We take pride in saying, “We’re from Chico, the town with Bidwell Park.” As the stewards of this place for a short while, it is our duty to do better.

How much is your park worth? When you spend a dollar at the coffee shop, is the park worth a penny? When you lounge in your back yard and know that you live in a town with a park like Bidwell (and your house is worth more because of it), is it worth a few dollars?

Let’s tell the leadership of our city that it is worth our pennies and dollars, and that we’ll do what we need to preserve it.

Because we’re willing to add a few dollars in taxes in order to pass along to our grandchildren that which makes us who we are.

If you’re new to Chico, Bidwell Park might seem like just another place behind a gate, and so, why not leave the gate closed?

But Bidwell Park is more than that. It’s who we are and we need to do the right things to keep that gate open. Ω

As the stewards of this place for a short while, it is our duty to do better.

curb dangerous binge drinking are honorable and important, but we’re urging some common sense in the matter.

A few weeks ago, at the request of Chico Police Chief Kirk Trostle, the City Council sacked a request of a local convenience-store owner seeking to sell beer and wine (not hard liquor) at his Mangrove Avenue business (see “No beer, no business,” Newslines, May 30, by Howard Hardee).

Charanjiv Singh has gone into debt to the tune of $400,000 to upgrade the store since purchasing it back in January 2012. He took that risk in good faith that he’d have no pushback on selling alcohol. After all, the previous owner had done so for decades prior in this residential neighborhood outside of the student-populated areas.

Of course, back when he purchased the store, there weren’t talks of seven binge-drinking deaths in the student community. There were no public forums scheduled to address Chico’s drinking culture. Back then, we’re certain his application for a beer and wine license would have been a non-issue.

Today, Singh is certain that he won’t be able to stay in business longterm. The council’s 6-1 vote pretty much seals that fate.

Councilman Sean Morgan, who cast the lone yes vote, was the only one who applied common sense to Singh’s request. He called the panel’s vote “hypocritical,” considering how it gave the OK to corporate big-box BevMo! a few months ago. The city’s Internal Affairs Committee is tasked with coming up with a policy for future alcohol licenses. That’s a good idea as it will save potential business owners from making an unwise investment in Chico.

But it doesn’t help Singh.

Speaking on the behalf of the police chief last week, a Chico police sergeant said Singh simply had bad timing. His license likely would have been approved only months earlier. “It was simply a matter of circumstance,” he said, since Chief Trostle had decided “to draw a line in the sand” on alcohol.

That’s a pretty flippant response to someone who’s invested that much time and money into making a successful business venture. Moreover, Trostle can only make a recommendation to the City Council. He’s doesn’t have the authority to draw that line.

Singh is considering appealing the decision, and if he does, the council should reconsider its position. Ω

Disaster in the foothills We’re getting pretty fed up with certain marijuana farmers. In

particular, the ones who are grading the foothills, eviscerating the landscape, excavating giant holes, and then bringing in semi-truck loads of soil in which to grow plants.

As reported in a recent story by News Editor Tom Gascoyne (see “Pot grades,” Newslines, May 30), what these growers are doing, without permits, is illegal and extremely environmentally unsound. It’s time for these “farmers” to be called out. They may want to portray themselves as nature-lovers and purport to be growing marijuana to help people suffering from medical ailments. But, come on, we know the real motivation here. It’s money.

If it wasn’t money, they’d be taking care to not harm the environment.

They wouldn’t destroy trees and other vegetation. They wouldn’t use chemical fertilizer and pesticides that run off from clay soil and pollute our creeks, rivers and other water sources, or their neighbors’ wells. How do these so-called compassionate growers reconcile the fact that they are harming the natural environment?

The truth is they don’t care. They just want the biggest plants they can get. To hell with their neighbors and the Earth.

To growers: If you want to be a real farmer, move to the valley. Or find a new method of growing.

To buyers and co-op members: Know where your marijuana comes from and the methods employed to grow it. Find a new supplier if you don’t see what you like. Ω

Step back in time to 1929

A good fit I’ve heard from many readers over the last week, congratulating me on my promotion to editor and wishing me success in the position. It’s been nice to hear from these community members, a majority of whom I’ve never even met.

Some folks remember me from my days as a reporter at the Chico Enterprise-Record, where I worked for four years. One of them asked me how I ended up going from such a conservative paper to a more liberal one. Good reporting and writing, I responded. Former CN&R Editor Evan Tuchinsky poached me from the E-R back in 2007, and I haven’t looked back.

Evan didn’t hold my workplace against me. He was rightly interested in whether I could report well and tell a story in the process.

No matter the public’s perception of a newspaper, there’s no substitution for those skills.

For me, the CN&R has been a good fit both professionally and personally. We have healthy debate in the office more than one might imagine, but it’s true I’m surrounded by people who in many cases share similar views on important issues. Plus, it’s an all-around good working environment, which is a rarity these days for those in the newspaper biz, especially at the daily papers, where I still have friends.

Morale is down because people are getting furloughed or laid off, and when somebody is dismissed or flees for a better-paying job, they’re not being replaced. Just last week, the Chicago Sun-Times laid off its full-time photography staff. That included a Pulitzer Prize winner. The paper’s reporters are now being trained to use iPhones, for photos as well as video to be uploaded to social-networking sites, according to a leaked memo.

As a journalist, I read and hear a lot about the changing state of my profession. More than ever, papers are trying, most unsuccessfully, to draw advertising to their websites. It’s all about Twitter feeds and Facebook posts.

Reporters are required to tweet and beg friends and family to “like” their company’s page. It reeks of desperation.

I understand the concept of change or die, but when that change comes at the expense of quality journalism, which it has, it’s pretty depressing. But it’s more than that. In reality, stories are going untold, and thus the community is less informed. Some might argue that getting info out quickly over the Web makes the community more informed. I doubt it. It’s hard to do that in 140 characters.

Sure, the CN&R has Facebook and Twitter accounts, but we don’t devote a ton of energy to them. We’re a small staff, so we concentrate on the important stuff: reporting and writing well. The printed paper remains our bread and butter, even in the digital age. The result is that we’re the only outlet in town writing 3,000-word indepth cover stories about local issues and people week in and week out.

Someday, when their readers finally flee or die off, daily newspapers are going regret this misplaced focus.

I’m confident the CN&R and other alternative newspapers will be here when that happens.

Market talk Re “Market instability” (Cover story, by Christine G.K. LaPado-Breglia, May 30): I found your latest issue on the farmers’ market to be one-sided. As a business owner who does enjoy the market, I wonder how I became the bad guy.

The market does bring people downtown, I will not dispute that fact. Even if they don’t shop that day, patrons of the market will see our stores and I am glad for that exposure.

Our business has been in our current location for 35 years. We have owned it for 25 years. Imagine my surprise to find the opinions of students and homeless people telling me, as a business owner, that I am not affected by the parking situation with the market.

I am surprised that you would devote an issue of your paper to this topic and not walk across the street and find out how the merchants feel. I would like to think that my advertising dollars counted for something.

Why do people think the merchants are against the market? Maybe because your paper, and other media, paint a picture that is not accurate and does not in any way include all the facts!

The farmers’ market was one of the reasons that we fell in love with Chico and moved here 18 years ago. We are not in favor of making any changes to the market that would cause it to lose any of its vibrancy.

Some downtown business owners feel that they suffer lower sales on Saturdays as a result of impacted parking or competition from vendors with similar products. However, Lyon Books is in a unique position to measure the impact of the market. We operated for nine years on Fifth Street, and then on March 1, we moved to 135 Main St., which is one block from the market. For the three months we’ve been in our new location, Saturday sales have been, on average, 33 percent higher than the weekdays. At our old location, Saturdays were 3 percent higher than weekdays. It looks like the market is helping us quite a bit.

There has been some discussion about having the market on Sundays instead of Saturdays. We’re afraid this will cause some of the vendors to have to choose between worship and their livelihoods, and the market LETTERS continued on page 6

I have only lived in the area for three years, but for me the Saturday farmers’ market represents much more than just a place to go hang out or do my groceries. Our farmers’ market is the heart of our local food movement, and our local economy.

Ask yourself, where do the goods that a lot of downtown stores are selling come from? To what level does imported merchandise support a local economy?

What about things that are made right here in Chico? And what if those things were made following sound principles of environmental and social consciousness, versus sweatshop labor in third-world countries?

I think as a consumer I ought to put my dollar where my conscience is, especially if the product in question will end up circulating through my whole system, as food happens to do. Putting the needs of hundreds of local farmers after the ones of a handful of retailers does not seem like the wisest decision to me.

Bob’s a big boy Re “Ode to Bob” (Second & Flume, by Melissa Daugherty, May 30): I don’t think that Bob Speer, the retired editor of the CN&R, needs any defending from the new editor. His years of working with the paper show that he is a big boy now. Between living here and spending much time in my San Francisco sculpture studio, I have great respect for Bob. Even when we have disagreed, I have found him to be a fair journalist. I look forward to some articles from his life in semi-retirement.

Two views on sit/lie law

The market is a draw

Re “City’s cash crunch” (Newslines, by Robert Speer, May 23): To the City Council: I must write to you about the sit/lie ordinance that has been suggested for the city of Chico. We desperately need this ordinance! Past councils have recklessly spent more than $4 million on the City Plaza, only to have it become the haven of the homeless and others.

I know we need services for homeless families with children, and the mentally ill, and we should provide them. However, that does not mean that any slacker who wants to take advantage of our town and these services should be allowed carte blanche. They should not be able to lay around the plaza with impunity, intimidating the average citizen with their attitude and presence. They should not be able to sleep, urinate and vomit in front of businesses that struggle to keep going in this economy.

I have voted for liberal City Council candidates for years, but my mind is being rapidly changed about this. It is one thing to act on your social conscience, it is another to just hand our town over to those who would take every advantage of our largesse that they can.

Re “Birds-eye view” (Letters, by Brenda Bergland, May 30): I find it ludicrous that we continue to have this discussion.

Every Saturday, I relax and reflect on what a blessing our farmers’ market is, and what a beautiful city we have. I see people leaving the farmers’ market and going into businesses. I do. I think, “Well, since I am downtown I will make a day of it and find a treasure or two.”

Certain businesses near the market haven’t done well in recent years, and they blame it on the market. I guess they all need a scapegoat. I am sad that there is this cloud hanging over the market, and I hope this can all be resolved in a functional manner.

There are those of us out there who are afraid of those less fortunate than others, who treat them like less of a person because they are sitting on a sidewalk. How would you react if you thought you had nothing to lose, only to realize that the city can take away your right to experience a public space?

Hassling the homeless is not the right direction to go if you want to improve the business economy of Chico. What about an economy of compassion? What about turning the other cheek? What about being nice to someone even though they aren’t as privileged?

Stop demonizing GMOs As a scientist, I have been disappointed by the bad press that genetically modified organisms (GMO) have recently received.

What bothers me is the constant labeling of GMO as dangerous to people, despite the absence of scientific evidence for this.

For example, the changes made to corn by ancient Native Americans have been called “catastrophic sexual transmutation.” The organisms that we use for food have always been the subject of drastic genetic experiments by mankind, whether through selective breeding or transgenics.

GMO are not dangerous. These organisms represent the best hope we have to adequately feed the human population. These organisms provide food security in the face of climate change, which threatens to cause the largest massmigration in the history of our species.

A Chico man was sentenced in a Sacramento federal court on May 29 to three years and 10 months in prison for tax fraud.

Randy Barker, 59, was convicted in February on three counts of filing false claims against the government. Barker and his wife, Tamara, were indicted last July for a 2008 income-tax return that claimed $1.4 million in interest income, which led to a refund of $987,900.

The Barkers spent most of the money within weeks, paying $495,000 for a house near Canyon Oaks Country Club and $81,000 for home furnishings. Tamara Barker died Aug. 21 of what the Butte County Coroner’s Office termed “undetermined reasons.”

Court documents connect Randy Barker with the Tax Challenger community which, according to a Department of Justice press release, is “a group of individuals who believe that the tax laws are unconstitutional or otherwise invalid.”

Walmart Stores, Inc. has agreed to pay more than $81 million after pleading guilty in federal courts in Los Angeles and San Francisco May 28 to violating federal and state environmental laws.

The mega-store franchise pleaded to six counts of violating the federal Clean Water Act by illegally handling and disposing of hazardous materials at stores across the country.

The case comes three years after the store agreed to pay $27 million in fines for similar environmental violations of state law. The Chico Walmart was part of that settlement; the store was charged with improper storage of chemicals and failure to train employees on how to respond to spills of hazardous materials.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey, who helped prosecute that case, said the new federal case was an “echo” of the state case, and that the local store appears to be better heeding environmental law.

A Rastafarian memorial was held in Chico on June 2 for a man who once served as Bob Marley’s personal chef.

Merritt said his father grew up with Marley in Jamaica’s Trench Town, the famed neighborhood in the parish of St. Andrew, and worked for the reggae legend, cooking his special vegetarian meals and fish. While insulin alone is relatively inexpensive, Potter said, the exorbitant cost of cancer drugs forced his patient to forego his diabetes treatment.

“That was a very pointed example of how you can go bankrupt paying for [drugs], or end up in a hospital because you couldn’t afford to take them,” he said. “Neither of those options makes much sense.”

to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s drug-testing methods, and drug companies that “create a pill for everything that happens in life,” Potter said.

As a renowned sociologist, and editor and co-author of the textbook The Risks of Prescription Drugs, Light will offer “a good view of how the pharmaceutical and health-care industries interact, with a view from 20,000 feet,” Potter said.

“Danny and I, we’re down on the ground, rolling around in the dirt with the patients, trying to get each patient taken care of. As a social scientist, [Light’s] perspective is more, ‘How does the whole system work? What are the consequences of this system?’”

According to The Risks of Prescription Drugs, the consequences are dire. It reads: “A review of studies in 1998 concluded that ‘overall, 2,216,000 hospital patients experienced a serious ADR (adverse drug reaction) in the United States in 1994.’An estimated 106,000 died.”

Applying the same rates to the most recent census data available, pharmaceutical drugs are responsible for 2.7 million hospitalizations and 128,000 hospitalbased deaths a year, making it the fourthleading cause of death in the nation.

In his extensive study of the health systems of European nations, he has concluded that “other affluent countries don’t allow people to become poor just because they’re sick.”

extract as much money from patients as possible while offering too few “breakthrough” medical advances. Rather, drug companies often produce medications that are “minor variations” of pre-existing products, Light said.

Potter’s experience with cancer-treatment medication reinforced Light’s view.

“In the last year, we’ve had 12 new cancer drugs,” Potter said. “Of those, only three showed benefits in terms of people living longer. … Eleven of those came in at a price greater than $100,000 a year. It’s ridiculous—even for people with insurance, [cancer drugs] become prohibitive.”

Light also finds error in the testing methods used in clinical trials conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“We can no longer trust the FDA,” Light said. “The rules by which they operate are heavily shaped by the [pharmaceutical] industry.” He said that current guidelines encourage drug companies to “make up new endpoints, to expand types of diseases within a category, or come up with new [diseases].

“If you [make up] a new disease, and then test a drug for it and it has some benefits, then you have a whole new market at monopoly prices.”

Light said he finds the FDA’s practice of testing new drugs against a placebo— rather than against established medication for which there is “more data in actual

use [as opposed to] an artificial trial”— particularly troublesome.

“When you do a placebo trial, it’s as if no other drugs exist, because you’re comparing it against nothing,” Light said. “If it’s the first drug ever discovered for a condition, then it makes sense to compare it to nothing. But when it’s the fourth or fifth diabetic or hypertension drug, then it doesn’t make any sense at all.”

Further, the FDA’s rules for what constitutes an acceptable trial allow companies to manipulate results by selecting young, healthy subjects and excluding individuals from certain demographics, Light said, producing test results that don’t accurately represent how the drugs will affect real patients.

“Many drugs get prescribed quite heavily to people who are older, people who have two or more health problems or are disabled” Light said, insisting tests omitting such groups serve only to prove “effectiveness in an ideal population.

“Then, the FDAapproves the drug without any real evidence that it’s effective.”

Potter agreed, adding that, due to the way FDA studies are conducted, “you certainly don’t know all the side effects before you start using something. We have a new drug for breast cancer—which is actually very effective—but you really couldn’t tell from the studies what the side effects would be.”

Anyone who tunes into a major

TV network’s nightly news program will be met with a barrage of advertisements for drugs claiming to cure “things that are a normal part of life,” Potter said with a laugh, noting that the side effects associated with the drugs are often considerably worse than the conditions they’re designed to treat.

“Which pill are you going to take for your overactive bladder?” Potter asked rhetorically. “Maybe, don’t take any— then you won’t get any of the side effects the voice-over guy is listing.”

So, with seemingly endless medication options for every illness imaginable, what would Light recommend consumers do to minimize their risk of taking a medication that has not been properly researched?

“I would ask them to consult their doctor, encourage them to consider the alternatives and, if possible, take an older, established drug, because we have much better evidence for how safe it is,” Light said. “Newer drugs are riskier.”

Light also pointed to the Consumer Union’s website, Best Buy Drugs, as a resource for “readable head-to-head comparisons of drugs within different classes” (go to www.tinyurl.com/bestdrugs to learn more). The site also provides clear descriptions of how the drugs work, likely side effects and prices, so you can find which drugs “have the most benefits, the least harm and lowest prices,” he said.

About 10 percent of the market value of CalPERS’ stock portfolio is fossilfuel investments.

The pension’s largest fossil-fuel stock picks are U.S. corporations ExxonMobil Corp., Chevron Corp., and Schlumberger.

CalPERS also owns about $1.4 billion in oil, gas and coal company bonds. Through the bond market, CalPERS has financed the activities of companies like Nexen Inc., one of the largest exploiters of Canada’s massive oil sands.

CalPERS also owns tens of millions in company bonds financing TransCanada, which has battled environmentalists, landowners and scientists for a decade over its proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport oil-sands extracts to Texas for global export.

The oil sands—thick deposits of bitumen and dirt from which oil can be extracted— can be refined into 168 billion barrels of oil.

By comparison, Saudi Arabia has 264 billion barrels of reserves buried beneath it.

The scientific consensus is that, if such vast reservoirs of oil are tapped and burned, climate change very likely will destroy the conditions for life on Earth, causing spikes in temperatures, massive droughts, wildfires, rising sea levels and other catastrophic transformations of the biosphere.

Organizers of the campaign, including students and climate-change activists, hope to tarnish the brands of oil, gas and coal companies. Ultimately, their goal is to move hundreds of billions of dollars from economic activities that cause climate change toward renewable, low-carbon investments.

Divestment activists are targeting California’s state pension systems, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, or CalPERS, and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System, CalSTRS. Both have enormous holdings of fossil-fuel company stocks and bonds.

The University of California, which administers its own giant endowment and multiple pension funds, is also being pressed to ditch oil, gas and coal securities.

Last month, students converged on the UC regents governing-board meeting at the Sacramento Convention Center.

“We’re hoping to convince the regents to divest the UC system from the 200 largest publicly traded fossil-fuel companies,” said Ophir Bruck, a junior at UC Berkeley who helped organize the action. “We’re not going to bankrupt these companies. It’s largely about hitting their reputation.”

CalPERS manages the retirement

investments for most of the Golden State’s city, county and state employees, and has approximately $265 billion in assets under management. CalSTRS has $164 billion invested.

the American Petroleum Institute, said divestment by university endowments is misguided.

“The development of oil and natural gas in America has done more to create jobs and generate revenue than any other industry,” she said.

She called the current oil and gas boom in the United States an “unstoppable revolution … helping economic recovery.”

Climate activists have countered with their own research. A recent report by the Aperio Group, an investment-management company, urges endowments and pensions to “do the investment math” when it comes to the question of whether dumping fossil-fuel stocks negatively impacts earnings.

Aperio’s analysts conclude that “the impact may be far less significant than presumed,” and that exclusion of oil, gas and coal stocks is likely to change overall investment returns by only half-of-one-hundredth of a percent.

California’s massive pools of pension and university endowment wealth also have global reach. CalPERS money is invested in Russian energy giants like Gazprom and Lukoil and Brazil’s state oil company, Petrobras. UC pension funds are tied up with European and Chinese oil and gas companies.

The survey put the nation’s net hiring index at -12, up from the low of -27 recorded in January 2010, but still well below the net hiring increase of 13 percentage points recorded in late 2004. taken up the issue of a possible move to divest from carbon-intensive-energy holdings. Bruck said he’s hoping his coalition can press the UC regents to take up the issue in the fall and perhaps vote sometime next year.

Already, seven UC-campus student governments and the faculty Senate of UC Santa Barbara have voted in favor of divesting UC’s $71 billion in pension and endowment investments from fossil-fuel companies.

The total endowment holdings for the nation’s 831 largest colleges and universities is estimated to be $406 billion as of last year.

ExxonMobil alone has a market capitalization of $401 billion.

Nakamura toward the end of the City Council’s regular meeting on Tuesday (June 4) as he led into an announcement that the city would be revealing a draft budget the following day, in advance of a budget-info forum this Friday (June 7) and the annual all-day budget session that’s scheduled for June 18.

And based on Nakamura’s comments at this week’s meeting, the session a few weeks out is going to be painful for everyone involved, including the council, which has the final say on approving a draft budget that includes dozens of employee layoffs.

“The task for the council is not going to be easy,” he said.

Released mid-morning Wednesday, the 333-page document contains a long introduction attempting to put the far-reaching cuts into context. It notes, for example, how the city has done its best to provide

services during “one of the most difficult financial times ever experienced.”

As proposed by Nakamura, the draft budget reduces city operational spending by about $1 million, from $83.8 million to $82.6 million. By far, the deepest cuts are in capital spending, from $48 million in fiscal year 2012-13 to a proposed $22.8 million in 2013-14. The total proposed budget is set at $105 million, a $29.5 million reduction from last year’s $134 million total budget.

Nakamura’s plan seeks to eliminate the city’s annual $4.8 million budget deficit as well as pay back certain depleted funds that have been used in recent years to balance the books.

To do so, he is recommending numerous layoffs of city personnel. As of deadline, the total number of layoffs was unclear (Nakamura was not available for clar-

ification as of deadline). However, it appears at least 28 positions are in jeopardy. This includes reductions in public-safety staffing levels—19 altogether (one lieutenant, three sergeants, 10 police officers, three community-service officers, an admin assistant and an animal-control supervisor). Five vacant positions in the Fire Department will be eliminated under the plan.

Elsewhere, reductions include four positions in the Administrative Services Department, which includes one vacant position; leaving one vacancy in the City Attorney’s Office unfilled; the elimination of three positions in the City Manager’s Office; and eliminating one post and leaving 2.5 vacancies in the Community Development Department.

The cuts in the Police Department will be felt around the city in a variety of ways, including delayed or canceled responses to property crime, public nuisance and civil matters, and potentially to critical incidents, the report notes.

Nakamura said as much during the meeting.

“There are going to be service reductions—that’s unavoidable,” he said.

The city manager wasn’t the only one to

speak about the city’s budget during Tuesday’s council meeting.

Rumors of sweeping layoffs had been circulating for days and, just before Nakamura spoke to the budget, a few employees had their say during the business-from-the-floor portion of the meeting, the time during which anyone is able to speak about any matter.

James Erven, a maintenance worker in the General Services Department, said eight employees in his department, which houses the Park and Operations and Maintenance divisions, were getting pink-slipped.

He said the consequences will be dramatic because, without these workers, the city will not be able to respond adequately to infrastructure and other emergencies, such as fallen trees or large limbs.

“I can’t imagine this is something the public would be content with,” he said of the potential layoffs.

Erven was echoed by Chris Bolshazy, a representative of the Trades and Crafts Unit of the Service Employees International Union, which represents 46 city workers.

“These are the folks who provide the infrastructure to the city,” he said.

In moving forward, Bolshazy urged the council to “lead by example.” He tried to subtly suggest that those in management reduce their own compensation packages, but then very bluntly got to his point.

“It’s a bitter pill to swallow when we look at the top three managers getting between 20 to 30 percent increases over former managers,” said Bolshazy, pointing to the fact that Nakamura, Assistant City Manager Mark Orme, and Administrative Services Director Chris Constantin make significantly more than their predecessors.

Nakamura later indicated there were some positive signs in the local economy. He was referring to rebounding housing, stabilizing property tax and sales tax revenues, as well as a rise in construction permits.

He made it clear, however, that the city, even in more fiscally solvent times, needs to be cautious with its spending.

“The key is to be able to do the right thing, even when nobody’s looking,” he said.

panhandling, camping in storefront doorways, and a perception of an increase in crime are among the major grievances. A panel of seven community leaders gave updates on their respective group’s efforts in solving these problems at the Clean and Safe Chico gathering at the El Rey Theatre last Wednesday, May 29.

“We don’t want to talk more—we need to implement solutions,” said Chico Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Katie Simmons, who facilitated the gathering. “If you want to help, join me.”

Clean and Safe Chico is composed of a collection of groups whose stated mission is to keep Chico secure, friendly and attractive.

Programs touted include the Downtown Ambassadors, the Street Pastors, and one called Redirect Generosity, which discourages giving handouts to the homeless and instead promotes donating to services like rehab centers, homeless shelters and food banks.

Jovanni Tricerri, executive director at Chico Stewardship Network, said the Chico Ambassadors program trains volunteers to become goodwill envoys who interact with businesses, visitors and the homeless to encourage affability, information and cooperation. They work Thursdays through Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tricerri said there are currently about 25 ambassadors, but the network would like 30 to 40 more (go to www.ChicoAmbas sadors.com to apply to be a volunteer).

Bill Such, executive director of the Jesus Center, said the Street Pastors program consists of local pastors and church members who roam downtown at night to engage the homeless, offering encouragement and assistance.

“You may have given your kids action figures. Well, you’re looking at an action figure right now,” he said of himself.

The Street Pastors will coordinate with the police, the sheriff’s office, and drugawareness programs.

Such told the gathering at the El Rey that there is a lack of help available to the mentally ill. That was later echoed on a downtown sidewalk by Richard Place, a homeless man who said he is plagued by drug addiction and depression, and that the rigors of long-term homelessness are a recipe for mental-health problems.

Place, 46, said he’s a strong supporter of Redirect Generosity because he believes that giving directly to the homeless facilitates homelessness.

But elsewhere on the streets, the reaction to Clean and Safe Chico was mixed.

Steve Miller, another transient, said it is wrong to discourage giving to the homeless, but admitted that if he were not homeless, he

might feel differently.

Michael Lowe, 61 years old and homeless, said he agrees with the campaign.

“The funding for all those services needs to come from somewhere, and the city of Chico can’t pay for it all,” said Lowe, outside of City Council chambers last Thursday.

Lowe said he had not yet seen the Street Pastors in his time on the streets, but welcomed the idea.

Another vehemently denounced a sit/lie law in Chico that would make sitting or lying on public sidewalks illegal. He said the rule, if passed, would allow police to decide who is acceptable based on appearance, and he promised to use groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union to stop it.

Brad Montgomery, executive director of the Torres Community Shelter, said one issue that keeps the homeless away from that facility is its refusal to accept dogs because of noise and safety concerns. He said he would eventually like to see an off-site dog shelter built.

The evening ended on a positive note from the optimistic Simmons.

“The sky’s the limit,” she said. “We want to inspire hope with a sense of possibility to make Chico the best it can be.”

BAG BAN SACKED

California’s proposed ban of plastic shopping bags failed to pass the state Senate on May 27, falling three votes short of approval.

Senate Bill 405, by Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Los Angeles), would have prohibited Golden State retailers from providing customers with plastic shopping bags, and would have allowed retailers to charge for paper bags, according to The Sacramento Bee. Padilla said the bill was an opportunity to “be aggressive about how we transition to a cleaner economy,” and that the ban would reduce litter, help wildlife and assist local governments tasked with cleaning up.

The measure was opposed by the plasticbag industry, which has spent nearly $300,000 lobbying against the bill. The American Progressive Bag Alliance issued a statement saying the bill was based on “unfounded stats, junk science and myths,” and that the ban would have cost 2,000 plastic-factory workers their jobs.

Apple CEO Tim Cook made the announcement at the Wall Street Journal’s D: All Things Digital D11 conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, on May 28, according to The Washington Post. In the past, Apple had been criticized by environmental groups for powering its data centers with fossil-fuel energy. The company announced in March that all of its data centers now run on solar, wind or geothermal energy.

Jackson, who resigned from her position with the EPA in December of last year, wrote in an email, “Apple has shown how innovation can drive real progress by removing toxics from its products, incorporating renewable energy in its data-center plans, and continually raising the bar for energy efficiency in the electronics industry.”

FRACKING UP GERMAN BEER

German beer makers are voicing concern that groundwater contamination from hydraulic fracturing could prevent them from upholding Germany’s beer-purity law.

In a letter to six German ministers, the German Brewers Federation asserted that Chancellor Angela Merkel’s draft of fracking regulations does not go far enough, arguing that the brewing industry depends on high-quality drinking water, according to Spiegel Online. The current beer-purity law, fomerly known as Reinheitsgebot, and originating in 1516, requires beer be made only from malt, hops, yeast and water.

In the letter, the brewers said: “The legal changes planned by the federal government to date are not sufficient to guarantee the security of drinking-water supplies and to take into account the requirements of the Reinheitsgebot.”

Most farmers tending to a multi-acre farm would balk at giving up their only tractor. But the Heartseed farmers—Kee, Ron Toppi and Elliott Proffitt—have dedicated themselves to a no-till, compostheavy method that would make a front loader pretty handy for moving around their biggest input: compost.

The farmers do not use a tractor to build new rows after every season; they simply reuse their raised beds, adding more compost on top, and plant again. (While they do weed between the beds with a wheelhoe, they never use the wheelhoe on the raised beds.)

Kee said that Heartseed’s farming technique is “based [on] compost. For every crop, [we] add one to three inches of compost to the top of the soil. So far this year, in four months, we’ve bought 120 yards of compost—that’s three double-semi truckloads.”

“We’re building more permanent beds by mounding up the existing soil and then adding compost, so every planting will add another fresh layer of compost. What we’re already experiencing … is that the soil beneath the compost is becoming more loamy,” said Toppi.

Soil inputs beyond compost have been minimal: so far, just oyster-shell and chick-

en-manure amendments. But high withinrow diversity, as well as mixes of perennials and annuals, are also key elements to their style of farming. “I think the longterm validity of this style of farming comes from supporting the diversity of life in the soil and trusting its ability to support an abundant ecosystem,” Kee said.

Heartseed is the newest incarnation

of the farmland adjacent to the GRUB Cooperative on Dayton Road, which was formerly the home of GRUB CSA Farm until it moved to West Sacramento Avenue at the end of last year. One of the primary reasons for the move was the unclear status of the lease for the cooperative and the surrounding farmland, which will be up for renewal again in October 2014.

Despite the insecurity, the three Heartseed farmers are planting new trees, investing their own money, and talking of expanding, including creating a rotational grazing system with sheep and chickens, and a pond fed by graywater from a new vegetable-washing station.

“I think the mindset [for us] has been, ‘Live as though we’re going to be here forever,’” said Toppi on a recent warm day in the field.

farming is inspired by Paul Kaiser at Singing Frogs Farm, a family farm in Kee’s hometown of Sebastopol. Kaiser’s no-till methods, influenced in part by the permaculture movement, have increased his soil’s organic matter and prevented emissions of potentially harmful nitrogen compounds released into the atmosphere by tilling.

“The U.S. agriculture system … could combat global warming if, on average, farms across the United States could increase their soil[’s] organic matter by 1 percent,” said Kee. “That would pretty much mitigate the global-warming effects,” but many scientists and farmers find the percentage increase to be unattainable. And yet, Singing Frogs has increased its organic matter by 4.2 percent largely by adding compost and not tilling, Kee noted.

The mission of the Heartseed farm is more than just soil fertility, though.

“There’s a global food-fight going on, and I want to be a part of it,” declared Toppi, as he planted butternut and kabocha squash seeds underneath a young apricot tree.

Toppi connects the farm’s diverse fields and low-impact no-till methods with the healthful-food movement’s fight against such things as monoculture farming and GMOs, and is keen to provide alternative food choices for local consumers.

Biodynamics, created in 1924, was the brainchild of Rudolf Steiner, perhaps best known as the inventor of the Waldorf teaching method. Biodynamic farming takes a holistic approach to agriculture, focusing on the relationships between the animals, plants and soil in a given area.

Proffitt is growing herbs for biodynamic “preparations”—special mixes often made from herbs like stinging nettle and yarrow, and manure, bones or other parts of domesticated farm animals, which are purported to increase soil fertility.

$25, featured “carrots, beets, potatoes, onions, eggs, grapefruit, arugula, lettuce, fava beans, chard, cilantro and kohlrabi,” said Kee. He explains the breakdown goal for each box: “Thirteen dollars worth of vegetables, four dollars worth of eggs, four dollars worth of herbs, four dollars worth of fruit.”

At this point, Heartseed has just one CSA member, but the farmers hope to eventually cover the costs of the lease for the cooperative and farmland with profits from the farm.

“The common vision that Ron, Elliott and I share is that we would [have] a 40- or 50-member CSA, and with that, be able to pay the lease of the property,” Kee said.

“Then, anyone who is living here, rather than having a job somewhere else and making money to pay rent, can just put time in toward the CSA to cover their

“I think that the name Heartseed is really indicative of what this project is all about,” she said.

“It’s a farm, and there are the annual row crops, but there’s so much more happening here. … It’s really a project of the heart.” Ω

Glazing options to consider: • The current window-glass standard is dual pane, low-e[missivity]. This option performs well and protects your interior finishes from sun damage. Higher performing triple pane, low-e windows are available but are more commonly used in colder climates.

• If you have a passive solar home, uncoated or ‘hard-coat’ low-e glass should be used in south-facing windows to heat the home in cooler months. Uncoated glass will provide the most solar gain; however, keep in mind it will not protect interior finishes from UV damage.

“Orientation and treatment considerations: • It is critical to properly size your windows based on solar orientation.

BIRD FLU COSTS BILLIONS

China’s outbreak of bird flu, or the H7N9 virus, appears to be controlled, but at enormous cost to the country’s economy.

The new virus, which has infected 130 people and caused 36 deaths in mainland China since March, was contained primarily by shutting down live-poultry markets and standardizing methods of transporting poultry to reduce infection among birds, according to Fox News.

While it is highly pathogenic in humans, H7N9— which causes severe respiratory disease—is not virulent in birds, making it almost impossible for farmers to detect.

The economic impacts of H7N9 have been “astounding,” said Juan Lubroth, chief veterinary officer at the U.N.’s Food and Agricultural Organization.

“Over $6.5 billion has been lost in the agricultural sector because of prices, consumer confidence and trade,” he said.

CUTS TO MEDI-CAL PROVIDERS APPROVED

A federal court upheld California’s right to impose a 10 percent rate reduction on the state’s providers of Medi-Cal services.

The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals lifted injunctions on implementing the controversial cut to hospitals, physicians, dentists and emergency transport, according to California Healthline. The state legislature passed the 10 percent reduction in 2011 in reaction to a huge budget shortfall, but the cut was put on hold while the court case was resolved. While the cut will save California about $600 million a year, many have raised fears that if provider rates dip too low, providers will stop accepting Medi-Cal patients.

“The state’s efforts to cut reimbursement rates will harm patients’ oral health and their ability to access care at a time when California is trying to recruit more providers into the system,” said Lindsey Robinson, president of the California Dental Association.

ROACHES LINKED TO ASTHMA

A link between asthma and living in a home with cockroaches could partially explain why children in low-income housing are disproportionately affected by the respiratory disease.

Though researchers can’t say roaches and asthma are directly related, evidence suggests the more people are exposed to the feces and shredded skins of cockroaches, the greater the chance they will develop asthma, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

A recent study found more than 26 percent of Philadelphia’s children suffered from asthma, nearly three times the national average.

Researchers said the biggest contributing factor to children’s asthma in the urban Northeast is exposure to roaches. Further, the chemicals used to kill roaches only compound asthmatic symptoms.

Nationally, 13 percent of black children and 20 percent of Puerto Rican children have asthma, compared to 8 percent of white and Latino children.

titioner she respects, and whenever an issue arises, she doesn’t hesitate to visit Candace Kremer.

Kremer is not a pediatrician, though— she’s a chiropractor. Scherquist, her husband, Mishu Cioban, and their daughters, Livia and Adina Cioban, are among a growing number of families who see chiropractic doctors as their main source of primary care.

Locally, the trend is partially due to Scherquist’s evangelism. She has encouraged many mothers in her circle of friends to see Kremer at Preference Chiropractic in Chico, where Kremer practices with her mother, Christina McDonald, and brother, Martin McDonald.

Scherquist knows medical doctors have their place in her daughters’ care—after all, Mishu works as an emergency-room nurse at Enloe Medical Center. Yet, barring a broken bone or major ailment, she’ll continue to rely on Kremer when it comes to falls and fevers.

“Usually, the first thing I do is take them to the chiropractor,” Scherquist said in a recent phone interview as Livia, who is almost 4, and 2-year-old Adina played in the background. “Even if it [a chiropractic adjustment] doesn’t solve the problem, it gets their body in the strongest position to be able to fight whatever it is their body is trying to fight. … I have never taken them

to our regular doctor for anything other than regular checkups.”

Along with adjustments, Kremer offers nutritional guidance. She’ll recommend supplements to boost immune responses to infections and to fortify the body. She also doesn’t hesitate to refer young patients to another practitioner if she diagnoses an illness or injury that’s beyond her scope of practice.

“We definitely recommend co-management,” Kremer said by phone, “because everybody in this day and age works better with a health team. There’s no way one doctor has all the answers, so we recommend that parents definitely take their kids to a pediatrician. Maybe six times out of 10, we say, ‘Yes, go to a pediatrician right after this,’ and four times out of 10 we say, ‘Go home, let the kid rest, give it one more day, and if the symptoms don’t change, call your pediatrician in the morning.’”

Scherquist, for one, hasn’t needed to pay such visits to the pediatrician. Sure,

her daughters have come down with childhood illnesses, but on the whole they’re what Kremer would call “well-adjusted” in all senses of the term.

That’s partly due to the fact that Kremer sees them often. Scherquist comes to the office weekly for her own adjustment, and the girls often want in on the action.

“If they need an adjustment, she’ll give it to them, but if they don’t, she won’t,” Scherquist said. “But they love it. They jump up on the table and they relax immediately. They both relax so much that you can’t have a conversation with them when they’re on the table.”

chiropractors within the first days of life, for adjustments to counteract the stresses of birth. Kremer, the daughter of a longtime chiropractor, received adjustments at an early age herself.

“My brother and I have both been getting adjusted since we were born, and grew up living the chiropractic lifestyle,” Kremer said, “which means you get adjusted so that you stay healthy, as opposed to people who start under chiropractic care in their 30s or 40s or 50s because they’re having headaches or back pain. Still, Kremer recognizes that her treatments may not fit everyone. She just hopes parents will come into her office with an open mind and open eyes.

“There’s not ever just one answer,” Kremer said. “People come in and ask, ‘What do you do for a kid when they have a fever?’

Of course I’m going to adjust her, but chiropractic isn’t the fountain of youth; it’s not the magic pill.

Health experts have raised concerns about marijuana contaminated by pesticides, including products sold through medicalmarijuana dispensaries, according to The Huffington Post. Jeff Raber of The Werc Shop, a Pasadenabased lab testing marijuana from California dispensaries, conducted a study that found samples from Los Angeles contained pesticide levels at 1,600 times the legal digestible amount.

Pesticides detected include bifenthrin, diazinon and permethrin, as well as plant-growth regulator paclobutrazol.

The amount of pesticide a smoker absorbed depended on the method of smoking: A hand-held glass pipe caused 60.3 percent to 69.5 percent of chemical residues to be inhaled, while 0.08 to 10.9 percent got through a filtered water pipe.

I

once managed to pay rent for three months by selling vintage Star Wars and G.I. Joe toys—which I’d saved from a Dumpster—on Craigslist. In other lean times, I’ve used the site to find employment, from short-term writing gigs to a two-year stint at an after-school program. And once, after missing the last bus 40 miles from home, I was saved from a night on the streets by catching a rideshare through the website, squeezing into the back seat of a Volvo crammed full of dirty clothes. The driver was a UC Irvine student heading home for winter break who’d apparently saved a semester’s worth of laundry for his lucky mother.

I’ve also used the site in more prosperous times, to beef up an ever-growing collection of obscura others might call junk, including manual typewriters, an assortment of strange musical instruments, and the occasional vintage cigar box or ukulele.

When buying things on Craigslist, they often come with a story. Had I bought my autoharp on eBay instead, I wouldn’t have met the delightful retired schoolteacher who played it to a classroom full of children every morning for 30 years. Even if I’d been lucky enough to find my dream guitar—a vintage Harmony tenor archtop—in a store, I’d never have met the Paradise man who demanded I sit and listen to some stories before any money changed hands, and eventually knocked $50 off the price because he knew I genuinely appreciated doing so.

Craigslist—like the newspaper classified ads it has largely supplanted—isn’t solely a place where things are bought and sold, or just a site to look for jobs or apartments.

If you read between the lines, it offers much more: It’s a reflection of the people who make up any given community, and a portal to adventure and learning opportunities. It’s where people, with the benefit of some anonymity and safety in selecting who they respond to and interact with, can indulge and share their passions, losses, experiences, beliefs, expertise and lifestyles.

In the last month, I responded to several of the more interesting ads I came across on Chico’s Craigslist in search of the humanity lurking beyond the technological portal. I deliberately avoided some of the site’s racier regions in the interest of pursuing a PG-13-rated article, instead focusing on the Community section.

Friggin’ in the riggin’ “My personality is pretty bizarre and ‘out there’,” said Aurora Tehan in a recent phone interview from her Cohasset home, “but I conduct myself very professionally at work, so a lot of people might not realize there’s this wild side to me.”

While Tehan, a business owner, maintains this professional facade most of the time, she reserves at least one midsummer day a year to let her freak flag—which in her

case bears a skull and crossbones— fly. For the last seven years, she has organized an annual pirate-themed canoe-and-kayak trip down the Sacramento River that, as she repeated several times, is not for the overly sensitive.

“Pirates can be crude,” she said.

“There’re a lot of crude pirate jokes and crude pirate songs, so if you’re easily offended, it’s not the trip for you.”

The trek starts at Woodson Bridge near Corning and ends locally at Scotty’s Landing, a distance of roughly 25 miles, lasting seven or eight hours. It sometimes includes treasure hunts with maps Tehan draws to caches she hides on islands the day before.

This year’s trip is scheduled for July 27. In the past, Tehan’s motley crew has numbered from 12 to 35.

recruit more members last year and netted five newbies, three of whom have already committed to returning. She has gotten about 10 emails for the 2013 trip from an ad she posted in early May, and also expects non-Craigslist pirates from as far away as Washington, D.C., and Texas.

While there are some younger revelers, she said most range from 30 to 50 (the oldest was 72).

“The college kids love it when we get to Irvine Finch [River Access], where they all put-in on tubes,” she said. “They get a big kick out of what they think is a bunch of crazy old people cruising down the river dressed like pirates, and we have great interactions.

They scream, ‘Show us your booty!’ and all kinds of stuff, and really get into it.”

Tehan said the trip is exclusively

for canoes and kayaks, as they don’t want to “babysit” tubers or deal with engine noise. The trip is for “big pirates and wenches only, no little scallywags,” as the ad states, and it’s BYOGG (“Bring your own gobbles and grog”).

Other than that, most everyone is welcome, the only rules being you must dress and talk like a pirate during the trip (Tehan suggests costumes can be found cheaply at yard sales and thrift stores).

“We want everyone to act like pirates and have all the fun they want, but we don’t want any jackholes out there,” she said. “We don’t want dangerous people trying to tip over canoes or anything like that. We want it to be safe, obviously.

“But the main thing is, if you’re easily offended, don’t come.”

Old French legends tell of a valley on the moon where all things lost on Earth go, where you can find a lake of spilled milk and mountains of small change. Reading the “lost & found” listings on Craigslist, one would assume Chico’s section of this moon valley to be populated by packs of wild dogs (and other beasts, including an African Gray parrot and a guinea pig) roaming forests of stolen houseplants. There’d also be lots of bikes, keys, cell phones, tablets, the occasional wedding ring and Grandpa Ernie’s old Buck knife.

ty pair of jeans,” explained 20-yearold Nick Hankins, who placed an ad offering a $150 reward for the knife on April 18. “I was just mobbing on my longboard like I usually do, making my way across town, and I felt my pocket and it was gone.”

Hankins thinks he lost the knife on a bike path while heading from the Fair View High School area to Anthony’s Liquor on The Esplanade, and said the reward is due to the blade’s sentimental value.

“It was just a plain old 112 Buck knife, but like from the first series ever, like real old,” he said, explaining that Grandpa Ernie, a carpenter who “did all kinds of mechanical stuff in his hobby times,” passed away a year ago at age 93 after carrying the knife around for at least 70 years. Hankins has fond memories of fishing and camping with the man as a child, though Hankins said his grandfather developed dementia in his old age.

“He was kind of rich and kind of like a collector,” Hankins said. “I don’t think you’d call him a hoarder, because he bought really expensive, nice things. He didn’t just buy junk, you know?”

Hankins is from Chico but now lives in Santa Cruz. He said he’ll be here a short time longer while he helps his sister sell some of Grandpa Ernie’s belongings on Craigslist, and hopes to find the knife before he leaves.

“I’m obviously too young to have, like, kids and stuff right now, but they’d be a cool thing to have someday, and I thought it’d be sick to pass it along, because it’s a cool old knife and he was a cool old dude.”

The secret life of backyard bees The buzzing in Tamar Thomson’s back yard grows louder with each step toward her lovely garden, which could be described as inviting, save the two large and very active bee hives located next to several neatly planted rows of vegetables and flowers.

“Normally, you don’t want to wear black with the bees,” she warned, just as I got close enough to the source of the drone for the occasional wayward bee to bounce off my head. “They’re naturally inclined to protect their colonies from bears and things like that.”

Tamar Thomson started keeping bees in her back yard last summer, and wants to encourage other people to do the same.

shorts and somewhat bear-like frame.

Thomson offered CN&R photographer Melanie MacTavish and I thick, long-sleeved white shirts and netted veils—gear she said she doesn’t generally wear herself, opting for only a pair of thin gardening gloves while working her hives. Indeed, Thomson’s confidence with the creatures is so profound it’s infectious, and within minutes I stood comfortably near the hives, awestruck as she shared the particulars of her peculiar hobby.

In mid-April, she placed an ad on Craigslist, inviting interested parties to help her open up the hives, hoping to inspire more people to keep back-yard bees. She said three others have visited her hives.

Thomson was well-prepared for our visit, and shared a wealth of knowledge about basic beekeeping.

After calming the bees with the aromatic smoke of burning pine needles (“It makes them go and eat honey,” she explained), she opened the few top layers, cutting through the propolis (a thick sappy mixture the bees use to seal their hives) along the way, and eventually pulled out a frame dripping with bees and honey.

Her hives are traditional models, though many beekeepers now prefer newer “top-bar hives,” which

she explained are lighter, easier to work with, relatively cheap, and easy to build. She said most backyard beekeepers start their colonies with a queen and three pounds of bees, and recommended Olivarez Honey Bees Inc. in Orland as a good starting point.

She received her first hive as a birthday gift from her daughter, Chelsie Romulo, last July. Romulo began keeping bees herself in Virginia, where she is pursuing a Ph.D. in sustainability at George Mason University. Thomson explained how her daughter had found the hive on the Sacramento Craigslist, applied a barrier to close it up, and transported it—bees and all—in the back seat of her car. Thomson’s father also started keeping bees, so the new hobby is now shared by three generations.

Thomson said she doesn’t keep bees to harvest honey: “I just wanted to give them a sort of safe haven

here, to provide them some space where they can live and produce and we can co-exist happily together,” she said, noting that colony collapse, varroa mites and other threats have led to a worldwide decline in bee populations.

And does she ever get stung?

“I only ever get what we call ‘clumsy stings,’” she said, explaining how they resulted from her own mistakes. “I’m not afraid of the bees or of getting stung, but I am afraid of jostling the hive or upsetting them somehow.

“I knocked the hive askew once and they stung me seven times,” she said with a giggle, proving she has no hard feelings toward the insects. “They chased me in the house and let me know that they didn’t appreciate that. I had a lesson to learn and they taught me.

“I learn a lot from the bees.”

Running of the bull(dogs) French bulldogs, like many other specially bred pedigrees, have notorious health issues. This became apparent immediately upon arriving at a French-bulldog meet-up in DeGarmo park, when one of the attendees—a pleasantly plump, 8-year-old, white-and-butterscotch-colored Frenchie named Paris—keeled over on her side and began convulsing.

Paris’ human companion, Terry Hell, comforted the dog until she

stopped seizing and immediately called the vet. In the meantime, I asked the other Frenchie-phile in attendance, Chris Teschan, if this was a common occurrence.

“It’s uncommon but almost expected,” he explained while keeping one eye on his own 3year-old French bulldog, the svelter Yvette, who was rassling nearby with a much larger pit-bull pup. “Most of the breed’s problems are with breathing. They’re a brachycephalic breed, so their airways are really shortened up.

Most of them snore.”

As the conversation continued, Teschan occasionally interjected other common health problems—they easily develop skin problems, do not tolerate hot or cold temperatures well, are often born with soft palates that later require surgery, and require special diets.

Both Yvette and Paris were adopted through bulldog rescues, and both have had health conditions. Yvette was meant to be a breeding dog, but a prolapsed anus eliminated her ability to birth. Teschan and his wife, Lori, adopted the dog at the beginning of 2012 for $300, the cost of her corrective surgery.

Paris once had a ruptured disk that paralyzed her hind legs. As she panicked, her body overheated, and Hell drove Paris all the way to UC Davis on a special icepack bed provided by a local vet.

While there, the doctors also decided to do reconstructive surgery to her palate and take other measures to prevent respiratory problems.

Hell has no regrets, saying

The high art of chess she’d fallen in love with Paris the second she saw her picture on the Internet, and flew all the way to Oklahoma City to pick her up.

Hell started the local Frenchbulldog group, which meets twice monthly at Bidwell and DeGarmo parks, after breaking off from an event called Pug Sunday. Though Yvette and Paris were the only Frenchies present that day, the organizers said they sometimes get up to a half-dozen of the dogs playing together.

Both owners said French bulldogs make the best companion dogs. Teschan originally acquired Yvette to help his wife endure the pain and recovery of multiple back surgeries, and said the dog faithfully sat at her side throughout. He is fascinated by Frenchie folklore and our conversation was peppered with facts about the breed. For example, the folds on their faces were bred into them to help blood run away from their eyes during darker days when they were meant to fight bulls

and bears, and in the 1800s everyone from Parisian prostitutes to aristocrats considered the dogs to be status symbols.

“They’re the most awesome dogs ever,” Teschan declared, and Hell wholeheartedly agreed, patting Paris as she recovered by her side. The vet had advised she make an appointment to determine the cause of the seizure, and—for this Sunday—to refrain from playing too much.

“I’ve had lots of different breeds growing up and I have never felt about dogs the way I do about these Frenchies,” Teschan continued.

“If I had my way I’d have a giant French-bulldog foundation, with acres of feral Frenchies running all over the place like herds of buffalo.”

Derek Longoria couch-surfed his way from Portland, Ore., to Chico, settling here when he met his girlfriend and to start a business, Apex Climbing, which guides rock climbers into the Feather River Canyon. After relocating, he missed playing chess with friends and with a Craigslistbased chess club from his former home, and decided to start a similar club here three months ago.

Longoria explained he and a group of close friends discovered chess about seven years ago when they were given a nudge by Mother Nature and … something else.

“We got snowed-in in Portland for two weeks, and all we had was a half-ounce of pot and a chessboard,” he said. “So we played constantly, for two weeks straight, and got really addicted [to the game].”

“My old friends and I get a little obsessed. We’re all super into rockclimbing and just becoming the best we can at whatever we’re focused on,” he explained. “We found chess and have been hooked ever since.”

Longoria’s Craigslist ad has attracted several players, and he said respondents usually bring a handful of other friends. Back in Portland, club meetings were attended by about 10 people on a regular basis. In Chico, the biggest number his fledgling group has attracted—usually to meetings at the Naked Lounge—is five.

Longoria said he uses Craigslist for other reasons, noting Chico is a good place to buy “whatchamacallits,” or assorted odds and ends like electronics sold cheaply by college students. He also uses the classifieds to give away free personal-training sessions to practice for an upcoming test to attain his certification as a personal trainer.

Though unable to make one of the meetings, I met Longoria downtown for a quick game. The sound thrashing he gave me on the chessboard was softened by some scintillating conversation, partly about some of the more colorful characters each of us has met through Craigslist. This, he emphasized, is what his chess group is really all about.

“Anyone who’s interested should come out and play, whether you’re good or bad. It’s really all about just meeting and connecting with people.” Ω

Hearing Valentine belt out her soul-tinged, someone-done-me-wrong songs in her big, bluesy voice today, it’s hard to imagine she was ever a woman flagged with the self-doubt that she said continued to persist until the last few years.

Valentine started hitting full stride last summer, when a last-minute submission of her song “Mrs. Parker”—an ode to the 1920s firebrand, Dorothy Parker—led to her winning top honors at community radio station KZFR’s Celebration of the Song contest. She also recently received a CAMMIE for Best Female Singer and successfully crowd-funded $3,000 via Indiegogo.com to record her debut EP, Secret Lover.

Valentine sometimes performs alone with her guitar or backed by keys, a bass player or, as she said, “whoever she’s able to get together at the 24 CN&R June 6, 2013

time.” She also plays at the semi-regular Duffy’s Sirens showcases with fellow musical drink-slingers Aubrey Debauchery and Katrina Rodriguez.

Valentine’s love of soul is apparent in her songs and live performances, a passion she said was ingrained into her while growing up with her grandma’s record collection.

“I grew up with a lot of Patsy Cline and Willie Nelson, which you can’t really avoid growing up in Corning,” she said. But she also played “a lot of old Motown, blues and soul, which I’ve always been really drawn to.”

Otis Redding, Roberta Flack and Ray Charles make the short list of her favorites, as does Gladys Knight. “She was one of my first idols,” she said of Knight. “I really want to see her someday, which I should do sooner than later. I still cover ‘Midnight Train to Georgia.’”

To best indulge this influence, Valentine spent the Indiegogo money wisely, recruiting horns, keys and a full band to record the album at Origami Lounge.

Studio owner Scott Barwick engineered, while local jazz-guitarist/engineer Dave Elke helped oversee and organize the project, doing additional tracking at his home studio. It was then mastered at Sage Audio in Nashville, Tenn.

“It’s definitely the most professional, legit recording I’ve ever done.” Valentine said of the final product. “It’s pretty polished, and I’m proud of what we accomplished and grateful to everyone involved.”

Valentine said nothing is set in stone yet, but she hopes to take her songs on a two-week tour this July: “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and with the album I feel like I finally have something substantial to take with me.” Ω

Day at the ranch The big-ticket item at the annual Country Faire & Threshing Bee at Patrick Ranch is, understandably, the threshing-bee side of the event, where the old-time tractors are shown off and threshing demos are given. But the country-faire side is just as impressive, packed as it is with live music, vendors, kids activities and tons of local EDITOR’S PICK food, art. In Orland, farmer Bob White grows a handful of cherry varieties on six acres and has been selling his fruit for weeks at Chico’s farmers’ markets. However, White grows mostly early ripening varieties and his harvest is all but finished. White says cherries are especially profitable early in the season—April and May—when many people come clamoring to his market stall with wads of cash to taste the year’s first cherries.

That’s why White doesn’t bother growing later-ripening varieties, such as the ubiquitous Bing. In fact, White is pulling out several dozen BlackPearl and Skeena cherry trees, varieties which bear fruit through June.

“By that time, I’m tired of cherries and so are a lot of people,” he said.

Yet, cherries—arguably among the world’s most flawless fruits—will always be popular, and will still appear at local farmers’ markets for at least a few more weeks. Even now, after six weeks of California cherries, prices are as high as ever in retail outlets.

Nick Matteis, associate director of the California Cherry Board in Sacramento, says he recently saw cherries selling for $6.99 a pound at a major Sacramento retailer. “That’s just unreal,” said Matteis, who nonetheless bought a sack. “That’s an amazing return for any fruit.” At S&S Produce in Chico, cherries were selling for $4.99 a pound last week. The Chico Natural Foods Cooperative, meanwhile, had cherries tagged at $5.99 per pound.

Cherries can pull big money, but White notes that the fruit is a particularly high-risk crop and not always profitable. Though he produces nothing else on his land and is a committed cherry farmer, White jokes that he’s not sure why anyone would choose to invest new roots in the cherry industry—which many farmers are doing in the San Joaquin Valley, where acreage is expanding. A splattering of spring rainfall can cause cherries to swell and split, ruining the crop, he says. And a hailstorm can bruise and destroy every cherry in an orchard. Pests can be a huge problem, too.

“Everything that likes to eat anything likes to eat cherries,” White said. That means birds, squirrels, insects, and mold-making fungi.

Though the California crop is still coming in, estimates have already been made on the total 2013 harvest. Matteis said it’s been a “decently good” year, with official forecasts predicting 8.1 million 18-pound boxes.

That’s down from 2010’s harvest of 9 million boxes, but way up from 2008’s meager 3-million-box return.

“We had good weather on our side [this year], but we did have a lighter crop than we might have had,” Matteis said.

Nine cherry trees out of every 10 in America’s

commercial orchards, which lie mostly in Washington, Oregon and California, are of the large Bing variety, a heavy-bearing type that originated in Oregon’s Willamette Valley in the 1850s. In lesser quantities, dozens of varieties grow. Some to watch for include Brooks, Lapin, Merton Heart, Merton Premiere, Mona, Burbank and Coral Champagne. A cornucopia of flavors? Possibly.

But Matteis says a person would need to be a “cherry connoisseur” to distinguish one cherry from the next in a blind tasting. Nearly all are red, shiny, sweet and crisp.

The Rainier—a yellowish-pink cherry with translucent flesh when it ripens in June—is an exception.

Cherries may be almost universally loved, and they surely qualify as a healthful food—yet Matteis says the industry has nonetheless been hunting for a solid health claim to claim as its own, but there isn’t one yet. While walnuts are selling at record rates thanks to hype about heart-healthy oils, blueberries due to being praised as a super-source of antioxidants, and olive oil because of publicity about its polyphenol content and supposed life-lengthening properties, cherries have no such health claims backed by science.

“We’re looking for a specific attribute that would lead to better health in people who eat them,” Matteis said.

Thing is, it doesn’t take fancy marketing to sell cherries—just a table at the market and a heap of the shiniest, reddest fruit that grows, from Chile to Chico. Ω

conspicuous hook in a gratuitously convoluted (and ultimately fatuous) plot.

The story does have a quartet of mostly young magicians pulling off a series of spectacular escapades, and those tricks and capers provide the occasion for some big but not particularly impressive scenes. But much of the rest of the film is a rather whimsical war of attrition among increasingly absurd plot points involving a halfdozen other characters.

The rambunctious quartet of magicians (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco) are bankrolled by a billionaire mogul, Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine), and closely followed by a mysterious debunker, Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman). And when bank robberies become an issue, an FBI agent (Mark

Eisenberg’s quiet success in maintaining a comic tone with his character’s contrarian arrogance may be the film’s lone glimmer of acting brilliance. Ruffalo and Laurent have the film’s closest approximation of real character parts, but neither gets to bring much spark to the film’s half-hearted gestures at odd-couple romance and police-story parody.

Director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk, Clash of the Titans, and two Transporter films) seems ill-suited to a film that presumes to combine high-concept CGI action with whimsical indie-spirit spoofing.

His direction of the action works nicely in concert with the cutting-room sleight-of-hand of editors Robert Leighton and Vincent Tabaillon, but with actors and characterization he’s little more than an assembly-line traffic cop.

One of the mottoes of the story’s illusionist/magicians is: “The closer you look, the less you see.” That, of course, applies to the film itself, except that in this case, even if you don’t look too closely, there’s not much magic in Now You See Me. Ω

After crash landing on an overgrown Earth one thousand years after humanity has fled to despoil other planets, a young man must tap his inner strength to outwit the hostile flora and fauna and save his seriously injured father. Despite some Scientology elements, After Earth is divertingenough entertainment. M. Night Shyamalan’s direction is assured without being ostentatious; the pacing is tight, the script is basic but well-crafted (sort of My Side of the Mountain in a sci-fi wrapping); Will Smith has settled in to a nice gravitas; his kid Jaden ain’t too annoying; and the FX design is kind of lovely. After Earth would make for a sweet Father’s Day at the matinee. Too bad it’s tanking. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13 —C.B.

A computer-animated feature about a teen girl who is magically transported to a fantastical secret world deep in the forest.

story’s “star,” but the narrator of the novel—young Nick Carraway—is more truly the central character here. His account of Gatsby’s fleeting “greatness” is a catalytic phase in the story of his own rise and fall.

The cast is a good one—Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Carraway, Carey Mulligan as Gatsby’s dream girl, Daisy Buchanan, etc., but Luhrmann’s razzle-dazzle direction is so relentlessly attentive to flashy surfaces that none of the performances have much depth. The Hangover Part III

I wish they’d just used the same gimmick as the first two, the one where the mismatched goofs who form the Wolfpack (Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis) are scrambling around trying to undo all the damage from a wild night that they can’t remember thanks to being dosed by mind-erasing drugs. Instead we get a weak premise set up ridiculously by a cranky crime boss played by John Goodman.

There are a few funny bits (mostly provided

by Ken Jeong as the criminally insane Leslie Chow) scattered along the path of destruction they cut from Tijuana to Las Vegas. But the funniest moment by far comes once the credits have already started rolling, and it’s of course in the aftermath of another forgotten night, one that would’ve been a more promising starting point for round three.

Iron Man 3

This time around übercapitalist and Iron Man alter ego Tony Stark (the always entertaining Robert Downey Jr.) and his faithful companion Pepper Potts (the everannoying Gwyneth Paltrow) have their domestic bliss disrupted by yet another supervillain’s personal vendetta. Things blow up and people die until Iron Man jumps back into action and resolves things in an interminable maelstrom of CGI pixels. The 3D is fine, and the scheiss hits the fan with a liquid consistency. But IM3 isn’t very complicated, and the villain’s motivation for all that subterfuge and destruction in pursuit of destroying Stark is kind of absurd. But the banter is amusing, with a couple of gags that nail it out of the park. Cinemark 14. Rated PG-13 —C.B.

Mud

With river rats young and old haunted by misadventures and illusory romance on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi River, the latest film from Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) feels a little like a modern-day Huckleberry Finn. A kid named Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and his pal Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) go prowling for a boat wedged in the treetops of a wilderness island and cross paths there with a scraggly fugitive named Mud

(Matthew McConaughey). Mud’s obsession with erratic dream-girl Juniper (Reese Witherspoon) brings tattered romance and other troubles into the action. Mud, a battlescarred neighbor (Sam Shepard), and Ellis’ uncle (Michael Shannon) are all variously compromised alternatives to the kid’s parents who are in the process of breaking up. A vengeful patriarch (Joe Don Baker) from nearby eventually forces a climactic shoot-out, but the movie’s real interest resides in the oddly tender tragicomedy that emerges from the characters’ heedless lowrent dreaming. Renoir

More idyllic period piece than artworld biopic, this leisurely episode from the last years of the great impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir offers up an enchanting mixture of art history; the summer of 1915; the lush countryside of the South of France; sensuality of a particularly French sort; and a glimpse or two of incipient film history. Middle Renoir son and future filmmaker Jean, home from duty in World War I while his wounds heal, gets besmitten with the brash charms of fledgling actress Andrée Heuschling, a new addition to the small host of models, maids, and female aides that populate his widowed father’s bucolic estate. The richly colored atmosphere created by director Gilles Bourdos and cinematographer Mark Ping Bing Lee takes precedence over the big dramas occurring just off screen and leaves us quite content to hang out with the Renoirs in a Renoir movie that seems inspired by the elder Renoir’s paintings. Pageant Theatre.

Star Trek Into Darkness

In J.J. Abrams’ follow-up to his 2009 reboot of the franchise, Chris Pine is back as a young Captain Kirk, and this mission into space has Kirk taking the Starship Enterprise crew to Kronos, the dangerous planet of the Klingons, on a mission of vengeance.

There is some good chemistry—especially in the lighter moments—between Captain Kirk and first officer Spock (Zachary Quinto), but when the interactions get overly dramatic (a few over-the-top close-up shots beg for a Saturday Night Live spoof) things come to a halt. To be fair, the film must be caught up in its own spectacle, because everything is expected to be such a scene in a space epic.

This works impressively well most of the time for the action-adventure scenes, but no so much for the interpersonal ones. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13 —R.B.

The Great Gatsby

Some of what I like about Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby extravaganza is just the simple fact of a visualization of the characters, the settings, and the celebrated events of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel.

More substantially, Luhrmann deserves some special credit for staying true to an aspect of the novel that often gets neglected: Gatsby is the title character and the

In search of ‘the dingus’ Locally crafted musical-comedy update of The Maltese Falcon hits the right notes

for a satisfying night of theater. Now settled in comfortably as the venerable playhouse’s artistic director, Miller and company by have shaped a delightful production Alan out of the director’s original musical, Sheckter The Black Bird Sings. It was laughs all around on opening night as a tale of suspense and intrigue, set in downtown San Francisco in the late 1940s, has been turned into a melodramatic, song-filled screwball comedy.

The two-act play is anchored by REVIEW: William Petree, who assumes the The Black Bird role of detective Sam Spade, made Sings shows famous by Humphrey Bogart on the ThursdaySaturday, big screen in 1941. Jones’ stage presence, timing and brashness, and her characters’ persistence in scouring the globe to take ownership of the solidgold Maltese falcon, particularly helped the production flourish.

Local theater veteran Jeff Dickenson showed off his superior dramatic chops as Jasper Birdsinger, who for 18 years has pursued the Maltese statue (affectionately referred to as “the dingus”). And Conan Duch brought his A-game as well as Willy Wilmer, a tough 30 CN&R June 6, 2013

customer who doesn’t quite get the respect he craves.

The folly-filled production includes many moments in which characters suddenly break into song. Hearing the delightful renditions of familiar old pop songs—mostly from the 1960s and ’70s, and backed by prerecorded instrumentals and four live Falconette singers—was a big part of the fun.

Some tunes had fresh new lyrics, courtesy of Miller. The 1964 James Bond theme song, “Goldfinger,” was turned into “Birdsinger,” in reference to Dickenson’s character; and Johnny Taylor’s “Who’s Making Love” was cleverly tweaked to include, “Who’s making love to Miles’ old lady while you were out making dough?” Other tunes included sendups of Jean Knight’s “Mr. Big Stuff,” Lulu’s “To Sir, with Love,” the Frank and Nancy Sinatra hit “Something Stupid” and Honey Cone’s “Stick-Up,” with Jones finding an unusual way to keep the beat during the “Boom shaka laka, boom-boom-boom” passages.

There were many more songs, and other than a few subdued moments due to actors not singing loudly enough, the music provided a wonderful boost to the production. And having the whole cast take turns at lines from a particular classic-rock song made for a very satisfying finale.

Other standouts included Christopher Jones, who was a strong-man’s man as detective Miles Archer; Stephanie Adams, solid as the flirtatious Mary Archer; Rhonda Petree with a fine portrayal of Betty Truehart, Spade’s adoring assistant; and Derek Dozier, who brought some exceptional Moroccan machismo to the stage. And last, JaQuan Sayres deserves a Tony for Best Dance By a Man with a Knife in his Back.

The liberal usage of the space in front of the stage, and the realistic set design of Spade and Archer Investigators—which included a nice window view of the San Francisco skyline—made the playhouse feel especially intimate. That closeness and inclusiveness is one of the joys of Theatre on the Ridge, the area’s oldest community theater, which continues to be active in its 38th year under the matriarchal eye of longtime Ω Executive Director Judy Clemens.

Mack Avenue Records Cécile McLorin Salvant took first place in the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition at the Kennedy Center in D.C., and it only takes hearing a few of the tracks on this, her debut album, to know how justly deserved that recognition was. Now a mere 23 years old, she has the kind of vocal chops and stylistic range few singers can achieve in a lifetime. The repertoire on this release is wide-ranging, from a jazz improv on “John Henry,” the old folk ballad, to Salvant’s own composition “Le Front Caché sur tes Genoux,” a song that draws on a poem by Haitian, Ida Faubert (Salvant was born in Miami and her father was Haitian). In addition to the crisp playing of Aaron Diehl on piano and guitarist James Chirillo, the album is also enhanced by the personality of Salvant herself, a sprite and a vixen who can go from morose to kittenish in the space of a few notes. She has a voice like molasses over warm stones, and a sureness of command on ballads or blues. Check out her mastery on a standard like “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was,” then take note: A major talent has just arrived.

Roger and Helen Ekins Happy Trails Press Count Roger and Helen Ekins, longtime Paradise residents, are among those who like little more than to get outdoors and take a long hike. That urge has led them to explore the many historic flumes and trails near their home, and now they’ve put their accumulated knowledge into this handy, nicely designed and long-overdue guide for the rest of us. Altogether, they describe 21 different PG&E flume hikes and 20 trail hikes in the Paradise area. Even if you’ve explored some of them, chances are you’ll find new ones to check out in this book. The Ekinses also provide fascinating historical information about the many flumes, some of which date from the 1850s. There are two fullpage maps showing approximately where the flumes and trails are located, but no detailed maps showing how to reach each of them. Fortunately, the authors’ descriptions of the routes are quite clear, and each destination is accompanied by a color photo of one of the delights—a waterfall, a pond, a shady trail—hikers will find there.

Melody Magic Frank Vignola & Vinny Raniolo Azica Records Classical music has long exerted a subtle influence on jazz musicians, and on this extremely melodic CD, guitarists Frank Vignola (whom Les Paul singled out as one of his five favorite guitarists in a Wall Street Journal piece) and Vinny Raniolo have chosen to celebrate the style with several scaled-down versions of classical works. Beginning with Beethoven’s majestic Symphony No. 5—whose first four notes are the most famous in classical music—the pair (with violin, accordion and double bass on six tracks) go on to interpret seven other classical works.

Included are a lovely reading of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade and the sensuous “Habañera” aria from Bizet’s opera, Carmen, long a favorite of jazz musicians (it was used with great effect by Bird and Diz on their 1953 Jazz at Massey Hall concert CD, for example.) Popular tunes mesh well with the classical goods, and among the four here are a reflective Beatles medley—“If I Fell/Here, There and Everywhere”—using a Tommy Emmanuel arrangement; Sting’s “Walking on the Moon,” which gets a stylized reggae treatment; and a dizzyingly high-speed “Eye of the Tiger,” the theme song for Rocky III, on which violinist Zach Brock really comes into his own.

MARRY ME ? That picture there. The one of that goof in his backward

baseball cap with lips attached to a bottle of Mad Dog or Night Train or Thunderbird (one of the holy trinity of bum wines). That right there is a young Arts DEVO expertly demonstrating the sharp decision-making skills of a 22-year-old Chico male during the early ’90s. As unbelievable as it might seem to those who know me today, the photo is nowhere near as unfathomable as the fact that it was that very night, at that long-ago housewarming party, that I first met Mrs. DEVO. This week Connie DEVO and I will celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. Skimming through old photos for something to accompany this column on the subject, it was this forgotten photo—more than any of the more flattering shots of the young happy couple—that initially struck a chord with me: How in the hell Boxcar DEVO did she choose that guy?!

Before you get the wrong idea, I have never been in the habit of guzzling fortified wines. I have always been a lightweight who only drank more than a few beers in a given evening to his great peril.

Regardless, that was the first impression I was making that night.

And looking at the photo, I see the guy I was then—living in that apartment, a couple semesters removed from dropping out of Chico State, working part time, with no money, no car, no prospects, and no goals beyond the front porches of my friends and scrounging change for the night’s indie-rock show. It doesn’t seem possible that I would’ve been seen as a candidate for lifetime commitment. I mean, I like that guy and his boyish energy for all things music and friends, but in no way was he thinking about marriage.

Nonetheless, 12 months later I was married. And 20 years later I still am, still as happily, and miraculously enough, I am still burning most of my energy on friends and talking about music (and making a living doing the latter!). The other photo I’ve included here is probably the last one Connie would pick for me to put in the paper. But I’ve chosen to put this kindaConnie blurry shot, taken at a campground during our honeymoon, here because it’s the image that goes with my first memory of how my wife’s face looks when she notices me noticing her. That bright smile and the smiling eyes that go with it have been a powerful source of energy in my life. And the fact that the expression has continued to happen over the years in response to this guy— from that clueless pup to this less-awkward but only marginally less clueless grown-up—is pretty rad. I’m a lucky guy.

EMPTY STAGE As the school year at Chico State goes dark so, too,

does the stage at Laxson Auditorium. Soon enough, though, Chico Performances will give us something to talk about when they announce the upcoming 2013-14 season this week (June 10). What is hip about living in Chico is due in large part to world-class performers the publicevents arm of the university brings to town. I mean, you can get anything you want at Laxson, just walk right in (it’s around the back), or stomp over to the box office when tickets go on sale (July 1 for series; Aug. 5 for individual tix).

DON’T CALL ’EM YELLOW COCKSPUR WALL Front man Thomas Fogg and

the rest of the Star Thistle Wall crew are releasing their debut EP, I’ll Never Call this House a Home, at a CD-release party at Café Coda, Friday, June 7, with pals Zach Zeller (making his first local appearance in forever), Bran Crown and Redding’s Monk Warrior. The disc, recorded at Origami Lounge, is about as eclectic as a collection of only seven songs could be—a colorful patchwork of trippy, jangly, sometimes-psychedelic and mostly groovy indie rock.

jasonc@newsreview.com The road and sidewalk in front of the Chico News & Review offices look like the scene from a war movie this week, thanks in part to Tom Ripley, a member of the Franklin Construction crew that is in the rip-out-the-old-street stage of building the roundabout at the intersection of First, Second and Flume streets as part of the city’s First Street/Second Street Couplet project. The married father of two has been doing road construction for nine years, and we caught up with him after he climbed down from the excavator that he was using to smash the street and scoop the pieces into a dump truck.

What’s the excavator do?

Any kind of digging, demo-ing, digging underground for pipeline, sewers—anything like that. Some people use them to dig out trees.

Basically it’s kind of the same [as a backhoe], but it has tracks and it spins around in a circle.

What’s the job here?

We’re basically the road-construction crew.

So, we’ll demo everything out—all the old concrete—and we’ll grade it. And then a concrete company will come in and they’ll pour the concrete, and then we’ll do the base rock and pave it all back. And all the little things, the parkway strips and stuff like that.

Is it difficult to maneuver the arm?

There’s some finesse, and you kind of got to get used to it. And each one’s a little different.

They got a little different feel to them. You got to know what’s above you, and below you. You

have markings, like you’ll see the [spraypainted] markings on the street and it’s telling you about where the things are, but you don’t know, so you got to kind of use your best judgment and then have somebody dig down by hand and find it so you don’t rip out power lines and gas lines. If [you hit] a water line, you can usually fix it. If it’s a gas line, PG&E would have to come, shut it down, pinch it off, charge you a bunch of money.

How fun is it smashing things?

It used to be fun. When I first started it was a blast. Now it’s just a job just like any other job; you’re just used to it. You always see little kids who are all excited watching [the tractors].

Ever find anything weird or cool underground?

I’ve never found anything cool. Supposedly [this intersection] is an archeological area, so we could find some kind of artifact or something. If we did that, then we’d have to call somebody in from the city to look at it. [But] I’ve never found anything exciting, maybe an old bottle once in a while. Not that old, like a Coke bottle or something.

FROM THE EDGE

Height I’m acrophobic. I fell off a cliff at Starved Rock State Park when I was nine or 10. I remember falling into leaf litter and then rolling for God knows how long until a tree stopped me. I don’t know if that’s implicated, but it happened.

If I hadn’t been 20 and with my buddies, I would never have gone to the top of the Empire State Building. I did, though, and out on the deck I wouldn’t get close enough to the edge to look through the coin-operated binoculars. I’ve never been to the top of the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower in my hometown.

In 1971 I lived 22 stories above the ground with a leaky wall of glass in the living room. I avoided the entire southern half of the room, and our bean bag chairs—they were actually called chairs, though, of course they were anything but—never got close to the windows. The kitchen and bathroom were far enough away from the windows for me to avoid that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

The bedroom had floor-to-ceiling windows as well, and a balcony allowed me to relax in bed because at least I couldn’t see the sheer drop to the concrete. I can’t say I ever really forgot it, though. I

was always conscious of being in a concrete box way up in the air. We soon moved down to a bigger place on the 10th floor, which felt much better.

Probably the most courageous thing I’ve ever done was go over the edge of a cliff in Palisades State Park outside Garretson, S.D., in the summer of 1982. I was about to rappel down the cliff face, and once I got over the edge and was actually hanging in my harness, I enjoyed the trip down, kicking off from the rock and having a great time. I got to do that because I inched my way over that edge.

For years, I yearned and dreaded to go the Grand Canyon, thinking that being close to a hole a mile deep would probably kill me outright, or might as well. When Janice and I went to the Grand Canyon last year, she went right out onto a promontory and then right over to the edge and leaned on the railing. I was reading a plaque near the entrance and trying breathing exercises.

As part of my current attention to habits, last week I went up in a glider with pilot Garry Lee to 4,600 feet above Oroville Dam, when I disconnected us from the tow plane and we floated around for a half hour and landed gently where we started. Wow. June 6, 2013
