G Coming together for Earth This week we present our Green Issue, published on the run-up to Earth Day

Mentoring makes a difference never thought I’d be a leader—because of this class, I am “I that leader.” “My confidence has improved greatly.” “I want to be a leader who’s responsible and dedicated to my

goals, and I’ll do that by making my own choices and not letting people make choices for me.” “This program has taught me to believe in myself and not give up on my goals no matter how difficult the situation is.”

These are words written by just a few of the students who have completed programs facilitated by the Junior Leadership Development Program (JLDP), founded three years ago by Jacob Peterson. JLDP offers education and mentoring to at-risk teens in Butte County, assisting them in by graduating from high school and creating Shannon Rooney solid post-secondary paths as well as supporting them in becoming community The author teaches leaders. This is especially important in Butte County, where the high school dropout rate is high (9.2 percent). JLDP is distinctive as a mentoring program because it provides in-depth training to its mentors.

Peterson, the program’s director, knows what it’s like to be a child in a disadvantaged situation—that was his experience while growing up in Roseville (see “Giving back,” Newslines, May 29, 2014). What changed Peterson’s life was that a mentor came along and helped him gain the confidence to apply to and complete college—something he thought he’d never do.

JLDP recently secured a downtown office space above Naked Lounge on Second Street. This office will be used not only for administrative activities, but also to provide additional help to at-risk youth. But the program needs help to sustain its efforts helping local kids have hope. This entirely grassroots organization is particularly worthy of community assistance because it’s helping teens who may not have the support system needed to graduate and pursue higher education.

The organization has a fundraising event on April 24—a spring gala dinner-dance that will include music by the Jeff Pershing Band along with considerable other fun. Businesses and organizations are invited to become table sponsors for this event. Tickets are available online at http://jldpspringgala.event brite.com. (April 22). It’s also the eighth anniversary of Greenways, our weekly sustainability section. Over the years, we’ve published more than 400 environmentally themed stories, and that’s not including the ones that ran as a news or cover story.

CN&R’s readers have largely embraced our coverage of the local environmental realm, but there are always holdouts. We hope to win them over at some point.

For our part, it’s hard to understand why some people oppose the environmental movement. Even from a business perspective, it makes sense to protect our natural resources. For example, think about what life would be like if we didn’t have clean water to drink and to irrigate our farmland.

Consider what it would be like to rely on some far-away place for this lifesustaining element.

We’re talking about major financial consequences on top of quality-oflife issues.

We certainly don’t want Butte County to end up resembling the armpit of California (i.e., the San Joaquin Valley), where years of irresponsible groundwater pumping for farming in the parched region have led to subsidence.

Have you driven through there lately? It’s basically a sinking desert with toxic air and, thanks to fracking, some poisoned aquifers. We’ll pass, thanks.

Nope, we like life here in the North State, and we’d like our children and their children to enjoy it as well. It’s a shame, then, that environmentalism is so polarizing and that we can’t come together for a common goal (i.e., banning fracking in the county).

It doesn’t need to be that way. After all, the health of our communities, of our planet, affects everyone. If we can get past partisanship on green issues, the world will be a better place. Ω

Action on the home front Over the past couple of years, we’ve listened to a lot of noise about local

homeless citizens. We’ve seen them referred to as “the homeless” and heard many lifelong Chico residents called “transients.” We’ve seen them splashed across the front page of the local daily with demoralizing headlines and photos. More recently, we’ve seen Facebook pages dedicated to bashing them. In short, the community’s population of homeless individuals has been demonized and further marginalized.

That’s why it’s so refreshing to see the progress of the North Valley Housing Trust (NVHT) on the nonprofit’s plans to help provide real solutions to the issue of homelessness. The organization, through a grant and fundraising, has taken in over $1 million that will pay for the creation of affordable living spaces for homeless individuals or those who are in danger of losing their shelter.

Its plans also call for the incorporation of social support systems, such as counseling and job training, which are a vital component of helping people transition into housing and stay there (see Meredith J. Cooper’s report on page 10).

Wisely, NVHT believes in the “housing first” model, a concept that prioritizes moving those on the streets into stable homes. While that may sound like the right thing to do from a moral perspective, recent studies have shown that it’s also a financially prudent move. A report by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte found that it costs far less to house people ($14,000 per year through a program in that state) than for taxpayers to foot the bills associated with the medical and jail costs of a chronically ill homeless person ($39,458).

NVHT is now looking for partners to bring the vision of these supportive living spaces to life. We hope their search turns up creative proposals and that the public gets behind this worthy effort. Ω

For a couple of years during college, I lived alone on my family’s farm west of the Sacramento River, near Hamilton City. Well, technically, I shared it with my German shepherd and three horses.

I have a great affection for the property. My grandparents bought it before I was born and farmed almonds and walnuts and ran a small herd of cattle there. I grew up in the East Bay, where there was plenty to do, but some of my favorite childhood memories are of visiting “the ranch.” There, I’d explore Stony Creek, tubing down the waterway with my brother and cousins and making forts in the arundo grasses that line it.

As an adult, at certain times of the year, I’d chase off trespassers, mostly hunters who sneaked around during dove and quail season. I took to greeting them while carrying my late grandfather’s shotgun. Not pointed at them, mind you.

“Hello, can I help you?” I’d ask, politely. “Do you have permission to hunt here?”

Of course, I knew they didn’t. Most of the time, they’d sheepishly apologize and make a quick exit. There were a few who protested, which elicited some colorful language from me telling them to beat it. I mostly was concerned about the welfare of my animals. More than once they and I were rained down upon by buckshot.

One day, a helicopter dropped a machine strapped to a parachute just a couple dozen yards from my back porch. I saw Red Dawn as a kid, so the first thing I did was reach for the 12-guage. Within a few minutes, a uniformed stranger came out of nowhere with a long cord to plug into the device and to other ones in the area. I greeted him like I would any strange man without permission to be there. He quickly explained that the equipment was to check for gas in this bucolic neighborhood.

Turns out there was a lot of it. Over the next few years, I watched a boom in gas-well construction. There’s even a fracked well in Glenn County, very near the Sacramento River. Considering it’s located within the boundaries of the Lower Tuscan Aquifer—our source of drinking water—it’s a scary prospect.

That’s why I was so baffled when Maureen Kirk was the only member of the Butte County Board of Supervisors who favored a county ordinance prohibiting hydraulic fracturing a few months ago. After all, the process requires the use of vast amounts of water mixed with toxic chemicals. Risking contamination of the Tuscan Aquifer to enrich private companies and a few landowners is a fool’s gamble. Moreover, we’re in the middle of a historic drought. That level of water waste alone is reason enough to ban the practice.

Today, my father and stepmom, along with my uncle and cousin, live on that beautiful property outside of Hamilton City. They aren’t environmentalists by any stretch. But if someone poisoned their well, I think they’d convert quicker than you can say Remington.

Re “Money talks …” (Newslines, by Robert Speer, April 9): Days before the Chico City Council voted to approve the $1.5 million pay and pension package for the police, I sent its members an email.

The city clerk placed an identical paper copy into their information packets.

The email simply asked the council members to disclose their connections to the Chico police force before they voted to spend millions of taxpayer dollars. At least three of them received endorsements and/or cash donations during their political campaigns.

Police endorsements are a valuable way to harvest votes. Tally up the police force, their spouses/significant others, and their friends— then take that number and double it for other sympathetic public service employees and it becomes easy to get 1,000 votes. Certainly enough to tip an election.

Predictably, no public disclosures were given to the taxpayers that night. Don’t the taxpayers deserve to know?

Honest disclosure takes courage. Honest disclosure defines trustworthiness. Honest disclosure is true transparency in government. Next time you hear the word “transparency” echoed throughout the City Council chambers, be ready to hear more fractured fairy tales.

I was greatly relieved to hear that the rumors on both counts, most especially regarding the district attorney, were false. The arguing by proponents of marijuana about Butte County’s enforcement of Measure A is misguided. Instead of being grateful for the county defining what it will tolerate, the marijuana promoters clamor for more. And more. More stench of neighborhoods. More carving up hillsides. More illegal diversion of water. More pot for stoners. More thieves in the neighborhood.

There is no prescription from legitimate doctors that legally entitles you to possession or growing pot—regardless of Measure A, B or Prop. 215. A “recommendation” is not a prescription. Doctors are not allowed to prescribe Schedule 1 substances, which include LSD, marijuana, heroin, meth and PCP. Marijuana possession and cultivation is a federal crime, which for a first offense can land you in jail for five years and a $250,000 fine.

Maybe the feds will look the other way; maybe they won’t. Maybe the federal law will change in the future—but for now, it remains completely enforceable.

Measure A was a compromise among our community about what we will tolerate. But for you stoners out there with bogus claims of illnesses treated by the snake-oil of pot, please remember we technically don’t have to tolerate any of it. Please abide by Measure A, and we will get along.

More e-cig research Re “Campaign vape trail” (The Pulse, April 2): Dr. Karen Smith, director of California Department of Public Health, noted that aggressive marketing has helped to raise the use of e-cigarettes. Advertising budgets are big, reeling in nonsmokers and young people to start or never stop. Research is scant. What are the long-term effects? What about second hand exposure?

The first federal law pertaining to the dangers of smoking appeared on cigarettes in 1965. We now know that heart disease, emphysema, lung and throat cancer and many other health risks are related to cigarette smoking. Given this opportunity to not smoke, are we really going to use e-cigarettes?

The number of teens and tweens using these products doubled between 2011 and 2012.

Manufacturers aren’t required to disclose ingredients; they don’t have to put danger warnings on their products. In some cities, laws have been passed about how people can purchase or use e-cigarettes. We need more research. If they want to market their product as a safe alternative to smoking, they need to be subject to rigorous FDA scrutiny and regulations. We need to know the true nature and danger of these products.

Instead, Mr. Coolidge decided to squander his time on the trivial by focusing on the dubious proposition that fireworks sales will help solve our city’s problems. Never mind the stratospheric fire conditions we will face on July 4.

Wouldn’t it be great if Coolidge used his advertising talents to bolster a citywide campaign to cut water use by 50 percent? Or how about applying for a water bond grant to construct small and large groundwater-recharge basins rather than dumping stormwater into creeks? Our groundwater is dropping at a distressing rate, far faster than it is recharging. Chico citizens must realize that things we take for granted, like water, may be in very short supply for our children. Mr. Coolidge, please reset your bearings on the daunting challenges of today. Our very survival is at stake.

Do something I am sick and tired of hearing everyone complain in this town about the vagrants. If you have a problem, do something about it.

Complaining about it does not fix it. In the time it took you to complain about it to your friends, or on Facebook, you could have come up with an idea to fix it. Why waste all your precious time on negative energy?

Like, when it comes to the vagrants and our beautiful downtown parks, instead of them making us uncomfortable and running us out, we need to make them uncomfortable and leave. Or get them to respect our town.

I also keep hearing people talk about, or post pictures on Facebook of, vagrants washing their clothes in the fountain. Well, say something; tell them to stop.

Instead of complaining about it, do something, say something. We need to take back our town.

Local women’s rights activist Rain Scher, 28, was arrested on Jan. 3 for being topless in City Plaza. Now, with the charges dropped, she’s organizing a topless ride through Lower Bidwell Park and downtown Chico.

CHECKING OUT

After more than 20 years of prosecuting bad check writers and returning more than $4.6 million in losses to local businesses, the Butte County District Attorney’s Office’s Bad Check Unit is shutting down.

DA Mike Ramsey said the drop in the number of bad checks written in recent years, from a height of 500 a month down to about 75 a month, and the drop in fees garnered from prosecution that helped fund the unit forced the closure. He suggests that merchants evaluate their check-acceptance policies. Bad checks can be referred to private collection agencies and local law enforcement will respond to those written in excess of $950.

“It is with great reluctance and sadness that I take this action, but the financial realities of a more modern banking system and a lack of prosecutorial resources forces this move,” Ramsey said in a press release.

TEACHERS APPROVE CONTRACT

Following a lengthy and controversial back and forth, the Chico Unified Teachers Association (CUTA) voted Monday (April 13) to ratify the tentative contract agreement with Chico Unified School District for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 school years.

The contract negotiations slogged along for more than a year and reached an impasse in December. Then the state stepped in, forming a fact-finding team, which apparently helped get negotiations back on track. The contract calls for 3 percent salary increase retroactive to last July 1 and a 6 percent increase beginning next Jan. 1. The vote was about 60 percent in favor.

“I am glad this was resolved without a strike,” said CUTA President Kevin Moretti.

The district’s board of trustees was scheduled to vote on the contract Wednesday (April 15), after the CN&R’s deadline.

COP BEATING VIDEO GOES NATIONAL

A video of a Chico police officer beating a DUI suspect with his baton was recently picked up by national celebrity and entertainment website TMZ.com.

The 19-second clip shows an officer repeatedly clubbing Sean Reardon, 30, as another officer restrains him on the ground, but it lacks context. On Feb. 18, police reportedly attempted to stop Reardon for a vehicle code violation at Fifth and Main streets, but he pulled away and collided with two vehicles before stopping near Sixth Street and Normal Avenue. Reardon then exited the vehicle, at first complying with officers to lie on the ground and then allegedly rising and reaching into his pockets and waistband. He got on the ground willingly, but a struggle—a recording of which was later broadcast by Action News Now—ensued as officers attempted to cuff him.

Reardon (pictured on Feb. 23) has pleaded not guilty to multiple felonies, including recklessly evading police, hit and run, resisting arrest and DUI within 10 years of a previous DUI. According to TMZ, Reardon has filed a claim against the city.

“The way the court system looks at 314 is that you need to specifically expose your genitals, which breasts are not,” Scher said. “It also has to be with the intent to offend or arouse somebody in a sexual way. So, they have to prove your intent. Simply being without a shirt in public is in no way indecent exposure.”

And while municipal code would take precedent over state law, Chico doesn’t have an ordinance banning toplessness, either, confirmed Chief Deputy District Attorney Francisco Pancho Zarate. (The City Council did consider banning nudity within city limits back in 2003, however, due to complaints of skinny-dippers at Sycamore Pool.)

Meanwhile, many women around the world—including in other cities in California—aren’t afforded such freedoms, and some willingly risk arrest on International Topless Day to protest sexist laws, support positive body image and normalize female breasts. In Chico, participants of such events have faced minimal harassment, Scher said. “Every time, we’ve had park rangers and police tell us we weren’t breaking the law.”

Scher’s arrest has stirred local activists to organize the Toptional Ride, an all-gender-inclusive ride through Lower Bidwell Park and the heart of downtown set for Sunday (April 19).

Riders will cover their upper bodies however they see fit.

The highly visible demonstration will kick off Chico State’s Take Back the Night Week (April 20-24), which includes a series of educational events hosted by the Gender and Sexuality Equity Center (GSEC) to raise awareness of rape culture on campus. The week culminates in the Take Back the Night march through campus and downtown on Thursday (April 23).

As Scher explained, it made sense to coordinate the efforts of GSEC and the Toptional Ride.

“We want to feel comfortable in our bodies, but we also want to feel safe in our bodies,” she said. “Take Back the Night shares our message that, no matter what she’s wearing—or not—it’s not an invitation to assault her.”

Sexual assault on college campuses has

been a hot topic of late, receiving heavy coverage by the national media due in part to Rolling Stone’s now-infamous article, “A Rape on Campus,” about a female student at the University of Virginia who claimed to have been gangraped at a frat party. (The magazine has since retracted the article.)

But it’s still difficult for feminist organizations like GSEC to jumpstart productive dialogue about the underlying issues, said Emilee Hunt, GSEC’s women’s program coordinator.

“We need more administrative conversations, get the higher-ups involved,” she said. “If we had more widespread conversations from administration, it would be easier … to target the students who aren’t already engaged.”

This is the first year that Hunt is spearheading Take Back the Night. It’s also the first with only one march; previously, they were held every semester. To compensate, Hunt decided to expand the event to a full week of educational programs. With the help of off-campus organizations like Planned Parenthood, GSEC has also conducted more outreach than ever before, Hunt said, hoping the march will draw 500 participants. On campus, GSEC interns have been making a concerted effort to involve Greek organizations, which make up 10 percent of the student body.

“Having specific outreach to men will help,” Hunt said. “More fraternities than sororities have responded to our inquiries, so that’s pleasing. We’re highlighting how the negative images of fraternities are affecting them personally. In order to get back to the true values of why frats are established, we need to change those images—there needs to be personal investment.”

GSEC intern Mary Modisette has been giving short presentations on rape culture to Greeks. She said she believes that it’s important to reach those students, but the responsibility for addressing sexual assault at the university isn’t theirs alone.

“Especially when it comes to rape culture, there are a lot of stigmas and stereotypes,” she said. “All of the pressure and blame is placed on Greeks.”

Modisette’s sociology project on the sexual objectification of women’s nipples forged the connection between Take Back the Night and the Toptional Ride.

“I really wanted to focus on breasts because at a certain point in history it was also illegal for men to be topless,” she said. “So, you figure, ‘If it’s legal for them now, why can’t women have the same rights?’”

Modisette’s search for a local movement along those lines led her to Scher and her organization, Chico Breast Liberation. And since GSEC also strives for women’s empowerment, the two parties agreed to align their upcoming efforts.

“The way it relates back to the Toptional Ride is just embracing our bodies,” Modisette said. “Women are told their sexuality should be controlled and hidden, when they should be able to embrace it.” Ω

Train car troubles Chico Art Center leaders say there’s more to Empire Coffee eviction

Saturday (April 11), a group of arts aficionados viewed the Lofastprivate troves of four notable local collectors during “Treasures a Collection,” an annual fundraising event for the Chico Art

Center. The main topic of conversation that afternoon wasn’t the works on the walls of the collectors’ homes, however, according to Jackie McClain, president of CAC’s board of directors, but instead involved the unrenewed lease for Empire Coffee, currently housed in a vintage train car owned by the organization.

“The thing we heard most that day was, ‘What’s the other side of the story?’” McClain said during a recent interview at the center. The questions were spurred by an April 8 article in the Chico EnterpriseRecord about the center’s decision to not extend the lease for Empire Coffee owner Lindsay Brothers, which the CAC supporters claim didn’t tell the whole story.

“The implication of the article was very clear—that she had a thriving, successful business and that we are kicking her out to take it over,” said board member Sandra Flake. “In actuality, we had a bad landlord-lessee relationship [with Brothers], revenues have fluctuated a great deal and have been declining, and there’s been no significant growth in the three years she’s run it, although the economy has improved considerably.

“The truth is we wouldn’t have been likely to renew her lease to begin with.”

was just a shell—and a city liability—that had been razed by fire twice before the center assumed responsibility. He noted the CAC converted the bare-bones building into a modern, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant space.

The center purchased the train car with a combination of gifts, fundraising and a community block grant, with volunteers providing the labor. The group’s initial plan was to run its own coffee shop, but the board decided to rent it out when the restoration was completed in 2007, charging low rent—$575 monthly—in exchange for 3.5 percent of profits. It has been rented to three tenants in the past eight years, with Brothers taking control in 2012.

Finding a solution Local trust offers funding for very low-income housing hen James Coles was attending college at W the University of Utah, he started volunteering at a local homeless shelter, tutoring children there. In the nearly 20 years since, he’s found himself continuously driven to help those less fortunate. Finally, he’s in a position to really make a difference.

As director of the North Valley Housing Trust (NVHT), Coles is excited about new opportunities to create affordable places to live for local individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

“It costs the community much more to keep people homeless than to get them into subsidized housing,” Coles said during a recent interview at NVHT headquarters in the Chico Municipal Building. “We’re talking in terms of public safety, public health, incarceration … Not only is it the right thing to do, it also makes good public policy sense.”

NVHT is a fairly new endeavor. Born out of a work group created by the city in 2010—when Coles was the city’s housing manager—it has evolved to become what it is today, a housing trust fund. Last year, it started to fundraise in earnest and ultimately received a competitive $500,000 grant from the state, in addition to $650,000 in donations, many from local banks, generated through a partnership with 3CORE, a nonprofit economic development agency that operates in Butte, Glenn and Tehama counties. This year, NVHT created a board of directors and now it’s looking for people or organizations interested in putting that fundraising money to good use.

Today (April 16) at 10 a.m., NVHT is hosting a meeting for anyone interested in learning more about the organization or networking with potential partners. It’s announced a request for proposals from those interested in creating affordable housing that incorporates social support systems, like job training and counseling, that can help residents become self-sufficient.

“Proposals should include housing and a support network,” Coles said. “We’re looking for creative ideas in addressing this problem.”

Applicants could be from the nonprofit or forprofit realm and might even be a partnership among more than one entity, Coles said. “You could have a builder who has building experience, James Coles aims to create more affordable housing in Chico through the North Valley Housing Trust, which is offering up to $1.15 million to a worthy local proposal.

Looking outside of Chico, he said, there are other communities whose housing trust funds have proven their worth. In San Luis Obispo County, for example, the housing trust fund has created 218 affordable homes in its 15 years in existence. In 2012, the Redding Housing Trust Fund provided the finances to transform a 60-unit apartment building into affordable housing for very low-income seniors.

“All communities are grappling with this issue,” Coles said. “It’s not unique to Chico.

The midsize rural areas are facing more of a challenge with homelessness than very small towns or even larger urban centers.

“We all know there’s a problem—now we’re looking to provide a solution and a model, a foundation to build on.”

Volunteer efforts to monitor Big Chico Creek continue

B

ig Chico Creek, the waterway that originates at an elevation of 5,400 feet in the eastern foothills and flows 45 miles to the Sacramento River, has garnered an increasing amount of attention in the past dozen-plus years from ecologically minded groups looking to monitor its health.

One of those groups is the Big Chico Creek Stream Team, which gathered Saturday (April 11) at Five-Mile Recreation Area for a three-hour lesson in how to gather water-quality data at various spots along the creek. This marks its 13th year monitoring the local waterway. Three days later, ecoconsulting firm FISHBIO released the results of its second annual fish count, used as another way to measure the creek’s health.

The Stream Team, which attracted 32 volunteers at this year’s training, is headed by local biologist Timmarie Hamill, who’s been active with the operation since it began.

“We get anywhere from 10 to this many every month,” she said, nodding toward the gathering of volunteers. “We divide into groups and have team leaders. Some of them have been coming here for 10 years, so they are training the new volunteers today.”

The data gathering, held on the second Saturday of the month beginning in May and running through October, is conducted at 10 spots along the creek from the upper watershed in Butte Meadows, down through Forest Ranch and Upper, Middle and Lower Bidwell Park, through the city along Rose Avenue and out to where it empties into the Sacramento River.

The data documents the water’s

pH levels, clarity, temperature and oxygen levels.

“We also do bio-assessment, which means taking a look at the aquatic diversity of the juvenile insect nymphs that live in the creeks,” Hamill explained. “If they are there for two or three years and known to be sensitive to pollution, then you can assume the creek is in pretty good shape. But if you just have black flies and roundworms, you’d be concerned.”

Collecting data over time allows the Stream Team to track changes, which are beginning to show, Hamill said.

“We see with urban development and more people in the valley a slight decline in species like macro-invertebrates and aquatic invertebrates,” she said “That is due to both changing natural conditions as well as ones that humans are having an influence on.”

The information gathered is submitted to the State Water Resources Control Board, which conducts a Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (SWAMP).

Erick Burres, the citizen monitoring coordinator for the board, was on hand Saturday to help coordinate the effort. He told the local volunteers that Chico’s Stream Team model will be used as a pilot program for other citizen monitoring groups taking part in SWAMP. “Throughout California, we have hundreds of organizations where volunteers come out to test the water to produce actionable data so we can better steward and protect and restore our streams,” he said.

The most recent SWAMP report was released in 2012 and the Central Valley region assessment concluded: “Some to moderate water

toxicity was widespread throughout the agricultural and urban-agricultural areas in the upper Sacramento River watershed, including the Colusa Basin, the area surrounding the Sutter Buttes, and the eastern valley floor between Chico and Lincoln.”

It also reported that “sediments downstream of the city of Chico showed some to no toxicity, while downstream of Yuba City, Gilsizer Slough showed high toxicity at multiple sites.”

On Tuesday (April 14), FISHBIO,

which works with the Stream Team, released its 2014 Big Chico Creek fish count based on the observations of divers wearing snorkeling gear. It compares statistics from surveys taken in 2013. The rainbow trout population appears to have dropped by as much as 75 percent at the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve, the report reveals, and only two brown trout were observed there last year, compared with 16 in 2013.

Other fish populations remained consistent, including the Sacramento sucker, of which 38 were counted in 2013 and 36 in 2014.

Gabriel Kopp, director of operations for FISHBIO, cautioned that there are several potential explanations for the apparent drop in the trout population.

“Fish move around a lot and might move and collect in places that we can’t see,” he said. “That could be because they are seeking oxygenized areas of the creek. So the numbers might be shifting [to other parts of the creek] rather than plummeting.”

The issue is a proposed project that would allow for north-to-south water transfers over the next 10 years.

“No one even knows about this 10-year water transfer. Nobody. It’s off the radar,” Vlamis said during a recent interview.

On March 20, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the San Luis & DeltaMendota Water Authority—a state water district that represents agricultural water districts in the south—released a 260-page final environmental impact report on the proposed water transfers that would run from 2015 to 2024. A press release says the “project is aimed at providing water users with immediately implementable and flexible water supplies to help alleviate shortages due to drought.”

The Bureau of Reclamation, which is the largest wholesale water supplier in the country, is not expected to make a final decision on the project until April 20 at the earliest.

The project first came to light locally in January 2011 during a long-awaited meeting hosted by the bureau and the San Luis & Delta-Mendota Water Authority.

Prior to that meeting, Vlamis told the CN&R: “This is what we’ve been clamoring for for more than a decade and a half.”

She was referring to 1994, when she was executive director of the Butte Environmental Council. That year the Richvale and Western Canal water districts sold a significant amount of surface water to Southern California and pumped groundwater to replace it. It turned out to be a drought year and, as a result, a number

of agricultural and residential wells in the Durham area went dry.

But now Vlamis and other local water defenders are critical of the 10-year project and how it’s been presented, even though they helped get it launched. In 2013, AquAlliance sued the Bureau of Reclamation over one-year water transfers it had made for more than a decade.

“Part of the resolution of that lawsuit was that they would do a comprehensive study on long-term transfers since the one-year transfers have been happening in something like 12 out of the past 14 years anyway,” said Jim Brobeck, water policy analyst for AquAlliance.

The EIR did just that. The transfers, it explains, would include groundwater substitution, cropland idling, reservoir releases or conservation. The project would connect “willing sellers” north of the Sacramento San Joaquin River Delta with “willing buyers” to the south and the Bay Area, meaning it’s at each party’s discretion—it’s not a 10-year, set-in-stone plan.

The EIR, which found “no significant, unavoidable impacts on environmental resources,” also says that “sellers not specifically listed in this document may be able to sell water to the buyers as long as: the water that is made available occurs in the same watershed or groundwater basin analyzed in this [EIR], and the total quantity of water proposed for sale does not exceed the maximum listed for each region or type of transfer in any given transfer year …”

Included among the local willing sellers listed in the EIR are the Glenn-Colusa Irrigation District, which could sell up to 91,000 acre-feet of water per year; the Butte Water District, which could sell 17,000 acre-feet a year; and the South Sutter County Water District, which could sell 15,000 acre-feet per year.

To put those numbers in perspective, the city of Chico uses about 30,000 acre-feet of water annually, according to the Butte County Water and Resource Conservation Department.

Chair Doug Teeter.

“Butte County and its surrounding region have a vested interest in assuring that the Long Term Water Transfers Program has the least impact upon the community, agricultural economy and environment,” the letter begins.

“Much of our local water supply comes from the various groundwater basins throughout the region that are recharged through these creeks and rivers,” it continues.

But the letter then laments the short period of time—60 days—the county was given to comment. It notes that, based on a preliminary review, the impact report “is seriously flawed and will need to be revised and recirculated.”

Brobeck applauds the county’s response.

“That is a very open document that shows the locally elected government is against the long-term transfer,” he said.

There likely will be at least a year’s delay in local transfers if the Bureau of Reclamation adopts the plan. Vickie Newlin, with the county’s Water and Resource Conservation Department, said that Butte County water districts, those potential “willing sellers,” have agreed to not take part in water transfers this year if the Department of Water Resources cuts local allotments. Those allotments, she added, could drop to 50 percent of a normal year and are expected to be announced later this month. □

Lyon Books’ final chapter

Baking with heart (not wheat) Jennifer Coles has been baking since childhood. Her mother would always say to her, “Stir the butter with love,” a philosophy she still uses today and was instrumental when she started her business, CoCo Gluten-Free Baking Co., in 2012 out of her home. The company, named after her daughter’s nickname, has since taken to the streets thanks to a Kickstarter campaign that allowed Coles to purchase a trailer. Now, she takes her gluten-free treats across town in “the glutenfree-mobile” with stops at the Saturday farmers’ market, Fork in the Road and the Thursday Night Market. She lives in Chico with her husband and two children, and while they may be her biggest fans, she admits they are also her toughest critics. Her personal motto: “Just because you’re on a restricted diet doesn’t mean you have to eat cardboard.”

Tell me a little about your business.

I started about three years ago baking from my home kitchen. I opened with the cottage food operation—it’s a special permit you can get to bake out of your home from the county. It took off, it was crazy. I got a lot of business and decided to expand.

I had a Kickstarter campaign last summer to get my trailer and then I started doing events and the farmers’ market and

To what do you attribute such success?

Gluten-free is a lot more popular now; there are a lot of people getting diagnosed with celiac disease and also people who are just doing it for other dietary reasons. We have a really good product—I think that helps, too.

What kind of products do you offer?

We offer mostly sweets: cakes, cupcakes, cookies, lots of sweet bars, but we do breads as well, pizza crusts, sandwich bread, dinner rolls. We also sell wholesale to five local coffee shops in town: Bidwell Perk, Naked Lounge, Coffee Ranch, Midtown Local and It’s a Grind Coffeehouse.

Why start a bakery?

I’ve always loved to bake. I grew up baking with my mom, so when my kids went back to school I was twiddling my thumbs and trying to figure out what I was

going to do with myself. I’ve been wheat-free for about 15 or 16 years and my family eats glutenfree, so it just made sense to put it together.

What kinds of ingredients do you use?

We use organic when we can, local ingredients when we can.

My standard is it has to be better than regular baked goods. It can’t just be good enough for gluten-free—that doesn’t work for me. My husband is my taste tester so if it passes his test, then I know I’m going to sell it, and he’s not gluten-free. It has to be good and it feels good to make things for people who don’t normally get to eat things that are sweet.

What have been some of the challenges?

The biggest challenge is trying to do it all by myself. I do the social media, the accounting and the baking and the deliveries.

When Heather Lyon opened Lyon Books in 2003 with her husband, Aaron, her daughters were in elementary school. Today, they are 18 and 21, young adults who grew up with the bookstore as a cornerstone of their childhood.

Unfortunately, as the girls aged, the publishing industry evolved as well, transforming to the point where sustaining a brick-and-mortar bookstore simply became impossible for the Lyons.

“It became painfully obvious that it was not working,” Lyon said. “I’m afraid between the economy and Amazon, we just can’t continue.”

Beginning today (Thursday, April 16), the family-owned bookstore—one of Chico’s most beloved businesses—begins its final days of operation.

Although Lyon had hoped to sell the business and keep it afloat in Chico, there was no viable option other than to shut the doors of the downtown shop.

Last week, after 12 years in business, Lyon announced the news via Facebook, and she closed up shop to prepare for a liquidation sale. Earlier this week, the storefront’s windows at 135 Main St. were covered with brightly colored poster board, with a note signaling the bookstore’s final closure.

The store will remain open for at least a few weeks, to sell the books and merchandise that remain in stock. It will continue to honor outstanding gift certificates and credits until its official closure, which is undetermined at this point.

For Lyon, the loss of the business is akin to losing a family member. She said it is a time of grief for the family, the store’s seven employees and the community members who have been faithful customers for more than a decade.

Lyon noted that Lyon Books—first at its location near the downtown Chico Post Office and then at its current space next door to Peet’s Coffee & Tea—has been a haven for local readers and writers over the years. The store represents 386 local authors in their literary lineup and has hosted more than 400 weekly book-signings and -readings with writers since 2003.

Additionally, the Chico Authors and Publishers Society has regularly met at Lyon Books. With the bookstore’s impending departure, the meetings will be moved to the Chico branch of the Butte County Library.

Though Heather and Aaron Lyon are closing the last chapter for Lyon Books, Chico will remain their home. Aaron runs his own graphic design and multimedia business and will maintain that work, and Heather is making plans for a new career.

As the family prepares to bid a final farewell to Lyon Books, Heather said despite the heartache she feels over closing the business, she remains steadfast in her gratitude for the experience and her love of the local literary community.

“This business has been so incredibly wonderful,” she said. “The people who read books are the best people and the people who write books are even better.”

A group of state lawmakers recently announced a package of five bills to advance tobacco reform in California. Collectively, the bills seek to curb tobacco use among youth, expand access to care for low-income residents, regulate electronic cigarettes and save lives and money, according to a press release from state Sen. Richard Pan (D-Sacramento).

Pan’s SB 591 would add an additional $2 tax to packs of cigarettes; SB 151, by state Sen. Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina), would raise the minimum smoking age from 18 to 21; SB 140, by state Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), would restrict the use of e-cigs in workplaces, restaurants and other public spaces, in addition to increasing penalties for selling them to minors; AB 1396,

by Assemblyman Rob Bonta (D-Oakland), would divert tobacco tax revenues to Medi-Cal in an effort to reduce the burden on taxpayers for tobacco-related health treatments; and AB 768,

GETTING OLD COSTS A FORTUNE

The cost of long-term care for the elderly is increasing across the country, and California is no exception, a survey by Genworth Financial finds.

The survey polled about 15,000 nursing homes and assisted living facilities nationwide, concluding that the median cost of one year in a nursing home has increased by an average of 4 percent annually over the past five years, according California Healthline. The median cost is currently $91,250, compared to $87,600 just last year. (More than half of the country’s long-term care costs are covered by Medicaid.)

In California, the cost has grown by an average of 3.5 percent over the past five years to $104,025 in 2015.

CONVERSION THERAPY CALLED OUT

President Obama supports banning psychiatric treatments aimed at changing the sexual orientation or gender identity of LGBTQ youth.

The statement, made by White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett on April 8, comes in response to an online petition posted to the administration’s website following the death of 17-year-old Leelah Alcorn, a trangender girl from Ohio who committed suicide in December, according to The Associated Press. Alcorn (pictured) left behind writings of undergoing religious conversion therapy.

Obama is not specifically calling for a nationwide ban, but the statement did highlight 18 states that have introduced legislation similar to laws already in place in California, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., banning conversion therapies.

“The overwhelming scientific evidence demonstrates that conversion therapy, especially when practiced on young people, is neither medically nor ethically appropriate and can cause substantial harm,” Jarrett said.

many years, Tracy Claflin’s primary Fhike,orsocial outlet was meeting her friends to bike, swim or play soccer.

“Now, when they’re inviting people on a hike, they look at me like, ‘Well, sorry. Want to meet us afterward?’ It’s been really difficult,” Claflin said during a recent interview.

“I’m trying to find other things to do.”

In 2004, Claflin, now 57, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an incurable auto-immune disease. But she considered herself lucky—until recently, her symptoms were few and far between, allowing her to maintain her active lifestyle and continue running the Montessori Elementary School on The Esplanade with her husband, Jim. But a few years ago, the heavy fatigue often associated with MS—symptoms vary widely from one patient to the next—became too pervasive for Claflin to work full time, and the couple sold the school.

Last year, her disease reached a new level of severity and she was hospitalized four times.

“It really messed up my whole body,” she said. “Now I have some balance issues.

I’m walking now, but I’m not walking far, and tend to drift to the right. I might be in a wheelchair at some point—who knows?

It’s day-to-day and becoming that way more and more.”

Claflin’s life has become limited in many respects. She still teaches at Sherwood Montessori, but only for three or four

hours a day. She’s forced to stay inside during the day to escape the heat, which exacerbates her symptoms. She can’t commit to travel plans with friends and family.

But she strives to remain an active member of the community. In recent months, Claflin has helped organize the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s (NMSS) upcoming fundraising walk in Chico, set for next Sunday (April 26).

It’s been more than a decade since MS Walk: North State has been in Chico, said Amy Clark, regional community development manager for NMSS. For the past 13 years, it was held in Yuba City, but the lead organizer there, also an MS patient, became progressively more disabled by the disease and is no longer able to spearhead the event. So Clark, a resident of Paradise, decided to bring the walk back to Chico— specifically, Lower Bidwell Park, which she considers “a much more pleasant setting than the streets of Yuba City.”

Clark’s goal for the event, which she anticipates will attract a few hundred participants from all over the North State, is to raise $36,200. She expects the 13 such walks throughout the region will raise a total of $1.6 million. The money will go toward MS programs, services, financial aid and research.

People like Claflin are hoping for breakthrough treatments and possibly a cure. Meanwhile, she’ll take each day as it comes, though she admits that’s a scary prospect.

“You can’t do the things you used to,” she said, “so it’s really hard to look at your future.”

While much remains unknown about MS,

researchers have established this much: It’s an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, damaging the myelin sheath (an electrically insulating coat around the axon of

Claflin and Clark both suffer from the former variety, also known as relapsing-remitting MS. At times, their symptoms disappear entirely, but always come back— often worse than before.

Notable advancements in the field have been made in recent years, including some in our backyard. In 2013, Dr. Jonah Chan, a neuroscientist with UC San Francisco, won a prize for innovation in MS research for his work in repairing the brains of MS patients.

Specifically, Chan invented new technologies to rapidly identify compounds that stimulate the regrowth of the myelin nerve casing.

And last November, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new medication for relapsing MS, called Lemtrada, which Clark calls a game-changer.

“In a way, it resets the immune system, targets the cells attacking the myelin in your nerves and basically reprograms them,” she explained. “It’s a big-gun medication.”

The FDA approved Lemtrada based on the results of two large clinical trials that “confirmed its ability to significantly reduce relapse rates over two years,” according to NMSS. “One of the

The medication comes with serious, even deadly, risks. Of the people treated with Lemtrada in those clinical studies, 34 percent developed autoimmune thyroid disorders, while prescribing information for Lemtrada includes a warning about the “potential for serious, sometimes fatal, autoimmune conditions.”

There’s much still to be done, especially for patients with progressive MS—a form that continually worsens with no remission periods—which affects more than 1 million people worldwide. Since progressive MS lacks an identifiable disease pattern, researchers remain baffled about how and why MS progresses. To date, no treatments for progressive MS have been approved by the FDA. Both Clark and Claflin emphasized that MS Walk: North State is open to the general public and encouraged the broader community to participate.

“Look at polio and all the other diseases we’ve figured out,” Claflin said. “I hope, in my lifetime, they find a cure for this.” Ω

While their environmental disciplines vary—from birds and watersheds, to food and activism—the four people profiled in these pages share a passion for the natural environment and conservation. And that’s something to be celebrated and emulated in our fast-paced, consumption-driven world.

Seeds of love Laurie Niles Growing food is in Laurie Niles’ blood. Her father grew up on a small family farm, which is where she got her first taste of home-grown fruits and veggies. But it wasn’t until later in life, while working at Planned Parenthood in Chico, that she decided to make it her focus.

“I would watch what young people came in with for lunch—it was called a Slurpee—and I wondered, ‘How is this happening? How do you consider this lunch?’”

Further investigation, particularly at local schools, revealed that there was much to be done

to increase awareness of good, wholesome foods as well as to introduce people to the idea of gardening.

“The interest is finally catching on,” she said during a recent interview at the Jesus Center Farm, one of almost a dozen she helps manage in Butte County. Niles is employed by the GRUB Education Program, which she’ll be co-directing starting next month, when current director Stephanie Elliott moves out of town. The community gardens are part of a program run by Cultivating Community North Valley, in partnership with GRUB, and block grants pay for things like tools and equipment as well as help with organization and workshops.

Workshops help people with skills such as canning, drying and composting to avoid food

faces waste. They also teach how to use tools, irrigation techniques, which crops to choose and even how to cook them. “We made sauerkraut out of just-harvested cabbage,” she said of a recent gathering.

“The workshops have really helped increase interest [in gardening],” Niles said, explaining that many people are at first intimidated by the fact that they’ve never done it before. “People assume that they can’t grow food because they don’t know how, but I don’t think gardening is a skill we’re born with—it’s something you have to learn.”

Niles not only works at community gardens—everywhere from the Jesus Center Farm to the Jarvis Senior Gardens on Notre Dame Boulevard to African American Family & Cultural Center garden in Oroville—she also helps organize them. The idea is that each community garden will be sustainable, and that means gathering enough support to run them using volunteers. All community members are encouraged to volunteer, she said.

At the Jesus Center Farm, which is a little different from the others, Jesus Center clients are offered the chance to work as interns in exchange for pay and job experience.

“This garden really gives the Barber Neighborhood more of a sense of place,” said farm Manager Jim Mathys.

Niles agreed that, mostly because of Mathys, the Jesus Center Farm has worked more on community-building than some of the other gardens. That’s part of the beauty of having many hands and skillsets involved, she said, because volunteers can learn from Mathys’ and others’ experiences.

Starting this year, thanks to a renewed block grant through CCNV, Niles also is working with local schools in Chico and Paradise, bringing her full-circle to where her inspiration first sprouted. And she’s not showing signs of slowing down anytime soon—she’s also working on starting a Chico chapter of Slow Food USA. Like father, like son Lucas RossMerz Lucas RossMerz has a passion for the outdoors, and, more specifically, the river that runs right through this region. And he wants to share it with residents of the North State.

“Once you get people to touch it—even if they just go and stand on the shore of the river—they’ll understand that it’s a special place. They’ll see an osprey; they’ll see a

blue heron; they’ll see a river otter. It’s not just some pretty thing we need to protect.

It’s actually a functioning ecosystem that provides us benefits that we can’t even calculate.”

RossMerz is the executive director of the Sacramento River Preservation Trust, having taken over the position from his father, John Merz, at the beginning of last year. The elder Merz, a longtime local environmentalist, helped establish the trust in 1984, three years before his son was born.

The trust’s mission, according to its website, “is to protect, preserve,

and enhance the natural values of the Sacramento River” between Chico and Red Bluff. Those values include recreational offerings, commercial fishing, agriculture and overall beauty. While it relies mostly on dues-paying members for its financial support, the trust also receives some grant money as well as assistance from local businesses.

RossMerz, whose last name includes that of his mother, John’s wife, Carole Ross, was born and raised in Chico and has a bachelor’s degree in environmental management and protection from California GREEN continued on page 20 April 16, 2015

He said what he’s emphasized and brought to the forefront since taking over the trust is the promotion of eco-tourism.

“The missing piece when I came on was the selling of experiential expression and passion,” he said during a recent interview in the trust’s Flume Street office.

A sturdy, confident fellow who’s seldom at a loss for words, RossMerz said he also has brought a sense of organization to the trust via modern-day technology.

“My dad didn’t have a cellphone,” he said. “I have a smartphone, so I get emails directly into my pocket—all day, every day. Organizing the information and data in the office allows for me to get hit by a bus tomorrow and then someone else can come in here and figure everything out.”

RossMerz has ambitious plans for the organization. He’s set a goal to raise at least $80,000 over the next year so the trust can hire a program manager and a fulltime office manager.

micromanage,” he said. “The organization is all about trust.

People trust us to give a voice to the Sacramento River and we have to trust that in the end every dollar we spend is going toward our mission.”

RossMerz said he is grateful for his father and to have grown up in a community like Chico, where the father and son spent “fun evenings together at City Council and irrigation district meetings.”

“I was raised by someone who knows the political environment very well,” he said. “And I feel like I’m super blessed to be part of the Chico village. I appreciate

all the people who have pulled me aside to talk about issues and filled me in on different strategies and approaches.”

Despite the fact that the river and its inhabitants, including the salmon, face ongoing struggles, RossMerz remains hopeful and committed to helping the watershed through his work.

“In the time I’m here, I’d like to see the trust grow into a well-oiled, functioning nonprofit machine that gives the Sacramento River the voice it deserves.”

Brice said the grebes at the Themalito Afterbay are fortunate because water levels are kept consistent there, but drought and other water issues have directly affected other grebe destinations, such as Clear Lake and Eagle Lake, where diminished food supplies of small fish and decreasing shoreline space threaten their ability to raise chicks. Drought also may affect them in other ways.

“The grebes had a very good year last year, but we had an eruption of white-faced ibis there, which was surprising because there are no records of it happening before,” Brice said. “All of a sudden there were several thousand of them one day. We were afraid they would compete with the grebes, but it all worked out all right.”

She said the Grebe Project has always relied on volunteers, and she is working on shifting the program to be even more of “a citizen science project.” To that end, she’s been recruiting more volunteers at Butte College, where she is currently studying biology and natural resources, and through outreach at public events. She also is holding training sessions at Altacal’s Chico office, the next of which is scheduled for Saturday (April 18) at 11 a.m.

Altacal’s other conservation projects include efforts to help bank swallows, whose nesting grounds along Northern California’s waterways are threatened by artificial hardening of river banks and other development, and the monitoring of Northern saw-whet owls at Chico State’s Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve and Butte Creek Ecological Preserve.

The group also recently launched a Neighborhood Habitat Certification program to encourage local residents to plant drought-resistant, bird-friendly gardens.

They say you always remember your first love.

This is true for Kate Brice, who instantly recalls a chance encounter six years ago that changed her life forever. The object of her immediate, and lasting, affection was a rosebreasted grosbeak.

“I was living in Milwaukee and going to school there,” recalled Brice, who grew up on Chicago’s South Side and now lives in Magalia. “We lived near the river and put up a bird feeder, and that’s when I started noticing birds. [The grosbeak] is a migratory bird, and I’d never seen anything like it. It’s red and white and black and absolutely gorgeous.

“Being a city kid, sometimes you don’t realize just how beautiful nature is.”

From that moment on, Brice fell further and further into the world of birding. When she and her partner, Derek Dunn, moved to Butte County a year and a half ago, one of their first objectives was to join Altacal Audubon Society, the local chapter of the international organization of bird advocates. Last summer, Brice volunteered to be part of the Grebe Project, a study that Altacal has conducted in cooperation with the California departments of Water and Fish and Wildlife since 2004 that monitors a migratory breeding colony of Western and Clark’s grebes (pronounced with a long “e” as in “greens”) at Thermalito Afterbay.

She now serves as that project’s coordinator.

Brice explained that grebes are a species of waterbird that winters along the Pacific Coast and flies inland to breed during the winter months. The birds are known for their floating nests and elaborate courtship dances, which include rubbing necks, synchronized head-bobbing and dashing across the top of the water—a talent Brice noted the grebes share with very few other animals, most notably the basilisk, or Jesus lizard.

“Grebes are very tied to water, and that makes them vulnerable for a number of reasons,” Brice said. “They can’t walk on land well, and they’re not even very strong flyers, so they aren’t good

“Sometimes, I’ll sit by the trash cans outside the dining area and I’ll watch people. There’s compost, recycling and landfill. It’s a game I play— tally whether they do it right, because there’s a sign and it’s so blatant,” she said, exasperated. “There’s no ambiguity in the sign!”

As Haley’s academic career at Chico State winds down—she’ll graduate this spring with a degree in cultural anthropology and a double minor in managing for sustainability and environmental studies—the 26-year-old is increasingly frustrated with the apathetic attitudes most of her 16,000-or-so peers display toward the environment. Especially since, over the past three years, Haley has been hyper-involved on campus and in the community, serving as the Associated Students’ zero-waste coordinator, sitting on multiple committees, working as garden coordinator for Butte Environmental Council and playing a key role in Chico State’s commitment to divest from fossil fuels.

Originally from San Diego, Haley initially gravitated to animal rights issues, familiarizing herself with the horrors of factory farming by reading books on the subject, including Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, which opened her eyes to the “environmental destruction that comes from Big Ag.” Her interest in broader environmental issues catalyzed from

there, and she sold her car to become a full-time bike commuter.

Haley transferred to Chico State from Mira Costa College after visiting a friend in Chico and going to the Saturday morning farmers’ market.

“The sense of community here I knew was important,” she said. “In San Diego—the community there, well, there’s no such thing. That’s why I chose to go to school here.”

After making the move, Haley was hired as BEC’s garden coordinator and subsequently immersed herself in the local food movement and campus government, including running the A.S. Environmental Affairs Council. She believes her greatest accomplishment to date is helping bring a ballot measure to students during last year’s A.S. elections asking whether the university should divest from fossil fuels.

“For a school so rooted in sustainability that prides itself for being a sustainable campus, it seemed a little backward that it was profiting from the wreckage of the planet,” she said.

The measure passed with 80 percent of the vote last April, and in December the University Foundation board of governors voted to cease all new investments in oil and coal companies. The board also voted to liquidate the school’s holdings in mutual funds whose investments support such companies.

As for her career after graduation, Haley wants to help change how society handles its waste, likely from within the trash industry. Specifically, she’d like to work for a waste-hauling company with a zero-waste goal.

“Trash seems like a neutral way to go,” she explained. “When you talk about climate change, there are people who still don’t believe in it and will shut off if you got on a rant. Trash is something everyone, at least in my mind, should be able to relate to. …

Nobody likes walking through town or campus and seeing trash in the creek.”

Comedy events seem to be on the rise locally—what to you think is driving this trend?

The comedy scene is a refuge for misfits and malcontents. The surge of comedy scenes in small towns is reminiscent of the DIY hardcore scene where low-budget shows sprung up like wild mushrooms in every living room and back bar without any thought to profit.

People crave laughter in their lives. Could it be with the environment collapsing, political salvation in shreds, and every major institution a parody of itself, people just need a break? Maybe.

Tell me a bit about the Blue Lagoon comedy showcases you started doing in Santa Cruz in 2008.

I took over the Blue Lagoon from a woman who wore a python around her neck and would have 26

grand mal seizures in the middle of a joke. We’d carry her offstage and then bring her back on to deliver her punch line. The Blue Lagoon was/is a notorious gay bar and Hells Angels hangout—so it appeals to a certain kind of deviant. I book up to 100 comics a month, and I’ve never had trouble finding comedians. I’ve had comics drive up from L.A. to do five minutes in my room, because I’ve trained my crowd not to be assholes.

I notice that there are few women comedians in the lineup at the Chico festival—is comedy a tough market for a woman to break into?

Funny is funny; it doesn’t matter if you have 10 dicks, four breasts and skin like a serpent. Standup is not elitist; it’s one human being, a microphone and an audience of at least one other person. I get just as pumped when anyone funny—male or female—is on my stage. But, I do keep an eye out for female comics. Because as a promoter, if I book 15 dude comics every week, the female audience members in Santa Cruz chase me to my car and accuse me of having a sausage factory—true story.

Chico’s Becky Lynn is performing at the Chico Comedy Festival, so that makes two.

How are the Chico showcases organized?

Each venue in Chico has a headliner who I thought would excel in that environment. Brendan Lynch does notorious crowd work. So I put him in Duffy’s. It will be like the killing fields in Cambodia. But I know they can handle it. Conor Kellicutt is headlining The Bear, aka ground zero for college kids. Conor is super affable and I wouldn’t be surprised if several frats want to pledge him that night.

Lydia Popovich is a Chico State graduate and one of the top female comics in SF, soon to leave for L.A. I thought the hip, smart atmosphere at La Rocca Tasting Room was a nice choice for her. And so on, and of course Drennon Davis and DJ Real is the hot ticket at the El Rey, a musical duo whose shenanigans might garner them their own show on Comedy Central later this year. Ω

Pacino’s raunchy swagger provides adequate entertainment throughout, and he’s at least partly credible as the kind of Jersey Boy who maybe got too big for doo-wop groups and went solo. But Fogelman has written the character as someone who might have been another Bob Dylan (the sort of pop music fledgling who might have gotten supportive attention from Lennon), and it’s hard to see any of that in Pacino’s Danny.

In any event, this film’s wisp of satire— aging rocker performing his greatest hits for crowds of middle-aged women—seems petty and mean-spirited in every respect.

Worse yet, the picture’s putative “inside view” of Danny’s life and career has very little in it that resembles first-hand experience, let alone genuine insight.

Nevertheless, the film’s assorted subplots provide a diverting set of sideshows that keep the proceedings afloat, more often than not. Screwball comedy-style repartee gives temporary piquancy to Danny’s flirtation with a seemingly staid hotel manager (Bening). Plummer quite naturally brings gravity and wry humor to the role of Danny’s longtime manager, and that has the perhaps unfortunate effect of diminishing the character’s own streak of desperation.

The biggest of the plot twists is the most central and, ultimately, the most problematical. With the Lennon letter as partial motivation, Danny sets out to make amends with the adult son Tom (Bobby Cannavale) he has never really acknowledged or met.

Tom and his wife, Samantha (Jennifer Garner), have a young daughter named Hope (a very energetic Giselle Eisenberg), and Danny’s newfound status as doting grandfather awakens family feelings in him, at a time when Hope’s parents would prefer not to have anything to do with him.

Later on, Fogelman adds a couple of medical sub-plots to the family-drama mix, and by that point, the soap opera elements of Danny Collins are beginning to strangle on their own formulaic extravagance. That’s not enough to kill the entire enterprise, but I can’t help wishing Fogelman’s movie didn’t seem so eager to please, and so shameless in its indulgence of bittersweet sentiments. Ω

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Kingsman is a comical action film, with secret agents, high-tech weaponry, and international espionage, as well as intermittent jolts of crazed satire and broad spoofs of several sorts. It’s a mostly entertaining stew of movie ingredients, but erratic in ways that dilute and dull down the whole enterprise.

While the spoofing of James Bond films is mostly affectionate and inconsequential, the parts of the story involving spy agencies, Internet moguls, global conspiracies, and semi-futuristic technology are a rather unstable mix of sci-fi extravagance, furious satire and fanboy jokiness. Colin Firth, who plays a foppish variation on the Bond-type super spy, acquits himself nicely in the dialog scenes but is pretty clearly out of his element in the movie’s blindingly soupedup fight scenes. Samuel L. Jackson is sharp and stingingly funny as the wide-eyed, lisping Internet mogul with sinister plans. Taron Egerton is mostly likable as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, the fledgling secret agent whom the veteran Harry Hart (Firth) hopes to bring to the special “Kingsman” branch of the British secret services. The latest film adaptation of a best-selling Nicholas Sparks novel tells the story of a couple of starcrossed lovers—the bull-riding champ (played by Scott Eastwood, son of Clint) and the promising young college grad heading to NYC (Britt Robertson).

sound mind and spirit, thanks largely to late-night viewings of Easter Parade and by Yentl and to the shipment of SaintHenri Bourride Émilion that arrived from Bordeaux h enri @ in February—and to three Costco new srev i ew. c o m bottles of Grey Goose vodka.

In fact, for the first time in years, Henri actually has a case of printemps fever, brought on in no small part by the vibrant dogwood blossoms and the lush and nascent greenery of Bidwell Park—and, I must confess, by the fervidly spare attire of some of its young visitors.

But spring means something else, too—especially to the cook and the gourmand. It means lamb.

Traditionally, lamb is served this time of year for two reasons: 1) Before improved animal husbandry and imports from other parts of the world (particularly New Zealand, whose spring is our fall), lamb was available only in spring; 2) to Jewish and Christian faiths alike, lamb is an important part of the season’s principal religious holiday meal. At Passover, it symbolizes the lamb, as described in Exodus, that was slain for each household in order that the “Angel of Death” would pass over and not kill that family’s first-born son. Christians serve lamb at Easter as, according to Corinthians, it symbolizes Christ himself, the “sacrificial lamb”—whose Lord’s Supper, or Last Supper, was, according to many religious scholars, very likely itself a Passover meal.

Lamb is enjoyed and celebrated throughout the world. In North Africa, it’s often sweetened with fruit or honey or cooked in stews with garbanzos, onions, olives, nuts, dates and mint. Greeks serve it with a cucumber-and-yogurt sauce, and in many Middle Eastern countries (Muslims can eat beef and lamb, but not pork), it’s curried or served on skewers as kabobs. American favorites include leg

of lamb, rack of lamb and lamb chops.

Henri recently had the privilege of overhearing local chef extraordinaire and bon vivant Deni Ladimieux holding forth on Irish lamb: “In Ireland,” he said, waving a glass of pinot noir, “the gents needed the wool to keep warm; that and whiskey of course, so they ate the pigs. But in the spring, with the sun at their back and faced with a twinning, they took a chance and killed the wee one, because lamb blood was rare, sweet, fresh and safer than pig’s, and the meat smelled good with wild rosemary, leeks and onions—the lamb small enough to roast over the open fire, the fat married to the peat and sweet marjoram. Their children literally honed their teeth on lamb chops and the skinned leg bones, and it became a formidable genetic force in the trenches of gastronomy.” Monsieur Ladimieux then looked across the room at Henri—what all did he know?—and continued.

“And for the wine? A nebbiolo, either Barolo or Barbaresco, with tight berry tannin, leather, honed to a point to cut right through the succulent fat on the tongue.”

Henri would have spilled his Tanqueray and tonic right then and there had there been any left. He took a breath to regain his composure, set his glass down on a table, and hastened an exit. On the way home, I stopped for a bottle of Barolo, and drank most of it while grilling the lamb that I had, coincidentally, been marinating.

Henri’s grilled spring lamb Trim excess fat from one butterflied leg of lamb and place lamb in large, sealable plastic bag. In a large bowl, mix four cloves minced garlic, 1/2 cup dried rosemary, 1/2 cup lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt, 1/2 teaspoon ground anise, and one cup plain yogurt, and pour into bag with the lamb. Set in large pan and refrigerate overnight.

Drain lamb, saving marinade, and place on grill over rosemary sprigs. Cook for about 50 minutes, or to 140 degrees, marinating every 10 minutes or so.

Serve with rosemary-and-butter sautéed new potatoes, green beans or asparagus, a crisp green salad and warm French bread. □

Suddenly, the buzz among my friends and musical colleagues increased, and one of my own bandmates, Jeffy Bee, frontman of Biggs Roller (for which I play drums), began signing up for time slots, for both himself and his bands, and I thought, “Maybe they’ll actually keep it going for a couple days.”

weeks into the effort and close to the 15 days 12 hours mark of the old record. There seems to be no sign of wavering enthusiasm from either musicians or audience members, though maintaining the required 10 “warm bodies” between 2 and 7 a.m. continues to be one of the biggest challenges, and the core group of official volunteers is pretty gassed and in need of fresh bodies to make it to the end of the month without dropping.

Due to obligations out of town, I missed the first few days of the concert. Then, on the morning I got back to Chico, the power went out all over Butte

County and it occurred to me that, “Holy crap, this could blow the whole Guinness record thing out of the water!” So I made my way down to the Tackle Box at about 11 a.m. to find the place packed with musicians and music lovers—on a Monday morning!

It was a heartening sight. (Note: Even though bands kept playing through the outage, and bystanders used their phones to continue the required videodocumenting when the backup generators failed, the organizers officially restarted the clock on April 6 to preserve transparency. They will submit all materials and testimony to Guinness and wait to see if those first four-plus days will be counted.)

I’ve since spent many hours at the Tackle Box and have thoroughly enjoyed the wild and varied blend of styles (of people and music)—from hardcore punks with anarchy-symbol neck tattoos conversing amiably with mustachioed cowboys over a bucket of peanuts to gingham-frocked grandmothers and dreadlocked toddlers dancing jubilantly in front of a blues band—that have converged at this come-one-come-all event.

I played my first set for the record on April 6— the Monday night of the power outage—with Biggs Roller. Two hours of our blend of raucous country and molten rawk (a self-created genre I call barnyard metal) to a crowd that included line-dancers, headbangers and dirt-twirlers. The sight from the stage could not have been more fun and was an inspiring example of a diverse community uniting harmoniously and joyfully. Biggs Roller hit the stage again a couple days later as Jeffy Bee rousted the troops from bed for a hastily summoned 3-4 a.m. set.

This past Sunday evening I was on stage again, drumming for a “Star 69”-themed set by the Living Karaoke Band, playing hits selected from the Top 100 of 1969. We’ll never be accused of being perfectionists, but judging by the enthusiastic dancers and singers-along, a bit of musical nostalgia delivered with a wink and a grin was able to adequately liven up the place.

Chico Breaks the Record has provided an example and a setting for proving that we really can “all get along,” and have a great time doing it. I recommend checking it out before the month rolls by. □

Misty Copeland Touchstone If there are happy stories in the world of ballet, most of them are about white dancers from wealthy backgrounds, and it’s in that context especially that the amazing story of Misty Copeland—now a principal dancer for American Ballet Theatre—is an inspiration. In her memoir, Life in Motion, Copeland tells how she didn’t discover her knack for classical ballet until the age of 13 (most professional ballerinas begin taking dance classes as toddlers). When she did commit to dancing, she struggled to keep up with the demands of studying ballet amid an unstable home life, and later during a custody battle between her mother and the family that hosted her during her training. In addition to the socioeconomic stresses, Copeland also faced difficulties in overcoming racial preconceptions as a black woman in an art that is still very white. Ultimately though, Life in Motion is the story of Copeland overcoming the boundaries she set for herself, through shyness and self-doubt. Her final victory, then, is not becoming a world-class dancer, but learning to believe in herself. Life in Motion is a stirring reminder of the human spirit and the rewards of not giving up.

Tough Love Tinsley Ellis Heartf ixer Music Atlanta bluesman Tinsley Ellis has been hard at work since forming his first edition of the Heartfixers some 34 years ago. Now 57, he shows no signs of letting up, either, which is a good thing for the guitarist’s world-wide legion of fans. On Tough Love, the third album on his own Heartfixer Music label (he’s got 15 others out on a variety of labels, including a batch on Alligator), he blends his blues with a lot of pop and soul sensibilities. While that might cause the 12-bar blues police to react in horror, the songs—all of them his—are infused with tremendous amounts of feeling and share the themes of lost love/losing love that are also the basis for dozens of blues standards. A good example is “Leave Me”: “It was over a long time ago but I just can’t tell you to go, now leave me, if that’s what your heart wants to do.” Also living up to the CD’s title is “Should I Have Lied,” a solemn ode to a dissolving relationship in which he asks his crying partner “what’s the use of pretending; we had a love and now it’s ending. You asked me if I was yours, should I have lied?” Great songs, great playing, great singing. Tough love indeed!

California Gold Rush hit its peak between 1849 and 1855. Three-hundred-thousand adventurers flocked to America’s West Coast in search of gold. In the early days, gold nuggets were lying around on the ground in plain sight, or were relatively easy to find in gravel beds at the bottom of streams. But later prospectors had to work harder, developing methods to extract the gold from rocks that contained it. One way to detect the presence of the precious metal was through the use of nitric acid, which corroded any substance that wasn’t gold. The term “acid test” refers to that process. LOVE’S REAL ESTATE Confused Dear Real Estate, What’s going on in the real estate market these days? We’re confused by the reports we get. The information seems conflicting.

Confused Dear Confused, Your confusion is understandable. Conflicting real estate headlines are marching across websites, blogospheres, newspapers, magazines and everywhere else headlines congregate.

For example, witness these contradictory headlines, which appeared within days of each other: “Home Sales Slow Down“ as opposed to “Home Sales 19% Higher.” And “Sales Prices Inching Up” as opposed to “Prices in Sharp Decline.” And “Buyers in Short Supply” as opposed to “Buyers Abound at Record Levels.” Anyone not confused by these must be confused.

Granted, markets are hard to read. Not to be forgotten however, is the lesson learned from my chalk-covered, eraser-clutching professor of economics. “All markets are local!” he would bellow. Bony finger in the air, one eyebrow raised, he stared us down, bits of foam at the corners of his mouth. “All markets are local!” he repeated. “Forget the national headlines!”

We the student body responded to his maniacal enthusiasm in appropriate fashion: slack-jawed and dim-lidded. The good professor held the sides of his head, shuddering at the futility of instilling this critical concept in such a thickskulled body of students.

The professor’s efforts were not squandered, however. His lesson is forever embedded in at least one thick skull, burned into bony matter as if with a branding iron: All markets are local!

With that concept in mind, Confused, we sought the answer to your question by jumping in the trenches and interviewing real-life practitioners of local real estate: Q.: What’s going on in the local market these days?

Local Realtor: Much busier than six months ago.

More calls from sellers now. We’re list-pricing aggressively and selling successfully. Plenty of buyers, too, with multiple offers in many situations.

Q.: Is it easy?

Realtor: Very funny. No. Escrows take as long as they ever did, and are at least as complicated.

Buyers have a hard time qualifying for loans.

Houses too; the banks demand repairs even if buyers don’t. Appraisals come in low. Short sales still take forever. I’m working harder than ever.

Q.: What’s the good news?

Realtor: We realtors are working well together.

Teamwork is getting the job done.

Q. When will the market change?

Realtor: Can’t say. Working hard feels good right now.
