those with disabilities, animals—are among the most heinous crimes law enforcement personnel encounter.

We are deeply disturbed this week, then, by reports alleging severe neglect of a Paradise woman who reportedly died as a result of her weakened state, caused, according to the district attorney, by malnourishment and festering open bed sores (see Tom Gascoyne’s report on page 8). What’s further unsettling is that one of the people charged with caring for the woman was a relative who had undergone training to recognize elder abuse.

That caregiver, along with her husband, the victim’s son, now face criminal charges, second-degree murder and elder abuse, respectively. If they are found guilty, we’d urge the court to impose the strictest of sentences. That wouldn’t bring back the victim, 68-year-old Deanna Schorovsky, but it might send a message to other senior caregivers in the region.

Sadly, elder abuse is not an uncommon occurrence. And it comes in many forms, including physical, psychological and financial. In recent weeks, for example, the CN&R wrote about a local banker who allegedly stole about $88,000 from a resident of a local assisted-living facility. Fortunately, a tipster alerted authorities—Butte County Adult Protective Services—to some red flags that led to the man’s arrest.

It’s imperative for citizens who suspect elder abuse is taking place to report their concerns to local protective service agencies or law enforcement. Research indicates that up to 1.2 million elderly Americans are mistreated each year, but experts also estimate that for every reported case, another five go unreported. In short, we must all be watchful of our community’s elderly residents to ensure their emotional and physical well-being. Ω

Crossing the line It was bad enough that Speaker of the House John Boehner invited Israeli

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak to a joint session of Congress in a partisan attempt to undermine the Obama administration’s nuclear-weapons negotiations with Iran.

Then, this week, 47 Republican senators sent a letter to leaders in Iran further injecting politics into the mix. In an unprecedented—and shocking—move, they warned the Iranians that any deal worked out could be scrubbed in two years, when Obama leaves office. As Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin pointed out, it was “an overt effort to jeopardize peace negotiations.”

And, as President Obama noted, it’s quite ironic that Republican lawmakers were trying to “make common cause with the hardliners in Iran” who also want the talks to fail. “It’s an unusual coalition,” he said wryly.

It’s not as if Netanyahu and the Republican senators offer any alternative to the negotiations. Under the interim agreement now in place, Iran has significantly scaled back its nuclear ambitions and opened its borders to inspections. The failure to reach a permanent agreement will undoubtedly lead it to revert to its covert rush to arms—a path that is likely to lead to war with Israel.

Ironies abound. There is reason to believe, for instance, as Time magazine’s Joe Klein has written, that Netanyahu’s “bluster and bombing threats have been invaluable to the negotiating process. He’s been a scary-tough cop to President Obama’s sorta-tough constable,” and could further convince the Iranians of the value of an agreement.

Similarly, the Republicans’ letter may have alienated the dozen or so Senate Democrats who were inclined to join Republicans in creating a veto-proof coalition opposed to an agreement with Iran. By injecting such rank partisanship into treaty negotiations, the Republicans have crossed the line separating responsible from irresponsible leadership. Ω

Nice people One of the best parts of my job is getting to meet members of the community, and it’s especially rewarding when they are genuinely nice people.

Well, we lost a good one last weekend, when Rick Rees passed away suddenly at the too-young age of 63.

Rees was a longtime member of the Chico Unified School District board of trustees, but I knew him in his role as the associate director of Student Activities at Chico State, where he worked for more than 30 years. Rees was a go-to guy for me, back when I was the higher-education beat reporter for the local daily.

I loved talking to him because he was a straight shooter. When I sought information about the latest student scandal—such as the Chico fraternity whose members ended up in a porn film—Rees didn’t sugarcoat things. He didn’t give me some public relations drivel or the careful nonanswers typical of some administrators.

Moreover, he possessed a vast institutional memory of student organizations.

In other words, he was a damn good source.

My interactions with him were all on a professional level, but I couldn’t help but like Rees. In addition to being a wealth of knowledge, he was a heck of a nice guy. After I became editor of this newspaper, he sent a thoughtful email congratulating me. My thoughts are with his family and friends as they mourn his passing.

Speaking of nice people, on Saturday I finally met Edgar Ovalle and Sharon Stern, the Chico couple who are park watchers extraordinaire. My husband and I, with our 3-year-old son in tow, ran into them, naturally, while riding our bikes in Bidwell Park.

I was pleased to make their acquaintance outside of our morning ritual of waving hello to each other as I head into work, me in my car and Ovalle and Stern typically sitting on a bench near the roundabout at Vallombrosa and Manzanita. I’m happy to report that they are as friendly and engaging in person as I’d hoped.

Stern was jogging and Ovalle riding his bike when Ovalle and I recognized each other just as we were passing in opposite directions. We had a nice chat during that chance encounter. The couple know hundreds of people from their volunteer work at the park, but since being featured in the pages of the CN&R a few weeks ago, they’re recognized more than ever.

Another Chico celebrity. Alec Angel, a fifth-grader at Hooker Oak Elementary School, took home first place in the county spelling bee last week. He—along with runner-up June Majer, a sixth-grader from Shasta Elementary School—will compete next month at the California State Elementary Spelling Bee in Stockton. I know Alec through his mom and dad, Devanie and Tom, who worked for many years at the CN&R, as associate editor and photographer, respectively. Congrats to the younger Angel for his big win, and kudos to his parents for rearing such a nice kid and ace speller.

Frustrated by the noise The noise pollution from the Silver Dollar Speedway allows no peace within my home whatsoever. I’m sure the boys who pour gasoline into their toys and carbon into the atmosphere feel they have a civic right to do so. They can drive in circles, getting nowhere, producing nothing except noise if they want to, so they say.

But their civic right is exceeding their civic responsibility. They don’t acknowledge that they live in a community and have an obligation to honor the residents of that community. I don’t know if noise ordinances are being broken. My frustration is not that laws are being broken, but that a small segment of the population assumes that their right to what they call fun trumps any other consideration.

The peace of our neighbors should be part of our social contract. If my music were penetrating my neighbor’s walls to the extent that the Speedway’s racket from 2 miles away penetrates mine, they would rightfully call the police and I would be asked to crank it down. I have no recourse to the noise that assaults me every weekend. Thanks for listening over the noise.

Desperately seeking crosswalk Re “Waiting to cross” (Newslines, by Tom Gascoyne, Feb. 5): I was in the meeting with Ruben Martinez and I felt that he was telling us that the city will be in the black in a few years. Then he said we can get this closer to a resolution by going after bonds that would help pay for the crossing [outside the Work Training Center]. He also said that the city has other projects in the works and money has been set aside to pay for those. The city just can’t afford to put in a crosswalk until it’s in better shape.

I felt that this was just another delay tactic, so I talked to him afterward and told him that a stop sign at 23rd Street would work. It would provide a crossing as well as slow down traffic.

It makes sense to put one there. I wonder how he would feel if he had to cross the street using a wheelchair? I would think he would change his priorities if he had to do that every day.

Someone is going to get hurt there, and I feel that it will happen before the city acts. We are LETTERS continued on page 6

Over the past few months since Measure A passed, I have read quite a few letters in this newspaper from those who refer to Measure A as “intimidation” and “bullying” from both the Butte County Board of Supervisors and Sheriff’s Office; preventing sick people from getting their medicine.

Whether we like it or not, chances are good that California voters will approve a 2016 initiative to legalize marijuana for adults over 21. I have mixed feelings about this proposal and will need to see that medical marijuana patients retain their rights to grow their own medicine after recreational use is legalized before I will support this effort.

Environmental gathering Do you consider yourself to be a part of the environmental community? I personally believe that coming together to talk about environmental issues is an important notion. There is one event that I look forward to where all the organizations come together and give insight on personal projects they’ve been working on. The part I look forward to the most is the ability to have that face-to-face interaction to discuss the significant issues that face our environment.

The Environmental Community Gathering—the final event of the annual This Way to Sustainability conference—is from 5:308 p.m. March 27 at the C.A.R.D. Center and I will most definitely be attending. This event is free for all ages and I certainly encourage everyone to come.

FORMER DEPUTY CLEARED OF ASSAULT

A Butte County jury found a former Yuba County sheriff’s deputy not guilty Friday (March 6) of felony charges of battery and assault and dissuading a witness by force.

The case stemmed from a scuffle on St. Patrick’s Day last year in downtown Chico between the then-deputy Nelson Magana and a man—a stranger to Magana—named Felipe Zabala that started in the restroom area of the building at Second Street and Broadway that houses Burgers & Brew.

Witnesses gave differing accounts, with some blaming Magana and others blaming Zabala, who was reportedly knocked unconscious. Both men had high levels of alcohol in their bloodstreams.

Magana was laid off from the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office soon after the incident and filed a personal injury lawsuit against Zabala last August. That case is set for consideration March 24.

STUDENT KILLED AT HOUSE PARTY

A fight at a house party in the south campus neighborhood turned deadly over the weekend, as Chico State student Travis Taylor Powell, 22, was shot and killed and five others were seriously injured.

Early in the morning of Saturday (March 7), Powell was attending a party near West Seventh and Oak streets, where a fight broke out and spilled into the roadway, police reported in a press release. Officers responded to a report of a shooting shortly after 1 a.m.; Powell and two other people had been shot, two more were stabbed and another was struck in the face with a glass bottle. Powell died after being taken to Enloe Medical Center.

As of press time, Chico police hadn’t identified any suspects in the homicide.

Anyone with information relevant to the case is encouraged to call the Chico Police Department Detective Bureau at 897-5820.

LOCAL DRONE PROTESTER ARRESTED

Local peace activist Chris Nelson (pictured) was arrested Friday (March 6) for criminal trespassing at Nevada’s Creech Air Force Base while protesting the military’s expanding use of drones. Nelson said about 150 people, including 40 Veterans for Peace, briefly blocked both of the base’s gates, resulting in 34 arrests, including two juveniles from Shasta County. Nelson said she had arrived on Tuesday (March 3) to join the others who had gathered the weekend before.

“At night, bright lights were blasted at us so it was like day, helicopters flew over us, military folks squealed their tires, but I felt snug in the sub-freezing desert nights surrounded by the profoundly loving and thoughtful folks tenting near me and my dog,” she said.

Nelson was cited on federal trespassing charges in a similar protest at Beale Air Force Base near Marysville on Nov. 25.

He said daughter-in-law Sandy called 911 to report the woman’s declining mental and physical health. Medics arrived and reportedly noticed a number of skin wounds called pressure ulcers.

She was taken to the hospital, where she was also found to be severely malnourished.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Deanna Schorovsky’s mental and physical health had declined to the point where she could no longer speak or move on her own.

Sandy Schorovsky worked as the activities coordinator for an area seniorcitizen care home and had received training in how to identify signs of elder abuse and neglect, Ramsey said.

“We’re charging this as a murder based on her very special knowledge, and we have her training records indicating that she should have definitely known better,” he said. “This is what we call an implied-malice murder.”

Sandy Schorovsky was charged with one count of second-degree murder with bail set at $1 million. Gavin Schorovsky, whom Ramsey described as “a laborer” was charged with elder abuse causing death and his bail was set at $150,000, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release.

The victim suffered from early dementia and had become increasingly immobile over the years, requiring more and more care than she apparently was

receiving, Ramsey said. He noted that she had not been taken to a doctor or given prescription medicine since January 2012, even though the couple had been told by relatives to take her in for medical care for the sores they had seen.

“The couple said they had been cleaning her in some sort of bathtubshower combination,” Ramsey said.

“But the sheriff’s officers responding out there found spider webs in the shower, indicating it hadn’t been used for quiet some time.”

The Federal Housing Authority reports

that an estimated “700,000 to 1.2 million elderly people (4 percent of all adults older than 65) are subjected to elder mistreatment in the United States [yearly] and that there are 450,000 new cases annually.”

According to Butte County Adult Protective Services, the population most vulnerable to abuse, neglect or exploitation are those with physical disabilities or frailties and/or developmental or emotional disabilities. The abuse can be physical, psycological, financial or due to neglect and abandonment, which means not caring for someone unable to provide his or her basic daily necessities.

Signs of physical abuse include bodily injury, cuts, bruises, burns and deprivation of food and water.

The Adult Protective Services website says “state law requires mandated reporters to report on all suspicions of

physical abuse, neglect, financial abuse, abandonment, isolation, abduction or other treatment resulting in physical harm, pain or mental suffering.”

The “mandated reporter” is anyone who’s assumed full- or part-time responsibility for the care or custody of an elder or dependent adult, whether paid or not.

Following the phone call from Feather

River Hospital regarding the suspected elder abuse, the Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into Schorovsky’s death.

It was lengthy and included checking in with various health experts on how long it would take to have the type of sores she had present themselves, as well as their relative dangers.

“The immediate cause of death was from morphine poisoning,” Ramsey said.

“After she was taken in and stabilized at the hospital, she was put into hospice care, where she was given morphine to try to comfort her. She died because of her body’s inability to process the morphine.”

Sandy Schorovsky was arrested at the senior citizen residence where she worked and her husband was arrested at the couple’s house.

“She was the activities coordinator and working at such a home you have to go through training to recognize elder abuse and how to follow up with proper care,” Ramsey said. “She was arrested [while] taking care of another elder at the home.”

The couple were arraigned Friday (March 6) and scheduled to enter their respective pleas in Butte County Superior Court on Thursday (March 12). According to court records, the most serious offense previously charged against either one was a 2006 DUI with a prior against Gavin Schorovsky for which he failed to appear. Sandy Schorovsky was charged in the past for speeding, and having dogs running at large and/or not being licensed in Paradise.

Ramsey said there has been some concern voiced that press releases and the subsequent stories carried in the local media have suggested the couple lived in Oroville when they in fact live in unincorporated Butte County nearer to Paradise. The Schorovskys’ only connection to Oroville is that their residence is within Oroville’s postal district.

Based on the serious nature of the case, the link to Oroville has cast a misdirected light on the county seat, some say. So much so, Ramsey said, that John Loewe, publisher of the weekly paper the Oroville Community Mirror, which has close ties with the Oroville Chamber of Commerce, recently called the DA’s office to express his concerns that the city was “getting a bad rap” in connection to the Schorovsky case.

Ramsey told Loewe he understood the concern and that he would be aware of it when talking with the press about the case. Ω

picking it up, when are they planning on coming, and what’s with the higher bill?— then you might have called someone who works for the county, such as recycling coordinator Steve Rodowick.

If so, Rodowick’s answering machine recording may have told you to contact him by email instead. As a robotic voice explained, “No messages may be taken for this mailbox. It is full.”

The recording is one indication that, in the week since adopting a new waste-hauling franchise agreement, county officials have been bombarded with questions and complaints. (More than 500 concerned citizens called since the transition began on March 1.) Another is the way Paul Hahn, the county’s chief administrative officer, addressed the Butte County Board of Supervisors during its meeting on Tuesday (March 10).

“I don’t think I have to tell the board how things are going,” he said, “because I think we’ve all heard loud and clear from constituents who are unhappy.”

In June, the supervisors voted unanimously to adopt franchise agreements with three trash haulers—Recology, Waste Management and Northern Recycling and Waste Services. The agreements divided the county into operating zones for each company as a way to ease wear and tear on roads, reduce vehicle emissions and increase revenues by directing most trash, recyclables and green waste to the county-operated Neal Road Recycling and Waste facility.

The transition, which affects more than

21,000 county residents, has been a mess so far. Customers have reported issues with all three haulers, including missed pick-up days, an unexpected reduction of recycling and yard-waste services from once a week to every other week, and haulers no longer serving customers who live on private roads.

There were also numerous complaints specific to Waste Management, such as failure to alert customers of the pending changes, adding unexplained charges to bills and frustrating and unhelpful interactions with the company’s national call center based in Phoenix.

Take Lesley Beadle, who lives off Dayton Road, just outside of Chico city limits. She and her husband, Roger, have been satisfactorily served by Waste Management for the past nine years. But the company didn’t provide advanced notice about the reduction of their recycling service, or that their rate for trash pickup would go from $35 to $54. And calling the company was futile.

“No one at Waste Management could tell me what the new bills were going to be,” Beadle said. “I told them I’d like to have a supervisor call me, or someone who has knowledge of this situation. No one from Waste Management has called me back.”

said the county is working with all three haulers to iron out the wrinkles moving forward. Some issues, like missed pick-up days, were anticipated early on but should become less frequent over time, he said.

Others require a more involved fix. For instance, Hahn said that any customers of Waste Management who received bills including a fuel surcharge or an administrative fee were, in fact, charged erroneously and are entitled to a new bill or a credit toward their next one. As such, Waste Management has set up a local number (see column note) to ensure those customers don’t get endlessly redirected by its national call center.

Additionally, the recycling zone adjacent to Chico—where the Beadles live—will return to weekly recycling and yard-waste services on Monday (March 16). “We didn’t think the change would cause such an outcry,” Hahn said. “But we have listened.”

The changeover also caused some residents living in unincorporated areas like Berry Creek and Butte Creek Canyon to lose recycling services entirely. But Hahn said “all three haulers have stepped up” and agreed to offer every-other-week pickup in areas that were served prior to the transition.

Offering hauling services to residents on private roads is trickier. Under county code, those services must be provided along county-maintained roads, but not on private roads, and haulers are concerned with the liability associated with their heavy vehicles causing damage to roadways. The haulers have agreed to assess private roads upon request to make sure they’re safe. If they are, the customers will be asked to sign a waiver of liability, and services will resume. If they aren’t, customers will be asked to bring their trash out to a county-maintained road.

While some of these concerns are limited to rural areas, the county’s struggles with the new trash-hauling system are relevant to the city of Chico, as well. Back in December 2013, the Chico City Council voted to hire an outside consultant to explore entering a similar franchise agreement.

“Hopefully, as the city goes through the franchise agreement,” Hahn said, “they can learn from our mistakes.”

The results of a poll taken last month indicate a shift, with 91 percent of Republicans and 68 percent of Democrats deeming the threat critical.

Porn preacher popped Ex-Chico pornographer charged with sex crimes involving minors onny Pauling made a name for Ddecade himself in Chico more than a ago by producing pornog-

raphy. Then he abruptly left the industry, claiming he’d found God. In the past three months, however, he’s been charged with 13 felonies and one misdemeanor of sexual abuse involving underage girls in Shasta and Sutter counties. And the investigation isn’t even close to being over.

Pauling’s story is nothing if not unique. The son of a pastor, he rebelled against his father and the church at a young age. In his mid20s, he bought a video camera and set up a porn studio in downtown Chico (above where Beach Hut Deli now sits). He made a lot of money, and it was relatively easy.

In an interview with the CN&R in 2007, he said, “The society we live in glamorizes porn. A lot of kids grow up thinking it’s cool to be in porn. So it wasn’t tough for me [to find models].”

After about seven years of running his own website, as well as supplying content for others under the pseudonym Donovan Philips, Pauling had an epiphany. To be fair, a few events led up to it. First, his fiancée left him. Then he started taking to heart phone calls and emails from women he’d photographed, pleading for him to take their photos off the Internet.

One threatened suicide if he didn’t; several told him of ruined relationships with their families because of him.

After leaving the porn industry in 2006, Donny Pauling turned his energy to preaching about the damage it causes.

“There are girls all over Chico who have been hurt,” he said back in 2007. At the time, he estimated he’d photographed at least 500 Chico State students—and even some faculty members—during his producer days.

So he joined the seminary and turned his attention to anti-porn activism by way of XXXChurch, which sent him around the country to panel discussions and as a motivational speaker about the ills of pornography. He started a website, donnypauling.net, where he keeps his blog. The last entry is from late 2014.

That’s around the time one of his alleged victims came forward.

The 16-year-old girl, a relative who had been living with Pauling for several years, told Sutter County sheriff’s deputies that the two had had a sexual relationship for three years, according to Anu Chopra, senior deputy district attorney in Sutter County.

“He was the caretaker of the child—they lived together in Shasta County, then moved to Yuba City,” Chopra explained. During that time, she said, Pauling and the girl allegedly had a sexual relationship.

She also alleged that he photographed the girl with other young girls in various poses.

Eventually the girl told her mother, and that’s when the authorities got involved. In that case, the 41-year-old Pauling has been charged with five felonies. The first three, all in Shasta County but

handled out of the Sutter County DA’s office, include performing lewd or lascivious acts on a child under 13 as well as on a child 14 or 15 years old, and oral copulation with a child under 14. The final two, in Sutter County, include performing lewd or lascivious acts on a child 14 or 15 years old and sexual intercourse with a minor.

The second case, for which Pauling faces arraignment Friday (March 13), involves a different girl. That case charges Pauling with one misdemeanor and eight felonies, including several instances of sexual intercourse as well as oral copulation and penetration with a foreign object on a minor.

Chopra couldn’t elaborate on that case because it has not yet gone to preliminary hearing, but news coverage in the area indicates it involves Sutter County sheriff’s Capt. Lewis F. McElfresh Jr. Pauling told CBS 13 in Sacramento that McElfresh, a friend, invited him over to have sex with his 16-year-old relative. Chopra did confirm that McElfresh, who is also in custody and charged with multiple felony sex crimes, was related to this case.

Chopra said she will be filing a third case against Pauling in the coming weeks and that the investigation is ongoing. She could not confirm rumors about potential victims in Butte County at this time.

A critical pitch Teachers show solidarity as possible strike looms -E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it “R means to me ...” rang a familiar refrain through loudspeakers set

up outside of the Chico Holiday Inn Monday (March 9) afternoon.

Aretha Franklin’s plea for fair treatment served as a metaphor for the demands of hundreds of educators assembled outside the building where school district officials and teacher union reps met to discuss contract negotiations.

The threat of a strike—which would be the first in the district’s history—has loomed since talks about wage increases, benefits, internal management and other issues between the Chico Unified Teachers Association and the Chico Unified School District went south late last year (see “At an impasse,” Newslines, Feb. 26). A fact-finding hearing held at the hotel Monday prompted the teachers’ show of solidarity.

During the fact-finding process, a panel of three—one member from each side and a neutral person agreed on by each faction—meet to discuss the issues and see if an agreement can be reached. After the panel presents a report, the district can make its final offer, and the union can strike if its members vote to do so.

More than 500 teachers and their supporters met in the parking lot of Kmart on Pillsbury Road after school ended and then marched down Cohasset Road to a

grassy piece of land in the Denny’s parking lot, next door to the hotel, for a brief rally and press conference. Many carried signs, with one frequent motto reading, “We’d rather be teaching.”

“Our goal is to get a settlement, not to have to strike,” Joe Asnault, a Chico High English teacher who serves as the union’s vice president, told the assembled teachers from the bed of a pickup truck, “but what the district is doing is arranging for a strike.”

Negotiations were in the works through 2014, before hitting a wall last October. In December, the teachers voted to give union leadership the right to call a strike if negotiations do not work. The union believes the school district is determined to force a strike. During CUSD’s Feb. 25 board meeting, its five-member panel voted to hire an outside labor consultant and approved a dozen resolutions outlining how to respond if teachers walk out.

According to a March 6 press release, the union is further convinced the district wants teachers to strike because advertisements offering substitutes as much as $280 daily (several times the standard $78 paid under normal circumstances) have recently appeared on Craigslist, education employment site Edjoin, and other websites. Paying scab wages would cost the district more than

$185,000 per day, the press release says, and Asnault warned the damage would be more than financial.

“The district keeps saying if we walk out there’s going to be some kind of quality education happening, as they’ve stated over and over again in emails and press releases,” Asnault told the crowd. “I don’t see how they can [promise quality education] because you’re not going to be there. They can’t do it, but what they can do is negotiate a fair settlement.

“I’m sad we have to be out here to do this, but the hope is when [the meeting] is done tonight we’re going to have a settlement and we won’t have to do this anymore,” he said.

BURNING MONEY

Smoking cigarettes may become an even more expensive habit in California as a new bill introduced by state Sen. Richard Pan (D-Sacramento) would add a $2 tax to each pack sold in the state.

Currently, the state tax on a pack of cigarettes is 87 cents—a tax rate that 32 states exceed—and the federal tax is $1.01, according to California Healthline. Senate Bill 591 is primarily designed to discourage smoking, but it would also raise an estimated $1.4 billion annually to fund expanded smoking-cessation services for Medi-Cal beneficiaries, research on smokingrelated diseases and smoking-prevention efforts.

If the measure isn’t approved by the Legislature, supporters say they’ll bring it before California’s voters on the November 2016 ballot. In that case, it would require a two-thirds vote and Gov. Jerry Brown’s signature to become law.

Though most people likely feel flu-like symptoms more often, adults catch a true flu virus about once every five years, a field study in China finds.

For the study, recently published in the journal PLoS Biology, an international team tested blood samples from 151 volunteers ages 7 to 81 to monitor how often they were infected with nine main strains of flu known to be circulating the globe between 1968 and 2009, according to BBC News. The research team discovered that, while children got the flu about once every other year, the infections became less frequent with age. Once someone was more than 30 years old, they contracted the flu about twice a decade.

The researchers noted that the findings may not apply to all populations, as the “exact frequency of infection will vary depending on background levels of flu and vaccination.”

MOST MILK DRUG-FREE

There’s little evidence of antibiotics in milk, a recently released Food and Drug Administration study on nearly 2,000 dairy farms concludes.

In recent years, concerns from public health groups have mounted regarding the levels of animal antibiotics that make it into food, as consuming those drugs could have unintended consequences for humans. For instance, repeated exposure to antibiotics can make germs resistant to the drugs, making them less effective when someone gets sick.

Health advocates had expressed specific concerns about milk coming from dairy farms that had tried to sell older cows for slaughter that had illegal levels of antibiotics in their systems, according to The Associated Press. In response, starting in 2012 the FDA focused on farms with previous violations, along with a control group, testing samples of raw milk for 31 drugs.

The results, released on March 5 after two years of analyzing the samples, showed that less than 1 percent contained illegal drug residue.

Chicoans weigh in on Michelle Obama’s claim that U.S. food culture has shifted by

hat Barack Obama is to health care W reform, Michelle Obama is to healthy living. During the time that the president

has pushed for—and fought to preserve— Obamacare, the health insurance act that’s become synonymous with his name, his wife has become just as public a champion for nutrition and activity, particularly among children.

At an annual health conference held Feb. 26 in Washington, D.C., the first lady extolled the “culture change” the country has experienced over the past five years since she began spotlighting childhood obesity. As reported by The Associated Press, she referred to the progress as “incredibly fragile,” due to the risk of complacency and the opposition of special interests, but called healthier choices “the new norm.”

But is it our new norm in the North State? Has the local food culture shifted in ways that match this supposed national trend?

The CN&R posed that question to people with deep knowledge of the area’s food system. The answer is yes, albeit with a few asterisks: Not everyone has jumped on the bandwagon at the same time, with some already on board before it started rolling; anecdotal successes and statistical evidence don’t always correspond; and people can’t—or don’t—always get what they want.

Shelly Blanshei has been part of Chico’s food scene for 19 years, starting

when she and husband Lance opened Bidwell Perk. In 2004 they launched Teaz Me—now T. Tea Bar & Fusion Café— where they serve a variety of teas and meals from two locations in Chico.

Locally, she says, “there’s definitely a shift in the food culture. People are much more aware of health and nutrition; what they put in their body is important.

“One of the shifts I’ve seen is we have more men coming into the store and eating our food than when we first opened, and we also have a lot of young men drinking tea,” she added. “What I see is that trend of the younger male … and college-age kids really enjoying the healthy part of what we offer.”

And when Blanshei interviews prospective employees—mostly young adults— and asks why they want to work at T Bar, “‘healthy’ is always the first thing that comes out of their mouth.”

Maria Venturino, a Chico restaurateur since 1997, has sensed change as well. She and her husband, Craig Thomas, previously catered to the tastes of fine-dining clien-

tele at the Red Tavern. Now they co-own Farm Star Pizza, while Thomas also serves as executive chef at Enloe Medical Center.

Venturino sees the recent changes happening more at the institutional level—that is, hospitals and schools—than in smaller kitchens, because farm-to-table isn’t anything new for Chicoans with deep roots.

“Many people will actually laugh at this modern trend,” she said, “because grandma or great-grandmother was putting out apricots and corn and zucchini and all sorts of things as long as they can remember.

“It’s in our blood in Chico, and it just so happens that the new administration has adopted these guidelines for health reasons. Yes, it’s a good thing, and the institutions in Chico are paying attention … and are stepping it up when it comes to fresh farm-to-table food.”

Blanshei points out that Chico long has been a hotbed for health aficionados, including paleo diet pioneer Robb Wolf, whose “eat real foods” paradigm would be impossible in a locale without farmers’ markets and grocers such as Chico Natural Foods and S&S Organic Produce and Natural Foods.

“It starts with the national movement—people are more aware of things—and then I think Chico has a lot of that to offer in those places,” Blanshei said. “Definitely a lot of people in Chico are health-conscious because they’re just that way … but definitely a lot of people are on the bandwagon because of what’s happening in the news and the help of Michelle Obama.”

Eatery-wise, Venturino sees a handful of restaurants in Chico trying to implement Buy Fresh Buy Local, though customers aren’t always willing to spend more money for that.

“Everybody wants to,” she said.

“It’s just a matter of whether they can afford to—and that’s sad.” Ω

“Americans want to be healthy and want to feed their children healthy foods,” Bianco said. “But the fact is 75 percent of adults— 75 percent—in the United States are overweight, obese or morbidly obese. To say that we’re making progress is a little deceptive.”

Bianco’s statistic comes from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“The food culture in general lacks an awareness of food,” she continued. “There’s kind of a distorted or manipulated awareness that exists right now.”

For instance, marketing may mislead consumers. Packaging can have a label “making claims such as ‘all natural’ or ‘100 percent natural’ or ‘100 percent real fruit’— even the word ‘organic,’” Bianco said. Yet, if the food inside is a product of processing, “it’s an illusion for consumers that they’re eating healthy.”

Also assistant director at Chico State’s Center for Healthy Communities, Bianco acknowledges that demand for natural and organic food has increased, but says the driving forces behind food purchases remain taste, price and convenience.

A true seismic shift will occur as a result of educational institutions responding appropriately to policy change, she argues. For instance, the nutritional standards for school lunches are now higher, but districts’ spending must increase to replace cheaper processed items with fresh whole foods.

Ooftensure—it’s a well-intentioned mantra that crosses folks’ minds as they donate ne man’s trash is another man’s trea-

(rather than toss out) last season’s shoes or that shirt that doesn’t quite fit. Since the mid-20th century, thrift institutions have been a popular charitable way of selling and recycling used home goods and textiles. But just because you donated your once-favorite band T-shirt to Goodwill doesn’t mean you’ll see someone else sporting it around town. In fact, there’s a good chance it won’t even make it onto the local thrift shelf to be sold; according to the Secondhand Materials and Recycled Textile Association, the volume of donations to thrifts is so great that there’s room for only roughly 20 percent on store shelves.

Stepping in to handle those excess goods and keep inventory manageable are organizations like Chico’s DBS Thrift Connection.

As a broker for thrift institutions, DBS is responsible for determining prices for used goods, buying those excess donations from thrift shops and institutions, and then selling them to graders and exporters, who market the items internationally. That band shirt might end up on the back of someone living as far away as Malaysia, says Julie Treanor, DBS president.

“There’s a whole pipeline involved in funneling these goods somewhere,” she said of the global market. “We’re literally dealing with countries all over the world, so we need to know our market. People in Central and South American countries tend to want high-end brand-name goods, whereas African countries want lightweight, breathable clothing.”

But, as Treanor explains, determining the pricing isn’t always so easy. “You have a price index on coffee and other commodities, but there isn’t one for clothing. And we’re not buying per item, we’re buying per pound of clothing. There are a lot of factors involved, but you have to let the market dictate price.”

at Chico State before pursuing occupational therapy at San Jose State, she took over the family business in 2006 when her father, Dennis B. Schubert—the company’s namesake—became ill.

“My dad left me this business and his golf clubs. I figured, ‘I’m going to take up golf, and do the best I can with this business.’” Today, she and husband Zack Treanor co-own DBS, employing nine workers at their Humboldt Avenue office, many of them graduates of Chico State’s business school.

For Treanor, minimizing the impact on landfills is one of the main job perks.

“There are billions of pounds of clothing being exported out of the country every year, and knowing that it’s not all ending up in the garbage is a really comforting thought,” she said. For Chico-area clothing and goods, that exporting process begins at the warehouse facility portion of the George Walker Salvation Army Rehabilitation Center, where Chico thrift stores’ excess inventory ends up. For their part, DBS is responsible for exporting between 14-20 truckloads of post-consumer goods a week, which are first distributed to domestic hubs in Los Angeles, Oakland and Houston. With each truck holding 40,000 pounds, that’s between 560,000 to 800,000

pounds being exported each week—all of which is destined for a new home or new use rather than the landfill.

In efforts to decrease the environmental

toll textiles take on landfills, other parts of the clothing chain have been experimenting with sustainable alternatives in recent years.

Manufactures are increasingly turning to organic cotton and hemp, with major chains like H&M and Patagonia boasting their green apparel offerings.

According to a report by the Textile Exchange, the organic cotton world market

was worth over $5 billion in 2011. But once it ends up in the garbage, it’s trash like anything else, and the harsh reality remains; in the U.S. alone, 12.4 million tons of clothes go to the landfill every year, according to Treanor. For that, it’s the supply chain, not just the retail market, that influences the sustainability of textile goods.

For the discarded clothing that does get donated, 50 percent is reused as secondhand wear and the bulk of the rest is turned into industrial cloth or transformed into fiber for insulation products, leaving only about 5 percent that’s nonrecyclable.

While those might be good stats, it’s not viable unless consumers give those clothes a chance at a second life.

“People aren’t always aware of what’s happening to all that excess clothing,” said Treanor, who stresses the importance of raising awareness of the secondary consumer goods recycling industry. “We have to ask ourselves, ‘How can we become better consumers of clothing?’”

The practice of donating and reusing clothing is as important as ever, Treanor stressed. “We find that, on average, people tend to purge their closets every five years.

The better the domestic economy is, the more likely people are able to buy new clothes and donate their used goods. But our domestic economy has been in the toilet for a long time.”

For DBS, spreading the wealth on a global level is a huge part of the answer, and one that affects the planet just as it does its inhabitants.

“When our clothes get exported, they’re put into 100 pound bales. When you look at the history of the bale, it’s literally what people in Africa could carry on their backs to their village. So you can imagine some of these clothes going to the most remote places.” And whether that bale ends up in a village in Africa, or a high-end used clothing market in Mexico, either alternative is better than the trash, she says. □

Living the dream Deb Tastet is living her dream, but life wasn’t always easy for this 52-year-old single mother. She’s recovered from drug addiction, escaped a bad marriage and found safety and solace in the community of Magalia. A year ago, after working minimum-wage jobs, she was able to open her own coffee shop, Da Coffee Pot, where she passes on help to the dispossessed, encourages political discussion, and offers local coffee, homemade food and live music. Sitting around the shop, it’s evident that the employees and patrons are more like a loving, close–knit family than anything else. What makes your coffee shop different from others?

First, we often give three to four meals a day to any needy customers, since we’re all God’s children. We have a free lend/borrow library, plus we promote alternative political viewpoints, such as the State of Jefferson movement.

Vietnam veterans meet here every Saturday, and every other Saturday is story time with Bekah [Holden-Hector] dressing up as a mermaid in a pink wig. We also help neighbors get through family emergencies. We call it “Magalia magic.” If someone dies, we’ll even put flowers on their grave.

You had quite a struggle to get to this point. How did you turn your life around?

Then, four years ago I was down and out with an imploded marriage, so I moved from Nevada to Magalia. I thought I would just be filling coffee cups, but my boyfriend got ideas out of my brain and made them happen.

Tell me about your menu.

We have many coffee varieties purchased locally, mostly from Has Beans in Chico. Our food and pastries, such as stuffed doughnut holes, muffins, sandwiches and smoothies are made from scratch by our “ninja baker,” Jan Murell.

Many of them are vegan and gluten–free. They change depending on Jan’s fancy, or the delicious ideas I give her from Facebook.

You seem to feel for those in need.

Yes, I made a deal with God: Magalia kept me safe, so the least I could do was keep things warm

and safe for others. We donate things like toys and socks locally.

Socks are a big need here in Magalia. We also give fruits and vegetables to the needy, and I’m starting a community garden on the halfacre I own.

I hear live music in the other room.

Yes, at any given time one or more people will sing or play instruments. We also have an incredible house band, Street Legal, that rocks out on Saturday nights. A couple of them have played in major rock bands like Journey and Jefferson Starship.

How do you feel about your venture overall?

I love it. This shop is all I have since all my family has passed away. I wanted to offer an alternative to barrooms and casinos. On top of all I’ve helped create, we’re opening up Magalia’s first drive–through this week. I made this shop so I didn’t have to fight anyone to get money for my child, and now she knows what bootstraps are.

It’s kind of funny to me that I write a column about all things made and grown locally and I can’t grow squat. Actually, it’s more sad than funny.

The few attempts I’ve made at buying—and keeping alive—houseplants and flowers have failed miserably. Ditto on a little herb garden. I even once killed a cactus (how do you do that?!).

But I do love the idea of having a garden, especially one that provides not only beauty but also food. And I do envy people with green thumbs, so I’ve been thinking about giving it another try. Maybe with some help I can make it work.

So in a step in that direction, I made a visit to Magnolia Gift & Garden, the inviting little nursery off East Avenue near Safeway. To be fair, it’s not really that little. Upon entering the grounds, you see the property does expand to the rear. I’ve always been curious about the fun garden sculptures visible from the road, so it was nice to finally stop in and see them up close.

I was immediately greeted by employee Sammy Brown, a delightful young woman, who happily indulged my naïve questions about starting a garden despite my decidedly brown thumb.

“The first thing to do with a home garden is make sure you’ve got good soil,” she said. That means amending the soil with compost—something I’ve never done but I’m confident there’s a good tutorial on YouTube to get me through it. She also recommended a raised bed, so that should make the soil issue a bit easier.

“The second thing is to start with a healthy plant,” she added. In other words, pick varieties that do well in our climate, don’t buy plants that already have yellowing leaves and buying organic ensures no pesticides have been used.

Brown said she likes to incorporate flowering plants into her vegetable garden because they attract pollinating insects. I especially liked her idea of growing sunflowers—they’re so vibrant!

For my final question, I asked her, “If I were to start a vegetable garden with five plants, which ones would you recommend?” Her top five: cherry tomato, cucumber, zucchini, hot peppers (because bell peppers tend to burn here) and pumpkin. “Starting from seed can be really fun,” she added. Cucumber, zucchini and pumpkin plants can all start from seed, but she recommends getting already established tomato and pepper plants “because they take so long to get started.”

I’m not sure yet if I’m brave enough to start such a large project, but I have time. Brown said the timing still isn’t quite right for planting a summer garden—“Give it two or three more weeks,” she advised. (That would probably be just enough time to get the soil ready.) Maybe I’ll try just one plant and see how I fare. I’d love to hear reader suggestions on what grows well for them, especially if they’re terrible plant parents like I am.

hico is an arts town. The city and surrounding communities, too, are flush with artisans of myriad talents. We celebrate their works with annual celebrations and special events, such as Artoberfest and the Open Studios Tour. And we brag about this creative class when touting the things that make this community special.

Here at the CN&R, we regularly highlight the work of local creative types in our Arts & Culture section. This week, we’re focusing in on some local visual artists. CN&R photography intern Brittany Waterstradt recently met with more than a dozen local art-makers, taking their portraits and talking with them about their creative process. We’ve curated the best of the work here for this photo essay.

Idea Fabrication Labs co-founder and artist Erin Banwell inspects his work on a computer-controlled cutting machine at the high-tech maker space’s Orange Street location. “I usually like to aim for some kind of technical feat or solve some kind of technical problem and then have art be created out of that process,” he says. “Mostly when I create art it’s process-based, so I’m creating processes and adjusting some aspect of it and finding where there’s something interesting and focusing on that and seeing it through.” Banwell’s other work includes a large 3-D printed sculpture based on his friend’s hands.

“I find going out into nature is not only mentally and physically calming, but also a huge inspirational force,” Hungate says. “Over the years, I’ve learned to wrangle my ideas in and mentally organize them before starting on a drawing. Once I commit to an idea, I try to keep my process simple.

I believe in balancing basic direction and a clear vision with focused spontaneity.”

Longtime Chico ceramicist Jacob Troester, pictured working on a vase, says he most enjoys creating functional pieces. “To really find what looks and feels right, I use what I make daily,” he says. “Maybe there’s a plate that’s the ideal size for an American breakfast, and it’s got perfectly sloped walls that I can scoop my food against. I’ve fallen in love with this plate and seek it out every time. You form a special relationship with dishware and I love to give my work to people so that they might form that connection. Making things and sending them out into other people’s personal space gives me a small but important sense of purpose.”

Chico mosaic artist Robin Indar, of Indar Mosaics, has been commissioned in and out of town for pieces big and small, including the Jackson Pollock art bench downtown and the serpent at Caper Acres.

“I get my inspiration from a lot of different things. For instance, I’m going to be doing some art at the Chico [State] bridge that was destroyed by a tree. My first thing was to walk the grounds where the bridge is, and look at what’s around there and what it feels like. I saw a squirrel, I saw a butterfly, and so those were immediately potential design elements,” Indar says.

I like a lot of science and botany books and floral books. I’m open to anything, as long as it was printed before 1978.”

The first time they set up at the L train station at Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, Moon Hooch was fortunate to catch a huge crowd of refugees from a rained-out Modest Mouse show. Their guerrilla-style appearances (some of which can be found on YouTube) continued to draw such crowds that the NYPD banned them from that station, though they continue to play at others.

At another subway show, they caught the ear of Soul Coughing frontman Mike Doughty: “He came up and straight-up asked us if we wanted to come on a national tour with him,” McGowen said. “We really owe him for kick-starting our career.”

“It gave us a perspective on what we would be doing, and we started integrating electronics to make better use of the larger sound systems at the venues we started playing,” he said, referring to the birth of a system of playing along with pre-recorded sounds he likened to “reverse DJing.” “A DJ plays recorded music and adds live effects, and we’re playing live music as the computer provides live effects. We have a pretty unique system with the computer and it gives us the best of the two worlds—the precision of the DJ and the flexibility to play our music however we want.”

“We have a click track in our ear monitors, and are constantly getting clicks to our ears so we synchronize with the computer,” Wenzl added, noting the sound, and the machine’s integral role in the band, makes him sometimes imagine Moon Hooch’s “fourth member” as “an old wise man playing a clave or beating on a wood block.” “We have to respect the timing the computer is on, but within that timing we have complete freedom.”

Wenzl said the band’s integration of organic instrumentation and technology is in line with the members’ personal views on sustainability, a cause they’ve used their greater visibility to champion.

“We’re creating a collaborative system with software where our expression and our soul is dealing with interacting with a larger electronic system, and not in a way that oppresses our humanity, but it’s symbiotic,” he said. “There’s a type of inter-dependence; it all needs to work together.”

Whatever the venue, Wenzl said the band members still value, and apply, the lessons they learned before Moon Hooch surfaced.

“It definitely taught us a lot about engaging people, because people are walking by to ride the train, not listen to music,” he said. “We found out what works and what didn’t.”

Wenzl willingly shared the secret that eludes so many musicians: “Contrast captures people’s attention,” he said, using the analogy of reading a book, and noticing the sound of a refrigerator running after it stops. “We’ll play something complex and loud and then drop down to something simpler and softer, and that change is what draws people in.” Ω

The owners—sisters Abigail, Angelina and Autumn Rasmussen—have been scrambling in a shared kitchen space in south Chico to keep up with demand. Each week they’ve sold out of increasingly large volumes of juice; most recently, they sold 60 gallons in about five hours.

Live Life offers three regular flavors and two weekly specials in 16- and 32-ounce glass bottles for $6 and $12 (you get a 50 cent refund for each rinsed bottle you return). Most of the juices are characterized by a balance of fruits and vegetables that doesn’t taste overly sweet, such as standby Turn the Beet Around, which contains beets, apples, lemons, ginger, beet greens and purple kale. Another, called Liquid Gold, is made up of carrots, oranges, pineapples and turmeric. But they’ll occasionally offer a sweeter treat like the Sweet Sip, which is mostly citrus fruit with a hint of ginger.

The sisters Rasmussen have worked together in a variety of restaurant settings and have always known they’d start a business together in the food and beverage industry. What exactly they’d sell wasn’t clear until about a year ago, when Angelina set her sites on cold-pressed juice. She’d tried some at a juice bar in Hawaii and then researched more about the process.

“Cold-pressed juice is what’s happening now,” she explained. “Just the convenience of it—people walk up and they don’t have to wait for us to juice it, we just pour it. And it’s not dead, it’s not pasteurized, it’s still raw and vibrant, and you don’t have to drink it that day.”

Indeed, how to deliver raw juice to the masses was a bit of a problem before juice bars started coldpressing on a commercial scale. Unpasteurized juices have a shorter shelf life and are more susceptible to contamination from harmful microorganisms, while the pasteurization process—heating the liquid until it kills the bacteria that cause it to spoil—may also decrease the presence of beneficial minerals, vitamins and enzymes.

And so juice bars in metropolitan areas across the country (even at chains like Jamba Juice) are now using the cold-pressing process, which applies great pressure, rather than heat, to the fruit and vegetable pulp. The result is a product with a longer shelf life that doesn’t sacrifice the good stuff. Abigail says Live Life juice will keep for about a week if it’s sealed and refrigerated.

Live Life opened last June at the seasonal farmers’ market at North Valley Plaza, and the sisters quickly built a customer base, even though they were still in the early stages of experimentation.

“We’ve learned so much even since opening at the Saturday market,” Angelina said. “It’s mostly been trial-and-error, and we’re still refining the process, still refining how much we can make in a certain time.”

Their ultimate goal is to move into a brick-andmortar space, preferably somewhere near downtown Chico. As soon as the right place is available, the sisters will quit their jobs and pursue the juicing business full time.

In the meantime, they’ll cherish the social aspect of working at the market and interacting with their repeat customers each week.

“For me, that was one of the biggest driving forces for starting this business,” Angelina said. “I love Chico and I want to be a part of it, contributing something that enriches this community.” Ω

And to think that, before the Review: season ends on Nov. 1, the company Oregon Shakespeare will mount seven additional plays, Festival, 2015 opening weekend, including another world premiere.

(Angus Bowmer Theatre through Nov. 1): This is a lively and accessible production of one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies. Using a minimalist but effective set, director Lileana Blain-Cruz and her crew deftly explore the “merry war” of the sexes as manifested in the witty love-hate badinage between Beatrice (Christiana Clark) and Benedick (Danforth Comins).

At the same time the play flirts with tragedy when the naïve Claudio (Carlo Albán) foolishly allows unfounded jealousy to wreck his wedding to the compliant Hero (Leah Anderson). Throw in some very funny comedic scenes, and you’ve got a delightful production.

Pericles (Thomas Theatre through Nov. 1): The Thomas is OSF’s new “black box” theater, and it’s a technological marvel—something that’s immediately evident in this dazzling production directed by Joseph Haj. Pericles, Prince of Tyre (Wayne T. Carr) journeys to Antioch to win a beautiful princess as his bride.

First, though, he must solve a riddle posed by her father, King Antiochus (Scott Ripley)—that, or die. He solves the riddle, only to have it reveal that the king is sleeping with his daughter. Pericles flees but cannot return to Tyre, so must wander among the Greek isles for many years, pursued by Antiochus’ assassin.

He saves the city of Tarsus from famine, wins Princess Thaisa (Brooke Parks) in a jousting

tournament, marries her, and becomes the father of a baby girl but then apparently loses his wife in childbirth during a terrible storm at sea.

That’s just the first half. Many adventures follow.

Pirates play a role leading to an ending that had a number of people in the audience tearful. If you’ve never seen Shakespeare’s Pericles, don’t miss this one.

Guys and Dolls (Bowmer through Nov. 1): In the eternal war between sin and redemption, who’s the winner? That’s the question this classic Broadway musical asks, as it pits the gamblers and hustlers of Times Square against the righteous soldiers of the Save-a-Soul Mission.

Based on the stories and characters of Damon Runyon, the play (directed by Mary Zimmerman) is about the effort of a small-time racketeer named Nathan Detroit (Rodney Gardiner) to raise a thousand bucks to rent a site for “the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York.” He bets his fellow gambler Sky Masterson (Jeremy Peter Johnson) a thousand dollars that he can’t convince Save-a-Soul’s Sgt. Sarah Brown (Kate Hurster) to accompany him to Havana.

This sets in motion a cascading series of events that, in turn, seamlessly become the settings for more than 20 song-and-dance numbers that are so elaborate and beautifully done that the audience roared with approval. Some of the songs—“A Bushel and a Peck,” “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” “Luck Be a Lady”—are familiar classics, but all are terrific.

Highly recommended.

Fingersmith (Bowmer through July 9): Written

by Alexa Junge based on Sarah Waters’ 2002 novel and directed by OSF Artistic Director Bill Rauch, this mystery tale is set in two distinct worlds of the mid-19th century, the squalid London apartment of a family of fingersmiths, or pickpockets, and the country mansion of a rich industrialist. At its heart are two young women, Sue Trinder (Sara Bruner) and Maud Lilly (Erica Sullivan), who resemble each other and whose paths cross in the most remarkable—and sometimes shocking—ways.

This is a story with many twists and turns, but as it progresses, it illuminates the worlds of ladies and gentlemen, servants and thieves in ways that suggest they’re more alike than different, and that love is the only force that can cross the class divide. □

Brothers of the Sonic Cloth Brothers of the Sonic Cloth Neurot Recordings Tad Doyle hinted at his project Brothers of the Sonic Cloth with a two-song demo and a track on a split 10-inch waaaay back in 2009 before finally releasing this self-titled LP. In musical terms, it’s an eternity. Of course, that’s nothing compared to the 14-year gap that preceded Doyle’s most notable musical contribution, the heavy grungers TAD, who wore out their welcome back in 1995. Brothers of the Sonic Cloth makes up for lost time in a big way. Big. Remnants from TAD are stuck to the Brothers’ (and sister, bassist Peggy Doyle) sonic sludge, but this thing is an entirely different beast. Opener “Lava” is pure metal fury, with riffs chugging and heaving under Doyle’s lumberjack bellow. BotSC aren’t necessarily breaking new ground, as much as they are keeping one foot firmly planted on the permasoaked ground of Pacific Northwest rock. There’s a glacial chill that runs through the record’s taut seven songs. The eight-minute “Unnamed” serves as the centerpiece and mission statement—pinned to the table with a bloody dagger—as an eerie opening acoustic chimes in the distance before being consumed by waves of molten metal. Brothers of the Sonic Cloth is unrelenting, and probably the heaviest thing Doyle has done. It’s heavier than most other things as well.

A bit pricey for a novelty item ($39.95 to $44.95 for version 2.0), but perhaps an ideal gift for the toy-loving person who has everything— including an instinctual urge to kill tiny creepy crawling and buzzing interlopers. Style-wise, the gun is a looker. It comes in bright yellow or military camo, both with bright-orange accented trigger, safety latch and muzzle, and it’s dotted with fly silhouettes across decorative side panels. The clear-plastic salt reservoir holds a heaping tablespoon (which is about 50 shots’ worth) of ammunition, so the amount of salt dispensed for each shot is fairly small and easily wiped up along with the carcass of your vanquished pest. The salt is ejected in a shotgun pattern, and I have taken down a full-grown housefly, a creepy brown spider and a stink bug, all from 2 to 3 feet away. An added bonus to the thrill of the hunt is that the small size of the salt grains cleanly kills the prey without the messy splatter associated with common fly-swatters.

Medicine Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors Magnolia For the last decade, Drew Holcomb has been slowly but steadily spreading his upbeat Southern-rock sound and positive outlook, and with Medicine, the singer-songwriter and the latest incarnation of his revolving band might finally be poised to break out. You have picturesque folk numbers lamenting love lost (“American Beauty”), a mid-tempo love song to Holcomb’s wife/bandmate, Ellie (“Avalanche”), and songs that are dying to be played on your next road trip or a movie featuring a road trip (the rousing, almost anthemic “Shine Like Lightning”). But this album isn’t an unfocused collection of various forms of radio bait; the thread of relationships nicely ties the different styles together. Whenever Ellie adds her excellent vocal harmonies to a tune, the lyrics—as on the chorus of rocker “Tightrope” (“Wanna go wherever you go”)—are not only made stronger because of the union of their voices, but because of their union in real life. And when the band takes things to another level, as they do on the funky stomp-rocker “Sisters Brothers”—on which groovy electric guitar and cacophonous drum beats give the track the feeling of a rallying cry—this album soars. Some good medicine for your soul.

The longest weekend A quietly heroic working-class adventure arion Cotillard’s Oscar-nominated performance M in the role of a working mother fighting to save her job is a major attraction in Two Days, One Night.

But this quietly urgent French-language film, set in Belgium, is no mere star vehicle.

Sandra Bya, the beleaguered working mom played by Cotillard, is the central by Juan-Carlos force in a social drama that is both low key and surprisingly wide-ranging. Her Selznick dogged efforts, over the course of a single weekend, to stay employed supply the basic narrative momentum. But the variety of characters and situations she encounters in the process make the film into a sensitive and unexpectedly moving cross-section of working-class life.

ed, and her determination to do something about it is mildly surprising at first, and increasingly to her credit as the ebb and flow of her struggles intensifies. But Two Days, One Night is also about the diverse dilemmas and predicaments of her coworkers, most of whom are sympathetic to her, to one degree or another, and nearly all of whom are hemmed in by social and economic pressures similar to those that beset Sandra and her family.

One co-worker needs the bonus for his child’s tuition. Another bursts into tears when Sandra asks him to change his vote. Another reverses the vote her bullying husband had insisted on. The cumulative effect of Sandra’s doggedly diligent encounters is a kind of group portrait of families struggling to make ends meet even when both spouses have what appear to be full-time jobs.

Sandra’s weekend of grassroots/job-related lobbying has the makings of a discouraging slog, both for her and for audiences. But in the hands of the Franco-Belgian filmmaking brothers of Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, the quasi-pedestrian drama of Two Days, One Night comes forth as a curiously suspenseful, modestly heroic adventure. films is mostly affectionate and inconsequential, the parts of the story involving spy agencies, Internet moguls, global conspiracies, and semi-futuristic technology are a rather unstable mix of sci-fi extravagance, furious satire and fanboy jokiness. Colin Firth, who plays a foppish variation on the Bond-type super spy, acquits himself nicely in the dialog scenes but is pretty clearly out of his element in the movie’s blindingly souped-up fight scenes. Samuel L. Jackson is sharp and stingingly funny as the wide-eyed, lisping Internet mogul with sinister plans.

Taron Egerton is mostly likable as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, the fledgling secret agent whom the veteran Harry Hart (Firth) hopes to bring to the special “Kingsman” branch of the British secret services. Cinemark 14 and Feather River Cinemas. Rated R —J.C.S.

Still Alice

In Still Alice, Julianne Moore plays Alice, a 50-year-old linguistics professor who learns she’s afflicted with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Written and directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland (and based on a novel by Lisa Genova), the film presents itself as a stoic and compact family drama. Steering mostly clear of maudlin melodrama and tearjerker theatrics, it indulges those temptations (for which there are several opportunities in this story) only in carefully modulated (and almost minimalist) moments. There are several high-quality performances in the film— Moore as Alice, Alec Baldwin as her husband, and Kate Bosworth and Kristen Stewart as their daughters—and the Glatzer-Westmoreland drama is at its best when it’s addressing the tragic fallout for Alice’s family as well as for Alice herself. Since there’s a genetic element to Alice’s strain of Alzheimer’s, this drama also has its modern-day variation on the family curses that might have figured in the classics of tragic drama. That mostly unspoken “curse” lingers in the vicinity of nearly every scene in the second half of the film. Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13 —J.C.S.

THAT ENDLESS SKYWAY Anniversaries, hellos, goodbyes. Aside from all

the ramblings about his own discoveries, fetishes and adventures in Chicoland, Arts DEVO enjoys devoting the space in this column to recording the various milestones and transitions of our arts/music community. And this week brings a doozy: After more than two decades of hosting “a musical journey in the tradition of Woody Guthrie” on KZFR, local caterer and former City Councilman David Guzzetti is retiring his Woody and Friends radio show. In an announcement on the station’s Facebook page, Guzzetti said, “[N]o tears here, just smiles for KZFR staff, volunteers and KZFR David Guzzetti members and listeners for allowing me to play my favorite songs and invite guests for more than 1,100 shows over 22 years, every Monday morning!! Thanks so much!”

Station GM Rick Anderson said that, while there hasn’t been any specific replacement show booked yet, the timeslot will remain devoted to roots/Americana music. Take the journey one last time, Monday, March 16, 9 a.m.-noon, at 90.1 FM. And speaking of Woody Guthrie, this year marks the 75th anniversary of his signature song, “This Land Is Your Land.” On Feb. 23, 1940, Guthrie penned the original lyrics—his irritated response to Kate Smith’s popular version of the patriotic “God Bless America”—in a New York hotel room. It remains one of the most enduring songs ever, and it perfectly expresses Guthrie’s populist ideals and egalitarian vision of freedom for people of all walks of life—though some of his most pointed lyrics to that effect are often left out of campfire versions: “Was a high wall there that tried to stop me/A sign was painted said: Private Property/But on the back side it didn’t say nothing.”

And speaking of KZFR, this summer, Chico’s eclectic “peoplepowered” radio station will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Exact party plans haven’t been announced yet, but word is that there are “big plans” for multiple community celebations between May 19 and June 13. Stay tuned to 90.1 FM for more info, and for more great music and information from one of the pillars of the Chico community.

And, also celebrating a 25-year milestone this year is Chico’s Godfather of Jamming, Doug Stein. This Friday, March 13, at Lost on Main, the sleepy-eyed guitarist/vocalist will be playing with, well, everybody to commemorate his 25 years of rocking local clubs. Stein will be on stage all night, with two of his bands—Swamp Zen and Low Flying Birds— and also will join Electric Circus, GravyBrain and all of the gathered musicians for a closing monster jam.

Back in the late1980s, shortly after moving to town, I was working at Chico State’s Meriam Library. A fellow book-shelver—an eccentric starving sculptor (now an eccentric, successful sculptor who sells his work to the likes of Sir Elton John) named Dan Corbin—“hired” me to assist him in his studio. In a sweatbox of a shop on a typical Chico summer day, my job was to stir some mystery goo while Corbin prepared casts for molds. Despite the nearly unbearable heat, it was thrilling to contribute some sweat (a lot of sweat) to the artist’s work. Plus, I got paid: one giant Tacos Cortez burrito and a 40-ouncer of domestic lager. It was pretty great day!

Superman comics, Mister Mxyzptlk was a fiendish imp whose home was in the fifth dimension. He sometimes sneaked over into our world to bedevil the Man of Steel with pranks. There was one sure way he could be instantly banished back to his own realm for a long time: if Superman fooled him into saying his own name backward. You might think it would be hard to trick a magic rascal into saying “Kltpzyxm” when he knew very well what the consequences would be, but Superman usually succeeded. I’d like to suggest that you have a similar power to get rid of a bugaboo that has been bothering you, Aries. Don’t underestimate your ability to outsmart the pest.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In 1637,

mathematician Pierre de Fermat declared that he had solved the “Last Theorem,” a particularly knotty mathematical problem. Unfortunately, he never actually provided the proof that he had done so.

The mystery remained. Other math experts toiled for centuries looking for the answer. It wasn’t until 1994, more than 350 years later, that anyone succeeded. I think you are on the verge of discovering a possible solution to one of your own long-running riddles, Taurus. It may take a few more weeks, but you’re almost there. as a baby loggerhead turtle leaves its nest on a Florida beach, it heads for the ocean. It’s only 2 inches long. Although it can swim just one mile every two hours, it begins an 8,000-mile journey that takes ten years. It travels east to Africa, then turns around and circles back to where it originated. Along the way it grows big and strong as it eats a wide variety of food, from corals to sea cucumbers to squid. Succeeding at such an epic journey requires a stellar sense of direction and a prodigious will to thrive. I nominate the loggerhead turtle to be your power animal for the coming weeks, Cancerian.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In 1961, 19-year-

old Bob Dylan began doing solo performances of folk songs at New York clubs.

To accompany his vocals, he played an acoustic guitar and harmonica. By 1963, his career had skyrocketed. Critics called him a creative genius. Pop stars were recording the songs he wrote, making him rich. But he still kept his instrumentation simple, relying entirely on his acoustic guitar and harmonica. That changed in 1965, when he made the leap to rock ‘n’ roll. For the first time, his music featured a full drum set and electric guitar, bass and keyboards. Some of his fans were offended. How dare he renounce his folk roots? I wonder if it might be time for you to consider a comparable transition, Leo.
