SAVE hopes to bring the Chico community together to continue the conversation regarding a collaborative future. Our community has faced many challenges over the last year, but we have also made great strides. Collectively we can change the culture on our campus and in our community.

The festival is an opportunity for the many programs, organizations and groups in our community to offer resources and connect with each other. As students, we want to show the rest of our community that we are motivated to be a part of a safer and wellrounded future.

between online and brick-and-mortar retailers took a big leap forward Monday (May 6), when the U.S. Senate passed a bill requiring large online retailers to collect state sales taxes on purchases.

The bill, called the Marketplace Fairness Act, was a rarity in this dysfunctional Congress—a measure that appealed to lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. So many Republicans joined the majority Democrats that it passed by a lopsided margin, 69-27.

The bill now goes to the Republican-dominated House, where it faces an uncertain fate. That’s because opponents, in an attempt to appeal to the Republican majority in that chamber, are characterizing the bill as a tax hike, even though it is nothing of the kind.

It’s important that our representative, Doug LaMalfa, understand just what the bill would do, since his vote could be crucial to its passage. Simply put, it would close a huge loophole that unfairly gives online retailers a competitive advantage ranging from 5 percent to 10 percent over their brick-and-mortar competitors.

As it stands, state sales taxes are already legally due on online purchases that would be taxable if purchased in a store. However, online retailers are not required to collect the taxes. Customers are supposed to send the money to the state, but nobody does that, at a cost of $11 billion annually in lost tax revenues.

Not only is this unfair, it is deeply detrimental to Main Street retailers, who are struggling to survive in the face of multibillion-dollar companies like Amazon that enjoy volume purchasing advantages as well as the salestax edge.

The Marketplace Fairness Act would require online retailers with more than $1 million in out-of-state business to collect the sales taxes and send the money to the states, just as Main Street retailers do. It’s a matter of fairness and plain common sense, which is why so many Republican lawmakers have supported it. Ω

Fairness for tenants Anyone who has ever rented lodgings knows that, when it

comes to the security deposit, landlords have all the power. Not only do they sit on your deposit for as long as the place is rented without paying interest, they and only they determine how much of your money you get back.

We understand that not all renters take good care of their dwellings and that cleaning and repair costs sometimes exceed the amount of the security deposit. But that doesn’t justify what amounts to legalized theft on the part of landlords.

A bill now working its way through the State Legislature would change that. Senate Bill 603, by Sen. Mark Leno (D-S.F.), would do three things: (1) require landlords to keep security deposits in separate accounts; (2) impose penalties on landlords who fail to return deposits; and (3) require that landlords pay tenants interest on security deposits. The last requirement is already in effect in some California jurisdictions and in many other states.

There are 15 million renters in California. For many of them, their security deposit is their largest financial asset. But improper withholding by landlords has become so common that most renters don’t expect to see their money again. When the advocacy group Tenants Together surveyed its members, it found that 60 percent of them had had their deposits improperly withheld.

It’s only right that, when a landlord asks you for a significant sum of money to hold as a deposit, that he or she be required to handle that money as if it were yours by putting it into a separate, interest-bearing account for the duration of your tenancy. SB 603 would be a welcome reform of landlord-tenant laws in California. Ω

Two sides of tools Two stories in this issue shine light on the role of electronic devices in our lives. One, “Love in wartime,” by Ken Smith, is about a young Chico couple, Randy and Samantha Eitel, who had to cope with his deployment to Afghanistan just two days after she gave birth to twins. Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, they stayed in touch via Skype, email, Facebook and an Afghani cell phone.

Then there’s the Binyon family, profiled in Christine LaPado-Breglia’s story, “Reclaiming precious moments.”

Alec and Anna Binyon have unplugged from the Internet and relegated the TV set to the garage. The benefit, they say, is that they and their two boys spend far more time doing things—riding their bikes, reading books, hanging out together—than they would if they were looking at screens.

It’s not that hard to give up one’s electronic toys, as I learned many years ago, when I moved into a mountain cabin with no electricity. At night I read by lantern light and listened to the music of the creek. I enjoyed the peacefulness. Five years later, when I moved into town, I felt buzzed by the electrical field that surrounded me everywhere.

Nowadays, I feel colonized by media. The Internet is an amazing research tool, but it’s also a terrible time suck.

Did you know that more than 85 percent of all email is spam? In my work, I spend an average of at least two hours a day sorting through email. That’s 728 hours a year, or more than 90 eight-hour workdays. Ninety!

That’s one reason why I’m retiring in three weeks and heading off to the mountains, where I intend to reclaim my brain.

Such chutzpah: I was amused to receive a press release from state Sen. Jim Nielsen headlined “Lawmakers Should Follow the Law.” This from a guy whose career is built on breaking the law by lying about his residence in order to run for office in districts other than the one he actually lives in.

He did it back in 1990, when he was running for Congress (he lost), he did it again when he represented District 2 in the state Assembly, and he’s done it once more while representing District 4 in the state Senate.

Giving a false voter registration address and voting fraudulently are both felonies. It is also against the law for a California legislator to live outside his or her district. Los Angeles Councilman Richard Alarcón and state Sen. Rod Wright, from Inglewood, face multiple criminal charges for lying about where they live. Both have been ordered to stand trial, with Wright’s court date set for July 15.

Meanwhile, Nielsen thumbs his nose at the world. The Brown administration won’t go after him, no doubt figuring that he’d just be replaced by another Republican regressive. And Tehama County DA Gregg Cohen is a big supporter, so no way he’s going to seek an indictment.

Yes, lawmakers should follow the law. That includes you, Mr. Nielsen.

Two-wheeled scofflaws Re “Ranking envy” (Cover feature, by Melissa Daugherty, April 25): Melissa Daugherty’s piece about Chico’s effort to reach the pinnacle of bicycle-friendly community rankings was a good one. I was especially interested to learn the criteria the League of American Bicyclists applies in rating towns.

The evaluation area in which Chico fails badly is enforcement. I see cyclists every day in flagrant violation of traffic laws. Most of them are riding on sidewalks, but many ignore red lights while treating stop signs and one-way signs as optional advice.

Though it happens all over, downtown seems to have the highest concentration of offenders. I can still see the expression of the young man who zipped just inches in front of my moving car on a blind downtown corner.

I had a green light, while he was traveling on a sidewalk at a high speed. Almost a coroner’s case.

Do I think this issue deserves more police attention than, for example, stabbings or alcohol-induced public nuisances? No way, but law-flouting cyclists are becoming a significant problem in Chico. People would be outraged if motorcyclists or cars drove on sidewalks, but high-speed bicyclists are just as dangerous.

I enjoy bicycling and wish more people would do it, but we all need to follow the damned laws. We may be “going for the gold” in terms of being a cycling town, but with a highly visible number of scofflaws, we may only deserve a tin star.

Words in their mouths The (expensive) posters in downtown businesses proclaiming “Spare change won’t change my situation”: First person? Really?

You had a homeless “spanger” on your design team? Or are we speaking for the homeless again, because they are too far gone to express what they want? I bet they want spare change, ’cause that’s what they’re asking for.

Our culture demands “losers” to define its “winners” and features a stunning lack of social services, which have been under siege since the ’80s. We deliver essentials via nonprofits, churches or us. For me, giving change acknowledges the asker exists; and second, that person gets closer to what they’re after. Whether it’s a burrito, a beer or some dope, that’s their deal.

Are they jerks? Sometimes. They know they’re supposed to feel ashamed. I did too when I was homeless, but only when people were condescending to me.

Organizations that try to solve the problem of homelessness might want us to stop enabling folks who need their services. But face facts: There’s not enough love, tough or otherwise, to solve this problem. Whatever works—but don’t put words in the mouths of

Political power play Re “Avoiding a lawsuit” (Editorial, May 2): Your editorial ignores some troubling facts about Chico’s proposed ban on plastic grocery bags.

Paper bags, even with handles, are difficult to impossible to handle for people in wheelchairs or using a walker. This ordinance would put grocers in the position of illegally discriminating against and denying accommodation to handicapped persons, in direct violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Charging customers for plastic bags, or forcing them to buy reusable bags, could add enough to a monthly grocery bill to put a severe financial strain on people living on low or fixed incomes.

This could easily run to $20 or $30 a month, and while the wealthy sponsors of this ordinance might not feel that, many poor people will be hurt. It’s an assault on poor people, and it’s racist to the extent that poor people are disproportionately people of color.

We have enough of this sort of petty tyranny already. California is already way too far down the road to becoming a totalitarian state. It’s obvious the real motive behind this ordinance is to give bureaucrats another excuse to boss people around and inflict hardships on them to demonstrate their power over them, in classic Orwellian fashion.

Discussions by a taxpayers’ group to possibly start a signed petition drive to repeal any plasticban ordinance enacted by the City Council are underway.

We have all heard the pros and cons of the ban. That’s not what’s at issue here. The council members should manage city operations and finances as duly elected representatives. The majority did not elect or authorize their political correctness to impede upon the arenas of “personal freedom” and “the individual’s right to choose.”

If five political philosophies can restrict the constitutionally protected right to decide at the ballot box; refusing the 70,000-plus voters whose lives will be affected, to vote for or against a ban that places restrictions on personal freedoms of choice, then that’s communism.

During the ’70s, the liberals

below made this same argument.

They demanded ballot-box democracy against a conservative council’s decisions constantly. Those liberals were clearly correct then; but today’s council; its left-wing majority, they are wrong. They are clearly afraid that the ballot-box results might weaken or nullify their misused powers. That’s why they never offered up the ban decision for a public vote.

Talk about a hypocritical slap in the face to people like Jane Dolan, Bob Mulholland, Karl Ory and Kelly Meagher. Their coalitions fought for guaranteeing everyone’s personal right to voice their ballot-box opinion on issues that affected everyone. The Greenline and Bidwell Ranch! So who’s power hungry now?

Hot pistol Re “Guns’ symbolic sexuality” (Letters, May 2): I read with great interest the letter by someone who didn’t want to sign their name to it about how guns are “the ultimate phallic symbol” and that using them is like masturbating. I decided to test this tired theory by substituting my penis for my gun.

When my sweet old donkey collapsed and was suffering through the weekend with no available veterinarian to “put her to sleep,” I masturbated on her forehead. Didn’t work. I still had to shoot her or watch her struggle to breathe.

I was biking the logging roads in Manton and confronted by a crankster who insisted he owned Ponderosa Way and that I’d better turn around. I dropped my pants and pointed my tiny little penis at him. Didn’t scare him one bit. He knew I’d never be able to hit him from 20 feet and had no time for a reload. He had an actual gun, so I pulled up my pants and left.

The most embarrassing part of this experiment was when I was cleaning my penis and it just went off. Accidental discharge everywhere.

Your point about women who like guns having penis envy is well taken. My wife’s gun is bigger than mine.

But sometimes a gun is just a gun.

Bad people with legal guns Re “Too many guns to find” (Letters, by Allan Clark, May 2): Gun advocates often make

statements that are conspicuously untrue. Here is one common example: Mr. Clark wrote, “Gangs, drug lords, smugglers, bank robbers, bad people in general do not get their guns from a store.”

One can easily make a long list of “bad people” who got their guns from a store. Here are a few recent and obvious examples: Jared Loughner, of Tucson, who shot Gabrielle Giffords and others. Cho Seung-Hui, who killed 32 people at Virginia Tech. And I quote the following from ABC News about the Aurora movie theater shooter: “James Holmes purchased four guns at local shops and more than 6,000 rounds of ammunition on the Internet in the past 60 days,” Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates told a news conference this evening, ‘All the ammunition he possessed, he possessed legally; all the weapons he possessed, he possessed legally; all the clips he possessed, he possessed legally,’ Oates said.”

What’s the big hurry?

Re “Put your hands up!” (Guest comment, by Tom Steele, May 2): Wait a minute!

Isn’t that all Officer Stephen Dyke needed to do? Just wait a minute, so he could confirm the identity of Tom Steele’s car? It was a question of a stolen car, for Christ’s sake, not a homicide!

Officer Dyke’s reaction was excessive and traumatic.

A stolen car is not a life-anddeath situation or a “high risk traffic stop procedure,” as the police chief claimed. It is an identity issue that can be cleared up in a minute. Why does this situation even require a traffic stop?

If it is “department policy” to pull a gun and threaten a citizen every time an officer has a question about the identity of a car, then our department policy needs to be changed. What kind of a community do we want, anyway?

What ever happened to “innocent until proven guilty”?

This seems part of the militarization of our police. We didn’t create our police force because we are at war with ourselves. Has “Protect and Serve” become “draw a gun and disable”?

This is a wake-up call to citizens to call your City Council to modify some Police Department policies to be a little more civilized and a little less militaristic!

The Chico News & Review came away with three first-place awards in the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s annual Better Newspapers Contest.

In the contest’s largest circulation category for weekly papers, CN&R took home the top honors for Best Writing (staff writer Ken Smith’s “Bond of brothers”), Best Feature (contributor Jerry Olenyn’s “A monk’s life”), and Best Front Page (Art Director Tina Flynn’s design for “Girls in a jam”).

Other local first-place honorees include the Chico Enterprise-Record, which took home two awards for photography in its category for dailies with circulations between 15,000 and 35,000. The Orion, Chico State’s student newspaper, won awards for Best Writing and Best Sports Story in its collegiate division.

Meanwhile, Valley Mirror Publisher Tim Crews—“Mr. Sunshine”—earned the CNPA’s Freedom of Information Award.

SUSPENDED FOR BREWING, PARTYING

Two Chico State fraternities— Sigma Chi and Pi Kappa Alpha—were served long-term suspensions on May 6 for breeching university policy.

Sigma Chi was suspended for two years after university officials learned a fraternity officer was making beer in the chapter house, according to a Chico State press release. Sigma Chi was on probation for hosting a party at an annex house in August 2012. Pi Kappa Alpha was suspended for hosting a party at three private houses in downtown Chico on April 13. All Greek functions were prohibited this spring, and Pi Kappa Alpha was explicitly warned by Student Life and Leadership not to host the party.

Chico State President Paul Zingg temporarily suspended all Greek activity on Nov. 15 in response to reports of alcohol violations, hazing and assaults. Zingg issued rules for reinstatement in February, and prior to the May 6 suspension all but two Greek organizations—Kappa Sigma and Phi Beta Sigma—were in good standing with the university.

FIRING THE BIG TALENT?

Chico’s favorite weatherman, Rob Blair, confirmed that he was cut loose from his job at television stations KHSL and KNVN, where he co-hosted the Wake Up! morning show.

He was released by the stations’ new ownership, GOCOM Media of Northern California, which secured the stations’ licenses in February and had already fired longtime General Manager John Stall. Final sale of the stations went through last week, at which time Blair was let go. (Station management did not return the CN&R’s call for comment.)

CN&R readers picked Blair (pictured) as Best Local Personality year in and year out in the annual Best of Chico poll. He’s also the recipient of the Butte Humane Society’s “Humane-atarian of the Year” for 2012.

Community members have expressed shock at his dismissal. “People have been so sweet and so kind,” he said by phone on Monday (May 6). “This community has just been fantastic and wonderful to me.”

harassment and abuse at the hands of fellow foster children and group-home staff. Brown related bizarre tales of being forced to jog in place for hours by strict religious foster parents because of her inability to sit still in church. She has ADHD, she said.

She also alleged sexual abuse at the age of 12 that forced her to run away for the first time. And during his stint on the streets, Dickison said he used hard drugs regularly and hated the person he was becoming as he “slipped further down the wrong path.”

Both also spoke of a few good foster experiences: Dickison with a woman he lived with for six years, Brown in a home with 12 other foster children where she had her own horse, but battled for attention. These situations inevitably ended.

“You’re in a home, and you’re supposed to feel comfortable, but I was never comfortable,” Brown said. “I could never sleep in a bed and know how long it was going to last. So I never slept comfortably, and I never woke up feeling happy, and I never had anything to look forward to.”

Dickison said his life began to turn

around shortly after his time on the streets. Due to his running away and other behavioral problems, he was compelled to take group counseling.

Through this, he said, he was introduced

to the local chapter of the California Youth Connection (CYC), a nonprofit organization led mostly by current and former foster youth whose mission is to improve the lives of other youths and the entire foster-care system.

CYC trains young people in leadership and advocacy strategies, helps develop personal and professional skills, and helps foster youth gain access to available services.

The organization also participates in direct action to affect policy change on the state legislative level. Every year, members of CYC’s legislative committee—made up of members from 32 regional chapters—meet to decide what changes need to be made based on their real experiences, and then draft a bill. Every January, CYC holds a “Day at the Capitol,” in which the youths speak directly to legislators and try to find backers for their bill. They have an amazing success rate over the past 25 years, having a hand in the passage of at least 17 laws to help foster children attain services ranging from transitional housing to college tuition.

The local CYC chapter is also pushing at the local level. Last month, CYC members made a presentation to the Butte County Board of Supervisors, which issued a proclamation declaring May 2013 as Foster Care Month. The Chico City Council plans to do the same at its May 21 meeting.

Brown discovered CYC just a few months ago, and said it has already helped her immensely. It has also fired her up to advocate for foster youths.

“I like teaching them that it’s important to speak up, to use your mouth and your mind,” she said. “Call for help when you need it. When it’s a good situation, let it be known. When it’s not, then let that be known also.”

Brown works as a cook at the 6th Street Youth Drop-In Center in downtown Chico and is currently in transitional housing. She attends school through Oroville Adult Education, hopes to get her GED soon and is considering cosmetology school. She is also expecting a baby next month. She said her first child—born when she was 17—was taken away from her at a few days old and placed in foster care.

tive committee several times. He credits his involvement with the organization for giving him a voice when he felt he had none and with turning his life around.

“I knew right away I’d found people who understand the experiences that I’ve had better than anyone else ever could,” he said.

“I used to hate being a foster kid and thought once I was done I didn’t want to have anything to do with them. Now I want to work with them, I want to let them know there are people out there who know they’re struggling and are there to help.”

Today Dickison has a job as a cook at a convalescent hospital and lives independently with roommates. He plans to go to culinary school, is interested in studying social work, and is trying to get a job through the CYC youth-training project, in which foster children train new foster parents.

“I’m not exactly where I want to be,” he said, “but I’m getting there.” Ω

Opening statements Local leaders gather for courthouse groundbreaking ceremony n a warm, blustery Friday afternoon (May Onattily 3) in a southeast Chico field, about 200 dressed people—mostly county and

municipal elected and appointed officials— gathered for the ceremonial groundbreaking of the new North Butte County Courthouse.

With an anticipated December 2014 completion, the five-courtroom, two-story, 67,433-square-foot facility off of Bruce Road in the Meriam Park subdivision carries a $65 million price tag that will be covered by the state through a bill passed in 2008 for court construction projects to be funded by increased court fees. Of 40 projects statewide looking to cash in on the opportunity, only a handful, including Butte’s, have survived.

Standing on a small stage at the end of a long runway in the middle of a dirt field, presiding Butte County Superior Court Judge Stephen Benson addressed the crowd, which was seated under a large canvas tarp that occasionally shuddered in the wind.

“They have designed this courthouse to be open and accessible, for that is really what the California judicial branch of government is about,” Benson said after a pledge of allegiance and the a cappella version of the National Anthem by the Pleasant Valley High School Valkyries singers.

The new facility will replace the current Chico Courthouse on Oleander Avenue across from Chico Junior High School. Built in 1966, it has only two courtrooms. A onecourtroom courthouse in Paradise was constructed in 1961, but proceedings there were suspended a few years ago, with all cases

being transferred to Chico. According to a state report written before it closed, both buildings “have significant security problems and severe accessibility deficiencies, are very overcrowded, have many physical problems, and prevent the court from operating safe and efficient court facilities.”

“This courthouse will forever have a strong connection to our community,” Benson said. “We welcome today all of our public officials and elected officers of our local government, both Butte County as well as municipal Chico and Paradise, Gridley and Oroville. The list is so long that we would melt into the asphalt if I were to read each name.

“But I do need to welcome the pink flamingo brought by our district attorney, Mike Ramsey,” he said, nodding to the pink lawn ornament stuck in the ground next to the stage.

“He’ll have to tell you what that is about.”

Ramsey later explained that, when recently retired Judge Steven Howell took the bench in 1987, he presided in a double-wide construction trailer in Oroville set up as a “temporary” court that lasted about eight years. It became known, Ramsey said, as “Steve’s trailer court.”

“It was a well-known joke back then that Judge Howell had in his chambers a pink flamingo like the ones popular in Florida trailer courts,” Ramsey said.

Benson went on to read a message

from Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye, the state’s chief justice, who pointed out that such projects are important for the state’s justice system and to remind the public how they are paid for.

“In these tight fiscal times it’s important to remember that these projects are funded not with scarce tax dollars,” the message said, “but through specially designated court fees.”

The reasons cited for this reluctance were not enough room (55 percent), lack of privacy (49 percent), possible conflict (46 percent) and fear of less intimacy/sex with partner (21 percent).

But if they had to let a parent move in, 67 percent would rather have their mother than their father as a housemate. Reasons cited by the 1,100 respondents included the belief that their mom would help more with cooking, cleaning and taking care of the kids.

Dads were seen as lazier (68 percent), sloppier (70 percent), dirtier (75 percent), more likely to say inappropriate things (75 percent) and more controlling of the television (69 percent).

Jahr extended congratulations to all those involved for the local project, which he said will play a key role in providing citizen access to the state’s justice system.

“The Administrative Office of the Courts, for which I am now responsible, constructs all new courthouses in California and is responsible for the maintenance and management of all the existing courthouses—some 500 by last count—in the state.”

Transfer of responsibility for maintaining and managing court facilities from the counties to the state began in 2004.

Though the new courthouse design calls for holding cells, Ramsey said holding criminal cases in Chico rather than in Oroville would be “terribly inefficient.”

“We have the District Attorney’s Office here and the jail,” he said. “Transportation to Chico [of those in custody] would mean the loss of an hour each day.”

He said the Administrative Office of the Courts required the holding cells in the design of the new courthouse for family law cases in which a family member may be incarcerated.

Only family law and civil cases should be tried in Chico, Ramsey said. The criminal cases should remain in the Oroville court.

The project will be built by Otto Construction, a Sacramento-based company that also built a number of buildings for Chico State a few years back. And just like those buildings, which were awarded LEED certification for their environmentally friendly construction and energy efficiency, the new courthouse will be built with the aim of gaining a silver certificate.

Ironically, in the case of the Chico State project, 3,200 tons of debris from the structures cleared to make way for the new buildings ended up in and along the Sacramento River. In that case, Ramsey’s office prosecuted Thomas Carpenter, the contractor hired to demolish the buildings and dispose of the debris.

Federal officials on protecting children from Internet predators t has become commonplace to observe that the InterImunication net has changed the cultural landscape. Online comhas revolutionized the way people work,

study, play and interact. New technologies, devices and apps are cropping up faster than their users can adjust to them, and each advance widens an ethical gap that can leave young people very vulnerable.

Pew Research Center statistics hold that 38 percent of Facebook users are under the age of 13, and that one in 25 youths has been approached by online sexual predators attempting to arrange real-world meetings.

To shed light on these issues, on Tuesday (May 7) the Butte County Office of Education invited two speakers to present talks on the theme “Keeping Safe in Cyberspace.” Sacramento-based FBI Special Agent Scott Schofield, with the Violent Crimes Against Children Squad, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Reardon, coordinator of Project Safe Childhood, gave two afternoon presentations to freshmen at Pleasant Valley High School and one community talk in Chico Junior High School’s Durst Theater.

Between these engagements they gave an informal talk, intended for educators and school staff, on the dangers of cyberspace. It was held in the meeting room at Johnnie’s Restaurant in downtown Chico.

Two dozen teachers, administrators and school psychologists attended.

They started off with what Reardon called “the 800-pound gorilla”: Facebook.

“Once your information has been posted online,” he said, “you’re not getting it back.” College admissions offices and prospective employers routinely run kids’ names through Facebook as part of a standard vetting process. “You may walk into an interview wearing a suit and tie, and have your hair done nicely, but those pictures of you last weekend at the bar… that’s who [they’re] thinking about hiring. So this stuff follows you.”

An estimated 87,000,000 Facebook accounts are fake, he said. The anonymity of Facebook and other social networking tools provides sexual predators with ample cover to gain the trust of potential young victims. Pulling from years of experience investigating and prosecuting this sort of crime, Reardon said a typical predator “spends all day, every day on the computer. So it’s no big deal for him to send out a thousand emails to everyone he comes across online. All he needs is one kid to respond.”

He likened predatory tactics to the sort of social engineering associated with classic identity theft.

“We hear about it in terms of online scams for adults. They talk you out of your Social Security number, your phone number… It’s no different. The people we’re dealing with are very good at this. They’re very good at finding weaknesses, and they’ve got nothing but time on their hands to exploit whatever weakness they can find.”

With new tools, sites and apps like Kick and Snapchat constantly surfacing, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, especially for parents, said Schofield.

The anonymity of Facebook and other social-networking sites makes those platforms ripe for child predators.

“Something new has probably come along since we started talking to you guys,” he said. “When I do a parent presentation, nobody’s heard of this stuff.”

It’s best to paint in broad strokes when talking

about Internet safety with kids, Reardon said. “The point is really to teach them the main issues, [such as] ‘Don’t be chatting with people you don’t know online.’”

Reardon said it was important to use restraint when online.

“Think before you post, control your online identity,” he said. “And never meet up with someone online that you don’t know in real life. If the kids can take away those concepts, they are applicable to what’s out there today as well as what will be out there tomorrow, at least in the medium term.”

Asked about recommended policy language for elementary-, middle- and high-school student handbooks and materials, Reardon responded, “I’d be willing to work with you all, or at least to take it back to my office. But the appropriate person, because your districts are local and your boards are local, would be your DA’s office.”

Child pornography, cyber-bullying, and sex trafficking all find convenient points of entry in socialnetworking tools.

“We all like to think that these things aren’t happening in our community, but they are,” Reardon said, citing recent cases in Red Bluff and Paradise.

“I would love to come into work someday and be told that I was out of a job because there’s no more work left to do,” he said. “But hopefully we reach one or two, or a half-dozen or a dozen, and we at least get this conversation started.”

Exercise in futility Farmers’ Farmers’market marketin inlimbo, limbo,opportunity opportunitylost lost hen it was all over, six City Council W members sat slumped in their chairs, looking tired and discouraged. After dis-

cussing the future of the Saturday Chico Certified Farmers’ Market until late in the evening Tuesday (May 7), they’d accomplished nothing and lost a good opportunity in the bargain.

At issue was a Finance Committee recommendation to approve an extension of the market’s franchise agreement. In return for a two-year lease, the CCFM board of directors had agreed to pay $16,000 for sewer and power lines to be extended to the market’s site at Municipal Parking Lot 1. (Cal Water already has extended water lines to the site.)

It was a one-time opportunity that would take advantage of the downtown couplet project to bring in the lines at a reduced cost and replace the sometimes-gross current portable toilets with temporary bathrooms connected to the sewer lines.

Some downtown business owners are convinced the market cuts into their sales by taking up parking spaces and thus discouraging people from coming downtown to shop on Saturdays, which should be their biggest day of the week, they say. They want the market either to move to another site or—a recent proposal—switch to Sundays.

“Businesses are closing downtown,” Nancy Lindahl, owner of Zucchini & Vine, told the council. “This is more of an emergency than you’re willing to consider.”

Market representatives, on the other hand, are convinced that many of the hordes of people it attracts stay downtown after visiting the market, whether to shop or eat.

They cite a Chico State study done several years ago that found the market is good for downtown businesses.

The parking lot at City Hall has often been mentioned as a possible alternative location, but the CCFM reps said it wouldn’t work. The parking bays are too short to handle both vendors’ tables and their supply vehicles, and overall the lot can accommodate fewer vendors than the current site.

In addition, said Kurt Albrecht, the CCFM’s treasurer, city officials have said City Hall’s restrooms are off limits for security reasons, so the site offers no advantages in that regard.

The Saturday farmers’ market draws a crowd on a regular basis. But some downtown business owners say its location on Second and Wall streets cuts into their Saturday sales.

Councilman Randall Stone, on the other hand, thought the market’s current location was a done deal, and that the task was to figure out how to make it work.

Councilman Sean Morgan responded by charging that the CCFM had not been flexible and had “nixed every idea” put forth to resolve the matter. He thought switching to Sundays was the best option: “If they’re willing to go to Sunday, we can do this right now,” he said.

But the CCFM hadn’t had time to consult its members about that. Some members said many customers would rather go to church than shopping, and others said many vendors were committed to markets elsewhere on Sundays.

In the end, the council failed to approve the franchise extension, tying at 3-3 (Morgan, Mark Sorensen and Goloff opposed), with Ann Schwab recusing herself because she owns a downtown business. The various groups were no closer to resolution than before and had lost the opportunity to put in the sewer and power lines at a reduced cost.

In other council news: The council took some flak when it was announced that a Rancho Cucamonga firm had been chosen to do its audits for the next three years. Leslie Thole, COO of venerable local firm Matsom & Isom Accountancy, said the council’s failure to “buy local” meant the money— around $300,000—wouldn’t stay in the community. Council members nevertheless voted unanimously to hire Vavrinek, Trine, Day & Co. for three years but also to develop a way of weighting locality in making future picks.

BPA REMOVED FROM TOXINS LIST

After a brief appearance on California’s list of reproductive toxins, bisphenol-A has been removed due to a preliminary injunction issued by the Superior Court of Sacramento County.

As the CN&R previously reported, California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment added BPA to the list of reproductive toxins under Proposition 65 on April 11; on April 19, OEHHA announced it had removed BPA from the list, according to an email from Colleen Flannery, an OEHHA spokeswoman. The injunction was issued in part due to “limited scientific evidence” that BPA is indeed a toxin. However, as the injunction is preliminary, the possibility remains for it to be lifted following appeal or a full trial.

Meanwhile, Canada officially added BPA to its list of chemicals deemed potentially harmful to health and the environment. BPA—found in plastic bottles, food-can liners and dental sealants—has been linked to developmental and reproductive disorders.

DEADLY DISEASE OUTBREAK IN PRISONS

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched an investigation into the deaths of more than three dozen state-prison inmates who contracted valley fever.

Federal receiver J. Clark Kelso ordered the relocation of about 3,200 high-risk inmates from the two state prisons—Avenal and Pleasant Valley in the San Joaquin Valley—where the deaths occurred, according to the Los Angeles Times. In court papers filed May 2, Kelso said the state has had an “anemic” response to the outbreak; John Galgiani, a physician hired by attorneys representing the inmates, said the outbreak constitutes a “medical emergency.”

The disease—also known as “California fever” and “desert rheumatism”—is very common in the state’s Central Valley; it is dormant during dry spells, developing as mold when rains come.

People contract the disease when they breathe in the fungal spores.

CALI SUES OVER LEAD IN CANDY

California has sued several large retailers and candy makers, claiming they have exposed consumers to high levels of lead from candied plum and ginger products.

The state filed suit in San Francisco Superior Court on April 30 against Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Target and other outlets, accusing the retailers of knowingly selling products containing lead—a violation of Proposition 65, according to SFGate.com. The Center for Environmental Health in Oakland launched an investigation last fall, conducting tests of the products and informing the retailers when they were in violation of the law.

Proposition 65 requires all California businesses to warn consumers about chemicals in their products that cause cancer, birth defects and reproductive disorders.

she’s likely to get a strong reaction. She calls it “the squeamish factor”—a sense of discomfort at the mention of placenta encapsulation.

During placenta encapsulation, AhlWright prepares ingestible capsules from a new mother’s placenta. That new mother then takes the capsules in order to reap an array of benefits.

According to Placenta Benefits (placentiabenefits.info, or PBi), the organization through which Ahl-Wright received training, ingesting the placenta can: • help the uterus contract back to normal size • promote lactation • combat fatigue • help lessen or stop post-delivery bleeding • improve mood—reducing or eliminating postpartum depression Both Ahl-Wright and PBi cite medical research validating these benefits. AhlWright also has witnessed improvements in her clients. Still, considering what placenta encapsulation entails, it can be a hard sell.

“At first when people hear about placenta encapsulation, there’s the squeamish factor,” Ahl-Wright said, “because it’s not terribly widespread in our society. But once

people learn about the benefits, they tend to get on board. I think the more people hear about it and the positive benefits, the more we’ll see people doing it.”

Ahl-Wright received her PBi training in 2011. Since then, she has provided the service for a dozen clients, along with her sister and a couple of friends.

The concept is hardly new—AhlWright says it goes back to traditional Chinese medicine (the basis of PBi’s technique). Using this “traditional” technique, Ahl-Wright steams the placenta with herbs before drying it, crushing it into powder and creating the capsules.

Ahl-Wright also offers a second option, called the “raw” technique (which is why she says she operates as an independent placenta-encapsulation specialist instead of a PBi-affiliated practitioner). In the raw technique, she simply dries the placenta before crushing and creating the capsules.

Why the difference?

“The thought behind that is like when you steam vegetables, you lose some of the nutrients,” she explained, “so when you steam the placenta you might risk losing nutrients. I encourage women to do research on which they prefer and then I support them with that.”

The process takes four to five hours total, divided over two days. Ahl-Wright prepares the placenta capsules in the client’s home, she says, “because that way they’re not exposed to outside pathogens.”

In addition, the mothers “are there and can see it. Some of the moms I’ve worked with have been really interested and want to watch the whole process. Others are not that interested.”

The family does have to provide the placenta, obviously. Ahl-Wright said local hospitals have different rules about releasing the placenta to the family, but none obstructs the process.

“It has not been a problem locally,” she said. “Some hospitals will hold the placenta a week; some want you to take it as soon as possible. But when it’s stored at the hospital, it’s stored at a cold temperature so it’s safe to consume when you take it home.”

WEIGH IN ON AEROJET CLEANUP

Residents of the North State are encouraged to comment on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed cleanup plan for part of the Aerojet Superfund site in Sacramento County.

The portion of the Aerojet General Corporation Superfund Site in question is the Boundary Operable Unit, an area used to manufacture industrial chemicals, pesticide and rocketpropulsion systems, according to an EPA press release. The cleanup plan will address human and ecological health risks and groundwater contamination caused by the unit. Previous EPA investigations have found the soil and soil vapor in the area to be heavily contaminated.

The EPA will accept public comments until June 7 and will host a public meeting to discuss the plan on Wednesday, May 15, at Rancho Cordova City Hall. Go to www.epa.gov/region09/aerojet to review the plan.

CLIMATE-DENIERS MOCKED

President Obama’s administration has launched a campaign to shame “climate deniers” in Congress.

The campaign is spearheaded by Organizing for Action, the group that emerged during Obama’s re-election campaign that has tackled gun control, immigration and the budget, according to the UK’s Guardian newspaper. In an email to supporters, the group said that the time has come to target members of Congress who have denied the science supporting the existence of climate change. The email linked to a video mocking Republican lawmakers notorious for denying climate change.

“Right now, way too many lawmakers in Washington flat-out refuse to face the facts when it comes to climate change,” wrote Jon Carson, executive director of Organizing for Action.

DELTA CAN’T BE SAVED?

The deputy director of California’s Natural Resources Agency has come under fire for allegedly saying the proposed Bay Delta Conservation Plan will not save the Delta.

Five members of Congress have called for Jerry Meral to resign after two environmental advocates—Tom Stokely and Restore the Delta’s Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla—claim Meral suggested in casual conversation at an April 15 event that the proposed plan is not about saving the Delta and the estuary cannot be saved, according to The Record in Stockton.

Barrigan-Parrilla said she was standing nearby when Meral made the comments and wrote them down. However, Gov. Jerry Brown’s administration maintains the comments were taken out of context during a discussion about threats from sea-level rise, earthquakes and levee failures.

Barrigan-Parrilla insists the project’s primary objective is increasing the amount of water shipped to farms and cities south of the Delta.

In most pest situations, the key to mitigating damage is to increase biodiversity in your garden. Grow plants from different families such as umbelliferae (includes parsley, carrots, celery and dill), compositae (asters, daisies and sunflowers), boraginaceae (borage, comfrey, forget-me-nots and more), and rosaceae (roses, as well as apple, plum and almond trees, and strawberries), which flower at different times and attract birds, bees, ladybugs and butterflies. Combining plants from different families will attract insects that are predators of the insects you don’t want.

Leaving a few unkempt patches of grass along the edges of your garden will offer a place for spiders to live—and spiders eat plenty of insects. A small pile of rocks, branches, or broken concrete will offer a home for lizards, which will also help keep insect pests in check.

It is worth taking the time to work on creating biodiversity in your garden, as spraying insecticides is a bad idea for both the garden and the gardener. Insecticides are generally non-selective and will kill beneficial insects as well as insect pests.

Plus, they are poisonous, and can be bad when in contact with people (especially children) and pets.

Aphids are one of the most common

garden pests, and are comparatively easy to deal with. They are most effectively disrupted by a good blast with the hose. Spray them with the hose every day. Do not use insecticide because you want to encourage ladybugs to come and feast on your aphids.

If insecticides are used, the population of beneficial insects will be depleted, and the surviving aphids will reproduce more quickly than the other bugs, and thus will have free reign.

Evening snail hunting can work (bring a flashlight). Stomp them as you find them.

Creating a place for a toad or two in which to spend the day, such as a halfburied flowerpot, or a shallow, partially covered depression in a shady spot, will go far in helping control slug and snail populations. Toads like a cool, dark place in which to live during the day, and they’ll roam around at night to feed.

Western scrub jays are ubiquitous

around town. These blue, gray and white birds will take a taste of a ripening apricot, peach, or plum. They’ll peck at just-forming apples, chip away at ripening cherries, making noisy entrances and exits all the while. Bagging fruit offers fairly good protection from scrub jays—covering the fruit clusters with used mesh onion bags or small paper bags (using clothespins to attach the bags is advisable). Sharing some of the fruit with the birds is inevitable, so a good attitude about that will assist with the disappointment at the loss of some fruit.

Scrub jays will eat rodents, insects, and snails too, so they aren’t entirely bad.

“do nothing” when it comes to controlling garden pests, and accept some loss. This is a good step toward ecological pest management.

It is best to get nature to do the work when possible. Ladybugs eat aphids. Accept the aphids until the ladybugs arrive in your garden.

Ladybugs can also be purchased at local feed stores (release them at night when they will be less inclined to fly away). Toads eat snails. Make a toad-friendly habitat and stomp the snails until the toads take up residence. Lizards eat earwigs, so make a lizard lounge in the garden. Nature will generally keep things in check, when given the chance to do so.

Before panic sets in, let things go a bit, step back and watch nature do her thing. The environment will be better for it, and so will the gardener. Ω

trees, among other precious crops—are a pest problem that is not so easily solved. Do we really want predatory gopher snakes roaming around our yards? Perhaps some might like that. Carl Rosato at Woodleaf Farm uses cats, one per acre, for gopher control. Owls, those nocturnal hunters, will also help, since gophers actually travel above ground at night.

Trapping, however, is the best way to slow gopher activity and damage. A couple of good traps on the market are Macabee and the Victor BlackBox, both of which are available at most feed stores and some hardware stores. The traps are placed into the gopher tunnel (a bit of digging is required) and set.

Using a few cut green onions as bait will help lure the gopher into the trap. Gophers love to eat onions, garlic, potatoes, and a

Finding a good tunnel will possibly yield several gophers, over several days. The traps will need to be emptied regularly. Burying the rodent in an out-of-the-way spot in the yard will feed the soil food web (free fertilizer). Three days of empty traps in a tunnel, though, and it is time to move on to another tunnel. While trapping is unpleasant at first, many will find that it becomes easier when the crop damage reaches heartbreaking levels.

GETTING TO KNOW JOHN W. HUNT The Northern California Regional Land Trust recently hired a new executive director to replace Jamison Watts, who left the post to take a similar job with the Marin Agricultural Land Trust. John Hunt is the NCRLT’s new executive director, according to a recent NCRLT press release.

Hunt (pictured) “has lived in the North State for over 20 years, where he has worked as a natural-resources professional for more than 15 years,” said the press release. “Prior to accepting the position as NCRLT’s executive director, John worked as a senior wildlife biologist, botanist, wetlands scientist, and geographic information systems analyst in the private sector.”

Hunt’s 18-year-plus career began when he volunteered “on habitat management and restoration projects in Butte, Glenn, and John W. Hunt, new executive director of the Northern Tehama counties,” the release continues. “Since California Regional Land Trust. this time, John has worked PHOTO COURTESY OF THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA REGIONAL LAND TRUST in partnership with private landowners, agencies, nonprofits, and community organizations to conserve, manage and restore natural resources on farm, range, timber and wild lands throughout Northern California. Hunt also has a master’s degree in biology and a certificate in Geographic Information Systems, as well as “extensive regional experience as a resources biologist, GIS analyst, and manager for projects on both working and wild lands.”

He will be working alongside Noelle Ferdon, NCRLT’s local food systems director, NCRLT lands project coordinator Zach Mendes and Angela Carpenter, office manager and outreach coordinator.

As the press release reminds us, “The Northern California Regional Land Trust works with private landowners and other project partners to conserve working and wild lands using a range of tools,” including the establishment of conservation easements.

Love during How a Chico family— newly wed with twin newborns— faced deployment

The greatest blessing Inspiring locals spotlighted in annual Family Issue Eighteenth-century English poet and essayist Joseph Addison once wrote that “the love of a family is life’s greatest blessing.” It’s certainly hard to argue with that sentiment. For many people, family means home, security and loyalty.

But parenting in today’s world is more complex than ever. In our second annual Family Issue, you’ll read about three families who have worked to overcome their unique parenting challenges.

You’ll meet Randy Eitel, a National Guardsman who was deployed overseas two days after his wife, Samantha, gave birth to their twins. Chico mom Anna Binyon shares the efforts she and her husband have taken to keep their young sons engaged with the world, rather than glued to a screen. And then there’s Paradise couple Domingo and Irene Garcia, whose love of children is so great that they have opened their home to dozens, many with special needs.

s Samantha Eitel puts it, 2010 was a “surreal, crazy, emotional rollercoaster” of a time for her and her then-new husband, Sgt. Randy Eitel, an active National Guardsman.

Shortly after their wedding early that year, the couple discovered they were expecting twins. At the time of their marriage, Randy, who specializes in horizontal engineering (which roughly translates to heavy construction, in civilian terminology) and is part of the Chicobased 649th Engineer Company, was training for deployment. Though they’d discussed children and planned to have them after his overseas duties were done, they didn’t expect it to happen so quickly.

“I was lucky I even got to see them born, to hold them and get to know them, or at least as well as you can get to know a newborn baby,” he recalled. “Her due date was actually after I would be gone, but because of medical issues involved with having twins they did an emergency C-section.”

Two days later, Randy had to say goodbye to Samantha and the newborns—Madison and Mason—and head to Afghanistan.

“Deploying was was really hard, being a new father,” he recalled. “Every time I called home I was getting updated on all the developments they have that first year. However, thinking about it, nobody ever really remembers their first year, so maybe in one sense that was good, because they probably won’t really remember when I was gone.”

There is good logic behind Randy’s thinking.

wartime 1.5 million children home annually in recent years, and the effects of deployment on children are sometimes compared to those of divorce.

According to a number of articles on the issue—some at official military websites—the children of deployed soldiers grapple with abandonment issues and elevated stress levels that can negatively impact everything from academic performance to behavior and psychological development. Even infants can show signs of distress—such as increased crying and irritability—but are likely less effected than older children.

Things were also not easy for Samantha back home: “Everything was so new, having just been married and having kids,” she said. “All this stuff was happening at once, and it was the first time for everything.

“I was so naïve when we first met; I didn’t get the huge scope of what the military does,” she said. “I’d never had to worry about anyone going into a real dangerous place before. It was scary.”

RANDY WAS NO STRANGER TO

deployment, but the circumstances of his trip to Afghanistan were different from anything in his previous experience. Prior to joining the National Guard in 2008, he’d been in the Navy and spent some time in Iraq in 2006 and 2007. He is approaching a decade of accumulated military service; the couple met while they both were working at a local grocery store in 2008, during his brief stint back in civilian life.

“When I left the first time all I was saying goodbye to was an old truck and my Xbox,” he recalled. “Other than my parents, I didn’t really have anyone at home.

Then I had the kids, and it was a whole different story. My wife needed me to come back. There was a big emotional difference.”

How did this affect his experience overseas?

“I guess I was a lot more cautious, and a lot less tolerant of threats, than I would typically be,” he said.

Unlike his Iraq tour, where he was far from danger, he was stationed much clos-

er to combat in Afghanistan’s violenceridden Paktika Province, where his division’s engineering missions included building roads, outposts for the Afghani army, and protective barriers around schools in dangerous areas.

“We were never really close to where the main action was, but we were in range of artillery strikes,” he said. “For the most part that’s where we were at, but there were definitely times when the bullets were flying and all that. At those times, whether you’re a father or not, you do what you do and you complete the mission.”

The couple said their greatest comfort during his deployment was being able to communicate often through Skype, the Internet and an Afghani cellphone Randy purchased (“Service was pretty spotty; there aren’t a lot of cellphone towers around,” he said). Though they sometimes didn’t speak by phone for up to two months, Samantha said she was comforted by semi-regular emails and Facebook messages.

Randy kept the hairier, more dangerous details of his deployment to himself so as not to worry his wife: “As far as she was concerned at the time, I was over there handing out balloons or something,” he joked.

The Eitels mentioned there is a command-sponsored organization of family members, volunteers, soldiers and civilians to assist the families of deployed servicemen and -women. It’s called the Family Readiness Group, and its services include emotional to financial support.

Samantha said she took some comfort relating to other military spouses she knows, but also had to keep some distance to avoid the constant reminder that her husband was away in a war zone.

Randy returned after 11 months and doesn’t think he will see another deployment (“But it’s always just one political decision away,” he noted). He is active full time, working 40 or more hours a week at the Chico National Guard Armory, where his wife and twins—who turn 3 in October—are regular visitors.

Samantha teared up as she remembered greeting her husband when his unit returned: “Everyone said, ‘You’re going to be so overwhelmed, you’d better let me hold the kids,’ and I was like, ‘No, I’ll be OK.’ “But as soon as I saw him I said, ‘Please take them.’ I had to run up and hug him and have him back in my arms as soon as I saw him.” Ω

A chance at life Meet the Garcias, who have dedicated their lives to rescuing children by

S

etting the dinner table in the Garcia family home is no simple task. Sure, right now there are only 13 people living on the large property in Magalia, but the table seats 20.

In the 32 years Domingo and Irene Garcia have been foster parents, they’ve adopted— or become legal guardians for—17 children.

They’ve also opened their home to dozens of California’s neediest kids. Some have severe health problems, and others bear emotional if not physical scars. Almost all of them have difficulty learning or socializing, putting them in the category of “special needs.”

“We’ve been married 44 years, and we’ve been fostering for 32 years,” Domingo said during a recent phone interview. “We have kids from 8 to 44 and every decade in between. Now there are 11 kids in the house.

Some of them have moved away, and some of the kids we’ve fostered were with us for only a short period of time.”

The Garcias moved to Butte County nine years ago after doing some research into where they could make the biggest impact.

Upon their arrival, they got all their paperwork and licenses in order and signed up with Remi Vista Inc., a foster-family agency based in Redding with an office in Chico.

“They are a really unique family and a family that has a dedication and devotion that is pretty rare,” Becky Winton, a clinical psychologist and regional director for Remi Vista, said of the Garcias. “It was really a gift to Remi Vista to have them be a part of our agency. They’re just very positive, and their parenting is very loving and caring and structured. Almost every kid who comes into foster care needs a structured existence.”

In many ways, Domingo and Irene have become model parents in Butte County. Not only have they cared for many of the area’s chil24 CN&R May 9, 2013

dren—probably 40 or 50, Winton estimates— but they also speak at parenting seminars and offer mentoring services for young families.

Why? The answer is simple.

“I believe that the family is very, very important,” Domingo said. “It’s the future.

It’s the basis from which everything comes.”

DOMINGO AND IRENE MET, FELL IN LOVE

and got married by the time they were 16 years old. They had two biological sons, whom they love dearly, but Irene wanted a baby girl. Unfortunately, health issues prevented her from having any more children, so they decided to look into adoption.

“We adopted a little girl with special needs. The doctors told us that if she lived past 1 year old, she would never walk or talk,” Domingo said. “That little girl is still with us—she’s almost 32. They thought she wouldn’t last a year, but we’re sure she’ll outlive us.”

Back then, the Garcias were living in Simi Valley, a safe and comfortable area north of Los Angeles. With their sons safely in middle school and an infant at home, they decided they had room for one more.

“We requested a boy about her age because she needed a sibling,” he said. “He came with a brother, and before we knew it we had a houseful.”

Before long, there were no more children in Simi Valley who needed fostering, he said.

The well had run dry, he surmised, because of the relative prosperity of the region. So the Garcias did some research and set their sights on Butte County.

“We looked to find where the need was,” Domingo explained. “Most of the children we get now are from drug raids. And we built our home to accommodate them—our dining

room table seats 20; we have a classroom where the kids can learn using iPads.”

Life as a foster parent isn’t all glamour, however. Domingo and Irene put a tremendous amount of effort into working on the kids’ self-esteem, dealing with health problems that sometimes require frequent doctor visits and medication, and trying to serve as positive role models.

“Sometimes foster parents have an idealized view that they can just get these kids and love and cuddle them and everything will be OK,” Winton explained. “The truth of the matter is, it’s many hours of being consistent in offering structure, and being loving and caring but also staying up at nights when they’re having night terrors and teaching them tasks that might take longer to teach them than a child who hasn’t been traumatized.”

Domingo agreed that being a foster parent can take its toll.

“It’s very emotionally draining,” he said.

Right now, he’s a stay-at-home dad and Irene works as a hairdresser. But they both put in the time to teach the kids not only math, English and science but also morality-based subjects like the difference between right and wrong or the idea of respect—both for oneself and others.

“We spend the time to train them,” Domingo said. “God has called us to do this.

They would be a reflection of their environ-

ment. Our jails are full of foster kids and children from broken homes.”

THE GARCIAS HOPE TO SPREAD THE MES-

sage that becoming foster parents can change not only the lives of children in need, but also the lives of parents. Irene is working on a book, due out this time next year, and she’s been featured in a film called Deny Yourself about women and religion. In addition, their way of life has rubbed off on their two adult biological sons, both of whom have adopted children of their own.

“People don’t want to do it because they’re afraid,” Domingo said of becoming a foster or adoptive parent. “You have to be willing to give up whatever.”

Remi Vista’s Winton agreed, adding, “There’s such a dedication in the way of being of these foster parents. The Garcias are an amazing example of that. Probably the best that I personally know.”

“I think we give them a chance at life,” Domingo said of the children who’ve come into their life and their home. That alone is enough to drive him and Irene to keep doing what they’ve been doing for the past three decades.

“We have no regrets. We love it. It’s the way we choose to live.” Ω

“I

moved the TV into the cold garage,” said Anna Binyon, stay-at-home mother of two young boys, 6-year-old Coleman and 4-year-old Sawyer, and an avid noscreen advocate.

She explained that the family’s television, which has a built-in VCR, is used only for watching an occasional movie. It was moved about a year ago from its privileged, central position in the home and relegated to the less comfortable, less central garage area to discourage the family’s all-too-common habit of sitting in front of it, transfixed, for lengthy stretches of time.

Their computer met a similar fate this past Lent, when the family gave it up entirely.

“I realized that I had become this dependent ‘Google zombie,’” said Binyon, who explained that she had become immersed in such time-consuming Internet pursuits as “checking status updates and events on Facebook. I felt like I was more connected, but actually was spending less face-to-face time with people.”

“I would take photos [of my family], then I would have to post them to Facebook,” she said. “But I would have to edit them first— while the kids were waiting for me to play a game.”

All that screen time “was robbing me of time, of precious minutes that—when you add them up—is a ridiculous amount of time,” said Binyon during a recent interview that coincided with Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood’s Screen-Free Week, April 29-May 5.

Formerly known as “TV Turnoff Week” and “Digital Detox Week,” Screen-Free Week invited people from all over the United States and the world to “turn off TV, video and mobile games, and other screens they use for entertainment, and turn on the world around them!

“What I’m really shooting for is a one-stop shop,” said Savage, founder Dex 167 E. As Savage explained, the space and its full complement of top-ofthe-line musical equipment is available for bands—even those lacking their own gear—to practice. Savage also attempts to hook up like-minded players looking to jam with others.

And when it comes time to play that first gig, Dex has an arms-wide-open booking policy toward all genres, styles and skill levels. Everyone gets a cut of the door, and for those who want the help, Savage’s brother Forester even does logo and graphic design to help bands establish their identity and to help with fliers and other promotional material.

“It’s been going great since we started last month,” Savage said, saying some of the stand-out shows have included those headlined by local ska-punk youngsters 26 CN&R May 9, 2013

Dex is all-ages and at least partly geared toward younger acts. It is also an extension of Savage’s dual recording/band-production companies—Dex Records/Band Creator— as well as being home to his recording studio. Some bands Savage produces himself include Ashes, a five-piece all-girl band whose members are mostly junior-high age, and DC Radio, composed of pre-teens who make music he likens to Linkin Park.

This is Savage’s third attempt at a venue/music-production center, the first two (called Band Creator) failing to stick not because of lack of interest, said Savage, but because of issues with the physical locations. He said the first incarnation—in Paradise—did well, but zoning and septic issues would’ve required going through an expensive permitting process and 60 days of non-operation, all with no guarantee the club’s issues would be settled.

Similar problems affected his second attempt in south Chico. Savage said he believes the downtown Chico spot will work out.

“The zoning is all correct to host live music, and it’s a great spot,” he said.

Savage said the new venue did well in April, its first full month of operation, or at least well enough for him to break even. As the club does consistently better and he hopefully gets some “breathing room,” he plans to increase the cut the bands get of the door.

“I really want to give back to the local community and to stay involved,” said Savage, who has played in local bands (notably Hazmat) himself over the years.

“I’m married with kids and responsibilities now, so I figure this is my best way of doing that.”

Dex currently hosts concerts, DJs, comedy and other events Wednesday through Saturday nights and eventually plans to keep the doors open longer. While April mostly saw local bands on Dex’s stage, he has several touring acts slated to appear the next few months (including a four-band screamo/theatrical-rock tour stopping off on June 7, featuring headliners Snow White’s Poison Bite). As part of his effort to extend the club’s hours, Savage said he plans to host Christian bands on Sunday afternoons.

“I want it open and available seven days a week, night and day, and that’s what we’re working toward,” he said. Ω

Henri finds authentic, inexpensive Indian food in downtown Chico

Gand ’60s, Henri was fortunate to have been raised by transplants, mon pere having left his native rowing up in the Midwest in the 1950s

France to take a position teaching film at a small college in a provincial little town. Both my parents, in fact, had a deep love and appreciation for other cultures—for music, art, literature and especially for food, of course.

On the other hand, my cultural education did have unfortunate repercussions on occasion. In fifth grade, for example, we were studying the Pilgrims, and Mrs. Bjornstadtdtdsson suggested that we re-create the very first Thanksgiving.

I was thrilled, and so proud to offer by to cook—and then was crushed Henri Bourride when the whole class laughed at my contribution: tandoori chicken and biryani. Apparently not what they meant by “Indian food.”

All these years later, in fact, I can hardly go into an Indian restau★★★ 1⁄2 rant without feeling at least a tiny pang recalling that morning, though my unpleasant memories of the day are tempered in part by my recollection of those knickers and the Gogi’s Cafe pumps with the little silver buckles.

lentils, various beans, cucumber, yogurt, chicken, beef, and—near the coast—fish.

Owned and operated by Gogi and Vinay Kumar, Gogi’s cafeteria-style restaurant, open for five months now, offers a basic menu of Indian meat and vegetarian dishes in a comfortable high-ceilinged dining room with 15 or so tables and even a couch with a coffee table.

Appetizers ($4.95) include vegetable samosa (potatoes with peas, garbanzo beans and chutney) and bhelpuri chaat (puffed rice with onions, potatoes, tomatoes and cilantro). Entrees ($5.95) are served in a large bowl over basmati rice and include chicken tikka masala (a blend usually including garlic, ginger, onions and chile paste), palak tofu (spinach simmered with tofu and herbs and spices), and daal (lentil soup).

Gogi’s Special is chicken marinated in yogurt, ginger and other spices, clay-oven roasted and served over mixed greens. You can also get Indian desserts and several specialty drinks. No beer or wine is available.

On our first visit, we started with the savory chaat (crispy wheat-and-potato “dumplings” with chutney, yogurt and masala), and then I had the chicken tikka (marinated in yogurt and spices), and Colette had the channa masala (garbanzo beans). Everything was very good, especially the chicken tikka, the marinade moistening the rice.

I went back solo a couple of days later. Vinay was ladling something orange out of large cooler—looked almost like a melted orange sherbet—and into large glasses. I thought I might order one for dessert.

Turned out it was lassi, a thick mango-and-yogurt drink, which he said was a popular drink for hot days.

“Very refreshing,” he said. I ordered one, along with the rogan josh, the special, a Kashmiri dish made with goat braised in onions, yogurt, garlic, ginger, with cloves, bay leaves and cardamom (more typically, it’s made with lamb or beef). The lassi was delicious, wonderfully refreshing as Vinay had promised. The rogan josh was good, too, although I was kind of surprised at the number of small bones (at least five or six pieces) that I had to pick out.

Even though Gogi’s Café is open in the morning, they don’t offer a breakfast menu yet. (“Soon,” Vinay said.) As of now, they serve only Indian teas and coffees in the morning, although you can watch the Kumars prepping and cooking for the day just behind the counter. Ω

A Possible Reality Tomas Loarca Self-published A quick flip through A Possible Reality: Carlos Loarca—Artist & Muralist was enough to draw me into the colorful world of the Guatemalan painter. Bright, vibrant reds, yellows, blues and greens pop off the pages, while the images of dogs (almost every painting and mural in this book includes a dog) offer a window into Loarca’s background and spirituality. The book, recently published by Loarca’s son, Chicoan Tomas Loarca, also tells the inspiring story of an immigrant’s ability to preserve BOOK parts of his native culture through art. The elder Loarca came to the United States when he was 18 years old and has spent most of his life here in Northern California—he currently resides in Sacramento. In addition to his biography, photographs of his paintings and murals are offset by quotes, such as, “I have been painting the same painting that is in my imagination for all these years.” The dog image, he says, came from the Guatemalan legend of El Cadejo, a majestic animal that protects drunks. “As a child, I guess I was always thankful to El Cadejo for bringing my father back home safely,” he says. Ultimately, it’s the pages featuring the more than 50 pieces of Loarca’s art that speak the loudest.

X-Box 360, Playstation 3, Wii U If the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise is about seemingly endless combos and perfectly executing a series of attacks, Injustice is about Batman and Joker beating the crap out of each other.

NetherRealm Studios does a great job of giving DC characters a set of moves and gameplay style that feels natural and true to the comics, so that each of the 24 characters in this fighting game plays like a badass who can go toe-to-toe with anyone on the roster. The familiar fighting arenas—such as the Hall of Justice and Wayne Manor—bring players further into the DC world and contain multiple tiers, and interactive and destructible environments. The art style pulls everything together with a realistic feel to the super-powered antics that still allow the DC universe to run wild. While many gamers will immediately jump into the multiplayer, Injustice has one of the best single-player campaigns of any fighting game. The biggest disappointment is the alternate costumes.

Too many are subtle variations on the fighters’ original costumes, so while they maintain the overall style of the game, it would have been nice to see more costumes pulled from the Silver Age comics, animated series or films.

Injustice may not end any comic-book fans’ “who would win between …” debates, but it’ll make the arguments much more fun.

Blues with a Mood Big Bill Morganfield Black Shuck Records Blues pedigrees don’t get any better than the one that comes with a Big Bill Morganfield album. In case you don’t know, he’s McKinley Morganfield’s baby boy, though Big Bill isn’t a baby anymore. He’s a big-voiced bluesman who built a legacy of his own over the last couple of decades with his stellar singing and guitar wizardry. And, on this album released on the 100th anniversary of his father’s birth, listeners get 11 songs that would have done his daddy proud. It’s as good a new blues album as I’ve heard in a long time, with Big Bill giving fervent expression to songs like his own “Money’s Gettin’ Cheaper,” a lament that could have been expressed anywhere along the line of blues history, but has particular resonance in these times that have been hard on so many. And when Big Bill covers songs like Willie Dixon’s “Ooh Wee,” we’re solidly in the groove of blues history, brought to life. Big Bill wrote seven of the songs here, including “Son of the Blues,” which closes out the album, bookending “Look What You Done,” the first cut on the disc. “Look What You Done” was written by Big Bill’s father, who, if you didn’t already know, goes by the name of Muddy Waters.

The evening kicked off with unbilled opener the Dave Mulligan Band, made up mostly of Gramblers assuming different instrumental duties, playing a roughly 40-minute set of down-tempo Americana with a couple boot-stomping numbers thrown in. Mulligan—who serves as back-up vocalist and acoustic guitarist for the Gramblers—earnestly sang of “the working man” and offering a shoulder to lean on through hard times, while Tim Bluhm added understated blues licks here and there. The players were more than competent and the music non-offensive, but the lyrics too often strayed into corny, near-parody territory. Indeed, when Mulligan opened a song with the line “There’s a hole in your heart as big as the Grand Canyon,” I couldn’t help snickering into my beer.

But when Nicki hit the microphone around 8:30 p.m., after a brief intermission, she immediately demonstrated why the Big Room was sold out—she can really wail.

to hide her eyes, she controlled her voice down to the finest nuance, from delicate and wavering to chillingly powerful. She sang with the technical proficiency of an American Idol winner, but backed her precision with real soul and substance. The effect of Tim Bluhm and Mulligan providing supporting harmonies for Nicki’s soaring melodies was particularly pleasing; they offered a rather gruff, grounded base for her otherworldly range.

And unlike a good number of Big Room shows, where much of the drama is in guessing which member of the band will take their noodly two-minute solo next, the Gramblers stayed refreshingly on point, armed as they were with whistle-worthy tunes that stuck with me. For instance, “Little Too Late” (released as a digital single on the band’s website) with its refrain of “It’s a little too late to die young,” is a catchy, memorable and well-structured roots-rock song.

Another standout was “Ravenous” (the B-side for “Little to Late”) in which Nicki’s vocals are reminiscent of Linda Ronstadt’s sultry delivery and the Gramblers provide repetitive, driving bass and keyboard phrases for support.

Throughout the set, the band’s live chops came through as the dynamics of tension and release were exploited impeccably; vamping sections reached a crescendo either via Nicki’s rising voice or lead guitarist Deren Ney’s fiery, exhilarating rock licks (see the latter half of “Ravenous”). And Ney came to the fore on “Little Too Late” as well, augmenting his guitar solo with a monstrous octave effect, showing an admirable willingness to introduce interesting tones to a fairly straightforward rock song.

Hearing Nicki sing was well worth the wait, and Chico’s devotion to her is now quite understandable; she is a captivating stage presence and an inarguably great vocalist and songwriter.

My only question: What the hell is a grambler? Ω

didn’t have a problem following what was going on with Iron Man 3. But I wasn’t getting the Big Picture—the interconnectedness to all the other titles. But I’m not gonna watch the next hippy-with-a-hammer movie or yet another attempt to reboot the Incredible Hulk in order to keep up.

I’m not being elitist here. I dig monster movies, so I really can’t dismiss anyone else’s genre of choice. But superheroes just ain’t my bag.

But then, I didn’t go into Iron Man 3 out of excitement to see what Tony Stark and his metallic-mayhem suit were up to now. I was stoked to see what writer/director Shane Black would pull off after an eight-year absence.

When we last saw Black, it was with the release of 2005’s vastly entertaining L.A.-noir send-up Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (drop it in your queue). He also built a rep in the ’90s as Hollywood’s most bankable action writer with movies like Lethal Weapon,

bring IM3 to its climax, as it rigorously adheres to the superhero template of being a bunch of explosive set pieces barely linked together in lieu of a narrative. But then, who goes to a superhero movie to watch a bunch of folks standing around yapping? Bring on the mayhem, bitches.

IM3 definitely brings it on. This time around übercapitalist and Iron Man alter ego Tony Stark (the always entertaining Robert Downey Jr.) and his faithful companion Pepper Potts (the ever-annoying Gwyneth Paltrow) have their domestic bliss disrupted by yet another supervillain’s personal vendetta.

Things blow up and people die until Iron Man jumps back into action and resolves things in an interminable maelstrom of CGI pixels.

The 3D is fine, and the scheiss hits the fan with a liquid consistency. But IM3 isn’t very complicated, and the villain’s motivation for all that subterfuge and destruction in pursuit of destroying Stark is kind of absurd ... which of course may be Black’s sly jab at the genre itself. But the banter is amusing, with a couple of gags that nail it out of the park. But by following the superhero template so tightly, there are no real surprises. It is what it is: an omen of lightning and a drop from the cloud, but no storm. Ω

A lively and moving account of how Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers broke the color barrier in major-league baseball in 1947. As a baseball movie, it’s above average, convincing in specific detail and refreshingly free of fakery. As a social drama in a period setting, it’s evocative and intense even though condensed in ways that leave little room for thematic complexities and depth of character. Chadwick Boseman is excellent in the Robinson role. He delivers a nice sense of the man’s dignity and intensity, and the physical resemblance extends even into the way he swings the bat in the game-action scenes. And Harrison Ford is on point as Branch Rickey, the Dodgers’ owner/general manager who masterminded the whole breakthrough and handpicked Robinson to lead the way. Cinemark 14 and Paradise Cinema 7. The Big Wedding

Oblivion

Essentially a reboot of Battlefield Earth with the camp and Scientology removed, Oblivion plays like one of those copy/paste spoof movies, just without the smirk. It’s a Whitman’s Sampler of ideas and iconic moments lifted from better movies and wrapped in a shiny new CGI package, yet it can’t be bothered to explore those ideas and instead goes with some truly boneheaded narrative choices. Nothing adds up and the twist is scientifically absurd, but the scenes of post-apocalyptic New York look swell. Unfortunately Oblivion represents the new paradigm of contemporary filmmaking, where narrative integrity is irrelevant as long as the CGI delivers. Granted, it does deliver on the pretty spectacle, but offers about as much depth as Tom Cruise’s mirror. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13 —C.B.

Pain & Gain

Director Michael Bay (Pearl Harbor, Transformers) scales down a bit with this buddycomedy/action/crime flick about three Florida bodybuilders—Mark Wahlberg, The Rock, Anthony Mackie—who team up to kidnap and rip off an obnoxious rich dude. The Place Beyond the Pines

The new film from Derek Cianfrance is an unusual and unusually good multi-character crime drama. The Ryan Gosling character’s story takes up the whirlwind first part, but the narrative focus soon pivots to a young policeman (played by Bradley Cooper) who must navigate the stormy aftermath—the moral, political, legal and familial fall-out—of the Gosling segment. And the final part, 15 years after the first two parts, follows the conflicts between the two men’s sons (when the two at-risk teenagers meet at a Schenectady high school). The Gosling episode, with its crime spree and motorcycle stunts, is the most dynamic and dramatically tumultuous, but the busted relationships and dramatic crossfire of the other two episodes still draw their power from the paradoxes and clashing undercurrents of the first. Stoker

Ends tonight, May 9. The English-language debut of South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook is a stylishly updated pastiche of the Hitchcock-style psychothriller. The screenplay (credited to actor Wentworth Miller) sets up a steamy family melodrama full of transgressive possibilities—after her father is killed in a fiery car crash, the sanity of sulky teenager India Stoker (an excellent Mia Wasikowska) gets drastically tested. Her mother (a dotty Nicole Kidman) doesn’t seem very grief-stricken; doughty Aunt Gwendolyn (Jacki Weaver) comes to visit and immediately disappears; and her mysteriously disturbing Uncle Charlie (a subtly diabolical Matthew Goode) suddenly reappears in the family’s strangely turbulent life. The ensuing psychological mess is beyond credible solution, but the excellent cast and suavely perverse direction make the build-up of character-centered suspense a thing to behold. Pageant Theatre.

WHO’S GOING TO UPDATE THE SNIFFLE SCALE!? Nooooooo! Rob Blair is no

longer our local weatherman. The channels 12 and 24 morning/afternoon meteorologist and Wake Up! morning-show co-host was let go by the station’s new owner last Friday (see Downstroke, p. 8). How can this be? Arts DEVO’s morning ritual goes like this: Pour black coffee, let the dog out, turn on the TV and wait for Blair to tell me how much rain “Rod in Magalia” is reporting for the Ridge today. I honestly depend on the warm, goofy banter between Blair and co-host Megan McMann to gently nudge me into my Chico weekdays, and I can’t believe he will no longer be there to greet me.

His wacky, likeable on-camera persona aside, what really has made Blair such a popular local personality is the fact that he was always so enthusiastic about Chico and Bananas for Blair! seemed to embrace his role as one of the most prominent voices for the community. Whatever the reason was for the station’s new owners letting him go, I can’t imagine that the guy who was recently voted Best Local Personality by readers in the CN&R’s 2012 Best of Chico awards was dropped due to lack of audience appeal.

OFWGKTA IN THE HOUSE Real talk: The Tyler, The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt show coming up at the Senator Theatre next Wednesday, May 15, has the potential to be one of the greatest shows you’ve ever seen, or one of the worst. My advice: Throw all preconceptions out the window, lock up your delicate sensibilities for safe keeping and just go. In many ways, these two cornerstones of the acclaimed, hipster-adopted Odd Future hip-hop collective (of which recent Grammy-winner Frank Ocean was a member) appear to be no different than a lot of the foul-mouthed, misogynistic, insultflinging MCs who threaten to turn the genre into a bloated parody of itself. But they really are different. Their flow is not just another mindless diversion from the pipe of shit flowing across the rap landscape. The words they use may be just as ugly and juvenile, but they are pointed and Tyler, the Creator carefully guided into powerfully constructed, often frightening works of dark or just trippy art. And live, like a rap version of the Sex Pistols, Odd Future’s known to teeter on the brink of destruction. This could go either way.

UNIVERSITY PROPS I’ve been late in giving a shout out to the accomplishments of a couple of Chico State’s big dogs of the arts. First, Chico State philosophy professor and acclaimed poet Troy Jollimore has received a Guggenheim Fellowship for 2013. And second, North State Symphony’s vibrant conductor, Kyle Wiley Pickett, has been hired to be the new conductor of the Topeka Symphony Orchestra in Kansas. And, via the press release, the maestro assures us that he will be staying on with NSS, so hurray for him and for us!

this weekend (May 11), 1078 Gallery is also throwing a launch party on Friday, May 10, 7:30 p.m., for the Watershed Review, the new online version of the Chico State English Department’s literary and arts publication. big adventure you’ve been postponing forever because it hasn’t been convenient?

How about an intriguing possibility you have always wanted to experiment with but have consistently denied yourself? Or what about that nagging mystery you’ve been wishing you had the time and energy to solve?

Are you doing anything remotely like Charlie Parker? Are you pouring time and energy and money into an inferior form of pleasure or a trivial distraction that is undermining your ability to accomplish higher goals? If so, fix that glitch, please.

For the week of May 9, 2013

It’s outrageously good! We started [at] the Thursday Night Market three years ago, and this year we’re selling almost twice as much as last year. Spring and fall are best, and sometimes it’s almost too much business. But it slows down in the summer heat.

What flavors do you sell?

Our two biggest sellers are the regular, which has sugar and salt, and caramel. We also offer cheese, cinnamon and habanero, but they don’t sell anywhere near as much as the top two. We use the top-of-the-line Magic Mushroom Popcorn, which pops round and plump. Most people use “butterfly” popcorn, which pops with wings that stick out. That makes it harder to coat, and it falls apart easier in the kettle.

Is the Thursday Night Market your only venue?

No, but it’s our bread and butter. We also go to places like the races at the Silver Dollar Speedway, the Paradise Chocolate Fest, Gold Nugget Days and the Yuba-Sutter Fair. Plus we do birthdays, Christmas parties and such.

Is it difficult to make?

It can get pretty tough and hot. We use a paddle to stir the corn in a big, hot kettle. If you don’t stir fast enough the corn burns. I use a clear safety mask, gloves and long sleeves, since the corn pops at 360 degrees with oil that can splatter everywhere. My wife doesn’t stir because of that. You can imagine how hot it gets in the summer! I would die without my little box fan, which also helps spread the smell to the crowd.

What got you started?

Three years ago a friend who does it in Roseville knew I was good mechanically so he asked me to modify some of his equipment. I also made some for myself to try, and started [at] the Thursday Night Markets. I’m also a part-time contractor, but I’d rather put a smile on people’s faces at an exciting event than work on a building.

What’s next?

I’m building a trailer that will look like Ma & Pa Kettle’s house. It will be so much easier than the tent we have to set up and tear down now. We’ll just roll up, open the doors and start selling.

Brunch I went to a garden brunch the other day and had an awful time. It was a stunning morning, bright and hot only in the sun. There were lots of lovely, well-spoken people with smiles on their faces and love in their hearts and healthful, carefully prepared food, including plenty of bacon and several pies from the Pie Lady, with ice cream. I was miserable.

There were also a few happy old couples, who are particularly hard to take. Everything about it made me sad because Janice would have loved it and wasn’t there and won’t ever be. I’ve never felt so alone.

Of all the lovely, well-spoken people, I knew only the hostess. I’d been introduced to a couple of other people, but I don’t call that knowing somebody. I recognized them and greeted them and had nothing else to say.

When things are especially swell, as in the evening when a soft breeze caresses and there’s no racing at the fairgrounds, I get weepy. It doesn’t make sense to me either. My mind, though, seems not to be mine.

Maybe I belong to it, because I keep thinking how much Janice would have liked that particular breeze at that particular temperature. I know she got her

share of gentle breezes, but not right away. I know that later, and meanwhile I’m trying not to sob.

I’ve come to think of tears as moisturizer.

Sometimes they tickle, though, and I get to practice focusing my awareness on that maddening tickling sensation until I’m clear that it’s not me or the world.

It’s just a sensation and will pass away. Now and then I wipe my face.

I heard a conversation Janice and I had a year and a half ago when she said something kinda snippy, and I remembered that sometimes she was less than fun for me to be around. I hadn’t exactly forgotten that part of us; the loving, kind Janice is more true. Even from this slight remove I can see how minor our quirks and mismatches were, although neither of us seemed to think so at the time.

Sometimes she could be a pain, as can we all. She was my own personal pain, though, and I miss her, snippy or not. Now and then I laugh about us.

So I’ve got a simile for this overwhelming sadness over an imperfect mortal, namely me, since there’s no reason to be sad for Janice. Losing my mate has been like losing a leg. That when I had the leg I’d get an occasional twinge of arthritis in my knee means nothing. I’m down one leg.
