I’ve heard Doug LaMalfa speak twice, and I’ve exchanged a few words with him. He listens well to those he serves (industry, especially Big Ag and the fossil-fuel companies). He is quite arrogant. His hubris and myopia will continue to get him in trouble. He can’t help it. He will offer opinions when given the chance, which will amaze by us with his stupidity. Yet, he is cynical enough to tap into the government’s treasury to enrich himself and those who run in his circle. He is loyal to his friends— as displayed by his decision to hire, as chief of staff, his frat-boy dirty-tricks campaign adviser, Mark Spannagel, who

should be managing a 7-Eleven and not the office of one of the 435. LaMalfa takes care of his friends. Great. But who fits into the “one of us” label that he advertised?

Doug LaMalfa is “one of us” if you happen to be a regular caller into the Rush Limbaugh program. I’d say he is “one of us” if you happen to own a farm that’s taken in millions of dollars in subsidies over the last decade or two.

But if you are a woman who believes that you should be able to choose when to start a family, or if you happen to be on food stamps, or if you are a student who needs financial aid, or if you are poor, or if you are gay, or if you lack health insurance, or if you are concerned about the fact we haven’t had a winter in two years, or if you believe it should be easier to vote than it is to buy a gun (and not vice versa), or if you are a hardworking person who doesn’t mind paying taxes so that we can have all the benefits of an educated, healthy society—if you see yourself in any of those categories, guess what? You won’t be joined by Doug LaMalfa. He isn’t one of us. Ω

who qualify for federally subsidized Stafford loans are going to face a sudden doubling of their interest rate, from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent, effective Monday, July 1.

At a time when higher education is becoming increasingly unaffordable, this rate increase will keep many students from entering or continuing in college, and will leave those who graduate with greater debt.

Congressional Republicans and Democrats both said they wanted to avoid the automatic rate hike, but they couldn’t agree on how to do so.

Republicans want to tie the rate to financial-market rates, while the Democrats want Congress to continue setting the rate, but at a lower figure.

The best option at this point is for Congress, when it returns from its July 4 recess, to pass a one-year extension of the current rate.

Neither the Republican nor the Democratic proposal has garnered much support outside the Capitol. In fact, the plan that has generated the most enthusiasm is Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act, introduced in May. It would charge students the same interest rate that banks pay the U.S. Treasury for the money they borrow: 0.75 percent.

Warren points out that the government takes in $51 billion annually in profit from student loans. Why, she asks, are we making money off poor and middle-class college students at a time when big banks can borrow money at such low rates?

A recent poll shows that 83 percent of respondents want to keep student-loan rates from increasing, and almost two-thirds support lowering them to 0.75 percent.

For her part, Warren supports passage of a one-year extension of the current rate. The rest of us can hope that during that time Congress will see the wisdom of using federal funds to help—not hinder—students. Ω

A case for reform We never thought we’d say this, but former Gov. Jeb Bush

(R-Fla.) got it right. In the op-ed in Sunday’s Wall Street Journal, Bush and Clint Bolick, vice president for litigation at conservative policy-advocacy organization the Goldwater Institute, make their case to intractable House Republicans on the merits of the landmark federal immigration bill passed last week by the U.S. Senate.

The bill isn’t perfect, for a number of reasons, including its overzealous border-patrol plan. But it is a step in the right direction to reform a broken system.

From an economic standpoint, Bush and Bolick point out the benefits of the bill, which would give a larger share of visas to immigrants with special skills needed in the U.S. workforce, rather than the current familyreunification preference.

Bolick and Bush argue that the bill supports Republican ideals. It would help grow the nation economically, curb illegal immigration and help secure the border, they write. They point to nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projections that the bill would result in a more than $1 trillion reduction of the federal budget deficit over the next 20 years.

Most important to us, the bill would provide an opportunity to the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants, many of whom came here as children and live and work in the United States in fear of deportation, to gain citizenship. It provides them with a path to legalization, but not without a rigorous process that includes paying fines and back taxes, and undergoing a background check. These individuals would be ineligible for most social services during a 13-year probation period (far too long in our view), but that’s the compromise Senate Republicans—14 altogether, including John McCain of Arizona—came up with to pass the bill.

The House must put partisan loyalties aside and stop using these people as scapegoats. They are a part of the American fabric. And it’s high time they become Americans. Ω

Room with a view I’m pretty sure I have the best view in town of the construction of the First and Second Street Couplet project, at least when it comes to the roundabout that’s going in at the corner of Second and Flume streets. The CN&R building is pretty much ground zero for the reconfiguration of one of downtown’s most-traveled thoroughfares.

And my new corner office, which I moved into on Friday, has an unobstructed view.

It’s been pretty fascinating watching the evolution of the project, beginning with the destruction of the surrounding sidewalks, including the driveway leading to our offices. Giant tank-like excavators made quick work of all that concrete beginning early last month, at times picking up whole sections in a single scoop. New sidewalks have gone in over the past couple of weeks, while the street asphalt was ripped out and hauled off.

For a time, I could imagine what it would have been like in Chico in the days before paved roads. A co-worker and I joked about planting some tomato seedlings in the middle of the street—the soil is that deep-brown loamy kind in which plants seem to grow well. But construction is moving along way too fast for anything to take root.

Over the past few days, earthmovers and an officeshaking compactor have sculpted and flattened the dirt street into the form of a roundabout. As I was working Monday morning, that compactor rattled my sunglasses right off my desk. The work is loud and at times distracting, but I honestly thought it would be much worse.

It won’t be long before more asphalt is laid. After the street opens back up, I’m certain I’ll hear honking horns.

Not everyone is savvy to maneuvering a roundabout, though it’s quite simple: Look left, and yield when necessary.

Speaking of change: Lots of folks are still having a hard time with the departure of Rob Blair, Chico’s favorite former weatherman. Blair left his post at KNVN/KHSL-TV in early May, and we keep getting letters to the editor lambasting the homogenized stations for cutting him loose.

But I’m happy to report Blair is doing just fine. In midJune, he moved down to Long Beach, two blocks from the ocean. His husband, Michael, a junior-high-school teacher, is looking for work, and Blair is planning to go back to school to become a funeral director.

“It’s a service position. I want to, in my heart, continue helping people, so I’m really excited about that,” he said by phone from Disneyland Tuesday morning.

Blair said his days in TV broadcast may be over, but he is looking into radio-show-host opportunities. Either way, he’s not complaining. At 38, he’s had a full career: 24 years in the business.

I’ve interviewed Blair a number of times over the years, including for a short write-up on his getting sacked. He’s a class act, never once disparaging his former employer. The guy has been voted favorite local personality in the CN&R’s Best of Chico contest over and over. I wouldn’t be surprised if he retains his title this year. His fans are that devoted.

Rehabilitation is lacking Re “Fighting for face time” (Newslines, by Howard Hardee, June 27): The article brings up a dangerous point: the lack of total rehabilitation of released prisoners. The recidivism rate in California is a shocking 65 percent. It’s 45 percent nationwide, so obviously the system isn’t working.

Norway’s recidivism rate is only 20 percent, so I suggest we implement their system.

Oh, by the way, I’ve read that crime is up 25 percent locally, so AB 109 didn’t work, either. Since in California most recidivism is due to parole violations, it’s clear that most prisoners are being released without being rehabilitated—and that creates a clear and present danger to the public.

Forget tunnels, go green Re “Looking in the wrong direction,” (Guest comment, by Tony St. Amant, June 27): Southern California needs to be looking west. The Sacramento River twin-tunnels water-diversion project is estimated at $24.5 billion! Northern California farmers, wildlife and salmon will not survive this.

That money would be better spent on green projects of solar and wind, and desalination of ocean water.

Australia, Egypt and other countries are using this green tech to turn deserts into farmland. Please, Gov. Brown, apply this common-sense solution to this never-ending nightmare of Southern California’s evergrowing need.

Keep Chico an arts town I am saddened to hear that Chico’s arts commissioner, Mary Gardner, has been pinkslipped. Without the commissioner, can there be an Arts Commission? The Arts Commission is an important part of our community and serves as a voice for art, artists and galleries, and anyone who comes across art in Chico and is pleased by it.

Luckily, a bunch of enterprising U.S. food manufacturers and processors have met this challenge head-on by developing a great variety of healthful, delicious and convenient veggie burgers and soy dogs. These delicious plant-based foods don’t harbor nasty pathogens or cancer-causing compounds.

DA Mike Ramsey used his resources in conjunction with the Sheriff’s Office to fly around the county looking for new grading intended for cannabis growing.

Ramsey then went to the Department of Public Works and told them [to order the owners to mitigate the problems] and gave the shortest possible deadline (14 days), hoping they could not comply, and he could then prosecute them with a criminal misdemeanor.

If you attempt to talk to the public-works grading department about this, they tell you this is a “new” process and are not sure how it works—and refer you to the DA for information.

What does Ramsey have to do with building-code matters such as grading, and why is he subjugating public works? I think it’s obvious.

The county is retaliating against medical-cannabis growers because they’ve lost the war, and are now just grasping at straws. It’s sad, really.

The Chico Unified School District has received a grant for $1,079,990 from the U.S. Department of Labor to help finance YouthBuild, a program for at-risk 16- to 24-year-olds administered locally by the Academy for Change at Fair View High School.

AFC serves students who have been expelled from other schools, are referred via probation, or are otherwise in danger of not graduating or getting a GED. YouthBuild was initially designed for students to get training and certificates in construction, among other fields. Students learning construction skills are involved in helping build or rehabilitate housing for lowincome or homeless people and families in their communities. The program has recently been expanded to include training in health care and information technology.

The CUSD was one of only seven entities in the state and 68 in the nation to receive a YouthBuild grant.

ATTORNEY ACCUSED OF THEFT

A Chico attorney was in court June 25 to face charges of stealing money from an elderly couple and failing to repay a loan from a client. According to a press release from the Butte County District Attorney’s Office, 65-year-old Alfred W. Driscol III is accused of stealing $87,514 from an elderly couple he represented.

An investigation indicates Driscol agreed in late 2008 to keep $100,000 of the couple’s money in his client trust account. He paid back $12,486, but reportedly sent a letter last August saying he could not pay any more.

Driscol is also accused of getting a client to loan him $40,000 secured with stocks in a business Driscol owned. He reportedly paid back $7,000, and when the client tried to cash in on the stock for the rest of the loan, he learned the statement held to do so was worthless. Driscol is set to enter a plea on July 30.

KLEAN KANTEEN AT AMERICA’S CUP

The 34th annual America’s Cup sailboat race, which is taking place this year in the San Francisco Bay, launching on July 4 with an opening ceremony followed by its challenger series, has a Chico connection.

This year, Klean Kanteen has been named Official Water Hydration Solution and Sustainability Supplier for the nearly three-month-long event, and will be in charge of water-hydration stations dispensing local tap-water to discourage spectators from using single-use plastic water bottles.

The company, founded in 2004 by local artist/inventor Robert Seals and now operated by brother-and-sister team Jeff Cresswell and Michelle Kalberer, sells reusable stainless-steel water containers.

Visibly excited, Provencio related how that morning, the couple sat at their computer repeatedly refreshing the page of a news site, anxiously awaiting the ruling.

“I was burying my head in the pillows; we were really nervous,” Havens said.

As the couple would soon find out, the Supreme Court deemed that a key portion of DOMA—the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by state governments—was unconstitutional in a 5-4 vote. The court also supported a lower court’s ruling on California’s ban of same-sex marriage via Proposition 8, passed in 2008, maintaining that the proposition’s sponsors lacked legal authority to defend the law in federal court after Gov. Jerry Brown’s administration refused to appeal its loss.

News of the ruling made for a celebratory gathering in the plaza, attended by dozens of boisterous and colorfully dressed members of the local LGBT community and their supporters.

Festivities included four speakers and “a lot of

shouting and yelling and joyful noise,” said Thomas Kelem, director of Chico’s Stonewall Alliance. Like Havens and Provencio, Kelem was deeply moved by the morning’s news.

“I found myself being incredibly emotional,” he said. “I was shocked I was reacting so strongly. It felt like the end of a huge struggle. To get this done and over with, let people get married already, and get the federal government in line was great.”

Ange Bledsoe, program coordinator at Stonewall and an introductory speaker at the rally, added that the ruling was a “milestone.”

“I don’t know if it’s really hit me yet,” Bledsoe said. “I’m ecstatic and so thankful. … Now we feel a little more equal and not so discriminated against.”

And though several couples and individuals at the rally expressed personal satisfaction over being awarded the right to marry whom they choose—and for that marriage to be recognized, for legal purposes, by the federal government—they all emphasized the ruling’s importance as a civil-rights landmark.

feeling that you’re an actual citizen,” Havens said. “That you can’t have the same rights as everyone else makes you feel like a second-class citizen.”

Provencio took that sentiment a step further.

“We pay the same taxes as everyone else … and we may even be more active in the community than many people are,” she said.

Though the couple agreed there is much work to be done on the gay-rights front—pointing to the 37 states in which gay marriage is still illegal—both Havens and Provencio were clearly enthralled at the prospect of married life together, which they plan to begin next fall.

Not all Californians shared the

rally-goers’ enthusiasm for the Supreme Court ruling.

Proponents of Proposition 8 filed an emergency petition with the Supreme Court on June 29 in an effort to “stop the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal’s premature move requiring same-sex ‘marriage’ licenses in California, weeks before the Supreme Court’s decision goes into effect,” a press release read. The petition was rejected by Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy on June 30.

State Sen. Jim Nielsen (R-Gerber) called the Proposition 8 ruling “disappointing” in a press release.

“The political elite, who did not agree with the election results, refused to defend the people’s vote,” he said. “It calls into question the very nature of the people’s right to bypass the political system and directly assert their will using the democratic process.”

Myles Pustejovsky, manager at the Butte County Clerk-Recorder’s office, said the county began issuing same-sex marriage licenses following the ruling.

One man who intends to pursue such a license is Chicoan Kelly Houston, 65, who has been with his partner, Victor Robin, for 38 years. Though they had a four-month window in which to marry in 2008 prior to Proposition 8 being passed, a family illness demanded the couple’s full attention at the time. He said they intend to seize their opportunity this time around, having formalized their engagement the Saturday after the Supreme Court ruling. They plan on getting married either this October or the next, to mark their 39th or 40th anniversary together.

Houston, a gay Chicoan of AfricanAmerican descent who grew up in Washington, D.C., during the 1960s, said he believes the June 26 decision has similarities to decisive moments in the civilrights movement.

“Growing up in D.C., even though there were very many black people in the city, we didn’t have any voting rights until 1968,” he said during a recent phone interview, adding that the federal legalization of gay marriage is “very much the same thing and a giant step forward.

“I’ve lived this life without accepting any restrictions,” Houston continued. “It was very difficult for me growing up, because [being gay] wasn’t accepted. I knew it wasn’t accepted, and I knew that eventually it would change. But I never expected it to happen in my lifetime.” Ω

open to the public, July 1 could have marked the one-year anniversary of the state historic park’s closure. A year later, the group remains focused on the mansion’s future.

The BMCP held a public meeting June 26 to bring concerned citizens up to date on its ongoing efforts and the effects of some major events involving the California Department of Parks and Recreation that occurred in the past year, including last July’s discovery of $54 million in surplus funds, as well as recent legislation concerning state parks.

Prior to the meeting, the BMCP had already handed over $40,000 of communityraised funds (which totaled more than $140,000) to the Parks Department, and that night handed over another $10,000 check earmarked for developing new forms of revenue for the mansion. BMCP treasurer Debra Lucero said the organization still has about $96,000, which eventually will go to the group’s stated cause of keeping the mansion open. All of the $50,000 donated to date will be matched by the Parks Department because of legislation passed late last year.

The surplus scandal—the state agency was sitting on the $54 million while simultaneously pushing for community organizations’ raising of funds to halt the closure of 70 of California’s 279 state parks—led to Assembly Bill 1478. The bill, which Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law last September, allocated $20.5 million of the discovered funds back toward the Parks Department, with $10 million of that dedicated to matching money raised by community organizations. Spurred by the threatened closures, groups throughout the state have raised more than $7 million to date, Lucero reported.

AB 1478 also strengthened the budget-oversight abilities of the State Park and Recreation Commission—a group of nine governorappointed members that helps the director of Parks Department establish general policies—and funded internal and external investigations into the surplus situation. Additionally, it guarantees all of the parks will remain open until mid-2014.

Though it’s been granted a two-year reprieve from threatened closure, the mansion’s long-term future is still a concern.

“Sustainability is our code word,” said Lucy Sperling, a member of the BMCP’s board of directors, comparing the mansion to a non-renewable resource in need of ongoing protection.

BMCP board member Susan Hearne outlined some ways the latest $10,000 donation—which will equal $20,000 with matching state funds—can be used to generate revenue, including the construction and maintenance of a better website, and capital for fundraising projects. Hearne also suggested the mansion be more readily accessible for private functions, as well as special cultural and historical events.

Hearne recommended Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park use the funds to pay a liaison to actively seek support from other community organizations and to look at establishing an internship program with Chico State University.

a unique private-public partnership with the state of California for stewardship of the

mansion similar to that of the Jack London State Historic Park near Glen Ellen, Lucero said. Last summer it became the first state park to be completely run by a nonprofit organization, the Valley of the Moon Natural History Association. She said this move has had a number of positive effects on that park, including tripling the amount of volunteers signing on to work there.

“What Jack London [SHP] found is that, when the state stepped away, tree trimmers came and volunteered their services, roofers came and put on a roof, and people began to volunteer and take ownership,” Lucero said.

“We have the good fortune of State Parks taking care of everything, but that’s not sustainable.”

Lucero also mentioned the Old City Hall Arts Center in Redding, noting that, though not a state park, it has a unique relationship with that city. It is run by the Shasta County Arts Council, with the city committing to pay them $16,000 and provide services equaling another $40,000 annually.

Lucero said the partnership plan is still in its infancy, and that BMCP has no desire to see the mansion completely privatized, or to exclude other organizations like the Bidwell Mansion Association, which runs the gift shop and has helped steward the mansion for decades.

“Some people are afraid of privatization, but that’s not what this is about,” she said.

“It’s about keeping an asset that belongs to the state open to the public.”

Lucero noted the state would have to cover the cost of insuring the building and its collection of artifacts to make the plan feasible, but beyond that, the BMCP could cover the lion’s share of the estimated $200,000 a year it costs to keep the mansion open at its current level of service. She said the plan would require legislation, and the BMCP will be appealing to local representatives in the near future.

is on the list of government services that could be contracted back out to a private entity, such as the Butte Humane Society.

The city’s takeover called for seven full-time and four part-time city employees to join three people who already worked in Animal Control, which was already operated by the Police Department. The contracts for the new positions were limited to two years to allow the city to let people go if it turned out they weren’t needed.

The plan created a new service branch under the supervision of Capt. Lori McPhail, headed by Animal Services Manager Tracy Mohr, to oversee a registered veterinary technician, an Animal Control supervisor, two Animal Control officers, an animal-care technician and four animal-care attendants.

Savings would be realized through the use of volunteers, former Police Chief Mike Maloney told the Chico City Council at the time. The plan moved forward, with conservative Councilmembers Bob Evans and Mark Sorensen voting against it.

The takeover was designed to save the city money and improve conditions at the shelter. Improvements have been made, including a new 38-run kennel facility for dogs. The shelter no longer accepts surrendered or healthy stray cats, thus lowering the rate of euthanasia. The Butte Humane Society carries out animaladoption services.

The Police Department had estimated that through the first five months the city would save $127,490 by not funding BHS $102,490, combined with $25,000 projected revenue from impound fees and spay-andneuter fees minus the cost of food and care. As it turned out, initially running the shelter cost the city about $134,000 more than if the change in operations had not been made.

But the council was told it was a learning process and was asked for patience while adjustments were made.

“They’ve been asking us information about our budget,” she said. “So I imagine that is something they are looking into.”

Nakamura, she pointed out, was brought in to cut the budget.

“He was hired to come in and cut where he could, and I’m sure that’s probably something that he is looking at and saying, ‘Well, would it be cheaper?’ Obviously that shouldn’t be the only factor. But beyond that, I really don’t know what is happening.”

For his part, Nakamura said the shelter is one of a number of services that could be contracted out by the city.

“We are looking at all options right now based on our most recent budget workshop and the adoption of the budget,” he said. “We still have a significant ways to go, and so given the direction of the council, we are looking at all our opportunities, and one of those may be working with either Butte Humane Society or another entity to assist us with animalcontrol services.”

He said at this point it’s nothing more than a “preliminary exploration.”

“I know this is a politically sensitive issue and, trust me, our goal is not to create problems for animals, or for individuals who have animals or are looking to adopt animals or find a location to drop their animal off,” he said. “But given the fiscal situation, we have to look at partnerships.”

TOXIC TIME-BOMB?

It’s been nearly 30 years since the catastrophic nuclear accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, but—thanks to global warming and a lack of management—the region’s forests could be the source of future disaster.

Since 1986, the trees in a 660-square-mile area around the closed nuclear plant have been absorbing radioactive elements such as cesium137, plutonium-238 and strontium-90, which would be released into the atmosphere should there be a forest fire, according to The Daily Climate.

Given that the region is experiencing longer and drier summers, and that the mostly pine forests of Chernobyl have become severely overgrown due to virtual abandonment, experts believe the conditions are ripe for a huge fire that would spread contamination over a wide area.

“There’s really no question,” said Ukrainian forestry professor Sergiy Zibtsev. “If Chernobyl forests burn, contaminants would migrate outside the immediate area.”

WATER SELF-RELIANCE FOR SOCAL?

By the year 2022, Southern California is set to have the world’s biggest groundwater-treatment center—built over one of the United States’ largest Superfund pollution sites.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power plans to splash out $600 million to $800 million on two treatment plants in the San Fernando Basin that will “restore groundwater pumping of drinking water from scores of San Fernando Valley wells that the DWP began closing in the 1980s,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

DWP’s move is a significant departure from its habit of offsetting its diminishing reliance upon groundwater by importing water from Northern California and the eastern Sierra Nevadas.

“By 2035, we plan to reduce our purchases of imported water by half,” said James McDaniel, senior assistant general manager of DWP. Construction is set to begin in five years.

NOWHERE TO RUN

As if having a global population of more than 7 billion weren’t cause enough for concern, a new United Nations report indicates that the world’s population is likely to reach nearly 11 billion people by the end of this century—800 million more than previously forecast.

The revised prediction is largely due to birth rates in Africa, which are not falling as quickly as researchers had thought, according to the UK’s Daily Mail.

“The current African population is about 1.1 billion and it is now expected to reach 4.2 billion ... by 2100,” said the Mail.

“The fertility decline in Africa has slowed down or stalled to a larger extent than we previously predicted,” Adrian Raftery, a professor at the University of Washington, was quoted as saying.

Bamboo is a grass, not a tree. There are approximately 1,250 species of bamboo, and about 100 species are used commercially according to the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan. The fiber is among the fastest-growing in the world: While an oak tree takes 120 years to grow to maturity, bamboo can be harvested in three.

Even though bamboo has some obvious eco-benefits—it pulls carbon from the atmosphere through carbon sequestration and reproduces itself after harvest—not all bamboo is created equal.

“Bamboo was the darling of green

Bamboo flooring is often a composite “wood” product like particle board that’s made by gluing bamboo strips together.

Wilson is concerned with the toxic adhesives used in some bamboo flooring.

He says consumers can check the GreenGuard Environmental Institute for nontoxic options.

Some bamboo-flooring suppliers are paying attention. Take San Franciscobased Smith & Fong Company, makers of Plyboo bamboo flooring and plywood. The company is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council under its non-wood products category. “FSC-certified bamboo is the consumer’s assurance that the bamboo products they purchase are from a wellmanaged forest,” said Daniel Smith, founder and president of Smith & Fong.

The company uses a soy-based, formaldehyde-free adhesive on its bamboo flooring and lumber.

The FSC’s non-wood products category lists 51 U.S. companies, including Smith & Fong and Teragren (teragren.com). Bamboo flooring options at Teragren include wide-plank and solid-strip in a variety of styles.

Most bamboo comes from China and Vietnam. Wilson says he favors local products, but adds that ocean shipping is very efficient per ton mile. While he likes the performance qualities of bamboo, he stresses the importance of third-party certification.

This amount is expected to grow to nearly $17 billion per year by 2017, according to Susanne Lucas, executive director of the World Bamboo Organization, adding that the amount represents total trade of goods and services, from the raw materials to the finished goods.

The U.S. currently has no largescale bamboo farms. David Knight, the co-founder, president and CFO of Resource Fiber/Alabama—who co-founded Teragren with his wife, Ann—plans to change that by establishing a commercial-scale bamboo industry in Alabama. He is planting “acres and acres” (he declined to offer a specific number) in a farming operation in Alabama’s Black Belt region, and is planning manufac-

In the future, when green-minded builders and homeowners want truly sustainable grown-and-manufactured-in-the-U.S. bamboo, they’ll be able to find it.

UPPER PARK WATER ISSUES I went hiking on a recent hot Saturday afternoon in Upper Bidwell Park with my 12-year-old daughter, Lydia, and my friend Jo. Coming down the Monkey Face trail, I spotted two empty plastic water bottles, discarded in different places along the trail. There is more than one problem with that.

It’s bad enough, Mr. or Ms. Litterbug, that you purchased bottled water (in a plastic bottle, which requires oil, water and a lot of energy to produce) rather than investing in a reusable (BPA-free) metal drinking bottle. Chico-based Klean Kanteen, for one, makes great ones in a number of sizes, which can be purchased at several local stores.

But tossing your empty bottle alongside the trail—or wedging it between two rocks, as one of you did— Klean Kanteen! is ridiculous. Like we wanted to see (let alone clean up) your trash on our hike.

TAINTED BERRIES STILL SICKENING

The number of Hepatitis A cases associated with the Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend of frozen berries sold at Costco has risen to 127 people across eight states.

Though 54 people have been hospitalized due to the outbreak—which has been ongoing since May—there have been no deaths to date, and Costco has taken the berries off shelves and issued a recall, according to Food Poisoning Bulletin. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is inspecting Townsend’s processing facilities in Fairview, Ore. Customers of A Frame Espresso in Fort Bragg who bought smoothies between March 4 and June 8 are at risk of infection, as are customers of Evo’s Coffee Lounge in Ashland, Ore., who bought the shop’s smoothies between May 17 and June 12.

Hepatitis A causes liver inflammation; symptoms—which include fever, vomiting and stomach pain—can take up to seven weeks to develop after exposure.

MASS PRISON EXODUS?

Gov. Jerry Brown’s administration received a federal order to release 9,600 state prisoners by the end of the year to alleviate prison overcrowding.

The order, made by three federal judges on June 20, aims to reduce the state-prison population to from 149.8 percent to 137.5 percent of capacity, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In the ruling, the judges said no further delays to reduce the prison population would be granted, recommending the state expand the use of good-behavior credits to expedite prisoner release. In the event California does not comply with the order by the end of the year, prisoners will be released based on a list of “low-risk” offenders.

In 2006, a federal judge ruled federal oversight of California’s prison system was necessary after finding that an average of one inmate died weekly due to medical malpractice or neglect.

CHIMPS RETIRE FROM TESTING

A significant step toward eliminating the use of chimpanzees in invasive biomedical research was taken on June 26, as the National Institutes of Health announced it would retire all but about 50 chimps from testing.

More than 300 of the NIH-owned animals will move from research facilities across the country to sanctuaries, at which point Congressional law dictates they cannot be used for future research, according to The Washington Post. In 2014, NIH will seek about $3 million from Congress to house the animals.

Animal-rights advocates have long argued the practice of using chimps for medical research is unnecessary, a sentiment shared last January by an advisory panel that recommended NIH retire the majority of the animals.

T and the Bay Area may not seem like a commuter’s dream, but considering all the he roads between Butte County

miles Dr. Howard Hack has logged to teach at Stanford University over the course of two decades, his new route is a breeze.

Hack, the new gastroenterologist in Paradise, has been flying from Wisconsin to California off and on for 20 years. That’s a lot of frequent-flyer miles for a labor of love. So, when he got the chance to practice in the North State—in a community where the hospital is building an outpatient surgery center with rooms dedicated to GI—he jumped at the chance to shelve his jet-setting lifestyle.

In April, Hack joined the private practice of Dr. Donald Mansell and Dr. Damian Pestana, and he’s been performing GI procedures at Feather River Hospital. He, his wife and three children are already settling into their new surroundings.

“This is an excellent opportunity from just a variety of different standpoints: from a personal standpoint, from a practice standpoint, [and] working with the hospital here,” Hack said. “I’ve got two outstanding medical partners, and this is a close enough proximity to Stanford that it allows me to continue teaching, more easily.”

Education is important to Hack. He went to college in the Ivy League, graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, then got his medical degree from Washing-

ton University in St. Louis. He did his internship at the Cleveland Clinic and returned to Washington University for his internal-medicine residency before heading to Stanford for his GI training.

He considered a full-time career in academia before finding the perfect balance between caring for patients and training future physicians. He’s mostly taught at Stanford but also volunteered on the faculties of the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and the Indiana Medical School campus at Purdue while living in Lafayette, Ind. Now that he’s based in California, he plans to teach at Stanford once or twice a month.

Hack’s teaching is two-fold: He lec-

tures medical students on specific topics, and he also makes rounds in the hospital with postgraduate fellows to give handson, experiential training.

“You get a sense of accomplishment because you’re helping patients directly and you’re helping fix the world because you’re creating better doctors,” he said.

“And there’s the feedback you get from the fellows and your colleagues in learning different approaches. I always walk away with something new.

“Yes, you give something, but it’s definitely a two-way street working with such

His Stanford colleagues also help his private practice, since he can pick up the phone and reach one of a variety of world-class specialists if he has a concern about one of his patients.

“He’s brought a whole other dimension to what we can offer,” said Debby Adema, Feather River Hospital’s supervisor of same-day services and the GI lab.

Along with performing what he calls “the full gamut of work” at a general GI practice, Hack says he’s developed a niche: identifying and removing “flat polyps.” These growths, as their name suggests, can be hard to detect. He developed that expertise at Stanford.

Hack also has brought to Paradise a personal demeanor that’s made an impression on Adema and others.

“He’s such a pleasant person,” said Randy Cardwell, director of surgical services at Feather River.

“He frequently is one who compliments staff, saying it’s a privilege to work with such a great team, and he’s open to sharing that with them while he’s working with them, which is greatly appreciated.”

Hack appreciates being part of a team. In Milwaukee, he was part of a multi-specialty group where, for the most part, doctors worked independently. “Being in a smallerknit group like I am now is much better from a professional standpoint,” he said.

part” of Hack’s decision to come to Paradise was the construction of Feather River’s outpatient surgery center.

“You have to have the facilities to take care of patients, and outpatient facilities are more efficient,” Hack said. “From a cost standpoint and a time standpoint, you can take care of people effectively at an endoscopy center, so I thought that was great.”

Cardwell said the facility is on track for completion in midNovember. The GI doctors will be the first to practice there, and other physicians will phase in later.

The 13,000-square-foot complex is located on Peach Lane, adjacent to Feather River’s Sleep Medicine Center. When open, it will have four procedure rooms— two dedicated to GI—with 18 bed spaces and two physicians’ offices.

“It’s state of the art, and it’s going to be beautiful,” Adema said.

“It’s got nice patient flow from entry door to exit door, and we’re really proud of the decisions we’ve made for the equipment.”

The two GI suites feature especially flexible endoscopes, with most equipment mounted on ceiling booms to free up floor space.

Feather River expects the GI physicians will be able to perform 500 procedures per month, up from the 350 per month they’ve done since Hack’s arrival.

“Some procedure rooms aren’t configured the way you want them to be,” Hack said. “This way we’ll start fresh and have everything right from the start.” Ω

According to the Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District, a squirrel in Chico tested positive as the first case discovered in the county this year. Area residents are warned to stay indoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, and to wear long pants, long sleeves and insect repellent when outside. The virus was first detected in Butte County in 2004; since then, 104 residents have been infected, and seven have died.

The district asks that potential mosquito-breeding areas—standing water—be reported at 533-6038 or 3427350. There is no word on the squirrel’s current condition.

The street-food revolution is beginning to rise up in Chico

F

or locals who love food, there are few things in Chico as exciting as walking along Broadway between Third and Fourth streets during the Thursday Night Market.

Those two blocks (plus a couple of off-shoots along the way: Fourth Street and on the Main Street side of the City Plaza) offer dozens of choices for the same amount of money one might spend at the fast-food chains, and a variety of amazing flavors that far outshine those chains (and even many of the more-expensive brick-and-mortar restaurants): artisan tamales, smoking plates of fresh barbecue, Korean tacos, gourmet cupcakes, grilledcheese sandwiches, healthful plates of organic vegetables and grass-fed beef, homemade ice cream, and authentic Filipino cuisine, to name a few.

Now a full-fledged “movement,” street food has taken over in the United States, especially in big cities. In Portland, Ore., the food “pods”—permanent outdoor food-courts where trucks park together—are some of the most popular destinations for those seeking a wide variety of inexpensive dining options as well as a vibrant place to hang out with the community. The same goes for the rotating Off the Grid street-food markets in the Bay Area. The huge Friday night OTG gathering at Fort Mason in San Francisco hosts more than 30 food trucks and features four full outdoor bars serving cocktails, craft beers and wines.

While Chico, like a lot of cities out West, has for years been fortunate to have a variety of taco trucks feeding us some of the best food in town at some of the lowest prices, the greater street-food scene is just starting to come into its own locally. With new flavors and new trucks, trailers and carts—from the cheesy goodness melting forth from the windows of the big, black Mayhem Gourmet Grilled Cheese truck to the gourmet baked goods of the Cupcake Crusader—a quickly expanding menu of choices has joined our Mexican favorites at the market, at community events and in parking lots across Chico.

First family of street food Inday’s Filipino Food, Crazy Dog, Ethel’s Sweets When it comes to the family business, all members of the Geiger family take part. John Geiger is the face under the umbrella of the Crazy Dog cart parked throughout the school year on the sidewalk on the Warner Street side of the Chico State campus.

John’s Philippines-born wife, Ethel, is the brains behind the recipes of the Inday’s Filipino Food trailer that the couple operate during the Thursday Night Market. And even the Geiger kids, 10year-old Geo and 7-year-old Ally, are on the street, manning the little Ethel’s Sweets ice-cream-and-snacks cart alongside their parents at special events.

“If there’s an event, a music festival or something, I’ll say, ‘Hey, is it OK if we bring [the Ethel’s Sweets cart] along to keep our kids busy?,’” said John, during a recent conversation about his businesses and Chico’s rising street-food movement. “And then we can set it up right with Crazy PHOTO BY MELANIE MACTAVISH Dog or with Inday’s. … In fact, at Kite Day, we had all three, and they outsold both of ours!”

At a recent Thursday Night Market, the whole family was together around the cute tropical-themed Inday’s (pronounced “Ind-eyes”) trailer. John rotated skewers of chicken and little homemade pork sausages over flames on the grill set up next to the main trailer, while a smiling Ethel served various Filipino specialties—halang-halang (ground pork and vegetables), pancit bihon (noodles with shrimp, chicken and toasted almonds) and crispy little fried lumpia rolls—to a line of customers braving the summer heat for their fix. For their part, the kids were alternately chilling in little chairs behind their dad, and making friends with customers (with young Ally sharing her drawings of animals, including the magical Super Bunny).

It makes sense that the family of John Geiger would be such visible members of the Chico street-food scene. Not only is he one of Chico’s earliest outdoor food vendors, having operated the popular Crazy Dog cart

continually for 14 years since opening in 1999, but he’s also become the de facto leader of the current movement thanks to his “Street Food, Chico” Facebook page. Started three years ago—and operating under the slogan “Eat the street!”—the page features photos of local food trucks and carts and the food they serve, casual food reviews, plus links to the pages of Geiger’s street-food brethren.

But the most significant feature lately has been the page’s daily Street Food Report. Every morning, Monday through Saturday, Geiger posts the day’s location for each of the local vendors. There are currently roughly 30 participants, ranging from the many taco trucks that mostly stay put in one location, to the trucks that rotate among the best lunch-hour spots around town.

“The Cupcake Crusader really kind of started it [locally], I think,” Geiger said when talking about how the “mobile-cuisine vendors” utilize the power of social media and the Internet to keep customers up to date on their activities. “Tia Zimmerman, she was the first with a truck that moved from place to place, and [who] had a Facebook page, and she would post where she would be that day.

“I’m just borrowing from other people’s Facebook sites, really,” Geiger explained as he put the finishing touches on his Wednesday Facebook post. While he admits that he’s not really looking to be an official organizer, Geiger is excited about the growing local interest and the increasing number of street-food vendors in the area. And he’s been talking to the energetic owners of The Hunter & The Farmer truck—Jenna Hunter and Analise Farmer—about organizing a regular local gathering of vendors much like the one-stop-shop approach of the Off the Grid streetfood markets in the Bay Area.

“We’re planning to do a monthly or bi-monthly food-truck rally kind of thing where we set up in one spot. People love that idea.”

When asked where and when it might happen, Geiger said that they need something with plenty of parking—for trucks and patrons— and suggested that one of the CARD parks might be a possibility.

The first rally is planned for July 17, 5-9 p.m., and the site will be announced on the “Street Food, Chico” page that day.

“I don’t know, hopefully they’ll show up,” Geiger said with a measure of practical caution. “This isn’t San Francisco.” Maybe not, but if the mob scenes around trucks in local parking lots and at the markets are any indication, a regular street-food rally that brought all the food and the community into one place would seem to be a fairly safe bet.

Monster truck Chico Chuckwagon Half-brothers Mike Janosz and Benji Mallicoat have one of the biggest food trucks in town—the unmistakable Chico Chuckwagon. The 26-foot behemoth is an impressive sight, but it’s even more impressive considering its humble beginnings as a Frito-Lay step-up van.

“It was basically an aluminum box,” said Janosz, who noted that purchasing a ready-to-serve truck equivalent to what he was looking for would have cost around $120,000.

Janosz flew out to Ohio with a friend nearly two years ago to buy the van. That trip was an adventure of its own, but the real work started upon the return to Chico. That’s when Janosz and his father, Gary, a retired local schoolteacher, set to work on alterations that would transform the van, essentially a shell, into a viable food truck.

Their efforts took a year and a half to accomplish. But the result is one super-deluxe, professional set-up that includes, among other things, a large grill, deep fryer, freezer, refrigerator and—unusual for food trucks—its own restroom. Janosz and his dad equipped the truck so well, in fact, that the undercarriage required reinforcing.

“It’s pretty much an entire kitchen on wheels,” Janosz said of the massive truck he had wrapped with its distinctive logo of an oldtimey chuckwagon.

Mallicoat, 34, and

Janosz, 24, have both worked in restaurants, but neither had experience in the food-truck business. The brothers admit there has been a bit of a learning curve since Chico Chuckwagon hit the street-food scene back in March, but they’ve found a good rhythm. Currently, they set up outside of Build.com on Otterson Drive on Mondays, and in the parking lot of Home Depot Tuesday through Friday.

Weekends are devoted to working special events.

The brothers serve up a variety of traditional sandwiches—all made to order—such as BLT, hot pastrami, grilled cheese and a spicy, very flavorful Philly cheesesteak, among others. But they also make delicious perogies—dumplings made traditionally with a filling of cheesy mashed potatoes and onions or in variations with kielbasa sausage or jalapeños—inspired by Janosz’s Polish grandmother.

“We’re kind of like bar food, but without the bar,” Mallicoat said of the menu.

Janosz noted that the truck also features some healthful options, including its popular açaí bowl—a sorbet made from the juice of those berries and agave, topped with granola, fresh fruit and berries.

Mallicoat said the menu keeps expanding based on customer feedback.

Janosz echoed him, adding that the specials often become so popular that they end up as part of the menu. The brothers say they eventually would like to establish some sort of brick-and-mortar eatery, perhaps a sports bar and restaurant. But those aspirations are a ways off for now.

“We want to expand to something, but we’re not exactly sure what yet,” Mallicoat said.

Upon first meeting Analise Farmer, co-owner of The Hunter & The Farmer food truck, one thing was immediately apparent—she’s in awesome shape.

The Scottish-born Farmer, along with her partner, Jenna Hunter, have been dishing out food that adheres to the increasingly popular Paleo diet from their truck since January, but the two had been following the diet (a mix of what was available to our ancestors in the Paleolithic era—fish, grass-fed meats, eggs, vegetables, fungi, roots and nuts) well before launching their business.

“We were never overweight, we were always fit and active, and we always ate pretty healthy, or so we thought,” Farmer said during a lull in the lunch-hour rush outside of the Coffee Ranch on East First Avenue.

(heavy on bread and pasta, Farmer said) weren’t providing optimum fuel for their active lifestyles.

“We noticed it in our recovery,” Farmer said of the couple’s switch to Paleo. “The benefits of working out became much more noticeable on our bodies.”

Here Today Coffee Cart

The Hunter & The Farmer assistant soccer coaches at Humboldt State and moved together to coach soccer at Chico State, made frequent jokes about starting a Paleo food truck using their last names.

But last year, when the pair became “burnt out” from coaching, they decided to get serious about the idea.

“When we first started, we tried not to label ourselves as ‘the Paleo food truck,’” Farmer said. “It was just, ‘We’re The Hunter & The Farmer; this is what we serve.’ We didn’t want to scare people away by labeling ourselves the Paleo food truck, because you immediately limit yourself.”

But after opening, customer response—particularly from individuals with gluten intolerance, autoimmune deficiency or celiac disease—was such that Hunter and Farmer were initially overwhelmed.

“Right off the bat, we thought we could do it ourselves,” Farmer said.

“In our first week, Jenna quit her other job [at Leon Bistro] and now we have four [parttime] employees.”

Last week, their rotating menu included dishes like the Taco Smash, with ground beef served over smashed yams and topped with avocado and salsa, and the Summer Salad, which included organic mixed greens with red onions, blanched green and wax beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, Chandler walnuts and apricots.

Farmer added that providing a quick bite for customers with dietary restrictions, many of whom have difficulty finding places to eat out, has been tremendously rewarding.

“Some of them were like, ‘This is the first time I’ve eaten out in years,’” she said. “We thought it was so cool to provide that for those people.”

Now, Hunter and Farmer embrace the “Paleo food truck” label, and though they champion the Paleo lifestyle, they make a point not to push it on their customers.

“We’re not saying everyone should eat Paleo 100 percent of the time,” Farmer said. “We’re just trying to get people to eat a little bit cleaner and provide healthier options for them, especially for food that’s on-the-go.”

Bobbi Tryon’s Here Today Coffee Cart is for a number of Chicoans the first stop they make every Saturday morning before doing their weekly shopping at the downtown farmers’ market.

Open from 8 a.m. until 1:30 or 2 p.m., and located on the sidewalk just outside the western boundary of the market, Tryon’s cart offers what many swear is the best coffee in town—freshly drip-brewed by the cup at Tryon’s coffee bar and available in “strong” and “stronger” for $2.50 and $3, respectively. Couple that with her to-die-for homemade whole-wheat chocolate-chip cookies and the 15 or so chairs arranged around the cart in a sort of open-air café, and it’s easy to see why some folks don’t make it into the market for hours.

“That’s one of the things about the cart that’s so great—I am instantly loved because I have coffee,” Tryon said.

Tryon—a longtime nurse who retired in April—is also loved for her cheery manner and willingness to dispense good advice. “As I am making coffee, I’m a good enough multitasker now that a conversation is usually going on, a little counseling. And I’m a nurse, so I get a lot of medical questions,” she said.

Fire in the street Pop’s Pizza After sampling a slice from a trailer-mounted wood-burning pizza oven while vacationing in Oregon last year, Chico lawyer Michael Shepherd immediately called his son, Andy, and asked if he wanted to start a business. A few short months later, in late April, the younger Shepherd hitched his own custom-built mobile pizza machine to the back of his truck and hit the streets.

Tryon and her husband and “right-hand man,” Bob Speer (“the other Bob Speer,” she noted, referring to the fact that her husband has the same name as the recently retired editor of the CN&R), conceived of the idea after a vacation in Thailand in January 2000, when they were still a new couple.

“We saw a bunch of things [food items] sold in the street,” Tryon said of their trip. “And also, we were kind of sick of getting lousy coffee” in Chico.

Planning the coffee cart—which Speer built—was their “pillow talk.”

Besides, “I have always liked to have a little business going,” Tryon said. She used to make sandals, and she and Speer make the wood-and-canvas festival chairs that Here Today patrons relax in on Saturdays.

What’s the secret to Tryon’s delectable coffee?

“It’s freshly ground that morning, and it’s a finer grind than what people normally use,” she said of her special blend of dark and light Thanksgiving Coffee Co. beans. “And simply because it’s made individually by the cup, nothing sits around. …

“And I use a lot of coffee—that’s another reason probably.”

Tryon has recently begun selling a new variety of her fabulous cookies—laced with ground coffee, “and people are liking them,” she said with a smile.

And yes, it’s not all about the caffeine at the coffee cart: “I sell decaf, too,” Tryon said.

honor of the Shepherd patriarch. After a few months hopping from location to location, Andy found a good spot in the lot of Spike’s Bottle Shop on East First Avenue, where he can now be found most days, cooking and serving delectable artisan-style pizzas with his two-man crew.

In a town full of great pizza, Pop’s has carved a significant niche in just over a year, largely via word of mouth, a Facebook profile and catching the eye of curious passersby.

Though it lacks walls or any other perks of

permanence, the spot has its own charm, especially evident on a recent Friday when Andy invited fellow food-trucker Ike’s Smoke House to set up shop on the other side of a picnic table from the Pop’s oven and adjacent tent. Reggae music filled the air from a PA system in front of the liquor store, and a few dozen people came to eat at one—or both—of the trucks.

“We’ve got a great spot, which is important since we don’t have the luxury that some of the trucks have, where they can pull up on

the side of the road anywhere,” Andy said during a brief respite from his station in front of the oven, detailing the pizza truck’s symbiotic relationship with Spike’s.

“We pay rent—a very fair price—and I think we complement each other nicely. We don’t have to worry about selling drinks, so we can bring more pizza stuff.”

Pop’s Pizza trailer is a marvelously efficient creation. A sink is built-in near the hitch, and everything they need—the tent, various tools of the trade and a large refrigerated pizza table—can be stored beneath the large stone oven covered in glass tile. When loaded with burning wood, the oven maintains a tempera-

ture between 550 and 600 degrees, giving Pop’s pies a distinctive, wood-fired character.

Pop’s menu is always changing. It generally offers a few standbys, like pepperoni, and Hawaiian, and a weekly special with toppings largely dictated by what Andy picks up on his weekly trips to the farmers’ market. A recent example was the white-zucchini pizza, featuring feta cheese, roasted garlic, zucchini, olives and mozzarella over a lemon olive-oil base.

They also have vegan selections and secret specials advertised only through Facebook, such as the recent Fig and Pig, which featured figs and prosciutto with feta and garlic on a red-sauce base.

“Pop”—Michael—still plays an active role in the business, as does Andy’s mother, Tesa, who keeps the books. Andy said, other than family, his employees include close friends: “It couldn’t be any more fun. We’re a tight-knit group with a lot of trust and a lot of love.”

Michael also praised his extended-familyof-sorts, Chico’s growing food-truck community. “It’s a great group of people, and there’s a lot of great trucks out there right now,” he said. “But this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Other towns are filled with food trucks, and that’s going to happen here. Chico is perfect for it.”

his fascination with the human experience. The feel-good phrase “Follow your bliss”? That’s Campbell. Although Bellows has sort of redirected his purpose for creating art—as he puts it, to put a “positive frequency” out in the world—he insists he hasn’t altogether lost the more visceral pleasure of making music.

“I knew I liked playing music, but I wasn’t sure exactly why I did it,” Bellows explained. “I don’t think I’ve lost sight of that— I’m just using that passion for good.”

It actually took the nudging of some former members of Neva Dinova to get Bellows to record music again, going as far as booking his studio time in order to get his bits of songs to see the light of day. Recording New Ocean was pretty simple. Bellows returned to Omaha to finish writing and recording some 30 songs with his longtime friends (including The Faint’s Todd Fink).

“It was pretty organic how it came together,” Bellows said.

“There was no rehearsal. We did continuous takes where you either catch it or you don’t.”

New Ocean—which will be released in August on his friend Conor Oberst’s Saddle Creek label—is a varied album filled with 11 pop songs that veer from warm and fuzzy to delicate and dark.

The title track is the immediate stand-out, building and swelling like the body of water it depicts, while “Frequency,” a song that might best sum up the record, is more jaunty and sunny.

Sticking with Bellows’ philosophy, playing these songs in a room full of people might be more important than recording them. “I like both,” says Bellows. “It’s much better than my day job, which—I’m not complaining—puts food on the table, but it sure is good to be back on the road.” Ω

hen a guest comes for dinner, one of

Rosé wines have been a category overlooked in America for years. Though nearly always popular in Europe as a sumby Alastair mertime hot-day refreshment, wine Bland drinkers in the United States have kept a distance from this misunderstood style of wine, which is usually bone-dry (not sweet, as often expected by consumers familiar with syrupy white zinfandels) and can be just as intellectually stimulating as the most complex and well-made reds and whites.

At one time, even wine professionals barely thought twice about rosés. Fifteen years ago, local winemaker Phil LaRocca was making a sweet white zinfandel— pink, though technically not a classic rosé—but he had not made a dry rosé.

Then he went to Italy, to explore the land of his roots, and there—in the country of big reds like sangiovese, primitivo and barbera—the American made a surprising discovery.

“They drank rosé at lunch,” said LaRocca, who owns and operates LaRocca Vineyards in Forest Ranch.

LaRocca had always known Europeans were midday drinkers, but was intrigued that Italians liked pink wine.

Inspired, LaRocca began making a dry rosé of his own in the years after he returned, and he was none too early. The wine—dry, rosy-hued, and made with zinfandel grapes most years (the current release is a cabernet sauvignon)—has sold well, for pink wines have caught on among the American wine-drinking cognoscenti.

At Creekside Cellars (250 Vallombrosa Ave.), owner Brenda McLaughlin has seen the upward trend. She says customers at the shop and tasting bar now ask specifically for rosés. This almost never happened a decade and more ago, she says—“unless they had just returned from the South of France.” Each week, McLaughlin features a different rosé in the tasting room’s line-up, and at all times about a half-dozen can be found on the menu.

Berton Bertagna, who owns and operates Bertagna Son Kissed Vineyards just south of Chico, observed the rising interest in rosés and added one made with san-

giovese grapes to his repertoire two years ago. He says interest in the style appears to be up, but concedes that his pink sangiovese is a tough sell. Frequently, he must convince his customers that the wine is not sweet before they’ll even have a taste.

“A lot of people see a pink wine, and they think it’s going to be sweet,” Bertagna said. “Only when I say, ‘No, this is dry and crisp, a lot like a white wine’ will they try it.”

Perhaps it’s inevitable that the odds would be stacked against a wine colored like cotton candy.

Resembling white zinfandel hasn’t helped rosés, either.

While white zins are still the fourth most popular wine in America (after chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and merlot), they are also soda-sweet and reviled by most of the wine-drinking elite and not-quite-elite.

“Until the last few years, pretty much the only pink wines the public had access to were sweet,” Bertagna said.

“Now, you’ll see a handful [of rosés] where there used to be one, but a lot of people assume they’re all sweet.”

Thus, white zins have had a dampening effect on dry pink wines—in America, anyway. In Europe, though, this process never occurred, and rosés have been enjoyed there for at least 2,000 years, since the style first appeared in the scrubby oak-and-olive hills of southern France.

While Americans have been reluctant, they are finally drinking pink. In 2012, rosé exports to the United States from the French region of Provence jumped by 41 percent, while American consumption of imported rosé in general climbed by 28 percent.

The traditional French rosé is dry and crisp, with aromatic suggestions of strawberry, watermelon and cream. For those wanting to buy local, many California rosés capture this style, including Clos LaChance’s estate rosé, made mostly of grenache grapes, the dry rosé of Clarksburg Wine Company in the Sacramento Delta, and the rosés of LaRocca and Bertagna, both of which wineries have adhered to French styles using alternative choices of grapes.

For a slightly different take, Mumm Napa has infused Champagne-style bubbles into pink wine for their Brut rosé, while the newly launched Sequin Wines in Manteca has released a faintly effervescent rosé intended, in part, for use in cocktails. Ω

Whoops. It’s that kind of day and he’s that kind of character. But that kind of day goes even farther south when peckerwood terrorists blow up the Capitol as a diversion to storm the White House and grab the president. And Cale is suddenly given a second interview … this time with the president himself. Cue the explosions and gunfire. The countdown to apocalypse. And banter.

Emmerich isn’t exactly subtle, packing every stripe of right-wing extremist into his rogues’ lineup—even a few baby-boomer hawks who think blowing up the world will save it. All that’s missing is a mounted Klansman in bed sheets. The approach does set up some funny stuff, though, like one bit where an Aryan

that no matter how goofy it gets (and it gets pretty goofy), it’s still remarkably coherent.

It’s also remarkably entertaining. A throwback to 1980s and ’90s actioners like Die Hard, it swaps out John McClane for John Cale (Channing Tatum) a D.C. cop who shows up at the White House, daughter in tow, for an interview with the Secret Service. A job protecting the POTUS (Jamie Foxx) ostensibly will redeem him in his disappointed daughter’s eyes, and maybe score a few points with the ex who thinks he’s a total screw-up.

The interview doesn’t go all that well, because there’s some history with his interviewer (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

Brotherhood poster boy is fool enough to give our asskicking prez time to put on his Malcolm X specs.

Here’s where White House Down pays off: In a genre that generally rolls conservative, WHD is liberally amusing in a dark sort of way. The script is clever and the banter is witty, nailing the pre-Bourne Identity action-ethos perfectly, while still wrapping it up in contemporary spectacle. Sure, it’s big, dumb fun, but it’s clever big, dumb fun. It’s low-brow for intellectuals and other hipsters.

So yeah, it’s a noisy political cartoon goosed with Emmerich’s trademark destruction of historical landmarks, delivered with anarchistic relish and a flagwaving jingoism that almost tastes of sarcasm. Foxx’s President Sawyer is a pretty obvious ode to Obama, and yet a fantasy version that stands up to the militaryindustrial complex. A liberal’s wet dream of an action flick. Ω

Frances Ha

The new film by Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Greenberg) features co-writer Greta Gerwig in the title role.

Frances is 27, five or six years out of college, doggedly pursuing a not very promising career as a dancer, still very much at loose ends. The story takes her through a year’s worth of changing addresses, mostly in New York City, but also in Paris, upstate New York, and (briefly) Sacramento. Full of awkward charm and reckless energy, the ostensibly “undatable” Frances has hot-and-cold attachments to a revolving cast of roommates, including soon-to-be-married best friend Sophie (Mickey Sumner) and low-key male pals played by Adam Driver and Michael Zegen. Baumbach films it all in black and white, works in music from the films of François Truffaut, and creates a beguilingly contemplative context for this 86-minute celebration of quirky charms and offbeat energy. The Heat

An odd-couple buddy-cop comedy with Sandra Bullock as an uptight FBI agent forced to partner up with a rough-around-the-edges Boston detective (Melissa McCarthy) in order to bring down a Russian drug lord.

Henry Cavill is the latest in a long line of actors to don the famous blue-and-red costume in this reboot of the Superman movie franchise. The film focuses on the origin of the eponymous character, from a young Clark Kent’s discovery of his alien heritage and superhuman powers to donning the familiar “S” crest to save Earth from other, less friendly Kryptonian refugees. Monsters University

Mud

With river rats young and old haunted by misadventures and illusory romance on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi River, the latest film from Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) feels a little like a modern-day Huckleberry Finn. A kid named Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and his pal Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) go prowling for a boat wedged in the treetops of a wilderness island and cross paths there with a scraggly fugitive named Mud (Matthew McConaughey). Mud’s obsession with erratic dream-girl Juniper (Reese Witherspoon) brings tattered romance and other troubles into the action. Mud, a battle-scarred neighbor (Sam Shepard), and Ellis’ uncle (Michael Shannon) are all variously compromised alternatives to the kid’s parents who are in the process of breaking up. A vengeful patriarch (Joe Don Baker) from nearby eventually forces a climactic shoot-out, but the movie’s real interest resides in the oddly tender tragicomedy that emerges from the characters’ heedless low-rent dreaming. Now You See Me

The title is a tease, and a not very clever one at that. It seems apt enough at first, what with a story involving magicians, high-stakes sleight-of-hand, bank robbery as Vegas-style entertainment, and assorted now-you-see-it, now-you-don’t shenanigans. Publicity for Now You See Me makes much of the bank-robbing-magicians angle,

but that’s really only the most conspicuous hook in a gratuitously convoluted (and ultimately fatuous) plot. The story does have a quartet of mostly young magicians pulling off a series of spectacular escapades, and those tricks and capers provide the occasion for some big but not particularly impressive scenes. But much of the rest of the film is a rather whimsical war of attrition among increasingly absurd plot points involving a half-dozen other characters.

This is the End

A scruffy cast of Hollywood comedians—Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel—is holed up at James Franco’s house as the apocalypse devours the world outside. Everyone’s playing versions of their real-life selves, and while the sum of their parts doesn’t equal their best previous individual or collaborative efforts (Pineapple Express, Superbad, Knocked Up, The Office, Eastbound & Down), it’s fun just having all the likeable comedians in one place together. They are each naturally funny (especially McBride in full-on selfish-pig mode) and riff so well off one another that this twisted comedic version of bunker-horror provides plenty of ridiculousness to laugh at and plenty of gross-out shocks to keep things moving briskly all the way up to the heavenly climax. World War Z

World War Z is a barely capable thriller in zombie drag, with shaky-cam and muddy editing to keep you confused when the shit hits the fan. Brad Pitt plays a retired UN spook who reluctantly re-ups to do something about all the damned zombies. He does so in a handful of noisy set-pieces loosely linked together to serve as story, but those pieces are just variations of “Shit! Someone just made a noise and here come the zombies! Run!” And here the infected come arunnin’, as director Marc Forster emphasizes the swarming aspect of insects or even the disease itself. It’s a neat approach, one that aims for adrenaline over dread. There’s not much in the way of suspense, because that would slow down the action. Exit interview with recently laid-off Chico Art Projects Coordinator Mary Gardner

In short, Gardner says, the Chico Arts Commission likely will expand its reach. “I know the arts commission is really determined to take a more active role,” she said.

It’s hard to imagine anyone but Gardner guiding the city’s arts. She has been the arts-community’s person on the inside since 1996, and was also one of the founders of the Arts Commission—formed in 1989— and served as a commissioner for seven years (two as chairwoman) before being hired by the city.

“I really saw myself having this job till I retired, so it’s a little bit unsettling right now, but I’ll land on my feet, for sure,” she said.

Gardner no doubt will find another place to land.

Since moving to Chico in 1980 to attend Chico State—to study journalism initially, before moving over to arts—Gardner has invested her energies into Chico. She’s worked for the Chico Art Center and the now-defunct Wall Street Center for the Arts. She helped start Shakespeare in the Park in the early ’90s, and was the chief instigator of the Annies Arts Awards.

Mary and her sister, Liz, were also the founding owners of Café Flo, the cozy, and very arty, café next door to the Pageant Theatre (that has since changed hands more than once).

Of course, the biggest mark she’s made has been with the public-art projects she’s shepherded.

With the pieces spread around the city, it’s easy to take our public art for granted and not see the larger 30 CN&R July 3, 2013

picture made by the many works that have been installed over the last couple of decades, but even a quick look at the list is impressive, including: “The Silver Plow” on Park Avenue, the “Our Hands” sculpture in front of the municipal building, the gorgeous “Ancestor Gates” at 20th Street Park, the Lindo Channel Aerosol Art Gallery, 16 downtown art benches, the “Dancing Trout Fountain” in front of the City Council chambers, Gregg Payne’s giant xylophone in Wildwood Park, the “Dr. Martin Luther King Monument” sculpture at 20th Street Park, and the heritage-elms sculptures (aka “the horns”) at City Plaza.

Of course, some of those pieces are maybe more notorious than merely notable. Big, expensive sculptures such as “The Silver Plow” ($120,000) and “Our Hands” ($65,000) initially garnered as much criticism as they did praise for the art-projects coordinator. For her part, Gardner says that, in retrospect, she and the Arts Commission might have been able to create more public goodwill in the early days by spreading the arts money around on many smaller community projects (such as the more-recent art benches) rather than the big-ticket items they started with. But, she noted, they were all learning how to do the job as they went.

Learning curve aside, there has been some vindication. Despite its early detractors, the “Our Hands” sculpture has become an iconic image for Chico.

The public artworks “have become something that people want to go see, and take friends to, and meet up at,” Gardner said. “The hands just continue to amaze me at how many photographs every day get taken in front of those things. And that’s what good public art is supposed to do. It’s supposed to create a place for people to know: ‘I’m in Chico.’

“I really believe that one of the things that we’ve done in the last 23 years is create an expectation for Chico in terms of arts and culture,” she summed up.

“It’s ironic that we’ve lost the dedicated staff at the same time that the commission is, I think, in a really strong place right now in terms of who’s on it and [what] their vision is of what it’s going to take to take it to the next level and get some real funding in.

“Maybe this will galvanize people? This could be an opportunity for the community to clarify what it Ω wants, and really make their voices heard.”

The Sun Dogs Rose Windows Sub Pop Rose Windows’ (flower) power lies in their live sets, which by most accounts have the same effect as squeezing Woodstock into a small club. The Seattle sevenpiece’s (that’s right—seven-piece) debut The Sun Dogs is plenty hippiedippy, but it also reaches for serious cosmic propulsion. A lot of that power comes from vocalist Rabia Qazi, whose voice falls somewhere between those of Grace Slick and Shocking Blue’s Mariska Veres. Qazi eases into it with folky opener “The Sun Dogs I: Spirit Modules,” which floats along before giving way to the epic “Native Dreams.” It’s that song that sets the tone of The Sun Dogs, a record whose explosive peaks and dark valleys give the feeling of actually being on a long, strange trip. In fact, if these songs had remained in their earlier folk versions, Rose Windows would likely dissipate with the rest of the neo-psych smoke. But jolts from songs like “Walkin’ With a Woman” and “This Shroud” make the gentler moments just as intense.

The Sun Dogs is essentially a black-light poster come to life—which is to say there’s plenty here to feed your head.

The Newsroom: The Complete First Season HBO Home Video Just as high-school students have a required reading list, there are certain books, movies and television shows that all Americans should seek out. Aaron Sorkin’s comedic drama about a fictitious cablenews organization handling real-life headlines deserves a spot at the top based on the first five minutes of the series-opener alone. Fans of Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network) will recognize his use of quirky characters and rapid, witty dialogue, but the morals—both foolishly spotless and disgustingly questionable—and the human element amid overwhelming tragedy and triumph drive this series. Sorkin has assembled a stellar ensemble cast that brings nuance and subtleties to their roles, and each have a chance to shine. This is most evident in “Bullies,” which sees an amazing turn by Olivia Munn as the show’s economist, while guest-star Damon Gupton steals the series as a man who stands up to lead anchor Will McAvoy’s (Jeff Daniels) wellmeaning broadcast bullying. Watching The Newsroom, we’re forced to examine the 24/7 cable-news we choke down, but as Sorkin points out, the series has the gift of hindsight. In the end, it offers no solution to the problems it identifies, but it asks the questions. And sometimes questions are more important than the answers.

The Definitive Doc Watson Doc Watson Sugar Hill Records My best moments mostly come with a musical soundtrack. One such memory is an evening more than a decade ago: a treasured few hours spent with my younger daughter up in Jacksonville, Ore., at a Britt Festival concert. Gillian Welch opened for Doc Watson, who was accompanied by his son Merle. It was a balmy night, my own grown-up kid was at my side, and a truly legendary performer was singing and playing, doing tunes that tapped deep into the American past, linking us with times long gone, further bonding me with my child, hooking her up to a rich musical tradition she will revere after her old man has slipped this mortal coil.

Doc Watson has since left this earthly sphere, but he bequeathed to us a legacy of great music. A chunk of that legacy is gathered in this two-CD roundup of 34 of his best recordings, from “Willie Moore” to “Sitting on Top of the World” to “Whiskey Before Breakfast.” As I savored these songs, my memory redrew memories of Doc playing live: a blind man picking a guitar with utter assurance, and singing with authenticity—a warm and genuinely folksy master of his genre doing what he’d done his whole life. Damn, it was good. So’s this album.

THE NEW DAN Chico State just announced that Stephen Cummins will be

the new director of University Public Events (overseeing Chico Performances at Laxson Auditorium and Northstate Public Radio/KCHO), replacing longtime honcho Dan DeWayne, who stepped down late last year. Cummins comes to Chico from the Chicago suburb of Glen Ellyn, Ill., where he was in charge of the programming at the giant community college, College of DuPage. A quick perusal of his most recent calendar of events at the school’s McAninch Arts Center includes a lot of similarly flavored artists—from Canadian fiddle master Natalie MacMaster to jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis. The nonprofit Work Training Center operates more than a dozen local businesses. Some of them we instantly recognize, such as Fair Street Recycling and the Made in Paradise gift shop.

Others are less visible, such as its industrial woodshop, Feather River Industries in Oroville, and its industrial sewing shop, Deer Creek Sewing, in Chico. Like all of the WTC’s businesses, Feather River and Deer Creek have trained and hired adults with disabilities (aka its “clients”), as part of its mission to provide services to people with disabilities. Both businesses sell their wares through another WTC venture, Bear Mountain Production Services (at www.bmg wholesale.com), and their customers include everyone from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. to the Ritz Carlton Hotel in New York. Executive Director Don Krysakowski has been with WTC for nearly a year now, and he explained what the two shops are all about.

What products are you making?

On the sewing side, we make backpacks, totes, aprons. We can pretty much do anything. We do not make clothing yet. … If Chico goes to their no-plastic-bag policy, we’ve got all kinds of totes and shopping bags that people could buy.

Do you sell to individuals, or is it all wholesale?

Yes, we do some individual sales.

We have a staff right now of 10 actual people sewing. We have a client base of about 20 clients who work in the preproduction. Also, we have two clients who are working as sewers.

The market I heard the Silly Council discuss the Chico Certified Farmers’ Market on June 18, and I got there just in time to hear Mayor Mary Goloff get the lumpy, under-inflated ball rolling. In a column from October 2010, I implied that Scott Gruendl and Goloff were interchangeable. OMG. Scott, I apologize for even mentioning you two in the same sentence.

Brian Nakamura gave his reasons for wanting to change the Chico Certified Farmers’ Market—traffic, parking, and unspecified, perhaps imaginary, and definitely unknown loss of customers of downtown businesses caused by the CCFM. I stayed for only the first 30-odd public speakers—maybe things were different later on—and the only complaining business mentioned was Zucchini & Vine, alias Zucchini and Vine.

Nakamura seemed to favor moving the market to the city-hall lot mostly because of the nearby toilets, which would obviate the CCFM building its own.

The hardships the farmers’ market causes ordinary downtown businesses remind me of nothing so much as the weapons of mass destruction the government invented to justify invading Iraq. Nobody had any evidence that any business had ever lost a dime because of the CCFM, and I’ve never heard a good reason to move it. With all those extra people a couple of blocks away, a business that can’t figure out how to get

a few of them in the door isn’t offering what they want.

I don’t doubt that somewhere, sometime, someone may have been unable to park where she wanted when she wanted and was unwilling to park anywhere else and abandoned her plan to shower the brickand-mortar vendors downtown with riches, finding after much toil and woe an establishment with not so many other vehicles around, perhaps in Biggs. Maybe that happened, but nobody had any evidence. None.

And if it happened, so what?

There’s a lot involved in the issue, including Nakamura trying to force the council to cancel the existing agreement by inventing a deadline crisis. Yellowcake uranium. For the two hours or so that I sat there, Goloff and Nakamura were the leading advocates of canceling the arrangement and forcing the CCFM to renegotiate. I wonder about that.

When Goloff was running for the council the first time—while stumping for votes at the Saturday market, by the way—she told me that one reason she was running was ego. I appreciated her candor, and her concern now with what at the meeting she called her “legacy” comes as no surprise. She also thinks she governs Chico, rather than serves it, and plans to govern in the future. At one point she seemed to think that the CCFM’s municipal lot belonged to her, rather than us. A standing ovation by and for the governed set her straight, although she threatened to gavel us.
