If we are going to renew our partnership and address these issues collaboratively, on Labor Day and throughout the year, we need city and university staff at the table focused on solutions designed to truly shift the culture.

At our last Town and Gown meeting, student leaders from SAVE proposed a number of strategies as an alternative to the Labor Day float. The city certainly hopes these student-generated ideas will be supported and developed by campus leaders for implementation in the fall. Imagine the impact if a large portion of new student citizens explored what our beautiful community has to offer over Labor Day weekend: a morning run in the park, team-based scavenger hunts focused on discovering Chico’s history, a BBQ, swim, band and softball at alcohol-free One-Mile at Bidwell Park.

The list of ways to engage students and citizens is endless, but the first step is believing we have the power to shift Chico’s culture in a new direction. If we want students to learn about activities our community has to offer, then let’s invite them into our community and immerse them in the myriad positive, healthful activities we have to offer. Will it change the culture overnight?

Since the “scandal” went public, politicians of all stripes, from President Obama on down, have lined up to accuse the IRS of deliberately targeting conservative activists, violating the public trust.

In fact, the Times reports, it was more a matter of “an understaffed Cincinnati outpost that was alienated from the broader IRS culture and given little direction.” Confused about the rules they were enforcing, the agents tagged nearly 400 organizations with Tea Party in their names, but they also tagged at least two dozen liberal-leaning organizations and some that seemed apolitical.

Ultimately, this incident says more about the dysfunction and disarray of the IRS than any conspiracy to target conservative groups. Of course, Republicans and other Obama-haters are doing all they can to put the blame on the president, even though it’s clear that he was unaware of the problems until the inspector general issued his report. Ω

Time to annex Southside Kudos to Butte County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill

Connelly for doing what Oroville city officials have avoided doing for decades: pushing for annexation of Southside.

If you look on a map of Oroville, you’ll see that city land surrounds Southside on three sides. Southside is the densest neighborhood in Oroville. Its residents work, shop and play in the city, but because their neighborhood is part of the unincorporated county, they lack the urban services the city provides its residents.

For years candidates for the Oroville City Council have voiced support for annexing Southside, but once in office they do nothing to bring it about.

It’s understandable why that’s so: Southside is mostly poor, has little in the way of revenue-generating businesses, and has many potentially costly needs. But, as Connelly says, annexation is the right thing to do.

Connelly, who represents the Oroville area on the Board of Supervisors, said he will serve on an ad hoc committee to examine the issue and bring it back to the board in July. We encourage city officials to join the effort and make a sincere effort to bring Southside into the fold.

If Oroville wants to be seen as a modern, progressive, forward-thinking city—and we believe it does—it must do something about Southside. As long as continues to ignore this pocket of poverty in its midst, it will be seen as a community that has failed in its fundamental role as provider of services to the people who live there. Ω

One that got away I was clearing out my email folders the other day when I came to one labeled “Miscellaneous.” In it I found a series of emails to and from Steve Martarano, the spokesman for what was then called the state Department of Fish and Game.

Suddenly I remembered: Of all the stories I’d set out to do, this was the one I most regretted not completing.

I had contacted Martarano because I was doing a follow-up to an Oct. 18, 2007, story I’d written about the Oct. 8 death of 39-year-old Bartyn Pitts at the hands of DFG Warden Joshua Brennan.

As Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey described it, Pitts was then living in the foothills above Lake Oroville, tending a collective medical-marijuana grow. The night before, Brennan, using his spotting scope, had witnessed him at an illegal campfire on the Feather River. The next day Brennan drove up to Pitts’ camp and gave him a ticket. Also present was Matthew McQuaid, a friend of Pitts’.

As Brennan drove away, he radioed in Pitts’ name for a check of any outstanding warrants. Sure enough, there was a $50,000 arrest warrant from Hawaii on a charge of distributing methamphetamine.

Brennan went back to arrest Pitts. And that’s when everything went south.

Pitts, now facing a serious felony charge, became extremely agitated, refusing to submit and be handcuffed and walking frenetically in circles. Suddenly he “jogged,” as Ramsey put it, to his motor home and went inside.

Brennan, sensing trouble, pulled out his handgun. Pitts emerged, holding a shotgun, and aimed it at Brennan. He fired once, Brennan fired several times, and when the shootout was over Pitts was dead. An investigative team later determined his death was “justified,” Ramsey said.

But was it? Why didn’t Brennan call for backup? I asked Ramsey. Reminding me that his own father had been a warden, Ramsey said wardens historically have worked alone.

I didn’t buy it. Brennan was outnumbered two to one.

Red shotgun shells littered the ground, so he knew Pitts had a weapon. Besides, Pitts wasn’t going anywhere, and Brennan was only 20 miles from Oroville. A couple of deputies could have been there within minutes. Bartyn Pitts didn’t need to die.

I wrote the story, but I couldn’t stop thinking about Pitts. So later I called Martarano, who agreed to forward some questions to DFG Chief Nancy Foley. “Wouldn’t three, or even just two, officers have been in a better position to handle Pitts than one?” I asked her. “Was it appropriate for the warden to put himself in a situation where he could not maintain control?”

I never heard back from Foley. I left Martarano some phone messages, but got no response there, either. Gradually the story faded and I forgot about it. Until this week.

The value of pawn Re “The real pawn stars” (Cover story, by Jaime O’Neill, May 16): This well written article really clears the seedy image of pawn shops. The people who use pawn have nowhere else to turn, so the pawnbrokers are providing a valuable service and employment.

I have been in these shops, and the characterization of the staff and the physical condition of the stores is very accurate. Also, as you stated, the ladies are beautiful and intelligent. Danielle could get me to pawn my house if they would take it!

The market ain’t broke Re “Exercise in futility” (Newslines, by Robert Speer, May 9): Some business owners say that the Saturday market hurts them somehow, but my experience is different. Today I started at the bagel shop, got produce at the market, and then made purchases at the natural foods store and the music store.

On the way to the feed store, I looked around the antique stores. Often I stop at the bike shops, used-record store, bookstores and the hardware store. The nice manager at the thrift store tells me that because of the market, Saturday is her best day every week.

In 30 years in Chico I have never had trouble finding a place to park. Homeless people do not influence my shopping choices. Business owners: Are you offering a reasonably priced product that people want?

Landlords: Are you charging an affordable rent, or would you rather see your property vacant? DCBA: Is there any unbiased research that addresses real shopping issues?

Fellow Chicoans: Do we need to save a few dollars by shopping online, or could we rather think about the place where we live?

Am I missing something here? The farmers’ market, this gem, this center of community, is not “broke.” Why do we need to “fix” it?

And now Mayor Mary Goloff and Councilman Sean Morgan seek a new venue! Let’s let them have their silly little market on Sunday. Let’s analyze: 1) Most vendors at the Saturday market have church and/or family and/or prior business commitments on Sunday; 2) most of the Saturdaymorning customers have the same commitments and do not come downtown on Sunday mornings; 3) most Saturday-morning customers expect to get their fresh fruits and produce on Saturday morning so they can enjoy them over the entire weekend.

Recommendation to Chico City Council: If you cannot do anything positive for us, at least do this— Leave us the hell alone!

Another leadership idea Re “Chico’s lack of leadership” (From This Corner, by Robert Speer, May 16): I appreciate Mr. Speer’s observation regarding a lack of leadership on the City Council. I agree the mayor needs time and support in order to provide leadership.

However, the task of leadership must be shared by all council members, and all neighborhoods in Chico must benefit.

Currently we elect council members citywide. The campaigns are expensive, exhausting and won by advertising and phone banking.

This system leaves many neighborhoods represented by people who live outside of them. For neighborhoods with council members as residents, too frequently these leaders remove themselves as advocates, stating they are obligated to represent the “entire community.”

Mr. Speer points out that the city of Sacramento elects its mayor citywide and supports it as a fulltime position. However, Sacramento elects its City Council members by district, ensuring that all neighborhoods in the city are represented by someone familiar with their needs.

This system should be considered by the people of Chico. It would encourage citizens interested in serving on the council to campaign door-to-door, thereby lowering the cost of running for election. Additionally it would give voters an opportunity to meet and evaluate the candidates. A discussion regarding a change of the city charter regarding elections is long overdue.

Beyond badass Re “Rock on, Beethoven” (Music,

I’ve had the good fortune of hearing Beethoven’s Ninth performed live about 10 times, at venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, and the legendary Musikverein in Vienna. In my opinion, the performance of the North State Symphony, coupled with the combined chorus (150 singers on stage), was soaring,

The four soloists absolutely nailed those stanzas of the Ninth Symphony with a clarity and harmony that I’ve never heard before. This one performance in Laxson Auditorium stands shining as The Absolute Best I’ve ever heard from the vocal soloists performing Beethoven’s Ninth. Period. Ever.

Thank you to the chorus, with untold hours of dedication to sing Beethoven’s epic words (in German, per the original). SUSPECTED SHOOTER KILLED BY TRAIN

A man killed attempting to cross the train tracks at West Sacramento Avenue early Sunday (May 19) morning was likely fleeing after firing a gun, Chico police report.

At about 3 a.m. Sunday, a Union Pacific Railroad train struck a man running across the tracks in an apparent attempt to beat the train, whose operators attempted to stop, according to a Chico Police Department press release. The man was identified as 30year-old Pedro De La Torre.

Police found a revolver with expended cartridges in his pants pocket—suggesting he had fired the gun multiple times—and noted De La Torre was wearing a latex glove.

Police say investigators spoke with several area residents who reported hearing multiple gunshots and the train’s whistle at around the same time.

Police received reports of a fight at the corner of West Second and Broadway streets about an hour before the accident.

Responding officers recognized De La Torre, along with several other “suspected gang members,” as they fled the area.

SYPHILIS ON THE RISE

The number of syphilis cases reported locally in the first quarter of 2013 is equal to the annual average for the county, according to a May 20 press release from the Butte County Public Health Department.

Four cases have been reported, all involving young men who had sexual contact with other men. Though most prevalent among gay men, syphilis is increasing in heterosexual men and women, according to the release.

Investigation of the patients by Public Health Department nurses revealed the four afflicted individuals may have exposed 19 other men and women through sexual contact.

CHICO LAWYER APPOINTED JUDGE

Gov. Jerry Brown appointed longtime Chico attorney and public defender Denny Forland (pictured) to fill the seat of retiring Butte County Judge Gerald Hermansen.

The 59-year-old Forland has served as a public defender since 1990. Before that he was a deputy district attorney for the Butte County District Attorney’s Office from 1980 to 1984. From 1984 to 1990 he worked in a couple of law offices, including that of Joe VanDervoort, the self-proclaimed DUI King.

Forland received his law degree from McGeorge School of Law. Chico defense attorney Dennis Latimer said that Forland’s appointment is a good thing. “He’s worked in about every aspect of the law, and that is really a rare balance,” Latimer said. “He’s respected by both prosecutors and defense attorneys.”

Longtime Chico News & Review editor retires after storied career

T community paper, even under the best circumstances, can sometimes be described as he task of putting out a weekly

For this reason, CN&R Editor Robert Speer affectionately refers to each issue as “the weekly miracle.” by Ken Smith As Speer steps down from the position as the CN&R’s editor kens@ this week—making room for newsreview.com current Managing Editor Melissa Daugherty—he has participated in the production of an estimated 1,500 issues of this weekly miracle in more than 30 years of service.

Prior to landing in Chico, Speer—who originally hails from Fresno—said he moved around a lot as a child and continued to do so after graduating from Fresno State University. He worked as a social worker and elementary-school teacher, and was a graduate film student at UCLA before accompanying his then-girlfriend here in 1972.

Speer said he found in Chico not only a comfortable place to live, but also “a community worth working and fighting for.

“There was a lot to protect here, a lot that was good, and I didn’t want to see it sold out to ‘greed-heads’ and people who wanted to exploit it,” he said. “There was a growing progressive community emerging, but it had no voice.”

Speer initially became involved locally by helping found Chico’s first free health clinic and a group called the April Committee, which was the first organized effort to get progressives elected to the Chico City Council, which it succeeded in doing in 1973. Through his work with the latter organization, he was asked to write a series of articles for the Chico State newspaper, The Wildcat.

“That’s when I realized I had more fun working for the paper,” Speer said, “so when the campaign was over I kept writing for them.” He became The Wildcat’s news editor in 1974, earning $70 a month during the school year, less than he made collecting the $25 a week paid by unemployment during the summer. For much of this time, Speer lived in a cabin in Butte Creek

Canyon, riding to town on a motor scooter and hitchhiking when it broke down.

Meanwhile, he and a ragtag band of idealistic young colleagues at The Wildcat were evolving the paper into a community publication rather than an exclusively campus-focused one. Increasing conflict with the administration led Speer and two others to negotiate a deal for autonomy; they moved the paper off campus, and on Aug. 30, 1977, the Chico News & Review was born.

This is not Speer’s first retirement or extended leave of absence, and he has served the paper in various capacities over the years including as arts editor, associate editor, and multiple stints in the chief’s seat, and as an interim editor of the Sacramento News & Review. During his times away from the organization, he edited a weekly in Boise, Idaho, worked at Butte College, and briefly pursued a career as a screenwriter (one script he co-penned with Alex Lasker, Seeds of Tragedy, aired on the then-fledgling Fox Network in 1991).

As Daugherty takes the helm, she

said she is committed to continuing this tradition of storytelling: “The goal is to keep that voice, but have it backed up with really solid and extensive reporting.”

Daugherty started at the CN&R as a special-projects editor in 2007, eventually became news editor and has served as managing editor since last year. Prior to that, she earned a degree in journalism from Chico State and cut her teeth as a reporter at the Chico Enterprise-Record.

She describes herself approaching journalism from an “old-school” perspective grounded in hard news and investigative journalism.

Daugherty also doesn’t make much of the fact that she’s the paper’s first female editor-in-chief.

“It’s something I consider an honor, but other than that, it’s just an interesting fact,” she said. “The biggest difference I see is that there won’t be a mustache in the column when I write it.”

Daugherty said the greatest lessons she’s learned from Speer are to always be fair and to aspire to high standards in writing, reporting and editing, and explained she holds her own and others’ work up to what she calls “the Bob test.” She also said she’s happy to know Speer is nearby for advice during the transition time.

“It’s important to me knowing he’s still there, he’s still going to write and be an active part of the community; it gives me some comfort.”

Speer said he’s excited to see where Daugherty takes the newspaper. “She’s smart, talented, very capable, and will bring a whole new perspective to the position,” he said.

Speer’s retirement plans include writing stories for the CN&R that he hasn’t had the time or energy to pursue while serving as editor, freelancing, dedicating more time to his Buddhist practice and his family—wife Denise Fleming and their teenage son, Liam (two adult children live elsewhere)—and doing longdeferred maintenance on their house.

“Most of all, I’m going to enjoy having the day relatively free to do with as I wish. I haven’t had that for a very long time.” Ω

Questions remain despite confirmation of missing woman’s death

ummer Reeser drove from her home in S Oregon to her hometown of Chico last week expecting to mourn the death of her

mother, Victorene “Vicki” Pyrskalla, who went missing in 1996 at the age of 42.

Reeser’s grandparents had been informed by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office on Friday, May 17, that DNA samples investigators had taken from them a few months ago had linked their missing daughter to a Jane Doe in Yolo County.

“I hoped that one day maybe somebody would say something or she’d be found, but I really didn’t think it would happen, so this was an utter shock,” Reeser said during an interview at the CN&R. That body, as it turns out, was found in the Sacramento River 17 years ago, just four months and 22 days after Pyrskalla’s mysterious disappearance.

According to a BCSO press release issued Wednesday, May 22, confirming the DNA match, on May 25, 1996, jet skiers spotted the badly decomposed remains floating near Crawdad’s River Cantina, a restaurant along the Garden Highway in Sacramento. A brief coroner’s report out of Yolo County gives the deceased an approximate age of 43 to 58 and notes evidence of methamphetamine use.

The unidentified woman was buried in a numbered plot at Woodland Cemetery. On Monday (May 20), Reeser, her husband, Tim, and several other family members attended a graveside service there.

But something was amiss.

Reeser pointed to discrepancies she’s discovered in the coroner’s report, including the height and weight of the Jane Doe. Pyrskalla was 5-foot-1 and close to 170 pounds, but

the body was approximately four inches taller and weighed 135 pounds. Reeser says the coroner told her the body’s reproductive organs were intact. But she insists her mother had an ovary and fallopian tube removed, and likely would’ve had uterine scarring from endometriosis.

“The body in no way, shape or form matches my mother,” she said. “I understand there is a DNA match. How did that DNA match come to be?”

The report also lists the death as a probable drowning, which makes no sense to Reeser or her family, especially considering the circumstances surrounding Pyrskalla’s disappearance.

Pyrskalla, who had two daughters,

vanished from her father’s small almond farm near Chico River Road on Jan. 3, 1996.

Her father, Harmon Wright, and husband, Fred Pyrskalla, as well as the rest of the family suspected foul play. Pyrskalla had been staying in a travel trailer on the property while awaiting a court date scheduled for Jan. 10 on a probation violation related to a

She was facing a sentence of two years in prison.

The day after she went missing, Pyrskalla’s familyfound a pool of blood on the ground outside of the trailer. In a CN&R story about the incident from Feb. 8, 1996, Wright talked about the amount of blood, which was determined to be human. “The cops said it was not enough blood to be life-threatening, but I don’t know. It was quite a lot,” he said, indicating an area about a foot in diameter and a couple inches thick. “It was all coagulated.”

A window to his home had been broken into and the cord running electricity to the trailer had been unplugged. The trailer’s door was ajar, and inside were Pyrskalla’s shoes.

Missing were her wallet and purse.

Reeser, just 20 years old back then and a resident of Missouri, had been visiting Chico only days earlier. Pyrskalla had spent time with Reeser in Missouri and told her daughter she wished she could get in the car and go back with her.

“I told her I would leave my stuff [in order to make room] so that she could come with me. But she said, ‘You know I can’t do that, or else [the authorities] will always be after me,” Reeser said. “I said, ‘I know, mom.’And then I left.”

It was the last time she saw her mother.

The last person to see Pyrskalla alive reportedly was a man named Gary Otto Meyer.

Pyrskalla was at a friend’s house the evening of her disappearance and agreed to give him a ride. Meyer, who was questioned by law enforcement, has an extensive rap sheet and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison in 1996 on a third-strike burglary conviction.

Despite the blood and other indications of foul play, Reeser said her family got the impression that BCSO investigators believed her mother had run off to avoid a possible prison term. In a CN&R story in 1996, Pyrskalla’s probation officer, Debbie Grover, said she thought she’d faked her disappearance. “She’s a master manipulator,” she said.

Those words have haunted Reeser.

For 17 long years, she has been battling with the depression and anger stemming from Pyrskalla’s absence. She does not believe her mother is alive, but will not get closure until she finds out whether that Jane Doe is indeed her mother and, at long last, how her mother died.

“I want to know for sure,” she said. “The person in that autopsy report is not my mother.”

iscussion of a possible “civil D sidewalks” ordinance for downtown Chico took so long Tuesday

(May 21) that the most important item on the City Council’s agenda—the parlous condition of the city’s finances, as uncovered by new Administrative Services Director Chris Constantin—wasn’t addressed until the clock was pushing 11 p.m.

In the last five years, Constantin told weary council members, key city funds were overspent by $20.5 million, leading to a cash shortage. By December the city will not have sufficient funds to pay its bills and will need to obtain what’s known as a tax revenue anticipation note, a kind of line of credit, he said.

By January, he said, the city will receive sales and property tax revenues from the state sufficient to alleviate the cash crunch and repay any money borrowed. Longterm, though, the city needs to establish a 10-year plan to restore deficit balances.

The deficit has occurred for several reasons, he said. One is that the city has been taking an average of $2.3 million annually from other funds, such as the private development fund, and adding them to the general fund to balance the budget.

Some of the transfers were not “allowable,” he said, and the city is obligated to repay them.

Also, city fees and charges are below the actual costs of the services provided. Taxpayers in effect are subsidizing individuals who use city services.

Third, the City Council’s desire to maintain a high level of services in the face of a deep recession as well as the loss of RDA and vehicle-license-fee funds “compounded

the problem.”

“The city had knowledge of this years ago, but they didn’t disclose it to the council,” he said. By “city” he meant former City Manager Dave Burkland and Finance Director Jennifer Hennessy.

Current City Manager Brian Nakamura told the council the city is still running a $4 million deficit and needs to “push harder” both to balance the budget and pay back some of the depleted funds. He recommended implementation of cuts totaling $7 million.

A major problem is that there are labor contracts in effect for the rest of this year. They can’t be changed. But it was clear that when negotiations re-open, the city is going to seek major concessions from its employees.

It doesn’t help that Measure J, the telephone tax, on the November 2012 ballot failed. That will cost the city between $840,000 and $900,000 a year, Constantin said.

Councilman Sean Morgan asked Nakamura to provide the council with “three plausible solutions” to the deficit, “including the possible selling of city assets.” He also insisted that any concessions made by labor groups be matched by senior management.

Two citizens who spoke to the issue, Stephanie Taber and Michael Reilley, lashed out at liberal council members, blaming them for the financial problems and calling on them to resign.

Another tool for the police: After lengthy discussion and listening to nearly 30 people speak on the issue, the council voted 4-2, with Ann Schwab disqualified because she owns a business downtown and Tami Ritter and Randall Stone

voting nay, to direct the city attorney to draw up a so-called “sit/lie ordinance” applicable to the downtown.

The ordinance, quickly rebranded as a “civil sidewalks” ordinance

by Morgan, would allow police to cite people sitting or lying on public sidewalks and blocking pedestrian traffic.

Morgan, who advocated strongly for the ordinance, said it was targeted at anti-social behavior, not at any particular group of people. But a number of speakers disagreed, saying it would criminalize people who lacked homes for resting on the sidewalks.

Several downtown business owners, as well as Chief Kirk Trostle, asked the council to give the police this additional tool for dealing with anti-social behavior. Graham Hutton, who owns Made in Chico, showed pictures of people camped in front of the public restrooms across from Collier Hardware. “I bet the only ones who use [the restroom] are the ones blocking the door,” he said.

Pastor Ted Sandberg, speaking for the Greater Chico Homeless Task Force, said the group opposed an ordinance. “It doesn’t address the core issues causing homelessness,” he said. A representative of the local chapter of the ACLU, Dan Everhart, said his board would urge the ACLU to sue if an ordinance were adopted.

Ritter said she opposed the ordinance because it would hurt, not help, the homeless by criminalizing their behavior, and Stone said it was pointless to pass an ordinance when there aren’t enough police officers to enforce existing ordinances.

Tribal standoff Protest in Oroville leads to 20 arrests hortly before noon on Thursday, May 16, S Butte County sheriff’s deputies ended an 11-hour standoff at the Berry Creek

Rancheria tribal headquarters in Oroville when they threw a nonlethal “flash-bang” grenade, causing a diversionary blast and burst of light that allowed them to enter the building through boarded-up windows and arrest the 20 protesters inside.

Butte County Undersheriff Kory Honea said a fight had been expected from the protesters, who ended up surrendering peacefully before they were handcuffed and arrested on charges of trespassing and interfering with peace officers in the performance of their duties.

The headquarters is located next to the Gold Country Casino & Hotel, which is owned and operated by the tribe. The protest was an attempt to stop the permanent disenrollment of 58 Tyme Maidu tribe members of the Berry Creek Rancheria, said tribal representative and secretary Goody Mix. About half of those arrested were up for disenrollment from the tribe. Their membership was questioned due to improper enrollment and lack of documentation proving tribal ties, Mix said.

“We don’t condone violence,” she said, “so this was very disturbing.”

Disenrollment votes had been cast by many of the tribe’s 358 members, and the ballots were inside the headquarters and set to be counted at 4 p.m. that day. The protesters nailed shut the doors and windows of the building with boards and chicken wire, and also reportedly shredded the ballots. Mix said disenrollment votes happen infrequently, and destruction of the ballots was a surprise because there was a 50-50 chance of the vote going their way.

“There was a lot of sympathy for them before this happened,” she said, “and anyone can appeal their disenrollment within 30 days. This was not about money, but about legal connections to the tribe. On a personal level, they could have been stripped of their right to identify with the Tyme Maidu tribe.”

Attorney Mike Ramsey, who negotiated with the protesters from an upper-story window in the casino, said he believes money did play a strong role in the protest.

During the standoff, two groups numbering about 40 each—one supporting and one opposing the protesters—stood outside threatening each other. Ramsey said sheriff’s deputies had to separate the two groups, which at one point engaged in a physical clash.

Those gathered also taunted the media with profanity and threats, said KRCR-TV reporter and CN&R contributor Jerry Olenyn.

“It was a huge melee in back of the buildings,” he said.

At one point, said Olenyn, a rock was thrown at him, landing near his feet, and he said he was told, “Get your camera out of here!” Olenyn said he interviewed a bystander who had blood streaming down his face after being hit with a baseball bat or pipe.

Ramsey, Butte County Sheriff Jerry Smith and Honea spent hours negotiating with an attorney for the protesters. Eventually, law-enforcement backup was called from the Oroville Police Department, the California Highway Patrol and the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

Near the end of the standoff, Ramsey said, the protesters’ attorney was either dismissed or resigned, and it became clear they had no plans to leave.

“We knew the talking was over, so it was time to go to plan B,” he said. “We had to go in and pull the plug before the outside crowds got too agitated.”

Once inside, officers found bear spray, Honea said, which is a high-volume pepper spray, and at least one baseball bat. “We don’t know if the bat was intended as a weapon,” he said. “But I doubt they were going to have a softball game in there.”

A new vote on the disenrollments will be held, with no timetable set, Mix said.

Ramsey congratulated the law enforcement on their peaceful handling of the situation and said he believes there is at least one moral to this tale: “Don’t occupy the White House if you feel the government has done you wrong. There are better ways to work through problems than to commit a crime.”

ORGANIC FARMERS NEED HELP

Golden State farmers are pushing for funding for a program that would help organic growers offset the cost of certification.

Though the last two federal Farm Bills included funding for the National Organic Certification Cost-Share Program, which pays up to 75 percent of a grower’s annual certification costs, the extension passed last New Year’s Eve to avoid the “fiscal cliff” did not, according to California News Service.

California leads the nation in organic-produce sales and the number of organic farms, but there is still room for expansion.

“We’ve seen tremendous growth over the last decade, but we’re still at a place where consumer demand for organic products still outpaces supply,” said Brise Tencer, director of policy and programs for California Certified Organic Farmers. “The value of having their costs partially reimbursed is particularly critical for new or smaller farmers.”

Los Angeles and Paris are serving as guinea pigs for an emerging global effort to track the carbon footprints of cities with more than 10 million people.

As worldwide levels of carbon dioxide reach unprecedented recorded levels—a Hawaii measuring station recently recorded the benchmark CO2 concentration of nearly 400 parts per million—scientists are looking to mega-cities they believe are increasingly responsible for climate change, according to SFGate.com.

High-tech sensors mounted at points overlooking Paris and L.A. have been installed in hopes of determining whether localized efforts (like switching buses from diesel to alternative fuel) have made a significant dent in greenhouse-gas emissions, and that the cities are on the right course to meet selfimplemented climate goals.

NUCLEAR TUNA FROM JAPAN

Scientists have detected radiation from Japan’s 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Pacific bluefin tuna caught off California’s coast.

The findings, published in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, concluded evidence was “unequivocal” that samples from the tuna, caught off San Diego a year ago, were contaminated with radiation from the Fukushima meltdown, according to The Associated Press.

However, radiation levels were well below what is considered safe for human consumption, and the migratory tuna caught by sport fisherman were not headed for market. One of the researchers, Daniel J. Madigan of Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove, said the discovery came during a broader study of migratory patterns of Pacific fish.

The tuna were found to have traces of two radioactive forms of caesium, which don’t exist in nature but are produced by nuclear explosions.

A Share, a Facebook group for local gardeners, had a link to an online article about recent post on Chico Garden

using dandelion roots for tea, wine and more. The thought of utilizing the common weed—which has edible roots, leaves and flowers—made one commenter cringe.

“I know it is closed minded, but I just cannot imagine” using dandelion, said the woman in her post. Other gardeners— including several prominent local permaculture enthusiasts—responded.

Leslie Wilson Corsbie, owner of Performance Design & Landscape, said she juices the leaves to drink, and she also cooks them up and serves them to her unsuspecting teenage son. Another woman, Marirose Jimenez Dunbar, swears by roasted dandelion-root tea—commonly touted as a liver cleanser—as a detoxifying and tasty tea.

Like many plants commonly thought of as weeds, dandelion—Taraxacum officinale—has plenty of uses, and consequently lots of fans.

One local dandelion cheerleader is Sherri Scott, of GRUB Grown Nursery, who suspects that the common aversion to dandelions began in the 1940s and ’50s with the rise of the well-manicured lawn— and the associated herbicides used to maintain it.

“Broadleaf weeds [like dandelions] … were the sign of a bad lawn,” Scott noted.

When she first moved to the GRUB Cooperative on Dayton Road, “there was barely any dandelion or purslane,” two common weeds that she sought out. She now offers dandelion-plant starts, which sit on her display table at Chico farmers’ markets next to tomatoes, basil and sage.

“I get people laughing at me, like, ‘Hey! That’s a weed!’” she said. “I realized there was a great potential … to educate people.

Whether or not [the dandelion plant] was actually sold, I can talk to people about its benefits. Not only is it medicinal, and good for bees, but it’s also a ‘dynamic accumulator’ plant, as it moves minerals up from the soils to make them available to the rest of the plants around it.”

Stephanie Ladwig-Cooper, co-owner of Gaia Creations Ecological Landscaping and co-organizer of the Chico Permaculture Guild, explains that dynamic accumulators like dandelions “have a really big, long taproot,” which reaches mineral-rich subsoils. “When they decay and die, they release all of those nutrients into the surface soils, for all the other plants. …

them”—meaning she doesn’t pull them out by the roots (or spray them with herbicides) but rather chops the leaves off to allow the plant to regrow. Ladwig-Cooper suggests either dropping them on the ground as a mulch or into the compost pile—the “drop” part of “chop-anddrop”—in order to create nutrients that will go into topsoil. According to the Chico Permaculture Guild’s dynamicaccumulator chart, dandelion pulls up eight major nutrients from the subsoil, including magnesium, calcium, potassium and iron.

While those who carefully tend lawns may find dandelions unattractive, both Scott and Ladwig-Cooper often find the lawn itself to be the problem. Scott calls the common Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) “my lifelong nemesis,” admitting that, when househunting, she rejected a house because it had a Bermuda-grasscovered yard, “but then … they sell the seed for lawns.”

Ladwig-Cooper cited Bermuda grass and “sticky grass” (also known as cleavers or bedstraw, from the Galium genus) as two plants she considers weeds, as they “are really pervasive, really noxious.” Yet, Scott puts that same sticky grass into the category of “good medicine,” highlighting the problem with the whole idea of weeds—that every plant has a purpose, and one person’s garden weed is another person’s garden need.

Seeds in Manton warns her customers to beware, because milk thistle, Silybum marianum, one of several debatably weedy seeds the company offers, “has the potential to be a nasty invasive species,” as the company’s website states. The plant is offered in Redwood Seeds’ medicinal-herbs category, as a liver stimulant and blood cleanser.

Lamb’s quarters, of the Chenopodium genus—like its cousin, quinoa—is another weedy plant that sprouts thickly in gardens around Chico. The young plant, with pleasant light silverygreen leaves, is noted to taste like spinach when cooked, and is cultivated as a leafy vegetable in other regions of the world. Instead of pulling the weed, Max Kee, a farmer at Heartseed, a new CSA farm at the GRUB Cooperative on Dayton Road, harvests “volunteer” lamb’s quarters on the farm. At the beginning of May, Heartseed sold a dozen bunches of lamb’s quarters at the Chico Natural Foods Cooperative and hopes to provide it to future CSA customers.

“It is so prolific—it’s a blanket. It fully covers everything,” said Kee, adding that the weed’s omnipresence on the farm “turned around my mental state” regarding weeds. “A weed is kind of like waste—it’s a resource that’s not being made use of,” he explained.

Before he composts it, though, Kee lets some of it grow. “I top it, then come back through to cut the side shoots, and then I pull it,” he explained. He uses the top and side shoots as food, but after harvesting, he pulls the plant to prevent it from going to seed.

Ladwig-Cooper summed up the weed advocates’ general take on weeds: “I usually use the word ‘weed’ in quotations. Half the plants … that other people consider weeds, I find useful.” Ω

FOR A VIRUS-FREE HORSE

As summer approaches, Butte County horse owners are urged to get their equines vaccinated for West Nile virus.

The mosquito-borne virus is often deadly for horses, and there are several safe, effective vaccination options for horse owners in preparation for mosquito season, according to a Butte County Public Health press release. Owners should discuss vaccination options with their veterinarian, and all previously vaccinated horses need a booster shot each spring prior to mosquito season.

Symptoms can include stumbling; drooping head; drooping lips, lip smacking and grinding teeth; general weakness; muscle twitching and tremors; hypersensitivity to touch or sound; fever, inability to rise; convulsions; and coma.

REPUBLICANS AFTER ACA, AGAIN

The House voted 229-195 to approve legislation that would completely undo President Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minnesota) proposed HR 45, which represents the 37th time Congressional Republicans have attempted to repeal, de-fund or dismantle the federal healthcare law, and the 43rd day in the 281 days since Republicans won a House majority that the GOP has spent time voting on repealing the ACA, according to The Washington Post.

However, approval in the Democrat-controlled Senate is highly unlikely. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) called the vote “a clear waste of time and taxpayer dollars.”

The GOP continues efforts to repeal the ACA despite the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the law is constitutional and several Republican acknowledgements that Obama’s re-election likely means the law will stand.

GREENER SPACES, BIGGER BABIES

Babies born to mothers living in areas with plenty of plant life are heavier and have slightly larger heads, a new study finds.

Between 2003 and 2008, researchers in Spain examined 2,393 pregnant women, and generated an index of “greenness” up to 500 meters around each woman’s home using satellite images, according to Environmental Health News.

On average, babies born to moms living in areas with more plant cover had head circumferences .05 to .07 inches larger and weighed 1.5 ounces more than babies whose mothers lived in areas with less vegetation. Low birth weights are commonly associated with short- and long-term health complications, while head size is an indicator of brain size and IQ. The study is one of the first to link green spaces to pregnancy outcomes, but is one of many suggesting proximity to plant life improves human health.

“Dsomething out of science fiction.

It’s a high-energy bolt, practically invisible ark lightning” sounds like

to the naked eye, striking roughly one time for every thousand discharges of what we know as lightning.

Its existence first arose theoretically, as a logical offshoot during a computer simulation. Then the physicist who discovered it, professor Joseph Dwyer of the Florida Institute of Technology, was able to detect actual bursts of dark lightning.

Dwyer, a Chico High graduate, has received national attention for his research, in particular for a finding that air passengers could be exposed to sizeable doses of radiation if dark lightning strikes their plane.

“If an aircraft happened to be inside a thunderstorm at exactly the wrong place and exactly the wrong time, when one of these dark-lightning flashes went off, then the radiation doses inside the plane, through all that aluminum, could be fairly elevated,” Dwyer explained in a recent phone interview from his office. “It would be comparable to the level of radiation you’d get in the upper end of medical procedures, like a full-body CT scan.”

Since it’s estimated that every plane gets hit by lightning an average of once a year, it’s plausible that dark lightning

has struck aircraft.

However, lest anyone think Dwyer is ringing alarm bells, he’s quick to add a soothing disclaimer.

“The message is this is something interesting, something we need to pay attention to and figure out, but is not a reason to quit flying,” Dwyer said. “First of all, pilots already know to stay away from thunderstorms; thunderstorms are dangerous places you really don’t want to spend any time in. And dark lightning, we believe, is fairly rare.

“So no one should be staying up at night worrying about their flight the next day because of this.”

Besides, aircraft designers already take lightning strikes into account.

“Lightning is a concern; there’s a lot of current flowing that could damage

electronics and cause problems,” Dwyer said. “The good news is people who design aircraft know all about these things, and for years they’ve been careful to design aircraft to keep the lightning from damaging the people or components within the aircraft.

“The dark lightning, there’s not a whole lot you can do about it. The radiation is so penetrating—it goes through so many materials—that it would not be practical to shield people from it. A much better plan is to learn where it’s likely to be and do your best to stay away from areas like that.”

This is where Dwyer’s ongoing research comes in. Not only is he studying where dark lightning emanates, he also is assessing dispersal patterns, both of the bolts themselves and the high-energy particles they deliver.

“The software was working very nicely, but it started doing something unexpected,” Dwyer said. “We began seeing discharges that involved gamma rays and high-energy particles, electrons and positrons, all this exotic stuff.

“We eventually figured out this was explaining perfectly these gamma-ray bursts that had been seen from thunderstorms by spacecraft. … Then we had the additional revelation that this was producing some of the biggest discharges within thunderstorms, which people had measured with radio waves.

“So it started out as a theoretical idea that began fitting more and more of the observations, and it all kind of clicked together: Wow, this is a new form of lightning!”

The name “dark lightning” is modeled on the physics term “dark matter”—material in space that cannot be seen with telescopes and also first came to light, so toDESIGNER speak, JEN_PU as a theory.

Dwyer since has constructed detectors for dark lightning, and his research continues.

“It’s really amazing that something as common as thunderstorms could still be hiding something like dark lightning from us,” Dwyer said. “You have to wonder what else is up there that we don’t know about.” Ω

one of three FIT professors focused on lightning. He’s as surprised as anyone that he’s in what’s known as the “Lightning Group”; when Dwyer came to FIT in 2000, he was an astrophysicist.

“We’re in central Florida, a bit south of the Kennedy Space Center, and this is the lightning capital of the United States,” he said. “I’d been working on space instrumentation for several years, and that’s what I was hired to do.

“But when I got down here, I realized lightning is really cool, and I looked into it a bit and found lightning is really an unsolved problem in science. Very few people are working on it, and there’s a whole bunch of big questions on it. Eventually I shifted over to lightning and did less and less space physics.”

That required a bit of “retooling”—taking his physics background and applying it to a new field with additional study. It took two years, and he slid into his new niche.

“I was lucky that what I was interested in doing was seeing if lightning would emit X-rays,” Dwyer said, “and the reason I wanted to do that was I had been working with X-ray detectors for space missions, doing X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy. … Just right off the bat we established that lightning emits X-rays, which wasn’t known before then, and it got me in the field with a big splash.”

n a windy day this spring, Kyle Warner was on his self-constructed backyard racing track

doing what he loves—riding his mountain bike.

It was so windy, in fact, that Warner felt his bike push sideways in mid-air after hitting a jump. He attempted to adjust, but the awkward landing popped his front tire; he fell flat on his back, and his head hit the ground hard. The crash “set my spine forward on my top vertebrae, and I got a pretty solid concussion, too,” he said.

As is typical of Warner’s attitude, he found something positive in something ugly.

“That was my first crash in about a year, and I was actually pretty stoked,” Warner said, smiling widely. “You get tentative if you haven’t fallen in a long time. It makes you feel like you’re not made of glass when you crash really hard.”

Warner has sacrificed what’s typically most important to 20year-olds—nights with friends, parties, dating—in his pursuit of a long-term career as a professional mountain-bike racer.

He’s stayed up countless nights sending hundreds of emails to bike companies seeking sponsorships. He spends mornings toiling away in the gym, striving for allaround athleticism.

He goes to extremes to challenge himself— lately, he’s practiced holding his breath for Warner, 20, in Upper Bidwell Park.

minutes on end while solving puzzles, preparing his brain to make snap decisions without sufficient oxygen supply.

Above all else, Warner rides his bike.

Shortly after graduating Chico High

School in 2011 and following a dominating stretch on the regional junior downhill racing circuit, Warner became a professional mountain-bike racer. This past winter, he formed the Young Guns, a two-man, Chicobased racing-team, with 20-year-old Chico State student Bobby Zidek, a talented rider in his own right.

Together, they are focusing on enduro, an emerging discipline that combines the speed and skill of downhill racing and the endurance of long-distance, cross-country riding. The sport’s popularity has “exploded” over the last year, Warner said, relating his excitement in being on the forefront of what looks to be a national trend away from traditional downhill racing.

And Warner appears on the verge of breaking into the top-10 riders in the nation during the upcoming season.

After ranking No. 14 last year as the second-youngest racer on the enduro circuit, Warner had a busy off-season—he signed a one-year sponsorship contract with the international company Felt Bicycles, was featured in full-page spreads in biking magazines like Mountain Bike Action and Decline Magazine, and lined up 20 sponsors for the season, all while maintaining a strict riding and weight-training regimen.

As those close to him have noted, his focus on racing has taken on a different nature since turning pro. His longtime best friend and childhood neighbor, Adam Moore, agreed he has changed—while Warner was always passionate about his sport, now he radiates a palpable intensity that drives his every move.

Aspects of Warner’s life not directly related to his pursuit of a long-term career as a professional mountain-bike racer have faded to the background; even his part-time job at Greenline Cycles proved to be too much of a commitment. He recently quit, after agreeing to work on bikes when he can, and now devotes his full attention to training for the upcoming enduro season that will kick off in earnest at the end of this month.

That is not to say Warner is certain of the path ahead.

“By the time I’m 23, I should know if I’m going to make it,” he said. “But it all hinges on this season.”

The upcoming enduro circuit will test

Warner’s abilities against the fastest and most seasoned riders in the nation, take him to the technically challenging slopes of Whistler, British Columbia, and send him hurtling down a French glacier at speeds in excess of 60 mph. The results at the end of the season likely will determine whether he lands a lucrative, long-term contract extension.

If he fails, it certainly won’t be due to lack of commitment. Much like what he does on his bike on a daily basis, he is taking a leap of faith he finds simultaneously daunting and exhilarating.

“It’s like standing at the edge of a pool with your toes in the water versus jumping,” he said softly. “You’ll never know what it feels like until you go all-in.”

Warner and Zidek believe enduro is

taking off because it’s similar to what casual riders do with their friends, and the competitions themselves foster more social interaction than downhill and cross-country events.

In between timed downhill sections (there are usually five to seven different trails at each event), competing racers often ride back up to the top of the mountain together.

Throughout the day, riders will spend several hours on their bikes, racing for about 30 minutes total.

“The average rider, when they go out and ride, they’re essentially doing an enduro,” Zidek said. “They’re not going up the hills that fast, but they’re really pushing themselves on the downhill sections, which is really what enduro is all about.”

“In downhill racing, it’s so serious,” Warner said. “You don’t see anyone all weekend, you don’t talk to anyone. You race for about two and a half minutes and you go home.”

As a team, Warner and Zidek help each other train and market themselves to bike companies. But when it comes to racing they often end up as competitors.

Though he’s always reveled in the

simple pleasure of riding his bike, Warner was initially drawn to the trails in Upper Bidwell Park because of the solitude they offered. Beginning in the sixth grade, Warner carried the enormous weight of being “the head of household.” His single mother, Jeanette, “has always been clinically depressed,” Warner explained, but her condition—and consequently, Warner’s life at home—was made worse by his brother’s tragic motocross accident in 2001.

“He had a bad accident where he broke both his legs and wasn’t able to race any-

more,” Warner said, and his brother’s ongoing health problems related to the injury “made my mom even more depressed.”

The situation was compounded by his mother’s treatment for hepatitis C (contracted from a bad blood transfusion after giving birth to an older brother in 1979), which is similar to cancer treatment in that the side effects can be debilitating. For a long stretch, Jeanette was “completely wiped out,” Warner said, unable to get out of bed, much less help him deal with the adult responsibilities he assumed as an adolescent.

The stress almost became too much to bear in Warner’s early years at Chico High School. During his freshman year, he found momentary distraction as the second-string quarterback on the football team, but the three-hour practices offered too brief a respite.

“I had to get away as much as I could,” Warner reflected. “I didn’t want to go home.”

Moore, his best friend, recalled introducing Warner to mountain biking around the time he was playing football. He traded his mountain bike for Warner’s “junker BMX bike.” Riding in Upper Park offered the perfect escape for Warner—he could ride as long as he wanted, which was often long into the night and early morning hours. It was a positive outlet for a teen who “had nothing,” Moore said.

“What was going on was such a bad situation that I could see a lot of kids at that age becoming suicidal,” he said. “He was kind of a lone wolf; there weren’t many people he could call. If Kyle learned a new trick on his bike, he’d call me. He didn’t have anybody else he could really show it to, not even his mom.

“It would have been really easy for him [to go down the wrong path],” Moore continued. “Instead, he said, ‘I’m going to go ride my bike.’ That’s the difference between what could have been and what is, now.”

Warner quit the football team after his freshman season. Though he didn’t know it then, it was the first in a series of moves that would allow him to adopt racing mountain bikes as the central focus of his life.

By all accounts, Warner was a natu-

ral from the first time he got on a mountain bike, and his skills improved quickly. As he rode for such long periods of time, he developed exceptional endurance for climbing as well as the bike-handling skills necessary for high-speed descents.

“I was lucky because I was good at it naturally, and I had people pushing me,” Warner said. “I got my first taste of success—I won the first race I entered—and I was like, ‘OK, this is pretty fun.’”

Warner proceeded to excel in the junior circuit, winning 23 of the 27 races he entered and building a reputation in the local mountain-biking community with each victory.

“There’s no one in Chico on his level; he’s just so well-rounded,” said Moore, himself a member of a Greenline Cycles-sponsored mountain-biking team.

Encouraged by his early success, Warner began racing at the professional level at the age of 18. Without sponsorship, he paid his own way into big events. Against the higher level of competition, Warner began to see the need for training outside of riding trails.

In the summer of 2012, he began a weight-training regimen designed by Tyler Newton, an athletic trainer and former professional-basketball player at TNT Athletics in north Chico.

Newton immediately recognized his potential, but saw that he hadn’t yet fully devoted himself to his sport, describing Warner’s mentality as “halfway in, halfway out.” Warner paid for the sessions at first, but as his budget got tight Newton agreed to continue training him pro bono.

“Aside from how good of an athlete he is, the reason I train him and donate my time is because he’s a good person,” Newton said.

“He has good character. I don’t worry about him wearing my sticker on his jersey. He represents what we do, embodies that success is earned.”

In August 2012, Warner left Chico to compete in national enduro events, where he met and befriended many of the country’s top riders. It was then that Warner began to believe a long-term career as a professional mountain biker was realistic.

“On that trip, I got to talk to a lot of guys who are already in top positions,” he said. “I saw I could do it; I knew I could because everyone was just an average person. I took that as an opportunity to be more confident in myself, knowing that no one is really extra special—it’s just who puts in the hard work.” “[Warner] was trying to find himself,” Newton said. “He got the confidence, showed himself what he could do in these races. One of the best guys in the world told him, ‘You’re a better rider than us right now, and once you get fit, you’re going to be ridiculous.’”

When Warner returned to Chico following the tour and resumed training at TNT, Newton sensed an intensity he hadn’t before; he could see Warner no longer had any trace of tentativeness.

Warner was no longer standing at the edge of the pool. He had gone all-in.

“He was like a man possessed,” Newton said.

“Talent only goes so far,” Warner

asserted. “Some people are blessed with a lot of talent; others are blessed with a good work ethic. The people with the work ethic will always over-achieve people with the talent.

are more than a half-dozen major events based mostly on the West Coast, with more in Colorado and one on the East Coast. Additionally, 2013 is the first year of the sevenevent Enduro World Series, in which the Young Guns will compete in Whistler, B.C., and Winter Park, Colo.

For Warner, another season highlight will include the Megavalanche in France, which he described as a “500-person mass-start race, all going down this glacier. You hit 60 mph on the glacier, and then it all funnels into a single track.”

Since this is the first year of the world tour, Warner believes the Young Guns have a unique opportunity to establish themselves.

“No one knows who’s the fastest in the world right now because it’s so new, but at the end of this season we will,” Warner said.

All of the top riders on the enduro circuit are in their late 20s and early 30s, Warner said, suggesting he could race competitively for the next 20 years if all goes according to plan.

It’s that longevity that bike companies like Felt find appealing, Warner explained.

By signing a marketable young rider like Warner early on, they could develop him as the longterm face of the franchise.

“I have a couple friends who make $100,000 a year, which is more than you could ask for riding your bike,” Warner said.

“It’s just hard to get up to that level, but when you do, you become an ambassador and you stay with that company for the rest of your life.”

because I knew I could achieve everything I wanted—I just needed to put in the work.”

Newton, whose career as a professional basketball player took him to Australia, Austria, France and Japan and to the doorstep of the NBA on more than one occasion, has trained hundreds of kids aspiring to become professional athletes. Suffice it to say, Newton knows first-hand what separates good athletes from great ones.

“I’ve been working with kids for a long time,” Newton said. “A lot of times they say they want something, and when I tell them what it’s going to take to get there, they see how hard it is, they don’t really want to do it anymore.”

But Warner is different, Newton insisted.

“He has one of the best—if not the best—work ethic I’ve ever seen in a young man, period.

“The kid’s amazing, man,” he continued.

“He can push himself harder than 99 percent of people can. He doesn’t quit. You challenge him, he’ll do it and go further, almost to a fault. I had to have a conversation with him about over-training.”

On top of riding “pretty much every day,” Warner and Zidek, his Young Guns racing partner, meet with Newton three or four times a week for grueling one-hour sessions at TNT to improve core strength, muscular

endurance and power.

While most serious mountain bikers have excellent cardiovascular endurance and their muscles specific to biking in the legs and backside are strong, Warner explained, he believes he has a significant edge over his competition by focusing on all-around athleticism through weight training.

“There are a lot of [mountain bikers] who don’t go to the gym and just ride all the time, and they’re strong for riding, but if you asked them to do 10 push-ups, they couldn’t do it,” he said.

With Warner’s extraordinary drive in the weight room apparent, Newton emphasized to him that if he wants to establish himself on the national enduro scene he must maintain focus when their training sessions are over— he has to keep his goal in mind when making seemingly trivial decisions in day-to-day life.

“If you want to do something special, you have to act special,” Newton said. “You have to get in the gym every day; you can’t go party. You have to sacrifice time with girlfriends, time with family. You’ve got to train.

“There are a million kids out there who ride bikes—what separates you from everybody else?”

“I’ve seen the way he trains. I’ve seen the way he rides his bike,” Moore said. “He can [make it]; he just needs to catch a break.

Someday there will be somebody standing at the finish line and saying, ‘Wow, that kid’s really fast.’”

“He’s extremely talented, but it really just comes down to the results at the end of the season,” Zidek said. “That’s my honest take on his chances—you have to look at the results.”

Newton added that Warner’s dedication has undoubtedly increased his chances of big-time success.

“I think it’s his time,” Newton said. “I wouldn’t say he deserves anything if he wasn’t earning it, because he is.”

Warner realizes those close to him envision big things for the season and his mountain-biking career beyond, but his own expectations will be the most difficult to live up to.

“I just don’t want to be wasted talent,” he said. “It’s scary to just go for it and chase your dream.” Ω

“We all grew up listening to melodic rock bands like the Beatles and Hüsker Dü,” explains guitaristvocalist Chris Martin, illustrating their wide range of influences. “We just got burned out doing the more expansive stuff.”

Cosy Moments could be called Kinski’s punkrock record. Two songs clock in at—gasp!—under two minutes. Those not-so-cozy moments are countered by instrumentals like “We Think She’s a Nurse,” which unravels at the pace of a sunset. The album was recorded in just a few days, a testament to the band’s trying out new material live for months, even years, before entering the studio. And 24 CN&R May 23, 2013

while Cosy Moments stands out in many ways, Kinski’s familiar wall of sound remains.

“I kind of see it as part of a trilogy with Alpine Static and Down Below It’s Chaos,” Martin says, referring to the band’s previous two releases. “[Producer] Randall [Dunn] wanted to make sure there was a sonic thread.”

Without going into detail Martin says the band has dealt with personal issues over the past few years, which halted production of the album for a while. Bumps in the road are not entirely new to the band. Recording of Down Below It’s Chaos began just after Martin and bassist Lucy Atkinson ended their relationship. In the end, Kinski has emerged stronger. And possibly sounding better than ever.

“I think a lot of bands would have folded going through what we did,” says Martin. “We basically tried to reinvent ourselves and figure out why we do it in the first place.”

Over the years Kinski has shared bills with a wide range of artists, from Japanese space-rock monolith Acid Mothers Temple to some of the sloppiest garage-rock bands on Earth.

The band even got asked to open for Tool in 2007. Martin says they faced some unruly crowds during that short stint with the prog-metalers, but that the band would just knock out some short and fiery 30-minute sets and eventually win audiences over. “It was a total mindfuck,” Martin says of the experience, adding, “I don’t think we’ll ever get nervous in front of a crowd again.”

Essentially, there’s a little something for everyone—even Tool fans—in Kinksi’s music. And again, along with everything else that’s happened along the way, it only made them a better band. Go hear for yourself. Ω

The band has largely flown under the radar for two decades, although recent critical praise frames them as the pioneers they truly are. For this outing, participants were offered a choice of one LP from a stack of vintage vinyl plus one fortune cookie, and were charged with using these as launching points for their own production. The results range from the direct, literal use of smashed records to broader considerations of the lapsed past and the prophesied future, and even harmonious moments between the two.

A first work encountered at the exhibition’s opening was Austin English’s “There’s A Lot to Be Said For A Broken Record,” an expressionistic painting of a female figure with hair of flames and an eye blotted out with the shape of a heart. Beneath the other eye, streaming a rush of blue and black tears, is a fortune embossed over her pale cheek that reads: “Avoid focusing on the negative aspects of the past.” Her

anguished face suggests a figure enmeshed in trauma, one who perhaps will not be comforted by the flat counsel of the fortune. But the title is contradictory, suggesting that within the broken remnants of the past, or maybe the tidy, oft-repeated phrases of advice heard in aphorisms and platitudes, there might yet be something of encouragement or help.

Richard Macias’ sculptural work “Getting Older” speaks to the outdated material of the Kenny Rogers record it incorporates as well as possibly the creeping, uncomfortable feeling of being able to relate to and recognize material increasingly removed from the present. Spending time with many of these pieces, one gets the sense that there is a permeating sadness about the obliteration of the use of vinyl, but a reluctance as well to resign to the loss. The gallery’s and artists’ very project is partially an attempt to rescue the record, in practice making us spend time with the unexpected poetry of moments like the phrasing of Kenny Rogers’ record’s title, “Tell it All, Brother,” a sweet, assuring call for commiserating and a promise of a sympathetic listening ear from the songwriter, and now, the artwork.

During the opening reception last Friday night (May 17), creaky crooner songs filled the large, open room of the gallery, spun from the vinyl grooves by the creators of the exhibition. It crafted a ghostly experience when combined with the visuals of the material of popular melodies nearly forgotten. It worked especially well with Ellen Akimoto’s beautiful surrealistic drawing “Future Mirage in the Desert,” which proposes that perhaps the future is only as substantial as a dream. Examining it in concert with the ethereal songs of eras past made me wonder how concrete and solid any era is, each seemingly destined for obsolescence. Yet maybe we can also hope for the ideal of—as many of these works have—making what Ω was old new again.

James Cotton Alligator Records In spite of having undergone throat surgery for cancer 20 years ago, harmonica player James Cotton (aka Mr. Superharp) continues to blow as hard as ever. Since the surgery Cotton’s delegated the singing to others—most notably Darrel Nulisch, who sings six songs here. He’s also surrounded by a batch of guests that includes Delbert McClinton, Ruthie Foster, Gregg Allman (all on vocals), with Keb’ Mo’ and Warren Haynes singing and playing guitar. Things get off to a rousing start with Cotton, guitarist Joe Bonamassa and Nulisch getting down on the title track. The autobiographical “He Was There” tells of Cotton’s 1954 arrival in Chicago where he gained fame in Muddy Waters’ band. It wouldn’t be the blues without at least one double-entendre song, and “Hard Sometimes” more than fills the bill: When McClinton describes missing his woman, it’s understandable why “it gets hard sometimes.”

“Saint on Sunday” is the lively saga of a woman “who’s two women rolled into one/she’s a saint on Sunday and a devil when the weekend comes.”

Cotton steps mic-side on “Bonnie Blue” to reminisce about the cotton plantation where he was born and sharecropped with his family.

Nasty Habit Ron Dziubla Rip Cat Records I’m not likely to throw a theme party in honor of the Mad Men TV show anytime soon, but if I were to do that, I’d plan to have this album playing when my guests arrived. It’s all smoky sax of the kind once associated with raunchy sex and martinis and noirish nights of intrigue. Ron Dziubla is a tenor- and baritone-sax man who seems to have a keenly articulated sense of the kind of blues once referred to as “gutbucket.” The closing track, for instance, is a Dziubla original he calls “Bordello,” and it conjures languidly funky images of a “gentleman’s club” in the French Quarter, circa 1956. His “Lemon Drop Martini” could have played behind just about any episode of Mad Men, and his covers of “Harlem Nocturne” and “Night Train” conjure images of run-down burlesque theaters or steamy nights in Spanish Harlem. There are a couple of terrific guitar players backing him up on these nocturnal ramblings: James Intveld and R.J. Ronquillo will make you cock an ear to the liquidity of their guitar licks, when Dziubla’s sax isn’t transporting you to a smoky cocktail lounge with a broken neon sign that sputters as you enter.

Even if you don’t care for the direction Deerhunter has gone in the past few years, you still have to admire front man Bradford Cox. While the band’s jagged noise rock has been hewn into a more dilapidated garage rawk, Cox remains charmingly self-assured in what he’s doing. And he should. Not to mention he’s an unabashed fan of music who never sugarcoats his opinions. His confidence showed on 2010’s Halcyon Digest, which was flawless in every way—noisy, poppy, gorgeous and ramshackle. On Monomania Cox fully gives in to his pop proclivities on songs like “Pensacola” and “Dream Captain,” which are immediately catchy, capturing the glittery spirit of Marc Bolan.

And “Leather Jacket II” explores the same blown-out chaos of bands like Thee Oh Sees and Sic Alps. Guitarist Lockett Pundt lends his vocals to the demure “The Missing,” which offers respite from Monomania’s frontloaded assault. Cox’s lyrics veer from brash whimsy (“Dream Captain”) to more autobiographical on “Punk (La Vie Antérieure),” which closes the album with a sinewy guitar line that recalls Deerhunter’s earlier work. It shows that Cox and Co. will always retain a certain amount of elegance— even if deep down all they want to do is grip and rip.

SO LONG, BOB This is it. The last issue with Robert Speer as our chief [see Newslines, page 8]. This time next week, Arts DEVO’s friend and current managing editor Melissa Daugherty will have taken over (Go, Mad Dog!) and Bob likely will be on top of a mountain or in the middle of a meadow communing with squirrels and flushing City Council agendas out of his brain.

As I’ve said before, I’ve been working at the CN&R with Bob for the better part of the last 10 years. And as I reflect on our time as coworkers, I’d say that those early days were like the appetizer to a decade-long five-course meal. As a newspaper newbie, I’d make brief little visits to the seasoned editor’s office for little tastes of interaction—a small bite of savory humble pie over another dangling modifier, maybe a spicy tidbit of irritated protest over suggestions that I completely rework another of my clever, flawlessly constructed intros.

But that was just the teaser for the feast before us …

Alright, that’s enough of that.

We are all DEVO, even Bob. Even though most people won’t get the inside joke, it was worth starting with a nod to Bob’s tried-and-true weekly-paper-as-a-meal metaphor just to get a dozen or so laughs from CN&R editors past and present.

We already slobbered plenty over Bob at his retirement party, but there’s just one more thing I want to say.

I was an English major before I started here, and all I knew about journalism when I arrived was what I learned from one semester at the Butte College Roadrunner (under the tutelage of current CN&R news editor Tom Gascoyne) and what I gleaned from a year’s worth of being edited by local papers as a freelance arts and music writer. My journalism school was right here at this paper, and I learned how to write and edit and look at the world as a reporter from all the editors and writers I’ve shared my time with here.

Bob taught me a little bit of everything, naturally, but most important was his message of telling a good story: Locate the character and simply and clearly bring them to life for the reader. That the people of Chico are the center of the stories is what many feel makes the CN&R special, and what has woven the paper into the fabric of the community. And Bob has been the bulldog guarding the gate, chomping down on any lazy, trite, confusing or otherwise off-track prose (I have the bite marks to prove it) and never settling for half-assed work. He has taken the paper’s mission of serving the community serious, and his commitment to quality control has been infectious.

OK, enough with the sweet talk. Dessert is over. Time for a drink!

SPREADING THE SUMMER JAM On a completely different note: After putting it on repeat for a dozen plays in a row, I am happy to say that the Mariah Carey and Miguel slow-jam collaboration “#Beautiful” is legit (even though the annoying hashtag in the title is nearly a deal-breaker).

The simple, rough-sounding, looping guitar riff will be planted in my head for the rest of the year. I suddenly feel the need to be outside near the garden, with the barbecue fork in one hand and tasty cold one in the other.

It’s almost summer. Beer me.

JJ Abrams continues to stake out new frontiers for Star Trek franchise

A round of Star Trek has a surprising lightness. Oh, there is still drama: deaths being avenged, worlds lthough it plunges “Into Darkness,” this

being saved, and romances becoming tense. But JJ Abrams’ follow-up to his 2009 reboot of classic TV-series-turned-film franby chise feels like a perfect popcorn flick: Rachel It’s forgettably fun, in an endearing Bush way. Abrams has managed to turn Star Trek into, for better or worse (depending on how Trekkie you are), a shiny new toy for 21st-century viewers.

While retaining some of the series’ core themes and most of the original characters, Abrams has created something with mainstream appeal for a

I can divulge is that Cumberbatch plays Harrison with a chilling presence, and is easily one of the strongest parts of the movie.

As for those lighter moments, they originate from strong on-camera relationships, most notably the one between Captain Kirk and first officer Spock (Zachary Quinto). Their famous friendship might be the original “bromance,” and the chemistry between Pine and Quinto is strong enough to sustain that theme. Almost all the big decisions made in their mission are first talked over, heart-to-heart. They always boiled down to what’s more important: going with guts (like Kirk) or logic (Spock style). Although this argument gets a little tiring, it creates tension for the serious moments, and comic relief, too. I appreciate when the strongest relationship in a blockbuster film doesn’t have to

generation (myself included) that won’t need to know the history of Star Trek to enjoy these new films.

Chris Pine is a young Captain Kirk, and this mission into space for the leader of the Starship Enterprise is motivated by vengeance. After a mentor of his is killed by terrorist John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) at the Starfleet headquarters, Kirk takes his crew to Kronos, the dangerous planet of the Klingons, where Harrison has fled. Discovering the real reasons why Harrison—a former Starfleet agent— has gone rogue makes for one of the most interesting twists in the story.

There are a few big ones, in fact, but all

depend on traditional romance.

It’s when Into Darkness tries to be especially dramatic that it loses some credibility. (A few over-thetop close-up shots beg for a Saturday Night Live spoof.) To be fair, the film must be caught up in its own spectacle, because everything is expected to be such a scene: from battle sequences to dramatic pans of the beautiful Starship Enterprise. This works impressively well most of the time for this action/adventure film, but Abrams, who’s also responsible for some less-bombastic dramas (Felicity, Lost) should know how to tone it down with the interpersonal Star Trek scenes.

Regardless, it’s worth jumping on board for this journey, even if (especially if) you’re not a Trekkie.

You don’t have to make a lifelong commitment to the Enterprise crew to enjoy this summer ride. Ω

A lively and moving account of how Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers broke the color barrier in major-league baseball in 1947. As a baseball movie, it’s above average, convincing in specific detail and refreshingly free of fakery. As a social drama in a period setting, it’s evocative and intense even though condensed in ways that leave little room for thematic complexities and depth of character. Chadwick Boseman is excellent in the Robinson role. Contemporary agribusiness, genetically modified seeds, aggressive domination of local markets, the obliteration of traditional farming—Ramin Bahrani’s film sounds like a companion to this year’s Promised Land, but it’s also a fitfully stormy melodrama set in an Iowa family’s farming empire. Henry Whipple (a stressed looking Dennis Quaid), fourthgeneration patriarch, farms 3,000 acres, deals GMO seeds to seven neighboring counties, and badgers his two grown sons to help push the family businesses to larger and larger success. What results is less a social-protest movie than a lukewarm tragedy that might be called “Death of a

Some of what I like about Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby extravaganza is just the simple fact of a visualization of the characters, the settings, and the celebrated events of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. More substantially, Luhrmann deserves some special credit for staying true to an aspect of the novel that often gets neglected: Gatsby is the title character and the story’s “star,” but the narrator of the novel—young Nick Carraway—is more truly the central character here. His account of Gatsby’s fleeting “greatness” is a catalytic phase in the story of his own rise and fall. The cast is a good one— Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Carraway, Carey Mulligan as Gatsby’s dream girl, Daisy Buchanan, etc., but Luhrmann’s razzle-dazzle direction is so relentlessly attentive to flashy surfaces that none of the performances have much depth. Iron Man 3

This time around übercapitalist and Iron Man alter ego Tony Stark (the always entertaining Robert Downey Jr.) and his faithful companion Pepper Potts (the everannoying Gwyneth Paltrow) have their domestic bliss disrupted by yet another supervillain’s personal vendetta. Things blow up and people die until Iron Man jumps back into action and resolves things in an interminable maelstrom of CGI pixels. The 3D is fine, and the scheiss hits the fan with a liquid consistency. But IM3 isn’t very complicated, and the villain’s motivation for all that subterfuge and destruction in pursuit of destroying Stark is kind of absurd. But the banter is amusing, with a couple of gags that nail it out of the park.

Renoir

More idyllic period piece than artworld biopic, this leisurely episode from the last years of the great impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir offers up an enchanting mixture of art history; the summer of 1915; the lush countryside of the South of France; sensuality of a particularly French sort; and a glimpse or two of incipient film history. Middle Renoir son and future filmmaker Jean, home from duty in World War I while his wounds heal, gets besmitten with the brash charms of fledgling actress Andrée Heuschling, a new addition to the small host of models, maids, and female aides that populate his widowed father’s bucolic estate. The richly colored atmosphere created by director Gilles Bourdos and cinematographer Mark Ping Bing Lee takes precedence over the big dramas occurring just off screen and leaves us quite content to hang out with the Renoirs in a Renoir movie that seems inspired by the elder Renoir’s paintings. Henri helps you get prepared for your Memorial Day weekend barbecue

H so California. Sometimes I stand there in my apron, chef’s hat and enri loves grilling. It’s

barbecue mitt, sipping a martini and imagining I’m out by on a sprawling Henri deck overlooking Bourride the cool, misty Pacific. Major Hollywood celebs mingle nearby— in blazers and Bruno Magli loafers— talking about their latest films.

And with Memorial Day weekend coming up, the grilling season officially begins. But cooking outdoors is no excuse for mishandling hot meat. Overcook it, and it’s ruined. Fortunately, Henri has learned a simple trick for ensuring that his meat stays moist and tasty: Go both ways. Let the food cook both on the grate and in a pan atop the grate.

Perfectly grilled shrimp

The grilled-shrimp dilemma: Shelled and de-veined, they cook so quickly that they often end up dry and rubbery; cooked with the shells on, they lose the seasonings—butter, garlic, herbs—once you peel them. I found the perfect solution in a recent Cook’s Illustrated. Naturellement, Henri has modified the recipe slightly.

Ingredients: 1 1/2 pounds extra-large (21-25 count) shrimp, peeled and de-veined (tails on) 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 teaspoon sugar 1/2 stick butter 4 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice 2-3 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/3 cup fresh basil, minced lemon wedges

Wash the shrimp, pat dry with paper towels, and thread onto three or four skewers—flat metal ones work best—alternating the direction of the heads and tails. Brush 34 CN&R May 23, 2013

both sides with oil, and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle one side with sugar.

Prepare your grill so that direct heat is coming from only one side (or either the front or back). If you’re using charcoal, align them in a row along one side; if you’re using gas, use only one burner.

Combine butter, lemon juice, herbs and spices in medium-size disposable aluminum pan, and place on grill on the side over the heat. Stir as the butter melts. Move pan to other side of the grill.

Carefully brush grill with cooking oil and place skewers, sugared sides down, on the hot side of the grill and cook until lightly charred (three or four minutes, depending on how close your heat source is to the grill).

Turn, and cook the other side until meat is slightly translucent (another one or two minutes). Then, using a fork, slide shrimp off of skewers into sauce pan, and stir them into lemon-butter mixture, moving pan back over to hot side of grill. Cook another 30 seconds or so. Transfer, with a slotted spoon, to a serving platter and serve with lemon wedges.

Perfectly grilled chicken

Cook the chicken in a pan on the grill before transferring it onto the grate. This keeps it wonderfully moist but allows it

to get slightly crispy.

Ingredients: 1 whole chicken, cut into parts and skinned (or 2 lbs. thighs, breasts, etc.)

2-3 bell peppers (red or green or combination), sliced 2-3 red onions, sliced 3 cups milk 4-5 cloves garlic, minced 1/3 cup fresh basil, minced Salt and black pepper

Brush the inside of a large disposable aluminum pan with cooking oil (or use spray-on). Spread peppers and onions in pan and place chicken parts on top. Pour milk over chicken and sprinkle with garlic and basil. Season with salt and black pepper. Cook over medium heat for about 20 minutes and then stir ingredients together so that peppers, onions and chicken are mixed evenly. Cook another 15 to 20 minutes, or until chicken is nearly done. Remove chicken from pan and grill over indirect heat another 10 to 15 minutes, or until done.

Note: While both of the above recipes go wonderfully with a chardonnay, sauvignon blanc or white Bordeaux, don’t make the mistake of assuming that chicken and fish always call for white wine—or that beef always calls for red. Drink what tastes good to you, even, if you must, a cold beer, perhaps a Sierra Nevada Summerfest. Ω

Rick Haner started riding a motorcycle when he was just 12 years old and is a member and cofounder of the Ishi chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club here in Chico. The organization is hosting its fifth annual Motorcycle Show and Swap Meet on Sunday, May 26, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Manzanita Place (aka the Elks Lodge).

The Antique Motorcycle Club is a large organization, boasting more than 11,000 members across the United States, according to antique motorcycle.org. It encourages members to own, restore, preserve and study antique motorcycles, defined as bikes at least 35 years old.

When did you find your passion with motorcycles?

I started riding … 44 years ago. I started racing dirt bikes, and then it progressed from there. I own more than several motorcycles.

Ones that run? Probably 12 that I can think of, and they’re not all antique motorcycles.

What do you do as a club?

We have weekly meetings, we organize rides, we organize special events; we did an air show.

We have swap meets. The old motorcycles we show have parts that, if you don’t need, you can sell. It’s a family event. We take rides like, for instance, we took a ride to have lunch and come back, and it’s similar to a bicycle ride or a walk.

What goes on at a show and swap meet?

Last year we had 60 motorcycles, and we have a best-of-show award, which is the people’s choice. We only had one award last year. This

year we have three. So it’ll basically be the show, the best of the people’s choice, and the swap meet will be for if any member or individual no longer needs something, they’re welcome to bring them to try and sell them.

People can come and look at the motorcycles.

If they need one more part to finish a motorcycle, they can find it.

What will the public find at the meet?

Machines made from 1907 to 1970 or so. So anyone wanting to know about any of those motorcycles can come. We can explain who made them and what they’ve done. There’s a guy, he has an 1890-to-1920 collection, and they all run.

Do you feel there are misconceptions about motorcycle clubs?

I definitely do. I think Hollywood has dramatized it quite a bit, and it’s not everything it’s portrayed to be in the negative sense. For the most part, [motorcycle clubs include] individuals who just like to enjoy the riding and have fun.

Corpses When I was little and growing up the only corpses I saw were in caskets at wakes and funerals, with formaldehyde in their veins and make-up on their faces. That’s how I saw my father. I once got a look at an old man who had collapsed sitting in a car outside church, but to me he just looked old, not obviously dead.

I didn’t see a fresh corpse until my mother died.

The home called to tell me she was having trouble breathing, and I went straight there. I could see right away she was different, she was so still. I stared at her, looking for movement. No movement.

I touched her hand, her cheek, and her skin was cool to my touch. I had never touched cool human flesh before. No breath, no movement of any kind.

When the attendant came in, after trying to take my mother’s pulse she told me I could stay a while if I wanted to.

I don’t know how long I sat there on the radiator before I kissed the corpse’s forehead and said goodbye. Not long, because Janice and I went to a party later.

After my sit the Sunday morning Janice died, I could hear that she was breathing deeper than she

had in months, and loudly. Something had changed.

She had quit ingesting anything after Joe’s birthday on Friday, and now this.

“Where are the boys?” That’s the question I heard clearly in Janice’s voice. The whole thing was so natural that I didn’t notice anything was unusual. I had heard that question and other everyday talk like it so much that I simply answered, “They’re both here.”

Much later I realized that she hadn’t spoken in weeks and then only in a whisper.

I had been talking to her and listening to her breathing and holding her hand for many minutes when she drew two deep breaths and stopped. Her hand had been limp and still it was her hand, my wife’s hand in mine. I never heard her last exhalation, it was so gentle.

And Janice was gone. Everything else was the same, the bed, the light coming in the window, the little brass bell she had used to call me with, and the hand I was holding, too. The hand wasn’t Janice’s anymore, though, because Janice was gone. I was holding the hand of a corpse. Then I kissed its forehead and went to get my sons.

I helped the hospice nurse bathe it, heavy and unyielding—not Janice—and then I think I sat outside the rest of the day, the only thing I could think of to do.
