beautiful university and a renowned brewery, both of which bring in thousands of visitors from across the country every year. Another magnet for tourism is the arts and culture scene, the merits of which are clearer than ever thanks to the Chico Arts Commission’s wise decision a few years ago to conduct a survey measuring its worth.

It’s well-known, of course, that the arts enrich our lives by making our communities and neighborhoods more vibrant places to live and work.

Here in Chico, the thriving arts scene has established the city’s identity as an arts-rich region. But what’s also important to acknowledge—especially these days, when some see support for the arts as wasteful—is that they are an economic driver.

That’s right. The arts not only result in cultural and social benefits, but also in tangible financial ones.

According to that study, which was unveiled Monday by a representative of advocacy group Americans for the Arts (see “Unsung industry,” Newslines, page 9), a conservative estimate of the economic impact of Chico’s arts industry is $17.7 million. It’s a conservative figure, because it’s based on the responses of just over half of the city’s nearly 100 nonprofit arts organizations. In other words, the economic benefits likely are much greater than was reported.

Other impressive findings: that money supports more than 450 full-time jobs, and buoys local government coffers by at least $500,000. Half-a-million bucks isn’t chump change. Moreover, creative communities attract creative people, a valuable commodity for businesses looking to plant roots.

Now that our city leaders know what sort of economic driver the arts are, an important question is at hand: What will they do about it?

Over the past few years, as the city’s faced declining revenue amid rising employee costs, officials have pulled away from the longtime efforts to support local artistic endeavors, by both reducing city resources needed to operate a viable Arts Commission and the funding for local arts organizations to carry out the work.

In short, investment in the arts is a direct investment in the community.

The council should recognize this and act accordingly. Ω

Athletes deserve pay Let’s give it up for HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the smartest

and most hilarious 30 minutes of news on TV these days.

Consider a recent Sunday episode that zeroed in on March Madness. A lot of you know all about the Madness because you ditched work recently to watch your alma mater play in the annual NCAA basketball tournament.

You might have noticed the endless corporate sponsorships during the games on TV. As Oliver’s show pointed out, corporate support and TV deals are making the universities involved in the tourney, and the NCAA itself, pretty damn wealthy. Everyone’s getting paid—more than ever.

Except the athletes.

This is because, for decades, the NCAA has considered athletes in college sports amateurs. The organization says students are compensated with a college education.

But, as Oliver pointed out, many student athletes don’t have meaningful time to study during their college experience. Or they take easy degree-track courses that won’t necessarily help them after graduation. Some get injured and lose their scholarships (and incur expensive medical bills because, hey, no workers’ comp). And hardly any of the student athletes become professionals and rake in big paydays. Fewer than 2 percent, actually.

Meanwhile, universities are building new field houses, stadiums and arenas. Deans and coaches rake in seven-figure salaries. And the financial stakes keep rising.

Let’s throw student athletes some of this revenue. They may be amateurs, but they’re part of a professional money-making sports racket, and should get a paycheck to match. Ω

Giving up, screwing up I have the distinction of being the only journalist who’s had a full-time gig at every legitimate Chico paper. I’ve been saying that for years, explaining how I started at Chico State’s student paper, The Orion, before moving on to the Chico Enterprise-Record, and eventually to the CN&R. “What about the Chico Examiner or the Chico Beat?” someone once asked me. “Oh, well, every legitimate newspaper that still prints,” I said, amending my assertion to exclude those two defunct papers.

Nobody ever asked me about the Synthesis, another local publication that no longer exists. For the uninitiated, the Synthesis was a weekly tabloid that focused on Chico’s entertainment scene. It folded this week, after a couple of decades in business.

I first encountered the tab when I came here for college in the late ’90s, moving up specifically to enroll in Chico State’s journalism program. The publication was about 4 years old then, and had a few sharp-witted columnists. I don’t remember much else about its early incarnation. Some of my journalism buddies ended up writing for it as freelance contributors. But they didn’t last long because they couldn’t pay rent with the Bear Bucks and Duffy’s Bucks that were given to them in lieu of real money.

I never went out of my way to read the Synthesis over the years, like I did with the CN&R before working here.

Then again, my interest was always in news, and I never considered the Synthesis to be a newspaper. Wisely, neither did most of its editors, the ones who knew the publication’s niche.

Interestingly, one person who didn’t see it that way is Synthesis founder Bill Fishkin, who evidently believes that weekly was competition for this one. It wasn’t. For obvious reasons. But I’m not writing here to point them out.

What I want to note is that none of the CN&R’s staff members are tapdancing on the grave of the local tab, as that aforementioned founder relayed to readers in his publication’s penultimate issue. That’s because any loss in the local media landscape means there are fewer voices sharing ideas, and that’s never a good thing.

Fishkin made a big pronouncement about print media being dead, and he took a swipe at CN&R, predicting this paper’s demise. He also went on and on about how his main business these days is his .net digital marketing firm. (I found his company listed on the third page of a Google search for “Syn Media,” before figuring out it’s one of those one-word monikers.)

Thing is, print—especially community journalism— remains vital. In fact, it’s more important than ever.

Fishkin just doesn’t get that.

The CN&R isn’t perfect, of course. But we are a dedicated and hardworking lot, and our readership is growing by the thousands.

Speaking of screw-ups, last week I made a huge deal about citizens attending the next City Council meeting, when the Chico police union’s contract would be under review. Well, I jumped the gun. That meeting is a week later than I reported, on April 7. Mea culpa.

Not the public’s burden Re “Clean, safe and costly” (Newslines, by Ken Smith, March 26): Ken Smith’s report expressed the desire of the Downtown Chico Business Association to have the community come up with $130,000 to pay for what the business owners do not want to pay for. DCBA Executive Director Melanie Bassett said the money would go to pay for private armed security guards, the Downtown Ambassadors group and advertising.

The Ambassadors are an unofficial arm of the Chamber of Commerce—they greet tourists and travelers and hand out brochures and advice regarding services offered in Chico. Expenses accrued by the Ambassadors should be paid by the Chamber, not you and me.

If proprietors wish to hire guards to protect their properties, they should pay them as part of their business expenses. This is also true of the advertising campaign the DCBA is asking the general public to fund.

The protection of the downtown area is a matter for the police department, which just hired three new officers with more to come. It is inappropriate for the DCBA to take over the City Plaza each week to aggressively panhandle for money when it is a criminal offense for individuals to do the same.

Re “Unlocking the park” (Newslines, by Howard Hardee, March 26): I think it would be more logical to let Upper Park Road revert back to wilderness. This would save the city money on studies and road/design/ drainage work, etc. Make the gate at the diversion dam permanently closed. It is only a short distance to the end of the park road. Just have a good trail/rugged fire access road up from there.

If you want to go up farther, hike or bike. Spend all that time and money on something the city really needs.

In an early interview, First Lady Michelle Obama repeated an observation made by a few of her predecessors: “The Presidency doesn’t change you; it reveals you.” Sadly, this presidency hasn’t changed America; it has revealed us.

I missed Mazi Noble’s guest comment until reading the letters in response. I was dismayed that the letters confirmed his point that “my lens is often scoffed at or mocked as just another black person pulling the ‘race card.’”

I recognize that being called out as “white people” was uncomfort-

able for the letter writers, but I don’t think a pinprick of discomfort merits the silencing directed at Mr. Noble by “correcting” his language or perspective. His column was not comfortable; I read pain and anger in his words. But I admire and am grateful that his commitment to community leads him to voice unpleasant truths about his experience; it takes courage to be public.

I note that the letters (mine included) focus more on being categorized as “white people” than on confronting his disturbing point that all is not well here in Chico.

That members of our community feel unsafe daily means that we have work to do. Even if it were only “five or six” experiences, that is still too many. Telling people to be quiet or change their expression fails to address the safety issues to which our neighbor has testified.

It is people like Allan Clark who continue with their exiguous mindset that racism is somehow minimal in America. He says President Obama and Eric Holder “have cried racism so much over these years.”

Oh, how I wish this was true.

Over these years, racism has shown its ugly face even more since Mr. Obama’s election. Holder and Obama are very conservative politicians, for an older activist black man as myself. Mr. Clark then goes on about young black kids getting shot down in the streets of America as if this wasn’t a problem at all. The killing of black people by the police in the U.S. is an everyday occurrence.

Mr. Clark should take off his blinders. I notice that he is from Paradise. It was the first “city” I lived in when I moved to Butte County. I had never encountered so

much racism, after my return from living in Sweden for 20 years, as I did in my nine months living there.

I had a racist neighbor who poisoned my garden, the N-word was constantly shouted by people in passing cars, and I ended up being attacked in the streets of Chico by this same neighbor. I peppersprayed him. Guess who went to jail? I did. Racism is a fact of life in America for people of color, and yes, it exists in Chico.

Responding to the takedown Re “Cock-a-doodle-doo!” (Letters,

by Rick Vagts, March 26): Rick Vagts seems to be making a statement about mortality. Quoting Shakespeare—weighty stuff, those slings and arrows. But, alas, it’s hard to tell what game Vagts seeks to bag with his own arrows.

Is my lousy writing style worthy of a hunting expedition? Or, is it substance he’s after? Some blend of the two, I suppose—allowing for a cool, koan-like, synergistic takedown.

On style, I hereby stipulate that Vagts has run me through. I lie bleeding on the field of battle.

Slashed by “quotation marks” and impaled on dashes. But, as life trickles into the rhetorical sand, I shall speak—in gasping dramatic voice—to the substance.

I’m deeply sorry that Vagts feels so fatalistically trapped between a Happy Meal and a tablecloth. I once had a similar experience: imagine an al fresco meal among the dunes—with a worn copy of The Stranger at hand. A blast of hot air, throwing a blanket around me and my companions— wrapping us mummy-like for what seemed an eternity. Upon disentanglement, golden fries and triplethick shakes in our adolescent hair.

Yes, this sort of traumatic event provides rich nourishment for meditations on mortality: to be or not, goddammit! My 12th year was no picnic.

‘Plenty of corruption’ Re “Money talks” (Second & Flume, by Melissa Daugherty, March 26): I certainly applaud the CN&R’s effort to fund investigative reporting. After all, newspapers are the conscience of a nation. But any properly educated reporter should be able to do investigative reporting as part of their normal job, so is the foundation just a protective measure for the CN&R to shield it from libel suits? And just what kind of investigative reporting is our local left-wing commie femme newspaper the ChicA News & Review going to do?

And what about protecting the offices of the newspaper—someone could crash a vehicle into the building or firebomb it. (The Sacrameto Bee has steel reinforced cement posts and other security measures, if you’ve ever visited their offices.) On the bright side, there’s plenty of corruption and

More Monca, please Having twice viewed the recent Monca pop-up exhibit at the former Tower Records spot on Main Street, I find it disappointing that this excellent show was not covered by CN&R. All the artists are local and the work includes fine digital photos by high school students. The two animated films by Josh Funk are museum-quality pieces and there are many other interesting works.

The efforts to launch Monca, an exciting addition to Chico’s status as an art-full city, are enormous, and many dedicated art-lovers have responded by volunteering time and money. There are still tens of thousands of dollars to raise before restoration of the former Veteran’s Hall can begin. Chicoans have responded more generously to this important work than their weekly newspaper. I hope there will be another pop-up exhibit in the fall and that CN&R will cover this next event.

CSU EMPLOYEES DEMAND CHANGE

On the heels of a protest on the Chico State campus in February, the California State University Employees Union recently sent a formal letter to Chico State administration outlining specific demands for change.

The union hasn’t heard from university administration since its protest on Feb. 13, despite sending President Paul Zingg a petition signed by numerous staff and faculty members decrying internal issues with bullying, transparency, retaliation and intimidation, cronyism, wages and parking.

Among other demands, the letter calls on Chico State to establish a zero-tolerance anti-bullying policy; create an executive memo declaring university policy to be transparent in all dealings with staff, faculty, students and the public; and have staff provide an annual evaluation of managers and vice presidents.

The letter requests a response from the university by Friday (April 3).

STILL ON PATROL

Former Chico City Council member and retired California Highway Patrol officer Tom Nickell helped bring a prowler into police custody on Tuesday (March 31).

He left his house on Vallombrosa Avenue shortly after 8 a.m. and saw a suspiciouslooking character slowly riding his bike down the street, stopping in yards and peering into homes. “I said, ‘Nope, this doesn’t look right,” Nickell explained. “My red flag was flying. This guy was up to no good.”

Nickell followed the man as he rode into the yard of one of his neighbors, who happened to be at home. When confronted, the man claimed to be a roofer surveying the neighborhood. “He got mad at me, asked, ‘Why are you following me?’ And then he rides off.”

Nickell called police, who arrested Jeffrey Hamill for prowling. Hamill was allegedly in possession of drug paraphernalia and burglary tools.

STUDENT’S LIFE HONORED

Chico State’s flag was lowered on Wednesday (April 1) in memory of 21-year-old student Nickolas Klein (pictured), who was fatally struck by an SUV in the south campus neighborhood on Saturday (March 28).

Klein was hit while crossing the intersection of West Seventh and Hazel streets shortly after 8 p.m., prompting multiple 911 calls, according to a Chico Police Department press release. He was later pronounced dead at Enloe Medical Center.

Klein came to Chico State from Tuolumne in 2011, and was pursuing a major in mechanical engineering, according to Chico State officials. Professor Gregory Watkins said Klein “was a quiet student who nevertheless was very engaged and excited about his work.”

An investigation by CPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team is ongoing.

Tragedy in Chico Recent killing of Cass Edison sends ripples through the community, highlights good police work story of Cass Edison is nothing short of Thadhetragic.

A suspect is in custody and, based on evidence, the case against him is strong.

In a small town like Chico, such violent crimes are enough to shake the community to its core. Edison leaves behind many friends and family members, and those who didn’t know her must wonder: Who was Cass Edison?

“She was gentle. She loved animals. She was very bright and insightful; she had a nose for news. She was exceptionally smart,” said Grant Branson, Edison’s ex-husband, during a recent interview. “She was also an accomplished artist, and she cared about other people. She really loved her kids.”

Edison was born in Montana, but moved around a lot, including to Singapore and the Philippines, with her “architect” father—she learned later he was working for the CIA. She, too, was approached by the CIA, Branson said, but she had other interests. She graduated with a journalism degree from the University of Washington and by the 1980s was working in Los Angeles. That’s where she met Branson, a coworker at a local newspaper.

“She went to work for the Downtown Gazette [in L.A.] … and she started to throw a monkey wrench in the workings of City Hall,” Branson

recalled. “She got some great stories.

She was a good writer and an insightful reporter.”

She also loved horses, especially her Arab gelding, Zaar. “We spent a lot of time riding,” Branson said, chuckling while recalling a few funny moments on horseback.

By 1992, the couple had moved to Chico, Branson’s home town, and started the North Valley Business Journal. It was successful, but shortly after Edison became pregnant with their first child, a boy, in 1997, they decided to close the business. In 2000, they gave their son a sister.

It wasn’t long after their daughter was born that the alcoholism that ran in Edison’s family really took hold, Branson said. She’d go through periods of sobriety and then start drinking again. It took a toll on their marriage, which ended in divorce, though the two kept in contact. The children, now 15 and 17, were in and out of foster care but were placed there permanently several years ago.

“She was a very caring and giving person,” said Tom Davis, Edison’s close friend. “She had a glow about her. She was very outgoing, and she was awesome with her children, very hands-on.

The loss of her children really did affect her. Her children were her life. When they were taken from her, everything started to spiral down.”

The past couple of years were tough for Edison. She was in and out of local shelters, on and off the streets, and drinking to the point of being arrested or

taken to Enloe Medical Center or Butte County Department of Behavioral Health.

“She was trying to pull herself together. That strength was still there,” Davis said, explaining that every time she found herself homeless she’d find a way to get back into stable housing.

“But she was stubborn. She wanted to battle the disease on her own.”

Branson and Davis both expressed remorse over Edison’s death.

“Nobody deserves to be killed the way she was,” Davis said. “She was a good woman. She will dearly be missed.”

At some point around the Ides of March,

Edison’s life came to an end. On the morning of March 16, a man living on the 200 block of Rose Avenue just west of Chico found her body wrapped in a blanket while preparing for work. It had been placed on a utility trailer that he planned to use that day.

He immediately called the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and what followed was some “rather extraordinary police work,” said District Attorney Mike Ramsey. The investigation led to the speedy identification—and apprehension—of a suspect.

Upon arrival at the Rose Avenue home, deputies were able to identify the body as that of Edison, Ramsey said.

From there, they went to the Chico Police Department to pull her files, which included the name of a friend, who happened to have seen Edison the day before. She had called from Enloe,

asking him to meet her there.

“He had been walking toward Enloe hospital and from a couple blocks away he saw Cass walking away from Enloe, toward his direction,” Ramsey said. “He then saw a gray primered truck stop and saw Ms. Edison talking to the driver of the truck and then get in.”

The truck drove north, the friend told deputies, who then tracked down surveillance video from a camera at Dutch Bros. depicting the vehicle. They brought that photo to the man who found the body, and he said the truck belonged to his boss, Christopher Swihart, who also owned the utility trailer on which her body was found.

“At that point, they had him,” Ramsey said. “They determined where Mr. Swihart lived … and got a search warrant for [his travel trailer]. There, they discovered evidence definitely tying him to the murder.”

One of Swihart’s neighbors reportedly said he’d recently started seeing Edison and Swihart together. The exact nature of their relationship is unknown at this time. Swihart, 49, turned himself in to authorities March 18.

“From the evidence found in his [travel] trailer, it indicated Ms. Edison was killed there and then dumped in the [utility] trailer,” Ramsey said. “We feel we have a strong case. It will be even stronger when the DNA and forensics are put together.”

Swihart is no stranger to the court sys-

tem. Three criminal convictions stand out. The first is a felony from 1991 in which Swihart was sentenced to four years in state prison for domestic violence. Details were unavailable as of press time.

The second was in 2006, when Swihart was again convicted of felony domestic violence, this time being sentenced to three years in prison. During that incident, he and his then-girlfriend, who was one month pregnant, were in his truck when they began to argue about the pregnancy. He punched her in the face and she got out and ran to a neighbor’s house. But Swihart followed and proceeded to assault her outside the house until the neighbors “rescued her,” Ramsey said.

The third felony conviction was in 2010 and resulted in a six-year sentence.

In that incident, Swihart and his thengirlfriend had an argument about sex, Ramsey said. Swihart grabbed a filet knife and threatened to kill her and then himself. When she tried to escape, he grabbed and strangled her.

Preliminary autopsy reports show the cause of Edison’s death was beating, with partial asphyxiation. Ramsey said that could have been caused by tape that had been placed around her head. Swihart is scheduled to be arraigned April 9. Ω

Unsung industry New study proves arts generate millions of dollars a year for Chico

ayor Mark Sorensen was presented with M 17.7 million reasons why artistic endeavors are good for the city of Chico on Monday (March 30). A study on the economic impact of nonprofit arts and culture organizations revealed those groups contributed at least that much in direct spending in the city last year.

The findings were delivered by Randy Cohen, vice president of research and policy for Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group Americans for the Arts, at a two-part symposium at City Council chambers. Cohen explained the results to Sorensen and the public at 4 p.m., and hosted a question-andanswer session in an adjacent conference room immediately afterward.

“We all appreciate the arts and what they do for our communities, that they can inspire us, delight us, engage us and connect us,” Cohen said near the beginning of his presentation, “but I’d like to challenge everyone to also think of the arts as an industry that supports jobs, generates revenue and is the cornerstone of tourism.”

The study determined that 54 Chico nonprofit groups spent $8.7 million producing artistic and cultural events in 2014, and audiences spent $8.9 million attending them, for a total of $17.7 million. That money supports 451 full-time jobs and generates $519,000 and $1.8 million for local and state government, respectively, according to the study.

The results were based on surveys sent to 96 nonprofit groups, of which 54 responded, and information gathered from 623 attendees to various arts and cultural events around Chico. Cohen explained that, rather than use multipliers to come up with large numbers based on small samples like some economic studies, this study used only the information collected from participants, and he empha-

sized a focus on “reliable data and conservative estimates.” He explained the numbers are evaluated using state-of-the-art “inputoutput” models customized to each community.

The study is an extension of a nationwide effort by Americans for the Arts in 2012 titled Arts and Economic Prosperity IV, which gathered similar information from 139 cities and counties representing rural and urban areas with populations ranging from 1,600 to 4 million.

Cohen made crunching the numbers more palatable by interjecting anecdotes from his personal and professional life. During the main presentation, he used an example of a recent dinner-and-theater “date night” with his wife to illustrate how attending a cultural event doesn’t just benefit the target venue, but has a wide-ranging ripple effect on everyone from local farmers to plumbers.

During the Q&A, he shared some insider information about an unlikely arts advocate.

“Most people are surprised to find out who at the national level is arguably the biggest arts education advocate, and that’s Mike Huckabee,” Cohen said. “He’s a huge arts education champion, and he really credits arts and music with helping him turn

Though Cohen’s delivery was sometimes

entertaining, the information he shared might be a game changer in a city where contributions to public arts have all but disappeared.

The results couldn’t come at a more critical time for the Chico Arts Commission.

In the past, the Arts Commission received about $70,000 annually from redevelopment funding, and as much as $140,000 from transient occupancy taxes collected from area hotels and motels. In 2013, it competed with social service organizations for a share of $25,000. That year, the commission voted to withhold part of the $5,250 it was granted to pay for the study.

Also in 2013, the City Council ordered the commission to meet six times a year, rather than monthly. In December 2014, the conservative-dominated council voted 4-3 along party lines to decrease those meetings to twice annually and develop a plan to separate from the city (see “Arts identity diminished,” Newslines, Dec. 18, 2014). Commission members are hoping city officials receive the study’s results, and Cohen’s message, loud and clear.

In addition to Sorensen, Vice Mayor Sean Morgan and council members Ann Schwab and Randall Stone were present for the first part of the presentation, but only Schwab and Stone stuck around for the Q&A part of the meeting. Morgan and Sorensen agreed to review the information and schedule a conference call with Cohen for a later date.

“Investment in the arts doesn’t come at the expense of economic development,” he said. “It’s an investment, an investment in jobs and government revenue. We’ve all got our job to do, which is to make that investment. These are organizations that live really close to the margins, and public support is important in keeping this industry viable.”

Negotiations for the 2014-15 contract hit an impasse last October and the state stepped in to mandate a fact-finding report. That report, from a three-member panel that has heard each side’s case, will be issued April 10. That will be followed by a 10-day period in which the district will make its final offer, which the union can either accept or vote on whether to strike—something that has never happened in the district’s history.

Complicating the matter is the fact that negotiations for the 2015-16 contract already have seen two sessions despite the ongoing conflict over the current year’s contract.

Tuesday’s meeting at the Masonic Lodge on East Avenue was conducted by CUTA President Kevin Moretti and Joe Asnault, CUTA vice president, as well as Michelle Bunch, a language arts support teacher, and Chris Montgomery, a Chico Junior High teacher and the union’s political adviser.

The union leaders laid out their grievances with the district, which range from relatively low pay to mandated student assessment tests to the high number of layoff notices that are sent out to teachers in the spring and then rescinded just before the fall semester begins.

The union said Chico teachers’ average wages ($38,541) rank 12th out of 14 comparable districts, including Marysville ($44,084), Oroville Elementary ($43,922) and Gridley ($42,815).

The contract negotiations are about more than money, Asnault said, and include things like the teachers’ lack of say about the district-ordered assessment tests.

“We’re not against assessment of the students,” Asnault said. “We have to do it, but the teachers have no input. We need to do some testing, but this is too much when combined with statemandated assessment tests.”

union’s objection to the assessment tests is an empty argument because it is part of the 2015-16 contract.

“The parties are talking and both are hopeful that we can find a settlement,” he said. “But the test assessment issue is not open to negotiations for the 2014-15 year.”

He said the district has offered the teachers an 8.9 percent increase in wages and benefits over two years, which to this point the union has rejected.

Asnault accused the district of orchestrating a strike by hiring a consultant, advertising for substitute teachers and allowing a waiver so that those substitutes do not have to pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). The substitutes would be paid $280 a day, well above the $78 a day they are paid under normal circumstances.

“I understand they have to plan [for a possible strike],” he said. “At the same time I would rather see them direct their energy toward a settlement.”

Feaster said in an emergency like a teacher’s strike, the state allows the district to hire those with bachelor’s degrees who have never taken the CBEST. The district employs 680 teachers, he said, and is hoping to hire at least half that many substitutes if a strike occurs.

“The district has to prepare for a strike and has been planning for three weeks,” he said. “We have to have a prudent plan in place. Hundreds of people have shown interest and we are processing 10 to 15 people a day as possible subs.”

CUSD school board member Eileen Robinson attended the meeting and was both optimistic and neutral in her assessment of the situation.

“I agree that we are down to little things and I am very hopeful that we are going to reach a settlement,” she said, adding that she sees the pros and cons of a lot of issues raised by both sides.

What’s left goes underground or into the Sacramento River.

Responsibility for managing water releases from Black Butte Lake changes seasonally, said Kevin Kibby, a hydrologic technician with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. From November to March, which is flood-control season, the lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

From April through October, or irrigation season, it’s managed by Kibby’s agency.

Due to drought conditions, water releases into Stony Creek did stop more suddenly than in years past, Kibby said. The Army Corps maintained a release rate of 30 cubic feet per second (CFS) over the winter, and Kibby was faced with a tough decision when responsibility of Black Butte Dam transferred to his agency in the

middle of March.

“We have to keep a minimum amount of water in Black Butte, or else there would be a fish die-off in the lake itself,” he said. “That has to be taken into consideration.”

While he had the option of cutting off water from the reservoir entirely, he said the lack of rainfall forced him to reduce the rate of release to 15 CFS, which “isn’t going to get very far,” he said.

(The normal rate of 30 CFS allows the creek to run well past the Hull residence before going underground.)

The resulting fish die-off in Stony Creek was “absolutely not anticipated,” Kibby said. “In normal years, the water level wouldn’t drop that fast. I didn’t expect or want this. ... There’s nothing about it I like.

“I put a lot of thought into this,” he continued. “I’ve been working at the bureau since 2002, and I grew up in Hamilton City. This is my passion. We manage [Black Butte Dam] the best we can, but not to everyone’s satisfaction, I’m sure.”

Meanwhile, the Hull family says the stench of dead fish is subsiding on their bucolic orchard property. Scavengers and the unrelenting sun have turned most of the carcasses into dry, hollow shells.

But the frustration of watching a mass die-off in their backyard is fresh, Lynette said. “It just makes you so mad.”

he stench of death has been inescapable along Stony Creek for the past couple weeks—particularly for the Hull family, whose homestead and walnut orchard outside of Hamilton City is directly adjacent to the waterway. The smell crosses their lawn and patio when the wind turns. It’s brought inside by their dogs. At night, with their windows shut tight, they’re reminded of it by the cries of feasting coyotes.

The source is thousands of rotting fish carcasses—those of salmon, perch, bass and carp— strewn along the dry creek bed for hundreds of yards and most concentrated in an indentation along the bank below the Hull residence.

That’s where many of the fish were trapped in an isolated pool when water abruptly stopped flowing about two weeks ago.

Lynette Hull and her husband, Max, along with their daughter, Kelly, have lived on Stony Creek for 14 years, and the property has been in the family much longer.

During a recent visit, Lynette recounted summer days spent wading and swimming in the creek, before California’s ongoing drought set in. From that point forward, Lynette said, water releases from Black Butte Dam have been scarce. Last year, no water flowed through Stony Creek at all.

Water was running in the creek over the last few months, but stopped flowing suddenly.

California has launched a series of TV, digital and outdoor ads decrying the health risks of e-cigarettes in a massive campaign titled “Wake Up.” The California Department of Public Health campaign comes on the heels of a CDPH advisory highlighting concerns regarding e-cigs, including the rise in their use among California’s teens and young adults, their addictive nature, and a surge in accidental poisonings of young children, according to a CDPH press release. Other specific concerns are the candy- and fruit-flavored e-cigarettes that may entice a younger generation to become addicted to nicotine and the fact that e-cigarette manufacturers aren’t required to disclose ingredients.

Dr. Karen Smith, the new director of CDPH, said California has long led the nation in tobacco prevention, but “the aggressive marketing and escalating use of e-cigarettes threatens to erode that progress.”

When life gives you Lyme

RIGHT-TO-DIE CREEPS FORWARD

California’s proposed right-to-die bill, Senate Bill 128, took a step forward on March 25 with the California Senate Health Committee’s vote of approval.

The End of Life Option Act, penned by state Sens. Lois Wolk (D-Davis) and William Monning (DCarmel), would allow doctors to prescribe lethal doses of medication to patients with terminal illnesses, according to The Sacramento Bee. The bill would require the lethal medication be selfadministered; the patient is mentally competent; two physicians confirm the prognosis that the patient has six months or less to live; and the patient’s physician discusses alternative treatment options, among other rules.

The bill drew strong opposition during the hearing on March 25. “Where assisted suicide is legal, some people’s lives will be ended without their consent through mistakes and abuse,” said Marilyn Golden, a senior policy analyst with the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund.

NEW CLINIC IN THE WORKS

Congressman Doug LaMalfa was in town on Friday (March 27) to provide a keynote address at the groundbreaking of Northern Valley Indian Health’s future clinic in south Chico.

The new clinic, expected to open for patients next fall, will complement the existing NVIH clinic on East Avenue and feature 41 medical examination rooms and 13 dental exam rooms, as well as employ up to 30 people, according to an NVIH press release. The clinic will serve an estimated 13,000 people annually and become the new home of the NVIH Children’s Health Center.

Local woman fighting disease that almost killed her story and photo by

riana Beaver almost died in the summer Bperiod of 2012. Her health had declined over a of years, and she was in so much

pain she couldn’t eat. Admitted to Stanford Hospital, staff there didn’t know what was wrong. She weighed 79 pounds.

“My mom got in contact with a chiropractic neurologist who said it was all in my brain,” Beaver said during a recent interview. “He said, ‘We’d better get to work because she has three days to live.’”

Fast forward a few years and Beaver, now 27, is still seeing the same chiropractic neurologist and making weekly trips to San Francisco for treatment. But that treatment—which has gotten her back to a healthy weight (see “Back from the brink,” July 25, 2013)—hit a plateau last fall.

That’s when her specialist recommended she get tested for Lyme disease. The results came back positive. Doctors suspect she’s had it her entire life.

“It gives the whole picture of what’s been going on my whole life, why my health has declined over time,” said Beaver, who also has cerebral palsy. “I’ve been ill since I was 9 or 10. Chronic Lyme can take time to set in and really break a person down.”

Lyme disease is unlike many diseases out there because its symptoms are varied and can mimic other health problems. It is most commonly caused by being bitten by a deer tick, but doctors believe if a woman is infected during pregnancy the disease can be passed on to her children, according to lymedisease.org, a nonprofit focusing on Lyme advocacy, education and research.

That’s what doctors believe happened in Beaver’s case, she said.

“Lyme disease is a very complex disease and it affects everyone differently,” Beaver said. “And, like me, the majority of people have no idea they have it.”

Early symptoms include a flu-like illness, a rash around the bite spot and Bell’s palsy (which causes paralysis on one side of the face). If caught early, it’s treated with antibiotics and can lead to complete recovery. Some people do experience long-

term symptoms like fatigue, and joint and muscle aches even after treatment, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a condition referred to as posttreatment Lyme disease syndrome.

However, the existence of “chronic Lyme disease,” which Beaver has been diagnosed with, is controversial.

“If Lyme disease is not diagnosed and treated early, the Lyme spirochetes [bacteria] can spread and may go into hiding in your body,” according to lymedisease.org’s characterization of chronic Lyme. “Weeks, months or even years later you may have problems with your brain and nervous system, muscles and joints, heart and circulation, digestion, reproductive system, and skin.”

“The term ‘chronic Lyme disease’ (CLD) has been used to describe people with different illnesses. While the term is sometimes used to describe illness in patients with Lyme disease, in many occasions it has been used to describe symptoms in people who have no evidence of a current or past infection …” reads the CDC website. “Because of the confusion in how the term CLD is employed, experts in this field do not support its use.”

Despite this controversy, Beaver

and her physician, a specialist in San Francisco, believe she is affected by chronic Lyme. And Beaver isn’t letting her diagnosis get her down. Quite the opposite, actually—knowing what’s been causing her health issues has been reason for a sigh of relief. That’s not to say her battle with Lyme is over—far from it.

“It’s such a relief, and great validation,” she said. “I can’t even tell you how many years I’ve wondered, ‘How did I become this person and no one knows what this chaos is inside of me?’”

The road to recovery likely will be a long one, she said, but seeing the light at the end of the tunnel helps her stay positive. She still suffers any of several dozen side

effects every day—from heart palpitations and shortness of breath to insomnia, chemical sensitivities and “brain fog.”

“Sometimes I have 80 to 90 different symptoms in one day,” she said. “It’s a rollercoaster all the time.”

One way she’s keeping busy is by starting a campaign called Take Back My Life. Her first item of business is holding a T-shirt design contest. Then she’ll sell the shirts online and, hopefully, at local stores.

“The proceeds will go to pay for my medical treatment,” Beaver explained. “But I also want to give some of the money to other Lymerelated organizations that help pay for other people’s medical treatment.”

Through it all, Beaver said she’s found strength in her community and in connecting with others who have walked in her shoes. She hopes her campaign will help educate people as well as connect other local Lyme sufferers and survivors.

“It’s a very overwhelming thing to navigate,” she said.

“There’s an unspoken camaraderie of going through warfare, fighting for your life.” Ω

Urban ecology checkup Chico State students assess the health of Chico’s creeks, trees and fish

Creek. And yet, many students and community members likely believe ecology and urbanization are unrelated subjects—that ecology is the study of what occurs only outside of city (or campus) limits.

Chico State student Lee Brisbine wants to change that. He’d like his peers to take a moment each day to appreciate the natural processes occurring all around them.

“Look down at the creek when you cross a bridge,” he suggested. “You might see a fish.”

Lee and a handful of fellow students presented on “urban ecology” during Chico State’s annual This Way to Sustainability Conference (March 26-27). The students all took Geology 506, Service Learning and Geography, taught by professor Mark Stemen.

In the class, students were tasked with assessing the health of Chico’s urban ecology, measured by the city’s creeks, trees and fish.

As it turns out, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better urban ecology classroom than Chico’s outdoor environs. Consider the urban forest made up of about 30,000 trees, roughly 200 acres of natural landscape within city limits, and multiple waterways running through urban and residential areas. That’s not to mention the natural features of Chico State’s campus, shaded

as it is by 220 species of woody plants and bisected by Big Chico Creek.

Also, there are bats—lots of bats.

Finding the colony in Butte Hall was the first project undertaken by Stemen’s class.

“When Butte Hall was constructed, it was pieced together like any building in an earthquake zone; it can’t be rigid, it has to be able to move,” Stemen said. “So, you have about an inch and a half of space between these giant slabs of concrete.

That’s where the bats are.”

Victoria Birdseye kicked off the presentation

with the students’ survey of arundo, an invasive and highly flammable plant that grows thick along Chico’s creek beds, especially Little Chico Creek, and often into homeowners’ backyards. The students mapped the creek from Pomona Avenue to Highway 99, measuring arundo by height and width as well as assessing fire danger.

Particularly alarming were fire pits near shelters that homeless people had constructed from the arundo itself, often elaborately so. (The students referred to the structures as “arundo condos.”)

“Some of the homeless camps were very impressive,” said student Tina Lando. “The arundo, they turned it into wigwams. They’d have blankets, lounge chairs, shelving units.”

The survey yielded real results. Last fall, Stemen went before the Chico City Council to testify about the fire risk posed by the arundo infestations. The council approved Butte Environmental Council to write a grant to secure funding from the state Department of Water Resources and other agencies to eradicate the arundo.

It was during that survey that the class also came upon what’s been described as a “poop pond.” That’s right—on the otherwise dry creek bed, hidden by thick vegetation and the high banks of Little Chico Creek, students found raw sewage in a volume befitting the description of a body of water.

Stemen described gingerly walking around the pooling waste as “a real-life game of hot lava” where the consequence of falling was “having the worst day ever.”

At the time, the origin of the sewage was a mystery. But after the class provided city staff with GPS coordinates of the site, the source was determined to be an illegal connection to a storm drain made by long-ago tenants of the building that’s now home to Tin Roof Bakery and Café—seven blocks away from the outlet into the creek.

The connection has since been fixed.

“It’s just so interesting that this was happening for so long,” Birdseye said, “right underneath our noses!”

To prepare for studying Chico’s urban forest,

Stemen’s class covered Edward O. Wilson’s biophilia hypothesis, first introduced in 1984. Wilson defined biophilia as “the urge to affiliate with other forms of life.”

“People have coevolved with nature and natural things,” said student Daniele Baxter.

“We have a biological need for connection with nature.”

Chicoans are lucky, then, to be connected to such a spectacular urban forest. And, as Baxter explained, the trees also sequester millions of tons of carbon emissions each year, filter storm drainage water and reduce energy usage.

In order to offset some of the highprofile tree fellings in Chico over the past few years, Stemen’s students planted native tree species in worthy areas. First, they planted valley oaks at the small park on Humboldt Road, across from a low-income housing development, and then more trees in the unkempt triangle of green space between Cypress and Pine streets near Little Chico Creek.

The class also tagged along with scientists from local environmental consulting company FISHBIO as they counted fish in Big Chico Creek. In the process, the students learned of the fragility of the salmon run that passes through Chico in search of cool waters in which to spawn.

Salmon hadn’t been officially sighted in the creek for years prior to 2014, when FISHBIO biologists discovered about a dozen spring-run chinook salmon in Salmon Hole.

But the salmon’s migratory pathway from that point was blocked by the Iron Canyon Fish Ladder, which has fallen into disrepair.

“We have a healthy, native salmon run going through our town,” Stemen marveled. “Do you know how many towns in California or on the West Coast would love to say that?”

Previous classes taught by Stemen surveyed the effects of the Saturday farmers’ market on downtown businesses and established the community garden at Oak Way Park. And stay tuned: Next year’s curriculum is “informal geography,” i.e., yard sales, food trucks and tent cities. □

Sisters unite About three years ago, Marieke Shepard (pictured at left) was working a desk job at Enloe Medical Center. It paid the bills, but she couldn’t see herself sitting all day for much longer.

She saw her sister, Roemi Wiley, a stay-at-home mom, whose busy life made running to the store to buy pet food difficult. The two decided to create a business that would combine both their passion for animals and a service they felt was missing— free pet food delivery to their customers’ homes. And so, the two sisters’ love for their furry friends inspired them to create Go Doggy Pet Store three years ago. Shepard and Wiley are passionate about providing their service to people who need it and are extremely knowledgeable about every product they sell. What inspired you to start Go Doggy Pet Store?

Shepard: I had always been a pet lover. We loved animals. About

four or five years ago I wanted to start a pet store, but there are so many and I wanted to create a business that was unique. I thought, “Wow, what if we had a store where people could order and we could do free delivery?”

What have been some of the biggest challenges starting a new business?

Shepard: Getting people to trust that we are a legitimate business.

You can have all of the ideas in the world, but learning how to operate the business is completely new.

Wiley: The challenges of overcoming your fears and what you don’t know and the decisions involved.

You have to have a passion that’s greater than your fear, to keep going forward. If we had a book that showed what the requirements are we would’ve gone, “Oh, we’re not worthy.” It was overcoming fear with more passion.

What have you learned?

Shepard: When you live in a small town like Chico, customer satisfaction is everything. We learned that we had to make sure we

were going to do what we said, be on time, be there and give them what they wanted.

Can you describe your clientele?

Wiley: Young people who are working jobs and get off after the feed store is closed. Mothers running around who are busy. For elderly people, it’s very hard to get to the store. And there are a lot of people, like students, who don’t have cars in Chico.

What kinds of products do you offer?

Shepard: In the perfect world, you want to give your pet food that is the highest quality. We have that, but we also offer food that’s much more economical but still high quality.

Wiley: We try to get them the best stuff that we can at the very lowest prices that we can.

Shepard: People’s animals are their family. We are trying to give them good food and good supplements to give them a long life and wellbeing. Pets and animals make us better human beings.

There was a string of years in my teens when I wanted to celebrate every birthday with manicotti. Sure, cake and ice cream were a given, but to me, it wasn’t truly a special occasion unless pasta was on the table.

Thankfully, with Italian roots on my mom’s side, it was a request that was easily fulfilled through an old family recipe.

With pasta central to both my celebratory and comfort cuisine, I’m looking forward to checking out a new restaurant in town, and if you’re a fellow carb lover, you’ll want to head on over, too.

Forcella, meaning “fork” in Italian, opened in February in the old Rico’s Pizza space at 1600 Mangrove Ave. It is the fourth local restaurant venture for Jon Meyer, who previously had ownership in Jedidiah’s, La Cocina Economica and Sol. Together with business partner Aaron Johnson, Meyer has embarked on a new endeavor in Italian cuisine, serving lunch and dinner.

Forcella’s menu features the traditional fare one would expect from an Italian restaurant, but with the added benefit of the pasta being made in-house. In fact, Meyer said one of the other unique aspects is a glassed-in room in the center of the dining area that allows patrons to watch the chefs making pasta from scratch, in addition to homemade mozzarella, ricotta and focaccia bread.

Even though, to me, pasta is synonymous with celebrations, Meyer said his vision is for Forcella to be a mainstay in the lineup of restaurants that one would hit up for a casual dinner on a weeknight. Meyer said there is only one item—steak—priced at over $15. The majority of the menu items range between $9 and $15.

“We want to avoid being the ‘special occasion restaurant,’” Meyer said. “I want to be the weekly restaurant. Where people say, ‘On Thursday nights, we go to Forcella.’”

There are plans to open a deli at the restaurant within a few weeks, too, Meyer said, where customers can buy Forcella’s fresh homemade pasta and sauces to bring home and make their own dishes. The deli also will feature sandwiches made on the eatery’s focaccia bread, and customers can pick up tiramisu and cannoli, all to go.

Being “culinary challenged,” as I like to say about my lack of cooking skills, I’m looking forward to stopping by the deli after a long work day and curling up on the couch in sweats with some handmade pasta. It’s sure to beat my Kraft mac ’n’ cheese ritual.

Speaking of Italian, a few weeks back, I had dinner at Panighetti’s at its new location on The Esplanade. The restaurant uprooted from its previous home farther north and expanded into the old Turandot space, which has undergone a beautiful renovation. There’s no hint of the old Chinese restaurant; a large bar against the west wall greets patrons, and there are wooden booths, a large front patio, and two separate rooms off the main dining area for private parties.

The restaurant was bustling. I personally love the proximity to Big Al’s—a prime location for a post-dinner milkshake. I’m sure the new central location will continue to be popular.

The CN&R revamped its schedule of Fiction 59 and Poetry 99 writing contests last year to shift the poetry issue to April to coincide with National Poetry Month (stay tuned for Fiction 59 in the fall). During the transition, Poetry 99 got skipped in 2014, and after a year and a half without it, we’re proud to be able to once again showcase poems from our readers in the newspaper. This year, we invited the 1078 Literary Committee to judge the hundreds of submissions we received. The five-person committee is made up of Chico State and Butte College English instructors, published writers and editors, and they bring an extensive and varied background of literary experience to the table when considering poems in the various categories: kids (fifth grade and younger), junior high school (grades 6-8), high school (grades 9-12) and, of course, the wide range of adults.

And, as if printing the winning poetry wasn’t enough, we are also inviting all the winners (and the honorable mentions) to read their poems live at the Poetry 99 reading at The Bookstore (118 Main St.), tonight, April 2, at 6:30 p.m.

Many locals will recognize second-place poet Muir Hughes as a popular local visual artist and fashion designer who helps put on avant-garde performances as part of the Chikoko collective, but she also loves working in the medium of words. “I’ve always been a writer; I just don’t necessarily promote myself as a writer,” she said. “I was writing poetry at [my daughter] Seven’s age.”

Speaking of her daughter, Seven is writing poetry as well, as you can see with her first place poem in the junior-high division.

A native of Minnesota, third-place poet Marta Shaffer is in Chico studying literature at Chico State. In addition to being excited and grateful for her poetry being chosen and published for the first time (three times actually; Shaffer also has two honorable mentions in this issue), she says she’s “thankful for the unending support of my dog, Goonie.”

So I looked and looked, and I listened and listened, but those who record things didn’t record it.

I’m pretty clear that I felt it, to the tip of my toes I felt it.

And the taste of it, I’ll never forget the way it tasted.

Checking around I learned that if one were bypassed by the recorders you can tell them off in your epitaph.

I carved my initials in an old tree instead.

It pleases me to think of you, dropping a couple of those dates into your mouth, tasting, chewing, swallowing. ... never losing me.

My Mother Keeps Finding Lions in her Apartment My mother keeps finding lions in her apartment.

Small ones. She says they steal things and leave foreign objects behind: feathers, turquoise beads, pieces of clay pottery.

She says their snoring at night keeps her awake, loud like a New Orleans brass band.

She sometimes catches them staring at her from between objects on the table, and when she goes to pull them out like weeds, they’ve vanished into the lines of an old receipt or a medical bill.

I tried to teach her the term “invasive species,” but she says she doesn’t speak Spanish.

I feared a mining accident, an avalanche into my emotional health.

So I sent my sister in—my unsuspecting canary.

“Mama wants you to call her,” I told her.

My sister called back. I could hear that she was covered in soot, her face smudged.

Spitting into a rag to clean herself off, she whimpered, “That was a dirty trick.”

Winter Solstice The black beetle lumbering across the forest floor shakes off her magnificent exoskeleton, tossing glints of teal and purple into the wan light of deep winter.

She knows the pull of the sun as any creature knows it, and she is certain of the steady hum of earth’s energy permeating her beetle being.

In this thin light, this pallid light, all beings of the forest know the brightness is opening once more.

All creatures celebrate the return of the sun by shaking off their cloaks of winter, by shaking off their exoskeletons and lumbering into the light.

In the west, Snow Mountain appeared robbed of her white robes– but we paid homage to her anyway.

She stood–steadfast, blue, and noble–against the sky while the sun slid like an orange cookie dunking down into hot pink milk poured upon the coastal range.

The first time you took me hiking we climbed over the green gate then down a hill to a gathering of oak trees, a creek cutting through the land.

We talked about sinking ships, rising dawns, and the light you saw when you were very sick.

At the bottom where we rested you unpacked food, almonds and mango salami and cheese an apple cut with a pocketknife, and after we ate, you faced me you rose up on your knees kneeled in gravel and small rocks so that you could look at me and kiss me harder.

To the south, the Buttes jutted up from shadows– like exclamation points, or arched eyebrows.

We spoke of rock shelters and blue heron as the wild onion, lupine, soap root, and oak all yawned and made ready to sleep.

Somewhere in darkening hills beyond coyotes gathered to sing.

Sylvia Pape has nearly always been a top finisher in the CN&R’s Poetry 99 contest over the last four years. The Inspire School of Arts & Sciences senior is an avid writer of poetry and flash fiction and even started a poetry group on campus, The Beat Nerds.

After graduation, she plans to follow in her mother and grandmother’s footsteps by becoming a third-generation Chico State student.

Even though Aline Ingelson-Filpula is an avid reader and enjoys writing poetry (and taking fencing and kung fu classes) in her spare time, The CORE Butte Charter student’s focus is on taking classes toward a biology major. This is her third time placing in a CN&R writing contest.

Writing is just one of the art forms in which the home-schooled Seven Mills is immersed. In addition to writing poetry and fiction, she likes to act and sing. In fact, she and her brother Ender have started their own band, Snowing in May, and are already making the rounds playing local cafés and art galleries.

B

uddy Guy is fighting the good fight—and against all

odds. The blues aren’t the same as they were when the 78-year-old guitarist shot onto the scene six decades ago. Sure, there are some fine guitarists shredding to keep it alive, but in many cases it’s more about style by Mark Lore than substance. And, as with jazz, blues has been relegated to satelmarkl@ lite and public radio, often only newsreview.com finding its way to aging, mostly white ears.

PREVIEW: For younger generations reared Chico on indie rock and hip-hop, the Performances presents blues is a foreign concept. That Buddy Guy, fact hits close to home for Guy. Guy and fellow bluesman B.B. King are two of the last survivors from the old guard—names from a long-ago time.

And with King performing less because of health issues (the 89-year-old bluesman canceled a slew of dates at the end of last year due to dehydration and exhaustion), Guy is the guy. But he’s no stranger to being the odd man out.

Born and raised in Lettsworth, La., Guy’s musical career took off in Chicago in the late-1950s, influenced by the likes of Guitar Slim, Muddy Waters and even King himself. Guy made a name for himself for his bold and electrifying style.

“I was playing at a lot of the blues clubs, and a lot of blues players were sittin’ down in chairs and playin’, and had their music stands,” he recalled.

“But I went on the stage and kicked them stands out the way and jumped off the stage, and they said, ‘Y’all better watch him.’”

That included labels. But it wasn’t for the reasons he’d hoped. He signed a deal with Chess Records, whose co-founder Leonard Chess wanted Guy to record a standard R&B record. Guy refused to change his flamboyant style of guitar playing, and was used solely as a studio musician for Chess.

“When you blast that amplifier and turn it up it has a different effect than an acoustic guitar,” he said. “In other words, you had the feedback and all that. And I was doin’ it and people was lovin’ it, but was nobody paying attention at no record company.

But it didn’t discourage me.”

But while he was being shunned by some of his peers, up-and-coming guitar heroes like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck took notice. Guy hit his stride in the late-1960s and early 1970s with albums like A Man and the Blues and Buddy and the Juniors, mixing blues with the frenetic style of rock ’n’ roll. His 1980s output was spotty, but Guy came back strong with 1991’s Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues, which featured some of the artists he influenced, like Clapton and Beck.

Even in his leanest years Guy kept at it, playing the blues through countless shifts in pop music. “[Calling it quits] crosses your mind,” Guy said.

“But it’s like a prizefighter, man—if you get knocked down and lay down, you ain’t got a chance to win. But if you stand up and keep swingin’, you might get a lucky punch.”

These days, Guy seems even more determined to stay in the ring. He does it for the younger generations. He does it for his kids. But mostly he does it for the bluesmen who helped shape him into the man and the guitarist he is today.

“They all used to tell me, ‘Keep it going, Buddy, keep the blues alive.’And it’s like I went to sleep and woke up, and they all gone. I think me and B.B. are about the last two from that era still out there,” Guy said with a hint of lament in his voice. “I gotta do what I gotta do to keep this music alive.” Ω

He died one April evening a decade ago after having spent the day harvesting in his beloved fields. Mother says he poured himself a tall glass of Bordeaux, put two artichokes on to steam and sat back to watch the evening news.

Apparently, the hearts of his violets were healthier than his own. He never got back up.

Though I hadn’t seen him in nearly 20 years, and our relationship was, well, strained, I still miss him dearly and will always have him to thank for the path my life has taken—though it wasn’t, he’d insist, the path he’d imagined for his only son. He was, after all, the one who first took me as a young boy to see Some Like It Hot. If my father were alive today, I’d insist on a reunion. I’d invite him out to California, and together we’d drive down to Castroville, where we’d celebrate not only artichokes, but also the only thing we ever really had in common, our love of Marilyn Monroe, who, in 1948, was named the Castroville Artichoke Festival’s first honorary Artichoke Queen.

A member of the sunflower family and native to the Mediterranean, the artichoke—al-khurshuf in Arabic—was popular in early Rome but then virtually disappeared until the mid-1600s, when Catherine de Medici brought it from Italy to France, the home of her husband, Henry II. Recognizing the ideal, Mediterranean-like climate of the central California coast, Italian immigrants established California’s first artichoke farm in the late19th century near Half Moon Bay. Today, California produces nearly 100 percent of the country’s commercial artichoke crop, and in 2013 it was declared the state’s official vegetable.

The most common California artichoke is the green globe, recognizable by its thorny leaves and purple flowers. However, farmers and University of California scientists have been experimenting with other varieties, including the imperial star, which is not only thornless but matures sooner and produces a higher yield. Studies, however, have shown that consumers prefer the green globe for its meatier leaves and bigger heart.

Artichokes are cooked and eaten in a range of ways.

Fresh, they’re stuffed, baked and braised, and of course year-round the marinated hearts are the perfect complements to bean-and-pasta salads and antipasto plates.

Additionally, modern chefs are using them in a variety of salads—including artichokes browned in olive oil and served with fava beans and shallots, and sliced raw and tossed with arugula and fresh, grated Parmesan.

Still, the best way to enjoy an artichoke is in its pure form, steamed, one leaf at a time. My father loved them with bay shrimp and aioli, a classic Mediterranean egg-yolk-and-olive-oil, mayonnaise-like dressing.

Here’s to you and me, mon père, a couple of misfits.

Artichokes with bay shrimp and aioli Ingredients: Four artichokes 1/2 lb. cooked bay shrimp 2 egg yolks 1 cup olive oil 4 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed Lemon juice Salt

With kitchen shears, trim sharp points from outer leaves of artichokes and cut stem to within a half-inch of the base. Steam upside down until stem is tender to a fork. Allow to cool.

In medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks and then gradually stir in the olive oil. Add the crushed garlic, and lemon juice and salt to taste. Add the bay shrimp.

Spoon out the inner leaves of the artichoke and fill each “bowl” with the shrimp-and-aioli mixture. Dip artichoke leaves into the mixture, making sure that each has at least one shrimp on it. Ω

Fourth of July Creek Smith Henderson HarperCollins

Fourth of July Creek is a big novel (466 pages) about small Western towns and the people—many of them poor and hurting—who live in them. Its main character, oddly for a novel set in Montana, is a social worker, but Pete Snow’s job serves the story well, injecting him into the lives of families struggling with addiction, depression and the death of hope, even as his own life threatens to spin out of control. Parallel plots—one involving his runaway teenage daughter, the other a reclusive, Revelations-addled survivalist, Jeremiah Pearl, and his 12-year-old son, Benjamin—enlarge the story, as Smith Henderson explores what it means to be a parent in a world where failure is rampant and society’s strictures are as dangerous as the behaviors they abjure. Snow is an alcoholic who’s estranged from his druggie wife and daughter—as he says to his ex, “I take kids away from people like us”—but he’s got a warm heart, which is why he tries to help the Pearls despite the father’s hostility. Henderson’s richly earthy but unromantic style is reminiscent of other great Western writers—Cormac McCarthy, Jim Harrison and Wallace Stegner come to mind—and this impressive debut is fitting company with the best of their work.

Superfight Skybound Entertainment Card game

Pirates versus ninjas, Batman versus Superman; there are matchups that will always spark debate. Superfight turns the hypotheticals into a card game where players create outrageous fighters—such as a crazy cat lady who can control hair while driving the Popemobile—then face off, arguing which freak would win in a fight. Superfight heavily borrows from popular party games such as Apples to Apples and Cards Against Humanity, but the crucial difference is the addition of debate among players. It may seem minor, until a party guest successfully argues the crazy cat lady has a chance against King Kong leading a team of trained velociraptors with machetes. As with the best games, a lot of Superfight’s success rests on the makeup of the group playing.

With the right players, Superfight facilitates and encourages the group’s natural dynamic, which is why it excels in the party game genre. Players can further tailor the game to the group with expansions that add locations, scenarios and themed cards—with nerd culture or kid- or adultonly additions—and Superfight’s recent partnership with producer Skybound will undoubtedly lead to more expansions. Though Superfight may ultimately fall to the established reign of Cards Against Humanity, it’ll be one hell of a fight.

Death Cab for Cutie Atlantic It’s been more than three years since Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard’s divorce from actress Zooey Deschanel. But any doubts as to whether the split is still weighing on his mind are dispelled quickly on Kintsugi. The chorus of album opener “No Room in Frame” finds Gibbard asking, rhetorically, “Was I in your way when the cameras turned to face you?” Burn! And that is just the first of many unambiguous swipes at his famous, former spouse and her home city of Los Angeles. Kintsugi is equally notable as the first Death Cab album not to be produced by now-former guitarist Chris Walla, who recorded with the band for the album but has since departed.

But rather than sound rudderless without Walla in the producer’s chair, the band takes subtle, but concerted, strides toward a fresh sound. Death Cab has never not been a pop band, but Kintsugi is arguably the band’s poppiest effort to date. Not even Gibbard’s sardonic musings can overcome the unabashedly upbeat handclaps and bubbly synths on “Good Help (Is So Hard to Find).” Looking back lyrically, while moving forward musically, Kintsugi is the fitting first chapter of the leaner, meaner Death Cab for Cutie.

All the difference Remembering Dr. Loveall, or how I graduated high school and learned to love poetry

Btionwandered so far from the path to timely graduathat I was lost in the figurative yellow wood of y the end of my junior year of high school, I’d

misspent youth. I was a full year’s worth of credits deficient, in English of all things, by and had reached a spot where, my Ken Smith guidance counselor informed me, two roads diverged. The first, most kens@ newsrev iew.c om often chosen by misfits like myself, led straight to continuation school, where I could make up the work by quitting smoking and writing book reports on Garfield comics. The other path was to simultaneously enroll at the local junior college during my last year of high school, and make up the missing units by taking night classes.

So it was I ended up in a Shasta College poetry class taught by Dr. James Loveall for three hours every Monday night for the first half of 1994.

Decades on, those class sessions remain firmly and fondly in my memory because of the respect I developed for Loveall. He was bent, battered and mostly blinded by age when I met him, and hobbled to and from the classroom assisted by his wife, who would sit mostly silent in the back of the classroom, ready to assist him when his body or mind began to falter.

I do not mean to characterize Loveall as a doddering old man, because for the most part his mind was incredibly sound. Each week, he’d choose a sample representing a different poetic form—rondeaux, sonnets, etc.—and delve into how they were constructed, their history and who was known for writing them. We’d also write our own samples in the assigned form each week. He taught us there’s a difference between verse and poetry, and warned us we’d likely write some good samples of the former but none of the latter. Though he’d been published and won awards for his own work since his teens, he claimed he’d been trying for more than 50 years to write something better than “good verse.”

Loveall lectured entirely from memory, each session reciting several complete poems as examples, and peppered his lectures with humanizing anecdotes about the greats, some of whom—like Robert Frost and Dylan Thomas—he’d even seen read in person as a teenager and young adult in the 1930s and ’40s.

I particularly remember him talking about Thomas

appearing on stage with a cocktail in his shaky hand and proceeding to nervously stumble through his poems for several minutes, but blossoming into a beautiful reader—the best Loveall ever saw, he recalled—halfway through his third drink.

Loveall’s mental slips ranged from minor—losing his train of thought—to utterly magnificent instances when he would lose himself in the literature he’d loved so deeply and for so long, and begin reciting long passages. When this happened, he too would seemingly transform, the years lifting from his crooked frame, a spark lighting his eyes.

On one occasion, Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales came up in conversation, and Loveall spontaneously recited the first several hundred words of the work ... in its original Middle English! On another, he defused a volatile argument started by the easily offended middle-aged born-again Christian (present in every Shasta College classroom) by shifting the conversation from the Bible’s arguable moral value to its undeniable literary value. He explained how King James commissioned the greatest writers in England to pen the version that bears his name, possibly including William Shakespeare. He paused a moment, then began to recite—with perfect rhythm, meter and dramatic intonation—“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth, and the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, and God said, Let there be light: and there was light ...”

He continued reciting Genesis, word for word, until midway through the second chapter, then he abruptly stopped, stooped again, looked a little confused, and apologized for getting off track. There was, of course, no need; the entire classroom erupted in applause, much of the class rising for a standing ovation. More than 20 years later, I still get chills remembering it.

Loveall’s passion for poetry and literature helped fan the flames of my own. Despite my hatred of high school, he showed me what college could and should be like, which fueled me to keep going. His commitment to his crafts, both writing and teaching, remain an inspiration to me. Had I taken the easier route back then I likely never would have had the honor of meeting him, and others like him … and that has made all the difference. □

’71 , a young British soldier named Gary Hook (Jack IdaynO’Connell) gets stranded behind rebel lines on his first of duty in Northern Ireland. He flees, as best he can, in

the general direction of his army encampment, but soon finds himself more or less at the mercy of the local population. by Juan-Carlos Out of necessity, the frenzied escape Selznick morphs into a labyrinthian navigation of the locals’ convolutedly mixed sympathies. And that labyrinth is made even more perilous by the various intrusions of British undercover agents who seem to have their own separate agendas.

As the title suggests, the year is 1971, a particularly bloody one for sectarian violence in Belfast during the so-called Troubles. The film ’71 takes us inside the conflict, with the tough, Ends tonight, good-natured Gary, the film’s presiding pointApril 2. Starring of-view character, as our unwitting guide.

First-time director Yann Demange and Directed by screenwriter Gregory Burke present this as an Yann Demange.

Pageant Theatre. offbeat kind of political thriller. There’s no Rated R. mistaking the political and historical elements of this tale, but ’71 does not favor one side or the other in the conflict it portrays. Instead, via the emerging perspective of Gary, the entire conflict amounts to little more than culturally empowered gang warfare.

As a result, ’71 is more film noir than Poor political drama. In a crucial sense, it is a crime film set in a run-down city, with the general population doing whatever it can to stay out of the line of fire. Armed men in Fair civilian clothing are more dangerous and pervasive than any men in uniform. Soldiers are more target than threat.

Good Burke’s script creates some of its starkest ironies through characters who are preteen boys. Some are already itching for violent combat. One seems to have the makings of a Very Good born leader, but to what ends is not known.

Another, Gary’s little brother, might have some real hope for a completely separate kind Excellent of peace . Ω

The title character in this mildly comical,

low-key fantasy/treasure hunt is a young Japanese woman who lives alone and works at a spectacularly dull office job. In the scenario cooked up by the Zellner brothers— David (who also directs) and Nathan (who is a producer)—Kumiko (Rinko Kikuchi) is taken with the notion that the Coen brothers’ Fargo is a documentary and that her beat-up VHS copy of that 1996 film reveals the exact location of the suitcase full of cash that Steve Buscemi is seen burying in a snow-covered field.

Her overbearing mother and her flaky friends from school and work all clamor for her company, but she prefers solitude and bits of playtime with a tiny pet rabbit named Bunzo. When she gets fed up with serving as one of her boss’ identically dressed “Office Ladies,” she absconds with a company credit card and heads for Minnesota.

Much of the film seems surreal in a cold and almost abstract way. The scrawny warmth that keeps sparking the story back to life (in spite of the bleak, lifeless settings that predominate in Japan and Minnesota alike) is partly a matter of Kikuchi’s quietly luminous performance, partly a matter of the wry comedy of manners that trickles through the Minnesota scenes. And perhaps best of all, there’s the Zellners’ success in keeping the atmosphere of fairy tale alive in the unlikeliest of circumstances. Ω

Cinderella

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Kingsman is a comical action film, with secret agents, high-tech weaponry, and international espionage, as well as intermittent jolts of crazed satire and broad spoofs of several sorts. It’s a mostly entertaining stew of movie ingredients, but erratic in ways that dilute and dull down the whole enterprise. While the spoofing of James Bond films is mostly affectionate and inconsequential, the parts of the story involving spy agencies, Internet moguls, global conspiracies, and semi-futuristic technology are a rather unstable mix of sci-fi extravagance, furious satire and fanboy jokiness. Colin Firth, who plays a foppish variation on the Bond-type super spy, acquits himself nicely in the dialog scenes but is pretty clearly out of his element in the movie’s blindingly souped-up fight scenes. Samuel L. Jackson is sharp and stingingly funny as the wide-eyed, lisping Internet mogul with sinister plans.

Taron Egerton is mostly likable as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, the fledgling secret agent whom the veteran Harry Hart (Firth) hopes to bring to the special “Kingsman” branch of the British secret services. Cinemark 14.

I HAVE SYN IN MY HEART By now, most locals know that the last issue of the Synthesis was printed this week. And the reality of it has kind of caught Arts DEVO off guard. Despite the many arrows slung across downtown in its direction from this columnist’s desk over the years, I really didn’t hate the paper. Kind of like the greater Chico social sphere that its “synthesis” of voices was meant to represent, there was—for most of its incarnations—a handful of passionate and righteous rockers whom I dug for making their own fun at the center of an oppressively boring mob of Cheeko! douchebags puking out half-assed nonsense all around them. Today, I actually count many of those righteous folks (and maybe even a few of the douchy ones) as friends, or at least friendly acquaintances. And knowing how big of a part the Synthesis played in their personal and professional lives, I’m bummed for their loss.

To be honest, during the Syn’s first decade (before Arts DEVO was a twinkle in my eye), I was stoked any time one of my own bands or a show I was putting on was featured in its pages. I even wrote a couple of articles for the paper (about my own events, naturally) back in the day. So, as I look back at the bigger picture of the party the Synthesis was able to sustain for itself and the local scene, even though I still think that most of the back-and-forth between our papers was good dirty fun, I do regret a couple of the more stinky turds I dropped into their punch bowl. Oh well, too late to take back my party fouls now. All I can say is, thanks for the fun times and best of luck to all of the staff, past and present. See you on the town.

THE MUSIC SCENE I’ve been here since 1989 and heavily involved in one way or another with local music that entire time. I’ve experienced many of the fondly remembered heady times: The Burro Room/Wall Street era. The Whispering Clam and Blue Room shows. The sustained miracle of that most egalitarian burrito shop, Juanita’s (and its shortlived successors, the Riff Raff, et. al.). The good ol’ days at LaSalles. DNA and his Downtown Music Revolution. The beautiful mess of The Moxies era.

Rene Fulcrum and Fulcrum Records. Monstros and the punks. Many nights of big noise at little Café Coda.

All of those good times were marked by a variety of great Chico bands playing local venues (usually all-ages) that were committed to bringing up-and-coming touring bands to town to play with. It is the recipe for a great scene (artistically/socially at least; no one involved in any of the above got rich).

I’d have to say that today, after a recent drop off in energy, I think we are moving toward another peak. The Maltese has at least one great rock/indie/punk bill a week and Lost on Main has been killing it by pairing local groove makers with an impressive roster of visiting funk/jam/rock acts several times a month. The Chico Area Punks are still kicking up sawdust at Monstros and Café Coda is still doing a couple shows a month. But the deciding factor will be the 1078 Gallery.

It’s all-ages and the new beer license will keep the of-age scenesters from bolting. If they can tap into some exciting veins of touring acts and combine them with a nice range of locals, then maybe …

Speaking of locals, I think Chico has as big of a collection of active, distinctly original bands in the scene as I’ve seen in a long time. You could even put them on fantasy bills with some of the better Chico groups of the last few decades and not even blink: Cold Blue Mountain and Trench. Michelin Embers and The Asskickers. Severance Package and Fat Chick From Wilson Phillips. MaMuse and The Mother Hips. Surrogate and The Imps. Swamp Zen and Stone Blossom. West By Swan and The Downsiders.

Bunnymilk and Vomit Launch. Clouds on Strings and Pitchfork Tuning.

FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 2, 2015 ARIES (March 21-April 19): “Cho-

coniverous” is an English slang word that’s defined as having the tendency, when eating a chocolate Easter bunny, to bite the head off first. I recommend that you adopt this direct approach in everything you do in the coming weeks. Don’t get bogged down with preliminaries.

Don’t get sidetracked by minor details, trivial distractions or peripheral concerns. It’s your duty to swoop straight into the center of the action. Be clear about what you want and unapologetic about getting it.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The

American snack cake known as a Twinkie is 68 percent air. Among its 37 other mostly worthless ingredients are sugar, water, cornstarch, the emulsifier polysorbate 60, the filler sodium stearoyl lactylate and food coloring. You can’t get a lot of nutritious value by eating it.

Now let’s consider the fruit known as the watermelon. It’s 91 percent water and 6 percent sugar. And yet it also contains a good amount of Vitamin C, lycopene and antioxidants, all of which are healthy for you. So if you are going to eat a whole lot of nothing, watermelon is a far better nothing than a Twinkie. Let that serve as an apt metaphor for you in the coming week.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You may

be as close as you have ever gotten to finding the long-lost Holy Grail—or Captain Kidd’s pirate treasure, for that matter, or Marie Antoinette’s jewels, or Tinkerbell’s magical fairy dust or the smoking-gun evidence that Shakespeare’s plays were written by Francis Bacon. At the very least, I suspect you are ever-so-near to your personal equivalent of those precious goods. Is there anything you can do to increase your chances of actually getting it? Here’s one tip: Visualize in detail how acquiring the prize would inspire you to become even more generous and magnanimous than you already are.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): People

are paying attention to you in new ways.

That’s what you wanted, right? You’ve been emanating subliminal signals that convey messages like “Gaze into my eternal eyes” and “Bask in the cozy glow of my crafty empathy.” So now what?

Here’s one possibility: Go to the next level. Show the even-more-interesting beauty that you’re hiding below the surface. You may not think you’re ready to offer the gifts you have been “saving for later.” But you always think that. I dare you to reveal more of your deep, secret power.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Some people

believe unquestioningly in the truth and power of astrology. They imagine it’s an exact science that can unfailingly discern character and predict the future. Other people believe all astrology is nonsense.

They think that everyone who uses it is deluded or stupid. I say that both of these groups are wrong. Both have a simplistic, uninformed perspective. to the Biblical stories, Peter was Christ’s closest disciple, but acted like a traitor when trouble came. After Christ was arrested, in the hours before the trial, Peter denied knowing his cherished teacher three different times. His fear trumped his love, leading him to violate his sacred commitment. Is there anything remotely comparable to that scenario developing in your own sphere, Virgo? If you recognize any tendencies in yourself to shrink from your devotion or violate your highest principles, I urge you to

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Marketing

Porter’s song “I Get a Kick Out of You,” he testifies that he gets no kick from champagne. In fact, “Mere alcohol doesn’t thrill me at all,” he sings. The same is true about cocaine. “I’m sure that if I took even one sniff that would bore me terrifically, too,” Porter declares. With this as your nudge, Scorpio, and in accordance with the astrological omens, I encourage you to identify the titillations that no longer provide you with the pleasurable jolt they once did. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

The English writer William Wordsworth (1770-1850) wrote hundreds of poems.

Among his most famous was “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud,” which is also known as “Daffodils.” The poem sprung from him after a walk he took with his sister around Lake Ullswater in the English Lake District. There they were delighted to find a long, thick belt of daffodils growing close to the water. In his poem, Wordsworth praises the “ten thousand” flowers that were “Continuous as the stars that shine / And twinkle on the milky way.” If you are ever going to have your own version of a daffodil explosion that inspires a burst of creativity, Sagittarius, it will come in the coming weeks.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

Your subconscious desires and your conscious desires seem to be at odds.

LOVE’S REAL ESTATE Put ‘em Up Are you one of the many among us breaking the law by leaving people defenseless to the silent killer carbon monoxide?

In the real estate field, we come across too many houses and apartments without carbon monoxide detectors, despite the fact that the laws requiring them are several years old. Granted, government notification about carbon monoxide laws has been sporadic, pathetic and weak.

But people can be fined and sued for not being in compliance. Worse, people are still dying from carbon monoxide poisoning when a simple device could save them.

Think cars without seat belts. Not that long ago we sped around safety-free.

The carbon monoxide detector law is in two parts.

One part is for homeowners and the other part is for rental property owners.

Homeowners were required to have installed carbon monoxide detectors in their homes by July 1, 2011.

Rental property owners were required to have installed carbon monoxide detectors in their rental properties by January 1, 2013.

Any property with an appliance or heater that burns fuel of any kind (wood, gas, oil, charcoal, coal; anything that burns) must comply. Think heaters, water heaters, dryers, fireplaces, and the like.

To the lingering questions: Q. What’s the big deal with carbon monoxide?

A. Unfortunately, there are far too many cases

of carbon monoxide poisonings and deaths.

Defective heaters, water heaters, fireplaces, stoves and appliances are the culprits. The gas is odorless, colorless and tasteless. It disorients its victims, puts them to sleep and eventually kills them, when all they need is some fresh air.

Q. Where exactly in each home or rental unit should the carbon monoxide detectors be installed?

A. “Unfortunately the law doesn’t speak to exact placement of the Detectors,” says the Fire Department, “but we recommend installing detectors centrally located outside of all bedroom areas in the house, and on all floors of multi-story homes, including basements.”

Q. Both plug-in and ceiling-mounted models of detectors are on the market. Is it okay to plug the detectors in at floor level?

A. Carbon monoxide is “neutrally buoyant” in air, slightly lighter than air, so it builds slowly. Therefore, a floor-level detector will work theoretically, but might not be advisable because it could be dislodged or tampered with more easily. There are many varieties of ceiling-mounted models available, including combination smoke detector and carbon monoxide detectors.

First step, put ‘em up. Get the carbon monoxide detector and install it. Homeowner: just do it.

Landlord: you do it, too. Tenant: tell your Landlord to do it.

You already have the seat belts in your cars.

Now get the carbon monoxide detectors in your houses and apartments.
