are pretty laughable.

For starters, the City Council approved the municipal code back in May. That means locals had seven months to wrap their heads around the concept that they’d be charged 10 cents per paper bag should they not bring their own sacks. Pretty much any type of bag will do, by the way. In the days since the law took effect, we’ve seen folks use backpacks, tote bags and the popular ChicoBag-like nylon variety. We’ve also seen people reusing the thin plastic bags no longer being used by local stores.

In other words, most folks probably already have something at home that will do.

Chico’s move to pass this law isn’t exactly groundbreaking, either.

More than 130 municipalities around the state have similar versions of it on the books. Moreover, California legislators recently passed a similar policy restricting single-use plastic bags, and we know how long it takes to get anything done at the state Capitol. That law is now being challenged by those in the plastics industry who stand to lose money. They’ve paid signature-gatherers in an effort to force a referendum in the 2016 election.

We’re going to hear a lot of pro-plastic-bag propaganda in the coming year; about how the law is a job-killer, how reusable bags spread disease, how plastic bags are not harmful to the environment. It’s mostly bunk, of course.

Manufacturers can change with the times and start making thicker, reusable bags. The “germ factor” on the reusable varieties is mainly baseless, considering stores still provide the type of bags that hold raw meat and veggies. And for anyone who doesn’t believe in the environmental impacts of plastic in general, we’d invite them to vacation at Midway Island, where the offspring of albatrosses die at a ratio of 1-in-3 from eating plastic debris. Or take a trip to the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre— home of the so-called Pacific Garbage Patch. That’s where scientists have found concentrated levels of disintegrating plastics that enter the food chain. Those environmental catastrophes do exist, despite pollution-denier rhetoric.

This isn’t rocket science, folks. These products are harmful and doing without them only requires getting into a new habit. Ω

A fair compromise Can Chico Scrap Metal be a good neighbor? That was one of the questions

the City Council considered Tuesday evening during its regular meeting as it weighed whether or not to evict the business from its longtime home on East 20th Street. At least one neighbor said the business already is one. Yet another said that she’s worried about its operations harming the public’s health.

There’s also a question of fairness. That’s because the business was under the threat of a forced move for the second time, yet this time around had received no aid from the city to do so. The four conservative members of the council thought this seemed unreasonable and voted to allow Chico Scrap Metal’s owners and the city to come up with a plan that would allow the business to remain at that site.

Moving forward, the question is whether that plan will be sufficient to mitigate the concerns about its operations, as well as its unattractive aesthetics in this prominent part of south Chico.

We do think there is a potential for a compromise here. If the business no longer conducts processing—that is, if it becomes a collection-only site—and puts up an attractive fence and shrubbery, as was described during the meeting by Kim Scott, one of the owners of Chico Scrap Metal, we think the business should be able to stay put. If, on the other hand, they are unwilling to make those substantive changes, they need to go. Ω

Resolution Monday marks an anniversary that cements my standing as the black sheep in my family. Jan. 12 is the date I gave up most types of meat. At the end of 2013, I did something I don’t ordinarily do: I made a New Year’s resolution. I decided to give up all meat with the exception of seafood. People like to call this pescetarianism. I’m sure some of my family members have a more colorful name for it, though they don’t give me too hard a time these days.

Since the anniversary is nearly two weeks into 2014, you can probably guess that there was a hiccup with that resolution. It’s true. I caved just 11 days into the year. I was at a birthday party in the Bay Area for one of my childhood friends, which involved some late-night imbibing. The food served included shredded-pork tacos—I blew my pledge by eating one. But, since I’m a get-backon-the-horse kind of gal, I recommitted myself the next day.

And I’ve been successful. No beef, no fowl, no pork, no lamb, no wild game. Just veggies, grains (lots of them), fruit, fish and shellfish.

I’ve been a meat-eater my entire life, but I’ve occasionally dabbled in vegetarianism. Usually, that would last for two or three months. Bacon has always been my Achilles heel. Salty, crunchy, delicious bacon. After a year without most meats, it’s the only one I still crave from time to time.

When I made my resolution, the impetus had to do with my physical well-being more than anything else. I’m in the twilight of my 30s and have the typical concerns of someone my age. That I don’t exercise enough. That I don’t drink enough water (I’m still really bad about that).

That I deal with too much stress. That I don’t eat as healthfully as I should.

I’ve long known the health benefits of a plant-based diet—a lower risk of heart disease, for example—as well as the benefits to the environment. And I’ve set out on numerous occasions to cut out most meats, especially red meat. This time, I followed through.

I jumped back on the wagon after my shredded-pork breakdown last January with a renewed determination.

But what really solidified my resolve was watching an animal get slaughtered shortly into the new year. I was out on assignment last February for a cover story (see “Uneasy jobs,” Feb. 20) and saw the entire process; a mobile butcher pulled a lamb out of a barn and turned that animal into a meat product. It was eye-opening for me—an animal-lover. I’m not going to chronicle the whole process here, because I described it in detail in that story. And then I described my reaction in a column (see “Slaughter,” Feb. 20).

But I will reiterate something I wrote at the time.

Those who couldn’t handle reading the story ought to stick to the salad bar.

Today, it’s an astounding $18 trillion. California’s debt, as best can be determined, was $67 billion and has soared to $92 billion.

Sadly, we seem too willing to pile more debt upon future generations.

Unfortunately, elected officials seem incapable of stopping the insanity. The corrosive effect of special interest groups is too powerful to overcome. Senior citizens, teachers, businesses, unions, lawyers, bankers, farmers, military, ranchers, pharmaceuticals and environmentalists, to name a few, all have fingers in the government cookie jar.

Messing with these rice bowls can lead to political suicide and outright hostility. On one hand, we blame politicians for not doing anything to solve our debt problem. On the other, we criticize when they try. Perhaps it’s time we looked to ourselves for the answer. An old saying suggests, “When you point a finger of blame at someone, you have three fingers pointing right back at yourself.”

So, let’s each identify one thing we’re willing to give up. For starters, as a veteran, I’ll give up veterans’ homes. They’re costly to operate, serve relatively few veterans, are not an earned entitlement and the same services are available through MediCal. Dare I ask, what are you willing to give up?

Don’t praise the prez Re “Obama’s late-hour gains” (Editorial, Dec. 31): In the Dec. 31 editorial, President Obama is praised for his decision to provide a mechanism to avoid the deportation of millions of unauthorized immigrants.

Neither the editorial writer nor the president apparently took United States demographic fundamentals into consideration in the process of making such a decision.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 1950, the U.S. population was 151 million.

In 2010, the U.S. population was 308 million. By 2050, the U.S. population is due to reach about 400 million with no end in sight.

About three-fourths of the population increase during the last several decades has been due to immigrants and their offspring.

In spite of this dramatic population increase, with all of its causes and consequences, President Obama and certain members of his party have continued to advocate inflationary immigration measures such as the one mentioned in the editorial.

It is interesting to note that the editorial neglected to mention the fact that 25 states—most, to be sure, with Republican governors— have now joined together to sue the president’s administration. The suit submits that by issuing the executive action deferring deportations, the president is exceeding his constitutional authority.

If I was a progressive liberal I would be very unhappy with the president. He went to China and made a back-door deal that would require the largest gross producer of greenhouse emissions to do nothing for the next 16 years. U.S. companies will be at a huge disadvantage and this will cause more jobs to move overseas.

As far as foreign policy goes, Obama has demonstrated that he is the weakest U.S. president since Jimmy Carter. The Russians know it and have exploited his weakness several times with their expansion in the Crimea and beyond. The president prefers drone strikes against suspected terrorists to boots on the ground but can anyone name a time in history where airpower alone worked?

Pure propaganda A map is circulating—on social media, in the Enterprise-Record— that has lines converging on Chico.

Each line represents the path of a homeless person. The map is meant to demonstrate Mayor Mark Sorensen’s assertion that Chico is a homeless destination city.

As a piece of propaganda, the map is quite ingenious. But it fails the science test and it fails the civics test.

In order for the map to have any “truth-value,” it would have to be put in context. How many lines, from Chico, have gone in the 6

opposite direction? A former foster kid, now living on the streets of Santa Cruz? Anyone think that doesn’t happen? And, secondly, the map is meaningless if not compared with other cities—allowing us to see that they have very similar patterns. Why don’t the homeless-haters make an honest argument that we have more homeless per capita? Because we don’t— and many cities have more.

Secondly, homeless people are being questioned by the Chico police. These are not arrests, mind you. These are law-abiding people being asked where they came from; this information is being sent to police dispatch and plotted.

Where in the Constitution does it say that police can map the travels of citizens?

Stop the purge Residents should be alarmed and outraged by recent U.S. Forest Service actions that have further removed evidence of certain existing roads, trails and historic locations from the latest printing of the Lassen National Forest map.

The public is losing knowledge of, and access to, legitimate outdoor recreation sites within the LNF. The incremental purge of these traditional and historic sites from the map greatly reduces the likelihood of future public access to them.

Hunters, fishermen and outdoor recreationists contribute million of dollars in taxes, fees, licenses and related purchases to the local economy. This is often done to pursue outdoor recreation opportunities located within the national forest.

There is apparently a law enforcement component related to the elimination of map sites that impacts future public access to those sites.

I am greatly disappointed that area legislators have turned a blind

eye to the genuine danger arising fom the public’s loss of access to national forest sites (public lands) by the actions of the forest service.

The serious consequences of our legislators’ inaction on this issue will result in further loss to the public as more sites disappear from future maps. This practice by the U.S. Forest Service needs to stop.

Hope during the holidays Re “The holidays aren’t so bad” (Weekly Dose, Dec. 11): The reasons to have depression during holidays are as many as the ones to be happy during these special dates. You may remember a lost loved one, but you may go visit the loved people who live far from you; you may feel guilty for not having done your best during the year, but you have a symbolic date to restart your life.

Personally, I choose to enjoy the holidays, not only to celebrate, but also to recover strength, hope and peace. It’s a time to donate some time to hear that relative who I do not get along well with. It’s a time to hand out some material things I do not use anymore.

The Daily Misery Index of 2014 showed that the lowest rates of searches occurred during holidays and the numbers found at the end of this year tended to follow the average. This fact made me think that the time of induced depression can be also days to fight against it.

If people’s searches on the Internet are suggesting a more positive mindset toward holidays, it seems to me that this is a first step to beat depression, anxiety and stress.

HELP WITH POLICE RESPONSES

In the wake of recent fatal shootings by local law enforcement officers, the Butte County affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and local police departments are developing a program that addresses situations in which officers respond to those with mental problems.

“It invites the officer to step out of an enforcement mode and into a public service mode,” Capt. Andy Duch of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office told California Healthline.

In that same article, which announces the program, Lynn Graebner writes: “When law enforcement and people experiencing a mental health crisis intersect, it’s often not clear to either of them what they are dealing with or how to proceed. A new program in Butte County seeks to make those encounters safer for everyone.”

SECULAR AT LAST

George Gold, coordinator of the Butte County Coalition of Reason and president of the Atheists of Butte County, delivered the city of Chico’s first secular invocation Tuesday evening, Jan. 6, during the City Council’s regular meeting.

According to Gold, the invocation was two years in the making, following discussions and emails with city officials. It also follows a 2014 U.S. Supreme Court ruling (Greece v. Galloway) that specifically holds that no preference may be applied to those seeking to deliver invocations.

During his invocation, Gold noted that he was representing more than 17,000 local secular residents. He asked the panel to look for wisdom in governmental documents, such as the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the city charter. He also called for tolerance.

“Let us open our hearts to the inherent dignity and worth of each person in our community,” he said. “I hope we can appreciate and realize our differences of race and religion or lack of religion.”

SEN. NIELSEN NOMINATIONS

State Sen. Jim Nielsen (R-Gerber) has been nominated to serve as chair of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs and vice chair of the Senate Committee on Budget and Fiscal Review, according to a press release sent from his office. “It is an honor to be the leading voice for the needs of our veterans, all of whom are deserving of our respect and gratitude for their service,” said Nielsen (pictured), who has no military experience.

As for serving on the budget committee, Nielsen said it was important that the governor and state Legislature refrain from spending to allow the economy to grow. “The governor described the budget surplus as ‘precarious.’ Therefore, it is necessary to confront and address the state’s long-term debts in the budget.”

Nielsen was nominated by Senate President Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) and confirmation by the Senate Rules Committee was set for Jan. 7, past CN&R’s deadline.

Battaglia had reportedly attacked the deputies with a knife.

District Attorney Mike Ramsey said deputies Hugh Hooks and William Brewton had responded to a call from Battaglia’s mother, Alynn Brutsman, at about 4 p.m. She told the dispatcher that she had just arrived home to find a broken window and that she believed her son, who lived in the house next door, had forced entry into her home. She added that he had threatened her in the recent past.

Brutsman described Battaglia as a bipolar schizophrenic who’d had a mental health evaluation on Christmas Day but was not held for observation.

Battaglia was part of a large musical family and former drummer for a popular local band called the Musical Brewing Company, which features his sister Alli Battaglia, who is wellknown in local musical circles. His death came the day after his 28th birthday.

The incident is being investigated by the Butte County Officer Involved Shooting/Critical Incident Team, which is made up of representatives from each of the Butte County law enforcement agencies as well as the Attorney General Department of Justice crime lab, the California Highway Patrol, the State Parks and Recreation Department and the California Department of Fish and Game.

Ramsey said the investigation is still waiting for final reports from the Department of Justice as well as a toxicology report from the autopsy.

Ramsey offered an account of the day’s

events. “[Battaglia’s mother] knew he was staying at the other house. She had asked him to stay there,” Ramsey said. “There was the incident on Christmas Day just a few days before, so when she came home and saw the broken window, she called 911.”

Ramsey said after making the call, Brutsman drove down Good View Road to meet with the deputies on Clark Road and was then escorted back to her house.

She and the deputies made contact with Battaglia through the front door of his house, but he locked it and refused to come out.

“Deputy Hooks said, ‘We just want to talk and make sure you’re OK,’” Ramsey said.

At that point, Brutsman went to the side door of the house and opened it to a 20-foot-long hallway. Ramsey said the deputies spotted Battaglia at the other end of the hall just before he stepped into the kitchen, where he allegedly grabbed a knife.

“He then reappeared and suddenly rushed down the hallway,” Ramsey said.

“By that point, his mother had left and deputy Hooks was basically watching someone running full steam at him and yelling incoherently.”

He said Hooks spotted the knife just as Battaglia began to make “frenzied stabbing motions.” Hooks started to deploy his gun, but Battaglia reached him first and pushed him back, forcing the deputy to put up his arms in self defense.

At that point, Brewton entered the hall and Battaglia turned his attention to him, Ramsey said.

“He started making the same frenzied type of stabbing motions toward deputy Brewton. He pulled his gun, but Mr. Battaglia grabbed it, which caused it not to fire. At that point deputy Hooks was able to draw his gun and, out of fear that deputy Brewton was in grave danger of being killed, he fired one shot into the side of Mr. Battaglia’s body.”

The shot went through his arm and into his torso, severing his aorta, Ramsey said. Paradise police officers arrived

Recycled on site on the scene, as did a medical crew, and Battaglia was determined to be dead.

In the skirmish, Brewton received a 3-inch

cut on his throat that did not require stitches. He also suffered a jammed thumb and assorted bruising, Ramsey said.

In the aftermath, both Battaglia’s mother and his brothers, who arrived later, “were understandably upset with what had taken place,” Ramsey said.

Battaglia’s sister Alli said that while the family is deeply mourning the loss of their brother and son, they also share another concern.

“I guess what’s most on the family’s mind is raising awareness about the police department’s need for safe methods of dealing with mentally ill people in a nonviolent manner,” she said in an email.

But, according to Ramsey, the deputies do have such expertise.

“The deputies had gone through crisis intervention training to learn how to deal with this kind of thing. They’d asked him to ‘Please talk to us.’”

Ramsey said the deputies had dealt with Battaglia before. Butte County court records show an incident in December 2007 in which he pleaded no contest to a charge of resisting a peace officer and was ordered to enroll in the New Dawn Recovery rehab program, which he did, successfully completing the requirement.

Soon after the shooting both Ramsey and Sheriff Kory Honea arrived on the scene, which Ramsey said is not unusual in such a case.

“Any time the agency has an officerinvolved shooting, the head of the agency responds and I coordinate the offices [that make up the Officer Involved Shooting/Critical Incident Team].”

The officers have been taken off duty, which is standard protocol in such cases.

As for this happening in the wake of several high-profile officer-involved deaths—including the cases of Michael Brown, who was shot by an officer in Ferguson, Mo., and Eric Garner, who died while being restrained with a chokehold by police on Staten Island, N.Y.— Ramsey said there is no comparison.

“This is a different type of case,” he said. “What we’ve had in the Ferguson and New York cases were unarmed people. [Battaglia] was a man who was definitely armed, and a man who by all indications was homicidal. He attacked the officers. He was really frenzied. It was not just a walk down the hallway with the knife uplifted. When he got to the officers he started stabbing motions, they were legitimately and reasonably in fear of their lives.” Ω

doors by now, is being recycled rather than moved, following a decision at the City Council’s Tuesday, Jan. 6, meeting.

Ultimately the 4-3 vote to let the company stay in its current site, after eight years of telling it to move, boiled down to what members of the council’s new conservative majority thought was a matter of fairness.

The story goes back to 1983, when the city asked the company, which then operated an auto wrecking yard on Humboldt Avenue, to move so its site could be reclaimed for a lighter, more compatible use. The city aided Chico Scrap Metal in moving to its current location on East 20th Street, across from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Then, in 2004, residents of the Chapman and Mulberry neighborhoods developed a neighborhood plan under which CSM would move out in favor of a small commercial site with, it was hoped, a dry cleaner, coffee shop, convenience store and so forth. The plan, which was adopted by the city as well as the county, called for both agencies to help CSM move.

That didn’t happen. And CSM was unable to find a new, affordable location that was in what its owner thought was a viable location.

After an extension, the deadline for ceasing operations was Dec. 31, 2014.

CSM serves 2,200 customers a month, owner Kim Scott told the council, and recycles many tons of metal. It provides jobs and a valuable public service, she said.

Last month she petitioned the council either to help it move or allow it to stay put,

stating in a letter that she would be willing to change its operation to metal collection only—processing would be done at its Durham location—and to upgrade its aesthetics, putting in a new fence and perimeter shrubbery.

Asked by Vice Mayor Sean Morgan how she felt about being told to move—again— Scott said it was “outrageous.” She asked council members to imagine how they would feel “if someone said, ‘We moved you here and now we don’t like it. You need to move, see ya later, bye.’”

There was little opposition to CSM’s proposal, and in fact several neighbors stepped forward in support of the company. Patrick Kelly, who said he lives next door, had “no complaints,” and found the new Habitat for Humanity houses on East 19th Street that back up to CSM, with their many cars, more of a nuisance than the recycling yard.

Former Mayor Karl Ory, who was on the council in 1983, challenged the assertion that the city had helped locate the East 20th

Neighbor Adrienne Edwards worried that toxins in the CSM yard would get into the dust and drift into neighbors’ homes and nearby Chapman Elementary School classrooms.

An attorney for CSM, Therese Cannata, stated that a recent, “exhaustive” state Department of Toxic Substances Control investigation determined that there was no hazardous waste on the site and never had been.

Former Councilman Bob Evans insisted that if the city wants Chico Scrap Metal to move, the city should help pay for it. Several people, including council members, echoed that sentiment.

Mayor Mark Sorensen charged that forcing CSM to cease operations amounted to a taking. “It would take the usefulness of the land from its rightful owner,” he said. And the property in all likelihood would sit there for decades. “I find it very difficult to believe [the uses proposed for the site] would pencil out any time in the near-term horizon,” he said.

Councilman Randall Stone essentially agreed with Sorensen, but noted, “The city has invested in the Chapman-Mulberry Neighborhood Plan” and should enforce it.

Councilwoman Ann Schwab noted that the city had approved the Habitat for Humanity development based on the belief that the scrap yard would move out.

Community Development Director Mark Wolfe was given 90 days to come up with a framework that would allow CSM to stay put but ensure that its proposed changes were made.

least, that cash comes from home builders, in the form of development impact fees. And with development on the rise, the city stands to see more and more money coming in for capital projects. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are in a growth mode, in an upswing,â&#x20AC;? said Ruben Martinez, director of Public Works for the city. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Development] over the past two years has really outpaced the previous four. So we can anticipate these funds, if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not healthy, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see them become healthy.â&#x20AC;?

New housing developments seem to be popping up around the edges of town. Perhaps the most noticeable ones are along the eastern portion of Eaton Road, which was recently widened and expanded. The money to complete those road projects came from development impact fees, specifically the Street Facility Improvement Fee. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If someone is developing a building in our city, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impacting our city,â&#x20AC;? Martinez said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As they expand housing and help our city grow, these fees help us improve our infrastructure.â&#x20AC;?

The fees, which range from $10,000 to $14,000, are set aside for various purposes, Martinez said. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s say a builder wants to put in a new subdivision. The city would analyze the impacts of that subdivision and what sorts of infrastructure improvements it might warrant. The money, then, would be disbursed among the 13 development impact funds to be used accordingly.

Every year, the city puts together a report that breaks down exactly how much money is in each fund and what projects they financed the previous year. The most recent report, covering fiscal year 2013-14, was released last month and will be presented to the City Council at its next meeting, Jan. 20.

Martinez explained that, in addition to paying for infrastructure improvements, the fees also pay for staff time to analyze what projects are needed and how much theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll cost. Many projects call for a match from the city because they often end up benefiting the city as a whole, not just those moving into

new homes or apartments. For example, the Basic Park Facility Fee paid 96 percent of the cost to renovate Caper Acres and the Bikeway Improvement Fee paid for a new path from Little Chico Creek to East 20th Street.

In the past, the cost of some projects was partially taken care of through redevelopment funds. Since those funds are no longer available, the city is responsible for offsetting costs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For expenditure purposes, we need the rest of our budget to be healthy so we can have the match needed for some of these impact fees,â&#x20AC;? Martinez said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re building projects now. We are using impact fees. But until revenues are healthier, we arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to use them as we did in the past. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking at things very closely.â&#x20AC;?

The city is in the process of updating its nexus study, which outlines all of the potential growth areas in town and lays out a framework for what improvements should be made over the coming decade. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We try to stay slightly ahead of the growth,â&#x20AC;? Martinez said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always trying to anticipate where things are going to be moving. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the reasons the Highway 32 project remained a high priority and received funding from some of these fundsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;we know growth is going to impact that area. Now with the new courthouse, we might see an even bigger uptick over there.â&#x20AC;?

Future improvements, according to the current nexus study, include expanding the Highway 99/East 20th Street interchange, the creation of an additional bridge at OneMile Recreation Area for bicycles, the construction of a new fire station and purchase of several new fire engines. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good outlook at this point,â&#x20AC;? he bald eagle—our national Tsense symbol—is usually equated to a of regal majesty. But the

mighty bird needed a little human care on Christmas Day, when a young male eagle was found critically injured in the fields around Lundberg Family Farms in Richvale, just outside Chico. And so began the chain of volunteer rehabilitators who, ahem, flocked to help nurse the bird, a protected species, back to health.

“It took an effort from everyone,” Roberta Kirshner, founder of the Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation, said in a recent phone interview. Kirshner was the first to receive the bird from Animal Control, before calling on other friends for support.

“Roberta called me on Christmas, and asked, ‘What should we do with this?’” said Marilyn Gamette, a longtime local wildlife rescuer and founder of the nonprofit group Bidwell Wildlife Rehabilitation. Gamette, who’s rehabilitated a slew of animals— from mountain lions to hawks—in her program’s 40 years, says she’s helped roughly six bald eagles over the course of her work.

Gamette immediately hopped on board to aid the wounded raptor, but finding a physical facility to host him wasn’t so easy during the holidays. “We weren’t completely set up for him, but we took him in,” said veterinarian Dawn Alves, owner of Chico’s All About Pets Veterinary Hospital. A certified mixed practitioner for large and small animals who’s “dabbled

in birds,” Alves said this was her first encounter with a bald eagle.

“The biggest problem, besides dehydration, was the bony vertebrae caught in his esophagus, probably from something he had eaten,” Alves explained. “Because of that, he couldn’t keep any food down.”

For the next week, the young raptor received quite an impressive series of treatments, beginning with an initial round of antibiotics, and including a procedure to remove the bony material stuck in his throat. Between the next round of medication, use of an IV and the constant care offered by Alves, Kirshner and Gamette, the eagle was in significantly better shape by New Year’s Eve. “Dawn did an excellent job of further stabilizing the bird,” Gamette said.

It’s primarily this intense volunteer support that gets protected and endangered bird species back on their feet, Gamette and Alves explained. Gamette, who used her own funds to pay for the initial rounds of medication for this particular bird, said she can be reimbursed by the Butte County Fish and Game Commission—if she chooses to apply for a grant.

“There is not enough funding to pay for the care of these birds,” Alves agreed.

Once an endangered species, the bald eagle was taken off the Federal Endangered and Threatened Species list in 2007, but remains protected under federal laws, and the killing, selling or

harming of the birds and their nests is illegal. “Not as much as a fingernail can be tampered with,” said Gamette. (That goes for talons, too.)

With federal initiatives such as the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act protecting its livelihood, the eagle is “making a comeback,” said Lora Haller, park ranger and visitor services manager of the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. She claims dozens can be seen every winter at the facility south of Willows.

“They follow the water fowl and come from Oregon and Washington, and in some cases as far north as Alaska,” she said.

This certainly is a big improvement from their endangered status, which can be traced back to mid20th century practices including primarily the use of the agricultural insecticide DDT, Haller said.

Although not fatal to adult eagles, the pesticide caused the thinning of egg shells, endangering their births. DDT has since been banned from usage in the United States and Canada, another factor contributing to the species’ recovery.

With the ongoing support from the wildlife-loving community, scientists are optimistic that the country’s bird will continue its impressive comeback. And for the local eagle that got its Christmas miracle, things are still looking up; it was transferred to the care of Roseville veterinarian Vicky Joseph, where it will soon have access to flight cages to further its rehabilitation. Gamette, who stays up-to-date on the bird’s recovery via Joseph, happily reports, “He’s in good care and eating on his own.”

Nationally, drug overdoses have overtaken car crashes as the No. 1 cause of accidental death, and over half those deaths involve pharmaceutical drugs, according to a press release from the California Department of Public Health.

Opioid pain relievers, though often legally obtained, are the most widely abused prescription drugs; the number of people being treated for opioid addiction in publicly funded programs in California has doubled since 2007, and the total cost of health care related to abuse of opioid medications in the U.S. is estimated at $70 billion.

The group includes a range of state heath organizations and will work to educate the public regarding the Medical Board of California’s recently revised guidelines for prescribing pain medication.

ACA MANDATES HIT BUSINESSES

With the New Year comes a new round of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act provisions set to take effect, including the employer mandate on large companies that has been delayed twice already.

Starting this year, businesses that employ 100 or more full-time workers will either comply with the mandate to provide health insurance coverage to at least 70 percent of their employees or face fines, according to California Healthline. In 2016, they will have to start offering coverage to 95 percent of their employees.

Meanwhile, mid-size businesses with 50 to 99 full-time workers won’t face fines for failing to provide coverage until 2016.

GOP lawmakers are expected to continue their push to raise the mandate’s threshold for full-time workers from 30 to 40 hours a week; the House approved such a bill last April, but it failed to advance in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

FLU TOUCHES DOWN

It’s officially influenza season in Butte County, as 16 separate lab-confirmed cases have been reported by local health care providers, and four severe flu cases have hospitalized county residents since Dec. 1.

As such, Butte County Public Health offers simple tips for preventing the virus from spreading: avoid close contact with sick people; cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze; wash or sanitize your hands regularly; and stay at home when you experience flu symptoms.

And while the release concedes “vaccines released for this year’s flu are not as well matched as vaccines in the past,” it still urges vaccinations for everyone over 6 months old. “It’s the most important thing you can do to protect yourself and your family from the flu,” said Dr. Mark Lundberg, county health officer.

Legacies reflected After working side by side for decades, pair of Enloe doctors honored together by

hen the victim of a serious accident is W delivered to Enloe Medical Center, either via the hospital’s FlightCare helicop-

ter or an ambulance, surgeons and emergency physicians work closely together to treat the injured patient. It’s in that setting— not on committees, not socially—that Dr. Jeffrey Lobosky, a neurosurgeon, and Dr. William Voelker, an emergency medicine specialist, really know each other.

“Bill and I have worked together for 30 years; we’ve been through the wars together for sure,” Lobosky said. “We’ve worked side by side for a long time, even before we had a trauma center, so we were able to see this go from a small community hospital with an emergency room to a regional, referring, Level II trauma center. We’ve been through that growing process and suffered all the growing pains together.”

Lobosky and Voelker are recipients of the 2014 Physician Legacy Award, with which Enloe has recognized preeminent Chico doctors since 2004. Three times over

the past decade, including this year, the selectors on the Medical Executive Committee deadlocked, with their tie vote resulting in dual honorees.

Along with providing a high level of patient care, Lobosky and Voelker’s involvement in their respective, related departments—Neuro-Trauma Surgical Intensive Care and Emergency Services— have helped the hospital expand and evolve.

“Dr. Lobosky and Dr. Voelker have truly created a legacy in their combined 61 years of membership on the Enloe medical staff,” said Dr. Marcia Nelson, vice

president of medical affairs. “Our community has greatly benefited from their involvement in trauma care.”

Nelson also praises Lobosky for championing bike safety through the Heads Up project, providing helmets to children, and Voelker for bringing “a new level of expertise to the area’s emergency services, which includes the FlightCare helicopter.”

Voelker, a Bay Area native, came to the

North State in 1980 after completing one of the few residency programs that existed for emergency medicine, at Geisinger Medical Center in Pennsylvania.

He started off working at Feather River Hospital in Paradise but soon added shifts at Enloe, Oroville Hospital and St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff. The next year he became the first board-certified emergency physician between Sacramento and the Oregon border; by 1983 he’d joined the Enloe ER full-time.

By becoming a physician, Voelker followed in his father’s footsteps. But paternal influence doesn’t stop there. Voelker’s father, a veteran of the Air Force, would take him as a boy to see the Blue Angels flying out of Moffett Field. “There’s nothing like six giant F-4 Phantoms rocking the earth going over you that doesn’t light your fire and make you go, ‘I want to do that, I want to do that!’”

Voelker said. But, with the Vietnam War still underway as he graduated high school, going to college—then into medicine—seemed like a better path.

After he settled down in the North State, he learned of a program enabling only one physician in the Navy Reserves to attend Flight Surgery School in Florida. Its graduates fly a minimum of 40 hours annually.

Voelker applied; he got rejected. He applied the next year; got rejected. Undeterred, he joined the Navy Reserves in 1993, underwent training with Marines at the desert base in Twentynine Palms—“17 days of hell,” he calls it—and was subsequently approved for the flight training, which he completed in 1995.

Over the next two decades, Voelker flew over 700 sorties in 18 different types of aircraft among 27 Navy squadrons. His service took him to Norway and into exercises with Navy SEALs. He holds the rank of Navy captain.

“I do believe I experienced one of the best careers possible in the U.S. Navy,” Voelker said.

Meanwhile, he just wrapped up his career at Enloe, where he served as chair of the Emergency Department for the past 12 years.

His final shift ended at 2 a.m. on Dec. 16, the day he received his Physician Legacy Award.

“It is a great honor to be so recognized by

the medical staff,” he said, “and I do appreciate it since over the years it often seems you’re toiling in anonymity and futility.”

Lobosky, too, says he appreciates the recog-

nition from his peers: “I’m really humbled when I think of the other physicians that are deserving of this award, and so it’s an honor that I really cherish.”

Born in the Chicago area and raised in East Los Angeles, Lobosky blazed a new trail in his family by going to college and becoming a doctor—the career he wanted from age 11, after a sports injury exposed him to a hospital emergency room.

He got his pre-med degree from the University of Notre Dame, medical degree from UC Irvine and neurosurgery training at the University of Iowa. Encouraged by his wife, he visited Chico, where he’s practiced since 1984 despite the temptation of academic positions.

“I really love teaching,” he said, “but we’ve set our roots here, made our friends here, raised our kids here. The community’s been good to me. At the end of the day, we just decided that the prestige of the university was not enough to pull us away from the people and place that we love.”

Locally, Lobosky has been active in hospital leadership, serving as medical director of Enloe’s Neuro-Trauma Surgical ICU since 1991, two terms as department chair for Orthopedic Surgery/Neurosurgery/Podiatry and currently as a member of the hospital’s governing body, the board of trustees.

His involvement extends to national organizations, namely the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

As for academia, Lobosky is an associate clinical professor at UC San Francisco and regularly teaches at Chico State. He lectures about medicine, and also on the health care system, following publication of his 2012 book, It’s Enough to Make You Sick. That treatise, he feels, may prove his biggest legacy.

“I feel I’ve done my part, and when I’m dead and gone, my grandkids will know I at least tried to make a difference.” Ω

“GCS grew out of a handyman business, and as I got busier, I needed to become a licensed contractor. From there I started looking for ‘green’ products and ways to save clients money.” As of 2014, Green Construction Service is made up of nine employees. With myriad credentials recognizing green building strategies, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) and BPI (Building Performance Institute), Green has found his niche with an eco-conscious construction model.

“We take a whole building approach,” Vice President Shannon Iris said of the difference between GCS and other construction services. “First we do an assessment of the house to see where there is energy loss. Then, using energy modeling software, David determines the current building usage and 14

recommendations for improvement.”

“It used to be that each specific trade would come in—heating guy does his thing, insulation guy does his thing. But by looking at the whole package, we can make sure everything in the house works together,” Green explained.

For GCS, the “whole package” of services includes air sealing, insulation, heating and air mechanical improvements, and installation of daylighting. From there, they attempt to find a balance between energy use and solar needs.

“When people call us because they want solar panels installed, it’s because they have a high energy bill and they’re trying to get rid of it. We backtrack and get to the source of why they have that high bill and steer them into energy efficiency first.

So, instead of a 5kw system, they may only need a 3kw system in terms of a solar energy system.”

While roughly 95 percent of GCS’s time is dedicated to residential jobs (90 percent of which are in Chico), Green and company work with commercial businesses as well. And thanks to the California Clean Energy Jobs Act (Proposition 39), which can allocate up to $550 million annually to be dispersed for energy efficiency projects in schools, GCS has partnered with local schools as well.

“But the majority of our work is with

residential projects,” Iris said. “And many of our clients are low- to middle-income people. Some people we work with don’t even have high energy bills but want to do the remodeling because it’s the right thing to do.”

For those who’ve invested hefty dollars on home improvements, Green and Iris say that PG&E’s Energy Upgrade California has been an invaluable program for helping clients with the cost of remodeling. “David was the first contractor in Butte County to partner with PG&E’s rebate program, and being able to get our clients rebates is huge,” Iris said of the statewide project, which offers rebates of up to $6,500 for those who make energy-saving improvements within the home. “It’s a win-win for everyone,” Green added.

With situations like that, Green says improvements aren’t just necessary for saving money and energy, but for safety, too.

Looking ahead at 2015, Green has big plans for his business. “We’re launching iGreen, a DBA of our parent company, Green Construction Services. Basically, we’re rebranding ourselves. Our goal is to make iGreen the industry leader in a systems approach to home management.”

At the end of the day, the motivation to grow his business is simple: “I want to make a difference. Energy efficiency is about reducing our footprint on the planet.

It’s about creating comfortable homes for people to live in. I love the letters we get from clients remarking about how different it feels to be living in their homes.” □

I have never been one for New Year’s resolutions. Mostly because by this point in January, I’ve already been too undisciplined to keep up with any of my goals and have rationalized that they were all ridiculous to begin with. No one needs a clean office to be productive. And it is far too cold to start an exercise regime this time of year—even if you’re only walking from the parking lot to the gym entrance.

In spite of my apathy toward resolutions, last year I ended up in Fleet Feet in downtown Chico on New Year’s Eve, buying shoes with some Christmas gift cards. I hadn’t planned it that way, but I had the day off and in my quest to participate in a 5k race a friend had organized in November, I had finally worn out my 4-year-old tennis shoes.

The experience at Fleet Feet rivaled that of buying a wedding dress a few months earlier. After a series of measurements, parading around in each shoe option and a test lap around the store merchandise, I walked out with a new pair of shoes.

There were no resolutions to go along with my new shoes, but buying them at the start of a new year was more of a milestone marker for me. I slipped on my pink Sauconys the day before my wedding in June to get in a quick nerve-releasing run with my maid of honor along Trinity Lake. I wore them up the drive to Crescent City to spend my grandmother’s last remaining days by her side. They were the same shoes that crossed the Almond Bowl finish line with me in November, equipping me to run the farthest distance I ever had, alongside some great friends in a halfmarathon relay.

If you haven’t been to Fleet Feet for a while, you may notice some new faces next time you visit. Chico residents Paul and Kristina Smith, and Kristina’s mother, Carol Esparza, took over ownership on Oct. 1. Paul and Kristina met while attending college in Chico and have been active members of the local running community for years. Kristina even worked at Fleet Feet for a few years, under previous owners Alan Rice and Susan Zepernick, and Paul has been coaching in Fleet Feet’s training programs since 2006.

When I spoke with Kristina last week, she mentioned that this upcoming weekend (Jan. 9-11) the store is having a sale on their 2014 merchandise to make way for 2015 shoes and apparel. If you haven’t made any resolutions yet, it’s not too late to start a fresh year with new footwear.

You don’t have to commit to running in them five times a week, or resolve to reach 300 miles in them by the end of 2015. Like me, it may just be comforting to share your year with a new pair of kicks and see where they take you.

Five local folks who are bound to be newsmakers in 2015

ast week, the CN&R took a look back at the noteworthy events of 2014 in our annual year-in-review issue. And for our first cover package of the new year, we’re making predictions for what’s to come by profiling some of the folks we believe will make headlines in 2015.

Last year was an election year, so we have the usual suspects—those newly sworn in as Chico City Council members.

This cycle includes Andrew Coolidge and Reanette Fillmer. The other successful council candidate, Mark Sorensen, was featured four years ago in our annual “Who(m) to watch” issue when he first gained a seat at the dais, so you won’t find him in this cover package, though we are certain he’ll be a newsmaker.

The other three Chicoans featured here have diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, but what they have in common is a commitment to the community and a desire to contribute to it in significant ways.

“My role feels challenging anyway, but when I think of it in the context of the changes in the city’s leadership ...” Katie Simmons began during a recent interview. She went on to explain how she’s worked with three city managers and responded to myriad crises since becoming the president and CEO of the Chico Chamber of Commerce right before news broke about the city’s financial crisis, back in the spring of 2012.

Indeed, Simmons’ tenure as the city’s leading advocate for the business community has taken place during the most strained financial times for the city and unprecedented turnover in administrators at City Hall. In that time, less than three years, she’s been on the front lines as it relates to Chico’s many challenges, and that’s required a deeper level of community engagement on her and the chamber’s part.

It’s been quite a departure from a role that traditionally opposes or endorses local initiatives and proposals. That was patently clear this past fall when Simmons spoke openly about her daughter’s near-abduction over the summer. She was leading a press conference outside of City Hall, the intention of which was to, as she put it, “roll out the red carpet for shoppers” during the holidays. Simmons and representatives of the Downtown Chico Business Association had wrangled together a number of community leaders to announce that the Chico Police Department was adding foot and bicycle patrols in the downtown business district.

Simmons hadn’t planned to talk about how a man had stolen a car with then-9year-old Adela inside (her quick-thinking daughter jumped out of the vehicle). But she had a feeling something was awry at the event on the steps of the City Council chambers, and she felt compelled to give a personal narrative to the vagrancy issues facing the city.

Arts advocate MONICA MCDANIEL As founder and president of the nonprofit Chico Arts Foundation, Monica McDaniel will most assuredly be at the center of any arts advocacy efforts taking place in Chico in 2015. And the city’s arts community is in dire need of advocacy.

With the City Council’s recent decision to limit city Arts Commission meetings to twice a year (down from six), and the nearly nonexistent funding allocated for public art and local arts organizations, the relationship between the city and its oftcelebrated arts community is fractured at best.

The Chico Arts Foundation was officially formed (with the North Valley Community Foundation) on Jan. 6, 2011, said McDaniel, explaining that it had always been a goal of the Arts Commission, which was founded in 1990, to create “a fundraising mechanism so that it would become [self]-sustainable in the future.

“I didn’t think they’d actually cut [the arts] the way they have, but I knew that it would have to be self-sustaining,” McDaniel said. “And I know that [the arts are] a thing that people want.”

The uncertainty of the commission and city finances would seem to make an entity like the foundation crucial to the local arts scene.

“The foundation can operate a little differently than the commission” when it comes to rules for public meetings, McDaniel said. “But for the foundation, we wanted the transparency and the public inclusion also. Therefore, that link to the commission is important.”

McDaniel is a recently termed-out member of the Arts Commission, having served since 2009. She has put her name in the ring to rejoin for another term (the City Council hasn’t made its selections yet).

It’s hoped that upcoming results of the recently completed Arts Commissioncoordinated Arts and Economic Prosperity survey—which McDaniel helped administer—will be able to further underline the connection between arts and culture and the local economy.

But with or without that link to the commission, the foundation is continuing

Her instincts proved correct. After making the announcement, a member of the police union, the Chico Police Officers’ Association, attempted to deflate the event by telling those in attendance that police officers were already overworked and weren’t going to pick up the voluntary shifts in the city center.

“I left feeling exhausted and devastated,” Simmons said. But there was a positive side, too, and that was that the media and community at large started asking the right questions, she said. And in short order, the police patrols started taking place downtown.

That, of course, is just one of the controversies the chamber has worked to resolve over the past couple of years. Conversations continue about the police department’s policy regarding alarms, following an announcement last spring from then-Police Chief Kirk Trostle that the city would no longer respond to automated systems. More recently, the chamber is taking the lead on efforts to secure commercial air service following the exit of United Airlines’ SkyWest last month.

In short, big challenges lie ahead. However, Simmons seems undeterred. She said she takes her role as a community leader very seriously and, though she’s lived here for a relatively short time (about seven years), is deeply connected to the city.

Simmons grew up in the Bay Area. Her brother came here for college and her parents subsequently moved to the region. At the time, Simmons, a sociology major who attended UC San Diego, traveled around the world extensively for her job as the director of operations for the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. She made the move in 2008 with her then-toddler in tow; her first job in the area was as executive director of the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce.

Her professional life has evolved greatly since then, as has her personal life. It’s here that she met her husband, Rodney Cox. The couple are now parents of a 2-year-old, Heidi. Looking back, Simmons says she realized early on Chico was the place she needed to be.

“When I visited on the weekends, I thought, ‘that’s my home,’” she said.

with its arts advocacy, most visibly in its public-art tour collaboration with Tehama Group Communications, a student-run public relations firm at Chico State. The interactive walking tour will be a guide to the many stand-alone public art pieces in Chico. Participants will be able to click on QR codes in a brochure and pull up YouTube videos filmed with McDaniel and Mary Gardner, former city arts coordinator and current CAF board member, explaining the history and significance of each piece.

“Our intention is to launch this tour in April of 2015,” McDaniel said.

The aim of the videos is to increase understanding of what went into bringing all the public art into being as well as give an up-close look at the condition of the pieces, some of which are in dire need of repair.

Born and raised in Upland, McDaniel came to Chico for school in 1993, graduated Chico State with a degree in art history and currently works as the outreach coordinator and capital-development coordinator at Blue Oak Charter School. She’s also an artist herself, creating assemblage pieces when she can find time and helping her fellow Burning Man camp members weld together a mutant vehicle for the playa.

“Part of why I stayed here is because it was a community I could get involved with,” McDaniel said. “This current climate is surprising. It’s just shocking to me.” She said she hopes the current events will serve as a wake-up call to locals who didn’t turn out at the polls in recent elections. “I don’t think that people really realize [the power] that our City Council has to make or break our local culture. … It would be my hope that the city recognizes what it’s lost.”

In 2012, Andrew Coolidge found himself just 222 votes shy of a seat on the Chico City Council. Rather than letting his political aspirations die, the self-described fiscal conservative kept his eye on the prize, further educating himself about city issues, including attending council meetings and preparing himself for a second bid in November 2014.

This time around, Coolidge was the top vote-getter for three open seats on the dais. He also raised about $41,000 in campaign donations, though he credits his success more with hands shaken than dollars spent.

“As a virtual unknown in town in 2012, I think the thing that benefited me the most was going out and talking to people door-todoor,” said Coolidge, explaining he visited about 7,000 random Chico residents on foot during that race. This year, he focused on 3,000 of those most likely to vote for him and accomplished his outreach on a bicycle.

“When you’re talking to thousands of people at their door, you find out real quick what their concerns are,” Coolidge said. “It’s a little surprising, and I think that some candidates who don’t do the door-to-door, who just go to the public meetings and debates, they don’t get a real grasp on what the issues are that people really care about.”

What voters care about, Coolidge believes, is fiscal oversight and responsibility, and he promises to “be informed about all of the issues and ask the tough questions.” Coolidge paints a bleak—but improving—picture of the city’s finances, noting Chico needs to focus spending on essentials and programs with a payout instead of quality-of-life issues.

“I’d love to do more bike lanes, I’d love to do all that other stuff, but right now I just want to get the city moving ahead,” he said.

Some planks in Coolidge’s campaign he wants to tackle in 2015 are the city’s adoption of the Chico Green Growth Program, a 30-year program (designed by Chevron) to update old infrastructure with more modern technology. He also wants the city to take another look at its tax-sharing agreement with the North Valley Plaza, and streamline its planning and permitting process, which he said suffers from a 10-week backlog that

It would be easy to type Reanette Fillmer as a political ingénue. After all, the newly elected City Council member, a Chico native, has never served on a city board or commission or worked on a political campaign other than her own.

But it would be a mistake to think Fillmer doesn’t know what she’s doing, especially when it comes to human relations. Now 44 years old, she’s been in that field since she became HR manager in a Sacramento Target store at the tender age of 22. Later, she worked in HR for Butte Community Bank, for the Sacramento Superior Court for three years, and as HR director for Tehama County beginning in 2008 and ending when she left in 2012 to form her own business in Chico, Argus HR Solutions.

Along the way, while employed full time, she managed to graduate from Sacramento City College and then Chico State. She’s never married and has no children, however. “I was too careerdriven, I guess,” she said during a recent interview.

This varied background—in business, government and the courts—no doubt will serve her well during her tenure on the City Council. It also doesn’t hurt that she’s an articulate woman whose drive is balanced by a warm presence and a disarming smile. And she has a curious mind, as evidenced by the fact that she is currently reading Malcolm Gladwell’s best-selling book about social change, The Tipping Point.

She intends to put her HR background to good use on the council, beginning with an effort to increase police staffing by developing a recruitment

Coolidge said addressing these systemic problems can leave more money for important things like public safety, which he said is the No. 1 issue in Chico: “I hope, obviously, our transient problem and law enforcement levels are solved, or at least moving toward that,” he said of his vision for 2015. “I hope within a year we’re talking about putting [resources] back into our traffic [enforcement], about restoring our participation on the local regional drug enforcement. There are things the police office needs to bring back online like a school resource officer. They’re all really important to the community.”

Coolidge is a native of Loma Rica, a small community outside of Marysville, and moved to Chico 20 years ago to attend Chico State.

He said he passed on the typical student experience, instead marrying and starting a public relations firm that eventually led him to drop out of school as the business became successful, though he returned in 2005 to receive a bachelor’s degree in English literature. He still runs the same business, though he’s moved out of PR to focus on events, and currently produces annual home and garden and bridal shows in Chico and Yuba City.

The new councilman said developing the thick skin necessary for public service has been one of his biggest challenges, but said he thinks he’s up to the task.

“We have to market Chico as a recovering city,” she insisted.

Fillmer also wants to develop a comprehensive compensation study of police staffing, one that “compares apples to apples, not apples to oranges. … When I look at average salaries [in other cities], we are not as high as people say we are.”

In the meantime, the city needs to help Interim Police Chief Mike Dunbaugh with recruitment. She said Chico can’t afford to hold off on hiring for the six months it will take to find a replacement for retired Chief Kirk Trostle.

She also wants to maintain a police presence downtown and develop a plan for handling the traveling homeless who will be returning in the spring. A collaborative approach is needed, one involving the county as well as current programs such as the Downtown Ambassadors.

As a business owner, she knows how important it is for the council to support local businesses. She’s eager to do what she can to speed up the city’s permitting process. “It’s a productivity issue,” she said. “Employees need to be more empowered to be more responsive.”

She hopes that the redirection of the City Council following the recent elections indicates that Chico has reached its own tipping point, and she promises to be “an innovative, outside-the-box thinker” on the council.

New market manager nAtAlie CArter In November, Natalie Carter was named general manager of the Chico Certified Farmers’ Market, which is best known for its Saturday setup in the city parking lot at Second and Wall streets, and where for the past 21 years local growers have sold their produce and other handmade items to thousands of customers.

Prior to taking that post, she served in various other roles at CCFM, including business manager.

For the past couple of years, Carter—who’s a farmer herself—has been witness to the uncertainty of the event’s future, as it faced pressure to move from the city-owned parking lot. Critics said its location in downtown was inappropriate, taking up too many parking spaces and thus discouraging shopping at nearby businesses.

That pressure eased in June when the Chico City Council, after years of debate and political wrangling, voted to give the market an initial six-year franchise agreement that began on Jan. 1. The council also voted to allow the market to expand on-site. After that deal expires, a new eight-year contract will be put before the voters in the general election.

As new general manager, Carter will be front and center during this new era for the longtime event.

“I think, obviously, the market is going through a big change right now and so a lot of my focus is on trying to find new ways for us to get involved with our community,” she said. “The expansion is probably going to happen in spring.”

The new franchise agreement gives the market control over the entire lot, from sidewalk to sidewalk. Even so, she said, initial

plans call for expansion only into the parking aisle that runs along Third Street.

“One of the main reasons [for the expansion] is because we have a lot of vendors at the market currently who want more space,” she said. “We are really at capacity with the footprint we’ve been using and so that will give vendors who are using maybe one stall space to be able to use 1 1/2 or maybe two spaces.”

Among her responsibilities is communicating with the market’s 150 members.

Carter, who moved to Chico while she was in kindergarten, attended both Chico Junior High and Chico High School before earning a degree in biology from Chico State. She is also a member of the Chico Natural Foods Co-op’s board of directors.

She and her mother, Cheri Wolf, have a produce farm in southwest Chico, where they grow crops such as popcorn, arava melons, edamame, multicolored bell peppers and fingerling potatoes. There, and at the CCFM’s downtown office or at the market itself, Carter is regularly accompanied by her 1-year-old daughter, Aria.

“Local food is my thing, I guess,” she said.

“I’m pretty dedicated to the Chico community and I look for as many ways as I can to get involved.”

Carter said new vendors will be brought in and a community area with tables and chairs will be established to allow customers to eat food prepared at the market.

“We don’t want to see a mom and her kid sitting on the curb eating tamales,” she said.

“We’re also hoping to have local restaurants with guest chef demonstrations and other community-themed booths. I’m really looking forward to improving our connection with the Ω community.”

The singer, songwriter and guitarist is most familiar to people as one of the members of bluegrass favorites Nickel Creek, and to a lesser degree as one half of the indie-folk duo Fiction Family, which pairs him with Switchfoot singer Jon Foreman. But it took him much of his 25-year career— whether solo or as a part of the aforementioned bands—to get to a point where he could make a record like All I Do Is Lie, 20 CN&R January 8, 2015

which is deeply personal and yet sees Watkins at his most confident.

“Once I got to my early 30s, I started writing songs that I felt a lot more comfortable with,” said Watkins (now 37). “I felt like I was ready to put my name on something I wasn’t ashamed to write about.”

And the confidence he now feels comes as a result of choosing to go his own way, creatively, rather than trying to do something in response to others’ expectations.

“My first few solo records were a way for me to get ideas out apart from Nickel Creek, to experiment with electric instruments,” Watkins said. His last solo record, Blinders On, came out in 2006. “It was a bit more reactionary. And the reason I’m excited about this record is it’s not that way at all. I just wanted to do something that was purely me and do a record of songs that represent who I am, versus reacting to what band I’m in.”

The 10 songs on the album run the gamut of emotions and feature Watkins at his most honest and conversational. The Americana ditty “Since the Day I Was Born” details the painful unraveling of a lifelong friendship, while the swelling country-folk track “The God You Serve” insightfully examines the push and pull of faith and how it is viewed in light of what people see in the lives of other Christians.

The title track, however, proved to be the most difficult for Watkins, and not just because of its unswerving self-examination of Watkins and his foibles. It’s the only song on the album on which he wasn’t able to sing and play his guitar simultaneously.

“When I wrote it, I had this idea for this fast, looping, finger-picking guitar thing that was in 7/8 time, but it was just really hard to play and sing at the same time then,” he confesses. “But I’ll be onpoint for the shows.”

So, again, it was all about time.

Watkins has learned how to step out of the shadows and be confident in his ability to lead, not just support, a project; he has taken the time to craft a solid record that is arguably his most authentic work to date; and he has managed to meet the challenge of writing difficult songs headon, which is something he could not do before.

“I wanted to get to that point where I thought, ‘maybe this is too personal,’ because I think that’s when you start writing good stuff,” Watkins said. “In the past when I wrote something I thought would be too hard to sing about, I would just cloak it and make it a really cryptic song.

But with a lot of these songs, once I felt like I got to something that I felt ‘maybe this is too much,’ I would just lean into it and do more of that.” Ω

he end of one year, the beginning of another. It’s all Tsomething arbitrary but that’s what humans excel at—making out of nothing. So when you’re staring down

the eggs, peanut butter, bag of pasta and a open bottles of champagne (all that’s left in the by fridge and pantry after weeks of Matthew relying on festive feasts), call upon Craggs that same ingenuity to whip up a little something from the nothing.

Whether you’re still hollering, “Happy New Year,” are heading back to work, or are in a state where you’re not sure what year it is, you still have to eat.

Eggs

Happy New Year! Omelet party! Heat a pan over medium-high heat, coat with cooking spray or a pad of butter. Scramble two eggs in a bowl with salt and pepper and pour into pan, swirling to coat pan. Lower heat to medium-low. Cook, gently shaking occasionally. When the surface looks dry, place cheese and fillings over half of the omelet and gently fold over the opposite side to cover fillings. Cook until cheese melts. For fillings, scrounge around for what remains: mushrooms, peppers, spinach, any cheese or meats.

Have fun and experiment.

Back to work. Fry ’em up. Break eggs into hot pan, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Flip when egg whites are solid and cook for half-a-minute longer for eggs over easy. Plenty of fat, cholesterol and carbs to get you on the mend and through the work day.

What year is it? Stay scrambled. Heat a pot or pan. Break eggs in a bowl, smack around with a fork.

Pour into hot pan. Stir until they become scrambled eggs. Don’t eat the shells.

Peanut Butter

Happy New Year! Peanut sauce makes any dish spectacular. To a half-cup peanut butter add 3 teaspoons each soy sauce and water. Add any combination of chili-garlic paste, sesame oil, sugar and lime juice to taste. Drizzle the peanut sauce over stir-fried veggies and white rice. Thin the sauce with water or oil and dress a spinach salad with cucumbers, carrots and cabbage.

Back to work. Mock peanut butter and banana ice cream, anyone? Freeze four ripe, sliced bananas, one to two hours. Blend frozen bananas in a blender until creamy and smooth. Add 2 tablespoons peanut butter,

puree to combine. Serve immediately—why wait?

In a blender, combine your green (basil, cilantro, spinach, cooked broccoli, Brussels sprouts, anything green), chopped nuts (walnuts, pine nuts or even almonds or sunflower seeds in a pinch), and grated dry, hard cheese (romano, parmesan). Puree until combined; gradually add oil (preferably olive) until desired consistency. Toss with pasta and any leftovers you didn’t use in your omelet.

Back to work. The New Year’s resolutions can wait. Buff up a salad by skipping the lettuce and substituting with cold, cooked pasta. Top pasta with traditional salad ingredients and an oil-based dressing— olive oil and balsamic, oil and lemon juice, add dry herbs. Try a garden pasta salad with any combination of diced tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion and broccoli.

Go Greek with feta, dill, red onions and olives. Use orzo or chop the pasta and combine with dried cranberries, toasted walnuts and crumbled blue cheese.

What Year Is It? Boil until soft enough for a toothless baby. Feeling brave? Toss in butter, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

Champagne

Happy New Year! Just because the bubbly has gone flat doesn’t mean the party’s over. Combine 1 cup leftover champagne, a half-cup water, one-third cup sugar, two strips orange peel, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, two cloves and a cinnamon stick and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring often, until thick, approximately 13 minutes. Let cool, drizzle over fruit, and enjoy how absolutely perfect your life will be in 2015.

Back to work. Who’s to say it isn’t a good idea to fill your water bottle with a mimosa before work and take a sip every time someone overzealously wishes you a “Happy New Year!” or Billy from accounting turns the Time Square ball drop into a sexual innuendo, again? (Seriously, how has he avoided getting fired?) Here’s to another year of the same ol’ same ol’.

Fifty Shades of Grey (Feb. 13): If you are excited about this adaptation of the erotic novel, I weep for you and the souls of your present and future children.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (Feb. 20): If you are excited about this sans-John Cusack sequel, well, you are excused. It does look pretty funny.

Chappie (March 6): Neill Blomkamp (District 9) makes a movie about a kidnapped robot starring Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver. I would much rather see that Alien 5 thing he was supposedly working on.

Zombeavers (March 20): This is a film about zombie beavers. I don’t think it is getting a major release, but it does exist and will appear somewhere on this date. I just had to mention it.

Furious 7 (April 3): I’m thinking some cars drive around really fast and stuff in this one.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1): Super mega summer movie season basically kicks off with the second Avengers movie. This one has Steff from Pretty in Pink (James Spader) voicing the evil title character.

Mad Max: Fury Road (May 15): After many false starts and jettisoning Mel Gibson, George Miller brings his iconic character back with Tom Hardy in the big role and Charlize Theron sporting a shaved head.

Entourage (June 5): I went through an Entourage phase. It ended well before Sasha Grey joined the cast.

Jurassic World (June 12): Judging by the trailer, this looks awful. Like, really awful. Domesticated raptors running alongside Chris Pratt’s motorcycle?

What are they thinking?

Inside Out (June 19) and The Good Dinosaur (Nov. 25): These would be the two Pixar movies you are getting in 2015. Feel blessed. Feel very blessed.

Terminator Genisys (July 1): Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has returned from his stint as governor to become box-office poison, looks to turn things around by returning to the franchise that made his career. It could be shitty, but it definitely looks better than that Jurassic Park sequel.

Ant-Man (July 17): Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) was supposed to direct Paul Rudd in this latest from the Marvel Comics secondary core. I say again, Edgar Wright was supposed to direct this. He is not directing anymore. I am worried.

Pixels (July 24): Adam Sandler and other nerds are hired to fight ’80s-era video game villains (Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, etc.) attacking New York City. This has to be one of the greatest films ever made. I’m not being sarcastic.

Vacation (Oct. 9): So far, this Vacation reboot is still being called just Vacation. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo return, but this one is more about a grown up Rusty (Ed Helms) taking his family on a trip. It all seems kind of farty.

Spectre (Nov. 6): James Bond returns with both Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes still in place from the last installment.

The Peanuts Movie (Nov. 6): Hey, look, it’s a Peanuts movie right before the holiday season kicks off. Charlie Brown gets a CGI-updated look, and it seems like they’ve done a good job nailing the voices. I’m of the generation that appreciates this sort of thing and I will be there, York Peppermint Patties in hand.

The Hateful Eight (Nov. 13): Quentin Tarantino doing another western. I thought Django Unchained was his weakest movie, but I do cherish the idea of Tarantino going wild in the West again.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (Nov. 20): The games come to a conclusion, and Jennifer Lawrence gets freed up to do other things. Rumor has it she wants to be a Ghostbuster.

Midnight Special (Nov. 25): Jeff Nichols, the man who gave us Mud and Take Shelter, returns with Michael Shannon as a dad who discovers his son has special powers.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Dec. 18): In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new Star Wars on the horizon and J.J. Abrams, the man who made Star Trek cool again, is at the helm. Harrison Ford, Han Solo.

What begins as a claustrophobic sea monster tale at the bottom of the ocean ends with (in a spoilerfree spirit) a legend much more grand. In this collection of Vertigo’s 10-issue series, author Scott Snyder (currently doing amazing things with DC’s The New 52 Batman) bounces between tense, restrictive moments among individuals and wide-open, monumental landscapes and events affecting the human race. The storytelling mirrors and questions how legends from the past and the present intermingle to form a history that begets more legends and realities in an endless cycle. At times confusing as the mystery unfolds, The Wake is nonetheless a gripping page-turner with Punk Rock Jesus-creator Sean Murphy’s art capturing the broad scope or isolation inherent in each panel. Murphy’s sea creatures, formed with jagged lines and sharp edges, manage to seem fluid on the page, combining slippery agility with razor-sharp danger—an underwater nightmare that’d have the Creature from the Black Lagoon swimming for shore. The Wake is a deluge of ambitious ideas that occasionally drowns the human element as it forms its own legend, but in the wake of time, it’s the legends and monsters we remember.

Old 97’s Omnivore Recordings It was a different world when the Old 97’s released their debut in 1994. The Internet was barely a thing. OJ was on TV running from Johnny Law. And grunge was sweeping the alternative nation. After a failed attempt at being another Nirvana, bassist Murry Hammond and a young songwriter named Rhett Miller stuck to their Dallas, Texas, roots and formed the Old 97’s with drummer Philip Peeples and guitarist Ken Bethea. Hitchhike to Rhome is a country album with hooks and lyrics from a kid who read books. It’s a combo these freaks and geeks would perfect on their followup Wreck Your Life, but HtR is a raw snapshot of a band with more to offer than the typical alt-country fare. Elmore Leonard and Abbie Hoffman references sidle up next to Bill Monroe and Merle Haggard covers. And unlike some of the straight playing found on Uncle Tupelo and Whiskeytown records, Hitchhike to Rhome’s punk-rock energy crackles from the speakers. This deluxe reissue includes demos of songs, some of which would appear on later records (the excellent “Ivy” wasn’t officially recorded until 2011’s The Grand Theatre, Vol. 2).

It shows how consistent the Old 97’s have been over the course of two decades—these hitchhikers were cruising all along.

MUSIC

The Strange Library Haruki Murakami Alfred A. Knopf The Strange Library, from famed Japanese author Haruki Murakami (A Wild Sheep Chase and 1Q84), is an illustrated novella about an obedient child, a library “even more hushed than usual,” and its odd inhabitants who seek to feed the trapped boy knowledge. It’s a genuinely creepy tale that leaves the reader unsettled. Translated by Ted Goossen, the book makes its English publication debut as a revision of Murakami’s 1982 novella, Toshokan kitan. By foregoing lore, backstories and endless descriptions, Murakami keeps the reader in the moment as the scared but willing child descends deeper into the increasingly terrifying library.

The bare-bones descriptions of everything from the library’s books and metal doors to the sheep man and a translucent young girl allow the readers’ imaginations to pick up where Murakami leaves off, so that the story seeps in and gets under your skin. The young boy’s journey—what’s taken from him, what he gives up—is a dark, lonely tale filled with symbolism and metaphor, the kind you hope to drain of its wisdom, though. Upon visiting The Strange Library, you may just be too scared to turn the page.

Tommy Lee Jones co-wrote, directed and stars in this film set in 1850s America about a spinster (Hilary Swank) and a grizzled claim jumper (Jones) who form an unlikely partnership while escorting three pioneer women across the country by covered wagon.

The Imitation Game

A historical thriller based on real events in the life of Alan Turing (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), the British scientist who was celebrated for his work in cracking the Nazi’s Enigma Code during WWII, yet was subsequently criminally prosecuted following the war for being a homosexual. Cinemark 14.

Rated PG-13.

Inherent Vice

Dream bigger Unimaginative direction dulls adaptation of fascinating fairytale musical seen a live stage production of Into the Woods, II’mhaven’t but on the basis of Rob Marshall’s movie version, guessing I’d like it quite a bit. Marshall’s movie,

on the other hand, is nothing very special apart from it’s being a proficiently filmed record by of the award-winning musical play Juan-Carlos written by James Lapine and Stephen Selznick Sondheim.

The play’s most distinctive element—its darkly dreamy mashup and intermingling of several well-known fairy tales—is genuinely fascinating, regardless of how, or how well, it’s presented. The movie version, working from Lapine’s own screenplay adaptation, puts that across ably Into the Woods enough, even with Marshall’s rather Starring Anna unimaginative direction.

Kendrick, Meryl The convergence of re-imagined Streep, Johnny versions of Cinderella, Little Red Depp and Chris Pine. Directed by Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rob Marshall. Rapunzel, etc., might have been the Cinemark 14, occasion for a fresh approach to Feather River movie fantasy. It’s tempting to ponCinemas and der what a director with more appoParadise Cinema 7. Rated PG. site skills and inclinations—Neil Jordan, Wes Anderson, Jane Campion—might have done with this material. But the Disney logo and the PG rating seem signs that there never really was much hope that we’d get anything other than what we’re getting here.

What we do get includes a reasonably good cast: one true star (Meryl Streep) and a couple of others (Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick) who may be truly on the rise, a couple of quirky juveniles (Lilla Crawford as Little Red Riding Hood, Daniel Huttlestone as Jack), some marquee names (Christine Baranski, Tracey Ullman) in smaller roles, ostensible male leads (James Corden, Chris Pine, Billy Magnussen) doing journeyman duty as unheroic, more-lunkthan-hunk princely types, and one bonkers, scenestealing cameo (Johnny Depp’s Big Bad Wolf, a wolfish human disguised as a cat wearing hipster threads and a fox’s tail).

The cast is never less than adequate to the song

and dance stuff, but the mediocrity of the male leads’ work dulls key aspects of the production; the female leads, by contrast, are much more attuned to the libretto’s mixture of wonder-tale mystery and modern, revisionist irony. Streep is the heart of the matter in the Witch role. She’s the central embodiment of the play’s ambivalent fantasies, and the most nuanced and compelling of the movie’s voices, singing and speaking alike.

Kendrick, the story’s Cinderella, exudes princess potential but also has just enough scrappy toughness to make her credibly adverse to the vacuous entitlements sought by her über-blonde stepsisters.

Blunt (the Baker’s Wife), she of the soft beauty and baleful gaze, might be the most perfect instance of passionate sentiment and romantic sorrow in the entire film. Ω

DMZ meets TMZ The Interview

If The Interview is satire, it’s “satire” of an eminently

complacent sort. Inside its comic/satiric bubble, there’s almost no real-world sense: everything is fictional, including starvation, the CIA, nuclear threats, North Korea itself. Seth Rogen and James Franco look like a couple of schoolboy clowns, funny only in terms of their own very lucrative niche, but really doing little more than fart jokes on a big-bucks scale. The Kim Jong-un angle is essential to this picture’s prankish mentality, but it has ended up distracting attention from the film’s efforts at both mocking and mimicking American’s trash-addled mass media.

Maybe its main accomplishment is also its most dubious: even before audiences got the chance to see it, the clamor surrounding the film’s release managed to make nearly everyone who was even remotely involved look bad or ridiculous or selfdeceiving, even if only for a moment. Ω

Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, There Will Be Blood ) is the first director to get a crack at adapting a Thomas Pynchon book—his 2009 novel centered on a drug-addled detective (Joaquin Phoenix) working a missingperson case in groovy, grimy 1970s Los Angeles. Cinemark 14. Rated R.

The Gambler

Mark Wahlberg has the title role in this remake (it was James Caan in the 1970s original), and he’s an apt choice for the part, but this is not the kind of tale that has him waving big guns around, figuratively or literally.

The new version’s screenplay by William Monahan (The Departed) seems hamstrung by the eccentricities that were crucial to the original (screenplay by maverick writer/director James Toback). The title character in both is James Bennett, an English prof who also has an elaborate and extremely reckless addiction to gambling.

Toback’s quasi-autobiographical fascination with the existentialist “literature of extremes” leaves its mark on both films. The new version’s misfortunes reside partly in its failures with the gambling sequences, which are briskly staged and almost completely lacking in any real dramatic interest or credibility. The Wahlberg character’s classroom scenes, by contrast, come to life as a nutty sort of semi-fantastic dark comedy, while also throwing some moderately articulate light on his peculiar sense of personal mission. Wild

Reese Witherspoon delivers a tough, smart performance in what for her is a somewhat atypical role. Jean-Marc Vallée’s film version of Cheryl Strayed’s memoir of her transformative adventure in the wilderness holds her star power at something like arm’s length and builds a close-up sense of its protagonist through a combination of cinematic elements, including flashes of a kind of stream-of-consciousness editing. Even in the occasional emotional eruption, Witherspoon maintains a calm intensity, and Vallée’s film matches that with the cool, rough beauty of its cinematography. Here the central characterization is a matter not only of what she says and does and sees, but also of the tentatively implied insights of those memory flashes and other fleeting associations. Much of the film is a straight-ahead account of the physical challenges of Cheryl’s arduous journey, with her spiritual revitalization portrayed partly through the cumulative effect of small, quietly telling moments and partly through deceptively casual gradations in Witherspoon’s performance. Coin (Julianne Moore) wants to use the reluctant Katniss as a propaganda tool to inspire the masses against the Capitol and its evil leader, President Snow (Donald Sutherland).

Katniss is getting a little grouchy at this point, exacerbated by the fact that Snow has imprisoned Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and is using him as a propaganda tool as well. In exchange for their help in rescuing Peeta, Katniss agrees to assist with the resistance and be their “Mockingjay.” Part 1 is obviously the result of taking the final novel in the popular Suzanne Collins series and splitting it in half. Yes, more movies equal more dollars, but I certainly didn’t feel like the material was being stretched out in a detrimental way like, say, what’s happening with the Hobbit movies. This film has plenty moving it forward, and I like where it ends. Cinemark 14.

… when it comes to really experiencing noise, I look for something more—I want contrast. I want to see the spotless pane of glass, then the brick flying through it.

I know a lot of people hate mimes, but I have to admit they’ve kind of grown on me. (There are way worse ways by which to annoy your fellow humans in public—I mean, it’s not like they’re starting drum circles or anything.)

You would be hard-pressed to find a person as universally loved in this community as Dan Tomassini. The longtime Chico musician and actor died last week (March 11), and his passing has left a serious mark on our little scene. … the most poignant moment came at the end of actor/comedian Steve Swim’s standup skit. Picking out the song on an out-oftune acoustic guitar, Swim coughed out a short version of Pink Floyd’s gentle love note to Syd Barrett. As he went into the last chorus, the crowd very quietly joined in, sending a delicate chorus for Tomassini into the night: “How I wish, how I wish you were here.”

I don’t know, man. Most of the time, I am in favor of rock bands burning out over fading away, but if a band is actively stoking a roaring fire, I say let the muthafucka burn!

Anyone who complains about music “these days” is out of their freaking minds.

The observatory’s mission is “to provide access to our universe,” and for years, [Anita] Ingrao was the one opening the door and showing Chico in. She was our outer-space docent, inspiring kids and making kids out of adults, inviting us with her big, infectious smile to be curious about what is beyond our tiny pale-blue dot, and, as she put it in a note posted to the observatory’s Facebook page during her final days: “Keep looking up in wonder.”

I know better than to take on any of our local funnymen. I am not ashamed to admit that my ego is not strong enough. Comedians have the ability to see into the dark spots we try to keep hidden and then bring that shit back into the light for us all to laugh at forever.

[Craig Blamer] is calling it The Barn, which is a nod to that famous (and likely apocryphal) line that supposedly came from one of the old Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland flicks: “Hey, my uncle has a barn. Let’s put on a show!”

Whatever the quote’s origin, it’s such a romantic idea that I could almost burst. … the discussion turned toward the age-old question of whether being a musician was an economically viable career choice in Chico. (Short answer: maybe, but probably not.)

LOVE’S REAL ESTATE Glass Breaker I’ve broken more glass than anyone I know. I have left a trail of shattered and broken windows, bottles, glasses, plates, bowls, light fixtures, and miscellaneous statues, figurines, vases - some quite valuable- even a couple of windshields and skylights. But by far my most frequent glass victims have been windows. Windows always seem to be in the path of objects thrown, kicked, dropped, batted, flung, or otherwise generated by me.

But I was shocked when I ran into this house, late for my open house, slammed the front door behind me, and slipped on a carpet runner. My keys slipped from my hand, flew across the room and slammed into the living room window. I was shocked because the window did not break. The keys dropped to the floor harmlessly. It made no sense. I have broken windows with the mere flip of a pebble, the tap of a knuckle, much less the hurling of a mass of metal such as my key ring.

This was encouraging; perhaps it represented a new trend. Perhaps it could mean the start of a new relationship with glass!

But alas, my hopes were dashed when I turned around and saw a crack traversing the front door glass. That made more sense: a simple slamming of the door by my hands translates into broken glass.

As a life-long glass-breaker, I knew what to do; I went into fix-it mode.

I greeted my open house visitors as I scraped out putty, removed old glass, and measured for new glass. I called The Glass Man (“He’ll fix it fast, man,” said the radio ad); he delivered the new pane of glass, putty, glazing points, and putty knife.

One guy, at the open house with his kid, said, “You’re either a well-dressed handyman, or you broke a window.”

“You’re right in both cases,” I said.

The guy let his kid help me roll the putty into worm-like lengths between the palms of our hands. I stuck them to the edges of the newly placed glass. I let the kid spit on the putty knife; then I drew it smoothly and firmly along the glass edges shaping the putty into a nice bevel with clean corners.

I’ve heard it said if you break glass accidentally, you’ll have good luck. As it went, that guy with his kid bought that house, and they became my long-time friends and clients.

Maybe being a life-long glass-breaker isn’t such a bad thing.
