I got a good lesson on the effects emotional stress has on blood sugar a couple weeks ago. I have 8 lovely women in a Ketogenic Adaptation group who have been teaching me a lot by sharing their journey. Seven were overweight.

Two had migraine headaches.

One was diabetic. All were insulin resistant and wanted to change their health related reality.

The class was a great success!

Everyone lost weight, both migraines went away, the diabetic achieved normal blood sugar, and everyone learned a whole bunch about fueling their bodies.

Then, one day about 6 weeks in, the diabetic called at noon and complained that her blood sugars were “through the roof” and “I didn’t do anything different!”, Nothing different except fighting with the husband, that is.

She got angry, adrenaline dumped into her system, and her blood sugars went sky-rocketing.

At 5 PM I got another call from a group member complaining that she felt nauseous and head-achy but hadn’t done anything different that day,..except, as it took her a minute to recall, get really, really, really upset that morning. After there is UP, there is generally DOWN...and so it was with her blood sugar.

Stress, anger, and anxiety cause your adrenal glands to kick out hormones that flood your body with sugar, followed by insulin, which brings blood sugar down... which will make you crave sugar.

This is sometimes called the blood sugar roller-coaster. So, does this mean that getting upset frequently promotes sugar cravings, obesity, diabetes and heart disease?

Since she is here nearly every time I am, we either have uncanny connectivity, or she lives at the park.

Curiosity trumped.

“Hello, I’ve seen you by here before. Do you walk Marie Altman a lot?”

“I have brain damage,” The author, a native she said. “I was in an Chicoan, is a teacher accident and I walk every of bilingual education, day!”

ESL, yoga, I was surprised by her meditation, art confidence and honesty. I and poetry. circled around and walked closer, and she slowed, obviously wanting to talk.

“Wow, I’m impressed!” I was drawn in by her smile and delicate facial lines.

She formed words with a concentration similar to practicing dance steps, or like my attempts at long Spanish words. I saw in this kinesthetically kindred spirit that it

could easily be me overcoming grave harm, and I felt honored to talk with her. Two and a half years ago, her doctor told her she would be a vegetable. Today, she talks and walks and doesn’t stop. I lobbed my big question strategically in a rare pause of our conversation. “How many hours a day do you walk?”

“All day!” she beamed. “I can’t be inside, have to get out. I leave after breakfast, and come back for dinner.” Breakfast is at 7:30, dinner is at 5:30. You do the math; the probability of our meeting like this was high.

This proud mother, once a marathon runner and avid camper, is now a marathon walker, gaining health and independence in nature. The hours and miles spent under the sycamores and oaks of Bidwell Park are retraining for the self-reliance to live on her own again. It’s a fulltime job she performs with Olympian dedication. She literally walks circles around me. My walk times 10 is this athlete’s daily commute to health. She competes with injury and does so with fine sportsmanship. Little did I know when I said hello to her she would be lighting up my day. I wonder, how many extraordinary humans fly like this, under the radar? Ω

council meetings to berate certain council members, saying, in effect, “It’s all your fault.”

What they conveniently fail to mention are the actual causes of the city’s financial problems: the worst recession in modern history and its resulting drop in sales-tax and property-tax revenues; the state’s disbanding of redevelopment agencies, costing the city millions of dollars in revenue; the loss of a half-million dollars in annual vehicle-license-fee funds; and the loss of nearly a million dollars a year in cellphone-tax revenues.

Of these, the council had control over only one, the phone-tax initiative on the November 2012 ballot. The council authorized the vote because, while it long had collected the tax money, it needed to update its utility-tax ordinance to explicitly include new technologies such as cellular and Internet phones.

Council conservatives knew how much money the city would lose if the measure failed, but they opposed it anyway out of sheer antitax stubbornness. Council liberals supported the measure but didn’t campaign for its passage or even try to help voters understand it.

Council liberals can be faulted for their political passivity, but that’s about all.

Critics of the council liberals also like to blame them for the bloated wages and benefits city employees receive, ignoring the fact that, over the years, both liberal and conservative councils have approved generous employee packages. And it was a conservative-dominated council that, in the mid-1990s, dramatically reduced development-impact fees. Had it not done so, the private development fund would be in much better shape than it is now.

It’s true that City Hall didn’t respond to the recession as quickly or decisively as it could have—and should have. It was an extremely difficult time. Former City Manager Dave Burkland, a nice guy, was reluctant to lay off people he’d worked with for many years. He preferred to reduce the size of city government through attrition, and to keep it functioning by moving money among various funds and dipping into the emergency reserves.

There were, and still are, differences of opinion about those approaches.

It’s notable, though, that the only objection conservative council members raised at the time was to the reduction in the size of the reserves. In response, council liberals argued that the city was facing an emergency, so using some of the reserves was appropriate.

But City Hall cried out for reorganization. There were too many departments, 11 altogether, each with its expensive director. One, Housing and Neighborhood Services, decimated by the loss of RDA funding, had only one full-time and one half-time employee under its director.

That’s why the council hired an outsider, Brian Nakamura, to replace Burkland when the latter retired in August 2012. Nakamura’s job was to take a hatchet to City Hall, to “right-size” the organization, as he put it. If that left blood on the floor, so be it. Whatever one may think of Nakamura’s style, he did what the council members, liberals and conservatives alike, asked him to do.

There’s an election coming up, and conservatives see an opportunity to regain a majority on the council by blaming liberals for the city’s problems.

But it’s simply not true. Remember that as we get closer to November. Ω

The quote “I am reticent of spending money before we have it,” attributed to Ann Schwab, left me dumbfounded. The city is $15 million in debt! Schwab was not only a councilmember when that debt was incurred but was also the mayor during much of that time.

When did she finally realize that you cannot spend what you do not have? The liberal council was told repeatedly the city had a “structural deficit.” Surely if she did not understand those words a quick look into a dictionary would have made it crystal clear.

It will take this city 15 years to clear the debt Schwab and both current and former ultra-liberal members of the council have left to the residents of our city. It will take years to rebuild our police department, current technology to replace 20-year-old outdated systems, roads and building maintenance neglected for years, all for the sake of feelgood projects and re-election.

Schwab, along with Scott Gruendl, Mary Flynn/Goloff, Andy Holcombe, Tom Nickell, Jim Walker, etc., should hang their collective heads in shame for what they have wrought on this community—a legacy of incredible irresponsible fiscal incompetence.

Re “An immodest proposal” (Newslines, by Howard Hardee, June 19): The city is low on funds and wants to be fair with the entire community. Political and financial pressures forced them to cut library spending by $25,000. Thank you, council members [Sean] Morgan and [Mark] Sorensen, for attempting to preserve funding at the same level as last year.

Speakers at the June 17 city budget hearing stated the library hasn’t been cut. It has been cut. Previously, the city contributed more than $150,000. Now it’s half of that.

The library has laid off good, dedicated employees.

This is not a “county vs. city” problem, but it is a problem for library staff members, who work hard to make the library a place where Chico residents can learn, find jobs, etc. It’s a problem for the residents who count on the library having consistent open hours.

It’s not just library staff who care so much. Last month, more than 1,000 volunteer hours were spent caring for the library.

Without those volunteers, the library wouldn’t function. We believe the city should share responsibility for keeping the Chico library open. Chico is the largest branch in Butte County. A big percentage of its 49,700 patrons are people who vote in city elections.

We didn’t have a City Council meeting this week, but there was something out of the June 17 session that I wasn’t able to tackle in our last issue. If you read Howard Hardee’s coverage of the budget portion of that meeting (see “An immodest proposal,” Newslines, June 19), you know that community-safety advocates Clean and Safe Chico proposed a four-year plan to buoy the Chico Police Department’s staffing levels from 56 officers to 83.

You can read the entire proposal at the Clean and Safe Chico website (cleanandsafechico.com). I did. A couple of things struck me. But the biggest by far was a portion that talks about how to fund the increased staffing.

It will cost $3.6 million annually by year four, according to the group. Where will that money come from? One of the plan’s five ideas is “new revenue sources,” such as a waste-hauling franchise agreement. Another suggests “proactive economic growth” would generate more tax revenue. And yet another talks about a public-safety tax.

In other words, three of the five ideas involve taxation.

I hate to sound like a tea partyer, but I’m not about to advocate for new taxes. Here’s why: The city of Chico could probably staff the Chico Police Department with 83 officers if it could negotiate reasonable wages and benefits contracts with city employee unions, especially the Chico Police Officers’ Association and Chico Firefighters Association—which together account for more than 80 percent of the city’s entire operating budget.

Both unions made some concessions during the last round of negotiations, but, as was made clear during last Tuesday’s meeting, those contracts remain an obstacle to the city’s financial solvency. As Administrative Services Director Chris Constantin asked, “How do we sustain ourselves when the cost of benefits increases faster than revenues?”

Until those costs are reined in, I don’t see any reason to support such a plan.

Speaking of Chico police, by now you may have seen the video of Officer David Bailey yanking a 64-year-old man by the arms to get him out of an overturned SUV following an accident a few weeks back (see “Video sparks controversy,” by Meredith J. Graham, page 8). Footage of that scenario got picked up by the Glenn Beck-founded and -owned right-wing website TheBlaze, and has logged about 34,000 views and some pretty harsh criticism of Bailey’s actions.

But I’d urge caution before rebuking this Chico cop.

For one, the video is edited. So, we haven’t seen a full picture of his interactions with that man, Joseph Rosales.

What we do know is that Rosales’ vehicle struck a support beam holding up a large metal awning, damaging its structural integrity. We also can tell Bailey is concerned that the structure was going to collapse and that he tried unsuccessfully to talk Rosales into climbing out of the SUV before resorting to (literal) arm-twisting. Does it look harsh? Yes. Was there a better way to handle the situation? Probably. But, given the circumstances, I understand why Bailey used pain to motivate Rosales to exit the vehicle. What do you think?

Say no to secession Re “Jeffersonians en masse” (Newslines, by Meredith J. Graham, June 12): I have lived in both Southern and Northern California. It is a beautiful state because of its variety of mountains, deserts, warm and cold climates, fields and meadows for grazing animals, farmlands and orchards, and the many different occupations and nationalities of the people who live here.

Why would anyone want to divide it into six different states?

As I see it, it is an attempt to gerrymander it into political areas so as to better control and change the politics of the state. In other words, divide and conquer.

As for including Butte County in a state of Jefferson, I hope it never happens. I, for one, don’t want to live in a confederate state.

Way to be critical Re “Cut and run” (Second & Flume, by Melissa Daugherty, June 5): It is refreshing to find a newspaper willing to be critical of the establishment in a small town. Too often, the old-boy network is counterproductive to accurate reporting. Your paper was willing to take on the city manager for bailing out of one city after another. Why could a reporter learn of Nakamura’s history with a few phone calls while the City Council and hiring firm could not?

If this were Congress, there would be hearings that would bring the last few city managers back to face tough questioning of what happened. Let’s hope they don’t lose all their documents like the IRS just told Congress. We cannot continue to witness dis-

honesty in government, local or national.

The individuals may be friendly people who served punch at little league games, but it is troubling that they hid tens of millions of debt for years and no one noticed as quickly as Nakamura did within days. Answers are needed. Maybe some jail time for gross incompetence for all responsible. The city of Bell may have some competition for bad management.

Slums and soccer My feelings about the 2014 World Cup went from disgust to revulsion when I saw a video of young boys and girls, terrified and weeping, as their plywood shacks were bulldozed by the Brazilian government—the homes stood in the way of another party for the rich.

Somehow the tears of children brought all the protests, including the million who marched on opening day, into perspective.

The world community—with $14 billion to $50 billion spent by Brazil alone—has once again bought an entertaining spectacle, while billions suffer with dirty water, lack of food and shelter, easily curable diseases and horrendous working conditions.

Beyond the treasure spent by the Brazilian government, it is also disheartening to ponder the billions spent by the affluent of the world as they board jets (often private jets) and head to Rio—flying in over slums where babies are born into grinding and inescapable poverty. Flying in over slums where the cost to own and operate one private jet would adequately house a thousand people.

From all appearances in the media, it’s supposed to matter to me, right here in Chico, that the U.S. failed in its “bid” to triumph over Portugal, etc., etc. Nothing could matter less.

Bridge-building needed Bridges are supposed to connect between opposite sides of a chasm.

This is a fitting metaphor for those who reside beneath the bridges.

Passages should be connected to remove a barrier.

Opposing views of how to “deal” with these nonresidents fail to improve relationships. In other words, we have failed to bridge the gap.

The homeless voice is underrepresented and barely heard at the many task force meetings seeking to solve Chico’s homeless problem. These vagrants need medical health care for mental and physical issues and addiction to drugs or a combination. Valid attempts haven’t adequately addressed what lies under the “bridge.”

Other than the Jesus Center, Torres Community Shelter and Butte County Health Department, where can they get help? Being written off by society, is it any wonder they have conflicts with social mores? A downtown clinic or center would help.

Do we really care or is it just so much “water” under the bridge?

What about Palestinian kids?

I am disturbed to hear of the disappearance of three Israeli settler teens from the West Bank, yet so saddened by extreme media silence over hundreds of abductions, torture and killing of Palestinian children over many years.

From January 2000 through June 2014, 1,405 Palestinian children under 18 years old were killed as a result of Israeli military and settler presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Of these, 263 were 8 years old or younger. These numbers do not include children killed while involved in hostilities (www.dcipalestine.org/content/ child-fatalities).

In the first 10 days of June, 17 Palestinian boys were abducted in the occupied West Bank; the youngest, 13, the oldest, 17. Some were dragged at gunpoint from their homes in the middle of the night; others seized in broad daylight. All abductions were documented by the Palestinian Monitoring Group.

There has been great media outcry over the alleged kidnapping of the Israeli settler boys and fierce condemnation by U.S. legislators.

None of the abductions of Palestinian teens were reported by the international media; no Western politicians called for their release (tinyurl.com/palestinianteens).

Western media must stop the blackout of Israeli oppression of Palestinians—fairness and accuracy in reporting!

TRASH AGREEMENT IN THE WORKS

The Butte County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday (June 24) to move forward with adopting franchise agreements with three trash haulers—Recology, Waste Management and Northern Recycling and Waste Services—that would divide the county into operating zones for each company as a way to stop wear and tear on roads, reduce vehicle emissions and increase revenues.

The agreements would be for a 15-year term and would set up recycling zones to regulate refuse, recycling and green waste around Magalia, Durham, South Oroville, Kelly Ridge and the unincorporated areas of Chico.

In the county’s nonrecycling zones, there will simply be general waste collection, though the haulers can offer separate recycling pick up if they so choose.

The haulers will pay the county a franchise fee that is 3 percent of their gross revenue. The matter will be finalized at a future meeting.

SHASTA SAYS NO TO JEFFERSON

State of Jefferson supporters hit another speed bump on Tuesday (June 24), when the Shasta County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 against supporting the movement to separate the North State from California.

The decision came after more than two hours of debate and public comment, with most of the 40-plus community members who spoke publicly asking the board to support a split. Thus far, supervisors in four counties—Glenn, Modoc, Siskiyou and Yuba—have voted to support Jefferson, as have voters in Tehama County.

Butte County supervisors voted on June 10 to revisit the issue in six months.

In other state-splitting news, signatures are being gathered to put Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper’s plan to divide California into six states to voters this November. More than 800,000 signatures must be collected from registered voters by July 18 to qualify the initiative for the November election.

CAR-BURNING VICTIM IDENTIFIED

The man found dead in a burning car in an orchard west of Chico June 11, later identified as 29-year-old Andrew Curbow (pictured), had a tumultuous go of it before his death.

On June 9, just two days before his body was found near the intersection of Marian Avenue and Dayton Road, Curbow, a husband and father of three, was charged with misdemeanor corporal injury to a spouse, cohabitant or child, according to Butte County Superior Court records. Further, a pretrial hearing for an unrelated misdemeanor petty theft charge was scheduled for June 19.

According to a post from his family on the crowd-funding site FundRazr, Curbow was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, an aggressive cancer of the blood, in February 2012.

Curbow’s cause of death has yet to be released by the Butte County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.

Video sparks controversy YouTube footage of officer’s interaction with crash victim has some crying ‘police brutality’

An onlooker took video of the crash’s aftermath in which Bailey approaches the vehicle and Rosales, who is standing inside with his head barely visible above where the driver’s side door is open skyward. Bailey first asks if anyone else is in the vehicle, to which Rosales answers, “My dog!”

Bailey then starts ordering Rosales out.

The video, which has been edited in at least two spots, shows Bailey getting increasingly urgent in his demands for Rosales to exit the vehicle. A beam supporting an awning above the two men is clearly compromised. Rosales repeatedly mentions his dog, including, “I can’t hear him!” and appears to make no attempt to climb out of the truck. Bailey replies, “I don’t want to get killed because you want to get your dog.”

At this point, Bailey reaches over to grab Rosales’ arm, twists it, and finally is able to pull the 64-year-old up and out of the door amid a

few cries. In the process, Rosales’ leg is caught in a seatbelt and a female onlooker moves in to free him.

All of this takes place in a matter of minutes, as far as can be seen on YouTube. (The YouTube poster did not reply to a request for an uncut version of the video.) The arm twist is what really has people crying “police brutality” all over the Internet and on television news reaching as far away as Britain. But did Bailey act brutally? Critics argue that Rosales, a crash victim, was probably in shock, feared for his dog’s life, and did not deserve to be treated like a criminal.

In a news segment on KRCR following the incident, Rosales claimed Bailey brutalized him and promised to file a lawsuit against the police department.

“Nobody should be treated the way that I was. Period,” Rosales said on air.

“Especially if they are in a car wreck.

The Chico police officer hurt me worse than the accident did.”

Rosales’ son, Joe Rosales, who also lives in Chico, was outraged when he saw the video. He preferred to limit his comments because he is seeking legal counsel for his father, but he did say he believes Bailey was out of line when he pulled his father from the truck.

“Within the context of that situation, that police officer should have never

attempted to get him out of that car,” the younger Rosales said. “He should have called emergency personnel and made that vehicle more accessible.”

Chico Police Lt. Mike O’Brien understands that point of view, but offered a different take on the incident.

“When we look at allegations of excessive force, we have to look at the context—in this case it just wasn’t someone in a vehicle needing help. This was somebody who was in jeopardy and putting the officer in jeopardy as well by not coming out as directed,” O’Brien said during a recent phone interview.

“From what I can tell, that awning had been structurally compromised and it posed a potential threat to both the car accident victim and to Officer Bailey.”

The maneuver Bailey used is called a “twist lock,” which O’Brien explained “we use all the time in doing searches.”

“When we do what we call a cursory search and we’re patting someone down, that’s a hold we utilize to maintain control of someone,” O’Brien said. “It’s one of the least impactful uses of force that we utilize.”

Bailey’s actions are being inves-

tigated by the Chico Police Department, O’Brien said. Because of that, Bailey was not available for comment.

“It’s kind of unfair, because everyone else gets to comment except him, but that’s the way the system works,” O’Brien said.

In cases where allegations of excessive force have been made, the department uses guidelines set forth in the 1989 Supreme Court decision of Graham vs. Connor, which established a threequestion test to measure whether an officer’s actions should be considered excessive. Those questions, according to police news website PoliceOne.com, involve the severity of the crime believed to have been committed; whether the suspect presents an immediate threat to officer or public safety; and if the suspect was resisting arrest or attempting to escape.

“We look at Graham vs. Connor because it speaks to the mindset of the officer and the facts and circumstances at the time he or she is utilizing that force,” O’Brien explained. “We look at the totality of the circumstances, not just a segment of them.”

Rosales’ son said he’s pleased the police department is investigating Bailey’s actions.

“I want the truth to come out,” he said. “I hope whoever has done these things is held accountable for them. It’s just not right. I feel like my dad was abused.”

Like many of the Internet commenters, he maintains that as the victim of a crash, the elder Rosales should not have been treated as he was by Bailey.

“I know how it’s being played out— we have an accident victim, and an officer using force. For some people that doesn’t make sense,” O’Brien said. “You have to look at it not only from the very surface, but deeper—what was in the officer’s mindset at the time? What were those details that were causing him to react in the way that he did?”

Until the investigation is completed, the jury will be out on whether Bailey’s use of the twist lock and pulling Rosales from his vehicle was warranted. In the meantime, it’s sparked a lively discussion about how police and citizens interact in different situations.

The son assured the CN&R that his dad’s dog is fine. His father, however, is still recovering from the ordeal.

“This [video going viral] may be a good thing in the sense that it allows us to have a rational conversation about police work and the sometimes unpleasant side of police work,” O’Brien said.

“Uses of force are not always pleasant to see. It can be shocking, and difficult for people to see, but it doesn’t make it wrong. We have to be able to have that conversation as a society. When it comes to police work, it’s a tough job and sometimes we need to use force.” Ω

A decent account Supervisors adopt a healthy-looking budget week after the Chico City Council Otheirneheard a rather dreary annual budget report, counterparts on the Butte County Board

of Supervisors were painted a relatively rosy economic picture.

The city is looking at a $15 million deficit while the county’s budget is balanced and totals about $475 million. In fact, among the actions requested of the board was to provide direction to staff “that if the general fund balance available exceeds $15,565,000, the additional amount, up to $1 million, will be used to increase the general fund reserve.”

That reserve is projected to be $5.5 million, said Paul Hahn, the county’s chief administrative officer. He said the county is “on a path toward fiscal stability while it continues to address long-term fiscal challenges.”

Hahn said the total budget is a bit less than in recent years because $25 million to $30 million in funding sources such as the Affordable Care Act have been shifted from the county to the state. Federal funding generated by the leasing out of jail cells and beds for federal inmates also has disappeared, Hahn said.

“We now need those beds for our own inmates,” Hahn said, noting that the statefunded AB 109 Prison Realignment Program has taken its share of the jail facilities with the court-ordered transfer of state prisoners to county jails.

“We now have no contracts with the federal government for the jail beds,” he said.

“That was $2 million a year in general fund

revenue we are no longer getting.”

Since the budget was first put together earlier this year, some adjustments have been made. The general fund balance included the freeing up of $523,283 from the state prisonrealignment plan for other uses. Plus, higherthan-anticipated property-tax receipts increased general purpose revenues—money not earmarked for specific purposes—by $1.3 million. Hahn credited the department heads for contributing to the balanced budget and said the fiscal health of the county is in good hands.

“This idea that budgets take just a few months of the year is wrong,” he said. “This is a year-long activity and the people in this room are the ones that make it work and they deserve a great deal of thanks that we can put this document in front of you, hopefully with little controversy.”

The board voted unanimously to adopt the budget and the only thing that came close to controversy was Supervisor Maureen Kirk’s request to continue to fund year-round operations at the Cohasset fire station, particularly in this time of drought. But Supervisor

Bill Connelly said if he went along with that his constituents in places like Clipper Mills would ask for the same. Supervisor Steve Lambert said those who choose to live in the rural areas of the county shouldn’t expect all of the same services that are provided to city dwellers.

The city of Chico’s proposed budget included reducing funding for the Chico branch of the county library from the $100,000 it received last year to $75,000, which could mean a reduction in the library’s hours. But Hahn directed staff to hold off on making a decision on the hours until sometime next year, because the funding needed to keep the library open at its current level may well be available by then through the county.

He said the budget reflects the county’s dedication to public safety, with almost 70 percent of the general fund expenditures put toward the sheriff, district attorney and probation offices. In addition, development services including the Public Works and Code Enforcement departments are restoring their office hours, which had been cut back drastically in recent years, “back to the prerecession level,” Hahn said.

Hahn also noted that last week it came to light that the county’s unemployment level has fallen to 7.9 percent, the lowest it’s been since 2008.

“We still have a lot of people unemployed, but we are seeing positive signs,” he said. “There still are some challenges, there still are some gaps that we need to address, but the overall trend is continuing—much slower than I wish it was, but it is in the right direction.”

While the budget news at this point is good, Hahn said, there are still some “cautionary tales and challenges” ahead due to the uncertainty and instability of the state and federal budgets.

he people of Butte County “T ordain” are words that local fractivists are not likely to soon

forget. The absence of that sixword phrase, coupled with the lack of some bold typeface, may be enough to kill a grassroots effort to put the future of local hydraulic fracturing in the hands of Butte County voters.

On June 16, County ClerkRecorder Candace Grubbs sent a letter informing members of FrackFree Butte County (FFBC) that the petition filed to put a fracking ban on the November ballot—signed by more than 10,000 county residents—was rejected due to “various facial defects.” Specifically, the petition failed to include a mandatory “enacting clause” and didn’t meet “formatting requirements regarding bold face type,” which violates Elections Codes 9124 and 9105, respectively.

Grubbs’ letter to the petition’s proponents explained that, after conferring with county counsel, she agreed the document didn’t pass muster. She also said she didn’t have the discretion to waive the defects, which must be done through court proceedings.

Issues with the petition were first brought to Grubbs’ attention in a complaint filed June 9 by Sacramento-based law firm Nielsen, Merksamer, Parrinello, Gross & Leoni LLP, on behalf of Californians for a Safe, Secure Energy Coalition. The coalition represents dozens of California businesses, community agencies and other groups opposed to bans and strict regulatory measures on the controversial process of hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), in which water and chemicals are forced into the earth to remove oils and natural gas from shale. Several oil and energy companies, including the Western States Petroleum Association, are also part of the coalition.

a lot of people have put a lot of effort into this,” said FFBC spokesman Dave Garcia in a phone interview. “But then we have a powerful law firm from Sacramento funded by Big Oil obstructing and railroading the democratic process, and our members are outraged by that.

“We understand Candace Grubbs is doing her job, but we feel the county should honor the voice of the people and allow this to go forward.”

Garcia said the group takes some responsibility for the petition being sent back: “We’re a grassroots organization and have never [attempted a ballot initiative] before, and it was our decision to try to do this among ourselves, and locally. That appears to have been a bad decision, because we didn’t get everything right.

“On the other hand, these are superficial problems, and inconsequential compared to the actual language of the initiative, which is sound.”

Garcia said that, as of Tuesday (June 24), the group was weighing its options on how to proceed. He said the FFBC’s steering committee would decide in the next few days whether to file a writ with the court to have the requirements waived, but fears a legal battle with deep-pocketed adversaries.

“Filing the writ doesn’t mean the judge will side with us, and it’s a very expensive process,” Garcia said. “Since the beginning, we had almost no money whatsoever, and people on the steering committee took money from their own wallets

to put into the kitty to be able to run this campaign.”

By comparison, the initiative’s adversaries are a proverbial Goliath to the FFBC’s David.

According to a Feb. 3, 2014, article in the Sacramento Business Journal, Nielsen, Merksamer, Parrinello, Gross & Leoni LLP is the third largest recipient of lobby dollars in the state, raking in $5.1 million last year. The same article notes the Western States Petroleum Association was the top spender of lobby dollars in California in 2013, with $4.7 million spent on lobbying activities.

Sabrina Lockhart, spokeswoman for Californians for a Safe, Secure Energy Coalition, said her organization opposes bans because fracking can help lead the nation away from dependence on foreign oil and is a boon to the state’s economy. Sacramento-based Lockhart also provided, and is listed as the contact on, a press release issued June 5 by Butte Citizens Against Higher Energy, a local extension of the statewide profracking coalition. Lockhart said that press release, which claims the Butte County ban would drive up energy costs and put jobs in jeopardy, was released in response to the petition being filed.

Garcia noted that the county Board of Supervisors already has voted 4-1 to move toward a fracking ban, and said his group may focus its efforts in that direction. “[The supervisors] could adopt our initiative, draft their own initiative, or take other courses of action to stop fracking from happening here,” Garcia said. “It’s apparent that both citizens and elected officials alike are very concerned about this issue, so either way, we aren’t giving up.”

Of chief concern Interim fire chief reimagines how department serves Chico hen it comes to fire protection, Chico isn’t quite W like its neighboring rural communities, particularly given the makeup of its downtown and the south cam-

pus neighborhood, where a fire could leap between tightly packed businesses or Victorian houses and destroy an entire block in a flash.

During an interview at Fire Station 1 on Salem Street, Interim Fire Chief Shane Lauderdale said he’s acutely aware of the fire risks specific to Chico’s core.

“Some people look at Butte County Fire Department and say, ‘Wait a minute, they offer fire protection with a two-person engine company; why can’t we do it here?’ Well, we have a different fire-protection profile than Butte County,” he said. “Here, we have a fire problem much more like a bigger city, but we’re not a big city. We have the threat of concentration.”

Lauderdale, 47, admitted that, since former Interim Chief Keith Carter retired in April and he assumed the department’s top spot, it’s been a challenge to “tailor a fire-protection model to this community.”

In his early tenure as chief, he’s been tasked with providing Chico with better fire protection on a tight budget, a challenge he has risen to by all accounts, said Interim City Manager Mark Orme.

“Traditional modes of operation in local government are what people tend to lean toward,” he said.

“But a creative approach to serving the public with the limited resources we have is going to be the trend in the future, and I see that Chief Lauderdale is willing to work with his firefighters in looking for solutions.”

Perhaps the best example of the department’s

willingness to adapt is a pilot program set to launch July 1. Dubbed the Fast Response Squad, a two-person team will be assigned to a “mini fire engine” on a pickup-truck frame that will respond to medical emergencies in the downtown area, in place of sending out a full-sized fire truck.

Using the pickup could be a huge cost-saving measure. Of incidents firefighters responded to last year, more than 96 percent didn’t involve a fire, according to a department report.

The pilot program was made possible by a $5.3 million Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant secured in February.

With the funding, the department has hired 14 firsttime firefighters, who will graduate during a ceremony in the City Council Chambers on Friday (June 27).

The boost in staffing will reduce overtime hours, Lauderdale said, and help keep the department’s yearly compensation for overtime under $300,000, as per Chico City Council mandate.

Even with the new firefighters—which will bump the numbers to 66 firefighters over five stations— Chico will fall short of per-capita industry standards, which call for seven fire stations, each staffed by 28 firefighters, for a city of Chico’s population, Lauderdale said.

“But that’s unaffordable, and we all know that,” he said. “So, instead of having that large standing army of firefighters, we’re going to focus on special forces.

We’re going to have a smaller, leaner, meaner organization.”

Chico Fire’s ailing fire trucks also represent

a pressing need. The department’s two quint ladder trucks—equipped with rescue equipment, a water tank and a pump—are well past their expiration dates. The trucks should be replaced every 10 years; truck 5 is 13 years old and spent more than 200 days undergoing repairs this past year. Meanwhile, truck 1, also more than 10 years old, isn’t in much better shape. There was a recent 60-day stretch in which both trucks were out of commission.

“In this community in particular, that risk is not acceptable,” Lauderdale told the council during last week’s budget session. The panel approved the purchase of a $1.2 million fire truck, and while that doesn’t sound like much of a cost-saving measure, it is— the new truck will effectively replace both truck 5 and a fire engine the department has been lacking since 2010. Lauderdale hopes to place the order by July 15, and the truck should be delivered in 10 to 12 months.

The task of appointing a permanent fire chief is the city manager’s. Should Lauderdale apply, Orme said, he would “absolutely” be considered for the job.

“I have no reason to doubt his ability and competence level to lead that department,” he said. “Nothing has led me to believe otherwise.”

U.S. CARE LAGS BEHIND PEERS

A new report ranked the U.S. last in overall quality of health care and access among 11 industrialized countries, despite having the most expensive care.

In 2011, the per-capita health spending in Britain, which ranked first overall in the report compiled by the Commonwealth Fund, was $3,406, compared to $8,508 per person in the U.S., according to SFGate.com. Switzerland and Sweden rounded out the top three, while Canada and France were ranked just above the U.S. The researchers noted that the U.S. fared poorly due to a lack of access to primary care and overall inefficiencies, though provision in the Affordable Care Act may boost its ranking in the future.

Financial barriers to care also factored into the report, as more than a third of U.S. adults reported skipping a recommended test or treatment due to cost concerns.

FEMALE INMATES ILLEGALLY STERILIZED

A recently released state audit confirmed previous reports that dozens of female inmates in California’s prison system have been illegally sterilized.

Lawmakers requested the audit after the Center for Investigative Reporting found that physicians contracted by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation had sterilized 148 female inmates without consent between 2006 and 2010, according to California Healthline.

State Auditor Elaine Howle concluded that 39 of the 144 tubal ligations performed in fiscal years 2005-06 and 2012-13 did not include signed consent paperwork required by state law.

In 27 cases, the inmate’s physician did not sign a consent form stating that the prisoner was mentally competent, understood the procedure and had waited the required waiting period of 30 days.

Of the women sterilized, most had been pregnant five or more times and had lower than a high school reading level.

ADDICTED TO UV RAYS?

Frequent sunbathing could trigger the same chemical reaction as drug addiction, according to a recent study published in the journal Cell.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School concluded that basking in sunlight produces endorphins—which are also produced by drug use—and that experiments on mice showed repeated UV-ray exposure led to addiction in the animals, according to BBC News. Indeed, when the researchers gave the mice drugs to block opioids, they displayed symptoms of withdrawal such as shaking.

Previous studies, including one that found 1 in 3 college students who use tanning salons meet the definition of addiction, support the research team’s hypothesis.

However, the mice did not seek out UV rays the way a drug addict would, and other scientists are skeptical, including Dr. David Belin at the University of Cambridge.

“You would have people who lose their jobs because they spend their day on the beach,” he said.

Jury’s still out on health implications of e-cigarettes and vaporizing nicotine by

get the nicotine he craves. He’d tried to quit smoking before, and had been successful for long stretches, but the scene he inhabits as a musician and audio engineer would always lure him back.

He made another attempt seven weeks ago, putting down traditional cigarettes in favor of the electronic variety. He says he felt his lungs clear within a week, and by maintaining the ritual of smoking, he hasn’t had to change his patterns as dramatically as he did when he tried quitting with nicotine patches or gum.

Price, 48, hasn’t smoked a cigarette since he started vaping several months ago.

His wife, Karen, a heavier smoker than he, also made the switch to vapor.

“Like all addictions, there’s an inherent understanding that it’s harmful for you, but there’s the addictive side of it that’s telling the brain, ‘Discard that information, give me what I want,’” said Price, who runs Electric Canyon Studios in Butte Creek Canyon.

“Especially with smoking, it’s in the back of your mind that it’s bad for you. Of all the deliberate things I do on a daily basis, it’s probably the one that’s going to take me out. I want to improve my [chances].”

Before he started vaping, Price conducted research online and came away feeling

assured that the liquid nicotine compounds are safer than tobacco.

Not everyone agrees. There is a major split in the medical and scientific community over the safety of electronic cigarettes and vaping. Just last week, 129 physicians wrote the World Health Organization to encourage a strict regulatory stance on e-cigs. That came in response to a letter from 53 scientists to the WHO saying the opposite: that e-cigs should not be regulated like tobacco cigarettes because they represent a safer alternative that is “part of the solution, not part of the problem.”

Because electronic cigarettes and vaping represent relatively new technology, research is scarce and results have been contradictory: University College London found that e-cig use reduces smoking, but two other studies (published in separate journals, JAMA Internal Medicine and Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology) determined there’s no such connection.

So, amid the haze of uncertainty,

should smokers use electronic cigarettes to kick the habit? Experts in the field are wary.

“It’s very important that people understand that e-cigarettes are completely unregulated,” said Erika Sward, director of National Advocacy for the American Lung Association. “There is no oversight of what is in them—what people are inhaling when they are either using them or sitting next to someone who is using one—and they are a tobacco product. They contain nicotine and other chemicals, and the health impact is still to be determined.”

A key indicator that e-cigs are not official smoking-cessation devices is that they have not been designated as such by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Many surgical procedures can now be done through a one centimeter incision in the belly button, and patients can go home in a matter of hours.

Dr. Arin Bunchien has been with Feather River Hospital for one and a half years. He comes from a family of medical practitioners, from his Aunt, an acupuncturist, to his wife, a nephrologist (kidney specialist).

Dr. Bunchien is also committed to treating the whole person and often finds himself working with his patients beyond the normal duties of a women’s health specialist. He often advises his patients on adopting a healthier diet, and recommends exercise, “Weight lifting helps to prevent osteoporosis later in life, and I often encourage my patients to try yoga,” Dr. Bunchien told us.

When asked why he became a doctor, Dr. Bunchien answered directly and sincerely, “I want to help people. To fix problems.”

cig manufacturer has submitted its products for the FDA evaluation that patches and gums have undergone.

Bruce Baldwin, a smoking cessation instructor with the Butte County Office of Education, also views vaping with a skeptical eye.

He’s concerned about smokers using e-cigs in conjunction with, not in lieu of, tobacco. Like Sward, he’s also worried about the unknown ingredients of the various vapors.

“Let’s not make the same mistake we made with cigarettes,” Baldwin said. “Let’s assume [e-cig use] is bad for you, regulate it as such, and if over time it turns out that it’s not as harmful as cigarettes, we can always ease the restrictions.

“But to allow electronic cigarette companies to do all the same things we allowed tobacco companies to do 100 years ago seems foolish to me. We saw the result of that.”

Sward agreed: “We are seeing the whole tobacco industry playbook being trotted out again.

They’re glamorizing the product; they’re encouraging people to switch instead of quit; they’re using celebrity endorsers and candy flavors. We’re also seeing a lot of industry-funded research— that was a favorite tactic of the tobacco industry.”

At the push of a button, the pen heats up the oil or herbs to create a vapor that is inhaled. Most vape shops offer a variety of flavored oils, as well as oils with varying amounts of nicotine, including zero.

of decreased smoking. Surveys of 11th-graders at several county school districts found that e-cig users are at least twice as prevalent as cigarette smokers.

“That really scares me,” Baldwin said. “Let’s keep this stuff out of the hands of kids.”

Sward says the American Lung Association is pushing for federal oversight of e-cigs “as soon as possible. We’re very troubled by the doubling of usage in one year. No e-cigarette is safe and effective in helping smokers quit.”

Price, who’s been vaping for less than two months, is unsure how long he will continue to use nicotine vapor in lieu of smoking, though he said it could be several years. He’s concerned about unknown ingredients, but he’s more concerned about the carcinogens and myriad other hidden compounds in the cigarettes he’s so far been able to cast aside.

“I’ve been doing my research [on e-cig use],” he said “I’ve been trying to find compelling arguments against it; I thought it was too good to be true.” Ω

WEEKLY DOSE Drinking (water) is fun Staying hydrated is one of the simplest and most effective—but easily overlooked—ways to keep your body healthy, and is especially important during hot summer months. For those who often forget to monitor their daily water intake, Elle magazine’s online site (www.elle.com) recently posted “9 water-drinking hacks to make getting hydrated way more fun.”

Some of these include finding a “water buddy,” playing drinking games with water, and adding splashes of juice or chunks of fruit for flavoring. It also encourages investing in your own water bottle, and using a Sharpie to mark minimums of how much should be gone by certain times. Perhaps simplest of all, the site suggests drinking through a straw.

Energizing Africa Local entrepreneur helps provide solar power to the world’s off-grid poor by

nia suburbs to a then-untamed, rugged and rural area of Butte County.

“He was kind of a back-to-the-land hippie in the 1970s, and he bought a rattlesnakeinfested piece of land about 20 miles outside of Oroville,” Pierce recalled during a recent phone interview. “There was no power up there, so we made do with a propane generator and some old car batteries while we built the house. As soon as the first solar subsidies happened, we jumped on it, and my father put in a solar system that ran our house for several years.”

Thirty-odd years later, Pierce found himself packing up his wife and two young children for their own foray into even more remote environs—the East African country of Tanzania. While his father was driven by individual self-determination, the younger Pierce’s goal was to help others for whom living off the grid is not a matter of choice, but circumstance.

Pierce is a co-founder of Off-Grid Electric, a solar-as-a-service company whose mission is to bring light and energy to some of the world’s poorest people. He explained there are 1.5 billion people in the world living without power—mostly in poor, developing nations—with 800 million of those in Africa. Tanzania alone is home to more than 8 million off-grid households.

In East Africa, Pierce said, these off-grid populations burn kerosene lamps, use “cheap Chinese flashlights” and batteries, or heavily polluting diesel generators for light and electricity, with the prohibitive cost of cleaner power a barrier to greater development.

“Our price point is accessible to anyone making a dollar a day or more,” Pierce said, explaining most Tanzanians spend about $1.50 a week on kerosene. Off-Grid Electric installs mostly small-scale solar systems and all the necessary accessories (lights, power outlets, etc.) for homes and businesses, then charges $1.25 a week for unlimited use of the energy generated.

“It’s all about providing the right kind of power for the right price,” Pierce said.

Pierce graduated from Chico State

with a degree in construction management and building science and did his postgraduate work at the University of California Los Angeles. He said he “shared a collective passion to see renewable energy, and solar energy specifically, redefine the way people use, consume and access electricity in the 21st century” with friend and fellow entrepreneur F. Xavier Helgesen. Helgesen and Off-Grid Electric’s third co-founder, Erica Mackey, were attending Oxford University in England, and the three collaborated for a business competition in 2011.

“It was one of those things like that show Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas and all the venture capitalists publicly humiliate them in front of an audience,” Pierce recalled. Most of the other entrants had active, working start-ups, while the Off-Grid Electric crew had just a PowerPoint presentation and written business plan. They still won.

Within months, Pierce, his wife, Keara, daughter Mikayla and son Riland (now 11 and 7 years old, respectively) were settling in outside the Tanzanian city of Arusha, where they spent the next two years. Today, the Pierce family lives back in the Chico area, though Joshua travels to Africa about six times a year, and makes an annual month-long sojourn there with the whole family. The Pierces are heading to Africa for an extended stay in July.

Off-Grid Electric began providing service to its first 500 customers in 2013. In the last 12 months, that customer base has grown to approximately 21,000. He said that’s just the beginning—though currently only in Tanzania, Pierce and his partners plan to expand to other African countries in the not-too-distant future. Pierce shared his lofty overall vision, that in 10 years Off-Grid Electric and other companies like it can help bring power to the entire world.

Off-Grid Electric currently has 110 fulltime employees, 300 independent sales agents, and about 100 service outlets, including storefronts in bigger cities and kiosks in remote village marketplaces. The company’s investors include Silicon Valley heavy hitters like Paul Allen (Microsoft Corp. co-founder) and Pierre Omidyar (founder of eBay), as well as Solar City, the largest provider of solar-as-a-service in the United States. Pierce believes that, with the huge market in developing Africa, Off-Grid Electric could be the biggest provider of solar-as-a-service in the world in just a few years.

When Off-Grid Electric expands into

new areas and communities, Pierce and his cohorts meet with tribal leaders. He said

conducting business on African terms is important to the company, and distinguishes it from other foreign companies looking to make a quick buck.

As for balancing the company’s altruistic goals and sound business practices, Pierce offered his perspective: “There’s a need for both philanthropy and market-based solutions in developing countries. In situations where communities are in crisis—for example, there’s no clean water, or they’re in a conflict zone—we absolutely need nonprofit organizations and governmental bodies to secure the basic needs of those vulnerable populations.

“But we also believe those populations will always remain vulnerable until they can engage with more robust economic activity,” he continued. “Without energy, opportunities for economic growth and any level of prosperity or sustainability are limited.”

On a personal level, Pierce said living in Africa has been “the most richly rewarding, but challenging” thing he could have done with his family.

“The people here are extremely warm, friendly and community-focused,” Pierce said. “It’s given our family an appreciation of how lucky and blessed we are to be born in the West, but also an appreciation for how people rely on each other when they don’t have modern-day technology.” Ω

Lapidary luxuries Chico “rock hound” Barbara Solors remembers discovering a beautiful rock weighing nearly 50 pounds while kicking up rock and dirt along the American River about 40 years ago. It was the biggest piece of “leaverite” she or her husband, Tom, had ever seen. Barbara laughed at the endearing term among rock hunters for finds that won’t amount to anything if cut or sold—pieces to leave right where they are found. She kept it anyway, a testament to her love of rocks and lapidary art—the cutting, polishing and engraving of stones and gems. During the 35 years since the Solors opened Tom’s Rocks & Gifts, they have sold everything from rough rock pieces and cut and polished stones to bookends and jewelry, many of which were discovered on similar rock-hunting adventures and handcrafted later by the Solorses. Though they recently closed their Main Street shop, Barbara will continue to sell lapidary supplies and stone items from their home and participate in gem shows. Tell me about the business.

When my husband worked for an industrial laundry outfit, he started getting into rocks. On our vacations we’d travel and visit rock shops and gem shows. He would go

to this little shop in Auburn and they taught him how to cut and polish rocks. [His] company wanted him to move to Stockton and we didn’t want to move to Stockton.

So we decided, well, we have the equipment, we have the rocks, we love rocks. So we opened a rock shop. And within three months, it started paying all the bills.

What’s it been like having a business for 35 years?

Learning to do business with your husband can’t always be easy. We decided to do his and her shops.

He did his part and I did my part— it worked out great. It’s still a hobby, even though it was a business. That’s why I’m not gonna give it up.

What prompted your change of business from downtown to your home?

I turned 70, for one, and I did not want to sit behind a desk anymore. I wanted to do other stuff while I still have my health. And enjoy my grandkids.

What do you love about the lapidary art form?

I like all parts. I’m not into the

cutting part as much as [Tom] is, because it’s messy. I like more of the slabbing and the shaping and polishing the stones. Going from your rough to your finished piece is really fun. And the rock hunting, that’s the most fun. Even if you find only one nice piece, it’s worth it.

Do you have a favorite rock-hunting memory?

A special one was when we went to Nevada and we were digging for obsidian and sat down on this hill.

Some friends and I were sitting there snacking and we looked out and there was a huge herd of wild mustangs running down the ravine below. That was neat. It was like something you see on westerns. I mean, there must have been a hundred or more of them.

What’s one of the most unique things you have sold?

I had a huge, 6-foot-long dinosaur leg bone. We don’t know what kind of dinosaur it was from. I wish, now, I still had it.

This is my first column as a Mrs. and I am certainly in wedded bliss.

One of the first tasks for me and my husband, Nick, as a married couple is to unwrap the oodles of wedding presents piled in our guest bedroom. We opted for a traditional wedding registry. Both of us lived on our own for more than a decade, but most of our household possessions are still hand-me-downs from parents, friends and former roommates. We decided we wanted to embrace marriage by having at least two coffee cups that matched and wine glasses that don’t have a bank logo on them.

Every wedding website I read had some insight on wedding registries, whether it was the number of items to register for, must-haves, or the number of stores to register at. As a domestically challenged bride, I won’t begin to give advice on the content of registries, but I will share that the best decision I made about our registry was to include a locally owned business.

In addition to two big-box stores, we registered at Collier Hardware.

We had positive interactions with all three stores, but the experience at downtown’s Collier was unparalleled. There are no scanner guns at the store. Instead, you walk the creaky hardwood floors with a clipboard, pen and paper, handwriting the SKU numbers for each item you want.

Some brides may find that cumbersome. I found it refreshing. It made Nick and me more deliberate about what we were choosing, instead of getting into materialism-overload and scanning every bar code in sight.

A few weeks after we completed our registry, I got a phone call from Collier. They wanted to deliver a gift and were making sure I would be home to receive it. I was stunned. Up until that point, I was just happy that UPS was leaving the deliveries from the other stores out of the way of the sprinkler.

The delivered present didn’t come with a card and I went through a minor panic wondering how to get a thank-you note to the sender. So I popped into Collier hoping they could help, thinking it was a long shot. One of the owners was behind the counter and quickly tracked down the name on the check that was used for the purchase. I left Collier knowing that the store’s great customer service stems from the top.

These are the kinds of experiences people love about shopping locally, in addition to keeping sales tax dollars closer to home. Collier Hardware fit our taste and style, but Chico abounds with locally owned options for registries, including Zucchini and Vine, The Galley, and Little Red Hen. These are also my favorite places as a wedding guest to find great gifts, especially because they usually offer free gift wrapping. And, thanks to the generosity of our friends and family, I have a lot of unwrapping from Collier to do over the next few days.

n this week’s cover story focusing on entrepreneurs, the CN&R spoke with Chico businesspeople who, for the most part, fly under the radar. That’s because their tech-industry ventures lack traditional storefronts and don’t rely on the local economy to support them.

Instead, the folks in this burgeoning segment of Chico’s business community work behind the scenes, electronically, building and growing niche companies most locals don’t know exist.

In this, our first Entrepreneurs Issue, we introduce

F

or Marc Lewis of Chico, each new business venture has served as a stepping stone for something greater. His struggling T-shirt company unexpectedly led him into the realm of social media, and now a mobile application of his design is on the verge of a national launch.

But it’s unlikely many locals know anything about the self-described serial entrepreneur. That’s partly because his company, Social Media 180, generally operates on a national level—catering to Fortune 500 companies, celebrities and athletes—but also because, until recently, it was based out of his bedroom.

Lewis, 34, developed an entrepreneurial spirit early on. As an 8-year-old, he devoted weekends to washing cars, at times earning $100 or more. At age 13, after inventing a short snowboard leash to connect boots to bindings, he recruited his parents’ help in attempting to file a patent, but someone beat him to it by about six months.

“I knew I was going somewhere,” he said.

“Entrepreneurship has always been in my blood.”

That’s not to say his path was clear-cut.

He worked in a forensics lab after earning a bachelor’s degree in physical anthropology from Chico State, but “burned out” after several months.

“Working on dead bodies every day,” he said, “just wasn’t something I wanted to do my whole life.”

And so Lewis ventured into business with a wholesale-to-retail clothing company that sold T-shirts at mixed martial arts (MMA) events. It never quite got off the ground. A breaking point came during an event in which he spent thousands of dollars on shirts and failed to recover the investment.

“It was like, ‘OK, I’m done with this,’” he said with a laugh.

Opportunity came knocking that same day. Lewis got a call from three friends who wanted his help opening an MMA gym; he Marc Lewis works in his home office, where he oversees the design of social media applications through his company, Social Media 180.

would oversee business matters while his friends would coach fighters and compete in events themselves. Lewis agreed, and in 2006 the partners opened StandAlone Mixed Martial Arts Academy on the corner of Ninth and Cherry streets.

Lewis began marketing for the gym using Google AdWords—those paid listings at the top and side of Google search results—using the coding experience he had begun accruing as an ambitious 12-year-old.

“All these local businesses started hitting me up and asking, ‘How are you always at the top of the Google search page?’” he said.

Lewis started taking on side work directing search-engine traffic to local businesses, with one referral leading to another. His services eventually were enlisted by Devotion Vodka, a company out of Red Bank, N.J., looking to expand its social media following.

Lewis did so in short order, building the company’s Facebook likes from just a handful to more than 40,000 in a few months.

The vodka gig led to a referral at Advanced Micro Devices, a Fortune 500 company based in Sunnyvale that develops computer processors. Around that time, Lewis sensed that his side project had taken off.

“It got to the point where it was too much; StandAlone became a weight,” he said. “So I sold back my ownership. Everything’s amicable and we’re all friends, but I just had to continue on with this company.”

Social Media 180, which officially launched in 2007, demanded Lewis’ full focus in the years to follow. For months on end, he worked out of his bedroom in front of multiple computer screens, sometimes for 12- or 14-hour stretches.

In doing so, he carved out a niche.

Lewis used an application he developed for musician and film producer Rob Zombie to explain his business model. Zombie had recently offered fans the chance to appear in his latest movie, The Lords of Salem, through a contest that Social Media 180 designed and embedded into Facebook. Nearly 40,000 people signed up for the contest, all of whom perhaps unwittingly turned their profile information over by clicking on the “sign up through Facebook” button.

“People don’t usually know that if you connect with the Facebook button, and you don’t read the terms of service, you’re giving someone else all of that information,” Lewis said. “And that information is invaluable [to the company] because they’ll be able to take that data and do very targeted marketing.”

When a company has a specific product they want to sell, Social Media 180 tracks exactly who went from the contest page to the company’s website and completed a purchase, thereby demonstrating return on investment. “Our model has proven you can use social media to generate income for dirt cheap,” he said.

Lewis briefly opened an office in downtown Chico, but has since cut costs by outsourcing the work to two teams of 10 people in India and a two-person team in Sacramento, allowing him to “rotate the work around the world.” Since referrals have continued generating new deals, he’s never needed a sales team.

the process of developing a mobile application called HelloTel. The concept: Users check into a hotel, load the app and join a highly localized social network. From there, they’re presented with a main feed similar to that of Facebook or Twitter, allowing them to interact with others staying at the hotel—those who’ve also downloaded the app. Though Lewis designed a business-networking aspect into the application, he conceded it will mostly be used for other, lessprofessional purposes.

“I do know people are going to use it on the hook-up side,” he said, “but I definitely came at it from that business angle so you can network with all kinds of people.”

Lewis said the contacts he developed through Social Media 180 will allow him to launch a national marketing campaign to correspond with the app’s release in a few weeks. One aspect of the campaign will specifically target mobile users who are currently traveling; from there, he hopes the app will “go viral.”

Lewis’ hard work has already paid off.

About a year ago, he bought a house on 2 acres in north Chico and moved out of his apartment. (Now, his office and bedroom are separate spaces.) And if HelloTel is as successful as he hopes, he may not need to work at all.

That doesn’t mean he won’t keep an eye out for the next potential opportunity.

“A lot of people start a business and then that’s what they do; they’re married to it,” he said. “I like starting companies, making them profitable, selling them, and then moving on to the next idea.”

In 2010, Auctiva was acquired by Alibaba Group—a Chinese e-commerce company whose sales in 2012 rivaled those of eBay and Amazon put together. Alibaba is slated to go public—in one of the largest initial public offerings in American history—sometime this year.

Ever the entrepreneur, Schlicht, who remains Auctiva’s CEO, is also involved in a new Alibaba-backed startup, currently in beta, called 11 Main (11main.com)—an online retailer that, according to its website, offers a “hand-selected collection of specialty shops and boutiques not available anywhere else.”

As for advice to those interested in launching a startup, Schlicht said that good timing and knowing which areas of business are growing fast are key to being a successful entrepreneur.

“Find something you have a passion for,” he said. “You’ll need it, because after that you’re going to have to work your rear off, so you’d better really like it. Look for ways to make something better, easier, faster.

Never let anyone tell you it can’t be done.

Auctiva CEO took a risk that paid off eff Schlicht came upon eBay years ago when he was getting ready to move and needed to sell some things. He found the online auction site somewhat difficult to use, especially the amount of time it took to make a listing look nice.

That’s what sparked the idea that led to his now-thriving Chico business: Auctiva.

Schlicht, then a computer programmer in the Bay Area, decided to build software to automate the listing process, making it faster and easier for clients to sell their wares.

“I started writing the software in March [of 1998], I put out a beta in August, and I started selling it in December. By July of ’99, I was already making more doing that than I was making as a software engineer for PeopleSoft,” Schlicht said recently by phone.

“I was going to work every day, and I had all these features that customers were asking for, and I was like, ‘Why am I going to work when I’m making like twice as much doing this?’”

It wasn’t long before Schlicht hired his first two employees. Today, he employs close to 200 people. “It was nice that it grew so quickly; it kind of forced me into business at that point,” said Schlicht, native Local a ParadiseLocal Local and Chico State graduate.

In the early days, Auctiva was based in Oakland, while Schlicht lived in San Mateo.

When three competitors who’d raised millions in venture capital started giving away their products for free to get customers, Schlicht gave up his office space and apartment and moved back to Chico, where he already owned a home and where the business is now based.

“I moved back to hunker down and save money; now two out of three of those competitors have merged with us over time, and I’m the boss,” Schlicht said.

Auctiva’s program was originally available as software. These days, the company’s services—such as image hosting, billing support and scheduled listings—are accessible via its website for fees ranging from about $3 to $20 a month. Some services are free.

Ultimately, they did not purchase that bar, but the seeds for The Handle Bar were born then and after a lot of VERY late nights working to put a company together, the rough makings of Chico’s first specialty beer bar began taking shape. The first 6 months were a bit of a roller coaster.

They opened on a shoestring budget, and for the entirety of the first year they sunk every dollar made right back into the business to upgrade equipment, improve décor and to hire more and better staff. f Jeff Sierra isn’t in his office, there’s a chance he’s taking a “walking meeting,” strolling down Humboldt Avenue, next to the neighborhood park that sits just across the street from his business, Design by Humans.

Chicoans who haven’t heard of DBH, as Sierra referred to the business during a recent interview, are in good company. This reporter heard about it only recently, though DBH has been locally owned since 2011 (previous owners operated out of Irvine for about four years).

“I don’t think anyone has a clue we’re here,” Sierra said.

Over the years, the operation steadily and quietly has built an impressive empire in the world of T-shirt sales in collaboration with thousands of artists from around the world— more than 15,000 since the company began.

Sierra spoke about DBH from his office in the company’s headquarters in a recently remodeled warehouse—wood and metal elements in the modern-industrial design give the place a distinct startup feel.

The business supports 18 employees.

Sierra, a 34-year-old Grass Valley native who came to Chico for college, has an entrepreneurial background. He started Chico Web Design back in 2004, but after years in that service industry, felt it was time to move on to something else. Design by Humans fit the bill.

Sierra, the company’s managing partner, came aboard in 2011, helping the business evolve into a streamlined operation that’s unique in a ubiquitous industry. As Sierra explained, Design by Humans—which also sells sweatshirts, phone cases and art prints—now employs a print-on-demand process.

“That allows us to cut down on waste and allows customers to get designs on any color of T-shirt,” he said.

It’s revolutionized the business, he explained, because there’s now no inventory waiting to be purchased. That’s eliminated a lot of risk. “Inventory is what

kills businesses, because you’re investing capital on products sitting on a shelf that you’re hoping sell,” he said. And as he pointed out, what doesn’t sell gets discounted.

Conversely, under DBH’s model, customers simply order the design they want from the several thousand on the company’s website (www.designbyhumans.com), choose a color, and the rest of the process is automated.

The shirts are printed locally as well, at Fifth Sun (5sun.com), a company based in north Chico that specializes in producing licensed and private-label apparel for large retailers. They also are packaged and sent from that location. Fifth Sun’s owner, Dan Gonzales, is Sierra’s partner in Design by Humans.

Behind the scenes at DBH, designs are curated by the company’s creative team, which Sierra noted has recognition in the industry for the quality of art chosen. In other words, the company’s doing big things whether Chico knows it or not. But Sierra doesn’t seem to mind that the company flies under the radar.

It’s the home of ChicoStart—a business incubator providing the physical space, technical support and mentoring for entrepreneurs to help them get their ventures off the ground.

During a recent interview in the ChicoStart office, Wendy Porter, managing director, explained her strong suit is helping others develop their business plans.

“I’m really good at coming up with a business idea, putting it together and doing the operations,” she said. “But then when it comes to marketing that business, I’m just not that great.”

Porter’s work experience includes 11 years as an information technology professional with Hewlett-Packard and more than three years as a senior contributor at Shasta QA, a software testing company with a Chico office.

She’s launched a few startups herself, but found that her strengths are more in helping others than in managing her own business.

ChicoStart’s beginnings go back to last August, when local businessman Kevin Kinell and Steve Gonsalves, chairman of Innovate Northstate, got together and rented the empty city office space that formerly housed various Butte County government departments. They opened ChicoStart for business the following month, initially expecting to attract maybe five businesses.

But very quickly, 11 startup tech companies bought into the concept of provided office desks, Internet access, mail service, WiFi, couches, conference rooms, a kitchen space and lounge area. Plus, there is the benefit of networking with other tech geeks for support, encouragement and brainstorming.

The nonprofit Innovate Northstate was founded about two years ago with the selfproclaimed goal “to assist the region’s most innovative companies who have the largest growth potential garner a larger share of their national and global markets resulting in a more vibrant regional economy.” ChicoStart is a step in that direction.

Porter said ChicoStart rents the office space for $1 a year. The firm then charges its business tenants between $50 and $550 per month, depending on space and technical access.

“Fifty dollars is basically virtual office space, use of the mail slots and invitations to our events,” she said.

“Then there is $150 for our café-style, where you come in and use the Internet and sit wherever there is a spot available. Then there are dedicated spots for $220 and pod spaces for $550. Those are spots where you can leave your computer and seat anywhere from four to nine people.”

Included in the rent for all is access to a printer/copier as well as coffee and other drinks. ChicoStart also has a mentoring program offering the expertise of four in-house mentors: Joe Schneider, head of internal user operations for Facebook; Declan Dunn, a local marketing expert; Chico State business professor Peter Straus; and Kinell, who in addition to launching ChicoStart also previously worked for Auctiva and is “CHICOSTART” continued on page 26

As part of the lease, the city will receive any rent that adds to more than ChicoStart’s operating expenses, but that’s a ways off.

“We pay our utility costs,” Porter said.

“They are not expecting us to reach excess rent until year three of the lease and we currently are not collecting enough rent to meet our operating costs.”

Porter said the city welcomed the business and saw it as having a potentially positive impact on the local economy.

“That is kind of why we made this arrangement with them,” she said. “We thought we’d have at least five companies in here by December 2014. We actually have 11. We have doubled our goal in half the time.”

One of the businesses occupying

space in ChicoStart is a company called CoffeeTable, which is a digital catalog shopping app for the iPad and iPhone. The business was launched in 2011 by Chris Friedland, co-founder of Build.com. Andrew March took over as CEO in May 2013.

“We hooked up with ChicoStart last October,” March said. “We were one of the first tenants. It is much more developed now than it was when we first got in. What attracted us to this space specifically was the ability to contribute to a better entrepreneur ecosystem in Chico and the North State.”

March said there is a lot networking and collaboration that goes on among the different ChicoStart businesses.

“We are one of a handful of companies in here and one of the things I think is interesting and beneficial is the opportunity to talk with all these other people,” he said. “The

collective mind-share we have here is way better than what we would have by ourselves.”

CoffeeTable has three employees in Chico, including March, plus one stationed in San Diego and other staff members who are overseas.

“The goal for us is to come in and establish our operations,” he said. “Obviously, a success story would be to grow to the extent where this place couldn’t handle how many people we would need.”

For now, he said, the office suits the company well.

Other businesses currently renting space at ChicoStart include Student Stock, a social network designed to help students become professional photographers, and Housing Tools, which in its own words, “helps government and nonprofit agencies more effectively assist low-income populations.”

Porter said ChicoStart is a work in progress and that the plan is for the tenants to succeed and expand to the point where they will move to their own office space, making room for new startups.

“There’s no formal process or procedure in place,” she said. At least not yet. “As an incubator, we provide some mentorship then benchmark them along the way with some expectation that they are going make some progress and move on.”

that works for me,’” Banwell recalled. “It involves history, costumes, mechanics and of course the whole fantasy element, all things that I love, so I thought this might be a great genre for me to work in.”

Soon after, Banwell stumbled across a World War II gas mask, and decided to take a shot at the genre, casting components based on the mask’s respirators and goggles, adding bits of metal, and tying it all together into stitched-leather head gear straight from a land of nightmares. He now makes gas masks in various designs, some resembling animals like elephants and aardvarks, and his signature, bird-billed “plague doctor” masks.

He also makes filigreed, lacy-looking leather-cut masquerade face coverings that are as feminine and elegant as his darker works are terrifying.

Banwell started selling his masks through his online Etsy store, and business remains brisk—his creations ranging from about $40 for the masquerade-style pieces up to around $400 for gas masks. Critical acclaim also came fast, and less than a year into mask-making, his creations were featured in the first European steampunk art show, at England’s Oxford University, in 2009. Another recent show in which his work appeared—in Seoul, South Korea—was the first steampunk-themed display in Asia, and was so well-received it is now engaged to move to Beijing soon.

Because decades of Banwell’s career were focused more on commercial ventures, and success came late and fast, he missed a few major pit stops along the way, one of which he’ll be achieving with his upcoming local showing at Idea Fabrication Labs—his first solo gallery opening.

Though Banwell said he communicates with other artists in the genre, he rarely attends conventions or other public steampunk-themed gatherings. “I’m 66 now and kind of slowing down, so to me traveling is not that much fun anymore,” he said.

“But what I really enjoy is making the stuff and having other people appreciate it, so the more time I spend in my shop, the happier I am.”

Banwell admits it’s been strange to find a following and “be discovered” at the age of 60, and credits his late success largely to the Internet.

“If I’d been born 20 years later, maybe I’d have been this successful 20 years earlier,” Banwell mused. “I kind of wish it happened earlier, but life is good now.” Ω

Stolen gear—they played their first show in 1994 using a drum set made out of boxes, a few pieces of wood and coconuts. And brushes with Johnny Law— getting busted near Fargo, N.D., with no insurance or registration, and traveling illegally in the back of a U-Haul trailer with temperatures hitting 150 degrees, hiding behind amps as they crossed the OregonCalifornia border.

“We were young and stupid,” acknowledges Josh.

(I can guess what’s coming next.) “Now we’re old and stupid.”

In anticipation of the band’s upcoming 20th anniversary shows with longtime tourmates Los Canadians (kicking off in Chico, Saturday, June 28, at Monstros Pizza), both bands are releasing a hot-offthe-press split 7-inch—on the Indars’ newly acquired label, Shut Up Records—appropriately titled Tour of the Curse. Black Fork’s four speed-freaky contribu-

tions—which clock in at just under five minutes—were originally recorded with Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong at Berkeley’s Catbox Studios when the fourpiece was knee-deep in the legendary 924 Gilman Street scene that spawned bands like Blatz, Screw 32 and Operation Ivy. Between disintegrating tours, Black Fork recorded one more full-length with Armstrong, 1997’s Rock for Loot for Lookout! Records, before they checked out the following year. The band was snotty, smart and short-lived. And, listening today, still unsung.

“I think some of those lyrics are more relevant today,” Josh says. “Health care sucks, and the country is still run by assholes.”

Over the past few years the band—which also includes East Bay-based drummer Jim “Nastic” Anderson and bassist Cyrus “T Nails” Comiskey—has gotten together for a handful of one-off shows. Now they’re going for it—for five shows at least. The Indars just returned from a weekend of rehearsals in the Bay Area, where they also were interviewed for an upcoming documentary on Gilman (financed by Armstrong). Josh says the reason to do these shows is pretty simple.

“We still love hanging out with those guys and playing. And I realize it’s still a really great punk band,” he says. “Plus, if we don’t get together and do it now, it may never happen.”

One stop on Black Fork’s current West Coast run will be Tijuana, Mexico, where—in grand tradition— the band had all its merch stolen some two decades ago. Shitty at the time, but it turns out all of those records and T-shirts floating around made them some new fans, and Josh says the band still has a following there.

Of course, those who know Black Fork know that they are remembered by fans on this side of the border as well, and there are a fair number of them still out there. Whether that’s enough to keep the band around beyond these five shows remains to be seen.

“We’ll see what happens. It could be great—maybe people will throw money at us,” Josh says, only halfjoking. “Maybe it’ll be a total disaster. In music you can’t say, ‘never.’”

As for avoiding any disasters, they sound a little more certain about that. “That’s not going to happen again,” says Josh with a laugh. “Now we have credit cards.” Ω

Which grill is worthy of your summer?

Fourth of July extravaganzas. Whether it’s painless propane, classic charcoal or perhaps a new fuel option, there are by many factors to consider before Matthew you decide what kind of grill to Craggs buy.

Propane’s pros become obvious the first time you fire up a gas grill surrounded by ravenous partygoers.

Of all the major fuel options, propane gas is the quickest to heat the grill, making it perfect for an impromptu weeknight grilling. And, for slow-and-low barbecuing, gas is a convenient alternative to heating up the house by turning on the oven. The heat disperses evenly with little attention from the user, and controlling the temperature is as easy as turning a dial.

Though propane grills tend to cost more than other options, propane refills are fairly inexpensive and the tanks are easy to store and often do double duty as fuel for camp stoves and lanterns. However, while gas grills are ideal for grilling burgers or hot dogs on short notice, and also allow for easy regulation of separate heat zones, propane doesn’t burn as hot as charcoal and won’t deliver a very satisfying char on a steak or chicken skin. And, of course, the biggest drawback with propane is that its flame gives off no extra flavor like you get from the smoke emanating off charcoal or wood.

But gas does reduce grill-sitting time so that you can join the fun instead of hovering over the smoke all party long. For the everyday backyard party, check out Char-Broil’s Gourmet 3-Burner Gas Grill ($350) with side burner or go big with Kenmore’s 6-Burner Stainless Steel Grill ($500) for an extra 200 square-inches of cooking surface, as well as a ton of front storage.

Conversely, propane’s pros are charcoal’s cons.

Charcoal briquettes are expensive, time-intensive, messy little monsters that rely on intuition, skill and patience to regulate heat. Plus, you’re glued to the grill as you light the charcoal, keep it going, and then disperse the smoldering pile to produce the desired level of heat. A charcoal chimney is an inexpensive necessity, and will help speed up the process as well as negate

the need to use flavor-killing lighter fluid.

But nothing tastes quite like a charcoal-cooked piece of meat. A crispy char and slightly acrid smoky taste takes you back to childhood barbecues, and to parents grilling over open flames beside a lake or beneath the tailgate outside a stadium—the perfect outdoor summer meal from a time before people worried about charcoal-created carcinogens.

Being little more than a metal bowl and a grate, charcoal grills are also cheaper than propane varieties and have fewer parts that could malfunction. While charcoal may be inconvenient to light and clean and monitor, with a little practice a griller can learn to manage flame-ups and navigate heat zones. For serious grillers, and slow-and-low barbecuers, there is no other option. Get the classic Weber 22.5-inch kettle grill ($100), or the updated Weber Performer Platinum ($350, with gas ignition, charcoal bin and steel cart).

Or go retro with the silver PK Grill & Smoker ($300), whose durable, long-lasting design hasn’t changed in more than 60 years.

A relative newcomer to the market that’s becoming popular is wood pellets made from compressed sawdust. They combine the flavor of a wood fire with the convenience of propane grills. Electric fans bring in air that’s heated and pressurized, which ignites the 100 percent natural wood pellets, which come in a variety of hardwood flavors. Quick-cooking items won’t pick up much smoke flavor, but long, low barbecuing of ribs and briskets benefit from the smoky flavor boost as will more delicate dishes like fish and vegetables. The cleanup is minimal, the cost of fuel is comparable to charcoal, and the temperature is easy to control—from steakhouse heat down to a slow smoke.

While they are one of the more expensive options, wood-pellet grills offer a great hybrid of convenience and flavor. Try a backyard version of one of the original wood pellet grills, Traeger’s Junior Elite ($450), or the award-winning Memphis Pro Pellet Smoker ($2,750) with twice the cooking surface for competition-worthy cookouts.

No matter where you pledge your allegiance, the best backyard barbecues are about the friends gathered around the flames and not the fuel feeding them. Just pick a side and dive into summer. Ω

IN THE MIX All You Could Ask For Mike Greenberg William Morrow Mike Greenberg has been a sports commentator on ESPN TV and Radio for a couple of decades.

While working as one half of the popular national morning radio show Mike and Mike, Greenberg had also penned a pair of sports-related New York Times best sellers.

All You Could Ask For is his first novel and it is a departure for him, and definitely exists as a more meaningful piece of work. The story revolves around three women during extremely different parts of their lives: a young newlywed, a 40-year-old mother, and a business exec. Their common denominator is that they all develop some form of cancer. Their lives become intertwined (for better or worse) in some complicated and unexpected ways, and along the way Greenberg showcases an admirable ability to create realistic characters with story arcs that don’t always work out perfectly, just like in real life.

Greenberg wrote the novel for family friend Heidi Armitage, who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in early 2009 and passed away less than a year later. As an additional honor to Armitage’s legacy, 100 percent of the profits from All You Can Ask For go directly to the V Foundation for Cancer Research to help fight breast cancer.

I recently put four on hold and by the next day three of them were on the hold shelf, waiting for me to claim them. The librarians also have connected the site to a wide array of e-resources, from databases and reference libraries to TumbleBooks, a fun reading site for kids. It’s still a pleasure to go to the library, our communal church of literacy, but with the website it’s become much larger and more useful. Check it out.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Visual History Andrew Farago Insight Editions For the past 30 years—from their humble black-andwhite indie-comic beginning through Michael Bay’s upcoming blockbuster—the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have kicked butt across comics, television, film and toy aisles. Andrew Farago, curator of San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum, reveals that what makes the evolution—or should we say, mutation—of the Turtles so fascinating is that it’s a franchise that’s remained relevant for three decades despite constant reboots and the ebb and flow of creative and commercial success. Beautifully presented, the hardcover book is full of sketches, photos, comic panels and inserts that reproduce scripts, fan club letters and convention fliers. For fans, it’s nearly impossible to open a page and not find a fond memory, though the extensive chronicling of the green machines doesn’t shy away from what some view as questionable career choices—the Coming Out of Their Shells live stage show, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, and the fifth turtle, Venus. Having been through so many iterations over the decades, fans naturally cling to their favorite, but Farago’s contextually overarching view of the Turtles’ journey helps to see the forest for the trees. A wonderfully designed art book with just enough interesting factoids, it’s the perfect complement to the empty pizza boxes littering your swanky sewer pad.

Naturally, that music is Cinemark 14, Feather River the driving force of Jersey Cinemas and Boys, yet as the title also Paradise Cinema suggests, the individual 7. Rated R. characters of the four original members are important in the overall story as well.

The diminutive Valli is the Poor one big name in the group, and he is central to everything else here as well. But Fair the other three also get crucial moments of close-up attention in what emerges as an unusually conflicted Good group portrait.

All four are ItalianAmericans from New Jersey, Very Good and with the exception of songwriting whiz Bob Gaudio, they all have done time in jail while still in their Excellent

teens. The script, adapted by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice from their original stage version, develops a quietly nuanced picture of a group that, apart from its music, is driven by disharmony.

Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza), lead guitarist and the band’s original leader, is arrogant and erratic, a controlling force whose self-indulgence very nearly destroys the band. Bassist Nick Massi (Michael Lomenda) is a reflexive team player who, until pushed to the breaking point, is cheerfully indifferent to the others’ roiling ambitions. Gaudio (Erich Bergen), the youngest and most cerebral of the group, immerses himself in the role of Valli’s key musical collaborator.

John Lloyd Young is excellent in the vocal and musical aspects of the Valli role, but the best acting in the film comes elsewhere. Piazza is very good with DeVito’s outsized self-deceptions, and Bergen’s Gaudio is a nice study in half-formed intellect scouting for its main chance. Christopher Walken is fine as the neighborhood honcho who becomes Valli’s Mafia-connected protector. And Mike Doyle makes a striking impression as the openly gay producer/ lyricist Bob Crewe.

The Brickman-Elice script is at its best in moments when the individual Jersey Boys directly address the camera in midaction. And it is at its weakest in scenes of Valli’s besotted domestic life. The latter scenes mark the flat spots in Young’s performance, and the actresses involved (Renée Marino, Erica Piccininni, Freya Tingley), while well-cast, are given little to work with.

Eastwood’s direction is proficient throughout, and part of the movie’s pleasure derives from its success in blending the story’s disparate genres—stylized movie musical, domestic drama with Mafia connections, period piece, rock ’n’ roll romp. Ω

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return as Officers Jenko and Schmidt, respectively, and Ice Cube is back as Capt. Dickson, angry as ever about, well, everything. He explains to his star officers that this time their assignment is to infiltrate a college campus, where they are to locate a drug dealer whose product has been linked to a student’s death. As college freshmen, the two reprise their roles as jock and nerd, frat boy and intellectual (sort of). Jenko joins the football team and Schmidt tries his hand at slam poetry. In the process, they both make connections—one a “bromance,” the other an actual romance—that threaten to fracture their friendship. There is, thankfully, plenty of action as well, from football games to car chases to a particularly hilarious scene in which the pair try to stealthily break into a frat house to install surveillance equipment while high on the drugs whose source they’re trying to find. A notable addition to the cast is Jillian Bell (Workaholics), whose quiet introduction into scenes (“How long have you been sitting there?”) is second in hilarity only to her deadpan delivery.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

A big contributor to the awesomeness of the latest installment in the franchise is the return of Bryan Singer to the director’s chair. Singer piloted the first two X-Men films, and he has a nice command of the characters in their old and younger incarnations. The film starts in the future, where the likes of Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) have been reduced to hiding out in a dark, apocalyptic world where their enemy is a vicious robotic mutant-hunting force called the Sentinels. With help of the powers of Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page), Wolverine travels back in time to the early 1970s, before the Sentinels have gone into production, and before shape-shifting Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) commits a murder that will ultimately bring about the doom of the future. Most of the action takes place in the past, so the younger X-Men: First Class actors get most of the screen time. That means more of the terrific Michael Fassbender’s take on Magneto, and James McAvoy stealing the show as young Xavier/Professor X. Cinemark 14. Rated PG-13. —B.G.

SOUNDS FUN Last weekend marked the summer solstice in these

parts, and with its passing the sun starts heading in the other direction, gradually shortening our gloriously long days as it heads south, taking our summer with it!

Longtime readers know that, for Arts DEVO, that is cause for a brief panic followed by a full mobilization of all my summer-living resources, including a compilation of my annual mix of summer jams.

As always, my only requirement for a summer playlist is that the songs were released for mass consumption sometime after September the previous year—that this is their first summer season. All styles are welcome, just as long as they can find a suitable spot in the rotation between my headphones, car speakers, backyard boombox and public-event loudspeakers during the summer (and yes, Baltimore’s Sun Club is perfect for all occasions, and has to have no fewer than five tracks featured on this year’s list).

First-time homebuyer Josh Lavelle recently closed escrow and moved into a house he bought with all cash. Josh is a freshman in college. He said he “totally lucked out” because his grandfather gave him the money to buy.

“My Grampa told me he wanted to give me money for a house before he ‘croaks,’ as he called it,” said Josh. “‘Croaks.’ Ha ha! That’s a funny word.” I’ll bet his Grampa would say the word gets less funny the older you get.

Investor Hal Iverland bought three homes this year, all cash. “The money I had wasn’t making any interest, so it made no sense to borrow,” he said, “and the housing market is tight on inventory, with lots of competition among buyers. My cash offers tend to beat out the buyers with loans. Sellers will even accept a lower sales price to get the cash deal.”
