also in the heart of this breadbasket of America. Residents of the North State are, quite literally, surrounded by things to eat. On the outskirts of town, orchardists work to provide the U.S. with such crops as almonds, walnuts and olives, while other farmers tend to various row crops, including tomatoes, beans and peas. In the foothills, cattle and sheep graze in pastures.

We may have to shop at small grocers and farmers’ markets to get the very freshest of this bounty, but several of the large supermarkets also carry a selection of local fruits and vegetables. Travel almost anywhere else in the U.S. and you’ll see a dearth of variety and quality of produce. In short, we’re extremely fortunate to have such easy access to both delicious and healthy food.

In this, our second annual Farm to Table issue, we’ve highlighted just a few of the folks who are contributing to the local food movement. There are countless others who deserve praise, and we want to thank them for their dedication to agriculture. We want to pay special thanks to the little guys—the ones who work the hardest and connect personally with their customers.

We also are grateful that our local university, Chico State, runs a College of Agriculture, educating farmers and ranchers of the future on the best practices of this industry. Indeed, preparing these students to enter the workforce is crucial to the state’s economic vitality. Given that the average age of a U.S. farmer is 58 years old, educating young people in this field has never been as important as it is today.

So, the next time you’re at a farmers’ market, or you meet someone who grows food, give them your thanks. Ω

Compromise is key The recent discussion about placing banners depicting Chico’s active-duty

military members along major roadways throughout town has created quite a stir. Proponents—including those behind the effort, a nonprofit called Chico Military Heroes—label them patriotic; those opposed argue they’re garish and glorify war. It’s an interesting debate that’s created a strange divide, one that clearly made the City Council uncomfortable (members punted it to Internal Affairs). And we can certainly understand why—we, too, are conflicted on the matter.

We find it particularly worth noting that several veterans have come out opposing the idea. Robert Trausch, a Marine veteran, spoke before the Internal Affairs Committee Sept. 10 and argued that the banners, while a nice gesture toward thanking our active military members, were not an appropriate way to welcome them home. We agree. The money spent to create the large signs, each of which would include a photo of an activeduty member along with his or her name and military branch, could be better spent on services to help them find jobs and other resources upon their return.

The folks who are part of Chico Military Heroes have their hearts in the right place. They want to honor the men and women who are risking their lives to protect our way of life. But these banners, especially placed throughout neighborhoods year-round, are not the right way to go about it.

To display them 365 days a year, we’d suggest the group do so at private venue, such as the Elk’s Lodge.

There’s a good alternative on the table, however: Councilwoman (and Internal Affairs Committee member) Ann Schwab’s thoughtful compromise of hanging the signs in a limited location—along the mostly commercial East Avenue—and for only 30 days out of the year, similar to the Earth Day flags flown in April. We’re with Schwab and we hope the rest of the council follows suit. Ω

Advocacy and pets As a journalist, I try to remain somewhat detached from the stories we print in our pages. This can be difficult at times—when the subject of a story needs help, for instance. That was the case with last week’s cover story, “Collateral damage,” in which Chicoan Kari Keith, ex-wife of kidnapper and rapist Lonnie Scott Keith, opened up about her marriage to a person she eventually learned was a monster.

I was hoping that by sharing her story here, someone in the community might step forward to offer pro-bono counseling services to Keith and her children, who are struggling financially and cannot afford private therapy.

That happened this week. A reader who’s a psychologist asked me to pass on her contact info to Keith. It made me proud to live in a community where generosity is displayed regularly and to work in a profession where storytelling leads to advocacy.

It also shows the power of print media. The help came as a direct result of that CN&R piece, the good work of author Debra Lucero.

Speaking of advocacy, if you’ve read this column over the last year and a half, you know that I’m an animal lover.

I’ve written a little bit about being a horsewoman and also about my late beloved German shepherd. I can’t recall if I’ve mentioned growing up with cats and parakeets, or that I had a pet snake and lizards at one point.

In any case, I want to note that a couple of my animalloving colleagues, Associate Editor Meredith Graham and News Editor Tom Gascoyne, are lending their bodies to the Butte Humane Society for its annual Bidwell Bark Fun Run & Festival, which takes place at, you guessed it, OneMile at Bidwell Park. Graham and Gascoyne will be sitting above the dunk tank, awaiting your money and throwing arm, at 10:40 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.

The event—which features a couple of foot races, along with raffles, costume contests and other activities—is the local humane society’s main fundraiser of the year. It runs from 8 a.m. to noon. BHS works hard to help place unwanted pets into loving homes.

It’s a wonderful organization that’s worthy of the community’s support.

My husband and I adopted a little scruffy ball of fur— a bichon frisé—a couple of years ago from BHS. Lucy, who came with another name, arrived as a stray. She’d been microchipped at some point, but the folks listed as her family never picked her up. Their loss. Look at this face.

Point and counterpoint Re “Deception and blazing sofas” (Second & Flume, by Melissa Daugherty, Sept. 18): At the end of the column regarding students burning sofas, Melissa Daugherty writes, “But I honestly think the kids are bored. Somebody, please, give them something cool to do. You have a built-in audience.” It’s my responsibility to find something for bored students to do so they won’t burn sofas? This is an example of how ridiculous this society has become. If a student cannot think of something to do besides burning a sofa, their brain is “burned out.”

Let’s start holding people accountable for creating their own “cool things to do” instead of pleading to society to “give them something cool to do.” Stop making excuses for bad behavior and call it what it is. It’s not boredom. Get off your sofa and find something productive to do.

I graduated from Chico State with my master’s in May. I am originally from Wisconsin but moved to California to attend Chico State. I have been living in Chico for a little over two years now. Chico is a great town; people are friendly, the weather is great, the downtown is quaint and has many great shops and restaurants. However, this town caters to families and retirees. There need to be more activities geared toward college-age individuals, and I’m not talking about [downtown bars].

Chico, while great, is also a very bizarre city.

For the size of Chico and the fact that the closest big city is Sacramento, one would think there would be more job opportunities and more room for growth. I come from a town with a population of about 65,000 and it is a very big college community like Chico, but there seems to be more community involvement surrounding college-age individuals.

I’m not sure if this is the answer but I do know that if there isn’t more to do, besides hiking and bicycle riding, and there aren’t more job opportunities, kids will come here to party and after school leave this town far behind.

Fight for the trees

Have you seen the attack on our urban forest in front of Rite Aid on Mangrove, near Vallombrosa? This is an affront to all the efforts of all the citizens who understand and appreciate the energy savings, the pollution mitigation and the shade that those trees provided. To merely ask the property owner to replant some trees, some time is not enough!

The city has over 3,500 empty tree-planting sites.

When a contractor does a project without proper permits, he or she should have to come back, do it right and pay double the permit fees. We need a city ordinance that says you have to plant three times the number of trees you “improperly” cut down within six months and that your parking lot needs to have 50 percent shade in 10 years.

Other cities have better tree protection. Why should we do less?

The citizens of Chico want better tree protection and a healthy and vibrant urban forest.

Re “Aftermath of the collapse” (Greenways, by Howard Hardee, Sept. 18): So, the fate of the magnificent 4,000-acre Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve is being decided by three Chico State administrators.

The university has dozens of professors in its College of Natural Sciences, as well as knowledgeable retired professors, such as Paul Maslin, who could lend their expertise to forging a positive future for this beautiful land.

Instead, people with no understanding of the biological importance of the reserve have halted the wonderful program that brought over a thousand school children there every year to learn firsthand about the natural world. Not only that, but they have limited the research opportunities of the very college students they are supposed to serve. The wrong people are making the wrong decisions, and it doesn’t look good for the reserve.

If you, too, are concerned, please write to Chico State President Paul Zingg and urge him to have the reserve’s fate decided by scientists, not by career administrators.

Recollecting a coin-flip Re “An ‘unsatisfactory’ response” (Newslines, by Howard Hardee, Sept. 18): The debate over the seemingly elastic use of closed sessions to cloak touchy matters takes me back nearly 30 years to a commendable antithesis in Butte County. At the insistence of an administrator who refused to allow the “personnel matter” loophole to be abused on his watch, a small district school board in Oroville took the entire process of a now-forgotten hire completely public—warts and all.

The board’s repeated votes kept finishing in a tie. As news director for KORV Radio, I was clued in with a phone call at some point and showed up with my cassette recorder at the meeting, where the pluses and minuses of applicants A and B were aired out.

Finally, the board came to a decision the only way it knew how—with a coin toss that ended up making national news. I wonder how many similar indecisions before and since have been left hidden thanks to the overly used excuse phrase “personnel matter.”

It’s not anti-Semitic Re “Going beyond a billboard” (Guest comment, by Linda ClarkBorre, Sept. 18): Linda Clark-Borre argues that the now-famous billboard of a wounded Palestinian girl is no substitute for a “give-and-take discussion.” I wonder, who ever said it was? The billboard is decidedly at one end of a dialogue—a dialogue the U.S. pro-Israel lobby has dominated for decades.

Clark-Borre’s references to antiSemitism and the Holocaust insinuate that anyone who protests the Israeli obstruction of Palestinian statehood—and the illegal settlement of Israelis on Palestinian land—is probably anti-Semitic.

Spare me the bullshit. The Holocaust card cannot be played ad infinitum with the expectation that “liberal guilt” will forever suppress debate.

Many dissenting Jews in the U.S. and Israel support the dissemination of “pro-Palestinian” information. Are they all anti-Semitic?

Or, are they simply looking at the issues, stripped of the reverse racism that has come to justify the accountability-free zone now occupied by Israel?

Lastly, Clark-Borre quotes Rumi: “Beyond the ideas of what’s wrong and right, there is a field.”

This is an attempt to bring some kind of fuzzy, mystical legitimacy to the confiscatory agenda of Israel. Any antebellum slave holder would have gladly employed this bit of Sufi “logic”—along with any neo-Nazi seeking a way to rationalize the depravity of Auschwitz.

Oh, the irony Re “The cancer of ISIS” (Editorial, Sept. 11): Beheading men in public is uncivilized. What is civilized is drone-bombing women and children.

It is interesting that they’ve used the acronym ISIS to describe “our” new enemy threat, (created or at least exacerbated by the U.S. occupation of Iraq), considering Isis was the goddess of health and love. It is also compelling that the planet, deemed “Mother” Earth, is being utterly devastated under the current “God the Father” patriarchal paradigm, just as women have been abused, subjugated and devalued under it for thousands of years, more so than any other group of people in his story.

I believe it is important to raise these concerns because under the current masculine-worldviewdominated paradigm, it is possible that neither humans nor any other species on the planet will survive into the next century. This imbalance toward the masculine, dominator worldview has brought about endless wars, famine, environmental degradation, lust for power, greed and a complete lack of foresight. It’s not about blaming men; it’s about creating a much-needed balance of both masculine and feminine ideologies.

Humanity is in dire need of a paradigm shift where feminine characteristics of cooperation, communication, empathy and altruism are valued and respected as equally as those of the masculine. It is not unreasonable to say that our futures desperately depend upon it.

Every time I see one of his signs claiming “He is one of us,” I retch. The only class that he is “one of” is that of millionaire farmers and wealthy that want more from the government and want the middle class and needy to get less. If he had his way, we would have no more Social Security, Medicare or MediCal. Throw the bum out.

Too many transients Re “Blame the media” (Letters, by Alan Chamberlain, Sept. 11): It is no longer “a few” transients sprinkled here and there. I stopped going downtown, except for the Friday Night Concerts at the City Plaza, mainly because of the transients. My husband played in the band at the City Plaza Friday night and I was amazed at the numbers of transients encircling the periphery, waiting to “reclaim their territory” after the audience, band and soundpeople packed up and left.

Don’t hate on me, I can hear a chorus of “but the homeless have rights, too.” I am not in any way unsympathetic to the homeless. I am referring to the “career tweakers,” the ones who refuse to follow the no-drugs policies of the Jesus Center. We need an anti-loitering law and need to enforce it. To do otherwise is enabling bad behavior that isn’t good for anyone, especially the person being enabled.

WATER BOND OPPOSITION

AquAlliance, the local water-activist organization, opposes Proposition 1, the state water bond set for the November ballot according to a press release, which says that while the measure includes some beneficial funding and cost-effective items, it also expands groundwater banking and conjunctive use, which is detrimental regionally. The measure would decrease water recycling projects by 44 percent and does not respond to the ongoing drought, the release charges.

“If we are to protect the North State from the state and federal habit of taking water from healthy watersheds that leave them devastated, then water recycling, conservation, and reclamation are exactly what California needs most,” it reads.

AquAlliance Executive Director Barbara Vlamis said expanding the extraction of North State groundwater to the south is a matter that crosses political party lines locally, but unfortunately details of the bond are not widely understood.

ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING SPREE

A woman was arrested in downtown Chico on Monday (Sept. 22) for allegedly trying to abduct two children from their strollers.

Chico police responded to a report of a possible domestic dispute at the Chico City Plaza around 10 a.m., finding that 44-yearold Rebecca Ware of Chico had allegedly attempted to “forcibly take a child” from a woman on the 300 block of Broadway Street, according to a Chico Police Department press release. The parent pulled the stroller away and reportedly “got into a physical confrontation” with Ware.

Ware then allegedly tried to take another child from a stroller near the corner of Third and Flume streets. In that case, the parent “was assisted by an alert citizen, who physically took Ware to the ground.”

Both parents and children were uninjured. Ware was arrested on a charge of attempted kidnapping and booked in Butte County Jail.

WOMEN’S DEATHS COMMEMORATED

The one-year anniversaries of the unrelated deaths of two young Chico women were commemorated separately on Monday (Sept. 22).

Family, friends and supporters of Kristina Chesterman (pictured), a 21-year-old Chico State nursing student who was struck and killed while cycling home, gathered at Chico State and walked to the Nord Avenue bridge where she was hit by drunken motorist Riley Hoover.

Breanne Sharpe’s supporters gathered at the spot on East Eighth Street where police officers shot and killed the 19-year-old after—according to police—she wheeled a stolen car toward them.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey declared Sharpe’s shooting justified on Oct. 3, 2013. Sharpe’s mother, Mindy Losee, used the anniversary of her death to file a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city of Chico and the officers involved in the shooting.

“It’s kind of hard to feel bad for the homeless when you see this,” Athey said, gesturing to the trail of refuse leading into the channel. “This is just disgusting.”

Every year at the end of summer, the community removes litter from Chico’s waterways before the rains come and wash it downstream.

From an environmental perspective, that effort has never been more important—because the creeks have never been so trashed.

About 450 volunteers for BEC’s cleanup pulled an estimated 40,000 pounds, or 20 tons, of waste from the creeks—compared to 16,900 pounds last year and 5,164 pounds in 2012, said Robyn DiFalco, BEC’s executive director. The environmental organization has been recording

the trash totals since 1987; the previous record was set in 2002, when 23,000 pounds of garbage were removed from Chico’s waterways.

“The numbers are shocking, but if you’ve seen what’s been going on in our creeks, it’s not shocking at all,” DiFalco said by phone. “What we collected, some of it was incidental waste, people mindlessly throwing away a bottle or cigarette butt. A lot of it, though, is because people are living on our greenways. They don’t have anywhere else to go.”

It was clear to those who were involved with the cleanup, and likely anyone who’s recently taken a creekside stroll, that the main source of the garbage is homeless encampments.

On the Wednesday before the cleanup (Sept. 17), park rangers and police officers traversed Chico’s waterways to issue what were essentially eviction notices. Homeless people were given 72 hours to gather their belongings and move along, so volunteers would be unhindered during the cleanup.

Notices were served to people in about 20 camps that day on Comanche Creek alone, said ranger Lisa Barge, and in camps “under nearly every bridge on Little Chico Creek.” All told, more than

50 illegal camping notices were posted prior to the cleanup.

The camps themselves can be foul, rangers say. It’s common to find materials used for making methamphetamine, and other items such as broken glass, buckets of paint, rotten meat, human feces, syringes and clothing detergent in or near waterways. The implications for local aquatic ecosystems and those downstream are serious. And that’s without mentioning the degradation due to illegal campers clearing vegetation, cutting down trees for shelter and starting fires along tinder-dry creek beds.

“It has a huge impact on the creek habitats,” DiFalco said. “We do have wildlife trying to live there.”

“Environmental degradation is everywhere out there,” Barge echoed. “That’s a given.”

The CN&R explored Lindo Channel early on

the morning of cleanup day, during the brief window of time where homeless people had vacated their camps but the belongings they left behind remained untouched.

In one camp, hidden by a dense thicket directly behind S&S Produce and Natural Foods, clothing, sleeping bags

and bedding were strewn about with seemingly nonessential items—ski boot bindings, Glamour magazine, a children’s bicycle frame and a boombox.

It was a familiar scene to senior park ranger Shane Romain, who is frequently surprised by the objects found at homeless camps.

“I ask questions like, ‘Why do you need all this stuff?’ If I was living outside, I would have the essentials, stuff I could carry on my back,” he said. “There are some individuals with mental illness who have hoarding tendencies. They just bring in more and more stuff.”

Any items valued more than $100 were processed by the Chico Police Department. Otherwise, it all went to landfill or was recycled.

While the number of homeless camps has

increased dramatically, the city is illprepared to do anything about it. Budget cuts and staff reductions have limited the capacity of both the police department and park rangers to roust the homeless from creek banks.

In the past, they made weekly rounds.

Now, with only two full-time rangers and one part-time ranger on staff, “the goal is once a month,” Romain said. (A seasonal park ranger position was eliminated last July.)

Entering the camps has become increasingly dangerous, he said, as many of the inhabitants are armed, and ensuring the safety of the rangers presents limitations. Romain won’t enter a homeless camp without the company of a fellow ranger or a police officer, but it’s rare for two rangers to be on during the same shift. “And the likelihood of getting a cover unit from police … it’s probably not going to happen, because they don’t have the staff,” he said.

Even when those stars align, the effort often is futile. “As soon as we clean up, those camps are back,” Romain said.

He questioned the effectiveness of writing tickets for illegal camping or arresting homeless people with outstanding warrants in the first place.

“We can write tickets all day long; we can arrest people all day long,” he said.

“Is it going to change any behavior?

Probably not. Is it going to help the person get out of that situation? No. It’s probably just going to make it worse.”

And explaining to homeless people how degrading their camps can be to the surrounding environment is a lost cause, Barge said.

“You’re getting all sorts of folks, from the mentally ill to people who have some sort of criminal record,” she said.

“They’re not thinking in the community sense; they’re in survivalist mode.

They’re living in a pile of trash, and they don’t seem to mind it. Self-actualization just doesn’t happen.” Ω

Butte faces more penalties

Issues tied to football team cause more trouble for community college ast Saturday’s (Sept. 20) 51-6 trouncing of LMateo the Butte College Roadrunners by the San Bulldogs established the football

team’s first losing record (1-2) in eight years, but ongoing off-field issues are arguably of greater concern to the school.

A woman who alleges she was raped by a football player at a 2012 off-campus party has authorized the release of information regarding her complaint to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) regarding the school’s handling of her case. The complaint spurred a still-active investigation by the OCR into how the college manages sexual assault investigations.

Jim McCabe, a Durham-based attorney for San Francisco law firm Morrison & Foerster LLP, represents the woman and said the OCR complaint was filed by his office in February 2013, after an investigation by Director of Student Services Al Renville— who also serves as the school’s Title IX compliance officer—determined the player needn’t be disciplined and was allowed to continue playing football. Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 mandates that schools receiving federal funds must investigate student claims of sexual violence.

The alleged victim filed a police report at the time of the incident, but McCabe said authorities could not gather enough evidence to pursue charges. Title IX requires accusations of sexual violence between students also be investigated by the school.

The woman’s complaint alleges the investigation was insufficient and biased, that the school failed to adequately protect her during the process and that the inquiry did not follow Title IX guidelines. It also asks that Butte designate at least one woman to investigate sexual violence reports, adopt

Title IX-compliant procedures, reimburse the plaintiff for counseling costs and remove Renville from his Title IX duties.

McCabe said the extent of Renville’s inquiry was to question the alleged victim and attacker, four football players present at the party, and a coach who served as a character witness for the accused, but he did not interview the woman’s family or a rape counselor.

He also said Renville refused to view text messages offered as evidence of the assault, alleging the administrator claimed he “could decide these things on his gut.”

McCabe said he was prompted to release the complaint details by a recent flap in which Brandon Banks, who faces felony charges related to a gang rape in Tennessee, appeared on the team’s roster. Banks, who had been expelled from Vanderbilt University over the charges, was subsequently booted from the Butte team Sept. 9 after his legal troubles were made public (see “Fumbling with felonies,” Newslines, Sept. 11).

Renville told the CN&R for that previous story that he’d been consulted by Athletics Director Craig Rigsbee regarding Banks’ academic eligibility while facing sexual assault charges in another state. He said he’d told Rigsbee Banks could attend Butte. He could not be reached for comment for this story.

by Renville telling the CN&R he was “surprised” when the OCR announced in May that Butte College was still under investigation, and said the administrator should have been more aware of the details, as the OCR makes current case information available to both the complainant and the institution under scrutiny.

“If [Renville] was ‘surprised’ [with OCR’s announcement] on May 1, he could have picked up the phone and called on May 2 to find out exactly where the complaint stood.”

Butte College President Kimberly Perry contends this is not the case: “We had requested [a copy] when the complaint was filed in the spring of 2013, and OCR responded it’s not their practice to provide the complaint to institutions.”

Perry said the Butte administration was again denied details this past spring, and that Butte officials learned the full details only when Morrison & Foerster LLP released them on Sept. 22. Phone calls to the state and federal OCR offices regarding their procedures were not returned as of press time.

Perry praised Renville’s Title IX work: “Our priority has always been the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff,” she said. “Al Renville is a longtime Butte College employee and administrator, and he has upheld the finest standard of looking out for the benefit of our students, faculty and staff.”

There’s more to this story. An active Butte

football player—safety Damariay Drew, a former UC Berkeley student and football player—currently faces felony assault charges in Alameda County following a May 4 incident in which he allegedly broke a fellow UC Berkeley student’s jaw and kicked the alleged victim’s dog at a frat house fundraising event. Drew remains indefinitely suspended from playing football at UC Berkeley, according to several news reports.

Perry said she is aware of Drew’s legal status, but that his presence on the team doesn’t violate the school’s Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, which states accused felons may play sports following an investigation into charges by Butte’s athletics director. She also claims it differs from the Banks case because, while Banks was expelled from Vanderbilt, Drew was not permanently banned from UC Berkeley “Our understanding is he will be returning to Cal this spring,” she said.

for three offices—two statewide and one county—took part in a League of Women Voters candidates forum Monday (Sept. 22).

The event, held in the Chico City Council chambers, began with State Senate District 4 candidates CJ Jawahar, a Democrat from Roseville, and incumbent Jim Nielsen, R-Gerber. They were followed by District 3 Assembly candidates Republican James Gallagher and Democrat Jim Reed, while the forum wrapped up with nonpartisan candidates for Butte County assessor, longtime appraiser Diane Brown and county Supervisor Bill Connelly.

Water and climate change were common themes for the state office candidates, while those running for the county office mostly fielded questions from the audience and reporters about what the county assessor does.

Each candidate was given two minutes for an opening statement, followed by a series of questions and ending with two-minute closing statements.

Jawahar began by saying he was thankful to be away from the Roseville area because of the smoke- and ash-filled air generated by the massive King Fire burning east of Sacramento. There are many more fires going on right now than there were at this time last year, Jawahar contended, quickly making known where he stands on a fairly controversial topic.

“With all that, climate change is real. We need to do something about it,” he said. “I used to wonder how our ancestors handled these wildfires. They did not have fire trucks, they did not have helicopters, they did not have fire deterrence. You know what they had? They had water.”

He said the state has been failing over the years to store enough water for “farming, drinking and industrial use and to protect from fires.”

Nielsen, who was elected to the office in 2012, began by recounting that, as a young farmer, he “realized that most of what was affecting my ability to produce and profit as a farmer was government CJ Jawahar, left, and Sen. and what I was doing was complaining about it.”

So, he got involved as a leader in the farming industry, the community and the Republican Party, he said.

“Then I took leave of my senses and ran for state Legislature,” he joked, noting that he’s since “found nothing but frustration along the way.”

Nielsen also said climate change “has been real since there was an Earth. It ebbs and flows over the eons. It didn’t just happen because of human beings.”

Both candidates said they support Proposition 1, the water bond that, if passed, would include the construction of the Sites Reservoir in Colusa County.

But they differed on the subject of marijuana, with Nielsen saying it should be tightly regulated by local communities and Jawahar suggesting the state follow the leads of Colorado and Washington by legalizing recreational use.

In the State Assembly District 3

forum, Republican Gallagher and Democrat Reed are running to replace termed-out Dan Logue, who is running for a congressional seat against incumbent John Garamendi.

Gallagher, an attorney practicing in Yuba City, said he is running to make sure the area has “secure water rights and safe communities where my children can thrive.”

Reed, also an attorney, said he has great respect for scientists and believes that climate change is occurring.

“To me it is undeniable,” he said. “It is occurring and if we don’t do something about it soon, it is going to be cataclysmic.”

Gallagher said the jury is still out on the matter of human-caused climate change and that the debate

should continue.

The candidates both said they support Prop. 1 but differed on the use of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, as a means to extract oil and natural gas reserves from shale rock formations.

Gallagher said fracking has been used for many years in the North State and allows for the harvest of clean energy and reduces the country’s reliance on foreign energy sources.

Reed said he supports Butte County’s efforts to ban fracking and “would encourage every other county in Northern California to do the same. Water is our most precious resource.”

The candidates for county assessor,

Brown and Connelly, for the most part tried to explain what the office does, which is appraise property values that in turn affect property taxes, the major source of revenue for county services like public safety.

Brown pointed to her 30-plus years in the office, working her way up from a typist/clerk to her current position as a principal appraiser.

Connelly said his 10 years as a supervisor qualifies him and overrides the fact he has no experience as a property appraiser. The supervisor’s job, he said, “a position, I might add, that I’d never held before,” puts him in charge of 2,500 county employees.

Connelly said he is running because there have been problems in the office in recent years, including the lagging submission of property tax rolls and rude public relations. Someone from outside the office, he said, would be better at fixing such troubles.

‘Surveillance state’ Ex-CIA analyst discusses government collection of personal information

McGovern was addressing a room full of students, professors and citizens last Thursday (Sept. 18) at Selvester’s Café by the Creek on the Chico State campus. The topic of discussion: government surveillance.

It’s all about the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution, said McGovern, who returned his CIA Intelligence Commendation Medal in 2006 in protest of the agency’s use of torture. In 1978, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act put that amendment, which protects American citizens from “unreasonable searches and seizures,” into context by requiring a court order for wiretapping and other forms of surveillance.

“We would get papers in our inboxes with holes—the names of American citizens—razored out of them,” McGovern recalled from his days working for the CIA. “The [National Security Agency] held so sacred its duty to observe that law.”

After Sept. 11, 2001, however, “everything changed.” The threat and fear of terrorism was enough to throw many civil liberties out the window, McGovern said. Now, the U.S. government collects electronic data from all citizens, mostly from cellphones and computers, and nobody is doing anything to stop it, he added. More infuriating to McGovern is the denial by top officials that any civil liberties are being violated. He showed a YouTube video of former NSA chief Gen. Michael Hayden addressing the National Press Club and stating as fact that the Fourth Amendment does not call for “probable cause” in reasonable searches and seizures.

“He lied,” McGovern said in disbelief.

“We were confronted by a strange rationalization by most Americans,” he continued.

“They said, ‘I’ve got nothing to hide, so it’s not a problem.’ Well, you don’t get to decide what you should be ashamed of. If they [the government] want to get you, they have a very fertile field.”

McGovern added that, while the rationalization for the increased surveillance was to catch terrorists, NSA chief Gen. Keith Alexander testified before Congress that the

surveillance has not stopped a single terrorist attack on U.S. or foreign soil. (This came last October, and contradicted his earlier statement that surveillance had thwarted 54 terrorist attacks.)

Joining McGovern at the event, which was sponsored by Chico State’s Peace Institute and the Chico chapter of the ACLU, were political science professors John Crosby and Michael Coyle. They formed a panel of sorts to offer differing viewpoints on the “surveillance state” we live in.

Crosby took the stance that the Constitution should be considered a “living document” because much of the language used when it was written has different meanings now, and society’s level of sophistication has advanced.

“Is paper the same as email?” he asked.

“Right now it’s not. Email can be searched.”

Crosby also suggested that surveillance can encourage good behavior, since we know we’re constantly being watched.

“The surveillance state is only going to get worse,” he warned. “Now we’re talking about putting cameras on cops—that sounds like a great idea, but what happens when a cop goes into a house? Is that an unreasonable search and seizure?”

Coyle chimed in with a history of surveillance going back to the 1700s.

“What part of your life is not defined by surveillance?” he asked. “The unchecked time of childhood is almost nonexistent.

We’ve developed surveillance in such a way that people are surveilling themselves.”

Ultimately, all three panelists agreed that the surveillance state is a troubling concept.

They urged audience members to speak out, to tell their friends, to elect politicians who value the Fourth Amendment and will fight for it.

“The people who say ‘I’ve got nothing to hide’ are clueless as to how very, very close to getting royally fucked they are,” Coyle said. “They just have to take an interest in you.”

Local growers prosper Small operations like Farmelot in Vina benefit from Buy Fresh Buy Local, which lines supermarket shelves with their produce

hen James Brock bought 15 acres of ag W land in Vina 10 years ago, he envisioned a farm that would be sustainable in all senses

of the word.

“Fifteen acres doesn’t sound like a lot,” he said, “but that’s a lot of land to farm, especially when you’re doing diversified crops.”

His operation basically consists of four people—himself, wife Karla and adult daughter Laura, along with Dr. Bruce Balgooyen—“utilizing regenerative land practices” to grow “heirlooms and old-world varieties” as stated on the website for the venture, called Farmelot.

The farm’s location is great for growing but not for marketing, Brock said. Vina is relatively isolated—not a prime spot for community-supported agriculture, retail or restaurants—so he needs to look outward to sell produce. Yet, Farmelot is not large enough to fill major wholesale orders.

That’s where Buy Fresh Buy Local makes a difference.

Farmelot is one of around 100 growers, vendors and eateries participating in this agricultural marketing program. Buy Fresh Buy Local launched in 2009 as a foodsystems project of the Northern California

“It’s definitely more ag of the middle scale,” explained Noelle Ferdon, director of local food systems for the land trust who coordinates the program. “Like the growers who are too big to sell only through farmers’ markets or direct markets, but are too small to sell to some of the more mainstream distribution companies, because of economies of scale—those companies require a larger level of production.

“We’re really committed to taking a couple extra steps to work with the smaller or mid-sized growers to help them get their product to wholesale markets, even though they may not grow quite as much.”

Farmelot does sell at farmers’ markets (in Chico and Sacramento) and at local co-op grocery stores (Chico Natural Foods and Berryvale Natural Foods Grocery in Mount Shasta). However, the Brocks’ produce also goes to Holiday markets across Northern California—the type of wholesale account Ferdon highlighted.

media and marketing strategies; labeling of members’ products with the Buy Fresh Buy Local logo, and publication of The Eater’s Guide to Local Food. Guides came out in 2011 and 2013, focused on the three North Valley counties the program serves: Butte, Glenn and Tehama.

“The main point of Buy Fresh Buy Local is to raise the visibility of the people who are working hard to produce food locally and those who turn around and sell it or use it, like the restaurants and regional stores,” Ferdon said. “And then, of course, bring the consumer and producer closer together as well.”

“I let the food decide what’s local,” Brock said. “If it’s lettuce, it’s very local because it’s very perishable. If it’s more durable, it can go more regional and travel a greater distance.”

Farmelot has both types of clients.

“Now we’re at a tipping point,” said Brock, who’s 59. “We’re getting traction.”

Buy Fresh Buy Local has helped.

“Being in the local food movement, you pick up on ideas, and that’s really helped me dial in a lot of these accounts,” Brock said.

“Right now we have a lot more demand for our food than we can produce, and it’s hard to leave money on the table. It’s one thing to farm on paper; we need to produce all the food to optimize all the accounts we have.”

That could be why local agriculture is a nexus for economic growth. Ferdon jokes that she feels like an economist despite never taking an economics class because she’s frequently consulted by entities promoting tricounty commerce.

“There’s an emerging relationship between food-systems work and economic development,” she said. “People are really seeing food systems—and local food systems in particular—as a way to do targeted economic development and workforce development as a way to support small and mid-sized businesses.

“That’s another way we’re seeing our impact going much more beyond what we even imagined.” Ω

Brock didn’t come to the North State a full-

fledged commercial farmer, though he did have agriculture in his upbringing.

He grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, where his family had to fish, hunt, hike to streams for water and grow their own vegetables. He worked as a social studies teacher and served as both a county commissioner and county manager in Applegate Valley, Ore. There, he also grew produce for sale at a roadside stand.

During his final 18 months in county office, Brock spent weekdays in Oregon and weekends in Vina cultivating his farm. Karla and Laura did their share of the labor. Interns have helped, too.

SWEET ’N SLOW DEATH

Artificial sweeteners may hinder the body’s ability to process sugar, thereby setting the stage for diabetes.

Using mice, a team of researchers from Israel tested three popular sweeteners: Sweet ’N Low, Splenda and NutraSweet, according to SFGate.com. Some of the animals got one of those substances in their water, while others received sugar water or just water. After 11 weeks, the scientists gave all the mice a dose of sugar and monitored their blood sugar levels.

The results suggest that artificial sweeteners change the composition of beneficial bacteria in one’s digestive system, causing high blood sugar levels and an impairment called glucose intolerance, which in turn can lead to diabetes.

Industry groups called the findings limited and pointed to other studies that have shown sweeteners to be a safe means of weight control.

SUED OVER SLUGGISHNESS

The state has been sued by a coalition of advocacy groups over an extensive backlog of MediCal applications.

The California Department of Health Care Services is scrambling to process about 350,000 applications, as more than 2 million California residents applied for health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act’s expansion of Medi-Cal, according to California Healthline.

Earlier this year, that backlog was around 900,000 applications.

Several groups including Bay Area Legal Aid, Central California Legal Services and the Western Center on Law and Poverty filed suit, demanding that DHCS determine Medi-Cal eligibility within 45 days of submission; notify applicants who are affected by the backlog; and provide benefits to eligible residents as their applications are being processed.

Katie Murphy with Neighborhood Legal Services said the coalition hopes that Alameda County Superior Court will address the suit prior to Nov. 15, when Covered California’s second enrollment period is set to open.

MULTIPLE-DISEASE DISORDER

For years, scientists have struggled to identify specific genetic variations that put people at risk of schizophrenia. That may be because it’s eight different diseases, a study suggests.

Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis looked at the DNA of more than 4,000 people with schizophrenia, according to CNN. By matching gene variations with individual symptoms of the participants, they found several “gene clusters” that cause eight different classes of schizophrenia.

Past studies have shown that roughly 80 percent of the risk of developing schizophrenia is inherited, and that as many as 108 genes may be associated with the mental illness. This study, however, suggests that the interaction between genes may be the most important factor.

“Genes don’t operate by themselves,” wrote Dr. Robert Cloninger, one of the study’s lead authors. “They function in concert much like an orchestra.”

ith seconds left in the roller derby W match, Chico’s Nor Cal Roller Girls were trailing the Merced Rollin Roulettes

by a score of 156-154.

Nor Cal’s only player eligible to score—called a jammer—was Gretchen Lightcap. On the final play, or jam, she jostled past four Roulettes in their race around the track, thereby scoring 4 points and taking the lead for good.

Lightcap’s husband, Phil McLachlan, was ecstatic. “The game was awesome,” he said of the match. “Me and the kids were screaming off to the side.”

Not bad for Lightcap’s first roller derby bout, and, in fact, her first competitive game of any sort. But it was especially impressive considering that less than two years ago, the 34-year-old wife and mother of two boys, ages 5 and 7, had her entire colon removed due to a disease with no known cure.

In her early 20s, Lightcap began having symptoms of what was later diagnosed as ulcerative colitis, which causes ulcers and inflammation in the digestive tract. There are a wide range of symptoms, the most common of which are abdominal pain and cramping and diarrhea. Anemia also can set in, causing extreme fatigue and weakness.

“Before my surgery, I wouldn’t want to eat or exercise, because that would make

me dizzy and want to go to the bathroom,” she said.

Eventually the symptoms became unbearable.

“I would sit on the toilet in pain, passing blood every time,” Lightcap said. “The urge to go would sometimes never stop.”

She’d spend entire nights in the bathroom, a pillow on the floor and warm water in tub so she could rest between episodes.

Lightcap was incapacitated with the illness off and on for eight years, she said.

Early on, she became depressed and entertained suicidal thoughts; she still takes antidepressant medication.

Lightcap got her official diagnosis at age

25, while she was studying botany and environmental biology at Humboldt State.

But she decided to put off the most drastic treatment option—total colectomy surgery,

or the complete removal of the colon.

She’d read horror stories about the operation—complications can include abdominal blood clots, injury to other organs and leakage due to improper reconnection of the intestine—and was terrified herself. So she tried to cure the problem by means short of surgery, and the results were unpleasant.

“The smoothies and raw foods made me really sick for six months,” Lightcap recalled.

She also tried the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, eating mostly lean meats and vegetables and eliminating grains and dairy. The recommended fruits and nuts were too painful for her system, she said.

the first three months of her first pregnancy, she lost 30 pounds; she weighed 120 pounds to begin with.

Nearing her last resort, Lightcap took injections of Remicade, a prescription drug that suppresses the immune system. Soon after beginning that treatment, a lump appeared on her neck that grew to the size of a golf ball.

A doctor in Arcata suspected the lump might be cancerous; if so, it could kill her within six months.

Lightcap’s husband, McLachlan, said he began mentally bracing for life without her. But further diagnosis revealed the tumor was benign, and it was removed without complication.

At that point Lightcap, then 32, decided to have the total colectomy surgery. “My symptoms were extremely bad and my kids were getting older,” she said, “so I felt that my colon was not worth saving.”

She was given two options. The first was to wear a colostomy bag, which is worn outside the body and collects waste. She declined because of her desire to play contact sports.

“I wanted to branch out and play roller derby, so that was out,” Lightcap said.

The second option was an ileoanal pouch procedure, which reshapes the small intestine to serve the purpose of the large intestine removed during the colectomy.

But the procedure, performed at UC San Francisco Medical Center, was arduous, requiring two painful surgeries in late 2012. The first removed her colon and the second

reformed her small intestine. Fortunately, none of the feared complications affected Lightcap.

Following her recovery, Lightcap’s

friends discouraged her from joining Chico’s roller derby team, warning of the sport’s physical demands and telling her “they’re going to kill you.”

When she joined the team in January, she didn’t tell her teammates about her condition or surgery until co-captain Shannon Simmons complained of her own digestive problems.

Lightcap is glad she made the decision to play.

“These seven months of roller derby challenged me physically and mentally, and made me realize I could be more than just ‘not sick,’” she said.

That’s not to say she hasn’t had issues.

“I have to go to the bathroom a lot and must learn to have control,” she said. “But it’s like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t sit in the bathroom crying from pain anymore.’ So, how can I complain?” Ω

Voice of the people As a walnut farmer, wife and mother, Colleen Cecil knows what it’s like to be a modern woman in agriculture. But she’s also much more than that to the local farming community. Cecil been the executive director of the Butte County Farm Bureau for the past eight years, during which time she has overseen the day-to-day operations of the nonprofit organization of some 1,500 farmers, ranchers and landowners throughout the county.

The Farm Bureau works to ensure that their voices are heard both at the local level and in Sacramento, and that they have a firsthand news outlet regarding issues affecting them. She is also uniquely qualified to give her take on the state of the modern woman working in an industry that traditionally has been dominated by men.

Right now, we decided that it is very important that we get in on the marijuana discussion. There are going to be two measures on the November ballot specifically for Butte County—Measure A [establishing stricter guidelines for where medical marijuana can be cultivated] and Measure B [to repeal the Butte County code that regulates certain aspects of marijuana growing]. It really has to do

women in the field today, and I think you’re seeing more and more women in a farming role than you may have seen in the past. I think it’s going to continue to grow, and that you’re going to keep seeing women go into active farming roles. It’s an exciting time to be a woman in the industry.

Do you think that the role of women in agriculture is going to change again?

Will we see women step ever further into the role of active farming?

Sure. I think you’re going to see it continue to grow, and foster change, just because there’s more opportunity. There’s more acceptance, as well, in our community.

What is traditional now? Traditional has changed a lot since, for instance, my grandparents’ dairy farm. My grandfather ran the farm, and my grandmother made meals for the workers. That’s all changing now.

This issue’s theme, Farm to Table, is a fun one to write about. There are so many cool local people growing delicious foods for us to put on our tables and, ultimately, into our bellies. I wanted to stick with the theme, but considering how heavily we’ve focused on farms, I decided to find a local craftsman (or woman) who makes the tables we sit at to eat the fruits and veggies and meats that come off our local farms.

Enter Todd Boese, a fifth-generation woodworker who invited me out to his Butteview Woodworking shop in west Chico recently to talk about his craft. Amid the sawdust and 2-by-4s sat tables, chests and other 09 09 09 09 works in progress.

“I consider myself an artisan,” he said. “I’ve never done the same thing twice.”

Proving his10 point, he flipped through photographs10of some of the 10 10 pieces he’s created—from a gigantic dining room table supported by three glass slabs so it appears to float on air, to a paisley-shaped coffee 09 table he says is “the coolest thing I’ve ever made.”

It struck me, while talking with Boese, that there really aren’t that many true craftspeople around these days. Americans are generally more concerned with getting what they want immediately and for cheap 10 than they are with waiting and paying for quality. Boese agreed with me.

“In today’s instant-gratification-driven society, patience is not a virtue people have,” he said. A typical project takes him 14 to 16 weeks.

Luckily, since Boese moved to Butte 09 County in 09 09 09 1997, the Internet has made the world a lot smaller place. Celebrating women in local agriculture

For our second annual farm-to-table issue, the CN&R went on the hunt for women in our agriculture community. It wasn’t difficult to find them. As we’ve seen by our strolls through the local farmers’ markets, women are making their mark in our agricultural region.

That’s true around the nation. Turns out, more than 30 percent of America’s farm operators are women. That’s more than a million women who’ve dedicated their lives to this important profession. It’s an impressive number, and we’re happy to highlight in these pages some of the local

movers and shakers putting food on our tables.

In this special issue, you’ll read about Natalie Carter and Cheri Wolf, a mother-daughter farming duo, who’ve recently begun growing produce on a small plot in south Chico. You’ll meet three Chico State students who are about to embark on careers in agriculture. You’ll also learn about a local “food hub,” an organization whose mission is to buoy the local food movement by connecting growers with buyers.

We hope you enjoy reading about these folks, and be sure to flip through the rest of the paper, where you’ll meet others who are shaping the local food movement.

The archetypal—and largely apocryphal—image of the American cattleman has remained relatively unchanged for the last 150 years, looking something like one might find in an old Marlboro magazine ad or gracing the covers of western paperback novels: a man dressed in a cowboy hat and work-worn clothes, his rugged, masculine features hardened by years of living on the open range.

The 21st century reality may more resemble the image cut by Sierra Brown, a 21-yearold Chico State student, as she tends to her daily duties at the University Farm’s Beef Unit. On a recent visit to the farm (officially known as the Paul L. Byrne Agricultural Teaching and Research Center), she swished through a herd of nearly two dozen calves, directing the mass of softly mooing young heifers with subtle waves, whistles and clicks of her tongue, a string of pearls rather than a dusty kerchief circling her neck.

Standout Chico State agriculture students aren’t afraid to make their own way in an industry traditionally dominated by men who plan to make a post-graduate career in the world of agriculture, and more specifically in beef production. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2007 Census, the total number of women working in agriculture “increased 19 percent from 2002, significantly outpacing the 7 percent increase in the number of farmers overall. The number of women who were the principal operators of a farm or ranch increased by almost 30 percent,” and that growth subsided slightly when the census was updated in 2012.

In fact, the majority of students in Chico State’s College of Agriculture are women, and have been since at least 2010, according to numbers provided by agriculture professor and program coordinator Michael Spiess. In 2010, about 57 percent (268 of 456) of agriculture majors were women, compared to 61 percent (525 of 830) currently.

As an employee of the Beef Unit, Brown tends to the farm’s resident cattle daily. Feed shifts begin at 5:30 a.m., and her duties can include anything from chopping thistles (her least favorite chore) to calving or participating in research projects. As an example of research projects currently underway, she cited how she assisted in camulating a batch of heifers, or installing plugs through the cows’ skin and muscle tissue into the rumen (outer part of a bovine’s stomach) in order to monitor and measure the microbial break-

down of food.

“I think there’s definitely some different challenges [facing women in agriculture], but it’s kind of moving away from that,” Brown said. “Working in the beef industry is hard work. You sweat, you get dirty, you use your hands and you’re sometimes sore afterward. A lot of people think women can’t do it, but we can, and more and more women are getting involved in every level and every process of the beef industry.”

cers in the local branch of the Young Cattlemen’s Association (DeSimone is president, and Casacca secretary), of which Brown is also a member.

All three women said they have family backgrounds in agriculture. Brown hails from Willow Creek and began raising animals to show at fairs at the age of 9, and bought her first heifer at the age of 12. She continued to breed and raise cows until high school graduation, when she sold her herd for college tuition. DeSimone’s grandfather and uncles run a ranch that has been in her family for generations outside of Likely, a town in the far northeastern corner of California with a population of 63 in 2010.

Casacca, who’s majoring in agriculture busi-

ness with a minor in animal science, also has raised cattle since her youth through the Future Farmers of America and 4H, and still owns her own herd of about 15 head in her hometown of Hydesville, in Humboldt County. She is also a California beef ambassador for the American National Cattlewomen, and in that capacity engages in outreach, educational and promotional work regarding issues facing the beef industry.

Casacca recently organized and presented educational programs on how cows process the food they eat and the entire “pasture-toplate” process for Citrus Elementary stu-

dents. In late September, she will compete with other state ambassadors for a place on a five-person national Beef Ambassador team, a prestigious position with cash and other prizes, including the opportunity to receive an internship with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“From working with the Cattlwomen and being a beef ambassador, I’d love to continue to be involved in the public relations and educational aspects of the beef industry,” she said. “I love talking to kids, and to consumers, about agriculture.

“And, I plan to continue building my herd,” she added.

Like Brown, DeSimone—who is majoring in agriculture business—also works at the University Farm. She

currently works in the office, but hopes to get a more hands-on job in the Beef Unit next semester. She plans to graduate next spring at the ripe age of 20, and, in addition to plans to work on the family ranch and start her own herd, she’s already begun designing an educational program to bring inner-city youth to the ranch for personal enrichment and educational outings.

DeSimone and the other women said they’re glad they chose Chico State’s agriculture program and thankful for the opportunities it’s provided. In DeSimone’s case, she said contacts she made in the program helped her obtain an internship at Harris Ranch— California’s largest beef feedlot and largest ranch on the West Coast—last summer.

“It was unique because they’re so big that everything is done there,” she said.

“Because of that, I was able to witness the entire process from birthing calves in the late spring to working on the grading line and seeing the beef packaged.”

DeSimone said she doesn’t just see the industry shifting toward including more women, but more young people—and more college graduates—in general.

“I think it’s a good thing because the young folk coming up in the industry have a better, broader education and more knowledge about best practices,” she said. “I know my grandpa is 73 and an active cattleman and he’s all for anyone that wants to work hard and dedicate themselves to raising cattle, whether they’re older or younger, or male or female.” Ω more

As an 18-year-old, Noelle Ferdon was “blown away” by the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables at the Saturday farmers’ market in downtown Chico.

She was studying political science at Chico State, not yet immersed in agriculture as she is today. But even then, Ferdon was interested in food, and not just in preparing and eating it. She wanted to know where the food came from, who was buying it, and what sorts of underlying connections made it all happen.

So it feels natural for her, nearly two decades later, to be on the verge of launching the North Valley Food Hub, a new organization connecting local growers to wholesale buyers with the ultimate goal of taking the local food movement to new heights in the tri-county area.

Ferdon, now 36, was born in Houston, Texas, and then lived in Indiana before enrolling at Chico State, she said during a recent interview. From there, she studied public interest and environmental law at Golden Gate University in San Francisco.

After earning her law degree at age 25, she wasn’t sure where it would take her, but she knew she wouldn’t become an attorney.

“I don’t like to argue,” she explained. “I don’t mind being persuasive when I need to be, but lawyers like to argue, and that wasn’t where I wanted to be.

“I was really moved by agriculture,” she continued. “I knew that I had a public-interest spirit, a ‘fight the good fight’ kind of energy about my life, and I’ve always loved the history of agriculture and the connection to the communities in our region. So, working in food systems was a path I wanted to go down.”

Noelle Ferdon has been heavily involved in local food systems projects since moving to Chico full time in 2009.

Shasta-Cascade, part of the international counter-movement to fast-food culture. She subsequently landed a job with the national policy organization Food & Water Watch, helping establish their West Coast office from 2007 to 2009. As a result, she spent much of her time back in the Bay Area, where signs of the burgeoning Buy Fresh Buy Local program were everywhere—in restaurants, grocery stores and farmers’ markets. It occurred to Ferdon that a similar program could thrive here, given the North State’s agricultural diversity.

“We have rangeland, specialty crop products, acres and acres of nuts and rice, and value added by wineries and olive oil producers—but there was nothing like Buy Fresh Buy Local to help raise that visibility and connect those markets,” she said.

So she approached the Northern Califor-

nia Regional Land Trust with a proposal for a localized Buy Fresh Buy Local program.

The program was awarded a substantial grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture, and Ferdon used that funding to “establish a baseline, to get an idea of where we’re at with local food production and distribution.” With the help of Chico State agriculture professor Jacob Brimlow, she surveyed growers and buyers in the region.

“What I was hearing was that many of the growers sold to direct markets—the farmers’ markets,” she said. “But they can’t sell everything they grow in those direct markets.

They’re stuck in the middle: too big for those direct markets, too small for the mainstream, broadline distribution markets.”

In fact, about 75 percent of 5,024 farms in the tri-county region fall into that middle category, according to the 2012 agricultural census.

“Meanwhile, I’m hearing from all kinds of buyers—independent groceries, restaurants, specialty food stores, cafés—that they would love to buy local food, but they can’t go to the farmers’ market and pay retail prices,” she said. For restaurants especially, contracting with a couple dozen different local growers can be logistically daunting.

Another survey finding was a widespread need for centralized cold storage—that would help growers expand their business by keeping their produce longer. Considering all of the issues local growers recounted, Ferdon “lumped it all into one thing and called it a food hub.”

A food hub is an online marketplace where wholesale buyers can purchase from multiple local growers at one time in order to satisfy their large volume demands. The concept has been picking up steam nationally.

According to the 2013 National Food Hub Survey, 62 percent of food hubs began operating within the last five years.

With a website up and running, the North Valley Food Hub is set to open its first market in October.

Looking back on how far she’s come, Ferdon said she long questioned whether family farmers would consider her an equal in business matters.

“I don’t come from a second- or third- or fourth-generation farming family; sometimes, I wondered whether that would affect my credibility in some way,” she said. “But it just hasn’t. The agriculture community has been so open, so engaged in this project all along.” Ω more

For the past two years, Natalie Carter has served as office manager for the Chico Certified Farmers’ Market. Perhaps not coincidently, two years ago she and her mother, Cheri Wolf, started a produce farm in southwest Chico, growing crops including popcorn, arava melons, edamame, multicolored bell peppers and fingerling potatoes.

The crops are grown on threequarters of an acre of land located along a private drive off Marian Avenue. The land is owned by a friend who allows them access to tend to the farm.

On a recent Saturday, Carter, Wolf and Carter’s 7-month-old daughter, Aria, gathered on the farm for a tour. At this point in the year, they’ve laid down large sections of cardboard to help control weeds during the upcoming winter. They still have some melons and a few unpicked cobs of red popcorn on the yellowing stalks. Gathered on the south side of the farm was a small flock of silky bantam chickens and a couple of roosters huddled in their coop.

“We let them wander around out here to pick up slugs and leave fertilizer,” Carter said, nodding toward and speaking over a light din of squawks.

Aria accompanies her mother and grandmother when they tend to the farm every morning and some evenings during the growing season, averaging four to six hours per day. So, including Aria, the farm is operated by three generations of women, each breaking the stereotype of the farmer as predominantly male.

“What had happened is I was working at an unpleasant job that involved a lot of travel all over the nation, though it paid pretty well. It was a big risk “SEEDS” continued on page 29

leaving that job,” she said, “but I quit to come home and have this. What I really wanted to do was become a farmer.”

She said she shared the idea with her husband, Eric Carter, who suggested she talk to his grandfather, Gerald Bonds, one of the founding members of the CCFM. “So I spent that next growing season with Jerry, helping him plant and maintain his crops and till his soil,” Carter said. “I got to drive a tractor for the first time and began selling his produce at the farmers’ market.”

Up to that point, Carter said, she had only gardened “recreationally.” She also learned from Bonds about the CCFM’s office manager position, for which she applied and was promptly hired.

Bonds’ history as a farmer somewhat echoes Carter’s. When he helped found the CCFM, where he sold his crops, his full-time job was with Pacific Bell. After 34 years with the company, he turned down an opportunity to transfer to Sacramento, deciding instead to take an early retirement and focus on his crops, which he continues to do to this day at the age of 84.

“So I worked with Jerry that season, wanting to explore farming in a way that was unique to me, and Jerry encouraged that,” Carter said. “I started talking with my mother, who had participated a little bit out at Jerry’s, and we decided that we were going to give it a go—try to grow our own food. It wasn’t a case of, ‘We’re going to make money off this.’ It was, ‘Let’s feed ourselves and our families and grow local food.’”

She also consulted with an Oroville farmer named Carl Rosato, who started his 26-acre Woodleaf Farm in 1980 and became certified organic two years later.

“He gave us pointers on soil sampling and such,” Carter said. “So we spread gypsum and a lot of compost and rented a tiller, tilled it all up and planted all sorts of cover crop like crimson clover.”

This season they started growing vegetable crops.

“There were some successes and some horrendous failures,” she said. “The gophers got more of the fingerling potatoes than anyone else.”

She said the process is a learning curve and they are looking forward to next season.

“My mother is not an agriculturalist by trade,” she said. “Her degree is in information technology and she is a computer programmer by trade. And she is my partner as well as my mother.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” she added.

“We’ve done garlic and that’s been a big one for us. We haven’t been selling a lot of it, but we have definitely increased the amount we are growing. And we’re growing red popcorn, which has been a lot of fun.”

They’ve been able to sell their produce at the Wednesday CCFM, located at the North Valley Plaza, and there were a few Saturdays over the winter when they sold their foods at the downtown market, too.

She said farming has been an interesting experience for Carter, her mother, and, she assumes, Aria, and they are very much looking forward to tilling the soil next year. Ω

Given the personal, powerful experience of the first album, Williams knows expectations will be high for this new album. And in a recent interview, he dropped a few hints about its content.

“It has a lot of family lore in it, and a Southern Gothic vibe to the stories,” the Georgia native said.

“It’s born from some very personal things. There’s a good bit of joy and celebration, but there’s also some valleys in there. It takes the darkest colors and the 30

lightest colors to try to paint something beautiful.”

The new projects’ music showcases beauty in another art form as well: photography. Having used just a simple black-and-white image of themselves for the cover of their debut, the trio is taking things to another level on this new release. Not only will the cover be more arresting, but Williams said there will be a selection of photos included with the release that inspired the music and the theme that was developed for the album.

“We sent a photographer, Leanne Ford, down to our hometowns in Georgia, and she went around and interviewed all these people,” Williams said. “Some of the songs are about the people she interviewed.

One of the values of the record that we were shooting for was celebrating the mundane, so it’s a lot of beautiful pictures of people inside their houses.”

To illustrate how the mundane can be beautiful, gut-wrenching, tragic and even provide a powerful image of love, Williams shared one photo’s story: “The picture for the Record Store Day EP is of this man named Hugh,” he said. “He’s sitting on this bed he hasn’t slept in since his wife passed away 30 years ago. He sleeps in the guest room. It’s absolutely gorgeous how Leanne captured this moment with this guy where she knocked on his door, went inside and interviewed him for four hours and he told her all these incredible stories.”

As intriguing as that story and the one of Williams’ wife’s eventual recovery from her injury are, Williams knows that a big part of the next chapter for the band will involve their fans, once they start interacting with the new material.

“There’s a song I haven’t had the guts to sing in front of people yet,” Williams admits without giving any other details. “It’s going to be a challenge, but it’s worth it. When you’re making music with good friends, we all carry everything together. And then the audience carries it with you, so over time, the song you are singing literally becomes someone else’s song. That’s my hope with this record, that it will become people’s songs.” Ω

Proto-Con Every year, more than 100,000 comic book lovers, cosplayers, Trekkies, geeks and true believers of all stripes flock to San Diego for Comic-Con International, a five-day marathon freak show that turns the city into a fantasy wonderland. But even the world’s largest comic convention sprung from humble beginnings. In 1970, the event began as the Golden State Comic-Minicon, with two featured speakers attracting about 100 fans. Considering comic love has become much more EDITOR’S PICK acceptable to the mainstream in recent years, there’s a good chance that the inaugural Chico-Con on Sunday, Sept. 28, could top that auspicious event’s first outing. “We were discussing those concepts with our children and thinking of what we could do for her, and Moussia came up with the idea of starting a children’s library,” Chana said, adding that Arnoff was a “passionate librarian and lifelong book lover.”

As they talked the idea through, Moussia realized they’d need money to buy books and other materials, and came up with an idea of how to raise the necessary funds. Chana explained that her daughter’s favorite activity is baking, and she’s been helping her mother in the kitchen since the age of 3. Moussia especially likes making challah, the braided Jewish bread traditionally eaten on Shabbat and during holidays.

“She loves making the braids, and is very good at it,” Chana said. “It’s usually made with three braids or six, which is more complicated, and she learned to do six braids very young. She even taught my mother how to do six braids, and my mother has been baking challah weekly for over 30 years.”

Moussia and her mom get plenty of practice making challah, as the Chabad Center hosts regular weekly Shabbat dinners and delivers food to elderly home- or facility-bound members of the local Jewish community. Chana estimated she and Moussia managed at least two large batches a week even before they started bak-

ing it to sell to the public.

For the fundraising, the two began baking about 30 loaves of white and whole-wheat challah weekly to sell at Chico’s Saturday farmers’ market and the Thursday Night Market downtown, as well as taking orders via email and phone.

In July, Moussia met her initial goal of raising enough money to purchase about 100 books, and a few other materials—a wooden Rosh Hashana play set and Jewish-themed toys, including a stuffed dreidel and Matzah Man doll.

A carpenter in the Chabad community offered to build shelves for the Jewish Children’s Library, which is housed at the Chabad Center and celebrated it’s opening Sunday, Sept. 14, with a “Shofar Factory” workshop for children. A shofar is a musical instrument made from a ram’s horn of special significance during Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, which began at sundown Wednesday (Sept. 24) and ends at sundown Friday (Sept. 26).

“On Rosh Hashana, the mitzvah [religious duty] of the day is to hear the shofar blown,” said Rabbi Zwiebel. “Rosh Hashana is the day God judges the world and decides what its fate will be in the following year.

“Jews traditionally go to synagogue to pray to God to overlook our misdeeds and see our true essence that wants to connect to God. We ask forgiveness for things we might have done incorrectly the previous year,” he added. “The shofar-blowing is like the cry of the soul calling out to God and saying, ‘Please allow me to come home.’”

When asked what her daughter has gained from the experience, Chana said, “I think it helped her learn a lot about the value of giving of yourself to help the community, as well as having the experience of working toward a long-term goal.” And as the Jewish New Year begins, Moussia and her mother will continue to bake and sell challah and honor Bubby Selda, with profits marked for further library improvements, including bean-bag chairs and other seating, more holiday-related, educational play sets and, of course, Ω more books.

It’s alive!

Turn your kitchen into a food lab with at-home fermentation f you’ve been paying attention, you may have noticed Iserious that fermented foods have been staging a small but coup on the American kitchen. Seemingly

every food blogger on the interwebs has weighed in on the subject, and a sudden proliferation of fermenting books, tools story and and products has made a noticephoto by Jesse Mills able splash in the market. Even Walmart has taken notice, with ad copy exhorting its customers to “Kick the soda habit with kombucha!” And while fermenting has all the makings of the next DIY flavor-of-the-month, it deserves a more serious look.

Since our first taste of honey mead in the dim whatevers of prehistory, humans have been fascinated by fermentation. Every culture has its own unique, often ancient, approach to fermentation, from the rotten fish paste of both the Inuits and the ancient Romans, to dark Chinese “century eggs,” to the sauerkraut on your lunchtime Reuben. Before the advent of refrigeration, fermentation was a critical means of preserving foods through the lean winter months. This preservative action is the work of a type of bacteria called lactobacilli, which consume plant and dairy sugars while exuding lactic acid. Once a young ferment reaches a certain pH level, this acid inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi, preventing spoilage and allowing the lactobacilli to do their work.

And what strange and exceptional work. A mature ferment is much more than the sum of its ingredients, becoming a living stew of nutrients and beneficial microbes. Once consumed, many of these microbes take up permanent residence in the digestive tract.

And according to recent medical research, a diverse population of friendly intestinal bacteria can be critical to overall health.

I had wanted to explore home fermenting for years, but like so many, I had been subconsciously tuned in to a cultural narrative penned by Lysol. In this narrative, bacteria are portrayed as tiny green boogiemen intent on causing mayhem, plague and death. I bought and inhaled kimchi (a spicy Korean ferment related to sauerkraut) by the jar, but assumed experimenting in my own kitchen was inviting disas-

ter. At best I thought it involved costly and extravagant equipment, difficult recipes and a regime of absolute sterility.

I could not have been more wrong. After reading the book Wild Fermentation by Sandor Katz, the unofficial godfather of the modern fermenting movement, my wife and I went straight to the kitchen, dusted off a few Mason jars and got to work. That was months ago, and since then we’ve turned our kitchen into a sort of alchemist’s workshop, with various crocks and jars happily bubbling away on the countertops and in the fridge, their vivid colors and baffling smells the subject of constant inquiry from visitors.

If you’re looking for a quick and dirty introduction to the art of home fermentation, kimchi is a good place to start. Bright, crunchy, tangy, with as much or as little spice as you desire, it is my go-to ferment, pairing equally well with a bowl of jasmine rice or a grilled steak. I typically enjoy it straight from the jar, standing in front of the fridge in my underwear.

The basic recipe is about as straightforward as it gets: enough chopped cabbage to fill a wide-mouth 1-quart jar, and an equal amount of whatever else you want. Grated carrot and daikon radish go in there.

Add an onion, a lot or a little garlic, a lot or a little grated ginger, or green beans, or hot peppers, or kale, or turnips, or whatever’s coming up in your garden, or whatever you bring home from the farmers’ market. Wild edibles such as purslane, comfrey and field mustard make a strong showing in all of my kimchis.

Mix the ingredients together in a large mixing bowl, and cover with a solution of filtered water and sea salt (1 tablespoon of salt per cup of water), cover with a dinner plate and leave overnight. Thus softened, it should all pack into one jar the following day.

Fill to the top with the saved salt brine and insert a drinking glass or other weight on top, the idea being to keep all the ingredients submerged—lactobacilli are anaerobic, and exposure to oxygen invites mold.

It’s a good idea to check it every day, scooping out and discarding anything moldy or suspicious, and tracking subtle shifts in flavor. In a week, your kimchi’s true flavors have fully emerged, and it’s ready for the refrigerator, where it will last for months.

Zoe Nathan Chronicle Books Browsing through the pictures and recipes in this cookbook from Santa Monica’s famed Huckleberry Bakery and Café for the first time is sure to elicit “oohs” and “ahhs,” and the stomach-growling and the drooling won’t recede on subsequent perusals. With close to 115 recipes ranging from the immediately captivating blueberry brioche on the cover to a pesto riff on eggs Benedict—aptly named Green Eggs and Ham—there’s no shortage of delicious breakfast and brunch fare.

Tracking the genealogy of McKinley Morganfield’s progeny is an arduous task as the charismatic bluesman—aka Muddy Waters—had a lot of illegitimate children. Two of his sons, “Mud” and “Big Bill” Morganfield, have carved out careers based on their illustrious father’s name, with Mud (real name Larry Williams, born in 1954, and the elder by two years) hewing closely to his father’s legacy by performing Waters’ songs, while Big Bill (né William) focuses mostly on his own material. For Pops is Mud’s second CD for Severn and really lives up to its billing. Backed by a solid combo that features the stunning harmonica work of Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson, it is a true treasure of which I’m sure his dad would have been proud. His singing (unlike his father, Mud doesn’t play guitar) evokes Waters on nearly every song. Some of the highlights: on “Still a Fool,” he perfectly captures the heartache of desiring a married woman he knows he can’t have; on the classic “Nineteen Years Old,” Billy Flynn’s slide guitar is stunningly effective; and on “She Moves Me,” Wilson gets inside the song just as harp icon Little Walter did on the original version. In sum this is a great collection of Waters’ material lovingly rendered.

Most people have had dates that didn’t go quite as they hoped, but sometimes things are so crappy that the date becomes a story—perhaps even a tale of caution—that needs to be told. London-based writer/musician Rhodri Marsden withstood his share of crap dates, and he turned to Twitter to vent. He received thousands of responses, and a conversation began as people started sharing their own experiences @FirstDateHell. Marsden plucked the best examples of the worst encounters from his Twitter feed and put them in a book: Crap Dates: Disastrous Encounters From Single Life. Broken up into general categories like the Sexual Deviant, the Arrogant Scumbag, the Mama’s Boy and the Tactless Idiot, Crap Dates is full of bite-sized summaries of bad dates that were at turns humorous, sketchy and ridiculous, sometimes all at the same time: “He called 10 minutes before the date to ask if I was running late. He picked a fight with a stranger for looking at him and said aliens are in the Bible.” Crap Dates won’t win any literary awards, but it’s a fun read, and, at the very least, it might offer hope by showing us that our bad dates could’ve been much worse.

Opening this week The Boxtrolls

A shot of the underworld Strong characters and great actors in screenwriter Dennis Leehane’s latest crime drama he Drop has been noted for the final performance Tcharacter from the late James Gandolfini, and he and his (a bar owner named Marv) are indeed among the strong points of this hard-bitten crime drama/character study. But it’s Marv’s younger cousin, a taciturn by Juan-Carlos bartender named Bob Saginowski (an excellent Tom Hardy), who is the real Selznick and vital center of this character-driven tale adapted by author Dennis Leehane (Mystic River, Shutter Island) from one of his own short stories.

The title refers to the taverns and bars that racketeers use as temporary banks for a single night’s profits.

Marv’s bar, which he no longer actually owns, is one such “drop,” and the fallout from his underworld dealings sparks much of the drama that threatens to engulf Bob and several others.

The Drop Those others include a Chechen Starring Tom gangster (a suavely menacing Hardy, Noomi Michael Aronov), a scruffily maliRapace and cious grifter (Matthias Schoenaertes), James Gandolfini. a chummy Catholic police detective Directed by (John Ortiz) who tries to keep sly Michaël R. tabs on Bob, and a tough-minded Roskam. working gal (Noomi Rapace) who Cinemark 14. bonds with Bob over a rescued pit Rated R. bull pup. Each of these characters brings out something distinctive in Bob and, to a lesser extent, in Marv as well. And yet part of the special power and mystery of The Drop is that, even with these added perspectives, we don’t really have a full picture of who Bob is until the end, and maybe not even then.

Director Michaël R. Roskam, a Belgian making his first English-language feature, has his multinational cast (Hardy is British, Rapace and Schoenaertes are European) credibly tangle New Yorkese through-

out. Hardy, a marvel of subtlety earlier this year in Locke, is even better here. Ω

A cemetery figures prominently in A Walk Among the Tombstones, but it’s the metaphorical graveyard—a dying city, a culture of violence, moral rot—that proves haunting in the biggest ways in the film. It has a retired New York City cop (Liam Neeson) getting deeper and deeper into an off-the-books search for the perpetrators of a murder-kidnap scheme that targets the wives, lovers and daughters of local drug traffickers.

Writer-director Scott Frank (working from the novel by Lawrence Block) maintains a scary kind of dramatic tension right from the start. Part of that comes from generic sources—vicious crimes, sadistic villains. But there’s a more complex and disturbing kind of suspense arising from the motley crew of variously unhinged characters attempting to track down those villains.

Matt Scudder (Neeson) has a haunted past of his own, and that seems to make him both reluctant and obsessive in his deepening involvement in all this.

The paradoxes and duplicities of his character find peculiar echoes in the conduct of his less reputable cohorts, including especially the aggrieved drug kingpin Kenny Kristo (Dan Stevens) and Kenny’s sad sack, drug-addicted brother Pete (Boyd Holbrook). A street kid named TJ (Brian “Astro” Bradley) and the villains’ portly accomplice (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) serve as variously ironic foils as well.

The violence is graphic, grisly and—in terms of genre—anything but routine. It’s partly a story about men and boys drawn to violence, but in Frank’s rendering, that violence is repellent at the very least, and never glorified, even when seemingly justifiable. Ω

Former SNL castmates Bill Heder and Kristen Wiig play estranged twins who, thanks to simultaneous freak incidents, are reunited and faced with the challenge of repairing their relationship. Also starring Luke Wilson and Ty Burrell. Cinemark 14. Rated R.

The Trip to Italy

A sequel, of sorts, to 2011’s The Trip, Michael Winterbottom’s British TV series is once again edited into a film version. Where the first film focused on comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon (playing themselves) taking a foodie tour of Britain, part two follows the pair as they retrace the footsteps of Romantic poets who traveled through Italy. Boyhood

Boyhood is such a beguiling array of time-capsule moments—12 years in the life of a boy growing up in the vicinity of Houston, Texas. Part of what’s intriguing, of course, is the project’s central concept: its bits-and-pieces story proceeds year by year, through scenes filmed year by year as Ellar Coltrane, the young actor who plays the central character (whose name is Mason), grows up. He’s 6 at the start and 18 at the finish. And part of it is also that writer-director Richard Linklater’s approach to story and drama is so casual and easygoing, even though resolutely unsentimental. The movement through these fragments of time is both seamless and unhurried. The passage of time in this story is always in motion, as is the film’s sense of “boyhood.” Linklater evokes the recent past, but his time-capsule movie has no frozen moments, and it reminds us more than once that even the most significant moments never really stand separate from the flux of all existence. Guardians of the Galaxy

If someone was gonna make a swell comic-book movie despite the aggressively calculating influence of both Disney and Marvel it would be writer/director James Gunn. And yep, he did it. Gunn was writer of the better-than-the-original remake of Dawn of the Dead and he’s been a filmmaker to keep an eye on since graduating the Troma School of low-budget filmmaking, and writing, producing and starring in The Specials, one of the first deconstructionist swipes at superheroes. The story here: Charming half-human/half-alien rogue Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) steals a MacGuffin and teams up with a band of misfits—including a foul-tempered talking raccoon and a sentient tree (voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, respectively)—to avert the destruction of the galaxy from some intergalactic dude. It’s kind of shambolic, but in a good way, and easily the most entertaining movie of the year, a delirious romp through the CGI cosmos. Gunn isn’t shy about wearing his influences on his sleeve, evoking the best aspects of the original Star Wars, Joss Whedon’s Firefly and all sorts of other fun stuff.

An adaptation of James Dashner’s youngadult sci-fi book of the same name about a group of teenagers trying to escape from the center of a giant maze that is patrolled by murderous creatures called Grievers.

This is Where I Leave You

Director Shawn Levy has a strong script here (by Jonathan Tropper, from his novel) and a stronger cast. Tropper’s story is the reunion of the four adult Altman siblings at the funeral of their father. Their mother Hilary (Jane Fonda) insists that the family sit shiva for him. That means seven days. They’re not estranged, exactly, just not all that comfortable around each other for any length of time. Jason Bateman plays Judd, still reeling from catching his wife, Quinn (Abigail Spencer), in bed with his boss.

He learns of his father’s death from his older sister Wendy (Tina Fey), the sibling who most often plays buffer and peacemaker among the others. There’s also Paul (Corey Stoll), whose wife, Alice (Kathryn Hahn), is desperate to have a baby, and the youngest sibling, who still hasn’t really grown up, Phillip (Adam Driver). There’s an honest bittersweetness to the film. The Altmans may send each other up the walls sometimes, but there’s an affectionate bond that can’t be denied. “You may be idiots,” Wendy tells her brothers, “but you’re my idiots.” Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7.
