personal passions lie. Here are three power-packed options for plugging into something more.

Cheer for Chico!

T

he college experience isn’t limited to what happens inside classroom walls, and Chico State offers plenty of opportunities for students to indulge and pursue their interests outside of academia. There are dozens of regular events, campus clubs, concerts, exhibits, student organizations and more offered every semester—something for everyone, no matter where your

Even though it’s a Division II school with no football team, Chico State Athletics is actually a highly regarded national program with a storied sports history, with 99 NCAA Championship berths, 40 CCAA conference titles, 24 west region titles, 15 national titles

and counting. There are 13 varsity sports— men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, cross country, golf, and track and field teams, plus men’s baseball, women’s softball, as well as a women’s volleyball team—and fans (that would be you, students!) are welcome to come enjoy and cheer them all on. Some of the more recent highlights of the program include the men’s baseball team, a College World Series regular with four title-game appearances (1997, 1999, 2002, 2006) and two NCAA

championships (’97, ’99) under its belt; the golf program, which has featured a couple of national golf champions, including Kyle Souza in 2011; and the men’s soccer team, which made it to the second round of the 2013 national tournament. The most energetic shows would probably be the raucous men’s and women’s basketball games ($7/ general admission; $4 students). And in the spring, the men’s baseball team puts on one of the best showcases of top-tier talent in the country ($6/general; $4/students). There are also a number of gender-specific and co-ed sports clubs offering students the chance to represent Chico State against other schools in sports like field hockey, ultimate Frisbee, lacrosse, rugby, water polo, soccer, volleyball, waterskiing and many more. And even though Chico State’s official fight song is a little corny, singing along with a rowdy crowd is still a blast. So before you head out to one of the university’s athletic events, it might be fun to learn the tune. Your spirit might be just the thing that pushes the team to victory! Hail to Chico State/She’s our dear old alma mater/where our teams so great/lead us on to victory/ Rah Rah Rah/Where our men are square/and our fair coeds are fairer/ come let us give a cheer/for dear old Chico State. Last, if you’re interested in doing some sweating of your own, you’re not limited to the treadmills and spinning bikes of the WREC. Students of all athletic ability and backgrounds can participate in intramural sports leagues as well, from basketball and soccer to kickball and dodgeball.

Go into the darkness If you’re the type whose admiration leads more toward great auteurs than great athletes, or you just like to disappear into a dark room and immerse yourself in another reality, then there is a special, and often underutilized, resource hiding in the art building at Chico State. The University Film Series is a weekly presentation of some of the best international films every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. during the school year. The films are shown CAMPUS continued on page 10

in Ayres Hall’s state-of-the-art Little Theatre (room 106), offering a rare chance to get the full theater experience with celebrated films that the cineplexes likely passed over. A $3 donation is requested, but not required, to attend. Many of the films tie into whatever annual theme the Humanities Center has chosen for its events (public speakers, symposia/tertulias, and films). For example, the theme for the 2014-2015 school year was “Food and Culture,” and some of the foreign and domestic films shown included the fairly familiar—Delicatessen (France, 1991), Like Water for Chocolate (Mexico, 1992)—and the more obscure—Jiro Jiro Dreams of Sushi (USA, 2011), I Like Killing Flies (USA, 2004). Each semester offers a few proven classics as well, with examples from last year including Jean Cocteau’s surrealist/fantastical 1946 masterpiece La Belle et la Bête (aka Beauty and the Beast) (called “one of the most magical of all films” by the late Roger Ebert) and Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 psychological thriller The Conversation.

participate in the OVP as part of their studies, but other students and community volunteers are also welcome to come work and learn on the farm and take home some organic vegetables in exchange for their efforts. The OVP is committed to growing healthy and nutritious organic produce using small-scale agricultural techniques, and distributes these vegetables to students and the public in a variety of ways. The OVP also provides organic veggies to the Associated Students Dining Services (Marketplace Café, A.S. Catering, etc.), and to the public, at two weekly, seasonal farmers markets—Fridays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the University Farm (311 Nicholas C. Schouten Lane, off Hegan Lane) and in front of the Student Services building on the Chico State campus Wednesdays, 12-3 p.m.

I

’m tempted to say to you Chico newcomers that I understand how getting to know someplace new might be daunting, but more than that, it’s exciting. You’re young and fearless, right? You should be up for anything. Plus, this is Chico, which, once you get to know it, you’ll find is about as chill, beautiful and fun a place as you could ever wish for. If you’re not 21, you’ll have to wait on some of the fun, but for the rest of you newcomers, if you’re game, allow this longtime local to give you a few nudges down some of the paths to the heart of Chico. This, of course, is just a starting point, a list of 10 tips from one insider’s brain. The rest is up to you.

1. Buy a

Monday night tickets are only $4. Pageant Theatre, 351 E. Sixth St. www.pageantchico.com

Go ahead and spend big for a tricked-out road or mountain bike; you’re certainly in an area with the natural features and a bike culture to justify splurging on something that will take you far down the roads and trails of Butte County. But your No. 1 Chico tool has to be a second-hand beater bike, an everyday cruiser that’ll get you from class to downtown, to the farmers’ market (Saturdays, 7 a.m.-1 p.m., Second and Wall streets), and to the barbecue down the block. You can just throw it in the pile of bikes on your buddy’s lawn and you won’t mind if it gets dinged up along the way. Plus, it’ll be less of a temptation for thieves (or at least you won’t be overly heartbroken if/when it’s ripped off).

3. Know the taco

beater bike

2. Cheapskate Mondays

Tucked away in a neighborhood a couple blocks from downtown, the intimate Pageant Theatre is beloved by locals for bringing art-house movies to our little out-of-the-way city: hard-hitting documentaries, European dramas, cult classics, Iranian horror, indie gems from America, and tons more. A good taco-truck taco can be as enjoyable as a steakhouse steak. And in Chico a good taco is very cheap (between $1 and $2), and the local creations are elegant in their simplicity—a double-layer of grilled corn tortillas topped with expertly rendered and seasoned meats, plus cilantro, onions and salsa, and if you must, a little cheese. It’s Chico’s signature food, it’s cheaper than cooking for yourself, and right now there probably is a food truck selling them within a few blocks of anywhere you are. From the taco, you’ll move on to our ridiculously portioned burritos, and then to the wide range of local street-food flavors at the monthly Fork in the Road rallies (first Wednesdays, Manzanita Place).

Visit www.facebook.com/ streetfoodchico to stay in the loop.

4. Know the Sanjay Listening to “Devastation Sounds” is not for the feint of soul. But if your school week has tamped you down into a ball of stress, listening to the “heaviest, rootsiest, smoothest” roots-reggae show on Fridays (3-6 p.m., on community

radio station KZFR, on the air at 90.1 FM and streaming live at www. kzfr.org) will light the fuse and shoot you out like a burning spear into the heart of the weekend. Don’t be scared. Host Sanjay Dev, one of the coolest cats you could ever know, is there to guide you.

5. Hot noise You will soon notice that living in an area where the average

temperature is 90-plus for four months straight and summer sometimes stretches from May to October has a cumulative effect on the local population. And when it comes to locally grown music, the extra sunshine manifests in a couple of ways: either a band takes cover during the day to preserve energy and good vibes for laying down swirling grooves that last through the night, or they fly straight into the sun, roaring and flailing and magnifying the heat and sweating out the frustrations of the day. Go out to a show and give in to either—the funky jam bands, or the metal/punk/indie crews—for a great communal release.

6. Opening night Chico’s scene is overflowing with energetic artists, and they are often at their best when they are welcoming the community at an opening reception for a new play or gallery exhibition. From the contemporary works of the Blue Room Theatre (139 W. First St.), to the cutting-edge art shows at Idea Fabrication Labs (603 Orange St.), to the multifaceted performance and visual art calendar of the 1078 Gallery (820 Broadway), nearly every week there is a colorful party being thrown and you are always invited. 8. Post-sunset swimming

Fall in love with Lower Bidwell Park: At the end of a long, hot day, take a moonlit dip in Sycamore Pool.

9. Meet/be a freak We are in a unique little bubble here in Chico, a place where it’s safe to let your freak flag fly. There is wonderful weirdness all around Chico and there’s always an interesting freak nearby, but it’s at the many uniquely Chico community events and happenings where you’ll find the whole tribe in full force. Keep an eye out for the Butcher Shop theater fest (Labor Day weekend), the Chico World Music Festival (September), Friday Night Concerts, the Chico News & Reviewproduced Keep Chico Weird Talent Show & Art Show (late January) and CAMMIES Music Festival (midApril), Endangered Species Faire

(mid-spring), Chico Bicycle Music Festival (mid-June), and anything put on by the Chikoko fashion/art collaborative or the Uncle Dad’s Art Collective.

10. Purchase one bolt, just one bolt A 3/4-inch-by-6-inch SAE grade 5 bolt is probably way more steel than you’ll ever need during your time in college, but if you needed one, Collier Hardware in downtown Chico (105 Broadway) can sell you one for only $3. The huge, old locally owned hardware store is a living piece of local history—looking much as it did when it opened in 1871—and it has walls of every size of bolt, nut, washer, screw and nail you could need. And you don’t have to purchase a big box; you can buy just a couple of nails to replace the fence board your roommate put his foot through last weekend. •

any of those reading this will have to wait a couple of years before legally enjoying Chico’s great local-music bars: The Maltese Bar & Tap Room, Lost on Main, LaSalles (to name a few). But thankfully, there are just as many all-ages options in town—1078 Gallery, Monstros Pizza, Café Coda, Has Beans Coffee & Tea, Energy Plant Arts—and a handful of passionate people who are contributing greatly to Chico’s vibrant scene by keeping these venues overflowing with live music. What follows is an introduction to some of the busier players in the local-music scene, including local punk-rocker Rachel Love, who gives the best and most succinct advice for newcomers wishing to get plugged into the scene: “Go to shows and get out; don’t just study all the time.” Amen!

“I think that a lot of the magic of the Chico sound and vibe is that we’re all crammed into a really small area.” That’s Josh Hegg, local musician and promoter and one of the people whose work has contributed a lot to Chico’s magic over the past few years. The Chico State music grad and celebrated local keyboardist is a member of two popular bands (jazz crew Bogg and prog-rockers Clouds on Strings), a frequent sideman for other groups, and a member of the very productive and creative music/theater/

dance performance troupe Uncle Dad’s Art Collective. And as music committee chair at the 1078 Gallery (820 Broadway), he was one of the driving forces behind turning the gallery into a busy, all-ages, livemusic venue that is known for bringing a wide range of performances to the gallery’s programming. “I try to book the bands that are doing something a little different,” he said. “I admire that.” That approach fits with the gallery’s overall mission of showcasing new and experimental art, and it’s resulted in a very eclectic schedule that includes everything from experimental, metal and indie to classical, jazz and rock, sometimes all in the same week. But a few nights each month, the tables are stacked in the corners and the sawdust is sent flying by the moshing feet of a packed house of local punks, metalheads and other misfits enjoying another night of energetic live music. “Basically, all-ages DIY punk, metal, alternative, folk shows is what we mainly do,” said Rachel Love, one of the ringleaders of the volunteer-run Chico Area Punks crew that has been booking and producing all-ages shows at Monstros for nearly a decade. Love has been in Chico for 16 years, and has split her energies between playing punk music (her current bands being Badger and #whitegirlwasted) and advocating for just the sort of egalitarian institution that she and the Chico Area Punks have built with Monstros. “It’s a safe space for anybody to come to regardless of who they are or what kind of background they come from,”

Since 2001, the singer/songwriter has been a part of Chico’s most popular open mic (first as the sound tech, and for the last five years as the host): the Thursday Open Mic, at Has Beans Internet Café (510 Main St.), Thursdays, 7-10 p.m. “I refer to it as the circus at Fifth and Main,” he said, explaining that the venue’s downtown location and picture windows add to the visibility and energy of the weekly event. “It’s pretty lively. It’s the best part of my week. “We see everything. We see hiphop, spoken word, one-act plays,” Casamajor added, “but mostly it’s people with guitars.” All are invited to perform, as long as there’s room, no matter how polished (or not) the player. If the signups hit 15—and they usually do, 18-20 is the average—then the rule is only five minutes per act. There are a few other weekly all-ages open mics spread around town, including Tuesdays, 7 p.m., at Shenanigan’s, and Saturdays out at Scotty’s Boat Landing on the river. www.hasbeans.com

NEARLY 11 MILES LONG, BIDWELL PARK IS THE GIANT HEART OF CHICO

ome of you fresh-faced college students might be under the miserably misguided impression that the center of the Chico universe is the intersection of Fifth and Ivy streets. But I’d argue that the real, natural heart of Chico is the One-Mile Recreation Area (named such because it’s just a mile from Bidwell Mansion) in Lower Bidwell Park. I remember accidentally discovering it back when I was a freshfaced and miserably misguided college student on exchange to Chico State from the

University of Alaska Fairbanks. Within the first couple of days after our grief-stricken parents left us to our own devices, my roommate and I biked around downtown and happened upon Sycamore Pool, aka One-Mile Pool. I’d never seen anything like it—a concrete pool built in the middle of a creek, complete with lifeguards and sunbathers. Out of nowhere, it felt like we were at the beach. (This was especially shocking to someone from Alaska, where they don’t do stuff like dam rivers for recreational purposes

and women in bikinis are understandably rare.) Now, I have the enormous privilege of living pretty much right up in Lower Park. My apartment’s second-floor balcony looks out over the bridge at

Sycamore Pool—fabulous, I know—and I always find it kind of unbelievable to wake up and ride my bike over that bridge and through Annie’s Glenn on my way to work. It’s the sort of repetition that could make a person take beautiful things for granted. So, I remind myself to appreciate it all: the reflection of sycamore trees in the glassy, undisturbed surface of the pool in the morning; the sound of Big Chico Creek spilling over the dam and fish ladder; the canopy of mighty and ancient oak trees teeming with chirping birds. It’s a daily reminder of how insanely good we Chicoans have it, how lucky we are to live in a city practically built around and into a green space like Bidwell Park. I mean, the park is literally a gift bestowed by Annie Bidwell, the wife of Chico founder John Bidwell and an iconic local historical figure in her own right. (As new—albeit perhaps temporary—Chicoans you’re, like, fundamentally required to know who John and Annie B are, so look them up.) It’s also a reminder of how people who say there’s nothing to do in Chico are insane. I mean, you could devote the entirety of your college tenure to exploring the 3,670 acres of Bidwell Park (don’t actually do that; also read books). The bulk of that acreage is PARKS continued on page 30

start harshly at dawn despite proximity to my bedroom window. So, you want to get started? Here are a few suggestions: See a sunset from the Monkey Face rock formation along the North Rim in Upper Park. Take a midnight dip in Sycamore Pool. And, most important, hike the Yahi Trail, which begins near Horseshoe Lake and mostly follows the creek upstream for 4 miles along its north side, providing easy access to popular swimming spots: Alligator, Bear, Salmon and Brown’s holes (try to restrain from giggling about that last one’s name). If it’s your maiden hike, choosing the Yahi will leave a first impression that will make you want to spend as much of your time as possible in Bidwell Park. That’s how I feel about it. Like so many Chico State students before me, I found Five-and-I before I found Bidwell Park, but the party scene got old pretty much immediately, while I’m still amazed by and attracted to the park on a daily basis.

ating is one of those things that, sure, we need to do to live, but it also can be a fun and tastebud-tantalizing way to spend a long lunch break or an evening with friends. So, when you’re not stuffing your face with a Hot Pocket on your way to class or grabbing a quick bite on campus, it’s good to know where to go to satisfy those hunger pangs. Luckily, Chico has a ton of good, inexpensive restaurants that will do just that. If you’re new in town, it’s understandable that you might gravitate toward the names you know. While at times a $1 spicy chicken sandwich from Jack in the Box may be just what the doctor ordered, you’ll find more satisfying fare when you avoid the chain gang and seek out the locally owned establishments FOOD continued on page 34

Spiteri’s Deli (971 East Ave., www.spiterisdeli.com) for their amazing sandwich and salad selection.

1550 East avEnuE secret to this spot’s success is in its cornmeal-brushed, cracker crust. And in true Midwestern fashion (owner Jim Flanagan hails from the Windy City), their pies are cut into square slices. Try the Chicken Cordon Blu (chicken breast, Canadian bacon, onions and green scallions with a white garlic ranch sauce and provolone) or anything that includes Mamma’s famous meatballs. 1008 W. Speaking of burritos … Breakfast Buzz is one of those restaurants where you go with a group of friends the day after an epic night and drown your hangover in eggs, bacon and home-fried potatoes (put them in a burrito with your choice of more than a dozen add-ons for a particularly delicious meal). Awesome diner food, no frills attached. Beware the temptation of the bottomless champagne brunch on weekends. Tip: Get two-for-one breakfast burritos on Tuesdays. Score! 208 Cedar St.

Sipho’s Restaurant & Cafe Chico has a wide variety of international cuisines to choose from, and Sipho’s is one of the best. Owner Newton “Sipho” Merritt hails from Jamaica, and that is the theme of his restaurant. The jerk chicken falls off the bone, you can sample more exotic dishes like ox tail and curried goat, or try Jamaica’s national dish, ackee and salt fish, with the ackee fruit that melts in your mouth. Bonus: Some weekends feature live reggae on the patio. 1228 Dayton Road, www.siphosjamaica.com
