and others permitted in far lesser amounts. Chris Pozar, owner of Chico Pet Works, and Jody Smith, owner of Reef Connection, both say this has had a profound effect on prices at the retailer and consumer levels.

Pozar used yellow tangs as an example, saying that species of that fish harvested in Hawaii used to be cheap and abundant; now they arrive less often and the cost has gone from about $10 to $40. But, he said the result has been positive.

“It’s changed the dynamic of that certain species,” he said. “There was almost a complete ban because yellow tang numbers were diminishing, and now we hear they’re much more abundant.”

Another problem is with collection practices, which experts say are notoriously abysmal in certain countries.

“Some fisheries are really well-managed, like Hawaii,” Brian Tissot, director of the marine laboratory at Humboldt

State University, told National Geographic last year.

“Australia and Fiji also manage their aquarium trade activities fairly well. But the Philippines and Indonesia— which together account for about 86 percent of the fish imported into the U.S.—have some of the more poorly managed fisheries.”

Tissot went on to say that the use of cyanide to stun fish and make them easy to collect—a practice once common in the industry—has been outlawed in the Philippines, but 50 percent of the fish from there still test positive for the poison.

“When people use cyanide to catch fish, they’re killing 80 percent of the fish they’re targeting, not to mention dumping that crap all over the reef,” Johnson elaborated.

“Then it goes to some place to be shipped overseas, and stops through another two or three hubs before it makes it to the pet store. Then if someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing picks it up and puts that fish in a tank—a tiny organism that’s experienced that kind of trauma—its demise is pretty much guaranteed.”

Johnson said it’s important to ask pet stores where their stock comes from, and that local outlets have generally been moving toward acquiring captive-bred fish, some of which are locally raised by hobbyists-turned-professionals.

“I’m definitely concerned [about where fish come from] and I don’t want the industry to be detrimental to the environment,” Pozar said. “We’re seeing more captive-bred stuff, cultivated and fragged-out corals, the types of things that need to be done to keep the industry going. I’d much rather see that than have us continuing to take from the environment.”

In order to add to conservation efforts, the Chico Reef Club has a program called Don’t Break the Chain, in which members who’ve proved they have the equipment and knowhow to properly care for corals take a chunk and grow it until they can break off two to pass along to other members.

As far as putting fish into the hands of inexperienced keepers, Pozar and Smith said they try to dissuade beginners from buying animals beyond their skill level.

“When some people come in saying ‘I want a Nemo,’ I have to lightly tell them, ‘That’s not for you,’” Pozar said.

“I try to work backward, ask what they want and then say, ‘Why don’t you start with this and work up to that,’ so someday they can have their Nemo without killing a whole bunch of clownfish in the process.” □

What are the challenges and benefits of being a veterinarian who only does house calls?

It’s not the most lucrative way to earn. I can see maybe five or six appointments in one day because it takes so long to drive and set up, but I can go at a much more relaxed pace. I really like that. I can see animals in much more relaxed settings. We can do things to them that couldn’t have been done at a regular practice. A lot of animals get pretty stressed out being taken [to the vet].

How did you get into animal acupuncture and why do you believe in it?

I get acupuncture done myself.

When I started seeing my acupuncturist, we didn’t address any actual physical concerns. She just gave me an Eastern diagnosis and after [several sessions] I noticed that the shoulder pain I’ve had for 20 years was almost unnoticeable.

It’s an amazing way to alleviate pain and I’ve seen it work really well on animals. Oftentimes an animal [in hospice care] can’t be given the full range of pain medication, so acupuncture really adds to your bag of tricks.

What is an ‘Eastern’ diagnosis?

They assess an animal in terms of Chinese concepts that would not even apply to Western medicine.

For instance, an animal that has weak joints and pain. You might look at the tongue and take the pulse, [ask about the animal’s behavior and tendencies] and assess it as having a spleen-chi deficiency, which has no correlation in Western medical terms. But in Chinese terms they deem that the spleen channel is a little bit weaker, is causing some problems and needs balancing.

Besides joint pain, what types of ailments does acupuncture treat?

It can treat behavioral issues, some skin conditions that are very difficult to classify in terms of Western medicine. For some skin conditions, the best thing we have yet is steroids. If for whatever reason the owner doesn’t want to give steroids to the animal, then we try to treat that with Chinese herbs and Chinese acupuncture.

Are some animals more receptive to acupuncture?

Some animals are difficult to acupuncture. They are very sensitive, they don’t understand, they’re having a hard time. But, oftentimes, those are the ones that for some reason seem to respond really well in medical terms.

Which animal species react best to acupuncture?

I’d say horses and dogs. Cats can be a challenge but they can also respond really well. Dogs are probably the easiest. They’re less suspicious of needles.

During my freshman year at Chico State I had a history class in a portable classroom near the corner of Second and Ivy streets. Though I generally was a good student, I’m at a loss to remember anything about the course now. I have no idea what period of time we covered or for that matter whether it was American or European history. In fact, the only recollection I have remotely associated with that class is passing by the Crazy Dog hot dog cart on the way to lectures.

Though I didn’t know his name at the time, John Geiger would greet me twice a week with a huge smile, a vibrant welcome congruous with the rainbow umbrella hat and Hawaiian shirt that was his standard uniform. Sometimes Geiger’s wife, Ethel, would join him, and I remember stopping by at one point during that semester for a hot dog and a Dad’s Root Beer and finding a proud exclamation that the Geigers were going to be parents.

It’s been more than a decade since that time, and over the years the Geiger family business has expanded beyond hot dogs. The Crazy Dog cart is still around, but John also spearheads the Fork in the Road events and oversees Street Food, Chico—a Facebook group with the haps on local fare.

Ethel, whose nickname is Inday, opened Inday’s Filipino Food cart a few years back, and on Saturday, July 25, she will officially open a brick-andmortar restaurant at 1043 W. Eighth St. The food cart will stay in operation and the restaurant is unlike anything I’ve ever heard of. It will be open only on Saturday evenings for what the Geigers are calling Kaymayn Saturday Nights. The tables will be set with banana leaves and will be absent of any utensils or plates; patrons will eat dishes like shrimp lumpia and boneless pork ribs with their hands.

I’ve never been an adventurous eater (hence the frequent trips to the hot dog cart), but this is one experience that sounds too intriguing to miss. Keep in mind reservations will be required (call 520-2593) and a minimum of four people must be in your party.

Speaking of new eateries, Crepeville is (really) coming to downtown Chico. The restaurant was originally slated to open in the same building that houses Burgers and Brew, as the eateries have the same owners, but when the burger joint recently reopened at its new location at Third and Broadway, there were no crepes on the menu. Manager Nick Land said the owners were exploring a standalone location just for crepes, and now a home appears to be found—a banner announcing Crepeville’s impending arrival is hanging from the Grand View Building at 240 Main St. Also, national chain Noodles & Co. will open next to the planned Panera Bread at the Chico Mall, in a new building under construction where Marie Callender’s used to stand. The menu is, as its names implies, a carb lover’s dream, featuring pastas, as well as salads and sandwiches.

SYPHILIS ON THE RISE

The reported number of syphilis cases among women in California has doubled over the past two years, while congenital cases, in which the disease is passed from mother to newborn, have more than tripled.

From 2012 to 2014, reports of syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease, among women increased from 248 to 594 and congenital cases increased from 30 to 100, according to a press release from the California Department of Public Health. Dr. Karen Smith, the state’s health officer, said in the statement that congenital syphilis—which, left untreated, can lead to poor pregnancy outcomes, birth deformities and delays in development—is “a needless tragedy that can be prevented with good prenatal care and timely and effective treatment.”

Most of the congenital cases were reported in the Central Valley and Los Angeles County.

The CDPH has yet to identify a cause for the increase, but noted the disease is often associated with poverty and lack of access to health care.

WEST NILE HITS HOME

Two human cases of West Nile virus (WNV), detected after both residents donated blood, were recently confirmed by Butte County Public Health. Both people were symptom-free and unaware of their infections.

WNV is transmitted to humans and animals by mosquito bites and can be fatal; symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, muscle pain and nausea. So far this year, the Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District has detected WNV in 15 mosquitoes and one dead bird, according to a BCPH press release.

The county reminds residents to avoid potentially infectious mosquitoes by using insect repellant, covering skin as much as possible in the early morning and evening, and removing standing water. To report unmaintained swimming pools, call 533-6038.

GUN OWNERS UNCHECKED

State Auditor Elaine M. Howle recently concluded that a backlog in California’s program to determine whether potentially dangerous people own guns poses a risk to public safety.

In 2013, a state audit report recommended identifying owners of guns who are prohibited from bearing arms due to a “mental healthrelated event in their life,” according to a letter Howle recently addressed to Gov. Jerry Brown and legislative leaders. But since then, the California Department of Justice has repeatedly delayed making progress on completing reports, Howle’s letter reads.

The department cross-references databases to find people who purchased guns before they lost eligibility to do so because of mental illness or criminal background. According to The Los Angeles Times, the department recently had about 3,600 reports of gun owners who might not qualify to own a gun in a daily queue, while its goal was to keep that number under 600.

daughter of policyholders. Her parents, ages 89 and 87, retired from New York to New Mexico 25 years ago and continue to live independently.

“When medical issues come up, it’s nice to know that they can access health care without a lot of worries or concerns,” Schroll said by phone while visiting her parents. “As a family member, it’s a relief to know they have something that’s necessary and I don’t have to worry about them losing their home because of medical complications; it provides a certain security, taking care of your loved ones.”

Financial peril—expenses from health care depriving seniors of all their resources—was in fact the impetus for Medicare, which celebrates its 50th anniversary next week.

Schroll has plenty of experience with federally funded health insurance.

Before joining Chico State’s Student Health Service in 2011, she worked as a general practitioner in private practice with many North State seniors as her patients. She has spent parts of the past five years in Colorado providing hospice and palliative care—expertise for which she has received board certification and now also utilizes when called upon by Enloe Medical Center.

She’s also a member of Physicians for a National Health Program (PHNP),

which advocates for a single-payer plan.

Along with coordinating 50th birthday celebrations, PHNP has been lobbying on behalf of HR 676, aka the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, which essentially would offer a Medicare-like plan to every U.S. resident.

For Schroll, insurance is more than a financial issue. When she was in private practice, patients would often withhold their medical information because they were afraid their private insurer would drop them, and that fear lingers even since the Affordable Care Act passed with protections for pre-existing conditions.

“That wasn’t the case with Medicare,” she said. “People didn’t feel uncomfortable revealing their health history because they didn’t have to worry about losing their plan.”

into law on July 30, 1965, beside former President Harry Truman in Independence, Mo. Truman, who first proposed a national health care program in 1945, became the first beneficiary.

David Sayen, Medicare’s regional administrator for California, explained that when the program started, only one in four Americans had private health insurance. The 75 percent who didn’t, he said, often would find themselves in poverty after hospitalization for a serious ailment.

Even though medical care cost less then, “they were hobbled.”

Medicare was designed to protect people in retirement, but it is not just for the elderly; it now also covers people with disabilities and certain disabling illnesses, along with their dependents. The Medicare Modernization Act (MMA), signed by President George W. Bush in 2003, added a prescription drug component—Part D— among other changes, including “valuebased pricing” in an effort to control costs.

Enrollment after the first year was 19.1 million; today it’s around 55 million.

Sayen says he doesn’t “do crystal balls” when asked what’s on the horizon for Medicare. He did say by phone from the Bay Area that laws “always have a long tail”—meaning that legislation takes time to implement. Elements from

“While our administrative costs appear low, we cannot use benefit costs for safeguards,” he said, referring to fraud protection.

“Private insurers use dollars to protect dollars.”

This may be why Medicare imposes fewer hurdles—claim denials, prior authorizations—for doctors to clear. That ease of use earned praise from Schroll, who acknowledged Sayen’s concern for fraud but said there is a middle ground to be found for administrative costs.

As for fears of a monopoly, Schroll offered a reminder of the purpose of Medicare.

“Is it for the stockholders? Is it to provide health care to people?

To negotiate for prices that benefit people would not benefit stockholders, probably,” she said.

“We as a society have to decide where we are going to come down on that.” □

Sayen understands the reasoning behind single-payer advocates’ admiration of Medicare, which is often considered a model of reform. After all, the program has demonstrated longevity, which gets equated with sustainability.

Without passing judgment or taking a political stance, he highlighted some key considerations.

“Medicare has been a great success in that it has improved the health and well-being of seniors and people with disabilities,” Sayen said. “But the challenge ahead is to manage the cost of the program so that the benefits can be maintained.” His agency, CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), continues to develop new payment structures in an attempt to slow the rise of health care costs because, as the largest single payer, i.e. customer, “Medicare is the gorilla in the room,” he said. Its decisions are “driving what happens” industry-wide.

Consolidating all plans into a one entity would make that gorilla even larger. Sayen compared the impact on negotiations with providers, equipment manufacturers and pharmaceutical makers to the dealings the Defense Department has with defense contractors.

our dog loves you. Really, it’s true. Even though none of us likely needed scientific proof that the love we feel for our furry friends was being reciprocated, scientists are now finding evidence in brain scans as well as hormone research that human and dog feelings of love are mutual. Of course, even if it was merely food and shelter making our pets go ga-ga over us, it wouldn’t matter. As long as we are comforted by those happy hormones (thank you, oxytocin) that we receive when we notice our dog, cat or horse leaning in for a scratch on the head, it’ll always be love to us.

We at the CN&R want to celebrate the special relationship between animals and their human caretakers, so we once again bring you our Pet Issue. Foster program helps prepare dogs and cats for ‘forever homes’

ax wasn’t expected to live this long. When the M 4-year-old Lab mix was placed in the care of Christina White, one of Butte Humane Society’s

foster volunteers, he had a life-threatening heart condition that prevented him from being made available for adoption.

“They told me when I got him … that it could be days, weeks or months,” said White. “And he’s been here a year.”

Watching Max on a recent Friday morning as he playfully wrestled with a pack of five dogs barking and frolicking around the front yard of White and her husband’s ranch property in Corning, he showed no outward signs of ill health. In fact, given that his bad heart makes him ineligible for neutering, he’s actually become the leader of his cohorts.

“Before, he would sit there and he would lie down and you could see the way his heart was beating. It was horrible. But now, if he lies down and relaxes, he looks just like everybody else,” White explained. “When I first got him he looked really old, like he was done. Since he’s been here he’s actually looked a lot younger. He acts younger.”

Max’s is just one of many happy stories to come out the Butte Humane Society’s fostering program, which places animals that are not ready to be adopted into the homes of volunteers.

“It saves lives,” said Kathy Fowler, coordinator for the foster program. “It could be an animal that is sick or underage. You’re getting them well enough or old enough to be adopted.”

On the BHS website, there’s a list of animals that are typically candidates for fostering, including a mother and her nursing puppies or kittens; motherless puppies or kittens that are under 8 weeks old, some in need of bottle feeding; animals recovering from surgery or illness; or animals that are simply stressed or depressed and need to be outside of the kennel environment. “[We have] a group of volunteers who take the animals into their homes and care for them as if they are their own,” said Fowler. “In June, I had 103 unique animals out in foster.”

Max is White’s first fospice pet, but he’s far from her first foster. Ever since she and her husband moved to their 17 acre ranch three years ago, White’s regularly brought sick dogs and litters of puppies from BHS to her animal compound— which is also home to cats, cows, goats, chickens, a flock of ducks, a miniature horse, pot-bellied pigs, firebellied toads, a bearded dragon and some goldfish.

“I went from my dinky little house to this place, and I’ve got more property here. … Our dream was to get a place where we can do the animal thing,” she said.

One of the greatest benefits of a pet being fostered is the presocialization that it provides, getting animals used to the routine of being part of a regular household before going to its “forever home.” And at White’s busy house—which also includes her two young children—fosters get a lot of experience.

“These guys get socialized to a lot of different scenarios: older kids, younger kids, men, women, people going in and out of the house, a number of dogs and a number of cats,” White said, adding that potential adopters can have “the security that their animal is well-rounded.”

In addition to Max, White is currently fostering Sarah, a sweet, year-and-a-half-old black-haired Chihuahua mix with ulcers in each eye that require twice-daily applications of steroid paste.

Looking for home Wild horse sanctuary in need of a place of its own by

hen Tracy Mohr contracted with the W U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to take dozens of wild horses being rounded up

at a federal refuge last year, she decided to choose the ones that were older or had injuries that would make them less likely to be chosen for adoption.

But those traits that made them unadoptable have turned out to be a life-saver for the animals.

“All the horses we have, it’s actually good in a way that there’s something wrong with them, because at least they’re safe,” she said during a recent interview.

Mohr, founder of The Mustang Project, a nonprofit wild horse sanctuary, explained how some of the other horses rounded up at the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge in northern Nevada went to uncertain fates. She found out that a couple of the other parties that contracted with the agency ended up running the animals—the young and healthy ones no less—through auctions whose clients typically purchase equines for slaughter.

“They might be dinner in Spain somewhere,” said Mohr’s husband, Gary.

That was last September. Today, the horses that were lucky enough to end up adopted by Mohr are safe from the auction yards. Most of them, 45 to be precise, live in Stoneyford, on pastures that the couple rent. There is a small herd of seven mares and two beautiful colts born just this past spring that lives in Orland. During a recent visit to the lush irrigated pastures, the wild equines were on high alert as this reporter

snapped a few photos. At one point, all nine animals, a bit startled by a newcomer, galloped around the property, a beautiful scene for any horse lover.

The situation may sound idyllic, but it’s not ideal for Mohr, since she lives in Corning and works in Chico, both a fair distance away from the main herd. More critical, however, is that the current arrangement isn’t economically viable in the long term. In fact, at this point, nearly a year after taking the horses, Mohr is struggling to meet the expenses, about $5,000 per month, of her undertaking.

“Resources-wise, we are pretty much going by faith at this point,” acknowledged Mohr, who is also the animal services manager at the Chico Animal Shelter.

When she originally committed to taking the horses, Mohr found a private property owner who was willing to provide a home for the animals for no charge. She spent thousands of dollars on an environmental review of the donated land, but the landowner ended up backing out of the deal at the eleventh hour. She and Gary made the decision to go ahead and take the horses, and ended up finding adequate pastureland just a few days before the Fish and Wildlife Service dropped off the animals.

They’ve been searching ever since for a long-term home, and so far, have run into dead ends.

Mohr noted that the horses come from three distinct herds whose lineage goes back more than a hundred years. They were used in the military, including during World War I. She lamented that the nation’s population of wild horses, whether on Bureau of Land Management properties or federal land, such as the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge, is

dwindling in light of aggressive roundups.

There are actually more wild horses in holding facilities than there are roaming free, according to BLM data.

In addition to letting the wild horses live out their lives in peace, Mohr has always wanted to operate a program for kids, at-risk teens in particular, to work with horses.

Her vision is to have that program up and running on a property where the couple can live on-site and care for the Sheldon horses.

Because she would like for the public to come and see the animals, that pretty much eliminates acreage off of private roads that would pose impediments to public access.

She’s still open to parties willing to donate land or enter some sort of ecosanctuary partnership, but more recently, she’s been investigating purchasing property herself.

“You know, we just want to have a place where people came come and enjoy the horses, have the horses enjoy just being horses,” she said.

“Who says they aren’t valuable just because you can’t ride them or they’re old or whatever. Just the fact that they’re there and they’re beautiful makes them valuable.

“We want to bring them home.” □

A time of sadness It’s OK to weep when we lose our beloved companions by

omebody just died,” Ula begins.

“S “Somebody was just born,” I answer, smiling.

“Somebody is crying,” she responds.

“Somebody is laughing.”

“Somebody is scared.”

“Somebody is watching the rain.”

“Somebody is working in the sun.”

This is our game. It spontaneously began about two years ago. She usually starts it. It’s something we do privately— our secret way of marveling at the complexity of the world. I was reminded of our game yesterday as Spriggan, my 15-year-old Australian shepherd Lab mix, lay beside my kitchen counter. I was making candles. She was dying.

Spriggan, Spriggy for short, came to me as a puppy a few months after I completed my exams in grad school. She sat beside me every morning as I worked on my dissertation. She was there when I came home from my final defense bearing the title Dr. Hayes. She slept somewhere nearby when I conceived each of my children. She walked five miles with me while I was in labor with Saoirse. She climbed up and down the stairs with me as I worked to strengthen the contractions for Ula’s birth.

She stood beside me when I pushed both of my daughters into the world. She laid by my desk every morning when I worked on my writing. She sat outside the processing shed when I cut meat. She swam beside me in the pond to cool off on hot days. She was always by my side in the car between home and the farm.

Spriggan began to fail about two weeks ago. It started on a walk in the woods. I had noticed she was slowing down for some time, but she would always plod along at her own pace. I would frequently have to

stop walking so she could catch up. But on that day I waited and waited, but she wasn’t there.

I retraced my steps down the slope to the stream and found Spriggan lying there, panting heavily. Seeing me, she pushed herself up and followed me home. I made her take a few days off from going on walks. Then, on a day when she seemed especially eager for our daily jaunt, I let her come along. She collapsed again.

“She’s getting ready to go,” I told my husband, Bob. It’s no secret that I’m a dog person. The kids tease me that I love my dogs more than I love them. And Spriggan was more than a companion. She was my shadow.

She was part of me. We began inviting other dogs into our home a few years ago in an effort to thwart future sadness. All of them are comforting and joyful, but they are different from Spriggy. I thought I would be OK with our inevitable separation if I had the support of other dogs. What are farms, anyhow, if not a magnification of the circle of life?

I wanted to be by her side. If I tried to leave the kitchen, she struggled to pick up her head to locate me. So I stayed. And in my distress, I made things: candles, salves, soups. I cooked lamb. I boiled fiddleheads.

Saoirse and Ula ran and played around us.

But yesterday at dawn, when I went to work in my office, Spriggy struggled to follow me and collapsed in the hall. Bob carried her to the sheepskin beside the kitchen counter. I ate my breakfast on the floor next to her. As the day unfolded, it was clear that she was no longer able to walk.

And then Mom called.

“How are you doing?”

“The kitchen’s a mess.”

“You’re all in there around her?”

“Yes.” “That’s what she needs. Keep it up.”

My kitchen became like the forest, like Ula’s game. Somebody was crying.

Somebody was cooking. Somebody was

eating. Somebody was talking. Somebody was learning. Somebody was cleaning.

Somebody was dying.

Spriggy picked up her head in a sudden jerk. I dropped the measuring cup I was holding and rushed to her.

“It’s time,” I called out to the girls.

They came and sat beside me. “It’s OK, Spriggy,” I whispered, tears streaming down my face. “You can go. But wait for me, OK?” I burrowed my fingers into her fur until I found her beating heart. I kept them there, feeling her pulse, until it stopped. I didn’t beg her to stay. That’s silly.

My home is like the forest. Change is the only constant. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t cry. I sobbed. I howled. The girls clung to me, more frightened by my sadness than by the loss of the dog.

“Mommy! Spriggy isn’t gone. You said she can come back,” Ula said, grabbing my shoulders. “Remember? Maybe she’ll be a cockatiel! Maybe she’ll be a fish! Say it Mommy!”

She shook me, her voice shrill with

panic. Her eyes were wide, and the tears were thick. She took a deep breath, and then said what worried her most, shouting it out so that it slammed against the walls of the kitchen.

“Mommy! Say you’ll be happy again!”

I took my hands from Spriggy’s fur and wrapped them around Ula’s balled fists.

“Remember the game?” I whispered quietly. “Where sometimes somebody’s happy and somebody else is sad?”

She nodded.

“Right now, it’s my turn to be sad. And you just have to let me. But that doesn’t mean I’ll never be happy, OK?” She nodded again, then fell to her knees beside Spriggy’s body and began to pet her. “I’m sorry, Spriggy. I’m sorry I didn’t know how to love you enough!”

There’s no such thing as enough when it comes to love. But that’s a lesson for another day. For now, I’m just somebody sad. Somebody who cries. Somebody who loves. Maybe tomorrow, or the day after, Ω I’ll be somebody who laughs. more PETS continued on page 20 July 23, 2015

Referring to her work, the artist states on her website, “Image fragments are

used as a means to refer back to the idea of the whole, implicating romantic notions of landscape and creating a narrative, which never quite gels.” Even if not quite sure of the literal meaning, if any, of this statement, I’m inclined to agree wholeheartedly with its concluding phrase. And by illustrating the incomprehensibilty of modern life, Wallace’s collection can be viewed as a resounding theoretical success.

Aesthetically, one of my favorite pieces in the exhibition is “Reflective” ($300), a small oil-on-canvas piece with visual elements of hurricane fencing, an orange sunset with childlike flying bird silhouettes under a gray sky, in which a large pink “wall” separates the sunset image from an amorphous abstract landscape. Perfectly complementing and balancing the dominant pink plane, an anomalous smear of bright green with white highlights coaxes the eye into refocusing on the painting’s representational details. The effect is simultaneously exhilarating and calming.

Another favorite piece is an untitled oil on canvas with gold leaf ($350) that depicts a rather heavy-bodied wolf snarling over what could be interpreted as a slice of gold-leaf pizza. A vertical shaft of white emits a glowing smear of light and the background shifts from roughly rendered landscape to an abstract, not-quite-cubistic backdrop

accented with vertical indigo bars. The impression is ambiguously, but quite evocatively, narrative.

As Wallace tells us, “By compiling bits of images, which I think of as visual acronyms, I attempt to secure some sort of foothold or locate a sense of personal identity amidst this glut of information.”

Dominating the rear wall of the gallery, the large oil and acrylic “Rainbow Chasers” ($1,200) successfully demonstrates the effectiveness of Wallace’s narrative technique. At upper left, an ornate, antiquated wall sconce floats above a field of blue-green wallpaper print. Proceeding diagonally toward bottom right, the eye passes over a deeper patch of blue that contains a disintegrating mushroom cloud and becomes captured by the face of a golden-haired young woman lounging against a cabinet. Her cocked eyebrow evokes a haughty or disdainful mood as a rainbow’s arc touches down above her head and a black stallion gallops across a gray prairie toward a pastoral green meadow where a cow grazes serenely near a tree-lined pond. Each element is separate and complete, but combined on the canvas the images resonate against and around each other, creating a narrative that, as the artist states in the program, “is left for the viewer to decide.” Ω

t’s summer again, and for me that means three

and ginger beer.

I am not talking about Canada Dry, which, although kind of Jaime similar, is a ginger ale. Ginger beer Carrillo is a brewed beverage—as opposed to being flavored carbonated water—that can contain anywhere from very low to a moderate amount of alcohol, and features far more of the rhizome’s spicy flavor than ginger ale. And it’s easy and cheap to make yourself.

But be forewarned, brewing is more lab experiment than cooking. This will become evident if, like me, you do a shoddy job cleaning old Grolsch fliptop bottles for bottling your brew, only to come back a week later and smell something so rotten it could easily be weaponized by the military. (Worse, you could run into a multicolored fuzz on top of your brew that might be evidence of the toxic mold strain stachybotrys.)

My home brewing started as a failed attempt at making regular beer. It turns out brewing beer takes dedication and far more elbow grease than I will ever be able to dispense. Thankfully, for the weaker among us, ginger beer is far less laborious.

Still, there’s no getting around cleaning bottles (the fancy resealable flip-top bottles of Lorina French Lemonade are ideal, but you can also use common plastic, twist-top soda bottles) and everything else that will touch the soon-to-be-fermenting beverage.

Lots of warm, soapy water, followed by rinsing and sanitizing with a diluted bleach solution (or easy-touse Star San, available at your local brew shop). by

I adapted my recipe from a very basic Alton Brown/Food Network “ginger ale” recipe (I doubled the ginger, replaced lemon with lime and added vanilla). First step is the syrup, which not only flavors the beer but provides the fermentable sugars for the yeast. I put about 3 ounces grated ginger root, 6 ounces sugar, the juice and zest of one lime, one split vanilla bean and half a cup of water in a saucepan over medium heat. Once the sugar was dissolved, I removed the pan, covered it, and left it to steep overnight.

The next morning, I strained the golden syrup through cheesecloth. At this point, if you’re impatient, you can just dilute the syrup with carbonated water (or filtered water if you like it flat) and serve over ice for a ginger ale-like beverage.

To continue to beer you’ll first wake up about an eighth-teaspoon of active yeast (I use champagne yeast) with a little warm water (according to yeast’s temperature specifications), then stir the yeast mixture and syrup into 7 cups of water (room temperature) and funnel the batch, carefully, into bottles and leave at room temperature for at least 48 hours.

The wait is the most difficult part of the process.

You’ll have to suffer through lesser beverages for two or three days while the yeast eats the sugars and converts them into tasty CO2 bubbles and alcohol (though it is minimal—in the 2 percent ABV range).

After three days, I chilled it, then took a bottle from the fridge and presented the fruits of my craft toward the heavens and cried, “I made this with my hands!” Turns out there’s plenty of pride in having spent a few days toiling over a simple but very delicious and satisfying drink.

But my family still prefers Canada Dry. □ July 23, 2015

Are you working on a follow-up for Can’t Even Do Wrong Right?

I’m sort of in the process of writing tunes for the next one. Basically, when the songs come, I start writing. I don’t really have a process for it. Most of my songs are written in the studio. I try not to limit myself unnecessarily but in the end it’s sort of my goal to do things this way.

How many shows are you and the band playing these days?

We fly out and play just about every weekend, and this schedule is really working for us. We’re doing Edmonton’s Blues Festival and another in Canada [the Summertime Blues Fest] in addition to playing around the Bay Area. We’re even playing a festival in Poland [Rawa Blues] in October. If the money’s right, we do it. These days I take the gigs that can take care of the band.

Do you think you could you make a living simply

Pretty much. The one smart thing I did was hold on to my own publishing at an early age. You know, record labels traditionally would collect your publishing money, then give a portion to the publishing house, and then it would finally go to you. It always just seemed like just one more way to get screwed, and I wasn’t having none of that. I’ve been writing songs for over 50 years and my mailbox is usually pretty full because of it.

Any advice for the newer artists who are just starting to release records and tour?

Truthfully, I feel sorry for the young guys coming up. These record labels want a piece of everything you make, from merchandise to publishing to whatever else they can get. There aren’t nearly the amount of clubs around as when I started playing out. I’d say just keep playing wherever and whenever you can.

There’s often a negative stereotype attached to bands that play casino gigs, but those venues usually pay better and draw a bigger crowd. How do you feel about that stigma?

I don’t give a fuck. I’ll play any damn where we can get our foot in the door as long as the checks clear. I know what I’m supposed to be doing and know how to do it. Of course, it’s a little more fun playing for people in a small club since they’re right in front of you, but really the venue I play doesn’t matter so much. I’ve got a great band behind me, including Ed Earley [trombone/percussion], who’s been with me for over 25 years, and it’s one of the best feelings in life to play out live.

With such a huge catalog of music, how do you go about choosing a set list?

I really follow the crowd these days and react to the situation. You want people to hear enough of the new ones, but then they get upset they haven’t heard enough of the old ones. Then you get the folks who hear the old ones and tell their friends that “Elvin played the same ol’ shit again.â€? Sometimes you can’t win. You really just want to get up on stage and nail that shit and leave ’em wanting more. I think we do a good job of that. â–Ą

Rudd was given the Ant-Man job by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), who left as the film’s director after working on the project for years. While Wright still gets an executive producer and some writing Ant-Man credit, Peyton Reed (Yes Man), relative Starring Paul newcomer to big-budget flicks, wound Rudd, Michael Douglas, Corey up at the helm with a script rewrite from Stoll and Adam McKay and Rudd himself.

tion has fallen into the wrong hands. His sinister business partner Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) has uncovered Pym’s shrinking technology, and has created his own suit and a new bad-guy persona, Yellowjacket, for nefarious purposes.

Lang is hand picked by Pym to break into his own company’s headquarters and steal the new suit.

Pym’s daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly), who wants her own suit, reluctantly trains Lang in the ways of punching, shrinking and conversing with Ant-Man’s insect friends.

Rudd is so good as Lang/Ant-Man, and the film would’ve likely been a dud without his presence.

He’s a naturally funny guy who can play schmaltzy drama and make it seem cool. The soap opera stuff with his daughter, for example, has a silly edge and actually becomes almost heartwarming.

The mostly CGI special effects are well done.

The first shrinking sequence, involving a bathtub and eventual placement on a crowded dance floor evading feet in the dark, is a true stunner. Lang’s interactions with insects are reminiscent of another shrinking movie, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, in which an ant was treated like a pet horse. It’s a little cutesy, and the kids will dig it.

Ant-Man acknowledges the Avengers universe in many ways (in the comics, Ant-Man was a founding member of the group), including a prominent appearance by Anthony Mackie as Falcon and John Slattery as Howard Stark (Iron Man’s dad). The film wisely takes a tongue-in-cheek approach with the Avengers, playing things mostly for laughs.

Overall, Ant-Man is fun, but less than remarkable.

The movie feels very much like a typical Marvel movie on par with the likes of Iron Man 2 or the first Captain America. It plays it safe, and that’s probably why Wright left the scene. Ω

Minions

The little yellow things from Despicable Me get their own computer-animated film, and their shtick is fun for a while, but not enough to sustain an entire feature film. The Minions have always wanted to be henchmen and are attracted to serving bad guys, and three of them (Stuart, Kevin and Bob) decide to head out on a journey to look for a new master. Their travels take them to New York in 1968, and up to this point the movie has a cool MAD Magazine vibe going for it. Things start going off the rails a little bit when the trio leave New York for Orlando, Fla., where they seek out the evil Scarlett Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock). She has some cockamamie scheme for the Minions to steal the Queen of England’s crown. So they all travel to England, where things get even wackier. The best thing about the movie is the Queen (Jennifer Saunders), portrayed as a happy-go-lucky goofball, but the Minions themselves get a little grating after the first 45 minutes. He’s back … wait, what? It’s probably best to not strain oneself too much when trying to connect the time-traveling dots of a film franchise that reworks the story arc— bringing back a 67-year-old Arnold to replay the unkillable killing machine—in order to reboot the series. Trainwreck

Comedian Amy Schumer’s first star turn is a mixed affair. Directed by Judd Apatow from Schumer’s script, the film seems uncomfortable in its raunchy rom-com skin as it choppily sets up the story of a 30something party girl whose boozing, onenight-stand lifestyle is threatened when she meets a sweet sports doctor (Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader). However, after the prolonged setup, the film does start to come together in a somewhat surprising way. As the narrative bears down on the serious transition happening in the lives of two sisters (Schumer and Brie Larson) with a dying pops (Colin Quinn), it becomes more of a touching story of a family at a crossroads than a hard-R comedy. And the closing scene is as genuinely romantic as it is ridiculous. Despite not living up to the level of excellent raunchy satire of Schumer’s Comedy Central show, there are many hilarious moments. Schumer’s solo-riffing (e.g., poking fun at her sister’s nerdy husband, played by a sweet John Birbiglia) is effortlessly sharp. And her many comedy guest stars also get a turn in the spotlight—Quinn as her cranky dad in a nursing home, Dave Attell as a wisecracking homeless dude, and NBA star LeBron James takes a surprising turn as an intensely involved client/friend of the sports doctor —J.C.

Tame Impala Modular Australian rock band Tame Impala’s first two records, 2010’s Innerspeaker and 2012’s Lonerism, are psych-rock affairs that sizzle with high-end synthesizers, crunch with fuzzy guitars and swirl with all conceivable studio effects turned up to 11. The band’s third album, Currents, isn’t nearly as dense, particularly on the seven-minute neo-disco opener “Let It Happen” and the titanic break-up song “Eventually.” The sounds are more subtle, given more space and have moved deeper toward the back of the headphones.

Compared with the noise palette of 1960s psychedelia that frontman/ mastermind Kevin Parker exclusively favored on previous records, his newfound interest in electro-pop—you can hear Michael Jackson’s influence in the punctuated gasp between the chorus and verse in the breezy, sleazy “’Cause I’m a Man”— represents a departure that doesn’t feel like a stretch. That’s because Parker has always composed his guitar-based music with an electronic producer’s meticulous layer-by-layer approach. Guitars are almost entirely absent now, but Parker’s uncanny hook craftsmanship is still front and center, and his introspective lyricism has grown more poignant (hear “Yes I’m Changing”). Such emotionally impactful songwriting doesn’t usually come wrapped in glossy, impeccably produced grooves— and that’s why Currents is a strong candidate for album of the year.

Radio Recovery Success Red Scare Industries For nearly a decade, the members of Seattlebased pop-punk band Success have been grinding through their day jobs in addition to spending endless hours on the road. And the hard work they’ve put into the DIY music scene is audible in their music. With the band’s most recent release, Radio Recovery, the quintet’s infectious thump is finally reaching and taking hold of 1990s-punk lovers outside the Pacific Northwest. Radio Recovery is fast, earnest and rife with a dissident view of working life. Tracks like “22nd St.,” “Nowhere Kids,” and “Head for the Hills” echo a theme of teenagers trapped in suburbia, but this time with the hope of escape.

A punching kick drum drives “Head for the Hills” as frontman Rev Peters fervently sings “Just walk out your job/No matter what they say” over a chord progression reminiscent of ska-punks Less Than Jake. The entire 10-song collection—with the exception of one acoustic ballad, “The Impossible Truth”—is relentlessly energetic, and the fun is immediately sparked by the singalong opener “Believe In,” which could light a euphoric fire under even the worst of days.

Flesh EP Andrew Osenga Self-released Andrew Osenga loves outside-the-box musical endeavors. We’re talking about a guy whose latest EP—Flesh—is the third entry in a fourEP project called Heart & Soul, Flesh & Bone, and who not too long ago released a concept album about a guy named Leonard the Lonely Astronaut. Flesh is a damn good time and plays like a loving ode to the glory days of 1990s-era alternative music. You won’t be alone in feeling like the hooks and melodies of “Fight Like a Man” are a nod to the Gin Blossoms playbook, and it won’t be hard to hear shades of Dinosaur Jr.’s clever hooks—not to mention rip-roaring guitars and thunderous drums—in “Black Cloud.” “I Was a Cynic” lands somewhere between Jimmy Eat World and GRMLN with its fuzzy guitars, pogo-inducing beats and repeated shouts of “Come on! Come on! Come on!” It’s a hell of a lot of fun. Thematically, Osenga weaves these six tunes together by focusing on having hope, fighting back and gleefully giving your struggles the middle finger instead of letting them squash the life out of you.

As much as Arts DEVO loves his animals, and this special issue of the CN&R devoted to all the fur babies, I know that I am doomed to the worst sort of heartbreak. We all are just waiting to be crushed, whether by the fate of our own pets or that of Charlotte, Marley, Laika or any of the other famous animals we’ve never met but have weeped over nonetheless. Normally, it’s a film or a YouTube video Laika that gets to me, but one of the most moving portrayals of a pet in peril that I’ve ever experienced was courtesy of former Portland, Ore., band Pond’s 1997 song “My Dog Is an Astronaut,” about Laika, the adorable stray that the Soviet Union launched into space in 1957.

as the scene turns Big changes are coming to the local nightclub scene. First, Honey dog Chico’s longest-running downtown live-music venue, LaSalles, is about to be transformed. According to owner Nick Andrew, this fall, the downtown nightlife staple will close for a remodel, with plans to reopen as a sit-down restaurant. The new venue will still feature live music, but the big stage will be gone. Andrew plans to go out with bang with a series of big shows. Stay tuned for details.

Meanwhile, on the south side of town, the organizers of spring’s Chico Breaks the Record marathon are starting to implement big plans at the Tackle Box Bar and Grill. According to CBTR mastermind Julian Ruck, he is in the process of taking over the booking reins at the venue, which has recently installed a brand new sound system to go along with the new dance floor and expanded stage that the owners built for the April record attempt. To start, Ruck said that they will be rebranding the venue as “The Box,” and that he plans to eventually book 12-15 acts a week from a “wide variety” of genres. The hope is to expand on the success of the CBTR event by creating “a live music hub that develops and promotes local talent.” Stay tuned to see exactly how that vision will play out. how Many years? Happy anniversary to both Scotty’s Landing (60th) and Paradise’s Theatre on the Ridge (40th). Scotty’s continues its summer of celebration with a party this Sunday, July 26, starting at 4 p.m., with food, music and stories from owner John Scott. And the longest-running community theater in Butte County, which turns 40 this October, is getting a head start on celebrating with a one-weekend run of its first-ever production, a police drama/radio play called Detective Story, showing Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

My buddy Bill and I fired off that string of jokes, evoking the spirit of our old friend and mentor, Ken DuVall, the jokemeister of all time.

“I sure miss old KDV; how long has he been gone?” said Bill.

It was three years ago this week, and we miss him.

KDV had such an impact on all who knew him and worked with him that his name comes up every day in a joke, a story, or a real estate dilemma.

The first time I saw Ken in action, he stood at the front of a classroom in a real estate license prep course; he was the instructor. He took boring material and served it up mixed with jokes and stories, and made it palatable.

Ken was a sincere mentor.

Ken was born and raised in Hollywood. He raced motorcycles in competitions on tracks, dirt and desert sand. He was a stuntman in the movies where he crashed cars, flipped motorcycles and jumped off buildings. Check out “Hot Rod Girl” and “Jail House Rock” from the ‘50’s.

Through it all, Ken was a salesman. From the time he was a teenager, he sold everything from aluminum siding to coffee makers, to TV antennas.

Then fifty years of real estate.

“The secret to selling, babe,” he said, “is trust and honesty. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made. Just kidding!”

Ken loved his wife and kids. “In all things, my friend,” he said, “love is the answer. Now, if I can just remember the question…”

Ken loved his dogs. The last note he sent me was “Things We Can Learn from a Dog: 1) Never pass up a joy ride. 2) Be loyal. 3) When someone is having a bad day, be silent and sit close by. 4) When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.”

RIP, KDV, one of a kind. We miss you.
